John attended the Holocaust Remembrance Day at The Bayit in Richmond along with the other three Richmond MLAs Linda Reid, Teresa Wat and Jas Johal in January.

John presented a community gaming grant to the Institute of Applied Design & Technology Education Society at McMath Secondary School in February.

John attended the 47th Steveston International Karate Championships and presented the John Yap MLA Cup to a winning athlete in February.

Dear constituents: The summer legislative session has now adjourned, concluding an unprecedented hybrid session where, for the first time in Canadian history, MLA’s attended the Legislature both online and in-person. In spite of the unique situation, my caucus colleagues and I spared no time to help British Columbians in need and to hold the NDP accountable.

John supported the COVID-19 relief fund organized by the Vancouver Diamond Lions Club at the Richmond Centre Mall in February.

As opposition, we raised concerns about the lack of support for strata property owners facing skyrocketing insurance costs, the continually rising opioid drug crisis, an increasing homeless population and the government’s failure to provide proper supports for supportive housing, which has been problematic for many communities. We also advocated for ICBC rebates given the Covid-19 related savings at the auto insurer. The NDP has fallen short for British Columbians by not adequately responding to their economic needs. With a record $12.5-billion-dollar deficit, B.C. needs a recovery plan. Helping the economy get back on track means supporting small businesses, especially our restaurant, hospitality and tourism sectors which have been hard hit by Covid-19; as the opposition critic for liquor, I advocated for more common sense changes to liquor laws and introduced a Private Member’s Bill to support small business.

John supported Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives’ fundraising campaign which featured their masks, available by donation.

Furthermore, parents of K-12 students are feeling stressed as they look to the fall, and will now spend the next two weeks worrying about how they will find child care, what kind of after-school care they will need, or whether they may have to stay home with their children. The Education Ministry is expected to announce their plan just a week before classes are set to begin, despite having 5 months to develop a framework for a safe start to school. I have heard from many parents who are concerned with the government’s approach to reopening schools. I encourage all constituents to stay safe, be conscious of others, and follow provincial health guidelines as we cope with the pandemic. It is my honour and privilege to serve as your MLA for Richmond Steveston. Have a safe, healthy and happy rest of summer! Yours sincerely,

John and his colleagues of the BC Liberal Caucus supported the anti-bullying Pink Shirt Day in front of the Legislature Building in February 2020.

Pandemic killed Peru, awoke B.C. beauty EEDMONDS@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

I recently had a birthday. I won’t get into specifics, but let’s just say it was a big one. Last year around this time, I thought I should do something amazing to celebrate. I had been whining about not doing enough international travel (California, Arizona and hikes at Mt. Baker don’t count), so my partner suggested 2020 was the year we should make it happen.

One of my projects throughout the past seven months has been to make a list of the positive adaptations we’ve made to this otherwise horrible virus. No, I didn’t get to Peru this year and may not next, but we live in one beautiful part of the world and I’m grateful to be reminded of that fact.

31 things to do in Richmond this summer

And here’s the other thing, it was a fantastic trip. We camped in non-reservable recreation sites and off a dirt road by a rushing river. We hiked to the top of Mt. Frosty in Manning and Flat Iron north of Hope, wandered through some stunning subalpine meadows full of wild flowers, swam in some crazy cold lakes and met some lovely folks who lent us their kayak.

Anyway, it seemed this could be the answer to our vacation plans. We would explore close to home, sleep on the side of the road if need be and wear Birkenstocks and bandanas — okay, maybe not the last, although we did flash the peace sign to other Westfalia drivers. (It’s truly a cult.)

He bought it 30 years ago, and my parents have taken it far and wide. Now, it’s mainly used for little putt-putts to the river where they drink tea and read books, but it’s still their get-away.

Given all this, we felt we had to stay within towing range. We did venture to a lake north of Princeton, but apart from that our whole two weeks were spent in and around Hope and Manning Park.

Finally, in August we took a couple of weeks off, but what to do? We had no interest in getting on a plane and all the campgrounds were full.

First we thought of Italy, but it occurred to me I could travel to Italy for my next milestone. No, this milestone I needed to take advantage of my *ahem* relative youth, since we only go in one direction.

Making the best of a bad situation: School board chair

At this time of the year, Board Chairs routinely send out a message welcoming everyone back from summer vacation and asking drivers to be careful when driving near schools. So welcome back, and drivers please be careful when driving near our schools. What is not routine is asking everyone to come back to school in the midst of a COVID-19 pandemic. As of Aug. 26, all districts in the province were required to submit their Return to School Plan to the Ministry of Education. In developing our plan, our administration team worked long hours talking with stakeholders, listening to staff, and reading emails from concerned parents. I should also note that they, too, are parents, grandparents, family members to those who work in schools, and members of families who live in multi-generational homes. Trustees have received an array of comments from, “I have no problem sending my kids back to

school” to “my child will never return to school under the present conditions.” Given the range of feedback received and the concerns communicated, it is doubtful that we will come up with a plan that will completely satisfy everyone. It is likely that some will receive the plan positively, some will be apprehensive, and some will find it unacceptable. Regardless, we are going to keep working on our plan until all the children who want to be in school — are in school. On behalf of my fellow Trustees, I would like to thank everyone for their emails.

We are trying to respond to as many of them as we can. As a result of your feedback, Trustees recently sent a letter to the Minister of Education requesting more flexibility in the start-up scheduling. We also requested that the ministry allow for the district to hold spots for our families who want to explore other educational options.

In closing, please keep the following in mind: Whatever plan we implement — it will be closely monitored and adjusted when it’s appropriate to do so.

It will not be a case of “let’s try this for a year, and see what happens.” The daily COVID-19 reports from Dr. Henry and her team continue to inform the planning and guidance we receive from the Ministry of Education, and the ongoing dialogue and collaboration with our stakeholder groups will let us know whether we need to modify our plan. The past six months have been unlike any that we have witnessed in the past — but we are going to get through it. And we are going to do it by working together and by making the best of a very difficult situation.

Dreaming of a quiet life in Richmond Dear Editor, I think it is time for city council to prohibit the use of engine brakes. I live on Westminster Highway and experience an ever-increasing use of those devices. Our neighbour cities (Vancouver, Delta, New Westminster) have banned engine brakes. Yet here the dump trucks noisily rumbling, snorting and sputtering along the road, while ignoring the little weathered sign on the roadside reading: “PLEASE avoid use of engine brakes in urban areas.” It definitely has gotten worse in time. Being on the subject of preventable noise, another menace: Folks who keep a rooster in their backyard, that crows all day, make very selfish and inconsiderate neighbours. It is okay for people to have chickens for fresh eggs, but that can be done quietly. Please, city council, make the city quieter and more livable.

School plan ‘disturbing’ Open letter to the parents of B.C. students,

As a long-time educator, I find the lack of an online option in B.C.’s Back To School Plan extremely disturbing. Distance Learning, which is being advocated as an alternative by the government, is hardly equipped to deal with the amount of parents requesting online learning options for their children. Moreover, it takes the child out of their school community. Schools lose funding, children may lose their place in specialized programs, and students lose their connection to their school. When I left in June, I expected to see, upon my return, a robust online platform consistent across districts, instead of one cobbled together by individual teachers on the fly. I assumed an online platform would be used in conjunction with in-person classes where students would alternate days, thus reducing class sizes to a maximum of 15. Instead, all of these ideas were jettisoned in favour of a full return, with protocols less strict than the local Costco and Walmart. Masks in class? No. Temperature checks?

No. Physical barriers? No. Small class sizes? No. Online learning from school? No. Being a parent of two young children myself, I understand that online learning inconveniences parents. It is not much fun for teachers either. As a music teacher, there is nothing I enjoy more than hearing my students make music together. However, online learning is a vital component that should not have been discarded. The current Back To School Plan completely fails special needs students with conditions such as autism, immune-compromised students, those students being raised by grandparents and anyone with elders at home. Unfortunately, whenever the teachers’ union takes up a cause, it invariably becomes politicized. My message to parents, as a teacher of more than 20 years, is simple: Don’t let the BCTF fight your battles for you. No one cares about your child more than you do. B.C. children deserve a better plan. Speak now. Act now!

Village needs Mask-wearing policy dubious new angle Dear Editor,

Recently I went to a big box store in Richmond and was asked to leave due to not having a mask. I returned to my work truck to look for a mask and found an old dirty dust mask on the passenger floor.

Dear Editor, I commend the city for their actions related to COVID-19, but I don’t understand the new parking and traffic flow in Steveston. I agree that the village traffic should be one way, but I think the parking should be angle parking on both sides of the street. This would provide at least twice the parking. We could adjust the angle parking to ensure social distancing by keeping it on one side of the street until the pandemic is no longer an issue. This would provide more parking and a better flow.

If a business place or establishment is going to make masks mandatory, then masks should be supplied to the customer. I understand wearing a mask is a government policy to protect people, but if a business chooses to stay open and follow these policies, then complimentary masks should be provided.

While we’re at it, can we get rid of the ridiculous crosswalk at No. 1 Road and Moncton? While this may be a great idea in Tokyo (where they see 2,500 people crossing per minute) here in Steveston we just don’t need it. It just ends up with all cars stopped while one person crosses using the “scramble” crosswalk.

I retrieved the items required and lined up at the checkout where I encountered an employee not wearing a mask. It raises the question, why are we customers required to protect you against ourselves, but your employees are not required to protect us from them?

Woman, 80, mauled by ‘pit-bull type’ dog Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The extent of the wound suffered by the 80-yearold woman in Richmond on Monday evening.

The family of an 80-year-old Richmond woman mauled by a “pit-bull type” dog is warning the public to beware after a terrifying attack. According to Davina Oszla, her motherin-law, Gian Ozla, was out for her twicedaily walk around 7 p.m. on Monday when she heard a dog barking close to Francis and Kirkmond roads, just west of No. 1 Road. Seconds later, she was set upon by what eye witnesses and police officers later described as a “pit-bull type” dog, which jumped on her, causing her to fall onto the road and hit her head. Dazed from the impact, she looked up to see the snarling dog lunge at her as she put up her hand to defend herself. It was then, according to Davina, that the dog clamped its jaws around the frail woman’s hand, before starting to pull

back, with her hand still firmly in its grip. “Luckily, there was a young gentleman who was putting his garbage cans away. He saw this and ran over making noise, stomping his feet. The dog let go, but was trying to come back at her,” said Davina. “By that time the (dog) owner came out and I guess got the dog inside. There was blood all over the road and (the man who saved her) flagged down a car to call an ambulance. The ambulance station is right there at No. 1 and Williams, so they were there very quickly.

“I find it all so upsetting as she is a very kind and cheery 80-year-old. She doesn’t deserve this at all. She is so upset as well. It breaks our hearts.” In a bizarre twist, however, Davina was told how the dog owner continually tried to intervene when the paramedics were treating Gian, pleading with her not to call the police as the “dog was his life” and he didn’t want it to get put down. “The paramedics had to call the police as the (dog) owner wasn’t letting them treat her,” added Davina.

ed with them not to call the police. “She’s better now; she was at the hospital until about 3 a.m. last night,” Davina told the Richmond News Tuesday. She has heard unconfirmed reports that the dog has bitten someone before and is frightened it will happen again. And Davina claimed Richmond RCMP officers have tried to speak to the dog owner, but he refused to answer the door. “Without a warrant, they couldn’t go enter the home,” added Davina.

“She doesn’t speak English, but (the paramedics) managed to call us and we raced over. She was in shock. It was a horrible ordeal. But when we got there the dog owner started shouting at me not to call the police.”

“I’ve been told the city’s bylaw department is also investigating it.

Gian was taken to hospital to be treated for her gaping wound and concussion.

The News has reached out to the RCMP for further details.

However, the ordeal was still far from over as, according to Davina, the dog owner turned up at Richmond Hospital, demanding to see them and again plead-

“I just want people to know about the danger in that area.” Davina hailed the man who stepped in to help Gian as the “true hero” of the day.

The City of Richmond said it’s currently investigating the incident and is also trying to determine if the dog has bitten before.

Businesses send out COVID-19 alerts Alan Campbell ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Richmond businesses continue to shutter their doors to do thorough cleaning when exposure to COVID-19 has been identified. Richmond Centre issues COVID alert to tenants Richmond Centre shopping mall alerted all of its store owners and managers after a case of COVID-19 was confirmed at one of its tenants. The mall’s general manager, Sheila Luft, issued the notice on Monday, stating a case of the virus had been confirmed at Vans.

closed immediately and is undergoing a “deep-clean” this week.

Possible exposure at Steveston Pool unconfirmed

Luft added, after consulting VCH, no further action was necessary and the shopping centre would remain open to the public.

There has also apparently been exposure to COVID-19 at Steveston Outdoor Pool, but no public notification was made.

Richmond Centre alerted its tenants of a positive COVID-19 case in the shopping centre.

She then urged all of the centre’s tenants to take the lead of Vans and alert the authorities as soon as possible about a confirmed or suspected case of the virus among staff, customers or contractors. The Richmond News asked the centre if this was its first confirmed case of COVID-19 and if the affected person was staff or a customer, but has not heard back. Badminton Centre closed due to COVID

Luft said the store acted immediately by notifying both the shopping centre, owned by Cadillac Fairview, and Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).

In the meantime, Richmond’s ClearOne Badminton Centre voluntarily closed its doors after one of its customers recently tested positive for COVID-19.

According to the notice, the store

The centre posted on its website

The City of Richmond wouldn’t confirm whether there was a positive COVID-19 case at the pool — they follow guidelines from Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) on whether or not to let the public know about cases in their facilities, explained city spokesperson Clay Adams.

Google streetview photo on Monday an individual, who was at their facility between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Aug. 18, tested positive for the virus. According to the post, ClearOne also believes a player who was in the facility on Aug. 5 also tested positive. This case was reported to health authorities, but they didn’t respond as the exposure

was outside the 14-day period. “The safety of our patrons is our top priority, and we will continue to sanitize daily in addition to following best practices for COVID-19, including wearing face masks, social distancing, and limiting the number of people in the facility at one time,” said ClearOne in a statement.

If VCH determines the city’s contact tracing has been adequate, that is, everyone who was possibly exposed to a case of COVID-19 has been notified, and the proper personal protective equipment was used, there isn’t any need to inform the public. “We defer to VCH on the need and level of need for public notification,” Adams said.

$2,300 COVID fine issued Kirsten Clarke & Maria Rantanen EDITOR@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A Richmond business was handed a $2,300 fine Saturday just a day after RCMP were given the power to crack down on businesses and individuals defying COVID-19 public health orders. Richmond RCMP say they went to a private sports centre in the 2300 block of No. 6 Road — near Burrows Road — after hearing complaints that management there wasn’t following physical distancing rules. At 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 22, officers arrived at the sports centre and found “a significant amount of people past the 50-person limit, as set out in requirements of the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) guidelines,” reads a release from RCMP. “It was also learned that the location was doing little to encourage social distancing, proper sanitization or contact tracing.”

a $2,300 violation ticket under the new COVID-19 Related Measures Act, after it was clear those at the event wouldn’t comply with health orders. “Initially, investigators took an educational approach when dealing with the participants and spectators at the facility, but it was quite clear that the business needed further incentive to comply with the PHO’s guidelines,” said Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Ian Henderson. Mounties say they also attended “a number of private gatherings” over the weekend, but chose to educate people rather than issue violation tickets. Under the COVID-19 Related Measures Act — which was announced on Friday by Solicitor General Mike Farnworth —individuals can be fined $230 if they refuse to follow safety plans of businesses or event organizers. “It is disappointing that people still aren’t getting the message,” said Henderson.

“We have made government aware that our officers are ready to support enforcement of orders should government choose to make that happen,” he added.

Retailer fed up with maggot infestation Valerie Leung

VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A Richmond retailer in Empire Centre Mall is frustrated with the lack of direction from government officials in helping the mall deal with an ongoing maggot infestation. Mina Lau, who has been working at the mall for more than 20 years, said she and other shop owners are at a loss with getting help with the “disgusting” sight of thousands of maggots in front of their businesses. “We started noticing the maggots around the beginning of August, and we’re not talking about just several of them, but thousands of them,” said Lau.

U-pick realtor says sorry Nono Shen

NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Vancouver Costal Health (VCH), one of the many who Lau asked for help, sent a representative to inspect the infestation. That person told management to “wash them away with water,” and because the infestation is on private property, it’s not a “government problem,” added Lau.

A Richmond real estate company has apologized after a woman called out one of its realtors for picking fruit from a pear tree on her property during a viewing.

VCH spokesperson Deana Lancaster said their environmental health officers conduct inspections of restaurants and food facilities to educate food handlers about safe food handling.

Von Dae said Peter T. Yang, an agent from Luxmore Realty, showed two potential buyers the property last Saturday.

However, it is not the same for retail spaces. “If the maggots are outside, and not inside a premise where food is being prepared, this is not a situation that would warrant action by our inspectors,” said Lancaster in an emailed statement.

“I’ve reached out to provincial government organizations and there seems to be no permanent solution for us.”

The homeowner, Jill Von Dae, took to multiple Facebook groups to share the story.

At some point during the home viewing, Yang noticed a pear tree and berry bushes in the garden. He went outside and started picking the fruit and invited the potential buyers to join him. “Taking advantage of the fact that we weren’t present on site, he started picking the fruit off the trees and eating it. Greedily, he went back to his car and got plastic bags and returned and stood there and picked every last fruit from our garden. He instructed the viewers to happily

join him...They spat all their seeds out all over the ground. Who does this?” Von Dae wrote, adding the garden was the “pride and joy” of her grandmother who recently passed away. Von Dae noted they have footage captured on a home security camera showing Yang taking pears from a tree. She said Yang later offered to give the fruit back as compensation, which she called “ludicrous.” Luxmore Realty issued an apology on its website and Facebook account. “On behalf of Luxmore Realty, my team members and I extend our sincere apologies for the terrible experience one of our clients had with our real estate agent Peter T. Yang. I understand that Peter made a really irresponsible and unprofessional behaviour (decision) during last Saturday’s home showing,” wrote Luxmore Realty’s managing broker Charles Zhou. The apology also states that Yang “feels guilty and regrets his mistakes” and is now making an official apology and providing compensation to the homeowners.

Thieves steal family’s road trip crawled under to take a look and that’s when we saw there was a section missing.

Alan Campbell

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

“They’d taken the catalytic convertor. It was very clean cut, a very professional job.”

Thieves have managed to steal a longawaited staycation road trip from a deserving Richmond family.

The theft of catalytic convertors — for their precious metals — is becoming more widespread across the Lower Mainland, with many police forces reporting brazen incidents.

Melanie Arnis, her husband Brendan Coyle and their 32-year-old daughter Rhianna — who the couple care for — had been planning for weeks for their four-day camping trip to Nicola Lake, near Merritt, in the family’s 24-foot RV. Coyle had spent many hours online trying to snatch a coveted camping site, while Arnis spent several days packing up the vehicle and preparing food for the trip. They were all packed up in the RV in their Steveston driveway Monday morning, seatbelts on and ready to go when Coyle turned the key in the ignition. “We looked at each other and said ‘we’re not going anywhere,’” Arnis told the Richmond News on Tuesday.

Photo submitted “The noise would have shook the house, that’s how we knew something was wrong. It was so loud. “We thought it was the muffler and

“We were angry, there was some crying. It’s very frustrating, all the work I’d put into making food,” said Arnis, adding that the family gets free camping due to their caregiver status for their daughter. “It’s a wonderful thing to have, as we have so many extra costs. This is the one family thing we can do. “We go away every year. We were so excited. Trying to get a campground has been really difficult during the pandemic, but my husband managed to snag these four nights and the weather was sup-

posed to be nice.”

Arnis said the theft must have happened sometime between Monday and 10 days prior, when the RV was last out on the road. “We phoned some repair place but they said we needed to call the police, make an appointment for the repair and have the RV towed to the repair shop,” she added. “The trip was over before it started.” The family have made plans to head to the Island for a couple of nights, but at their own cost. Arnis said the estimated replacement and repairs will be anything between $1,000 and $2,000. “Of course, we lose our $300 deductible. And how do we stop it happening again? You can put a $300 protector plate on it, which is the same cost of the deductible,” she lamented. The News has reached out to Richmond RCMP for comment and more details.

A Richmond parent has been pushing for more remote learning, especially for her son with autism, but also for students whose family members are vulnerable. Kaye Banez learned this week her son can be accommodated by remote learning through the independent school he attends — something that wasn’t clear last week — but because she is immunecompromised herself, she doesn’t want to send her daughter to school either, fearing she will bring home COVID-19.

Richmond public school students — in both elementary and secondary schools — with complex medical needs or who are immune-compromised will have the option of learning from home when school restarts in September. Richmond School District released its back-to-school plan on Wednesday, approved by the Ministry of Education. Schools will launch full-time in September with changes to operations meant to minimize the spread of COVID-19. Students up to Grade 9 will be in school fulltime every day. Students in Grades 10 to 12 will be in school half days with half the class attending in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. Richmond high schools will be divided into four 10-week terms with students taking two courses at a time and staying

within learning groups of 120 students.

Elementary students, who will be in learning groups of 60, will start full-time instruction on Sept. 14 after half-day instruction on Sept. 10 and 11. A learning group will consist of two classes and these might change throughout the year. Safety measures in elementary schools include staggered breaks, adult supervision during lunches, and recess and lunchtime spent outdoors. While students are to remain in their learning groups during instruction, the plan states they can socialize during breaks with other students while maintaining physical distancing. Masks will not be mandatory in classrooms, but they will be in high-traffic areas like hallways. For more information, go to sd38.bc.ca. Search Fall plan for full story online at Richmond-News.com

Long recovery from spinal cord injury Maria Rantanen

Gail Townsley donated plums from her garden to the Richmond Food Bank. Photo submitted

Plums donated Richmondite Gail Townsley said her heart was filled with joy after donating 139 pounds of plums to the Richmond Food Bank last week.

The gesture was made possible through the Richmond Fruit Recovery Program, which coordinates volunteers to collect unused fruit from residential fruit trees and bushes. All produce is split between the owner, the volunteers and the Richmond Food Bank. “Volunteers came, picked up the fruit, loaded it up and measured how much fruit they collected and drove directly to the food bank,” said Townsley. Townsley said she used a bunch of plums from her 10-year-old plum tree to make jam and cake, but there was still a lot left over. Instead of watching the fruit go to waste, she decided to give to the community. Currently, not only is Townsley feeling good about sharing, but her children, who also helped pick the fruit, enjoyed helping others as well, said Townsley. Although it was the first time Townsley participated in the initiative, it won’t be the last. She will invite volunteers to harvest apples again this coming October when her apple tree is ready to be picked. — Nono Shen/Richmond News

Melanie Clay-Smith wonders why the spinal cord has no “backup” — this has crossed her mind as she struggles to help her 62-year-old husband rehabilitate after a fall at home made him a paraplegic.

Richmond resident Geoff ClaySmith has been at GF Strong for months rehabilitating from a spinal cord injury.

Geoff Clay-Smith has been at GF Strong since June, waiting to get strong enough to come home. Melanie said the stories she’s heard there of random accidents, like tripping on a leash that have caused people “catastrophic” injuries, makes her think about how vulnerable people. “The spinal cord has no backup — it’s a fault in the design — (we have) two lungs, two kidneys, two eyes, (but) one heart and spinal cord,” Melanie said. Geoff, who grew up in Richmond, recovered almost fully as a child from polio, left with just one leg handicapped. At 18 months, he ended up in the hospital for a year recovering from the disease that was sweeping across the globe. His parents ended up selling half of their chicken farm on Blundell Road in 1953 to pay for his treatment. But, now, just two years into his retirement as a high school English teacher, he is facing a new physical challenge. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, with a weakened knee, Geoff fell and sustained a C4 spinal injury.

“We were hiding out from COVID, living our little lives and he just fell in the house,” Melanie said. “He wasn’t skydiving, he was just walking through his house and he got struck down.”

needed to bring him home. They will also have to make modifications to doorways and the bathroom to accommodate Geoff’s wheelchair.

Melanie reached out on Facebook for advice on how to cope with this new situation they were facing and her friends encouraged her to start a GoFundMe campaign — she had supported others in the past.

But, not only have the Clay-Smiths received monetary help, the kind words from former students and colleagues have been uplifting, Melanie said.

Geoff is still on a ventilator at GF Strong after spending a month in the ICU at Vancouver General. When he is fully weaned off the ventilator, Melanie is hopeful he will be able to come home to their Williams Road house. So far, the GoFundMe campaign has raised $20,000 to help pay for a wheelchair, a lift, a new bed and mattress as well as other supplies

“Being disabled is so expensive — just terribly expensive,” Melanie said.

Many students from Kitsilano Secondary in Vancouver where he taught English for many years wrote about his impact on them on the GoFundMe page, many mentioning his “booming voice” in the hallways. “Kitsilano has been absolutely brilliant in supporting (the GoFundMe campaign),” Melanie said, adding “They’ve given such warm tributes — that matches any monetary donations to know that he had that impact.”

Extra cleaning needed for shared books Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A group of Richmondites has grown closer after a mother of an 18-month-old toddler started sharing her vast collection of children’s books with her neighbours in July. However, her generosity has also meant the ongoing sanitization of books and insisting parents maintain social distance. In addition to lending kids’ books, Vicky

Ma, who lives in a townhouse complex on Ferndale Road, also sets her daughter’s playhouse and various toys outside their front door to allow other children in the neighourhood to enjoy. “It’s a really beautiful thing to see children accompanied by their parents reading or playing outside, breathing the fresh air and feeling the sun on their skin,” said Ma, an instructor at the University of Calgary, currently on maternity leave in Richmond. This has also required frequent cleaning

and sanitizing; however, she believes it is more than worth it. “I hope my baby girl Vivienne can make good friends in the local community by sharing toys and books with her neighbours,” said Ma, who has similar memories growing up. “And buying books is too expensive nowadays, and I hope this gesture can save people some money,” Ma added. But it’s not only children who are enjoying each other’s company, parents are also

connecting, albeit at a safe distance. “I clearly remember the first day I brought toys and books outside. Parents and their children were relaxing and having fun together,” said Ma. To encourage more children to read, Ma created a WeChat group to ask parents to share their kids’ reading progress via photos. Children who read for 15 days straight will be given a star. Those who collect the most stars by the end of the year will receive a gift from Ma at Christmastime.

Music school wins award in 40th year violin and choir classes at reduced costs for community members.

Winning the city’s Arts Education award has helped propel Richmond Music School forward in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to board president Ginna Ng. Ng said the award, handed out at the annual Richmond Arts Awards — held online this year — is not only “great recognition” for the school, but also an “assurance” for their hard work during these difficult times. “It’s a pleasant surprise and an honour to receive the award especially during COVID-19, because there has been a bit of change and people are uncertain how things are proceeding,” said Ng. “Being able to receive this award gives us recognition for our hard work and it’s worthwhile — especially for our 40th anniversary.” Richmond Music School provides lessons in piano,

They also have a teacher apprentice program for those who are interested in becoming music instructors but don’t have fundamental music training. Ng told the Richmond News that the Richmond Music School was established in 1979 when a group of parents wanted some “quality education” for their children. “The school started offering small group music lessons for kids in preschool from the basement of the Trinity Lutheran Church,” said Ng.

Since the pandemic hit, said Ng, the school has moved its classes online. “We are still able to connect with each other during this difficult time, and I’m glad to see our students still interacting with each other in a socially distanced way,”

“People are looking for support during COVID-19 and my song’s message conveys just that for those looking for a good and positive message.”

Reverse Mortgage and Insurance; A Practical Combination? Introduction If you are over the age of 55 years and own your home, you may qualify for a reverse mortgage. Depending on the level of equity you have in your home, a large sum of cash may be made available to you to use as you wish (there is also an option to have regular deposits made for you instead of a lump sum). The limit, as I understand it, is roughly 55% of the equity in your home. Basics The CHIP mortgage TV commercials are shown regularly. The popularity of the reverse mortgage seems, according to recent statistics (and perhaps partly because of the Pandemic), very high. There is no income test needed to qualify for a reverse mortgage. You have only to own your home and have enough equity. There is no monthly repayment, as with a conventional mortgage. The money you receive is, of course, not taxed (no loan money you receive is ever taxed, unless you invest the money and earn income or dividends from it, where that income or dividend is taxed). What I have not seen While no repayment is made under a reverse mortgage, interest in the loan amount is charged by the lender. What I have not yet seen in any TV commercial is that your loan is charged compound interest. So if you take a reverse mortgage, your debt will grow, and as the years go, it will grow faster because of compound interest. You are not required to sell your home because of a reverse mortgage, even if you live long enough that your debt swallows all your equity (or the real estate market suffers a downturn and your equity disappears). Options If you take a reverse mortgage at age 55, life expectancy statistics suggest you will live another 30 years. At such a length of time, it is certainly possible to lose your equity (given compounding), so what happens if, say, you run out of money at age 79? In my opinion, there are some steps you might take at the time you take out the reverse mortgage. In my opinion, it would be useful to meet with an insurance agent. A life insurance policy, purchased at the time you take out the mortgage, will surely assist your surviving family members down the road, with Estate expenses. In addition, under some insurance policies, a portion of the death benefit may be paid out in advance in certain circumstances, which will help if you run out of money. So a visit with an agent could help. Another option is to consider, in my opinion, when receiving your reverse mortgage proceeds, is to invest part of the proceeds in an annuity. Here, the annuity will provide a guaranteed income until you pass. So if you happen to live long enough (hopefully) and you run out of the mortgage funds, you still have the annuity income, along with your CPP and OAS, so that at least you have those sources of income. Conclusions Taking a reverse mortgage is not without risk. However, the risk is, arguably, transferred to the next generation (which is to say, in part, that your children will have potentially a much smaller inheritance). What is, in my view, most important, is that you understand what you are getting yourself into. With a reverse mortgage, the longer you live, the lower may be your equity. I suggest that you meet with your Banker, an insurance agent and perhaps another expert who is not linked with your reverse mortgage lender. Visit our website (www.WillPowerLaw.com) or call us at (604)233-7001 to discuss your Wills, Estates and Seniors’ questions.

Llamas could help in COVID-19 fight ies that can, ideally, treat COVID,” said Lobo.

Antibodies work to bind a virus — such as COVID-19 — and target it towards the immune system, which would then go forth and destroy the virus, said Lobo.

Kirsten Clarke

KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

In this case, the nanobody has the same effect, acting like a socket that plugs into the virus so that it can’t invade the immune system. Its small size means that it’s able to get into areas that the larger antibodies couldn’t reach.

A Richmond biotech company is part of a Canadian coalition researching a type of antibody found in llamas that could be key to developing a COVID-19 treatment. The Canadian Coalition for COVID-19 — which includes Richmond-based SignalChem — has spent months developing and sequencing antibodies taken from the blood of a llama immunized against COVID-19.

“A virus is very simple, if it cannot invade (your cells), it cannot replicate, and that’s it — it’s dead,” said Lobo.

The coalition is now making that data available to researchers around the globe for free in an effort to help accelerate the development of a treatment for the coronavirus. SignalChem was approached by a Vancouver-based biotech company, NovoBind, earlier this year when the pandemic was still at its height in China, about forming the coalition along with other Canadian biotech companies, and launching the project, said SignalChem’s technical project manager Paolo Lobo. Typically, said Lobo, when it comes to research or vaccine and treatment development, there’s a goal of making money or publishing in a high-end journal. “As a result, people end up hiding or protecting their own work until it’s ready, rather than getting it out there for free so the quickest and most efficient progress can happen,” he said. Nanobodies are fragments of antibodies, created by analyzing a genetic sequence, and llamas have been in-

SignalChem is part of a Canadian biotech coalition researching a COVID-19 treatment. Photo submitted creasingly used by researchers for both treatment and vaccine development. SignalChem’s strength is creating proteins, said Lobo, which is the first step in any immunization project. The company created a COVID-19 viral protein — essentially a small portion of the virus, similar to a vaccine — which, in March, was sent to Ontario, where coalition partner Cedarlane injected the sample into Maple the llama (the llama, said Lobo, is fine). Maple then created antibodies against the virus, and Cedarlane took a small blood sample from the llama to send back to B.C. in June, where it was used by Novobind to isolate the antibodies’ genetic sequence in June and July. “With those sequences, people can now make nanobod-

Llamas create antibodies that are quite simple, said Lobo, in comparison to the more complex ones generated by people — imagine, he said, human antibodies as Optimus Prime, while llama antibodies are “just the arm that would punch (the virus).” That means it’s easier, as well as cheaper and more efficient, to mass-create nanobodies from llama antibodies, said Lobo, as opposed to “trying to assemble a full transformer.” The nanobodies are more of a treatment for COVID-19, said Lobo, as they won’t provide a person’s immune system with the information needed to develop its own antibodies against the virus — which is what a vaccine does. The coalition has now released the 51 genetic sequences isolated from the antibodies under an open-source model. Researchers seeking to access them will be required to sign a pledge that, if a treatment is developed, it will be available to, and affordable for, everyone, said Lobo.

Richmond FC ready to roll into scrimmages Sport plan.

Alan Campbell

Parents will only be allowed to drop off and pick up their kids in designated areas, there will be lists of all names and phone numbers of attendees, there will be handsanitizing stations and players will have to wait in designated areas to be escorted onto their practice area by their coach.

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

“This is perfect timing.” That’s how the executive director of Richmond FC, Marius Roevde, described Monday’s announcement by the B.C. government to move to phase three of its Return to Sport Guidelines. As of next month, amateur athletes throughout the province will be able to engage in more organized sport activities and some competitive play in the fall, within a maximum in-club cohort of 50 players. The move allows for limited contact, including scrimmages and practicing within that bubble. “It’s huge for us. We’ve just finished our summer program, where there were a lot of restrictions, with kids in grids, short training times, entrance plans, exit plans, one coach per five players, hand sanitizer stations and screening,” Roevde told the Richmond News on Tuesday. “It created a big challenge for a grassroots club like us, needing extra coaches; it cost us a lot of money and resources. “Finally the kids can start scrimmaging; it’s

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

what we’ve all been waiting for. It makes it a bit more exciting for the players.” Being allowed to play competitive games against other clubs, however, added Roevde, will be totally dependent on how things go in September, both in community sports clubs and in the province’s schools. “If schools become a disaster in September, I don’t see us playing any games, that’s for sure,” he said. “We need the schools to be successful. We have to be careful and clever and do our social distancing, hand sanitizing.”

Suffice to say, Metcalfe’s parents were absolutely thrilled with their son’s first ever MLS start for their beloved Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday, where the Richmond product played the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 loss to Toronto (TFC).

“He’s also only the ninth (Whitecaps) academy graduate to ever get a start, it’s quite rare.

“We spoke to him after the game. He was quite thrilled to be starting and playing the full 90,” Robert told the Richmond News.

“TFC is one of the best teams in the MLS and he was right in there dealing with these guys. He did well considering the level of intensity.” Robert said they knew ahead of time that Patrick would get his first start, but that it was “easier to watch on TV than in person.”

And although it wasn’t the result Metcalfe and the Whitecaps were looking for, his dad, Robert, was over the moon to see his son achieve the milestone.

As they watched on TV, Patrick Metcalfe’s dad kicked every ball from their Steveston living room while his mom closed her eyes because she was so nervous.

The 21-year-old got signed to the first team roster from the ‘Caps academy in January and more than held his own in midfield for the majority of the game against the more experienced and accomplished TFC.

“The challenge will be getting parents out to help with hand sanitizing and check-ins, things like that. But it’s teamwork and everyone has been really good at stepping up.”

Marius Roevde, RFC’s executive director.

Metcalfe makes first MLS start for Whitecaps Alan Campbell

“It’s still going to be very strict and controlled, but we won’t need as many coaches as we did for phase two,” said Roevde.

“We’re very happy about that, it’s not easy to achieve.” Patrick, himself, told WhitecapsFC.com that Friday’s first ever MLS start was a “long time coming” after years of hard work. “I’ve believed in myself and have never given up getting a first team start,” he added. Asked who he would thank the most for helping get there, Patrick said it was hard to pinpoint any one member of staff, but noted that plenty of the veterans in the operation had told him to “take the opportunities when they come as they don’t come around too often.”
