Getting AZ jab shortens line for others ...Nothing like priorities.

Eve Edmonds

EEDMONDS@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

So I got the shot last Friday. My pharmacist called Thursday at about 7 p.m. to say she had just received a shipment of the AstraZeneca vaccine. My husband and I were at her counter at 9 a.m. the next morning — sleeves rolled up. While we couldn’t get there fast enough, I won’t deny, there was some trepidation prior. The weekend before, we had put our names on the wait list which led to plenty of discussion about blood clots, efficacy, and, of course, the all-important Michigan game...no kidding, this actually came up. As the U.S. hasn’t approved AZ yet, and there’s talk of needing to show a vaccine card to enter some venues like, oh say, University of Michigan’s football stadium, a certain someone wondered aloud if he’d be denied entrance if/when he made his annual pilgrimage to the Big House, as it’s known in college lore.

Football aside, there are valid reasons to give some thought to getting any jab, and this one is no exception. What’s concerning are the unknowns. We don’t know, for example, if the rate of blood clots is going to increase significantly (at this point, we’re at one in more than 700,000 in Canada.) Or, if another dire condition could emerge. However, there are also a lot of knowns, one of which is the fact this virus, which has already taken the lives of almost three million people around the world, will continue to mutate and become even deadlier the longer it circulates in populations. I could have waited, maybe a week or so, before my age group would be eligible to book an appointment at a government clinic where I would get either Pfizer or Moderna, but time is of the essence. And now the real reason. I wanted the vaccine for myself, but I want it even more for my 20-something kids. Heart-breaking scenes of elderly people being ravaged in long-term care homes

are quickly being replaced with stories of 30-somethings on ventilators saying their final farewell to family over Zoom, as one doctor recently described it on CBC. These variants are deadlier and hitting younger people. As more of us who are eligible for AstraZeneca step out of the lineup for Pfizer and Moderna, the sooner those vaccines can get to my kids, your kids and every other young person who still has so much of their life ahead of them. Moreover, these young people are more likely to be on the frontlines. Childcare advocate Nicky Byres notes how most of their workers are in their 20s and 30s, dealing with kids who are still learning how to wash their hands, yet those workers are slated to be among the last vaccinated. (Page 11) And then there’s the mental health. I’m living in a full house, but even so, I’m missing the odd drink with friends or dinner with extended family. That said, I can manage. I didn’t exactly have a rockin’ social life before the pandemic, so a Friday night walk and Satur-

day night watching Netflix isn’t going to kill me. But that wouldn’t have been the case in my 20s, or even 30s. At that time, I was desperate to get out of my parent’s suburban home, travel, socialize and meet the world. It’s not just about dancing on tables, although that kind of exuberance can be part of it, it’s about that feeling of exploding onto the scene. Of course that can’t happen now, and I’m not making excuses for some truly outrageous behaviour — behaviour, I’ll add, the vast majority of young people do not engage in. But I can understand the impulse and recognize how tough this pandemic is, particularly on that group. All this is to say, the dose of Pfizer or Moderna that I don’t take is one more dose for those who don’t have a another choice. It sounds altruistic, but not overly so, given I’m more likely to die in a car accident than from a vaccine-induced blood clot — and yet I still drive. Now we just have to worry about getting into that Michigan game.

Racism can come in many forms

Don’t applaud Trump Dear Editor,

Re: “Trump got it right,” Letters, April 8 I’d like to respond to Wayne Clouston’s letter of April 5 asserting that President Trump “got it right” for placing blame for COVID-19 on China. It is true the virus originated in China, and China was late in sharing information about the outbreak to the world. China can be faulted for that. But Trump has his own share of the blame for the way he mishandled and downplayed the seriousness of the virus early on in the outbreak. It is well documented how his denial of science has resulted in the needless death of hundreds of thousands of American lives. He certainly should not be

“applauded” for putting the blame on China.

attacks.

He did that only when it suited his purpose — to deflect blame for his own failings and egregious mishandling of the pandemic in his own country.

Furthermore, Mr. Clouston is way off base to say the China Virus or Kung Flu is just “good-natured hilarity.”

I will agree Trump’s calling of the virus “the China virus” or “Kung Flu” was probably directed at the Chinese government (CCP) and not the Chinese people. But intentionally or not, that has resulted in a huge spike in attacks on not just ethnic Chinese, but other Asians (Koreans, Filipinos, Japanese...) all over the world. Yet that has not stopped Trump from continuing to use these inflammatory terms. He could help to defuse the situation by making a public statement to denounce these racial

But he has chosen not to.

Dear Editor, Re: “Trump got it right,” Letters, April 8

I wonder if the thousands of people of Asian descent who have been insulted or brutalized since Trump’s remarks think it’s funny.

Racism is not limited to being a member of the KKK or freely dropping racist names. Racism presents itself in many ways.

Will Mr. Clouston feel the hilarity when the Chinese persons in his family are assaulted?

A teacher telling an Asian child they should do better on their math test (based on the stereotype that Asians are good at math) or a complete stranger saying “You Asians can’t drive” (based on another stereotype) is also a form of racism. It isn’t funny or good-natured hilarity, it’s racism.

The fact is ethnic “jokes” about people’s physical characteristics, behaviours and language are unfunny and only serve to perpetuate longstanding racial stereotypes.

There has been an increase in physical and verbal attacks against Asians during the pandemic.

And, as we have seen lately, they are far from harmless.

If, like the letter writer said, you have Chinese persons in your family, then this should be a real concern for you.

Trump’s “refreshing doggedness” as you call it, to use the terms “Chinese virus” and “Kung Flu” is dangerous and hurtful to the Asian community. One only has to go back to our long history of anti-Asian rhetoric and violence. Nobody is perfect, but when someone tells you, what you said or did is racist, you don’t get to say but I have Chinese persons in my family and/or I have practiced martial arts. These do not give you a free pass to say whatever you want about racism, and is not a one way ticket out of racism town. What you need to do is close your mouth, open your ears and take in what they are telling you. Any other response is unproductive, insensitive and privileged.

Leave out conspiracies Senior daycare Dear Editor,

Re: Trump got it right, Letters, April 8 Richmond News should not become a platform for COVID-19 conspiracy theories! I thought that a Richmond News reader’s recent article lauding Donald Trump’s actions and words was fraught with issues and problems. Although, there are many racially based jokes in North American culture, which can be (mis)construed as a form of good humour, let’s unpack the main issue here, and do a little bit of research. There are far worse biological weapons at the disposal of People’s Republic of China than a novel coronavirus. It has a relatively low mortality rate and although is very contagious not very likely a biological weapon of any sort. I suggest the Richmond News read-

er research the Aral Sea Incident about the Soviet Union’s 1971 biological weapons test (release) of a highly virulent and deadly strain of smallpox. Ten people were infected and three people died from haemorrhagic smallpox. A quick internet search of various biological weapons (BW) produced in the United States and its allies and BW produced in Russia and China will show that this was not in any way, shape or form a weaponized version of a coronavirus. There are far more deadly and contagious diseases BWs. As for Donald Trump’s so-called good humour. Let me leave with a just a parting thought. The Richmond News reader mentioned “Kung Flu” and “China Virus” and then claimed to say those comments were directed at the CCP.

also needed

All right, let me ask one question, what does “Kung Fu” (martial arts, actually an incorrect word and term) have to do with the CCP and what does the term “China Virus” have to do with the CCP?

Dear Editor, Re: “City could create thousands of childcare spots by 2031,” News, April.

Donald Trump is a native English speaker. If he wanted to say that the CCP was wholly responsible for the novel coronavirus, he should not be making comments directed at “Kung Fu” (in Chinese, it means hard work, not actually a martial art).

Congratulations to the City of Richmond for planning to create thousands of childcare spots by 2031. My dream is that the headline would (also) read “City and Vancouver Coastal Health to create thousands of Senior Day Care Spots by 2031.” For every childcare spot in Richmond, I would like to see an equivalent senior daycare spot. The need is great and Richmond City Council has always been supportive of the needs of seniors in our great community. I urge council to put pressure on Vancouver Coastal Health to work towards this goal.

Furthermore, there are still two Chinas, to which was the Donald referring to? Certainly not the Republic of China (Taiwan) — using the word Taiwan actually supports the CCP’s efforts.

Seniors are a very large percentage of the Richmond population, and I applaud family members who are taking on the role of caregivers. They are the unsung heroes in our community.

Secondly, the Chinas are not only two states, but a civilization. By stating “China Virus” this denigrates both states and the civilization.

As a senior, I hope to see my dream come true.

Witnesses sought Tenshi Seafood fined $110,000 after cyclist hit Valerie Leung Kirsten Clarke KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Richmond RCMP is appealing for witnesses after a cyclist was left badly injured after being hit by a pickup truck. Mounties say that, shortly before 9 a.m. on March 17, a frontline officer was patrolling near River Drive and No. 4 Road when he came upon a female cyclist, who was lying on the road in “apparent medical distress.” An investigation into the collision revealed that the 45-yearold woman was hit by a white, newer model pickup truck that was towing a large trailer as she entered onto River Drive on her bike from a nearby pedestrian walkway, said Richmond Mounties in a statement.

The cyclist was transported to hospital where she was treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries. “The female cyclist involved in this collision was injured quite badly,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Ian Henderson, in a statement. “Fortunately, one of our frontline officers came upon her during routine patrols and was able to offer assistance. Our investigators would really like to speak with the driver of the vehicle involved.” Anyone who witnessed this incident or who has dash-cam video is asked to contact Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212, quoting file number 21-7094. To remain anonymous, contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-2228477.

A Richmond seafood company has been slapped with a huge fine after it was found guilty of violating Canada’s Fisheries Act. Tenshi Seafood Limited, its co-owner and supplier were hit with a total fine of over $110,000 for hindering fisheries officers during an inspection and trying to destroy evidence of undersized crabs that were caught. Richmond Provincial Court Judge Bonnie Craig found the company guilty of violating Canada’s Fisheries Act and ordered the company to pay a fine of $75,000 and to hand over a list of its customers from the past two years to the Department of Fisheries and Ocean (DFO). The company was also ordered to publish a letter addressing all its customers of the offences the company was found guilty of. Tenshi’s co-owner Dishi Liu was also ordered to pay a fine of $25,000 and Thuong Nguyen, master of the commercial fishing vessel Dream Chaser, was fined $10,000 for obstructing a fisheries officer.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF INTENT Under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act An application has been received by the Liquor & Cannabis Regulation Branch, Victoria B.C. and by the City of Richmond from:

The DFO said that on Sept. 18, 2018, one of its Steveston-based officers arrived at the business for a routine inspection, only to witness a man running from the building and speeding away with what looked like a crab crate in the back of his vehicle. The officer was then stopped by the owner and staff of Tenshi from conducting an inspection, which included not answering questions, failing to provide necessary paperwork, weights or volume figures from the previous sale. The officer eventually found several undersized crabs discarded in the processing plant. According to the DFO, keeping undersized Dungeness crabs is prohibited under the 2018 Area J commercial crab licence, which Nguyen’s fleet was licensed under. “Fisheries and Oceans Canada has a mandate to protect and conserve marine resources and to prosecute offenders under the Fisheries Act,” reads the statement. “It ensures and promotes compliance with the Act and other laws and regulations through a combination of land, air and sea patrols, as well as education and awareness activities.”

Emergency services were called just before 2 p.m. to the intersection of Leonard and Ryan roads, just 100 yards or so from William Bridge elementary. Childcare workers, teachers call for vaccines With COVID-19 cases on the rise in B.C., the executive of a Richmond-based childcare organization says vaccines are needed now for childcare workers — many of whom are in their 20s and 30s. “The level of anxiety amongst our staff has just skyrocketed,” said Nicky Byres of the Society of Richmond Children’s Centres, which operates six centres in the city. “I think that the change, with the variants, with the age group of people getting ill, where there are essential workers who are in that age range, I do think they should be prioritized.” She added that early childhood educators are concerned, not just about getting sick themselves, but are also “so concerned about bringing COVID to the centre and to the children.” Childcare workers aren’t alone

in their call for vaccines for those on the frontlines. The Richmond Teachers’ Association, along with other teacher locals in Vancouver Coastal Health, is calling on the province to vaccinate teachers — particularly those in districts with a high number of school exposures. Liz Baverstock, RTA president, said teachers have been collaborative, patient and understanding during the pandemic. She said the government should focus vaccination efforts on teachers who spend five hours a day with 24 to 30 kids. Furthermore, the province has said it’s important to have schools open for kids’ mental health and learning, she added. When B.C. first announced its AstraZeneca vaccine program for a long list of frontline workers — including early childhood educators and teachers — Byres said

“It was such a brief moment, and the weight is back. Our staff are so young — they’re going to be among the last vaccinated now,” said Byres. Both Byres and Baverstock pointed out that there are other vaccines available in the province — Pfizer and Moderna — which could be used to target frontline workers. Those vaccines have also been used to target hotspot areas. B.C. ramps up vaccine registration

Those born in 1981 or earlier (40 and above) will be eligible as of Monday, April 19. B.C. is currently booking the 65 and older group for vaccinations. While the province’s new booking system allows anyone to register, B.C. is asking people to wait until their age cohort is called to “preserve system capacity.” Meanwhile, people aged 55 to 65 can get an AstraZeneca vaccine through some local pharmacies. Record number of cases detected in Richmond The BC Centre for Disease Control reported last Friday that 272

cases of COVID-19 were detected in Richmond between April 2 and 8, which is approximately 39 new cases a day. This is up from 208 cases the week prior. This is the highest weekly total reported in the city since the start of the pandemic. COVID exposures According to VCH’s online school exposure list, there were exposures on April 6 at Burnett secondary and McNeely elementary. Meanwhile, exposures occurred at Homma elementary and McNair secondary on April 6 to 7, and Hamilton elementary on April 6 to 8. But concerns over rare cases of blood clots in younger people immunized with this vaccine put a halt to the employee vaccination program. The province’s supply is now being diverted to people aged 55 to 65, administered through pharmacies in parts of B.C.

As of Wednesday, people aged 50 (born 1971) and older can register for a vaccine under B.C.’s age-based system — receiving either Pfizer or Moderna — and those born in 1976 or earlier (45 and older) can register starting Friday.

Gymnasts lift prizes Another Richmond fencer at the virtual B.C.s heading to Tokyo Olympics Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Richmond gymnasts had a very successful tilt at the first ever virtual BC Championships recently. Due to the pandemic, very few sports have been fortunate enough to quickly pivot to this as a new model of remotely evaluating and celebrating athletes’ performances. And this year, more than 600 participants, of all ages, from 37 B.C. clubs competed in competed in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG), Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) and Trampoline Gymnastics (TG). Overall, athletes from the Richmond Gymnastic Association (RGA) collected a number of prizes: In the 2008 age category (JO6), Rich-

mond’s Meher Bains was first on beam and overall fifth. In the 2008 (JO7), Nadia Gambetti was first on vault and overall third. In the 2007 age (JO8), Naomi Tsang was overall first after being first on both beam and bars. In the 2003-2006 age category (JO8), Pavitt Bains was first on beam and overall second. RGA’s entire JO8 team, even with just three athletes competing on it, achieved a commendable second place overall. One of the RGA coaches, Veronika Pathak, said she was “very impressed with the results given the modified training schedules and interruptions for the past year or so. “Now we can start looking forward to next year’s competition season. The girls have worked hard and the results show.

Another Richmond-based fencer is on his way to the Tokyo Olympics after the last qualifying event in Qatar. It’s a lifetime ambition and dream come true for 28-year-old Eli Schenkel, who coowns and operates S-Class Fencing in north Richmond with his brother, Joseph. Due to the pandemic, all of last year’s qualifying events were postponed, so it took to last month at the Doha Grand Prix in Qatar for Eli to earn his spot in Tokyo and achieve a lifetime goal of becoming an Olympian at his chosen sport. “Having spent roughly a year in limbo, where the Canadian team itself was qualified for Tokyo, yet the individual and team selection still being up in the air, it was a huge sigh of relief to finally achieve my 18-year dream of attending an Olympic

games,” said Eli, who has been fencing since he was 10.

“I was overwhelmed with gratitude for my brother Eli Schenkel and Alex has made it onto Martin, anTeam Canada other coach I for the Tokyo work with in Olympics. Calgary, who both helped me to prepare over the past year.” Like many Olympic athletes, there is a back story of sacrifice, with Eli giving up a “cozy” career in marketing in L.A. — where his family is based — to pursue coaching in B.C. and a shot at the Olympic team. The Richmond News reported last month how Richmond Secondary alumnus Shaul Gordon also clinched a spot on the team.

Richmond powerlifter makes Team Canada Sumeet Sharma has made the national team for the World Championships of powerlifting.

Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Richmond-based powerlifter Sumeet Sharma was delighted to hear the news that he has been selected to represent Canada for the world’s powerlifting championship in Kazakhstan this fall. “I was notified by the International Powerlifting Federation two weeks ago. It has been a huge honour and privilege to represent Canada and compete on the global stage,” said Sharma, who is keeping his fingers crossed the event won’t get cancelled again this fall.

Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic cost Sharma his chance to fight in the Czech Republic for the world’s powerlifting championship. Although he wasn’t able to showcase his talents on

the world’s stage, he turned his attention to working with his friends to donate refreshments and nourishment to frontline workers across the Metro Vancouver area. Sharma admitted it could sometimes be challenging to stay motivated to exercise at home alone.

However, he highly recommends people keep working out, such as going for a run, watching YouTube videos to keep practicing and doing exercise in the backyard. “Workout isn’t only beneficial for your physical health but also good for improving your mental health,” added Sharma.

Children’s book honours introverts Valerie Leung

VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Being introverted is not a bad thing and a Richmond author and elementary school educator is telling kids to be proud of it in her first children’s book. Sharon Dulay, a Richmond resident and a learning support teacher, grew up being labelled as shy. But it wasn’t until she realized she was actually an introvert that she felt a sense of confidence in herself and that she wasn’t the “odd one out.” “Sharing information about being an introvert has become something I’m passionate about because it wasn’t until my late 20s that I realized I’m not shy, just an introvert, and that was okay,” said Dulay, adding that she hopes she can spread the same message to kids. “I’ve always had a passion in creative writing since I was a kid and being an author has been a goal of mine for a long time so this was the perfect opportunity to teach kids to be proud of who they are.” Dulay self-published her book “Gia and the Moon” when she found a lack of books and resources for early learn-

ers and children on what being an introvert is. Her book follows a young girl n a m e d Gia, who Sharon Duis excited lay is a longto start first time Richmond grade, but resident and a then dislearning support teacher. covers that she is an introvert. The character worries that school will be different for her and goes on a journey to discover more about herself. Dulay added that engaging with kids about topics like this can help with boosting their confidence and further their understanding that not everyone is the same. “In society we get so much influence from others around and I want kids to know that they don’t need to be embarrassed to be called an introvert.” Dulay’s book can be found online at www.everbeagency.com, Amazon and at Indigospirit in Richmond Centre.

This giant pirate ship movie set has sprung up in rural, southeast Richmond in the last week or two.

Peter Pan swings into town Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The movie, if it is indeed Peter Pan, will be called “Peter Pan and Wendy” and will star Alexander Molony as the flying teenager and Ever Anderson as Wendy.

A giant movie set in a remote part of Richmond is piquing the curiosity of some local residents.

Co-stars will be Jude Law, Ever Anderson, Yara Shahidi, Alexander Molony and Alyssa Wapanatâhk.

Near Triangle Road — close to Silvercity Cinema — the set features a pirate ship surrounded by a massive white wall.

Law will play Captain Hook, Gaffigan will be Smee and Shahidi will be Tinkerbell.

Rumours are that a remake of Peter Pan is being filmed, given that Disney is known to be filming the children’s classic fairy tale in the Vancouver area this spring. Richmond resident Stevie G LaRocca spotted the set going up a couple of weeks ago and watched as it grew quickly in the days ahead.

According to a recent Disney press release, principal photography will be shot in Vancouver. It’s shooting under the name “Bonfire,” according to a production list from the Director’s Guild of Canada. The film will be released on Disney+ in 2022, according to the film studio.

Richmond resident star-struck by Korean Lee Min-ho Valerie Leung

VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

It was the moment that made everything worthwhile — that seven-hour wait in the rain, those frantic trips down to Steveston, those hours of tracking shooting details online. It was the moment the movie star of her dreams walked up to her and other fans eager to catch a glimpse. “When he came out and stood in front of me and other fans, I was like ‘Oh my God, I’m going to die. He’s right here,” recalled Pamela Bagtas. “He,” of course, is the Korean mega star Lee Min-ho, who was in Richmond last month filming Pachinko, an international drama series based on the adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s novel of the same name. When Pamela Bagtas got word Lee would be coming to B.C. to film the Apple TV series, she was on a mission to see him

When asked if she was worried about physical distancing requirements during COVID-19, she said she wasn’t because she was vaccinated and being a healthcare worker she knew how to keep her distance from others. “It’s crazy and amazing at the same

We just want to see (Lee Min-ho), take pictures and that’s it.”

The filming of Pachinko in B.C. wrapped up on April 11 around 2:30 a.m., according to Bagtas who waited in the cold to say a final goodbye to Lee and Pachinko’s cast members on their last day. That was the moment Minho suddenly walked up to his fans to say goodbye to them — a moment Bagtas says she will never forget. “I hope more Korean celebrities come because with all this racism and hate crime going on against Asians, I want others to know that Asians are talented as well.”

Our Saviour Lutheran church members planted their pollinator garden last week. Photo submitted

Bee garden heaven sent Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Suffice to say, there’s a distinct buzz about the place at Our Saviour Lutheran church on No. 4 Road, close to Granville Avenue. But it’s not coming courtesy of any words of wisdom from its pastor, Christoph Reiners. Nope, instead, the excitement is emanating from a brand new pollinator garden that has just been planted next to the church’s parking lot by the congregation. “Even when we were planting, there was a giant bumble bee just dying to get in there,” said the church’s Bev Krisch about the garden they hope will attract thousands of bees and other pollinators. “We are all very excited about it and we can’t wait to plant even more out there.” After laying down about 10 yards of soil in the 1,000 square feet or so garden last week, the volunteers planted lavender, calendula and perennial geraniums, along with shasta daisies, bee balm, a hazelnut tree, short sunflowers, purple cone flowers and milkweed to attract monarch butterflies. “It started last year with me and my friend Eva Harris, as we were walking along Bath Slough,” added Krisch. “I hadn’t been down there for a while and I was just amazed to see that a pollinator garden had been created there. The two of us were so excited. “We thought, what could we do and we thought of our big garden out the back of the church. We thought we could absolutely do something for our neighbourhood.” As well as the Bath Slough garden, Our Saviour’s offering to the bees was inspired by other gardens in the city. “We hope to make a difference in our neighbourhood and the farms nearby,” said Krisch.

MLA calls for Anti-racism day Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Richmond MLA Teresa Wat is calling for May 29 to be declared Anti-Racism Education Day — a day to promote inclusion and tolerance and identify all forms of racism. Wat has written to Attorney General David Eby asking for the NDP government’s support of the proclamation request. “I hope the NDP government puts aside the politics right now, it’s time for us to work together to fight against racism. We can’t wait anymore,” said Wat. Wat told the Richmond News how she has been contemplating bringing this issue forward for quite a long time.

If you are interested in this excellent opportunity, please email your resume and cover letter to: rakimow@richmond-news.com

After speaking at the Stop Asian Hate rally in Vancouver on March 28, Wat was approached by several Richmondites saying COVID-19 has highlighted racism that has always been present in society.

Deadline for submissions: April 23, 2021 Thank you for your interest in this position and for your submission. Please note that only those selected for an interview will be notified.

“We are overwhelmed with anger and frustration when we bring up this issue. But what we need to do right now is to turn those negative emotions into positive energies to make our community a better place to live,” said Wat.

Food truck survey launched

ent ways. […] The argument is whether it’s fair that the mobile food trucks should be able to go in like that, with no contribution to anything, very low overhead and pick off some of the best business opportunities for the restaurant merchants.”

Nathan Gan EDITOR@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Richmond city council is looking for strategies to create better synergies between food trucks and local businesses.

The key is to study the successes of cities other than Richmond, said Coun. Carol Day.

A motion passed at council this week calls for city staff to look into the food truck activity in Steveston, with an emphasis on displaced business from local restaurants and the potential for an area specifically for food trucks. Coun. Bill McNulty said, at last week’s general purposes meeting, the main concern, according to Steveston proprietors, is that while food trucks are in compliance with council policies and bylaws, the space the food trucks occupy tends to be parking lots of existing businesses. The motion was supported by council, including Mayor

Demand up for tour guide training Nono Shen

NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The sudden grounding of tourism as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t stopped Richmondites from entering the tour guide market. For the fifth year in a row, the Canadian Inbound Tourism Association of Asia Pacific (CITAP), a Richmond-based non-profit committed to developing Canada as the preferred destination for Asian travellers, launched a Chinese-speaking tour guide training program this week. In past years, 40 to 50 students registered for the program. That number jumped to 56 students this year, which is far beyond the

program organizer’s expectation, according to David Lin, board chair of CITAP.

Lin anticipates Canada will see similar trends.

“Some people have confidence that the B.C. tourism sector will grow sharply in a post-pandemic world. Especially with the rollout of the vaccine, the domestic travel might resume in late September,” said Lin. “We still remain hopeful people won’t put off any more adventures once the pandemic ends.”

“I’ve heard from some people saying they have been browsing through YouTube videos and virtual tours of breathtaking sceneries in B.C. to live through the pandemic,” said Lin.

China’s state-run media has been running stories about the travel industry rebounding in that country since the government relaxed travel restrictions. For example, the recent Qingming Festival, also known as tombsweeping holiday that falls on April 4, allows families to visit their ancestors’ cemeteries; Chinese citizens made 102 million domestic trips over three days — up 145 per cent from the same time last year.

Butter Chicken

“The crisis makes us realize that life is short. Now we are more than eager to connect with people and create unforgettable experiences with our loved ones.” Meanwhile, some changes have been made to this year’s program due to COVID-19, such as teaching students travel safety protocols, noted Lin. The three-week program will provide students with a certificate upon graduation, which will allow them to seek job opportunities in local travel agencies.

Liquor store in industrial area rejected Richmond council wasn’t thrilled with the idea of a liquor store application in a strip mall near Ikea. The application to have a retail liquor store at #140-12751 Bridgeport Rd. was rejected by council. Last week, the planning committee voted 3-2 against the proposal, citing the fact the zoning is industrial and focused on home renovation stores. Coun. Carol Day said she might support a micro-brewery in that area, but a liquor store doesn’t fit. “I do feel that strip mall caters to people who are doing renovations to their home,” Day said. The storefront in question is surrounded by other retail stores, including a mattress store, a lighting store and a tile store. City staff recommended rejecting the application because it doesn’t comply with the zoning, but Couns. Bill McNulty and Alexa Loo supported it at the planning meeting. “Everything there is retail — how is what these guys are asking for not matching what’s already in that strip mall?” Loo said. Wayne Craig, director of development with the city, pointed out others stores in the area are industrial retail, for example, building material and home renovation supply stores, adding that a liquor store is “significantly different.” Joe Erceg, general manager of planning and development, further clarified liquor stores are meant to be in commercial centres, however, that particular area is a “distinct retail area” with limited uses. — Maria Rantanen/ Richmond News

if an AED and/or CPR is used, that rate increases to “upwards of 75 per cent.” However, according to the charity, AEDs aren’t always readily available or accessible.

If you have a sudden cardiac arrest while waiting for the Canada Line, your chance of survival is now that much greater. Two automatic external defibrillator stations (AEDs) have been set up at Brighouse and Bridgeport Canada Line stations, and they are among the first such stands to be installed in the province by St. John Ambulance BC and Yukon, with funding from the Rotary Club of Richmond. Ken Leggatt, interim CEO of the first aid and safety charity, said the transit stations were chosen given their high traffic and the risk of sudden cardiac arrest. In B.C., up to 6,000 people can die each year from sudden cardiac arrest — and the majority of cardiac arrests happen outside of a
