I

was in the Steveston Community Centre gym over the weekend, puffing profusely on the stair master, when a woman looked over at me and smiled.

I quickly ran through the how-do-I-knowher list: kids’ soccer, kids’ school, a work event, a previous gym workout.

She approached and asked if I was Eve Edmonds “from the paper.”

Well, that narrows it.

“I have some suggestions for the paper,” she continued.

Interesting...

Her first idea was that we start a Quirky Question feature, where readers can write in and ask a question about Richmond.

“Why are there no self-serve gas stations in Richmond?”

“What are those circular wooden structures to the west of the West Dyke?”

We could even pose the question to a Grade 6 class and they could research the answer, she added.

I love the idea — for lots of reasons.

Not only is it a fun little curiosity-satisfier, it also speaks to the larger mission of this paper, which is simply to ask questions and get answers about our community.

Granted, that mission tends to be applied to substantive civic debates, (for example, why is there no bylaw reigning in the onslaught of mega homes?) but it would be a mistake to dismiss the little things while we’re at it.

Journalists are taught to keep their eyes and ears open, attend to detail and observe the small gestures — that’s how to write the better story. But the lesson doesn’t just apply to journalists. We’re all part of the story of Richmond; we can all attend to the details, observe and ask questions. It’s about taking ownership and authorship, albeit in a small way, of our evolving community narrative.

Her other suggestion was to create an open forum-type feature where people from the community can write a 500word article on whatever is burning their britches.

We already have letters, but these articles would allow a little more space and depth. We don’t want to work ourselves out of our jobs, but the fact is our reporters can’t be everywhere. And even if we could, we each only have one set of eyes and one voice. Everyone viewing a situation will see, hear and think about it slightly differently and it‘s that difference that creates the tug and pressure of a truly vibrant conversation — and community.

So let’s do it. I can’t promise it will be in next week’s paper, but we can get the ball rolling. Email editor@richmond-news.com and put Question of the Week or Open Forum in the subject line.

Pause for thought for the evolution of a successful fishing industry in Steveston and contributed enormously to the creation of a viable and enriching multicultural society in Richmond.

Half of my classmates at the old Richmond High School and on the baseball teams I played on were of Japanese descent and these relative proportions represented life in this municipality.

I developed a love of Japanese architectural, aesthetics, philosophy, and culinary arts because of my exposure at an early age to Japanese traditions.

The newly-opened Japanese Fisherman’s Benevolent Society building houses a display that tells the story of Steveston’s Canadian-Japanese heritage, a story that should have been conveyed in such fashion to the citizens of Richmond long before this.

I hope that tourists and citizens alike will pause in their walkabouts through Steveston long enough to view the display and become more educated about this mostly ignored aspect of the community’s history.

Thanks to our gang-busters Dear Editor, I would like to take a moment to thank all the volunteers that make Sea, Army and Air Cadets possible.

I would also like to thank all Scout and Guide leaders and all soccer, baseball, skating and any other kind of coach, including marital arts.

I guess I just want to say that a kid on a day-long hike or running around a soccer pitch or spend-

ing an hour on a parade square is not joining a gang.

Kids need to belong and they need a sense of accomplishment. They need a good reason to be proud of themselves.

We as parents can only do so much, and the schools alone cannot do it.

I chuckle to think of a woman running a Cub Scout troop, leading the fight against gangs; but that is exactly what they

are doing!

You can hire all the police you want and run around fighting the gangs, but the solution is to prevent the disease before it starts.

It is cheaper, more effective and better for society to support kids now rather than later.

Thanks again to the real gang-busters; you know who you are.

Summer rush from bylaw delay Open letter to Richmond mayor and councillors: I’ve been trying to figure out what’s going on with the oversized-houses bylaw.

As far as I can tell, there was a late addition to the June 22 council agenda to give developers an extra two months to get permits to oppress our city’s family neighbourhoods with oversized houses.

The procrastination motion appears to be one more example of putting developers first instead of putting Richmond first.

When I looked through the meeting agenda and noticed the procrastination motion, it immediately brought to mind what happened with the tree bylaw in the fall of 2007.

There was a long period between the time when the bylaw provisions were known and the time when they came into effect. As a result, everyone whose business included tree removal was working from dawn to dusk six days a week to meet the demand to cut down trees before the deadline.

The sound of chainsaws was everywhere. I hope the equivalent won’t happen with applications to build oversized houses, but it’s likely that it will if the regulations are put off for the proposed procrastination period.

In this case, though, the rush during the summer would be to get permits for oversized-house building, not necessarily to begin the construction. If builders are close to being fully occupied over the summer, a good guess is that much of the actual additional construction of oversizedhouses would occur later, with any new law — passed in September at best — NOT applying to the oversized-houses that got permits over the summer.

Passing the procrastination motion that was added to the June 22 council agenda would intensify the killing of neighbourhoods.

In contrast, acting decisively to protect neighbourhoods can only have good effects. The precautionary timely action can always be reviewed in the fall to make the protection laxer again if a council majority prefers that.

Dear Editor, Re: “Councillors want Steveston Dairy Queen site densified,” News, June 18.

It is heartening to hear that the developer G and B Estates has more foresight than Coun. Bill McNulty regarding the parking problem that is plaguing, not just Steveston, but all of Richmond.

It is not uncommon to note that the streets bordering most multiple dwellings are lined with the occupants’ vehicles.

If a site cannot accommodate the occupants’ vehicles, then so be it.

Don’t build beyond capacity.

I am at a loss to understand why our council is so determined to densify Richmond and exacerbate the parking problem.

I would also like to commend Coun. Day for her remark regarding the need for “purpose-built” rental units.

All too often developers obtain a rezoning with a certain number of low income/rental units included within the development and then opt out by offering the city cash in lieu of.

As the cost of real estate goes up, renting is becoming the only solution to those who want to stay in Richmond.

Dear Editor, My family lived in Richmond during the 1950s, a short 10 years after the end of the Second World War, and we were all aware of how our government had overreacted after the attack on Pearl Harbour and unjustifiably confiscated the property of Canadians of Japanese descent and sent them to internment camps for the duration of the war.

Aside from the injustice perpetrated on these Canadians many others were allowed to profit greatly from their misfortune.

City must resist dazzle of developers’ gold Dear Editor, Re: “Council tackles mega homes management,” News, June 18.

No Richmond resident could fail to observe the rampant demolition of older Richmond homes (464 in 2014; on track for over 500 in 2015) and their subsequent replacement by much larger houses that dwarf their neighbours.

Many new houses are egregiously oversized, questionably legal and are clearly impacting negatively the privacy and natural light of adjacent homes.

Changing streetscapes are irrevocably altering the character and livability of Richmond neighbourhoods.

This is not about new house styles or who is buying them. It is about houses that are too tall, too wide, and too deep for their lot size.

Richmond councillors and the mayor currently are considering changes to the zoning bylaw. Purportedly, these changes will reduce the massive height and imposing front, back and side wall faces of new houses.

I hope that the mayor and councillors are up to the task of analyzing critically the pro-

posals presented to them.

City planners have consulted extensively with the builders’ lobby.

Concessions to builders are eroding reasonable, common sense solutions, such as regulating just how far back a house can extend into its backyard, how close to the neighbours it can be, fixing a maximum height and reducing the area on second floors.

I urge the mayor and councillors to listen to the voices of Richmond residents and homeowners in a public forum.

As tempting as all that additional revenue

generated for the city from permit fees and taxes on high value properties might be, and despite generous campaign contributions to politicians from the developer community, current homeowners deserve to be heard above the clamouring and complaints of builders crying foul.

Strengthen the bylaw to reduce massive houses, do not water down common sense proposals and, above all, enforce the regulations!

I think that the City of Richmond’s spokesman, Ted Townsend, illustrated the control mentality of city bureaucrats and politicians, in saying that control of Richmond Island by Richmond will allow it to control the environment.

Former Mountie jailed

A

former Richmond Mountie has been jailed for 30 months after being convicted of perjury for lying at a public inquiry into Robert Dziekanski’s death in 2007.

Const. Kwesi Millington was one of four RCMP officers involved in the fatal Tasering of Polish immigrant Dziekanski at YVR. Millington was found guilty for lying under oath for a testimony he gave at the Braidwood Inquiry in 2009.

The judge said the officer’s perjury impaired the ability of the Braidwood Inquiry to answer key questions about the death.

Millington’s lawyer has appealed the conviction and his client is out on bail.

In February of this year, Millington was found guilty of lying at the public inquiry into the original incident where Millington fired his Taser multiple times after he and three other officers were summoned to the airport.

Dziekanski, who spoke no English, had been throwing furniture in the terminal.

Each of the officers were compelled to explain their actions at a subsequent public inquiry. All four were charged with perjury.

Millington’s verdict is the first time a judge has concluded that one of the officers lied.

Another Mountie, Const. Bill Bentley, was acquitted in 2013, while two other cases have not yet concluded.

Upon graduation, he opted to further his education at the General Practice Residency (GPR) program at the University of British Columbia based in the Vancouver General Hospital. Dr. Ismail spent over 8 months servicing 7 hospitals as part of an on-call service, gaining valuable experience in managing dental infections and trauma.

During a residency program, Dr. Ismail had the opportunity to travel and work in many areas of BC. He was settled in Kelowna for the past 2 years until deciding to make Vancouver his home.

Developer fights extradition

A

wealthy businessman’s bid to block his removal to China, where he faces corruption charges, was due to be heard by a Federal Court judge in Winnipeg this week.

Mo Yeung (Michael) Ching, also known as Cheng Muyang, is seeking judicial review of a 2014 decision to deny him refugee status made by the refugee protection division of the Immigration and Refugee Board.

Ching, the son of a now-deceased highprofile Communist party official who was also the target of an anti-corruption campaign, has claimed that authorities used evidence against him obtained through torture.

Ching, owner of the Richmond-based

property development firm Mo Yeung International Enterprise Ltd., is wanted on charges of embezzlement and “harbouring and transporting illegally acquired goods,” according to court documents, in connection with business transactions in 1996-97.

Ching became a permanent resident in 1996, but quickly returned to China and didn’t move permanently back to Canada until early 2001, when he and two others were being probed for the transactions.

Last month, Ching’s Winnipeg-based lawyer, David Matas, unsuccessfully asked the Federal Court to rule that all materials in the case relating to his appeal next week be treated as confidential.

ould you know what to do if you found a used hypodermic needle in your yard or in your office parking lot in Richmond?

We, at the Richmond News, had no idea what to do when we discovered two such items at the side of our building on No. 3 and Lansdowne roads last week.

At first blush, it seemed straightforward and, after a quick Google search, we called the “Needle Pick-up Hotline” and left them a voicemail with our address. Simple enough?

Alas, the gentleman from the 20 hours per day service, run in conjunction with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), called back to say they only operate in Vancouver.

More Internet trawling led to a call to Richmond Health Services, a provincial government agency under VCH, which seemed to offer some resolution to the needle dilemma.

Some telephone tag later produced a conversation with a very helpful Richmond environmental health officer, Dalton Cross, who explained that the City of Richmond, with special tools, would come deal with the needles if they were found on city property.

“If the needle is on private property,” said Cross, “it’s basically up to the person in question to deal with it.”

“Here, in Richmond, there are no programs in place (such as in Vancouver) to deal with the situation.

“There is a needle exchange (at Richmond Hospital) and some pharmacies may take them if the needles are in a ‘sharps container,’ which you can buy in most pharmacies.

“When picking them up, though, don’t touch them; use tongs or something to pick them up and put them in the sharps.”

Cross said Richmond, thankfully, doesn’t have the demand for a dedicated needle

! The News found needles outside its No. 3 Road office. Do you know what to do if you find used hypodermic syringes?

“Richmond hasn’t grown to that extent; you’re only the second person this year that’s called about this,” Cross told us.

Armed with a new sharps container, the News, with the help of salad tongs (which were binned afterwards), carefully placed the needles into the red tub.

The story doesn’t quite end there, however.

After arriving at Richmond Hospital, in search of the aforementioned needle exchange at the Gilwest clinic, we were directed rather vaguely down a corridor by the main reception.

There was more searching around for 10 minutes or so — with no staff anywhere to help — looking in vain for the clinic.

The Gilwest desk finally located, the News stood for another five minutes, waiting for someone to appear, before realizing on a piece of paper taped to the wall that the clinic was only open for a couple of hours on a Monday.

Having already spent about five hours over two days trying to dispose responsibly of two needles, the News, safe in the knowledge the offending items were in a safe place, tucked the sharps container behind the clinic’s desk.

We apologize if this was irresponsible.

or the past few decades, Swiss-Canadian Marco Berera has walked by a particular tree in his Westwind neighbourhood and a rush goes through him.

“Every time I see it I think about it,” he said.

It is his dream alphorn. And the tree has a branch perfect for this hobby craftsman.

For years, Berera has lay in wait.

Now, the Trumpeter Drive property in question is being developed and the homebuilder had attached a 48-hour notice to chop the tree down, which the city declared unhealthy and/or an impediment to the new home.

Berera called the builder who agreed to save the branch, which over the years has grown even plumper for an even bigger alphorn. As it stands, the branch is about 40 centimetres in diameter and five metres long, with a smooth curve to boot.

“It’s perfect,” exclaimed Berera, who at age 71 is still a very active wood carver, having recently finished an oversized wood model Swiss Army knife.

The Swiss-born Berera is a longtime Steveston resident who raised four boys after a career that started as a professional wood worker, building model mechanical parts.

He finished his career as a composite parts inspector with Air Canada and is now a proud grandfather of five grandsons.

Berera said he’s aiming to build a fourmetre alphorn as anything longer will produce a deeper sound. He said it will take him about

40 hours in his garage to carve out the horn.

It starts with initial cuts with a bandsaw, followed by cutting the wood lengthwise. He’ll then hollow out the piece to one-eighth of an inch and glue it back together.

Following an oil treatment on the inside and some laquer on the outside, Berera may choose to put a small painting of some flowers or a Swiss cross on the bottom, but the alphorn will mostly be a wood finish.

A: Last week we received a 2005 Range Rover for service. It had two observable

symptoms – the suspension would go flat, and the suspension warning light was on.

We scanned the car using the Land Rover test system, and read several faults.

The scan showed suspension fault and a rear height sensor fault. That’s when things got complicated.

This usually means the compressor is worn out. The question is – why? Compressors on these trucks wear out on their own, but they also wear out because of leakage (it overworks them and kills them even quicker.)

After the suspension compressor is replaced most of the times we then have to confirm the software version and if needed update the control module; this is because the compressor contains electronics, and it has different running parameters from the original unit. ichmond City Council postponed a decision to amend the city’s residential zoning bylaws, which could have stopped mega homes in their tracks.

As such, developers have at least another three months to “build big” under the existing bylaws.

At Monday evening’s council meeting, a majority of councillors cited the need for more public consultation from all sides of the issue.

“I suggest a little more analysis and to engage the community would be beneficial,” said planning committee chair Coun. Linda McPhail. Only Coun. Carol Day opposed the postponement, citing the fact roughly 40 homes per month are being demolished.

Day said she wanted to debate the merits of the staff recommendation.

“The referral (postponement) should come after we have the opportunity to hear from the people,” said Day. Coun. Alexa Loo said if there’s a summer rush to build big homes then it would mean people want them and thus it would be unfair to “cut them out …before giving (the amendment) a closer examination.”

With the item off the meeting agenda, people filed outside without having had the opportunity to speak. After a public hearing was scheduled for July 6, the earliest one can occur now is early September.

It was July 1, 1947 and the parade float she was riding on through the streets of Steveston was adorned with glassware from Sea Island’s Frasea Farms. She was the Dairy Princess, one of the contestants sponsored by a local business group in the second annual Salmon Queen Carnival.

“It was just beautiful,” says Braverman, who was just 15 at the time. “I don’t remember having to do much practising beforehand, other than to just get on the float and smile.”

While that was a long time ago, the underpinnings of the Steveston Salmon Festival, as it’s called today, haven’t changed much as it celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2015. Supporters, organizers and previous participants all feel it’s grassroots beginnings have allowed it to endure and become one the country’s biggest, community-based celebrations on Canada Day.

Sports day to Salmon Queens Originally held as a sports day celebration in 1945 to raise funds to build a playground in Steveston, the July 1 celebration has evolved to be a draw for partiers from across the Lower Mainland.

But back in Braverman’s time, it was a very local affair, supported by local businesses.

“We lived on Sea Island before the airport expanded. There were two canneries on the west of the Island: Acme Cannery and Vancouver Cannery,” says Braverman, whose maiden name was Montgomery. “Everybody knew each other on Sea Island — there

weren’t too many families living there at the time. And I was chosen as the Dairy Princess.”

That meant she had to get a “princess” dress for the Salmon Queen event.

“I didn’t choose it. My mom looked after that,” she says. “The day was lots of fun. We all got a lot of attention. And everywhere we went we knew people. After all, when I graduated from Richmond high school, there were only 65 kids in my class.”

On that July 1, Anna Savage was chosen, by a draw, to hold the title of Salmon

Queen while Braverman was selected as one of two princesses.

Following the crowning ceremony, the newly chosen “royalty” was whisked away to Lansdowne Race Track where the Salmon Queen was pressed into service by presenting a floral garland to the winning horse and jockey from one of the races.

“It was a lot of fun,” says Braverman, who didn’t hesitate when it was suggested she enter the Salmon Queen contest.

She actually considered it as somewhat of a community duty.

“My mother was always a very active person, so was my grandfather,” Braverman says. “They were great community people. So, you kinda grew up knowing you had to do your bit.

“My mom used to tell me you had to do more than your share because some don’t do anything at all,” she adds. “With Richmond being so big now, I’m sure

“And because the city gave us a little grant for our float we felt we should have a split parade,” he says.

But it eventually became too difficult to stage in two segments.

“We were spending so much manpower just for the parade, we didn’t have enough of the remainder of the day. Plus, we were starting at 5 a.m. and not finishing until midnight.

And that was taking its toll on the volunteers.”

“That’s how the relationship between the Japanese community and the Steveston area got re-started after the war,” Higo says.

From that the Japanese Martial Arts Building and later the cultural centre were built.

“Those events lend themselves to cultural harmony,” Higo says, adding that today, the majority of those people enrolled in Steveston’s Japanese language school kendo club and karate and judo clubs are not J Japanese.

Something fishy in Steveston T

he 70th Annual Steveston Salmon Festival – “Canada’s biggest little birthday party” – will celebrate our nation’s 148th birthday and the local heritage of the village of Steveston.

The festival’s main attractions are the Canada Day parade and the famous salmon bake, which serves wild sockeye salmon expertly cooked over open, alder wood fire pits. It’s a fun-filled day of live entertainment, trade, art, craft shows and many fun activities for children and youth.

Other attractions include the Japanese cultural show, martial arts demonstrations, a food fair, a children’s festival, and new this year, the freindly Chalk the Boardwalk competition that will connect the festival to Ships to Shore attractions. In addition, Canada Day at the Salmon Festival will welcome 41 new Canadians as part of the Citizenship Ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at the Main Stage.

The day starts early at 6:30 a.m. with a pancake breakfast, followed by the children’s bike parade at 9:30 a.m. At 10 a.m. the big Canada Day parade begins; it will include marching bands, colourful community floats, decorated vehicles and plenty of pirates.

Immediately after the parade, the festival is officially opened with the singing of O Canada followed by a declaration by Mayor Malcolm Brodie around high noon.

On the Main Stage, Odds, a Canadian rock band, will bring their quirky musical talents to Steveston for the first time.

The afternoon music line-up will also feature RichCity Idol 2015 winner Hannah Goertz, Steveston Seniors Drum Group, Stone Poets, Sunberry Fitness and lastly Urban Myth.

Remember to check the weather forecast and dress for the elements.

Parking is limited in and outside the village, so festival-goers are encouraged to walk, cycle or take buses (401, 402, 407, 410, C93).

And don’t forget the Ships to Shore events starting on Monday (June 29) and running until July 1 at Britannia Heritage Shipyards where a variety of vessels will be tied up for visitors to board.

embers of Vancouver-based Odds, this year’s musical headliner at the Steveston Salmon Festival, are used to being busy on July 1.

And while they have yet to experience the Canada Day holiday in Richmond’s historic fishing village, they are keen to soak up the local atmosphere during the upcoming national holiday.

“I know there’s salmon, and I know people out there like to have a good time,” said Craig Northey, lead singer of the group that was formed in the late 1980s. “So, I suppose the two will come together in a way that allows us to compliment the event.

“We’ve done Canada Days all over the country, from small to big, and it usually involves fireworks and people with face tattoos, cakes and all kinds of things.”

It can also be the centre of some rather “odd” occurrences, too.

Take for example the gig two years ago on the lawn of the B.C. Legislature in Victoria.

“That was most famous for almost being blown up,” Northey said. “There were 50,000 people and we no had idea that was going on.”

That was the day when police apprehended a pair of would-be terrorists who were alleged to have planned mayhem by setting off pressure cooker bombs in the crowded Victoria harbour front.

“It was all very strange,” Northey said.

With that incident firmly in the rearview mirror, Northey, along with bandmates Doug Elliott, Pat Steward and Murray Atkinson, feel July 1st celebrations are one of the most meaningful dates on the calendar for Canadian musicians.

“Most places on Canada Day, there’s such a good vibe,” he said. “We found that a family atmosphere in the middle of the day, people are all full of pancakes, and they are ready to celebrate what a good thing we’ve got going here as a country.”

But while that hasn’t prompted them to pen anything overtly patriotic, their music seeks to tell the typical Canadian story in a more subtle manner.

“I don’t know how much we are nationalists or patriots — we do love our country.

But we haven’t written anything that’s an ode to being Canadian,” Northey said. “I think all our songs speak to what it’s like to be a Canadian. Our narratives are sort of blocky, comedic takes on interpersonal struggles and existentialism.

“I think many Canadians can relate to that, especially those who have to live through long, cold winters,” he quipped.

That aside, Odds have lent their talents to some uniquely Canadian productions over the years. They were behind the opening and closing theme songs for long-running sitcom Corner Gas. Plus, they have worked with The Kids in the Hall comedy troupe, and served as the house band at Canada Hockey House during the 2010 Winter Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. It’s

a role they reprised for the Vancouver Canucks during a pair of playoff runs in 2010 and 2011.

“That (Canucks house band) wasn’t necessarily our music, it was more of us jumping up in the crowd and playing instrumental riff rock,” Northey said.

As for what they are expecting from the audience this Canada Day, Northey said: “In some places you have to draw people out a little more. But I have a feeling Steveston will be ready to go.”

he second the last float passes through the Steveston Salmon Festival parade, Davood Khatami and many of his fellow village merchants will be sparking their barbecues for Canada Day. Dotted around Steveston’s business community, one-by-one, store owners will fire up the grills in front of their properties to entertain customers new and old and passers-by.

It’s a time-honoured village tradition on every July 1 that the merchants get their collective teeth stuck into.

And this year is no different, with Bean and Beyond Café owner Khatami leading the way, as ever.

“We love nothing more than getting the barbecue out,” said Khatami, who helped organized last summer’s Steveston World Cup street festival to co-ordinate with the actual World Cup of soccer.

“We do this every year and so do many of the people around here. We get things going right after the parade.

“But we open at 7 a.m. especially for Canada Day and we’ll have coffee and muffins outside on the sidewalk, and all the flags will be flying.”

Khatami said he deliberately doesn’t offer the traditional Canada Day dish of salmon on his barbecue out of respect for the festival’s annual salmon bake, which raises money for the local community centre

isitors to Steveston can witness the official swearing in of 41 of their new fellow Canadians at a citizenship ceremony at the main stage of the Steveston Salmon Festival.

Christopher Kerr of Citizenship and Immigration Canada said the 41 new Canadians come from 20 countries.

They will pledge allegiance to the Queen and sign official papers at the stage at 8:30 a.m.

“It’s the exact same procedure that we follow during the rest of the week, but in this case it’s a sort of an enhanced ceremony,” said Kerr, who noted the selection process was random as the participants just so hap-

pened to be “ceremony ready” at this time.

The ceremony will be attended by local political representatives from all levels of government.

In 2013 Canada admitted 258,953 permanent residents, 13 per cent of whom came from China, which represents 20 per cent of the world’s population.

This will be the first public ceremony after controversial Bill C-24 was passed, which puts greater residency requirements on applicants and has clauses to strip dual citizens of Canadian citizenship in the event of acts of terrorism, treason or armed insurrection against Canada.

And starting at 10 a.m. on Canada Day seven teams of artists will plot-point themselves along the competition route, from the Steveston Community Centre, down Easthope Avenue and east along the boardwalk to the Phoenix Pond.

The teams will spend several hours conjuring and creating their works of art on the sidewalk, with a $500 prize for the winning organization.

“We’re giving them a blank canvas to create what they want,” said Glavina, whose own non-competing team will be chalking a theme of “birthday wishes to Canada from around the world.”

Three judges — from the city, community centre and Phoenix Art — will decide on the winner.

“This could be quite fun and has the potential to grow; Victoria has a massive event like this,” added Glavina.

he last musical act closing out the Main Stage performances at this year’s Steveston Salmon

Festival doesn’t get much more local than the band Urban Myth.

With four of its five members from Richmond — three who call Steveston home — and an original song on their playlist for the July 1 performance about Steveston, you can see why.

“We really consider ourselves to be a Steveston band. We live here. We rehearse here. And we play here,” said Blaine Booth, who along with lead singer Jasmine Bharucha, Tim Koustendreas, Larry Lemieux and Dan Dittrick make up Urban Myth.

“And when there was an opportunity to play at the Salmon Festival, we were honoured to take it.”

Booth, who along with his family are regulars at the Canada Day event, said he would often see bands performing on the main stage on the community grounds and think about Urban Myth, which was formed in 2007, playing there, too.

And thanks to a late audition during a gig at the Buck And Ear, Urban Myth’s appearance at the Salmon Festival became a reality.

“I think we were really late in applying, but the stars seemed to have aligned and we are more than proud to actually be part of the entertainment at the Salmon Festival,” Booth said.

What people will hear during their short, 30-minute set will be a variety of cover songs — mostly pop-inspired — plus one written by lead singer Bharucha, a former pop star in India during the 1990s who was the first female artist to be featured on MTV Asia.

Booth said the song is called Fog Horn Blowing, a fitting piece for anyone who has lived in the fishing village, especially during the misty fall season.

“We should be able to get about eight or nine songs into our set, and that one by Jasmine is scheduled to be our last one,” Booth said.

There’s always an opportunity to learn from history, especially when you’ve been tasked with chronicling an event such as the Steveston Salmon Festival which this year celebrates its 70th anniversary.

That has been Eric Chow’s job since last August.

So, what did he absorb after sorting through countless photos, newspaper clippings and video from the Richmond Archives to form a historical display to be unveiled July 1?

“What I saw and learned is that there is this great passion and pride from people who were involved with the Salmon Festival, whether they were volunteers or just attending,” said Chow, 23. “It was an event

people looked forward to each year. It was a chance for them to see their friends and neighbours in a place where they could show the public and the rest of the world what made Steveston, and Canada, so special.”

Chow’s efforts will be on display inside the confines of the Net Shed behind the Steveston Community Centre that is designed to draw attention to the festival’s impact through the decades.

“We wanted to make sure the whole history of how we started and evolved is not lost,” said Alan Clark, current Steveston Community Society president. “When you get up to the 70 year mark there’s a tendency to forget.”

On one side of the tennis court-sized display is a collection of photos, plus a series of videos transferred from 8 mm film shot during Salmon Festival’s in the 1960s.

he Steveston Salmon Festival parade has its comers and goers each year and through the decades, but one of the more recent headliners has been the Seafair Minor Hockey Association and its 200-plus strong army of hockey players marching down Moncton Street.

This year will be quite similar to last year in that the association will once again have its big float to carry a few lucky orange sunglasses-clad prospects on top.

The Seafair crew will also have some Vancouver Giants walking alongside them, as well as the Giants ride-along Fanboni, which will compliment the float very well.

What you may also notice is an abundance of young kids with their heads shaved.

That’s because Seafair is fresh off a fundraising effort for Children’s Hospital, whereby

more than 45 people (parents and kids) shaved their heads (see picture) and raised more than $16,000, with the help of Steveston Barbers. The fundraiser even included four Richmond Ravens, who cut their locks for children with cancer.

“We wanted to have something that young and old alike could do together and lead into the gallery side,” Chow said. “And building a parade float is ideal because it’s a central and important part of the festival.”

Sprinkled in between the displays will be some artifi-

cats — old trophies awarded at past Salmon Festivals and Miss Richmond Pageant memorabilia.

Overall though, Chow said the display seeks to show the connection people have had with the festival which draws visitors from across the Lower Mainland each year, like Chow, who grew up in Burnaby, but remembers the attraction of making the trek to Steveston on Canada Day. “People from all over the Lower Mainland make their

way here, push through the crowds, try and find parking, and spend their entire day here having a lot of fun,” Chow said. “I was certainly part of that crowd because the festival just gives you so much.

“In Vancouver today we don’t have many of the huge festivals where whole communities are blocked off.

That’s one thing that makes Steveston still so unique.”

This July 1 she returns to the Main Stage at the Steveston Community Centre with Stone Poets, who will be playing their brand of contemporary folk music from 2:30 p.m.

“It’s kind of been a home base for me for many years,” said Jardine adding two aspects she really likes about the Salmon Festival is the chance for a local act such as hers to play in front of a home audience, and that it’s a family-based event.

The last time Stone Poets — which includes Jardine, Marc Gladstone and Scott Jackson — played Steveston was three years ago.

Formed in 2011, the group is putting out its third release in time for the July 1 appearance.

“We’re really excited about that,” Jardine said. “We did a pre-release in California last month, and we thought we’d bring it home and open it here.”

While they have settled on the label of contemporary folk, Jardine said she and her bandmates struggled for a long time to define their sound.

“We have so many elements, it’s definitely folk music, but definitely not traditional,” Jardine said. “There’s a lot of interesting lyrical content and dark, moody piano parts.”

While they do not have a song that is typical “Canadiana” Jardine promises their original piece called Carry will bring the audience together.

“Hopefully, they can sing along with a neat piece of a U2 song (One) we incorporate into it. It’s a really nice transition we put in that people always ask us to play.”

But one of the best aspects of playing on July 1 is the chance to reflect the diversity of Canada, Jardine said.

“It’s nice for everyone to come together and have a spot they can celebrate that.”

Harold Rose at Sip Wines recommends pouring a tall, cool rye and ginger if you want to be nostalgic and relive the 1960’s when July 1st was known as Dominion

Day. Harold prefers Seagram’s Crown Royal with Canada Dry Ginger Ale. My daughter, Robyn, adds a splash of maple syrup to the cocktail.

Barbecued burgers and cool brews are always popular on Canada Day. Grant Bryan of O’Hare’s Gastropub recommends their Natcho Burger with Four Winds Pale Ale from Delta. If you’re into grazing, O’Hare’s Cobb Salad is delicious with Postmark Pilsner from East Van. Wine lovers would enjoy a Pinot Blanc from the Okanagan’s Blue Mountain Winery to go with their greens.

Canada Day and barbecued salmon are synonymous in Steveston, especially with the Salmon Festival going on. When it comes to matching a sockeye with wine, Pinot Noir is stellar. It’s a medium light red that doesn’t overpower the salmon as many reds would.

f the potential employee likes the idea of volunteering at a local charity for the day, instead of working in the office, then great.

If, during the interview with Sage North America, it becomes apparent they’re already volunteering in the local community, even better.

It’s no coincidence that almost half of the 350-strong workforce at accounting software firm Sage — whose Canadian HQ is on Richmond’s Wireless Way, just east of the Richmond Auto Mall — have signed up this year for the company’s volunteering program.

The “Sage in the Community” program plays matchmaker for employees to swap up to five working days per year for helping out one of 15 local charities.

And it’s been nothing short of a revelation since its inception in 2013, with help donated to more than 60 volunteer events, along with around 2,200 hours of employee time.

In 2014 alone, 140 Sage workers have stepped forward to give 705 days of volunteering at the likes of: the Richmond Food Bank; Terra Nova Sharing Farm; Critter Care; ALS; Ronald McDonald House; Habitat for Humanity; RAPS and OWL. “We believe it’s important to give back to those less fortunate and this is something we really believe in as an organization; it’s

not just words, it’s action,” Nancy Harris, vice president and general manager for Sage North America’s Canada division, told the News.

“We are all about supporting small businesses, as they are the fabric of our community and if we can help them more than just providing them with great products, then it’s a win-win for everyone.

“And when colleagues see each other signing up for the program, it goes viral very

quickly.”

The volunteering program at Sage, which creates and supplies accounting software amongst other products for small and medium businesses, is not mandatory for employees and they still get paid when attending at the charity of their choosing.

If signing up for Sage in the Community, they give two per cent of their working year, or up to five days at the charity of their choice.

The program also donates two per cent of

the “free cash flow” (company profits after all investments are made) to the charities.

And Sage is in the process of working out how to donate its software licences, so the non-profits in question can run their organizations more efficiently.

“What we find is that people really want to help their communities but rarely have time to figure it out,” added Harris.

“What we do with this program is make it easy for them; we set it up so it’s a case of ‘here are the charities and here are the days you can help them.’

“It’s also a great recruitment and retention tool and we do bring it up at the interview stage, as employees care about their communities and about giving back.”

A lot of the time, said Harris, interviewees will actually ask if Sage has a program to give back to the community.

“Many of them are already volunteering in their communities and this resonates with us a corporation,” she said.

“These are the kind of people we want at the company and the program is definitely important to us in attracting the right kind of person.”

The system itself is an online calendar, which simply matches employees with charities.

Harris suggests that anyone thinking of running a similar program should first ask employees if they’re interested in volunteering and then get ideas of what charities they’re interested in.

“Then figure out the logistics of what that charity needs and set up the matching program on the calendar,” said Harris.

“Once it’s up and running, employees can even suggest charities along the way. That happens here all the time.”

Viceroy declares bankruptcy Horseshoe Way headquartered Viceroy Homes and Viceroy Building Solutions filed documents recently to seek bankruptcy protection.

The move affects 30 to 40 local jobs, and another 100 or so at the Port Hope plant. Viceroy provided pre-engineered home manufacturing and construction in the residential and industrial sectors.

According to a report from Vancity Credit Union, Richmond rates as the second best community to start up a small business in the Lower Mainland.

Number one was Surrey out of the 17 municipalities in the study called Open for Business: the top cities to start up a small business in Metro Vancouver.

The rest of the top five, in descending order, included New Westminster, Langley (Township), Langley (City). West Vancouver was rated in last place.

The report analyzed seven factors that contribute to small business success, including a thriving market, reliable transportation, cost of doing business, supply chains, personal cost of living, personal support and a culture of entrepreneurialism Richmond scored highest on the question of transportation network and family support, but was dead last when it came to access to population and housing costs.

In the transportation category the study examined the availability of major transit stops (SkyTrain), and the distance from the town centre to YVR (8.9 km).

ichmond Youth Basketball League (RYBL) is not a year-round operation but it’s getting pretty close.

With nearly 1,200 registered participants in its variety of programs this past season, the RYBL brought the curtains down on the 2014-15 campaign by heading outdoors for its 2015 Classic Tournament.

The 3-on-3 event was staged at the South Arm Community Centre earlier this month and was essentially a youth version of the annual 4-on-4 Dolphin Park Classic — complete with non-stop music and a full concession, minus the beer garden, of course.

“Three-on-three is something FIBA (International Basketball Federation) has really been pumping up lately,” explained RYBL program coordinator Matt Winograd.

“It increases the number of ball touches for skill development and really goes well with our program values.

“We used to run something similar indoors back in the 1990s but last year we moved it outside.”

That decision made a whole lot of sense.

Richmond has some of the best outdoor courts in the Lower Mainland and South Arm’s unique rubberized floor surface and glass backboards lead the way.

It also reflects what is happening in the city as more and more kids find time to head to their nearest community centre to shoot hoops. It’s not rare to see the lighted courts even busy on cool winter nights.

“It’s very popular for many reasons,” explained Winograd, who teaches in the Richmond School District when he is not busy overseeing the RYBL. “You don’t need a whole lot of equipment to play and the rise in popularity in the NBA and college basketball is helping too.”

The RYBL season is divided into two programs — fall/winter and spring — and features co-ed and single gender age divisions ranging from 5-to-17-years-old.

For the more serious players getting ready for high school basketball, there are Grade 7 rep teams that compete in Lower Mainland leagues for boys and girls. Both RYBL girls teams reached the podium at the recent U13 provincial championships.

This past season, was also one of the best in recent memory for Richmond high school basketball with five teams from four schools qualifying for various provincial tournaments at the senior level. It’s no confidence many of those players are RYBL graduates.

“It’s great to see so many kids go on to have success with their school teams,” added Winograd. “High school basketball is definitely on the rise in Richmond and it’s not just one or two schools.”

t’s biggest week in the history of the growing Richmond/South Delta Ball Hockey Association.

The organization is hosting the provincial championships for the first time ever — bringing 56 teams to the city to compete over five days. The tournament will take place at the Richmond Ice Centre (RIC) and Minoru Arenas, with the division championship games slated for Sunday at the RIC. “We will have teams coming from Victoria and across the Lower Mainland,” said Richmond/South Delta Ball Hockey president

George Bal. “Every association will have representation and there will be seven age group finals.”

Several years ago, the association was more concerned about survival than hosting a highprofile tournament.

With less than 100 players registered, the executive reached across the Fraser River to recruit kids from South Delta. Since then, the game has caught on in a big way.

This season attracted 440 kids.

“There are only a handful of kids coming from Ladner now,” said Bal. “It has grown so much and it’s all Richmond kids. I think people are realizing it is an inexpensive sport that is good for cross-training. Hockey players are able to work on their stick skills by doing

things that are very difficult when you are skating too.”

Bal added playing in a full size rink for all ages, compared to on the street, makes it an attractive sport from a fitness standpoint. It also doesn’t hurt when Mike Babcock ran ball hockey sessions for Team Canada hopefuls in breaking down strategy for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Canucks forward Alexandre Burrows is another big advocate of the game.

The only equipment required are gloves, helmet, a hockey stick and soccer shin pads.

Even though there maybe some bumping in the corners at the older age levels, ball hockey is a non-contact sport.

Bal learned first hand about the sport’s surging popularity. It’s how he got involved — first as a coach then as an executive.

“It was six years ago and we were late to register so my son was put on a wait list,” recalled Ball. “He really wanted to play and when I found out they were short of coaches and his name would come off if I stepped forward, it was an easy decision. I had played myself for many years.”

He was later endorsed as association vice-president and stepped into the top position just days before the start of the current season.

Shackles and Grieff among B.C. Hockey award winners A

pair of Richmond residents were among the major award winners as part of B.C. Hockey’s Annual General Meeting in Sun Peaks.

Longtime Seafair Minor Hockey executive Nigel Shackles was presented the Life Members Award while Phil Grieff was named Coach of the Year.

Shackles has been involved with Seafair Hockey for 13 years. During that span, he has served in a variety of roles, including a division manager, tournament cordinator and Hockey 1-4 cordinator. He became the association’s president for the 2012-13 season and remains in that capacity today.

“Within our association, there is no individual who is more respected or more revered than Nigel,” said longtime Seafair executive Ken Hamaguchi “We all marvel at his commitment to the players/membership, his passion for the game, and the

professionalism and integrity in which he conducts himself.

“Nigel’s greatest gift and probably his biggest fault, is his ability to deal with problems. Whether it’s about a parent’s complaint about ‘their kid getting cut,’ a coach’s complaint about not enough practice ice or the treasurer’s concerns about balancing the budget, his ‘door’ is always open to everyone.”

Meanwhile, Grieff was recognized for his outstanding work this past season with the Semiahmoo Minor Hockey’s Pee Wee A1 team. The West Vancouver Police constable guided his squad to a first place finish at the Regina Pee Wee Classic and and a bronze medal at provincial tier one championships.

The Ravens enjoyed all their success with Grieff always rolling his lines despite six first-year players on his team.

Dunfee & Kimoto named to Canadian team for Pan Am Games Derrick Ng and Toby Ng. Nathan Hirayama is also expected to be named to Canada’s Rugby Sevens team.

Dunfee, 24, is coming off an impressive 2014 campaign that saw him establish new Canadian records over 20 (1:30.13) and 15 (1:00.06) kilometres at the 2014 IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Taicang, China.

He also recorded a new personal best of 3:58.34 over 50 kilometres at the Australian

National Championships. It was enough to be named Richmond Sports Awards’ Adult Male Athlete of the Year. He also earned his Kinesiology degree at UBC. Dunfee will be joined in Toronto by longtime Vancouver-based training partner Ianki Gomez.

Kimoto, 23, enjoyed an impressive collegiate career at the University of Indiana that included winning the Big Ten indoor

and outdoor titles in her senior year. Her career personal best leap outdoors was 1.83 metres. Her top jump so far in 2015 was 1.78 metres, two weeks ago at a competition in Guelph.

She will be joined in the women’s high jump competition by Alyxandria Treasure.

The athletics competition begins July 18 with the women’s marathon and continues through to July 26.
