RCMP hoping to cash in on proliferation of surveillance footage ALANCAMPBELL Staff Reporter

I

n its latest bid to combat serial property crimes, Richmond RCMP has launched a webpage dedicated to suspects they’ve been unable to identify.

“Richmond Help Identify,” as it’s called, is a collection of rotating images of suspects caught on property owners’ surveillance footage.

The vast majority of the images are of serial break-in offenders, thieves and fraudsters, all of whom have been caught on cameras belonging to the property owner

or store in question. A recent rise in the number of people arming themselves with surveillance equipment has led to more images coming into the hands of the police.

But they are not always able to identify the suspect, hence Richmond RCMP’s appeal for members of the public to hop onto the page and have a look at the faces.

“We went live with this (page) near the end of last year,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“We’re getting some success, but we could do with more eyes on these pictures and would like to see even more traffic on the website.

Dog community rallies around cancer fighter Support pouring in for professional dog-walker battling lung cancer Alan Campbell

he dog community in Richmond is rallying around one of their own after she was struck down with lung cancer.

A GoFundMe page, started at the end of last year, and a pub night fundraiser held on Monday night, has pooled more than $8,000 for professional dog-walker Charlotte Stromberg, who has been unable to work since October when she began chemotherapy for lung cancer.

Stromberg’s friend Marlene Clow, who owns and runs Doggie Six grooming in south Richmond, organized the online funding page and the pub night at the Pioneer’s Pub on No. 3 and Williams roads.

Being self-employed, she knows how tough it can be financially for her friend and colleague and wanted to do something to help out Stromberg, who runs Charlotte’s Canine Capers.

“I’d been to a few fundraisers at the Pioneer before and I thought, ‘I can do this for Charlotte,’” said Clow.

“Her clients have been wonderful, we sold 86 tickets for the pub night.”

After people learned that Stromberg was diagnosed with lung cancer, most of them, said Clow, assumed the dog-walker was a heavy smoker.

“She’s never smoked, never lived with anyone that smoked and doesn’t even drink,” added Clow.

Stromberg, 46, told the Richmond News that she’s been overwhelmed by the reaction from the community.

“It has been absolutely amazing; you’re never quite sure who your friends really are until something like this happens,” said Stromberg.

“It makes me feel so special and I was like ‘gosh, people actually like me.’”

Stromberg said she has been feeling better after her treatment but won’t know until March if the chemotherapy has worked.

“I’ve never smoked, not even once, never in my whole life,” she added.

“But I’ve learned that 30 per cent of lung cancer sufferers are non-smokers, and it doesn’t run in my family either.

“I’m a pretty vanilla type of girl.”

Cars went up in smoke R

ichmond Fire Rescue extinguished an “extensive” fire Friday afternoon at an auto wrecker’s scrap yard on Mitchell Island.

In the late morning, large black plumes of smoke billowed from a pile of cars inside the property along the 13000-block of Mitchell Road, east of the Knight Street Bridge.

The smoke spread westward, over Richmond by noon.

Fire department spokesperson Brian MacLeod said seven fire trucks were used to battle the fire, which was contained within the property.

No injuries were reported, said MacLeod.

The cause remains under investigation.

Water restrictions tightened R

esidential water use during droughts is set to become more restrictive pending approval by Metro Vancouver this spring, for the 2018 season.

Late last year the regional government reviewed its water shortage response plan in the wake of a major drought in 2015.

And while there are proposals to further restrict lawn and garden watering, homeowners and strata complex residents with outdoor pools, as well as golf course operators, are among the winners of new, proposed water restrictions The City of Richmond is in support of most of Metro Vancouver’s proposals.

For instance, Richmond supports reduc-

ing water sprinkling from three days a week to two and limiting garden watering to morning hours.

Banning afternoon watering of municipal sports fields is also proposed but Richmond wants to reserve the right to water damaged fields during the day. Commercial car washing, which is currently unrestricted for all four stages of water restrictions, will be restricted in Stage 3 to automated systems that recirculate water.

Richmond also supports allowing, during Stage 3, for pools and hot tubs to be topped up (seen as a “marginal” use of water).

More leeway for golf courses to water during Stage 2 and 3 restrictions is also proposed.

In some cases, added Hwang, “people are reluctant to come forward, so hopefully this will make it easier for them.

“They might very well know this person from getting on a bus or train every day, you never know.

“And property offenders are often tied in with other offences; there are some noto-

rious offenders out there that we’d like to be identified.

“If we could get some help from the public, it could clear up a lot of files. We really don’t want these images to go to waste and cases to go cold.”

Asked about privacy concerns arising from the proliferation of the aforementioned surveillance cameras, Hwang

said the vast majority are pointing at the property owners’ own patios, porches, entrance ways or parkades.

“It’s all been positive from our standpoint.”

even of nine city councillors have directed staff to begin consulting the public, including local farmers, this March with respect to limiting house sizes on protected agricultural land.

But Coun. Carol Day wanted to turf the proposed consultation process and immediately draft a bylaw to limit house sizes on the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) to 7,500-square-feet.

While Day’s choice departed from her usual calls to broaden and expand public consultation, it fell in line with many of her votes that either reject or slow down the pace of development in the city.

Day and Coun. Harold Steves — who also voted against consultation — argued an immediate bylaw, however temporary, would have curbed a potential rush for building permits.

“I don’t think we need an extensive public consultation process. I think we know what we’re going to hear,” said Day. But, the matter is more “complex,” noted Coun. Linda McPhail, at city hall Monday night.

Architects, plannners should find 'opputy' Dear Editor, Re: “‘Curious’ behaviour’ proves hard to define,” News, Jan. 18 Like columnist Sabine Eiche, I have derived great pleasure from reading my copy of The Meaning of Liff by Douglas Adams and John Lloyd. The argument that English could be a more flexible and inventive language is, I feel, a valid one and Douglas and Lloyd have proven that it could also be much more amusing when manipulated in creative ways.

In Sabine’s search for a word to descibe the “certain behavioiur” that has caught her interest may I suggest “opputy” (behaviours and/or efforts where extreme opposites are combined or juxtaposed in ways that create something attractive or beautiful). Now, If more architects, contractors, and cummunity planners could demonstrate more “opputy” in their work, this city might have a much more attractive character than it does.

We need some form of proportionality Dear Editor, Re: “Prop rep feels good but no one wins,” News, Letters, Jan. 18 Ian MacLeod is correct; many forms of proportional representation are ill-suited for our geography, political institutions and culture, but we do need more proportional election results.

Two reasons stand out. First, it would prevent a Trump-like extremist obtaining power. Given today’s uncertain world, that is very important.

Second, thinking of the May provincial election, is it not time to give Richmond residents who do not vote BC Liberal the possibility of some representation?

Since 1972, for two generations, unless Richmond residents voted Socred or Liberal (different name, same party) their vote has been meaningless.

What incentive do those citizens have to vote come May? In fact, in

ur ridings, ridings what incentive do BC our Liberals have to vote? How much longer must that go on? It need not be so.

'Bureaucratic daycare' out of touch Dear Editor, Re: “Renovation planned for ROX,” News, Jan. 13 After 40 years residing in Richmond, we decided to make a wise choice three years ago to move from a city of lack of common sense, overspending, out of control taxation, and a council that has long-term members who consider governance as a playground for warm fuzzies.

at the No. 3 Road political and bureaucratic daycare centre. The latest Oval renovation notification to taxpayers is a typical example of poor planning and overspending.

It is my understanding that Richmond council is not represented on the Oval board of directors, although the city manager is.

Who is responsible for controlling the management of the City of Richmond? Another humorous offer on a front page from the Oval management was an opportunity to obtain “free” passes for some

event.

In the meantime, we are fortunate to have made such a choice as a new home with the same value, a council led by a knowledgeable mayor that listens, equivalent tax base, street lighting, welcoming neighbours, sidewalks and paved residential streets to enjoy.

Richmond residents require a change of governance very soon.

Money and race card trump sustainability Dear Editor, I attended a four-hour council meeting on Monday night, to voice my concerns over the ever-increasing size of homes on our rich and fertile Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR).

I came to the conclusion that few at city hall seem to even know what is going with this issue, or how we have gotten to the situation we are currently in.

I came to the conclusion that most of council knows little to nothing about the ALR. I would have expected they would at least get a one page primer on ALR land in planning meetings. Or, that they would even take a glance at the Agricultural Land Commission website, given that they are going to be voting on something this important.

At the minimum, that they would know that people who purchase ALR land aren’t required to farm it, but that there are tax benefits to farming the land.

Or, perhaps most importantly, staff would direct them to the current bylaw standards in place for ALR land entitled “The Minister’s Bylaw Standards,” which acts as a guide for municipalities Some keys words in the document that should have been highlighted and underlined for mayor and councillors are: “With only 5 per cent of the provincial land

base in the ALR, it is important that further regulation of this land base does not hinder farming, its intended primary use…The criteria are recommended as the minimum level of regulation by a local government.

Local governments can choose to be more restrictive of residential uses in the ALR… The preferred approach is to establish farm residential footprint size commensurate with urban or suburban lot areas. Bearing in mind that the priority use in the ALR is farming, permitted residential development should be no larger than that permitted in zones specifically set aside for residential development.”

Some of the goals of these standards were to address: “Minimizing loss and/or fragmentation of farmland due to residential uses… (and) minimizing the impact of residential uses on increasing costs of farmland.”

I would recommend that city councillors take a peak at this document for further information.

In fact, I realized that I knew more about the ALR than most people in council chambers. I have lived on ALR land (my parents still do), and I have done some research on it. I felt my comments and those of others who held similar concerns were dismissed by both a councillor and by the realtor/farm-

er who was given ample audience at council.

Apparently I am just someone coming to council who knows nothing about the ALR and lives in a ‘luxurious” home in West Richmond and would have no idea about the life of a farmer.

I would love to exchange my “luxurious” home of 1,500-square-feet with any farmer on ALR land. I intensively farm my tiny city lot. I grow hundreds of pounds of food on my city lot annually. I realize that farming even my small piece of land is a big job so I don’t discount the work of true farmers.

But I don’t believe true farmers are the ones wanting to build massive homes.

Many of us were at council chambers to ensure that common sense would prevail, and for ALR regulations to be followed. But it seems money talks in this city. Or the race card.

It seems councillors Carol Day and Harold Steves are the only ones working for a truly sustainable Richmond.

What we have is land up for grabs and a council that is willing to hand it over to the highest bidder, regardless of regulations. It is shameful.

Invest in land, tax it as such Dear Editor, Richmond is far from alone in the need for affordable land for business, commercial, residential or even agricultural development. Rarely does anyone ask why land is so costly and what can be done about it.

The solution has been well-known for centuries; Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine wrote about it. What they understood is that every parcel or tract of land has some potential rental value, based on natural advantages and by the existence of community infrastructure.

This rental value is not created by any

individual and rightfully belongs to the community. The conventional property tax captures just a small portion of this value while imposing heavy taxes on the houses and other buildings we construct. Moving to a land-only property tax base would provide the financial incentive for owners of land to bring the land they hold to its highest, best use (or sell to someone who will). Profit from speculating in land rather than from investing in job-creating activities would disappear.

Todd Stone bowed to port, gave no alternative solutions Dear Editor, Re: “Due diligence done on bridge,” Delta Optimist, Jan. 20.

The Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone makes some statements that need to be addressed.

Although the decision has been made to remove the George Massey Tunnel and build a new 10-lane bridge, I feel the following information should be shared.

On May 25, 1959 the George Massey Tunnel opened for traffic. In the first 41 hours, 135,000 motorists travelled through the tunnel. This exceeded the tunnel’s rated capacity of 7,000 cars per hour by 300 additional cars.

If the statistics from the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure are correct that in 2015, the Annual Average Daily Traffic was 80,666. which would equal some 3,361 vehicle per hour, well below the GMT tunnels capacity of 7,000 cars per hour, why then is there a problem at rush hour?

Could it be that Delta Port is the only major port in North America that does not operate 24/7? The fact is one container or large transport truck could displace up to four cars and at least 13 per cent of the vehicles using the tunnel during rush hour are large trucks.

One has to ask why then has the B.C. Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure not even considered a modern day policy of banning all trucks at rush hour.

My second point refers to the Minister stating that it is a fallacy how anyone could think that they are removing the tunnel so that the Fraser River could be dredged deeper to accommodate deeper ships, and that the province was not part of that project. This could not be further from the truth. One part is true

— that the Ministry would not be doing the dredging, since that is the responsibility of the federal agency, Port Metro Vancouver.

But building a bridge and removing the tunnel would be the port’s preference and so, at the urging of industrial interests of the Pacific Gateway Strategy Plan on the Fraser River, the Ministry chose the bridge.

ichmond’s Aberdeen Centre hosts not only the most popular Chinese New Year celebration in the Lower Mainland, it’s become one of the most widely watched TV events to usher in the new calendar.

According to Joey Kwan, spokesperson for the mall, Fairchild TV’s annual coverage on countdown night, which takes place in the Central Atrium area, is beamed across the country and has significant viewership in major cities, most notably in Toronto.

“It’s a very popular show. It first started about 14 years ago and Richmond gets a lot of attention each time,” said Kwan, who expects roughly 6,000 people to pack the mall on Friday (Jan. 27) where a large stage area is set up and is viewable from the mall’s three levels.

“We are growing bigger and bigger each time,” Kwan said, adding the community celebrating Chinese New Year is getting used to making plans around making the mall the place to go. “Increasingly, it’s become the event that people must see, especially since we are indoors.”

The countdown show starts at 8:30 p.m. and runs until 10 p.m. Then at 10:30 p.m., the crowd will be treated to personal blessings from the God of Fortune, which is usually played by Coun. Bill McNulty.

Also, from 10:30 p.m., live coverage on Fairchild TV of the countdown begins.

The event attracts plenty of national and

international media, as well.

“Even those from the U.S. and Europe, they are quite amazed to see how big the celebration here is,” Kwan said. “One time a German reporter was stunned at the scale of things here. He said it was bigger than the celebrations in some other Chinatowns around the world.”

The event also draws a good number of movers and shakers from the political world.

Two years ago, it was then prime minister Stephen Harper who was a surprise guest who showed up and addressed the crowd. In 2014, current PM Justin Trudeau, who was then just the federal Liberal leader, showed up.

Kwan was remaining tight-lipped last week if there was any possibility of a repeat visit along the same lines.

“No one has really told me. Perhaps, they want to surprise me, too.”

Away from the hoopla, the celebrations serve as a cultural touchstone for both recent arrivals and the younger population that has grown up here.

“It’s our vision to present to the second generation born here how Chinese New Year is celebrated,” Kwan said.

And there’s plenty for them to see. It starts earlier in January with the mall’s Chinese Flower Fair which incorporates a sidewalk sale in the mall that features a steadily rising number of non-Chinese vendors who book space to sell their wares.

“It’s very nice to see different cultures come and celebrate with is and really get into the spirit,” Kwan said.

Once the new year rings in, that’s not the end

of the festivities as there will be plenty of entertainment Saturday (Jan. 28) during the golden dragon and lion dance in the outdoor courtyard starting at 11 a.m.

Then the Chinese New Year Cultural Showcase Celebration begins in the Central Atrium at 2 p.m. with the BC Chinese Music Association. That is followed at 3:30 p.m. by the Vancouver Academy of Dance.

And, on Sunday, the Colors of Dance Academy performs from 1 - 2 p.m. and Vancouver Beauty Dance World performs from 3:30 4:30 p.m.

ichmond actor Colin Foo may not be that adept at “dying” on screen. But he sure knows how to cook up some “killer” garlic and ginger chicken wings to celebrate Chinese New Year, which just so happens to be the Year of the Rooster.

“I’m a rooster, too,” said Foo, a Richmond resident since the 1970s and former high volume realtor, graphic designer, accomplished water colour artist, talented cook and now an actor who recently had his first death scene since he took up a career in front of the cameras in 1995.

It was for a role in the CW network, sci-fi TV series 100.

“I wasn’t sure how I should be taking my last breath, because the story involves me being banished to the surface of the Earth where the air is polluted,” he said with a smile, hinting that he’s more comfortable filling the role of an adept amateur chef in his kitchen — one he had specially built to not only entertain, but hold cooking classes – than being in front of the camera.

Foo said he loves cooking because it allows him to express his artistic side, one that roosters are known to have in abundance.

“Roosters are also busy bodies,” Foo said with a laugh. “They are always in their family’s affairs. And they are very controlling and good at business.

“Most of the time, they have a Midas touch.

And most of the roosters I know are very artistic and very free-spirited. But I think the most distinguished feature for roosters is that we are perfectionists. We like to see all projects come to fruition. We never like to see anything half done.

To help celebrate Chinese New Year in fine, fulsome fashion, Foo said he wanted to share his quick and easy recipe for garlic and

ginger chicken wings, which can be enjoyed any time of the year.

“They are great for parties, football nights and pretty much any time you want them. They are easy to prepare and only take about 10 minutes to cook in a wok, or, if you have more time, about an hour in the oven,” he said.

The ingredients (see the full recipe on this page) are combined with the chicken and then set aside to marinate in the fridge overnight. With a short wok cooking time, they can be done and served fresh for guests.

lthough All That Matters is the sequel to Wayson Choy’s first novel, The Jade Peony, it is actually a parallel story.

Told this time from the point of view of the eldest son of the Chen family, rather than his younger siblings, the Chens have arrived in Vancouver’s Chinatown in the 1930s, during the Great Depression and prior to World War II. The Chen family is sponsored

by Third Uncle, a distant relative who has no immediate kin to share his business with, so he arranges the passage for the Chens; father, grandmother (Poh Poh) and First Son, Kiam-Kim. In this novel, we follow the family’s challenges through the eyes of Kiam-Kim, the First Son, who strives to uphold the honour of the family — a responsibility he takes very seriously.

Kiam-Kim tries very hard to be a good example to his younger siblings as he himself comes of age in a new country, while trying to maintain the old traditions among the new ways.

Poh Poh is representative of the old ways, intriguing the children with her stories and superstitions that she uses to keep the children in line. As Kiam-Kim grows up, he becomes less caught up in these stories, being pulled into the promise that life in Canada holds for him.

Choy gives us a historical inside look into Chinatown as we go with Kiam-Kim and his father on their collection work for Third Uncle. This work introduces us to many of the families and takes us inside the poverty and struggle of many of the residents of Chinatown and the difficulties many families faced.

Choy’s descriptive writing and the first person narrative of Kiam-Kim lends itself to having the reader feel like they are in the middle of the events, right there back in the early days of Gold Mountain.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in local history. I relished reading about the familiar places I often visit today and it was enjoyable to visit with the Chen family again.

Library visitors interested in learning more about Chinese culture and what kind of celebrations take place to mark the arrival of the New Year will enjoy a wide variety of literacy-based programs and events to suit all ages and interests.

The fun kicks off on Saturday, Feb. 4, with a puppet show, arts and crafts and a chance to try Chinese painting or calligraphy.

s a City of Richmond councillor, people are used to seeing Chak Au’s face in public places.

On the third day of the Chinese New Year, however, don’t expect to see too much of Au, the only member of council who can converse fluently in Cantonese and Mandarin.

Sipping on his bubble coffee inside a Chinese restaurant in Richmond Centre, Au explained a tradition peculiar to his native region in southern China.

“On the third day of the Chinese New Year, we are supposed to stay at home, because, tradition tells us that you are more likely to lose your temper on the third day, so it’s best to stay indoors and not socialize,” smiled Au, taking another sip from his giant straw.

“We believe that it’s easier to get out of control on that day.”

As for the rest of his Chinese New Year celebrations and traditions, Au said much of it is “very much like Christmas; it’s a time for family at home in Richmond.

“We have very subtle tradition from southern China where, for Chinese New Year day, every piece of clothing we wear is new; this is to signify a new beginning.

“And instead of a Christmas tree, we have a pot of mandarin trees; it has the kind of golden colour and signifies prosperity and

good luck.

“We also have a special kind of rice cake, made of sticky rice.”

Despite the vast majority of Richmond being of Asian ethnicity, Au is more than aware that demographic isn’t reflected on city council, with only himself, Derek Dang and Alexa Loo being of Asian ethnicity.

“I don’t know how the other two feel, but I’m the only one that can speak the language I guess, so that gives me a bit of an advantage when it comes to communicating with the Chinese community,” said Au.

“So I think I can better understand the needs of the Chinese community and also translate what they’re saying and thinking.

“It is challenging, because there are at least four groups within that (Chinese) community, but all their interpretations and understanding can be very different.

“They do notice (the demographic on council) and generally, they make comments about the representation. But I tell them they have to participate more.”

Au’s urgings, he said, are usually greeted with nods of agreement and “usually, they

have good intentions, but they speak of the barriers first, including language and, historically, they have a lack of participation in civic matters from their lives in China.

“It’s changing slowly, not as quickly as we all want it to be.”

In his time on council, Au has spent many hours and days building so-called “bridges” between the Asian and non-Asian communities, with varying degrees of success.

One more recent bridge, however, has already produced what appears to be a longlasting, cross-culture connection.

“There is this Chinese community awards for women and I’ve encouraged them to open it up to other cultures in the community,” he said.

“So, for the last two years, they’ve recognized people from outside of the Chinese community and it has worked wonders, it has really been embraced. People from across the community then feel involved.

“But this needs to be happening all over the city.”

Au also believes there are more ethnic Chinese businesses joining the Richmond Chamber of Commerce than ever before and that can only be good for all concerned.

“But nothing happens quickly,” cautioned Au. “People are willing to learn and step out of their comfort zones, but it takes time.”

his Saturday marks Chinese New Year as the Year of Rooster begins to crow.

Many of us will be celebrating by going out to a Chinese banquet or trying our wok skills at home. Now is a great time to plan what drinks we will choose to enjoy with the festive dishes.

If you want to be traditional, and the Lunar New Year celebrations are all about tradition, choose a Chinese wine. Surprisingly, China is number six in the world for wine production, after Australia.

Kuhei Hua Chen Chiew ($10.99), Chinese Happy Wine, is a traditional drink to celebrate the Year of the Rooster. It’s an orange coloured blend of white wine and dried Osmanthu flower fortified to 15 per cent alcohol. I loved its rich, sweet apricot and floral aroma and taste.

Serve it chilled to make a sweet wine more refreshing. “If there’s heat, drink sweet,” so spicy Szechwan dishes with chili would be a perfect match. I also enjoyed it with BBQ pork; sweet wines cut the salty flavours that many Chinese dishes have.

Another traditional choice is a rice wine that comes in a fancy ceramic bottle and has over 2,500 years of history: NuErHong (Lucky Girl)

Five-Year-Old ($20.49). It was brewed when a family had a baby girl and it was ready to drink when the girl was engaged.

Lucky Girl looks like a tawny port with its golden brown colour. It also has some of the tawny port nutty aroma and flavour and a savoury consommé character. Serve this dry wine with any dish that h nuts such as cashews or has p peanuts, as well as spareribs a soy braised chicken. and Switching to Western wines, if you are sitting down to hot a sour soup or any seafood and s such as crab in black bean s sauce, I recommend New Z Zealand`s Kono Sauvignon B Blanc ($15.99).

I love Kono’s generous bouquet of peach, passion-fruit and mango.

Its rich flavour has layers of lemon, orange, guava, and mango, all bound together with crisp acidity and a lengthy finish.

Because red is the colour that pervades Chinese New Year and symbolizes happiness and good luck, here is an affordable and highly recommended red wine to uncork.

Jacob’s Creek Shiraz Reserve has a gorgeous dark red colour and it’s brimming with lots of dark fruit bouquet and flavour.

It’s important to consider your main flavour and texture when pairing wine with Chinese food. If the dish is cooked in rich plum or soy based sauce, the Jacob’s Creek Shiraz with its dominant smooth fruit focus is best.

Delicious dumplings bring Dixon ‘wealth’ Chinese parents dish up tasty treats to strengthen school community GRAEMEWOOD Staff Reporter

or a short moment in time, one week ahead of Chinese New Year, Dixon elementary school was converted from a place of learning into a dumpling factory where more than 1,000 tasty, oval-shaped pastries were manufactured by a dedicated group of Chinese-Canadian parents.

Last Friday marked the fourth consecutive year the parents had been invited to celebrate the holiday with the students from teacher Lee Hunter’s class.

“The kids get really excited and they learn about Chinese culture,” said mom Mella Mi, who helped organize the big cook.

In the school’s kitchen, about a dozen moms, and one dad, put together an impressive assembly line of kneading, cutting, filling and folding of dumplings. The parents brought all the necessary ingredients from home. Some of the dumplings were flavoured and coloured purple and green, with beets and spinach. Three varieties of dumplings were made: beef, pork and vegetable.

They are most popular in northern China, which makes parent Sunny Sun, a dumpling expert, having recently moved to Richmond from Dalian, China’s major northern port city.

The parents created an assembly station for six students to come into the kitchen and create their own dumplings.

Two students, who recently immigrated to Canada from the Mediterranean, were particularly interested in making dumplings for the first time.

Grade 4 student Ayash Kamel came to Richmond from Cairo, Egypt, in 2014 and said he hadn’t had real Chinese food yet. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Ayash of the experience.

Grade 3 student Zeena Salim, who came to Richmond this school year from Jordan, was equally impressed with the dumpling celebration. She said her favourite dumpling is the chicken dumpling, and that this was her first time making the bite-sized treat.

It wasn’t all just about the dumplings, although Hunter admits they are the biggest draw.

Hunter also had two other Chinese New Year stations that his students could cycle through during the morning: traditional Chinese calligraphy and Chinese paper art.

Chinese-Canadian parents also helped the students create impressive works of art.

To compliment the dumplings, the students also had Chinese snacks and the aunt of a Chinese international student made Shanghai

noodles.

Hunter said the now annual event is an important way for parents who are new to the school system to become involved in the school community.

“Often, there’s language barriers and some parents don’t want to ask questions; they feel they can’t. This sort of thing makes them feel more comfortable,” said Hunter.

“It’s important for parents to get to know the school community,” he said.

“These wonderful helpers now get very involved and show great interest in student learning,” added Hunter, who wore a traditional Chinese robe, as did principal Bill Juhasz, and many students.

I

f you’ve ever wondered what the inside of a Buddhist temple looks like, or what Chinese New Year really means, all will be revealed this weekend in Richmond.

Dharma Drum Vancouver Center, on No. 5 Road near Blundell Road, will attempt to satisfy both curiosities as it hosts its third, annual public Chinese New Year celebration.

On Saturday and Sunday, Dharma Drum – which practices Chan Buddhism – will open its doors to the community, irrespective of people’s religious persuasion or the lack thereof.

As it marks the Year of the Rooster, the centre has laid on another fun-filled, free event for the people of Richmond, with everything, as usual, being delivered in English.

“There were several hundred people here last year, I’m not sure of the exact number, but it has been very successful in the two years we’ve put it together and it seems to grow in popularity each year,” said the centre’s Paul Hancock.

“I think people are very curious about the temple; not everyone is religious and people can sometimes be intimidated by temples. So this event is perfect for those people and it’s also a lot of fun.

“The medium of communication is English, because the idea is to bring in people who perhaps don’t speak Chinese.”

Hancock said one of the more popular activities over the course of the two-day celebration is the Chan tea.

“A lot of people love it; it’s something that they always remember, it’s perfect for reflecting and relaxing,” he added.

“The purpose of the event is to be inclusive and build friendships across cultures; this is for people who perhaps don’t really understand Chinese New Year but would like to know what it’s all about.”

On Saturday and Sunday, from 1:30-3:30 p.m., Dharma Drum Vancouver Centre will have lots of hands-on activities for adults and kids of all ages, including lantern-making, Chinese calligraphy and the aforementioned Chan tea ceremony.

As well, there will be a lion dance, drumming and live harmonious vocals and music from the centre’s choir and musicians.

Temples offer unique experience O

n New Year’s Day (Saturday, Jan. 28) visitors are welcome to the International Buddhist Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in North America, to pay respects and pray for good fortune.

Modeled after the Forbidden City in Beijing, the International Buddhist Temple is a sight to be seen, especially on Chinese New Year. It is said that those who pray at temples will be blessed for the coming year.

Other Buddhist temples in Richmond where you can pray for good fortune include the Ling Yen Mountain Temple and Thrangu Monastery, the first traditional Tibetan monastery in Canada.

Visitors of all faiths and religions are welcome to attend the festivities and join prayer and meditation services.

rlene Kroeker is a creative writer and lifelong Richmond resident who quips she may be “becoming Chinese.”

This, only after the 57-year-old rooster discovered Bodhi Meditation Centre on Alderbridge Way as a means of healing a sore hip some years ago.

“As I’ve been here I’ve been getting more immersed in the Chinese culture and learning more,” explained Kroeker.

Bodhi is a registered charitable organization in Canada and a burgeoning Buddhistbased healing movement across the globe, as centres continue to pop up in new countries, after the first one was founded in China by Master JinBodhi. Richmond’s centre is largely volunteer run and is open to the entire community, regardless of spiritual and religious background.

“Bodhi became my foundation. Life is still swirling around, life is still happening but I’ve got this foundation to stand on and I’ve learned through the meditation there is no good or bad, everything is just what it is. I keep meditating because I like that place of centredness,” said Kroeker, who simultaneously maintains her Christian roots and values.

On Friday, Bodhi members will open their doors to the public for a free feast and celebration throughout the evening to celebrate

Chinese New Year.

“When it comes to Chinese New Year, it’s another opportunity to just celebrate and express my gratitude to Master Jin Bodhi and all the volunteers,” said Kroeker, who also teaches classes at Bodhi, which are free for any member after registering for a $30 fee.

A vegetarian feast will be served in the main hall Friday night (6:30 p.m.), followed by a blessing ceremony (10:30 p.m.) for Buddha, preceded by a dragon dance, lion dance and musical performances.

There will be “East meets West” Bollywood dancing and line dancing, to boot.

Bodhi spokesperson Hanson Ng said it’s the inclusive and diverse nature of the centre that makes it special.

“We see ourselves as serving the community, regardless of what background you’re from. We invite everyone to celebrate with us,” said Ng. The centre will host a number of events over the weekend, as well.

Each afternoon, Bodhi will host a zen tea house as well as Energy Bagua meditation classes. On Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. there will be incense and candle offerings, for one’s New Year wishes.

Bodhi serves to offer people an alternative or complimentary means of healing the mind and body, noted Ng. As of 2015, there were 20,000 Bodhi members in Vancouver alone, making it one of the largest charitable organizations in Metro Vancouver, according to the organization.

s you pass by Brighouse library and Richmond Centre mall, you can often spot groups of Chinese people doing various forms of exercises. Some may wonder what they’re doing and why here?

In Western cultures, people go to gyms to workout. They do in China also — at least the younger ones do.

As in Richmond, there are all kinds of gyms, yoga studios and dance classes throughout China. But for older adults, working out is about more than staying fit; it’s also about having fun, socializing and gathering in a public sphere. These activities are also a form of public entertainment, Public square dancing is one of the most popular activities among middle-aged and older Chinese, often organized by groups of women from their 40s into their 80s.

fect their moves. It is similar to western square dancing, but the music can be virtually anything you enjoy.

Kicking the shuttlecocks is also popular in China.

All ages participate in this fairly highly-skilled and fastpaced activity that requires dexterity, energy and a lot of teamwork. The shuttlecock is a feathered object that has some weight to it and the object is to make it fly between participants gathered in a circle, keeping it aloft.

Even calligraphy is a kind of public performance. In China, calligraphers often gather in parks and squares to practice using huge writing brushes — about onemeter long, dipping them into water and writing on a

hard surface on the ground.

People gather around and share skills, make friends, as well as exercise.

With Richmond’s large Chinese population, it’s not surprising we see a number of activities here.

Public square dancing sessions are held at Richmond Centre, Monday to Friday, before the mall opens. Tai Chi sessions are held in the plaza in front of Brighouse library, and dancing, Tai Chi, badminton, and karaoke are all available through the Richmond Chinese Community Society.

All participants are welcome to join in these activities. Doing so will allow you to learn about the activities of another culture and stay fit.

Mayor’s Annual Address looks to city’s evolution

ichmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie will deliver his Annual Address on Thursday, Jan.26 at a luncheon hosted by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

Titled Richmond: An Evolving City, the Mayor’s Annual Address will highlight Richmond’s milestone celebrations of Canada’s 150th anniversary, reXect on key changes that have contributed to the city’s evolution and look forward to further changes on the horizon.

“The celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary reminds of us of our past and why we have placed great importance of preserving and celebrating our

heritage,” said Brodie.

“However, Richmond City Council is also working very hard to assure current and future success.

“We are constantly seeking opportunities to enhance our delivery of services to our residents and businesses.”

The mayor will be joined by other city councillors, who will each host a table of luncheon attendees.

“Hosting Mayor Brodie’s Annual Address is always a pleasure for our chamber,” said Rob Akimow, chair of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

“Now in its fourth consecutive year, the mayor’s address is an excellent opportunity for

business leaders to learn city hall’s priorities for the coming year and explore collaborative opportunities to work for the betterment of local businesses and all Richmondites.”

The Mayor’s Annual Address will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel (7551 Westminster Highway).

ason Scott spun around and looked across the crowded bar. People were cheering.

“I thought the Canucks had scored a goal,” he said, referring to the muted TV screens dotted on the walls of the local pub.

But the cheering wasn’t for the hockey team. It was for Scott, who had ventured up on the pub’s small stage, at his sister’s urging, to try his hand at karaoke, singing the Neil Diamond classic Love on the Rocks.

“People were really liking what I was doing and had got up on their feet and started cheering,” he said. That’s when the lightbulb went off.

And in the two decades or so since, Scott has fashioned a career to become a tribute artist, performing a host of Diamond’s tunes across the country. And he brings his one-man show, Diamond Forever, to the Royal Canadian Legion on Bridgeport Road on Jan. 28.

late 1980s, and was the front man in a number of rock bands before the chance performance took place at the bar.

Making the switch from rock and roll front man, singing in a high register, to Diamond’s trademark, rumbling low register was easy, Scott said.

He estimated there are about 80 performers like him who cover Diamond — a relatively small number compared to the legion of Elvis Presley singers out there — and believes the popularity comes from an audience’s willingness to temporarily suspend their belief and celebrate their favourite artist.

“Even though my show is

a tribute, I don’t consider it to be an impersonation, but rather a celebration of the music and the history of Neil Diamond,” Scott said.

Diamond’s staying power in the music industry has also helped fuel Scott’s career.

“I think he’s sold about 140 million albums worldwide over the last 50 years.”

Scott said his current favourite song is a new one called Nothing but a Heartache, which is about how Diamond and his fourth wife — his long-time manager — got together.

Diamond Forever plays one night only on Jan. 28. Tickets are $25 and include a gala spaghetti dinner. Details at 604-278-6423.

Acting students get set for Fawlty performance Alan Campbell

I

t’s arguably one of the UK’s most famous TV exports and two Richmond acting students are preparing to add some fresh ingredients to their much-loved characters.

Billed as the “best-written comedy ever to leave Britain” and a “mad-cap farce,” Fawlty Towers will be relived and, to a certain extent, re-invented by renowned Vancouver actor/director Bob Fraser in the Capilano University production next month.

Hugh Boyd secondary grad Madison Long, 25, will play the role of Sybil, hotel owner Basil Fawlty’s long-suffering wife, while McMath grad Jennifer Tong, 21, will play Miss Gatsby, one of a pair of elderly resident guests of Fawlty Towers.

Neither Long nor Tong — who are in their second and third years respectively of the university’s three-year Acting for Stage and Screen diploma — had ever watched an episode of the legendary sitcom, with the latter having never heard of it before.

“I hadn’t really seen much of it; my uncle was a big fan though,” said Long, who didn’t think she auditioned that well for the Sybil role.

“British comedies are hard for me to get into; I wasn’t really sure why people found it so funny.

“But once I started learning who the characters were and what they were about, and once you realize what makes Basil Fawlty tick, then I started to get it.

“I did a lot of research on the history of the show and watched interviews with actor

“What I do is never going to be identical, I will bring something different for sure. I want to be a great contrast to Basil, I want to bring out her groundedness and her wild kind of humour.”

Although Tong had never even heard of the show, she said she got the humour right off the bat.

“Everyone else (on the cast) had heard of it and were really excited about it, so I kind of got off on that excitement,” said Tong.

“I looked it up online and thought it was very humorous. It was very old, but everything was still so funny; I got it straight away, I found myself laughing out loud all the time.

“But I’m trying not to watch the episodes we’re putting on, as I don’t want to do an imitation; I want the show to be our own.

“I want to bring a little crazy (to Miss Gatsby), perhaps a nymphomaniac side to her; I think that will be fun.”

Two episodes of Fawlty Towers — A Touch of Class and The Psychiatrist — by Exit 22 Productions at the university, is showing at the Blueshore Centre for the Performing Arts in North Vancouver from Feb. 8 to 11 at 7:30 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on the 11th.

The show will feature a “gender-equal casting” with “subtle references snuck in for the keen-eyed Fawlty fan.”

rian Meier at last feels like he is at home and the boys basketball program at Cambie Secondary couldn’t be happier.

For the first time in his 10-year teaching career in the Richmond School District, Meier has a continuing contract at one school. That comes after an outstanding decade of coaching in the city, including earlier stops at RC Palmer and McRoberts.

His resumé features plenty of experience guiding provincial teams too.

Now, he is Cambie’s athletic director and pouring his passion for hoops into the North Richmond school.

“I’m just thrilled,” smiled Meier. “ I love what this facility and school has to offer. We also have a lot of young athletic people who crave someone to teach them. I’m very fortunate to have some coaching friends who share the same ideology and passion and want to work together.

“We have a vision from Grade 8 to 12. I’m very excited because we are very new into developing this and we are already seeing success. I can’t wait moving forward to see the potential we have

here.”

The Crusaders’ senior boys team has all the ingredients to reach the provincial “AA” tournament for the third straight year. The junior boys are currently unbeaten in city play, while the Grade 9s sit in second place and the Grade 8s are in the middle of the pack.

Meier has taken on a senior squad that enjoyed a solid run under former coach Chris Mattu and has three key returning starters — Kevin Dhillon, Kyle Kondola and Zak Hassen. The team started off slowly as Meier implemented his own systems, philosophy and even different roles for some of his players. Now, the Crusaders are beginning to hit their stride as the playoffs loom.

They finished second at their own Cambie Classic last weekend, falling 72-65 to GP Vanier in the final. The “AAAA” tier Courtney school raced out to a 22-7 lead after one quarter and twice held off Crusader rallies to claim the title.

Cambie roared back from a 20-point first quarter deficit to defeat Langley’s RE Mountain in its opening game, then got past Cambie 85-66 in the semi-finals.

League play continued Monday with a 93-82 loss to the McNair Marlins that, again, saw the Crusaders rally to make things interesting. The

Marlins were coming off a big tournament win in Abbotsford that will put them in the top 10 of the provincial AAA rankings when they are released Thursday. The loss dropped Cambie’s league record to 4-2.

“When you come on a senior team coaching for the first time when they are older, it takes some time to learn. We are getting there,” continued Meier. “It’s very different to what they have done in previous years. It’s learning what we expect from each other and just learning the language of basketball of what I say compared to what they know.”

A win earlier this season over RC Palmer, in a battle of honourable mention teams, has already secured the Crusaders the No. 1 Richmond seed for the Lower Mainland “AA” playoffs. However, the road back to provincials provides plenty of obstacles with No. 3 King George, No. 8 St. Pat’s, Britannia (HM) and Palmer all in the hunt for just likely two B.C. berths.

“It’s why you play the game,” added Meier.

“That’s what you want. You want to have to learn things. I tell these guys there are so many life lessons, especially for some of the kids we have. It’s about becoming the best person and learning how to achieve success. Understanding that nothing is truly worthy is not easy to do.”

he McNair Marlins made a major statement in Abbotsford on the weekend, capturing the Robert Bateman Timberwolves Classic.

The 16-team tournament featured a number of the top “AAA” ranked senior boys basketball teams in the province, including No. 3 Rick Hansen, No. 4 Steveston-London, No. 5 Lord Byng. No. 8 Byrne Creek and three honourable mentions — Bodwell, Bateman and Caledonia. The Marlins recently dropped out of the provincial rankings due to their inconsistent play but showed exactly what they are capable of, led by their three returning starters.

ichmond Minor Bantam C1s rode the sizzling goaltending of Brandon Fernandez to capture their division at the Seattle Junior Hockey Association’s Arctic Blast Tournament, held over the Martin Luther King Day Weekend in Lynnwood, WA. Richmond rolled to a perfect record over the weekend to earn top honours. Fernandez didn’t not allow a single goal in his starts.

The boys not only thrived on the ice but showed their composure off of it as well.

a stabbing incident resulted in immediate evacuation of the entire mall.

“I thought the boys played great. But even more importantly, they treated each other with respect and kindness,” said Richmond coach Sean Harrington. “It was great that after the mall incident, the boys waited outside for the team to return to the rink. It showed that they really care about one another, one of the best things about playing on a team.

They are good kids.

“I also thought the boys who were at the mall during the incident handle themselves in such a mature way.”

July 14, 1926 - January 17, 2017 A long time Richmond resident, Mom (90), passed away peacefully at Peace Arch Memorial Hospital with family at her side. She was predeceased by her husband James (Jim) in 1999, infant daughter Mary, son Bob (Kim) and grandson Johnny. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Pat (Rena), Tom (Kathy), Tim (Barb-deceased) (Sally), Sharon (Darrell-deceased), Jimmy, Murray (Cindy), Reenie, Mike (Cathy), Jenny (Jim), Gerry (John), Randy, Paul (Valerie), as well as 20 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Mom was a concert pianist, graduating from The Royal Conservatory of Music. Her favourite piece was “Malaguena-Lecuona”, which she played to perfection. Mom was an avid gardener, and her dazzling display of flowers brightened up the whole neighbourhood.

What Mom enjoyed most of all were the many family gatherings. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at the hospital for the loving care they showed Mom. A Celebration of Life Service was held at the Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre, 14831 28th Avenue, Surrey, on Monday January 23, at 11:00 am.

I

n its latest bid to combat serial property crimes, Richmond RCMP has launched a webpage dedicated to suspects they’ve been unable to identify.

“Richmond Help Identify,” as it’s called, is a collection of rotating images of suspects caught on property owners’ surveillance footage.

The vast majority of the images are of serial break-in offenders, thieves and fraudsters, all of whom have been caught on cameras belonging to the property owner

or store in question. A recent rise in the number of people arming themselves with surveillance equipment has led to more images coming into the hands of the police.

But they are not always able to identify the suspect, hence Richmond RCMP’s appeal for members of the public to hop onto the page and have a look at the faces.

“We went live with this (page) near the end of last year,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“We’re getting some success, but we could do with more eyes on these pictures and would like to see even more traffic on the website.
