They’ve Readers weigh in on racism got junk Dear Editor,

Dear Editor, There is a junkyard operating on the street in Agassiz Court, with junk coming and going daily in overflowing trucks. Repeated compaints by neighbours to bylaws have been investigated, fines have been levied, but the business continues to operate daily. This is a very quiet residential street. The junkyard is dangerous, dirty and unsafe, as

Odd that Richmond MLA Teresa Wat says she “hope(s) the NDP government puts aside the politics right now” in her call for an antiracism education day, since playing politics is exactly what she is doing. well as illegal and unsightly. The City of Richmond is not doing its job in regulating this activity.

March 21 is already the International Day for the Elimination of Racism and it launches the Week of Solidarity with the Peoples Struggling against Racism and Racial Discrimination — both already recognized by the B.C. government. The NDP also restored the human rights commission her own party did away with. Any efforts to fight racism are worthwhile and urgent, but Wat needn’t use the opportunity to score political points against David Eby and the NDP government.

Re: “Don’t applaud Trump,” Letters, April 15.

Once again, as a former post-secondary educator who was concerned with the way language is used, I need to point out the terms “race” and “ethnicity” continue to be inappropriately conflated, as with Douglas Ng’s letter. Our “race” refers to our belonging to one of the four racial groups in the world with the physical characteristics that are attendant to each. Our “ethnicity” refers to our belonging to a social group which shares common cultural traditions — therefore there can

Dear Editor, I read all the letters in your last issue. My question is: why is

The reason it is important to be precise in the use of language...(is because) the more ambiguity, the more difficult it becomes to find agreements and solve problems.

To be a racist and to be prejudiced against ethnic groups are two different things, and it is important that we separate the two if we are concerned with achieving greater understanding of, and greater capacity to solve the various social problems we face.

Surrey farce Strangers’ help renews should be lesson faith in humanity Dear Editor, Like most folks I have been watching Surrey’s transition from RCMP to a municipal police department. It has been like watching a car crash in slow motion. Many of the Surrey mayor’s supporters have abandoned him, lawn signs have appeared pleading with the mayor to keep the RCMP. The transition budget has jumped from $49 million to $64 million. That does not include the new storage and training facility that will be needed. That’s okay because this year the taxes in Surrey are increasing 2.9 per cent with a $200 per household levy.

My friends in Surrey have complained that other community programs have seen budget cuts. As far as accountability we have seen Police Board members with “interesting” backgrounds appointed and they have already had one board member resign. It seems like only five years ago there was strong support from certain Richmond councillors to start a Richmond Police Force. With this upcoming byelection in Richmond, we may see election results that will bring the idea back to council chambers and that could put Richmond hand in hand with Surrey and all their current financial issues.

Dear Editor,

pain and shock.

I hope that this letter will reach the attention of two wonderful Samaritans of kindness and caring that came to my assistance on Tuesday, April 13. I’m a senior female and was walking on right sidewalk of No. 3 Road to attend a denturist appointment on Cook Street. My toe caught on a raised paving stone (many of them following winter wet season and multiple building projects) and I took an unplanned flight that did not require pre testing COVID-19 clearance to board, landed very hard face down with right arm and shoulder taking most of the impact and was unable to move due to

A gentleman (literally) came to my assistance and soon after a female passing by stopped to assist. They were so caring and called an ambulance as I was unable to move and remained with me until it arrived. I was attended to and transported to emergency at Richmond Hospital. They were all very caring in the required attention that was needed and apparent in every department involved. I want to thank everybody that contributed especially the two who came to my assistance on No. 3 Road as they were dismissed from the scene without any thanks or show of my gratitude.

To me personally from this entire experience I am encouraged to know and feel that, in spite of present pandemic situation and mandates, there is still the “human element” in existence of love, compassion, respect and caring for each other. This experience renewed my faith in human instincts and gives me hope that we can all learn to be kind to each other again and move forward and not forget but learn what unhealthy “fear” can affect our own instincts and community. Together we stand, divided we fall. Love always and live in hope.

The province is asking all residents aged 18 and older to register for their COVID-19 vaccine this week — although it will likely still be weeks before they get the jab. On Thursday at noon, people aged 25-plus can register in B.C.’s Get Vaccinated program, while people aged 18 and up can register as of noon on Friday. Registering in the system is the first step. Residents will be contacted about booking an appointment

— receiving either Pfizer or Moderna — once their age group is eligible. Currently, the province is booking those aged 63 and older for appointments, as well as Indigenous people aged 18 and older and people who are clinically extremely vulnerable. However, the focus for the next two to three weeks is vaccinating those 65-plus, according to Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry. She said on Monday that B.C. is on track to give everyone dose one by July 1.

London Drugs said most of its locations are also awaiting supply and now have a waitlist. New travel rules New travel orders are expected to be announced on Friday. On Monday, Premier John Horgan said B.C. would be implementing “random audits” similar CounterAttack during Christmas to limit people from travelling outside of their health authority.

People aged 40 and older can now opt to get that vaccine at some local pharmacies, but means navigating the booking system set up by each participating pharmacy.

However, Minister of Public Safety Mike Farnworth has since clarified that VCH and Fraser Health will be treated as one health authority. He said B.C. is looking at using roadblocks at ferry terminals or heading into the Interior. There will be no random, individual stops, and the intention is to discourage recreational travel, not “disrupting commuters and people going about their lives.”

Cecille Chui, pharmacist at Steveston’s Super Grocer, said she has been inundated with calls from people wanting the AZ vaccine, but she has run out of supply because she was only made aware of the change in eligibility on Monday, like everyone else.

B.C. is working with the tourism industry to cancel bookings and not accept new ones from people living outside of their destination. BC Ferries will also not accept bookings for travellers with recreational vehicles such as campers or add additional sailings for the May long weekend.

“It would be good if they’d tell us before they make the announcement, so we can prepare,” she added.

YWCA moves into Richmond Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Twenty-seven affordable rental homes in the heart of the city will be available in November for single mothers, women fleeing abuse and women over the age of 55. The YWCA has been looking for an opportunity to create housing for women in Richmond for a long time and the new Keltic Development, just steps away from the Brighouse Canada Line Station, offered that opportunity, explained Lisa Rupert, director of housing and violence prevention with the YWCA. Fourteen of the units are meant for single mothers and their children, and the rest will be for either single women 55 years and older or women who are leaving abusive relationships. This is the first YWCA project in Richmond, which is “so in need of affordable housing,” Rupert said. She is particularly happy about the central location by the

Canada Line station.

“That is our commitment always for housing we’re building in communities — that we are prioritizing people who already live, work and go to school in those communities,” Rupert said.

“I can’t think of a better location for people who can’t afford a car (and) who need mobility,” she added. Not only will single mothers and their children get stable housing, there will be units available for women leaving abusive relationships.

Given the high cost of rental in Metro Vancouver, the lack of affordable housing is forcing single parents to live farther and farther away, exacerbating commute times and costs, Rupert explained.

The YWCA has a long history of working with women fleeing abuse, Rupert explained. In 1979, they opened the first second-stage housing for women who’d experienced domestic violence in Canada. When housing isn’t available to women leaving a violent relationship, they often have no choice but to go back to their abusive partners, Rupert explained. “(Housing) is key to them being able to leave — and for their children not to witness or experience violence and being able to grow up in a healthy situation and then, in turn, be healthy in their own relationships,” Rupert said. Richmond is in the top 10 least affordable

Hate incidents are not crimes Valerie Leung

VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

While “hate has no place in our community,” according to the Richmond RCMP, “hate crimes” are not the same as “hate incidents.” Cpl. Ian Henderson, spokesman for the detachment, endeavoured to distinguish the two amidst a recent spate of racially motivated incidents and calls on police to do more. In March, a total of seven incidents involving apparent “racial undertones” were reported to Richmond police. However, four of them did not involve a criminal offence, so are not considered hate crimes, according to the local detachment. Instead, Henderson referred to them as “hate incidents.” “There are specific hate offences in the Criminal Code which include pro-

moting genocide and inciting hatred, which includes the distribution of hate propaganda, but most of the incidents being reported to police are not hate crimes,” Henderson explained.

However, he noted, “When a person makes a racist, homophobic or other abhorrent comment to a stranger, it is not a criminal offence, and typically police are unable to pursue a criminal investigation much further.” That said, three incidences, which are still under investigation, are allegedly hate-motivated and involve a form of criminal offence. One incident involved allegations of an anti-Semitic text exchange between students at a local school and is being dealt with under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. A second incident involved allegations of racial slurs and an assault on an Asian café manager in Steveston where an arrest was made and an investigation is ongoing.

City of Richmond

Lastly, a man was allegedly yelling racial slurs before crossing a street and punching a South Asian man who was sitting at a bus stop. The suspect has not been identified yet, and police believe it was a random attack. Both “hate crimes” and “hate incidents,” said the RCMP, have a negative impact on the community and investigations into the incidents will be “receiving the fullest attention and oversight.” Officers have been updated on their training guidelines for hate-related investigations and continue to encourage victims to speak out. “In order for police to deal effectively with hate crimes and hate incidents, we need to know when they happen,” said Henderson, adding victims should be contacting the police before posting videos online. RCMP added each case is being reviewed to see if mental health factors are involved.

$3.5M of cocaine seized The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has seized 64 bricks of suspected cocaine from a tractor-trailer carrying personal care products. According to the CBSA, a commercial driver entered Canada in a tractor-trailer and, during the secondary examination, border services officers “noticed anomalies.” The officers unloaded the trailer and found a total of 64 individually wrapped brickshaped objects. They tested the contents, which returned positive for suspected cocaine. The bricks had a combined weight of 71.5 kilograms (nearly 160 pounds) with an estimated value of over $3.5 million. The CBSA’s Pacific Region Intelligence Section was engaged and worked with the RCMP’s Federal Serious and Organized Crime (FSOC) unit on the cross-border smuggling attempt investigation. The RCMP then took custody of the driver and the drugs. —Alan Campbell/Richmond News

Advocate gets death threats Budget missing Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A member of a Chinese-Canadian human rights advocacy group said they received death threats after issuing an open letter to Premier John Horgan asking him to remove an adviser from B.C.’s Chinese-Canadian Community Advisory Committee. Concern Group of Chinese Canadians on CCP Human Rights Violation sent two letters to Horgan’s office to ask the premier to remove Bill Yee, a retired judge and former Vancouver city councillor, from a provincial advisory committee after Yee told a Chinese-language radio host that Canada’s accusations of Uyghur genocide in China are “lies.” On April 11, after the letters were sent, a group member received a series of text messages

and phone calls from an unknown caller with one text that reads “Wanna kill you. I am going to kill you,” according to group spokesperson Thekla Lit.

“In Canada we should allow no place for any death threats, especially against those...advocating for human rights and social justice,” Lit added. During an interview with a Toronto radio station, Yee said the Canadian Parliament’s vote to pass a motion declaring the treatment of Uyghur people in China a genocide was not based on facts and was done for ulterior motives. According to a statement from B.C.’s Minister of State for Trade’s office, Yee will not be seeking reappointment to the committee. However, Lit added that her group’s concern is not just with one individual’s safety, but also the possibility the threat is “part of a larger foreign operation to sup-

press voices critical of a foreign regime on Canadian soil.” Meanwhile, Richmondite Ivan Pak agrees that while there is no place for death threats, he opposes calling out Yee over his Uyghur comments. Pak launched an online petition calling on people to support Yee’s freedom of speech, which has collected over 1,000 signatures as of Wednesday, April 21.

“We respect everyone’s right to express their thoughts freely without interference even if I don’t agree with what they said and their speech might sound offensive and nasty,” said Pak. Lit said they do respect Yee’s rights to speak, however, ”we have great concern about a Chinese Communist Party defender and genocide denier being appointed as the co-chair on the Chinese Canadian Community Advisory Committee.”

Wat said when she was in government in 2013-2017, she pushed for a concept plan for a new acute care tower, and she was happy that the NDP “put politics aside” and continued with the project. Investment duo coach client to lie: BCSC

A marketing director and colleague at a Richmond-based investment firm have been fined a total of $70,000 after they coached a client to lie to a financial watchdog investigator. The British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC) fined FS Financial Strategies’ (FS) director “Janet” Zhang $40,000 and strategist Hunter Wei-Shun Wang $30,000 for obstructing justice by concealing or withholding, or attempting to conceal or withhold, information that was “reasonably

required for an investigation under the Securities Act.” In December 2020, a BCSC panel heard how Zhang and Wang spent time with the client role-playing the lies, with Wang pretending to be a BCSC investigator during a mock phone call. After rehearsing the call repeatedly, Wang and Zhang listened in while the investor called the investigator and read the script with the false story. The panel found that “this fab-

rication was clearly an attempt to cause the investigator to stop pursuing investigation of the complaint.” After the call, the investor and his mother went with Zhang to her personal bank, where she withdrew $25,000 and gave it to the investor. A few weeks later, FS reimbursed Zhang for that payment. Their connection dated back to 2014, when Zhang introduced a B.C. man to an investment at FS and Wang assisted her in the

process of documenting the investment. The investor initially put in $25,000 on the premise that he would be guaranteed a 10-percent return for three years, risk free. However, he asked for his money back a few days later, saying he regretted making the investment. While waiting for a response, the investor’s mother complained to the BCSC about the investment. In addition to the fines, Zhang

is prohibited for three years and Wang is prohibited for two years from: • being a director or officer of any issuer or registrant • being or acting as a registrant or promoter • acting in a management or consultative capacity in connection with the securities market • and engaging in promotional activities. —Alan Campbell/News

Farm school doubles Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Kwantlen Polytechnic’s Richmond Farm School students are working the land again this spring after a year’s hiatus because of the pandemic. And this year, there are twice as many students learning to be farmers than in previous years. KPU decided to double the number of students in the eight-month program that has been running for 11 years — except in 2020 — after seeing its waitlist explode this year. And not only has the number of students doubled, the land they are farming this year is more than five times larger, with three acres under production. With the program about one month in, Daniel Garfinkel, who runs the farm school, said this year’s crop of students are becoming less “city awkward” and are starting to get used to getting their hands dirty.

Courses include seed saving, soil science and pest management, cut flower production — and this year, they’re taking a course in farm construction for the first time. The students will be working with a red seal carpenter to build a harvest table and washing stations.

Richmond farmer Kareno Hawbolt of Sweet Digz Farm in Steveston is also teaching market crop production as well as acting as a mentor to the up-and-coming farmers. “Our goal is to give them the most holistic, realistic sense of farming and we want them to have a plethora of broad skills,” Garfinkel said. “As a small-scale farmer, you don’t often have the finance options to hire a soil scientist or a pest management specialist — so you do have to wear many, many hats.” Garfinkel said the pandemic has re-emphasized the need for local food, and Richmond, with its “absolutely outstanding soil” is an ideal location to grow local food. “We have such an opportunity to do that in Richmond — to really

connect local residents to local food sources, to local farmers, and growing the food in Richmond, selling it in Richmond and eating it in Richmond,” he said. But there seems to be a disconnect between many Richmond residents and businesses and the farming community, said Garfinkel.

This was brought home to him recently when he tried to find a tractor part that needed replacing. After having no success at Richmond businesses such as Lordco and Home Depot, he was told to go to Chilliwack — where there’s farming. In the end he found the part in Langley. However, the biggest challenge for farmers is securing land, given that the Lower Mainland is one of the most expensive places to live and the cost of land prohibitive for starting farmers. “You have to sell a lot of carrots to think about buying land,” Garfinkel said. Most farmers are just “scraping by,” he added.

Farmers market back in business Kirsten Clarke KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market is set to make its return in May — barring any new restrictions — after being sidelined for a year by COVID-19. “We’ve had a year to think about it now…how we envisioned the market to look for this year in an adaptive state, and still have the same sort of vibrant market that we’ve had in past years,” said Pinky Camaclang, market coordinator. “It’s a lot of hard work, but to be able to see everybody again and to give them hope that there’s something exciting to look forward to — it’s a lot of fun.” The Steveston Farmers Market Committee unanimously voted last year to cancel the market as the first wave of the pandemic hit B.C., just a few weeks before it was set to open. “I believe it was a hardship for a lot of our vendors who depend on markets for their income,” said Alan Sakai, committee chair. The market will be operating with fewer vendors this year — between 25 and 40, depending on the day, according to Sakai. “We won’t have as many vegetable vendors this year, because they’re struggling to get help…So we’ve had to adapt that way as well.” However, people can still expect to see a mix of locally crafted and grown products. On Mother’s Day, for example, the market will feature vendors selling flowers, baskets and bedding plants. Meanwhile, fruit will arrive later in the season. The committee has been working with the City of Richmond to make sure all provincial government and city health protocols are being followed. “We’re really nervous about how we’re going to do this,” Sakai said. “We don’t want to become the centre of an outbreak or anything.” Vendors will be physically distanced, and distancing rules will also be in effect for volunteers and patrons. The market will be open on May 9 and 23, June 6 and 20, July 4 and 18, August 1, 15 and 29 and Sept. 5. It will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the Easthope parking lot across from the Steveston Community Centre.

Changes to the food truck bylaw — supported unanimously by council at Monday’s committee meeting — include a requirement to be 100 metres from any other restaurant in Steveston.

MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Two food trucks in Steveston could have their business licences cancelled following several complaints from the public. Salty’s Lobster Shack and Shameless Buns Inc. will, however, be allowed to argue their case at a Richmond city council meeting if the city goes ahead with a business licence cancellation.

When asked by Coun. Chak Au why these changes are only being considered in Steveston, Williams said the food trucks tend to complement other services in other areas of the city, for example, in industrial parks where they benefit workers in the area and in malls during peak times. A survey about Steveston food trucks has received 565 responses. Eighty-two per cent said food trucks should be subject to regulations while 55 per cent said they should be located away from brick-and-mortar restaurants in Steveston.

Larry is the main caregiver for Marilyn, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2012, and both have been supported through the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s resources, reads the society’s media statement.

According to Barbara Lindsay, Interim CEO of the Alzheimer Society of B.C., the COVID-19 pandemic has brought challenges especially to people living with dementia and their care partners.

The Whites believe in being open about conversations surrounding dementia especially across their social circle, explains the society.

City mulling more accessible parking in Steveston Steveston may become more accessible for people in wheelchairs if the city adds more “van accessible” parking spaces. The City of Richmond is considering adding three of these parking spaces to Steveston Village. Van accessible parking spaces are wider than standard accessible parking spaces, in order to accommodate sideloading vans for people in wheelchairs. In a report to the public works and transportation committee, city staff propose repainting the lines of two on-street accessible spots to fit a van as well as creating a van accessible spot in the city-owned public parking lot, all on First Avenue. Repainting the pavement markings and

adding signage for these spots would cost the city $3,700. Currently, there are 33 accessible parking spaces in Steveston Village — including eight on-street spots, one public off-street and 24 in private off-street lots, such as pay parking lots or lots reserved for customers of an establishment. Only two of the 24 private spots are van accessible, and are located in the SaveOn Foods lot. If approved by the city, staff aims to create the van accessible spots by summer. The city will also look at concerns about faded markings and signage in privately owned parking lots. —Kirsten Clarke/Richmond News

Olympian bids for treadmill record His actual 10K record out on the street — a Canadian record, as it happens — is 38:54 (3:53 per kilometre pace).

Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Richmond’s Olympic racewalker Evan Dunfee is using a fun 10K treadmill world record attempt as part of his preparation for the Olympics.

As the pandemic continues to cause chaos around the world, Richmond’s racewalking Olympian Evan Dunfee is still training and preparing for Tokyo 2020 — and that includes a world record 10K attempt on a treadmill this weekend. Dunfee — best known for incredible sportsmanship when giving up a potential bronze medal at the Rio Olympics 2016 — is still hoping to get vaccinated in time for this year’s re-arranged Games in August. The 30-year-old told the Richmond News earlier this spring that he would refuse any COVID-19 vaccine offered to Olympic athletes ahead of their “turn” in the national and provincial roll-out, a move that had been requested of governments by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). And Dunfee said he’s still standing by that assertion, as he gets ready for a tilt this Saturday at the Olympic Oval to racewalk 10 kilometres on a treadmill to inject some fun into Team Canada’s Olympic preparations. “The Games are still going ahead it would seem, but we still haven’t had any information on what those last

few weeks before it will look like,” Dunfee told the News on Tuesday. “I’m training as if I’m going. If the Games are on, I will be there. “It’s looking like I will be able to get my first (vaccine) shot in June. I’m optimistic my number will come up in due course.” Dunfee said Saturday’s official attempt at recording a treadmill 10K record (although, admittedly, it’s never been tried before) will be carried out via video link in front of Canadian racewalking judges, to make sure he’s sticking by the rules of his sport.

“Probably not (going to beat that). I’m not in the shape that I would have been in for that record. My goal is to get in under 40 minutes,” added Dunfee, whose specialty in the Olympics is the mammoth 50-kilometre race. The world record attempt will be shown live via Youtube on the day. Watch for the link and updates via Canadian Racewalking social media links (@CRacewalking on Twitter and @CanadianRacewalking on Instagram) or via the Virtual Event website. Racewalkers must ensure their feet do not lose contact with the ground, as visible to the human eye, as they make contact with the heel of one foot and push off with the toe of the other foot. The second rule requires that the supporting leg must straighten from the point of contact with the ground and remain straightened until the body passes directly over it. Judges can warn or disqualify a walker for not adhering to these rules. In the 1860-1880s, competitive walking, called ‘pedestrianism,’ was the most popular sport in North America and led to what is now called racewalking.

ANDERSON, Maurie C. November 29, 1955 − March 25, 2020 You’ve been gone a year. A year since we last heard your voice, touched you, looked in your eyes. A year since you made us laugh over shared memories of good times. A year since our conversations about existence, mortality and creation. We never reached a consensus on those matters but you definitely gave us a lot to think about. You were born at Burnaby General Hospital to Morris and Patricia Anderson and had an idyllic childhood spent along the tranquil beaches and shores of Vancouver Bay, a remote B.C. Forest Products logging camp up Jervis Inlet near the northern tip of the Sunshine Coast. Here, you experienced all that a rural, self-sufficient upbringing had to offer - including a close-call with a family of black bears that ended only when Dad intervened and you were quickly and quietly ushered from the scene. You moved to the Lower Mainland when you were eight, settling in Coquitlam and attending Austin Heights Elementary, Como Lake and Centennial high schools. You tolerated the academic side of school and your rear end was no stranger to the strap, but you excelled as a student athlete, with baseball a favourite sport. As an adult, you were a free spirit. Your earliest jobs took you to Quesnel and Calgary for a time, then back to the Lower Mainland for work at an appliance warehouse in Richmond and finally to the Coquitlam School District, where you worked for more than 25 years in the custodial, grounds and transportation departments. You had a sense of social justice and in 1983, you joined a few dozen other concerned citizens who occupied then-Premier Bill Bennett’s Vancouver office to demonstrate their opposition to Bennett’s severe restraint policies. Your parents were proud of you taking your seat on the floor of Bennett’s office in solidarity with workers. In the mid-’90s, you scared us all when you were in a horrific car accident. You were lucky to have survived; the accident left you with a rebuilt jaw and a permanent scar on your chin. The scar only added to your rugged good looks and you had no trouble in the romance department, even well into your retirement from the Coquitlam School District in 2012. In your retirement, you fulfilled your lifelong dream to return to the water and moved into a boat on the Fraser River, the Mr. Wiggly. When you weren’t enjoying life on Mr. Wiggly at Shelter Island Marina, you spent it with your mom, helping her maintain her independence for longer than she would have otherwise. As often happens when someone passes, people come forward to share their memories and offer comfort to those left behind. We’ve learned that you were a good neighbour, a loyal friend, a pontificating philosopher and the love of someone’s life. They’ve also confirmed what we’ve always known - that you were never one to pay any heed to conventional wisdom or societal expectations. You danced to your own tune, which often meant exploring non-traditional viewpoints on life, death and existence itself. You had an abiding belief in the other-worldly, and we hope you are correct in your assertions, and that you’re up in that peaceful, faraway place in the stars, looking through space at all of us, laughing, shaking your head in satisfaction and muttering, “I told you so.”

HANCE, Reid William May 14, 1974 - April 14, 2021

HENNING, Aino (Uus) February 13, 1936 - April 13, 2021

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Reid William Hance on April 14, 2021.

The Russian occupation of Estonia during WWII caused the family to flee in darkness across the Baltic Sea to Sweden. After several years in Sweden, the family emigrated to Canada and settled in Vancouver. Aino graduated from Britannia High School, got married and worked at “The Bay” in Richmond for 25 years.

Reid is survived by his loving wife Melissa and his beloved sons Liam and Luke, along with his extended family and many friends. Reid was predeceased by his mother Candace Reid and his father Peter Hance. Reid was a dedicated employee with Air Canada for 15 years and has spent the last 10 years with Exclusive Floors. Reid was a devoted father who coached his boys in all of their sporting activities. Reid’s passion for the outdoors was heavily influenced by his fatherin-law Ray which resulted in a life long bond.

Aino is survived by her husband of 65 years, Doug and three daughters, Denise (Ernie), Darlene (Harry), and Debbie (Terry). Four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren completes Aino’s family circle.

Condolences and tributes may be sent to the family by visiting www.mountpleasantfuneral.com Mount Pleasant Universal Funeral Home 604-876-2161

A celebration of Reid’s life will be held at a later date. Photos and memories are welcomed so that his sons can remember his legacy. Please email reidhance.memories@gmail.com.

Ease the aches, pains and get moving with massage therapy

Get ready for the sun with a trip to a tanning bed

W

ith warmer temperatures and summer sunshine on the way, now is the time to get ready for that warmer weather with a deep, great-looking tan.

That’s what many customers at Body Glo Tan in Blundell Centre do at this time of year.

“It’s less likely that you will burn if you get a base tan before going outside,” explains salon manager Nicole Herbert.

“While that takes a little bit of time - usually two or three times a week - you are doing it in a controlled environment over short sessions.”

Herbert says stronger for shorter periods is better because it means less exposure time. Those preferring an option to a tanning bed can try Body Glo’s spray tan booth. “We use the booth from Norvell which is the number one rated spray tan booth in Canada. “And the best thing about their technology is that everything they use has a violet undertone, which means no one can accidentally turn orange no matter what colour skin you have,” she explains. “You will always look flawlessly bronzed.

And while current public health restrictions prohibit travel to sunny destinations outside of the country, a trip to Body Glo can act as a quick “getaway.”

“People can be worried about looking like an Oompa Loompa, but they’ll never get to that level.”

“A lot of people who’d normally be coming in for their base tans are still getting them done and are considering it a mini ‘staycation’,” Herbert says.

Customers can also feel confident and safe knowing the salon adheres to all required COVID-19 safety protocols, which includes:

“They are going to Hawaii or Mexico for 12 minutes in a tanning bed.

• Online appointment booking – Facebook, Instagram, BG website • Plexiglass barrier at the front desk • Hand sanitizer at the entrance, all rooms, powder area, washroom, and front desk • Mandatory masks worn by all • Social distancing, allowing only one client at the front desk at a time • Medical grade sanitizing solutions to clean all tanning beds and equipment

“So, even though they are not building a base tan for a upcoming vacation, they are getting the same warmth with UV exposure, which is also good for their mental health if they struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder.” When you book a tanning session at Body Blo Tan, there’s plenty of options. “We have two different types of lay-down and stand-up tanning beds,” Herbert adds. “They range from seven to 15-minute maximums, which means it’s pretty powerful, giving deeper, longer-lasting colour. They are speedy and efficient. “The basic beds at most tanning salons run for 20 to 25 minutes,”

ow is an excellent time to get your body ready to be active.

With the better weather coming, and public health restrictions easing for outdoor activities, the staff at Sense Massag ge Therap py in Blundell Centre are there to help work out the aches and pains you may have developed during the winter and lengthy COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions.

“With a team of registered massage therapists working under strict public health protocols, clients can feel confident about their visit,” says Edward Chang, a registered massage therapist at the clinic, which is located between Shopper’s Drug Mart and Kin’s Farm Market. “We follow all the current guidelines like mask-wearing and sanitizing our hands. But some of the cleaning protocols are things we were already doing before COVID, so it wasn’t so big a change,” Chang says.

What did change was the impact the pandemic initially had on client traffic, as visits were down last spring by around 80 per cent. “It was slow because people were unsure if it was safe to be in such close contact with another person, especially in an industry like massage therapy where it’s not possible to maintain social distancing during treatment,” Chang says. But by last September, business was back to almost normal as customers had become familiar with COVID protocols. Many of the clients who continued their treatments as usual through the early

days of the pandemic were nurses who relied on massage therapy sessions to get them back to providing front-line care. “Roughly a third of our clients are care workers who have stress and physically-related conditions,” Chang says. Chang says some clients are catching up on their treatments to get them back on track as things go back to normal. And from a public health perspective, better days are on the horizon. “With the vaccines and what the numbers are showing, in terms of cases, I think we are approaching better times, although we should all maintain standards like hand-washing and mask-wearing,” Chan says. “And now is a good time to get a massage and take care of your body, so when you want to get out there and, perhaps, go for a hike, you are free of any aches and pains that might have discouraged you.” For more information on how massage therapy can benefit you, visit Sense Massage Therapy at sensemassag ge.ca.
