here’s been some interesting chatter on the Richmond News Facebook page following our story regarding the fact city council has come up with a sum it thinks Onni should contribute towards community amenities in order to have its site at the Steveston boardwalk rezoned.

Some (many, actually) say the total of $5.5 million is too low. Others say, “whatever, we’re sick of empty buildings. Take the money and move on.”

However, Bob Ransford, who often comments on building policy, notes the city may be wading into dangerous waters because, technically, it should not be “selling” zoning. He writes that according to the Local Government Act, it is illegal for the city to request a payment to have property rezoned, although it can ask for a contribution for “bonus density.”

It’s an interesting point, but whatever we call it, I don’t think it’s news to anyone that much negotiating happens when a developer requests rezoning and much of that negotiating involves money.

The part of the story I found most interesting was the question of a donation. Onni suggested that instead of paying the $5.5M, it would pay $4.75M and then donate $500,000 to two charities ($250,000 each.) That would bring the total to $5.25M, spitting distance from the city’s request.

A number of the councillors were deeply offended by the offer — and for good reason.

We hear a lot about “giving back to the community,” and, for sure, that’s a nice thing to do. This is the donation season, and we should be thinking about giving to the food bank or toy drive.

Large corporate donations, however, have a double-edged sword. For one, a good chunk of that donation will be returned to said corporation via a tax credit. But, more importantly, big donations have a habit of swaying public opinion and can be used to leverage control; it’s the old he-who-pays-the-pipercalls-the-tune thing.

As individuals, we have every right to pick the causes we want to get behind, but it’s quite another thing to replace a city fee with a corporate donation.

It’s the job of public officials to spend the money they collect through taxes, fees, etc. in the best interest of the community at large. It’s not the job of corporations to make those decisions.

Not only did Onni suggest making a donation, it specified which charities it wanted to donate to.

Bringing third parties into the mix is a great way to “put pressure on council,” as Coun. Derek Dang said. “If we don’t agree, the third parties don’t get those donations, and we look like the bad guy.”

In fact, Loren Slye, past president of the Steveston Historical Society, one of the two charities named, showed up at an earlier public hearing to speak in support of Onni. He has since been clear that Onni never tried to “buy him.” In fact, it was he who went to Onni with the suggestion of a donation. And I appreciate Slye is trying to save the historic post office at the Steveton Museum, a worthy cause.

Still, bringing the issue of donations into a public and contentious debate about fees, is problematic.

I may not like all the decisions city council makes, but I do like the fact those decisions are being made by people I can elect — or not.

Seniors stripped of bingo rights Dear Editor, I write to you today to inform you of the present circumstances and discontent of many Richmond seniors, and members of the Richmond Senior Center.

My friend Linda, a senior in Richmond, asked me to contact you with regard to seniors’ bingo licensing by the City of Richmond.

Previously, in the past, there were two weekly bingos for the seniors in Richmond.

The functions were held Thursday afternoons at 12:30 p.m. and Friday evenings at 6 p.m.

And now there are none.

The president of the center, Kathleen Holmes, has been approached on numerous occasions to re-establish such a worthwhile event for seniors.

It is not only a social activity, which is important for older folks to enjoy but would bring

in revenue for the center.

When asked for a reasonable reason or explanation of why this activity is no longer licensed by the City of Richmond, none was given.

Every other senior center in the Lower Mainland, plus other locations in B.C. have bingo nights.

Why not the Richmond Senior Center?

Approximately 32 per cent of Richmond’s population are seniors.

We hope the publication of this letter makes a difference to the powers that be and I appreciate the space in your paper to help us.

Seniors are a valuable and vital part of any community and deserve to enjoy their latter years with social activities and having the fun that they deserve.

We now know that we can produce 300-times the amount of food in a a temperature- and light-controlled warehouse than we can produce in the same footprint of a field in open air.

We now know that light technology has improved the quality of light and reduced

the cost of light to an affordable level.

We now know that we have abundant energy through the Site C dam, solar power and geothermal.

Is it not time that we do something different?

Let’s create a new industry of food production, creating food security which will free up land to build affordable housing for our people.

ealth Canada is recalling a number of products sold by a Richmond company that could pose serious, and potentially fatal, health risks.

Among the haul of unauthorized drugs seized from Before & After Beauty Lab, at 115-4231 Hazelbridge Way, was a highconcentration lidocaine cream, labelled as human placenta.

Also included were injectable products and a drug labelled as being derived from stem cells. The products are packaged and labelled in languages such as Japanese or Korean.

As a result, information about ingredients, usage, dosage and side effects may not be understood by all users.

All drug products sold in Canada must be authorized for sale by Health Canada.

As such, taking drugs that have not been authorized by Health Canada may pose serious health risks as they have not been assessed for safety, effectiveness or quality.

Health products containing human placenta run the risk causing bacterial and viral disease transmission. No health products containing human placenta have been authorized for sale by Health Canada.

Affected products include:

'Misery Mile' claims another victim Raji Kaila, 37, was in car that landed in ditch

he 37-year-old male passenger who died after a single-vehicle crash on Richmond’s “Misery Mile” on Tuesday has been named by his family as Raji Kaila, of Delta.

Police have yet to officially release the identities of those involved in the crash, but Kaila’s family made the sad announcement on Facebook on Thursday.

Richmond RCMP is now investigating after yet another fatal crash on one of the city’s most notorious stretches of road.

At around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday — at the peak of that morning’s snowfall — police were called to the area of River and No. 8 roads after a report that a car had collided with a hydro pole and slid off the road.

On arrival, officers discovered a white 2006 Acura sedan was partially submerged in a ditch.

The driver, a 45-year old male from Delta, had managed to escape from the vehicle while Kaila was rescued with the help of the driver and good Samaritans.

However, Kaila apparently required life-

saving first aid.

Both occupants of the car were taken to hospital by paramedics but, by late afternoon, Kaila had succumbed to his injuries.

Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be factors in the crash, with road conditions being suspected at the moment.

The Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit (RSU) is investigating the fatal accident.

If anyone has information or dashcam footage on the incident, police would like you to contact Const. George, of the Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit, at 604-2781212.

Workers in the area have repeatedly called for safety improvements to the stretch of River Road, between No. 7 Road and

Westminster Highway, after having to pull stricken drivers from spun-out cars, overturned in water-filled ditches.

The Richmond News reported in September how the City of Richmond — contrary to what the majority of area residents wanted — is planning next spring to install 20 “cushioned” speed humps on the exact same section of road, in a bid to alleviate major safety issues.

Earlier this year, the News reported how, in the last, eastern-most mile of River Road alone, there have been five, driving-related deaths from 2013 to 2016.

One of those deaths was that of 33-yearold cyclist Brad Dean, who was killed in November 2016 after his cycling group was allegedly hit head-on by a car driven by Michael Wing Sing Fan. Fan has since been charged with driving without due care and attention and has yet to make a plea in court.

As part of a city-led consultation process about road improvements, residents had called for more police enforcement of the posted 50 km/h speed limit on the stretch which has long been considered as one of the most dangerous in Richmond, especially for cyclists.

Although taking note of the residents’ concerns about noise and safety caused by potential speed humps, city staff cited that car and truck speeds in the area cannot be tempered by enforcement alone.

And a report and recommendation, approved by city council, described how the proposed humps have been very effective

on the southern stretch of Gilbert Road, close to Dyke Road, without any damage to vehicles, while allowing them to travel at the speed limit of 50.

Along with associated signage, the cost of installing the 20 speed humps is $100,000, which will come from the city’s traffic calming program.

As well as the speed humps, the city has already installed new “single file” signage and dashed, single yellow road markings.

“Caution” signs are also expected to be finished soon, to advise motorists when to expect large volumes of cyclists on the road, usually during weekends.

City paves the way to laneway compromise Alan Campbell

hether it’s in the spirit of Christmas or compromise, the City of Richmond has shifted its position on the controversial paving of a laneway in Steveston.

The Richmond News reported earlier this month how the majority of residents on Richmond and Broadway streets — between No. 1 Road and Second Avenue — were raging over the city’s decision to cement a 15-foot wide laneway through their backyards, to apparently have easier access to its sewer system.

Although the new thoroughfare is on city land and will definitely go ahead – some of it has already started – residents are getting more say on what the new laneway will actually look like.

The city announced Thursday morning a pair of open houses in January, as well as holding an 18-day, online survey on the options for laneway, including paving, green swale (a low tract of land or natural landscape), a country lane or a bikeway.

The open houses will be held at the Steveston Community Centre on Wednesday, Jan. 10 and Wednesday, Jan. 17 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Information boards detailing the options and feedback forms will be available at the open houses and city staff will be on hand

to answer questions and provide additional information.

Public input, said the city, will also be sought on other design measures, including traffic-calming options.

In addition to the open houses, from Jan. 10 through 28, people can go online to LetsTalkRichmond.ca for more information on the lane options and complete the survey.

The city, in its news release, said that, while the consultation is likely of most interest to the residents affected, all members of the public are invited to provide input as the city may utilize this feedback in the future.

“It is important to note that the City has no specific plans to develop any other unopened lane dedications at this time,” the release added. “Consistent with Council Policy 9016, lanes will only be constructed where there is a City-owned lane dedication and access is required for sewer or other infrastructure replacement.”

New condos snapped up by foreigners Census data show non-residents account for 7.6 per cent of all residential ownership in Richmond GRAEMEWOOD Staff Reporter

hile non-residents and foreigners account for just under five per cent of all home owners in Metro Vancouver, they are more frequent in Richmond and snapping up newly-constructed homes — particularly condos — at a much greater rate.

Data released Tuesday by Statistics Canada and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation show non-residents owned 4.8 per cent of residential properties, from Lions Bay to Langley and Maple Ridge and all points between. In Richmond, the rate is 7.5 per cent while in Vancouver it is 7.6 per cent, the highest rate in a Canadian city.

Of the 70,503 units in Richmond, 5,265 are owned by non-residents, thus accounting for $4.86 billion worth of property (6.7 per cent of total land value).

“That is a substantial number, especially because we know this is a conservative estimate” of foreign money in real estate, said Josh Gordon, assistant professor in public policy at Simon Fraser University.

Furthermore, in Richmond, non-residents purchased nearly one in five (19.4 per cent) new homes, built in 2016 and 2017.

Nearly one in every four condo towers that have gone up in the past two years is wholly owned by non-residents, as they account for 23.7 per cent of new condo purchases.

Gordon said more stock should be given to recent purchases as opposed to overall numbers.

“You need to understand their share of the present market. If 24 per cent of the newbuild (condo) market is offshore ownership, that is massive and will have a big impact on housing prices,” he said.

Stats show that the older the home the less likely it is to be owned by a non-resident.

While in Vancouver, non-residents owned properties that were higher in value compared to locals, in Richmond the opposite was true. The average value of a non-resident dwelling was $923,000 compared to local titles valuing just over $1 million.

Non-residents own 4.9 per cent of all detached homes. However, they prefer newer homes, as close to one in nine (11.8 per cent) homes demolished and rebuilt, since 2011, are sold offshore.

Statistics Canada notes the term “nonresident” is often expressed as a “foreigner.”

But a non-resident may nevertheless be a Canadian citizen who lives outside the country and who doesn’t pay taxes. For instance, there are an estimated 300,000 Canadians living in Hong Kong. The data also does not include non-residents who are beneficial owners and who park money in home purchases via family, friends and business partners who are residents.

“The issue with the data is it is measuring foreign homeownership on the basis of where a person’s primary residence is and

not on the basis of where the money’s coming from,” said Gordon.

As such, reaction was mixed to the data.

Richmond realtor and real estate blogger Steve Saretsky also noted the lines may be blurred as to who is and isn’t a resident.

“I have witnessed on the ground many ‘foreign buyers’ are not actually ‘foreign;’ they own Canadian passports,” he wrote on VanCityCondoGuide.com.

He said there are many questions stemming from this latest release of data.

“This is why the debate has begun to focus on where are they earning their income and are they paying their fair share. And what will be considered ‘fair share.’ This is a political hot potato that involves potential changes to

immigration policies and tax laws.

Gordon said non-resident and foreign purchases need to be discouraged via policies. He and other economists suggest an annual property surtax where residents get offsets from income taxes paid and there are exemptions for seniors.

Meanwhile, Juwai.com, a Chinese real estate marketing firm, was reported by Global News saying that the overall impact of foreign buyers on Vancouver’s housing market is not significant, and claiming low interest rates and access to cheap money is the most significant factor.

Gordon notes those factors, unlike foreign buyers in Vancouver and Toronto, exist in every other Canadian market.

n international extortion scheme that convinces people they, or their loved ones, are in trouble has resurfaced in B.C. In July and October, the B.C. RCMP warned the public about a “virtual kidnapping” scheme that seemingly targeted female Chinese National students. The investigation has since indicated that the calls are random and are being sent out to both Mandarin- and English-speaking people, say police.

The scam works like this: the victims receive a random automated call in Mandarin from what appears to be a Chinese Consulate-related phone number.

“This is a notice from the Chinese Embassy.

You have a document that has not been collected for a few days,” reads the message.

“Please bring relevant identifications while attending the embassy. Today is the last day to collect. If you need further inquiry, press one.”

Upon returning the call, a person posing as a government official or police officer poses a series of questions to the victim. Using that information, they shape the scheme.

“In some of the cases, as we have seen in the virtual kidnappings, victims are being instructed to isolate themselves and avoid the Canadian police,” said RCMP S/Sgt. Annie Linteau.

“When they do so, their families in China are contacted and extorted for the return of their loves ones.”

If they don’t have family abroad, they’re told they’ve been implicated in an investigation in China and must pay a fee to resolve it.

Mounties advise people to hang up.

Richmond man has been arrested in an ongoing investigation into a rash of home break-ins in Vancouver and Burnaby.

Police launched the Project Lights Out investigation in early November after several residents reported having their homes ransacked in robberies.

“It appears that suspects were circling neighbourhoods looking for potential targets,” said VPD spokesman Jason Doucette in a news release. “They would knock on the door, and when no one answered, they forced entry.”

On Nov. 30, four people were arrested in the first spate of break-ins and, as a result of the continued investigation, additional suspects were identified.

Four more people were arrested on Dec. 5 after police watched them allegedly break into homes in Burnaby.

Two counts of break-and-enter have been approved for Richmond’s Corbin Neil Thomas, Burnaby’s Kim Adam Carter, as well as Vancouver’s Jerome Anthony Wood and Dwayne Nathan Dennis.

ringing down child care costs — especially to a proposed $10 per day — will be a complex undertaking that requires a “paradigm shift” in how Canadian society values early childhood development.

So says Heather Logan, a member of the Richmond Child Care Development Advisory Committee.

Logan, a long-time Richmond resident and mother of two elementary school children, says initial costs will likely be the biggest hindrance to affordable child care.

“It’s expensive and it’s not interesting to a lot of people, unless you have small kids.

But at the end of the day a lot of people don’t realize how many people are not working because they cannot afford childcare,” she said.

Logan says corporate taxes should be raised to pay for the initial costs of subsidized child care. However, she believes the long-term economic benefits will counter such measures, as parents return to work full time.

Overcoming the idea of raising taxes in an economic system dominated by neoliberal thinking means society will need to recognize the value — social, economic or otherwise — of child care, she said.

“There needs to be a paradigm shift in valuing child care. It’s not just babysitting.

They say from birth to four-years-old a child has learned more than they’ll learn from

four to 12, in terms of sense of self, empathy, sharing, that sort of thing,” said Logan.

A significant lack of recognition from the public at large is granted to the work early childhood educators (ECE), said Logan.

This is reflected in their wages; while ECEs are educated in their field and receive accreditation, their wages hover around $15/ hour.

“Many early childhood educators will spot a learning disability or behavioural issue before the child enters school. They give children the best chance at a good life.

Teachers (in the public school system) are overworked — they may not be able to spot a learning challenge or behavioural issue until it’s too late,” said Logan.

Her experience in child care comes mostly from putting her own kids through Treehouse Early Learning Centre in Steveston, which she believes should be the standard for child care.

“The teachers (early childhood educators) there had an amazingly positive impact on both of my kids,” said Logan.

“We adopted my daughter from China, and at 2.5 years-old we brought her home. We believed there were some learning disabilities and we had challenges, but I can never thank the teachers at Treehouse enough for the work they did with her. My daughter began to blossom right before our eyes,” she noted.

According to a City of Richmond survey of parents, the average (mean) infant child care fees are $1,271, while toddlers are charged $1,220.

Logan said the affordable child care plan needs to come from all levels of government. On the municipal side, Logan said the City of Richmond has done well to provide more spaces, however it could do better by asking more from developers.

“These developers are getting away with, I think, good deals in terms of how much space they allow for child care centres or parks or community amenities. Because once the land’s gone it’s gone,” said Logan.

Provincially, Logan has volunteered with the Coalition of Child Care Advocates of BC, which is an advocate for a $10/day child care proposal that has the verbal support of the new BC NDP government.

The plan is expected to cost $1.5 billion a year, according to Premier John Horgan.

But the Coalition claims that for every public dollar invested in quality child care, $2.54 will be returned to the economy.

The Coalition also notes about $500 million would be returned as tax revenue from operators, workers and working parents.

Also amongst the economic benefits cited is a potential savings of $600 million annually for B.C. employers, due to absenteeism, turnover of employees and lower

productivity from workers who are parents struggling with child care arrangements.

“I’m all for a Mom or Dad who can afford to stay home and raise their children, but the reality is both parents need to work,” said Logan.

She also notes that child care costs and overall unaffordability experienced by an increasingly pinched middle class can impact birth rates.

“Housing is unaffordable, transportation is unaffordable. People have no time. It would be horrible if couples stopped having children because it’s too expensive and out of reach,” she said.

Logan said the plan needs to be implemented now and not over 10 years, as indicated by Horgan.

“And it doesn’t even need to be $10. It could be a little more,” she said.

t’s a tragic trend that seems to repeat itself during the Christmas holidays each year.

Between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day alone, an average of 340 people are injured in 1,200 crashes on B.C.’s roads; that’s 22 crashes and six people injured every hour.

“With many people travelling to spend the holidays with family and friends, drivers should be prepared for the varied winter road conditions they’ll encounter,” said Lindsay Matthews, ICBC’s director responsible for road safety.

“We’re asking drivers to also consider their own behaviour on our busy roads by driving smart. If we want everyone to arrive safely — we need to start with our own driving,” added Matthews.

New shovelling bylaw in effect

W

ith some frozen snow still kicking around and more of the white stuff forecast between Christmas and New Year, the City of Richmond is asking its residents to take some common sense steps to prepare themselves, their homes and vehicles.

n Prepare your property for snow

Clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to your property. The new Bylaw 5870 requires residential (single-family and multi-family) owners and occupants, as well as commercial and industrial properties, to remove snow and ice no later than 10 a.m. every day; Shovel snow onto your lawn, not the street.

Shovelling snow onto the street is a hazard for vehicles and creates more work for snow plows, slowing down the clearing process — it also increases the chance that snow will be pushed back onto your driveway; Look for street storm/drainage grates in the roadway in front of your home and clear away debris such as fallen leaves, branches and snow. Take care not to bury these storm grates or gutters when shovelling snow; If salt or de-icers are left to sit on new concrete (poured within one year), they cause repetitive freeze-thaw cycles that lead to surface spalling (water crystalizing in pores.) To avoid costly repairs, do not use salt or de-icers on new concrete. Follow

manufacturer’s instructions; which typically state not to use salt on new concrete; use sand instead; If you have a fire hydrant in front of your home, clear the snow around it for easy emergency access; If possible, park your vehicle in your driveway; Talk to your neighbours about all parking on one side of the road. Keeping one side curb-free allows for better snow plow access.

It also helps avoid possible snow pile-up on your car from the snow plow; Keep curb free from debris and bins.

Remove any decorations, garbage, recycling and organic bins off roadways where snow plowing may take place.

n Ensure vehicle is safe

Install good winter tires on your vehicle; Keep your gas tank full; Ensure all lights and defrosters are in good working condition; Replace windshield wipers with ones especially designed for icy weather; Top up your vehicle’s reservoir with winter window wash fluid; Check your vehicle battery — a vehicle with a weak battery won’t start in the cold; Leave 50 metres distance between your vehicle and the city’s snow clearing equipment.

L

ately, I’ve been focusing on money. How to save it. How to spend it wisely. And how to get more of it. Then, last week, I attended a talk by Simon Jacobson, author of the bestseller Toward a Meaningful Life.

I’ve read the book, and it’s truly a remarkable and inspiring read. As a speaker, Jacobson has a very low-key, humorous manner, but his message always packs a punch.

Last week, he gave a talk here called “Is your self-worth defined by your net-worth?” which captured something far more important than the essence of money.

It expounded upon the intrinsic value of giving to charity. Jacobson told a true story about the famous and wealthy 19th century philanthropist, Moses Montefiore. In a meeting with Queen Victoria, Montefiore was said to have been asked about the precise amount of his personal wealth.

He told her a number, and she disputed it, claiming to have heard that he was much wealthier than that.

He replied that his real worth was what he gave away to others, because its benefit would live on. The takeaway from this story is that our self-worth is defined by what we give, not what we have.

This was a valuable reminder of the importance of sharing our ‘wealth’ with

others, no matter the circumstances.

The adage that “it is better to give than to receive” is far more than just a saying.

In some religions, giving to charity is considered an obligation; a duty incumbent upon every single person, regardless of their status.

To this end, anyone who gives to others is considered a philanthropist of one kind or another.

It’s the sharing of wealth or time or resources that qualifies one as a “giver.”

And no special eligibility is required.

Except a good heart. We don’t need to be millionaires to help others.

We just need an attitude of fairness, love, justice and righteousness. The amount we give is inconsequential. It’s the act of caring for the welfare of others that counts.

So, the next time you’re in a position to give, act on it. Whether it be with cash, food, a blanket, or even just a kind word of support, do it. The reward will be tenfold. Which begs the question of whether the concept of altruism is really valid or not. I suppose, if we give charity with no expectation of return, and a conscious eschewing of gratitude, then altruism really does exist. But if we’re doing it for the tax receipt, or the thanks, then it goes out the window.

In some cases, it’s better not to overthink it. Just give. And not just during the holiday season.

The luncheon has become a part of the annual seasonal traditions for longtime customers Coreen and Brian Van Dorp.

“It’s really heartwarming with staff volunteering their time and White Spot donating the food and all of it is for Richmond Hospital,” says Brian. “Our hospital is very important, especially as you get older.”

“It’s a great way to give back,” adds Coreen.

Charlie Tsang, general manager of White Spot Richmond Centre, says the first Christmas luncheon took place in 2001. The owner Prakash Ganatra, who passed away in 2015, had come up with the idea of opening the restaurant on Christmas Day and credited staff for efforts to raise money for Richmond Hospital Foundation.

The Christmas event became a huge success and quickly garnered momentum as current staff and even former employees or students returning home from abroad enthusiastically volunteered to work the Christmas Day shift.

“It’s busy. The minute that door opens, the place is packed and it stays busy right until the end,” says Brian. “There’s a lot of staff here that day. It’s a very festive atmosphere.”

White Spot Richmond Centre will open its doors from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 25 with all staff time, tips and net proceeds donated to Richmond Hospital Foundation.

With support for the event from restaurant owner Veena Ganatra and White Spot president and CEO Warren Erhart, net proceeds from the annual fundraiser have totaled more than $120,000 since 2001.

“Just imagine if every restaurant in Richmond did that for one day,” says Coreen.

wo Richmond companies have been awarded for their outstanding dedication to improving employees’ working conditions and lives, and making contributions to society.

Nature’s Path Foods, at 9100 Van Horne Way, was recognized among Canada’s top 100 employers by Mediacorp Canada Inc – the only Richmond company on the list.

Meanwhile, another company, Ideon Packaging, at 11251 Dyke Rd, was crowned Outstanding Workplace of the Year at the Richmond Chamber of Commerce’s 2018 Richmond Business Excellence Awards.

Both companies said they have put a lot of resources and energy into things outside of profits, such as their staff and the environment.

“There is a sad story behind the fitness program,” said Stephens.

“We had a team member who was our supply chain manager at that time…he had a heart attack and passed away.

“That was a wake-up call. We wanted to encourage our team members to get healthy and be active and fit.”

Stephens said she and her family never calculated how much money they spend on the extra efforts the company has made for employees and the environment, but they always knew it was the right thing to do.

“We want to support the planet, we need to have a profitable, growing business and we want to treat our employees with compassion and respect, and create an engaging work place where they can thrive.

“Always leave the soil better than you found it” is the philosophy of Nature’s Path Foods, a company that has been producing solely organic food since its first day of business in 1985.

“We’ve had a triple, bottom-line approach since day-one – people, planet and profit,” said Jyoti Stephens, vice president of People, Mission and Culture at Nature’s Path and daughter of founder Arran Stephens.

This approach is reflected in the company’s many creative polices. For example, it has a free on-site farm for employees to grow their own organic food and provides a “financial incentive” for those who bike, walk, take public transit or use a carpool to get to work – one to two dollars per trip.

In addition, the company provides a $1,000 subsidy for the staff’s purchase of an environmentally-friendly car.

Meanwhile, the company tops up employees’ maternity leave payments beyond government benefits, and reimburses staff for their fitness activities.

Ideon Packaging is doing something unique: sharing 10 per cent of its profits monthly with all its team members — everyone gets the same amount.

And in the past 16 years, the company has never laid off one member of staff since it started.

“It is easy to say this is a slow time of year and that we should lay a few people off, (which is a) bottom line focused (approach),” said Rick Van Poele, CEO and president of Ideon Packaging.

“It’s my belief that if you make decisions based on your bottom line, you will make bad decisions.”

Van Poele owes the company’s success to caring for their people and building a culture around their community.

Every month, the company is shut down for one and a half hours for its townhall program.

During this time, staff share what is going on in the business as well as receive guidance on strategies about how to be more successful, not only in work, but also in their personal lives, according to Van Poele.

In one townhall, Vikram Vij, from Dragons Den, was invited to speak about his journey from India to Vancouver to “help team members have a more fulfilled life,” said Van Poele.

In another townhall, Adam Hart, author of “Power of Food,” spoke about nutrition and keeping the body and mind healthy. The company gave each employee an hour of one-on-one consultation with him.

“Ideon put $20,000-plus into these two townhalls…many leaders ask, ‘why would you spend the money?’ added Van Poele.

“I always say, if we helped one or two team members see life in a more positive way; that is a huge win.

“If we are successful in taking care of our employees, they will be empowered to turn around and take care of our customers.”

ichmond firm Transoft Solutions has formed a new training partnership with York University in Ontario to help educate the next generation of transportation professionals.

Transoft’s flagship AutoTURN product is used by a majority of North American departments of transportation to check space allocations for vehicles as they conduct turning maneuvers.

It also has cutting-edge software utilized in intersection design, roundabouts, roadway signage and traffic analysis.

ne of Richmond’s leading figures in business has been appointed to the Bank of Canada’s board of directors.

Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau announced Thursday that Peter Dhillon — chair of the Ocean Spray board of directors and president and CEO of the Richmond-based Richberry Group of Companies — would be joining the board, along with the reappointment of Monique Jérôme-Forget, who is a special advisor to a leading Montréal business law firm.

“Both appointees have notable track records in their respective fields,” said Morneau.

“I offer them my congratulations and wish them great success in their role at the Bank of Canada.”

Dhillon currently plays an active role on many local and regional organizations and boards, including director of Vancouver Airport Authority and board of governors of Simon Fraser University.

How do you stir the local economy in a big way at this time of the year, beyond the holiday shopping and eating? How about attracting over 140 out-of-town teams to the city to participate in three tournaments over a 14-day stretch?

That’s what Richmond Minor and Seafair hockey associations are pulling off during the Christmas season thanks to a tremendous group of volunteers.

The tournament frenzy started last weekend with the Marriott Winter Classic which featured 39 Bantam, Midget and Juvenile “C” teams.

Next up is the massive 37th annual Richmond International Bantam Midget Tournament which gets underway on Tuesday. Richmond Minor’s showcase event only keeps growing with 75 teams slated to participate in six different divisions.

Among the entries, over 40 are from outside Metro Vancouver, resulting in a flurry of business for local hotels and restaurants. The Major Midget Division will once again feature the U16 Hungarian national team. A Boxing Day meeting with the Moose Jaw Generals at Minoru Arenas’ stadium rink at 7:15 p.m. follows the opening ceremonies.

The RIBMHT concludes with the six division finals on New Year’s Eve. The minor hockey feast will then wrap up with the 16th annual Trail Appliances Hockey 1-4 Tournament, starting Jan. 5 at the Richmond Ice Centre.

This grassroots event features players as young as four playing

their first-ever organized games in Hockey 1, up to eight-year-olds participating in Hockey 4. It is once again completely sold out with 47 teams, representing 10 minor hockey associations, slated to participate.

What makes this tournament unique is it always has been cohosted by Richmond Minor and Seafair.

Next season, the two longtime rival associations will be merging as one and no doubt continuing this popular event.

Shawn Hill has been involved in the 1-4 Tournament for the past eight years and now serves as Seafair’s co-chair, along with Richmond Minor’s Wendy Strandt. He also sat on the merger committee and is part of the new executive that is already working on the inaugural 2018-19 season.

“One of the goals of this tournament when it first started 16 years ago was to bring the two associations together,” said Hill. I like to think that in some small way that has happened over time.

One of the event’s features is each player is presented an official tournament hoody. That’s 750 in total.

Drinks and snacks are also provided after each game, along with other giveaways. There is a popular raffle for gift baskets thanks to generous donations from local businesses.

Strikers in driver’s seat for first place finish Mark Booth

A

n outstanding first half of the season has the Richmond Strikers closing in on a Provincial Cup berth.

The U14 Metro girls soccer team enters the holiday break with just one loss in 15 games (12-2-1) and a six-point cushion on second-place Fraser Valley Selects. The first-place finisher in the Metro Selects League automatically advances to the Provincial “A” Cup Championships in July. Richmond happens to be hosting next year’s event.

The impressive run comes with the Strikers playing with limited player availability throughout the season.

“For the whole time we have not had a full roster other than one game,” said Richmond coach Mandhir Punia. “They are just getting to that age where there are injuries from doing many other things as well. These are busy girls.”

The Strikers’ emergence into a league powerhouse is part of the process according to Punia.

The team has always been sound defensively and plays with composure under pressure. Now it has made significant progress in the final third of the field with more scoring chances and goals.

Richmond leads the league with 37 goals for and has surrendered just four — easily the best in both categories.

It’s the contribution from everyone that has the coaching staff pleased — even more so than the win/loss record. It reflects the Richmond Girls Soccer Association’s overall development model of providing a depth of talent at each age group.

The Strikers will be looking to hold off Fraser Valley and their longtime nemesis Central City Breakers who currently sit in third place — eight points back. Richmond defeated its Surrey rival twice this season, including a 1-0 triumph early.

With all the success on the field, the girls are thriving off of it as well — in the classroom and community.

“They are volunteering their time at a variety of events and we have always stressed how important academics are, even more so than soccer,” added Punia. “These girls are in French Immersion, the IB program at Boyd and other specialized programs. All of them are excelling.”

Defending U16 Coastal and Provincial Cup champion Richmond F.C. are off to a solid start at the U17 level this season. The girls enter the break in second place with a 6-3-2 record — eight points back of the Port Coquitlam Castillians but with two games in hand.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother Dorothy after a courageous battle with cancer on December 10, 2017. Predeceased by her husband Len Fraser, parents Paul & Veronica Ross, sister Emma and niece Debbie, Dorothy is survived by her children Lee (Callum), Sandy (Dan), Doug (Gretchen), Wendy (Darren) and Vicki, her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many extended family and friends.

Dorothy was born in Meadow Lake SK where she grew up on a farm with her loving family of 9. She moved to Prince George where she met the love of her life, our Dad Len. Growing up in PG then Richmond, our home was a place of laughter, mischief and unconditional love.

All our friends wanted to hang out at our house due to Dorothy’s warm and loving nature. She always had time for sewing, knitting and especially her family. She eventually settled in Ladner many years ago and lived with, and was cared for by Vicki until her untimely death.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 in Ladner (details TBA). In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Delta Lifeskills Society or a charity of your choice.
