Netflix has worn Raptors poisoned Kudos to council out its welcome for McCallan Park Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

Whoever gave the OK to blackout Garry Point Park with metal fencing and black canvas fence coverings should give their head a shake. For daily walkers, bikers and strollers, it is an offence to the senses. There is more to life than money and movies. I am all for the film industry, but a takeover of the park, at this time especially, is pushing it. The once beautiful walk along the shore line and Scotch Pond is now horrendous. Good grief! I deserve better! You should never mess with nature! The City of Richmond signs say “thank you for your patience.” Well, I have been, patient but now I have had enough. I want my beautiful Garry Point Park back and, besides, who asked me in the first place if I wanted to sell it off to a Netflix production?

Re: “Richmond considering banning use of rat poison,” Online, July 23.

As president of the Garden City Conservation Society, I am disappointed that the poisoning of our wildlife is not being treated as an urgent matter by Richmond City Council. Owls and other raptors (our chemical-free, effective method of pest control) are dying a horrible death. All they want to do is eat a meal. They have no way of knowing that their dinner has been poisoned by anticoagulant rodenticide. People put out poison, not intending to kill an owl or an eagle, but that is exactly what is happening. Councillor Alexa Loo says “It’s just us doing something little in Richmond…” by banning rodenticides. She sug-

gests working with Vancouver Coastal Health and the provincial government on this problem. Taking the ban further is a good idea but delaying what we could do immediately is not. It’s better to take action.

Cities are good agents of change because they can make changes quickly, if a matter is seen as urgent. Our birds dying a painful and unnecessary death is urgent. Raptors eat rodents. They eat lots of rodents. We could start protecting our raptors that live and breed and kill rodents in Richmond, our wildlife family of birds that works for us. That’s who we need the urgent action for. Please, Richmond City Council, do not let more birds die.

Sharon MacGougan RICHMOND

Dear Editor,

Often we find it easier to criticize our elected officials than commending them for some of the sound decisions they make. Take, for example, the McCallan Park/Railway Greenway tucked between Westminster Highway and Granville Avenue. During the past couple of years, the city has done an excellent job in making improvements to this muchused park. Not long ago, the playground equipment was in bad shape and had become a safety hazard. I brought this to Mayor Malcolm Brodie’s attention. Immediately, the old play equipment was removed and replaced with a brand new one.

Now, a large number of children in this neighbourhood enjoy themselves while playing there. A number of park benches placed in the area enable parents and grandparents to enjoy the fresh air and greenery while watching children play. Last year, the city planted a large number of trees throughout the park. The park has now become a major attraction and hub of activity in this neighbourhood. On behalf of my neighbours in this area, I would like to thank Mayor Brodie, the Councillors and the city staff for making McCallan Park so attractive.

Leave lot to City made wrong turn with traffic the bunnies Dear Editor,

I just returned from my usual walk through Steveston Village, and was very disappointed to see that the changes to the traffic pattern for B.C. Day weekend were still in place — several days later! I was under the impression (from an item in July 30th’s Richmond News) that this change was an experiment for the holiday weekend only. However, I have since discovered, to my horror, that it will remain in place until Sept. 7. The arrows painted on the road, as well as the signage, certainly look quite permanent to me.

Dear Editor, Steveston is changing rapidly and nothing could highlight this more than on English Avenue where a plot of land has been left vacant and overgrown for years. The developer has only built one house on it in the last eight years! But a silver lining, the land has become home to at least four bunny rabbits and they are a joy to see. I would like the city to halt development on this land or buy the land and leave it be. Make it a little park for the bunnies and people to help care and feed for them. We already lost the beautiful gardens on the old house behind Super Grocer, so losing this to more generic out-ofthe-box homes would be a missed opportunity.

I can only hope the local merchants (who will be severely impacted by this) were thoroughly briefed and consulted before this drastic change was made. I know for certain that we, as local residents, were not consulted at all, and it has had a huge, negative effect on the way in which we can visit and enjoy the village. As one letter-writer mentioned

Dave Simms RICHMOND

in Aug. 6th’s News, it was so offputting, he just turned around and drove away. Now, how is that for business?

I specifically asked one of the store owners on Moncton what she thought of this traffic change, and she was very explicit, expressing her deep concern and disappointment, and she is not alone. And as for simplifying and easing traffic flow for pedestrians and cyclists, think again, City Hall. You have just made it that much more confusing and frustrating, and I can only think this will lead to more accidents. When can we expect our village to go back to normal? It was working very well before “the powers that be” came up with this idea. They likely don’t live or work in the village, or have tried to do business there recently. Hopefully, this letter will enlighten them.

Dear Editor,

I’d like to salute Tyson Riverdale for so quickly speaking out against the “pedestrian” experiment that’s going on in Steveston right now. I experienced this situation during the week of Aug. 2 on Moncton Street. To begin with, I wasn’t expecting this to exist. I wanted to turn right off a side street but Moncton had become one-way in the other direction, so I had to turn left. I was then confronted by the strangest street arrangement I have ever seen in my 50 years of driving. Moncton was not only one-way, but also one lane, as both curb lanes had been blocked off so pedestrians and bicyclists could move more freely on both sides of the road. Cars were allowed to parallel park against the red cones, leaving only one lane for drivers. I can accept limited closures on Bayview Ave on a statutory holiday but not the main street in Steveston and not in the configuration it is now. Last, but definitely not least, I’m disabled and I need to park close to the merchants I want to visit. Trying to access them in the current setup won’t work for me. I don’t think we were thought of!

Gym at centre of civil forfeiture case Kirsten Clarke KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The large, mixed martial arts studio and fitness centre on No. 5 Road near the south dike is allegedly being run by a moneylaunderer, making it the subject of a civil forfeiture case launched by the provincial government. A notice of civil claim filed by B.C.’s director of civil forfeiture names Paul King Jin as the manager of World Champion Club that operates out of the 31,000-square foot warehouse at 12851 No. 5 Road. The property was assessed last year at $7,708,000, according to BC Assessment. The claim alleges the property is the “proceeds of unlawful activities,” as funds used to purchase or maintain it were acquired through unlawful activities, including money laundering and illegal gaming houses. The gym is operated by a company called Warrior Fighting Dream Ltd., named as one of the defendants in the claim, which

has owned the No. 5 Road property since June 2016. Jin’s wife, Xiaoqi Wei, is the corporate secretary of Warrior Fighting Dream, while Jin’s son, Jesse Xin Jia, is one of the company’s directors, according to the claim. Warrior Fighting Dream financed the purchase of the property in part with various mortgages, according to the court documents. Currently, 1219598 BC Ltd., which is also named as a defendant in the suit and which has a registered office address at 7788 Ackroyd Rd., holds a mortgage against the property. That mortgage was registered Aug. 15, 2019 — one day after the numbered company was incorporated. “The numbered company mortgage is not a legitimate mortgage and was used by the defendants to launder the proceeds of a crime,” read the court documents. And while Jin is named as the “true” owner of Warrior Fighting Dream, the director of civil forfeiture alleges that “Warrior Fighting Dream acted as a nominee owner

or ‘owner of convenience’ on behalf of Mr. Jin with respect to the No. 5 Road property.” The documents allege that Jin has been involved in money-laundering — claims that have been made against him in another civil forfeiture case.

Man’s death not RCMP’s fault: IIO

Richmond RCMP is not at fault for the death of a man who died shortly after he was arrested for shoplifting earlier this year, according to the province’s police watchdog. The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has reviewed evidence of the May 28 incident outside Canadian Tire in Ironwood, including “statements from independent witnesses and several video sources,” which showed the man was already unconscious when police arrived. “Therefore, the (IIO chief civilian director) has determined that there was no connection between the death of the man and the actions or inactions of officers on the scene, and the investigation is now concluded,” reads the IIO statement. The Richmond News previously reported that the police watchdog was notified after a man went into medical distress and died shortly after he was arrested for

Officers placed the man in handcuffs, but quickly determined that he was unresponsive,” reads the IIO statement on the investigation’s findings. “Police immediately commenced CPR and called (BCEHS), who continued lifesaving efforts.” BC Emergency Health Services told the News at the time of the incident that paramedics dispatched to the scene cared for one patient suffering from cardiac arrest, before transporting that person to hospital in serious condition. Crash sends Mountie to hospital A Richmond RCMP officer was taken to hospital after being involved in a collision Aug. 13. At approximately 9:50 p.m., a Richmond RCMP marked vehicle was involved in a two-vehicle collision at Blundell and Garden City roads, said Cpl. Adriana Peralta, spokesperson for Richmond RCMP. The officer driving the vehicle was “re-

The officer was released shortly after arriving at hospital, and the driver of the second vehicle was uninjured. “As the collision is still under investigation no further information will be released at this time,” Peralta said. —Kirsten Clarke/Richmond News

Couple charged in Florida

A Richmond couple is facing trespassing and resisting arrest charges in Florida after driving onto President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property.

The incident happened on March 11, and on March 12, Aaron Mennie and Katherine Poon were charged with the two misdemeanors. Both pleaded not guilty to the charges. Bail was set at $5,000 per charge for both Mennie and Poon. They also had to surrender their travel documents. Steveston-Richmond East MP Kenny Chiu sent a letter to the judge in support

of the couple, saying they are his constituents, they are “good citizens” and they have no criminal record. “It is my understanding this was an innocent mistake made by weary tourists in an unfamiliar area,” Chiu’s letter states, asking the judge to “provide them with all due leniency” in the decision. The charges are “trespass after warning” and “resist officer without violence.” A plea conference is set for Sept. 2. — Maria Rantanen/Richmond News Search Trespassing for full story online at Richmond-News.com

Some Steveston residents are worried a line of trees beside a public walkway near London Landing will obscure the widest view in the region which includes the North Shore Mountains, Howe Sound and Mount Baker. A row of 120 aspens were planted last winter around the property line of 12910 No. 2 Rd., a 27-acre farm near the corner of No. 2 and London roads.

Joel Berman and Marcia Bush want to save a view corridor in Steveston. Maria Rantanen photo unfair to so many people.”

Josh Berman and Marcia Bush, who live in a condo building next to the walkway, say the trees will grow to block out the view of the mountains for residents in the area and those who use the popular walkway.

However, the property is in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) and its regulations state planting trees can’t be prohibited.

“This is something for everyone forever,” Bush said of the view.

Richmond Coun. Harold Steves said there is nothing the city nor the Agricultural Land Commission can do to stop someone from planting trees in the ALR.

They have started a petition “Save Richmond Views,” gathering names to ask the City of Richmond to save the view corridor. “It affects a lot of people because this is a public walkway,” Bush said, pointing out the recently installed picnic tables. “It’s just so

Furthermore, there is no bylaw in Richmond that regulates view corridors.

But, he added, it’s not very “neighbourly” to block the view for the community. “We want tree planting — but no one expected huge hedges,” he said.

Steves pointed out high hedges aren’t just a problem in the ALR. Many property owners in urban areas as well are planting hedges they expect to be three to four feet high, but they end up as high as 30 feet. He’s hoping this will be addressed by council in the future when they look at fencing bylaws. The property has a 9,920-square-foot, ninebedroom house that is still partly under construction The farm’s registered owner is No. 2 Road Farm Ltd., whose address is the Panatch Group. Parents upset at lack of options

Families worry about safety as school restart approaches science,” she said.

Maria Rantanen

A letter was sent to parents on July 31 acknowledging there may be anxiety about returning to school but appealed for “patience as we continue to navigate the latest direction from the provincial government.”

MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Parents are calling on the Richmond School District and Ministry of Education to have remote learning options available for families, masks in schools and greater assurance that it will be safe to send their children to school on Sept. 10.

Richmond School District spokesperson David Sadler said district staff is meeting this week with stakeholder groups after receiving a template on Aug. 11 on how schools will function. They are following timelines set out by the ministry to develop district-specific plans.

B.C. schools will enter “Stage 4” of learning in September, an in-class stage whereby students will be limited to learning groups depending on their age but will be expected to be back in the classroom full-time.

District plan goes public Aug. 26

Parents are scrambling to figure out how to keep their kids safe but also make sure they are educated, said Richmond parent Cindy Cheung, adding she doesn’t understand why the Ministry of Education isn’t offering an alternative to in-class learning.

Cindy Cheung and her son Dexter (foreground), Emi Dyck (left) and Dora Groumoutis want options when school restarts. Maria Rantanen photo students between a rock and a hard place, Dyck said.

Cheung said her children were starting to get used to working with their teachers remotely in the spring and she’d like to see that option available through the fall.

“Our kids are being held hostage,” she added.

“What we had after spring break was starting to work — we were getting used it,” she said.

There is no distance learning for students lower than Grade 10 in the Richmond School District and the only other option offered is homeschooling, something she doesn’t feel she’s qualified to do.

Return to class or home school But the options being offered to parents are limited, said Cheung, whose children attend Walter Lee elementary — either put kids back in school or you’re on your own with home-schooling.

Parents kept out of the loop Dyck said she’s “on the fence” about sending her children back to school in September, and many of her friends are in the same boat, scared to send their kids back during a global pandemic.

“It seems like there’s just their way or the highway — either go to school in that environment we completely don’t feel safe in or you go find your own thing and you pay for it,” Cheung said.

Emails she has sent to the Ministry of Education elicit the “same generic reply.” “Parents are the biggest stakeholders and yet we have the smallest voice,” Dyck said.

Emi Dyck, who has two children at Diefenbaker elementary, thinks there might be a “silent protest” on Sept. 10 with parents not sending their kids back.

Even if children get milder symptoms of COVID-19, there is still the possibility they can bring it home to their parents

The limited choices for education puts

and grandparents, Dyck said. “Why are we taking these risks? We’re in the middle of a pandemic,” Dyck said. More safety protocols needed For Cheung, the back-to-school plan seems to go against health orders — with cohorts of 60 and 120 students and no mandatory masks except in places like hallways and buses. Cheung believes B.C. was able to keep its COVID-19 numbers low partially because schools were shut down to in-class instruction for the most part. If it’s decided online teaching is not effective, then there are other “realistic options” schools can implement, for example, smaller classes, plastic partitions, mandatory masks, but these ideas are not being seriously considered by educators, said Cheung. Other countries who sent kids back to school have implemented things like masks and partitions — it’s not “rocket

“The (school) district can’t rush any of those timelines,” Sadler said. But Vivian Jinn, whose children are at Walter Lee elementary, said the start date is approaching fast and parents have been given very few details on what school will look like. She is worried about students going back on Sept. 10, giving teachers, principals and other staff just two days to learn how the new normal will work. “I don’t know how much can be accomplished in two days,” she said. If parents were given some ideas on how to prepare — rules that will be in place, for example — they could start running them through with their children in anticipation of going back, Jinn said. But the unknown situation is what is causing her anxiety. The superintendent of the Richmond School District, Scott Robinson, declined requests for an interview with the Richmond News.

Parents petition for remote learning 120 to limit their contacts.

Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Parents are petitioning the Richmond School District to offer remote learning this fall in order to keep the COVID-19 pandemic at bay. A petition with 677 signatures of Richmond parents was sent to the superintendent, trustees, the Richmond Teachers’ Association and the Richmond District Parents’ Association saying remote learning is “crucial to bend the curve and keep all Richmond residents safe and healthy.” School is expected to be back in session on Sept. 10. The province announced elementary students will be in “learning groups” of 60 and high school students in groups of

“When the society is not ready to fully reopen, schools are not,” states the petition. “Parents and students should be given the option to continue remote learning at home.” The petition asks for parents to be allowed to choose remote learning for their students, claiming there are long wait-lists for distance learning. It is largely anticipated there will be a second wave of COVID-19 in the fall, and, in fact, numbers have been rising over the past week with 83 new cases announced on Tuesday. As of last week, 113 cases of COVID-19 had been detected in Richmond. Search Parent petition for full story online at Richmond-News.com

Union calls for more safety measures Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The teachers’ union says their biggest concerns — density in classrooms, physical distancing and masks — have not been addressed in the back-to-school plan and they are asking for more remote learning. The sharp rise in COVID-19 cases makes them worry that “the government has not done enough to ensure teachers, students and their families are safe,” BC Teachers’ Federation president Teri Mooring stated in a press release. “B.C. should be pursuing a remote learning model that would allow for inclass and remote learning, especially for medically complex children,” Mooring added. “It’s important that this option maintains students’ connection to their local school.”

This was echoed by Richmond Teachers’ Association president Liz Baverstock, saying small classes aren’t conducive to physical distancing. Those with health problems should be given other options. She said teachers are concerned that, while 60- and120-student cohorts are set up for contact tracing purposes, there needs to be safety within those groups. “Our classrooms are not generally big enough for adequate spacing between students with our class sizes,” Baverstock said. She would also like to see a staged return to classrooms as teachers adjust to a “new regular life” as well as more masks, something she thinks Richmond families are on board with. Family, friends demand justice Alan Campbell ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Gathered outside of Richmond Provincial Court, you’d struggle to believe six years and 14 days had passed since the small crowd had lost a much-loved sister and close friend in a horrific accident. So raw were the emotions etched on the faces of Christy Mahy’s sister and her friends that you could be forgiven for thinking the tragedy happened the day before. They held themselves together, for the most part, as they decided (due to pandemic restrictions) which five of the 12 would get into the court to finally witness the driver accused of causing 36-year-old Mahy’s death face justice. “I’m not sure how I’ll react when I see him in court. I was kind of contemplating whether I want to be here or not because of the emotions,” Mahy’s sister, Joni Mahy, told the Richmond News outside the courthouse, while fighting back the tears.

“Maybe it’s a bit better he’s not physically going to be there.”

feeling. Emotions are still quite raw. It’s been hard.”

travel restrictions were lifted.

Joni’s last remark was in reference to the accused, Erjon Kashari, only appearing in court on Thursday via video link for a bail hearing, two days after he was extradited from his native Albania.

Of the fact Kashari was able to leave Canada in the aftermath of the accident, Joni, along with her family and Christy’s friends, still have questions.

His bail hearing last week was to be continued as he still had to attain a lawyer. He now has a lawyer and his bail hearing is set for Sept. 4.

“He stayed at the scene, there were witnesses, he was here on a work permit. It doesn’t make sense,” she added.

Christy’s father, Ron, has fought long and hard to get answers from the authorities and ultimately bring the driver accused of causing his daughter’s death back to Canada to face the charges.

Kashari was in Canada on a work permit at the time his Pontiac SUV plowed into Mahy as she stood at the intersection of Russ Baker Way and the Dinsmore Bridge. Despite there being witnesses to the accident and Kashari remaining at the scene, he was able to leave the country and was only charged, in his absence, five years later with criminal negligence causing the death of Mahy. “My dad called me (on Tuesday) to say ‘he’s here.’ That was quite shocking; it was a lot faster than we had expected, given the length of time we’ve had to wait for this,” said Joni. “We’re all quite emotional and are kind of unsure how to feel. It’s not like a happy

One of Christy’s friends, Brandie Mol, said she felt some “relief” Kashari was brought back to face the charge. “(This) could be the beginning of some closure for everyone,” said Mol.

Supporters held posters outside Richmond courthouse before the accused in the Christy Mayh case was to make an appearance. Alan Campbell photo

Kashari was arrested last year in Albania and was reportedly being held in custody there until COVID-related

He told the News last month that “in six years I haven’t given it up. I couldn’t.”

Determined to not let his daughter’s story be forgotten, Ron, a Harley Davidson rider, has organized a motorcycle ride from Richmond in Christy’s name every year since 2015.

Heritage building renovated Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

What’s inside may be old and used, but the store itself has a brand new look. Richmond Hospital Healthcare Auxiliary Thrift Store, at the corner of Chatham Street and Second Avenue, reopened to the public on Aug. 15 after almost six months of renovation.

However, Saturday’s opening came with restrictions to prevent the spread of the COVID-19.

“It will look exactly the same as it did in 1894 when the building is finished from the outside,” said Van Duin.

“People have to mask up and use hand sanitizers. There will be arrows on the floors to keep everyone moving in the right direction,” said Van Duin prior to the opening.

Funding for the restoration comes from a variety of sources, including Sunday sales and donations from the local community, explained Van Duin, noting that the City of Richmond also gave the auxiliary $150,000 towards the building’s interior renovation.

“Most of our volunteers working there are 65 and older, we have to be extremely careful and follow all the rules to make it as safe as possible for all volunteers.”

The thrift shop run by the auxiliary helps raise money for health-care services in Richmond.

Built in 1894, the heritage building has become a symbol for the Steveston community.

Its home is a 123-year-old building, originally a church, which the auxiliary took over more than two years ago.

But the charming old building was falling apart due to lack of care. Now that the interior renovation work has been done, the auxiliary is looking to update the exterior, however that will have to wait until the coffers have been replenished.

“We have levelled the building, put in a new floor, updated the electrical and plumbing. (We’ve also) put in a new bathroom, painted the inside and so on,” said Ursula Van Duin, president of the auxiliary.

Meanwhile, the thrift store itself helps fund Richmond Hospital, as well as local nursing homes. “We are buying equipment and supporting different health-care programs for the hospital, such as setting up a dental clinic for the elderly and providing music therapy programs,” said Van Duin. “The sole purpose is to make a difference in the patient’s life.” The store is back to its regular hours of Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday noon to 3 p.m.

Family cheers on local emergency workers

Living just down the street from West Richmond Ambulance Station 269, the Leung sisters, Quinn, 7 and Ella, 6, call out “good luck, paramedics!” at home whenever they hear the sirens going down their street. They know paramedics are responding to medical emergencies and it’s particularly challenging during a pandemic. The Leung family, including parents Angela and Lester, took part in the 7 p.m. cheer in front of the station for three months. The parents wanted to do something as a family to show support for those working on the frontline. “We wanted to teach the girls how we could contribute in this very challenging time,” said Angela. The message they wanted to send the paramedics was “we’re here for you because we know you’re

White supremacist has change of heart Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Former white supremacist Tony McAleer joined Richmond Rotary Club members last week via an online video conference to inspire more people to express compassion and forgiveness at this challenging time. The weekly Zoom meeting hosted by Richmond Rotary Club usually lasts thirty minutes, but last week’s discussion was longer than an hour as group members were deeply touched hearing McAleer’s journey and kept asking him questions, said Jimmy Yan, the event organizer. “Racism is unfair and makes people ill,” said Yan, adding that McAleer was invited as a guest speaker given the rising number of hate crimes against the Asian community across B.C. lately in light of anxiety about COVID-19.

As co-founder of Life After Hate, a not-forprofit aimed to help people leave violent far-right groups to lead compassionate lives, McAleer, also wrote a book The Cure for Hate about his life. Born into an affluent family in Vancouver, a number of events in McAleer’s life led him to join some of the most notorious neo-Nazi groups in Canada and the United States. After spending 15 years with the White Aryan Resistance movement in Vancouver, fatherhood was the turning point that set him on another course heading in the exact opposite direction — towards love and compassion.. The meeting sparked discussions about having understanding and empathy for others – including those whose views we find abhorrent. Search White Supremacist for full story at Richmond-News.com

Arts Awards: A better artist than baker Valerie Leung

VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Richmond artist Rotem Levy almost forgot about the cookies in her oven when she received a call about her winning the Youth Richmond Arts Award. “I was very surprised and overjoyed because I was nominated last year and thought it wasn’t going to happen this year (due to) COVID and everything,” said Levy, adding that her cookies turned out pretty good and doubled as a celebratory snack. “Even though the person who contacted me said to not tell anybody, I had to tell my mom … and she gave me a quick thumbs up during her work.” The 19-year-old told the Richmond News that she was doubtful about applying for the award at first. However, with some encouragement from a

youth mentor with the Richmond Youth Media program and a “bit of courage” she applied for the award in 2019. Levy’s art journey began in Israel and in Hong Kong prior to moving to Canada in 2008. Her move to Richmond, said Levy, exposed her to even more types of art than what she experienced overseas. “When I entered into my first year at Emily Carr, there was a heavy focus on Indigenous art and I was pleasantly surprised because those types of art have not been addressed a lot.” She added that she enjoyed it even more when the school “pushed” her out of her comfort zone. Being exposed to different types of art, added Levy, let her find her path as an artist, which has led her to working in different industries such as Foundry Richmond — a mental health therapy hub for youth. “I’ve gotten great opportunities and I’m thankful for them.”

Architect’s urban sketching book celebrates Richmond landscape KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

“The book includes urban sketching’s historical context, current trends and its concept,” said Larano, who has also hosted local workshops and several sketching demonstrations in Richmond. The book also covers basic artist tools, covers drawing techniques

An awarding-winning Richmond filmmaker’s latest work has been selected for a national film grant worth $150,000.

“Part of the film was to capture a piece of Richmond. The story is mainly about a spoiled kid who realizes how much…he could contribute to the community. I hope the audiences (will) feel inspired to give back as well,” said Lam, adding that he is now polishing the script. Shooting will start in the fall.

A Richmond artist has published a book to help others take pencil to paper and capture the beauty of Richmond’s natural and urban landscape.

Some Richmond scenes featured in the book include houses on stilts at Finn Slough, the Winch Camp storage building near the London Landing pier at No. 2 Road, Steveston’s Fisherman’s Wharf and the YVR terminal building.

Film captures ‘piece of Richmond’ As the only filmmaker selected from Richmond, Lawrence Le Lam, who grew up in the city, said he feels grateful to be able to give back to the community through his work.

Kirsten Clarke

Joe Larano, Jr., who has lived in Richmond since 1998 and is also an architect, said his book — titled Urban Sketching: Capturing the Views Around Us — is meant to be both an education and reference resource on urban sketching.

Rotem Levy won this year’s Youth Richmond Arts Awards. Submitted photo

In the five-minute video, titled The Chinatown Diner, which Lam submitted to the Telefilm Talent to Watch Program, he features a kid named Richard Meng, who is running away from his crazy rich father in China to the City of Richmond.

Joe Larano’s sketch of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, which is featured in his new book on urban sketching. and styles, and also features “several international urban sketchers and contributors with notable drawing styles to appreciate and emulate.” Urban sketching is a movement first started by Urban Sketchers, an international non-profit organization that aims to foster a global community of artists. Larano said urban sketching is “rapidly growing internationally because of today’s social media

revolution. “The book is relevant as it encourages urban sketching as everybody’s game. It serves as a reference aid to regular sketchers and especially to beginners who will greatly recognize its relevance in today’s society.” Urban Sketching is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, as well as other major online bookstores and websites.

With a keen determination to live on his own, Meng starts working as a dishwasher at a restaurant, which is filled with rap music and dance at night. Meng later decides to help preserve the restaurant when it appears it, along with the entire neighourhood, is going to be demolished to make way for a new development. “My film is mostly set in Richmond and Vancouver’s Chinatown to explore the uniquely local topic within the Chinese diaspora through the underground Chinese rap scene. The film touches upon the housing crisis, the conflict between new and old Chinese immigrants,” said Lam. Growing up in Richmond, Lam said every corner of the city carries his childhood memories and now he aims to capture those familiar scenes in his film. The film will also include some recent hot topics, such as billions of dollars laundered through British Columbia’s real estate market. —Nono Shen/Richmond News Search filmmaker for full story at Richmond-News.com

A song for Kory Nagata fund he was always good at, but was too shy and scared to express himself through.

Valerie Leung

VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

When Richmond recording artist Cole James releases his latest song, his best friend’s late brother will be very much top of mind.

“Growing up I was super focused on sports, but I would still do music stuff at home … but I wasn’t a fan of sharing anything about it,” said James.

James is hoping his latest track will support Kory Nagata’s family charity in the same way they supported him in his music career.

“It wasn’t until in my early 20s that I wanted to put myself out there because I knew I would regret it if I didn’t.”

James, a Steveston-London alumnus, is fundraising for the Kory Nagata Memorial Fund, which supports underprivileged youth athletes in B.C.

While James is using his new song as a way to help raise money to help underprivileged youths, he hopes the song can bring some positivity to those in the community during COVID-19.

Nagata recently lost his life on the Fraser River after trying to retrieve a football that had fallen into the water near the Pacific Gateway Hotel. James, who has always been close to Nagata’s brother, Henry Lin, wanted to help, especially during the difficult time of COVID-19. He told the Richmond News that for every pre-save of his new song “You’re Mine,” $1 will be donated to the fund.

Cole James Submitted photo “Henry and Kory have both been super supportive of my music since the beginning, said James. “I thought it would be a good opportunity to relate something that I’m working at and raise funds for something (the Nagata) family is doing.” Music, said James, was something

“It’s not the best time of year for everyone because of COVID and it’s just nice to have something light-hearted to raise awareness for something negative and to turn that into something positive like donating money.” James’ new song was released on Aug. 18 on all streaming platforms including YouTube, Soundcloud, Spotify and Apple Music.

Artist confronts societal norms via music Tackling societal norms through music is what one Richmond resident is doing to push through the challenging times of COVID-19. Amanda Sum, 22, found music to always “be there for her” during tough times and she is using it to uplift others in similar situations as herself. Sum, who has been attending theatre auditions for the past five years, found herself unable to escape from societal norms.

She would seek out auditions explicitly asking for “Asian women” or only applying for grants that are for “artists in under-represented communities.”

“I don’t need (people) to feel sorry for me; I don’t need them to lift me up and empower me. I just want others to be there to take it in just as I would for others in day-to-day life.”

“I simply want to ask people to listen and be aware of (societal norms) because I find that as a young, unassuming Asian woman, a lot of the times people don’t listen,” said Sum, adding that is why her debut song touches on themes of conformity and confrontation.

Sum’s debut single, Groupthink, will be released on Sept. 4 on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp and iTunes.

Fraser sockeye run ‘devastating’ Kirsten Clarke KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

This year’s Fraser River sockeye run is forecast to be at an all-time low — something that will have a “big time” impact on the availability of south coast salmon in Steveston. “The south coast… It’s devastating. There will be no sockeye fishery, there will be no pink fishery, and right now the fall chum fishery is a question mark,” said Dane Chauvel, CEO of Richmond-Based Organic Ocean, which operates its own boats and works with B.C. fishers to deliver seafood directly to consumers across the country.

Dane Chauvel, CEO of Richmond-based Organic Ocean, pictured during his recent fishing trip up north. Submitted photo

“We operate an environment down there when we have south coast fisheries. We have vibrant sales to the public in places like False Creek and Steveston. This year, you’re not going to see nearly as much of that,” added Chauvel. In its weekly reports on the fishery, the Pacific Salmon Commission has

outlined this year’s dearth of Fraser River sockeye, forecasting an in-season run of just 283,000. That’s less than a third of the preseason forecast of 941,000 fish. The report states that just over 4,000 sockeye have been caught this year — the majority by test fisheries. In addition, the high water levels seen on the river earlier this summer, as well as the Big Bar landslide north of Lillooet, are making for a challenging migration for sockeye and chinook. Chauvel spoke to the Richmond News from B.C.’s north coast — having just finished a fishing trip in the Hecate Strait — where the salmon fishery is “not great,” but better than the “devastating” season the south coast is experiencing. That means that there will still be salmon available for sale — just from other B.C. fisheries. As the north coast fisheries close, fishers will bring their catch to Van-

Businesses struggle to pay the rent The most pressing issue the Richmond Chamber of Commerce is hearing about from its members during the pandemic is being able to pay their rent. A recent survey of chamber members showed 70 per cent of respondents didn’t take advantage of the federal rent subsidy program — those renting commercial space are dependent on their landlords to apply for the subsidy. “That’s the number one problem we’re hearing from our members — they’re months behind on their rent and their landlords are not taking part in this program,” said Matt Pitcairn, CEO of the Richmond Cham-

ber of Commerce. The BC Chamber of Commerce recently released the results of the province-wide survey, and Richmond’s chamber president explained the local results to the Richmond Community COVID-19 Task Force in late July. Seventy-nine per cent of businesses in Richmond and Delta that responded to the survey said they had seen a decrease in sales volumes due to the COVID-19 pandemic — only two per cent said there had been no impact. Furthermore, 47 per cent said there were increased operating costs to doing business and 51 per cent reported laying off workers.

Fully Cooked Chicken Wings

907 g/2 lb Choose from 10 varieties of juicy, crowd-pleasing wings.

There were 57 businesses from Richmond and Delta that responded to the survey. Pitcairn said businesses are watching the situation closely for a possible return of restrictions. “Businesses are struggling to get back on their feet and, unfortunately, with cases rising, we could see further restrictions coming, which could limit their ability to get back on their feet,” he told the task force. When asked what would help, respondents cited reducing taxes, fees and payroll/wages. —Maria Rantanen/Richmond News

couver to sell, said Chauvel. “So there will be fish available, but it’s probably not going to happen in any abundance for maybe another month. And even after that, it’s going to be comparatively limited.” With “too many boats chasing too few fish,” Chauvel said he would like to see the federal government reduce the size of fishing fleet, so that it’s proportional to the amount of fish that can be harvested. Most efforts to manage salmon stock, he said, have been focused on reducing the amount fishers can harvest, something that targets the commercial fishing, but also impacts the recreational industry and First Nations. There could also be steps taken to improve the salmon’s environment, for example, making the in-river migration path more hospitable.

mean hard ice-cream — not soft serve,” said Hsu, adding that they wanted a place that was more local, not a franchise store.

Jenny Hsu, co-owner of J Square Ice Cream, said the idea of opening their first ice-cream shop started from a “big” problem — ice-cream cravings.

J Squared Ice Cream, which should open sometime in August, will feature flavours such as jasmine green tea, roasted milk tea, London fog and other classic teas.

Hearing loss not to be feared with caring, professional help at hand ver notice thaat peoplle often seeem to mumbble or not pronounce their words clearly? Do you miss out on conversations while in a group of people?

Or is the TV volume always too low to fully enjoy your favourite program?

Those may all be signs you are experiencing hearing loss.

Thankfully, the trained, helpful and friendly staff at Expert Hearing Solutions in Blundell Centre can help with what, for many, can be an embarrassing or even frightening subject they’d prefer to avoid. “I have quite a few customers whose family members have come in to talk about the hearing problems of their loved one - a parent or spouse - who are reluctant or even scared to come in,” says Lily Liu, a Registered Hearing Instrument Practitioner at the Blundell location, one of 18 Expert Hearing Solutions across B.C. “We can make them feel secure that hearing loss is a normal, age-related condition, and not soomeething to be embarrassed by or feared.” Oftten, innitial hearing losss can be mischharacteerizedd as someone else’s probblem m - they arre nott speakking louud ennouggh or areen’t pronounciing wordds cleearly. “Whenn theyy miiss a connversatioon, thinnk som meonne is muumbling, or haave

The staffff at Expert Heariing Soluttions can hellp remedy those problems and enhance their customers’ lives with the assistance today’s hightech hearing aids can provide. And it can all start with a simple hearing test at the sttore. “They can come in for a screening and simply talk, ask questions and meet with me to discuss their personaal siituation,” Liu says. “It doesnn’t hurt to find out what can be doone to make things better for them.” Consultations are freee of charge and can also include a no-obligatiion, free trial of the latest, Bluetooth-enabled, hearing aid technology to help customers experience the difference they can make in their lives. Often, it’s a significaant and emotional revelation. “Everyone’s reactioon is different,” Liu says. “Some feel sad. For otthers, they know they haave hearing loss and their visit is to confirm itt. “O Others leaave witth a big smile and are happy their lives have changed for the betteer. “Whatever thee situation, we aree here to care and help withh whatever a customer is gooing through.” Forr more aboout Exxpert Hearing Solutions, visit their websitee at experthhearingsoluutions.com.

Helping out has been the work to refresh the store’s inventory off eyewear.

Part of the changes now inncludes a new protocool that requirees customers to scheduule their appointmennt.

“Basically, we had a lot of inventory stocked away in drawers that we can now display properly,” Houng says. “Plus, we increased the invenntory to offer even more selection, so our customers can find whaat suits thhem best..”
