ith non-residents now representing about one in every six patients at Richmond Hospital’s maternity ward, a petition to the federal government has been penned from a local community activist concerned about the potential impact “anchor babies” may have on the Canada’s social security net.

After witnessing numerous pregnant women coming and going from a nearby house in her Blundell neighbourhood, Kerry Starchuk is asking Ottawa to reconsider its birthright citizenship laws, which grant a passport to any child born in Canada, regardless of the parents’ citizenship or residency.

The petition was sponsored by Richmond Centre MP Alice Wong, who, via email from her executive assistant, stopped short of expressing outright support for Starchuk.

“While a sponsor MP does not have to agree with the opinions or request set out in the petition, this topic affects the constituents of Richmond Centre,” read the email from Wong’s office.

Kenney’s controversial Bill C-24, which sought to reform citizenship laws, was rescinded by the new Liberal government earlier this year.

Outspoken Vancouver immigration lawyer Richard Kurland told the News this was a good thing, as rescinding the Jus soli (right of the soil) law would create a bureaucratic nightmare.

Neither Citizenship and Immigration nor Statistics Canada track non-resident births across Canada, and while Kurland said Kenney was correct to suspect the numbers are underreported by hospitals, he doesn’t think it’s a major issue that requires federal action, considering there are roughly 380,000 births in Canada each year.

“It’s a transaction cost of democracy. You’ll always have someone doing something wrong. If one kid in the class does something wrong, are you going to punish the whole class?” asked Kurland, who said Richmond is likely to see more non-resident births, given its proximity to the airport, and hence Asia, particularly China.

The European chafer beetle has become a serious lawn pest in the City of Richmond and the region. Lawn and boulevard damage is caused by chafer grubs feeding on the roots of turf grass (causing brown grass patches) prompting birds and wild animals to dig through lawns in search of chafer grubs.

Diamond earns recognition on Canada Day Philip Raphael

L

ong-time children’s entertainer and Richmond resident Charlotte Diamond always sparkles on stage.

And during Friday’s Canada Day celebrations at the Steveston Salmon Festival, she had one more reason to shine as she proudly wore her brand new pin granted to those who earn the Order of Canada.

“I was shocked. I never thought in my life I’d ever get this,” said Diamond, who has been performing for the past three decades with her trademark, catchy tunes about life, love and family.

“I was so pleased, honoured and proud, all at the same time.”

Diamond received a phone call out of the blue in early June, notifying her of the award. She doesn’t know who nominated her, but feels her work in the community, and with various organizations promoting wellness and family, earned her the nod.

“Because I write for organizations like UNICEF and the Red Cross, and the work I did for BC Children’s Hospital — I wrote them a theme tune — it made me feel that, gosh, somebody was listening,” she said.

Diamond, 70, added it was also a special moment to be able to share news of her award with a large crowd of people at the Salmon Festival’s children’s stage, where she was performing for the first time, despite having lived in Richmond since the 1970s.

“I felt like I was surrounded by so many people who had, over the years, supported my music and were now introducing it to their children and grandchildren,” she said.

“It was wonderful for me to look out and see grandparents, parents and young kids. There were three generations right there in front of me, all singing together.

“I thought to myself, ‘how often does that happen in life?’ It was lovely. It was a gift that I was so glad to experience and share.”

When she was introduced to the stage, news of Diamond’s award was announced.

“They cheered and clapped. It was a special moment,” she said.

That rousing welcome inspired Diamond to introduce, in depth, to the crowd a couple of her songs that speak of Canadian values. One was Leave the World a Little Bit Better. The other was May There Always Be Sunshine.

“Those songs are so simple,

but perfect for such an event,” Diamond said. “They talk about taking care of the things we have, starting with our families, then reaching out to our communities, our country and then the rest of the world.

“And to see the audience do all of the songs’ actions with me,

and smile with each other, it made me realize that something very special happens when you put families together. It sent shivers up my back. There were times when I just backed off and let them sing.”

Sometime in the coming months Diamond will be invited

to attend an induction ceremony at the Gov. General’s residence at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

Diamond said she’s looking forward to the event, as well as making more music for fans, young and old, to enjoy.

“I think there’s much more to come,” she said.

Steveston resident is appealing to the City of Richmond to save one of the village’s smallest, but much-loved, garden spots from the wrecking ball and developer’s plans.

Anne Lerner is asking city council to consider preserving the property belonging to Kay Sakata, whose immaculately-kept garden on First Avenue near Moncton Street, right in the heart of Steveston, was a focal for passers-by for decades.

Sakata passed away last month, after turning 100 in March, and had lived in the house since moving back to Steveston following the Second World War internment of JapaneseCanadians.

Lerner, who is originally from Winnipeg and has called Steveston home for the past nine years, told the Richmond News the garden was such a treasure, that having it bulldozed would not be the right thing to do.

“It is such a wonderful place. We should keep it,”

One city councillor Lerner emailed about the idea was Carol Day. She passed the query on to the city’s parks and recreation department to see what, if anything, the city could do.

“We have so little heritage left in Richmond that we need to do all we can to save it,” Day said.

“There’s no promises as to what the city can do, but I have to ask the question.”

Day added she was dismayed when the Wolff House on Broadway Street, that was built in 1898, recently fell to re-development.

“Often the first call is for the bulldozer. But that should be the last call,” she said.

Sakata’s home was built in 1946 and features a lush garden that was a stopping point for many people, whether or not they knew her. And Sakata, who was made honorary parade marshal at the 2006 Steveston Salmon Festival, would often gift people with cuttings of her plants.

aycare operators have inched forward in their quest to make history as the first commercial tenants of Steveston’s beleaguered boardwalk at Imperial Landing.

And while on Monday Richmond city councillors unanimously passed the first reading of a “spot rezoning” application by the City of Richmond to accommodate Generation Daycare at the Onni development this September, Coun. Bill McNulty expressed further frustrations at how the developer is operating.

“It seems right here Onni is

driving the truck. An agreement has been made, exclusivity given and we haven’t even rezoned,” said McNulty, noting Generation Daycare’s five-year lease handshake, agreement despite no formal approval from the city.

“So, it’s rather interesting; so good luck with that one on our negotiations with Onni. They’ll come back with the same and that bothers me very, very much,” said McNulty.

At issue is the fact the buildings at Imperial Landing are zoned “maritime mixeduse,” which does not include childcare.

However, a childcare licence could soon be permitted for the company following a July 18 public hearing,

which may formally approve the special rezoning, thus accommodating the soon-to-be evicted daycare.

The agreement means Generation can expand its operation, from its current 3,400 square-foot site on Trites Road to a 5,600 square-foot second floor of the second easterly Imperial building.

Meantime, what is to be done with the rest of the dormant buildings remains up in the air, as the city negotiates community amenity fees with Onni in exchange for more profitable commercial rezoning.

McNulty said the city needs to give its “head a shake” if it thinks it will get what it wants from Onni.

Fire-rescue and ambulance crews attended to the man, who suffered burns to his hands and upper body. Richmond Fire-Rescue is now warning residents to be cautious around small engines and make sure that all gas-powered equipment is turned off before refuelling.

“Pay attention when refuelling small engines

such as lawnmowers, weed eaters and other yard tools,” said fire chief John McGowan.

“Pumping or otherwise transferring gas is the handling of a hazardous substance and should be done with extreme caution. Gasoline is highly toxic in addition to being a fire hazard.”

If a fire starts while refueling, don’t remove the nozzle from the tank or try to stop the flow of gasoline. Leave the area immediately and call 9-1-1 for help.

Playing Trump card may happen Dear Editor, Re: “Dang warns about going ‘Donald Trump,” News, June 15.

Despite Coun. Derek Dang’s attempt to stifle free speech in Richmond, he needs to understand that if some of us want to “Go Donald Trump,” that is exactly what we could do, although I do not know anyone, myself included, who would choose this route; but it is open to anybody.

What is shocking about this Chinese-only hiring sign is that Dang would take the apologist’s attitude and try to deflect blame to the rest of Richmond, as he feels it is a complex issue that needs handling without insulting

either side.

We can imagine the reaction if someone put up an English-only sign that said “Chinese need not apply.”

This is what the Chinese-only sign is saying to the rest of Richmond, but Dang doesn’t see it.

Yet, he would be the first with the howls of protest, claims of racism and demands for apologies.

Is it any wonder that the divisions between the Chinese community in Richmond and the rest of us is widening and hardening?

Heritage efforts are ‘lame, weak’ Dear Editor, Re: “Queen Anne falls to developer,” News, June 29.

I often wonder why the media continues to aggravate old time Richmond residents with development stories. I can appreciate being informed about it, but what will ever stop it? A revolution? Don’t think so. A municipal election? Don’t think so.

Take the recent story about the demolition of the Queen Anne-style Wolff House on Broadmoor Street. Another typically lame, weak and arrogant example of Richmond’s municipal council that goes back to the late ‘60s.

Having grown up and spending most of my 65 years living in Marpole and Richmond, I find it more difficult recognizing any historical landmarks or heritage identity of Richmond.

Developers seem to regulate their own interest and appear to be able to control their own objectives. It’s no wonder that municipal, provincial and federal election turnouts are at all-time lows. The lack of respect or popularity for most politicians was more than evident during their appearance in the Canada Day parade in Steveston.

Credit should be given, however, to Harold Steves who, as usual, is the only local politician that still has respect for the people that elect him.

Summertime is festival season and once again, Richmond residents can experience a number of major events that will provide free, family enjoyment. The events add to our cultural vibrancy, create connections between neighbours and generate economic activity through visitor spending.

teveston’s Viena Wroblewska loves to explore.

And when the single mom ventured into unknown territory during a trip to Nicaragua last November, she discovered not only some new people and places, but embarked on a personal challenge to help youngsters in the impoverished Central American country.

That’s why she recently put the word out to family, friends and acquaintances to gather up any used baseball equipment and send it to her before she goes back July 25 to Nicaragua where she will distribute the gear.

“I’ve never done anything like this before, so I wasn’t sure what kind of response I’d get,” said Wroblewska, 39, who speaks six languages, including Spanish, and runs her own translation services business, which boasts corporate clients such as video game

giant Electronic Arts.

Although, she called the effort “Gloves For Kids” and set up a Facebook page to help spread the word, the gloves only started to trickle in and were quickly outstripped by a collection of baseballs and bats.

“I guess people don’t want to part with their gloves so easily because they have sentimental

value. So, when I started getting other equipment I thought, why not, I’ll take it all down with me.” she said, adding that baseball savvy friends told her some bats can cost up to $90 new.

“That’s so expensive, especially when the average

monthly wage in Nicaragua is about $200.

“Parents are more worried about putting food on the table. I met some kids who didn’t even have shoes, let alone any equipment to play baseball.”

Wroblewska is also getting her company, A Plus Translations, to help out with another charity she stumbled across, called the Antonio Project, which employs the families of disabled children to make hammocks.

“Down there, when a women gives birth to a disabled child, she is almost shunned entirely by society,” Wroblewska said. “It’s almost viewed as God’s punishment.”

With that in place already, Wroblewska said she wanted to branch out and find a cause she could call her own. And providing baseball gear was the ticket.

“It’s the country’s national sport,” she said. “The kids have so much fun. And I have time now that my business is kind of running itself and I can take time

Another factor motivating her was Nathan, her 14-year-old son who plays outfield for the Richmond Chuckers.

Wroblewska looked

at him and realized the fortunate circumstances he was in, compared to the children she met in San Juan del Sur in southern Nicaragua.

“I am hoping to see lots

of smiles on the faces of children when I go back,” she said.

Mildew accumulates as a result of dust, dirt and debris, combined with humidity or moisture. Proper ventilation, combined with regular cleaning will help prevent these problems. I have also noted some useful tips below.

• Before showering, always run the fan. Keep it on for the entire shower, and for at least ½ hour to 45 minutes after. Ideally, your fan should be a newer moisture-reducing fan. You can also buy a timed humidistat. This helps to remove the humidity levels in the bathroom.

• After showering, squeegee down the walls and shower door. Remove all wet items, like towels from the bathroom.

• Check out the corners and base of the shower, looking for loose or discoloured caulking. Apply new caulk and grout as needed, while sealing grout lines with grout sealant. Apply caulking around the base of the sinks and toilet as well.

Always use protective eye wear, a mask, gloves and keep the fan on while you work. I do not recommend using bleach. There are many other less toxic cleaners, such as Concrobium. Your local hardware store can set you up with all of the tools and products for the job.

• Clean the dust from your fan cover as needed. Also, be sure to clean any dirt, dust and debris from along the windowsills, walls and floors, especially behind the toilet if possible.

• Check under the sinks periodically for loose pipes and leaks. Ensure that the toilet is properly secured to the floor to prevent a break in the wax seal. Have all repairs completed quickly by a plumber if you cannot do so on your own.

A good strategy is to focus on quality foods and quantity of meals over the course of the day. Fuel your body with lean proteins, whole grain unprocessed carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables and healthy fats as well as water to keep you well hydrated. If you make choices such as these then you should be able to sustain yourself through a 60 minute training session without having to specifically focus on your pre training needs.

W

ith a total of 59 medals, it is safe to say that Richmond’s Dynamo Fencing Club successfully took over at this year’s provincial championships.

Dynamo opened its first facility in 2006 and has since become the home for athletes ranging from beginners to Olympians, and the young and old alike, from ages three to 60. This August will mark the one year anniversary of the club’s new facility at Vauxhall Place in north Richmond, which is six times larger than its previous home, making Dynamo the largest fencing facility in Canada.

“Having a large facility allows us to do all kinds of things in terms of training,” says Igor Gantsevich, president of the Dynamo Fencing Club. “We’re now aiming at looking towards being an international destination for fencing.”

The recent upgrade has allowed Dynamo to double its student population, as well as host the 2016 provincial championships.

Of the 24 events at this year’s provincials which took place from June 10 to 19, Dynamo athletes secured 21 of those gold medals. Athletes also took home 16 silver and 22 bronze medals.

club’s success at numerous events and competitions, including his own father, Victor Gantsevich, who was the Canadian National Team coach.

“It starts all from the coaching,” says Gantsevich. “We are the only club in the province to have coaches of this level.”

Dynamo athletes have a busy summer coming up. Ongoing events and outreach camps taking place at the facility and at the Richmond Oval will feature nationally and internationally acclaimed fencers from around the world.

The club is also looking forward to the start of the school year when it will partner with the West Vancouver School District for a high performance, in-school academy.

Elite Richmond coach works with Olympic duet

ichmond resident Kara Kalin has played a role in Canada’s road to the summer Olympics, working with the country’s only synchronized swimming medal contenders competing in Rio this August.

Kalin, Synchro BC’s technical director and head coach of Richmond-based Pacific Wave Synchronized Swimming Club, was invited to share her clinical counseling knowledge with the junior team in Montreal in June and to observe the Olympic duet of Jacqueline Simoneau and Karine Thomas, who are headed for Rio. Kalin is not new to coaching Canada’s top national synchronized swimming athletes,

having been the apprentice coach with the Junior Worlds Team in 2010, assistant coach for AG13-15 Comen Cup in 2011 and 2012, as well as the apprentice coach with the Senior B Team in 2013.

“I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with the Olympic duet,” she said.

“From a coaching perspective, I have enjoyed working with their coach, Meng Chen, and feel excited to be a part of the final preparation before Rio. Karine and Jacqueline have been working extremely hard and truly improve each and every day.

I am excited for Canada’s duet to wow the world!”

WILSON, Wallace Stewart October 3, 1930 - June 11, 2016 .

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our father, grandfather, father-in-law, and friend, Stew Wilson, after a brief hospitalization. Stew was predeceased by his mother and father, Arthur and Mildred, his brothers Gary and Paul, and by his beloved wife of 57 years, Beverley (in 2009), as well as their infant son, Greg. Stew is survived and lovingly remembered by his children, Marie (Dave) Sanderson, Gary (Debbie) Wilson, and Laura (Dean) Cardno, grandchildren Devon, Heather, Rebecca, Amber, James, and Kathleen, and greatgrandchildren Ryan and Rachel. Stew is also survived by his first and longest loves, the game of baseball and the New York Yankees. Stew was born in Thorold, Ontario, and came to Vancouver at the age of 15, where he attended Magee high school, and met lifelong friend Jim Beaton. A talented athlete and determined competitor, Stew played football, hockey and baseball, and it was a stint as a semi-pro pitcher after graduation that took him to Kamloops where he met the beautiful young Beverley Tennant.

A baseball career, and the intention to follow a career in journalism were both set aside as Stew and Bev married in 1952 and began their family, returning to the lower mainland and residing in Richmond from 1957 until today. Stew remained involved in baseball, and after coaching at the U18 (Connie Mack) level, Stew, Bob Latrace, Gary Gilmour, and Gord Lowrey were instrumental in the formation of a Juvenile baseball club sponsored by Richmond Auto-Body in 1967; this eventually became the Richmond Budgies organization. Stew served as pitching coach, mentor, and friend to countless young ball players over the next forty years, while Bev joined him at the park as the team’s scorekeeper. Together, they were “Mr. and Mrs. Baseball” in Richmond, and an important part of the city’s sporting history.

Stew had a love of classic movies and all styles of music, but particularly jazz and the blues. He was quick witted, with a mischievous and selfdeprecating sense of humour and a booming voice. In dealing with Stew, there was never any doubt where he stood on an issue, or on where you stood with him. He would voice a wellconsidered opinion on any topic, clearly, lucidly, forcefully, and sometimes loudly. Stew was a devoted husband and father, a wonderful and loyal friend, and we will miss him terribly.

A Celebration of Stew’s life will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday July 16th at the Richmond Funeral Home, 8420 Cambie Road, Richmond. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the BC Heart & Stroke Foundation or the BC Cancer Society.
