'Dad, I don't like this:' Evan Dunfee Olympic race-walker told father of discomfort at being awarded bronze Alan Campbell & Mark Booth

xhausted and barely able to stand, a stunned Evan Dunfee emerged from the medical tent to cheers and celebrations among the Canadian camp — 45 minutes after he’d collapsed over the finishing line in fourth place of the grueling 50K race walk at the Olympics in Rio. Moments earlier, while receiving treatment and being rehydrated, the 25-yearold Richmondite had learned the race referee had promoted him to the bronze medal spot due to contact with Japanese rival Hirooki Arai about one kilometre from the finish.

Despite the celebratory mood now engulfing Dunfee, one of the first words he said was spoken very softy to his awaiting father, Don. “Dad, I don’t like this.”

Dunfee senior said his son knew there was something “not right” about the decision to promote the Richmond Olympian into what would have been an incredible podium finish for an athlete who can count on one hand how many times he’s competed at the endurance distance.

Less than two hours later, Dunfee junior’s gut reaction to being given the bronze medal by the referee proved to be somewhat prophetic, after an appeal of the referee’s decision by the Japanese walker’s team was upheld.

The medal was gone, before Dunfee even had a chance to see his reflection in it, let alone hang it around his neck.

What was to follow, however, was praise from some of the highest quarters of the sport, fellow Canadian Olympians and around the world after Dunfee graciously refused the opportunity to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (COS).

“I was kind of surprised (by the reaction),” Don Dunfee told the Richmond News from his east Richmond home on Monday, after flying back in from Rio the previous day.

“Evan didn’t really do anything, other than the right thing. It doesn’t say much for sport that doing the right thing receives so much accolade.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m very proud of my son; he did it the right way, but I wouldn’t have expected anything else from him.”

In a Q and A with the News from Rio on Saturday night (see page 4), Evan Dunfee said that, after collecting his thoughts, eating some food and then watching a video of the race, he knew straight away he’d made the right decision not to appeal.

And, content he had made the right call, Evan Dunfee was happy enough with the fact he had shattered the Canadian national record by more than two minutes with a time of 3:41.38.

he day after his tumultuous post-race experience at the Olympic Games in Rio — where he was given the bronze medal after being bumped by a Japanese rival and then had it taken away again — Richmond race-walker Evan Dunfee took a breath for a Q & A with the News while still in Brazil: Q: Given that you have trained and prepared for years for that moment in Rio, what was going through your mind when you were leading deep into the race?

A: There were points in that race where I was just happy to be there, and the fact that I was in the lead was a huge surprise. But I quickly had to talk myself out of that and remind myself of all the work I did to get here and that I belong at the front of this race, pushing the pace with some of the best guys our event has ever seen!

Q: And what was in your mind when Hirooki Arai brushed past you and you seemed to lose everything, momentarily?

A: When Arai came back past me again and we got tangled up, I mentally lost focus.

I had been so internally focused on myself and my technique and fighting for every step.

But when we tussled, I allowed that to bring my focus to an external point, thinking about what had happened, allowing myself to think that Arai might beat me, and as soon as I did that my legs buckled and began to cramp.

The last 800m were pretty tough.

Q: You seemed to regain your composure after that moment, how did you manage that?

A: Step by step. I knew after that third place was going to be out of reach, but my event is technical and I still had to get to the finish line with proper technique and with my legs seizing up, that was very hard to do. I just tried to focus on making sure every step was good.

The last 100m I don’t remember much. I saw the finish line and I remember getting closer to it, but I don’t actually remember getting there.

Q: You collapsed after the line? Has that happened to you before?

A: It is fairly common in 50km races and you saw it with a lot of people. It is just such a gruelling event and I really gave it every ounce that I had!

Q: Did you have any input in the original decision to appeal your fourth place?

A: So, there never was an original appeal.

Canada asked for a review of the tape and the head track referee decided then that an infraction had taken place and disqualified Arai. Then, the Japanese appealed and it was accepted and the decision was overturned.

I had no say in any of this and rightfully so.

After the race, I wasn’t the most coherent and was struggling pretty badly with dehydration.

Q: Given the tumultuous events after the race, how did you handle all of what was going on around you?

A: Immediately after, I was just trying to process things as best I could. I was not in the best state of mind to make sound decisions, so I just tried to go along with what was happening. Once I got back to the village and got some food in me, I was able to think a bit clearer and once I saw the video I knew that I didn’t what to appeal any further!

Q: Away from the race, when you woke up on Saturday, the day after the race, what was the first thing that came to mind? And how did you feel, mentally and physically?

A: I got out of bed, thought I felt pretty good, took my first step and then fell back onto my bed! The day got better though and I was actually able to strap on some goalie pads for a bit of street hockey. Mentally, I felt great, knew it was the right decision.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to personally thank in helping you get this far?

A: I have had amazing coaches in sport throughout my entire life. Starting with my dad and others in baseball, to Ken Johns as my first track coach, to a whole bunch of guys named Peter, who coached me in track and hockey over the years! And then Gerry Dragomir as my race walk coach; I’ve been with him since I was 11 and he has definitely helped shape me as a person. Obviously, my parents as well, they’ve taught me to always speak my mind and to be honest with myself and I can’t thank them enough for that.

Q: I assume your eyes will now be fixed on the next Olympics?

A: Yes, standing on top of the podium in 2020 is the goal!

Q: Finally, when will you be back in Richmond and what are your plans for the rest of the summer?

A: I am off to Maui this week for a family vacation and then back to Richmond to try to settle down, maybe move out of my parents’ house. I’m excited to get back coaching with the Richmond Kajaks and see all the little rascals who gave me so much strength over the year with their unconditional support!

Market cools but realtors differ on trend PHILIPRAPHAEL

Sales of detached homes in Richmond down 55 per cent

S

ales of detached homes for August are predicted to be down by as much as 55 per cent compared to the same time last year, thanks, in part, to the new foreign home buyers tax, according to Steveston realtor Sean Lawson.

In fact, Lawson argues the tax, which tacks on another 15 per cent to the purchase price for non-residents, means Richmond has likely reached its high watermark for real estate prices, and the August slump may extend into the fall.

“The market was already slowing and they (government) dropped this bomb on it without any real consultation with the industry,” he said, adding it has dour consequences for the overall economy. “To kick out two of the pillars – construction and real estate – that along with tourism were doing well was ridiculous and foolhardy. It was a purely political move that is likely to backfire on the government.”

The B.C. government brought in the tax Aug. 1 in an attempt to address soaring housing prices that pushed local buyers out of the market.

Vancouver realtor Steve Saretsky said he has been watching market trends closely since the foreign buyers tax was implemented and said it is impossible to know for sure how much the tax has slowed sales in the Richmond area where government tracking of real estate transactions showed about

19 per cent of homes were purchased by non-residents — the highest concentration in Metro Vancouver.

“The implementation of the tax put an immediate halt on peoples’ plans,” Saretsky said via email. “Everyone wants to see what’s going to happen next before making any decisions. It changed the mentality of locals from a ‘fear of missing out’ to maybe I should wait.’”

And that is reflected in the sales figures so far this month.

Citing MLS (Multiple Listing Service) data, Saretsky said sales of detached homes in Richmond have dropped dramatically in the first couple of weeks of August. During that time, just 12 properties were sold.

“A few more should trickle in, but I wouldn’t expect that number to be over 20,” he said, “which means, if it continues, August would have roughly 40 sales. There were 89 total sales in August 2015.”

Add that possible slowdown to the drop off in July, when 125 detached homes were sold, compared to 217 during the same time in 2015, and there is a reason to speculate on a further downward slide.

“Here’s what I see, things are clearly trending downwards,” Saretsky said. “After basically hitting a 40 per cent increase in price at one point how much further can we really expect it to go up? Real estate is cyclical. I don’t want to make any predictions, but if you look at all the data and the trends

over the last four months, it’s certainly not encouraging. I would expect things to continue cooling, however September is generally an active month.

“If September is another slow month, then the writing is on the wall,” he added.

n Real estate will rebound

Not subscribing to the doom and gloom prospect is Richmond realtor Austin Kay who has worked locally in the industry for 22 years and has seen it endure and adjust to other external forces.

“I don’t know if it (market) will come back as strong as before, but we’ve been through situations like the U.S. financial crisis back in 2008. Then, our local markets took a break of about three months to see how it would impact us,” Kay said, adding that particular bump in the road, plus concerns about the HST, which was introduced in B.C. back in 2010, did not have much of an effect. “Till now, things have been pretty strong for us in the Lower Mainland.

“We’re near the end of summer and things traditionally cool off at this time of year anyway,” he said. “This 15 per cent

tax just made things a little bit cooler.”

One reason for optimism is the region’s continued status as a desirable place to call home.

“We are one of the top 10 places in the world to live and as of recently, the last few years, we’ve been getting close to being on par with other places in the world that are very popular,” Kay said.

Kay said it is too early to make any dire predictions.

“We’re in a period of transition right now where, because of the 15 per cent tax being retroactive, we’ve got deals that are supposed to come down the pipeline. Some of them may not happen. Some will.”

Plus, the relatively narrow focus of the foreign buyers tax will likely not end up having a long-term effect, he added.

“Certain categories of homes will experience more of an impact. But overall, a majority of the transactions will happen with people who are residents,” he said. “At the end of the day people have to buy and sell for one reason or another, so things will move along again.”

“I’m old enough to remember the tolling on the Deas Tunnel, the Lions Gate Bridge and we all survived,” he said.

“The good thing about this is you won’t have people idling in vehicles for hours on end. Access will be improved, and the noise will be less because it will be elevated, so it’s all plusses.”

MLA Vicki Huntington was also on hand, speaking with staff and talking with residents. She said it is vitally important the public is involved.

“This is one of the biggest projects since the South Fraser Perimeter Road and Terminal Two. It goes hand-in-hand with those two huge projects and it impacts the community enormously and people have to understand what that impact is and whether it will help or hinder the problem we’ve got with congestion,” Huntington said. “I see my job now, given the decision to proceed with a bridge appears to be made by the province, is to make sure what they promised Delta we get, that the impacts of construction are minimal, that it services the people of Delta properly and well and that the community is better in the long run for it rather than without it.”

The next open house is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the Sandman Signature Hotel in Richmond with a third open house on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at the Delta Town & Country Inn. All sessions run from 2 to 8 p.m.

Clark putting children's futures at risk Dear Editor, We can predict and control a great deal of what will happen in the future because we are designing that future today.

The policies we are now putting in place relating to issues such as the environment, climate change, economic policies, job creation, and education will determine the kind of world our children and grandchildren will inherit from us and the character and quality of the life they will experience within it.

This is why, with every successive re-election of Christy Clark’s government, my anxiety about the educational and environmental policies she is putting in place grows exponentially.

I have never been inclined to adopt or affiliate myself with any particular political ideology, preferring instead to assess and agree or not agree with selective policies regardless of which political party is promoting them.

It therefore stands to reason that, as a father, grandfather and teacher, who spent 30 years trying to help students learn how to learn, I am keenly aware of the fact that, in regards to both providing our public school children with the support and quality of education that they need to properly prepare themselves for life in a rapidly changing and increasingly challenged world, and in doing the best we can to ensure that the environment they will live in will be healthy enough to help them overcome the economic and social challenges that will be precipitated by ongoing climate change, Christy Clark’s government is totally failing our children in both ways.

By continuing to cut back funding for public education and closing schools while giving substantial support to the private school industry, and by willfully dismantling her predecessor Gordon Canpbell’s progressive and widely respected climate policies and replacing them with a new “plan” that is essentally toothless, politically safe, and self-serving, Clark has once again provided evidence that the long-term welfare of our children and the health of our ecosystem — two of the most important factors in determining what their lives will be like in the future — take a back seat to her concerns about being re-elected.

Professor Mark Jaccard, of the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University, categorizes Clark’s new climate policies as a “new height in political cynicism” (Globe & Mail - Aug. 22).

As someone concerned about my grandchildren’s future, as well as those of the hundreds of students I worked with over the years, I would go further and call her education and climate policies crimes against our children’s futures.

In the next election, we should think about whether we want to let that continue.

Hope Olympic trip was worth it Dear Editor, I really enjoyed watching the Olympics in Rio on TV; I think Canada did very well.

I am now looking forward to the report from the folks that went to Rio representing Richmond City Hall and the Oval.

There will no longer be a need for security, so they will want to report on their accomplishments.

I would like to know, who went, with whom did they meet, and what kind of agreements were made?

I loathe to use the word “boondoggle” and I

would hate to think that these people spent our tax money without pre-arranged meetings and without a positive agenda for the trip.

If one is spending the taxpayer’s money, it must clearly benefit the community.

The job of elected officials and senior city staff is one of responsibility and accountability; it is not just a cool travel club.

That is why I await the report with great anticipation; I want to see what we have gained from the money they spent on our behalf.

Dear Editor, Re: “Bog meets farm in unique design,” Front Feature, Aug. 12.

Your story regarding Richmond’s Garden City Lands is a good news story (great news, in fact) and a fascinating read.

It’s too bad that the caption on one of the pictures identifies sphagnum moss, while the plant being assessed appears to be heather (Calluna vulgaris), a locally invasive species on the Garden City Lands.

This is a not only a disservice to Sharon

MacGougan, the environmentalist pictured (who I’m certain knows the difference), but to the public, who would presumably benefit from recognizing the difference between an aggressive invasive weed and a beneficial native plant.

Look out for us cyclists Open letter to all Richmond drivers, Since I was rear-ended by someone speaking on their cell phone, I have been using my bike as a way to get in shape and as my primary mode of transportation to commute to work and run errands.

However, every time I am out there, I am risking my life!

Please, please, please, when you are on streets such as Granville Avenue, which have designated bike lanes, and even those that do not, do not assume it is clear to turn left just because you do not see a car.

Stop assuming that because the car in front of you turned left, it is

okay for you to also turn.

Three people have done this to me. Check that bike lane; three times in two days I was almost hit because you were not looking.

I have reflectors. I have lights, on both the back and front of my bike, that flash to alert other vehicles to my presence on the street.

I even use them during the day. My clothing is not dark. I have a bell that I will ring when I am coming up to a vehicle that is looking to cross into the intersection and has its window open, to be certain the driver knows I am there.

I have to stop at green lights when

a car is turning left to be sure they are looking and are not going to hit me.

I would love to ride on the sidewalks. It would be safer, but it is illegal.

Drivers, you are not looking for us.

Look for me. Look for us.

If you actually hit me or one of the other cyclists I see out biking all the time, we could end up seriously injured or even dead.

Please, take a moment and look.

You could save a life, including this Richmond driver turned cyclist.

Birth tourists abusing us Dear Editor, Canada is a very inclusive, welcoming, compassionate and generous country.

Unfortunately, quite often, this nation’s generosity is misused and even abused.

Take the case of birth tourism which has been in the media headlines lately.

As the Richmond News and many other media outlets have reported, birth tourism at Richmond Hospital has increased many times over the last few years.

In one case, a local Richmond mother had to go all the way to Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver to give birth to her baby.

There may be a lot more mothers like her who couldn’t deliver their babies in their own local community hospital. This is not acceptable.

It has been reported that pregnant women from some other countries come to Canada to give birth to their babies and then return to their country/countries as fast as they can.

The baby born here becomes a Canadian citizen who is entitled to all of the benefits of being a Canadian citizen.

Certainly, we should welcome law abiding people from abroad who want to make Canada their permanent home and contribute.

Birth tourism doesn’t seem to fit that category.

It is about time for the federal government to take appropriate measures to stop such an abuse of our hospitality and generosity.

Dear Editor, When our premier, Christy Clark, was first elected, almost immediately she traveled to Asia to seek foreign investment.

A good decision and really only what every other previous premier had done. It was also politically popular because it showed foreign investment boosted the economy and jobs.

In 1988, my government tackled the archaic Land Titles Fee program; it was also viewed as a means of diverting some of the tax burden from the middle income earner to property by using much of the proceeds to lowering the PST. It was much maligned by the opposition, both NDP and Liberal. At the introduction of a Bill to establish the “Property Transfer Tax,” we also reduced the sales tax by 15 per cent, with the promise to lower it further after we knew better what revenues were produced.

It was always my view that the middle and lower income earners, in relative terms, paid the most tax.

In the next election, the NDP was elected government, they suddenly embraced the Property Transfer Tax, but now also increased the sales tax.

The following election saw the government changed again, now to the Liberals. They now loved the revenue from the transfer tax, but again increased the sales tax even further. For a variety of reasons, none the least of which was “quantitative easing,” the printing of money with nothing to back it, offshore investors, especially those from Asia, sought to buy property, especially on the west coast in B.C. Dollars poured in, property values increased dramatically, building boomed, more jobs than people, B.C. now again led Canada economically.

A problem developed. Too many young people loved the “night-life” and wanted to live in Downtown Vancouver but found themselves unable to compete with what Asians were able and willing to pay.

Despite pressure from the NDP opposition, the Liberals wisely resisted and some argued that starting in the Fraser Valley, or elsewhere in B.C., until able to afford the higher city prices, was not a bad place to begin.

The pressure continued and increased, an election was nearing, the Liberals caved and introduced an unprecedented and very hefty “Foreign Buyers Tax” of 15 per cent on the value of the property.

It has now been a month; home sales in Metro Vancouver have plunged, soon construction jobs will begin to suffer and our reputation of being a friendly place to invest may be shattered and could well become a lasting legacy.

The young B.C. voters still can’t afford a Metro Vancouver home and with all the present rules, regulations and delays it is not likely to change.

I can recommend the real long term solution: In the early ‘80s, as the Minister for Municipal Affairs & Transit, I introduced the “Planning Act.” It made its way right to the legislature where, as expected, the NDP opposition, regional districts and some municipal bureaucrats, and even some special interests, like big developers, mounted their protests.

Their main complaint was the requirement for municipalities and regional districts to develop a five-year plan that clearly delineated lands available for development.

The plans were subject to provincial approval and possible amendments. An application from a person or developer had to be dealt with in 60 days.

If approval or disapproval was not granted within 60 days, the application was automatically approved and subject only to an appeal to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs.

It was considered by the ministry that a person wanting to build or buy a home, would save many dollars and time and that it would quickly respond to a housing shortage.

The protests by special interests grew and Premier Bennett and my cabinet colleagues decided to pull the Bill; old timers may recall me calling them “gutless.”

Reintroducing the Bill, or one similar, instead of cutting foreign investment and jobs, is the best solution.

Keep in mind, the time will come when another premier, another time, will travel to Asia to entice foreign investment and find the welcome mat gone.

Keep in mind, the hefty 15 per cent tax may appear to be popular for a time, but the time will fade quickly. Interfering with the “free market” tends to backfire very quickly.

Richmond realtor sues New Coast for $240,000 Alan Campbell

Richmond realtor is suing her former employer for alleged unpaid commissions of more than $240,000.

Morning Yu filed the claim against Richmond-based New Coast Realty — which has an office at 7100 River Road, as well as four others across Metro Vancouver — last week at the BC Supreme Court.

In the claim, Yu states that Pan Pacific Platinum Real Estate Services Inc., doing

business as New Coast Realty, owes her $240,346.74 for commissions on listings and pre-sales she had entered into when working for the real estate company for two years.

Yu alleges that the number of referrals given to her by her employer dropped off sharply after she refused to partake in the controversial practice of shadow-flipping, whereby agents encourage homeowners to accept low offers and then the property is sold on again at a higher price.

In spring of this year, the B.C. government introduced new regulations to discourage shadow-flipping, which included homeowners giving their consent before contracts are re-assigned.

When the allegations first surfaced in the spring, New Coast Realty denied it was involved in shadow-flipping and has also denied it asked its agents to break any rules or regulations and claims it doesn’t owe Yu any money.

None of Yu’s allegations have been proven in court.

Catering strike may be averted Kid-friendly market a hit Alan Campbell

A

round 400 unionized, airline catering workers at Vancouver International Airport, who had threatened to strike, have reached a tentative deal with their Swissbased employer, Gate Gourmet.

Last Friday evening, a new three-year contract has been pencilled between the UNITE Here 40 Local’s negotiating team and Gate Gourmet that, according to the union, “achieves fair wage increases, restores overtime on the sixth and seventh days of work and addresses treatment of workers returning to work after illness or injury, among other issues.

The tentative agreement, announced on Monday, averts a strike by the inflight catering workers — mainly production staff and drivers — who had issued a 72-hour strike notice on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

“After weeks of hard bargaining, we’ve got a deal that addresses the rising cost of living in Vancouver, as well as other respect issues in the workplace,” said Phillip Lin, a high lift driver and a member of the negotiating team, in a press release.

“Going forward, we are happy to settle a contract that will make sure workers can

securely take part in the company’s growing prosperity.”

Further details of the deal will be released after union members have had an opportunity to review the tentative agreement.

Workers will hold a ratification vote this week, according to the union.

Last week, the Richmond News reported how the workers were preparing to strike over what their union called “a lack of honesty” from their employer, one of the biggest in the global, inflight catering industry.

The union claimed its members were promised they would be rewarded for agreeing to a wage freeze three years ago, when the airline industry was in an apparent slump.

However, despite the Swiss-based corporate giant, whose customers include Air Canada, British Airways, Air China, United and American airlines, picking up several major contracts in recent years, the union claimed all that was being offered was a one per cent raise.

The majority of the 400 or so workers are immigrants from China and other parts of the globe.

A Gate Gourmet spokesperson told the News last week that details of the negotiations were confidential.

t’s not just the adults who have been enjoying the newfound fun of a Tuesday evening at the Kwantlen St. Farmers Market every Tuesday evening this summer.

Last Tuesday was Kid’s Day at the market with food trucks, artisan vendors and magicians and musicians.

Adding to the live entertainment was chef Karen Curtis — proprietor of Kic’s Lemonade — who hosted a cooking demo using fresh market ingredients and teaching market shoppers how to make her famous corn and zucchini fritters.

Vancity’s Richmond branches also chipped in with a cheque for $7,000 in support of the market and the Junior Foodie Passport Program.

The passports provide children with engaging activities while at the farmers market and aim to educate future generations about local food.

The activities encourage kids to engage with farmers in order to better understand

where their food comes from and inspire healthy food preparation at home.

The passport — which allows kids to track the lessons they have learned and document their experiences with new fruits and vegetables — are available free of charge every Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The market is held weekly at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University campus on Kwantlen Street.

“It’s gotten to a very critical situation on the south side of the Fraser River and I’m absolutely surprised that anybody, especially municipal people in Langley, would think that their people are going to get through either the Pattullo Bridge, Annacis Island or George Massey Tunnel more quickly than they do at the moment without some major upgrades.

The veteran mayor has been the lone municipal voice to speak out in favour of the bridge, which has drawn formal opposition from the Metro Vancouver board.

Construction of the 10-lane, 3.3-kilometre bridge is to begin next year and be complete by 2022.

Why are we doing this?

Local eating supports local farmers and helps protect our farmland, is healthy as food is fresh harvested and unprocessed, and gives us the chance to learn about and influence how our food is grown. Our food system is complex and reaches deep into everything from nutrition to climate change, social justice to economics, real estate and poverty.

The Local Eating Challenge is a way to look closely at how our own food choices — and we all eat — feed into these issues.

Local plums, beans, honey and wine abound From page 14 Still, the question persists, where am I going to get my honey, given that the early growing season has affected this year’s honey harvest?

In fact, the beekeeper from The Sharing Farm may not harvest honey this year as the season is so early and she was nervous the bees won’t have enough for themselves.

Last weekend, she scrounged up a small amount to get me started, but the hunt was on not just for honey but everything else I would need to feed myself for the week.

Looking for the widest variety of foods I could find, I spent most of a day driving from farm to farm with a copy of Richmond’s Local Eating map (RichmondFoodSecurity.org/ Local-EatingGuide) by my side.

I started shopping at Rabbit River Farms for a flat of free range organic eggs, then went to The Fowl Farmer for chicken.

potatoes, and took a side trip to go see the black Angus cows grazing nearby.

Then, it was off to Canada Berries for wine. Thanks to their case-load sale, I am fully stocked for the week with blueberry, cranberry, and blackberry wines all made with Richmond-grown fruit.

I had high hopes on the way to West Coast Bee Supply for honey, but sadly their Richmond honey won’t be available until next week so I was still looking ahead to an unsweetened week.

Next stop was Richmond Country Farms for fruit and vegetables. They had four kinds of homegrown melons, strawberries, peas, and corn. They also just opened Country Vines, a winery selling a range of wines including one made with Richmond grown grapes. Their Back Forty Pinot

Gris is a great addition to my menu.

I was still on the hunt for honey and a Facebook shout out brought me to Yummy Yards. The farmer kindly offered to extract some fresh honey for me and was able to get a few tablespoons out, though he was stung twice in the process. They did have some onions and spinach which I added to my load.

On Sunday I went to The Sharing Farm’s Annual Garlic Fest and found green beans, cabbage, salad greens, and peppers.

Finally, a backyard beekeeper heard my plight and left a jar of Richmond honey on his porch in Vancouver for me. With a fridge full of meat and produce, and now this honey, I think I’ll do alright.

I should add, we are allowed three exceptions to accommodate dietary needs and to

facilitate cooking. Most people have chosen a cooking oil, a grain, and something for flavour (like salt), but others chose essentials like coffee and cream. I suppose I could have made honey one of my three exceptions, but where’s the challenge in that?

Tunnel traffic steady: Ministry

claim that traffic levels at the George Massey Tunnel are declining is incorrect, according to the provincial government.

Langley Coun. Nathan Pachal recently caused stir by suggesting data from a provincial environmental assessment on the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project shows traffic volumes have actually gone down by nearly one per cent over the past decade. Pointing to an increase at the Alex Fraser Bridge, the councillor noted it’s another argument against the $3.5-billion mega project.

Asked to comment, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure stated the suggestion that traffic has gone down in the tunnel is based on a comparison of two years, rather than longterm trends.

“While average daily traffic levels vary from year to year, long run traffic throughout the tunnel has been stable for more than two decades, reflecting the fact that the tunnel is at capacity most of the day,” the ministry stated.

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson questioned the suggestion that numbers don’t justify the project, and that anyone from Langley would claim the bridge isn’t needed, saying she’s determined to see the much-needed project built.

the kind of stuff that most people don’t even think about: what kind of fabric uniforms are made from, what sleeping arrangements are like on submarines, and if there is such thing as shark repellant (probably not, but they tried).

This is Roach’s stock in trade: the weirder aspects of everyday life (and death).

In previous books, she’s interviewed experts on such wide ranging topics as the digestive system, the human soul, how dead bodies are dealt with, and how people are preparing to go to Mars.

Grunt is nothing if not consistent with her previous work. Roach’s style is very engaging: she can discuss the dullest of topics and still keep me interested. She’s prepared to cover really unusual topics, she takes her subjects seriously, she’s witty, and she always has an eye out for the human aspects of her topic. This

means that she’s always ready to try out whatever experiments being discussed: in previous books she attended séances, used a space toilet (a task that requires a video targeting system to get the aim right), and shared a special moment with her husband in an ultrasound machine. In Grunt, she engages in a high-pressure training exercise for military medics, goes into live warzones, and smell-tests potential stink bomb candidates.

If I have any complaint about Roach’s writing it’s that very often she will skim past a topic that would make a great book in its own right. She might drop in a footnote to point out some weird fact about a researcher or a scientist. It’s interesting. It’s often so interesting that you wish that was what was being covered

Metro needs drivers for its ‘smart’ challenge M

etro Vancouver is recruiting 200 drivers for a seven-week driving study to reduce fuel consumption, save money and cut air emissions.

The Metro Vancouver Smart Drive Challenge aims to get drivers to use 15 per cent less fuel through efficient driving techniques and feedback from a “smart” device connected to the vehicle’s computer. The wireless device tracks anonymized fuel consumption and vehicle movement information, which is displayed daily on an online dashboard.

For the first three weeks, participants will drive normally while the device collects baseline data. Then, participants will watch a 30-minute online training course and during the last three weeks of the study, participants will endeavour to apply efficient driving techniques to reduce fuel consumption.

“Personal transportation is one of the biggest contributors to climate change and degraded urban air quality,” said Derek Corrigan, chair of Metro Vancouver’s climate action committee.

“Studies like this are an important part of meeting our greenhouse gas reduction targets of 33 per cent below 2007 levels by 2020 and 80 per cent below 2007 levels by 2050.”

The goal of the study is to better understand the effectiveness of training and feedback in helping drivers reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Following the study, results will be analysed and used as a basis for developing future programs.

hough there are many exceptions, and you can choose to be cranky in your own old age, for most of us, there is a general increase in happiness with the passage of time.

In young adulthood, we demand more of the world and are more discontented. From mid life to our golden years, more of us are accepting of what we cannot change and appreciate what we do have.

How can this be?

In youth, we have health, energy, opportunity and adventure ahead of us. With age, we lose much of that and our remaining days of life are more clearly limited; we seem to be losing much of what popular culture values. How can we become happier as we age?

Couples who stay together over many decades also tend to be more content. If we’re no longer spring chickens, do we realize that we can no longer do any better? Is this due to a sense of resignation?

The answer lies in the wisdom of acceptance.

We all want to be happy. We naturally enjoy the pleasant — nice If we hold on to our meals, parties, fancy new toys and other youthful notions of happleasurable experipiness, we are bound ences.

We avoid the unpleasto be disappointed and ant — work, boredom, forever wanting. difficult relationships, pain and unpleasant emotions.

Most of us come to believe that we will be happiest if we can get (and hold on to) all that we want and avoid all that we don’t want.

We don’t realize that an essential feature of life is change.

Our shiny new toys will become tarnished, broken or lost. Every relationship must change and end. Everybody ages, and illness is not always avoidable.

If we hold on to our youthful notions of happiness, we are bound to be disappointed and forever wanting.

Acceptance is not the same as resignation or giving up. American theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr wrote his Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.”

We can accept the reality of today, and accept the challenge to make the most of what we have.

If you enter into a relationship with the intent of changing the other, you commit yourself to futile struggle. Alternatively, you can love the people you live with unconditionally, accept them as they are, and both see and nurture the best in them.

By our very natures, we are imperfect and we each have habits conditioned from the past. With insight and compassion, we can be more lovingly accepting of others (and ourselves) just as we are.

You don’t have to wait for mid life to adopt a healthier and happier approach to life. Radical acceptance is one of the foundations of mindfulness. This attitudinal shift can be strengthened through daily practice. We can create a new habit of happiness.

We can catch ourselves when we fall into the trap of “if only” thinking. e.g. “I will be happy if only I get that promotion, finish this big project, find a perfect partner, win the prize, go on vacation, or get the other person to change.”

Though we vicariously live in thoughts of the past and future, life is only lived in the reality of the present. Accept and appreciate what you have this day, and love the one you’re with.

With this approach to both the circumstances and people in our lives, we can be more unconditionally loving and happy.

he annual Street Banner Contest is officially open and is now accepting entries that celebrate the City of Richmond’s theme for Canada’s 150th birthday: “One nation, hundreds of cultures, thousands of communities, millions of people and limitless stories. Inspiring Richmond to welcome our future.”

Community members of all ages and abilities are encouraged to share their images that reflect this theme through depictions of the great places, experiences and people that make Richmond unique.

Contestants are encouraged to use a broad range of artistic mediums; collage, painting, illustration, printmaking, digital art and photography will all be accepted. Submissions will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m.

Up to 10 winning designs will be selected this fall. These designs will be produced into 1,000 street banners to be installed throughout Richmond’s downtown core, on walking paths and on main gateways into and out of the city. The banners will be displayed from March 2017 to February 2018.

Richmond hockey players are having a ball Mark Booth

any of the top women’s hockey players to come out of Richmond in recent years were back in action in their hometown with no ice to be found.

The B.C. Selects featured plenty of local talent on their way to winning bronze at the Canadian Ball Hockey National Championships at Minoru Arenas. The result marked the first time a B.C. team has reached the podium in nine years and coach Matt Halverson hopes it turns into somewhat of a tradition.

Halverson stepped away from coaching on the men’s side a couple of years ago to get involved in the women’s program after observing a B.C. game at nationals.

“I think we were playing in the seventh/eighth place game and the caliber of play just wasn’t very good,” recalled Halverson. “I just thought there was a lot of talent in B.C. and the potential was there to do much better.”

Halverson began coaching in the Vancouver Women’s Hockey League and put together an impressive line-up with the False Creek Kraken. The team had a successful season and Halverson didn’t have to look far to put together a roster when he was

appointed to the B.C. Selects coaching staff, along with Gwen Ranquist-Lemieux.

The Selects featured a number of players with collegiate or university experience, along with 10 currently playing in the South Coast Female Amateur Hockey League, the top ice circuit in the province. Among them were four Richmond Devils.

The youngest member of the team was 16-year-old defenceman Courtney Vorster, but the hometown standout was unavailable

for Nationals after being named to (ice) Hockey Canada’s U18 roster for a three-game series against the United States in Calgary that wrapped up on Saturday.

For Halverson, the talent assembled was a big step in the right direction for sport that has a low key profile but offers tremendous supplementary training for hockey players and beyond.

Halverson knows a thing are to about conditioning.

Not only is he a former player at the provincial and national level, he is a registered therapist with the B.C. Lions and Vancouver Whitecaps. When Halverson isn’t coaching locally, he is also overseeing the Cayman Islands national ball hockey team, a position that was offered to him when the country reached out to the Canadian Ball Hockey Association, looking to step up its program.

Nash team crowned B.C. champs A

team based out of the Steve Nash Fitness World and Sports Club in Richmond was among the winners at Tennis B.C.’s recent provincial championships, held at the Hollyburn Country Club Aug. 6-8 and sponsored by Miele.

Tigers & Richmond FC are RASA summer champions

R

ichmond Adult Soccer Association Summer League wrapped up the 2016 season by seeing the Rinos Tigers and Richmond FC each completing the “double” in their respective divisions.

The Danny Burns Challenge Cup final saw Division One regular season champion Tigers taking on Bingers Army.

Early in the game, the Tigers began to show their superiority and had more control and possession of the ball. Bingers, however, were a threat too. Omari Aldridge should have put the Army ahead but he pushed his shot wide of the post with the Rino keeper helpless to stop him.

Shortly after, t the Tigers slowly found gaps in the Army back line, leading to a pair of goals just minutes apart from Milan Gandesha.

It stayed 2-0 into the second half when Rinos again showed their superiority in possession and control, resulting in goals

for Jovan Blagojevic, Omid Ahmadi and Alexander Escobar.

Aldridge scored one for the Bingers but it was too little too late in a 5-1 outcome.

The Division Two final saw league champions Richmond FC meet Rinos Originals for the Sportstown Soccer Cup. Rinos opened the scoring after 20 minutes when Alfonso Munoz hammered home a shot. Richmond fought back hard and equalized on a great effort by Bevan Dixon, In the second half, both sides had many opportunities to go ahead but getting past either keeper was not to be and the match headed to overtime.

Early in the extra session, Richmond found some space down the right sideline and Mike Reston’s shot from just inside the penalty area gave the Division Two champions a 2-1 lead. Richmond had to hold off the Rinos in the dying minutes to secure the cup.

CHONELL, René René passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 17, 2016. He was born in Algiers, Algeria. He always said he was Irish by birth as he was born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. René was retired from Shaughnessy Hospital. He was also the past president of La Fédération des francophones de la Colombie Britannique. Surviving René are his wife Arleen, son Marc (Karen) Chenoll and their children Madeleine and Stephanie, daughter Claire (Harry) Moon and their sons Harrison (Katelyn) and Alexander (Clarissa) Moon. Also survived by Marc and Claire’s mother Renée, Arleen’s son Carl Lawrence, and the newest additions to the family great grandson Atticus and great granddaughter Maverik. René also leaves behind his brothers Jean-Michel Camélis (Andrée), Jacky Chenoll (Roselyne), their families, and other relatives in France. René will be remembered for his love of food and wine and his chocolate-making skills, but especially for his love of his children and grandchildren. A Funeral Service will take place on Friday, August 26, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Richmond Funeral Home, 8420 Cambie Road, Richmond, BC. Margaret (Mouat) Cross (70), of Richmond, BC, passed away the evening of August 5th, 2016 surrounded by her family.

Born on April 13th, 1946 in Blyth, England to parent James and Ivy Mouat. She was one of ten brothers and sisters. Margaret married Melvin in 1968. They spent nearly 41 years happily married until Melvin passed away in 2009. Margaret missed him terribly but is now reunited with her love. She is survived by her sons Damian Cross (Jodi) and Adrian Cross (Sarah), grandchildren, her little Missie and all her friends.
