Steveston not Why praise Hitler? Bell use basic biking etiquette worth a stop Dear Editor,

Re: “‘Sanitized’ history one sided,” Letters, July 23

Dear Editor, On Sunday my wife and I took a ride through Steveston, which we have been enjoying for shopping, socializing and restaurants since the 1960s. When we saw the sidewalks crowded with people, 90 per cent of them not wearing masks or bothering with distancing and many of them with small children, we drove through without stopping. I assume these are people who think that either Dr. Bonnie Henry is an alarmist, or that they are somehow immune to the COVID-19 virus.

Oh, and did I mention the two cycists and the motorist who rode and drove through stop signs on Moncton Street forcing us to made sudden stops so we didn’t run them over, and one of them giving us the finger because we said something to him? Apparently the pandemic has had no effect in changing some people’s egocentric attitudes and propensity for rude behaviour.

Maybe come the fall we will be able to get back to enjoying the friendly (and safe) village that we have loved for so long.

Dear Editor,

I have been a biker all my long life, it’s a great form of transportation and an enjoyable way to experience the hidden places around us.

I’m happy to see the increase in the use of bikes since March, however I’m not impressed by the lack of etiquette that many riders use. Maybe they’ve never been told or maybe they choose not to employ biking etiquette, but as a senior I’ve experienced some close calls.

Please, bikers, use your bell — and if you don’t have one, get one to indicate that you’re coming up from behind. Or at least say, ”on your left.”

Also, please slow down where there are pedestrians — otherwise ride on the road.

As we age, our reactions are slower and our hearing diminishes and we can be easily startled by a silent rider whizzing by.

Parents, please reinforce these few suggestions to your family so that we can all remain safe.

Delivering News builds life skills Dear Editor,

So, the pandemic happened and our 13-year-old son came home from school during the last week of in-class sessions saying that he would like to become a Richmond News carrier. Since he learned that we were tightening the purse strings at home, he thought it would be a good idea to start making a little money of his own. With sports programs on hold and on-line class instruction starting, it was also a great reason to get outside for some regular exercise.

Anyway, we whole-heartedly agreed. Now, every Thursday, he has a system of prep work and delivery. He separates the bundles, folds papers with elastic bands, loads up his wagon and with his clipboard in hand, gets out there and delivers papers on two routes. As a family, we have discussed the inclusion of his paper routes into a new fall school and sports routine which will help him develop crucial time-management skills.

I don’t know about you, but with the overwhelmingly dire world news out there right now, we really look forward to reading our local community newspaper more than ever.

By encouraging your kids to take on a paper route, you are not only supporting your local newspaper by increasing its distribution, but you are giving your kids the baseline opportunity to build valuable skills to grow into mature, responsible contributing young members of society.

Railway flowers not for picking, mopeds stay off Dear Editor, I have enjoyed the greenway along Railway Avenue since it was built. However, I would like to bring to your attention two observations regarding what is happening now and urge the city to post signs regarding the following.

In the last two weeks, I have seen mopeds on one occasion and a larger motorcycle driving down the walkway a week later when I do believe these vehicles belong on the street!

Secondly, the city plants wild flowers for all to enjoy, but some people have decided those flowers are not for our viewing but rather to be picked for their own enjoyment.

I would like you to pass this on to city officials or post it so that people correct their behaviour.

Wrong time to demolish homes Dear Editor, One hundred and thirty families live in rental buildings at Minoru Gardens. Some have lived here for more than 20 years.

I am writing to you because I am concerned about the upcoming permit application for demolition of our homes.

Is it safe to ask families to move during a pandemic? We will have four months when 70 families in each building will be expected to use one elevator — despite reports of people contracting COVID-19 through elevator buttons.

It will also be difficult to physically distance.

Our neighbours who are not moving, may also be at risk since there is limited parking space for several large moving vans between the buildings.

I truly hope the city does not provide the permit for the demolition of our homes during the pandemic.

A man has been arrested and charged with carrying out two violent robberies in Richmond that involved tasering and pepper spray.

The first took place at around 11:40 p.m. on Friday, July 6 when police were called to a business in the 6000 block of Blundell Road, after a woman was discovered lying on the ground.

She told Mounties that she had been robbed and alleged that during the course of the robbery, the male suspect had tasered her multiple times.

The victim also stated she believed a female suspect was involved, as the victim heard her talking to the man who attacked her.

During the robbery, the victim sustained significant injuries requiring hospitalization.

Police called in a dog team to search the area, but the suspects had already fled.

Richmond RCMP’s Property Crime Unit traced and arrested a male suspect this week.

The next day, at around 12:30 p.m., police were called to a second robbery, this time in the 7700 block of Firbridge Way.

Karim Vellani has now been charged with a string of offences, including robbery, assault, possession of a non-firearm, theft, driving while disqualified and dangerous driving.

The victim alleged she was peppersprayed by a male who then forcefully took her purse while in the parkade of her residence.

As with the first robbery, the victim stated there were two suspects involved, a male and female.

She said while she struggled with the male, a blue BMW pulled up and a female got out. This female then allegedly grabbed the victim and pulled off her sweater.

The victim, however, managed to escape and run off, at which point the two suspects departed in the vehicle.

The victim sustained minor injuries.

After an investigation, officers from

“These were brazen attacks that neither victim could foresee. Both of them were simply doing things they had done countless times before and never expected they would be violently accosted,” said Insp. Michael Cohee, Officer-In-Charge of Investigative Support Services.

“I know if this was my mother I would want her to be able to walk freely in her neighbourhood without fear. The public in Richmond deserve to feel safe and our officers have worked diligently to identify and secure criminal charges against the suspect.”

Fire crews were on the scene of a suspected electrical fire at a condo complex on No. 1 Road near Francis Road Tuesday afternoon.

The Richmond News understands from residents at the Apple Greene Park complex — opposite Seafair Shopping Centre – that firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, entered the second floor of the three-storey building around 3:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire has not been confirmed and a firerescue spokesperson said there were no injuries.

Three injured in crash September return for most students Nono Shen

Schools are scheduled to reopen on Sept. 8 and students will be organized into “learning groups” of 60 in elementary schools and 120 in secondary schools.

Three people were taken to hospital after an accident on Saturday involving a vehicle crashing into the front door of a Richmond Chinese restaurant.

Photos posted on WeChat show a silver vehicle embedded in the front entrance of Double Double Restaurant at 4600 No. 3 Rd. As seen in the images, smashed glass covered the hood of the car and restaurant floor, and the door was forced out of its frame.

A spokesperson for BC Emergency Health Services told the Richmond News that three patients were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the spokesperson, they received a call at 11:43 a.m. and dispatched two paramedic crews to the scene.

The restaurant also updated its Facebook page saying that they have installed a temporary replacement door and the restaurant is still operating as usual.

Richmond parent Karina Reid, whose children attend Homma elementary, said it was a “relief” to hear about the plan.

“Having students in a cohort gives me a little bit more peace of mind,” Reid said.

She is planning to study fulltime herself in September and knowing her kids will be in school will make that possible without having to drop any classes, she added.

They also apologized for what happened Saturday morning and said they appreciate the support they have received from the customers.

‘Fist fight’ should be probed, says resident Valerie Leung

A Richmond resident has requested that an investigation following a “fist fight” between himself and an off-duty Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer be re-opened.

The fight was the culmination of an on-going “cat versus dog altercation” between two Richmond residents, explained Cpl. Ian Henderson, spokesperson with the Richmond RCMP.

Richmond RCMP had responded to a call made by one of the men involved, who identified himself as an off-duty CBSA officer.

“Initially, both parties admitted to losing (their) cool, and neither party wanted further action by police,” said Henderson.

However, on Friday, Nathan Lau, who is one of the parties involved, reached out to the investigator in charge of the case to re-open the file, according to Richmond RCMP.

According to a Facebook post by Lau’s girlfriend, Isabel Chuong, Lau and the CBSA officer have had several encounters in the past, but they were mostly verbal disputes.

On the day of the fight, Lau was “minding his own business” in an underground garage of a townhome when the off-duty officer followed and recorded him.

When Lau tried to do the same and record him at a closer distance, the officer “immediately rushed out (of his car) and sucker-punched him “and put him in a chokehold.”

Lau’s friend, who was there at the time, tried to intervene, but was told by the officer to “stand back as he was an officer.”

Lau is now suffering with an infraorbital fracture, concussion and is having trouble sleeping.

In her Facebook post, Chuong expressed her “disgust” at the officer using his “position of power to intimidate others.”

“As a peace officer, his duty should be to protect the public, not assault them,” she said.

“In addition, shouting gross and stereotypical racist insults is embarrassing and an incredibly poor representation of the men and women who dedicate their time working for the CBSA.” CBSA told the News there is an on-going “thorough investigation” of the officer’s conduct.

“Any employee who breaches CBSA’s strict code of ethics and behaviour will face disciplinary action,” said Ashley Lemire, a spokesperson with CBSA. “This matter involves a single CBSA officer and is not representative of the integrity and professionalism of thousands of CBSA employees who carry out their duties in an exemplary manner.”

A temporary homeless shelter, located in central Richmond in what will eventually become a new arts and cultural centre, has been extended to the end of March.

Adams said.

The former Minoru Place Activity Centre has been sheltering around 20 to 25 people per night after it was converted into an Emergency Response Centre (ERC) in mid-May and the original plan was for it to continue to the end of August.

The shelter is funded by BC Housing and is being run by Turning Point Recovery Society, with the city is providing the space for the ERC, while Vancouver Coastal Health is responsible for health-related services and referrals.

The plans to renovate the building into an arts and cultural centre have been put on hold as it was deemed the ERC meets a current need, explained city spokesperson Clay Adams. The city will try to accommodate the arts community in other facilities if they need the space, he added, but given the current pandemic, there isn’t much opportunity or ability to hold classes or have other arts-related programming.

The extension to the end of March is in anticipation of another wave of COVID-19 in the fall and winter.

Anyone at the ERC with COVID-19 symptoms is tested and sent to hotel rooms or the hospital while waiting for test results.

Part of the agreement for the ERC is that there will be no drug use on site or around the facility, and no drug consumption room.

Former councillors Warning issued for receive lump sums hot hand sanitizer to 2018. Dang served on Richmond council from 1996 to 2018.

Two former Richmond councillors received lump sum payouts in 2019 after not being re-elected in the October 2018 municipal election.

Former councillor Derek Dang received $110,205, while Ken Johnston received $75,230, according to a city staff report listing 2019 council salaries. A note states the lump sums were “due at the termination of service.”

The lump sum payments are based on years of service and equivalent pension contributions, according to city spokesperson Clay Adams, as council members aren’t eligible for the Municipal Pension Plan.

Johnston served on Richmond council from 1993 to 2001 and again from 2008

The city staff report also listed salaries for Richmond’s mayor and councillors.

There was a $10,000 discrepancy in the salaries of those who didn’t take an extra salary adjustment in January 2019 to compensate for the loss of a federal tax exemption.

Couns. Kelly Greene and Chak Au waived the pay increase in 2019, and therefore their base salary was $69,539 while other councillors received $79,037.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie received a base salary in 2019 of $174,314 with $27,990 in benefits. The salary of the mayor of Vancouver was $174,258 in 2019 with an additional supplement of just over $3,000.

The total amount paid in salaries to Richmond council in 2019 was $787,614 with $33,694 in expenses.

Richmond Fire-Rescue is warning the public to be careful with that relatively new addition to their vehicles — hand sanitizer.

Since the pandemic struck in the spring, most people have armed themselves with a ready supply of the disinfectant in their cars.

But what they may not realize, explained the fire department, is summer temperatures and the heat inside vehicles leads to the risk of alcohol-based sanitizers leaking.

The top payout reported by the City of Richmond in 2019 was to the estate of the city’s late general manager of engineering and deputy chief administrative officer (CAO), Robert Gonzalez, at $620,336.

Municipalities — and other public bodies — have to compile an annual SOFI report that includes compensation of all employees earning more than $75,000.

Richmond resident David Gurney is all smiles and little wonder — his bank balance has just gotten $100,000 heavier.

A Richmond teacher went into education to fight for equity and bring Indigenous culture and knowledge into the classroom.

After 25 years of pursuing this goal, Lynn Wainwright was recognized as the 2020 alumni teacher of the year by the UBC Faculty of Education.

Wainwright, whose mother and sister were residential school survivors, said her goal as an educator is to create a more equitable system for everyone.

“Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing, being and doing are beneficial for all students,” she said. “If we want to have systemic change and a more equitable education system, it is important to include that diversity and perspective.”

Seniors’ care in B.C.: systemic failures glacier media special report |

or families with the frailest of seniors in long-term care, the cracks in the system that led to a crisis when coVId-19 hit were not a big surprise.

The virus brought problems into the open, but they had been there all along.

For may mikhail’s 94-year-old mother Isabelle mikhail, it started with falls. Isabelle had been in north Vancouver’s Lynn Valley care centre a couple of months when she fell in 2014. Another fall soon after sent her to hospital with a massive bruise on her face.

Previously, Isabelle had used a walker.

“And after that, she never really managed the walker again. so she was in a wheelchair, but she continued to fall,” said mikhail. “she fell numerous times off the toilet.

I gave really strict instructions: ‘Please do not leave my mom unattended on the toilet because she will try to get off.’

“They said ‘yes, yes, we will make very sure.’”

But Isabelle continued to regularly fall off the toilet onto the floor. s u c h i n c i d e n t s a r e n’ t a n anomaly.

For many years, long-term care has been under-resourced, understaffed and largely hidden from public view, say experts.

“It’s unfortunate it took a pandemic to really wake us up to what we’ve been talking about for the past few decades,” said Habib chaudhury, professor and chair of simon Fraser University’s department of Gerontology. dr. Roger wong, a clinical professor in the division of Geriatric medicine at the University of British columbia (UBc), agrees.

“I th i n k what it has done is

really revealed some of the systemic issues,” he said.

There are 294 long-term care centres in B.c. with roughly 27,000 publicly-subsidized beds – not counting about 8,747 assisted living and over 19,248 unregulated independent living homes for seniors or those which are strictly privately paid. The average age of residents in long-term care is 85 and over 30% are dependent on staff for basic activities like bathing and getting out of bed. Almost 65% of residents have some form of dementia and 30% have severe cognitive impairment.

Until it affects a family directly, however, long-term care for seniors tends to be out of sight and out of mind.

And while most experts recommend that residents receive over four hours of direct care a day, care homes in B.c. continue to fall below that. o ne p erson who h a s b e en sounding the alarm for years is B.c.’s seniors Advocate Isobel mackenzie.

The ministry of Health sets 3.36 hours of care a day as guideline for how much care residents should receive. But mackenzie found 70% of long-term care homes in the province fail to meet that. For contracted facilities the percentage not meeting guidelines rises to 82%.

Perhaps that’s not surprising.

As mackenzie noted in her 2019 report on long-term care homes “currently, facilities are funded at levels that may not meet this guideline.” contracts covering block funding between care homes and health authorities are complex.

represents private care home operators in the province. “The consistent message from the care home sector to the government is the funding is too low to run many of these care homes sustainably.”

Under those circumstances, pressure to find ways to be eff icient w it h l abou r costs is inevitable.

“If you ask why, that’s a million-dollar question,” said chaudhury. “It’s a value question.... we’ve done a very poor job in long term care.”

In the case of mikhail’s elderly mother, caregivers encouraged her to use a diaper rather than a bathroom – describing it as a ‘toilet in her pants’ – not because she was incapable, because they didn’t have time to help her, said her daughter.

“There’s never enough care aides to stay with them long enough,” said Kelly shellard,

whose 82-year-old dad, Bill shellard, has dementia and is also in care at Lynn Valley care centre.

“These are people who try really hard to do their best. It’s a really hard job. But it’s an impossible job when there are not enough bodies physically to do it.”

Today’s long-term care system was first developed in the 1960s.

But unlike other government health care services, long-term care was never put in the canada Health Act, meaning there are no national standards.

That’s why long-term care can be very different in different provinces.

In earlier decades, there was also a more tiered approach to seniors’ care in B.c., say experts.

Residents in long-term care home were “much more diverse in terms of their needs,” said jennifer Baumbusch, a registered nurse and professor at UBc’s

school of nursing, who specializes in residential care.

About 20 years ago, however, that shifted. People being placed into long-term care “had to be fairly complex and dependent to qualify.” critics have maintained the move artificially reduced – temporarily – the need for long-term care, while forcing seniors into cheaper assisted living beds.

But while the needs of those in long-term care increased, staffing levels didn’t, said Baumbusch. many physical buildings that had been constructed for a more capable population of seniors were also now providing homes for increasingly frail residents.

“If you go to any care home you’ll see long hallways,” where it’s easy for dementia patients to get lost, and dining rooms on main floors that residents have to be brought down to, said chaudhury.

That only adds to the difficulties of providing care.

The other major change that happened in the early 2000s was a move to increased privatization and contracting out of long-term care for seniors – in part because contracting those services was cheaper for government than building and operating new care homes directly.

left facilities unprepared for pandemic has suffered chronic shortfalls of resources and staff, experts say The result was a decreased share of care homes owned and operated by health authorities directly and an increase in those owned and operated by the for-profit sector. Today, roughly one-third of long-term care homes in B.c. are operated by health authorities, one-third are run by non-profits, and one third are run by the private sector.

Increasingly, for-profit care homes that used to be family-run businesses are operated by corporate chains that own multiple care facilities. jennifer whiteside, secretary business manager of the Hospital employees Union that represents care aides at unionized care homes, characterizes the early 2000s as “a real deregulation of our long-term care system. I think there was a real perspective on the part of health authorities that long-term care operators were businesses. And the operating model wasn’t really the concern of the health authorities.... I don’t think there were enough checks and balances in the system.”

To avoid higher labour costs, operators of nu rsi ng homes stopped hiring employees directly and instead contracted those services through third-party companies. “we have many, many examples of contract flipping over the years,” said whiteside, pointing to Inglewood care Home in west Vancouver as a prime example, where the previous owner of that facility “contracted out [with different companies] six times in 10 or 12 years,” she said.

Klassen said care home operators were forced by the government to contract out their labour costs as funding was squeezed.

“The only way [many care homes] could actually operate and not be constantly in the red was to try

to address some of the costs of labour.”

The upshot was many care aides, who are responsible for about 67% of direct care and previously earned a standard provincial wage of up to $25 an hour with benefits, found their wages repeatedly cut – to as little as $17 an hour in some cases. According to Bc care Providers, the average starting salary for a care aide in B.c. is $19 an hour. care aides frequently needed several jobs in different care homes to make ends meet.

The consequence, said whiteside, is that it made working in care homes “very unattractive to people.”

“It tends to be a precarious workforce,” said whiteside. most workers are women and many are from vulnerable communities. some are temporary foreign workers recruited to work in jobs other health care workers have rejected.

over $10 million a month the province has been paying since the spring to ensure all care aides work at a single facility – while being paid a higher wage. care homes receive block funding that is negotiated individually with health authorities to subsidize the costs of publicly funded care beds.

Health authorities specify the number of direct care hours care homes are expected to deliver. contracted long-term care homes cost taxpayers almost $1.3 billion a year in B.c. But as mackenzie pointed out this year in her report, A Billion Reasons to Care, there is inadequate transparency on exactly where that money goes and how much of it is spent on direct care. staff who work in this environment are under pressure to provide care as efficiently as possible.

“They’re given a certain amount of time to do a certain task,” said A lthea Gibb-carsley, mikhail’s partner. “And as people’s

cognition changes, it’s very seldom enough. And it often is grossly inadequate…. They’re pushed, pushed, pushed, in relation to that task list.”

Theoretically, she said, every resident has a care plan driven by their unique needs. “And theoretically, each of the staff who comes in to take care of the residents is acquainted with that care plan.”

The reality is often different.

“It’s feed, clothe, clean,” said mikhail. If you’re lucky. everything else falls by the wayside.

“To put it crudely we’re warehousing seniors,” said chaudhury.

The idea that someone could sleep in late or go for a walk in the garden has been replaced by the need to make sure “they are fed, they are clean, they are calm,” he said.

According to mackenzie, 25% of long-term care residents are given antipsychotic medication without a diagnosis of psychosis and twice as many residents take anti-depressants as those with a diagnosis of depression. “we use psychotropic medications to help people calm down and stay put,” said chaudhury.

Putting a parent or other family member in residential care is often a difficult decision.

“It’s not a light switch,” said wong. “Typically, seniors and thei r loved ones or fa m i l ies have really struggled. They’ve struggled for a long time in the community with all kinds of supportive services, home care, etc.

And then finally, as a result of multiple health conditions, and sometimes it includes things like mental health conditions, like dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, or significant disability, or significant burnout from the caregivers, then they go in there.” “nobody says, ‘I’m dreaming of

going to a care home when I get old,’” said Bauschbusch. “And so it’s not something we like to think about a lot. And when the government is having their calls around, informing the next budget, this is not necessarily an area that people have stood up for.”

The system in place until very recently where families had to take the first available bed in the region has in itself been “a traumatic experience,” she said. “you get a call from the hospital saying transport is coming to take your parent to care home B. People have very limited choice.”

At a fundamental level, seniors’ care is an uncomfortable topic, tied up with the issue of ageism, said chaudhury, plus scarce health care dollars and a vulnerable population with limited power to advocate. “definitely at the policy level, it is a reflection of how we have devalued seniors’ care.” •

Totem pole finds rightful home Nono Shen

How James Heish, a Richmond chartered accountant originally from Taiwan, came to be the guardian of a valuable Wuikinuxv totem pole takes us back almost 40 years ago.

That’s when Heish worked as an audit manager and tax supervisor. His role sometimes led him to travel to Indigenous territories across B.C. to provide accounting training for residents. One of his frequent business trips took him to Bella Coola on the Central British Columbia coast.

“He really cherished this craft as it was carved by well-known Indigenous artist Frank Hanuse, whose work has been sold mostly in Germany and other European countries.

“He also told me the market value of the pole was about $4,000. That was in 2008,” recalled Heish.

“I still remember, I changed planes three times before landing in Bella Coola. The travelling process could be arduous, but it was an eye-opening experience for me. I saw the land covered with mushrooms I had never seen before and beautiful streams were flowing along the route,” said Heish.

And it wasn’t just the overwhelming nature that left an impression, it was also the people. Heish made many friends throughout the 10 years he worked with that community. One of those friends was the tribe’s manager.

Eventually, Heish left that job and began teaching accounting at Simon Fraser University.

Settled back into his life in Richmond, Heish lost touch with his friends up in Bella Coola, until about 12 years ago when a familiar name popped up in his email inbox.

It was the tribe manager, who had since moved to Vancouver. In the email, he told Heish about a three-foot totem pole he had

When Heish recently down-sized, he realized it was time to give the totem pole the home it deserves.

The manager added that he would buy the pole back for $5,000 the following year.

“Thinking of those 10 years working and living with them, I decided to help him. So the next day, I took him the $2,500, and he handed me the pole in return. He told me if I didn’t hear from him the next year, the pole officially belongs to me,” said Heish.

Years went by, but the man never returned to retrieve his totem pole. Rather, it has sat proudly in Heish’s home as a beautiful work of art.

“The totem pole offers a glimpse of Wuikinuxv native art. It was created to honour three kings from our nature — the killer whale from our open ocean, the grizzly bear from our rainforest and the eagle from the blue sky.”

But while it’s a moving representation of nature, it also represents a whole culture and the Wuikinuxv people — and that’s where things get problematic.

Dharam Singh is having an affair, but his wife isn’t much bothered. The “mistress,” as Manju Singh refers to her, is in fact their Richmond backyard where her husband spends more time than with his family.

Dharam has been growing plants and vegetables for at least two decades and has turned his once plain backyard “Garden of Eden” lush with lettuce, carrot, kale, chili, mint and herbs.

“I came from Fiji where there were farms and greenery, and since we moved to our current house with a big yard, I’ve spent every moment I could gardening,” said Dharam.

“When there’s no greenery, it’s just not enjoyable.”

Dharam told the Richmond News that on a good sunny day, he would be in his garden for three to four hours tending to “everything he could get to.”

“When I come out to the yard and I start cutting the grass, trimming the plants and moving around, time just passes by so fast.”

However, maintaining the garden has not always been easy.

Several years ago, rats and rodents would sneak into his garden at night and eat his vegetables or damage his flowers.

“It’s not like we could stay up late just to catch them, but they seem to have gone somewhere else now so I’m relieved.”

Dharam credits his wife for helping him even though she said it’s all his hard work.

“If anything, his love for the garden is what makes time spent with the family so much more fun in this space,” said Manju.

“It’s a small space, but he gets lost outside here in the garden.”

“Three or four years ago, no teams had strength and conditioning coaches. Sleep science is back where strength and conditioning was 30 years ago. They are still learning how to integrate it into their programs.

Together, they’ve spent the last few years tailoring sleep programs to help some of the continent’s top major league athletes reach optimum performance levels.

“Sleep is still a new science.”

Now the Steveston father and daughter “sleep doctor” duo are putting all their accumulated knowledge and experience into their first book.

Pat and Suzanne Byrne said they decided to author “Inconvenient Sleep: Why Teams Win and Lose” because they realized there was a serious dearth of knowledge out there about the importance of sleep patterns for athletes.

“Especially for myself, I would hear all kinds of different stories and methods from teammates (about getting to sleep),” explained Richmond-born Suzanne, 29, a former NCAA volleyball player and award-winning athlete.

She thought that was the way to do it.

Pat — who is understood to have implemented the first sleep program in the world for a professional sports organization when he was hired by the Vancouver Canucks in 2008 — acknowledged their work is cut out to get athletes to squeeze sleep science into their already overcrowded schedule.

“(The book) is written for the sports world, showing them the issue itself and what goes on behind it. But it also has so much

Indeed, it was while working in occupational health and safety at WorkSafe BC for 21 years — focusing on sleep and fatigue as a workplace safety issue — that Pat first got the call from the Canucks. “(They) asked if I could go and help them with their travel issues. I spent seven seasons with them from 2008,” said Pat, who has undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry and a master’s in biochemistry.

Between them, they have helped the likes of the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL and the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA, as well as teams in major league soccer and baseball.

“We measure the players’ sleep, as we have to know if they have sleep disorders,” explained Suzanne, who also studied law at Tulane University Law School and graduated with a sports law certificate.

“We tell the players how much sleep they need to maximize their performance and reaction time.

“There’s an individual side to it and a team side to it and we can advise the team about what to do around travel times and rest periods.

“If there are players that don’t go to sleep until 2 a.m., then don’t get them up for a meeting at 7 a.m.

“We create a sleep profile, but it changes team to team. You could have a bunch of young guys who stay up late or others with kids at home who’re getting better sleep on the road than at home.”

In their book, the Byrnes also dispel a few myths surrounding sleep patterns and the devices/treatments out there on the market.

“We can recommend what ones work and what ones don’t,” said Pat. “The other myth is how much sleep people need. Instead of saying to a player, you need eight or nine hours of sleep, we say ‘let’s figure out first how much sleep you need to maximize your reaction time.’ That can be different for each player.”

Introduction There are certain assets we may own, where we are by law permitted to designate a beneficiary in the event of our death. One of the main reasons to designate a beneficiary is to avoid the asset falling into our Estate, and so we avoid exposure of the asset to Probate fees.

The assets most associated with designation are these: i) ii) iii)

TFSAs; RRSPs (and at age 71, RRIFs); Life Insurance policies.

The Minoru Seniors Society invites its members to donate the unused portion of their Minoru Seniors membership back to the Society to ensure the Society can continue to provide important programs and services to seniors in the community. Individual memberships may be extended upon request.

The deceased had two sons. With one, he created a joint bank account and he designated that son as the beneficiary of his RRIF. The other son challenged both assets. He opposed the joint status of the bank account as well as the designation of the RRIF. The “benefitted” son lived with his Father and Mother (the Mother predeceased the Father) and looked after them.

The other son lived in Alberta and was not involved with his parents’ care.

The joint bank accounts had about $285,000 at the date of death, while the RRIF was valued at about $40,000.

The Alberta son operated a business in Alberta, in which his brother and mother invested. The business went bankrupt and both mother and son lost a significant sum of money.

All facility passes will be extended to cover the amount of time that facilities are closed. When the facilities re-open, the additional time will be added to memberships. This includes monthly and annual passes for fitness centres, Richmond aquatic facilities and other facility-specific passes.

The Seniors Facility Pass is $28.00 per year and supports the Society. This pass is available for those 55 years and older and to spouses under the age of 55 years. There is no charge for a Seniors Facility Pass for those 90 years and older.

Passes are valid one year from date of purchase.

Court’s analysis The Court considered the joint bank accounts and concluded, under the revised Canadian law (from the well known Pecore case) that there was not enough evidence to conclude that the deceased Father intended a gift to his son. Therefore, the son held the funds in resulting trust for the Estate.

With respect to the designation, the Court treated the designation the same as the joint bank account. The Court characterized the designation as a gratuitous transfer of property, the same as creating a joint bank account. The Court then held that, again, there was insufficient evidence to establish that the deceased Father intended to gift the RRIF to his son. So the RRIF funds became part of the late Father’s Estate.

Conclusions It is not known at present whether the case has been appealed. Surely it may. That aside, the case sets a significant precedent. Designation has never before been an issue that merited the same legal treatment as joint bank accounts or joint titles to land. For now, in my opinion, any designation should be reflected in a person’s Will and probably in a separate statement of intention, signed by the Adult Will maker/designator. I am not suggesting the case is wrongly decided but it is the first case I have seen in Canada where a designation has been defeated. Any person who has made a designation of an asset, and has more than one child, should get advice.

While many businesses struggled to figure out what to do with their used PPE after re-opening, one Richmond hair salon was way ahead of the curve.

“So, 95 per cent of our waste gets recycled. For example, our hair clippings actually go to make fill booms for oil spills. The nail polish gets recycled as well.

Many residents have been complaining about the discarding of used masks, gloves and face shields since phase 3 of the pandemic allowed certain operations to open to the public.

And that was top of mind for Jessica Vero and her Vero & Co Studio team at their vegan hair salon near No. 5 and Williams roads.

straight away in disposable aprons, gloves, face shields, everything,” said Vero, who opened the salon three years ago with the

“It was actually a natural transition to using the PPE in the same program.

“That was a big thing for us, being able to recycle everything when we re-opened.”

All of their PPE, added Vero, is a one-time use, with a new mask being worn by staff for every client.

The used materials, she said, are getting recycled, incinerated and turned into ashes, which are then used to make filler in asphalt and other construction material.

Since re-opening, Vero said business has been gradually picking up, with more new clients looking for healthy and environmentally friendly options.

She explained, however, that she has not increased her eco fee per client to cope with the increased recycling from the PPE. “We’re not passing that cost on to customers, that’s on us,” said Vero, adding that it costs them $67 per Green Circle box. “We pack it in pretty good.”

Michelle Gremsperger has been serving McDonald’s customers for 22 years in Richmond, her hometown, and this year she was recognized for her efforts with the Ray Kroc Award, given for operational excellence.

Gremsperger manages the oldest McDonald’s in Canada — at No. 3 Road and Granville Avenue — and the award she received only goes to one per cent of managers.

Gremsperger said she was “in shock” when she found out she won the award for her work as a restaurant manager, something she thoroughly enjoys doing.

Gremsperger has been the manager at the No. 3 Road location since 2016.

Joe Guzzo, who owns the No. 3 Road McDonald’s franchise along with several others, said Gremsperger’s success comes from creating a fun work environment for the staff.

“Michelle has really stepped up to ensure all safety measures are adhered to during COVID-19, and I am personally very proud of her for this well-deserved award,” he added.

BEHRMANN, Bernard (Jack) A. May 26, 1954 − July 22, 2020 Bernard A. Behrmann (Jack) passed away peacefully on July 22, 2020, after bravely battling COVID−19 and its complications for more than 100 days.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy; and children, Michael (Caitlin), David, and Talia; and brother, Arnold (Adrienne). Jack was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Rachel.

Jack was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and immigrated to Edmonton in 1984, where he did his pediatric training and began his career as a pediatrician. He moved with his young family to Richmond in 1996, and became a pediatrician at the Richmond General Hospital. He established a thriving practice in Developmental and Behavioural Pediatrics, and touched the lives of many families.

He was the Chief of Pediatrics for 10 years, and during that time advocated for the rights of Richmond families to have adequate care for children in their own community. He loved children, but none more than his own, to whom he was an active, loving, and sometimes strict father. After he retired at the end of 2014, he and Cindy enjoyed travelling and spending the winters in the sun and warmth of their Caribbean home.

Jack will be sorely missed by his family, and many friends and families that he cared for throughout his career.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richmond General Hospital Foundation, Pediatrics or ICU, or to the charity of one’s choice.

FELLOWES, David Paul October 7, 1953 − July 11, 2020 Sadly we must share that David Paul Fellowes passed suddenly on July 11, 2020. He was an exceptionally proud father of two children and a caring son, son−in−law, brother, uncle, and friend.

Dave worked for many years at Steveston winemakers where he shared his knowledge of wine with the community he loved. Dave was passionate about his crafts: winemaking, fly fishing, and guitar playing, but what he loved most of all was "family time" whether on the boat in BC or the cottage in Ontario. This genuinely friendly and deeply caring man will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and neighbours. We will honour Dave’s wishes for an immediate family gathering to celebrate his life, but would appreciate your prayers and wishes be sent to him by way of a toast with your next glass of wine.

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

Jim grew up in Richmond, BC. Popular and well respected by his co-workers, associates and friends, Jim began what turned out to be a long and substantial travel career - at Pacific Western Airlines in 1970, working at Vancouver Airport in Customer Service and Airport Operations.

He soon moved up the ladder, and was sales manager in the Charter Division when he left the airline in 1978. In Toronto, he joined Suntours, progressing through management positions until he went to Air Canada Vacations, where he remained for many years, choosing to retire some years ago.

Jim was smart, interesting, always ready for a good time and definitely a bit of a character whose exploits could engender much amusement and laughter.

“He always had a smile on his face and never had a bad word about anyone or anything. He truly was nature’s gentleman and will be sorely missed by everyone who had the good fortune to know him.”

Jim had the kindest soul, the hardest work ethic, the most discipline, the wittiest sense of humour and the greatest love for the people in his life.

We’ll kick it into high gear for you always.

As one of his good friend’s said in his last days: You were perfect.
