Health crises not equal into the economy when it’s down and restrict spending when it’s up.

If ever there was a time to google “Keynesian economics,” this would be it.

With millions of dollars getting pushed out government doors to individuals, businesses, charities and various other organizations, one might ask, “Where the heck did all this come from?” and “What about that old deficit?”

He talks about “aggregate demand,” meaning you need enough people buying stuff to keep the economy running. And if they can’t earn that money by selling their labour on the “free market,” find another way to give it to them.

Even Conservatives, who claim to be deficit-averse, are calling on governments to keep the cash flowing — albeit to business groups, in particular.

Basically, Keynesian economics argues that when people are given the resources to cover their needs, they will participate in the economy. That participation strengthens the economy and a stronger economy gives people the opportunity to work and become a net contributor.

As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau put it in one of his morning addresses, “we had money set aside for a rainy day… well, it’s raining.”

Why is it this concept seems to be so heartily embraced in the midst of this crisis, but so dismissed in others?

It’s a nice line, but makes it sound like we just had a pile of cash sitting in the proverbial sock drawer waiting to be dug out. Perhaps more helpful, but less catchy, is a reference to John Maynard Keynes, the British economist who revolutionized economic thinking in the 1930s.

Keynes argued that a capitalist economy will inevitably have ups and downs, and a society can best weather those if its government pumps money

So, here’s my question.

For a decade now, health authorities and frontline workers have made essentially the same argument regarding the opioid crisis, yet there’s certainly been no Emergency Response Benefit for addicts.

Just as now, experts have long argued that if people (addicts) are given the resources they require to manage their needs, they will ultimately become a net contributor to society.

Of course, on the level of sympathies, an addict is generally a few notches below a temporarily laid-off worker.

But even if we take moral judgment out of the equation, there is the economics.

Currently, the financial costs to society incurred by the opioid crisis is huge. It drains our hospitals, courts and police services far greater, I would argue, than the expense of providing housing and a clean drug supply. And while that case has been made repeatedly, it hasn’t really registered — until now.

Recently, Vancouver has been given temporary approval from both the provincial and federal governments to ensure people with addictions are given prescriptions for their drugs.

This allowance is being made to keep people from going out to score drugs on the street, which is not good for social distancing, and ending up in hospital because the junk they bought was tainted with fentanyl, which is not good for an already stretched medical system.

So, if the moral and ethical reasons to take the opioid crisis seriously don’t register, let’s at least consider the practical ones.

If providing for basic needs makes economic sense in one medical crisis, why not another?

Neighbours ‘disgusted’ by axing

Residents of Aintree Crescent in Shellmont are “disgusted” with the illegal cutting down of two trees on a property on their street.

The work at 10571 Aintree Cres. began on Friday, according to Kate Dickieson, after a man with a chainsaw was dropped off at the property, which is undergoing construction work.

Dickieson said she and some of her neighbours confronted the man, but he wouldn’t identify himself or say who told him to cut the trees.

“The guy had torn the yellow stickers (stop work orders) off the trees and hid them in the brush before he started to cut,” said Dickieson, who added that she first contacted the city about the issue Friday.

Lisa Craker, also a resident of the neighbourhood, said the man left — getting into a car waiting nearby — after sawing off five or six branches from one tree, as the conversa-

tion with neighbours was getting heated.

All the man told the crowd of neighbours was that his boss had told him to cut the trees and he had put the stop work orders in the bushes “so that they wouldn’t blow away,” said Craker.

“This clearly shows the guy had knowledge of what those orders meant,” she said, adding they were posted back on the trees by some of the neighbours after the man left.

While the weekend was quiet, Dickieson said that she heard the sound of a chainsaw again Tuesday morning and saw branches falling. She again contacted the city.

“By the time I came (outside), the trees were down,” she said. “Just a terrible, terrible mess. They were some beautiful trees. A few

of our neighbours were out and we’re all disgusted with what’s happened.”

Pictures submitted to the Richmond News, taken Tuesday, show the man sawing one of the trees, which still has the stop work order attached to it.

The bigger tree, said Craker, was cut “without much care or caution,” and fell covering most of the street. The man then took off, again leaving in a car that was waiting for him at the corner of Shell Road.

A City of Richmond spokesperson said the city is “extremely unhappy” with what happened, and has fowarded the matter to its legal department.

Fines aren’t enough Craker said one of her neighbours called

the police, and both Richmond RCMP and the city came by to speak to everyone. And while they were told there would be an investigation and all permits have been pulled, Craker isn’t sure that will stop anything similar from happening in the future.

“With owners and developers so willing to go against the bylaws and laws, and so willing to just pay a fine, this behaviour is never going to stop. What’s a $10,000 fine to someone already spending $1 million on a property?”

In addition to losing permits for demolition, Craker said she believes the property owner should be made to pay stiffer fines and ordered to replant the trees they cut — if not double that amount — given the impact the loss of the trees has to the neighbourhood and environment. It also allows the developer to build a “mega home with wall and gate.”

This type of scenario is also harmful to Richmond’s neighbourhoods, said Craker.

“We are losing the ‘neighbour’ in our neighbourhoods,” she said. “These properties are being paved over and surrounded by walls and gates...Owners are letting properties and older homes deteriorate to the point it’s not worth putting any money into renovating, so the only option left is demolishing...This is not progress and these changes are not for the betterment of our neighbourhoods.”

Property taxes in Richmond won’t be due until Sept. 2 and they will be two per cent lower than originally budgeted.

This is to provide relief for residents and businesses amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

City council will ask the provincial government to make a ruling to allow all municipalities in B.C. to defer property taxes, but if it doesn’t, Richmond will invoke the community charter.

“We’re going to do it ourselves in any case,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie at council on Tuesday evening.

The two-per-cent decrease will mean the cancellation of a one-per-cent tax increase earmarked for capital reserves. Furthermore, the planned hiring of 12 new RCMP officers and five RCMP municipal staff will be put on hold.

Plans for a community centre in City Centre North will also be delayed because of the property tax reduction.

Almost 70 per cent of the city’s anticipated $334 million in revenue for 2020 are from taxes and levies.

About half the property tax bill doesn’t go directly to the city but covers things like school tax and Metro Vancouver levies.

While the COVID-19 pandemic is taking a toll on businesses, the crisis is also having an impact on municipal revenues.

Civic facilities such as pools, arenas, the Oval and community centres remain closed with no revenue from programs, but other sectors, including gaming and tourism, could also have an impact on the city’s bottom line.

In its 2020 budget, the city estimated it would receive $14.5 million this year in casino revenue — on average about $1.2 million per month — representing four per cent of its total revenues. But River Rock Casino has been closed since March 15.

And not only is the casino closed, so is the River Rock hotel, one of three hotels in Richmond that was recently closed, as international travel and conferences are cancelled amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Besides the large-scale impact of travel restrictions on the tourism businesses — estimated to be worth $2 billion annually with 3.5 million overnight stays in Richmond in 2017 — the hotel tax generates income for the city. This was about $6.5 million in 2018, of which one-third, about $2.15 million, went to the city. (The other two-thirds goes to Tourism Richmond.)

As for closed civic facilities, the city’s budget anticipated $12 million in annual revenues in 2020 including recreation, arts and cultural programs — 84 per cent of this would have been from fees.

Nevertheless, Brodie said, he’s confident the city will manage if the crisis continues for two to three months or even longer.

“I think we have the resources to weather the storm — depending on a lot of things, including how long it goes on,” he said.

A portable bathroom will be available for use around the clock at Lang Park for homeless people.

But much will depend on what tools the province gives the city, for example, running a deficit, borrowing or dipping into reserves, he added.

While 35 bathrooms across the city, including three with showers, have been left open for use with extended hours during the COVID-19 crisis, none were open 24/7.

A group of Lower Mainland mayors sent a letter to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing on March 23 asking for some ways to deal with the situation, Brodie said; they are waiting for a response.

Last week, Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart appealed to the province for financial relief, asking for $200 million to help that city during the COVID-19 crisis.

Stewart said, Vancouver would have a deficit of $189 million if the crisis continued until December, equivalent to a 24-per-cent property tax increase.

Even a return to normal in May would mean a $61 million budget deficit for Vancouver.

Homeless advocates have been pushing for more public sanitary facilities since civic amenities have closed and fast-food restaurants have limited access because of provincial health orders to ensure physical distancing.

“I am pleased to see the city has heeded our call for a 24/7 portable toilet in City Centre at Lang Park,” said De Whalen, chair of the Richmond Poverty Response Committee (PRC), in an email.

It’s looking like festival season is withering on the vine.

The 75th annual Salmon Festival — one of the biggest festivals in Richmond, scheduled for Canada Day in Steveston — will not take place this year.

This is not the only event that has been cancelled because of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. Early in the crisis, the Cherry Blossom Festival at Garry Point Park was also nixed.

Since then, events small and large — from community book sales to Gateway Theatre productions to sports events — have been cancelled as social distancing measures force people to stay at home and avoid large gatherings.

Cancelling the Steveston Salmon Festival wasn’t an easy decision to make, said Alan Sakai, board president of the Steveston Community Society. The board decision, however, was unanimous.

While all other city-organized festival dates remain in place, there is a lot of uncertainty whether they will actually go ahead, explained city spokesperson Clay Adams — everything is being reviewed and reconsidered by major events staff.

“The challenge is we don’t know what the timelines are for COVID-19,” Adams said.

While social distancing rules might be relaxed, no one knows at this point if larger gatherings will continue to be banned, he added.

...Cancelling this year’s event was determined to be the most responsible decision to make at this time.

The city would have kicked in $250,000 for the Steveston Salmon Festival.

Planning for the festival takes place all year long, but the society is now trying to come up with alternative ways to celebrate Canada Day during a pandemic.

City’s Japan trip cancelled

Couns. Bill McNulty and Harold Steves won’t be travelling to Japan on a council-sponsored mission this month.

The trip, postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19, was meant to be an inperson discussion about inviting the Kaiwo Maru tall ship to Richmond’s

Maritime Festival in 2023 to celebrate the city’s 50th anniversary of its sistercity relationship with Wakayama.

McNulty said the Japan trip, bugeted at $40,000, was cancelled fairly early in the crisis and is far from his mind. However, depending on how the situation plays out, it might be re-

scheduled to November or next year.

“It’s not foremost in our minds — foremost in my mind is community safety.”

While opposed by some, the trip would be crucial to securing the ship because everything in Japan is done based on relationships, said McNulty.

The two councillors would have brought along details for the event like tide schedules and fuel availability.

“You don’t get anything from the Japanese unless you have that level of detail,” McNulty said.

Thrasher dies, 67

One of Richmond’s most talented performers, Sibel Thrasher, has died, age 67.

“I gave her a call to see if she could help us out,” recalled Whalen, referring to the centre’s upcoming 35th anniversary fundraiser, which had a Great Gatsby, Roarin’ Twenties theme.

Born Dec. 12, 1952 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Thrasher began performing professionally at age six, before making her name in jazz and R&B. She recorded in New York with legendary artist Roy Ayers, and in Canada with the late Long John Baldry and Linton Garner.

Thrasher performed with The Platters (a doo wop group from L.A.) in the U.S., Japan and the Philippines and travelled as a jazz and R&B singer in the cruise ship industry.

She came to B.C. to appear alongside The Platters in 1981 and never left.

“I just fell in love with B.C.,” Thrasher told the Richmond News back in 2011.

Along with her stage and musical achievements, Thrasher starred in movie, television and commercial productions.

Thrasher also found time to volunteer at a number of fundraising events in Richmond.

Indeed, it was her willingness to help that

Case in point was a Sunday in Garden City Park, when a Mountie noticed the licence plate on Whalen’s car had expired. “I was horrified and said I’d get it sorted straight away,” explained Whalen.

“He said I wasn’t driving anywhere and pointed out I had three hours before I’d get a ticket. Then, out of the blue, Sibel called... she said she’d be right there.

“She was all dressed up in her velour suit, her nails done, her extensions in. She took me to the mall and waited until I’d got my licence renewed.

“I’ve called her my guardian angel ever since.”

A judge has ruled that the building permits for two homes in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) shouldn’t have been cancelled by the City of Richmond as the properties were in the process of being preloaded.

In two recent judgments, B.C. Supreme Court Justice David Crerar said the city’s decision to cancel the permits of two properties, both in the ALR, was “unreasonable,” given the definition of construction in Richmond’s building bylaw.

The two cases — launched by a Belcarra couple and a corporation in March 2019 — were both caught up in the saga of “monster houses” on the ALR, and a new bylaw limiting ALR houses to 400 square metres, which was passed by city council in December 2018. Richmond’s house size bylaw was followed by the province’s ban on ALR houses larger than 500 square metres in February 2019.

Both petitioners argued the decision to cancel the permits was based on external politics, rather than what was outlined in the building bylaw.

In March 2017, Minster Enterprises Ltd.,

whose principal is Tie Jun Li, applied for building permits for a five-acre property at 14160 Westminster Hwy. with the city.

The initial permit was extended to March 2018.

However, those extended permits were cancelled in September 2018 after the city claimed that no construction had taken place during the 180 days the permits were active.

That was also the case for Fu Li Yu and Jing Yang of Belcarra, who had purchased their five-acre property at 8551 No. 5 Rd. in 2016, planning to build a single-family house nearly 13,500 square feet in size.

The city first issued building permits for their property in August 2017, set to expire in February 2018.

They were told by the city’s inspection manager that their permits were cancelled in October 2018.

The city cancelled the permits because, it argued, neither property had begun construction on the houses — permits are given an expiration date if there is no construction activity — according to court documents.

But the judge ruled extensive work was being done on the properties, specifically soil densification.

A man alleges he was discriminated against almost daily during the two-year period he worked at Quilchena Golf and Country Club, according to a submission to the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal.

Manuel Conceicao claims he was called an “old man” and “old China man” throughout his employment as a cook at the club — at 3551 Granville Ave. — from October 2015 until he was fired August 2017.

Conceicao, 63 at the time of dismissal, filed a discrimination complaint with the tribunal against the club, its head chef Darren Szeto and general manager Holden Yap, alleging they discriminated against him based on his age, contrary to the Human Rights Code. The club denies the allegations and applied to have the complaint dismissed without a hearing.

B.C. Human Rights Tribunal member Norman Trerise has denied the club’s application, however he noted he also has “concerns about whether it is appropriate for this matter to proceed to a hearing,” and ruled that both parties need to make further submissions.

In his written decision on the matter, Trerise outlines some of the comments Conceicao alleges Szeto and Yap made to him.

“Mr. Conceicao alleges that almost every

Conceicao also claimed he was dismissed after speaking to a friend — who was a member of the club — while working, according to the written decision, and claimed that friend had asked to speak with him.

“Mr. Conceicao says that…he was reprimanded by Mr. Yap for speaking with members of the club, and that because of his inappropriate actions, he was suspended effective immediately,” reads the decision.

Conceicao claims his age was a factor in the treatment of him — the focus of his discrimination complaint. The complaint did not include issues of race, such as being called a “China man,” according to the decision.

The club said Conceicao wasn’t fired because of his age, but rather his “egregious workplace conduct” the day before he was dismissed, which allegedly included shouting, ignoring instructions by Szeto, the head chef, and “disparaging the club.”

“They (the club) say the allegation of using such ageist or racist comments is fabricated and entirely untrue,” reads the decision.

RAPS asks for help with kittens A Richmond-based animal charity is asking the public to dig deep after rescuing dozens of kittens and cats from a hoarding situation.

A Richmond resident is hitting out after coming across the smouldering remnants of a boozy campfire in the middle of a wooded area on the West Dyke Trail.

It was there that Martin, to his disgust, found smoke still emanating from a campfire that was surrounded by dozens of empty beer cans.

“There it was. A campfire, still burning, with lots of make-shift seats, in the middle of the woods!” Martin told the Richmond News, adding that there have clearly been parties going on, likely with little physical distancing.

“It’s bad enough that they are not following the rules (during the pandemic) about keeping a safe distance, but do they have to burn the place down as well?”

“I called the police and let them know. Hopefully they might send a patrol or two up this way,” he added.

City threatens ‘hefty’ fines for littering The City of Richmond is threatening to hand out “hefty” fines to people caught littering masks, gloves and sanitary wipes.

“There is a serious issue with used masks, single-use gloves and wipes being littered and improperly disposed in Richmond,” reads a release from the city.

“This is unacceptable. We need to do better as a community.”

If you are out in the community, do not litter, said the city.

Instead, the items should be placed in plastic bags, which you can carry with you. Then, tie the bag securely so there are no loose items and put in the garbage.

Those items should not be placed in recycling bins.

“You are placing others at risk by not properly disposing of items that could be contaminated, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” added the city release.

“You have an important role to be responsible and courteous to others in the community, especially our waste collection frontline workers, by disposing of these materials properly. Do your part to keep others safe.”

The sight of dirty, germ-infested face masks and rubber gloves strewn throughout parks, alongside roads and outside grocery stores is something many Richmond residents have taken issue with, expressing their disgust on social media.

Some Richmond parents have expressed their shock at having to pay daycare charges for April and May, even though their children are not attending.

They’ve since been told they will receive a partial credit, but that still doesn’t comply with government directives.

Thirty-nine parents whose children have temporarily withdrawn from Richmond Star Education, a licensed childcare centre in South Arm, have co-signed a letter urging the centre to give them either a full refund or at least full credit for April and May. Teddy Zhou, along with seven other parents whose children attend the centre, told the Richmond News via video conference that most of the children stopped going to the daycare in midMarch, following the federal government’s announcement recommending people stay home as much as possible.

According to Zhou, the parents paid a three-month tuition fee ($1,700 to $1,800 per child/month in early March). Many have since reached out to the daycare staff in hopes of finding a solution but initially received no reply.

“We called them various times a day

and multiple times in a row. We even went to the school for help, but they used excuses to turn us away,” said Zhou.

However, on March 31 at 10:30 p.m., all the parents received an email from the daycare claiming that people who submit written notice to the daycare before April 1 were eligible to get a full credit for April and May. Otherwise, they can only get 50-percent credit in April and a full credit in May, according to Zhou.

“It’s unfair that we were given only an hour before midnight to respond to the email. Many parents told teachers in person before April. But these ‘notices’ don’t count according to the school,” said Zhou, adding that many parents were shocked when they woke up on April 1 and saw a letter from the daycare sitting in their email boxes.

The daycare claims they “comply with” the government policy.

The daycare’s administrator told the News she had been waiting since mid-March for further guidelines from the government, because the policy wasn’t “solid and concrete” back at that time.

She noted that parents who notified the school in writing before April 1 will receive full credits for both April and May. Those who did not reply before April 1 will get a 50-per-cent credit for April and a full credit for May.

However, some parents told the News they would rather get a refund than a credit, and according to the Ministry of Children and Family Development, that’s what they are entitled to.

The government website posted a document on March 26 which states families who choose to temporarily withdraw their child and notified the facility on or before the 15th of the month should receive a partial refund or a future credit at the provider’s discretion for that month, “however, the facility must not charge them any fee for the following month if they remain absent,” states the ministry document.

Meanwhile, other childcare facilities appear to not be charging parents.

A statement from the CEFA Early Learning School, another Richmond daycare operator, tells parents tuition fees will be paused for April if parents decide to keep their child at home.

She also confirmed that she sent out a notice to parents on March 31 to see who planned to temporarily withdraw their children from April onwards.

“And your child’s space will be secured and guaranteed with our school for the month of May 2020,” states the notice.

“The letter said you have to email me because I don’t know who decided to temporarily withdraw. I needed to count numbers to tell the government how many spaces we can offer.”

“Many families face income loss due to the pandemic. The prepaid tuition means a lot for many parents in a time of crisis,” said Zhou.

Family court orders stand even during the COVID-19 crisis, according to a B.C. provincial judge, but common sense should prevail and there should be no risk to the child.

This was the opinion from Judge Wilson Lee in a family matter where one parent alleges the other parent didn’t return a child, despite an alternating week schedule.

Lee referenced a similar case from an Ontario court where a judge, Justice A. Pazaratz, stated the health, safety and well-being of children is the top priority, but family relationships “cannot be put on hold indefinitely without risking serious emotional harm and upset.” The Ontario judge added that children need both parents especially in these times.

However, Pazaratz said sometimes parents will have to forego their time with a child, for example, if a parent needs to self-isolate.

Furthermore, if a parent’s lifestyle or behaviour, for example, failing to practise social distancing, raises concerns, parent-child contact will have to be reconsidered. The judge added there would be “zero tolerance” for reckless exposure to COVID-19.

Chamber: Business climate ‘extreme’ sive travel restrictions in place to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Rental assistance for business, the deferment of property taxes and the waiving of the employee health tax (not just deferment) are the key asks in a letter the Richmond Chamber of Commerce sent recently to the B.C. Minister of Finance, Carole James.

The head of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce describes the current business climate as “extreme,” with upheaval on a scale no one could have predicted.

Seventy-nine per cent of Richmond businesses surveyed by the chamber have seen a decline in sales and 40 per cent have had either layoffs, reduction in hours or have closed temporarily because of the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent physical distancing measures ordered by the province.

For Richmond Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Matt Pitcairn, however, the most discouraging statistic in the survey — conducted about two weeks ago — is the 54 per cent of Richmond businesses who forecast a slow economic rebound because of insufficient global economic activity or the inability for their customers to make purchases in the future.

While many businesses have a rainy-day fund to tide them over a rough patch, this is a situation like no other, Pitcairn said.

“I don’t think there are many textbooks that address the magnitude of this situation,” Pitcairn said.

For any sized business, it would be hard to prepare for a crisis of this scale, he added, especially because no one knows how long it will last.

The survey was conducted between March 26 and April 1 by the BC Chambers of Commerce.

Making hand sanitizer part of ‘social responsibility’ in crisis Interest was overwhelming at a trade show Segal attended, even before the health crisis esclated.

Two Richmond companies have started producing hand sanitizer in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for higher hygiene standards.

Darry Segal decided to switch his company over to hand sanitizer production when he was sitting at a traffic light at No. 4 and Blundell roads two months ago, after glancing at the formulation on a bottle he had sitting in his car.

“It’s like a shock came to me, and I realized I can actually make this,” said Segal, a pharmacist and president of Richmondbased natural hair and skin care company Herbal Glo. Hand sanitizer is now in high demand, said Segal, with even the government of Canada wanting to place an order.

Segal and his chemist spent three weeks developing the product, based on the World Health Organization’s recommended formulation and instructions.

While he originally planned to make a couple hundred bottles to give to friends and family, Segal said retailers he works with quickly expressed interest in the product.

“I have never seen anything like this in the 35 years I have been in business,” he said.

Segal said meeting demand is a challenge and his employees are working overtime.

“They feel it’s worthwhile — we’re helping people, helping lives,” he said. “I have tremendous appreciation for them.”

‘Social responsibility’ to help

Richmond-based decorative concrete company DreamCast Design is also using its production facilities to make muchsought-after hand sanitizer.

The company will be donating its first 1,000 bottles — out of 1,800 it will make — to local, small businesses and elders in the Russian community, said managing partner Catherine Traschenko.

Traschenko said it’s something the company can do to help the community.

“This is something that we can afford to do, and something we want to do to help locally, as a small business,” said Traschenko. “We can’t give millions of dollars to a cause...But you do what you can. It’s a social responsibility to assist.”

A Richmond family aims to raise $3,000 for Richmond Hospital’s COVID-19 Response Fund.

However, the campaign is a bit different from others. Donors will receive not only a tax receipt but also a homemade flower pot, created by campaign organizer Gary Wang, along with his wife Daisy and their two young toddlers.

Hailing from China and living in Richmond for almost 10 years, Wang said they hope to lighten the burden of others by giving back to the community after getting inspired by neighbours, friends and everyone they’ve met in Richmond.

“The dirt and flowers inside the pot all come from our backyard,” said Wang, who spent more than a week digging up dirt and plants in his backyard.

“The community accepted us right away when we arrived, now it’s time for us to unite together to make a meaningful difference for our home,” said Wang.

Meanwhile, Wang’s children, nearly three-year-old son Oskar and one-yearold daughter Chloe, have been busy helping out to set flowers and dirt inside the pots.

More than 24 hand-decorated flower pots are already lining up in their backyard, and more are expected to come, added Wang.

And within a few days, almost $4,000 was amassed and will be winging its way to local charity Feed U Cate 38 — which has already identified the families of students who desperately need groceries during the pandemic.

“Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, I recognized that those children who relied upon their schools for breakfast may be doing without,” said Lundie, a founding member of the social group, which started in 2013 after he invited five Steveston High School friends out for a beer.

“Steveston is unique in that it is truly one of the last small towns within a big city. We have a strong sense of pride in our community and we look out for each other.

“The SMSG had some funds left over, so I just posted online that we should purchase some grocery store gift cards and give them to the local principals who can disseminate them to those in need.

SMSG gets together for a beer ever few weeks and has two major events per year, where between 60 and 80 members embark on a bar crawl to support businesses in Steveston Village.

“The post just took off…This wasn’t intentional, it just sort of happened.”

“The goal is to strengthen our community through relationships,” said Lundie, while noting that the group’s name started out as a joke.

Lundie said retired Richmond school principal Glenn Kishi connected with the group and steered them towards Feed-U-Cate-38.

“If you know each other, you will take care of each other. That includes both your neighbours and the local merchants.”

“I’m so very proud to live in a community where people can come together like this and support others in need.”

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery has joined in the nightly salute to healthcare workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the past week, the cannery’s whistle has been blowing at 7 p.m. – in addition to its thrice-daily bellows – in appreciation for frontline and health-care workers.

Currently, the whistle, which bellows out compressed air, blows three times a day — at 10 a.m., noon and 5 p.m., to mark opening, lunch and closing of the museum.

A similar move has been made in Vancouver, where the city’s park board announced the Nine O’clock Gun would be changing its schedule to fire at 7 p.m. in honour of health-care workers, through to the end of April.

The gun, located in Stanley Park, normally fires at 9 p.m. daily.

Students who normally get breakfast and lunch at Richmond schools will be getting grocery deliveries instead, given that schools are closed to in-class instruction.

In one night Richmond’s Justin Ruscheinski went from making parts for his remote control cars on his 3D printer to making parts to help save nurses’ ears from pain.

The first food deliveries were made last week to students and families.

The school district has identified 244 students in 27 schools who are part of the school district’s food program, and who will now get “healthy and nutritious” food while studying at home, according to the school district.

The food delivery program is a collaboration between the school board, the district’s Feed-U-Cate-38 Food Program, the Richmond Food Security Society, the Richmond Food Bank and businesses.

The school district’s grounds crew pick up the food from the food bank and grocery stores and take it to the gym at Richmond Secondary School (RSS) where educational assistants and administration assistants pack the bags for pickup and delivery.

Sounds weird? Not really, given that Ruscheinski realized how sore front line health workers’ ears must be getting from the elastic rubbing on them from wearing face masks all day and night during long shifts.

The bags are then delivered by the school district’s bus drivers to the 27 schools and principals make sure families get the food, either by picking it up or being delivered.

To donate to the Feed-U-Cate-38 program, send a cheque to the Richmond School District, payable to “Richmond School District — Feed-U-Cate-38.”

So, instead of using his home 3D printer to fashion plastic parts for his RC vehicles, he has produced hundreds of four-inch wide “ear savers,” which have already been distributed to staff at Richmond Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital.

The little pieces of plastic attach to the elastic from the masks and take the pressure off the wearer’s ears.

“I got the motivation from a Facebook group and then just went straight to work on it at home,” said Ruscheinski, who works in warehouse security and photography.

“I might as well help out a bit and keep the

To keep up with demand, Ruscheinski has just splashed out almost $800 on a new 3D printer from Amazon.

“One batch (from the printer) equals 24 and that takes about two hours to produce,” added Ruscheinski, noting his only other cost is buying the plastic filament, which is about $30 to $40 to produce 100.

KEHOE, Kathleen Jean August 21, 1928 − March 11, 2020 After a life dedicated to her family, our amazing mother Kathleen Jean Kehoe passed away in Vancouver General Hospital. Kathleen (also known as Kay or Kate) was born in Vanleek Hill, Ontario.

Her smile was engaging; her kindness and gentleness were evident to all she met. She is predeceased by her husband James Bernard Kehoe (1980); infant son David Michael Kehoe (1959); son Christopher Stephen Kehoe (2017); brother Bill Quinton. Survived by daughters Karen Kehoe and Maureen Kehoe; daughter−in−law Marie Janzen. No more pain and no more wheelchairs, our mom is now with her Lord and Saviour, and with all her family and friends who have gone on before her. Details of Celebration of Life service in Vancouver still to be determined.

Zhang has highlighted several specialty dishes recommended by top chefs at her restaurant.

The list of must-eat food items wouldn’t be complete without adding the famous soup dumpling, Xiaolongbao. The dumpling hides its soup within its delicate wrapper. Eaters need to puncture the dumpling wrapper and then slurp the soup slowly before shoveling the dumpling down.
