here appears to be some progress being made in the case of a Richmond cyclist who was killed on Sea Island just over two years ago.

According to Ron Mahy — whose daughter Christy, 36, was struck on July 30, 2014 by a car as she waited to cross onto Russ Baker Way from the Dinsmore Bridge — police told him their investigation has concluded and that the matter is now awaiting approval of a charge by the Crown.

Mahy, a former long-time Richmond resident, told the News that just days after a memorial ride he organized to mark the second anniversary of Christy’s death, he received a phone call from the investigating officer in the case, who informed him of the development.

Housing market too hot for business Survey cites real estate as main reason for firms struggling to find workers PHILIPRAPHAEL

T

he rising cost of housing in Metro Vancouver and short supply of units deemed affordable is putting the squeeze on local businesses trying to find employees who call Richmond home.

That’s the message derived from a Richmond Chamber of Commerce survey, which found that a large proportion of its members’ employees live outside the city.

And when asked if housing local prices — about $1.7 million for the average detached home — impacted their ability to attract workers, 62 per cent said it did.

For Doug Nightingale, CEO of Nightingale Electrical Ltd., which has about 260 employees, it’s a problem he fears will not get much better, if at all.

“It’s been a significant challenge over the years to get people to come to Richmond,” he said, adding that, in the last decade, as road traffic in and out of Lulu Island became increasingly congested, his firm has been keen to hire locals.

“But that’s now a real challenge with housing prices, especially for our administration staff who are not on the high end of the (pay) scale when they start.”

Even some of the firm’s senior staff have preferred to remain further out in the Fraser Valley, because they are not willing to pay for the high cost of housing in Richmond, Vancouver or Burnaby.

And that has caused a significant impact for some who have to endure the daily commute to the Ironwood area office.

“Some of them live in Langley and start at 7:30 a.m. So, they are up at 4:30 a.m. just so they can get here on time,” Nightingale said.

“And if they are trying to leave at 4:30 p.m., there’s no point, because the traffic is gridlocked. And that makes it tough on them.”

Currently, less than 10 per cent of the company’s workforce live in Richmond. In the past decade or so, that would have been about 15 to 20 per cent.

“These are tradespeople, electricians, apprentices, there’s no way these people can afford to live here,” Nightingale said.

“There’s nothing affordable. And I don’t think this 15 per cent (foreign buyer) tax will have a long-term effect.

“There is definitely no new people in the trades who are living and working in Richmond. And if they are, they are prob-

ably just out of high school, going to trades school and living at home with their parents. But as soon as they are ready to get out, there’s no way they are going to live in Richmond. It’s just hopeless.”

This type of survey of its members is rare, said Rob Akimow, chair of the Richmond Chamber.

“Our board of directors and staff were hearing about the hot housing market in almost every conversation. We knew we had to take the temperature of business,” he said.

“Historically, a survey to our members on this topic was uncommon. Our results show overwhelming that business leaders want to see concrete action on this issue.”

What form that will take, in addition to the new foreign ownership tax that was put into effect Aug. 2, the chamber is uncertain.

But for business owners such as Nightingale, future prospects do not look promising because the company, although it serves clients across the Lower Mainland, is not pulling up stakes and moving after being here close to 32 years.

In fact, it’s had the reverse effect, as some promising young apprentices the company invested time and money in have decided to part ways, citing travel times to and from Richmond, plus a lack of affordable housing options.

“The jobs that are out there for them are closer to (their) home,” Nightingale said. “And that’s become a larger and larger factor when we hire people.”

“It’s an everyday, in-your-face challenge that we run into and I don’t know if there is a solution,” he said. “Maybe it’s just a function of us growing and being an international city and that’s the way it is.”

ne of the many people in Richmond looking for affordable rental housing is warning others to beware of a Craigslist scam.

James Marshall thought it was too good to be true when a friend emailed him the link

for a three-bedroom apartment for rent close to Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Richmond campus near Lansdowne and Garden City roads.

But, knowing that decent accommodation is thin on the ground in the city, he sent off some basic personal details to the ad nonetheless.

When a very detailed and grateful response was emailed back from the would-be land-

lord, however, Marshall laughed and shook his head at the request for $2,000 to cover the first and last month’s rent.

“His first response was incredibly detailed and a whole big story about how he was overseas, in West Africa or something,” said Marshall.

“He was wanting the first and last month’s rent up front but I wanted a showing first.

“He wanted me to send me the money

through a money order and he would DHL the keys. It was obviously a scam, but I would be worried that, given how desperate people are right now for affordable rental accommodation, someone is going to take the risk with this guy and give him the money.”

Marshall said that he “wouldn’t be surprised” if the scammer gets lucky.

Marshall is, by the way, still looking for a place to stay in Richmond.

Mahy added despite the new information, he feels frustrated by the length of time police have taken to get to this point.

“This has been a fight for two years for them to do this,” Mahy said. “And the only reason it was done was because some heat was put on them.

“How come, just two days after the ride and the story about this being in the paper two weeks in a row, they finally decided to maybe move ahead with this a little bit?”

For their part, both the Crown and RCMP remain tight-lipped on the matter.

In an email from the Richmond RCMP, detachment spokesman Cpl. Dennis Hwang told the News the force remains committed to the investigation and to keeping the family informed about the status of the investigation moving forward.

In an email to the News, Crown spokesman Gordon Comer said it does not normally comment on whether investigative files have been submitted to Crown counsel for charge assessment or not.

“I can say that sometimes it is an iterative (repeated) process, as there are occasions where a file is returned to the police for follow-up,” he added. “I can also say that we do try to keep in touch with victims and

The lack of official confirmation of progress in the case has left Mahy feeling bewildered by the investigative and legal processes that could still result in no charges being laid.

“If there’s not enough evidence to charge the person, what is going to happen? What about all of those eye witnesses who were sitting there in that intersection at three o’clock in the afternoon, watching my daughter get killed. What does that mean – nothing?

“You know, it’s not a matter of being pissed off, it’s the absolute frustration that very little has happened with this case.

“Do I have to go and spend $10,000 on a lawyer to see these proceedings followed up?”

teveston Harbour’s manager, Bob Baziuk, has been around a fair bit, 26 years in the fishing industry, to be precise, so the latest cull on salmon fishing on the Fraser River isn’t raising his eyebrows too much.

Still, the situation is so dire that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) called a halt late last week to all salmon fishing on the Lower Fraser amid predictions of the worst-ever sockeye return on record.

Recreational anglers and sport fishing companies have decried the decision, saying they are going to great lengths to avoid fishing the prized sockeye.

But, according to Baziuk, whose harbour would normally be buzzing right now with the sounds of the sockeye season, it’s the commercial fishermen who could, quite literally, be on the hook financially.

“August is generally the month when there’s a few opportunities for commercial fishermen to get out there and make some money,” Baziuk told the News.

“This is obviously going to impact on their income; they can still go and harvest other species, if they have the licence for it, but (the sockeye run) is their money-maker.

“To what extent it will affect them, that depends on a lot of variables.”

Baziuk said, although he’s witnessed a few lean years, he can’t quite recall one like this.

“The salmon run in four year cycles and

there are some bonanza years; it’s very much feast or famine, it depends on a lot of things,” he said.

“It could affect (the harbour) a little and certainly will in terms of sales at the public fish market. The sockeye is the prize catch; so this closure is significant.

“If (the fishermen) do get a run, they will make the most of it and you can expect to pay a premium price (for sockeye).”

Baziuk said he heard a rumour that there may be a possible sockeye run opening in the fall, but he doesn’t “have any significant information and even that may be just for chum; it’s very hard to say.

“But it certainly doesn’t look good at the moment, especially as the sockeye window is usually until late August, sometimes early September.”

Of the DFO’s decision to shut down all salmon fishing, Baziuk said the next generation (of fish) needs to be looked after, “otherwise it will be worse in four years.”

The DFO issued notice on Thursday that one hour after sunset, the fishery would close until further notice. Earlier in the week, the Fraser River Panel downgraded its estimate for the summer sockeye run from 992,000 to 700,000. The total run is only expected to be one million.

In 2014, about 20 million returned from the ocean. Their offspring are expected in 2018.

The DFO also announced last Tuesday it is taking “further action” on the 75 recommendations of the 2012 Cohen Commission, which sought to address declining Fraser River sockeye salmon runs.

Keeping your cool in Rio Games’ heat Philip Raphael

A

pair of Richmond university graduates are helping Canada’s Paralympic athletes keep their cool in the heat of fierce competition at the upcoming games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Jaymes Williams and Laura Hutchinson, of Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Richmondbased Product Design and Fashion and Technology program, have developed a specially designed set of cooling vests for members of Canada’s wheelchair rugby team.

Williams said that paraplegics have difficulty regulating their body temperature and that could make the difference between making the podium or not.

“Essentially, they have a hard time sweating and their core temperatures can spike quite quickly,” he said, adding traditional methods to help them cool off have involved sprays, misters, drinking slushy iced beverages and applying cool, wet towels to skin surfaces.

“When you’re in a game, the last thing you want to do is drop out because it’s way too hot.”

And when it came to the needs of the wheelchair rugby team, their specially designed wheelchairs allowed only certain parts of their body to be cooled. So, there was a need to develop a vest that can be worn on the sidelines during breaks in the action. And for Williams and Hutchinson, that became a class project.

“We ended up meeting staff from the Canadian Sports Institute at the Richmond

Oval and we learned about the problems these athletes have to overcome,” Williams said.

“And thermal regulation was one I was particularly interested in. They were playing around with these cooling vest ideas that weren’t working for them. So, I saw this opportunity to use my education and design perspective to improve things.”

That was about 18 months ago.

Since then, the class project graduated into a full-blown research project that utilized other forms of funding and assistance from a Vietnam-based sports apparel firm called Maxport JSC, which develops products for large, brand name companies such as Lululemon, Nike, Adidas and Under Armour.

water and the other is what’s called a phase change material which is a liquid that can freeze at a higher temperature, in this case 12 C.” That level is ideal for cooling down body temperature without inducing shock with a zero degree ice vest.

“You start cramping when you apply too much cold. We want to slowly cool down the body temperature,” Williams said, adding the vests are worn during warm-ups before the game, on the sidelines and after the game.

“Before, they were using what was basically a sheet of ice cubes and were velcroing them around their bodies,” he said. “They didn’t have a functioning product they could wear and feel confident in. Plus, our version looks more like a piece of sportswear rather than a medical device.”

After being frozen, the vest’s liquid can stay at 12 degrees for about two hours.

“That means it could last for pretty much a whole game,” Williams said, adding the vest can also be “recharged” quickly in a cooler because of its high freezing point.

Away from the elite sports arena, the vest has medical applications and even everyday use, which could attract the attention of a major sports apparel firm.

Those are all avenues to explore after the games have concluded because right now, all efforts are on helping the Canadian team, Williams said.

“I want to help people. That’s pretty much what I am in it for,” he said. “And to provide the athletes with something they can feel confident in and will help them, there’s a lot of pride in that.”

Throughout the Olympics, the amount of time and dedication of these young (and not so young) athletes spend on their sports is frequently mentioned.

What your readers may not know is that they can help our future Olympians in a very impactful way, and very easily.

The Walter Wu Scholarship fund was set up with the Richmond Community Foundation by Walter’s father prior to the 2010 Olympics.

Having supported Walter, a Paralympic swimmer, Mr. Wu knew, firsthand, the struggles encountered by post-secondary student athletes.

While their classmates are working after school and during breaks, the athletes are training...and even those students on full ride scholarships don’t get everything covered; many have to give up pursuing their Olympic dreams for lack of funds This is where readers can help.

Contributions of any amount can be given to the Walter Wu fund, through the Community Foundation with tax deductible receipts provided.

Once the fund reaches $10,000, it will start providing Richmond postsecondary athletes with scholarships.

Dear Editor, I was born and have lived all of my life in Richmond’s Terra Nova neighbourhood.

Over that time, I have observed the changes in Terra Nova.

I watched people move in and out of houses.

I witnessed the construction of the Terra Nova Adventure Park, the Terra Nova Sharing Garden, and the trails that lead to the hidden beauties of Terra Nova Park.

Most importantly, I have seen the increase in the numbers of people coming to the dyke to enjoy the sunset every evening.

In my teenage years, my feelings for the neighbourhood blossomed into pride, as I marvelled how Terra Nova evolved into a place where nature and people flourish alike, where nature could be

blended into a harmonious, green neighbourhood. Terra Nova has proved to be a spectacular and peaceful ecosystem.

One significant change, however, is the mosquitoes that come along with the increase of people.

These mosquitoes can stubbornly pursue a person, whether cycling or running along the dyke.

This has been occurring over the past few summers.

However, to my delight, the mosquitoes have become less aggressive this summer.

I am thankful for those in the city hall’s mosquito control program who took measures to monitor and treat the mosquito breeding sites at the dyke.

Terra Nova mosquitos are gone

S

afety has become Premier Christy Clark’s top reason to scrap the Massey Tunnel and she’s voiced three safety concerns on TV. I’ll ask her about them.

Concern 1: Christy, on Shaw’s “Voice of BC,” you told Vaughn Palmer, “If there was an earthquake of significant size, everyone who was in the tunnel would probably never walk out.” Actually, though, an early warning system was installed years ago to reduce the risk.

After an earthquake, sensors pick up harmless seismic waves that arrive much sooner than destructive seismic waves. As CBC News put it, “The moment the sensor detects the first waves of a damaging earthquake, the tunnel closes to traffic.”

Vehicles can’t get in, but the ones already in can head out.

Concern 2: Christy, you told Global News, “There is a vital safety issue in the Massey Tunnel. In 10 years, that tunnel will no longer be safe to navigate.”

Navigate? You may be conflating the need to refurbish the tunnel in 10 years

(ventilation, lighting, etc.) with your wish to remove it so a deeper channel can be dredged for mega-tankers.

Concern 3: On Shaw and Global, you warned about a major earthquake (magnitude 7.0): “Communities on the other side of the river would be cut off, so we have an urgent safety issue to deal with.”

Want a suggestion, Christy? Add a twolane tunnel tube for transit and emergency services — at high seismic standards.

(Many people favour solutions like that.)

Readers, let’s hope this gets the premier’s fears on track.

Maybe she’ll add the new tube right away?

I also suggest she revive a half-done riskreduction project.

The Massey Tunnel safety risk is mainly from flooding via cracks.

The project’s interior phase, which was completed a decade ago, improved the tunnel’s strength and flexibility to meet a set standard: one hour to get out.

The exterior phase was put off to save money.

Thanks to technology advances while we waited, this phase is more valuable than ever. At a hundredth the cost of the touted “Port Metro Bridge”!

It would reduce liquefaction, using the best current methods to keep the tunnel aligned and usable.

It would also quakeproof the tunnel approaches/exits, replace crash magnets like the Steveston Interchange, and upgrade overpasses.

Vehicles leaving the tunnel would then have a drivable route in emergencies.

But the province has recently disparaged this still-needed phase of the old project.

They say a 2007 report indicated “serious concerns the tunnel could shift during the required in-stream excavation and stone columns installation.” Not really.

It actually said “low risk of accidental damage” and offered ways to manage it.

Christy, to put safety first, we need an independent, wide-reaching and fastacting analysis of the safety aspect of the Massey options that the current project and informed citizens propose.

That includes the bridge, and my engineer advisor is concerned about earthquake-safety questions the bridge team doesn’t know how to answer.

We do know that earthquakes happen.

So Christy, please act today. Thank you!

Onni mess is historical Dear Editor, Re: “Enough already of the Onni versus city council fight,” News Aug. 10.

I have read this letter and others with similar content and have been left with one thought, “what a great attitude.” I’m being sarcastic, of course.

I probably have a much different view of what the city has done well and what the city could do better, but in this particular situation, I stand by the city and there socalled “lack of action.”

In fact, I wish the city would do more in terms of Onni, including court action if possible.

It is sad to see storefronts in such a beautiful place currently looking like makeshift storage units, some storing what would appear to be entire apartments.

But who to blame? That’s the question we are really asking. I’m wondering if anyone upset about the empty storefronts and the city’s role in this has spent the time to research the history of this little plot of land.

With very little effort, I found a link on the City of Richmond’s website which helps with some of the history.

Some of the more relevant points coming from this document are the fact that this would be the third time that Onni has attempted to renegotiate the zoning and development for this piece of land.

From an original single storey to a mixed-use multi-storey to currently attempting to change the zoning completely.

A comment has also been made suggesting most people are more concerned

with filling the store fronts with businesses then standing up to Onni.

There is a letter in the above mentioned document from homeowners in 2006, showing how unhappy they were with the first renegotiation.

I am sure you can find plenty of people not happy with Onni’s current set of renegotiations.

The next point to tackle is the idea Onni took the risk, so why should they not be able to reap the rewards and that we “all assume” Onni hasn’t found any tenants because there aren’t any.

Well some of us might assume that Onni hasn’t found any tenants because they just haven’t looked very hard.

Why would they? I think it is reasonable to assume they have made lots of money already in developing the surrounding area and this little piece of land is a bonus for them, so why not keep pushing and pushing until they get everything they want? They are in no hurry. After all, it has worked up until now.

I find it confusing that anyone in litigation would advise a client to renegotiate for a third time with someone else when the first two agreements that were done in good faith apparently don’t mean anything.

I guess it is like a professional athlete who signs a six-year deal, scores 50 goals in the second year of the deal and wants to renegotiate. The question is, who are we? The player or the team?

How much do we really owe the Oval?

Dear Editor, Re: “City staff in Rio to sell the ROX,” News, Aug. 10.

The Richmond News deserves a gold medal for revealing the continuing financial debacle at our “Oweful” (Oval) under the “care and management” of our mayor and chief administration officer.

Richmond taxpayers owe the Richmond News and staff a great deal of credit for enlightening the public in this affair.

The public should know, the combined assessed values of 130, 160 and 2005 – 6111 River Road (part of Oval property) totals $4,532,000 for non-city businesses and attracts property tax.

The assessed value of the Oval portion (city) totals $232,461,000.

On this assessed value, the Oval in 2015 attracted revenues of: Games Operating Trust: $2,465,029; federal/provincial tax source: $2,464,029; Richmond taxpayers: $3,814,700; members/admissions/programs: $7,643,069; and other: $2,223,421.

Expenses included salaries and benefits of $7,867,871 (exceeds total revenue from members, admissions and programs); utilities $1,009,384 (up from $900,555 in 2014), general and administration $802,134 (up from $546,804 in 2014) and marketing $672,993 (up from $197,708 in 2014).

The Oval has no mortgage payment.

The Oval is exempt of Richmond property tax. The Oval pays no income tax. Richmond provided the Oval with $3,814,700 total benefits in 2015.

The Oval has declared a $2.3 million surplus for 2015 and $2.7 million for 2014 on this $232,461,000 property while provided with full property tax exemptions and no mortgage payments.

I am less than impressed.

Where would the Oval be without the property tax relief, city grants, federal/provincial and trust grants. Do the non-city tenants at the Oval location pay rent to the City of Richmond or to the Oval?

In 2014, the Oval reported 22 per cent of users were not Richmond residents.

From the Aug. 10 news report, I understand, several City of Richmond staff have taken a sponsored junket to Rio de Janeiro and Oval staff have refused to disclose the staff numbers and costs.

Mayor Brodie, please direct the chief adminstration officer to publish those numbers in addition to the annual cost to federal, provincial and municipal taxpayers, for all benefits, grants and tax relief provided to the Oval.

Please report all taxpayer costs associated with the Oval Olympic Museum from project concept to completion in this newspaper.

In addition, please provide the number of visitors to the Oval Olympic Museum and total revenues generated from this sector.

For comparison, please provide the same details for the BC Sports Hall of Fame Olympic Museum in this paper.

Heaven forbid, we cannot sell this white elephant to a non-resident because of the extra 15 per cent property purchase tax in place.

Just wondering how the owners/operators of private fitness and sports venues in Richmond feel, knowing they are heavily subsidizing their competition over at the Oweful.

Pass the valium, please.

early all of British Columbia’s Gulf Islands have sizable creative, communities — crafts-folk producing pots and paintings, bowls and embroideries. On Hornby Island, whose winter population of 1,000 swells to five times that in July and August, much of this output is on display in a charming summer market set up in the woods.

But here the artisanal gene extends further, to libations: a winery, a fruit winery, a distillery and a meadery.

That’s a remarkable number of liquor makers for such a small community, but only the last item is truly unusual.

While even distilleries have become rather common in the past decade, a meadery is still a rare beast.

Middle Mountain Mead is down two dusty gravel roads, through a forest of fir and cedar trees. Helen Grond, a geologist by training, started it in 2005 on 3 1/2 hectares she and her then-partner bought in the 1990s. Grond had been planting herbs, especially lavender, which she sold at the local market, and was looking for other ways to make use of her crops. Her research led her to mead.

“A drink I took of the magick mead,” says Odin, chief of the Norse gods, in Runahal, a saga written in 1220, “and then I began to know and to be wise, to grow and to weave poems.”

Mead, made from fermented honey, was the drink of the gods — not just the Norse ones, but of Greek, Celtic and non-European deities too, Grond learned.

There were many different types, including a category called metheglin (Welsh for medicinal liquor), which used herbs. Just what Grond was looking for.

Today, Middle Mountain makes nine meads, whose alcohol content ranges from 12 to 20 per cent. From Wednesday to Sunday throughout the summer (1-5 p.m.), visitors can sample them at the on-site tasting room, sipping while seated on a large deck looking north across the Strait of Georgia to Texada Island.

Either Grond or her husband, Steve McGrath, is usually on hand to pour and explain. You might start with Cyser, a cider-like applehoney wine that was the first thing they made, continue on to the Mead of Inspiration, Grond’s favourite and their

closest product to red wine, and, if you’re lucky, conclude with Rosemeade, made from rose petals and similar to ice wine.

Along the way, your pourer will tell you what you’re drinking. The Mead of Inspiration, for example, has more than 30 ingredients including 10 herbs, some with “mildly psychotropic effects,” says Grond. Green Tea Elixir can be heated like saki and contains stinging nettle and ginger, which have healing properties. Grond says that alcohol is a much better solvent than water for releas-

ing the active ingredients of herbs.

Middle Mountain only makes about 6,500 litres of mead a year. Aside from the tasting room, its products are available at private liquor stores in B.C., and Grond can ship across Canada (but not internationally). Have they had any orders from, say, the Lethbridge Druid Society, wanting to consecrate a new ring of standing stones? Which brings me to the issue of weight.

Used to be if I went the gym three times a week, I could eat anything I want and not gain an ounce.

Am I disturbed by the aging process, which seems to be chasing me at warp speed? You bet I am!

But then I stop, give my head a shake (which animates aforementioned wattle), and remind myself that it happens to everyone. Well…except George Clooney.

Getting philosophical, I’d say that this is the natural order of things.

That women and men are supposed to get softer, flabbier, and less attractive as they age.

The world would be a scary place if young men found much older women attractive. And if young women found old men attractive....wait....they do!

And then some of them marry those decrepit old guys with a Cadillac and a cough, and end up with a gazillion dollars.

In a perfect world, both sexes would age gracefully, accept the process with dignity, and the world would live in peace. If only.

Aging is not for sissies, that’s for sure.

Words of advice: 1. Enjoy your beauty, taut skin and gorgeous hair while you’re young.

2. Never wish to trade places with someone else.

3. Flaunt your inner beauty, too.

4. Accept yourself as you are.

I promise you’ll find things about aging that will make you grateful for your years.

I just can’t remember any at the moment. I’ll get back to you.

Novice hiker set to tackle Kilimanjaro

I

t is unusual for someone who’s almost 60-years-old, unfit and with no hiking experience whatsoever to declare that he’s going to scale one of the highest mountains on the planet.

But that’s just exactly what Richmond dentist Salim Kamani did last December, when he vowed to tackle Africa’s Mt. Kilimanjaro with his 26-year-old daughter, Safiya, to raise awareness and money for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. The big event, called “Anything for Alzheimer’s,” is now just a few weeks away and Kamani, who practices out of Coppersmith Dental Centre in south Richmond, has revealed how he’s been shaping up since deciding to take on Kilimanjaro’s 19,341 feet ascent.

“After I took on this cause last December, I only started to train then,” said Kamani, who recently turned 60.

“Prior to that, I didn’t do any hiking; very little fitness actually as I was in a car accident a few years ago.

“But little by little, I’ve been working up the hiking and I now get out there three or four times a week, I’ve done the Black Tusk at Garibaldi Provincial Park and I have a personal trainer.”

Samani said he was motivated to do something to help fight Alzheimer’s after seeing a marked rise in recent years of suffering at the hands of the disease in his patients, their caregivers, their family members and friends.

“I see younger and younger people being affected by it all the time and I thought it was about time I did something about this terrible, debilitating disease,” he added.

“I’ve been in practice for 35 years and the percentage of people I meet that are affected is increasing. I felt compelled to raise more awareness and money.”

Talking of which, although an upcoming fundraiser in Vancouver for Samani’s cause is sold out, he and his daughter are well short of raising their target of $50,000.

“The reaction from people I know has been very encouraging, but I do need to raise more money!”

“I feel a little nervous, but also excited at the same time; there are different thoughts going through my head right now.”

Funds raised from Anything for Alzheimer’s events support programs and services in the province that improve the quality of life for people living with dementia and their families, as well as helping to fund research into the causes and cures.

knowing what day of the week it is or getting lost in a familiar place.

5. Impaired judgment — not recognizing a medical problem that needs attention or wearing light clothing on a cold day.

6. Problems with abstract thinking — not understanding what numbers signify on a calculator, for example.

7. Misplacing things — putting things in strange places, like an iron in the freezer.

Novel mirrors highs and lows RACHELROSENBERG Book Club

M

iriam Toews has this way of writing lines that are so beautiful that sometimes I have to close the book I’m reading for a moment, just to marvel at them.

All My Puny Sorrows is a book that is full of such moments; alternating equally between being eloquently wise, wickedly funny and jaggedly heartbreaking.

In every one of her novels, Toews balances on the delicate line between tragedy and comedy. That is what makes her novels so real and relatable, a big salad bowl full of happy and sad ingredients.

Often, the relationships the novels explore are relationships within families and Toews’ portrayal never comes across false. The sadness doesn’t come across as melodrama, the happiness isn’t forced.

Thirty or so years later, Elf is a world-famous pianist with a devoted live-in partner, while Yoli is divorced, unemployed and raising two teenagers alone.

Despite that, Elf has a tendency toward increasingly violent attempted suicides. After Elf’s latest in a series of life-long suicide attempts, Yoli attempts to help save her sister and fights against her own resentment and pain.

It isn’t an easy read. The honest examination of a family coping with a suicidal relative is heavy, painful stuff.

Still, Yoli is a resourceful, funny character and the warmth of Toews’ writing style and the deep connection between the sisters kept me reading, even through the darker moments.

Not only that, but I loved every character including the minor ones — texts to Yoli from her teens were a comedic highlight.

The novel should be grim, but it’s not — I finished it feeling genuinely uplifted.

That’s life, it reminded me, all the good and bad, the hilarious and absolutely terrible.

And beyond it all, what we’re left with are the people who love us and for however long they can, they help us get through.

love, sorrow and fear.

The main character is not perfect which I like because he depicts an average human being. I highly recommend this book to anyone who can handle romance, tensions, and a bit of blood.

T

he legacy of the 2009 B.C. Senior Games being held in Richmond lives on with the Twisted Dragons.

It was seven years ago when Fred Kohlberg came up with the idea of the host city entering a team into the Games’ dragon boat racing event. Today, he oversees a year-round program that became Richmond’s first team exclusively for seniors.

The summer season continues with Saturday’s Steveston Dragon Boat Festival and the Twisted Dragons are hoping to build on the momentum from last month’s event in Penticton. However, Kohlberg is quick to point out, winning competitions is not at the top of the priority list.

“Our mandate is fitness, fun and then competition,” explained Kohlberg, who serves as the team’s manager and coach.

“We do like to win when we compete but the main reason we are out here is for the camaraderie, fitness and fun.”

The Twisted Dragons’ summer season typically runs from March until the end of September and features a handful of competitions, capped by the B.C. Senior Games. Ninety minute training sessions are held twice weekly at the program’s home — the John MS Lecky UBC Boathouse, located on the north arm of the Fraser River and not far from the Richmond Olympic Oval.

fitness and includes a 10 week indoor program at the Oval.

Kohlberg says the Twisted Dragons are open to anyone over the age of 55, although there are limitations.

The summer roster is capped at 30, with the boat capacity being 26. Three underage rowers are allowed to join if they happen to have older partners, however, they cannot participate in senior designated competitions. That’s something the Twisted Dragons never have to worry about. Their average

age is around 65 and their oldest paddler is 78.

Races range from a 250 metre sprint to 500 metres. This weekend in Steveston, the Twisted Dragons will compete in four mixed races and one designated for seniors only. In Penticton, the team entered six events over two days and placed first in five of them.

Still, the emphasis is on fitness and fun.

Judy Allen signed up after seeing a newspaper ad three years ago. The avid tennis player and golfer now has another physical

activity to enjoy.

“It’s great core exercise,” she said. “For people who may have knee or ankle problems it’s not weight barring. I like to play tennis and golf but I have a ligament strain in my ankle. I can still come out and paddle.

It’s good for cross-training and a cardio workout too. Plus all the (wildlife) we get to see in the river that people usually have to pay to see.”

Dunfee looking forward to 50 km race after top 10 finish E

van Dunfee is hoping his current comfort zone in Rio bodes well for Friday’s 50 km race walk.

The Richmond native made his Olympic debut in the 20 km race walk event on the opening day of the athletics competition at the Summer Games and produced a Canadian best finish of 10th place.

Dunfee relied on a strong finish to complete the street course in one hour 20 minutes and 49 seconds — placing ahead of training part-

ners Inaki Gomez (12th) and Ben Thorne (27th).

Even so, Dunfee says much of his preparation for Rio has focused on his endurance for the 50 km race and he is excited for that event.

It was back in December when he set the Canadian record (3:47:48) over that distance in winning the Australian Road Walking Championships.

“This is the perfect example of

why I’m a 50 km race walker,” said Dunfee, following the 20 km event.

“I felt really comfortable at just over four-minute per kilometre, as soon as they upped the ante, I just don’t have that other gear, I can keep it in third gear forever, but as soon as they step into fourth I just don’t have it.

“I know I can be there; we’ll see what I can do in the 50km. I’m excited for that one, that’s what I’ve been training for.”

The race is scheduled to start at 4 a.m. (PDT) on Friday.

Richmond’s other athlete in Rio — swimmer Noemie Thomas — just missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals in the 100 metre butterfly.

The 20-year-old finished fifth in her heat with a time of 58.27 seconds.The race was eventually won by Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom, followed by Canadian teen sensation Penny Oleksiak.
