Build back better, with compassion and science signed society.

“Build back better” is a slogan being bandied about these days.

It encourages us to not just rebuild but rethink what we build and how we build in the aftermath of this global pandemic.

If we look at our infrastructure, everything from funding for long-term care to altering traffic lights, through a COVID lens, perhaps we can prevent some of the devastation when the next one hits.

And, yes, I hate to say it, but scientists are warning us that this won’t be the last.

In fact, some predict that global warming could unleash viruses and bacteria that we’ve never seen before because they’ve been trapped in the permafrost. Then again, let’s just get through this horror story before we start imagining others.

The point is, while this pandemic is not what anyone wanted, we could come out of it a stronger, more resilient, more compassionate and more intelligently de-

At the risk of sounding like one of those characters hanging from a cross singing Always Look on the Bright Side of Life in the movie Life of Brian (for you Monty Python fans), perhaps there is some good to be had.

It’s been said that when written in Chinese, the word crisis is composed of two characters. One represents danger, the other, opportunity. This isn’t actually true, but as my father says, “never let the truth spoil a good story.”

The misunderstanding persists because it’s a powerful and hopeful message. It tells us that while we’re scared now, we could come out the other side better for it.

The operative word is “could.”

COVID has put us in danger and in that danger is opportunity. The question is, will we take it or will we revert back to the familiar?

I’m confident we will make some changes for the better. In my parents’ seniors residence, for example, they have changed all the buttons you push

to open doors to ones you just wave your hand in front of. It’s a simple yet brilliant idea, and in a place where the flu can be deadly, this could save lives — even once COVID is a thing of the past.

Another COVID-inspired change I would love to see stay for good is the doing away with the “beg button.”

Along the Railway Greenway, where there are a lot of pedestrians and cyclists, the city’s traffic gurus decided they didn’t want people touching the walk button so now when the light is green the walk signal automatically goes on.

Again, brilliant. We should have that everywhere all the time. The fact pedestrians have to “beg” to be allowed to cross, even though the light is green, reflects our intensely car-centric city planning.

These may seem like small things and they are, in themselves. But nothing stands alone in this world.

How we design door openers and traffic lights says something about who we are and what we value — as does how

we fund long-term care, treat racialized communities, and support people with addictions or those living in poverty.

COVID has been a great revealer, showing us, sometimes with heartbreaking clarity, the gaps in our social and economic systems.

If we truly want to build back better, we have to do it through the lens of climate change and social and economic justice.

These realities have to be baked into every decision we make going forward — be it health policies, long-term care or traffic lights.

I don’t know if a mandatory mask policy is the way to go or not right now, but I take comfort in hearing Dr. Bonnie Henry explain why she’s saying no. One, the data doesn’t support its effectiveness; two, it would target disadvantaged communities.

In other words, her decision is informed by science and an awareness of social inequities. If we’re going to build back better, those have to make up the foundation on which we start construction.

it’s about the money HK freedom under threat Dear Editor,

Re: “Filter bubbles may be why I don’t get it,” Opinion, Nov. 5 I can easily relate to Eve Edmonds’ comments about having Trump-supporting family members and finding their ways of reasoning entirely unfathomable.

Half my family are Americans and many of them are also “Trumpites” as I call them, and, as is the case with some members of her family, it is also impossible to have an open-minded and objective conversation about social, economic, religious or political issues with some members of my family because they are totally closeted inside their intractable certitude that what they believe is the only legitimate and justifiable point of view to hold.

But unlike Eve Edmonds, I am not confused about why my family Trumpites hold fast to the opinions and beliefs and support Donald Trump’s agendas as they do.

It is about money — making as much money as possible and protecting it from those who would take it away from them.

respect and trustworthiness are irrelevancies in the face of the need to accumulate wealth, and that is why Trumpites so readily ignore Trump’s multitude of failings and sins and point to how well the economy and their investment portfolios are doing rather than getting involved in worrying about distracting issues such as racism, poverty, social injustice, political corruption or environmental degradation.

I am more concerned about how our addiction to and reliance on social media have diminished our concerns for meaning in language to the point far too many people are now inclined to declare “truth” is what they want it to be or say it is, rather than what it is proven to be.

That’s Trumpism in a nutshell, and a new form of totalitarianism that strives to strip the free press and all news media of their power to keep us well-informed, well-educated and capable of separating the liars from the truth-tellers.

But, as one of my relatives would likely say: “But my stocks are doing so well!”

Dear Editor,

As a Canadian immigrant from Hong Kong and an elected Richmond city councillor, I am apprehensive about some of the recent events in Hong Kong.

These events provide further confirmation the National Security Law imposed by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) government is attacking Hong Kong’s parliamentary system and press freedom.

Recently, the police arrested five members of the Hong Kong Legislative Council for disruptive behaviour that occurred six months ago. Why are they under arrest now? Why was this matter not handled according to parliamentary rules and procedures but instead, resolved by police arrests?

Why only members in opposition arrested while pro-PRC members who also used violence in that incident were not?

Many historical examples have shown when a regime arrests opposition members, democracy and freedom is extinguished.

Under such threats, the safety and wellbeing of the 300,000 Canadians in Hong Kong are at stake.

Canadians facing political persecution abroad must be extended every opportunity to return back to Canada.

Firearm regulations are remembering a ‘hero’ outdated in Richmond Dear Editor,

Dear Editor, Re: “Snow geese shooting sparks police presence,” Richmond-News.com, Nov. 11.

Your story about a massive police raid on an ALR home adjacent to Steveston Highway highlights several issues that must be addressed by Richmond City Council.

As a neighbour, I was able to observe the assemblage of heavily armed officers and six police vehicles for several hours to address a reported shooting for geese — all quite legal if permits are in place.

The police will determine any malfeasance in this case , but the point is the misuse of police resources and the confusion around what is legal and not legal regarding the discharge of firearms in Richmond.

Richmond regulations regarding hunting on ALR land?

If you look it up, they are covered

by Bylaw 4183, which has not been updated since 1983. Do those regulations make sense in 2020?

The hunting area in question borders No. 5 Road, Steveston Highway, Gilbert Road and the southern dike — an arbitrary zone deemed reasonable in the early eighties before our city was totally transformed.

What reasonable Richmond resident thinks long guns can be legally discharged a hundred metres from Steveston Highway — whether for hunting or whatever? Clearly the local regulations need to be updated , conforming with current sensibilities , the increased residential footprint on the ALR, and understood by Richmond residents.

I was very saddened to hear about World War II veteran George Chow’s passing away on Nov. 6, at the age of 99.

Mr. Chow was a true hero, a beacon of our common fight for peace, security and democracy.

During World War II, his contribution to the liberation of my country, France, and Europe in 1944 was tremendous.

France recognized his sacrifices by bestowing upon him the Légion d’Honneur, our highest distinction.

Since 2017, we were grateful to count on his presence at several events strengthening this very special bond between France and Canada and allowing to preserve the memory of all of those who fought to make possible a world free of tyranny and oppression.

Snow geese shots attract police to mansion said the RCMP.

A man shooting at snow geese from a Richmond mega mansion sparked the arrival of heavily armed police at the residence on Nov. 11.

At least six RCMP SUVs were on the scene of the massive home on No. 4 Road just south of Steveston Highway at around noon that day.

Several officers were spotted carrying automatic rifles and a group of around 10 people were standing outside the gates of the property talking to police.

Richmond RCMP told the Richmond News that it received a report of a male allegedly discharging a firearm from a residence into a field.

According to the complainant, the male appeared to be shooting at birds.

“Front-line officers attended and located the residence and associated male,”

“Fortunately, no one was injured as a result of this incident. Charges are pending,” added the RCMP. “Anyone considering hunting in Richmond are reminded to review all federal, provincial and municipal by-laws, which pertain to hunting within the City of Richmond.”

As a reporter on the scene tried to take pictures, the group started shouting at him to stop.

At that time, police appeared to allow the group back into the property, which had at least eight non-police vehicles inside the gates.

Fu Li Yu and Jing Yang of Belcarra applied to build a large home at 8551 No. 5 Rd. in “early 2017,” according to their claim.

On Aug. 30, 2017, they were issued permits on their five-acre property, and by that September, they claim, construction had started and never ceased.

But in October 2018, city inspectors deemed otherwise and cited Bylaw No. 7300, which states permits will be discontinued if construction is suspended for more than 180 days.

record high cOVid cases reported Richmond has reported a recordhigh number of COVID-19 cases, as exposures continue to pop up in schools and a long-term care home.

The BC Centre for Disease Control reported 48 new cases in Richmond last week (the centre reports cases by health service region on Thursday afternoons — check Richmond-News.com for updates).

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 482 cases have been detected in the city.

Across the province, daily case counts remain in the triple digits, often hitting record highs. On Tuesday, 717 cases were reported — a new single-day high — and 1,959 were confirmed over the weekend — the highest ever reported over a three-day period.

On Tuesday, the province also reported that 11 people had died from COVID-19 over the previous 24 hours. Nine people died from the virus over the weekend.

New testing site opens The Richmond Assessment Centre relocated to near the airport on Nov. 14, and is intended to serve Richmond and South Vancouver residents.

The new drive-through only testing site is located at 5911 North Service Rd. in the jetSet parking lot, and will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, walk-up clients will have to visit the COVID-19 testing collection centre at Richmond Hospital.

School exposures Nine Richmond schools have reported COVID-19 exposures over the past week (Nov. 12 to 17).

The latest exposures are at Steveston-London secondary, Cambie secondary, James Thompson elementary, Hamilton elementary, Richmond Secondary, Hugh McRoberts secondary, William Cook elementary, Talmey elementary and Kingswood elementary.

In all school exposure cases, Vancouver Coastal Health contacts anyone identified as a close contact. care home ‘outbreak’ A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Fraserview Intermediate Care Lodge.

According to Vancouver Coastal Health, restrictions to contain the spread of the virus were put in place at the care home on Nov. 11.

Meanwhile, outbreaks at two other long-term care facilities in the city have been declared over and restrictions lifted — at Pinegrove Place and Hamilton Village Care Centre.

The outbreak at Pinegrove Place was on the first floor of the facility, and according to Vancouver Coastal Health only one staff member at Hamilton contracted the virus.

The retired editor-in-chief of Sing Tao Daily is urging the federal government to pass laws to stop the spread of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) propaganda within Richmond and across Canada’s local Chinese communities.

his concern regarding how certain local Chineselanguage media are being used to promote Chinese government propaganda.

Ho referred to China’s Consul General Tong Xiaoling’s 30-minute speech on Vancouver radio station CHMB-AM1320 on July 23, in which Tong asked Chinese-Canadians to support the National Security Law (NSL) being imposed on Hong Kong and said there are “people in Canada trying to slander the NSL, attempting to cause trouble overseas.”

However, the radio station said it is committed to ensuring all their reports are provided in a fair, balanced and accurate manner.

The national security law would allow lawmakers to imprison and expel supporters of the independence of Hong Kong and its more autonomous governance.

“This national security law is totally contrary to Canadian core values,” said Ho.

“Ms. Tong treats ChineseCanadians as Chinese nationals. She exploits the free air wave of our broadcasters to convey political propaganda message(s) from the Chinese government,” said Ho, noting Tong should have at least made it a clearly demarcated paid advertisement.

“I would like the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications (CRTC) to investigate such cases for the sake of protecting the public interest in Canada.

Also, we need to safeguard the Chinese community from infiltration by political directives from a foreign government.”

Ho put forward several recommendations, including reforming the CRTC to be more responsive to the infiltration of foreign governments and their agents.

“The ultimate goal of the

And they invited her to join their show as part of their balanced coverage of the tensions between the PRC and Hong Kong.

“As everyone is well aware, news relating to the PRC and Hong Kong became a hot topic...CHMB AM1320 has interviewed many individuals, who are anti-PRC policies including anti-NSL..”

CHMB AM1320 said they made many requests for the interview, and they were excited to finally get this exclusive opportunity and “believe it was important to share the interview in its entirety with our hundreds of thousands of listeners.”

Meanwhile, last Wednesday, four opposition members of Hong Kong’s legislature were fired and accused of endangering national security for refusing to accept the NSL. The firings prompted the rest of the pro-democracy lawmakers in Hong Kong to resign en masse.

Ho said the departure of these lawmakers would reshape Hong Kong’s political landscape, turning it into another typical city in China.

Drunk driver hits undercover cruiser A Richmond driver won’t be able to get behind the wheel for the next three months after reversing into an unmarked police car and driving away — all while over the alcohol limit.

The Richmond RCMP Strike Force was working undercover when the driver of a black sedan backed into one of their vehicles before driving away, according to Const. Kenneth Lau, spokesperson for the Richmond RCMP. After the same police unit followed and stopped the

vehicle, multiple breath tests showed the man was driving under the influence of alcohol.

He was issued a 90-day roadside prohibition, a violation ticket for leaving the scene of an accident and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days.

Police say those who plan to drink should find an alternative way home, such as a taxi or designated driver.

Lira Lee was in a very dark place in her life, before Pathways and a Steveston pharmacy changed it all in a single day

She suffered postpartum depression after the birth of her second son, her marriage had long since broken down and her career as a psychiatric nurse had fallen apart.

Suffice to say, Lira Lee was in a dark place, both mentally and physically, given she was cooped up alone in a “dungeonlike” basement suite in Richmond.

For longer than she can remember, the mother-of-two young sons had been sleeping 14 hours a day and barely had the energy or motivation to get out of bed.

In fact, the canvas of Lee’s mid-life had been taking shape with the aforementioned picture for the best part of eight years.

“I was struggling. In 2007, I was diagnosed with depression while still being a psychiatric nurse in geriatrics, with Vancouver Coastal Health,” said Lee, who had been a nurse of 10 years to that point.

“I was trying to do a gradual return to work, but I couldn’t handle the stress. I was really depressed. I was living in a tiny, dark, basement suite.”

Lee, now 47, who had by this time lost custody of her two sons to her ex-husband and lost her father, said her basement was so dark, she couldn’t even read.

Just when she thought her life couldn’t get worse, however, a simple referral by her doctor turned her life around in a day.

“I was referred to Pathways Clubhouse about four years ago by my doctor,” said Lee, referring to the Richmond-based non-

profit, which supports people living with mental illnesses.

“I was worried, though, because I was a nurse and I was worried about the stigma. Being a psychiatric nurse before, I know people get judged and I was scared of that.

I was a nurse...I was worried about the stigma...I know that people get judged.

“I was nervous at first, but people are so friendly (at Pathways) and appreciative. When I met people there, they would listen to me. I came on leaps and bounds.

“That first day, when I left, I wanted to go straight back. It turned my life around.”

And it was that very support that Lee attributes for her truly feeling part of the world again, with her working as a LIRA LEE pharmacy assistant at Steveston Medicine Shoppe for the last two years.

“They referred me to the pharmacy about six months (after that first day). I started at four hours a week,” said Lee, who hadn’t been able to work for eight years.

“The boss was very confident in me and there was no pressure.

“I was nervous, because I hadn’t worked for so long and hadn’t worked in a pharmacy before. I now work four days a week.

“And we actually do need them, as we intentionally keep the staffing levels at our clubhouse low, so the members can help us and be engaged.

“That’s very important. Their participation is voluntary, but we do really need them.”

MacDonald said he recognizes the pivotal role Pathways’ Transitional Employment Program plays in getting its members on the road to recovery.

Before COVID hit, the non-profit had around 20 employers involved in the program, but now it has just eight, with another 31 members working independently, with the help of Pathways.

Of Lee’s position at Steveston Medicine Shoppe, MacDonald said, prior to the pharmacy joining the program, it had a heavy administritive back up, so they decided to give the program a try.

“We matched Lira with them due to her medical background and they quickly expanded her role,” explained MacDonald.

“They actually came last year to (the clubhouse) to give us all flu shots and it was Lira who gave me my shot.”

He acknowledged that Lee’s recovery had gone full circle, having arrived at Pathway’s at the lowest point of her life, to giving a flu shot to MacDonald.

“You have to give her so much credit.

She’s the one who took advantage of the opportunities,” MacDonald noted.

Few of us can say that we haven’t been affected mentally by the events close to home and around the world over the last eight months.

“He came out on the bike and kept me company on the road,” added Dunfee.

“It was easy to lose sight of what the bigger goal was. Asking for help really helped bring that clarity back and see the bigger picture again.”

The same can be said for Olympic athletes, who are in no way immune to the detrimental effects on mental health from the pandemic.

It was around the end of April and beginning of May that Richmond Olympian race walker Evan Dunfee started to realize he was psychologically off balance.

Although very much a solitary sport while a race is in full flight, race walkers have great camaraderie before and after, and oftentimes get together on the other side of the world to train.

“I was kind of putting on a brave face and trying to do everything myself,” Dunfee told the Richmond News.

“But at a certain point, I realized I wasn’t

“It was so nice to gain perspective of how it was affecting people around the world.

They were experiencing difficulties at varying degrees. It’s so easy to get caught in your own little bubble.

Dunfee said it’s not just setting goals that’s important in maintaining his mental wellness, it’s recognizing the little successes along the way.

“I race 50K, which in itself is such a long way; there’s all the mental stuff of getting through a race of that distance,” he said, adding that he’s utilized the services of a sports psychiatrist this season.

“The thing is, though, we don’t do them very often. I have one goal a year to get ready for. So how do I stay motivated for the other 364 days?

“It has been really challenged this year, obviously. What I’ve learned to do in the

last couple of years, is say ‘here’s my goal, here is where I’m at now and anything that gets me closer to that goal is a success and it’s worth celebrating. Whether or not I get to that goal….

“And my goals are quite big; I want to win Olympic gold and set world records. I know full well that there’s a better chance that won’t happen than it will.

“So I have to measure my success in knowing that I gave myself every chance to get there.”

Dunfee said his new techniques for goalsetting and mental wellness come from his earlier years as a top Canadian athlete, where winning and losing was his only yard stick.

“In 2012, when I missed the Olympic team, my world kind of came crashing down,” admitted Dunfee.

“I started working with a sports psych and reflecting on strategies that work and don’t work and being really honest with myself.

“I was such a sore loser before, everything was measured in win or lose.”

It was a cold Saturday night in February when a group of 14 Richmond youth came together to plan what a new youth mentalhealth hub should look and feel like.

Their priorities were to make it a comfortable space for young people and add some natural, organic elements — hence the wood accents inside Foundry Richmond, which had its soft opening in July in city centre.

“Youth in Richmond have been super involved — and super advocates,” said Tania Wicken, operations lead at Foundry Richmond.

The youth mental health hub, for those aged 12 to 24, received funding already more than two years ago from the Ministry of

Mental Health and Addictions, but they have struggled to find a suitable space. So, they have set up a interim site on Granville Avenue, just close to No. 3 Road, co-located with youth sexual health services.

The current facility is only 1,800 square feet with a lobby, counselling rooms and a multi-purpose room. But Wicken said they are actively looking for a permanent location with 8,000 square feet.

Youth are at a different brain development phase than children or adults, and this is why they need specialized, targeted services, explained Foundry Richmond walk-in counsellor Sean Ford.

Foundry Richmond offers them counselling, support and referrals to other programs.

In addition, parents can get help to support their youth.

Anxiety is one of the top challenges youth are dealing with,

explained Ford, and this has only been exacerbated by the pandemic and the subsequent isolation.

Youth can come to Foundry Richmond on their own initiative, but if parents notice red flags, like significant changes in behaviour,

lack of enjoyment or interaction with peers, they can reach out for support on how to help their kids.

In addition to counsellors, there are also trained peer support workers with “lived experience” who can help parents navigate the system.

Foundry is meant to be a walkin service, but opening during a pandemic meant adapting to safety protocols — they encourage young people to call ahead to book an appointment, but they try to fit them in either the same day or within a couple days, Ford explained.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Foundry is trying to offer as close to a walk-in service as possible, explained Wicken.

Foundry’s goal is to have strong partnerships with other services so there would be a “seamless” process to get youth connected to them, Wicken explained.

Overcoming isolation

Following are some of Jendral’s suggestions to help people feel a little more normal in abnormal times.

1: Go for a stroll If your daily fitness comes from going on a walk during your lunch break at work, see how you can continue that routine from home. If your motivation came from walking with others, see if those colleagues or friends are your support team. For example, you can hold each other accountable by sending a picture of where you walked or something you enjoyed on your walk.

2: A virtual meal with friends Food is a communal experience and not having large in-person gatherings has impacted many of us, explained Rani Wangsawidjaya, a public health dietitian with Vancouver Coastal Health. Wangsawidjaya said she did a social baking night with friends, where they all caught up while trying out the same recipe.

3: Join a book club If you enjoy reading and want to connect with others, Richmond Public Library has a

book club where you can call or video chat with a small group of other readers for an hour about a book selected by a librarian.

4: drive-in movies There is a drive-in movie theatre in Langley.

You can pull up your car and tune your radio to the movie playing in the theatre. There’s also the option to do a movie night with friends and family via Zoom, Skype, Netflix party or other digital options.

Bilingual support Richmond’s Community Mental Wellness Association of Canada (CMWAC) is hosting a weekly mental wellness support program for community members every Wednesday.

The Heart to Heart program, also called “a psychological first aid station,” aims to provide a safe space for people who have questions and concerns regarding mental health.

5: Volunteering Volunteering can be a great way to help people connect with others and feel a sense of purpose. Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives is looking for volunteers to help several different organizations.

Ahlay Chin, founder of CMWAC, said the program hopes to reduce social stigma around mental illness and give “culturally and language appropriate” counselling and support.

6: Knowing you aren’t alone in loneliness

The program, said Chin, will feature a team of professionals, including counsellors, psychologists, doctors and psychiatrists, to offer advice and answer questions.

The nightly 7 p.m. cheer throughout the city was an uplifting and uniting experience. We can still share this sense of togetherness in our loneliness by going out for a walk and seeing other people pass us. Share a friendly nod or a wave. Or simply enjoy being in the space of others by sitting on a park bench.

By her own making, Thorson has been isolated for the sake of her health.

“I’m pretty segregated, I don’t go out shopping. I usually play wheelchair rugby for the provincial team at the Oval once or twice a week.

When the pandemic initially kicked off in March, Thorson was coping well.

“That worked out really well,” Thorson, a tetraplegic (or quadriplegic), who uses a wheelchair.

Thorson said the loss of those human interactions has “definitely taken its toll,” adding that “online is not the same.”

“I’ve gained weight, even with doing fitness classes online. Before COVID, I played rugby because we crash into each other, it’s a great stress reliever. I don’t

As monotonous as the daily grind is just now, it’s nothing compared to earlier in the year, when Thorson pinched a nerve in her neck and was bedridden for two months.

“I’ve watched a lot of Netflix and we were doing family meals in bed,” she said.

“I just tried to stay connected. I had really supportive colleagues, family and friends, as well.”

As the days get darker and trees shed their leaves, health experts expect a higher than normal number of people will experience seasonal depression this year given pandemic restrictions are limiting connections with friends and family.

“With the pandemic and everything that has happened this year, there will be an increase in people experiencing seasonal affective disorder,” said Man Bath, CEO and clinical director of Richmond-based MindRight Counselling and Consulting. “We have not been able to go outside as much as in the summer to help us cope and reenergize.”

Seasonal affective disorder, also known as SAD, is a type of depression that comes and goes with the seasons, typically starting in late fall and early winter when there is less

SAD, however, is more than just the “winter blues,” according to Shawna Medley, director of Mental Health Services at Trinity Western University.

Symptoms can be extremely distressing, overwhelming and can interfere with daily functioning, she added.

“People with SAD experience mood changes and symptoms similar to major depression such as feeling sad or hopeless, having low energy, losing interests in activities you once enjoyed, having difficulty concentrating, and it also often includes hypersomnia (excessive daytime sleepiness), overeating and social withdrawal — people feel like hibernating,” said Medley.

The exact cause of SAD remains unknown, but research has given some biological clues. People with SAD have trouble regulating serotonin, also called the “happy molecule,” which helps people feel good about

life.

SAD occurs more often in women and is more common in people with a personal or family history of depression, noted Bath. how to fight off the “winter blues?”

SAD can be effectively treated with light therapy, antidepressants, counselling or a combination of these, explained Medley. Although symptoms will generally improve on their own with the change of season, spring may feel like a long way away right now and symptoms can improve more quickly with treatment, she added.

“I would encourage everyone vulnerable to SAD to use the dark days of winter to try something new — snowshoeing, cooking differently, visiting parks you’ve never been to before or learning to play a musical instrument, for example,” said Medley.

“Sometimes novelty and a sense of accomplishment can help combat low mood.”

Strategies to alleviate SAd 1: light therapy: Take advantage of any available natural sunlight or get a light therapy lamp. Exposure to a light lamp with at least 10,000 lux of cool-winter fluorescent light for 20-60 minutes can help.

2: Journaling: Being able to get thoughts and feelings out from your mind and onto paper is a way to externalize thought distortions and negative emotions.

3: develop an activity board: Write a list of all possible activities you can do either by yourself or with loved ones. Focus on activities that unplug from screens to focus on yourself, such as a walk or reading.

4: mindful breathing: We often forget to pause and focus on the present moment. There are many forms of guided meditation and breathing techniques online to decrease stress in the body.

5: have a goal every day/week: We need to have something to accomplish each day or week to keep us motivated and engaged. It doesn’t matter if the goal is small; completing something can create a spark.

6: Find a therapist to talk to: If you feel you have no one to talk to or don’t want to burden your family or friends, connect with a therapist to share your feelings and thoughts in-person or through telehealth.

An SFU professor is addressing the negative impacts of COVID-19 on children’s mental well-being with her latest research project — an online social network for children called No Child Alone.

The network, launched by Alissa Antle, aims to support children’s social and emotional learning during the pandemic.

“There’s really nothing for eight- to 12-year-olds in terms of safe, private social media connections, or private networks, that give them support around socialemotional learning, or the fallouts of COVID-19,” said Antle.

“Once operational, children who join the No Child Alone online community would be moderated by an adult and also have some autonomy to interact with each other and connect directly to resources they might need.”

No Child Alone connects children during COVID. Antle is launching the app prototype with Curatio — a digital health company that develops peer-to-peer online support communities — as a pilot with a limited number of children, and will expand it as further funding becomes available.

The research is currently funded by a $105,000 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) COVID-19 Alliance grant.

Canadians not accessing online help: study Canadians aren’t making as much use as they might from the mental health help governments are offering, said new research from UBC and the CMHA released Nov. 10.

With many students losing summer jobs, the timing of the program was critical to preventing students from falling behind at the beginning of the academic year.

The hamper program was able to help some of Langara’s most vulnerable, including post-care students and single parents, and addressed the new reality that an increasing number of students need support right now. Ad for student hotel an ‘error’ Maria Rantanen

Richmond city council had given preliminary approval to a developer to build a private post-secondary school in the Capstan area with the caveat — no dormitories.

However, last week the developer building the campus was advertising a “student hotel” in the complex which would accommodate 900 students in 300 units, with a student activity area, fitness centre, student lounge and an IT networking space — much like a dormitory.

Since the Richmond News contacted the city to inquire, the ad was changed and now just reads “hotel” and references

to students have been taken out.

The plan for the development, which passed third reading three years ago, includes office space, two hotels, a restaurant, retail space and the school.

According to the city, the site is not zoned residential because it’s on a flight path, and, therefore, can’t be used for dormitories.

But the consultant from Wydanco Consulting, Danny Leung, who put in the application for the developer, said calling the hotel a “student hotel” was an error, and there will be no dormitories for students — they can’t stay there long-term.

TransLink has revealed the proposed concept for the planned Capstan Canada Line Station in north Richmond.

The station will have a longer platform to accommodate three-car trains in the future.

It will also include a public plaza, retail space, bike lockers, public art and bright lighting.

Capstan station drawings were revealed this week.

“The students can stay short-term — like a hotel,” he said.

The hotel rooms won’t have a kitchen, just a washroom and handwashing area, he added.

The rezoning application was passed by council at Monday’s committee meeting.

Four lots were earmarked for a park within the neighbourhood, but staff have suggested scrapping this and allowing townhouses to be built there instead.

Coun. Michael Wolfe argued at a recent committee meeting to keep the dedicated parkspace saying nearby greenspaces don’t replace having a park accessible to people living in the neighbourhood.

Planned space for parks inside this area, between Cooney and Garden City roads south of Westminster Highway, could be reduced and the yards made smaller, based on recommendations by Richmond city staff.

“We’re fortunate those properties were placed in 2009 as placeholder properties for parkspace,” Wolfe said.

The rationale provided by staff for this reduction in greenspace was the expanding parks around the neighbourhood — at Cook elementary and the Garden City Lands — which have come about after the original plan was developed.

City staff recommended reducing greenspace in the Spires Road area in city centre — earmarked for densification — but council didn’t go down that route, at least for now.

Because of the economy, Leung said the post-secondary part of the project isn’t feasible at the moment, but he estimated there would be shovels in the ground in late 2021 for the first part of the project.

RCMP set for annual Christmas toy drive Valerie Leung

Richmond RCMP will be hosting the sixth annual toy drive in support of the Richmond Christmas Fund on Nov. 21.

The toy drive is one of the fund’s major events to help under-privileged families celebrate the winter holidays.

And while the event may look a bit different this year, the goal is the same — collect enough toys to fill an entire RCMP squad car.

The toy drive will take place outdoors in the Lansdowne Centre parking lot, next to the Canada Line station, on Saturday, Nov. 21 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Community members can drop off their donations of new, unwrapped toys and cash without leaving their vehicles.

Toys will be taken from the trunks of cars

by Santa and sanitized by Platinum Proclaim Restoration before placing them in the RCMP vehicle.

This year, a McDonald’s coupon and Herbaland gift bags will be given to each donor instead of a free pancake breakfast.

Families will also be able to take a socially distanced photo with Santa, CBSA officers and a detective dog from their cars, which will be posted online the week following the event.

Richmond Gives (RCRG), which operates the Christmas Fund, said it was a “difficult decision” to not offer the pancake breakfast but public safety had to come first.

“This year, a drive-through model makes the most sense,” said Gavsie.

“It helps keep people apart, while still giving them a chance to participate in the event.”

Gavsie added that having the toy drive event happening is a victory in itself as they are heavily reliant on public donations this year.

“It’s also a testament to the dedication and generosity of the Richmond RCMP, whose members spend countless hours planning and organizing everything.”

Meanwhile, multiple toy drive fundraisers, including the fire hall drive-through and the Steveston Classic Car Cruise, have been cancelled for the safety of the public, according to Gavsie.

However, he did tell the Richmond News that Richmond’s Canadian Tire businesses have donated a total of $10,000 worth of toys to help out this year.

Each year, the Christmas Fund distributes grocery vouchers to individuals and families in need. Children 11 and under also receive toys, books and sports equipment, while youth aged 12 to 17 are given gift cards.

Richmond resident being honoured by Blood Services A Richmond resident is being honoured by the Canadian Blood Services for contributions to volunteering for the non-profit.

Americo Silva was set to be recognized on Friday at the services’ annual Honouring Canada’s Lifeline event that will be celebrated virtually for the first time.

However, the event, said organizers on Monday, has been postponed.

Silva, an immigrant from Portugal in 1967 who started volunteering with Canadian Blood Services (CBS) in 2002, told the Richmond News how he “always had in mind to help the people of our country, Canada, as to make it a better place for us all.”

He said he stuck with CBS for so long because saving lives is a “never-ending journey and we, as citizens of this beautiful and welcoming country, have a responsibility to care for those in need around us.

Silva, a retired plaster and stucco contractor, told of how, when he immigrated to Vancouver from Portugal, he unexpectedly met someone from his home village — a woman who used to play with his younger sister.

She and Silva eventually married, raised three children and are now blessed with five grandchildren.

A Second World War veteran from Richmond has passed away, a day after his 99th birthday and just a few days before Remembrance Day. George Chow was front and centre in Normandy, France, in June of 2019 for the 75th anniversary of the famous D-Day landings.

In 2014, Chow was awarded the rank of Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour by the French government and was subsequently presented the Medal of Legion of Honour by Consul General JeanChristophe Fleury of the Consulate General of France.

Such was his reverence in Canadian military terms, National Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan posted on Twitter in Chow’s honour.

“We have lost a trailblazer who broke barriers and showed young children what

Philippe Sutter, Consul General of France in Vancouver, considered Chow a “true friend” and contacted the Richmond News on Remembrance Day to pay tribute.

“You may be gone, my friend, but you will never be forgotten.”

Chow, born in Victoria, in 1921, was a gunner in the 2nd Army Group Royal Artillery (AGRA).

“As many people in British Columbia and elsewhere, I was very saddened to hear about World War II Veteran George Chow’s passing,” wrote Sutter.

They were lucky when they came off the landing craft tank on the beaches of Normandy as the water was only nine inches deep.

After landing on D-Day they continued to move inland to Caen and other regions of France before heading into Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

Chow later volunteered to prepare for the “Pacific theatre” after the victory in Europe, but his new assignment ended soon after successive atomic bombs were dropped on Japan.

After the war, Chow joined the 43rd Heavy Anti-Aircraft of the Royal Canadian Artillery as a gunnery instructor and reached the rank of Master Warrant Officer, holding the position of Battery Ser-

One of the founding members of the Kajaks Track and Field Club, Anne Covell Cliff, has passed away.

Covell Cliff, an Olympic 400-metre runner, was one of the founding members of the Richmond Track and Field Club, later known as the Kajaks.

At the age of 18, she became the club’s first Olympian and set a Canadian record of 54.3 in the 400 metres at the 1968 Mexico Olympic Games.

The Delta Secondary School grad attended the University of British Columbia where she obtained her BPE and MEd degrees.

Covell Cliff married club teammate Brian Cliff and settled in Richmond where their family of two boys grew up.

She had a full career as a secondary school educator, counsellor, and coach in multiple sports before retiring from the Vancouver School District in 2007.

Both Covell Cliff and her husband became valuable members of the Achilles

Anne Covell Cliff was instrumental in advancing athletics in Richmond.

Frances (Franjka) Brkich

March 15, 1921 – November 3, 2020

Sadly we announce the death of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Frances (Franjka) Brkich (nee Krpan) of Richmond, B.C., at the Brookside Lodge Care Home in Surrey on November 3, 2020.

She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years (Victor) and two brothers, Ivan and Paul. She will be sadly missed by her children, Dan (Bev), John (Pat), Donna, Vicky (Neil); 4 grandchildren, Darren, Kerri (David), Leanne (Jason) and Glen; 4 great grandchildren, Wes, Carly, Casie and Grace.

Her 4 siblings: John Krpan, Nick Krpan (Sandra), Katie Witham, Helen Wright plus many nieces, nephews and cousins throughout Canada, the U.S., Germany, Croatia, and Australia.

Frances was born on March 15, 1921 in the village of Muntanja, near Lovinac, Lika, Yugoslavia (now Croatia). In 1933, Mom immigrated to Canada, with her brother, John and mother, Teresa. Following an exhausting journey by boat and train, they reunited with their father (Mike Krpan) in Mercoal, Alberta. She learned English, attended school to Grade 8 and soon became the big sister to three more siblings. She married Victor Brkich In 1939. They lived for a few years in Vancouver and Cumberland before settling in Richmond, B.C. in 1943.

Mom’s first home in Richmond was built on Patterson Road. The home could not be completed until 1945 due to the effects of war restrictions on lumber, flooring and stucco. One day Mom received a knock on the door and was told that her land was being expropriated to build the Oak St. Bridge to Vancouver. Victor Brkich built a new home at 1020 Caithcart Road and the family moved there in September 1955.

Mom was one of few immigrant women of her generation who worked outside of the home. Mom earned her own money by picking blueberries, gladiola bulbs, mushrooms, digging potatoes, pitching hay and working in the fish and fruit canneries in Richmond while raising four children.

From 1960 - 1975, she worked in the meat department at Woodward’s Department store (Oakridge). She loved her 10% employee’s discount and would fill her closet with purchases that she would gift to family and friends. Upon

retirement she became restless and decided to enter the workforce again as a cashier/cook at the Sky Chef restaurant at the old Richmond Airport (1976 - 1984). At the same time, she was providing 24/7 care to her aging parents who had moved into her home in 1979.

Mom was lovingly known as “Baba” to family and “Franny B” to her friends. She was the leading factor in uniting many of her Croatian cousins with their relatives in Canada and the U.S. It was through Mom’s memories that we were able to complete our family history.

Mom was a cat person. She enjoyed relaxing in her recliner with her favourite cat, “Machi” purring on her lap and “Jeopardy” or “Wheel of Fortune” on the T.V. There was always a cup of coffee with “skorup” (boiled cream) nearby along with a brain puzzle book and a sheet of bubble wrap to pop (to chase her worries away)!

Mom maintained a strong independent streak. She reluctantly had to receive help maintaining her large yard and cleaning her home but she cooked and baked well into her 98th year.

Mom regularly sent care packages to her family in Croatia.

She was able to return to her homeland for visits in 1965, 1976, 1984, 1998, and 2004. Those who travelled with her were witnesses to mom’s generosity as she enjoyed “treating” her family.

Mom was a proud “Lulu Island” pioneer but in June 2019 she required Nursing Home Care and had to leave Richmond where she had lived for 76 years. She entered Delta View and then was transferred to Brookside Lodge Care Home in Surrey.

Mom had a feature story written about her by Arlene Kroeker in her “Food for Thought” column in November 2010 (Richmond Review) after mom had won the Trail Appliances Contest for having the oldest, functioning stove in Richmond. Mom’s greatest joy was gathering her large family together, planning and cooking delicious feasts on that special 1955 Moffat stove. She was a gourmet cook and an excellent baker. Her cabbage rolls (sarma), ribs and apple strudel were legendary.

When COVID restrictions were put in place in all Care Homes in March, our Mom couldn’t leave the Care Home and we couldn’t go in. She began to decline emotionally and physically. She missed her family so much. Pneumonia further weakened her immune system and she lacked the strength to fully recover.

Mom was skilled at crocheting lace doilies and tablecloths and freely offered her beautiful handiwork to family and friends. Mom never had much time or interest in recreation but she did belong to a bowling league when she was in her late 40’s and did post a few outstanding scores. Her favourite outing as a senior was to go to the Richmond casino to play the 1 cent machines and then treat her family to lunch afterwards with her winnings.

Mom was proud of her yard and home. She planted a vegetable garden, blueberry bushes, several fruit trees and hundreds of flowers. But her crowning glory were her fig trees that yielded thousands of figs each season. Many a recipient was grateful when a phone call offered free figs and a cutting to grow their own tree. Mom generously shared her bounty with her neighbours too.

The family would like to thank the staff at Brookside Lodge Care Home for their diligence and compassion in meeting the needs of our Mom as best they could during a Pandemic. We appreciated the baking sessions where Mom got to make strudel and Alberta cookies for the last time. Mom really enjoyed conversing with staff. Most of all, mom’s spirits were lifted daily when “Spicy” the Care Home cat, came by her room for treats or a long nap on her bed.

Spicy was instrumental in comforting mom (and our family) in her last few months.

Mom was a special, unique woman who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Due to COVID, and Mom’s wishes, there will be no service. A celebration of life will be held at a future date. A private burial was held at Ocean View Cemetery.

Donations in Frances’s memory can be made to the Brookside Lodge Care Home, or a Cat Shelter or the Heart Foundation.

REYNOLDS, Alan April 15, 1930 - November 14, 2020 Rev. Dr. Alan Reynolds passed away at the age of 90 at Richmond Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Brenda; his daughter, Diana; sons, Peter, Patrick and James; daughters-in-law, Julie, Valerie, and Kelly; eight grandchildren, Courtney, Jillian, Cameron, Thomas, Elizabeth, Lucia, Livia, and Nina; nieces, Joyce, Joan, and Margaret Ann, and nephews, David, Bruce, Sandy, and Doug and their families.

The youngest of three sons, Alan was predeceased by his parents, Rev. A. J. and Phoebe Reynolds and his brothers, Alfred and Burton.

Born in Summerside, P.E.I., Alan had many happy memories of growing up in the Maritimes. After completing a Bachelor of Economics and a brief career in banking, Alan pivoted when he felt called to spiritual leadership, working tirelessly to obtain a Bachelor of Divinity, Master of Systematic Theology and a Doctor of Ministry from esteemed universities in Nova Scotia, New York City, and San Francisco. He was ordained a minister in the United Church of Canada and devotedly served churches in Fredericton and Sussex Corner, N.B., as well as a chaplaincy at Mount Allison University. While serving as a young minister on the East Coast, Alan met Brenda and they were married in 1962.

In 1970, the Reynolds family moved to Vancouver, B.C. where Alan was minister at Ryerson, Marpole, University Hill and St. Stephen’s (Delta) United Churches for a combined 25 years. While Alan loved to teach through his sermons, he was known for his warm delivery and engaging manner. Alan’s pastoral heart embraced all those he served from coast to coast, and he continued to reach out in love and prayer to so many people throughout his entire life.

Alan was a true “churchman.” He loved the church, certainly all those in it, but also the organization itself. He contributed to the national and local life of the United Church, and faithfully reminded it of its theological and evangelical roots, perhaps most eloquently in his books, Reading the Bible for the Love of God and A Troubled Faith. A younger generation of ministers remember the kind, generous, non-judgmental support he provided.

Alan was an enthusiastic outdoorsman who loved to garden, walk, fish, camp, and cross-country ski. Music played an important role in Alan’s life, singing as well as playing the trombone, particularly with River City Gospel Jazz and the Christmas Eve family brass ensemble. Immensely proud of his family, Alan enjoyed the huge gatherings of 17 for Sunday dinners and birthday celebrations, as well as many special vacations, from Whistler weekends to Disney Cruises.

There was little that brought him more joy than hearing his family laugh together.

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease 10 years ago, the past decade introduced challenges that Alan approached with strength, dignity, and a positive outlook.

Brenda would like to sincerely thank Dr. Cheryl Hau for her special care for Alan through this struggle.

After retirement in 1995, Alan created the Reynolds Rap, a weekly email series.

His sign off was this: “Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

Leave the rest to God.” These words continue to inspire many.

Alan truly exemplified the following: that character matters, what you believe matters, what you say matters and, most of all, what you do matters.

This IVMP has been prepared to replace the existing 5-year IVMP which expires in February 2021. The proposed duration of the IVMP is from March 31, 2021 to March 31, 2026.

The vegetation management and weed control methods proposed for use include hand pulling, mowing, trimming, pruning, selective slashing, girdling, geotextile fabric, retaining existing low or self-sustaining ground cover, seeding, fertilization where setbacks permit and tree/shrub plantings. The use of pesticides is intended within the area to which the IVMP applies. TMC conducts all work, including pest management, in strict adherence with all applicable Acts and regulations.

The active ingredient names and an example of trade names of the pesticides (herbicides) proposed for use under this plan include: aminocyclopyrachlor (Navius VM), aminopyralid (Milestone), chlorsulfuron (Telar), clopyralid (Lontrel 360), dicamba (Vanquish), diflufenzopyr (Overdrive), diuron (Diurex 80 WDG), flumioxazin (Payload), fluroxypyr (Retain B), glyphosate (Vantage XRT), indaziflam (Esplanade SC), MCPA (MCPA Amine 500), mecoprop-P (Mecoprop-P), metsulfuron methyl (Clearview), picloram (Grazon), pyroxasulfone (Torpedo), triclopyr (Garlon XRT), 2,4-D (2,4-D Amine 600), Esterified vegetable oil (Hasten adjuvant) and paraffinic oil and alkoxylated alcohol non-ionic surfactants (Gateway adjuvant). Application methods include: backpack, power hose and nozzle, stem injection, wick/wipe-on applicator, and boom sprayer.

The IVMP manages problem vegetation, including control of noxious weeds and invasive plants within TMC’s rights-of-way and access roads to its pipeline systems. In British Columbia, TMC operates the Trans Mountain Pipeline transporting crude oil and refined products from Edmonton, AB to Burnaby, BC. The pipelines are located below ground and in the proximity to the following communities in British Columbia: Valemount, Albreda, Blue River, Avola, Vavenby, Clearwater, Darfield, McLure, Heffley Creek, Kamloops, Merritt, Kingsvale, Hope, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Sumas, Langley, Surrey, Coquitlam and Burnaby.

This IVMP has been prepared to replace the existing 5-year IVMP which expires in April 2021. The proposed duration of the IVMP is from May 1, 2021 to May 1, 2026.

The vegetation management and weed control methods proposed for use include hand pulling, mowing, trimming, pruning, selective slashing, girdling, geotextile fabric, retaining existing low or self-sustaining ground cover, seeding, fertilization where setbacks permit and tree/shrub plantings. The use of pesticides (herbicides) are intended within the geographic area to which the PMP (IVMP) applies. TMC conducts all work, including pest (herbicide) management, in strict adherence with all applicable Acts and regulations.

The active ingredient names and an example of trade names of the pesticides (herbicides) proposed for use under this plan include: aminocyclopyrachlor (Navius VM), aminopyralid (Milestone), chlorsulfuron (Telar), clopyralid (Lontrel 360), dicamba (Vanquish), diflufenzopyr (Overdrive), diuron (Diurex 80 WDG), flumioxazin (Payload), fluroxypyr (Retain B), glyphosate (Vantage XRT), indaziflam (Esplanade SC), MCPA (MCPA Amine 500), mecoprop-P (Mecoprop-P), metsulfuron methyl (Clearview), picloram (Grazon), pyroxasulfone (Torpedo), triclopyr (Garlon XRT), 2,4-D (2,4-D Amine 600), esterified vegetable oil (Hasten adjuvant) and paraffinic oil and alkoxylated alcohol non-ionic surfactants (Gateway adjuvant).

Application methods include: backpack, power hose and nozzle, stem injection, wick/wipe-on applicator, and boom sprayer.

KIM’S STORY In the summer of 2018, Kimberly Touen started to feel chest pains. As a lifelong athlete and health nut, she was convinced she had exerted herself too much and began to pull back from her exercises to give herself rest. But when the problems persisted, she went to her local hospital in Alberta to receive answers. They told her she must have had asthma and asked her to go home with a puffer.

Kim wasn’t convinced. The problems were onset too fast, and as a nurse herself familiar with health care, she wanted a second opinion, and she wanted the best. So she returned home to Vancouver where she was brought into the care of the doctors at VGH. It was here she was given her true diagnosis - Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma. A rare disease that usually found in the salivary gland or brain, but in her case it displayed in her lungs. The disease had caused a cancerous tumour to form and without an operation, she wouldn’t

make it. As a young mother, the idea of not being there for her child was devastating, but thankfully she had made the right decision and was given the very best care at VGH.

In steps Dr. John Yee, who in October 2018 extracted the cancerous tumour. The operation was a success, and three weeks later Kimberly was sent home, officially cancer free.

It has been more than a year since her surgery and Kim is grateful to be alive and well.

Inspired by her time spent with Dr. John Yee, she is planning a return to school to train and become a surgeon herself. In the meantime, she is working part-time as a nurse in Fraser Health (she was working with VCH until recently) in the stroke/brain injury units.
