Protest at Drag Queen Storytime debated Below is a small sample of the response (for and against) to our story “Protesters mar family-friendly drag queen event in park” and my column “No fairytale ending for fascists,” both published online and in our July 28 print edition — Eve Edmonds, Editor Dear Editor,
their enjoyment of the reading.
As part of its annual Pride Week celebrations, the Hamilton Community Centre has proudly hosted the Drag Queen Story Time for the past three years. As in previous years, children participated in the event with the full knowledge and consent of their parents. The Hamilton Community Association Board is appalled by the protest that disrupted the Drag Queen Story Time on July 25 at Hamilton Park. Fortunately for the young children in attendance, Bryan Bone aka Miss Gina Tonic, and our community centre staff were able to keep the attention of the children on the books, and the protestors’ actions did not appear to interfere with
While the signs carried by the protestors purported to be against hate, the only hate at the event was brought by them. While their signs protested fascism, the only fascist views present came from them. Like other neighbourhoods in Richmond, Hamilton is a diverse and inclusive community. We fully support — and will continue to support — Pride Week and the Drag Queen Story Time and greatly appreciate the attendance of Miss Gina Tonic and everyone else at the event.

Give your head a Kudos to the Richmond News for publishing the picture of those two racist protesters on the front page of the newspaper. Those two are a disgrace to mankind. They should be ashamed and embarrassed by
their actions. Plus, they are quite ignorant and don’t even know what “fascism“ means. Their poster does not make any sense.

Although I found your editorial interesting, the conclusion is off the mark.
telling us a fairytale about the “free” Canadian economy.
We do not, in our apathy, fight fascism. The cowardly democracies of the West condone some balding ersatz Hitler (Putin) to destroy a peaceful democracy (Ukraine) and watch it on television, then hold conferences in fancy resorts to talk about it.
The B.C. government forces us to buy government car insurance and then, with a stroke of a fascist pen removes the tort law from us even though it is a tenet of British law on which Canada is based, Quebec notwithstanding.
Our federal government establishes marketing boards to inflate produce prices much higher than in a free market economy — paying producers to dump excess or not produce it at all. They limit competition in the telecom sector for the same reason whilst
Then there is the “empty homes” tax, more fascist intervention in the lives of Canadians. And on it goes. Yes, the world has turned on its head and no, we do not fight fascism enough.

Care aide accused of stealing Woman pleads guilty 96-year-old client’s credit card to business tax fraud
A Metro Vancouver care aide allegedly committed multiple frauds against an elderly man, including identity theft and the use of a stolen credit card. The suspect, Ana Marie Lat Chamdal of Surrey, was hired as an in-home care aide for a 96-yearold man who lives in Richmond. On June 29, Richmond RCMP was informed that a wallet was stolen from his residence. Credit and debit cards from the wallet were also fraudulently used in Surrey and Delta. The Surrey RCMP Financial Crime Unit took control of the investigation and identified Chamdal as the suspect. Investigators believe the suspect stole the wallet and fraudulently used debit and credit cards. On July 22, police issued an arrest warrant for Chamdal, who has been charged with fraud over $5,000, possession/use of a stolen credit
card, two counts of using a forged document, identity theft, personation with intent to gain an advantage, and breach of undertaking.

A Richmond woman was fined $75,000 for making false statements in a business’ tax return. Tzu Chin Lee, who also goes by a number of other names, pleaded guilty in the Provincial Court of British Columbia for one count of making, or participating in the making of, false or deceptive statements in a tax return under the Income Tax Act, said the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) in a news release. Lee pleaded guilty for her role in preparing a corporate income tax return for Agape Enterprise Corp in 2016. According to the CRA, she was aware the return “overstated the cost of materials” by $847,605 between December 2015 and June 2016. Lee completed the return and arranged to have it signed and filed with the CRA. Evidence of the overstated amounts came from false commercial invoices, said the tax agency. “To ensure that the tax system is fair for everyone, the CRA makes sure that people who try to avoid or evade paying their fair share of taxes are held accountable,” it added.

Vanishing sidewalks confound the public Vikki Hui
VHUI@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Richmond is known for its notorious drivers, but if you’ve ever tried to avoid the road by walking in the city, you might have encountered another conundrum — the sidewalks. Walking in Richmond is a little like playing an open-world game for the first time. Despite having a view of the area on Google Maps with clear directions, you’ll find yourself spinning like a top trying to find a walkable path when the sidewalks inevitably reach an abrupt end.

And they would know not to walk down the little path on the side of the parking lot, as it’s just a small patch of concrete leading nowhere. All this is not to say Richmond is unwalkable. There are plenty of nice areas to walk in — River Road, Garden City Lands and the wide sidewalks along No. 3 Road. But the case of the

vanishing sidewalks continues to confound many.
In fact, 65 per cent of Richmond News readers have had to search for sidewalks while walking in the city, according to a recent poll. Some sidewalk-less areas include Steveston Highway after Palmberg Road, with “double dump trucks speeding both ways,” and the Olympic Oval. “There never were sidewalks [near the Oval], but they’re needed now!” said one reader in response to the News’ Instagram survey. Only 14 per cent of readers said they had no problem walking in the city, and 13 per cent mostly drive rather than walk. Pavement problems
paving
So what’s the deal with these perplexing paths? It all starts with the placement of sidewalks when an area gets developed, which is a complex issue “determined by many factors,” said Clay Adams, city spokesperson. Simply put, the reason why sidewalks don’t exist in some areas is that they weren’t considered a necessity at the time of development. The need for a sidewalk is determined by the city’s engineering and transportation departments, and safety is at the top of their priority. “Some communities such
$
as those on Richmond’s west side do not have consistent sidewalks as they were not a requirement or deemed necessary at the time they were developed,” he said, adding that sidewalks are often required in zoning or building applications for newer developments. If you think about it, sidewalks can be seen as a road map of how the city of Richmond has evolved over the years.
Other than safety, layouts of sidewalks are also an accessibility issue. For example, a small section of the Lansdowne parking lot has a bona fide sidewalk created by years of Richmondites trekking through the roadside flowerbeds. The lumpy dirt path is not the easiest to walk through for those with mobility issues, and it could be dangerous on rainy days. “The city recognizes that accessibility remains a challenge in some areas and we continue to work with developers to create or upgrade sidewalks where we can,” said Adams. Adams confirmed that the city is aware of concerns raised about sidewalks around Lansdowne, and they will be addressed as redevelopment continues. “Anyone who feels a sidewalk is essential to safety can contact the city and staff can follow up to determine feasibility, need, etc.,” he said.

35 years before it moved to Langley in 2017. Carter’s store carried quintessential British sweets and pies and was known as the pioneer of imported British goods and delicacies in Richmond. Sadly, Carter passed away on Saturday, July 30, due to cancer and old age, according to Bernie Blake, a friend of Carter’s. “People loved Mary. She loved music and was very social and had quite a magnetic personality,” said Blake, who worked with Carter at the store in Steveston and in Langley.

Carter moved from Birmingham, England, to the U.S. in 1962, where she spent 10 years with one of her sisters. They then moved to Surrey to meet up with their older sister and mother. In 1979, Carter set up the first Mary’s British Home at Richmond Square, a strip mall on No. 3 Road before Richmond
When the area was under re-development, the store moved to a backstreet in Steveston before it took over a more permanent spot on the southwest corner of No. 1 Road and Moncton Street. Another 10 years went by and Carter’s store was shuffled to a spot on Chatham Street due to redevelopment once again. But it didn’t seem to matter where Carter and her store were, customers would travel the distance to visit.
“People would come and pay Mary a visit just to reminisce about the past and even introduce their family to her,” said Blake. Lenny Entwistle, owner of Steveston’s Best of British, described Carter as a “funny lady and one of the hardest workers” she has ever known. “Back in the days, she served a cup of tea with scones and clotted cream, and the teapot had, like, a knitted tea cover on, too,” said Entwistle. “She was quite the character and was well-loved in the village; she will be sadly missed, that is for sure,” said Entwistle. A public memorial will be held later this month with details to be finalized Saturday. — Valerie Leung/Richmond News
DORIS’ STORY
“There’s lots to do here, every day there’s something on the program you can take part in it.” Doris Daum wasn’t looking for a move to a senior citizen housing complex when her friend suggested she take a look at The Maple Residences in Steveston, Richmond. “I lived alone in a large townhouse,” she says, “It was a lot of work and expensive to keep up, so I thought about moving to the Maples, put my name down and decided to give it a go for three months.” That was in 2012 when The Maple Residences opened its doors. “I’m still here,” she laughs. Like all seniors who make the difficult decision to downsize and move, Doris found it a challenge to let go of some of her furniture, but she’s happy with her choice of suite. “I have a south-facing suite with a lovely view of the water and a park across the street. Everyone here has a patio or a balcony and we have our own plants and flowers. It’s quite lovely.” Active living for seniors is important at The Maples. “There’s lots to do here,” says Doris, “Every day there’s something on the program and you can take part in it. Steveston is a lovely place with lots of areas for walking.”
While The Maples offers dining options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as morning and afternoon tea, residents have an apartment-sized fridge in their suites together with a microwave. “I always have the option to stop in my suite and have a bite to eat if I prefer,” says Doris. For seniors who are nervous about moving into independent housing and worry that they’ll be without friends, Doris has some advice: “Just come out of your room and join in. Everyone is so friendly here and the staff is wonderful. I like company and if I want a cup of tea, I just go downstairs and there’s always someone to chat to.”

Heat recovery reduces harmful gases
The News reported last year this facility allows the plant to clean and store biogas and was believed to be “the first of its kind.”
Vikki Hui
VHUI@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
A heat recovery project is coming to Richmond’s Lulu Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, estimated to cost $10 million. Local and federal politicians were at the plant on Gilbert Road near Dyke Road to announce the clean energy initiative whereby heat from treated sewage will be used to warm up the facility instead of biogas. Funding of $1.78 million from the CleanBC Communities Fund and $2.14 million from the federal government’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program is going towards the project. Officials say the project will increase renewable natural gas production and support regional climate action goals. It will also free up biogas, currently used for indoor heating and plant process needs at the Lulu Island Renewable Natural Gas Facility inside the treatment plant site.
A9
The freed-up biogas can then be cleaned and sold to FortisBC instead, pursuant to its agreement with Metro Vancouver to “deliver the renewable natural gas to its customers to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and help meet provincial climate action targets.” Revenue, stated Metro Vancouver, will be reinvested into projects targeting wastewater resource recovery. The need to flare excess gas, which could pollute the air with more harmful gases when flares burn poorly or go out, will also be “significantly” reduced. “Liquid waste contains a wealth of nutrients and energy that can be recovered and be used beneficially,” said Richard Stewart, chair of Metro Vancouver’s liquid waste committee. Labour backs incumbents
One of the oldest labour groups in B.C. has come out with its endorsements for the Oct. 15 Richmond municipal elections — and they are backing most sitting council members.
The Vancouver and District Labour Council (VDLC) is endorsing the incumbent mayor Malcolm Brodie — so far, his only opponent for the mayor’s chair is RITE Richmond candidate John Roston. Furthermore, VDLC is endorsing all incumbent councillors who have announced they are running for re-election, despite representing various slate affiliations. The only incumbent Richmond council member not endorsed by the VDLC is Coun. Linda McPhail who hasn’t publicly
announced whether she’s running again.
The list of endorsed candidates includes incumbents Chak Au, with the Richmond Community Coalition slate, Couns. Andy Hobbs and Alexa Loo, and Couns. Carol Day and Michael Wolfe with RITE Richmond. Butterflies released to honour tragic death Vikki Hui
VHUI@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Friends and family commemorated the death of Christy Mahy with a butterfly release.
The sun shone brightly as friends and family gathered at the Larry Berg Flight Path Park to remember Christy Mahy, who was killed by a dangerous driver exactly eight years ago. Christy tragically lost her life at the age of 36 at the intersection of Russ Baker Way and Dinsmore Bridge back in 2014. The dangerous driver, Erjon Kashari, had a lengthy criminal record prior to the fatal accident.

For the past eight years, her friends and family have gathered annually at the Flying Beaver pub near YVR’s south terminal to ride in her memory.
said, but he said he’s able to keep going because of the support from his loved ones.
“The reason this all started was [because] my daughter loved motorcycles,” said Christy’s father, Ron Mahy, adding she was the first to ride at the back of the HarleyDavidson bike he rebuilt.
Brandie Mol, one of Christy’s closest friends, said “words can’t express” the gratitude she had for the bikers who participate in the annual ride and for Richmond News’ reporter Alan Campbell.
Ron was emotional as he reminisced about Christy. “As a father... It’s hard to let it go,” he
“I’ll probably keep doing this until I can’t ride,” he added.
“If [the riders] didn’t come out to give something to write about every year... I don’t think they would have extradited
[Kashari] back,” she said. Kashari, an Albanian refugee claimant, was allowed to leave Canada just four months after causing Christy’s death. It then took six years to have him extradited back to Canada to face trial. “I think because every year we had a reason to ask the questions, and [the authorities] had a reason to answer because it was on the front page... So just gratitude forever that we got some sort of justice for [Christy],” Mol explained.
Since this year’s ride falls exactly on the anniversary of Christy’s death, and Kashari was finally brought to justice last year, friends and family wanted to do something special. “It’s done. He’s gone, court’s done. We can just start fresh and just remember her for her. And we always will,” said Mol. Just before meeting up at the Flying Beaver pub for the eighth annual ride, Christy’s loved ones gathered to release butterflies and lay flowers and gifts in her memory near the intersection where her life was tragically cut short. “Christy and I always believed in guardian angels. So dragonflies, butterflies — that sort of thing. Whenever we saw them we went, ‘My mom!’ And it was just kind of our thing,” explained Mol. Over the past eight years, some new faces have also joined in on the annual tradition. “I can’t think of anyone else really on the planet that gets this many people to come out year after year just to remember them. Not even celebrities. That says [who] Christy is. The kids come now that she doesn’t know, but they would have loved her,” said Mol. “She was a special girl, and for as long as people come out, we’ll be out here supporting her.” — with files from Alan Campbell

A newly completed biosolids dewatering facility at Richmond’s Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant will help make way for transforming an adjacent lagoon into freshwater ponds that will benefit a number of migrating birds that use the island as an important stopover site. The dried-out and trucked-out biosolids can also be used as a building material and have been used in landscaping projects throughout B.C. for decades, including at Iona Beach Regional Park and Vancouver International Airport. “Metro Vancouver is committed to using innovative approaches to generate energy and other resources from wastewater, including producing biosolids for beneficial use in land reclamation and landscaping projects,” said Richard Stewart, chair of Metro Vancouver’s Liquid Waste Committee. “One goal of the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade is maximizing re-

source recovery, and this project will help Metro Vancouver produce and handle biosolids more efficiently.” Metro Vancouver said the $61 million facility, which is expected to begin operations in late 2022, is an important “first step” for more critical upgrades to the treatment plant. The fully-enclosed facility has “stringent odour controls” and will dry out the solids left after the initial wastewater treatment, turning them into beneficial biosolids. Sav Dhaliwal, chair of Metro Vancouver’s Board of Directors, described the project as “one of Canada’s most dynamic and transformative urban sustainability programs.” “The upgrade of the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant,” said Dhaliwal. “... represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to contribute to the health and well-being of people, as well as the ecological health and biodiversity of the Fraser River estuary and the Salish Sea.” “This new facility sets us up well to carry out these ambitious and necessary upgrades.”

The cleanup projects will be carried out by the Coastal Restoration Society, Misty Isles Economic Development Society and OLF, which will clear 400 kilometres of shoreline debris from North Vancouver Island to the south coast of the Sea to Sky region. In total, the projects will support the creation of 150 jobs, according to the province. Meanwhile, Heyman noted that the province is investing in new technologies to turn used plastics into new products. He also said B.C. is working to expand the number of products that can be recycled, including electric vehicle batteries. He added Li’s gold medal win at the 2022 Egna Spring Trophy event in April jump-started his international reputation. “In the last couple of months, he’s continued to show significant improvement, though. All of these factors have led to him being named to represent Canada in this competition.” Despite Li’s first time competing in an international junior event, he said he’s excited to showcase what he has been practicing. “I’m excited to show what I’ve been training and learning through the couple of months of training and what I’ve achieved this year,” said Li. “I feel really proud of myself, it’s like a big goal has been achieved.” Li plans to compete just as he trains, taking things “one step at a time” in preparation for the international event.
