Richmond heroes Lansdowne land history recognized by is woefully incomplete News readers Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank the very kind and wonderful helpers, Beverly and her daughter-in-law, who helped me on Saturday, Jan. 23. I had a bad fall, with injuries that needed attention, while walking in Steveston near the wood
Dear Editor,
Not only did these two ladies call the ambulance, but they contacted my daughter for me and remained with me until the ambulance came. Many thanks to both you and your daughter-in-law, Beverly.

I read about him first a few years ago and am glad that to see the News is still keeping an eye on him.
What the article fails to mention is that in 1876, the Indian Act came to power. This is likely what allowed those lands to be “slowly settled” by farmers.

Allies: Speak up Dear Editor,
Re: “Richmond News reader challenges front page story,” Opinion, Jan. 28 Thank you, Eve Edmonds for using your platform in calling these people out. You are acting as an ally, and most importantly an active bystander and I wanted to thank you. We need more people to speak up against racism. I am on the anti-racism committee at the Richmond School District and I am also a student pursing a degree in Social Justice, so I study and talk about critical race theory a lot. Over the last few months, I have witnessed several forms of racism towards several of my friends. Many times in person, online or more common now on Zoom calls. I have witnessed, by many
people, a range of defensive moves and silence, compliancy, denial and an inability to have a conversation.
supremacy and the City of Richmond has refused to list any acknowledgement of Indigenous history on the city’s website.
When racist behaviour is called out, there are a lot of excuses and ever so common, just silence. Many of these people are well-intentioned but their silence is upholding white supremacy.
So, what is that telling us? As poet and activist Amanda Gorman said, “It’s the past we step into and how we repair it.”
Being uncomfortable and unsure is a part of the process of doing daily anti-racism work. I am learning and unlearning everyday. I am calling on everyone to move past the uneasiness and please speak up. This is a journey for everyone to uncover our own implicit bias and work to end and dismantle systems of oppression and create an antiracist society. Our school system has a painful colonial history built on white
Self reflection is painful but necessary in order to build an equitable and anti-racist community and country. Sometimes, social justice work is isolating, lonely and extremely draining, but when you see that your activism turns into action, it is really rewarding.

Homes needed, not new city projects Dear Editor, Re: “Historic First Nations Bunkhouse in Steveston could be rebuilt,” Online, Jan. 23 Recent news reports suggest some elected representatives and senior city staff are unaware of the devastating financial and psychological impact COVID-19 is having on many Richmond residents. Despite this, city officials continue to fund questionable projects, which will encumber taxpayers with growing annual financial liabilities. I speak of the $19.44 million Phoenix net loft project, the $5.3 million lawn bowling clubhouse, unknown millions for the Lulu Island Park and the continuing financial debacle of our Olympic Oval. Now, we have a new project proposal — rebuilding the First Nations bunkhouse in Steveston for
about $2.05 million. I wonder how Richmond’s homeless community feels about these expenditures? I suggest the bunkhouse history be included in the Phoenix facility history with some salvaged artifacts. Otherwise, restore the bunkhouse to its original purpose and provide housing for homeless persons. While unknown numbers of Richmond businesses and individuals are struggling for financial survival, a majority of city council OK’d a 5.68 per cent tax hike for 2021 (Richmond News, Jan. 21). Does anyone believe 16 new police officers will stop the shootings, drive-bys, arsons, etc. in Richmond, as justification for the tax increase? We really are in the midst of a dangerous pandemic.

Metro Vancouver Transit Police are recommending a charge of assault against a 27-year-old Richmond man who was arrested after a woman was allegedly pushed to the ground at the Richmond-Brighouse Station. The incident took place around 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 22 at the Canada Line Station in central Richmond. Shannon Pang alleges she was walking down the stairs at Richmond-Brighouse station when a man walking the other way made eye contact with her and pushed her over as he passed by. Pang also noted that the man was not wearing a mask, which is in violation of the TransLink mandatory mask policies. The suspect was arrested but has been released from custody with multiple conditions, including not having contact with the victim and not going on Canada Line stations. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 26.
Richmond RCMP are asking for home surveillance or dashcam video after gunshots were heard in Hamilton on Feb. 1. Police said officers were called to the 22300-block of Chaldecott Drive around 12:30 a.m. on Monday after residents reported hearing multiple gunshots. According to the Richmond RCMP, reports suggested gunfire was exchanged between occupants of two separate vehicles that were in the area. The vehicles were seen leaving the scene at a “high rate of speed” when police arrived. No injuries have been reported. “The investigation is still in its
early stages, and investigators are back in the area today speaking with local residents,” said Cpl. Ian Henderson, spokesperson for the Richmond RCMP, adding police are asking witnesses to come forward.
“Residents in the area are also encouraged to check their home surveillance and vehicle dashcams to see if they may have captured the incident on video,” said Henderson. Insp. Michael Cohee, officer-incharge of Investigative Services, said every resident in the Hamilton area has “every right to be concerned” given that the neighbourhood is typically quiet. “Richmond RCMP is committed to promoting safety in our communities, and will continue to actively undertake public safety initiatives within the Hamilton area,” said
Cohee, adding police are “actively investigating” the incident. Police have not said if this is related to the recent gang shootings in the Lower Mainland.
Richmond had two fatal shootings in early January that were linked to an ongoing gang conflict in the Lower Mainland. Since January, there have been a total of six gang-related shootings in the Lower Mainland — five of which have been fatal — and the addition of a recent drive-by shooting in a Langley neighbourhood. Anyone with information is asked to call the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 quoting file number 2021-2939. To remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers at 1-800-2228477.

Squirrel trap angers senior out.”

Advice on the City of Richmond’s website confirms the humane trapping of squirrels is legal, for the purposes of relocating them within a 10-kilometre radius.
ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
A Richmond resident is crying foul after discovering her neighbour is trapping squirrels on top of their shared fence. CJ Miller got upset a few days ago when she heard the squirrels screaming after being trapped in the backyard of the detached homes on Sheridan Street, close to No. 2 and Williams roads. Miller was so incensed she went out to investigate and, upon seeing the squirrels trapped in the wire cage, proceeded to set them free. She has been knocking on her neighbour’s door to ask why they’d set the trap, but nobody has answered. After contacting the RCMP, the City of Richmond and the Regional Animal Protection Society, Miller was
CJ Miller called traps set for squirrels “barbaric.” Photo submitted stunned to be told the trapping of squirrels is actually legal. “I can’t believe this. It’s so barbaric. There’s one there now and I’m going to go out there and release it,” Miller told the Richmond News. “I’ve no idea why they’re trapping them. It’s so primitive, it’s hanging on by some cord and wire. I’ve been lifting the trap door to let them
“Relocation is only recommended outside the breeding season (not from May through August), to prevent separation of females from dependent young, and also potentially adds to the problem of extending the range of this non-native species. Trapping may not accomplish much in the long term, because individuals caught and transferred elsewhere will soon be replaced by others.” The BCSPCA, although also confirming on its site that trapping is legal, advises against it and, instead, suggests using an AnimalKind Accredited company that uses humane methods. Committee keeps rental zone at 10% But restricting rentals in Polygon condos won’t be allowed to vote to restrict rentals.
Kirsten Clarke
But John Roston, co-ordinator of the Richmond Housing Advocacy Group, said the move was “ridiculous” and compared the covenant to passing a bylaw saying that “everybody has the right to ride a bicycle.”
KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
A housing advocacy group was unable to convince Richmond’s planning committee to increase zoning for more market rental units at a proposed development near Capstan Way. However, the committee voted to ban restrictions on rentals at the proposed Polygon development at Garden City and Cambie roads — although it will be up to city council to make a final decision on the issue next week.
Why has council been requiring market rental...if it’s the same as (renting) strata condos?
While the covenant would allow all condo owners to rent out their units if they wanted, Roston pointed out that in B.C., ownerdevelopers can file a rental disclosure statement to allow rentals in strata units for a specified period of time specified, for example, 100 years.
Currently, the city requires 10 per cent of units in new developments be designated for market rental. Roston and the advocacy group, however, had wanted to see 65 per cent of the development zoned for market rental to help make Richmond more affordable. “Why has council been requiring market rental housing in new developments if it’s the same as (renting) strata condos?” What the city is doing, Roston added, is
“creating an army of amateur landlords.” “From the point of view of the market rental landlord…they want the tenant to stay for as long as possible, because that minimizes their turnover costs,” he added. Condo owners, on the other hand, are interested in “ensuring that the tenant has a very short lease. And from the tenants’ point of view, as far as they know, the unit could be sold at any time and they could get kicked out.”
On Tuesday, the five counRather, Roston said that JOHN ROSTON only through zoning can the cillors on the planning committee voted to have a covcity be assured that a minienant for unrestricted rentals mum percentage of the units on all of the units in perpetuity, registered will be rented. on the development’s title with the land title In total, Polygon has proposed 156 afoffice. Man hit with COVID fine
A man who allegedly refused to put on a mask and was “abusive” to airline staff at Vancouver International Airport has been fined under the COVID-19 Related Measures Act (CRMA), according to Richmond Mounties. The incident took place on Jan. 20 in the airport’s domestic terminal, according to Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Ian Henderson.
The 32-year-old Ontario man, who was also allegedly intoxicated, was hit with two violation tickets under the CRMA, each totalling $230 – one was for not wearing a mask or face covering and the other, for abusive or belligerent behaviour. “He was arrested for causing a disturbance and lodged in cells for a time to sober up,” said Henderson. The man was also fined $115 for public intoxication under the BC Liquor Licencing Control Act. The total for the three fines is $575.
demic enforcement action that Richmond RCMP had to take last month, Ng said. 59 new cases
Richmond’s COVID-19 cases continue to remain in the double digits. Between Jan. 22 and Jan. 28, there were 59 new cases in the city, according to the latest data from the BC Centre for Disease Control. (The BCCDC releases data on cases in Lower Mainland health service delivery area Friday afternoons — check RichmondNews.com for updates.) School exposure There was an exposure at James Whiteside elementary on Jan. 25, the health authority posted on its school exposures webpage. Richmond School District superintendent Scott Robinson told the Richmond COVID-19 Community Task Force on Tuesday that to date, there hasn’t been “a single case of transmission in any of (the district’s) schools.”
Overall, travellers at YVR have been “very compliant” with the COVID-19 rules, Richmond RCMP Supt. Will Ng told the Richmond COVID-19 Community Task Force on Tuesday.
According to VCH, an exposure is when a case of COVID-19 was present in the school during their infectious period.

Making Lunar New Year more inclusive
“Sometimes you don’t need grand dancing performances to help people from various cultural backgrounds understand each other’s cultures. Some decorations, a small kind gesture, a kind smile and good storytelling could facilitate understandings and create common ground between us,” said Lao.
Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Colourful Lion Dances, splashy performances and massive crowds doing the traditional “countdown” may not be happening this Lunar New Year thanks to the pandemic, but one Richmondite is still confident she can salvage the festive time by drawing on the support of neighbours. although we live apart, our hearts are together.”
In fact, Eileen Lao thinks Lunar New Year 2021 might be even more inclusive than past ones. Lao was recently inspired by a New Westminster mother who encouraged her neighbours to celebrate the Lunar New Year by putting up decorations on their front doors and in their windows. “This is such a brilliant idea. Throughout the past years, I have been doing similar things, such as hanging up red lanterns and couplets, representing happiness and hopeful thoughts for the coming year,” said Lao. This year, Lao plans to encourage all her neighbours — regardless of whether or not

Lunar New Year is one of the biggest international festivals around the world and is celebrated in various Asian countries. It’s seen as a time for families and loved ones to gather together to enjoy a big meal and honour ancestors. In past years, Lao and her family have attended Lunar New Year events at the Richmond Public Library to learn about Lunar New Year traditions, such as what lucky food to eat on this special occasion. Now she plans to share the history and folklore stories behind the Lunar New Year with her neighbours.
Community activist Karina Reid also shared a post on the Richmond Come Together Facebook group encouraging Richmondites to consider decking out their houses with Lunar New Year decorations. Reid told the Richmond News she was overwhelmed with the positive feedback she has received so far. “There will be lots of people doing the New Year decorations, for example, Richmond-Steveston MLA Kelly Greene said she is going to decorate her doors. It’s like at the beginning of the pandemic, we put hearts in our windows to honour our health-care heroes,” said Reid. The decorations could not only create bright and cheerful neighbourhoods in these dark months, but also show support and solidarity within Richmond’s community.

Gathering together for Aberdeen Centre’s traditional Lunar New Year countdown won’t be an option this year. Rather, a virtual show will be taking its place. Every year, visitors and community members flood the mall’s hallways and central atrium to shop at the flower and gift fair, take photos of the decorations, watch high-calibre performances and participate in the annual New Year’s Eve countdown at Aberdeen Centre — the Lower Mainland’s largest Asian mall.
Tiffany Ho, senior vice-president and senior general manager of Fairchild Developments, which operates the mall, said the year of the Ox will be quiet at Aberdeen, but a change in program format year we won’t undermine the meaning of the Lunar New Year.

“Lunar New Year is a time to gather together and celebrate, but this year we will have to stay safe and celebrate at a distance,” said Ho, adding that Aberdeen Centre’s live countdown program has been running for more than 25 years.

ASK A PROFESSIONAL Q:
Why should I worry about my blood pressure?
A:
Blood pressure is a measure of how much force your heart is pumping blood throughout your body. There are two numbers for your blood pressure readings – systolic pressure (top number) measures the pressure in the arteries when heart contracts and diastolic pressure (bottom number) measures the pressure in the arteries when heart relaxes. In general, blood pressure reading of 120/80mmHg or less is considered within the normal range. Blood pressure can vary throughout the day based on body posture, activity level and emotions. You might have high blood pressure (hypertension) when your blood pressure measurements remain consistently over 140/90mmHg. High blood pressure is also known as the silent killer because it typically can have no symptoms until significant damage had been done to the blood vessels and organs. Often patients are not aware that they have high blood pressure and are at risk for heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease and eye disease. Risk factors for developing hypertension include age, family history, excessive alcohol intake, sedentary lifestyle, obesity and high sodium diet. If you have diabetes, the risk for developing heart disease doubles if your blood pressure is not under controlled. Performing a routine blood pressure check will allow you to identify if you have high blood pressure. While only a doctor can confirm the diagnosis, you can measure your blood pressure using a home device or a visit to the pharmacy. Talk to your pharmacist and doctor to learn more about hypertension.
Q: What is xerostomia? A: Xerostomia is a medical description for dry mouth.
Causes for dry mouth can occur naturally from damage to the salivary glands, high stress situations and from prescription medications. Attention needs to be paid to this condition. When dry mouth occurs, acid levels in your mouth rise and can cause caries (cavities) in your teeth. High acid levels can also cause denture sores resulting from diminished tissue reparability. Diabetics are always at risk for this condition and should closely monitor their salivary flow. Health practitioners can aid their patients with a number of products such as Biotene™ and Xylitol™. Biotene™ is a moisturizer for your mouth. It comes in a toothpaste, mouth wash and a gel for severe xerostomia. Xylitol comes in a toothpaste, mouthwash, mints and gum. The moisturizing action of Xylitol occurs by naturally stimulating your salivary glands and creating a higher flow of your own saliva. Xylitol mints are excellent before physical activity or to have in your pocket during your daily activities. The mints can bring the acid levels in your mouth to a neutral ph. within thirty seconds. Both products are effective and can be used in combination. If you have questions regarding this or any other subject please do not hesitate to call or setup an appointment for a free consultation. You can also go our website at www.bcdenturist.ca for more articles and information.

Travel Insurance changed due to Q: Has COVID-19? A:
Yes! As COVID-19 has evolved, so has the insurance industry and the travel policies available to consumers.
Several travel insurance companies are now offering coverage limits anywhere from $500,000 to $1,000,000 to cover COVID-19 emergency medical care, if you are diagnosed while traveling. Additional coverage such as quarantine expenses and return of a travel companion are often included within these packages. The Covid-19 coverage can be purchased on its own, or as an add-on to your regular travel insurance policy, which we recommend. You cannot purchase Covid-19 coverage when travelling to destinations with a Level 4 travel advisory or if you are going on a cruise. Coverage is simply not available.
Suzanne Lima,
CAIB, CIP Branch Manager – We strongly encourage people to follow all Government issued travel advisories Garden City Earlier this month, it became mandatory for air passengers to show a negative PCR test within 72 hours of boarding their flight, so know what is required before you go! and limit ALL travel unless necessary.
Our Central Agencies Ltd. team is available 7 days a week to answer your Travel Insurance questions and keep you up to date on changes to Covid-19 coverage and premiums. Stay safe and healthy!

Magic TV show in Steveston Nominate for the Arts Awards
A camera crew and staff were in Steveston Village to start shooting a new comedy series on Monday morning. According to Steveston Merchants, the show being filmed is TruTV’s Big Trick Energy, which is supposedly an “unscripted illusionist stun series.”
The series follows best friends and magicians Chris Ramsay, Eric Leclerc, Wes Barker and Alex Boyer who performed various types of magic on each other and unsuspecting spectators in the area.

ASK A PROFESSIONAL is the process to change the Q: What executor of my Will? A::
I’ve seen Silver prices climb dramatically Q: this past week. Do you think this is the start of a run up in silver and would you recommend buying it?
A:
Starting last week and continuing until Monday silver had very strong upward movement. On Monday January 25, silver was priced at $32.75 Canadian. On Monday February 1 silver reached $38.00 before dropping back down on Tuesday. Since the beginning of 2020, when I last wrote an article about silver and gold, both of these precious metals have gone up in value. This time last year (2020) Gold was $1850 Canadian and silver was Jim Richardson Western Coin & $22.50. As of February 2,2021 Gold is $2350 and Silver $34.00. These are Stamp impressive gains of 27% and 50% gains in that year. I believe that both gold and silver will continue to increase in value. The reason Silver had such a big jump from Friday to Monday was because of a push to attempt buying up all the physical silver to raise 6960 No 3 Rd, prices extremely high. Richmond, B.C. Many store and websites sold out because of this demand. Fortunately we still have plenty of silver to sell.

osteoarthritis and was wondering if Q: II have could still visit a chiropractor? A:
wondering if your company maintains or services irrigation systems? Justin - Richmond
A:
Most of the maintenance contracts we have include irrigation systems as a component. We are on site 4 times a year so it makes sense for us to service your irrigation system as well. This would include winterization, spring start up and semi-annual service. Your irrigation system also has a backflow prevention device which protects your drinking water. This device needs to be tested annually by a certified technician and the results have to be filed with your local municipality. We would include this in your maintenance program as well. We service everything from your mechanical equipment in your Boiler Room, to Rooftop Fans, To Hydro-jetting your Drainage lines. We just added a Vac-Truck to our fleet and will soon be using it to flush main lines and suck out catch basins as well. The more you can have one company take care of all your needs, the more time and money you will save. Give us a call if you have any questions.
You can change the executor of your Will (or executrix in the case of a female) in two ways. One way is to make a new Will, which you can do at any time, and appoint a new executor. A new Will normally revokes any previous Will that you have made and thereby would terminate any previously appointed executor. The second way to change your executor is to create a formal written document called a “Codicil” whereby you can change, delete or add clauses to your original Will. To be a legal document, the Codicil must be signed and witnessed in the same manner as a Will. The Codicil must refer to the original Will that is being amended and it should also be attached to the original Will. In any case, the Codicil becomes a valid part of the Will. The decision is whether to make a new Will or prepare a Codicil. Keep in mind that if the Codicil is lost, removed or destroyed, etc., the original Will stands.

Having osteoarthritis (OA), degenerative joint disease, is not a contraindication to being adjusted or treated by a chiropractor. Nor is having osteoporosis, a decrease in bone quantity. In fact, it is extremely unfortunate that individuals who are given a diagnosis of osteoarthritis or osteoporosis are told by their health care practitioner not to see a chiropractor. These individuals miss out on a natural form of health care that can help them cope with many of the symptoms associated with these processes. OA is the most common form of arthritis in men and women after age 40, and affects our joints as well as the structures surrounding them. Chiropractic helps to encourage proper joint function and reduces nerve interference with gentle and effective maneuvers called chiropractic adjustments. Depending on the severity of the osteoarthritis or osteoporosis, adjustments can be modified and low force techniques can be applied. Often patients suffer needlessly with joint pain and stiffness; not realizing the huge impact chiropractic can have on improving their quality of life. Regular chiropractic adjustments help patients stay fit and ready for exercise, in turn warding off OA. Chiropractors take a comprehensive approach to OA prevention, one that includes nutrition, exercise and spinal health. Don’t wait any longer, see what chiropractic can do for you, call and make an appointment today.

Cat-sitting livens pandemic mood
Half a dozen feline friends are keeping one student entertained in isolation Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
As a child, Patrick Zhao dreamed about having a dog, so what’s the post-secondary student doing with six cats? It’s a question he’s asked himself. It all started last summer when “Cat Brother,” the first arrival, came in as a “temporary resident” while his owner went back to China for a visit.

said Zhao.
So, Zhao’s days now consist of feeding, cleaning cat boxes and hopelessly trying to brush the fur off his furniture.
However, Yoomi, the kittens’ mother, is very protective of her babies and will sometimes get into a fight with Cat Brother, who has a “lone wolf” type of personality.
..and he loves it. While others may feel lonely and isolated at this time, Zhao said his six little cuties help keep his spirits up. And the fact all his classes have been moved online means he’s around to enjoy their antics — of which there are plenty.
Gradually, Zhao’s apartment transformed into what he calls “Catland” — because it’s one thing to drop off a cat, but another to pick it up.
After Cat Brother took up residency, someone dropped off a ragdoll cat named Yoomi and her two kittens. They were followed by a nine-month-old British shorthair named Mei Tuan, who was then followed by Tian Mao, the most recent resident and a look-alike to the cat from the American cartoon, Tom and Jerry.

Then word got out among friends and fellow students that Zhao was willing to babysit their cats if they’re going away.
“Cat Brother doesn’t play much with the rest of the group. He walks around the house with an aloof look on his face. Sometimes I feel he is more like a bodyguard,” said Zhao. Mei Tuan, the nine-month-old British Shorthair, may seem a bit shy and lazy at first, but she has a very warm and caring heart, added Zhao. Patrick Zhao is caring for six cats. Kids meals get A&W boost children.

More than 10,000 free meals could be donated to hungry kids in Richmond, thanks to a partnership struck with one of Canada’s leading fast food chains. Mealshare — a Canadian organization founded in 2013 to combat child hunger — has teamed up with A&Ws across the country. For every designated “Mealshare” item ordered at A&W, a dollar will be donated to Mealshare, which then passes the funds to a particular charity’s food program. In terms of Richmond, Mealshare works with the local branch of the Boys & Girls Club of South Coast BC, with the goal to provide around 10,800 meals for hungry
The A&W program works via “Mealshare Mondays,” when customers can order a Cheddar Bacon Uncle Burger Combo and one meal (a dollar) will be provided to a youth in need through Mealshare. Any day of the week, however, customers can do their own “Mealshare” by adding $1 to their order. “(The A&W partnership) will have huge impact for our organization and the charities we support,” Lauren Hennessy, Mealshare’s Vancouver community leader coach, told the Richmond News. “There are nine A&Ws in Richmond, but we’ve partnered with every single one nationwide.” Search A&W for full story at Richmond-News.com

Cement plant capturing CO2 emissions KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Lafarge Canada Inc.’s Richmond plant is one step closer to being the first cement plant in the world to have the technology to recycle carbon emissions from its cement production.
Some of the captured CO2 will be reused on site, for example, in water treatment and fire suppression. However, the goal is to be able to re-invest it into building materials, said Moser.
Lafarge announced that the second phase of its Project CO2MENT, the installation of the Svante CO2 capture unit, is now complete.
Recapture technology a ‘great help’
While the plant will only be capturing a small percentage of the CO2 it emits daily, the technology is a step in the right direction. The unit uses carbon capture technology to trap the CO2 — produced during the cement production — and clean and filter it. This means the CO2 can be captured and, following the project’s next phase, re-used, according to Lafarge, creating the world’s first “full-cycle solution to capture and reuse CO2 from a cement plant.”
but every little bit, so to speak, helps...
PAUL RICHARD,
Depending on daily production, the plant can produce up to 2,000 tonnes of CO2 a day, said Moser, and while capturing one tonne of CO2 is “just scratching the surface,” it’s important to test the technology.
Lafarge will now work on attaching a liquefaction unit that will allow for more
PUZZLE ANSWER IN CLASSIFIEDS
If Lafarge or other cement makers are able to come up with an effective technology, it could make an “enormous dent” in the CO2 emitted from that industry in the coming years, said Paul Richard, an instructor with, and retired chair of, There’s never a Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s environmental prosilver bullet... tection program. “Given that making cement, making concrete, is one of the larger emitters of CO2 and therefore of greenhouse gas throughout the world, anything that’s effective at capturing that part of CO2 is a great help, even if it’s only ever usable for concrete-making,” he said.
KPU INSTRUCTOR While the Richmond plant previously installed a lowcarbon fuel system to replace “There’s never a silver bullet, there’s nevthe use of fossil fuels, CO2 is still created during cement production when limestone er one thing that can be done to get us out is heated in the kiln, said Jonathan Moser, of our (climate) predicament, but every litLafarge Canada’s head of environment tle bit, so to speak, helps in that respect.” and public affairs. While other industries such as oil are The Richmond plant will be able to cap- also working on carbon capture and storture about one tonne of CO2 per day to age technologies, said Richard, those start, and possibly up to 200 tonnes this projects are capital-intensive and it hasn’t been demonstrated that they’re practical. year.
“Right now, because of the carbon footprint we have at Richmond, we ultimately want to capture more than one tonne of CO2 and look to expand to go up to 50 tonnes, (which) would be the next phase of the project once we prove out this pilot phase.”

The pandemic has changed everything from how we greet each other to how we shop. So, not surprisingly, it has also changed what we need to do to get a job. To provide some tips on how to negotiate the ever-changing work landscape, the Richmond News spoke with Chen Liu, Ph.D., director of the Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) program at Trinity Western University. Liu said, with companies pivoting to online, virtual meetings are becoming the “new normal,” which means people looking for work need to equip themselves with the relevant digital and communication skills. “If you plan to go for job interviews, you need to learn how to present yourself in front of the camera and how to interact
with your colleagues and customers remotely,” said Liu. Job seekers also need to remember that the only constant in the workplace is change, especially in a post-coronavirus world, said Liu. So, while the current job market might seem bleak, this is the perfect time to take courses to improve yourselves so you’re ready to go when the situation changes. Meanwhile, Liu recommends people, employed or not, work on their soft skills, such as being more disciplined and thoughtful regarding their employers and colleagues. “You need to be more disciplined, especially if you are not working in the office and your boss isn’t around. Be more thoughtful about your company and your colleagues because all businesses are suffering,” said Liu. Search “job market” for full story at Richmond-News.com

Freshness the key for serving up sensational sushi
South Asianinspired flavours offer tasty new take on pizza
T
ired of ordering the same old pizza?
Well, for what’s new in pizza, Round Table Pizza, located across from Liquor Town at Blundell Centre, has added three Sou uth Asian-style selections to its already extensive menu.
Jack Chahal, owner of the restaurant since it opened in the mall in 2012, says the trio of shahi paneer, butter chicken and tandoori chicken pizzas offer a special alternative when you’re feeling adventurous and want a pizza with a difference.
“Those are all Indian-inspired pizzas and have proven to be very popular,” says Chahal, adding he tapped into his own ethnic tradition to provide the authentic recipe for the pizzas. The Shahi pizza features butter sauce, onions, bell peppers, tomatoes and shahi paneer - a special Indian cheese. “It’s full of wonderful flavours, and a good option for those who are vegetarians,” Chahal says. For another authentic South Asian taste, the butter chicken pizza combines onions, green peppers, tomatoes, tomato sauce, and marinated butter chicken. “E Every yone knows butter ch hicken for itts speciall taste. We just decided to put itt on a pizza, which has beco ome a hit wiith custome ers,” Chahal says.
“They are a great compliment to our popular, regular pizzas, including the everything, which is just like it sounds with salami, pepperoni, ham, beef, Italian sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, pineapple, tomatoes and cheese,” Chahal says. Other classic favourites include the Hawaiian special with ham, cheese and pineapple, and the meat lovers with pepperoni, salami, ham, Italian sausage, beef and cheese. And with a variety crusts to choose from - regular, thin, low-carb cauliflower, plus two types of gluten-free options - you can strike the combination that’s tailored specifically for you. Pizza isn’t the whole story at Round Table Pizza. The menu also includes baked lasagna and spaghetti, both with meat sauce and a side of garlic bread. Plus, you can add some chicken wings to your meal with breaded hot wings, honey garlic, barbecue, buffalo, and salt and pepper to choose from. “We can provide a complete, wonderful meal for you and your family, or frriends, with plenty of variety thatt is sure to please everyone,” Chahal says. Right now w, Round Table Pizza is open justt for pick-up p or delivery.
And d the tandoori chicken pizza packs the time-h honoured taste of a cla ay oven ro oasted chicken … on a pizza a.
“Hopefu ully, when the COVID-19 9 pandemic is over we e can welcome custom mers back in nto our restaurant,” Chahal says.
“These pizzas are taken from th hree, already y very popular Indian dishes,” Cha ahal says. “Putting them on a pizza is un nique. And people love it.
