W

hen she set up the event page on Facebook, Nora Fadel didn’t expect much of a reaction from the community.

So when she woke up the next morning to find hundreds of replies and messages of support had flooded in overnight, 17-year-old Fadel started to get excited about organizing a peaceful march to protest the visit of U.S. president Donald Trump’s sons to Vancouver on Tuesday.

Fadel and her friend, fellow Cambie secondary Grade 12 student Yasmin Ahmed, created the Resist 4 Peace event, which was set to march from Jack Poole Plaza in Downtown Vancouver on Tuesday at 4 p.m. to coincide with Trump’s sons — Eric and Donald Jr. — opening the Trump Tower hotel the same day.

By Tuesday afternoon, more than 700 people were expected to turn out for the march, from the plaza to the U.S. Consulate, with more than 2,500 expressing an interest in attending.

“It went crazy overnight,” said Fadel, who organized the online event page two weeks ago.

“People were so supportive, but were then telling me that I needed generators, megaphones and all sorts of equipment. It was a little overwhelming and I had to tell people I was just a high school student.

“People backed off a little and were a little more patient…I was worried about everything I needed to organize, but the community really responded in a big way.

“I was offered tents, megaphones, generators, speakers, sponsors; it’s been amazing.”

When initially learning of the Trump family visit, Fadel contacted Facebook group Women of Colour, asking if it was organizing anything with regard to the opening.

“They said ‘no,’ but (they) suggested I organize something. So I said ‘OK’ and set

up an event page on Facebook, but didn’t really expect anything to come of it,” said Fadel, a Muslim, who was born and raised in Canada, after her parents emigrated from Iraq in 1996.

“My family (in Iraq) are suffering so much because of the irritant policies of Trump.”

Fadel, who lives near Bridgeport and No. 4 roads, said she felt compelled to “do something.”

“We’re going to have this man, with all his negativity towards so many communities, coming to town with his brand. He can put his name on the building, but we’re going to show him that we’re united.”

On Tuesday, as well as the march — which wasn’t due to pass Trump Tower on West Georgia Street — the Trump brothers were expected to be greeted by a protest organized by Occupy Vancouver, which hosted an all-day rally outside the hotel.

19 FACTS about the Harvest Power Odour Issues and the City of Richmond’s Actions Odour issues in Richmond due to Harvest Power’s composting operations in east Richmond are an important concern of the City. Despite the City’s limited jurisdiction, it has been a very active participant seeking to eliminate these odour issues.

Regulatory Authorities 1. The Province of British Columbia (the Province) regulates air emissions per the Environmental Management Act (the Act).

The Province delegated this authority to Metro Vancouver to manage solid waste and air emissions in the region. The City does not have any authority under the Act. City staff have met with senior Ministry of Environment and Metro Vancouver staff on multiple occasions and Mayor Brodie has met with the Minister of Environment. The City continues to urge the Province as well as Metro Vancouver to address the ongoing odour issue.

2. After the City repeatedly tried to work with all parties in an attempt to reduce the odours, Harvest Power’s air quality permit was renewed by Metro Vancouver on September 30, 2016. Under the permit, Metro Vancouver can at least temporarily halt the flow of organics material if Harvest Power fails to comply with the terms of the permit.

3. Harvest Power is located on land owned by the Federal Government through the Port of Vancouver. Harvest Power is presently appealing the air quality permit to the Environmental Appeal Board in part on the grounds that provincial and regional regulations do not apply to the facility because it is situated on federal land. The City has no jurisdiction to directly regulate the land on which Harvest Power is located.

4. After reviewing complaints about its ability to enforce the permit, Metro Vancouver has allocated more staff to address the volume of complaints.

5. Odour measurement is not regulated explicitly under the Province’s Act. Only Metro Vancouver has authority under the Act to regulate air quality regionally. In the fall of 2016, the City reiterated to the Province the need to amend the Act to explicitly deal with excessive odours. The Act has not been amended by the Province.

6. Since August 2016 the City has responded to six fire incidents at Harvest Power related to a storage pile of combustible materials.

As a result, a Notice of Violation and Order to Comply was issued to Harvest Power. The City’s actions have resulted in the elimination of this additional air quality hazard.

Organic Waste Received at Harvest Power 7. Harvest Power reported in December 2016 that it expected to process 180,000 tonnes of organic waste at the facility for

all of 2016. The City has expressed concern regarding the total volume processed as well as the types of materials being received by Harvest Power. The City believes that at its peak, the volume was considerably higher, thus compounding the odour issue.

8. Some members of the public have alleged that human waste and animal carcasses are being treated at the site. Harvest Power and Metro Vancouver have advised that, in line with the conditions of their licenses and per inspections, the facility does not receive any human waste or animal carcasses. City staff have inspected the site and have found no evidence of such default.

9. As a result of the City’s actions and public complaints, Harvest Power has reported publicly that it has temporarily ceased accepting highly odourous materials such as out-of-region waste, seafood and cruise ship waste.

10. Effective January 3, 2017, the City began diverting a portion of its organic waste from Harvest Power to an alternative licensed facility. In addition, through the City’s efforts with Metro Vancouver, Harvest Power has confirmed that they have temporarily reduced volumes of organics being accepted at the facility. Despite previous assurances, Harvest Power indicates that by mid-March they will no longer accept shipments consisting only of food waste.

The City’s Service Agreement with Harvest Power 11. In 2010, the City entered into a Service Agreement with Richmond Soil and Fibre Ltd. (subsequently taken over by Harvest Power) for processing organic waste collected by the City from single-detached homes and duplexes. In 2016, the City delivered 19,500 tonnes of organic waste out of the 180,000 tonnes accepted by Harvest Power.

12. The City recently issued a Notice of Default to Harvest Power resulting from the odour issues. Under the existing Service Agreement, Harvest Power will have 30 days to remedy odour issues to the City’s satisfaction.

The City may choose to terminate the agreement if it is not satisfied with Harvest Power’s actions to resolve odour issues and subsequent remedies are insufficient.

Termination would ultimately result in redirection of the City’s 19,500 tonnes to an alternate licensed facility.

13. To further monitor Harvest Power’s progress on reducing odours, the City is undertaking testing including independent air sampling throughout the community.

Permit Appeal 14. As noted above, Metro Vancouver’s air quality permit for Harvest Power contains provisions to allow Metro Vancouver to stop Harvest Power from receiving organic material after a number of proven exceedances over a two week period. As a result, Harvest Power has appealed Metro Vancouver’s air quality permit on the grounds that the so-called “sniff test” to detect exceedances is not scientific or precise. The City supports the provisions in the permit that allow Metro Vancouver to eventually stop Harvest Power from receiving organics and is thus a party opposing the appeal filed with the Province’s Environmental Appeal Board. Appeal hearings have yet to be scheduled.

15. Harvest Power recently invited the City and Metro Vancouver to enter into mediation regarding the air quality permit. Mediation would delay the entire process and potentially water down the provision in the permit to stop Harvest Power from receiving organics upon default. The City has no plans to engage in mediation of the appeal with Harvest Power without the ability to immediately stop the odours during the discussion.

16. There have been approximately 24 additional permit appeals from Richmond residents detrimentally affected by the excessive odours.

Community Health and Engagement 17. At the City’s urging, Vancouver Coastal Health assessed the impacts of odours on public health prompting them to state that “while Harvest Power is generating extremely unpleasant odorous compounds, the air emissions from the operation are unlikely to cause health effects in addition to ones triggered by the offensive smell.”

he City of Richmond has issued a notice of default to composter Harvest Power, which now has 30 days to remedy its ongoing odour issues or face early termination of its contract with the municipality.

And while there has been a significant drop in odour complaints in Richmond during the past month, the jury is still out as to whether or not Harvest Power’s stink has truly been vanquished.

“We have [definitely been] seeing improvements with respect to odours. They are a result of all the operational changes we have put in place over the past several months,” said Harvest Power spokesperson Stephen Bruyneel.

In February, Metro Vancouver recorded 72 Harvest Power-related complaints, whereas in January it recorded 425.

Ray Robb, Metro’s district director for air quality, said the company’s actions thee or four months ago has likely contributed to the reduction in odours.

Bruyneel notes the facility has reduced organic waste intake, improved air circulation in compost piles, upgraded bio-filters to mitigate odours and suspended operation of its anaerobic digester (the waste-toenergy generator).

Robb said air quality officers have not observed detected odours in two weeks.

“I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but our officers aren’t there when it does,” added Robb.

He cautioned, however, that February is typically a low season for odours because organic material is colder and there are

he Richmond Youth Dance Company returns to the stage in March with Mosaico, a collage of different works creating one beautiful piece.

Mosaico (Italian for mosaic) is a collection of ballet pieces presented by members of the Richmond Youth Dance Company.

Under the direction of Miyouki Jego and with guest artists Megan Phillips and Delara Tiv, young dancers will showcase selfchoreographed numbers

that reflect their individual expression and professional development.

Phillips, a professional actor and acting teacher, brings a technique that helps the dancers use comedy as a way to increase confidence in their artistic expression.

Tiv, meanwhile, uses her mastery of Flamenco to help the dancers incorporate strength and grace.

All these elements are tied together by the Richmond Arts Centre’s senior chore-

ographer and head teacher, Jego.

Mosaico marks the seventh annual dance showcase performed by the 24 auditioned dancers of the Richmond Youth Dance Company.

Performances take place on Friday, March 3 and 4 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, March 5 at 2 p.m. at the Richmond Cultural Centre’s performance hall. Tickets are $7 and are available in advance at the centre or by calling 604 247-8300.

“We are not prepared to assume that the reduction in odour complaints is the result of Harvest Power having fixed the problem.

We are assuming the problem is ongoing and must be rectified,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

He said the notice of default should apply to any subsequent complaints this year and puts in motion a legal mechanism to potentially end the shipment of 19,500 tonnes of organic waste collected by the city and sent to Harvest Power, annually.

The city’s contract with Harvest Power expires in 2019, however, if terminated early, the city’s organic waste — which only represents about 10 per cent of all of Harvest’s intake — will be diverted to another regional compost facility, noted Brodie.

The City of Vancouver has voluntarily diverted its waste away from Harvest, added Brodie, who is also optimistic a new compost facility in Surrey will further alleviate Harvest’s intake.

On Tuesday, Bruyneel said the company was disappointed with the notice and will need time to review it.

“If you have one policy to cover all, this will be peaceful,” said Wong.

However, the Richmond District Parents Association supports the creation of a separate SOGI policy.

“There is a need for more resources to be made available and more education on the subject in our district,” stated president Dionne McFie, via email.

Teacher and Steveston-London secondary Rainbow Club organizer Lisa Descary said, “there’s a lot of misunderstanding and lack of knowledge” about what a policy will achieve.

Trustee Sandra Nixon said the policy will aim to better educate everyone (staff and students) in light of the special circumstances surrounding LGBT people, as noted by Western pediatricians.

Recent statistics show violent hate crimes in Canada are most likely to be committed against LGBT people and 16 per cent of all hate crimes are committed against LGBT people, despite being a small, non-visible and underrepresented portion of the population.

“When a group is faced with systemic marginalization and have not had a level playing field, sometimes special policies are needed to shift awareness,” said Nixon.

The Parent Cares group counters that, when it comes to all hate crimes, most (51 per cent) are racially motivated. Both Ho and Howu — as well as Descary — were vocal supporters of anti-racism rallies in Richmond late last year following what Parents Care called “shocking” flyers that discriminated against Chinese people.

The Canadian Pediatric Society (CPS) concurs.

“The challenge for gay and lesbian youth is to develop a healthy and integrated identity in the context of negative stereotypes and prejudice,” notes CPS. Moreover, there are numerous examples within the district where minorities are recognized in a special manner.

Early last month, Ho introduced Black History Month to the board, while Wong acknowledged International Mother Language Day, with a special emphasis on Aboriginal language.

The district recently signed a new, unique Aboriginal Education Agreement with First Nations groups to foster better understanding of Aboriginal history.

Howu supports these initiatives, but said they are different than a SOGI policy, because she contends they don’t reflect personal values.

The petition also raises concerns such as transgender people exposing their genitals in bathrooms.

And while Howu cited recent statements from the American College of Pediatricians (an anti-abortion group founded to preserve the two-parent, male-female family unit) that claimed tolerating gender dysphoria is “child abuse,” the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the professional body representing accredited pediatricians, came out in support of special assistance and better education for LGBT people.

“As pediatricians, we know first-hand how increasing burdens and barriers for youth who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) can increase their risk of depression, substance abuse, dropping out of school, or suicide,” noted AAP.

Vimy Ridge call sign originates from Richmond

Radio operator making noises around globe ahead of special centenary of famous battle

I

t’s one of the most pivotal moments in Canadian world war history and a Richmondborn-and-bred initiative to mark its centenary is already making noises around the globe.

Monumental celebrations are planned for April to mark the 100th year since the Canadian First World War victory at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in north-eastern France.

And an idea conceived by Richmond amateur radio operator Don Studney will be front and centre near the famous memorial at the former battlefield in Europe, where, despiteforcing the occupying German army out, 3,598 men lost their lives during the bloody, four-day battle, with another 7,004 wounded.

The victory on April 12, 1917 played a significant role in the Allied Forces’ success in the war, not least due to the impact of the Canadian Signal Corps, which used wireless radio for the first time ever to communicate with key personnel, such as spotters.

It’s for that reason that Studney and 16 fellow radio enthusiasts from across North America — including two from France — will be broadcasting 24/7 around the world from Vimy Ridge for 10 straight days, using the call sign “TM100VIMY.” “About five years ago, myself and a group of others thought of putting something together

for Vimy’s centenary anniversary,” said Studney, a retired UBC professor of medicine, who lives near No. 2 and Williams roads.

“Many of us have pretty patriotic feelings around (Vimy Ridge) and we thought, if we did this, it would honour those who fell and recognize the significance for the country.

“The Canadian Signal Corps came to fame there, using wireless for the first time, communicating with spotters and such. They based themselves at Vimy after that and played an important role (thereafter).”

Studney and the other, mainly Canadian, operators formed the Vimy Commemorative Station Society more than two years ago and set about organizing their commemoration.

The society has spent the last two years planning the broadcast from Vimy Ridge, including making several trips to the site to meet and coordinate with Veteran Affairs, which is organizing the commemorations.

“We will be right at Vimy Ridge, next to the visitor centre, about one and a half kilometres from the memorial itself,” added Studney,

who has been an amateur radio operator on and off for around 55 years.

“We will be in a portable building with two transmitters, two amplifiers and seven antennas. We will be making voice communications and sending out Morse codes...with three shifts per day, from April 1 to 9.”

For those not familiar with amateur radio communications, whomever is transmitting with the Vimy Ridge centenary call sign will solicit radio chat from around the globe, with the hope that anyone who hears it, will recognize the sign.

“Depending where they are in the world, they could reply with a call sign and might chat back and forth for a bit, maybe exchange names,” explained Studney of the interaction.

“The communication would be logged onto a computer and I can also send this little card to the contact, marking the fact they communicated with the Vimy 100 call sign.”

Since Jan. 1 this year, the society has been farming out the call sign to operators in each province in Canada; allowing them one week each to use the sign and make as many contacts as possible.

“Only that province is allowed to use the call sign for that week (usually about a dozen operators),” said Studney.

After B.C. had its “turn” about two weeks ago, the total amount of “contacts” made across the country was more than 25,000.

Vimy Ridge, despite its small size in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, was of huge strategic importance during the First World War. It commanded a great field of fire and blocked advances up the adjacent broad valleys towards important industrial sites.

he public has only a few more days to provide input into proposed single-family home building regulations.

At issue is the size and perimeter landscaping of new homes and how they fit into an existing neighbourhood.

Whereas last year city council addressed home height (lowering new homes to 29-metres), largely by terminating land-use contracts, this time around it will look at building setbacks and matters of landscaping that can affect urban landscape and rainwater management.

There are proposals by staff to, among

other things, decrease the footprint of new homes, increase the spacing from the property line, mandate tree planting and increase the amount of green space to diminish the size of driveways — when a home is demolished.

Other proposals see the city restricting the height of front yard fencing, as well as the size of car garages.

The proposals do not address home design.

Council may still yet determine not to change anything, or only some things, depending on feedback.

Six open houses have concluded, but the public can read the display boards online at LetsTalkRichmond.ca and complete a survey no later than March 5.

“I noticed about half way through that one of the people was recording me using a cellphone she was trying to hide on her lap,” said Eby. Eby said he checked the event sign-up sheet, and saw the woman had registered under the name Caroline Bleay, who is a researcher in the B.C. Liberal caucus at the Legislature. But she hadn’t indicated she was with the Liberals, said Eby. “I think the government should be accountable for sending her there to record these youth and to pose as a young person interested in politics when in fact she was trying to dig up dirt for the election,” said Eby. B.C. Liberal caucus director Primrose Carson said Bleay was just doing her job. “It is entirely appropriate for caucus research staff of all parties to keep track of positions being advocated by members of other caucuses,” Carson said in a statement.

Meanwhile the NDP’s Richmond-Steveston MLA candidate Kelly Greene said a similar video was posted online by the Liberals, from her acclamation ceremony last month. She suspects the source of that video is also a taxpayer-backed caucus staffer; Greene denounced the acts as “deceptful.”

As we work to protect farmland, we must not overly control how our farmers choose to live as they work the land and raise the next generation of farmers.

If you ask anyone in Richmond what they think of agricultural land, you are certain to get a strong response. From people who are vehemently opposed to using agricultural land for anything other than farming, to those who think that housing affordability could be solved by building homes in the Agricultural Land Reserve - the opinions and ideas run from one extreme to the other.

Our public engagement on the review of Farmland Housing Regulations launched on www.LetsTalkRichmond.ca this past Monday (Feb. 27) and it runs until Sunday, March 12. As well, we’re holding a public open house on Thursday, March 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. Please make an effort to come out and have your say.

Next month, some of the local farm markets will start opening and local produce will become available. My kids and I will be doing our part by eating lots of local produce. Here is one of our favourite recipes that uses local ingredients:

Many of us who grew up here in Richmond feel some connection to the farming history. Protecting farmland gives us the feeling that we are protecting our history as well as protecting our future food supply. Richmond Council has a long history of protecting farmland.

Cranberry Muffins Blend: 1/4 cup butter 1 cup sugar Beat in: 2 eggs In separate bowl, combine dry ingredients together: 2 cups flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt Alternately add wet and dry ingredients to butter mixture: 1/2 cup milk 1 tsp vanilla Stir in: 2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries coarsely chopped 1/2 cup chopped pecans (use pumpkin seeds for a school-friendly snack) Drop into 12 lined muffin cups Bake at 350 degrees for 25 - 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Protecting the land is the first step - as it takes more than just dirt to farm. It takes farmers who have the knowledge and the passion to farm. It takes sunshine, equipment, fertilizer, drainage, and irrigation to farm. It requires markets that will buy the crops and turn farmers’ efforts into sustainable living. If we are serious about protecting farmland, we need to look after our farmers.

Since 2002, when avian flu and mad cow disease crippled some farm sectors, the Agricultural Land Commission began allowing various activities and operations on farmland to help farmers earn a living. These non-farm uses include wineries, cideries, breweries, agri-tourism, farm retail sales, bed and breakfasts, and events such as weddings and music festivals. If we want our farmers to farm the land, rather than engage in non-farm activities to make a living, we need to support them by buying and using their products.

Man recalls ‘merciless torment’ of gay teen Dear Editor, Re: “LGBTQ policy could create cultural shift,” News, Feb. 24.

I applaud the school trustees for voting to develop LGBTQ educational policy for schools, as well as the students who came out in the open to advocate for such a policy.

As a 70-year-old openly gay man, who attended Richmond schools during the 1950s and 1960s, I am familiar with the stigma, prejudice and bullying endured by gay students in that time period. If you were caught engaging in homosexual acts you could be jailed on charges of “sexual perversion.”

One of my schoolmates, a 19 year old, was sentenced to two years in prison for having consensual gay sex with his 17-year-old friend. The 17 year old was tormented mercilessly at school. The lesson for other gay students, such as myself, was to remain “in their closets” and lead double lives, which is a dreadful way to exist.

In 1969, Prime Minister Trudeau’s edict “we have no business in the bedrooms of the nation” was accompanied by legal changes, giving some protection to gay persons and things have largely improved.

The fact that gays comprise only four to 10 per cent of the school population in Canada but account for one-third of the suicides for those under 18 years of age, should provide sufficient rationale for instituting a special policy for LGBTQ students.

Shame on the Parents Care group and trustees Alice Wong and Jonathan Ho for their ignorance and veiled bigotry. Can’t they find something useful to do?

As far as gays not participating in sports, it goes with the territory. When I was 10, my father bought me a football. I told him “I don’t want a football, I want a fondue set!” …and I still don’t have a fondue set.

Parent voice ignored Dear Editor, Re: “LGBTQ policy could create cultural shift,” News, Feb. 24.

As a Richmond parent, I am disappointed by the attitudes expressed towards those who oppose the LGBTQ policy.

I firmly believe that parents are the first educators and have the right to be actively involved in their children’s education. The voices of parents are being ignored and disregarded by most school trustees in this policy development. It is shocking to see the response of a trustee mentioning the various key players in making this policy, and putting parents last in the list of priorities. Parents know what is best for their children and their views should be better acknowledged.

On the school board’s end, communication and partnering with parents in making decisions about this policy has been broken and ineffective. There is a lot of misunderstanding in the perspective parents bring to the discussion.

The LGBTQ policy stems from the issues of bullying and discrimination found in this minority group. Parents want to respond and call for a policy that protects all students, including the LGBTQ students. It is concern-

ing that the rights of a specific minority group are being elevated.

There is more exclusion of students in this policy than one might think. Questions arise on addressing anti-bullying to other vulnerable minority groups, who experience struggles in the same light. Isn’t the school board choosing to neglect other students who deserve the same attention in these issues?

Making this policy is just the beginning of a large movement to move from tolerance and acceptance to understanding and embracing. Rather than encouraging to understand and embrace the rich diversity of all students in Richmond, only the LGBTQ students will be taking the spotlight. Promoting a specific group is not the same as bringing unity by valuing every student in our community.

I commend trustees Jonathan Ho and Alice Wong in choosing to support parents and they, along with the parents disagreeing with this policy, should not be targeted as barriers.

Why are parents being criticized for voicing their concerns? Parents want to closely work together with the school board on these issues, and not be shut out of the conversation.

Councillors should attend open houses

Tunnel fixes exist, but Libs steer clear

Dear Editor, Re: “What makes for effective consultation debated,” News, Feb. 14.

The councillors should be allowed to attend open houses.

How else would they get a sense of what the public is experiencing? Although I can see how a councillor expressing his/her opinion at an open house could be construed as undue influence; asking questions to make sense of the issue at hand seems to me to be more a sign of engagement.

The councillors are also residents, but their experiences in the city are likely to be sheltered by their power. Not many builders would dare build a mega mansion right next to a

Brian Doctor’s comment about not fixing it if it ain’t broke is an interesting one. The tunnel — in fact — ain’t broke. Congestion can be fixed any number of ways.

The bridge will take from three to five years to construct. Your commute will increase exponentially while Highway 99 is being rebuilt.

Does that appeal to you?

A bridge built in a different location would avoid that. Another tunnel would avoid that. Increasing transit would avoid that.

Changing container port hours of operation or truck-tunnel access could avoid that. All of these could ease congestion in the tun-

Why? Because Christy Clark and the BC Liberals want to force public support for a bridge, to run massive freighters of LNG, coal and jet fuel up the Fraser River.

That these developments do not meet international standards, are illegal in the USA, that they put public safety and marine habitat at risk, is of no concern to Clark any more than commuters being purposely trapped in traffic.

Mr. Doctor, if you want traffic to ease as soon as possible, consider that twinning the tunnel will take a quarter of the time and take one fifth of the amount of money to build. Histori-

cal overruns of 30 per cent show that the bridge will be $5 billion at least. And, as reported in the news this week, using the new Port Mann Bridge as an example, it will lose $86 million a year for 41 of its 50-year life span.

This all assumes the new bridge doesn’t fall over, because the intention is to build it on what is essentially quicksand. If you don’t like commuting through years and years of construction traffic, write Premier Clark and tell her to stop her phoney war on commuters, and stop the bridge proposal immediately.

Dear Editor, Re: “Talk to us stuck in traffic before you dis the bridge,” Letters, Feb. 22 As a result of the misinformation put out by the Christy Clark government, Mr. Doctor apparently doesn’t understand why he is caught in a traffic mess at the tunnel. Everyone agrees that a new crossing is needed to ease traffic.

The real issue is between a quick, inexpensive twinned tunnel, or an expensive, unjustifiable bridge.

If Doctor thinks that the BC Liberals care whether he is stuck in traffic or not, he’s sadly mistaken.

If Clark cared, semi-trucks would be banned from the Massey Tunnel during peak morning and afternoon traffic periods, and the port would operate 24/7. This is what every major port does in North America to ease traffic. Since one semi-truck displaces four to five cars, B.C. transportation minister, Todd Stone, could ban them today, which would add 3040 per cent road capacity for commuters, immediately.

hen Jana Seale packs up her guitar and heads to Steveston for her March 16 performance at the Chinese Bunkhouse at Britannia Heritage Shipyards, it will be a true homecoming for a global traveller.

Seale, who graduated from Richmond secondary in 1984 and worked as a photographer for the Richmond Times newspaper before it was shut down in the early 1990s enjoys, returning to favourite old haunts.

“Before music, which I discovered later in life, it was photography for me and I worked for a year on cruise ships as a photographer,” she said. “I did that for about a year. And later, when I was playing and singing in Calgary, I saw an ad for cruise ships and wondered if I could go back and work as a musician. So, I contacted a couple of agents and worked on cruise ships full time from 2006 to 2014.”

During that time her job took her from Alaska to the Caribbean, and from Australia to the Mediterranean.

“And I visited pretty much everywhere else in between places that I would never have seen otherwise,” she said. “For me it was. It’s a tough job and how much you enjoy it depends on your attitude.

“As a crew member, even as a musician, you work harder than you ever thought you would. So, generally speaking it’s not a fun existence. But I was working five to six hours, mostly in the evenings, which left me time to go into port, if we were docked. But I made the most of it, met some amazing people and still have friends all over the world.

It was a very enriching experience.”

After leaving the cruise ship life, Seale has been a land-based regular on the casino circuit. And her upcoming appearance at the bunkhouse as part of the Steveston Folk Guild’s show lineup is her second in the past few years.

“It’s really cool to come back,” said Seale, who now lives in Chilliwack. “I was just in Steveston a few days ago to

visit a friend. And it’s still home in a lot of ways. My family spent a lot of years living there. And when I’m there, I really hope to see people I know.

“Plus, the bunkhouse is such a lovely place. They get such great musicians in there, so I am happy they asked me back.”

Music, as a career, almost came as an afterthought for Seale.

After putting her camera down, she played with a variety of bands — blues, country, jazz and rock.

“But being in a band can be hard.

I felt some of the time I was not doing what I wanted to do,” Seale said. “So, I finally picked up the guitar and got serious about it. And I gradually got more gigs and from that point music became more of a career.”

She had also heard about the Selkirk College music and technology course in Nelson and went there to study for two years.

And now, even as a seasoned performer, Seale said she enjoys her time in the spotlight and still values the butterflies she gets before every gig.

“I still have stage fright. I’ve just learned to manage it a little better,” she said. “But if I ever lost it, that would

not be a good thing. You don’t want to be arrogant in this business. If I am nervous, it’s because I want to do well.

That’s a lot better than walking in and thinking, ‘I got this.’”

Asked who has been a musical inspiration for her over the years, Seale said she puts great importance on those people she’s performed alongside.

“It’s been people on a personal basis rather than the famous ones,” she said. “But if you want to go for bigger names, I was influenced by Nancy Griffith, who’s kind of an alternative country performer and an amazing songwriter who tells great stories. And her guitar playing is wonderful.”

She also counts Gordon Lightfoot as someone special, also because of his storytelling.

“I’ve loved him, even before I became a musician,” she said, adding there will be some of his songs on her playlist at the show. “There’s always going to be some Gord on there.”

Seale plays at the Chinese Bunkhouse (5180 Westwater Drive) on March 16. Show time is 7:30 p.m.

hat comes to mind when you hear the word polio?

Perhaps you recognize it as an illness, or that it’s mostly abolished, or nothing at all.

But no matter what comes to mind, what you may not be aware of is that polio is a disease that is still relevant in the world today and you can take part in eradicating it with a fundraising walk March 5 at Garry Point Park.

Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease that is most common amongst children under the age of five, and is still present in countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is an extremely easily transmitted disease, spread from person to person, mostly through contaminated water.

can lead to paralysis and even death.

Although there is no cure for this terrible disease, there is a way to prevent it, with a vaccine Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign uses to immunize all children in impoverished

countries.

Not only will fundraising from the walk go towards the fight against polio, but the funds will also go towards vaccinations, building medical infrastructure, medical personnel, and research.

The campaign needs your help more than ever, as it has been discovered that the original method of immunizing, using the oral polio vaccine, carries a risk of causing polio because it is made from a live polio virus.

Now’s your turn to help. Register to be a part of the McMath Secondary School Interact Club’s 5km Walk or Run Event, Move for Polio on March 5 at Garry Point Park. Registration is $15 until March 1, and $20 until March 3.

Meet VCH Richmond’s Chief Operating Officer Jennifer MacKenzie For Jennifer MacKenzie, Richmond’s Chief Operating Officer, health care is bred in the bone.

The daughter of a doctor and a nurse, MacKenzie followed her parents’ lead with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. Then, in a swap of the Atlantic for Pacific coast, the Cape Breton native moved to Victoria where she obtained her MBA from the University of Victoria.

With her focus on health care management, MacKenzie has worked with large, academic organizations, including Vancouver General Hospital, the BC Cancer Agency and BC Children’s Hospital. Since her arrival in Richmond in 2014, MacKenzie has overseen a number of projects aimed at shifting care from hospital to community. Read on to find out why…

What has struck you about Richmond in the two years since your arrival?

I would have to say it’s the magnitude of growth, especially within the senior’s population. Richmond is the fourth fastest growing city in BC with one of the fastest growing 75+ age groups in the province. We expect this age group to increase by 75% over the next 10 years.

How does this influence the way people will receive their health care into the future?

We embarked upon a seniors’ engagement initiative last year. Seniors told us repeatedly that they want to remain in their own homes for as long as possible, and it is our responsibility to help them do that. As a result, much of our work will continue to be focused on the development of a three-pronged Seniors’ Strategy that aims to: ■ Keep people healthier and in their own homes longer.

■ Return people to home from hospital quickly, and with the health care support they need and medical intervention as required.

■ Improve seniors’ access to residential care quickly when it’s needed.

What are your goals for health care in Richmond?

We must rebalance the system of care in Richmond.

I believe that 80% of the care any patient or client needs should be available in the community setting and Richmond Hospital, in effect, should be the place for those with life-threatening illnesses or in need of surgery.

By providing more care in the community, and by forming strong partnerships with local physicians, we can keep people healthier and at home longer.

Health care is all about people. At VCH we’ve been celebrating 15 years of progress, passion and patientfocused care by sharing the stories of some of our incredible staff who have been with us since our beginning in 2001.

I’ve been working at VCH for 15 years and it’s like my second home. In the ICU, when I see patients recover from being critically ill or injured, when I see that determination, I am inspired. My coworkers also inspire me when we work together as a team and accomplish great things, making the patients better. There are a lot of great memories, and one that stands out. We had a 24-year-old male patient who had ALS. He became part of our ICU family. We loved him. We all worked together to make his life better. He was amazing.

I was here when Stephanie was born. I was there for her delivery. I can tell you that she looks a lot like her mother. I could not have imagined then that baby Stephanie would become a nurse and would come back here to work beside me for the past 10 years! She calls me Auntie Alice. Of course they all call me Auntie Alice now because they are all younger than me. Thirty-nine years is a long time. I work casual now and that’s enough. Maybe it’s time to retire!

Growing community-based care

Use your ED wisely Hospital Emergency Departments (EDs) are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in almost every community VCH serves. EDs aren’t a first-come first-served operation; they exist to help the most critically ill or injured patients as quickly as possible.

If you have signs of heart attack or stroke, extreme pain, severe bleeding, broken bones, shortness of breath or respiratory distress, then an ED is where you need to be. But if it’s something less serious, like flu symptoms or a stomach virus, you’ll probably have to wait. And it could be a long wait.

We know this is frustrating, but there are better options.

Richmond’s new Community Care Clinic now offers expanded hours and weekend service, increasing convenience for patients.

By providing more care and health services in the community, VCH Richmond can support people to live in their own homes safely, and for longer periods of time.

Richmond’s expanded Adult Day Program is a prime example. By late spring, VCH Richmond will have effectively doubled Adult Day Program spaces; from 20-25 spaces to 45-50 spaces. This will deliver 37,650 new service hours annually at two locations in Richmond – the new program at Austin Harris Residence in Steveston, and the expanded program at Kinsmen Place in City Centre.

“By increasing access to Adult Day Programs, seniors with mobility and cognitive-related needs can remain safely in their own communities,” said Nellie Hariri, Director, Primary, Home & Community Care, VCH

Richmond. “These spaces also provide respite from caregiving for the seniors’ loved-ones who may be at-risk of burnout.”

Another recent community-based service expansion is proving important for continued health and wellbeing after patients are discharged from hospital.

VCH Richmond’s new Community Care Clinic is located directly across the street from Richmond Hospital, at 6091 Gilbert Road.

Offering expanded hours and weekend service, the new clinic quadrupled treatment space from the previous Cook Road site, and allows patients to book their appointments in advance, at times and days that suit their schedules and lifestyles.

A total of 210 new residential care beds will be available by 2020 for Richmond seniors who can no longer live safely at home. These beds will be located at East Richmond’s new Hamilton Village and at South Richmond’s renovated Fraserview Lodge.

Richmond kids are well protected Richmond is known as one of the healthiest communities in Canada and it also has a reputation in another important area - the highest kindergarten vaccine coverage rate in VCH and one of the highest in the province.

More than 90% of Richmond’s children are immunized against communicable diseases.

“It’s fantastic,” said Diane Bissenden, Director of Population & Family Health, VCH Richmond. “We want to have healthy children, we want to have healthy families, and we want to have healthy communities – immunization is a big part of that.”

Bissenden credits this high vaccine coverage rate to the excellent partnership between public health, community physicians, the school district, and engaged and committed Richmond families.

During this time, we introduce patients, like Mrs. Chao, to the Quick Response Team who works with the patient, their family or loved ones, to ensure appropriate equipment and home health supports are in place for when the patient returns home.

To keep seniors healthier and at home for longer, VCH Richmond has a philosophy in place to return people, especially the frail elderly, to their own home as soon as safely possible.

It’s called Home is Best. Evidence shows that home is the best place for a person to recover once hospital care is no longer needed. Care across VCH Richmond reflects this philosophy and all hospital team members work with patients and their families to ensure seniors can return home, with support, whenever possible.

Why does my insurance cost always go up from year to year?

Of all of the questions we receive this is probably the most common one and the truth of the matter is simple; almost every insurance policy (business and home policies) has a built in feature called ‘Inflation Guard’.

The Inflation Guard feature protects the reconstruction value of a building and or contents to ensure the property can be replaced at current prices, i.e. if a policy and property was purchased in 1980 and and the limit was never changed over the years and a claim occurred in 2016 the amount of insurance or limit would be in 1980 values. As we all know, in general the cost of materials, labour and over all construction costs do not go down but they do go up. So the reality is that although the cost of insurance does generally marginally increase so does the amount of insurance available to customers and this factor is designed to protect the best interests of clients.

A typical inflation factor for many policies is 3% of the insured limit. As always, we are happy to answer questions on this or any insurance topic.

Q: Should a Seller continue to show their home after they have an accepted offer?

YES! Take a back-up offer if you can.

GAIT is the way in which someone walks. Each of us is born with a unique biomechanical combination of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and skeletal structure which is designed to carry us through a lifetime of walking. This gives us our unique, natural way of walking. But sometimes, we are forced to change the way we walk, whether it be due to an injury, accident, weight-gain, surgery, habit, aging or simply over-use. These events put unexpected strain on parts of our body, resulting in unusual burden on the lower parts of our legs. This typically culminates in changes in foot structure, resulting in a change in the way we walk (and stand), and, ultimately, in pains felt in various other parts of the body.

The Steveston-London Sharks are headed back to the B.C. “AAA” Boys Basketball Championships, just not with all the momentum they were hoping for.

The Sharks settled for second place at the Lower Mainland Championships after falling 101-92 to the Byrne Creek Bulldogs on Friday night at the Richmond Olympic Oval. They at least will have an opportunity to ease the memory of last season’s heartbreaking defeat in the provincial final.

That was hardly a given a month ago and StevestonLondon’s late season resurgence places them among the favourites at the Langley Events Centre next week.

“I thought we were hitting our peak but now we got a week to figure everything out,” said Sharks head coach Mike Stoneburgh.

“We will still be among the top five or six seeds and just need to go out and play.”

The Bulldogs might just be the most athletic team in the province at any tier. Led by Grade 10 star Bithow Wan, they play a blistering tempo with plenty of full court pressure. It caused the Richmond champions all kinds of trouble in the opening half.

Sockeyes fall to Steelers for 3rd straight year in playoffs Mark Booth

t’s a playoff script all too familiar to the Richmond Sockeyes and a lack of production away from Minoru Arena was the biggest culprit this time.

The Sockeyes’ season came to an end on Sunday at the Burnaby Winter Club in a 3-2 game seven loss to the Grandview Steelers.

It marks the third consecutive year Richmond has bowed out in the opening round of the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs and each time it was to its Tom Shaw Conference rival.

The Steelers put the visitors into an early 2-0 hole and they never could recover, despite dominating much of the contest as the final shot total (42-23) would suggest.

Over the course of the series, the Sockeyes averaged five goals per game in their three wins on home ice. However, they never scored more than twice in the four road losses and head coach Judd Lambert doesn’t have to be reminded the difference it makes for his team’s fortunes.

“A third goal means we are 20 games over .500 this season. When we score two or less we are 15 games below. The split stats are quite astonishing when you look at them,” he said. “If we don’t have that third goal our chances of winning is a very small percentage and there is no margin for error too.

“We had some breakaways and open nets that we didn’t capitalize on tonight or it probably ends up being a different game.”

Lambert also wonders what the outcome would have been had his team got off to a better start.

With four minutes left in the period, the Sockeyes were trailing 2-0 and being outshot 10-2. Finally they showed signs of life with nine unanswered shots on goalie Matteo Paler-Chow before the intermission break.

They would solve him 51 seconds into the second period on Connor Alderson’s power play goal. However, a poor shift followed and Huemmert’s second of the game made it 3-1 just 73 seconds later.

“That was the difference in the game,” said Lambert of his team’s tough start. “We were flat and sluggish and I’m not really sure what the reason was. It’s disappointing. I hope our players learn from this, especially the ones that will be continuing to play competitive hockey. There has to be a full level of intensity for the entire 60 minutes.”

Brett Gelz gave his team some hope when he converted a rebound with a 1:02 remaining. Defenceman Jackson Munro had the best chance in the dying seconds but his shot went right into the chest of Paler-Chow who earned first star honours.

“We didn’t do a very good job on rebounds or deflections from the point and those are the way you score consistently,” added Lambert.
