Re: “Olympic medallist’s sister pushing for Richmond recognition,” News, July 23.

Dear Editor, Re: “Rabbit owner warns of off-leash dog ‘attack’ at Richmond park,” News, July 30.

Great article and I learned so much about (Harry Jerome’s) connection to Richmond.

Sadly, loose dogs are often allowed (and even encouraged) by their owners to chase the abandoned pet rabbits that inhabit so many areas in Richmond.

We all see his statue in Stanley Park.

I also did not know about the racism they (he and Valerie) experienced but sadly that still goes on.

Our resources are being overwhelmed by the number of injured rabbit calls coming into our rescue, many because of dogs.

I totally agree with his sister about some acknowledgement of this Canadian sports hero. Wow — a bronze in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Bylaw and cruelty officers should be responding to complaints and the leashing bylaws enforced.

Then he lived in Richmond and taught our kids.

These owners are well aware of what they’re doing. They don’t need education, they need consequences.

Definitely, Richmond must recognize this Canadian and local hero.

Most people looking to spend money on services or goods choose ahead of time to do so, and they go to a specific location with the intent of buying from a specific merchant.

As humans we will want to drive right to, or as close as possible, to our desired destination.

We will choose to circle the neighbourhood again and again to find a spot close to where we want to shop or eat. It’s just the way we are.

Temperature checks mandatory at YVR Nono Shen

Domestic and international passengers will be required to have their temperature checked before leaving Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Transport Canada is requiring the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority to conduct temperature screening at all security checkpoints. This is being implemented at four major Canadian airports: YVR, Calgary International, Toronto Pearson and Montreal-Trudeau International.

All passengers and employees will have their temperature checked before going through the luggage screening, said Roby McVicker, vice-president of YVR operations and maintenance.

Passengers and employees whose temperature is 38 degrees Celsius or higher

will be directed to a seating area and then will undergo a second temperature reading 10 minutes later. If they don’t pass the second reading, they won’t be allowed through security nor onto a flight.

The mandatory temperature checks are in addition to health screening questions and face coverings, previously made mandatory for all passengers.

YVR began temperature screening for employees earlier this month with the launch of its TAKEcare program, a health and safety campaign designed to help travellers move safely through the airport during COVID-19.

The program has put in place a number of health and safety protocols at the airport, including requiring masks in the terminal, mandating social-distancing and only allowing valid flight ticket holders and employees to enter the airport.

A 39-year-old Richmond man is facing charges after allegedly luring and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl from Winnipeg while visiting that city last year.

Radouene Bentroudi has been charged with: luring a person under 16; sexual assault; sexual interference and obtaining sexual services from a person under 18.

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) allege Bentroudi “picked up an underage girl on the street” and allegedly paid for sex, while in Winnipeg in

June 2019.

The very next day, Bentroudi allegedly went to the 13-year-old girl’s home, where her guardian was made aware of the incident, according to the WPS. He then allegedly made a fake Facebook account and attempted to connect with the victim.

Through an investigation, police claim the account was created by Bentroudi, which prompted a Canadawide warrant for his arrest.

On July 22, WPS arrived in Richmond and arrested Bentroudi at his home with the help of the Richmond RCMP. Bentroudi has been released on an order with conditions.

The Richmond Assessment Centre (RAC) is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturdays and statutory holidays from 9 a.m. to noon. The testing site is closed on Sundays.

There were four new cases of COVID-19 detected in Richmond last week, bringing the total number to 101.

The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) released the latest numbers last Thursday afternoon.

Those coming to the RAC don’t need a referral or appointment and will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

The province overall has seen an uptick in cases since it moved into Phase 3 of the pandemic with more businesses re-opening.

Testing is recommended for anyone with cold, influenza or COVID-19-like symptoms, even if symptoms are mild.

On Tuesday, the province reported 146 people had tested positive for COVID-19 over the previous four days, bringing the provincial total to 3,787.

While the criteria for testing expanded recently, not everyone needs a test, according to Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).

The City of Richmond has posted signs saying it will remove basketball hoops from city courts if physical distancing rules aren’t adhered to.

Despite reminders from city staff, organized games of basketball in groups larger than permitted continue to take place, explained city spokesperson Clay Adams.

The maximum number of players allowed at any one time is four.

The signs warn users that “Not complying with the court usage rules and playing games will result in hoops being removed.”

The signs appeared at courts at King George-Cambie, Thompson, South Arm and Heather-Dolphin last week, but Adams said the most problematic court is at South Arm Community Centre.

Money businesses under scrutiny laundering.

Richmond city council is asking the province to regulate Money Service Businesses (MSBs), such as currency exchanges and money transfers, to help combat money laundering and organized crime.

The province is seeking public feedback regarding a possible regulatory regime for MSBs following several government and media reports about how organized crime uses them to launder money. (The deadline for feedback has passed but the province is accepting Richmond’s feedback due to “extraordinary circumstances” created by the current pandemic.)

In 2019, there were 66 entities operating 75 MSBs in Richmond — that is, eight per cent of all registered MSBs in Canada were located in Richmond.

Many MSBs are post office outlets, cheque-cashing and payday loan businesses or foreign exchange businesses.

However, because of ineffective regulation, highlighted in a report by Peter German, MSBs can be exploited for money

FINTRAC — the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada — monitors and inspects MSBs and can enact punitive action when necessary.

The City of Richmond can issue tickets to MSBs if they are running a business without the correct business licence.

Peter German’s report from 2019 “Dirty Money” criticizes FINTRAC’s effectiveness, saying it is “wrapped up in a legal framework that resembles a straitjacket” with the result being “its effectiveness is blunted.”

In a discussion about the city staff report on MSBs, Coun. Carol Day pointed out the report notes how MSBs have been “spectacularly exploited by money laundering and organized crime.”

“It is just shocking that it has gone unchecked for so long,” Day said.

Nearly 13,000 travellers have been denied entry to Canada from the U.S. since border restrictions were put in place in March.

Between March 22 and July 22, a total of 12,997 foreign nationals were not allowed to enter Canada, as their travel was deemed non-essential, according to data requested by the Richmond News from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Of that figure, 11,321 were U.S. citizens.

However, more than half of the U.S. citizens in question were refused entry for reasons unspecified by the CBSA. Many of those denied entry were travelling by land, rail or marine transport, although some were arriving to Canada via air.

The remaining 1,676 travellers denied entry at the border were citizens of other countries who were coming via the U.S. Meanwhile, another 277 travellers arriving in Canada directly from other foreign countries were denied as they

“did not meet the respective standards of entry,” according to CBSA. A spokesperson for CBSA said the agency was not able to provide provincial or regional data.

Tougher stance on ‘Alaska loophole’ The agency announced last week it is now cracking down on the so-called “Alaska loophole,” through which Americans are reportedly entering Canada under the guise of travelling to Alaska, in order to visit and vacation in B.C. The new rules kicked in at 12:01 a.m.

Under the new rules, in-transit foreign nationals can only enter the country through five designated border crossings in Western Canada.

These crossings are Abbotsford-Huntington, Kingsgate and Osoyoos, all in B.C., as well as Coutts in Alberta and North Portal in Saskatchewan.

Richmond has lost one of its Elders — Cree Elder and Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) veteran Rosalyn Ing passed away July 23.

Her husband, George Ing, also an RCAF veteran, said Rosalyn is “sorely missed” and will be remembered for mentoring First Nations youth to pursue higher education, particularly in the medical field.

“She inspired a lot of students to go to university to do masters and PhDs,” he said. “She set an example for First Nations (but) she did it the hard way.”

Rosalyn was born in The Pas, Man., in 1938 and was an Elder of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

She only had a Grade 10 education

After a three-year service as a fighter control operator in the RCAF and raising her two sons, Greg and Ted, Rosalyn went back to school at the age of 48, completing her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees.

Her master’s and doctoral work focused on inter-generational trauma caused by residential schools and she was one of the first people to study the long-term effects of residential schools and abuse experienced by Indigenous people.

Rosalyn leaves behind her husband George, her son Ted and his husband Sascha and two granddaughters, Nimkish and Aisha.

Ex-food bank client returns favour Kirsten Clarke

Having relied on the food bank when he was a new young father, Chris Dinnell leapt at the opportunity to help the Richmond Food Bank during COVID-19.

“It was something that we had do to, but later on down the road, when I became more secure, I always wanted to somehow give back to the food bank, however it was,” he told the Richmond News.

Dinnell is one of 11 volunteer drivers, coordinated through the COVID-19 Richmond Coming Together Facebook group, helping the food bank with home deliveries. Two food bank volunteers also run deliveries.

“I’ve been doing about six or seven (deliveries) a week, sometimes 10,” said Dinnell, a realtor at Dinnell Realty Group.

there to drop off the food. It warms my heart…it’s amazing. I absolutely love it,” he said, adding that it’s been “amazing” to see the way the Richmond community has come together during COVID-19.

While Richmond Food Bank’s home delivery program has been around since before the pandemic, it’s “quadrupled” in size, said executive director Hajira Hussein, going from 20 to 25 a week to 79.

At 19, as a new father without enough money, Dinnell’s family relied on the food bank each week.

“At that time, it was embarrassing.

I don’t think I told anybody, but now, I wanted to share my story and want people to know that it’s not embarrassing,” he said.

“People go through struggles, and it may be a struggle right now but things won’t always be this way.”

As such, Gustavsp boasts a unique suite of teaching aids, including a host of YouTube videos which break the game down to the absolute base level, from what to wear on the course to etiquette while playing.

A chance meeting in a Richmond park just about sums up Shayain Gustavsp and the passion which courses through her veins on a daily basis.

While plugged into a podcast and doing her morning stretches in Talmey Neighbourhood Park, close to Cambie and No. 4 roads, 33-year-old Gustavsp was approached by a relative stranger, a senior lady whom she’s spotted a few times previous in the vicinity.

“I would see this older lady with her two grandkids, doing squats and stuff. I thought, ‘when I’m her age, I would love to be like that,’” said Gustavsp.

“I would watch her every morning, not knowing she was watching me and trying to see what I was doing. One day, she got the courage to come up to me and say, ‘this is a new one today,’ referring to my stretches.

“So we started walking and talking and she told me she was an immigrant from the Philippines; she was a nurse; she has three daughters here and then she told me it was her dream to learn to play golf.”

Up to that point in the conversation, Gustavsp hadn’t mentioned she was also an LPGA certified golfing coach, divulging only to her new friend Aurora that she ran her own premium experience curation business for VIP clientele.

“I asked her, ‘why golf?’ as it was such a random sport to name,” explained Richmond-based coach Gustavsp, who does most of her teaching from her garage, via a driving net, and at Mylora Golf Course on Sidaway Road.

“She said (golf is) in nature and in the Philippines, it’s seen as a rich person’s sport. Then I told her I teach golf and I offered to teach her for free.

“She stopped and said she didn’t believe me; she asked if I was making it up. She asked if I was an angel.”

She’s also trying to reach corporate women, many of whom she feels are likely missing out on that four to five-hour bonding that takes place on the golf course between prospective business partners.

Photo (below) by Alan Campbell The very next week, Aurora came along by herself to Gustavsp’s women’s golfing clinic, which was by donation, with proceeds going to Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre.

“She was like a sponge and wanted to learn everything,” Gustavsp continued.

tavsp’s priorities lie when it comes to her relatively new business venture as a golf coach of two years.

Her primary target is the absolute beginner, someone who has never been invited onto the golf course or feels too intimated to try.

That focus has seen her gravitate towards women, people of colour and minorities, for whom the sport of golf has all manner of visible and non-visible barriers to overcome.

“She loved it so much she now brings one of her daughters every Wednesday.

They’ve never held clubs before and want to come back every week. Her daughters take her to the driving range now.

“Aurora voluntarily pays now for the lessons, as do her family members. She’s amazing. On Instagram I do a wisdom Wednesday anecdote from Aurora.”

“The sport has this energy about it. And if you’re a woman or a person of colour, you feel this extra pressure,” said Gustavsp, who is of Pakistani and Persian heritage and still experiences prejudice, despite being fully certified and a BC Golf board member.

“I’ve been taking clients out to play golf for 10 years,” said Gustavsp, referring to her time spent working for the likes of Orlando Magic in the NBA and Arsenal FC in the English Premier League, where she entertained “billionaire clients” on the course.

“You meet people on the golf course, it’s a bonding and connection time. You get to understand a person without any barriers.

“I’ve taken CEOs out to play golf in Spain; they ran massive soccer clubs. I have eight hours with them; I drive there, drive back, four to five hours on the course. I needed their business, they needed mine.

“You don’t have to be that good at playing. Many of the people I played with weren’t that good either.

“My goal is to encourage more women and to give them the confidence to realize golf is a safe space for all.

“Women seem to think they need to be like a 10 handicap to get out there. So they won’t even try it. I only charge $40 for a half-hour lesson at Mylora.

“Mylora has been great with me. They have lots of women’s tournaments there.

I’ve approached six other courses in Richmond, but they all said no.”

Gustavsp believes there’s “so much opportunity in this industry,” but there are still “way too many barriers and intimidation that I’m trying to break down.

“This is a passion project for me. I love doing this every day.”

as of July 16, 189 people died as a result of the virus in B.c. – 123 or more of them seniors in multiple assisted living or long-term care facilities. the system deals with a range of seniors – those needing assisted living to those who can no longer look after themselves due to physical or perhaps mental and dementia issues. a key issue, the canadian centre for Policy alternatives (ccPa) said in a June report, has been increasing government reliance on the private sector to deliver seniors’ care. there’s significant red tape to negotiate, training issues, now-pend i ng u n ion izations and the threat of pending legal actions that could hamstring the system. victoria has moved on some issues, through visitation rules, staffing changes and addressing personal protective equipment concerns (PPe). researcher andrew longhurst divides care into assisted living and long-term. the former is preventative care aimed at delaying entrance to long-term. if that’s handled, reliance on the latter is less, he said. But, he added, there’s a shortage of publicly funded long-term care. severe staffing and training problems exist across the board and B.c.’s system needs a thorough review, he said. also in June, the royal society of canada said “profound, longstanding deficiencies in the longterm care sector” contributing to the pandemic’s magnitude, far worse in canadian facilities nursing homes than in comparable countries. “the pandemic just exposed long-standing, wide-spread and pervasive deficiencies,” the rsc said.

Financing of care some critics charge B.c. has moved to far with the private sector handling seniors’ care. “this financialization of seniors’ care – in which the real estate assets associated with this care are treated as financial commodities to be bought and sold on international markets – is at odds with the basic social purpose of providing care to vulnerable seniors, many of whom have low or moderate incomes,” a February ccPa report said. “it is the failure of provincial governments to invest in new public and non-profit-owned assisted living units that has contributed to the shortfall in publicly subsidized spaces.” the ccPa wants changes starting with increased funding for non-profit organizations and health authorities to increase publicly subsidized assisted living unit capacity. second, it wants to see detailed disclosure and public of reporting of ownership, costs and quality of services to enhance accountability and transparency.

Hauptman isn’t so sure. she said governments know what they spend and receive detailed financial reports from private operators at regular intervals.

Financial model misinformation is frustrating, she said. “the private sector has invested in new facilities, we have mortgages, some organizations fundraise for equipment and quality of life programs for our residents,” Hauptman said. “We can only spend the funding that we receive from government, and it is much more apparent now that we have been underfunded for an appreciably long time.”

For the rsc, though, it’s less about who runs or funds facilities than it is about staffing,

data, a lack of standards and a lack of seniors’ voices in the conversation. the rsc makes 16 recommendations for change, foremost of which are that funding must be adequate and sustained, with Ottawa leading the way. and, the rsc said, quality and end of life care are non-negotiable.

Regulation at the legal heart of providing services to seniors sit the Hospital act, the community care and assisted living act and the assisted living regulation. the rsc called provincial and territorial laws “disparate and piecemeal.”

Buried in the fine print is the general health and hygiene section saying facilities must make a plan describing the procedures to be followed to promote general health and hygiene amongst residents and prevent the spread of infectious disease in the assisted living residence. the accompanying handbook specifically addresses this.

Despite those requirements, provincial medical health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry on June 29 had

to stress that facilities “must have required written safety plans.” the rsc goes further.

“Prov incia l a nd territorial governments must assess the mechanisms of infection spread from multi-site work practices and implement a robust tracking system,” it said. “When the cOviD-19 outbreak occurred, nursing homes lacked capacity to handle the surge.”

Further, it said, data collected must include resident quality of care and life, resident and family experiences, and quality of work life for staff. and, the collection should be independent of the sector and government.

B.c.’s Office of the Ombudsperson said “the problem with having two different legislative frameworks is that different standards, fees, and monitoring and enforcement processes apply to each, and neither seniors nor their families are generally aware of which legislation governs their facility. this creates unnecessary disparities in the care provided to seniors in residential care.”

Facilities also found themselves subject to inspections not by provincial government inspectors

has failed B.C. families, critics say has contributed to “profound” problems with system, report finds but by health authority officials with results posted online. “neither of these steps offers a long-term solution that provides seniors and their families with the confidence that consistent standards will apply no matter where in the province they receive residential care,” the ombudsman said. inspections, though, won’t solve all issues. the Office of the seniors advocate of B.c. tracks inspections and complaints. However, complaints or past disease outbreaks don’t necessarily correlate with a cOviD-19 outbreak, as is evidenced by the lynn valley care centre, which saw 20 deaths but few past problems.

Hauptman said, “there are inspections, quality reviews, investigations, financial reporting requirements, Worksafe requirements, accreditation, and food services licensing requirements. “this is due to the nature of our business, providing 24-hour care for the most frail in our population,” she said. “there are differences in the types of regulations. it would likely not have any measurable benefit to try to streamline these.” the ombudsperson has twice studied the situation – in 2012 and again in 2019. the second study found the government had not implemented multiple recommendations.

For i n sta nce, t he ombuds p erson s u g ge s te d a l l B .c. health care assistants (Hcs) be required to register with the Bc care aide (Hca) and community Health Worker registry. But, only those working in publicly funded facilities were required to do so. the same applies to criminal record checks. “this leaves a significant gap in protection for seniors,” the office

said. the rsc said hands-on care is now almost entirely given by unregulated workers – care aides and personal support workers receiving the lowest wages in the healthcare sector with minimal training. “they often have insufficient time to complete essential care and are at high risk for burnout and injury,” the rsc said.

Workforce change, the rsc said is key. it wants national standards and workforce benefits. also lacking in many cases are physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapists and technicians; recreational opportunities and access to uninsured medical services.

Legal action Further compounding problems for future care of seniors is the looming threat of class action lawsuits from families of those who have died. they’ve already

begun in Ontario and lawyer Darryl singer of Diamond & Diamond firm said he’s had multiple inquiries about similar actions in B.c. the law firm is behind a $120 million class action case filed in Ontario aimed at several private sector operators, some of which also operate in B.c., singer said.

He said the situation is a prime example of private health care. “this is a perfect example of why we don’t want to do this,” he said, saying private care can lead to cases of maximizing profits through lowering staffing levels. “the cost of contingency planning and the cost of having adequate staff are all things that can eat away at profit,” singer said. “they knew or ought to have known if they failed to take these steps it was reasonable to foresee that people were going to get sick and die,” singer said.

What homes should be doing now is getting ready for a second and third wave, singer said.

another threat, singer said, is if the class action succeeds, it’s insurance companies that would pay out. that could lead to insurance companies refusing to insure such facilities in future, he explained. it’s not the first cOviD-related legal action in Ontario. the Ontario nurses association got an april judge’s order that companies provide staff with masks and also to separate staff and clients to prevent disease spread. the need for such was to be determined by health professionals and not companies, the judge said.

However, the PPe shortage has been a global issue for the health care sector, one the rss said provinces need to handle.

“We are just starting to have more supplies in the supply chain and things have eased substantially,” Hauptman said. “in March and april, there was very limited supplies in canada and it created challenges across the sector.

Once the federal government announced that shipments had arrived and were being sent out to the provinces, the situation improved dramatically.”

University of Windsor Faculty of law class action clinic director Jasminka Kalajdzic said companies not being sued will be looking for the court’s decision so they can be proactive in providing care. “if private market actors can’t do business in a way that is effective and safe and does harm to customers, they shouldn’t be in the market.”

But, would that leave a scarcity of seniors’ homes if some withdraw from the market?

Kalajdzic doesn’t think so. “it would open up space for other compa nies,” she sa id. “that’s capitalism.”

But, she said, the situation

certainly indicates a need for dis cussion about the role of the stat in regulation of homes.

PPe scarcity has also manifeste itself in B.c. in the amount o 2020 cOviD-19 sickness claim to WorksafeBc. some 337 of total 533 were pandemic-relat ed by June 1, 82 of those comin from long-term or seniors’ car workers. it’s a situation tha removes workers from the job placing greater stresses on thos remaining in the workplace. in the end, the rsc said, “re form and redesign must tackle no just the pandemic crisis, but als long-standing systemic failures “to fail in doing this leaves u with our currently woefully in adequate [long-term care] system and the certainty that the nex crisis will create similar or mor catastrophic outcomes.” • jhainsworth@glaciermedia. c @jhainsw

Support pioneer awarded Order of B.C.

A Richmond resident is one of 13 people being bestowed with the honour of the Order of British Columbia.

Shashi Assanand is a pioneer in founding the Vancouver and Lower Mainland Multicultural Family Support Service Society (VLMFSS), which provides support to immi-

grant, refugee and visible-minority women and children facing domestic violence.

Her work provides free and confidential services to victims and survivors who don’t have access to transition houses and other supports due to barriers such as language and gaps in Canada’s legal system.

Assanand said she was “surprised,” but “honoured” to have been chosen for the prestigious accolade.

“There are no words to describe how I feel except that I’m truly honoured to have been nominated and chosen.”

“I was so thrilled when I received the call about being a recipient of the Order of B.C.,” said Assanand, adding that “for a minute (she) didn’t believe it.”

Search & rescue unit in need of help itself A Richmond-based volunteer search and rescue organization is finding itself in a tough spot after COVID-19 forced the cancellation of fundraising events across the Lower Mainland.

Royal Canadian Marine Search

and Rescue (RCMSAR) Station 10 had to cancel what would have been its sixth annual fundraiser, which was set to be held in May at Britannia Heritage Shipyards.

“That’s our big push to fundraise every year… It usually generates

about $25,000 dollars plus,” said station leader Aaron Harnden.

The organization also typically receives some donations through its participation in community events in Richmond and New

Westminster — which have also been cancelled this year.

“So far this year, we’ve had zero donations made and no fundraising,” said Harnden.

While the station receives funding from BC Gaming Grants and

the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), it’s only enough to operate at a “bare minimum stance,” he said.

Meningitis is inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding your brain and spinal cord. Most cases of meningitis are caused by viruses, and some are caused by bacteria. However, injuries, cancer, certain drugs or other types of infections can also cause meningitis.

Among the different types of meningitis, acute bacterial meningitis is the most serious. The onset can be quick and without prompt treatment, it can be life threatening. Even with adequate antibiotic treatment, survivors can develop serious complications including brain damage, hearing loss, or learning disabilities. Bacterial meningitis can be caused by many different types of bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitides, Haemophilus influenzae type B and vaccines are available to target many of them.

The bacteria that cause meningitis are transmitted person to person through droplets in coughs and sneezes or through saliva. Some people are carriers where they have the bacteria, but do not develop symptoms. Vaccination is the most effective way to protect against bacterial meningitis. Vaccination against H. influenzae b, pneumococcal, and meningococcal bacteria are given to infants and children in BC as part of the standard immunization. Those who were not immunized in childhood and those at risk of meningococcal infection (eg. people lacking a spleen or with decreased immunity, people living in group settings such as military, college students living in dormitories, or travellers going to meningitis belt of sub-Saharan Africa) should consider additional vaccination. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist today to get more information.

Hi Stan, It’s a valid concern.Any time you shut off and re-start large plumbing lines there can be issues.

One thing that often happens is the moving of sediment.

When line is un-pressurized and then re-pressurized, dirt and corrosion can be dislodged and redirected down the main. The end result of this can be a plugged up PRV, (Pressure Reducing Valve), in your home. The PRV is a very important component of your home’s plumbing system and it’s something that you want to take care of.

Burnett grad authors COVID culture book out her childhood as a Canadian-born Chinese, covering topics such as the environment, education, food and entertainment.

“I want to show that I’m both a Chinese and a Canadian person, and I’m proud to be a perfect balance of both.”

Maggie Xiong, a graduate of Burnett secondary, wanted to push back against the onslaught of criticism regarding Chinese customs that COVID-19 seemed to unleash.

The result is her self-published book about growing up in Canada, while also respecting her family’s heritage.

Her book, Trekking the Pacific: The Cornerstone of Two Cultures, examines Chinese and Canadian cultures using personal stories, old photographs, journal entries and reflective pieces Xiong wrote through-

Richmond resident Dawn Lo found drawing to be a great pastime in her home city of Hong Kong.

Maggie Xiong told Xiong the Richmond News the book also grew out of a feeling of “helplessness” during the COVID crisis when she could do nothing to help family that live in her parent’s home village in the Hubei province of China.

“I want people to understand how important and unique their own culture and different backgrounds are,” said Xiong, adding that many people can easily “forget where their family grew up and the traditions and customs that come along with it.”

That is, until she immigrated to Canada and found her passion in communicating about diversity through art. In 2006, as a young girl moving to a new country, Lo began taking classes that helped create her own style.

Her personal growth in art became a reflection of her experiences growing up in a new environment.

Art became an outlet for Lo to open up conversations around diversity and motivated her to pursue a career in illustration after graduating from Emily Carr.

Because of her attachment to drawing as a child, Lo often searches for opportunities to work in areas related to children’s art and to connect with kids.

Her artwork is inspired by her mixedculture experiences and the goal of opening up conversations around diversity and what it’s like to be AsianCanadian.

She mostly uses gouache — a mix of acrylic and water colour paint — as well as a mixture of gouache and graphite in her pieces.

Lo has contributed to the city’s art scene, particularly with the re-branding of the Richmond Children’s Arts Festival, publishing children’s books and a recently completing a mural at Thompson Community Centre.

Sockeyes’ boss hoping for rule relaxation

With less than two months to the “tentative” start date for the Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL) season, Richmond Sockeyes’ new head coach is watching Dr. Bonnie Henry’s daily news conferences with a keener eye than most.

Since he took over in May, Bayne Koen — fresh from various coaching roles in Port Moody and Prince George and now full-time with the Delta Hockey Academy — has been seriously limited in what he can do with his roster on the ice.

With pandemic restrictions only allowing him to work in small groups, Koen is hoping the rules get relaxed enough for him to create more realistic game-type scenarios ahead of the first puck dropping Sept. 29.

The league announced last week a 44game regular season schedule, with each team playing a single interlock game against the opposing Bayne Koen conference as well as two games at the 2021 PJHL Winter Classic Showcase, scheduled for Jan 1-3, 2021, at Minoru Arena in Richmond.

“We’ve been skating since mid-June, all small group stuff, very limited. We’re at 18 people max out on the ice right now, two groups,” said Koen, who started his coaching career with the Sockeyes back in the early 2000s as assistant to Ron Johnson.

“I’m hoping in the next couple of weeks things can open up a bit more. I would love to have more open play and work on systems and special plays; but it’s a challenge for everybody.”

“It’s a case of guessing what the next step will be and getting ready for it if you can. We have to be able to adapt on the fly at any time.”

Koen said he was more than happy to return to the Sockeyes, a program that he’s very familiar with and a dressing

“I can see the care factor is there; that goes a long way. A lot of these young men have grown up together,” said Koen.

“I want to bring my experience and knowledge to the guys. I think I’m a players’ coach; if I demand certain things, I’d like to see them from the players.

“I know what the Sockeyes mean to the community and I’m excited about getting back into the program and helping to build the team.

“We’ve got to put the right players in the right situations. I’ve been lucky enough to win it four times in this league and that’s something I can fall back on and make sure the players are always prepared.”

Community sports in B.C. to get $1.5M lifeline With doubt still surrounding the re-opening of youth sports this fall, the B.C. government has offered $1.5 million to help community clubs stay afloat.

The province has more than 4,100 local sports organiza-

tions and the pandemic has led to many of them facing financial challenges due to the absence of registration fees, event revenues and sponsorships.

However, most of those orga-

nizations still have fixed costs, such as rent and staffing, to deal with.

“Many amateur sport clubs in British Columbia are volunteer based and rely on membership fees, events, tournaments and

competitions to fund sport activities in their communities,” said Charlene Krepiakevich, CEO, viaSport.

Without support for local organizations that allows them to stay established in their com-

munities, people would have reduced access to sport.

This access, according to the government, could take up to two years to rebuild.

ING, Dr. Rosalyn 26 August 1938 - 23 July 2020 Dr. N. Rosalyn Ing died from stroke on 23 July 2020 in the Vancouver General Hospital. She had her loving husband and two granddaughters by her side.

An Elder of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation in Northern Manitoba, Dr. Ing will be remembered for her life-long work for social justice, her significant contributions to excellence in education for Indigenous people in Canada, and for her enduring love for family and friends. She was born in The Pas, Manitoba to Elizabeth Jane and John Young, a former Chief who instilled the value of education in all 16 of his children.

Before moving into an educational career, Dr. Ing served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Fighter Control Operator between 1957-1960 where she met her husband George. After a brief courtship, they married in 1960, and Rosalyn left the Air Force to focus on her young family.

After lovingly raising her two sons Greg and Ted, she returned to higher education at the age of 48. At the University of British Columbia (UBC), she earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1988; a Master of Education degree in Administration/Leadership in 1990; and a PhD in Educational Studies in 2001. A survivor of the Canadian Residential School System herself, her master’s and doctoral research focused on the intergenerational trauma Indigenous people experienced at the Indian residential schools. This research was among the first to examine the long-term effects of this colonial education and various types of abuse experienced by Indigenous people. She continued to be a part of the push first for acknowledgement and then for reconciliation for this dark period in Canada’s history and its ongoing effects, and played a supportive part in many of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Sharing Circles across Canada.

Rosalyn firmly believed in encouraging Indigenous people to strengthen ourselves and our communities through education. She taught for several years at the Native Education College in Vancouver before moving to UBC as Coordinator of the First Nations Health Careers in 1994, where she remained until she retired in 2003. At UBC, Dr. Ing worked with academic units in the health professions to increase the numbers of Indigenous students through summer high school youth programs. By educating faculty and staff about Indigenous historical issues she ensured they became more respectful and responsive to the needs and interests of Indigenous students and their communities. The learning opportunities she created for Indigenous students and the relationships she nurtured with many BC Indigenous communities and organisations meant that their perspectives became central to university decision-making. As a result of Dr. Ing’s efforts, many Indigenous people have enrolled in and have completed careers in the health field, and she proudly made a point to attend the graduation ceremony for every student that she helped through these programmes.

As a Cree Elder, she took it as her sacred duty to mentor and inspire many young people throughout her life, empowering them first to understand and then to achieve their potential. After retirement, she volunteered as a community member and Elder on various educational committees for K-12 and post-secondary education; to mentor numerous Indigenous undergraduate and graduate students; and to challenge societal inequity and racism. In 2012, Dr. Ing received the Queen’s Jubilee Diamond medal for her exemplary work in Indigenous education and community contributions.

Family was always priority in Rosalyn’s life. She was the Matriarch of her extended family, full of kindness and compassion, and readily welcomed many into her family circle. Earlier this year, Roz and George celebrated 60 happy years of marriage. Roz had an infectious passion for life: she loved learning, reading, art, music, and travelling, and looked forward to sharing her adventures with those close to her, always sending around photos and descriptions of her frequent travel with George. She took great pride in the achievements of her sons Greg and Ted, and those of Ted’s husband Sascha. Her granddaughters Nimkish and Aisha were her joy, and she looked forward to amazing futures for both of them.

Rosalyn led by example. She lived a life full of grace, compassion and love, and she will be missed dearly by all who knew her. Dr. N. Rosalyn Ing is survived by her husband George, son Ted, Sascha, two granddaughters Nimkish and Aisha, three brothers and five sisters, and many nieces and nephews.

Rosalyn was cremated on 28, July 2020. A memorial service will be held when possible.
