7-Eleven closure should Two solitudes of housing be an election issue Dear Editor,

Dear Editor, Re: “Richmond community petitions to keep Steveston 7-Eleven store open,” online, April 17.

This month, many Richmondites were saddened to receive the news that the 7-Eleven on No. 1 Road and Steveston Highway would be shutting its doors for good. This 7-Eleven has long been a part of the Steveston community, serving students of the nearby schools, as well as others and serving as the only 24-hour store in the area.

The reason for this closure is an all-toofamiliar story: rental increases outpacing what businesses can afford. This is also just another story in a growing pattern of disappearances of convenience stores among other small businesses across Richmond.

Just in recent memory, the 7-Elevens at No. 3 Road and Williams (which is now sitting empty) and at No. 2 Road and Steveston Highway, as well as multiple other independent stores have closed due to the same issue of skyrocketing rent. It is now

rumoured that the same fate is happening to the Blundell 7-Eleven.

With a growing density in suburban areas, and many single detached homes being converted to higher density living, we need more local stores, not fewer.

Anyone familiar with the Steveston 7-Eleven knows that it is practically never empty, with a continuous stream of customers and online delivery orders coming in at all hours. Take a moment to consider the absurdity that even a business this busy, owned by a large international corporation cannot afford to keep its doors open in Richmond.

With a civic election approaching this year, I pose this question to the local government; What are we doing to bring commercial land prices down and stop the disappearance of stores and jobs around our city?

Re: “Readers debate city’s rental response,” Letters, April 14.

I enjoyed your substitute editorial on April 14! I read both letters about housing in Richmond with great interest. I know both writers and consider them friends and colleagues. One is a well-respected housing developer, who regularly appears before city council to speak on local housing proposals. I also know many of his housing developments include LEMR (low end market rental) units. The other is a retired outreach worker who says she has tried on several occasions to secure LEMR units for her clients but has never found one.

Juxtaposing these two views on the editorial page brilliantly shows the two solitudes in Richmond when it comes to housing. One sees the city council and developers providing affordable housing through the LEMR program. The other has seen too many homeless and at-risk residents unable to access a LEMR unit.

As an affordable housing proponent, I can say both views are right. But it doesn’t

mean more can’t be done tfor those who need truly affordable housing. Whether a LEMR unit is “secured” (promised), built or occupied, it does not appear there are enough of them. Nor are there many other affordable housing options for low-income individuals and families.

BC Minister of Housing David Eby recently said we need a good mix of social housing, rental units and units for purchase. I would say, in Richmond the “mix” is in dire need of some balancing. The city’s own 2021 Housing Needs report states that between 1990-2020, 94 percent were houses/condos for purchase; only six percent were purpose-built rentals.

Although the city has increased the mandatory percentages of LEMR contributed by developers over time, purpose-built rentals including LEMR are not keeping up with the demand.

Unvaxxed not on ‘vacation’ City agreed to mediated backpay Dear Editor,

Re: ‘Backpay for unvaxxed unfair,” Letters, April 14.

Dear Editor, Re: ‘Backpay for unvaxxed unfair,” Letters, April 14 Editor Eve Edmonds’ “note” to last week’s published letter “Backpay for unvaxxed unfair,” requires correction.

Ms. Edmonds asserts that, because the matter was decided in mediation, it “was not the city’s decision” to pay back-pay to those city workers who remained unvaxxed and were therefore put on unpaid leave.

As readers who have worked in management or been active in a union know, any mediated settlement requires the agreement of the parties to the dispute.

If the parties cannot agree to a settlement, only then does the matter proceed to arbitration and

only then would the result be “not the city’s decision.”

So the city, and that means either George Duncan, the city’s CAO, and/or council (likely during an in-camera meeting) would have had to agree to the mediated back-pay settlement agreement.

If it can be established that council agreed, and it was not an agreement within Mr. Duncan’s discretion, then not a single member of the current council who voted for the settlement will receive my vote again in the fall election, as this settlement is grossly unfair to all those city employees who did the responsible thing and got vaccinated.

The stance that Yvonne Williams has taken in the mentioned article is lacking empathy and an understanding of employment law in my opinion.

I’ll start with the most absurd assertion that the workers put on unpaid leave will now look back on their time off as recipients of “paid vacation.”

Last I checked a vacation might include some of the following: - Travel abroad. Nope, can’t do that without vaccination.

- Rest and relaxation. No again. Ever try relaxing when you’re not sure if you can make your mortgage payments? Can you rest not knowing if you’ll have a job in the future?

- Go out with friends and fam-

ily. Not going to happen again, as these workers couldn’t experience more than dine-in at a fast food shop.

When it comes to the matter of this ruling being fair, I’m not fully aware of the mediation process, but I can take a good guess that the duty to accommodate was ignored or overlooked in the implementation of the city’s mandate.

No worker I know, given a choice, would choose unpaid leave and an uncertain future over a modified job that would reduce exposure to the public and co-workers. The train of thought that this ruling will result in future disobedience is absurd given the difficult choice these workers had to make at the outset of the mandate.

The letter finishes with a note on upholding principles. These workers signed on to do their

job under a contract, a legal agreement that at the time did not include any requirement to comply with future vaccinations. The employer changed the conditions of employment and in the eyes of the employment law, consideration (usually financial) needs to be offered when this happens. I strongly doubt any was offered.

There are many lessons to be learned from this pandemic.

It would be a shame for us to pave over all the laws and rules that were designed to protect workers’ rights in the aftermath instead of learn a lesson on how to better implement them while keeping everyone employed.

During the summer operation of the Richmond Night Market, located at 8351 River Road (directly west of River Rock Casino Resort), traffic on No. 3 Road may be heavier than normal. Evening travel delays may occur in the area.

The Richmond Night Market runs from April 29 – October 10.

Hours of operation will be: • 7pm–12am: Friday and Saturday • 7pm–11pm: Sunday and Statutory Holidays • 6pm–12am: Sunday preceding Statutory Holiday To get to the airport or to Vancouver the use of alternate routes, such as Dinsmore Bridge and Russ Baker Way, is strongly encouraged.

To other nearby City Centre destinations, including River Rock Casino Resort, the use of Great Canadian Way is recommended.

The Canada Line may also be used as an alternative to travel to the Richmond Night Market or other previously mentioned destinations.

The police watchdog has cleared Richmond Mounties of any wrongdoing, after a takedown of a knife-wielding man they shot seven times.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO BC) was alerted last October, when the RCMP was called in to deal with reports of a man waving a large kitchen knife in front of a house on Turnill Street, close to Garden City Road and Granville Avenue.

According to the IIO’s report, almost immediately after the officers’ arrival, the man charged at one of the officers — who had his gun drawn and had warned the man to put down the knife — forcing them to shoot at him.

The man made it, according to the IIO, within 10 feet of one of the officers, before being shot three times.

However, the shots apparently didn’t seem to take immediate effect, with the knife-wielding man still slashing at

The Mountie then fired two more shots while backing away, according to the report.

It was only then that the man — who was armed with a 20-centimetre bread knife - finally fell to the ground.

But it still was not enough to completely subdue him and he rose once more, this time to his knees and again reached for his knife.

The IIO detailed how video evidence and independent witness statements corroborated the officers’ accounts of what happened and that, under the circumstances, the officers’ were justified in using potentially lethal force.

“While in every challenging interaction with a member of the public, police should consider attempts at de-escalation, in this case, the officers had to consider their protection first, then move to de-escalation efforts,” wrote Ron MacDonald, of the IIO. “Given (the man’s) virtually immediate response to police presence was to charge (the first officer) with every indication of lethal intent, (neither) police officer had any chance at deescalation.”

Early morning blaze at No. 1 and Frances An early morning fire at a low-rise housing complex in Richmond has claimed the life of a woman in her 60s.

Fire crews and police were called to the scene in the 8700 block of No. 1 Road – understood to be the Apple Green complex just north of No. 1 and Francis roads – at around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Richmond RCMP has said that the lone occupant of the home, a female in her sixties, was found inside unconscious and that “emergency crews were unable to revive her.”

Further details are being withheld at this time, pending notification of her next of kin.

Police say that, at this time, the fire does not appear to have been suspicious and that Richmond Fire-Rescue and the BC Coroners Service continue to investigate.

The section of No. 1 Road was closed in both directions for several hours Wednesday morning so emergency services could tackle the blaze.

The extent of the fire is not yet known.

Fifteen per cent of cars were found driving 80 km/h on Kittiwake Drive when the City of Richmond went to check out complaints about speed.

“It was only through the neighbourhood grapevine that those people (many more than on Kittiwake) heard about the city proposal,” Ritchie explained. “This happened very late in the game.”

Clearly, there are safety concerns on that street, and the city is considering whether to put in traffic circles to make it safer.

Furthermore, Ritchie is concerned many drivers don’t know how to navigate around traffic circles.

But Steveston resident Allisa Ritchie said, while she recognizes speed can be dangerous on the roads, she is concerned traffic circles on Kittiwake Drive in the Westwind area is going to make it hard for large vehicles to navigate.

“This will cause more accidents,” she said.

The city asked residents on Kittiwake Drive, after receiving complaints about speeding, whether they’d like a traffic circle installed. Almost two-thirds of Kittiwake residents responded to the survey, but, at this point, there isn’t overwhelming support.

Furthermore, they reduce vehicle noise, vibration and exhaust compared to other traffic-calming measures like speed humps.

However, traffic circles have been shown to reduce collisions by 70 to 80 per cent and significantly reduce the severity of collisions, said city spokesperson Clay Adams.

ICBC statistics show there have been 11 collisions on Kittiwake Drive in the past five years.

Luxury condo strata faces age bias case be accepting the new terms - she was told she would be out of a job, where she had worked for four years.

A former worker at a luxury condo tower in Richmond has accused the building’s strata of age discrimination.

Nicola Smith was acting head concierge for two years at the Rivergreen complex overlooking the Olympic Oval when she claims she was repeatedly asked by strata president Michael Tse for her birth date.

According to documents published by the BC Human Rights Tribunal, a few weeks after finally giving in to Tse’s demands, Smith alleges she was asked to take a 35 per cent pay cut and a significant demotion.

Smith claims that - shortly after she indicated in late 2018 that she wouldn’t

And in January 2019, when the strata apparently hired a new permanent head concierge who “appeared to be decades younger,” Smith said she was asked to train that person.

In response to Smith’s claim of a breach of the Human Right’s Code regarding age discrimination, the strata and Tse explained that the strata decided to change property management companies and terminated its contract with FirstService Residential.

They also claimed it was really the property manager that employed Smith and not the strata itself, despite her claiming Tse was involved in the meeting where Smith was offered the reduced wages and demotion.

Canada Line users in Richmond will have to wait a little bit longer for their trains this spring.

Smith also provided emails to the tribunal, which appear to indicate that the strata, for the most part, was Smith’s employer.

The tribunal member presiding over the case, Pamela Murray, also noted that the strata and Tse had failed to address Smith’s claims that she was indeed employed by the strata or filed any evidence to the contrary.

And Murray added that the respondent (the strata and Tse) “need not be a complainant’s employer to be liable” under the Human Rights Code.

The strata and Tse had applied to have the complaint dismissed, but that application was rejected last week by tribunal member Murray.

The case and its allegations are still to be considered by the tribunal at a later date.

“To see that many youth nominated by their organizations just means that Richmond has a healthy future for volunteerism,” said Gavsie, adding that encouraging more youth to volunteer is a constant goal.

This is the level of respect Ed Gavsie, president of Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), has for the volunteers in his organization and the community.

“It’s very encouraging to me and to us in the volunteer sector to see that many youth being recognized alongside other outstanding volunteers.”

According to Gavsie, non-profit or charitable organizations depend “heavily” on volunteers to achieve their goals in the community.

He described volunteers as people who put in time and effort to support what they have a passion for.

“They’re not only spreading the message, but they’re also doing important work to allow the services to reach to residents most in need.”

With National Volunteer Week (April 24 to 30) just around the corner, RCRG is once again highlighting local volunteers who have shown extreme empathy, compassion and generosity to the community.

RCRG recognizes its volunteers through its annual Volunteers Are Awards program, which has been around for more than 20 years.

“Whether it’s a few hours a month or a few hours a week, every individual who makes an effort to volunteer is doing so for the benefit of their community.”

Having volunteered for more than 40 years in the community, Gavsie said it is gratitude that makes his work meaningful.

“To be able to interact with individuals, many of whom are in need, and to see the gratitude is one of the best parts about being a volunteer,” said Gavsie.

“Just to see the gratitude and (people) expressing their thanks has been a really tremendous reward for me … and it’s that one interaction with people that suddenly you know you have made an impact in their lives.”

50 Years of Connecting People and Services This year, Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) celebrates its 50th anniversary serving the community. In that time, a lot has changed at our organization. Our office has gone from a cloakroom at a local credit union, to our current home at the Richmond Caring Place. Our programs and services have expanded and evolved to meet the changing needs of Richmond residents. Even our name has gone through multiple iterations, to better reflect our mission and purpose.

One thing, however, has remained constant: our connection to volunteers.

Part of our role is to facilitate local volunteerism by helping Richmond residents find meaningful opportunities to support their community and the causes they care about. It’s given us a chance to work with many amazing non-profit organizations, and to see firsthand the impact that volunteers have on healthcare, the arts, social services, and countless other areas.

But at RCRG, we do more than build community capacity. We’re also a direct service provider, and rely on volunteers to run programs like our Child Care Resource & Referral Centre, the Richmond Christmas Fund, and our Seniors Community Support Services.

In the past year, 234 volunteers supported our organization, contributing nearly 10,300 hours. They helped lead early learning playgroups. During the holidays, they distributed toys and grocery vouchers to families in need. They shopped for groceries, too, filling thousands of orders for isolated seniors.

And that’s only a snapshot of a single year.

Volunteers have been the heart and soul of RCRG for five decades. And so, to each and every one of them, we offer our heartfelt gratitude. We’re proud to mark 50 years of connecting people and services. We’re prouder still to share that milestone with the volunteers who made it possible.

VOLUNTEERING CAN LIFT YOU UP TO PURSUE YOUR DREAMS For newcomers to Canada, volunteering can act as a springboard to help them adjust and thrive in their homes and lives.

That’s the message from Neena Suri, volunteer coordinator and settlement worker for the South Asian community at Richmond Multicultural Community Services (RMCS).

“Volunteering is a great way to explore your interests and passions,” she said.

“You quickly recognize how meaningful and interesting it is. Plus, it offers something away from your usual routines and allows you to make new and interesting friends.

“Volunteering is so rewarding. It can be an amazing platform to help improve your skills, and, along the way help someone else.”

For Siri, after moving in 1997 with her family to Canada from India where she was a teacher, she discovered while volunteering to help a group of refugee women through RMCS she was adept at counselling.

That led to her taking social services training and eventually working at RMCS, where she graduated to the position as volunteer coordinator.

At RMCS, there are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.

For example, volunteers work at the front desk as a receptionist, answering the phone and greeting visitors to the facility.

“They are students, retirees, and mothers who wanted to help and give back to their society,” Suri said.

Others lend their skills to help prepare free, tax returns for those new arrivals who are unfamiliar with the process.

“Most of those volunteers are CPAs, or simply people who want to help others,” Suri said.

There are also on-call, event volunteers to assist with after-hours functions.

At its core, volunteering in the immigrant population and helping someone in need is a positive step.

It’s something Suri points to from her own journey.

“As an immigrant I knew I had gone through so much hardship adapting to a new environment here in Canada,” she said. “And when I tell clients my story about going back to school in my 50s to ensure I had the right qualifications for my job, I think they are inspired to go out and pursue their dreams.

“Going above and beyond to help people achieve their goals, is what matters to me,” Suri added. “And I am grateful to be in a position to assist with that.”

But then it finally sunk in.

“I was returning to the Steveston office after a meeting and feeling down because COVID was once again disrupting our plans, but to get this kind of a phone call from Business in Vancouver was a huge boost to say the least,” said Golby.

Rose’s Angels shine on non-profits Alan Campbell

Ten charities in Richmond, which serve the most vulnerable in the city, have benefited from the 9th Annual Rose’s Angels event.

Cohen, co-founder of Rose’s Angels, and Lynne Fader, co-executive director of the Kehila Society Of Richmond, established their “passion project” together.

Volunteering is often a two-way street.

The volunteers lend their time to make an impact on those they help, and in return they get a true sense of satisfaction their efforts help make a difference.

Each Wednesday and Friday Strang, who has been a volunteer for the past three years, helps distribute donated food items from the community to about 130 families.

During February and March, donations poured in from family and friends of the organizers, as well as the wider community.

Rose’s Angels has been a large community event since 2012, donating more than 6,000 care packages, to date, in honour of Rose Lewin and Babs Cohen, Courtney Cohen’s grandmothers.

“It feels so good, so fulfilling because we know what we are doing is helping,” she said. “And without the efforts of the volunteers we wouldn’t be able to make this resource available to the community.

“Plus, I just love what the Salvation Army stands for - giving back hope to families who are struggling. And I am at a point in life where it helps me, as well.

“My kids are pretty much self-sufficient and I am able to give back and be involved with the community,” she said, adding that in years past she was grateful for the Salvation Army helping her.

With the cost of living soaring and many families struggling to make ends meet, Cohen and Fader decided to move this year’s individual care packages to primarily gift card donations to grocery/ drug stores.

“In life, you can face unexpected, difficult times, and the Salvation Army is here to be a resource in the community.”

“Receiving a gift card allows an individual to go independently and purchase what they require when they need it most,” Cohen told the Richmond News.

Despite the appearance that Richmond is an affluent community with seemingly little demand for services like the food hampers, Strang said there is an increasing need as more people are having trouble making ends meet.

“That’s what has driven me to help give back.

“There’s been a steady increase of families signing up for help,” she said, adding they are dedicated to serving everyone in need.

“It’s (emergency hamper program) meant for anyone who’s finding it tough. We never turn anyone away.”

The Lower Mainland Green Team and the City of Richmond partnered to hold an invasive species removal event.

Forty-one volunteers were pulling out Himalayan blackberries — even their stubborn roots — at Terra Nova Park on Sunday.

They managed to pull out eight cubic metres of the invasive plant, the equivalent of 50 bathtubs full.

The cleanup was organized by the Lower Mainland Green Team in partnership with the City of Richmond.

Another cleanup event will take place again this Saturday where volunteers can continue ridding the park of these invasive plants.

The majority of the volunteers — of whom 33 were Richmondites — at Sunday’s event were youth, but there were also people of all ages and experience levels, explained the Green Team’s Ashton Kerr.

She was especially pleased when the

group was able to get rid of dozens of stubborn roots from the dense, clay-like soil.

“By removing the roots, we are significantly reducing the chances of plant regrowth,” Kerr explained.

She pointed out, besides the obvious benefit to the environment, “participants themselves experienced many benefits by being out in nature with a group of committed people.”

They also got to meet new people, de-

velop a sense of belonging to the community and cultivate a “deeper respect for nature” as well as learning about climate change and “how it impacts local ecosystems and what they can do about it,” Kerr explained.

Fourteen-year-old Theresa Wang was at Terra Nova Park helping clear invasives this past weekend.

“This program not only supports people in getting involved in the community, but it also gives youth like me chances to learn new things and gain volunteer experience and hours,” she said.

The second cleanup event takes place this Saturday, April 23 from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Terra Nova Park.

Gloves, tools and refreshments will be provided again along with some instruction.

Volunteers don’t need to have any experience to take part.

VOLUNTEERS THE HEARTBEAT OF HOSPITAL AUXILIARY’S EFFORTS The heartbeat of a community is so often its volunteers.

So, it’s no surprise the “caring heart” of Richmond, its hospital, has a dedicated legion of those willing to lend their time to support it.

Founded in the 1960s from a collection of community groups that banded together, the Richmond Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary is a proud supporter of Richmond Hospital, and care homes at Minoru Residence and Lions Manor.

That help comes from funds raised at the auxiliary’s thrift shop in Steveston, gift shop and lottery ticket booth in Richmond Hospital, and tuck shop in Minoru Residence.

Powering those efforts are the auxiliary’s volunteers.

Currently, they number around 275, said auxiliary president Ursula Van Duin.

“Under normal circumstances, without a pandemic that we have experienced over the past two years, that number would likely be double,” she said.

Still, despite the effects of COVID-19, volunteers contributed around 35,000 work hours.

That resulted in a $194,000 donation to the hospital and care homes.

“That’s mostly nickels and dimes, and a lot of hard volunteer work to collect them,” Van Duin said. “In a regular day we could have as many as 500 customers come through the thrift store each day.”

Normally, the auxiliary’s annual contribution can reach as high as $300,000, a figure Van Duin hopes the auxiliary will return to as volunteer and thrift store customer numbers get back to normal.

Volunteer Week-Richmond Food Bank Volunteers help make an impact for those in need If you want a barometer to gauge the current state of your community just take a look at the length of its food bank lineup.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Richmond Food Bank Society executive director Hajira Hussain saw it stretch further than usual as the need for assistance grew dramatically.

But she also witnessed the resolve of her organization’s small army of volunteers, most them seniors, gain strength, even though their numbers had been blunted.

“Volunteers are the backbone of our operations,” Hussain said. “Virtually everything that happens here is a result of their efforts.

“And because of COVID-19 some decided to take a break. But those who continued, took up the challenge to help out and make a difference in their community.”

As the pandemic took hold, the food bank’s client numbers increased by around 49 per cent.

“That was the biggest jump we had ever seen,” Hussain said. “Before the pandemic we were averaging around 1,200 - 1,400 clients a week.

“Even now, with the pandemic’s impact lessened, we are still serving about 1,700 to 1,800 clients per week, which is reflective of a rise in costs for things like food and fuel prices that have a direct effect on the community and especially those who were already having difficulty making ends meet.”

While a growing need for assistance remains, thanks to the vaccination programs as well as the lifting of many pandemic restrictions, the food bank’s volunteer numbers are starting to come back.

“That’s a very positive sign,” Hussain said.

Currently, the food bank has around 250 volunteers who help with collecting, organizing, distributing food donations etc.

And they come from a wide background - from teenaged students to those into their senior years.

“Our oldest serving volunteer was 94 when she stopped volunteering before the pandemic hit,” Hussain said. And the experiences volunteering provides are profound.

“Our volunteers see the need first-hand, especially those who work on distribution,” It helps them overcome the myth that Richmond is a rich city almost nobody would need the help of a food bank.

“But when you see the lineup, it’s apparent the need is there, and you realize what you are doing as a volunteer actually makes a difference. And when you see a client’s gratitude.

A smile, a nod, or a thank you, it really makes your day.”

VOLUNTEER WEEK-GILMORE GARDENS RETIREMENT HOME A HUB FOR VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY

Gilmore Gardens may be referred to as a retirement residence but it’s also truly a hub for volunteer activity.

Just ask Sally Houston, an eight-year resident and president of the resident’s council who says she’s always delighted when one of her neighbours asks how they can offer their time to one of the many causes and activities in and outside the community in West Richmond. “When I hear that, I know they are comfortable here and have a kind heart” she said. Volunteering for Houston includes assisting newcomers to adjust to their new life at Gilmore Gardens.

“Here we have 115-plus residents who come with different interests from a variety of backgrounds and some need support when they first arrive. I like to help them feel welcome and settle in.”

“Volunteers mean a lot to us here” said Maureen Fakaro, Community Relations Manager at Gilmore Gardens. “We are so grateful for the many things they do. Some of our volunteers have been helping since we opened more than 22 years ago.”

The resident volunteers also respond to what’s going on in the world outside.

“Their compassionate and caring nature recently led them to hold an event called Perogies, Prayers and Pennies – a fundraiser to support people in the war-torn country of Ukraine,” Fakaro said.

Like the name suggested, perogies were on the menu that day, prayers were offered up for the safety of the Ukrainian people, and a booth was set up to raise money.

“In one and a half hours we had collected $1600 for the Red Cross,” Houston said.

At other times of the year, residents raise money for charitable efforts closer to home such as the Richmond Food Bank and Richmond Cares Richmond Gives.

Volunteers from outside Gilmore Gardens also lend a hand. For example, students from the community provide a support club to assist the residents with technology usage and some come and visit and work on crafts.

“We have a seniors community that loves to come together when things are needed. “Volunteering and connecting with others keeps the residents energized and living with purpose and desire to contribute and engage.”

Richmondite Balwant Sanghera, president of Indian Culture Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas on Richmond’s Highway to Heaven, was quite touched by a five-year-old girl last week.

Sanghera told the Richmond News that a donation table had been set up at the culture centre to support Ukrainian refugees whose lives have been turned upside down by the war.

A five-year-old girl approached the table and pulled out a dollar from her pocket and handed it over to the volunteers, Sanghera recalled.

“She told us she is very troubled by the destruction of Ukraine and wanted to help. What a beautiful gesture by this innocent, five-year-old child. She is a great inspiration for young and old alike to help more people,” said Sanghera.

Over $18,000 has been raised so far and the donation amount continues to climb, said Sanghera.

Poland has provided refuge to more than 2.4 million people fleeing Ukraine since Russia invaded at the end of February — and more are arriving every day.

Sanghera said there are Sikh temples in both Poland and war-ravaged Ukraine, and the Sikh temple in Poland provides food and accommodations to refugees.

“We are now exploring all opportunities to get in touch with the Sikh temple in Poland to transfer all of our donations to them,” said Sanghera. “We will continue to raise funds.”

Since the start of the war, there have been several fundraising efforts around Richmond to support the people of Ukraine.

This weekend, for example, Richmond communications personnel, Helen Yu, is hosting an online cooking class, with proceeds going to Ukraine.

Chef Charmaine Cheung, former host of a celebrity cooking show host, will be live-streaming a culinary lesson from a Richmond kitchen on making an authentic Japanese meal. Feedback and step-by-step instructions will be provided throughout the class.

The three-hour-long cooking class is $88 and includes fresh ingredients delivered to participants’ doors.

This isn’t Yu’s first online cooking class/ fundraiser.

When public health restrictions during the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic kept those from outside from entering The Maple Residences in Steveston, a solution to help keep the Maple’s community upbeat and vibrant was close at hand.

In fact, a group of volunteers, formed from residents at The Maples, helped keep the heartbeat of the independent living residents ticking over.

“They really jumped in to help and offer all of the different aspects of living at The Maples,” said Eileen Campbell, Assistant General Manager “It was a needs must situation.”

“They helped immensely, keeping spirits up, during this difficult time.”

Library Volunteers ensure the book collection is kept in order, and help with enquiries for specific topics that may be on the shelves.

For those with, or wanting to develop, a “green thumb,” help is offered by the gardening volunteers.

To help dress up the residence, there’s a volunteer decorating group.

“Whenever we have an event or party, the decorating committee has volunteers to assist with making things look great,” Campbell said. “And when we decorate here, we go big time.

During Volunteer Week, The Maples is holding a special tea to celebrate their collective efforts. Plus, gatherings are held a couple of other times through the year to welcome and recognize current and new volunteers.

“The efforts of the volunteers from our community were a huge morale booster.”

The volunteers at The Maples come from a wide variety of backgrounds - teachers, nurses, retail clerks, administrators and more. Each brings unique aspects and experiences to their volunteer roles.

Among them is a band of enthusiastic knitters who collectively produced a variety of sweaters, scarves and more, that are sold in the tuck shop at The Maples.

With the donated wool, the volunteer time put in to make the goods, the entire proceeds from the sales go to Jeremy’s Memorial Foundation, for women and children affected by domestic violence.

Since the group’s inception 10 years ago, they have raised more than $10,000 for the cause.

There’s also a volunteer Welcome Committee whose role is to help new residents transition to their new home.

“They help provide a nice, happy face to greet them and help get them acquainted in their new community,” Campbell said.

“They (volunteers) did so much for us during the pandemic that it’s nice to recognize and celebrate their efforts,” Campbell said. “The volunteers always deserve a thank-you, but they need a bigger thank you now, as they’ve stepped up to help ensure their community thrives - newcomers are made it feel at home, the gardens look great and donations are made to charities.”

Three days of heavy rain, pumps working at almost 80 per cent capacity and 1,300 calls — about 600 simultaneously — pouring into the city during November’s “atmospheric river” had Richmond staff reviewing their response to the 50-year weather event.

A city staff report notes that Richmond’s flood response as well as its infrastructure held up well — especially compared to other communities that had extensive flooding.

Regardless, a few key deficiencies were highlighted.

This included a breakdown in communication with regional authorities,

not enough calltakers to handle local emergencies and older infrastructure in the Horseshoe area that couldn’t handle the water despite a recently upgraded pump station.

And a significant weak point was identified that could cause major response problems in the future, namely the fact the city’s worksyard is located below the floodplain.

The worksyard has almost 68,000 litres of gasoline, diesel and propane in underground tanks, and the report noted if they were infiltrated by water during a major event, it could hinder the city’s emergency response.

Worksyards in some communities were flooded during November’s storm, staff note.

While some communities in the Fraser

Valley were devastated by the water, such as Abbotsford, most areas of Richmond were not flooded.

But the notable exception was the Horseshoe neighbourhood, between Steveston Highway and Williams Road and No. 4 and 5 roads.

The Horseshoe Slough Drainage Pump was upgraded in 2018, but the November rain showed that parts of the pipes, box culverts and drainage canals leading to the pump station couldn’t handle the 138 mm of rain that came over three days, and subsequently flooded into some private properties in the Seacote area.

They also note that property owners whose homes are below the floodplain level need to be educated on flood prevention.

Fire chief calls it a 36-year career

Almost 36 years have passed since Tim Wilkinson first donned a firefighter’s helmet and jumped into a fire truck

at Brighouse Firehall No. 1, en route to his first call.

Standing in almost the exact same spot today — the new firehall opened a few years ago — the Richmond Fire-Rescue chief is about to call it a career.

But don’t be fooled for thinking that the 63-yearold, Steveston-raised Wilkinson has been gathering moss all those years.

Tim Wilkinson On the contrary, the departing fire chief is leaving behind a storied service to the department, its firefighters and the community at large.

Not only did he do his fair share of saving lives and putting out countless fires, he played a major role in a team that successfully lobbied government to recognize a presumptive cancer diagnosis in firefighters — as well as securing the land to build the Burn Fund building — all while rising through the ranks as union president, captain, battalion chief and deputy chief to where he is now.

“It was a special time and a special team,” Wilkinson told the Richmond News, while reflecting on some of his achievements over the decades.

“That’s what I’ll remember the most; being a part of a team. The teamwork in Richmond is incredible.

“I really enjoy helping people, but you can’t do that alone.”

Asked what incident sticks out the most during his career, Wilkinson steered away from the obvious — such as 9/11 and multiple tragic, fatal plane crashes and, more recently, the huge blaze that consumed the DND Lands.

“It’s not so much large fires, but smaller events, where we were able to help a family, where there has been a loss of life, where you can maybe make a terrible situation a little better,” said Wilkinson.

“Those are the ones that some firefighters struggle with and then, later on, being able to help other firefighters get through it. The fires are adrenalin events and you do your best to limit the damage, of course, but it’s the ones with close contact with people that I recall the most.”

Indeed, Wilkinson remembers clearly his first shout as a Richmond firefighter back in 1986.

“My first call was a medical event. The training back then wasn’t as specific as it is now,” explained the out-going fire chief, who spent the first 10 years of his working life as a plumber, all across B.C, before some rugby friends recommended a career in the fire department.

“I wasn’t as proficient then as I am now and it was quite overwhelming at one point seeing the paramedics at work.”

As for his first actual fire, it “wasn’t particularly large or exciting. It was a house fire.

“I got shepherded through it by a great team. We went inside...and were able to extinguish it easily. I learned a lot that day. You need a good start to be successful in this career and I was lucky enough to have that and have a great team to show me the ropes.”

“Our aim is to help mitigate our region’s loss of biodiversity and extinction of species through restoration of habitat,” explained Sharon MacGougan, president of the Garden City Conservation Society. “It’s a small step but one that will be of immense value to our birds, insects and other wildlife.

We hope to inspire and support more pocket forests in the region based on our experience.”

A dense crescent-shaped “pocket forest” will soon start growing at Richmond Secondary, enveloping the school’s outdoor learning space.

This Friday, the school will celebrate Earth Day by starting to plant trees in the first-in-B.C. Miyawaki pocket forest, which is meant to create a cool space when it’s hot out, provide protection in inclement weather and add to biodiversity.

Richmond Secondary Green Team member Harry Peng said he hopes the pocket forest will be an “escape from suburbia” and be used by the entire community.

The climate change crisis — as seen by last year’s heat dome and atmospheric river — is “worrying” for Peng, especially as it will affect his generation.

If students grow up in a sustainable school, hopefully, they will make sustainable choices in their lives, Kao added.

“Our goal is to spread as much awareness in the world about how we can make sustainable choices,” Kao added.

The school has been working with its artist-in-resident Jay Peachy to create seven learner tables for the outdoor space which will be surrounded by the pocket forest.

Students have been etching artwork onto the tables, many focused on Indigenous messages.

The launch of the Miyawaki forest will be held on Earth Day, Friday, April 22 at 3:15 p.m. at Richmond Secondary and the community is invited to attend the event.

It will include live performances, snacks and activities for all ages.

The east side of the lot is covered in bogs, and the city is proposing to build raised wooden boardwalks for walking through the bog without disturbing the “ecologically sensitive” area. Besides, it’s expected the area will be covered in water throughout the year, making it unsuitable for ground pathways.

With a long history of various uses, the city is currently doing soil studies to see if there’s any residual contamination on the Garden City Lands.

Just a few weeks after opening up 200 garden plots at the 136-acre site in Richmond’s City Centre, city staff are asking council to endorse an application to the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) to add these features, allowing more public access.

The site was used as a shooting range early in the last century. Furthermore, there used to be underground fuel tanks for transmission towers on the Garden City Lands.

Icebreaker breaks record

It survived two postponements due to COVID-19, but still broke records for the number of participants.

The slightly delayed 2022 Steveston Icebreaker finally went ahead last weekend, attracting a record number of runners in both the adults 8K and kids 1K events along the boardwalk.

The event also saw new highs for fundraising and the Kajaks Track and Field Club will be donating nearly $4,000 to KidSport Richmond as a result, which will help kids in Richmond participate in sports this year.

The 2022 Icebreaker introduced a new and faster course with a fun finish line zone that hundreds got to enjoy after the race.

There was also a kids zone full of activities, complimentary massages, healthy snacks and drinks, music, finisher ribbons, medals and a chance to have your photo taken with Richmond’s own Evan Dunfee and his 2020 Olympic bronze medal.

Connaught skater David Li snatched the gold medal in Italy’s figure skating competition earlier this month.

Li, 15, competed in the men’s novice event at the Egna Spring Trophy Figure Skating Competition and scored a total score of 126.82 points in the free skate short program.

The Magee secondary student said he was pretty happy with his performance.

“I felt pretty confident in my routine and I performed well,” said Li. “I wasn’t used to travelling outside Canada for competitions, but it was a great experience.

Li told the Richmond News that he has been skating since he was 10 years old and enjoys the feeling of performing for others on the ice.

Keegan Murphy, director of skating programs at Connaught Skating Club, describes Li as one of the “hardest working athletes” the club has seen in Richmond.

“The international judges recognized his special qualities and rewarded him accordingly,” said Murphy.

“The entire Connaught Skating Club could not be more proud of him. He is very deserving.”

Meanwhile, Connaught skater Wesley Chiu competed in the men’s ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Estonia this past week.

Chiu placed second in his short program with a score of 81.59 points last Thursday.

However, a fall on his quad toe loop on his free skate program dropped his standing to fourth place with a total of 228.29 points.

Plenty of ‘special’ dishes to pick from no matter the day of the week Are you someone who is keen to see what’s on “special” when you’re dining out?

At many restaurants, dishes are rotated on special based on different days of the week. This is not always convenient and may mean you have to miss out not only on something you enjoy eating, but the value a daily special delivers.

Their roster of daily specials givves you a variety to pick from during lunch, and a choice of two dishes for diinner that change each day.

“Variety and value are the keyworrds to best describe what is being served,” says L.A. Grill’s Steve Chan, adding there arre eight diff ffeerent meals on the lunch special menu u served d weekdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m m.

“All of the lunch special meals are the regular portion size,” adds Chaan. “And d all aree made with the top quality ingredients we pride ourselvves on using in n alll off our meals.”

While th here are eight lunch specials to select from, Chan says on ne stands out as a favourite with customerrs - chicken souvlaki, which comes with h ricce, potaatoes, caesar salad, pita bread and tzatziiki.

“The chicken is very tender, flavourful, and when you add in a drink for around $3, your total bill is competitive with any fast-food location,” he says.

“And you get a proper, sit-down restaurant setting to enjoy your meal.”

Aside from the souvlaki, L.A. Grill’s lunch specials include chicken strips or a cheeseburger served with caesar salad and potatoes, soup and BLT sandwich, soup and caesar salad, plus pasta dishes that include fettuccine alfredo, curry penne and spicy tomato o linguinii which all come with garlic toast.

As for dinner sp peciaals, on Mondayys you can order a six-ounce New York steak with ricee, greeen salad an nd garlic toast is just $12 - again, with the purchase of a beverag ge.

For $1 16, you caan also en njoy souvllaki and garlic prawn ns.

On n Tueesdays garllic praw wns ($12) and salmon and prawnss ($16) are on the list.
