By all accounts it was a spectacular performance, complete with belly dancing, bhangra dancing, traditional Cantonese opera, a stunt man and Chinese children’s choir.

In fact, some city councillors at a committee meeting on Monday suggested they should ditch their own World Festival and put on something more akin to the award show they witnessed Sunday evening at the River Rock Show Theatre.

“We had a multi-fest last night, (we could take) that performance and put it on a stage,” said Coun. Bill McNulty. Coun.

Harold Steves also praised the evening, saying it just needed some Highland dancers to be complete.

But among the accolades were some questions about the show, not the least of which was (as Coun. Alexa Loo put it) how it was “bankrolled.” The event, hosted by the Canadian Alliance of Chinese Associations (CACA) and the North American Artists Association, celebrated the City of Richmond’s 140th anniversary and honoured some of Richmond’s notable individuals and organizations.

So, if this was the city’s 140th, why wasn’t the city hosting it, and why didn’t all of Richmond know about it? At least that’s what Matt Pitcairn, the CEO and president of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, pondered. And he wasn’t alone.

“Where was my invite?” was a common refrain on the Richmond News’ Facebook page where we posted pictures of the night. And while it wasn’t well-publicized, word got out in some circles, as the 1,000-seat theatre was 90 per cent full.

But back to Loo’s “bankrolled” comment, simply renting the theatre costs $30,000-plus, never mind bringing in high-calibre talent — and did I mention the event was free?

CACA members have been quick to explain that the evening was funded by legitimate corporate sponsors, and I don’t doubt it was. However, CACA itself has been criticized for being too cozy with the Chinese consulate and promoting Chinese nationalism, such as a flag-raising event at Vancouver city hall three years ago. More recently, it signed a statement put out by the Chinese Benevolent Association which implied a pro-China stance.

That said, every government has its boosters. There are Canadian groups around the world working to build cultural relationships, encourage economic investment and promote Canadian values. Granted, the Canadian government, however problematic, is not a dictatorship and its human rights record, however blemished, is better than most. Still, the agenda is the same. What sets China apart is simply its weight, both economic and technological.

When I talked to Coun. Chak Au about the event months ago, he explained it was part of CACA’s way of giving back to the community and showing its appreciation. Well, that’s nice. Just as it’s nice China is investing billions into some of Africa’s poorest countries to build hospitals and schools. But with investment comes control, and as long as China imprisons people by way of political retaliation, we need to think carefully about letting it or its boosters pick up the tab.

To quote Loo, when the city hosts its own events, “there’s no chance we’re going to be accused of being in bed with someone we shouldn’t be in bed with.”

Cyclists already have own bike lanes Dear Editor,

Re: “Richmond pushes for more bike lanes,” News, Dec. 13.

I really do wonder why Richmond city council is pushing for more designated bike lanes when every Richmond pedestrian knows the city’s unlimited network of sidewalks have for a very long time been de facto bike lanes.

I feel until cyclists are brave enough to make use of their right to share the roads with other vehicles, things will never change. Drivers need to be reminded constantly that the roads are not there for them alone — think northern Europe.

But as long as the majority of cyclists timidly stick to the safety of the sidewalk, things will never change, and pedestrians such as this octogenarian writer will need to remain alert and nimble at all times.

Re: “Are button-pressers now immortal?” Letters, Dec. 12.

I have pondered this problem for many years and the one thing that I don’t understand is the mental morphing that occurs when a person, often a holder of a driver’s license, metamorphoses into a pedestrian.

According to online statistics, there are two million drivers in the Lower Mainland, not to mention all of our out-of-province and out-of-country visitors. Obviously, not all of them are on the road at the same time. I was unable to locate statistics on the number of active drivers, but I wonder about

The stepping from sidewalk to roadway appears to be something pedestrians, whether holders of a driver’s licence or not, do not consider potentially dangerous. Oh, the folly...

It has got to the stage that I don’t know who I fear more, another driver coming at me at 50km/h (usually more), separated only by a three-inch wide strip of white paint or that person standing on the curb, who obviously intends to cross the road, yet isn’t looking at the traffic, but rather is transfixed on the traffic light and steps onto the roadway the instant they are given

permission, regardless the dangers.

Please think of the guilt the person who kills you will feel for the rest of their lives, regardless of fault. Please be aware of your surroundings and watch the traffic as well as the lights.

As a note to the “powers that be,” a bar or gate preventing pedestrians from crossing prior to or after when safe, as is used in some other countries, would reduce the number of fatalities and injuries. The cost of installation of said gates/bars would be offset by the savings to our health/ medical system.

The dangers of being a property leaseholder combined with an affordable housing crisis are creating a perfect storm for dozens of residents at a modest condo development in Richmond.

Another resident, Therese, who didn’t want to give her last name, said she was born in the building 30 years ago, but now she is concerned she might be kicked out if she fails to make a full payment.

Many of the seniors and lower-income families at 6420 Buswell St. fear they may soon be on the street if they can’t come up with the $40,000/unit their landlord — Westpark Investments. Ltd. — is demanding for repair work on the building’s exterior.

“We are in the middle of a housing affordability crisis in this city. I am worried my sister and I are going to end up living on the street.”

Earlier this month, tensions were high as people gathered in the hallway awaiting a meeting to discuss the high envelope costs (expected to total $2,150,000) on the leasehold building, which was built in the 1970s.

One resident, Simon Chen, said he didn’t realize his nightmare had just begun when he purchased his home several years ago.

Chen told the Richmond News that residents started receiving letters from the landowner last May. According to the letter, each leaseholder is required to pay around $40,000 for the repair project, although the payments may vary depending on condo sizes.

Despite the hardship being caused, the landowner has the legal right to do what it’s doing — such are the pitfalls of leasehold agreements.

Leasehold means the buyer owns the house or condo but not the land it’s built on. When it comes to determining what repairs are done to the building’s exterior and communal areas, and who is financially responsible for those repairs, there are no over-arching regulations. It all depends on the specific contract — something leaseholders often don’t understand.

“When it comes to leasehold properties, probably 99 per cent of people don’t read their contract. This is a document that can

either make or break your life,” said Mark Wiens, a Richmond-based realtor.

“A lot of times, the way lease contracts are written, they’re not very fair to the buyer; there are a lot of risks,” he added.

No law to protect leaseholders

During the past few weeks, Daniel Chen has done lots of research online, looking for legislation that could protect him and his neighbours, but couldn’t find anything.

On the political front, leaders are sympathetic to the residents’ plight but are hesitant to champion their cause. Richmond city councillor Linda McPhail said although she is concerned, this issue is beyond council’s control.

MLA Jas Johal said the residents are not in his riding. MLA Linda Reid, whose riding the residents do live in, offered no comment.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing said they understand the situation is difficult, and the province is taking steps to inform buyers about potential risks.

However, “residents of these buildings are governed by private contracts with the building owner and disputes are handled through the courts under common and contract law.”

Although, none of this helps the Buswell residents, Chen remains hopeful as the group looks for legal aid and support on grounds of compassion.

The number of recorded sexual assaults in Richmond has increased dramatically in the past year, but that may have more to do with believing victims than an actual increase in incidents.

Cpl. Dennis Hwang of the Richmond RCMP said a new method of data collection, that follows recommendations from large police organizations in the wake of the MeToo movement, has more than doubled the number of incidents recorded when comparing September 2018 to September 2019.

According to a report presented

by RCMP to council at a monthly community safety meetings, there were 23 sexual offence files in September.

In February 2017, following significant media coverage regarding sexual assault reporting, the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS), the Police Information and Statistics Committee and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police developed recommendations for changes to police records methodology.

The change in reporting came into effect in January, 2019.

Particular attention was placed on classifying “founded” and “unfounded” cases, according to the RCMP. “The recommended changes focus on belief of the victim, unless there is concrete evidence to prove the incident did not occur,” said Hwang.

In total, there were 175 sexual offence files from January through September of this year, compared to the same period last year which had 110 files.

October saw 17 sexual offence files, which is also more than double the number of incidents reported in October 2018. Data for November is not yet available.

As of January, “founded” occurrences include offences where it has been determined an incident either took place or was attempted, explained Hwang, or there was “no credible evidence to confirm the incident did not take place.”

Hwang added that the 23 sexual offence files did not involve a serial offender or put the community at risk, and that Richmond’s sex offence rate is below that of Surrey, Burnaby and Coquitlam, which all saw a similar increase in 2019.

“The increase from 2018 to 2019 is significant, but consistent across all jurisdictions,” said Hwang, adding the increase is “mostly attributed to the CCJS changes.”

Corporations as well as renters in Richmond are now allowed to run short-term boarding and lodging businesses, as long as they have a license from the city.

The short-term Boarding and Lodging bylaw was passed at council on Monday, but it was not without its critics.

Some council members as well as members of the public, voiced concern that neighbourhoods would fill up with these businesses because there are no buffer zones required between them, unlike bed-and-breakfast businesses. But in the end, council voted to pass the bylaw with Couns. Kelly Greene, Chak Au, Michael Wolfe voting against.

Carol Day had to recuse herself since her husband owns a B&B. Coun. Harold Steves supported the bylaw, saying it could tackle

the rental shortage by letting renters share the cost by doing shortterm rentals on the side.

“We have to beat the high cost of rental,” he told the Richmond News.

It would also crack down on illegal Airbnbs, he added, because previously someone could just counter a claim of an illegal Airbnb by saying it was a boarding and lodging facility that didn’t need a permit.

Short-term boarding and lodging businesses, allowed since the 1960s, can have two guests, but, until now, a business license wasn’t required.

Staff argued for implementing the rules, saying once in place, it would be easier to regulate and ensure these establishment don’t have more than two boarders, and that they are licensed.

Au argued against allowing renters and corporations to run boarding and loding businesses, saying there are still too many loopholes.

Some Richmond council members praised a multicultural cultural event celebrating the city’s 140th anniversary, holding it up as a model for how festivals could be organized in the city.

A cultural event marked the 140th anniversary of the founding of Richmond.

But criticism regarding how the event was funded and organized has sparked questions.

The cultural extravaganza and awards show was attended by Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie and Couns. Alexa Loo, Bill McNulty, Carol Day, Harold Steves and Michael Wolfe on Sunday evening. The Richmond News was also invited and given a “News and Information” award.

The event was put on by the North American Artists Association (NAAA) and the Canadian Alliance of Chinese Associations (CACA).

Previously this year, the Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver came out with a statement calling for non-violence in Hong Kong. This was signed by CACA as well as several dozen other Chinese-Canadian organizations.

Language in the statement about the situa-

tion in Hong Kong uses similar language to that used by the Chinese Communist Party to describe on-going protests, for example, talking about foreign influence on Hong Kongers. The statement says that foreign powers shouldn’t take advantage of the situation and separate the Chinese people.

The 140th celebration and awards anniversary event took place at the River Rock Casino and included opera singing, acrobatics, Latin dancing, bhangra dancing and traditional Chinese plays and opera.

It was wholly paid for by sponsors — individuals, organizations and businesses — explained Brian Zhang, NAAA chairman.

No money came from any government, he added, either Canadian or Chinese.

At a committee meeting on Monday, Rich-

mond council was trying to figure out how to reconfigure its World Festival and the 140th anniversary ceremony was praised by some councillors as an event to emulate.

McNulty moved to cancel World Festival and replace it with its previous “multifest” iteration — otherwise known as the King George Festival — with an arts festival added on.

“We had a multifest last night, basically (we could take) that performance and put it on a stage,” he said referring to the cultural event.

Steves also praised the event, saying it just needed Highland dancers to complete it.

Loo, however, noted there has been public criticism regarding how the event was

The lack of clarity regarding the event’s funding as well as its process for nominating and choosing award winners, was enough to make the Richmond Chamber of Commerce decline an invitation to the event and refuse the award that would have been given to them, explained Matt Pitcairn, the chamber’s CEO and president.

He added the chamber gave “polite regrets” to attending the Richmond 140th Anniversary Awarding Ceremony.

Pitcairn pointed out the chamber hosts its own annual awards event and is aware of the process and the costs involved.

“It’s important to know where funds are coming from (for an event),” Pitcairn said, comparing it to a controversial reception at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention hosted by the Chinese Consulate.

The City of Richmond was not involved in organizing this gala event.

The remaining occupants at a homeless camp in Hamilton have packed up their tents and moved on — although no one is exactly sure where they went.

“We understand they found housing options elsewhere, and we know they continued to suggest their tent existence was only a temporary move until they could confirm alternate accommodation,” said Clay Adams, spokesman for the City of Richmond.

Early last week, the four individuals still camping on the city-owned land at 23560 Westminster Hwy. left the site where they had been living since last winter.

Soon after the occupants left, the city moved in to begin a clean-up, which included removing garbage, dismantling barricades, trimming bushes and replanting some grass.

The camp had been a source of controversy in the Hamilton neighbourhood,

particularly considering there was an elementary school nearby.

Some residents were afraid its occupants would cause a disturbance, but many others were more accepting, according to Adams.

“We appreciate that some residents found the occupants’ presence in the park unsettling,” he said.

“We also know many were less concerned and realized that homelessness is an unfortunate reality of society today.”

He added that homelessness is a complex issue that requires an integrated response.

“Staff from various departments will continue to coordinate and follow up on reports of individuals experiencing homelessness to ensure they are connected with services and to minimize impacts to the public,” added Adams.

He also noted that in September, council endorsed a Homelessness Strategy, which includes solutions like providing temporary modular housing and shelter for those in need.

Richmond city council approved a 2.2 per cent increase to the library budget for 2020, bringing it to almost $10 million and allowing for the hiring of two new youth-focused librarians.

Hiring the new librarians will add $167,150 to the budget.

Council also approved a request for $108,000 from the library to implement a new technology that will help streamline the library’s book check-in process.

“The new technology will implement a microchip into every item, so customers can place up to 25 items on the machine without scanning the barcodes,” said chief librarian of the Richmond Public Library, Susan Walters.

“It will allow us to take our staff from behind the scenes to out working with the public because there will be less tracking prior to check-in,” she added.

Day said the additional costs, along with the library’s request for two new staff members at cost of $167,150, would put the library over its $10-million budget.

“The $108,000 book return wall is just too rich for my blood,” Day said.

Greene objected to the fact the money was coming out of the Community Initiative Fund.

“The community initiatives fund is limited, it should only be used for a particular club or social group,” Greene said. “It is a want to have, not a need to have.”

Coun. Linda McPhail argued that using the fund for the new technology was appropriate given the account was meant to capitalize on projects that already have substantial funding from other resources.

Protest targets school dealt with the students and their families.

A handful of pro-Hong Kong protesters set up a picket line outside city hall Friday afternoon to demand the resignation of Richmond secondary’s principal and teachers following recent confrontations between students over China-Hong Kong tensions.

Recently, a pro-China letter was posted on the locker of a student in support of the Hong Kong protesters, and later there was a fight about the same issue.

In a video of Friday’s protest, shared on Twitter by user @Zhenyan2014, the protesters — speaking Mandarin and translated by the Richmond News — said Richmond secondary’s principal should step down.

“What the school principal has done to these pro-democracy students is unfair.

These students deserve an answer from the principal,” said one of the protesters in the video.

The protesters held up signs with such slogans as “Free Hong Kong,” “Communist Party get out of Canada,” and “Expel China’s spy students.”

They then walked to the school district office to continue their protest.

Uighur camps defended A Richmond man who ran in the recent federal election as an independent is defending the Chinese government’s treatment of Uighurs, a Muslim minority in the China’s northwestern region of Xinjiang.

The Chinese government has put about a million Uighurs into “re-education” camps — which they call “Vocational Education and

Richmond residents will have a new fitness centre to launch into their New Year’s resolutions. The expansive fitness centre on the second floor of the Minoru Centre for Active Living will open on Jan 1.

The 8,500-square-foot fitness centre — with a 1,900-square-foot studio for classes — and the aquatic centre have been sitting idle because of a crack in one of the pools.

Meanwhile, the seniors centre has been in full swing since March.

While the pool is currently being fixed, the city is opening the fitness centre to the public with a soft launch on

There are also a variety of weight machines and free weights for strengthening and bodybuilding.

Expanding the city’s recreation subsidies to include all ages — not just children and youth — resulted in a six-fold increase in use in the first year.

Despite that, only a quarter of the funds approved by city council — about $64,000 out of $233,500 — was used.

The city’s revised recreation fee subsidy program (RFSP) was introduced in fall 2018, and a progress report going to council notes it experienced “tremendous growth” with 1,367 people of all ages getting lower fees on recreational activities. Prior to the change, only 187 people used the subsidy.

The program is designed to help low-income Richmond residents access the city’s community centres, cultural and heritage facilities, parks, aquatics centres and arenas.

People who qualify for the program can get a 90-percent discount for programs, to a maximum subsidy of $300 per year for children

and youth, and $100 per year for adults and seniors.

In order to qualify for the subsidy, applicants must submit documentation such as government financial assistance data or proof of income.

Everyone who qualified for the program received a pass — in total, passes were scanned 28,255 times in the program’s first year.

The majority of pass scans, 21,570, were for swimming, and 14,966 were seniors participating in the city’s aquatics programs.

Community centres saw 5,951 pass scans during the first year of RFSP. The subsidy is available for most drop-in activities and registered programs.

Of the total 1,367 participants, 508 were adults aged 18 to 54; 390 children aged zero to 12; 375 seniors aged 55 and up; and 94 were youth aged 13 to 17.

Any unused subsidy does not carry over to future years, and all participants must reapply to the program to receive benefits in the next program year.

A Richmond resident is advocating for more climate change conversations with immigrants and those whose first language isn’t English.

UBC student Laura Chen cofounded Green Jobs for All to encourage young people to talk with their family and friends about climate change.

Chen, who founded the group along with Carmen Kim, noticed that language barriers are one of the biggest issues that prevented people from understanding how Canada and other countries are impacted by climate change.

And she discovered that no groups were actively encouraging immigrant families to talk about climate change and political perspectives.

“Climate change is really a fundamental human rights issue,” said Chen, whose nonpartisan organization provides

A Richmond non-profit that helps keep people out of the court system has received an almost $6,000 increase to its annual funding.

Under the new funding — which was approved as part of the 2020 budget last week — Touchstone Family Association will receive an annual increase of $5,700 to its current contract of $95,000 for the restorative justice program.

The organization describes restorative justice as a process through which the offender and victim are invited to come together “so the offender can be held accountable and the victim can receive reparation.”

In the video, the individual is seen holding a stack of newspaper in their arm walking up to the front door, placing something in the mailbox and walking away.

However, once they reached the middle of the driveway, they turn around to walk back to the front door and reach behind a pillar to take a small package before leaving the residence.

A Richmond residence reached out to Richmond News distribution manager Kristene Murray, when his home surveillance camera captured a “newspaper carrier” stealing a box from the front door of his house.

Richmond is not the only city that’s been targeted with the rouse, said Murray, adding that she advised the resident to report it to the police.

When Murray received the footage, she knew the person in the video was not the carrier for that particular route.

“This is not our carrier and this is not us. They need to know that this is just another scam to steal packages.”

Richmond RCMP is still trying to find a Richmond senior who has been missing for 24 days.

Feng Qin Zhou, 75, has Alzheimer’s and was last seen by family on Nov. 20, although there have been numerous reported sightings – some as recently as last week.

Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dennis Hwang said the police are still actively searching for the woman. They have received a number of tips, some of which have been helpful, he said, however many have not been accurate. Regardless, he added, police follow up on all tips.

On Nov. 23, about 500 people set up a group on Chinese social media platform WeChat to organize daily search parties. They shared locations and photos to help search for Zhou.

However, Caryn Zhang, the volunteer group organizer, has since called off doing any more searches for the time being.

“We have spent three weeks looking for Zhou, and we have never given up on any clues...But now we hope the family member

“If the police and the family member need our assistance, we are more than happy to help. However, we won’t organize any search party for now.”

The statement added that Zhou’s family member refused to accept interviews from media to spread the word about Zhou missing.

Meanwhile, Zhou’s story has been a hot topic in the local Chinese community; some Chinese Youtubers even made a series of videos to discuss the case.

The police are asking if anyone has information about Zhou or her location, to contact the Richmond RCMP.

Cyber hit on LifeLabs and demanded a ransom.

Hackers may have obtained the personal data — including addresses, logins, passwords, birthdays, lab results and health care numbers — of nearly 15 million medical patients in a recent cyber-attack on the LifeLabs systems.

LifeLabs notified the information and privacy offices in B.C. (OIPC) and Ontario (IPC) of the “potential cyber-attack” Nov. 1, according to the privacy officials.

The company then told the offices the cyber criminals had extracted patient data

LifeLabs — which has six locations in Richmond — published an open letter on its website in response to the cyber-attack, with its president Charles Brown saying they took measures to protect customer information.

“I want to emphasize that at this time, our cyber security firms have advised that the risk to our customers in connection with this cyber-attack is low,” said Brown in the letter, adding that the firms are monitoring the dark web and other online locations, and haven’t seen any disclosure of customer data.

Richmond magician John Kaplan is used to making things disappear, but there’s one item that’s sure to make a regular appearance on his fireplace.

Kaplan said he thinks the market for live, magician-style entertainers is still strong, despite the age of technology and instant gratification.

Painter follows father’s footsteps has become obsessed with textured details in her nature and portrait pieces, using a mixed-medium process of acrylic underpainting with oil on top as a finish.

After striking a deal with her dad, a Richmond artist found her calling to pursue a career in art.

Surrounded by artworks and historical artifacts, painter Jennifer Heine reminisced about the day her art journey started: her dad, a professional artist, offered her a deal to let her travel to Russia with him if she did a sketch.

“I was intimidated at first, but I really wanted to go to Russia with my dad,” said Heine. The fact that her two older siblings were professional painters didn’t help calm her nerves.

She submitted the sketch as well as other artwork in a group art show and they were well-received.

“Things turned out well and I sold the first painting in the show,” she said, adding many of her pieces have been shown in galleries since then.

Heine grew to love realistic painting and

“(My) family warned that it was not an easy way to make a living and can be impractical, but you can make it happen,” said Heine. She added that diligence, practice and hard work are all in the process of becoming an artist.

Fast forward 25 years, Heine is now participating in Richmond’s third ArtRich exhibition.

“The notoriety of the show is getting bigger and the (organizer) at the art gallery is doing a good job of doing things to integrate with the community and bring people together,” Heine said. “I think their general profile is growing.”

ArtRich, Heine added, has given local artists and the buying community an opportunity to see the various talented individuals Richmond has.

Andrew Wade, executive director of the Richmond Art Coalition, told the Richmond News that this year’s ArtRich exhibition has more Richmond artists than ever before.

“Thirty-seven of the featured artists (live) in Richmond directly, and with other artists having a connection to Richmond other than their addresses, including a number of artists who were former residents,” Wade said. The last exhibition, ArtRich 2017 had 22 artists from Richmond.

For Heine, ArtRich is about Richmond build-

ing a stronger art community.

“I’d like to see (ArtRich) proactively address the local groups and try to make sure local artists are participating and feel like their work is valued,” said Heine.

ArtRich will be at the Richmond Art Gallery, located at the Richmond Cultural Centre, until Dec. 31.

Julie Hammond, Richmond’s artist-in-residence, created a text-based art piece with words contributed by Richmond residents.

Earlier this year, Hammond

brought the Richmond community together to participate in a year-long project.

She asked residents write down words that described what was important to them personally, and what they felt defined the city.

These words were organized into two columns — “self” and “city” — and then transcribed by calligrapher

Marin Riesle, turning it into a 10-meter scroll-like artwork, called the “Minoru Manifesto,” which now hangs at the Richmond Public Library.

“It is a practical document, but it became a heightened document with the community voice,” said Hammond.

“It was a wonderful experience to see people recognizing their own quirks and rec-

ognizing what they included and not included in (the Manifesto).”

A festive double-header of free, 5K parkruns is taking place along the Fraser River’s Middle Arm Dyke Trail.

Kicking off from near the UBC Boathouse on River Road, the Richmond Olympic Parkrun organizers have issued an open invitation to all runners, joggers and walkers to join in the fun by throwing on a Santa hat or an elf costume.

The pre-Christmas run goes this Saturday, Dec. 21 at 9 a.m., while the special New Year’s Day run goes Jan. 1 at the slightly later time of 10:30 a.m.

And, if you’re feeling super keen to kick 2020 off in “style,” you could double up and do the Burnaby parkrun at 8:30 a.m. that morning.

No matter what your fitness levels are, parkrun organizers encourage everyone to go along and take part, as they have a volunteer “tail-walker” every week to make sure no one is left behind.

Young storytellers are hoping to raise $350 for BC Children’s Hospital on Dec. 31.

Twenty-six Richmond kids are in their final stretch to raise money for BC Children’s Hospital.

The young storytellers had set their goal to raise $350 for the hospital by selling a collaborative storybook with a deadline of Dec. 31.

As of Dec. 17, they have raised $306 and are asking the public for help during the final weeks.

Eight-year-old Alia Kong and 25 friends created a collaborative storybook and a non-profit organization called Kids Power Society to fundraise money for BC Children’s Hospital this winter.

Each book is being sold for $25 and for every book sold, $1 will be donated to the cause.

Richmond residents are being asked to see their city with fresh eyes and mould those observations into poetry.

“Poetry of Place,” a pilot project initiated by Richmond Multicultural Community Services (RMCS), aims to help individuals connect with their geographic reality as a means of bringing the community together as a whole.

Filled with character profiles and 10 chapters of stories, the book includes nothing short of superheroes and superpowers to save the day.

However, the underlying messages of these stories teach other kids about bigger concerns in society like environmental issues and how “people shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.”

“I like chapter seven because my message is to not be ignorant and that everyone should have their own identity,” said Alia, adding that the story reminded her to face problems head on and to not ignore them.

Ryder Chow, age six, and Naisha Khurana, nine, both find the book a great way to share their stories of important community concerns as well as a way to reach out and communicate with other kids.

Kids Power Society invites other kids to “share and create ideas to give back to the community.”

perheroes Assembly is the brainchild of the 26 kids in the organization, which started taking shape this past summer with the help of the Richmond Public Library providing a gathering space for them.

Parm Grewal, the executive director at RMCS, said this is an all-inclusive project, and she welcomes all demographics.

“We don’t want to eliminate anyone’s chance on their participation. We will be translating submitted poems if they are in a different language,” Grewal said.

Participants are encouraged to use their five senses, as well as distinct adjectives and metaphors to describe a geographic feature of Richmond in a 20-line poem.

RMCS said the goal is to create a visual map of Richmond participants’ whereabouts, to build a stronger network of community involvement, embracing openness and inclusion.

This is also an opportunity to develop upcoming literary talent, noted the former program coordinator at RMCS, Alan Hill.

Grewal said RMCS has been taking this program into various classrooms, community centres and libraries to build a sense of belonging in Richmond.

“We want to see how people are seeing and experiencing things differently when we all live in the same space,” Grewal said.

Submissions will be published on RMCS’s social media, but the association is still looking for donations that would enable it to publish a print version of the anthology.

Since this is the first time RMCS has tried the poetry program, Grewal said she hopes they will receive about a hundred submissions.

RMCS will accept submitted poems until the end of January 2020.

A unique partnership between two clubs has produced one promising skater and more could be on the way.

Yolanda Tan completed her competitive season by winning silver in the Juvenile Women U14 Division at last month’s B.C. Yukon Sectional Championships in Kelowna. The 13-year-old was not only second among 28 entries with a personal best score of 30.46 points but also the winner of the division’s prestigious artistic award.

Tan had spent much of her career with the Burnaby Skating Club before coming over to Connaught Skating in Richmond about a year ago. It was through the advice of her longtime coach Shelley Hewins who had reached out to Connaught’s director of programs Keegan Murphy. The thought was to enhance Tan’s progress by putting her with a club that had more resources at the competitive level and ice time too.

“Shelley and I have known each other for a long time. She was director in Burnaby for many years and did a wonderful job. We have a great relationship,” explained Murphy. “We always talked about Yolanda and I had watched her for a long time.”

“Shelley wanted to step away a little bit so she reached out to me to see if we could help their club, not only with Yolanda, but also from a staffing and a directional point of view too. Just some overall guidance in technical advancement and training methods.”

Tan began training with Connaught up to six days a week, working exclusively with coaches Leah Warwick and Matt McEwan. She thrived in her new competitive environment.

“I was now training with skaters that I usually compete against so it helped to push me,” smiled the David Thompson Secondary student. “Shelley was great and the coaches are really good here

The arrangement also has Warwick as part of the Burnaby Skating Club staff as a Senior Coach Consultant. On top of her many hours on the ice in Richmond, Warwick also attends one training session a week in Burnaby.

“The intention at first was to get to know their program — the coaches and skaters — and figure out their needs. Help make the whole club stronger,” explained Warwick. “I will teach a skater and coaches will be there (watching). I also will step aside and just observe the session.

“I get to work throughout the week here with

Yolanda too and it gives me sort of a connection and respective what was and is being taught (in Burnaby). It’s really wonderful there are clubs that are open to this sort of partnership and want to embrace making the sport better and the whole province better.”

Murphy added Tan’s performance at Sectionals was further vindication of the new partnership.

“Yolanda is still a big part of her hometown club.

Hopefully she is a role model and an inspiration to the skaters there. I’m really proud as an organization to support clubs that maybe are more local and grassroots than us. Giving them the coaching resources that can lift up their membership too.”

A season that has been hampered by injuries to date has at least allowed the Richmond Sockeyes’ impressive rookie class to flourish.

Over that stretch, the defending Pacific Junior Hockey League champion North Vancouver Wolf Pack have pulled away with a sizzling

Garrett Wicks, 18, was one of the best players on the ice Sunday night and is enjoying an outstanding season with 30 points in 26 games, including 16 goals.

His assist on Gabriel Parent’s second period goal was clinical.

In Sunday night’s 4-2 home ice win over the Aldergrove Kodiaks, six regulars were out of the line-up which has been typical for the past couple of months. Head coach Brett Reusch can’t even remember the last time he had to worry about healthy scratches.

“We have definitely missed the most man games in the league by a country mile.

We haven’t played with a full line-up for more than two straight games the whole year,” he said. “It’s been a difficult stretch where we have been missing six or seven guys each night for as far as I can remember.”

What the rash of injuries have done is provide additional ice time to rookies who are thriving with the opportunity.

Mattias Hohlweg 27-1-0-1 record — leaving the Sockeyes 14 points back and likely battling Grandview the rest of the way for home ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.

Reusch is fine with that scenario especially with a full roster come February.

“Mattias is playing those key moments for us now and he has earned every bit of it,” added Reusch. “(The rookies) continue to get better and better and hopefully we can do some damage when the hockey games really matter.”

The Schroeder family regrets to announce the passing of Henry Schroeder just two hours short of his 92nd birthday on December 9th, 2019. He is survived by his loving wife Susie (née Sawatzky), sons Gordon (Lou), Brian (Jenny) and Wesley (Monica) as well as grandchildren Nathan, Kristin (Patrice), Joel (Lindsay), Alanna and Laura. He is also survived by his two step-grandchildren Joshua and Kathryn Ayers, great-grandchildren Ethan, Émile, Griffith and Renaud and step-great grandchildren Zari and Colby. He was predeceased by his parents Henry P. Schroeder and Helena Thiessen and by all of his siblings, brothers Albert (Anna Born) and Frank (Clara Wiebe) as well as sisters Esther (Les Janzen) and Hilda (Carl Epp) and grandson David. The anticipated great-grandchild due on December 12th will sadly not meet him.

While growing up in Plum Coulee, Manitoba as the eldest son of a farmer, Henry, in his own words, “did the work of a man from a young age”. This was to define him for many years. At the age of 19 he earned enough money to purchase a return train ticket to British Columbia to visit family. Here, he met and married Sue, the love of his life, in 1950 and he never used the return portion of his ticket.

They eventually settled in Richmond B.C. and were married for over 69 years. He started employment with Armco Intl. as a labourer and welder and moved up to plant manager before retiring in 1982.

Upon retirement, he discovered that he had never developed any hobbies or avocations. He had volunteered much of his time with the Mountainview Mennonite Church as a deacon, maintenance person and choir member and worked full-time all of his life. Henry then began to donate his time to the Food Bank organized by the Peace Mennonite Church. He started cycling in his late 50’s and relished his birthday bike rides which always amounted to the number of kilometers of his age (with a few in the bank for the next years when he might be unable to continue). These rides continued until the age of 83.

The family would like to extend the utmost gratitude to Rosewood Intermediate Care Home in Richmond for their loving and attentive care during the last three years of his struggles with dementia.

He was strengthened and sustained throughout his life by his strong faith in God. His bounteous generosity towards family, friends, church and aid organizations will be forever appreciated. He volunteered over 20 years with the retail store of the Mennonite Central Committee. His skills as a carpenter, painter, and maintenance expert were sought after by family, neighbours and friends and he could never refuse them. During their retirement years, Henry and Sue took numerous cruises together and with friends. They also loved spending many weeks in Oliver B.C. during summers with their grandchildren and old acquaintances.

Countless people recall Henry’s kind, gentle demeanor and twinkle in his eye as he teased his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His many friends and neighbours recount how he would willingly offer his help and his labour unasked for.

His principle of giving what he could was an inspiring example to us all.

A memorial service will be held at the Peace Mennonite Church on January 17, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to the Mennonite Central Committee in his honour.
