I agree totally with Coun. Carol Day and others who are urging the City of Richmond to provide Richmond firefighters with additional training and capabilities required to provide lifesaving treatments to people needing such assistance in emergency situations.

It is folly and a waste of critical time and resources not to provide such training to firefighters, especially during this chaotic time when so many of city and provincial health-related services are already stretched to the limit, here and around the province. This issue should be of the highest priority to city council and all related municipal and provincial services.

As a long-time Richmond taxpayer, I’m willing to pay higher taxes to ensure such essential services are properly funded and developed in a timely manner. This is not the time for procrastination and studies. We are in a crisis situation and we must respond accordingly.

The roads I cycled on were quiet and uncongested, and my customers were always extremely grateful for my deliveries.

The paper shacks existed across Richmond in the 1950s when I was both a carrier and shack “manager.”

My job as a manager was to unpack the bundles of papers the trucks would drop off, count out each carrier’s individual allotments and stack them on their assigned spots on long counters, make inspirational posters for the interior walls and generally keep the shack clean and locked.

Large subdivisions were just starting to be built in Richmond in the 1950s and paper carriers had a lot of territory to cover between the farms and widely dispersed homes, so it was very important that we were in good physical shape and had bicycles and racks that were solid.

We had large canvas bags for the papers which we carried crossed over our shoulders, which could

make balancing on your bicycle a real challenge. We were quite thankful that Richmond was flat, although some of us had routes that took us along unpaved roads which became very problematic in the winter.

I have many fond memories of my days as both a carrier and shack manager — a time before the farmers’ fields were taken over by housing subdivisions and “downtown” Brighouse was a two-lane road lined with mom & pop stores and the boarded-up stands of the old Minoru

Christmas time could be bountiful, and sometimes the collection of gifts, vegetables and fish that were given to me out-weighed the load of papers I had just delivered.

The newspaper shacks, and the gatherings of young boys and their bikes waiting out front for their turn to pick up their allotments were a familiar sight in Richmond and an integral part of my experience of growing up here in the 1950s.

It’s gratifying that Ken Gulliman’s Facebook post elicited a flood of responsive recollections, because it has provided evidence that this is a part of Richmond’s history that has not yet been totally forgotten.

City needs to tackle gang violence Use old routes for train travel Dear Editor,

Two shootings, two dead bodies — one in the heart of Steveston Village, another in City Centre.

Gang violence presents a clear and present danger to public safety in Richmond and Metro Vancouver.

Too many times we have heard about innocent bystanders who were hurt or killed because they happened to be “in the wrong place at the wrong time,” when gangsters’ bullets were flying.

While there is no doubt that police agencies throughout Metro Vancouver are working hard to solve the recent homicides, including in our own public spaces, it is time to acknowledge that a gang war is raging.

I served over 35 years in law enforcement. In that time, I led the establishment of what became the VPD’s Uniform Gang Task Force.

I saw first hand how to fight gang crime.

One tactic we used in Vancouver was disrupting gangsters where they socialized, whether that was a club, a gym or a restaurant. We made life hell for them, arresting them for even minor offences.

We sent a clear message — we see you, we’re watching you, we’re coming for you.

City council has a role to play in putting down the gang war too — they and the provincial government can do this by supporting police through budgets. Richmond city council must ensure that our local RCMP detachment has the support and the resources it needs to combat growing gang violence.

City council can also support efforts to make gang violence a top priority for B.C.’s solicitor general and consider potential legal solutions to assist police and keep the community safe.

Gangsters do not care about public safety; violence is their currency and they don’t care who gets in their way. Even as shootings target gang members, the public is always at risk. City council must make community safety a top priority. They must uphold the rights of law-abiding residents to feel safe walking through our parks or down No. 3 Road. A coordinated, comprehensive approach is needed to ensure the roots of gang violence are pulled from our city. The work starts by ensuring council ensures the tools are in place to make it happen.

Dear Editor, The best way to lower the cost of mass transit would be using disused or low used railway right of ways for LRT configured with tram/train technology as it will save significantly on the life cycle costs given that the authorities can acquire the right of way, such as the Marpole Line, at net salvage value under the Canadian Transportation Act. Future planning could use the former inter urban to Steveston, which is already owned by the City of Richmond, with a variation from Garden City Road onto Alderbridge Way to Westminster Highway, then through Minoru Park to Granville,

which runs into Railway Avenue, the latter was the Inter Urban rail route to Steveston.

It will catch the ridership from the KPU’s campus, the backdoors of Richmond Hospital and Richmond City Hall.

Installing LRT tracks into the Deas Tunnel Replacement will provide a rail crossing over the Fraser River to Delta.

This could be approached from Steveston and/or Shell Road right of way. This is because LRT, at grade, is more flexible than subways and/ or elevated lines.

City OKs 5.68% tax hike COVID-19 rate drops by half Maria Rantanen

Richmond property taxes will increase by 5.68 per cent in order to include hiring 39 new emergency personnel staff, which translates into an average tax increase of $99 per home.

This includes 16 new RCMP officers, 11 municipal employees to support the RCMP and 12 new fire fighters.

While city staff recommended a 2.9-per-cent budget increase and to defer hiring new RCMP officers, the majority of council voted to go ahead with budgeting for all 39 new emergency personnel.

The estimated tax increase of about $99 per household in Richmond is based on the average assessed value of $996,000. This will be in addition to a two-per-cent increase in utilities, which is esti-

mated to be about $28 for a singlefamily home.

There has also been an increase in domestic violence.

Coun. Bill McNulty proposed going for the higher budget to include 16 new police officers and firefighters, saying Richmond needed to keep “safety first.”

“It’s very difficult to draw a direct correlation,” she said.

“We’ve had shootings, we’ve had drive-bys, we’ve had arsons, we’ve had all kinds of issues that we haven’t seen before in Richmond that only existed in other municipalities in surrounding areas,” McNulty said.

He added the difference was only about $31 per household.

When asked by Coun. Carol Day, however, whether there was any detrimental effect of not bringing in new police officers last year, Cecilia Achiam, general manager of community safety, said, while crime numbers and mental-health calls have gone down during the pandemic, police have been used for COVID-19 enforcement.

Coun. Michael Wolfe argued for lowering the number of police officers and to defer hiring 12 new firefighters.

He pointed out a consultant’s report, referenced in the budget documents, states the 12 firefighters won’t be needed in Steveston/ Seafair until 2023, and the 24 additional firefighters in City Centre won’t be needed until 2027.

However, council approved 36 new firefighters already in 2019, to be rolled out over three years.

The mayor as well as Couns. McNulty, Linda McPhail, Harold Steves and Alexa Loo voted in favour of more RCMP officers and firefighters. (Coun. Chak Au recused himself from the firefighter vote.)

The budget will come back for a final vote at a later council meeting.

The number of COVID-19 cases detected in Richmond in the previous week dropped by half.

COVID-19 outbreaks have persisted at Minoru Residence and Fraserview Intermediate Care Lodge.

There were 69 new cases, as reported by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) last Friday.

So far, 70 residents and staff have tested positive at Minoru and there have been seven deaths.

In the week before, the BCCDC reported 145 new cases in Richmond.

At Fraserview, 41 people have tested positive — both staff and residents — and there have been six deaths.

The total number of COVID-19 cases detected in Richmond since the beginning of the pandemic was 1,711 as of last week.

However, the BCCDC cautions that not everyone who has COVID-19 is tested and it could be circulating undetected in the community.

Police delayed at hospital

Richmond RCMP spent on average 97 minutes at the hospital in November when they had to bring in a mental-health patient.

This was the highest average time in 2020, but Richmond RCMP’s officerin-charge Supt. Will Ng said they have been working on the process and have reduced this by about 30 minutes.

It’s particularly challenging because Richmond Hospital doesn’t have a holding room for mental-

health patients, Ng said, but this is something they’re working on.

Security staff at hospitals don’t necessarily have the proper training to deal with mental-health patients, he added, so police have to make sure there’s a proper “handoff” so the patient is secure.

If someone escapes from the hospital, it takes up even more police resources than just waiting until they are handed over to hospital staff, Ng

explained at last week’s community safety meeting.

Last year, a mental-health patient escaped from the hospital and stole a police cruiser.

“That caused quite a melee down the street,” Ng said. “So, we want to prevent those kinds of incidents from happening.”

There were 135 mentalhealth calls in November in Richmond.

Free menstrual products coming Most Richmond public facilities will be getting free menstrual products.

This was the unanimous decision of city council on Monday and they asked staff to come back with an implementation plan.

Richmond resident Laura Greenwood, who approached Coun. Carol Day recently asking for the initiative, told council the issue is about equity, gender equality and dignity.

She pointed out other products, such as toilet paper, soap and water, are

provided automatically in washrooms.

“Providing menstrual products sends a message to people who menstruate that their health and presence and participation in the community is valued and supported,” Greenwood told council.

A Proctor & Gamble study found onequarter of Canadian women say they struggle to afford menstrual products.

Bird-killing cats still free to roam Maria Rantanen

Richmond won’t be changing its bylaws any time soon to stop cats from killing birds, but the city will try to educate the public on this threat to wildlife.

Richmond city council wants RAPS and the BC SPCA to help educate residents on keeping cats safe and preventing them from killing birds.

A motion by Coun. Michael Wolfe at Monday’s committee meeting to change Richmond’s cat-related bylaws was rejected by the majority of council with only Couns. Wolfe, Carol Day and Harold Steves in favour.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie said he’d rather work on the issue with RAPS and BC SPCA, which will be taking over the contract for Richmond’s animal shelter.

“Just because it happens in Richmond doesn’t make it a city responsibility,” Brodie said.

Wolfe’s motion was to update cat-related bylaws and educate the public in order to “reduce the number of bird and other wildlife-related fatalities from the teeth and claws of domestic cats.”

Wolfe explained in his rationale for the motion that the domestic cat contributes every year to the death of between 100 to 350 million birds world-wide.

There are no numbers for Richmond, which doesn’t have a significant feral cat problem, in part thanks to the RAPS cat sanctuary.

Regardless, Wolfe claims free-roaming cats are the “most problematic,” with many leaving “dead ‘presents’” for their owners.

“When humans have introduced animals into local ecosystems where they do not belong, they can wreak havoc,” Wolfe elaborates.

Solutions suggested by Wolfe’s motion include training cats to stay indoors or only allowing them out on leash and under supervision.

The city’s public works and transportation committee voted in favour of the motion on Tuesday. However, it will still need to go to city council for final approval.

“Effects from anticoagulants on local wildlife including raptors are widely noted, which suggests that these substances are entering Richmond’s animal food chain regularly,” the report reads. “Some instances of accidental human poisoning due to the improper maintenance of bait stations on private property was also noted by staff.”

The city’s existing rodent management program is centred on the use of anticoagulants, which is inexpensive and doesn’t require much staff oversight, according to a city staff report.

The report notes there’s limited information on the distribution of rodents in Richmond, as well as the effectiveness of anticoagulants in managing rodent populations.

The annual cost of using non-pesticide methods, such as snap traps, will be $67,000.

Moving away from anticoagulant use will cost the city more and require additional staff time, the report notes, and it might take away from other buildingrelated matters.

Students across Richmond and the Lower Mainland took part Friday in a somewhat impromptu inaugural Black Shirt Day.

Barrington made headlines last summer when she decided to stand up in front of thousands of people at a BLM rally in Vancouver to talk about her life story of racist abuse.

A petition started recently by the Anti-Racism Coalition of Vancouver to have Jan. 15 declared Black Shirt Day was too late for the B.C. Ministry of Education’s Dec. 4 deadline for an official proclamation.

But it gained enough grassroots support for students and schools to recognize the day themselves, much like the anti-bullying Pink Shirt Day and the Indigenous awareness of Orange Shirt Day.

One proud Richmond mom, La Toya Barrington, packed her three kids off to school on Friday in their custom-printed Black Lives Matter (BLM) T-shirts.

“I just got my friend to make (the shirts) this week for me. People saw my shirt and asked me to get one for them,” added Barrington.

She said she hopes Black Shirt Day — which coincides with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday — will become an official day of anti-racism every year.

Black Shirt Day is not only about racism awareness, it’s also about sparking conversation and change, according to the chair of the Richmond Board of Education.

Sandra Nixon said days such as Black Shirt Day build awareness around “social and historical issues and help spark conversations” in schools and classrooms.

“Racism awareness is extremely important to the Richmond Board of Education,” said Nixon.

“The timing of Black Shirt Day, a few weeks before Black History Month, helps to build interest in learning about the contributions of Black Canadians and also about antiracism overall.”

Many students, families and staff from the Richmond School District and across the Lower Mainland took part in Black Shirt Day campaign on Friday.

The day was a grassroots initiative started by the AntiRacism Coalition of Vancouver, which petitioned to have Jan. 15 declared Black Shirt Day. The day happens to coincide with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

While the petition may have missed the B.C. Ministry of Education’s Dec. 4 deadline for an official proclamation, there were lots of posts last week on social media with the hashtag #BlackShirtDay to promote the campaign.

The day allowed staff to promoted “deeper learning about the issue” and gave them the opportunity to promote learning materials such as their newly acquired antiracism book bundles in school libraries, said David Sadler, spokesperson for the Richmond School District, on Friday.

“Many teachers and teacher-librarians (took) the opportunity to highlight this collection in connection to Black Shirt Day,” he added.

According to Nixon, the school board also recently approved the formation of an Anti-racism and Diversity Working Group, which aims to consult with students, staff and other stakeholders about their experiences with racism within the school district.

The working group, she added, will discuss how the district is approaching educating students around forms of racism including reviewing district policies and practices on incidents of racism and identifying gaps that the districts need to address.

An anti-racism awareness campaign is also being launched in the province as part of a $1.9 million investment to make B.C. a more safe and inclusive place for everyone.

A Holiday Season to Remember A lot of things didn’t happen in 2020. They were postponed or cancelled because…well, you know why.

The Richmond Christmas Fund could have been among them. But, against all odds, it wasn’t. Thanks to a remarkable outpouring of community generosity, the Christmas Fund went ahead, and as a result, 2,866 of our neighbours in need experienced the magic and joy of a holiday celebration.

To run the program safely, we completely re-imagined it. We registered clients online, over Zoom. Families were given specific times to come and pick up their items – a combination of toys, books, grocery vouchers, and gift cards, all pre-packaged based on household size and composition. Distribution happened almost entirely outdoors, with volunteers donning gloves, masks, and face shields, and interacting with clients from behind acrylic barriers. We went through gallons of hand sanitizer.

Those are the logistics, the steps we took simply to run the Christmas Fund. The other part of the story – the most important part – is the way in which the community came together and rallied around our cause. We were overwhelmed and overjoyed by the support we received.

The Richmond RCMP held their annual toy drive, turning it into a drive-through event. They collected more donations than ever before – enough to fill four storage lockers.

The Richmond Auto Mall’s Windows of Hope fundraiser couldn’t happen in person, but dealerships, suppliers, and sponsors still contributed to the Christmas Fund. In fact, they set a new record, giving $40,250.

And a committee of 12 community leaders, headed by Wayne Duzita, Rob Howard, and Michael Chiu, organized the Christmas Fund’s first ever online auction, A Not So Isolated Night. More than 120 people participated, and the digital event raised over $36,000.

There are so many donors to recognize, so many volunteers to thank, so many supporters to acknowledge. That’s the part that overwhelms us. In 2020, we put out a call for help, because we needed it like never before. And the community’s response was so resounding that we can never fully express our gratitude.

During a global pandemic, at the end of an exhausting year, the Christmas Fund happened, made possible not by a miracle, but the collective effort of an entire community. Richmond’s giving spirit has never burned brighter.

A man previously convicted of impersonating an RCMP officer in Richmond will be getting a new trial after successfully appealing his case.

In her reasons for supporting the appeal, Justice Jeanne Watchuk stated there was direct evidence available that wasn’t proffered by the Crown.

“The circumstantial evidence relied upon does not prove an element of the offence…” Watchuk wrote in her Dec. 31, 2020 reasons for judgment.

Watchuk noted there were “other inferences available on the circumstantial evidence.”

According to a BC Supreme Court judgment, Edmund Paul Kovlaske allegedly falsely represented himself as an RCMP officer while he was shopping for an electric bike in Richmond in September 2018.

He was sentenced in March 2020, after an October 2019 trial convicted him of a sole count of impersonating a peace officer.

Kovlaske, who was allegedly seen on a surveillance video from a neighbouring business, left the store after the owner told him the bike wasn’t ready.

In his appeal, Kovlaske alleged the trial judge’s ruling that the Crown had proven the offence beyond a reasonable doubt was made in error.

As a result, he asked the BC Supreme Court to uphold his appeal and enter a verdict of acquittal.

A man accused of multiple break-ins and mail thefts in Richmond has been arrested and charged.

He has now been charged with an additional 13 counts of break and enter.

The Richmond Art Gallery (RAG) is hosting an exhibition about violence faced by queers and people of colour.

The exhibition, Inaction, opening Feb. 12, aims to find change in “collective action” through sculptural and performance-based installations by Canadian contemporary artist Brendan Fernandes.

There are two components to the exhibition: nine works of sculpture and the Canadian premiere of Fernandes’ video performance titled Free Fall: for the Camera.

According to Fernandes, the video was originally a response to a shooting at an Orlando nightclub, Pulse, in 2016, but he said “the work needs to continue” since many are still being “marginalized” because of their bodies.

“As a society, we’re finding about how hard we can fall, but also how to stand up, move forward and move on,” said Fernandes.

“With Black Lives Matter and other socio-political uprisings gaining momentum, it’s important to seek out our freedom and rights.”

He added the COVID-19 pandemic is an extension of how people are figuring out what is a safe space and what their bodies need during this time.

Meanwhile, the mobile dance supports and sculpture installations, created in collaboration with Chicago-based architecture firm Norman Kelley, are “activated” by the audience and dancers interacting with them.

Lenin needs home In an update to last week’s catching up on whatever happened to the Lenin/Miss Mao work of art, the controversial piece is now in a Vancouver warehouse.

The Richmond News reported last week the massive chrome sculpture’s last known location was in the Mojave Desert in California, minus Miss Mao from atop its head.

“We have to find a place to exhibit or store it, or even sell it,” the brothers wrote to the News.

Getting up at dawn every day in January and walking 30 kilometres, without a definitive goal, would be challenging for even the most motivated of athletes.

But that’s just how Richmond’s Olympic racewalker, Evan Dunfee, was feeling near the end of 2020, training in all weather with the prospect of the rearranged Japan Games taking place this summer looking slimmer by the day.

Throw in the fact that he’s normally in the significantly warmer climes of Australia this month, training with fellow competitors, and you can see how putting one foot in front of the other lacks appeal.

Dunfee, however, then discovered a January fundraiser for KidSport BC – for which he is an ambassador – called “Camp KM,” a virtual distance challenge during January, organized by Canada Run Series.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Dunfee had raised $5,878.05 of his $6,000 target, with 12 days still to go in the month.

So now, the Richmond athlete, who has already qualified for the Games in Tokyo (should they proceed), has been aiming to raise $10 for every kilometre he walks this month, with a $6,000 target from his regular 600 km monthly ground coverage.

“A teammate from Quebec is in Vancouver for the month, so I walked from my house at Railway and Granville to False Creek and then out to Stanley Park (which is apparently 30 km).”

Dunfee hopped on the train on his return, which is fair enough, considering the walk to Vancouver took about two and half hours.

Next Monday, Jan. 25, marks the annual celebrations around the world of the birth of Robert (Robbie) Burns, the Scottish poet famous for writing Auld Lang Syne.

A Steveston store is going nuts about a regular “customer” who apparently keeps sneaking in to steal stuff when their backs are turned. Best of British, a U.K. product store on First Avenue at Moncton Street, took to social media this week to appeal to the better nature of a rather determined squirrel. According to the store’s Instagram account, the grey squirrel has been making “regular visits” for a couple of years to try and get his claws on a British favourite, Walnut Whips.

The day is usually marked by a traditional “Robbie Burns Night” or supper, whereby full Highland dress is encouraged, a haggis is ceremonially sliced open, poetic verses are proclaimed and, of course, whisky is the drink of choice.

Despite the lack of pipers, kilts, haggis and whisky this year, a Scots heritage organization — the Clan MacLeod of Greater Vancouver Society — is still determined to make sure the day doesn’t pass without some kind of acknowledgement.

KPU tech apparel students graduate challenges.

The students from KPU’s technical apparel and design program in Richmond have graduated, virtually, taking with them a whole host of inventions that have a specific purpose.

Another student, mechanical engineer Joel Maerz, designed the “Chinuuk,” a weatherproof, alpine-capable pack built from a repurposed waterproof shell.

Some of their creations included a personal flotation device to paraclimbing pants for people with spinal cord injuries.

Hanae Yaskawa, who designed the pants — called “Resilience Climbing Pants — said the name is a nod to the abrasion-resistant quality, as well as a recognition of the spirit of athletes who find creative ways to navigate a world not designed for them.

“I was inspired by athletes who train and perform with the added challenge of living with a disability,” said Yaskawa, originally from California, before moving to Boston to study physics and Italian.

“Simply put, waterproof breathable shells are not recyclable. The inspiration for my design comes from just asking the question ‘okay, but what can we do about it?’” said Maerz.

Originally from Calgary, Maerz now works for the development team at Vancouver-based Stoko Design Inc. and says he is exactly where he wants to be — designing supportive apparel.

They also work directly with local industry including Arc’teryx and Mustang on their capstone projects.

Unlike past years, when the public was invited to view the designs and meet the designers, this year the graduation and showcase took place online.

“Year after year, the students from the…program leave us in awe of their innovative design solutions for the performance issues they address. Congratulations to the graduating class,” said Andhra Goundrey, dean, KPU’s Wilson School of Design.

If happiness had a smell, it might be that of a glazed, fluffy soft donut. At least that’s according to Zach Berman, who will be hosting a donut pop-up event this Saturday in Steveston.

On Jan. 27, Juice Truck on First Avenue in Steveston will team up with Payton Lum, famous on Instagram under the name Payts. Lum is a McGill student in the food science program who specializes in making vegan sourdough donuts.

Berman, co-founder and co-owner of Juice Truck — a cold-pressed juice company which now operates six locations in B.C., including one in Steveston — told the Richmond News this wasn’t the first time for them to collaborate with Payts to set up a donut pop-up event. On Jan. 15, they sold more than 400 vegan donuts within 30 minutes at their Steveston’s store.

Cosmic bowling gone It has been on death row for almost a year now, but the building housing the popular Lois Lanes Cosmic Bowling in Hamilton has finally been demolished.

Pictures of the demolition posted on a community Facebook page by Jesslyn Payne, brought happy memories flooding back for Richmond residents past and president.

The bulldozers and wrecking ball moved in last week to clear the former ten-pin bowling alley and grocery store locations at Bridgeview Shopping Centre on Gilley Road, close to Westminster Highway.

Payne, herself, recalled how, if the front pin was painted pink, and you got a strike, you got a free two-litre bottle of pop.

The buildings are being demolished to make way for 225 residential units in two towers, with shops below in 2,415 square feet of retail space.

While another resident on Facebook had even more vivid memories, remembering a red pin on lane two, where, if you got a strike, you won a flat of Pepsi.

Travel ban unwelcome by tourism sector Conversations about banning out-of-province travellers will make Richmond — and the rest of the province — seem like an unwelcoming place, and that will take a long time to recover from, according to Tourism Richmond’s CEO Nancy Small.

Premier John Horgan said last week he was looking at a travel ban, depending on legal opinions, in order to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Talking about a travel ban also pits residents against travellers, Small said, as has been witnessed when out-of-province licence plates have been spotted and posted on social media.

In response, the Tourism Industry Association of BC said a ban would “further cripple a sector that is barely hanging on by a thread.”

Instead of an out-of-province travel ban, Small said, Richmond should be projecting a message about being a safe destination.

While following provincial health orders is necessary, Small said the discussion about keeping Richmond and B.C. in a “bubble” is not helpful.

Richmond should think about its reputation as a city welcoming people from around the world, she said.

“This is about reputation and this is about being a welcoming destination,” Small added.

Instead of banning tourists, she would like to see messaging about the safety protocols local tourist businesses have implemented, like social distancing, rapid testing and enhanced cleaning to ensure tourists come

A Richmond skating club has produced two more provincial title winners on the ice.

Two athletes from the Connaught Skating Club — David Li and William Chan — won the titles last week to earn a spot in the Skate Canada National Championship Cup, which has since been cancelled due to the pandemic.

David, who won the Novice Men’s Championship, said the biggest challenge he’s had this season has been mastering the triple, triple combination and triple loop jump.

William, who won the Pre-Novice Men’s Championship, said his best memory of the competition was “skating two flawless programs under intense pressure.”

BUSINESS SERVICES BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IRELAND, Garrett Garret was born on January 5th, 1937 in the Republic of Ireland, Dublin, and passed away on October 15th, 2020, in Richmond, British Columbia Canada. His remains were cremated on October 27th, 2020 at the Forest Lawn Crematorium in Burnaby, British Columbia. His ashes will be eventually spread in Dublin at a later date.

Garrett was a character and a consummate gentleman who had a big heart, a keen wit, and a most enjoyable sense of humour. He could often be quoted for some of his most humorous quips.

Such as, “Dryer than a popcorn fart”, “Is that yourself?” and “How bout that”, just to mention a few. He made many people laugh often. He was born into an Irish Catholic family as one of 17 children and enjoyed a number of pursuits, such as cycling, pugilism, art and philosophy.

For it was in the late 1950’s and into the 60’s, where he would take on all comers, as an exhibitionist pugilist, on the exhibition fairgrounds, just outside of London, in Salsbury, England. This is where he eventually met his beloved wife Carilyne.

Garrett defined the saying, “The Fighting Irish”, both figuratively and literally.

He emigrated to Vancouver, Canada with his beloved wife, Carilyne in 1969, and became a Canadian citizen shortly thereafter. He raised a family and worked primarily in the interior and exterior residential contracting field, for over 45 years. He had the soul of an artist and was a very hard worker, with an incredible constitution, and he eventually retired in 2012 at the age of 76.

He enjoyed “The Beautiful Game”, of soccer, and was an avid Vancouver Whitecaps fan and a keen Manchester United supporter as well. He attended many home games at the old Empire Stadium, with his son Seauin, as season ticket holders. And he also enjoyed watching his son play for numerous soccer clubs.

We want to give a huge thank you to all the doctors, medical and nursing staff at the Richmond General Hospital, for their expert care and attention in the last few years of Garrett’s life, as he battled a lung disease. As well, a special thank you to his personal family physician, Dr. Alwin Lui and his specialist, Dr. Edgar Lau, for their dedication and professionalism to his care and comfort. Garrett wished to pass away at home with his son by his side and he did. This was made possible with the fantastic help of the Paramedical Services of Richmond.

“I will miss you dad. Thank you for being my dad and loving me as your son. I will forever cherish the memories and the laughter. You helped make me a better person. A better man. Get some rest now and I will see you soon..” It would only be fitting to finally quote the Irish saying our family enjoyed reciting from time to time.

“Live everyday as if it were your last, and one day you’ll be right”. “I love you dad.”

BAYLEY, Eva Mae April 3, 1933 − January 17, 2021 It is with great sadness that the family of Eva "Mae" Bayley announces her passing on Sunday, January 17, 2021, at the age of 87 years. Mae is survived by her husband of 58 years, Walter; her daughter, Carolyn; her son, John (Nadine); and her grandson, Ryan.

Mae loved taking care of her family, playing the organ and singing in the choir. She enjoyed being involved with her church, volunteering her time by helping out with services, activities and special events. She will be greatly missed for her storytelling, good nature and sweet personality.

Due to the pandemic, there will be a small gathering with immediate family members only.

De KOSTER, Elizabeth Ellen May 17, 1927 - January 13, 2021 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth (Betty) De Koster (nee Dunsmore), our dear Mum and Nana, at the age of 93. Elizabeth was predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, Godfried (2019). As the last of six brothers and sisters, she is also predeceased by her dear sister Molly Palin, four brothers, Allan, Peter, John and Richard, and many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Elizabeth is also survived and dearly missed by daughter Dorothy (Bruce), son Phillip (Kathryn), and grandchildren Craig (Savana), Sarah, Stephanie (Michael), and Richard. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews around the world.

Never one to complain, Betty was first and foremost resilient and selfless. She worked tirelessly to care for her family as a loving and devoted wife, Mum and Nana. She was a helpful, patient and kind friend, volunteering her time at a local elementary school in her retirement, and loved to spend her down time being creative with knitting, cross-stitch, sewing, reading and crosswords. Afternoon tea time was a must in Betty’s home, and no one could make a cup of tea quite like her. She was often reserved, but with a smile, a look, or a comment, she had a knack for making those around her laugh and enjoy her company even more. Those who survive her will miss her dearly but take great comfort in knowing she is now at peace. At Betty’s request, there will be no service. Expressions of sympathy, can be made through a donation in her memory to the Canadian Lung Association.

Rest in peace, Mum. We love you.

WILSON, Jane (Jean) Arthurson Born January 30, 1932 in Glasgow, Scotland; died peacefully on January 8, 2021 at Minoru Residence, Richmond, BC after a short battle with Covid 19.

Predeceased by her parents Bill and Mary Wilson and her brother Billy in Scotland. Survived by her brother Stuart and sister-in-law Anna in Irvine, Scotland, niece Carrie Cousar and family in Adelaide, Australia, niece Amanda Campbell and family in Scotland, nephew John Stuart Wilson and family in London, England. Also survived by long time friend and companion Davina Watson in Richmond. She was a special adopted aunt and great-aunt to the Anderson clan in Richmond and beyond.

Jean immigrated to Canada in 1961, living first in Edmonton, and then relocating to Vancouver. She was a long time employee for CBC in Vancouver before retiring.

Jean had a love of music, singing, Scottish Country Dancing and going on cruises. She had a strong Christian faith attending Central Presbyterian Church in Vancouver, and then Richmond Presbyterian Church. She could be heard singing with the choir and duets with Davina.

Jean will be missed for her sunny, smiling face for everyone she met. Internment at a later date.
