“Not good” is never what you want to hear when you’ve just asked your 92-yearold mother how she’s doing. But this wasn’t an “Oh, I’m fading…,” not good. This was more of a frantic, “OMG!,“ not good. It turned out my father had lost some money. Not lost as in at the casino or even on the stock market, but lost, as in somewhere in their apartment or walking home from the bank. After the usual inane questions like, “Has he checked his pockets?” I ﬁnally asked, “How much are we talking about?” “$1,000 — cash,” was the answer. Okay, I get the OMG! tone. I won’t go into why my dad took out $1,000 cash — 10 $100 bills to be precise. There was a reason, not a great one given the risks, but it still had a certain logic.

The next day, I called all the stores, telling our sad story. I had many sympathetic listeners but no leads. And, really, what was I thinking? Even if someone had wanted to return it, where would they return it to, especially if it was just found on the street? About an hour after I had called Super Grocer, the pharmacist called back to say, “Well, actually, someone here says that someone came in yesterday and said that someone lost something and ‘if they come in looking for it they can call me.’” I asked if the person said if they had found money, but the pharmacist said they didn’t say, she just left her name and number.

There was a pause as my inside voice asked, “So, are you actually going to give it to me?” She then asked where I was and told me where she was. It turns out she lives just blocks away in a housing co-op, so I went over. She came to the door and simply handed me the envelope. Even then, I wondered if there could be a catch. It was only when I opened the envelope to give her one of the bills in thanks and saw all the money in there, that I suddenly realized this was for real. She explained she had noticed the envelope just lying on the sidewalk, outside Super Grocer. My dad had sat on a bench there while my mom went in to get something. She had also noticed it was from RBC so went there to see if someone had come in looking for it... Incredible.

In the media, we’re often accused of telling too many bad news stories, and fair enough. Much of what’s deemed “news” is about what’s gone wrong. The problem with that is we end up with a skewed perspective.

I do think this woman is exceptional. She could have so easily pocketed the cash. But I also think there are more folks like her than we might imagine, we just don’t hear enough about them. But now for the kicker. At ﬁrst she didn’t want to take the bill I gave her as reward. But I insisted — literally forcing it into her hand. When she ﬁnally took it, she said, “Oh, I could donate it to this...” She went back inside and came out with a notice for a project her church is working on. As I walked away, I thought about how this person could easily have an extra $1,000, or at least $100, in her account right now, but she’s choosing to invest it in another kind of wealth. What an example. And I have no doubt the dividends will be far greater for us all.

Then, we talked about the places they had stopped on their walk home from the bank through Steveston. By this time, it was after 9 p.m., so we couldn’t call the shops, but I went out and walked the route looking left and right scouring the sidewalk for that precious little RBC envelope. Nothing.

I wrote it down thinking, could this really be? I phoned the number. A woman answered and I explained our saga. She asked how much was lost, I told her, and she just said, “Yes, that’s what I have here.”

CERB advice offered Dear Editor,

Re: “Reader calls out for CERB help,” Letters, July 9. I have some advice for Mr.Tai. I have dealt with similar problems helping my elderly working deaf uncle apply for CERB. For people 75 years and older, the CRA does not let people apply for CERB online or through the phone line. They have to call a special number and speak directly with a CRA agent. Of course, in the case of my uncle, he is deaf so a normal phone call won’t do. They also asked him to call their TTY line (it’s kind of like texting, but older, worse technology). His English is pretty bad and we never used TTY before so I told the CRA agent, and we had to wait about four days

and a CRA agent who knew Chinese spoke to us.

She tried to verify his identity through the phone. The process was very cumbersome and in the end, he wasn’t able to verify his identity. They asked him to conﬁrm his address in English. How are you supposed to do that when you don’t know English and are deaf? At one point, they asked him to read his postal code. He doesn’t know the alphabet or what it sounds like.... The whole thing was very stupid and awkward. I suggested various other ways to conﬁrm his identity including getting his information notarized, but ultimately was told CRA does not have any protocol in place for people who fall outside the typical means of applying for CERB.

Seniors need safe ﬁtness space during COVID-19

At that point I decided to re-explore the TTY telephone option. So after some research it turns out that iPhones have a TTY function that can be enabled. I used the TTY phone to call the CRA TTY line.

Dear Editor, Re: “Who gets gym time?,” Voices, May 21. I am a disabled senior living in Richmond. Despite my problems, I work very hard at staying as ﬁt as possible. This winter/spring was of course horrendous for all, but particularly bad for persons like myself. From mid-March to early July, there have been no gyms and no pools.

I texted all the CERB application info (address, birthday, SIN, 2019 income tax return line 150, and name of person/ company who ﬁled tax return) to the CRA agent and the application went through. I managed to do this successfully twice before my uncle went back to work.

I am one of the lucky ones who has a pool at our complex, but come Thanksgiving, our pools will close. I, like many others, am unable to walk enough for exercise, especially in cold weather, so walking in the park, or biking or jogging are not an option.

So please tell Mr. Tai to ﬁnd a TTY phone and get someone they trust to apply for them. It works.

her disabled sister. I understand opening any pools at this time might be very tricky, but I think if we focused on just seniors and disabled persons (as a start) it would be very helpful. I am very scared of dying due to the pandemic, not from COVID-19, but from lack of exercise. Realizing the difﬁculty of this request, perhaps opening part of the new pool complex attached to the seniors meeting place might be a good start. Swimming and water exercises are the best exercise for persons of any age or ability. We all know there will be residue deaths from this pandemic. Let’s continue making Richmond a leader in health in the province and in Canada.

Mall staff exposed to COVID Fatal crash Kirsten Clarke

A staff member at Lansdowne Centre has been exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19, a spokesperson for the mall confirmed Tuesday. The employee, a member of the mall’s management team which works in Lansdowne’s administrative offices, was exposed to the virus while offsite at a private family event. Mall management was informed of the exposure July 11, spokesperson Bronwyn Bailey told the Richmond News in an email. “The team member…has not experienced any symptoms associated with COVID-19 and is currently self-isolating, and will not return to work until they receive proper health clearances,” said Bailey, adding the administrative offices are separate from the retail shops and are only accessible

to staff. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Vancouver Coastal Health said the health authority is not aware of any risk to the public at the mall, and that VCH has not issued any public notiﬁcations about the exposure. On Monday, a notice was issued to Lansdowne tenants advising them of the potential exposure. A photo of that notice was then widely circulated on social media. The notice said the centre had been “potentially exposed to the novel coronavirus through an individual, or a group of individuals, either visiting or working in the building.”

Bailey said there have been no other cases reported at the ofﬁces or the mall, which remains “open and safe to guests.” The administrative ofﬁces have been disinfected and all tenants were informed of the situation.

causes gas leak

The driver and lone occupant of a Corvette was killed in a collision with a semi-truck that also led to the evacuation of businesses due to a gas leak.

RCMP said the collision happened shortly after 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 11 near Nelson and Blundell roads. The collision sent the sports car into a gas pipeline meter on the side of the road. “Speed is considered a factor in this collision,” said Cpl. Adriana Peralta, spokesperson for the Richmond RCMP. Diana Sorace, spokesperson for FortisBC, said the vehicle damaged the cage and the gas pipe meter in it, but did not affect the main natural gas line. “The top priority at FortisBC is the safety of everyone, so our ﬁrst job was to turn off the gas that was running to a single commercial building from that meter,” said Sorace, adding they have been unable to make repairs because of an ongoing investigation. “The investigation was still active and … a memorial is believed to be there so FortisBC won’t be doing repairs until next week.”

Suspect arrested after ‘weapons call’

A 22,000 square-foot megamansion on agricultural land has just hit the market on No. 6 Road, the likes of which are now not permitted to be built after the City

A suspect was taken into custody in east Richmond, following an hours-long standoff after a “weapons call” to the RCMP. The suspect, a 43-year-old man, was arrested in the 22600 block of Gilley Road in Hamilton, after police responded to a domestic incident just after 5 p.m. last Thursday. “The initial report was that a distraught male inside the home was trashing the place during a violence outburst,” said RCMP in a release. The man was known to police and was also reported to be in possession of a ﬁrearm. A woman ﬂed the residence before the lone male suspect

More than a dozen police vehicles, a SWAT team — the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team — and an ambulance were seen on Gilley Road at Westminster Highway. Caner Altunas, a Hamilton resident, told the Richmond News a couple of people in the neighbourhood claim to have spotted a man carrying ﬁrearms and called police after feeling “threatened.” Sounds of either “ﬂash bangs” or gunshots were heard in the neighbourhood, according to Facebook posts. After a lengthy standoff, the suspect was taken into custody “without incident” early Friday morning.

Harold Steves campaigned 50 years ago for a new museum for Steveston — he’s hoping before he ends his last term on council in 2022, it will ﬁnally be well underway. With original plans for a museum in Steveston waylaid for several years by more grandiose ideas for a destination museum closer to the current city centre, Richmond council has now approved reconstructing the former Phoenix Net Loft with preliminary plans to make it into a museum. “Some things take a long time,” Steves told the Richmond News with a chuckle.

Student issues warning after ‘abduction’ attempt Nono Shen

A Richmond woman who survived a possible abduction attempt is sharing her terrifying experience with the public to warn others. According to the fourth-year international student, who is attending Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Richmond campus, on July 6 around midnight she was parking her car in her apartment’s garage in central Richmond when she was approached by a blue BMW. As she was getting out of her car, a man got out of the BMW, ran towards her and pepper sprayed her in the face. Then, a woman emerged from the same car and blocked the victim’s way, asking her if she needed help.

“However, the female didn’t help me. Instead, she dragged me and let the man pepper-spray me for the second time. Then they tried to pull me into their car with my hoodie. “I got rid of my hoodie and ran desperately towards the elevator door,” said the alleged victim. In the elevator, she went up to her apartment ﬂoor, ran down the hallway and banged on the door to her apartment. Her boyfriend quickly answered and immediately called the police. The student said her eyes were stinging and watery, and her nose was running from the pepper spray. Her arms and legs are still bruised, she added. “The whole experience was very traumatic, and I still feel the pain while recalling the memory. “But I don’t want to see this horrible thing happen to others.

“Especially for women who live or travel alone, always be careful and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety,” said the woman. Richmond RCMP conﬁrmed they are investigating the incident. It is unclear if this was, in fact, a kidnapping attempt. But in April 2019, Wanzhen Lu, 22, an international student from China, was forced into a minivan in an underground parking garage in Markham, Ont. A ransom was demanded and Lu was found three days later on a rural road in Gravenhurst, Ont. The suspects in that case have been arrested. More recently, police have warned of a number of virtual kidnapping scams that have targeted international Chinese students as a means to extort money from the students’ families.

Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a missing 35-year-old Richmond man, who was last Shawn Johnson seen in Chilliwack. Shawn William Johnson was last seen near the 9000 block of Main Street in Chilliwack June 30. Johnson is described as a Caucasian male, standing 180 cm (5’10”) tall, with a slim build, brown or auburn hair and blue eyes. RCMP say he may be driving a grey 2001 Nissan Altima with a damaged rear window. The license plate is KA6 O3N.

Mahy, who has doggedly persisted in having the police and courts pursue this case, said he was recently told by the Crown prosecutor that the man charged in the fatality, Erjon Kashari, has been arrested in Bulgaria and will be sent back to Richmond when COVID-related travel restrictions are lifted.

“She (the prosecutor) congratulated me on my persistence. In six years I haven’t given it up. I couldn’t,” said Mahy.

However, the driver was not charged and soon after left the country.

In an email to the Richmond News, Alisia Adams with the BC Prosecution Service, would only conﬁrm, as she did a year ago, that Kashari has been charged with criminal negligence causing the death of Christy. However, she referred extradition questions to the federal Department of Justice. The News has reached out to that department. It was July 30, 2014 when Ron’s daughter, Christy Mahy, 36, was standing with her bike at the Dinsmore Bridge intersection on Russ Baker Way on her way home to Burkville, when an SUV, bearing an N, jumped the curb and plowed into her. The driver stayed at the scene and there were numerous witnesses.

For the ﬁrst few years after Christy’s death, Mahy said he was given little information about the case and, to this day, he still doesn’t understand why the driver wasn’t charged immediately, particularly as there were so many witnesses prepared to give statements. Determined to not let his daughter’s story be forgotten, however, Mahy, a Harley Davidson rider, organized a motorcycle ride in Christy’s name in 2015, which has run every year since. Richmond city councillor Alexa Loo called the arguments against the expansion of the Tilbury liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant “spurious” and said other councillors were making “irresponsible allegations” about its potential dangers. Council voted 8-1 to oppose the FortisBC expansion project, which would double the capacity of the Tilbury LNG plant in Delta, just across the water from Richmond. They also endorsed a city staff report outlining concerns about the project, which they will send to senior levels of government as part of the environmental assessment process and to other Lower Mainland municipalities, asking their councils to endorse the comments. Loo called the city staff report “onesided,” saying it doesn’t look at positive aspects of LNG, for example, financial benefits like $60 million in “contractor spending” during the 2018 expansion

The report also doesn’t look at the environmental benefits, she added, citing examples of New Delhi and China where LNG has reduced pollution. “LNG dissipates, it doesn’t sink and it doesn’t explode and it doesn’t affect the fish when it does spill,” Loo added. While Coun. Bill McNulty argued for Richmond to push for a “watch dog” on the Fraser River, Coun. Harold Steves said the argument that LNG is a cleaner fuel is a “myth.” Steves said scientists studying LNG production and its use concluded burning LNG is just as bad for producing greenhouse gases, if not worse, than using coal given the fracking, production and transportation. “There are no benefits for the environment for burning LNG,” Steves said. “It’s simply, unfortunately, B.C. has a lot of it and we can make money selling it, but it’s certainly not good for the environment — it’s certainly not good for climate change that is happening in our planet.”

A half dozen lifeguards were practicing rescue techniques at Steveston Outdoor Pool on Friday in preparation for Monday’s re-opening of the pool with new COVID-19 protocols in place — even for saving a life. Face shields, masks, gloves and gowns were donned by the lifeguards as they did CPR on mannequins and they went through the manoeuvres, checking their timing and routine with the extra gear on. Ethan Poehlke, a full-time lifeguard in Richmond, said he’s excited to have swimmers back at Steveston Outdoor Pool this week, and he believes it’s good for people’s mental health to be back in the water and active. “I feel people have been missing (the pool) — it’s part of the culture here,” he said. Outdoor ﬁtness classes were also launched by the city on July 6 including Zumba, Kardio Kickboxing and yoga, with physical distancing measures in place, and some tennis courts can now be booked. Restrictions on the number of people and where they can swim are in place at Steveston Outdoor Pool. The pool’s maximum capacity is normally 200, but now there can only be a few dozen people at a time. The lane pool has been split into three lanes and four people are allowed to swim in each one at any given time. The smaller pool has been roped off into three sections where family or friend bubbles can swim in groups of no larger than four. At times, some lanes will be opened up for recreational swimming. To open the pool, staff had to follow guidelines from Vancouver Coastal Health, B.C. Recreation and Parks Association, WorkSafeBC and the Lifesaving Society. It’s a Richmond summer tradition — picking berries. But like most traditions, covid-19 is playing havoc with how it’s done. For the past 50 years, folks have arrived at Rag Nijjer’s 15-acre blueberry farm, bucket in hand, to wander through the bushes picking the plump blue berries. While people are welcome again this year at the U-pick, they should expect some new covid-inspired protocols. “Customers will be provided with buckets from us, so they don’t need to bring their own. We will sanitize each bucket before handing it out to them.

“At the entrance, staff will direct pickers to speciﬁc areas and inform them of the guidelines,” said Nijjer, adding that the big farmland makes it easy for people to maintain social-distancing.

Meanwhile, pickers are encouraged to wear face coverings in the ﬁelds; they must also phone ahead to make an appointment. Nijjer said he expects to see fewer kids come out this year because parents want to keep their children safe. However, he thinks berry picking is still a great activity to keep children busy and entertained. “Many people told me they are happy to be able to get out and enjoy the sunshine while picking up some fresh fruit,” said Nijjer. The farm will open for pickers at the end of July.

The sports field at the Minoru Oval, one of the city’s busiest, is getting a makeover. This week, the city started preparations to replace the field’s artificial turf, which requires that 10,000 square metres of the field be resurfaced. As a result, the use of the Minoru track will be “slightly” affected during construction, according to the city. The resurfacing is expected to be finished in September but this will depend on the weather. For the duration of the work, track use will be affected by a plywood “bridge,”

which will be installed across the eight track lanes. The bridge will allow heavy equipment to enter and exit the work zone from the east side of the track, however, it will prevent track users from being able to run or walk around the entire track. The city says the remaining track surface will be divided into a one-way course with four lanes in one direction and four lanes in the other direction. Signs have been posted around the track and field showing the one-way routes. Johal said there are often two solitudes in politics — the “strident left” and the “strident right” — with one calling on widespread police reform and the other calling for stronger policing. However, he said “the truth lies somewhere in the

middle. I think both sides do have a point,” he added. But, he said, it’s the marginalized people who experience police more negatively, not middle-class families. “What can we do … to make things better for (marginalized people) but also make it easier for police officers to do their job,” Johal said. As part of the committee work, Johal said he would support examining whether there are funding models better suited to supporting mental health and housing. “Most police officers will tell you, ‘I went into policing to police — I’m not a mental health expert, I’m not an expert in housing’,” Johal said. “We put a lot on the shoulders of police officers every single day to deal with these issues.”

The Richmond Christmas fund is kicking off its fundraising events early this year to make sure low-income families can still celebrate the spirit of the holidays despite the impact of COVID-19.

For example, Not So Silent Night, dubbed Not So Isolated Night for 2020, will most likely become a virtual event while plans for the RCMP toy drive and Windows of Hope are still being discussed.

The program — run by non-proﬁt Richmond Cares Richmond Gives (RCRG) — is launching its new WearTheBear campaign by selling reusable masks that are locally sourced in the city.

The Beer, Wine and Sours fundraiser, which raised $13,000 in 2019, will be cancelled this year.

Each mask is decorated with the Christmas Fund logo and RCRG’s mascot bear, and will be sold for $20 online and at selected locations in Richmond. Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of RCRG, said they are hoping to sell at least 500 masks, which will help provide $10,000 towards purchasing food carts to distribute to families during Christmas. “We have lost a lot of our regular fundraising events for the Christmas Fund because

Memorial fund set up for Nagata Alan Campbell

A memorial fund to support underprivileged youth athletes in B.C. has been set up in the name of the late Kory Nagata.

“He was an extraordinary young man with an incredibly promising future, beloved and respected by his teammates, coaches, and friends. He made his family immeasurably proud.”

Nagata had spent some time in Virginia as a young boy and was raised in Richmond, where he began his football career as a running back for Richmond’s Hugh Boyd Trojans in high school.

The Kory Nagata Memorial Fund was established last week to honour the 24-year-old Richmondite, who recently lost his life on the Fraser River after trying to retrieve a football that had fallen into the water near the Paciﬁc Gateway Hotel.

Steveston will have another trafﬁc calming pilot on the August long weekend. Moncton Street will be closed and Bayview Street will be one-way between No. 1 Road and Third Avenue from Saturday morning to Monday evening, Aug. 1 to Aug. 3.

While a suggestion to continue this trafﬁc calming during the entire month of August was rejected by the majority, council supported investing up to $35,000 to allow it during the long weekend to allow for more physical distancing.

Like many industries relying heavily on labour during the pandemic, the farming sector has been particularly hard hit. So the news of a record $3.9 billion in sales last year may temper some of the adverse effects no doubt coming down the pipe later this year and beyond.

According to the BBB, scammers are creating fake accounts on online job platforms like Upwork and Craigslist, using photos and resumes of real professionals and “enticing businesses with low rates.”

Areas of growth included a close to $300-million increase in cannabis sales, along with a $47-million increase in dairy sales, a $25-million increase in beef sales and a $17.5-million increase in ﬁeld vegetable sales.

Meanwhile, a small business or individual may look to hire a freelancer, for example, a software developer or a graphic designer, and post the job opportunity online. On some sites, businesses can connect directly with freelancers.

The ﬁgures represent an increase of more than 13 per cent, or $462 million, more than 2018.

On that site, the person looking to hire may ﬁnd a freelancer that looks perfect for the job, with a resume outlining the knowledge and years of experience required for the role.

Indeed, the B.C. government hopes 2019’s bumper sales in the farming industry is a sign of a strong recovery in the future. Other sectors/commodities with increased sales include: * eggs - $14 million; * nursery - $14 million;

Owners of small businesses looking to hire freelancers should be aware of scammers who may advertise low rates, according to the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Workers in the non-medical cannabis industry will now only have to go through security checks every five years, instead of the current two. That’s the news from the B.C. government, which claims the move will help with the cannabis retail industry’s need for more security-screened workers, as well as reducing costs to workers and reducing interruptions from having to go through criminal record checks. The government claims the move will also “allow provincial security screening resources to focus on the qualification of new workers rather than the requalification of current workers who are already working in the legal cannabis retail industry.” Security screening and re-screening requirements were implemented as a measure to keep organized crime out of the legal, non-medical cannabis market.

“Best of all, this freelancer’s rate is far below what other similarly qualiﬁed persons are charging,” reads a release from the BBB. “You decide to hire them and pay a deposit up front as instructed.”

Screenings involve background checks with police, courts and corrections databases. To date, 4,300 workers have been screened.

The federal government is investing $17.5 million into a rail terminal expansion in north Richmond, intended to help improve supply chain efﬁciency and provide access to new markets overseas. The “rail footprint” of the Ray-Mont Logistics terminal, located at 15900 River Rd., near No. 7 Road, will be increased to accommodate unit trains, while the terminal’s specialty grain and container handling equipment will be upgraded, according to a spokesperson for Transport Canada. The expansion will increase terminal capacity by about 160 per cent, or 1.7 million tonnes per year. “Our government is investing in Canada’s economy by making improvements to our trade and transportation corridors,” said Transport Minister Marc Garneau in a statement announcing the investment June 30. The facility receives and unloads grain from a variety of Canadian agricultural producers, according to Transport Canada.

DOG WALKER and SITTER

SIDHU, Nasib Kaur November 18, 1932 - July 11, 2020 Nasib Kaur Sidhu passed away peacefully on July 11, 2020. “Sebo” was born in the village of Dhudike in the district of Moga, Punjab India. She was the eldest and only daughter born to the late Sudagar Singh and Bhagwhan Kaur Gill. Nasib Kaur was predeceased by her loving husband the late Jagir Singh Sidhu and her son Karnail Sidhu, daughters in law Shavinder and Sukhwant Sidhu, brother Hakim Gill and sister in law Charno Gill. She is survived by her son Minder Sidhu (Lilly), grandchildren: Roop, Harry (Amber), Neena (Paul), Veeran (Danny), Amin (Tony), Gopaul and by 11 beautiful great grandchildren. She also leaves behind her brother’s family, nephew Raj Gill, Gurmeet Sengara, Cindy Gill, Surinder Mahal and their families. Nasib Kaur immigrated to New Westminster, BC with her husband and two sons in 1959. She leaves behind a legacy of determination, hard work and her attributes are well known within the farming community of Richmond. Sebo started working on the farms in Richmond and paved the way for many other Indian women to enter the workforce. She was a pioneer for the Indian community and made it possible for the next generations to prosper and flourish. In her early days of working on the farms she set her mind on one day owning the lands that she worked so tirelessly on. Over the years, she achieved her goals and successfully went on to build a farming empire for generations to come. Her dedication and devotion to the Sikh faith allowed her passion of Seva, contributing to ones community with honour and privilege. The family sends a very special thank you to the nurses, doctors and hospital staff of Richmond General Hospital, and especially for the care and attention she received at Royal City Manor who became her second family during Covid 19.

EULER, Victor Nelson It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of loving husband, father, grandad and uncle, Vic, on Friday, July 10, 2020. Vic was born in Vancouver, BC on January 04, 1934 to Jesse and Frederick R. Euler. Vic was the youngest of 9, Lucinda, Velma, Vena, Ivan, Freda, Fred, Larry and Mel. Vic grew up in the Mount Pleasant district and always had time to share stories of his childhood experiences, tidbits about local history and proudly joke he had “webbed feet” as proof of being a true Vancouverite. Vic trained as a butcher, ran his own shop for several years in Vancouver. He sold his shop and began a lengthy career with Super Valu and later a few independent grocery stores, finally retiring in 1994. Vic always boasted that he never suffered a severe cut which is rare in the meat industry. Vic met the love of his life, Amy Joyce Shepherd at Arthur Murray dance studio and they married on September 01, 1956. They moved to Richmond in 1958, where they raised their two daughters Candace and Marlita. Vic was a beloved member of the Steveston United Church and was the chairperson for numerous years. Vic is predeceased by his wife Joyce of 58 years, survived by daughters, Candace (Jose) Marlita (Dan) their grandchildren April (Joel), Jennifer (Julius) Jasmine (Piero), Maranda (Caleb), Harmony (Mat) and Destiny (Seb); great-grandchildren Samantha, Heidi, Josef, Sebastian, Jaxon, Kahlina, Jaden, Eliana, Sophia and Nicolas; sister-in-law Ann Shepherd as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service is being planned. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Vic’s name to the Steveston United Church, the Heart & Stroke Foundation or BC Children’s Hospital.

MURAO, Toshio July 5, 2020 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Toshio Murao. He was predeceased in 2019 by his wife of 72 years, Kimiyo; his parents, Mon and Katsujiro; daughter, Toshimi; and daughter−in−law, Anne. He is dad to Kay (Kelvin), Ray, Louise (Peter), Ken (Janet), Joyce (Randall), and Dick (Debbie); and is fondly remembered as grandpa by 13 grandchildren, and "jiichan" by 9 great−grandchildren. Born in Steveston in 1920, Toshio or "Tos−san" as he is fondly called, passed away peacefully 100 years later on July 5, 2020. Tos−san is remembered as a strong supporter of his family, friends, and community. He was an active member of several clubs and organizations and participated in several initiatives including the Steveston Japanese Canadian Cultural Center, Nikkei Fisherman’s Project, and the Steveston Nikkei Memorial. He received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for community service, and in 2014 the Consul General of Japan Certificate of Recognition for his work in support of the Steveston Nikkei community. In 2020 he received the title of "Soden So Shihan", the highest rank below a founder/master of Kokufu style shigin. Tos−san lived life to the fullest and is remembered for his big smile and the friendships he cultivated. He will be dearly missed, but we know he is reunited with his wife and coffee buddies. The family extends their appreciation to the VCH Palliative Care team for their compassionate care during this difficult time. A private family service was held on July 12, 2020. Flowers and koden are gratefully declined, but donations can be made in his memory to the Steveston Buddhist Temple or a charity of your choice.
