Calling out racist rant is easy part Eve Edmonds

EEDMONDS@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

So here we are with yet another video of a “racist rant” in Richmond going viral. (See page 5) This one at one of my favourite coffee shops, no less. This isn’t the first time we’ve embarrassed ourselves as a community with this kind of obnoxious behavior, and I fear it won’t be the last. Perhaps it’s unrealistic to think there won’t be these kinds of flashpoints when diverse groups come together, but of course that doesn’t mean we can accept it. Each and every time something like this happens, we need to call it out and stand with victims. The problem is, that’s the easy part. Where it can get tricky, and uncomfortable, is when we start digging down into what’s behind this kind of intolerance. It forces us to look at ourselves, at each other and at larger forces that come into play.

I don’t mean to make excuses or deny personal responsibility, but we are also products of our histories, our politics and our economic systems. None of us operate in a vacuum.

off a year where we’ve seen a spike in aggression and violence towards Asians, not to mention an American president who used inciting terms like the “China virus” or “Kung flu.”

To that point, we have received a fair amount of blow back for our front page feature last week. The letter on page 4 is just one example.

And then there’s that way-back history of signs in Vancouver parks that read “No dogs or Chinese.”

We were challenged for equating the shooting in Atlanta, Ga., with racism. To be fair, it was something we talked about within the newsroom, given that the shooter claimed he wanted to eliminate the temptations of sex workers. He said it wasn’t about race, according to police. So were we wrong to link the two? Well, we certainly weren’t alone and our coverage was of the reaction to the shooting, and that reaction was all about race. But more importantly, the rationale for calling it an anti-Asian hate crime (which, by the way, the Atlanta police are not doing) has to do with context. We’ve just come

Granted we’ve come a long way, but there’s no denying racism is real. It’s embedded in our culture in complex and sometimes subtle ways. Does that mean any act perpetrated against people who happen to be Asian is racist? Obviously not, but that said, we do need to recognize patterns, hear from those with lived experience and understand that every act happens within a larger context. Also about last week’s feature, we received letters, some from people of Asian descent, who noted the problem isn’t race but issues such as birth tourism, money laundering and a crushing real estate mar-

ket — at least in the Lower Mainland. This wouldn’t be the first time I’ve used this space to stress the need to distinguish valid concerns about immigration, crime or financial regulations (or the lack of) from questions of race. It’s far too simplistic, not to mention just plain wrong, to blame these ills on any one ethnic group. I recognize that as someone not part of a visible minority in Canada, I have a limited perspective. I don’t have anyone walking past me and saying, “You dropped your coronavirus” as one of my reporters did at the start of the pandemic. So it’s my job to listen, both to those with lived experiences of racism as well as those who are feeling threatened by changes. What none of us need to listen to, however, is the kind of ignorance and hate we’ve been hearing in some of these vile rants. That we can call out unequivocally. It’s what we do next that’s going to distinguish us as an inclusive society, or not.

Racism not the issue Dear Editor,

I would like to know your reasoning behind perpetuating the lie that the deadly mass shooting in Atlanta was motivated by anti-Asian racism. In your Thursday, March 25 edition, there are four articles written by Nono Shen and/or Maria Rantanen, which use the tragedy in Atlanta as a means to discuss anti-Asian racism right here in Richmond. Both of these authors point out that the gunman was White while six of the eight victims were of Asian descent, but conveniently leave out the race of the other two victims. Why is that? It seems clear that this was intentional, as to draw focus solely on the Asian victims and the fact that the gunman was White, so that it would fit the mainstream narrative that has been repeated across Canada and the United States. These two authors do, in fact, point out in their last article about local massage parlours that the gunman was not

motivated by race but rather by his sex addiction. However, they again turn it into an anti-Asian issue by claiming that this is “just another day on the job” for migrant sex workers.

Richmond has the largest proportion of Asians in all of North America, and the Lower Mainland is the most diverse place in Canada. We are more than welcoming to Asians and all races. Obviously racism still exists. I have experienced my fair share of racism throughout my life. But it is disingenuous to turn this tragedy into one about race when that is simply not the case. But I guess it is your job to copy whatever the mainstream media says, regardless of whether or not it is based on facts.

This happened in Canada? Dear Editor, Re: “Grieving family still has questions after sentencing,” News, March 25 After reading your report about the procedures from the first day when Christy Mahy died by a careless driver in 2014 till his sentencing in March 2021, I could hardly believe this happened in Canada. How does Canada check a person applying for refugee status? How was he allowed to leave the country? And, at the end, to receive such unjust sentencing. Oh, I could go on and on, but you put it all in your two articles. Thanks for opening my and hopefully many more readers’ eyes.

Steveston speeds not a concern Dear Editor,

Re: “Fines could pay off,” Letters, March 25 As a Steveston resident, Steveston Highway is my main thoroughfare in the city. It is rare to see anyone doing 80 kilometres per hour on the highway, never mind 90 kilometres per hour. Obviously, anyone at that speed needs to be ticketed. I find the flow of traffic consistently and safely moving between 60 and 65 kilometres per hour or slightly slower when traffic is heavy. There is the odd person travelling above or below the flow that causes lane changes and potential problems. I do not have concerns when travelling along this stretch of road.

Racial abuse suspect strikes again It began with a man washing his vehicle in a strata complex’ no-washing zone, apparently blocking several parking stalls while doing so.

Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said she was trying to record the man’s license plate to report it to the strata.

A suspect involved in an alleged racial, verbal assault outside a Steveston coffee shop on Monday appears to be the same man videotaped telling a woman to “go back to China” in a Richmond parking lot two years ago.

When she got out of her car, the man appeared to yell racial slurs at her and sprayed her with the hose he was using to wash his car.

A man and a woman were involved in an alleged incident Monday afternoon inside and outside a Moncton Street café, when racial slurs were allegedly yelled at a worker and coffee was thrown on the floor and at the employee. It’s claimed by the victim that the couple reacted after being asked to respect social distancing regulations. Police were called and arrested one of the suspects at the scene. The employee involved posted video of the incident on social media, which shows the one of the suspects was driving a BMW vehicle with the same license

The man also repeatedly told the woman and her male friend to go back to China. The woman posted the video on social media but did not report the incident to police. Meanwhile, Richmond RCMP is asking for more witnesses to Monday’s incident to come forward. The victim said the whole incident was also captured on security camera, which she has circulated. As well, a co-worker posted a photo of the couple and an account of what hap-

pened on WhatsApp.

“An incident like this affects everyone in our community. We are in the early stages of this investigation, however, we are asking anyone who may have witnessed or have video evidence to contact us immediately,” said Cpl. Adriana O’Malley. “Racism has no place in our community,” said Chief Supt. Will Ng. “I want to reassure the public that any investigation with potential hate motivated undertones will be given our full attention and oversight.” The police said the investigation is still ongoing and no further information will be released at this time. Anyone with information regarding this matter is asked to contact Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 or by email at Richmond_Tips@rcmp-grc.gc.ca and quote file number 2021-8311. Schools mandate masks Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Wearing masks indoors will be mandatory for all students in Grades 4 to 12 as well as all staff in public and private schools throughout B.C. The Ministry of Education clarified this mask guideline late Tuesday night after Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry indicated Monday this was going to come into effect. The mask mandate is effective immediately and includes when students are both inside and outside of their learning group. Masks will also be re-

In a letter to Richmond parents late Tuesday, superintendent Scott Robinson pointed out more than 80 per cent of students in Richmond elementary schools already wear masks daily. For those who don’t, “teachers will spend the next few days helping their students adjust to this change,” Robinson explained in his letter. “We recognize that for a small number of families, this will be a new routine, and teachers and school administrators will be encouraged to support student mask use through positive and inclusive ap-

Exceptions will also be made for those who need to have their face uncovered because of a disability, for example, where visual cues, facial expressions or lip reading is necessary. Students in kindergarten to Grade 3 are also “strongly encouraged” to wear masks.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF INTENT Under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act

CBSA allowed convicted criminal to enter Canada

Questions still surround who is responsible for allowing a convicted criminal with a history of deportation to enter Canada on a refugee claim, before he caused the death of an innocent Richmond woman.

plain why Albanian native Erjon Kashari was allowed to roam free in Canada for four years, until he caused the death of pedestrian Christy Mahy in 2014, after driving dangerously on Russ Baker Way.

After multiple emails and phone calls back and forth between the Richmond News and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), neither organization accepted blame.

By Wednesday afternoon, we hadn’t received a reply.

However, information about the process when someone enters Canada and makes a refugee claim — on a link provided by the CBSA — clearly states it’s the CBSA’s responsibility to check a claimant’s record. “Factors determining an individual’s eligibility to make a refugee claim include whether the claimant has committed a serious crime, made a previous claim in Canada, or received protection in another country,” according to the CBSA’s own site. The News asked CBSA last Friday to further ex-

been asked many questions by the News surrounding the fatal accident that killed 34-year-old Mahy. Until recently, the investigation had either been ongoing or the case was before the courts, limiting the RCMP’s ability to respond. Mahy’s family wanted to know why Kashari was allowed to leave Canada a few months after the accident and why it took two years to investigate it. The RCMP’s and CBSA’s full responses are available at Richmond-News.com by searching “Kashari.” —Alan Campbell/News

The News reached out to Steveston-Richmond East’s Conservative MP Kenny Chiu to push for more answers on why Kashari was allowed to enter Canada. Home invasion witness sought

Mounties are looking for four suspects who broke into a Richmond home last week. Richmond RCMP say a man and a woman were at their home — in the 22000-block of Westminster Highway in the Hamilton area — watching TV around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 23 when their doorbell rang. When they answered, four men armed with a crow bar and “a possible firearm” barged in, restrained the couple and ransacked their home, stealing several items. According to police, the wrong home may have been hit. “This was a very frightening incident for the two victims who were simply enjoying a quiet night at home when it happened,” said Cpl. Ian Henderson, Richmond RCMP spokesperson. “However, based on the initial investigation, this incident does not appear to have been a random one. It seems the suspects may have had specific targets in mind, but chose the wrong home at the time.” Anyone with information can call 604-278-1212, quoting file number 21-7675. —Kirsten Clarke/Richmond News

A Richmond resident is warning people to take more care with how their packages are delivered — after seeing on camera a cycling thief taking off with one of his. Phil Goulet’s security camera footage showed the thief casually cycling into his driveway near No. 3 and Williams roads on Saturday around 5 p.m. The video shows the thief grabbing the package, which included earbuds and cooling fans for a printer, from behind a pillar near his front door. What makes the theft even more brazen is the fact that someone was home at the time, with a vehicle parked in the driveway. And, considering he’s caught suspicious activity on camera several times in the last year, Goulet wants peo-

“I’d like to get the thief’s picture put out there to raise awareness and hopefully get him to rethink his choices,” Goulet told the Richmond News on Monday. “We love living in Richmond, it’s a small town feel with big city amenities, and we think it’s very safe compared to other nearby cities.” If you are getting a package delivered from the likes of Amazon, you can request to have the delivery driver ring the doorbell or knock on the door. If you’re not going to be at home when the package is due, arrange for it to be dropped at a neighbour’s or friend’s house. Alternatively, many online retailers allow you to have the package dropped off at a post office. Goulet, who has reported the theft to the RCMP, said he has since been looking for a lock box for packages to avoid Saturday’s theft happening again.

Sex assault trial set for June Maria Rantanen

MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Twenty-three days in June and July have been booked for the trial of a man accused of 17 crimes ranging from sexual assault, theft, possession of child pornography and “administering a noxious substance.” The alleged crimes largely took place in Richmond and the trial of Satvir Sanghera is set for Richmond Provincial Court starting June 14. Sanghera was released on bail last July to await trial with conditions to stay away from places where there is anyone under the age of 18, from six women, and from sex workers and any sex trade agency. The Crown alleges that, between

December 2015 and March 2016, Sanghera sexually assaulted a woman and distributed “an intimate image” without consent or “being reckless as to whether or not that person gave their consent.”

Furthermore, he is charged with possession of the woman’s underwear and credit card. On April 21, 2016, he is alleged to have solicited a sex worker, administered “a noxious substance” to a woman with the intent to “aggrieve or annoy her,” and then assaulted her. In addition, Sanghera is charged with sexually assaulting two sex workers, one in November 2017 and another in April 2019. Other charges include possession of child pornography and fraud.

Massage parlour review delayed

Meanwhile, a report to Richmond city council on massage parlours has been delayed by more than a year. The safety of sex workers, however, has been once again pushed to the forefront after the killing of eight people in massage parlours in Atlanta, Ga. Alison Clancey, executive director of Swan, a non-profit that works with migrant sex workers, said violence is something sex workers have to deal with regularly. She has reiterated the need for an “adult conversation” about sex work in the context of labour laws and safety. Search sexual assault for full story at Richmond-News.com

Dumping costs city $171,000 Kirsten Clarke

KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Dead-end roads, laneways and industrial and rural areas in Richmond have become illegal dumping grounds — costing the city’s taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars to clean up. Last year alone, as a result of some people’s “blatant disregard for bylaws and the environment,” the city spent more than $171,000 to clean up abandoned items, said city spokesperson Clay Adams. He added that, in 2020, there were 982 reported instances of illegal dumping in Richmond, up 21 per cent from 2019. The most-frequently dumped items are furniture, mattresses, drywall or hazardous material and construction material. Collectively, municipalities across the region reported more than 47,000 incidents of illegal dumping, up eight per cent from 2019, according to Metro Vancouver. Cleaning up the abandoned items costs local govSearch dumping for ernments around $5.8 full story at Richmondmillion each year. News.com

Doc vaccinates mom against COVID-19 Kirsten Clarke KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

It’s been several long months since Dr. Matthew Kwok has been physically near his mother — but on March 16 he was not only able to sit next to her, he was also able to vaccinate her against COVID-19 at the same time. “We’ve seen each other from outside, and through phone calls, but not in the same room, so that was the first time I was able to interact with her physically in some sense. And the first day I did that, I gave her a shot,” said Kwok, an emergency physician at Richmond Hospital, who also lives in the city. Kwok administered the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to his mother, Olive, as well as to several other seniors, on March 16, the opening day of the River Rock Casino clinic.

“Vaccinating my mom was very meaningful and wonderful, but so was vaccinating everyone else. The mood was just ecstatic.”

encouraged to get the jab.

“I think we can do better in Richmond, in terms of having more people embrace the vaccine,” he said.

Since the pandemic, Kwok’s mother hasn’t been able to go out into her community — her church has been closed for more than a year and family dinners have been off the table.

All of the vaccines available in Canada are safe and effective, said Dr. Meena Dawar, Richmond’s medical health officer with Vancouver Coastal Health.

“I think that’s a very similar story for many people in the Richmond community. They’re looking forward to having physical contact with people (once health restrictions are lifted), and also in terms of having simple things…that we’ve been missing throughout the whole entire pandemic.” For more than a year, Kwok has been working on the front lines of the pandemic response, and he has seen a number of patients admitted into the intensive care unit and put on ventilators. He’s also seen how the pandemic has impacted patients’ mental health, with no visitations allowed at the hospital. But now, he said, there’s “a lot of hope”

Dr. Matthew Kwok and his mom Olive. VCH photo for the future. Kwok, however, said he’s concerned that “Richmond still has a large proportion of people that have reservations about the safety of the vaccine.” He hopes that by showing he places enough trust in it to administer it to his own mother, others will be

She said there’s “really solid data” on protection from even one dose of the vaccine, for example, from the BC Centre for Disease Control which found a “tremendous decline in illness” in elderly seniors and health-care workers under 65 years of age. “For most vaccines, we know that protection is better when two doses are spaced further apart than when they’re closer together,” said Dawar. “I’m very confident in what we’re doing in British Columbia, I’m very confident in what we’re doing in Canada…and we continue to monitor both safety and vaccine performance in terms of protection over time, and we’ll continue to do that.”

Restaurants left with extra inventory after indoor dining ban Maria Rantanen & Nono Shen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The news Monday of a three-week ban on indoor dining came as a “big surprise” to Tristan Hayden, owner of Britannia Brewing Steveston, but he said he hopes the order doesn’t drag on longer like others have. Hayden would have preferred some warning about the new restrictions. It’s tough on his employees when they’re working and these announcements come, he said. Hayden is hoping to keep all his employees working, but they will probably have to reduce shifts.

“It’s going to be very difficult,” Hayden said. Restaurants across B.C. had to suspend indoor dining as of midnight Monday due to rising COVID-19 case numbers. Indoor religious worship services and fitness classes are also suspended. The new public health order amendments were announced by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry on Monday, and will be in effect until April 19. Restaurants can, however, offer outdoor or patio dining, takeout or delivery services, fitness centres can have one-on-one training and outdoor worship is allowed. At the beginning of the pandemic, when

restaurants were able to re-open, Britannia Brewing already reduced its indoor capacity by half. This ban on indoor dining will reduce its capacity again by more than half.

on Bridgeport, said the latest guidelines from the provincial health officer mean he can’t hold any indoor group exercise classes or dancing classes.

The restaurant has an uncovered outdoor patio, so that means serving there will be “weather dependent,” Hayden said.

However, he said he wasn’t shocked after hearing the news; rather, he’s been mentally prepared for that because the COVID-19 numbers have been increasing daily.

“We’re fortunate a little bit at our place to have an outdoor area, but our neighbours across the road from us don’t even have outdoor space,” he added. Furthermore, Monday is the day the restaurant and brewery orders stock, and they now have to figure out how to use their fresh seafood and produce without wasting it, Hayden explained. A Mustang marriage made in heaven “I just learned how to restore it myself. It took two years and, I think about $18,000 in total, up to now.”

Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Twiss said the car’s likely worth about $100,000 now but there “isn’t a chance in hell” of her selling it.

This is a story about a woman called Tangerine Twiss and a beat-up Mustang convertible 64 ½, which she bought in the ‘70s for $1,400.

“Are you kidding? After doing all that work myself. I always wanted a Mustang convertible.

It’s a story of a classic car which Twiss, now age 73, had to then “rescue” from a Richmond body shop in receivership. It’s a story about a 20-something woman — with zero knowledge of cars or their repair — spending two years and thousands of dollars restoring the red Mustang herself, complete with a cream leather interior, hand-sewn with a Singer sewing machine. And it’s a story about a woman who had to fight sexism at car shows, even having to put a man’s name down as the official owner, because the male-dominated environment refused to believe she was responsible for restoring the car to its former glory. A former glory, no less, that won her the biggest prize of her car-showing career — first place in the James Bond category at a Van Dusen Gardens event — her Mustang is an almost exact replica of the one used by the late Sean Connery in Goldfinger. Oh, did we mention that Twiss, in her

“I’ve taken it to car shows and will likely do so again once the pandemic is over. Tangerine Twiss restored this classic Mustang 64 1/2 herself, after buying it all beat up in 1977. Tangerine Twiss photo retirement, is one of Richmond’s marriage commissioners who marries couples in her Bridgeport Road backyard, with her Mustang often getting into the wedding photos. It’s a story you couldn’t make up if you tried. “The car was in rough shape, very bad. Someone had painted it an ugly blue, with a paint brush!” Twiss recalled. “The original is Rangoon red. I repainted it candy apple red. It was a little lighter. “I lost points (at the car shows) because they knew it was not the original colour.” Looking back to the day she acquired the

Rabbitats has been dealing with reports recently of families of bunnies — many of them newborns — seeking refuge in the undercarriage of vehicles in the city. The latest incident was last Thursday at Chelsea Road, near Blundell and No. 2 roads, where a family was rescued. One of the heroes of the day was Jonny So, of Jonny’s Towing, who has offered a few times to come out and hoist vehicles so rabbits could be rescued.

“(A) little guy (or girl) was found on a driveway in Richmond. His parents seemed to be around but no sign of a nest,” according to Rabbitats. “Given that they were seen under a car in the driveway, it’s possible there’s a nest in the undercarriage. “The car hasn’t moved in over a week and this baby is probably a week old. Considering s/he was lying on the driveway all night and is still relatively healthy, mom probably at least fed the little tyke.” —Alan Campbell/Richmond News

“It didn’t work that way. I had it towed to the body shop and told them to restore it to perfect condition. But the fella there drank himself to death. It went into receivership. “My car was stuck there, with all the parts I needed. I think it was $4,000 I gave him.” Twiss said she had to think quickly and “improvise” to get the Mustang and her paid-for parts back.

Twiss’ other lifelong dream was to become a marriage commissioner, something she realized after she retired a few years ago from a long career at UBC, where she ran the international student office. “I have my backyard set up as a chapel, especially for it,” explained Twiss, who actually officiated her own son’s wedding. “Since the pandemic, more people have been getting married in my backyard, with a maximum 10 people, all masked up. “I have a bubble machine there, flowers, I love it.”

Bird lovers asked to remove feeders after salmonella fear

Baby bunnies being found living in cars in Richmond A Richmond-based rabbit charity is asking drivers to check under their cars before taking off.

Mustang on March 28, 1977 — the same calendar date her son was born — Twiss recalled how she thought it’d be plain-sailing taking the car to a body shop and saying “let me know when it’s ready.”

“But it was, and still is, a man’s world. When the car was called a winner (in the past), I walked up there as proud as punch to get my prize, even though they thought it was owned by a man.”

BC SPCA is asking all bird lovers across B.C. to remove their backyard bird feeders to stop the spread of an ongoing salmonella outbreak. In February and March, wildlife rehabilitation centres in the Lower Mainland saw an increase in pine siskin birds being admitted due to salmonella infection, and the public is being asked to remove all bird feeders until late April or early May to stop the outbreak. The BC SPCA recommends only providing feeders in winter between October and March as there are “lots of natural food for birds” in the spring and summer months.

“Hummingbird feeders are not at risk at this point in time, but this is a good reminder to regularly change and clean hummingbird feeders to prevent deadly fungal outbreaks,” said BC SPCA in a media statement. The first call for bird feeders to be removed in the province was made in January. At the time, 43 pine siskins were admitted to BC SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre in Victoria with many showing signs of disease and only a few surviving. —Valerie Leung/Richmond News

Demand for community gardens blooms As of March 23, there are 575 residents waiting for their chance to plant their own flowers, vegetables or herbs.

Kirsten Clarke KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Demand for community gardens in Richmond has “exploded” over the past year, according to the Richmond Food Security Society.

“We’ve seen that the pandemic has really shown the faults in our food system…So that insecurity around food sources has re-

ally pushed people to alternative sources,” said Sarina Clay-Smith, urban agriculture program manager for Richmond Food Security Society, which oversees the city’s community gardens.

“When we rely so heavily on importing foods, it can cause a lot of

people to be worried — like when the pandemic shut everything down — if people are going to be able to source the same food.”

The gardens can also help reduce social isolation and provide a sense of community, said Ian Lai, executive director of Rich-

mond Food Security Society at a city committee meeting last week.

Last year, there were 225 new signups — nearly double the 134 waitlist signups in 2019. So far this year, 46 people have added their names to the list.

Q: How do tankless water heaters work, and how long do they last? Jolene- Richmond

A:

Tankless water heaters work on demand – they only heat water when necessary. Instead of wasting energy and money re-heating and storing water when it is not needed, Tankless Water Heaters provide only as much hot water as needed. Tank type water heaters store and heat water at all times, thus incurring high operating costs. They have a limited supply of hot heater and will run out of hot Water when the tank is drained. Tankless water heaters provide an unlimited supply of hot water – you will never run out. The size of a residential tankless water heater is about the size of a carry-on suitcase and with a few exceptions, can be installed virtually anywhere inside your home. Using a tankless water heater will allow a home to use up to 50% less energy for heating water, which can save hundreds of dollars per year. Tankless water heaters can last 20 or more years, which by todays manufacturing standards, is 2-3 times longer than a traditional Tank type heater. Fortis has some great Rebate Programs to save you money for switching to this hi-efficiency option. The same principles apply for much larger systems, such as a whole building Boiler Room. There is newer, much more energy efficient systems that can save a vast amount of money in operating costs as well as being much more environmentally friendly. Fortis has very large rebate programs for these conversions. Ask us for details.

Food is the best option to get your nutrients, vitamins and minerals. But it is not always easy to consume adequate fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other healthy foods. Supplements such as multivitamins can be a safe way to boost your nutrients. While we all require the same types of nutrients, our age, gender, health conditions affect the level of nutrients required. Among the different types of multivitamins, the main difference between men’s and premenopausal women’s multivitamin is the iron content. When a woman is menstruating, she loses a significant amount of iron which needs to be replaced. On the other hand, supplements for postmenopausal women often have less iron but have higher levels of calcium to help protect the bones. Moreover, multivitamins for age 50+ typically contain more vitamin D. As we age, our skin becomes more difficult to synthesize vitamin D from the sun. Also older adults have reduced absorption of B12 from food-based diet and are at risk of B12 deficiency. Supplements may not be appropriate for everyone as excess intake can lead to unwanted side effects or cause an interaction with other medications. For example, high doses of beta carotene have been linked to greater risk of lung cancer in smokers, extra calcium and vitamin D may increase risk of kidney stones and vitamin K can interfere with the anti-clotting effects of warfarin. To get the most out of your supplements, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. They can help identify your unique needs and review your medication history before choosing a supplement that is right for you.

Waits as long as three years for some gardens

For some gardens, the wait can be as long as three years, Clay-Smith said.

16

At the March 23 parks, recreation and cultural services committee meeting, councillors voted to move ahead with the plan to build 200 community garden

plots on the Garden City Lands this summer.

But more community gardens are needed in Richmond, according to Coun. Harold Steves. “People are really into gardening through the pandemic, and a lot of them are looking ahead

and saying, wow, we’re going into another pandemic…in terms of climate change,” he said at last week’s meeting. “So people are desperate to get garden plots and to get gardening.”

Clay-Smith agreed that there’s a definite need for more community

gardens in Richmond — particularly with such a large waitlist and low turnover at existing plots.

“We don’t have it as a system where you go in for five years, and that’s your time and you move on,” she said. The proposed Garden City Land

plots still need approval from city council and the Agricultural Land Commission before they can be built. Richmond Food Security Society is also looking at expanding its gardens — depending on demand — for example in City Centre or east Richmond, to help ease the waitlist burden.

Q: How does chiropractic work? A: Suzanne Lima,

Chiropractic works because you are a self-healing, self-regulating organism controlled by your nervous system. Millions of instructions flow from your brain, down the spinal cord and out to every organ and tissue. Signals sent back to the brain confirm if your body is working right. Improper motion or position of the moving bones of the spine, called a subluxation, can interfere with this vital exchange by irritating nerves and compromising the function of affected tissues and organs. Specific spinal adjustments can help improve mind/body communications by removing the interference to the nervous system. Health often returns with improved nervous system control of the body. This is why it is so vital to have your spine checked by a chiropractor, to allow your body to express its optimal health potential. Call today for your spinal check up.

Q: Are old Canadian bills worth any money? A:

January of this year 2021, the Bank Of Canada made many Canadian banknotes no long legal tender. All $1 and $2 bills and all $1,000 bills will no longer be accepted in stores for purchases. This also applies to the $25 and $500 bills, but these have high collector evaluations much above their face value. In reality you have been unable to spend these bills in stores for many years. However your bank will still take them deposit them into your bank account. Regarding collector value of these bills, the majority of 1954 &1973 $1 and 1954, 1974 & 1986 $2 bills that are in used condition should just be taken to the bank. If they are in new uncirculated condition all the 1954 bills are worth more than face value. If they are the early printings with the “Devils Face in the Queens hair” the notes can be quite expensive. This “Devils Face” came printed from the $1 - $1,000 bills. All of these 1954 “Devil’s” bills have either the signature combinations of J E Coyne/ G F Towers or J R Beatie /J E Coyne. All Coyne/ Towers signatures are “Devils Face” but not all Beattie/ Coyne. These “Devils” are an illusion when you look at the Queen’s portrait. You can visualize two eyes, a hooked nose and a pair of lips with two horns at the top of the illusion. I find that looking to the right of her hearing and seeing the hooked nose first helps you to see the entire face. For the 1986 $2 bills there is a variety in the three letter prefix at the beginning of the serial number. Those bill having prefixes AUG, AUH, AUJ, AUK, AUL, AUM or AUN may have value depending on signature and condition. We do carry the Charlton catalogue of Canadian Paper money in stock. The price for the 2021 edition is $37.95 plus GST.

Q: What is the difference between having an immediate denture and a denture that is made after I have extractions?

A:

Jim Richardson

Western Coin & Stamp

604-278-3235 6960 No 3 Rd, Richmond, B.C. Email: westerncns@telus.net

Immediate dentures are always best, unless there is so much mobility in your teeth that taking an impression may cause an accidental extraction when the impression is removed. The immediate denture will act as a band aid as well as to help reshape the bone to a kinder more rounded form, rather than leaving the sharp edges that are formed by the circumference of the extraction socket. Follow up must be done by your dental practitioner in order to keep up with the changing shape as the bone and tissue heal. If you have extractions done and the denture is made after a period of couple months then the bone from the circumference of the socket has prematurely healed and is now standing up. When a denture is placed on the tissues, the bone from underneath now stabs you from the inside out. There is one way that you can do the latter method. Once your initial wound site has closed, then you must massage the bone together towards the center of gum. This will tell the body that the bone must reshape to a rounder shape. If you have questions that you would like answered, please don’t hesitate to book a free consultation with my office, or you can write to us via our website to: bcdenturist.com

Shred Event

Saturday, April 24, 2021 • 10:00-2:00 South Arm United Church Parking Lot 11051 No. 3 Road, Richmond

This is a drive-though event with On-site Shredding by Donation Minimum donation amount: $10 per box or bag. What to Shred:

CHORNEY, Susan Connie Jane It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Susan on March 22, 2021, at the age of 65. She was born and raised in Richmond, but later moved to Ladner. She is survived by her daughter Sheri and son in law Bernard. She was a proud grandmother to Max and Zoe. Susan was predeceased by her mother Sylvia, father John, and brother John JR. Susan was a strong lady with a big heart, always taking care of others in the most thoughtful and caring ways. This was evident with her years of service to the community as a home support worker. There will be a small private service held at a later date. Family and friends are invited to share fond memories and condolences at; www.deltafuneral.ca

Delta Funeral Home 604-946-6040

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

FREIBERG, Carol It is with heartfelt sadness, the family of Carol Freiberg announces her peaceful passing, with her family by her side. Carol Freiberg was born July 25, 1935 in Kilronan, Saskatchewan, to parents Rosina (Imhoff) and Nicolas Fuchs. Carol was predeceased by her husband Norman Freiberg (1988), her parents Rosina and Nicolas, sister Rosina Lind, brother Hubert (Frances) Fuchs, brother-in-law Hubert Freiberg, and daughter-in-law Amanda Milford. She will be greatly missed by her children, Hugh Freiberg, Rita Freiberg and Robert Freiberg, grandchildren Megan and Paul, Dalton and Trinity, great grandchildren Mia Joy and Miguel, sister-in-law Ruth (Harold) Schmedding, Lydia, many dear cousins, nieces, nephews, dear and very close friends and neighbours . As a child, Carol enjoyed life on the farm! She especially loved her horse! Carol loved animals and was always holding a cat or two in her arms! Teenage years were spent at the Red Cross barn dances, with her cousins and life long friends! Carol took nursing in Saskatoon, and first worked in the Misacordia Hospital in Edmonton, then later in the Lloydminster Hospital. In 1958, she married her sweetheart from the Kilronan area, Norman Freiberg and they raised three children. Weekends were spent at their cabin at Little Fishing Lake, enjoying water skiing, dirt biking, and the large gatherings of friends and family around the camp fire. Hawaii and Las Vegas was her favourite winter spot! The family moved to St. Albert in 1968, and Carol later worked at the Youville Nursing Home, along with her many close fiends. She loved nursing, loved helping others and loved the friends she met along the way. 1992, brought a move to BC, living in Kelowna, and later spending some fun times living on Vancouver Island. She loved island hopping and Christmas Arts and Craft shows: her artsy talent included stain glass art and quilting. Retiring on the West Coast, on her acreage in South Delta with her family close by her .

Carol was smart, witty, full of mischief, loved to laugh, always had a smile on her face, and of course loved to play crib! Carol absolutely Loved Rock & Roll, and of course Elvis! Mom taught all of us kids and grandkids how to jive, using a tea towel. Carol always helped people in need and the less fortunate! Never spoke a bad word about anybody and always saw the good in everyone! Mom had a slight obsession with Christmas lights and decorations; it was definitely her favourite time of year and we usually started at least a month before. She loved to plan large family gatherings and barbeques with family and friends. Mom absolutely loved flowers and banana splits. Her highlight of everyday was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren! Whether it was watching their concerts at the Sarah MacLaughlin School of Music or playing on their go-carts.

TEASDALE, Clara October 28, 1919 - March 24, 2021 Clarrie passed away on March 24th at Pinegrove Place. She was 101 years young. Clarrie was born in Gateshead, England and immigrated to Canada in 1953, residing in Richmond for over 50 years. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Foster, and her two sisters Joyce Yeaman and Mary Bullen (Binkie). She is survived by her brother-in-law William Bullen, her niece and nephew Susan and David (Tammy), as well as many loving family members in England and B.C. Clarrie had much will and determination, as well as a very generous heart. She will be dearly missed by us all. We can’t thank all of the staff and friends at Pinegrove enough for all of the love, care and friendship they provided to Clarrie. Auntie Clarrie, you can rest peacefully now. Richmond Funeral Home Cremation & Reception Centre (604) 273-3748

All her family, every one of her relatives and every dear friend, and all her pets, each had a special place in her heart and were very important to her. Carol believed in living life to the fullest and every minute was precious. We know you will be with us always... for God now has a new angel in heaven ... it’s never goodbye, rather until we meet again mom!!! To everyone who left a special mark on her heart, we thank you! The family would like to thank the Delta and Richmond First Responders, who went above and beyond with thier care and support. And a special thank you to the Richmond Hospital nursing staff and their medical teams for their exceptional care of our Mother. We are so fortunate to have these caring and compassionate professionals caring for our loved ones. WE THANK YOU ALL! Family and friends are invited to share fond memories and condolences at; www.deltafuneral.ca
