Filter bubbles may be why I don’t get it Eve Edmonds

EEDMONDS@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Well that was disheartening. I know, I know...all the votes haven’t been counted, and, in fact, by the time you read this, Joe Biden may indeed be America’s president-elect. Still, I’m not feeling great. Like many, I was hoping to see a clear and decisive repudiation of the Donald Trump presidency. The fact Tuesday night and all day Wednesday was a nail-biter is astonishing to me. At one point I had to yell at the TV, “Why are we even having this conversation? Why is this even up for debate?” (You know you’re feeling helpless when you’re yelling at the television.) Well, Trump’s fitness for office clearly is up for debate. In fact, his showing is stark proof that he still commands a significant chunk of the American electorate — and not just his hat-wearing, mask-less base. Granted, this was not our election, but borders are porous...and not just physically. The attitudes of our neighbours, who

also happen to be the most powerful nation in the world, can’t help but impact us.

rigourous exchange, the best ideas emerge and society will be rewarded.

In other words, we need to get some perspective on why we’re having this conversation and why this is even up for debate. I remember a councillor once saying, “Don’t get mad, get curious.”

John Mills picked up on this theme about 200 years later in his book On Liberty, where he says not only should bad ideas be exposed, since they’ll run underground anyway, but good ideas also need to be examined and re-examined otherwise they just turn into dogma.

So let’s try it, but before I go there... It so happens I’m giving a talk in a couple of weeks as part of Kwantlen University’s Third Age Learning at Kwantlen (TALK) program. It’s a free program for seniors that features lectures on everything from astronomy, to opera, to immigration policies. I’ve been asked to talk about freedom of the press. For it, I plan to provide some historical context and look at a couple of the early proponents — and I mean early. In 1644, the English philosopher, poet and intellect, John Milton, wrote Areopagitica, wherein he lays out the argument for why people should be allowed free expression. He talks about how all ideas, good and bad, should be aired so they can compete in the “free market of ideas.” Through that

What this has to do with the current American election is the fact all these centuries later, and in a society where people are free to post and tweet just about anything, we are more isolated and more siloed than ever, or at least more than I ever remember. I have Trump-supporting family members in the U.S. whose way of thinking I find completely unfathomable. Despite our familial connection, when it comes to politics, they are alien to me — alien to the point, any discussion about politics among some of us has become a complete no-go zone. So, were those earlier thinkers overly confident in our capacity to engage in reasoned debate as long as we were allowed free expression?

Free expression and the notion of a free marketplace of ideas is a worthy goal, but like all “free markets,” it begs the question, free for who? In the 1950s, a journalist wrote, “Freedom of the press is afforded to those who own one.” Today’s press barons are the Mark Zuckerbergs (Facebook) and Jack Dorseys (Twitter) of the world and their agenda (like press barons old and new) is to maximize profit. It appears, this is best done by sowing discord and creating filter bubbles. In other words, the very platforms that were heralded as the great equalizers giving everyone a voice are, too often, undermining any sense of a shared reality. And without that, how do we even start the conversation? I’m not saying social media is to blame for all the ills of the world, or even the American election, but it’s clear the freedom to tweet has nothing to do with the ideals of a free press.

Family springs party We will remember Dear Editor,

Our parents, John and Eileen Perez, have lived in Richmond for more than half a century. Last month, they had planned to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 10. This active and involved couple, with three grown children and an extended family of over 20, had made big plans to celebrate this remarkable day. As the reality of COVID-19 took hold, John and Eileen made the heart-breaking decision to cancel their carefully planned and eagerly anticipated celebration. For a couple who loves family more than anything, there was more sad news. Their son who lives in the United States, was not allowed to a visit due to Canada’s travel restrictions.

But there was a silver lining! On the beautiful fall day, John and Eileen were taken out for a “small celebratory lunch” by their two daughters. When they were out, their sons-in-law and grandchildren decorated their home and placed celebration posters along the walking route back to their Steveston condo. The entire village knew this was a special day. Thank you to the City of Richmond, who placed “no parking” signs out on the street — the way was cleared for the main event. As our parents laughed and cried with the surprise of the their home being transformed, they soon were treated to a several-blocks-long parade of cars. Led by the Richmond RCMP,

the many cars were filled with friends, family and well-wishers from all over the Lower Mainland. The cherry on top was the sirens from our Richmond Fire Department, which quickly turned heads. When it seemed that COVID-19 was going to take away a celebration of a remarkable milestone, the community and family rallied to deliver what will be remembered longer, and with more fondness, than any “normal” event. Now, more than ever, it shows that community and commitment, at whatever social distance, matters. Congratulations, John and Eileen, and thank you, Richmond.

Perez children, Debbie, Sylvia and Justin

RICHMOND

Dear Editor,

Remembrance Day is an important day. My grandfather served in the trenches of World War 1; my mother recalled the lists of names of boys she knew from school lost in the battles of World War 2. As I face the cenotaph, I remember the names of Canadian Armed Forces members with whom I served, now listed on the pages of The Book of Remembrance. This year Remembrance Day will be different for all of us. The service at Richmond City Hall is a closed service, the public will not have access but the service will be streamed. We are asking that you remember in place, from your home. The city’s website has the details that will allow you to watch the service from anywhere with internet access. In the interest of the safety of our members and the public, the canteen at the Richmond Legion,

Here’s What Our Resident Barbara Says About Us... “For over six years, this has been my beautiful home, Gilmore Gardens. Our General Manager, Mirandah, housekeeping staff, dining room staff, Chef Val and his assistants, the Life Enrichment team and our capable Building Supervisor are excellent. They listen and pull off miracles to make every day memorable for all my Gilmore neighbours.”

Branch 291, will be closed on Remembrance Day. As your situation allows, I would ask you to join me in a toast to the fallen from your home.

Poppies will be sold at numerous retailers around Richmond and please be generous: the money collected is used to support the needs of veterans. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you that the Richmond Legion is in the process of undergoing some changes but it is strong and will be here in Richmond for years to come helping veterans and supporting Richmond. The members of the Canadian Armed Forces stepped forward without hesitation now, let’s do our part and remember. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

Scott Stewart, CD

Break-in ‘disheartening,’ says outreach volunteer Kirsten Clarke KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Volunteers at St. Alban’s are salvaging what’s left after one of their sheds — storing food and donations for their outreach programs — was broken into Saturday night. The church stores donations, food and other supplies in its two sheds, located behind the hall next to the church, where St. Alban’s holds its community meals, Friday lunches and hamper pickups. “They tried to burn (the shed) down in three places,” said Kristin Woodhouse, a volunteer outreach worker with the church. “We give out socks and we give out towels, we give out all kinds of stuff to people who need it — and they went through it all, and threw it

all over the lawn behind the hall and burned a ton of stuff.”

Drug paraphernalia was also left scattered about the area. The supplies, essential as the weather changes, would have lasted the church up to six months. Now, just about two dozen socks and some toques are left. Tents, a donated bike and food were also stolen, she said — all items that the church saves for people in need. Kids’ toys were also damaged or strewn about. The culprits also tried to break into the second shed. Meanwhile, the floor, back wall and light will all need to be replaced in the shed that was broken into. “This was just deliberate. This was just malicious and totally unnecessary. That’s the thing — if you want

something, if you need something, we’re always there,” said Woodhouse.

“And a lot of the people who have relied on our services in the past come back to donate their time and give back what they received and that’s the best part...that’s why it hurts so much. It just seems so malicious.” The break-in was discovered by the church’s outreach volunteers Sunday morning, said Woodhouse, and reported to Richmond RCMP. The News has reached out to Richmond RCMP for more information. “It’s very discouraging, it’s disheartening, but it’s not going to stop us… We will rise to the occasion because this is our community and we care about each other,” said Woodhouse. “We don’t give up (and) we’ll keep going. That’s what we do.”

Anti-CCP demonstration at Garry Point Park Several cars were seen at Garry Point Park on Saturday bearing signs protesting the Chinese government. In photos submitted to the Richmond News, one sign reads “CCP = the most evil virus, a scourge to the world” and another, “stop persecuting Falun Gong.” The demonstration appears to be linked to that group. Founded in the early 1990s, Falun Gong is “an ancient Chinese spiritual discipline in the Buddhist tradition,” according to the website for the New York-based Falun Dafa Information Centre. But in the late 1990s, the Chinese government “launched a violent campaign against Falun Gong.” The practice is now headquartered in New York. —Kirsten Clarke/Richmond News

Tea lounge fined $2,300 Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A tea lounge in Richmond was given a $2,300 fine for serving alcohol after 10 p.m. This is the third violation ticket that has been issued in Richmond under the COVID-19 Related Measures Act (CRMA). The tea lounge on Alexandra Road was issued the fine for the incident on Oct. 24, according to Supt. Will Ng, officer in charge of the Richmond RCMP. RCMP became aware of the infraction while investigating a stabbing outside the tea lounge that night, Ng explained. Two other tickets have been given out in Richmond under the CRMA: a private sports facility was fined $2,300 in August for having more than 50 people in its premises, and a man was issued a $1,000 non-compliance ticket in September for not quarantining while ordered to do so.

COVID cases near 400

COVID-19 exposures have popped up in schools, a care home and a drug store over the past week — but the number of COVID-19 cases detected in Richmond is generally staying under 40 per week. Last week, the BC Centre for Disease Control reported 35 new cases in Richmond, with a total of 397 detected in the city since the beginning of the pandemic. The BCCDC reports cases by health service region on Thursday afternoons (check Richmond-News.com for updates). Drug store exposure A staff member at a Shoppers Drug Mart in Richmond recently tested positive for COVID-19. Loblaws Inc, which owns the chain, announced on its website that a member of its team

at the Shoppers at Blundell Centre on No. 2 and Blundell roads tested positive.

The company said the last day the employee worked was on Oct. 23. However, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) has not listed the store on its list of public exposure locations and Loblaws is only posting the positive employee cases for transparency. Care home ‘outbreak’ A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at the Hamilton Village Care Centre in east Richmond. Restrictions to contain the spread of the virus were imposed at the seniors care home on Thursday, Oct. 29. According to VCH, the outbreak is on the first floor. It was detected in one staff

person and there hasn’t been any evidence of transmission or residents being affected, explained a VCH spokesperson.

Hamilton Village Care Centre is a privately run facility with 135 beds and is operated by Trellis Seniors Services, which just opened in May in east Richmond. School COVID-19 cases Ten Richmond schools have had COVID-19 exposures since schools re-opened in September. But Board of Education chair Ken Hamaguchi pointed out this week that, as far as the school district is aware, there have been no transmissions of the virus within schools. The latest school exposure was at R.J. Tait elementary, which families learned of on

Tuesday.

Two other Richmond elementary schools — McNeely and Spul’u’kwuks — also reported COVID-19 exposures on Monday. Last week, VCH warned of an exposure at R.C. Palmer secondary, and parents of Walter Lee elementary students were informed of a COVID-19 exposure at that school. The week before that Cambie secondary was reported to have an exposure. In all school exposure cases, Vancouver Coastal Health contacts anyone identified as being a close contact. The Richmond Assessment Centre continues to test for COVID-19. It’s located at 6820 Gilbert Rd. — Richmond News staff

Police bust 6 drug labs

A total of six drug labs were taken down by two separate police operations on the same day. Search warrants were performed at three Richmond locations involving suspected synthetic drug production last Wednesday afternoon. Police said the warrants were part of an eight-month targeted investigation that is still ongoing. “These types of investigations pose a significant danger to our officers and to our community...,” said Sgt. Gene Hsieh of the Richmond Organized Crime Unit. “Some of the chemicals are highly unstable, and it will take some time for us to render these sites safe before continuing our investigation.”

While information on the exact locations of the suspected labs are not being released, witnesses said a SWAT-like vehicle and an ambulance were spotted at Maple Road, between Railway Avenue and No. 2 Road, around 2 p.m. on Oct. 28. A similar scene was also present at Comstock Road, near Granville Avenue and Gilbert Road. Richmond RCMP confirmed that the BC RCMP Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement and Response (CLEAR) team and the Richmond RCMP Organized Crime Unit were at the affected areas. Meanwhile, earlier the same day, three more Richmond properties were raided by Delta Police, as part of a cannabis investigation.

Delta Police, with the assistance of the Richmond RCMP, an emergency response team and a combined special forces unit, executed a number of search warrants at commercial properties near No. 6 Road and Westminster Highway, No. 9 Road and Westminster Highway and a third property at the 7400-block of Sidaway Road. The warrants were regarding possible crimes under the Cannabis Act, according to Cristianne Leykauf, spokesperson for the Delta Police. She added that a number of arrests were made, but no one has been charged at this time. —Valerie Leung/Richmond News

Pedestrian dies after early morning collision Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Richmond RCMP is appealing for witnesses or dashcam footage after a pedestrian died following a collision with a pickup truck in the early hours of Sunday. At around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, police were called to the 8500 block of Cambie Road, close to Sexsmith Road, where a pedestrian had been struck. The pedestrian, whose age or sex has not been released, was taken to hospital with serious injuries but later died. The driver, say the RCMP, has been cooperative with police. The RCMP have ruled out alcohol and speed as contributing factors in the collision. “Pedestrians are encouraged to use marked crosswalks when possible, and to make eye contact with the driver before crossing a road so they know to stop for you,” said Const. Kenneth Lau. Richmond RCMP is seeking witnesses or dashcam footage of the incident. If you have any information, contact the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 or Richmond_CCIT@ rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

and pay $25,000 compensation to the complainant on or before 14th nov. 2020. It is alleged that the VSA has dishonestly assisted an unlawfully operated car dealership whom is alleged to have carried out a fraudulent car sale that has resulted in great financial loss to the complainant (buyer). The buyer claims that even after having provided undeniable written proof and evidence of fraud, the VSA refuses to act, makes excuses, and hasn’t done anything worthwhile in an entire year to resolve the matter. The buyer has provided irrefutable evidence such as: being deliberately mis-sold a warranty which is invalid, fraudulent misrepresentation as to the vehicle’s condition resulting in $10,000 of unavoidable repairs, a bogus ‘cash-back’ scheme where the buyer didn’t receive any cash back, a total failure to provide any finance paperwork whatsoever, and a fraudulently increased purchase price to that advertised. The buyer alleges that whilst the VSA receives taxpayer funding, it doesn’t have any interest in performing its duty. Should a resolution not be reached by 14th Nov. 2020, a claim will be sued out in Vancouver Supreme Court against the VSA for Abuse of Function and/or Dishonest Assistance, without further notice.

However, each image was converted into a unique numeric code, according to the investigation report, which could be used to identify individuals based on their facial features. This biometric data is intrinsically, and usually permanently, linked to each individual. Furthermore, the images were stored in a centralized database by a third party, which CF said it was “unaware” existed — and which elevated the risk that the data could be used by unauthorized parties.

The cameras were at Richmond Centre — where they captured images of 475,300 shoppers — as well as at CF Pacific Centre in downtown Vancouver and 10 other malls in Canada.

The commissioners say they “remain concerned” that CF refused their request to ensure that express, meaningful consent — for example, an opt-in option — is obtained from shoppers, in the event the company chooses to use the technology again. “It has to be transparent and public and be upfront, when you put a hidden camera in the kiosk” said Kenny Chiu, MP for Steveston-Richmond East. “No customer requiring services at that directory, would expect that his or her images would be captured, let

In total, CF — a Toronto-based real estate company that owns and operates 23 malls across the country — collected five million shoppers’ images, and analyzed sensitive biometric data using “anonymous video analytics” (AVA), according to the privacy commissioners of Canada, B.C. and Alberta.

And while the company has removed the cameras, it hasn’t promised to not do it again, nor has it been fined.

So it’s just sneaky for the system to do that.” In a statement, the company said it accepted and implemented all the commissioners’ recommendations, “with the exception of those that speculate about hypothetical future uses of similar technology.” The company said the AVA software was a pilot — designed to anonymously analyze foot traffic at the malls, as well as the age and gender of shoppers — and was stopped in 2018 when privacy concerns were first raised by the public. CF also told the privacy commissioners that it was not collecting personal information, since the images taken by the cameras were “briefly analyzed,

By collecting personal information and failing to obtain meaningful consent, CF contravened privacy laws — something that was of particular concern given the sensitivity of biometric data, according to the report. Vito Pilieci, senior communications advisor with the federal privacy commissioner’s office, told the Richmond News the concern is CF could simply restart this practice — or a similar one — and the commissioner would then either have to go to court or launch a new investigation. The federal privacy commissioner, Daniel Therrien, has been calling for changes to Canada’s privacy laws. In a December 2019 report, Therrien said the law should “truly and firmly put an end to self-regulation” in the private sector, and should incorporate a rights-based framework, so that people aren’t “left alone” when interacting with businesses. The law should also define privacy in a broad sense, for example, as “freedom from unjustified surveillance.” Search 475,000 images for full story at Richmond-News.com

Mayor denies ‘friction’ Housing proposed Maria Rantanen

MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

That’s “news to me,” was Mayor Malcolm Brodie’s reaction to former Richmond police chief Ward Clapham’s comment to the Cullen Commission into money laundering that there was “friction” between the city and the RCMP about hiring officers in 2002 to monitor the casino. Brodie pointed out RCMP often asks for more officers, and council weighs how many more they can budget. Furthermore, the RCMP contract allows them to hire more officers if they deem it’s necessary and bill the city for that. Even with the amount budgeted for policing, the RCMP weren’t at their full complement through the early 2000s, Brodie added, mainly because of recruitment and retention issues.

In 2004, Clapham described the impact of opening of the River Rock Casino in an email as a monster that was growing, saying its influence would “soon control B.C. gaming.” By 2005, Clapham’s investigators had intelligence on kidnappings, extortion, assaults and loan sharking by patrons at the River Rock. Meanwhile, illegal casinos were sprouting up in the city, which was attracting organized criminals from outside the region, the commission heard last week. In 2007, two “illegal gaming constables” were approved for funding for the Richmond RCMP to monitor the casino, and later another 10 officers as well as a crime analyst were added.

it helped pay for the Oval, he added. “It did form a reasonable part of our corporate community, but of course we’ve seen the situation in the last four or five years has been a real challenge,” he said. Brodie noted two provincial RCMP teams meant to investigate money laundering were shut down by then-Solicitor General Rich Coleman — the Joint Illegal Gaming Enforcement Team and the Integrated Proceeds of Crime Team. “They were disbanded and I thought that was a terrible mistake,” Brodie said. “They were on the right track to be hyper vigilant about it and they dropped the ball.” — With files from Glacier Media Search Ward Clapham for full story at RichmondNews.com

Brodie said he originally voted against gaming expansion, but he now believes it has had positive benefits for the city. For example,

BC Housing and the City of Richmond are partnering to build new temporary supportive housing for people who are homeless. BC Housing has applied for a temporary use permit at 25202640 Smith St., near Bridgeport Canada Line Station, to build 40 new homes and is working with the city on a proposal for the projecy. Bridgeport Supportive Housing would be in place for about three years, until permanent housing is available, according to BC Housing. It would also allow those experiencing homelessness to practice physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Smith Street site is owned by the city, and Richmond council will consider the permit later this year. The building would be operated by a non-profit to provide 24/7 support. There would also be a nurse on-site regularly to provide health care and access to treatment. BC Housing said it anticipates construction to begin in spring 2021, and residents to move in before the end of that year. The provincial agency says neighbouring residents can ask questions online or by email to communityrelations@ bchousing.org, or attend a public hearing that is tentatively scheduled January 2021.

Christmas Fund ‘army’ ready to mobilize Valerie Leung

VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Steveston Post Office all lit up for Christmas. Photo submitted

“The Christmas Fund is the definition of food, toys and a memorable holiday season; but that doesn’t happen without the community.” That’s the message from Wayne Duzita, chair of the Richmond Christmas Fund, adding that the 12-member Richmond Christmas Fund committee “army base” and the public is what is ensuring a holiday season for low-income Richmond residents this year. Duzita specifically commended the aforementioned army, which consists of a group of 150 members, that supports the annual program. This group, said Duzita, was created after he attended a breakfast meeting in 2010. Duzita was inspired by the idea of getting many people to do a little, instead of a few people doing a lot, about 10 years ago after hearing a speaker introduce the concept. It’s what gave him the idea to start the Richmond Christmas Fund Army. “We all rely on a certain number of people in a community and there is always this core group of people that supports the Richmond Christmas Fund throughout the year with the many things that we do.” This is in addition to the diversity of the Richmond Christmas Fund committee, he added. This year’s committee is made up of 12 members from multiple areas and industries in the Richmond community. “The group came together with specific skills unique to themselves

Residents can vote on Steveston lights The 12 members of the Richmond Christmas Fund committee. Photo submitted and contributed at a high level to make the events happen,” said Duzita. “The 12 members who have been together, this year particularly, have done a job that I did not think at the beginning of the year was really possible.” The committee includes Ed Gavsie, CEO of Richmond Cares Richmond Gives (RCRG); Eda Koot, with Pacific Gateway Hotel; Gail Terry and Kim McLachlan, with Richmond Automall; Sharon Bonner, with All Bright Designs; Alvin Chow, publisher of the Richmond News; Rick Duff; Jocelyn Wong, with RCRG; Christine Brodie, city representative; and co-chairs Michael Chiu and Rob Howard with the Richmond Christmas Fund. And while many fundraising events had to be cancelled this year because of pandemic restrictions, the community came together in a different way. The Richmond Christmas Fund

launched an “angel donor” program, where donors would donate $10,000 each to help with the annual event, and to the committee’s surprise, eight donors contributed — four times the anticipated goal. “Our ‘angel donors’ have become the base of the funding for the Christmas Fund and we have received more than what we thought we could get, which gives us an incredible base this year,” said Duzita. The committee, he added, had to re-imagine one of their biggest fundraisers for the Christmas Fund — A Not So Silent Night auction — that could no longer take place. This year’s auctions will be taking place online, one is a pay to play and the other a public auction. Thirty individuals have paid $1,000 to bring nine of their friends to the private reserve auction to bid for car-related activities, while the public auction goes out to the “army list” and the community.

Matthew McBride is usually the master of ceremonies at Richmond’s Remembrance Day event. File photo

While some people may always watch the Remembrance Day ceremony on their television, Richmond will see no parade and a very quiet No. 3 Road this year, and this worries the event’s organizer. Matthew McBride, master of ceremonies for Remembrance Day, said Remembrance Day has gone through many “different permutations” in the past 121 years, but this year’s significantly smaller event could undermine the meaning of the day. “I would think this year’s diminished event will not be satisfactory to a large portion of the public,” said McBride, adding that Richmond’s ceremony has involved up to 1,000 people each year. “The modern interpretations (of Remembrance Day ceremonies) that we know today are quite large and heavily supported by the public, city hall and the entire community, but with the lack of people

“There are some hurdles we have to overcome, but the outcome of the campaign is yet to be seen and that depends on the hands of fate right now.” McBride told the Richmond News that the Legion depends on young cadets, also known as “taggers,” outside shopping malls to help fundraise for the poppy campaign, which contributes to more than 50 per cent of their donations. “The donations brought in by taggers vary, but we normally see tens of thousands through the fundraiser,” said McBride.

Richmond is represented by the Royal Canadian Legion and the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada.

“Not every member is willing to go out and engage in the public in the weeks prior to Remembrance Day and not every company that sponsors a poppy donation box is willing to have one this year,” said McBride, adding that many are fearful of

McBride, who is a member in both organizations, said COVID-19 has dramatically affected their poppy fund campaign

However, because the cadet program is not taking part this year, he said their fundraising is likely to see a 50 per cent drop in donations this year. While the year is tough for everyone, McBride hopes people will stop for two minutes on Nov. 11 wherever they may be and just “remember.” “Just take two minutes to stop and pause. Remember.”

Touchless poppy donation boxes being rolled out Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

With the pandemic still gripping the country, the Royal Canadian Legion has partnered with HSBC Bank Canada to make it safer and easier than ever to donate and wear a poppy with touchless HSBC “Pay Tribute” tap-enabled donation boxes. The bank worked with technology partners to ensure the program is on trend with the latest digital solutions, whether it be through “tap” enabled credit cards or mobile and wearable options like Apple Pay. Canadians can make an optional donation of $2 by placing their tap enabled payment card or tap and pay technology device on the glowing poppy, and take a poppy to wear. The HSBC “Pay Tribute” boxes have also been designed in the shape of the headstones of our fallen; bearing the words of the Halifax Cenotaph national monument;

and invoking Flanders Fields, of course — the very inspiration for Remembrance Day itself.

Three branches in Richmond have the boxes — two on No. 3 Road and one at Hazelbridge Way. “We are excited to present this new way to make it easier for Canadians to donate during the National Poppy Campaign,” said Thomas D. Irvine, Dominion President for the legion. “We are pleased to partner with HSBC Bank Canada on this…initiative and hope that it will grow in the years to come.” Amongst the traditional poppy boxes found coast to coast, a total of 250 HSBC “Pay Tribute” donation boxes have been distributed nationally across the HSBC Bank Canada branch and within select Royal Canadian Legion branches and other locations. For more information on where the boxes are, visit www.hsbc.ca/paytribute.

And while many elementary and high schools will be broadcasting their own renditions of virtual ceremonies, R.C. Palmer secondary definitely felt a significant change to their Remembrance Day plans. The high school choir has sung for the City of Richmond’s Remembrance Day ceremonies the past six years. Music teacher Iris Chan said the shift from playing live music to recording is “different” and making everyone more “self-conscious.” “Instead of singing and playing music for the school audience and for the city’s event in front of thousands of people, we’re now singing to a microphone and a camera,” said Chan, adding that having to record several times can be exhausting. “We had to think of a creative way to still allow the choir and band to perform and to contribute to the school community even though we can’t gather in person anymore. “School still has to happen, learning still has to happen and 21

music still has to be created.”

Asked if the meaning of the poem “In Flanders Fields” would be undermined in a recorded performance, Chan said the piece is the “spirit of past and present soldiers” and that as long as it is performed the meaning is still strong. “We still look at the meaning, the text and what each phrase represents. Physically the soldiers may not exist anymore, but their spirit is still carried through this poem and as long as we still sing and recite it, their sacrifice is remembered,” said Chan.

The students at Palmer, added Chan, have taken pride in their Remembrance Day performance ever since performing at the city’s annual ceremony five years ago. “They take it seriously every year and look forward to putting on the best performance for the community. “Even though we aren’t performing for the whole city this time, the students are still performing their best because they always feel so honoured to be singing and playing for this special day.”

Poppy Fund teams up with London Drugs Retailers raising more funds for veterans Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Now more than ever, people need to be reminded they are not alone.

With COVID-19 concerns and precautions limiting volunteers and more people following guidance to stay home, London Drugs is launching a new campaign to help the Royal Canadian Legion with donations to its annual National Poppy Campaign. While poppy boxes will still appear at London Drugs locations — as they do every year — the retailer is hoping to help raise additional funds for veterans through a new campaign in partnership with Carlton Cards. BE KIND invites Canadians to send handwritten cards to friends, families, and neighbours, to show appreciation and brighten their day. “This fund is critical to the work we do across the country to help our Veterans and we are thankful for the additional support this year,” said Thomas D. Irvine, CD, Dominion President of the legion. The BE KIND campaign will see a portion of sales from all Carlton or Papyrus Greeting Cards between Nov. 1 and 11 going directly to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Trust Fund. Customers can visit any London Drugs store and pick out cards to give. “Now more than ever, people need to be reminded they are not alone,” said Clint Mahlman, London Drugs’ president and CEO. “Whether that is sending love to a

CLINT MAHLMAN friend or family member or showing your appreciation to a veteran whom you’ve never met, sending a personalized written message can be so meaningful — particularly at a time when social distancing has left many feeling isolated.” For the first time ever, the legion is discouraging spectators from attending Remembrance Day ceremonies in person in order to limit gathering sizes and adhere to physical distancing measures. Donations made during the campaign go directly into the Legion’s Poppy Trust Fund. The funds raised locally are used to help with a range of supports and services for Veterans and their families. It can include emergency funding, helping Veterans get off the streets, completing benefit applications or establishing and supporting programs to help tackle operational stress injuries. For more information on the campaign, go to Legion.ca.

The City of Richmond recognized a fallen RCMP officer just before Remembrance Day, when the country will stop in silence to remember those whose lives were taken to protect our country. City council announced two roads in Richmond will be named after Const. Jimmy Ng, an RCMP officer who was killed in a hit and run in 2002. Cst. Jimmy Ng Road and Cst. Jimmy Ng Place will be part of the CF Richmond Centre redevelopment project. Ng was killed on duty on Sept. 15, 2002, when a car ran a red light at No. 3 Road and Williams in a street race. The driver fled the scene but was later found and given a two-year sentence. One Richmond officer, who wanted to remain anonymous, was at the scene. “I will never forget the radio call checking on his status and silence in return, and then the sound of the officer on the radio who first found him,” the RCMP officer remembered. Supt. Will Ng, Officer in Charge of the Richmond detachment, said the RCMP are “humbled” and grateful to the city for this “kind and thoughtful gesture.” Jimmy Ng grew up in Richmond. He was sworn in as an RCMP officer in 1996 and first served in Duncan before returning to Richmond, his hometown. Constable killed in 1980

Const. Jimmy Ng will have two roads named after him. Masks support cancer foundation

Karen Lorena Parker wears one of her six mask designs she is selling to fundraise for BC Cancer Foundation. Submitted photo

The thought of helping others was always on a Burkeville freelance artist’s mind when COVID-19 hit. But it wasn’t until she wanted to hear more about the healthcare community that she knew how she could help. Karen Lorena Parker wanted to

amplify stories of the province’s unsung heroes by partnering with the BC Cancer Foundation in a fundraiser through custom-designed masks. She is launching a collection of six face masks with her signature floral designs and for every one sold, $5 will be donated to the BC

Cancer Foundation. And for every mask bought, patrons are entered into a draw for one of Parker’s paintings. “I launched my own artwork to have that conversation about how we can care for our community,” said Parker.

Q:

I have asthma. Do I still need my inhaled corticosteroid if I feel ok?

A:

Yes. Asthma is a chronic condition that involves inflammation and narrowing of the airways. Asthma can be different for everyone and your symptoms may change over time. But some degree of inflammation can be present, even when you are unaware of any symptoms. For those who have severe and persistent asthma symptoms, inhaled corticosteroids are the most effective anti-inflammatory medication to reduce airway swelling and mucus production. People with asthma sometimes forget or choose not to take their anti-inflammatory medications, especially during periods when they are feeling well. When asthma symptoms suddenly appear such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath or coughing, people often use a rescue inhaler or bronchodilator. This type of inhaler expands the airways and provides relief from an asthma attack. If it is used more than two times per week however, it may be a sign that your asthma is not well-controlled. Bronchodilators alone do not treat the underlying inflammation. At the first sign of worsening of asthma symptoms, you should re-start your inhaled corticosteroid if you have stopped it, in addition to using a bronchodilator. You should not stop using your inhaled corticosteroid regularly at any time unless you have discussed this with your doctor. It is also advised to review proper inhaler technique or discuss the use of a spacer device with your pharmacist to ensure optimal delivery of inhaled medications.

She added BC Cancer Foundation was onboard with the idea of putting “cancer patient art on masks” as a fundraiser.

“I wanted these art masks to amplify how we care for our community, the immunosuppressed, our healthcare workers.

“Whether you wear a mask or not wear a mask, if you have someone next to you who is immune-suppressed or immunocompromised, how are people prepared to care for them.” Parker told the Richmond News she had to work through the stress of the pandemic and

“What else can you do but to get creative during this time,” she added. “My artwork is an expressive realism and I want to take this opportunity to start that conversa-

in noisy situation or when someone is talking from the side of the impaired ear. A type of hearing aid called CROS can be of considerable help for those people. A transmitter located on the poorer ear sends a wireless Near Field Magnetic Induction (NFMI) signal to a receiver on the better ear so people can achieve a fuller, more immersive open sound experience. CROS enables people with single-sided deafness to effectively hear and engage during their conversation. This technology can not restore all the benefits of binaural processing, while it can eliminate the head-shadow effect very well and improve auditory localization ability for effective communication. CROS technology has been proved to be a treatment option for people with single sided deafness. Please contact us if you would like to try a free demo.

HIV self-test gets green light Rapid test pilot hours… So we really do need this test to be one of the extra lines of defence, another way to try and help end this epidemic,” Zaharik said.

Kirsten Clarke KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

An HIV self-test developed by Richmond-based bioLytical Laboratories is the first of its kind to be approved in Canada. Health Canada granted a license for the one-minute, finger-prick blood test — known as the Insti HIV Self Test — on Monday. It’s a move that was long-awaited, said Michelle Zaharik, bioLytical’s chief scientific officer. “Many countries already have an HIV self-test approved for use…and so it does feel like it has been a real long delay before it’s been able to be approved in Canada.” It’s hoped the test will help fight HIV in Canada, where 63,000 people are estimated to be living with the disease, said Zaharik. Of that number, 14 per cent — about 9,000 people — are undiagnosed. On top of that, most of the 6,400 new HIV infections that Canada sees each year are coming from people who don’t know they have the disease. “That breaks down to six new diagnoses per day, or one every four

The self-test will also be helpful to remote communities that might not have access to clinical testing. Zaharik explained that the test was based off a point-of-care HIV test bioLytical launched in 2006. While the tests are similar — both involve a finger-prick similar to a Diabetes bloodglucose test — there are fewer steps involved with the home-test. However, once someone performs a self-test they will still need to go and get a secondary test, said Zaharik, adding that the Insta HIV Self Test package includes a list of regional support networks that people can call.

across the country. In a trial — led by Dr. Sean Rourke with the Centre for Urban Health Solutions at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto — that ran from August 2019 to March 2020, 720 Canadians from “key populations” at risk for HIV were given access to the test, said Zaharik.

We really do need this test to be one of the extra lines of defence...and help end this epidemic. MICHELLE ZAHARIK

In order to be approved by Health Canada, bioLytical needed to be able to prove that the test could be used accurately and correctly by Canadians

More than 95 per cent of participants in that study said they would recommend the test to family, friends and sexual partners. That’s good news, said Zaharik, and demonstrates the test could help combat the stigma and shame people may feel by going in to get tested for HIV — in addition to helping raise awareness of the disease.

“That word of mouth is going to be really, really important to be able to really make an impact on bringing down our HIV infection rates,” she said.

readies for take-off Vancouver International Airport and WestJet are aiming to get a COVID-19 rapid test pilot up and running some time this month. Rather than target specific routes, testing will be carried out in a four-hour daily window in order to capture WestJet’s departing domestic flights, said YVR executives Robyn McVicker and Billy Nolen, WestJet’s, in a joint announcement posted to the airport’s website on Monday. “The pilot will target Lower Mainland residents to ensure anyone testing positive can easily return home,” said McVicker and Nolen. Meanwhile, Citizen Care Pod will provide a “readymade testing station,” located on the curb outside WestJet’s domestic check-in area at YVR, according to Monday’s announcement. McVicker and Nolen say the 40-foot pod will provide “a private, safe and comfortable environment” to carry out testing. The pod will also be climate-controlled and utilize HEPA filters “to ensure the air is as sterile as any hospital environment.” A spokesperson for YVR said the pod will only be in place for the pilot study and is not a permanent solution, and that YVR is also developing a web portal and will likely have passengers sign up in advance for testing.

The tests will be available for sale this week on Insti.com.

Q: Hi Rob, Does your company work with

FortisBC ? Fortis seem to be advertising rebates a lot. Is there anything I need to know before I hire someone in regards to getting rebates? Steve - Tsawwassen

A:

Hi Steve, Good Question. I’m always surprised when people don’t take advantage of things like Rebates. FortisBC offers a vast amount of rebates all year long. They change who, how much and on what appliance, quite regularly but, their focus is on promoting the use of Natural Gas Products. The one constant qualifier is that if you are working with Gas, you need a company or Journeyman who is a Certified Gas Fitter. This will give you safety and piece of mind as well as make sure you are compliant and able to claim any appropriate rebates. PJB Mechanical employs Qualified, Journeyman, Plumbers and Gas Fitters and we are part of the FortisBC Trade Ally Network. FortisBC currently has seasonal rebates on the cleaning and maintenance of all of your basic home heating appliances, (Fireplaces, Boilers,Tankless Water Heaters), of up to $50 per unit. FortisBC website lists all the rebates available. As an old Poker player once said, “Never leave free money sitting on the table”.

Nearly one-third (32.6 per cent) of businesses reported 10 per cent or more of their workforce was teleworking or working remotely on May 29, 2020, which was almost twice the level reported just three months earlier on Feb. 1, 2020. The report also suggests that once COVID-19 is over, close to one-quarter (22.5 per cent) of businesses expect that 10 per cent or more of their workforce will continue to telework. While that works for some, it doesn’t for all. Working in an alternative space during the day could help, according to Notman. Along with a desk, WiFi and plug-ins, Accent Inns provides coffee and tea and a comfy bed for daytime naps, said Notman, adding that “we won’t tell.”

The Regional Animal Protection Society (RAPS) wishes to clarify statements attributed to our CEO in an October 27, 2020 Richmond News article. The intention was to convey certainty that the interests of RAPS’ employees are guaranteed both by the good faith of RAPS management and by the representation of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 718. RAPS’ remarks to the Richmond News were meant to express confidence in CUPE’s determination to safeguard the rights of RAPS employees. They were in no way intended to imply that the union was negligent in that responsibility. An organizer of a recent demonstration implied alignment with the union but the union denied that association. RAPS’ position is that statements by demonstrators were misleading. RAPS is satisfied that the union was not behind the demonstration. RAPS wishes to clarify that CUPE was involved and engaged in the process around the recent dismissal of some employees. The union’s presence in the process reassured RAPS’ management and Board that the rights of these former employees were respected to the full extent of the law and in the spirit of the collective agreement currently being negotiated. RAPS regrets and apologizes for any misunderstanding in this matter and we look forward to working with the union.

COVID tool boosts Jets Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

For Eric Bernal, president of the Richmond Jets Minor Hockey Association, the timing could not have been better. After around five months of a pandemic-induced ban on most youth sports, the City of Richmond was set to open its ice arenas again in August. However, the logistics of performing health checks on every single player and coach entering the facilities for practices and games was going to be challenging, to say the least. Thankfully, for Bernal and the thousands of Jets players eager to get back on the ice, around the same time, TeamSnap — a popular organizational app used by amateur sports teams in North America — launched its own

Health Check tool.

practice or a game.

Eyeing the opportunity to streamline and navigate a previously difficult and time-consuming process of screening everyone entering an arena, the Jets were one of the first organizations in Canada to roll out the TeamSnap Health Check across its entire network of teams.

“It gets turned on about four hours before a game or practice and each player will go into it and answer the questions,” he said.

“Most of the teams were already using TeamSnap, so it was an incredibly easy transition,” Bernal told the Richmond News.

“Once they check them all off, their screen turns green and when they walk into the arena, they show that to the team manager and then they can enter. It’s a quick way of letting a team know that everyone is feeling OK.”

“It’s amazing, so much is done on TeamSnap now, including registering players. Their COVID screening became apparent to us in late July I think.

Bernal said the club basically has to police itself when it comes to making sure people entering city arenas are healthy and, previously, volunteers were having to do it.

“Then we started talking with the city and they decided on Aug. 24 as an opening date. That aligned perfectly for when the health check app was being released.”

He said no one is allowed in the arenas at the moment, other than the players and coaches, with teams playing competitive games in small, cohort bubbles.

The beauty of it, added Bernal, is that the screening tool is tied to each event, whether it be a team

“The kids are so happy to get back out on the ice, let’s hope it continues.”

Denturist Intern REQUIRING PATIENTS with the following for new and existing conditions: • Dental Plates • Full Dentures • Dentures over Implants • Partial Dentures • Relines & Repairs

TERAGUCHI, Donna March 11, 1962 − October 19, 2020 It is with great sadness and a heavy heart, we announce Donna’s passing on October 19, 2020. She was predeceased by her father, Henry. Donna is survived by her mother, Jean; sisters, Geri (Ted) and Helen; nieces, Kianna (Jordan) and Hayley; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Donna was diagnosed with breast cancer in March and was always hopeful during her treatments. She fought her cancer bravely to the end and passed peacefully with her family by her side. Donna cherished and adored her nieces and their pets, Binky and Fritz, as they brought her so much joy. She loved the beach, meeting her friends for coffee, lunch, dinner, or shopping, and travelling; most recently to Europe, which was a life−long dream of hers. Donna will be remembered for her keen eye for design, style, and "get it done" attitude. She led with her heart and was always looking for meaningful gifts to give to those she cared about. We wish to thank those who were a part of her life and brought her happiness. There will be a private service, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Agency or the Make−A−Wish Foundation. Forever in our hearts.

ARASON, Donald W. September 1, 1943 − October 22, 2020 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Don Arason on October 22, 2020, at the Salvation Army Rotary Hospice. Don was born on September 1, 1943, to his late parents, Walter and Beulah Arason, in Fort Frances, Ontario. He was raised in Ontario, Manitoba, and Alberta. It was in Edmonton, Alberta while working for CN where he met his wife, Carol, and where his two sons, Jeff and Jon were born. In 1980, the family moved to Richmond, where Don enjoyed living for 40−years. Don was a caring husband, and a loving father and grandfather. Don loved working on his home, enjoying his cars, appreciating Carol’s art, and most recently, spending time with his neighbours in the cul−de− sac. He is predeceased by his lifelong love, Carol Arason in 2003; his care and devotion to her during the many years of her illness were inspirational to his family. He is survived by his sons, Jeff (Tara) and Jon (Shelley); three grandchildren, Eli, Ada, and Abigail; and sisters, Carole and Bev.
