Milly Venus couldn’t believe it when she heard the voice on the HandyDART bus radio, ordering the driver to take her and her wheelchair-bound son, Terry, 51, back home.

When the call came through, Venus, 70, and Terry — who has had multiple sclerosis since he was 18 — were only two minutes into their journey to Vancouver General Hospital last Friday morning for an important, long-awaited appointment with Terry’s blood doctor.

Moments earlier, the HandyDART driver, who couldn’t have been nicer, according to Venus, had picked them up at their Lynas Lane condo in the Thompson neighbourhood, loaded up Terry’s chair and helped him onto the bus. “(The driver) told the dispatcher he had picked up at Lynas Lane, then all I heard through his intercom was ‘no, no, no. No wheelchairs, take him back,’” said Venus, who, as well as being the sole, full-time care-giver for her adult son, works parttime as a custodian at the nearby Ukrainian Community Centre.

“He turned right around. I couldn’t believe it; I was so upset, I just started crying. I really didn’t know what to say. I thought, ‘is this not what HandyDART is actually designed for?’

“The driver was so apologetic. He was saying he could still take us there, but without the wheelchair. But Terry can’t walk, other than a few steps, then he falls over.

“Terry was getting upset also, worrying about missing the appointment, which was set up months in advance.”

near unanimous Richmond city council has placed a moratorium on building permit applications for houses on protected farmland.

Monday’s 8-1 vote in favour of a moratorium follows a recent flood of such applications to build large houses on the Agricultural Land Reserve.

In January, when council began a public consultation process on restricting home sizes on farmland, Couns. Carol Day and Harold Steves called for such a measure, fearing a rush of development.

At that time, council chose to wait for public consultation to conclude. Now, Mayor Malcolm Brodie, and most others, are onside with a moratorium, until staff can draw up a new bylaw.

“My belief is, having left the situation with reduced guidelines has ended up with some premises in the ALR that are larger than warranted. I believe the time has come for limitations on house size and home plate size,” said Brodie.

Whereas normally the City of Richmond takes in 15 applications per year, since Jan. 1 it has seen 26. This year’s applica-

tions have proposed homes that average 12,000-square-feet in size, with the largest being 22,390-square-feet, according to a staff report that tabled a moratorium option.

As it stands, after the vote by council, applicants have seven days to receive a building permit under the old housing bylaws, which has few restrictions.

After seven days, all applications will be considered under a new, proposed bylaw that will further limit house sizes. The new, proposed bylaw is to be presented to council on April 24. A public hearing could happen as early as May 15, notes the report.

Coun. Alexa Loo opposed the moratorium, on grounds that land owners have a right to sell their property without “heavyhanded” government intervention.

Currently, there is no restriction on house size, but a home may be limited by the fact it can’t be built more than 50 metres away from the road.

“Some people are freaking out about a bunch of dirt,” she said, adding homes take relatively little space on big acreages.

Moreover, restrictions don’t tackle the root of the problem.

“If the goal is to get people to farm, then that’s a different discussion,” said Loo, who, as a councillor, doesn’t see it as her job to curb land speculation.

Coun. Harold Steves begs to differ and presented council with a real estate ad for a home on No. 2 Road, which noted the 6.5-acre lot, for sale for $7.9 million, has a “maximum future building envelope” of 28,225-square-feet.

t’s still unclear what caused the driver of a BMW on Sunday to crash into one of the concrete pillars that holds up the Canada Line on No. 3 Road.

At about 11:40 a.m., service on the line between Bridgeport and Brighouse stations was halted after the car swerved and hit the guideway off No. 3 Road at Ackroyd Road, while travelling north.

TransLink was forced to call a halt to the train service until engineers were able to assess the struc-

tural integrity of the pillar.

According to TransLink, “damage to the pillar was found to be minimal and hadn’t affected the structural integrity of the guideway.

“Service was restored about 40 minutes later, once we determined it was safe. A bus bridge was activated during the service disruption to shuttle passengers between Bridgeport and Brighouse.”

It’s not known if anyone was injured in the crash or whether police are investigating the incident.

A

spokesperson for Harvest Power said a cease and desist order filed by Metro Vancouver last week, to halt organic waste deliveries to the company’s compost facility in east Richmond, is evidence that the “sniff test” remains “vague and unscientific.”

Stephen Bryneel said Metro Vancouver’s insistence that Harvest Power had violated the terms of its air quality permit this month is inconsistent with the declining odour complaints and emission improvements the facility has seen in the past two months.

Metro Vancouver deemed Harvest Power to be in violation of the permit, after determining it had caused significant odours on five occasions in the past 14 days, come March 22.

As such, it stopped taking organic waste for two days, until last Friday, when there were no longer five attributable violations within a 14-day period (a requirement of the permit).

Metro Vancouver officials used what is called a “sniff test” to determine compost odours had exceeded a five-kilometre boundary, from the facility, which drew thousands of official complaints last year.

Yet, this month shows some of the lowest number of complaints over the past eight months.

Many residents did, however, report odours seemingly attributable to Harvest Power on March 9, 13, 19 and 21, according to social media posts (Public Facebook group Stop the Stink in Richmond).

Harvest Power appealed the cease and desist order in an expedited manner last Thursday, by calling for an end to the sniff test, which relies heavily on the ability of of-

ficials to smell and identify odours. It is awaiting a decision from the Environmental Appeal Board, said Bruyneel.

“We had applied for a stay order for the sniff test back in December, and we now asked that it be ruled on, given what was going on,” he said, via email.

Bruyneel said the order caused a “huge disruption” to organic waste haulers in the region. Metro Vancouver relaxed its organic waste tipping fees at its waste stations, and spokesperson Don Bradley said about 250 tonnes of green waste and food scraps was diverted, some to the landfill and the rest to other compost facilities.

Both the City of Richmond and Metro Vancouver maintain the sniff test is valid.

“We believe the sniff test is appropriate, and we’ve pressed Metro Vancouver to use it,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

Meanwhile, Richmond has served Harvest

Power with a second notice of default. Brodie said a mediation meeting is scheduled for this week as the deadline for the first notice is approaching.

Richmond has diverted its multi-family home organic waste to Enviro-Smart Organics compost facility in Delta. However, singlefamily home organic waste is being diverted to another facility during the Harvest Power closure, stated the memo. Legal documents show Richmond is obliged to deliver at least 12,000 tonnes of organic waste, annually.

A legal battle persists as 24 residents have applied to the Environmental Appeal Board, to challenge the new air quality permit and shut down the compost facility for good.

Conversely, Harvest Power argues that provincial regulations do not apply to its facility as it is situated on federal land (Port of Vancouver). The federal government has stated it has no jurisdiction in the matter.

ayor Malcolm Brodie says his strong opposition to replace the George Massey Tunnel with a mega-bridge does not overrule his continued willingness to work with the BC Liberals on other matters.

Highlighting this point, Brodie recently helped cut the ribbon at the office opening of BC Liberal candidate Jas Johal, who is competing for an MLA seat in the May 9 provincial election in the riding of Richmond-Queensborough, where the bridge is situated.

Brodie’s gesture is one of many from members of Richmond city council, who are throwing their hats into the provincial election melee, to various degrees.

The most overt instance is Coun. Chak Au, who is vying to become an MLA for the BC NDP in the Richmond South Centre riding. While Au had aligned himself previously with right-of-centre politics — by donating to the federal Conservatives and provincial BC Liberals — he said he had a change of heart this past year, charging that the BC Liberals have not kept several promises they made for Richmond.

Au now joins Coun. Harold Steves in the NDP camp, with environmentalist Steves being a long-standing member of the party and critic of numerous BC Liberal decisions, such as the bridge, the Site C dam and stated commitment to LNG production.

Another councillor sending a strong partisan signal is Alexa Loo, who was first elected into Richmond City Hall In 2014, with 582 votes more than firstrunner up Andy Hobbs.

Now, she will be Johal’s campaign cochair with former MLA Olga Ilich.

Loo, an independent councillor, campaigned in the last civic election with Steves in what was described as a “coalition.”

Since then, however, Loo and Steves have differed on many key issues.

Loo said she hasn’t ruled out running for provincial politics in the future. She said her commitment to the BC Liberals, and the issues they stand for, is a result of her education in business.

While provincial politics has driven a wedge between Loo and Steves, it has drawn Coun. Carol Day closer to Steves and Au. These three have, many times, voted

together on issues at city council.

But Day ran for the BC Conservatives last election and generally takes a populist tone, particularly when it comes to matters of development in the city. Day has attended some BC NDP events to date, and has been openly critical of the BC Liberals on issues such as school funding (she’s a former school trustee) and the Massey Tunnel project, among others. She’s also aligned on her civic slate RITE with Green Party candidate Michael Wolfe.

Also critical of the BC Liberal government, on matters including social service spending, has been Coun. Bill McNulty. However, McNulty was also at Johal’s ribbon-cutting, alongside Coun.

Ken Johnston, a former BC Liberal MLA. Brodie said the ribbon-cutting is nothing more than a gesture to keep “lines of communication open.”

Brodie said he understands the BC Liberals will build the bridge if elected and that the BC NDP will review the plan and simultaneously endorse the Mayor’s Council transportation plan (which doesn’t include a mega bridge at the Massey Tunnel).

“I will attend (political events) and I will vocalize my opinion at all times. And I have done so,” said Brodie, adding he would be just as willing to cut a ribbon for an NDP candidate, if asked.

Brodie personally donated to the BC Liberals in the past, but noted it was a “small amount” ($825 for last election).

And, regardless, the mayor’s office remains non-partisan.

“I think my position as mayor is unique. It has differences to other posi-

tions,” he noted. “I’ve been to a number of openings. I don’t see the bridge as being the only issue that’s out there,” said Brodie, noting delays in building a hospital tower and seismically upgrading schools.

Yap pledges help for seniors Graeme Wood

here will be more opportunities for Richmond seniors living at home to mingle with one another, thanks to the creation of 25 new adult daycare spaces at Austin Harris Residence.

Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap announced the new spaces, to be funded from a $500 million boost to seniors care in B.C. — money sorely needed, according to healthcare workers, who have described such care, or lack thereof, to be at a “crisis” level.

The day program is said to be a key component of facilitating more “living-at-home” opportunities for seniors, seeking independence.

“Building more options for care in the community is part of our government’s strategy to change how health care is delivered in B.C. Our goal is to create an integrated system of primary care and community services that better meet the healthcare needs of all British Columbians,” said Yap. Austin Harris Residence is operated by S.U.C.C.E.S.S, an immigrant services organization and, as such, is focused on services for immigrant seniors. Their existing adult day program has 100 seniors. to add the new spaces. It will cost $520,000 to operate annually.

The program “allows caregivers and family members some respite by bringing their beloved parents to the program,” said Yap. Seniors may attend the program twice a week, to meet new friends.

There are also 94 day program spaces at Kinsmen Adult Centre.

The need for more seniors care, such as this program, is urgent, said Jennifer Whiteside of the Hospital Employees’ Union (HEU).

According to BC Stats, there are 35,922 Richmondites, out of 213,392, over age 65. By 2027, close to one quarter of Richmond (about 60,000 people) is projected to be over age 65.

Earlier this month, Health Minister Terry Lake announced $500 million in new spending for seniors care over the next four years.

The money is to be used for 1,500 new positions in residential care, according to the HEU. This could help stem the growing number of residential care facilities in B.C. that fail to meet Ministry of Health staffing guidelines of 3.36 hours of care per senior each day. Presently, nine in ten facilities, including all five in Richmond, do not meet this threshold, according to the Office of the Seniors Advocate of B.C. “The crisis in seniors’ care has been 15 years in the making, and

won’t be solved overnight,” said Whiteside of the HEU. Yap said he is committed to reversing this growing trend.

“We’re certainly committed to increasing support for seniors,” he told the Richmond News.

“I’m hopeful over time we will see that trend reversed. We know there’s a need to catch up in [residential care] beds in Richmond.”

Richmond will see a 135-bed residential care facility open in Hamilton, by 2019, to be operated by Trellis Group, a for-profit company, which, last year, was at the centre of a controversy on the Sunshine Coast, where the HEU and B.C. Nurses Union said the facility would reduce staff in its renovated facility.

Fraserview Lodge, a member of the Kaigo Seniors Living Group, near South Arm Park, will expand by 75 beds, by 2020.

Meanwhile, Yap repeated his commitment to rebuild Lions Manor in Steveston — although there’s no definitive timeline.

“Plans are moving to a stage where . . . in the coming months we’ll see a business plan move forward to replace Lions Manor,” which closed three years ago.

Currently, relocated seniors are living in a renovated hotel on Bridgeport Road.

Castlegar minister runs in Richmond Alan Campbell

he B.C. Green Party has announced its candidate to run in Richmond’s new South Centre riding.

Greg Powell, who is currently a minister at the Castlegar United Church in the West Kootenays, will fly the green flag against the BC Liberals’ Richmond-East incumbent Linda Reid and the BC NDP’s newcomer, Richmond city councillor, Chak Au. n Greg Powell Powell told the Richmond News on Tuesday that, given the 628-kilometre/nine-hour drive from Castlegar, he won’t be taking time off from his ministry during the election build-up.

Instead, he will run most of his campaign via social media, which “most other candidates do anyway,” said Powell.

election and, as it already had a strong candidate running in his local Kootenays West riding, Richmond was suggested.

“There’s a strong team of volunteers down there, so I’m hoping they can do some of the door-knocking for me,” said Powell, who said he hopes to spend some discernable time in Richmond closer to the election on May 9.

Powell said he’s aware of Richmond’s “diverse population” and that it’s a very “fast-growing community.”

Thankfully, a close friend of the Venus family was able, at the last minute, to rush the pair to the appointment at VGH. But it wasn’t until a few days later that it became apparent why they had been dumped

by HandyDART, who’re described by TransLink as a “door-to-door, shared ride service for passengers with physical or cognitive disabilities, who are unable to use conventional public transit without assistance.”

According to the customer service agent Venus spoke to, a policy change on Jan. 1 this year means, for safety reasons, it no longer takes clients using “transport” wheelchairs, which is what Terry used for years.

However, what Venus is still angry about is why she, nor the driver, seemed to have any clue about the policy change; why she wasn’t told at the time of booking the pick-up; and why the journey could not simply have continued, with an advisory issued afterwards?

“It would have been common sense just to let things continue, instead of all this upset, especially for Terry,” Venus told the News.

“And I felt so bad for the driver, he was very embarrassed. We’ve been using (the service) for three or four years. It’s a transit chair, that’s what it’s designed for…transit.”

Venus added that there was some discussion with the booking agent, prior to the ride, about Terry having a wheelchair.

“We spoke specifically about the transit chairs and they would have known we hadn’t used the service since Jan. 1. They had sev-

eral chances to mention the change.”

The only reference to wheelchairs on the HandyDART section of TransLink’s website indicates the dimension restrictions.

TransLink, which sub-contracts the HandyDART service to MVT, said users of the service were notified last summer of the policy change and brochures were handed out on the buses themselves.

A statement from TransLink described how the policy was changed this year on “transfer chairs,” which are “intended for indoor use only because their small wheels can easily become stuck in surface irregularities, causing chairs to tip and increasing risk of injury to customers and drivers.”

TransLink said HandyDART users were notified six months in advance of the policy change and every HandyDART driver was notified by internal memo, as well as being included in refresher training.

Venus, who used the service several times last year, said Friday was the first time she, and the driver, had heard of it.

TransLink said that MVT has “acknowledged that correct procedure was not followed in this instance. “The driver should have identified the chair prior to commencing the trip so that alternate transportation could have been arranged. MVT is offering an apology to this customer and will be contacting them today.”

As for Venus, she’s going to have to avail herself of a “proper wheelchair,” perhaps renting one from the Red Cross.

“I can’t afford to buy one. And we have to go to UBC in May for another important appointment; how are we supposed to get out there?”

A match made in compromise

Dear Editor, Could the Interurban ride again?

Onni built an eyesore on the Fraser River in Steveston with city council’s blessing. Now, those buildings sit idle, gathering dust.

Down the street, tucked away

out of sight, is an interurban tram. It, too, sits idle, gathering dust. Hmmm. Let’s clear away the dust and cobwebs and make a deal.

Onni — fund and restore the tram to its glory days. You get a charitable tax deduction and make a popular addition

to Richmond’s culture. City council — bend a little, forget about “maritime commerce,” it ain’t gonna happen. Rezone the buildings.

Both of you, think of the public relations coup — the historic interurban tram running from Storybrooke, oops Steveston,

through Richmond over the river to Marpole. Tourists would love it, our kids would love it, all of us would love it! It may not be a total win-win, but it sure beats the lose-lose stalemate we have today.

Take the money and run May your schooling be better than ours

Dear Editor, It’s interesting how most recently we have had a proliferation of letters commenting on the problems created by the construction of mega homes in our neighbourhoods, particularly in lots with LUC bylaws.

Subject lines such as “Zoning out the light,” “One needs to consider existing homes,” “Island City – Without nature.”

Of course, as a regular reader you will know that mega home construction is not new; it was probably 20–25 years ago this all started, however the LUC discussion has a slightly different tone to it — that being the allowable construction of three-level homes, and the problems this brings to the older homes.

I often wonder when reading these letters if the folks at city hall ever review them and if they ever ponder what legacy they are leaving behind when they opt to leave their responsible positions. Frankly, I don’t really think they care. The city collects nice revenues from new home construction. I don’t think builders or construction guys care, as they are making good returns on the build and sell policy. I don’t think the banks care, as they make excellent returns on construction mortgages. And, finally, I don’t think realtors care, as we know the exorbitant commissions they make on a sale of a home in the $2 mil-

lion to $3 million area, so they love it. So who really cares?

My thought is no one cares; you are on your own. And, as I said in an earlier letter, you are stuck with your lot. I have talked to far too many longtime residents of Richmond who have basically thrown in the towel and left the city. They have had it with our city of nature.

It’s a sad reflection on how things truly are in our city. We are building highrise apartment blocks like mad in the downtown core of Richmond — all approved and overseen by the city fathers/mothers. And for what reason? Are we trying to outsmart Surrey, and be the fastest growing city in the Lower Mainland? (And, of course, let’s build big and fast. It must be the thing to do, everyone else is doing it. However, let’s not have the foresight to improve roads etc.)

It’s the same scenario in the suburbs with ludicrous monster homes being built with no thought or consideration for our neighbours.

So, I say, give me back my LUC, and, when I’m ready, I will build that monster, line my pocket with a few bucks (just like all the other self-centred folks in the business) then skedaddle.

That’s the way of the 21st century, right?

Welcome to class size and composition that honours your child as a learner.

I hope your school years are rich with dedicated educators, current text books, a desk for every student, resources and technology your child requires.

May you get the services and interventions your child needs and deserves. May the school building your child learns in be safe and healthy.

Do not take these things for granted.

These things that will seem normal to you have been won back for you at a very high price.

My daughter started kindergarten as the province sued the teachers and her entire school career was marked with cutbacks, disappearing educators and services, deteriorating buildings and resources. The stress of these last 12 years on teachers and learners cannot even be calculated.

We have lost some wonderful teachers, as well as some children who got lost on wait lists or in classes of 30.

What you have today as you start is what my daughter should have had. But do not think this is an investment in education — this is simply the government paying back what it owes, not because it wants to but because it was forced to by the Supreme Court — it’s not new funding.

Don’t be afraid to demand more!

Things cost more now, the needs in the classroom have changed, a new curriculum needs new resources, dangerous buildings are not OK. You must advocate for what you need — for what your child’s teacher needs — they both deserve us, the taxpayers and voters of B.C. to have their backs.

This is your education — welcome and best wishes.

I attended the Feb. 7 planning committee meeting and heard Coun. Bill McNulty decry the ALC for leaving house-size regulations up to individual municipalities. But making decisions, sir, is your job. We elected you, and everyone on council, to make these difficult decisions and to make them for the good of the greater community at present and for generations to come. The ALR has given some very reasonable recommendations and left the fine-tuning up to you. Delta, Port Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and Surrey have all seen fit to limit house-size, home-plate size or both. I understand Pitt Meadows is in the process of doing the same.

The argument that farmers need massive homes because they are barely scraping by and must house multiple generations under

one roof is a deflection of the issue. Palatial mansions with grand fountains, turrets, theatres, and the like are not houses built by people who are barely scraping by. These arguments are being trotted out in order to cloud the decision-making

process with cultural issues.

Please decide in favour of responsible stewardship and our future ability to farm locally and sustainably.

s much as teacher Jean-Ann Stene believes in the talent pool within her classroom, she confessed to being stunned by her students scooping a national citizenship prize.

In fact, Stene, who teaches a Grade 6/7 split class at Ferris elementary, was so taken aback at winning Historica Canada’s Citizenship Challenge, she had to get colleagues to verify the notification.

“It was a bit of a shock,” she told the Richmond News, after her 30-strong class was honoured by Historica Canada at a special ceremony on Monday at the central Richmond school, near Gilbert and Blundell roads.

“Were they really the winners? I had to get some colleagues to look at the note to make sure they’d actually won.”

The students beat more than 1,000 classrooms and more than 88,000 Canadians for the win. They studied for several weeks, before taking the mock citizenship exam, based on the version taken by actual citizenship applicants.

The Ferris students managed an 82.4 per cent average score, after answering 20 questions about the oceans, government and the Indigenous people of the country.

“They weren’t easy questions, I can tell you that.

“The kids were very excited when I told them,” said Stene.

The secret to their success, said Stene, isn’t totally apparent, other than the school’s “strong leadership/volunteering culture.”

“The school is big on service in the community; everyone is very involved and the students are encouraged to meet challenges head-on. Maybe that was a part of it?”

More than 500 students at the school gathered Monday to cheer the winning class and hear from Historica Canada’s Memory Project speaker Jack Purdie and its Passages Canada speaker Raz Chan, both of whom shared their views on the importance of active citizenship.

The students from the winning class also participated in a Citizenship Bingo Game to further demonstrate their Canadian knowledge and civic pride.

“The Citizenship Challenge lets participants see how their knowledge of this country measures up against fellow Canadians,” said Anthony Wilson-Smith, president and CEO of Historica Canada.

“These young students do Richmond proud — and set them on course to be active, engaged citizens in years to come.”

Coalition appoints its first executive director Alan Campbell

he arts community in Richmond gave itself a leg-up this week with the appointment of Richmond Arts Coalition’s first ever executive director.

Local businessman and singer-songwriter Rob Fillo has accepted the newly-created role at the coalition (RAC) and is already setting his sights on building the profile of the Richmond arts scene and developing the careers of artists within it.

Fillo — the owner/operator of Vancouver Media Services Inc. — said, while admitting it was a tad cliché, that he felt he was “born for the job” of promoting the arts in his home town.

“As well as increasing the advocacy of the arts, we need to increase our membership,” said Fillo, a McRoberts secondary grad, who has 20 years of experience in the public arts and music scene.

“We have a lot of ideas and we’re going to be discussing them on April 20, at our AGM at the Gateway Theatre.

“And on April 2, from 1- 3 p.m., we are going to have a members’ café meeting at Waves (Coffee) in Steveston; it’s going to be a mainline (of communication) between myself and local artists.”

Looking ahead to the bigger picture, no pun intended, in Richmond, Fillo said the two main challenges that continue to plague the local arts industry are the dearth of venues and, of course, funding.

“RAG (Richmond Art Gallery) has a mandate for contemporary art and brings in artworks from across Canada and around the world,” said Fillo.

“But we’re looking to try to bring in more art from a local perspective and also to develop the careers of our local artists.

“There is lots of talent and closet artists in

W

orking the “Ask Me” desk, I get asked a lot of questions about a wide variety of different things.

One minute it’s tax information and the next, countries of the world.

I don’t know everything (far from it, even if I act otherwise), but I do need to know how to find everything.

Of course, it does help to know a little bit about a wide variety of subjects, so I know what people are asking about in the first place.

I don’t have a very deep knowledge of a lot of subjects, but I try to know enough to get the idea of where to start searching.

That’s why I like to read science and trivia books. The Science of Why, by Jay Ingram, is the latest from the former host of Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet and CBC’s Quirks and Quarks.

This time, he’s addressing common and sometimes odd questions across all sorts of fields, from health and the body to the supernatural, social sciences to space and physics.

Why do mosquitos seem to prefer biting some people more than others? Why does it seem like campfire smoke follows you around no matter where you sit? Why does it

seem like the moon is bigger when it’s closer to the horizon?

As is his usual style, Ingram is writing for the general public, assuming little or no knowledge on the given topic. He fills in the background as needed in the simplest terms possible, while still being understandable.

He’s had years of experience with this and with keeping things short, so each question is covered in a matter of four or five pages.

There are no math formulas or diagrams of molecules.

It’s illustrated mostly by cute little cartoons to keep things light.

This sacrifices details, but The Science of Why is mostly about fun little questions to bring up in your more science-minded dinner parties.

Though this isn’t his most focused book, it is his most accessible.

His other works, such as The End of Memory: A Natural History of Aging and Alzheimer’s and Fatal Flaws: How a Misfolded Protein Baffled Scientists and Changed the Way We Look at the Brain are equally interesting but far more in-depth.

hen it comes to getting your home ready for re-sale or upgrading for your own enjoyment, getting a fresh set of eyes to give it a once over is a worthwhile investment and can avoid delving into some costly and even unneeded renovations.

That’s where a home stager and interior design specialist, such as Suzanne McIntosh, comes in.

Since 2011, she’s been providing her clients with that unbiased view of what works and what needs work, before planting that for sale sign on your front lawn or deciding on an updated look for your home.

And usually, less is more, said the owner of Richmondbased One

by Design.

“You need that n Suzanne McIntosh new perspective,” said McIntosh, adding much of the work she does to get a property ready for the all-important open house showings deals with, first, de-cluttering a home and often re-organizing the furniture inside to give the impression of more space.

“You don’t want your client to be spending a whole lot of money, but the house should, first of all, be really clean, neat and tidy,” said McIntosh, who works exclusively in Richmond with local realtor Patti Martin. “Everything has to look fresh and new. And absolutely, less is more.”

Most of the time she works with improving on what clients have already got instead of launching into a large renovation project.

And that might be as simple as moving furniture into better positions.

“A lot of people don’t realize the placement of their furniture isn’t lined up and fitted properly to their rooms,” she said. “Maybe they need to omit a few pieces, keep those that are working and place them properly in the room.”

Next, one of the least expensive ways to make an impact on updating your home is by changing the wall colour.

“You should really harmonize the paint colours in their entire home because it neutralizes things and makes the space look bigger,” McIntosh said.

And if a kitchen needs a little freshening up, simply re-painting or re-finishing some cabinet doors, instead of gutting the entire space, could very well do the trick, she noted.

But if something requires fixing, by all means, get it done.

“If anything is broken, like cabinetry, it has to be fixed.

I call those red flags and you don’t want any of those,” she said, adding that also goes for something as easy to remedy as broken light bulbs.

Simple renovations to make your home more appealing, whether you are selling or staying, also don’t need to be restricted to the interior. Curb appeal counts for a lot, so a touch up on the landscaping can go a long way.

“I’d bring in a gardener to make sure everything looks as good as it can,” McIntosh said. “Plant the beds with a border of boxwood, for example. Giving it that clean line look can make a big difference.”

Some of the renovation projects you may want to stay away from, if you are trying to sell your home, would be installing something as personal as a hot tub.

“Some people don’t want a hot tub, or even a pool. They don’t want the maintenance or costs involved with something like that,” she said.

body’s style is so different. Better you make your home look as good as you can with what you’ve got,” McIntosh said. “That way, the new homeowner can come in and change it the way they want to.”

Once the simple changes have been done, many clients have come to McIntosh and told her they wish they’d done them

“So, I have to be careful because we don’t want them to not sell their house now,” she laughed. “And when some of my clients go to their new home they want me to go there, too, and do the same things there.”

prospective buyers can be pretty simple, McIntosh stressed.

“Maximize what you have and make sure everything is in working order. If something needs repair, do it,” she said. “A lot of times my clients are pretty amazed what is possible after just making some really simple changes.”

Pitch in and save on your renos

ome improvement projects can be expensive. While the size and complexity of a project will affect how expensive the project is, homeowners can expect to shell out a pretty penny when they renovate or remodel areas of their home.

But there are various ways to cut the costs associated with home improvement projects.

One such way is for homeowners to pitch in and do some of the work themselves.

Calculating labour costs can be difficult, as such costs can vary greatly depending on the project, the contractor and the amount of hired help that contractor intends to employ.

However, some estimates suggest labour will account for anywhere from 25 to 50 per cent of the overall cost of the project. So, it’s no surprise that homeowners can save themselves substantial amounts of money by doing some of the work themselves.

Homeowners who intend to do some of the labour themselves should discuss this plan with contractors during the vetting process.

Before hiring a contractor, make sure homeowners’ expected labour contributions are clearly defined in the contract.

While it’s best to leave the most complicated parts of a project to the professionals, homeowners can pitch in during the following phases.

• Demolition: Demolition involves more than picking up a sledgehammer and swinging away. Some demolition projects are best left to the pros. For example, any projects that involve exposure to hazardous materials are risky and therefore best left to experienced laborers. However, many homeowners are

capable of safely and effectively pulling cabinets from walls, removing flooring or knocking down drywall. Homeowners unsure of how to approach demolition tasks can ask their contractors to demonstrate the proper technique.

• Salvage: Removing debris and items that will no longer be needed once the renovation is complete is another way homeowners can pitch in. Homeowners remodeling their kitchens may be replacing their existing stoves and refrigerators and hoping to donate these items. In such instances, driving the items to the donation site or arranging for them to be picked up rather than taken off the premises by the contractor or his employees can cut labour costs.

• Cleanup: Homeowners also can save costs by cleaning up after the contractors at the end of each workday. Speak with the contractor about cleaning up the site each day, asking him or her what can be discarded and what must remain on-site.

e live in the best neighbourhood in Richmond. There are 19 families that live in our cul de sac. For many years now, we have been enjoying Tuesday night group walks together, a summer pot luck party and many chats “over the fence” as we try to solve world problems.

A current Richmond problem has taken over some of the lawns in our cul de sac — the dastardly chafer beetle. Chafer beetles lay their eggs in our lawns in July. The eggs hatch in a couple of weeks and then start feeding on our grass roots. The damage to our lawns occur when the crows, skunks, squirrels and raccoons start to dig up the grass in the early spring to look for these tasty treats.

Chafer beetles prefer to lay their eggs in unhealthy lawns where the grass is cut too short.

So, when the problem started to appear in our cul de sac, the best neighbours in Richmond put together a plan. It took us three days to get at least 14 families on board.

We purchased eight-cubic-feet of top grade top soil from Kutny’s Richmond Soils on No. 6 Road for under $20 per family, including delivery.

Saturday morning, at 9 a.m. precisely, a big truck dumped the load of soil in the middle of our cul de sac! An army of people with wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels appeared ready to get to work.

After raking up any damaged patches of grass, we spread a light top dressing of the soil on all of our lawns, then sprinkled it with a medium dolomitic limestone mix; finally, we overseeded the lawn with a grass seed

mix. The limestone counteracts the acidity in our soil which prevents the grass from taking in nutrients necessary for its optimal growth and health. The top dressn Top dressing and overseeding of soil or compost ing was the remedy to deter the chafer beetle. As temperatures climb, our grass begins to grow. The best neighbours in Richmond now know not to mow their grass too short.

Mowing height should be around three to four inches to promote a longer root system that is more resilient to the larvae feeding.

We will also be leaving our grass clippings on our lawns to naturally fertilize our lawns with nutrients after each mowing.

Through the late spring, summer and into the fall, we will water our lawns deeply at least once a week to promote a lush lawn-resistant to damage and drought.

This whole process will be repeated in the fall. By taking these steps in your neighbourhood, you, too, may be able to claim that you live in the best neighbourhood in Richmond.

Solar a long-term solution

ob Baxter, co-founder of Vancouver Renewable Energy, which installs solar panels on new and existing homes throughout the Lower Mainland, says it’s making more sense to look to the skies for home energy.

Rising energy costs and a growing desire to live more eco-friendly lifestyles has spurred interest in solar panels to power our homes.

Although solar panels have been around for quite some time, only recently have homes cloaked in photovoltaic panels, aimed at capturing the rays of the sun, begun to be so visible.

“Solar panel prices have been coming down and it’s becoming more popular.

Our business has really grown in the past three years compared to the 10 years prior,” said Baxter.

So far, however, most of his installations are ordered by environmentally-minded residents, as the financial windfalls are not quite the same as they are in other parts of the world.

“We have some of the

cheapest electricity prices in the world. Most people installing panels are doing it for the environment,” said Baxter.

One of those environmentalists is Coun. Harold Steves.

“If we covered all of Metro Vancouver houses with solar panels we wouldn’t need the Site C dam” for future power needs, said Steves.

Now, even as power costs in B.C. remain low, you still won’t lose by installing panels, noted Baxter.

“Here, you’re still going to get a return on your installation, over the course of the warranty” of the panels, said Baxter.

“And as energy costs go up, it will become more viable financially,” said Baxter.

As it stands, a $30,000 unit will save a single-family homeowner about $150 in energy costs per month.

Baxter said the average home installation is $20,000.

In the summer it is likely that a home may be selling power back to the grid.

His company arranges for safe installation and fills out necessary paperwork with

BC Hydro.

One of the barriers with solar panels is power storage. Baxter said companies aren’t focused on Canada yet, where power grids are relatively stable.

“We don’t see many blackouts,” he said.

Only about 10 per cent of his clients opt for a battery storage system, he said.

he Richmond Ravens’ complete dominance at B.C. Hockey’s Provincial Girls Bantam Championships proved to be their greatest foe in the end.

The juggernaut squad was looking to conclude, a terrific season in grand style last week at the Richmond Ice Centre. They entered the seventeam tournament as the decisive favourite — having gone 31-1-1 in Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association regular season and playoff action.

The Ravens lived up to the status by rolling to six straight victories in round-robin play, outscoring their opponents by a resounding 60-3 margin.

Their “toughest” tests of the week were a pair of 5-0 results against Kelowna and South Island.

That was until they ran into their longtime rival again in Thursday’s championship game.

The Tri-City Predators were ambushed 9-1 by Richmond back on the opening day of the tournament. Yet, the 2015 Pee Wee provincial champions were the lone PCAHA team to taste success against the Ravens this season. They managed a 5-2 victory back on Jan. 11, then played them to a 2-2 in the playoffs.

Sure enough, it was a much different Predator team that showed up for the final.

Tri-Cities broke a scoreless deadlock in the second period and just missed on at least three other chances to extend their lead. They made it a two-goal game early in the third, then held off a furious Ravens charge for a well-deserved 2-1 victory — surprising many in the capacity crowd at the RIC’s forum rink.

It was a type of game Richmond simply hadn’t experienced for sometime.

“Our girls were really nervous at the start and you could see that,” said Ravens head coach Tony Lindsay. “The longer we went without scoring, the more we seem to tighten up. “Throughout the whole provincials, we blitzed every team from the beginning but that’s the way (this tournament is).

It’s that one game winner take all.

“Give Tri-Cities credit. They played a real strong game and were worthy champions. They deserved it.”

The Ravens finally broke through midway through the third period, setting the stage for a terrific finish. They came inches away from tying it when the best player on the ice — first-year standout Katie Chan — rang a shot off the post with just over five minutes remaining.

“We haven’t had a game like that all year where we have gone into the third period and hadn’t scored a goal,” continued Lindsay. “I’m really proud of the fact our girls were down 2-0 and easily could have quit at that point but didn’t. We

definitely had some chances to tie the game.

“We were not pushed at any point in the provincials and sometimes you lose your edge a bit.

The three other times I have won provincials (with other teams) we had always had some kind of setback in round-robin play . This time there was no adversity and it was the first close game we had. “(As far as that earlier 9-1 game) Tri-Cities have been up and down all year. But they have beaten us before and showed tonight they were capable of doing it again.”

The two teams lingered on the ice well after the medal presentations — knowing this was the end of a terrific rivalry. The players will be going in so many directions next season, including the B.C. Midget AAA league and academy programs.

Some are even expected to skip their secondyear of Bantam eligibility with Chan topping the list. It was the speedster’s first season of girls hockey after playing for the top boys rep team in her age group with Seafair Minor Hockey.

“She is fantastic. Probably, from an offensive standout, the most natural goal scorer we have had on the female side. No question her ability is as good as I have seen at the female level,” added Linsday who has coached girls and boys teams in Richmond for many years.

“There are lots of options for her and she needs to find a level where she will be challenged and continue to get better.”

Devils add provincial bronze to league title Mark Booth

I

t was one final heartbreaking chapter in a year-long battle that prevented the Richmond Devils from potentially completing a dream season.

The Devils won their first-ever South Coast Women’s Hockey League regular season title and were looking for more hardware on their home ice at last weekend’s provincial championships at the Richmond Ice Centre.

They took care of business with a pair of wins in round-robin play over the Meadow Ridge (2-1) and TWU (3-2). That set the stage for Sunday morning’s semi-final tilt with South Fraser TNT. It marked the fifth time this season the Devils had faced the reigning provincial champs and each result was a one goal difference with South Fraser (2-1-1) holding a slight edge.

Sure enough, it was another colossal struggle against the evenly matched powerhouses. The difference proved be Chelsea Wilson’s goal with 7:02 remaining as TNT hung on for a 1-0 win. Richmond had its share of chances, including a power play in the final three minutes but couldn’t solve South Fraser goalie Jennifer Price.

a couple of hours later and skated to a convincing 6-3 victory over the Fraser Valley Jets in the bronze medal game. They finished the championships winning three of four games and doing just about everything right,. Yet, they will have to wait another year to take another run at the club’s first-ever provincial title.

“I told the girls right after that game there was nothing bad to say. The whole weekend you

played exactly the way we wanted you to. Pucks bounce your way and sometimes they don’t, ” said Devils head coach Tony Cheema.

“What a way to end it. (On the winning goal) no one knew where the puck was. It was a great example of the way we played against each other all game long.

A goal like that makes sense. “We were looking for a lucky bounce like that too. It happens. What a game.”

Cheema admitted he was quietly hoping he would see the Kamloops Vibe in the semifinals — a team his club enjoyed moderately better success against (1-2-1) in regular season play.

The tournament’s No. 3 seed not only knocked off South Fraser in round-robin play but did it again in the championship game with a 1-0 victory.

It marked the third straight year South Fraser and Kamloops had

squared off for the gold medal.

That was another streak the Devils were hoping to end. Instead, they will savour their regular season championship and bronze medal.

Richmond could potentially have a dangerous one-two scoring punch with a healthy Alex Yallouz joining Lindsay Dipietro. The team captain missed the entire campaign with an injury. Dipietro was outstanding in her first season with Richmond, winning the league scoring title with 37 points in 20 games. She added eight more at the provincials, including a goal and three assists in the bronze medal win.

“I was thinking what kind of a difference Alex would have made this weekend,” added Cheema.

“She would have provided an extra scoring touch, created a few more opportunities and bounces our way. At the end of the day we ended up with one trophy and can’t be too greedy. Next year it will be the provincials.”

The Devils will conclude the season by hosting a jamboree this weekend at the RIC. The threeday event features South Coast teams Richmond, Surrey Mavericks, South Fraser and Meadow Ridge taking on Kelowna and the Grand Prairie. The Devils will play Kelowna on Friday (9:30 p.m.) and Grand Prairie Saturday (4 p.m.).

e hasn’t coached at the senior boys level since guiding the last Richmond team to win a provincial championship, but that hardly means basketball is no longer a huge part of Paul Eberhardt’s life.

The longtime Richmond teacher and current athletic director at RC Palmer was named PAC West Coach of the Year for his work guiding the Langara Falcons men’s team. It marks the third time he has won the award since taking on the duties five years ago, shortly after RC Palmer was crowned B.C. champs in 2011.

He guided a young Falcons team to a 14-4 record this past season — a marked improvement on a 13-8 campaign a year earlier. The Falcons’ run for provincial honours ended with a 68-63 semi-final loss to Capilano.

Eberhardt is also president of B.C. High School Boys Basketball Association and chairs the selection committee for Basketball B.C.’s provincial team program.

It’s no coincidence RC Palmer is hosting the annual B.C. High School Boys All-Star Game on Sat., April 8. This year’s expanded format will see the top 1A and 2A players tip-off against each other at 5 p.m., followed by a 3A versus 4A showcase game at 7:30 p.m.

Eberhardt has also paid close attention to the Richmond league when it comes to recruiting for his Langara program. This year’s roster featured former McNair star Royce Sargeant who was named to the Pac West All-Rookie Team.

Other local talent included: Anthony Demch (McMath), Antonio Jhuty (Palmer), Timmie Choi (Palmer) and Randjoh Hare who started for Eberhardt’s championship team at Palmer. Another longtime Richmond teacher and basketball coach — Jon Acob — was a Langara assistant.
