Third homicide victim of the year named Alan Campbell

ichmond recorded its third homicide of the year on Friday, after a man died in hospital from stab wounds.

On Monday afternoon, homicide investigators named the victim as 24-year-old Francis Le, of Surrey.

Shortly before midnight on Friday, Jan. 27, Mounties were called to

Richmond Hospital after a report of an unresponsive male in the parking lot. When the officers got there, the man was found to be suffering from “injuries consistent with foul play.”

According to police, despite the best efforts of doctors, the man succumbed to his injuries and his death is considered a homicide.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has now taken over the investigation.

IHIT said Monday that Le’s murder does not appear to be related to the two previous homicides that occurred in Richmond in January.

They are working closely with the Richmond RCMP to determine what events led up to the stabbing and where the stabbing took place.

“It is still early in the investigation and, as the motive and offence location remain unknown, investigators are asking anyone with information to contact IHIT,” said Cpl.

Meghan Foster, of IHIT. “It cannot be stressed enough that, should one choose to associate themselves with a criminal lifestyle, they are not immune to the dangers and risks that come with it.”

store caught by police allegedly selling marijuana and illegal marijuanarelated products has been the recipient of numerous City of Richmond bylaw infraction tickets.

The Richmond News reported last week how Richmond RCMP executed a search warrant at the at the WeeMedical Wellness Center on Anderson Road, just a few yards from the front door of Richmond City Hall.

Police said that, during the search, they found dozens of bags of illegal marijuana and marijuana-based products, including candy-like items, for sale.

And according to the City of Richmond, bylaw officers have been pursuing the store for some time for operating without a licence and had issued a “number of tickets.”

“We were continuing to seek to bring them, voluntarily, into compliance with our bylaws; however, they continued to operate,” said city spokesperson Ted Townsend.

“We will continue to monitor the premises to determine if further action is necessary.”

Both the RCMP and the city believe WeeMedical hasn’t opened since it received the RCMP “visit” last Tuesday, Jan. 24.

When the News arrived at the store on Monday afternoon, the blinds were closed and the door was locked.

According to the police, around 180 small bags, believed to contain marijuana, and quantities of baked goods, confectioneries and other edible products, believed to contain marijuana, were seized during last week’s search.

The Mounties described a scene where they arrived at the store and, even after entering, their presence was barely noticed by staff, who were, apparently “preoccupied” with another activity.

Among the products seized by police were marijuana-laced gummy worms, jelly cola bottles, chocolate bars and potato chips.

“As the law currently stands, it is illegal to operate a business without a li-

cence and it is illegal to sell or distribute marijuana/marijuana-based products.

“Until such time as the law changes, you can most certainly expect a visit from us.”

Ahead of the expected federal legalization of marijuana, the City of Richmond has already taken a proactive approach to preventing the potential proliferation of marijuana dispensaries across the city.

City councillors approved a bylaw amendment to ban dispensaries, but may revisit the issue should federal legalization take effect.

A federal report with a commitment to introduce legislation on legalizing marijuana is expected this spring, according to Canada’s Ministry of Justice.

n appeal by the Richmond RCMP for members of the public to jump onto a new website and identify suspects has proved to be fruitful.

The Richmond News reported last week how the local Mounties wanted people to help put some names to faces of suspected, serial property offenders who had been caught on CCTV surveillance footage.

And within a few days of the story being published, the RCMP reported that at least two suspects had been identified by more than one source who had viewed the “Richmond Help

“We have had people reach out to us and what’s good about it, is that certain identifications had more than one response from the community and from different people; so we’re very pleased with that,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“I think it just needed that small kick to get people to notice.

“We have identified two people who have been on that list for some considerable time.

“We’re now trying to increase the capacity on the site and looking to add more suspects on there as soon as we can.”

Hwang said it was “extremely helpful when people come forward,” even

with a little bit of information.

“They should know that they’re making a difference in their community.”

Richmond RCMP launched the page — RCMP.ca/RichmondIdentify — near the end of last year, with a rotation of images caught on personal or commercial surveillance cameras.

The vast majority of the images are of serial break-in offenders, thieves and fraudsters, all of whom have been caught on cameras belonging to the property owner or store in question.

A recent rise in the number of people arming themselves with surveillance equipment has led to more images coming into the hands of the police.

he Richmond School District has received $1.7 million in interim back pay from the provincial government in the wake of an extraordinary Supreme Court of Canada ruling last November that restored class size and composition bargaining rights for teachers.

The money is expected to have an immediate impact on some classes across the city.

The payment — negotiated by the BC Teachers’ Federation — is part of a $50 million injection into the public education system this month, which, pro-rated for half a school year, represents only about one-third of the $300 million that will be needed moving forward to restore class sizes and composition to 2002 levels.

Al Klassen, president of the Richmond Teachers’ Association (RTA), said Richmond will be able to hire about 35 full-time teachers with the money.

She said large secondary schools will likely receive two fulltime teachers, whereas the smallest elementary schools may only see one teacher for one day a week.

In such an instance, the teacher would be deployed to classrooms as needed, determined by the principal and staff.

The new money is welcomed news for the school district, noted secretary treasurer Mark de Mello.

The district faced a $3.3 million deficit this year and balanced the budget by taking $2 million from a precarious $9.8 million accumulated operating surplus.

This year the district was faced with yet another decline in enrollment, from 20,756 students to 20,345. The 411 student drop was far more than what was predicted (300), said de Mello, who expects another decline next year.

Because the district is funded on a per student bases, a decline in enrollment means a decline in revenue.

However, de Mello noted the extra enrollment decline will not affect this year’s budget, but he fears the district will be faced with more cuts next year, which could eat into the new funding it recieves thanks to the court ruling.

Meanwhile, Klassen said specialty needs vary and include requiring more co-teachers, resource support, English language help and more speech and language assistants.

In all likelihood, no new classrooms will be formed this year, said Klassen. There may be a rare instance in which a new teacher is introduced to one overloaded classroom, however, and the workload is shared.

According to the BCTF the $50 million payment is only a “first step” in restoring class size and composition.

“It means hundreds more teachers will be in schools working with students across the province in a matter of weeks,” said BCTF president Glen Hansman early last month.

“The second and most important goal — full implementation of the 2002 collective agreement language — will now be the focus of talks between the two parties.”

In November, the Supreme Court was quick to condemn then Education Minister Christy Clark’s legislation that stripped the right to bargain class size and composition.

At the time, Clark called it “balanced” legislation. The court ruled, in less than 30 minutes, that it was not.

As a consequence, the BCTF notes that the number of classes with four or more special needs students has ballooned from 9,559 to 16,516, between 2007 and 2016.

“It’s important for parents and the public to understand how our contract language made a difference for kids,” Hansman said.

“It guaranteed supports for students with special needs, and manageable class sizes for all. It ensured teacherlibrarians, counsellors, English language and other specialist teachers were there to give students the individual attention they need.”

Klassen noted new funding should help to restore extracurricular programs, as teacher workloads ease slightly, allowing them more flexibility to volunteer their time.

City Scene Poppy memorial street signs honour profound sacrifice

By Ken Johnston Councillor As a City Councillor, I am used to individuals challenging decisions made by City Council. I respect that as a fundamental part of our cherished democracy.

I must admit I was disturbed and disappointed by a letter to the editor in the Richmond News a while back that objected to Council allocating up to $45,000 to commemorate local soldiers who lost their lives in military service (the actual cost came in at $30,000.)

The program to add a poppy emblem to street signs, of streets named after those who served our country, was initiated by the Friends of the Richmond Archives.

During the fall of 2016, 275 new street signs to 61 Richmond Streets were installed – it was completed in December.

A few years ago I had the opportunity to visit the beaches of Normandy in France where, during World War II on June 6, 1944, allied forces, including Canada, staged an enormous assault. I visited many of the Canadian cemeteries at that site.

On the same trip we also visited Saint Julien, a town in Belgium; I stood at the actual site where my wife’s grandfather was wounded in World War I. wounded there. I have never been so moved in all my life after witnessing the rows of graves–to get a sense of the sacrifice made by so many young people.

Since 1928, a daily act of Homage to the allied forces of World War I, has been conducted in Leper, Belgium under the Menin Gate Memorial. The last post is played at 8 p.m. sharp every evening. I had a chance to witness this sobering event. An event conducted around 31,000 times to-date. Surely, if a foreign country can recognize the sacrifices made by our troops on a daily basis, the least we can do is install poppies on street signs.

Our recognition of our fallen on Remembrance Day is an important occasion, and the installation of the poppy memorial street signs allows us the ability, every day of the year, to see the last names of these men and women, and remember their sacrifice.

Our soldiers fought for the right to speak freely and voice opinions; fought for democracy.

I know I can speak for all members of City Council in saying we were honoured to support this program.

few dozen Richmond residents have organized a public protest at Richmond City Hall Saturday afternoon (12 p.m.) to put pressure on elected officials to stop odours emanating from the Harvest Power compost facility.

“We need to show our elected officials our unhappiness at the stench in Richmond and raise awareness in our community as to the source of the terrible stench that has pervaded Richmond over the past four years,” said organizer and “Stop the Stink Richmond” Facebook group member Joanne Charity.

It’s “time to put a stop to this abomination that assaults our noses on a daily basis. Quality of life and property values are being

affected! Stand up and be counted. Join us at noon on Saturday in front of city hall. No matter what they say, we, the taxpayers of Richmond, hold city hall responsible for our quality of life!” stated Charity.

There are now about 650 members of Stop the Stink Richmond.

Many residents have expressed frustration at politicians passing the buck and not taking responsibility for the odours that are believed to be impacting quality of life and exacerbating pre-existing health conditions, but are said to not be toxic or imminently dangerous in nature, according to Vancouver Coastal Health.

Harvest Power received millions of dollars of federal grants to start its business and leases federal land from the Port of Vancouver.

However, MP Joe Peschisolido has reiterated that

“there’s no official role for the Government of Canada to play.”

Meanwhile, the provincial Minister of Environment grants licenses to regional governments to issue air quality permits.

“Air quality is the responsibility of the regional district known as Metro Vancouver,” RichmondSteveston MLA John Yap told the News Monday.

“I know our city is making strong efforts to get enforcement happening.”

Meanwhile, Coun. Harold Steves and Mayor Malcolm Brodie represent Richmond on Metro Vancouver’s board of directors.

Presently, Metro Vancouver is enforcing a new air quality permit as of Jan. 1, but has not found grounds to close Harvest Power.

The City of Richmond claims Harvest Power has until the end of February to comply with its contract with the city.

such acts of violence. Places of worship are a sacred sanctity and should always be maintained, irrespective of one’s faith.”

Ismail added that the BCMA is asking the community to be “more vigilant and report to local authorities any suspicious activities, incidences or threats.”

He also called upon the Muslims of B.C. to help authorities protect all locations of worship from “such violent and illegal acts.”

“It is our belief that no group or individual in a free and just society should live in fear because of their ethnicity, faith or religious beliefs.”

The victims of Sunday’s tragedy ranged in age from 35 to 60, police said. There were 39 people at the mosque who were not injured.

The accused shooter, Alexandre Bissonnette, reportedly posted several anti-Muslim comments on social media over the last year.

Bissonnette, 27, of Quebec City, was apprehended and has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder.

The RCMP are saying that additional terrorism-related charges may be forthcoming.

“We are in the midst of addressing those concerns with the police,” said Sheikh.

“We understand (Quebec was) an isolated incident, but there is a narrative out there that might precipitate some angst in the Muslim community.”

According to Sheikh, the BCMA president, Daud Ismail, has met with the RCMP to discuss those concerns.

The BCMA is currently the largest Sunni Muslim organization in B.C., owning and operating several Islamic centres, as well as Muslim schools in Richmond and across the province.

In a press release, Ismail said that it was “with great sadness and heavy hearts that the BC Muslim Association offers deep condolences to our brothers and sisters in Quebec City.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of innocent victims of this tragic, senseless and horrifying attack inside a Quebec Islamic Cultural Center.

LETTERSto the Editor Time-out needed on megahomes Dear Editor, In Richmond today, grandiose and ostentatious homes of 20,000-square-feet or more are being built and sold in the ALR. These properties are a real estate “special buy” because they allow people to build huge homes not subject to the foreign buyers’ tax as ALR homes are exempt from said tax.

Moreover, there is an additional tax break on the land if it’s farmed. This serves property owners who lease the land for farming, while being subject to none of the size constraints of a regular residential property.

At the council meeting this last week (Jan. 23), many people spoke and brought photographic and anecdotal evidence to show how big the homes on the ALR have become, and how far removed they are from any agricultural purpose.

There were also people who claimed that they need big homes to accommodate multigenerational families.

I believe multi-generational families can be accommodated, even if the city restricts the size of the residential plate on the ALR to 7,000-square-feet. This size is adequate to build a 5,318-square-foot house, as is recommended by the ministry of agriculture and still leaves room for building garages and accessory farm buildings.

How many people can a 5,318-square -foot house fit?

According to Engineering Toolbox, a website that provides design and construction information, 100-400-square-feet is more than adequate space for a person to live in.

If we do the math, a house this size could shelter a family of 10-12 people with ease.

People who want to farm in Richmond today cannot afford to buy in the ALR as prices have shot through the roof because it is being monopolized by a few for building and selling mansions.

Allowing 10,000 or 20,000-square-foot homes leaves the ALR vulnerable to land speculation.

Cities regulate house sizes on all other kinds of property. Besides, the ALR is meant to be land primarily for farming, not for residential use.

Farming is hard work and it should be rewarded. However, the city should allow no one, from any community, background or profession, to milk the system. As a society we need to move past the “race argument” and come together around common goals, which in this case is the preservation of farmland for agriculture.

Agricultural land is being degraded and frittered away parcel by parcel and this has to stop now. Council, please act and put a moratorium on this kind of building until you are ready to pass a new bylaw controlling house sizes on the ALR. A moratorium is needed so that there is no land rush as we saw recently for LUC properties.

George Eliot said in her novel Middlemarch, “Wherein lies power, there lies blame, too.”

I believe the power lies with the Richmond council and mayor, as the provincial government has given local municipalities the power to regulate house sizes on farmland.

House size limits reasonable Dear Editor, I don’t buy the cultural argument with respect to the size of farm houses. This is about money and investment and what Richmond will look like in 30 years.

Limitations on the size of houses on farmland is a reasonable regulation. My mom and dad were born on farms with multigenerational families living under one roof and those houses were typical farm homes.

Although times, standards, expectations and land values have changed, a limit on the square footage of houses on farmland, even if it allows for somewhat larger houses, is reasonable.

Times have also changed in that farmland is being purchased, speculated on, developed and, in some cases, not farmed.

One additional point is that the mega mansions contribute significantly to the spiralling cost of farmland. It’s a vicious cycle.

Farmland prices skyrocket partly, if not largely, because wealthy investors, both local and offshore, buy land for their estates.

The price per acre becomes way, way, way too high for a farmer to purchase and actually make any money.

So, farmers are priced out of the market by the very “investor class” that caused the prices to go so high in the first place.

Then, the investor can say, “look, nobody is farming the land (in a real sense, not just for the tax break).”

It’s left to all of council to act and I hope it will place a limit on farmland house size that helps to keep farmland prices a little bit down and sends a message that Richmond’s farmland really is for farming.

It is long past that Richmond should act on this issue as have other jurisdictions.

It’s time for council to act.

‘Dumpers’ lack basic respect Dear Editor, I continue to be at a loss when I see household furniture dumped on the side of a quiet stretch of country road.

How self-centered do you need to be to justify your behaviour? It is pathetic, and to think these people may have kids. And today’s lesson we are teaching them is what?

How little respect and disregard for our community and environment must you have to do this? The polluter’s sense of entitlement is pathetic and their expectation that someone from the farm or city will clean up their garbage angers me.

Very, very sad. I will be the first person to turn a dumper in if I catch them.

Learning common language helps create connections Dear Editor, Re: “Talking about community,” “Smiles, laughter come to ‘roost’ at RCCS,” “Students expanding their English horizons,” News, Jan. 27.

I would like to commend your reporters Graeme Wood and Alan Campbell for their column and stories in the Richmond News. It was very refreshing to read about the efforts of people such as Julia Chan, John Chow and Joanna Kato for making an earnest effort in learning to communicate in English.

This is the way to go.

Organizations such as the RCCS, SUCCESS and RMCS must be commended for these initiatives aimed at helping new Canadians, as well as longtime residents, learn English.

A common language is the bond that binds us all together as Canadians. It opens

up so many doors and possibilities in addition to broadening one’s horizons.

There is an old saying that it is never too late to learn. These students are proving it to be true. Learning at least one of Canada’s official languages — French or English — should be every immigrant’s top priority.

As a matter of fact, learning as many languages as possible is a great asset. Rather than confining ourselves to our ethnic enclaves, we need to reach out and integrate. This is what Canada is all about. We should be proud of our heritage and mother tongue. However, at the same time, we must be equally proud of being Canadian.

Learning and communicating in at least one of Canada’s official languages is a great way to do that.

Time for some fresh MLAs to deliver in Richmond Dear Editor, The recent announcement by the BC Liberals to provide $217 million in new school funding for Surrey is obviously good news for the residents of Surrey. This money is in addition to the $100 million committed to Surrey’s schools last year by the Liberals.

With the provincial election on the horizon, this is not the only funding the Liberals are promising Surrey.

The Liberals have also promised a seventh lane on the Alex Fraser Bridge and a new intersection at Highway 91 at 72nd Avenue. (Though these projects are not actually in Surrey, Surrey residents will benefit significantly). These two projects will cost $100 million.

And of course there is the promise by the Liberals to fund one third of the capital cost of the Surrey LRT project and the Pattullo Bridge replacement. The government’s share will be more than $1 billion.

The Liberal commitments for Surrey are in excess of $1.5 billion for schools and transportation alone!

Contrast this level of funding for Surrey with those for Richmond.

Funding for schools, zero.

Funding for transportation, zero. (The Massey Tunnel Replacement Project is not for the benefit of Richmond.)

Perhaps there have been some funding announcements for Richmond that I have

missed, but given the Liberals’ saturation ads on TV and never-ending photo-ops, it seems unlikely.

Richmond consistently elects three Liberal MLAs (and perhaps a fourth this year).

Despite this loyalty to the Liberals, our MLAs have essentially delivered nothing but scraps for Richmond.

Of course, in Surrey, the Liberals will be fighting hard to maintain or even gain seats in the May election, while they know that Richmond will blindly deliver them three (or four) MLAs. Thus, they have no reason to actually address Richmond’s needs.

Our current MLAs have provided spectacularly mediocre representation to Richmond because they know they can treat us with contempt.

Richmond needs fresh MLAs. As long as the Liberals consider the ridings here as a lock, we will never receive a fair share of government funding.

lack History Month is coming to Richmond this weekend for only the second time in its 21-year history.

A full calendar of events is lined up for Richmond, starting this Friday at 5:30 p.m. with an opening ceremony with Mayor Malcolm Brodie and special guests in city council chambers at city hall.

Among them will be Lt. Col. Robert Alolega — of the 39th Service Battalion, stationed on No. 4 Road at Alderbridge Way in Richmond — who will be giving a tribute to black African vets in Canada to highlight their contribution to the country.

And as part of the Black History Month (BHM) festivities, Phylis Adelyne States will be singing gospel and jazz for the audience.

“It’s a very rich history and there have been many contributions to Canada and its culture,” said the organizer of Richmond’s BHM events, Mary Wilson.

“We want to share our stories with the rest of Canada and everyone is welcome to attend any of the events.”

The musical ensemble of Mark Beaty and Calvin Dyck of The Vancouver Island Symphony will include instrument demonstrations, duets of classical, fiddling, and movie music, animal sing-a-long songs, clapping and rhythms, and the opportunity to interact and meet the musicians.

This interactive concert is geared for all ages but is specially designed for children under five-years-old and their families.

Because being active is especially encouraged, there will be lots of open space for audience members — young and not-so-young — who also want to get up to dance and sing.

Beaty is a long-time bassist who has played on numerous JUNO-nominated albums and Dyck is the concertmaster for the Vancouver Island Symphony.

Together, they have more than 10 years of performing educational concerts.

The one-hour event begins at 10:30 a.m. and tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door with attendance free for those less than 12-months-old. Seating is limited.

three-day extravaganza of Chinese New Year events is happening at Canada Berries Winery this weekend.

The Respon – 2017 Chinese New Year Fair will feature 60 vendors and booths, traditional arts performances, and activities for the entire family.

The fair is billed as an event suited for everyone.

The festivities kick off with an opening ceremony on Friday, at 2 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. there will be family-friendly activities,

games and lots of food choices.

The free event is supported by Chinese Ministry of Culture, Richmond Tourism, Canadian Community Service Association, and many other local business organizations and communities.

This is the third year organizers are putting on the event. Last year, guests were privy to traditional Chinese dancing as well as a lion dance.

This year, more vendors and activities are expected to boost participation.

ince 1946, the ANAF (Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada) Unit 284 has been a hub in the community.

It’s a place where members and their guests have convened to celebrate and remember the sacrifces others have made for a better tomorrow.

Now, organizers of the facility on No. 1 Road at Chatham Street have revamped their efforts to provide a long and varied list of events and activities to keep the business side of the operation vibrant and in the public eye. And by achieving that, ANAF Unit 284 can continue to be a community gathering place that helps support a vast array of community groups and charities.

“Last year, we donated almost $60,000 to the community,” said Doug Zeron, a committee member with ANAF 284, adding the funds are raised in a variety of ways, including Friday and Saturday night meat rafees. “People

come for that and they stay for the great entertainment we have for them afterwards. And we have been doing a great job to encourage people to stick around, so the bar and kitchen can make some revenue. And through that we can help give back to the community.”

Among the local groups beneftting from ANAF 284’s continued success are the Salvation Army, Richmond Food Bank, SOS Children’s Society, Variety Club, the BC Kidney Foundation and the local chapter of DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) organization.

ANAF 284 even reaches beyond the city limits, from time to time, to help when there is need, such as during the aftermath of the devastating fres last spring in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

“We sent $5,000 as a donation that actually went to all of the pets that had to be left behind by their owners,” Zeron said. “Somebody had to help

take care of them with food and other things. And one of our members drove out there with the cheque.

“There’s just about nothing left that we don’t support in one way or another.”

One of the mainstays of ANAF 284’s attempts to draw in business is a steady diet of top quality entertainment inside the 304-seat facility. At the forefront of the efforts is former music industry veteran Ray Ramsay, who is the organization’s recently appointed entertainment consultant.

He has been tapping his contacts in the business to create a varied playlist of performers, plus a new Open Mic Jam event on Sundays which showcases all-comers.

“In the live entertainment business, you have to keep things fresh,” Ramsay said.

“With some bands, you can set your watch by them and nobody wants that.”

“That was a great show,” Zeron said. “It got people up and excited.”

Future bookings are regularly featured on ANAF 284’s Facebook page, where some acts have video clips of them posted.

For those who want to see some raw, new talent, Sunday nights are reserved for the new, Open Mic Jam. “From initial indications, it will bring more business in,” Ramsay said. “It’s not a contest, but an opportunity for people who want to strut their stuff to get up there and do that.”

The house band, Midnite Eagles, provides support in a variety of music styles, from country and rock to blues and pop.

“They’ll get the ball rolling and other people will show up with their guitars or want to sing,” Ramsay said. “We held the frst one a short while back and lots of people came up and made comments afterwards that they had a great time and are interested in coming back to hear more.”

The next Open Mic Jam is Feb. 12 and falls in the middle of the B.C. Family Day long weekend.

“If you want to come and play or perform, bring your posse – have them cheer you on,” Ramsay said. “Just make

sure you’re over 19 and if you’re not a member here, sign the guest book and remove your hat when you come in.”

As for membership requirements, Zeron said to gain entry and possess an active membership, you need to be either a current or retired member of the armed forces, or frst responder (police, fre service).

Associate memberships are also available to the general public and require sponsorship by two current members in good standing.

Associate membership also allows the holder to be accompanied by two guests who are required to sign in.

Annual individual membership fees are $40 and $75 for a husband and wife.

And once you’re in, ANAF 284 has plenty more to offer over and above the live entertainment.

“We have lots of special events,” Zeron said. “There’s a western days jamboree in July

that includes an outdoor barbecue. It’s the only time of the year when visitors are allowed to come in here and wear a hat, as long as that’s part of their costume.”

There’s also an Oktoberfest party, Halloween costume party and a New Year’s Eve celebration that is traditionally sold out.

“We’re always looking to hold different functions here to bring people in and create a reason for members to keep their membership current,” he said, adding the active number is around 1,000.

“A lot of other places (veterans’ legion halls) do have their problems keeping their numbers up. But we offer things most others can’t,” Zeron said.

“This is essentially a brand new facility. We can book all kinds of events, from birthday parties to weddings.

In The Classroom Why not consider a student exchange program?

A love of travel can be fostered early in life by parents who encourage their children to immerse themselves in various cultures.

One way for students to do that is to participate in student exchange programs.

Many schools are affiliated with exchange programs, and families can look into programs on their own, as well.

Study abroad and exchange programs vary in length and the ages of students.

Some may be a full-year program consisting of 10 months of education, while others may last just a semester or trimester.

Exchange students usually are placed with private host families who have been carefully vetted and are eager to participate in the program and share their rich culture with students.

Parents and students considering exchange programs should take the following into consideration as they look to learn more about their options.

• Age limits vary depending on the program, but many work with high school students between the ages of 15 and 18.

• Apply for a student visa from the country a student plans to visit. This process may take some time, so build it into your schedule.

• All fees are the responsibility of the student visiting the host family. These fees may include, but not be limited to, insurance, tuition and application fees. Students

Yes, the Canadian government and the Royal Canadian Mint plan a wide range of coin and stamp issues this year. I will describe the coins that have already been issued, as well some that will be issued very soon.

The 2017 Silver Proof set is the only set so far that features the 150th anniversary coins that will be coming out in circulation.All 6 of the standard coins (5 cent - toonie) have new images celebrating Canada’s birthday.

The silver dollar shows the map of Canada with our flag and 150 over-imposed on the map. As reported in the Richmond News previously the toonie was designed by a Richmond resident. I strongly suggest a full mechanical audit of all your equipment and plumbing and look into setting up a maintenance program. PJB Mechanical does full mechanical audits for free and will provide you a full report and suggestions as well as a proposed maintenance contract.

A few things to consider are; Boilers and Hot Water Tanks, Drain Flushing, Parkade Fans, Air Intakes, PRV’s and Perimeter Drainage. Every building is different and should be assessed individually.

How do I make my home and property more favourable to an appraiser after the completion of a renovation or remodel?

Selling a home was difficult even before the market started to slide. Now every penny counts more than ever since we now sit in a Buyer’s market, which means that every leaky window, every dangling gutter and every ugly cabinet can make a big difference in the price of your home. While we all have a natural tendency to nest in the places we live, the reality is that many of the changes you make (or don’t make) can make or break your home’s appraised value.

What to do and what not to do before and after a home appraisal?

When remodeling: DO tackle all the major features in each room.

Kitchen — DO have: • An open layout • Newer matching appliances, stainless steel • Extra perks like small beverage refrigerators, dual dishwashers, instant hot water and a central vacuum clean-out • Granite countertops • Custom cabinetry DON’T try to fix outdated cabinetry or countertops. These need to be replaced if you want to add value — new hardware won’t be enough to fix them.

Bathroom — DO have: • New fixtures and mirrors • A freshly painted tub if necessary • Natural light • Good ventilation • New or refaced cabinetry DON’T let your bathroom feel dark or have any outdated colors or materials.

Exterior — DO: • Pick plants that are evergreen and perennial so your yard always has pops of color.

• Put in new exterior light fixtures.

• Add on extra touches like shutters or planter boxes to give your exterior charm.

• Put a fresh coat of paint on the front door.

• Keep grass and landscaping healthy and not overgrown.

• Replace worn-out fencing.

DO pay attention to low-cost finishing touches that can make a big difference. Peeling or chipped paint, mildew, exposed insulation or pipe insulation and visible dry rot are small details that your appraiser is sure to notice. If you have a basement, make sure there are no signs of water leaks, moisture or mildew. Visible evidence will get mentioned in the appraiser’s report.

DON’T try to change your home’s style. Always stay with the style of your home and go with the features that enhance it the most.

Marlins respond with decisive win Mark Booth

Now that was the McNair Marlins that began the season in the top 10 of the provincial “AAA” boys basketball rankings and gives opponents fits with their relentless defence.

The Marlins were firing on all cylinders Monday night in a dominating 107-73 win over the MacNeill Ravens to take a big step towards locking up a Lower Mainland “AAA” playoff berth.

The visitors jumped out to a 27-18 lead after one quarter and then blitzed the Ravens 30-9 over the next 10 minutes to take a commanding 57-27cushion into halftime. They did it with standout guard Nathan Schroeder saddled on the bench for the entire quarter with foul trouble.

Any thought of a miraculous MacNeill second half comeback was quickly dashed when McNair opened the third with an 11-2 run.

Led by high-energy seniors Talvinder Jagde and

Jovan Dhillon, the Marlins wreaked havoc on nearly every MacNeill possession with their swarming pressure.

“You look at the scoreboard and you’re down by 10. The next time you look up you’re down by 20,” said Ravens head coach Landon Dy. “It’s tough to come back against that and it definitely took the rhythm out of our game. When you break it, you can get off good shots, but it’s hard to sustain it.

“You have to give your props to McNair. They shot that ball well and they stuck with that pressure all game long. That team is good and scary to play against.

They are long and lanky.

They also work so hard.”

What also has to be encouraging for the Marlins is the emergence of secondary scoring.

Schroeder led the way with 20 points, despite sitting half the game, while Jagde and Dhillon combined for 19 in limited minutes. Tejvir Gill (19) and Harris Hamidi (17) had big outings, while Von Rosales

chipped in with 13.

McNair looks to be peaking at the right time, having won the Robert BatemenClassic two weekends ago in Abbotsford, knocking off the No. 3 and No. 5 ranked teams en route to the title.

It was a result that put them at No. 7 in the latest provincial rankings, yet their work

is far from done.

Earlier league losses to Steveston-London and Richmond High put them in must-win mode Monday to extend their season beyond next week’s city playoffs.

They host McMath tonight (7 p.m.) in another game with major post-season implications.

“They had their back against the wall and knew what they had to do tonight,” said Marlins coach Jessy Dhillon. “Usually they are goofing around a bit before the game but today it was only stone cold faces.

It all starts with our defence.

When our press is clicking, we can beat anybody.”

oming in to the 2016-2017 season, Steveston-London Sharks Bantam girls basketball coach Rob Urquhart knew he was blessed with a special team.

Having three medalists from the 2016 BC Summer Games and eight alumni from the successful Richmond Youth Basketball League (RYBL) program, expectations of him and his team were high.

As the regular season is now concluded and the playoffs are set to begin, to say he made the best of the gift he was given would be an understatement.

The Sharks started the season with a 3-0 tournament record to win the MacNeill Ravens Classic in early December. They recently finished the regular season with a perfect 7-0 record, averaging an impressive 41-point margin of victory.

Eclipse Malixi and Maggie Campbell round out the coaching staff.

The team managers are TJ Cadlaon and Jessie Chan.

The Sharks are hosting this week’s Richmond Championships which conclude with the final on Thursday at 5 p.m.

At the buzzer…

Three other city championships are also underway this week.

Unbeaten McMath and host MacNeill are be the teams to beat at the Richmond Bantam Boys Championships. The final also takes place on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Sharks are also enjoying a dominant season at the Juvenile Girls level and are looking to cap a perfect run at Burnett Secondary.

The title game goes Friday at 5 p.m McMath is heavily favoured to earn Juvenile Boys honours at Richmond High. The championship game tipsoff at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Sockeyes peaking as playoffs near

ichmond Sockeyes look to be peaking at the right time as the Pacific Junior Hockey League post-season looms.

The Sockeyes posted a pair of impressive victories last week as they make a late charge for home ice advantage for at least the first round of the playoffs. Jeevan Sidhu had a goal and three assists, while Joshua Barrett made 33 saves for his first shutout of the season as Richmond rolled to a 5-0 road win over the North Vancouver Wolf Pack on Saturday night.

First period goals by Connor Alderson and Austin Cook were more than enough as Richmond cruised to victory. Arjun Badh and

defenceman Devon Vorster each chipped in with a goal and one assist.

Two nights earlier, the Sockeyes produced a dominating 7-1 victory over the Delta Ice Hawks.

They jumped out a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes and broke the game open with three unanswered in the third. The result pulled Richmond (21-11-3-5) within three points of the Ice Hawks (26-12-0-1). The teams were slated to meet again last night in Ladner.

Badh led the locals with four points, including a pair of goals.

Vaughan Bamford, Connor Kavanagh, Lucas Startford, Brendan Marfleet and Vorster had the others. Merek Pipes made 22

saves for the win as the Sockeyes outshot Delta 43-23.

The game marked the return of captain Tyler Andrews who had been sidelined since Nov. 12.

The Sockeyes also host North Vancouver on Thursday (7 p.m.) at Minoru Arena. They enter the week with four regular season games remaining.

Icing…

The club’s annual alumni game on Jan. 21 was once again a big hit, attracting over 600 fans to help raise funds for the Sockeyes Scholarship Foundation. The teams also served up a highlyentertaining battle with the Alumni needing double overtime to trim the current Sockeyes 4-3.

Thrilling win puts Devils back in top spot A

dramatic come-from-behind victory has put the Richmond Devils back on top in the South Coast Women’s Hockey League.

Lindsay DiPietro’s hat trick goal with just 36 seconds remaining lifted the Devils to a 3-2 win over defending provincial champion South Fraser TNT on Saturday night at the Richmond Ice Centre. The result leaves the teams deadlocked for first place, with Richmond (13-2-2) enjoying two games in hand on their rivals (13-4-2).

DiPietro set the stage for her heroics when she scored on the power play with 4:22 left to tie the game at 2-2. South Fraser enjoyed a 2-0 lead after one period. DiPietro launched her team’s comeback

in the early stages of the second. The former Wayne State University standout is now second in league scoring with 23 points in 15 games, including 11 goals.

Marisa Chau and Yvonne Mikulcik each chipped in with a pair of assists. Harmony Sander made 12 saves for the win as Richmond outshot the visitors 33-14.

The result avenged a 4-3 loss to South Fraser back on Dec. 10, the Devils’ first defeat of the season. They began the new year with a 1-0 setback in Kamloops but have since gone unbeaten in five games Richmond returns to action Saturday, Feb. 11 when Trinity Western visits the RIC Forum Rink at 7:15 p.m.
