Language not black and white Eve Edmonds EEDMONDS@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
So why is it that white people are called Caucasian? And why are we now capitalizing Black when talking about Black people or Black culture? Good questions...and coming to you from the Richmond News Facebook page. Under our post about the fact La Toya Barrington is organizing an anti-racism demonstration on Saturday (see page 8), Sergei Levchenko wrote, “I would like to know why white people here call themselves ‘Caucasians’ lol. You can’t imagine how bizarre that is, to someone from Russia or other ex-Soviet countries. I recall when I first arrived here, started school here, Grade 8, and a staff member referred to me as a ‘Caucasian’ on some form. I was, like, ‘I am not a Caucasian, I am Slavic...’ To us, Caucasians are people from the Caucasus Mountains — Georgians, Armenians, Chechens, etc. Not white people in Canada... “ Andrew Wade jumped in with, “Side topic, but as a bit of history, the term ‘Caucasian’ was popularized by a German who divided humans into five races, with ‘Caucasians’ being considered as ‘created in God’s image as an ideal
form of humanity’, while the other four were ‘physically and morally degenerate forms of God’s original creation.’ So the history of the term is pretty darn racist. (www.sapiens.org/.../caucasianterminology-origin/)” I’ve never liked the term Caucasian, even putting its racist origins aside. It has always seemed like an awkward way to sanitize or couch what we’re really talking about. Right now, Canada and the U.S. are in the throes of an urgent debate about racism and inequality. It’s not about where our ancestors may have originated. It’s about the power and privilege we may or may not experience due to the colour of our skin. It’s a hard enough subject anyway, we at least need clear language to discuss it. On the website workforce.com, Susana Rinderle writes a column titled, 6 Reasons Not to Say Caucasian. (I love it when I google, “Caucasian versus white” and a perfectly eloquent article pops up to make my case.) Rinderle notes, “Physical whiteness plays a much bigger role in white Americans’ lives than our European-ness, just like blackness determines African Americans’ lives and experiences more than their African-ness. Compare how a white African is perceived and treated with how a black African is.”
She adds, “Caucasian is a pseudo scientific term used to create distance from race discussion or racial identification.” And I think that’s key. We need to name what we’re talking about. So, now, why do we capitalize Black but not white? The Columbia Journalism Review, recently wrote, “Black is an ethnic designation; white merely describes the skin color of people who can, usually without much difficulty, trace their ethnic origins back to a handful of European countries.” To capitalize Black, the Review notes, is to acknowledge that slavery deliberately stripped people forcibly shipped overseas of all other ethnic/national ties. So a capitalized Black it is at the Richmond News. Perhaps I’m being inconsistent, having just said skin colour is the thing, not ancestry. But here we’re not talking about what word to use but whether to recognize the racial identity of a particular group. If there’s a good argument to do the same for white, we’ll consider it. Regardless, what’s clear is language has power; it reflects and perpetuates the views and values of its culture. But language also evolves, which is why this is an opportune time to think about what we want our language to say when it comes to race.

Apology for racist Dispose of masks, Kudos goes to helpers, News gloves properly rant offered Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor, Re: “Richmond man vents to Asian group,” News, June 11 On Sunday, June 7, at the Convention Centre in Vancouver, I regrettably was the guilty party who made unwarranted and racist remarks to an innocent party of people waiting in line for lunch. The group was originally from Taiwan and worked for a media company. I am sorry for what I said, which was picked up by social media. I apologize, unconditionally, to the group who were offended by my remarks. The group, as a whole, had every right to feel offended and I am taking responsibility for my unacceptable comments. My frustration, on an exceptionally bad day for me, has its roots in my being an advocate for the cessation of the practice of birth tourism in the Lower Mainland, but most specifically, in Richmond, where I live. Unfortunately, for reasons that escape me, the Minister of Immigration, Marco Mendicino, has not deemed this problem as a priority. Media sources, including CBC The Fifth Estate and the Richmond News have done major stories on this problem, which is rooted in a loophole in the tourism visa process. The loophole, from the information that I have, is an administrative one, that could be quickly corrected, if the political will was there. By eliminating this administrative loophole, the maternity wards in the Lower Mainland would be able to free up much needed space to expectant mothers who respected the process and did not jump the line. Again, my apologies, and my concern in regards to the unacceptable and unfair practice of birth tourism, that we all should collectively be outraged about moving forward.

Who are you? Are you the one who tossed your used gloves and mask beside the sidewalk on No. 1 Road near Moncton Street Wednesday afternoon? Was that your COVID-19 litter? I don’t know what you were thinking, but you got my attention. Stopped me cold. Sadly, I see it more and more — potentially infected masks and gloves discarded in parks, on sidewalks, in parking lots. It makes no sense. Why go to the expense, discomfort and bother of wearing a mask and gloves and then, when you’re done with whatever you were doing, toss them on the ground? It seems important to point out, that — according to Dr. Bonnie Henry and other pandemic experts — unless you’re wearing medical grade equipment, the masks and gloves are to protect other people from you. Apparently, your mask prevents your droplets from spraying out, not the other way around. Given that you may have the virus and not know it, when you take the masks and gloves off and toss them on the sidewalk in downtown Steveston, you’re not just littering, you are potentially putting others at risk. So, here’s an idea: don’t do it anymore. Be kind. Be calm. Be safe — put your used gloves and mask in the garbage.

Invest in seniors? Dear Editor,
Re: “Who is profiting from seniors?” Voices, June 11. A number of years ago I read in the financial advice magazine Moneysense if you really want your money to work for you, invest in a nursing home. Grenade found on transit bus
BC Ferries death Speeding drivers sparks probe slowed by fast tickets Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
A man died Friday after falling into the river at BC Ferries’ Richmond maintenance facility. The man was working at the Fleet Maintenance Unit on Rice Mill Road, just west of the George Massey Tunnel, when he fell into the Fraser River. Late Friday night, Richmond RCMP and search and rescue crews were called to look for the missing man, resulting in an extensive land and marine search and rescue operation, according to Richmond RCMP. He was found dead on Saturday.
There may be less traffic on the roads due to the pandemic, but that didn’t stop Richmond RCMP catching a catalogue of speeding drivers lately.
WorkSafe BC is investigating the incident, according to BC Ferries.
Another factor which aided last month’s ticketing spree was Richmond RCMP transitioning to the electronic ticketing system, which has been adopted in many parts of B.C.
An explosive disposal unit was called to the scene and discovered a possible grenade, which was seized and transported. According to Metro Vancouver Transit Police, the suspected grenade was spotted in a man’s grocery cart by the bus driver around 11 a.m.
“eTicketing has proven to be a valuable tool for our officers as it allows us a quicker turnaround when stopping offenders.
Considering the reduced number of vehicles travelling along the roadways, the RCMP said these were “significant numbers.” The police said they were pleased with the community’s diligence in reporting unsafe driving behaviour to them, which shows people are “as concerned (about) road safety” as they are.
Bridgeport Station was closed down after a TransLink driver reported seeing a grenade on his bus Sunday morning.
“Please remember that speed is a major issue with respect to road safety which is something we all want — our roads to be safer,” said Cpl. Peter Somerville, NCO Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit.
This included five impoundments for excessive speeding, and one Notice of Driving Prohibition.
“This is extremely distressing news for all of us and our hearts go out to his family and friends, to our employees who work at the fleet maintenance unit alongside this person and to our entire BC Ferries’ family,” said Deborah Marshall, spokesperson for BC Ferries, in an email.
The Richmond RCMP confirmed they are investigating alongside WorkSafe BC.
The new system increases roadside efficient “dramatically,” according to police, offering clear and concise printouts that are virtually impervious to ink smearing due to inclement weather.
Over a seven-day period at the end of May, Richmond RCMP’s Road Safety Unit issued 138 violation tickets for speed-related infractions.
A5
During the time of the incident, trains were suspended at Bridgeport Station.
“This in turn gets motorists back on their way sooner and with less waiting. It also allows faster and easier resolutions for the motorist as eTickets can be paid online as opposed to going into a courthouse or ICBC branch office.
Canada Line riders were required to transfer at Marine Drive Station to switch trains heading to Vancouver International Airport or Brighouse Station.
“This is a good thing especially right now during this COVID-19 pandemic.”
The station’s bus loop was closed to vehicles and people at the time. — Valerie Leung/Richmond News

The stickers are similar in colour, size and shape to those issued by ICBC as part of its graduated licensing program. The L, N and R stickers include text identical to that on ICBCissued decals, for example, “building trust, driving confidence.” However, none of the stickers includes the ICBC logo or numbered code found on official signs. Geneva Lee said she spotted the four stickers while shopping at Aberdeen last Thursday, and they immediately raised an alarm — particularly the sticker imitating a disabled parking permit. “My high school teacher, who a lot of students know and love in Richmond, has a real disability that is not visible to the naked eye,” said Lee. “It pains me that he, as well as many other first-rate Asian individuals, will be unjustly affected by this and would have to fight to prove something that they’re not.”

Copycat ICBC driving stickers at Super Garage. Photo submitted ethnic stereotyping. When contacted last Friday by the News, a Super Garage employee said they sold the stickers because customers don’t like the magnetic ICBC decals, and prefer to have sticker ones. The employee confirmed the store no longer sells the “C” sticker. When the News asked the purpose of selling the stickers, the employee replied, “You can ask the customers,” before hanging up the phone, saying they were busy at the store. Joanna Linsangan, a spokesperson for ICBC, confirmed the agency had not issued the stickers. “We have sent out cease and desist letters in the past regarding signs bearing the likeness of our decals and we will do so again,” she said. — Kirsten Clarke/Richmond News

Ride-hailing drivers call for crackdown
Last year at this time, the taxi industry was calling foul on illegal riding-hailing services chauffeuring people around and taking a good chunk of its business. Now that at least one of those ride-hailing services is licenced to operate in Richmond, its drivers are calling time on those working for unlicensed app companies.
“I know a few people who are currently working for those illegal services. They are making money by driving customers around the city despite heavy government penalties. But what’s even more absurd is that some also applied for Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB),” said Richmondite Adam Liu, a driver with a licensed ride-hailing service. “That creates piles of unfairness for legal drivers who have been working their asses off to pay taxes and serve the local community at the same time,” added Liu. Liu is calling on the provincial government and related departments to crack down on the multiple Chinese ride-hailing apps that are still thriving in Richmond. “A driver working illegally can easily make hundreds of dollars daily, even during the COVID-19 crisis while most businesses
are suffering,” said Liu, adding that these operators have been dodging taxes from the government. Jay Zhang, another local driver, said he spent $1,000 obtaining a Class 4 driver’s license and did a criminal record check before signing up to become a driver.
However, businesses that produce ridinghailing apps that have not been approved for use in a municipality don’t require applicants to submit these documents, he added. “I understand that most drivers working for illegal platforms don’t have enough language ability to get a Class 4 driver’s license. But this situation creates a safety concern for customers,” said Zhang. Liu noted that those working for illegal services are primarily international students and immigrants with limited English skills. “No one wants to work illegally. Some drivers operating without licenses told me they have no other options but to survive. But these companies seem to take advantage of both their government and employees.” If a driver is caught, they will be charged, not the company they are working for. —Nono Shen/Richmond News

Imagine going to school at 13, and seeing a racial slur targeting your ethnic group written on a whiteboard. This is what happened to Daniella Jovanovic at
At the time, she didn’t tell anyone in authority at school, but it drove home the importance of educating students early about racism and respecting other people no matter what their background is. As a Black student attending school from kindergarten to Grade 12 in Richmond, Jovanovic never learned about the history of Black people in Canada, and this sparked her to write to the Richmond Board of Education asking for change.

Burnett secondary and the memory of it still upsets her almost a decade later.
On Wednesday, the board voted unanimously to advocate to the Ministry of Education for mandatory Black history instruction in schools, but they went one step further and decided to start a diversity and anti-racism working group across the district to address the issue within schools. The group will review policies and find gaps in the system, for example, in hiring practices and professional development. This was a motion from Trustee Sandra Nixon, but she pointed out conversations had already been taking place among school district senior staff, trustees and the community about the need to review issues around racism in schools, offering “both a challenge and an opportunity.” “As a school district, we need to take that oppor-

Maria Rantanen photo tunity and respond to that challenge and look at we are doing, what we need to do that we aren’t doing and what we might need to be doing differently to address racism however it is manifesting,” Nixon said at last week’s board meeting. The racial-slur incident was hurtful for Jovanovic, and she was curious where a student might have even learned the word. However, she said she believes education can root out racism early and combat xenophobic attitudes that some students might be picking up at home. “That’s another reason why it’s so important to talk about these issues in school, because I find in adulthood… it’s so difficult to change those views,” she said. “I think that’s why we have to start early.”
Her motivation is two-fold, she explained to the Richmond News: to educate others but also to make Black people understand they have always been valuable and contributing members of Canadian society. There were demonstrations in cities across the U.S., Canada and the world in reaction to the death of a Black man, George Floyd, in Minneapolis at the hands of police. On Saturday, La Toya Barrington is organizing a Black Lives Matter Chain Protest, starting at 1 p.m. at Brighouse Park and continuing down No. 3 Road. Barrington recently spoke at a rally in downtown Vancouver about her experiences growing up as a Black person, and she wants to raise awareness about racism in Canada.

Cop tells of racial abuse as a child covered in bruises.

A former Richmond Mountie is speaking out about how she grew up in the Lower Mainland surrounded and cornered by racism on a daily basis. Sgt. Veronica Fox told how she was born into a mixed-race family in the ‘80s while living as a youth in the Lower Mainland. Fox, who’s now based at the B.C. RCMP headquarters in Surrey, said growing up as a “Black kid” in this province “was not easy.” “I experienced isolation and racism on a daily basis. Elementary school was the worst,” said Fox. “My mother made countless trips to the principal’s office to address the bullying; I was moved to different schools. Nothing worked.” Fox said there was the “everyday name calling” and disrespect “concerning my different appearance. But there were other, darker incidents. One day, the police were called when two boys decided to practice martial arts on me,” she recalled, resulting in her legs
Fox was speaking as police forces across the country, continent and the world come under fierce scrutiny in the wake of protests sparked by the death of George Floyd, a Black man, at the hands of a white police officer in the U.S. When Fox decided to become a police officer, she said, for the first time in her life, she came to truly understand what it means to hold power. “I was suddenly granted the ability to take away someone’s liberty and the responsibility to utilize appropriate force,” said Fox. “I took this very seriously; I never wanted to forget what it was like to be my former, externally powerless self. “I believe these experiences have helped me become an empathetic cop.” More online at Richmond-News.com

Thirteen, self-published with Tellwell Talent, came from her love of reading books and is a story that follows a female soldier struggling to adapt and understand the emotional change in her life.

A Richmond dancer was looking for an escape in novel writing when she discovered an emotional turn in her story. Ameia Mikula-Noble, a dancer with the Richmond Academy of Dance, wasn’t intending to publish a book when she began writing down ideas and short chapters for fun in 2018.
Ameia Mikula-Noble
She told the Richmond News that although the writing started off as a form of entertainment, she found that the protagonist began to reflect how people in the world can sometimes take emotions and feelings for granted. “We understand what anger or happiness feels like, but for (the character) and even for some people in this world, they struggle with connecting with their emotions,” said Mikula-Noble.

Despite her busy schedule, the 16-year-old found time to write “bits and pieces” of Thirteen as a way to relax while continuing her daily life as a high school student and a competitive dancer.
“I could sometimes pretend I was in (the book’s) world where nothing else mattered, and although that sounds cliché that is what happened,” said Mikula-Noble. When asked if she will continue novel writing, she said a second book was possible. “I’ve started thinking about (writing) a second book, but that’s just a thought for now,” said Mikula-Noble. For the time being, her focus is to finish Grade 11 at Crofton House School, before attending the Juilliard Summer Intensives dance training in June.

Dog owner’s ditch fear “I reached down to try and grab him, but then I fell in,” laughed Walters, adding that there was about two feet or so of ditch water.
Alan Campbell ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Lee Walters can laugh about it now. Last Thursday afternoon, when she was thrashing around while submerged in slime and ditch water, was another matter. The 73-year-old was walking her two little dogs, Nico and Ginny, with a friend on Gibbons Drive — just east of Westminster Highway and No. 1 Road — when Nico slipped his collar and made a B-line for a dog in a nearby garden. What Nico didn’t see, due to about three feet of unkempt grass and weeds, was the five-foot deep drainage ditch that runs in front of many older detached homes in Richmond. The tiny 10-year-old Pomeranian-terrier cross duly disappeared into the ditch and was flailing around, paddling from side to side in a vain attempt to get out.
“It was a straight side. I had no grip. My friend offered to help, but I was afraid we would both end up in the ditch. “I was submerged, flat to the ground, for a moment or two. Although it seemed like longer. “It was so slimy and muddy, it was really difficult to get to my feet. I reached out and got my dog and pushed him up.” Walters eventually got out with the help of her friend, completely soaked from head to toe in muddy water and slime, but without a scratch. “Funnily enough, the top hairs of (Nico) were dry,” Walters joked. “Hopefully this story will cheer a couple of people up. It wasn’t funny when my dog was struggling to get out of the ditch, though. “I knew there might be some storm
water down there, but my dog certainly didn’t. All he saw was another dog in a garden, at the other side of the ditch. He’s small, so all he could see was the greenery.” All joking aside, Walters said the overgrown ditches is an accident waiting to happen, and questioned who was responsible for keeping the ditches mowed. “I’m not sure if it’s the city or the homeowner who should be doing this?” she said. “It was a bit of a freak accident, but it could have easily been avoided if the grass was cut. “I look back at what happened…and think of the headlines that could have been: ‘Local senior dies in ditch trying to save dog.’” A spokesperson for the City of Richmond confirmed that, as per Bylaw no. 7174, it is the “homeowner’s responsibility to maintain the boulevard to the road edge.”

One of Richmond’s longest running bakeries, Broadmoor Bakery, is closing after serving the community for more than 61 years. The independent Dutch-style bakery, at Broadmoor Shopping Centre at No. 3 and Williams roads, changed hands five years ago but continued to be a favourite for Richmondites. According to a post on its Facebook page in the early hours of Tuesday, the bakery said it wanted to “…sadly announce our last business day is Saturday, June 27th, 2020. Farewell, my friends!” Bakery owner Tom Hsu told the Richmond News that the city’s changing demographic, people’s diets and the pandemic all played a part in his decision to call it a day. “Richmond has gone through a lot of changes in those 61 years and I think the demand for a Dutch bakery has been going down for many years as the Dutch immigrants moved away from the area,” said Hsu. “They’ve moved to places like Abbottsford and Langley. We have some members of the senior (Dutch) commu-

nity who still come in, but it’s like once a week. Even those customers are fading away, moving out of Richmond. There is no new generation of customers. “Also, people’s eating habits have changed, they’re eating less bread. We had lots of customers from different ethnicities, but they’re just eating less bread and bakery. Society has changed. Lots of things change.” Hsu said he always got a rush of orders around Christmas but he “needed more steady customers” to keep it going. And he said the fact that his fiveyear lease is up for renewal later this year made the decision to close timely. “We had to make a decision to continue for another five years or not,” Hsu
However, it may not be an absolute end for Broadmoor Bakery, as Hsu harbours the thought of opening up somewhere else, but not as it used to be. “We still own the name. So we may try to open up again elsewhere…Maybe not retail, maybe wholesale or made to order,” he said. “I think it will depend on the pandemic situation and how that all goes. We still have all the recipes.”

TransLink has launched a campaign aimed at promoting the use of face coverings and non-medical masks on Metro Vancouver’s transit system. As part of the “Wearing is Caring” campaign, more than 15,000 TransLink branded masks will be handed out at key transit hubs over coming weeks, including in Richmond.
The @TransLinkNews Twitter account will share the location and times on the day of each giveaway. TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond said the transit authority is recommending customers wear a face covering or mask while on transit or waiting for transit, if they are able to do so. “If we can get to a point where most people on transit are wearing a face covering or mask, then it will be a safer experience for everyone.” The campaign will also see system-wide posters and decals installed to promote the use of face coverings and non-surgical masks.
TransLink’s mask-wearing bus is part of the new campaign. the campaign. Branded masks will be made available for purchase through the TransLink store later in the summer. Ridership on the rise TransLink has seen a major spike in systemwide boardings, which it says is a sign that transit ridership is beginning to recover. During the week of May 31 to June 6, there were about 2.6 million boardings across the entire transit system. This was an 85 per cent jump from the second week of April, which, at about 1.4 million boardings, had the lowest ridership levels during the pandemic. However, ridership is only at 33 per cent the level recorded last year. — With files from Kirsten Clarke

Hamilton High Street is a dynamic new seniors community If there is anything the coronavirus quarantine has taught us it’s this: we need each other. But we also need to be safe, especially seniors. How can we be safe, but not lonely and isolated? British Columbia has been touted as a model of how to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus. In Metro Vancouver, the city of Richmond had the lowest number of Covid-19 cases. And, throughout the entire province, none of the deaths from the virus were in independent senior living communities. “Seniors, our pioneers, did the groundwork for what we enjoy today. We want to keep everyone active and healthy,” says Rob Howard, the president of New Coast Lifestyles.

New Coast Lifestyles is in the final stages of opening Hamilton High Street, a resort-inspired development for seniors in one of Richmond’s up-and-coming neighbourhoods.

PPE clogging pipes

the middle of a pandemic, said Stewart,
Kirsten Clarke KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Gloves, face masks and disposable wipes can all be used to defend against COVID-19, but they’re wreaking havoc on Metro Vancouver’s sewage system. The spike in personal protective equipment (PPE) and wipes being flushed down toilets since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic is clogging pipes and causing treatment problems at the region’s five wastewater plants, including the two in Richmond at Iona and the end of Gilbert Road. “Most of these products are quite strong, and they simply don’t dissolve in water like toilet paper does, and as a result, they clog up pumps,” Richard Stewart, chair of Metro Vancouver’s Liquid Waste Committee and Mayor of Coquitlam, told the Richmond News. “The so-called flushable wipes are notorious for clogging up pumps,” said Stewart. “And you can imagine what happens when rubber gloves, latex gloves, masks get put in the toilet and flushed. They seem to disappear, but they make a mess in the plumbing, the pipes and the pumps.” Individual workers then have to go in and dismantle pumps to remove raw sewage in order to get at the clog of PPE and wipes — in
“If someone thinks their PPE is contaminated, the most selfish thing they can possibly do is leave it for someone else to deal with.” Those clogs also have a financial impact on taxpayers and homeowners, said Stewart. “There’s no question in my mind that taxpayers are going to feel this as just one more of the hits involved with this pandemic — financial burdens that in this case could have been entirely avoided.” Plumbing calls to condo and townhouse projects are also on the rise, he said, as the first kilometre of pipe that the wastewater goes through is private, and owned by residents — leaving the strata or individual residents on the hook for thousands of dollars of repairs. Stewart cited Tuesday’s report on strata corporations, noting they face enormous insurance challenges, many of which are related to water.

PPE that has been littered on streets and other public places, as has been seen in Richmond, is also a plague as those items can end up in storm drains which empty into creeks, the Fraser River or the ocean. “I’ve seen latex gloves that have been chewed up by traffic…and those bits of plastic will end up in fish, and we know that’s an enormous problem for birds of prey and the entire food chain in the ocean,” said Stewart.

OBITUARIES FREDERICKSON, Edith (nee Humphreys) April 30, 1941 - June 7, 2020
CAIRNS, Julia (Julie) Mary (née Peters) It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Julia (Julie) Mary Cairns (née Peters) on June 3, 2020 at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, BC. Julie fought a long and determined struggle with cancer for the past 9 years. In her final days she was comforted by the presence of her husband Doug and daughter Ackerley, both of whom were by her side as she passed. Julie is survived by her brother Terry Peters and his wife Lyn, their son Luke Peters and his wife Jen as well as Ackerley’s husband Tyson and their 2 children Sidney and Gene. Julie’s main source of strength in life was her love of family and especially the joy she derived from her 2 grandsons, Sidney and Gene. Julie was born on October 12, 1948 in Kent, England. She emigrated to Richmond, BC in 1955 and graduated from Richmond High School in 1966. She then spent a few years back in England, eventually returning to Richmond in 1969 to begin a career with CP Air, where she made many friends and met Doug, whom she married in 1975. The birth of Ackerley completed her family in 1978. After leaving CPAir Julie continued to work at the Minoru Residence in Richmond, before retiring to focus on family, health and travel. Travel was always a top priority for Julie and she and Doug explored much of the world whilst on their extensive journeys. One of her most cherished memories was of their 2010 safari in Kenya and Tanzania. Julie was well known for her love of animals, and many cats and dogs shared her life over the years. Julie shared her love of pets by volunteering with her last one, Inka, at Richmond General Hospital as a therapy dog, visiting many wards. Julie kept her family and friends very close to her heart and will be remembered for her unique personality and willingness to discuss, in a colourful way, topics of the day. A celebration of Julie’s life will be held at a to be determined later date, when as many family and friends as possible will be able to attend and share their memories of Julie. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the BC Cancer Agency or Delta Hospice Society.
CHRISTIAN, Paige Elizabeth October 3, 1980 - June 4, 2020 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Paige A loving daughter, sister, mother, grand daughter, niece, cousin and friend. Survived by her Mum Jane Green, step-dad, Danny Green, brother Dustin Christian, her 93 yr old Grandpa Bob and her beautiful daughter Isabelle Vallee, Issie’s dad Sylas Vallee, father Warren Christian, (Brenda Dowling) and sister Shelby Dowling (Jamie Botkin). Paige was preceded in death by her son baby Brodie Lipsett, nanny Joan Drummond and cousin Chris Drummond. Also surviving Paige are many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and good friends. We also would like to thank Paige’s two best friends, Louise Colwell and Jackie Schelpe. They were there for her ‘til the bitter end.” We could not have done this without you both.
We are also grateful to Istvan File. Thank you for all the joy you bought to Paige’s life these last few months. Who would have thought our girl would have loved fishing so much ... Most of all Paige loved and adored her children Issie and Brodie. They were her world! Thank you to all the nurses and staff at PAH Foundation lodge hospice. Your kindness and compassion was unwavering. Goodbye Beautiful Girl We will never be the same. Her life cut short, but no more pain... We will be announcing a memorial at a later date.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Trudy Kostovich, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Trudy will be fondly remembered for her love of family, which also included the four−legged members. She was always happiest when there was a dog in the mix. Trudy is survived by her dear husband of 62 years, Orest; her devoted son, Max (Heather); her beloved grandsons, Tim (Noona), and Zach; and her sisters, June and Gerry. Trudy was predeceased by her cherished daughter, Marcia; her mother, Gladys; and her little best friend, Misty. No service by request. Those who desire may make donations in memory of Trudy to their favourite charity.
Edith was born in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. The family moved a few years later, eventually settling in Richmond, where she attended Garden Citty Elementary and graduated from Richmond High h in ‘59. Behind Edith’s calm demeanor lay many adven ntures of growing up in Richmond. These stories would be shared with a wry grin as she shocked her audience. The most audacious of which seemed to include her brother John, who was also responsible for introducing his co-worker, Ray Frederickson, to his “kid sister.” Edith went to UBC and became a teacher in the early ‘60s at McKay Elementary. She loved teaching and had fond memories of her students and work in education. Edith and Ray were married in ‘61, and forged life-long friendships around Richmond where they lived, including the Cora Brown neighbourhood, on Finlayson and Alexandra Roads, and in South Arm. Edith was pragmatic and always had a project on the go, whether hosting a big dinner, canning epic proportions of food, or using her adept organizational skills in planning the family camping holidays. Edith started work with the Canadian Mental Health Association in the ‘80s, eventually becoming Executive Director. As she did in her teaching, Edith worked hard to advocate, and improve services and caring for those in the community. In retirement Edith joined the RASS board, tutored adults in reading, met up with fellow RHS grads, and enjoyed more time with her grandchildren, and travels with Ray. There are many traditions Edith infused into our lives and which she will be remembered by; the seemingly effortless feasts she put on, the Christmas stockings, and extensive Christmas decorating assisted by grandkids. Her legendary Edie bars, fudge pudding, and cheese and tomato buns reign sacred in Frederickson family lore. Edith had an unwavering sense of what was needed by family and loved ones; a quiet ear, kind words, and unwavering support. Thank you for leaving such an immense legacy and wealth of love and memories. We miss you. Edith’s family would like to thank the exceptional staff and care at Richmond’s Salvation Army Rotary Hospice who helped make her last days a true celebration of a life she loved and shared with so many. A Celebration of Edith’s Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation in her memory.

SHURY, Alice May 26, 1941 − June 10, 2020 The Shury family is saddened to announce that the world has lost a beautiful teacher − a teacher by profession, but more importantly, a teacher to all of us in this lesson of life. Alice Shury, at the age of 79, peacefully entered her life in eternity on June 10th at 1:55 pm in Richmond, BC. Alice received a call from her Highest Principal, letting her know that her memory will remain, but her labour on earth is done. Dementia took Alice’s mind in these last few years, but she is remembered as the brightest crayon in the box. Her Principal knows that while her colouring on earth may be done, her pictures will live on and her children and grandchildren are left with a task − to follow in Alice’s beautiful shades in the ways she taught by example. As a teacher would say to her students, please come to circle time, where everyone is included and no one will be left out, Alice lived her life. Love was her guide and kindness was always her response. Alice lived with a deep sensitivity to others, always offering a listening ear and a caring heart. Her life was balanced with laughter and sensitivity, and unconditional love is her legacy. Alice is survived by her husband, Harold, who lovingly cared for her as Alzheimer’s shadowed her mind; her children, Dale (Sylvia, wife, and children, Alyssa (Justin), Sam, Gabriella, and Shalom); Kyle (Megan, wife, and children, Lexy, Bella, and Damon); and many friends and family, too many to list, but not forgotten. In memory of Alice, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anne’s Anglican Church at 4071 Francis Road, Richmond, V7C 1J8, phone: (604) 277−9626.
