ast summer I was in Ottawa with my kids visiting a good friend. One night, we took in the impressive sound and light show on Parliament Hill in honour of Canada 150. On the way back, we passed what looked like a bunker stuck in the side of a hill.

Well, in fact, it was a bunker stuck in the side of a hill — at least it was supposed to look like one. It was the Canadian War Museum, designed to give visitors a sense of what people (the lucky few) would be hiding in during an air raid or some brutal attack.

As we passed, my friend said the museum had an impressive special exhibit on Vimy Ridge. The next day of our trip was already planned, but for some reason my son was particularly keen on seeing the exhibit — so keen, in fact, he was willing to get up at a decent hour to make it happen. No small feat for a young man who loves to sleep in.

The Vimy Ridge exhibit was indeed moving, as was the rest of the museum, which is “designed to emphasize the human experience of war,” as the brochure says.

As we toured the World War II displays, we talked about the situations soldiers and civilians found themselves in. My friend told of her mother’s experience as a German girl who escaped to Denmark where she lived with her mother in a prisoner of war (POW) camp.

Meanwhile, she said, her dad, also German, had a relatively good life during the war, living on a farm with his large family. They not only had plenty of food, thanks to the free labour that came by way of French POWs, they also enjoyed other advantages — his father being a Nazi and all.

My son did a double take.

“Your grandfather was a Nazi?!”

I think he felt a bit like I did as a teenager when I came to the last page of All’s Quiet on the Western Front and realized the sympathetic character I had been rooting for was in fact “one of them” — a German soldier.

If there is one thing war engenders, it’s us-andthem thinking. It’s hard to wrap our minds around how people can do what they do to fellow human beings (think Holocaust, atrocities in Syria and now Burma), but the first step is to see some as “other.”

Tomorrow, Nov. 11, many of us will take a moment to remember the sacrifices made by our vets.

In my silence, I will think of my uncle, who at 16 lied about his age so he could be one of the first to enlist.

But that boy, who later became my jovial uncle who always called me “Hey, Doll!” is one of mine. The challenge is to also think of “them.”

Back at the museum, you can see photos of a blasted naval ship sinking into the Atlantic and hear the actual words of a soldier, one of the few who survived, describe that horrifying moment. It’s powerful and poignant. But it occurred to me that drowning at sea is as terrifying for refugees fleeing war today as it was for one of our soldiers of old.

Us-and-them thinking is what enables torture and destruction in the extreme, but not caring, or not caring enough, is somewhere on that continuum.

This is a time to honour our vets; we do that best by committing to peace and security — for all.

LETTERSto the Editor One failed farm doesn't speak for the whole lot Dear Editor, Re: “Micro farm won’t pay,” Letters, Nov. 8.

Once again, Paul Edwards has brought his plight to the letters to the Editor section and is suggesting that his personal experience is somehow credible data that proves all small farm plots are doomed to fail because his did.

But Edwards’ experience is just that, and it doesn’t represent others.

Who knows if he even did things right?

Maybe he just wasn’t cut out for farming?

Did he do his research prior to starting a nursery a mere seven years ago? (By the way, seven years isn’t long for a new business. It could take more than that to get off the ground and there aren’t many get-rich-quick schemes in farming).

If he did do his research, it appears it didn’t support his current stance or he likely would have avoided purchasing this farm. Instead, he bought in.

A few years of giving it a go doesn’t make him any more of an expert than the “activists” are. The fact that he tried and failed suggests he likely isn’t an expert.

And just because he may not be cut out for farming, it doesn’t mean others won’t be. Many people try things that don’t work for them, but we don’t necessarily scrap the idea as a result.

He tried to grow Japanese maple trees, but when that didn’t work, he declared it a bust.

So now all small farms tie in to that? To his failed nursery business?

Maybe location was a factor. Maybe his prices were too high. Maybe he was inefficient or lacked basic business skills.

There are so many things to consider.

He said his farm was open from April to September — half a year — and he earned $12,000. There’s a saying about what you put into something is what you get out of it.

People starting their own business can expect to grind it out at first and it’s a gradual success that comes over time.

There is pride in seeing that eventual growth and knowing the blood, sweat and tears that went into it.

Again, there could have been factors influencing the success or failure of the business that had nothing to do with the viability of small-plot farming. It may be about customer service or something else entirely.

Activist is not a dirty word, nor is failure. Most learn and grow from failed attempts....maybe not Japanese maple trees, that’s all.

A strong Wills Variation claim from a spouse

Last week, the B.C. Supreme Court released reasons in the case Unger v. Unger Estate. The claim was from a disinherited wife of 34 years, for a portion of her late (second) husband’s Estate.

The claim was against the Estate and her late husband’s four children (from his first marriage). The husband’s Will had cited a reason for the disinheritance of his wife, namely that he had given her a 50% share of their home without any contribution from her. Though there was a six-month separation, followed by a reconciliation, the Court’s decision focused on the legal duties that the deceased owed his wife, and the moral duties the deceased owed the wife and the children.

The Court considered the age of the surviving wife (80 years) and her needs for the remainder of her life.

Therefore, because of the duties owed to the wife, she was awarded 30% of the Estate.

In this case, I think the Will could have been worded differently. In particular, the reasons for the wife’s disinheritance could have been described in greater depth. However, a 34-year marriage is a lengthy one, and the surviving spouse here did make contributions to the marriage, including looking after the deceased as his health declined. Thus, disinheritance was not likely to succeed here.

How city hall Mall tribute ought to work steller

To a fallen brother Written by Leon Arthur Lalonde in 1916 shortly after receiving news that his brother, Maurice Chevrier Lalonde, was killed in action April 5, 1916.

He was in the Royal Flying Corps. in the UK when he was notified that his brother, Maurice Chevrier Lalonde, who had made it through Passchendaele, was killed at Arass while in charge of a three-man machine gun crew.

All three soldiers were killed by a direct hit from an enemy shell. I was named after my uncle.

Dear Editor, On Monday, we were at the Richmond Centre for some shopping and to look for poppies.

At the main information desk, we found the poppy box but were pleasantly surprised to also find one of the best indoor Remembrance Day tributes I have ever seen.

There, we signed our name to a sealable poppy, peeled of the back and attached it to one of the small replica crosses or headstones.

I think the concept was outstanding and kudos to those who thought of it, created it and put it all together.

As a vet, I appreciate the honour and know others will, too.

Dear Editor, Re: “Invasive aquarium plants threaten Sturgeon Bank,” News, Sept. 29.

I have just come through a process with the staff, the mayor and councillors at Richmond City Hall that demonstrates how city hall should work and would like to share my experience with your readers.

I live in Mariner's Village on the West Dyke in Steveston where we have been dealing with the very serious issue of an invasive species called Brazilian elodea. We first detected the presence of this aquatic plant in March, 2014 and immediately brought it to the attention of both the city and provincial authorities. The province has a program for invasive species called Early Detection and Rapid Response designed to deal with precisely these situations — an isolated outbreak in a confined space — rapidly, thus keeping B.C. free from this invader. Washington and Oregon are both infested with elodea.

Unfortunately, the previous government let things slide and we found ourselves no further ahead on the “Rapid Response” after three years of early detection.

We took our story to the Richmond News , we met with our local MP, we pressed for a site visit by both Richmond and provincial staff and we met with several city councillors. Everyone gave us feedback and support. City staff prepared a report on the matter for the general purposes committee this past Monday. A group of 25 Mariner’s Village residents attended and spoke to mayor and council.

After the formal discussion, we were invited to meet with city staff to answer any further questions.

We still need to get the NDP on board. But l'm hopeful our leaders will take quick action and that a longer-term plan will be in place early in the new year.

Nuclear war could silence us for good NADINEJONES Contributor

ver since the first caveman coveted his next cave neighbour’s possessions and hit him over the head with a cudgel so he could retrieve his loot, there has been conflict.

The milestones in the history of mankind are measured by wars, not by good deeds.

The Battle of Hastings in 1066, the Trojan War, the Hundred Years War, and the rest of them, were all just dates in our history books until WWI (the ‘war to end all wars’), and WWII, which affected some of us personally.

And let’s not forget the numerous international conflicts in the intervening years, where so many more young people died for a cause.

It was when King George V of Britain, in 1919, proclaimed a two-minute silence to remember “the glorious dead” of WWI, that the remembrance movement began. The addition of poppy sales, sombre parades, and the laying of wreaths at cenotaphs has since provided further opportunities to remember.

But let's not forget that dead means no longer alive — dead, with the attendant grief and suffering of those left behind.

Blindness, insanity and dismemberment

are also a few results of war when death hasn’t been kind. Do we include those things in our remembering?

All the poppies gathered together from all over the world couldn’t bring back one dead soldier, nor would all the two minute silences or all the wreaths placed at cenotaphs. So wouldn’t it be better to have no dead soldiers, instead of glorifying the young healthy men and women moldering in foreign soil?

That should make us think of peace. But do we think of peace during the two-minute silence? Do we think of peace while wearing our poppy, which provides funds for the Canadian Legion to fulfill its mandate to look after the welfare of veterans?

Do we respect the meaning of our poppy enough not to throw it on the ground to be trampled underfoot on Nov. 12?

On Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., for those who choose to stop and remember, perhaps we should consider using that time to think about how we can protect and promote peace.

The time has come to use both our individual and collective will to speak out, and stop the kind of aggressions that lead to death. If we don’t, the caveman next door may let his finger stray to the red button.

And if that happens, our world may have much longer than a two minute silence.

here are fewer, and smaller, mansions being built on protected farmland six months after a new bylaw ushered in new development restrictions, according to a report by City of Richmond staff.

On Tuesday, city councillors had different reactions to the review after hearing from landowners and small-scale farmers, who also had differing views on house sizes on the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR).

The majority on the council committee agreed more data and public consultation are needed before a formal review is taken.

Staff were also asked by the committee to examine other options such as limiting the maximum house size to either 6,500, 7,500 or 8,500 sq.ft. and restricting the maximum house footprint to 5,200 sq. ft.

“Is it (the bylaw) considered successful? I don’t think so. There are still big houses and we should certainly look at them,” said Coun.

Coun. Alexa Loo suggested the issue be revisited in another 18 months, and Coun. Bill McNulty also called for an extension to gather more information.

The new bylaw established a 10,763-square-foot limit on house sizes and limited the amount of land used for all residential upgrades (the ‘home plate’), in a bid to address growing concerns that mega mansions on ALR land are driving up land prices and making it unsustainable for those who want to actually farm.

The report shows that since early April, 11 building permit applications for residential construction on farmland were received.

This is a drop from 45 during the first three months of 2017 (albeit this period marked

a flood of applications due to the impending bylaw).

Since April, the average size of homes is 8,192 sq. ft., which is lower than the 10,408 sq. ft. average between 2010 and 2016.

But even with the 21 per cent drop, questions by councillors remained regarding the footprint and size of houses.

As well, the cost of farmland in general, is still viewed as too high for many who want to farm, which has lead to the suggestion of farmers leasing land. This has been proposed at both the civic and provincial levels.

“The more land leased, the more will be farmed,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

But the question of leasing sparked a heated debate at the meeting between farmers, farm advocates, developers and land owners.

Kush Panatch, an ALR landowner and developer, said many owners want to lease out their land to farmers but can’t find anyone.

“I put up ads on a website to lease a piece of land for $250 per acre and didn’t receive a single request in six months,” said Panatch.

He argued there are not enough people interested in farming in Richmond and further restricting house size would not change that.

However, two farmers who are farming fulltime on leased land in Richmond said leasing land in the municipality is very difficult.

“We knocked at people’s doors and got rejected most of the time. And we often encountered a language barrier. We know many young farmers who want to lease land to do farming here,” said one farmer.

“Farming is profitable..but the fact that we have to renew the leases every year puts us farmers in a very vulnerable situation.”

She added, that because their businesses depends heavily on a good relationship with the landowners, many farmers are afraid to speak up on these issues.

Family of killed cyclist to lobby government Alan Campbell

he outraged parents of a killed cyclist are preparing to lobby B.C.’s Attorney General over Crown Counsel’s decision not to press criminal charges against the driver involved in their son’s fatal crash.

Brad Dean’s father, Tom, is talking to family lawyers about putting pressure on Attorney General David Eby after Crown informed him last week that it would only be proceeding with a charge of driving with undue care and attention against Michael Wing Sing Fan. Brad Dean, 33, was killed on Nov. 6 last year after Fan allegedly plowed head-on into a group of six cyclists on a notorious stretch of River Road, where it meets Westminster Highway in east Richmond.

Tom said he was told by Crown about there “being no precedent for these kinds of cases being tried under criminal proceedings.

“I was told that it was too hard to prove and that the ‘case law wasn’t great.’ But if these kinds of cases never get tried under the criminal code, how is that ever going to change?

“It’s quite simple, justice is not being served. We have a couple of lawyers working for us on this and we are going to be lobbying the office of the (B.C.) Attorney General.

“It’s not just us, Brad’s family, there are a number of people outraged at this.”

Tom said he would “absolutely” be willing to risk the driver walking free from court if criminal proceedings failed, rather than see him face the undue care and attention charge, which carries a maximum fine of $2,000 and, under rare circumstances, six months in prison.

“I’d rather have no conviction at all than go for this Motor Vehicle Act joke,” said Tom. “If (Fan) has to pay a fine and get a few demerit points, I couldn’t care less about that; that means absolutely nothing.

“As it stands, there are no ramifications for

Michael Fan.” Tom said there is a wider “duty to this society for (people) to be held accountable for their actions.

“What is Crown Counsel telling people by this decision? As long as you’re not driving stone drunk, you’ll be OK.” Richmond-based criminal defence lawyer Jason Tarnow explained the difference between driving without due care and attention and dangerous driving.

“For someone to be convicted of driving without due care and attention...the court will consider the general manner in which the vehicle was driven in relation to the surrounding conditions and circumstances on the road...”

Tarnow told the Richmond News.

“Alternatively, for someone to be convicted of dangerous driving (under s. 249 of the Criminal Code), it must be founded in evidence that the manner of driving was a ‘marked departure’ from what the court considers to be acceptable driving and part of that analysis focuses on whether the driver had intended to drive (dangerously).”

When an accident happens, and there is no evidence of an intentional “marked departure” from what is considered to be acceptable, the police, added Tarnow, are “left with the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act, which carry lesser consequences...

“Obviously, this can leave victims extremely frustrated when bodily injury and/or death is the result of that accident.”

Tom said he was told by the RCMP that they had recommended criminal charges, although the police couldn’t confirm this to the News.

Fan, who was 19 at the time of the crash, is scheduled to make his first court appearance at Richmond Provincial Court on Dec. 13.

Chinese-Canadian vets pass torch

group of young immigrants and international students from Richmond visited Vancouver’s Chinese-Canadian Military Museum last Sunday. They came out thankful for modern life and democratic rights.

Organized by Wendy Yuan, member of the Richmond Intercultural Advisory Committee, the dozen or so young Richmond residents also attended a Remembrance Day ceremony, where they met with WWII veterans.

“A lot of young people take the life they live and the rights they have today for granted. They don’t know that they can enjoy it because their ancestors fought hard for it,” said Yuan.

“I hope through this visit, they will have an understanding of our ancestors’ contributions. The younger generation need to take over the torch and carry on what they fought for.”

Veterans took the young group for a tour of the exhibitions and explained the stories behind the pictures and displays.

The group also joined an annual ceremony with more than 100 people in attendance, including Richmond’s 100-year-old WWII veteran Thomas Wong, who was the first Chinese Canadian enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

During the ceremony, staff shared three stories of Chinese-Canadian soldiers who never made it home, including Kuon Louie, son of the founder of H.Y. Louie Co. Limited, who served in the air force and died in a bomb run.

“They served the country in the hope that they will be recognized by it. But till they died for Canada, they were still not considered as a Canadian,” said Catherine Clement, curator of the museum.

“The Chinese soldiers believed that if they proved they were willing to fight and die for this country, the country would recognize them in the end.”

In 1947, two years after the war ended, Chinese people were recognized as citizens and granted the right to vote.

“So for Chinese-Canadians, winning the war was a ‘double victory,’” she added.

“It’s really powerful,” said Sean Qu, who immigrated to Richmond 10 years ago from China.

“For many of us, war was very far away.

We had heard of veterans, but we didn’t really know what they went through.

“By talking to them in person, learning about their experiences and seeing the images, I have a better knowledge of that difficult time and feel very respectful and grateful,” said Qu. As an immigrant, Qu said he has a deeper attachment to Canada and feels a stronger sense of responsibility, after learning about the country’s history.

“Now I understand why, in Canada, Chinese are not excluded like in some other areas of the world. It’s because our ancestors fought for it. It wasn’t always like that.”

uncle who served in the Sino-Vietnamese War during the 1970s, Kou has great respect for veterans.

“Many veterans are being forgotten, like my great uncle. But I’m very impressed that Canada pays so much attention to Remembrance Day and pays respect to the veterans,” said Kou. “It even has a museum to recognize soldiers with Chinese ethnicity. It gives me a sense of belonging to this country, and I now have an urge to make a contribution to this land myself.”

Qu said, living in a peaceful time, we can still contribute to the country and defend our rights, in ways such as participating in social discussions, or voting.

he City of Richmond is hoping a letter to the provincial government provokes eradication of an invasive plant on the West Dyke.

Brazilian elodea, believed to originate from a dumped aquarium, has overtaken the water feature — a landscaped drainage ditch — of Mariner’s Village townhouse development, since 2014.

Last year, at a cost of $29,000, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development tried unsuccessfully to remove the plants in a 12-metre section of the 500-metre long canal.

Now, per a report to council, the city is “requesting the immediate deployment of appropriate resources,” as the plants could jump the dyke into the environmentally-sensitive Sturgeon Banks.

Pesticides are not an option.

Meanwhile, strata president Michael Krygier said Mariner’s Village residents are prepared to invest in circulation pumps, as fresh, aerated water is helpful.

Krygier told the Richmond News in September the problem has worsened since the city shut off fresh, potable water into the canal, in 2015, after discovering there was no water meter. Prior to this, potable water was pouring in, then flowing out through the drainage system.

As water costs could exceed $200,000 annually, Krygier said it would be prohibitive for the strata to pay.

However, an engineering report notes a control valve could maintain water levels with little waste and cost.

Krygier said the strata

would like to keep the canal maintained. The city report indicates the parks department could lend a hand in future pond maintenance, but nothing has yet been budgeted.

Krygier said the canal is a home for waterfowl and enjoyed by the public passing by.

Eventually, however, noted the report, the dyke will need to be raised 1.5-metres and widened 10 metres to accommodate for sea level rise within 25 to 75 years. This could eliminate much of the canal all together.

jury has found a Richmond man guilty of the second-degree murder of his wife, following a second trial of the accused in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver.

The jury reached its verdict in the case of James Jian Hua Wu on Tuesday after four days of deliberations.

Wu, who used a cleaver to fatally stab his wife, Jin Jenna Cheng, had little reaction to the verdict as he sat in the courtroom.

The main issue during the trial was the state of mind of the accused and whether the Crown had proven that Wu had the necessary intent to commit murder.

The Crown’s theory, outlined at the beginning of the trial, was that it was a case of extreme domestic violence and that Wu had intentionally killed his wife in anger following a difficult and frustrating period in their marriage.

The May 2014 slaying happened on the second anniversary of their wedding.

When police were called to the scene of the slaying at a residential apartment building at 7040 Granville Ave., they found blood on the walls on the seventh-floor hallway and two bodies, of Wu and his wife, lying at the far end of the hallway. A knife was seen lying between the two bodies with the victim’s head covered in blood and an injury to her neck believed to be caused by a sharp-edged weapon.

the hallway and he responded by crawling on his hands and knees down the passageway.

When asked by police who had committed the crime, Wu answered, “I did it.”

During the trial, the accused called several expert witnesses who testified that at the time of the offence Wu’s mental functioning was impaired and he was in the middle of a “dissociative” episode.

Second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison with a period of parole ineligibility of between 10 and 25 years. A sentencing hearing for Wu is expected at a later date.

Last November, Wu’s first trial ended in a hung jury after 13 days of deliberations, one of the longest jury deliberations ever in B.C.

housands of people are drawn to it like a magnet every Nov. 11 and even more walk or drive right past it every other day of the year.

But not a lot of people are aware of how the cenotaph outside Richmond city hall is prepared for its day in the sun — Remembrance Day. The hand-carved, three-metre high monument was constructed in 1922 out of granite, due to popular feeling after the First World War ended in 1919 and is the traditional memorial for those lost in battle.

The names of Richmond soldiers killed during war are listed on the cenotaph.

Surprisingly, although a detailed assessment of the cenotaph’s condition is carried out annually, it only gets a proper clean twice a year, one of which usually taking place in the days leading up to Nov. 11.

Rebecca Forrest, the City of Richmond’s curator of collections, explained the work that goes into making sure the focal point for this Saturday’s ceremony is in prime condition.

“It gets cleaned twice a year, but we don’t want to do it too much as it may cause some deterioration,” Forrest told the Richmond News.

“We do keep an eye on it, however, and

we’re not averse to doing some spot cleaning at times.

“It is made mostly of stone and it is obviously sturdy. But like anything else, it does wear eventually and the environment can impact it.”

Forrest said the city actually doesn’t use anything too technical or advanced to clean the cenotaph.

“People assume we’re out there with big bristles and such. All we use is water and soft brushes,” she said.

“On the Celtic knot, for example, (top of the cenotaph) we may do a little powerwashing, but we won’t point it directly at it, as we don’t want to harm it.

“We have to be especially careful around the lettering because it is made of a very particular metal.

“The older lettering, from World War I and II, is obviously much thinner now and we have to be very careful around that.”

And although its prominent location lends itself to being more visible to passers-by, Forrest told how pollution from vehicle traffic can also have an effect on the condition of the cenotaph.

The four boulders cemented into the concrete foundation of the cross are carved with the names of four significant First World War battles — Vimy, Somme, Ypres and Amiens — and are a unique design element of the Richmond cenotaph.

very migrant to Canada has a story to tell — and a new society is searching for its first home so those tales can be told under one roof.

The non-profit Pacific Canada Heritage Centre — Museum of Migration (PCHC– MoM) Society formed in 2011 to reflect a broad spectrum of communities, in particular those of Asian heritage.

The society has been functioning as a “museum without walls” for five years, offering educational programs related to the history, culture, and the “living stories” of Asian and Aboriginal Canadians with partners across the country through a dedicated team of volunteers based in Metro Vancouver.

The society’s core mission is to establish a dedicated facility with a dual function as a heritage centre, where communities can transmit and share knowledge across generations, and as a museum, where the stories and heirlooms can come together.

The organization, which operates out of an office in Vancouver, has recently been offered space in Richmond, Surrey and Vancouver.

But, like any non-profit, it relies on fundraising efforts and, later this month, the society will host its inaugural, charity gala to help make that dream become a reality.

One of its directors, Richmondite George Ing, explained to the Richmond News the connection between Asian migrants and those of Aboriginal heritage.

“Aboriginals were obviously the first people here, but then the Chinese were brought in to

work on the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 19th century,” said Ing. “When the railway was finished, around 1858, (the Chinese) were to be shipped back to China, but it never really happened and many of them were abandoned in rural B.C. “The First Nations people took pity on them and took them in. Relationships were developed and some marriages took place.

“The Aboriginal community had lots of land that wasn’t being used and they got the Chinese in to farm the land and the gardens.”

Fast-forwarding to present day, Ing told how someone noticed there were museums and societies for migration in New York and on the east coast, but none in the west.

That was until historian Brad Lee, UBC professor Henry Yu and Winnie Cheung started the PCHC–MoM in 2011.

“As well as people from the Aboriginal and Chinese communities, there are also Filipinos, East Indians and Indonesians,” added Ing. “We want to bring everyone together and tell our stories. Everybody has a story to tell and we want to capture all those stories in one place. Everybody has come to Canada with a story.”

The society’s inaugural gala — titled “From Far and Wide” — takes place Saturday, Nov. 25, at 5:30pm at the River Rock Theatre.

“Many people think containers such as glasses, metals and hard plastics are environmentally friendly because they can be recycled.

“But if you look at their environmental footprint, you will find that they take up so much land, while plastics are much more efficient – 50 coffee bags only weigh a pound.

However, most plastics go straight to the landfill and take up to 1,000 years to be turned into compost.

Rose and his team have looked at substitutes for traditional plastics, including corn and sugar polymers and recyclable barrier plastics.

But those options are either not resilient enough, too expensive or leave too large of a footprint on the environment.

“The sugar-based option looked good, but they were basically from sugar canes grown in the Amazon area. People are cutting down the Amazon, burning the field to grow the sugar cane, and then harvesting the sugar,” said Rose.

In the end, Rose and his team experimented with new materials and came up with BioFlex, which, according to Rose, is resilient, affordable and degrades in landfills faster.

“For each bag of food sold for 20-30 dollars, it only costs 20 or 30 cents extra to shift to our packaging. But you are making a contribution to our environment,” said Rose.

“And our packages are easy for companies to switch to from their previous packages. They don’t need to change their production lines.”

Connaught ready for provincial spotlight Mark Booth

or a number of Connaught members it will be the biggest skate of their lives as the Richmond club heads to Parksville this week for the B.C./Yukon Sectional Championships.

Connaught will have a large contingent as usual with 35 skaters slated to compete.

“For about 10 of them it will be their first provincial championship. It’s a really exciting experience for them,” explained Connaught director of programs and competitive head coach Keegan Murphy. “Just to go to your first provincials takes five to six years of skating. Some of them are only

eight-or-nine-years-old and we are really proud to be sending them. It’s special for them and their family.”

Connaught has developed a reputation for developing skaters at the younger levels for the province’s biggest stage and this year is no exception.

Murphy pointed out how a third of the 24-skater Pre-Juvenile Ladies competition in Parksville will feature Connaught members. The Juvenile Women (U12) division has an even greater representation with seven of the 15 skaters.

“It’s something to be proud of producing that kind of quality,” Murphy continued. “Of course not all of them can be on the podium but just getting to that level is a big achievement. It’s going to be

a fun week.”

Connaught also has a number athletes who will be looking to advance from Sectionals to represent B.C. at the upcoming Skate Canada Western Challenge in Montreal. Among them is Wesley Chiu who has stepped up to the Novice Men’s level after a big 2016-17 season that saw him win silver in Pre-Novice at Western Challenge.

He was invited to a national camp in Montreal and a strong summer of skating earned him a direct spot back to the Western Challenge.

“There are between five to 10 kids with the potential of going to Montreal,” added Murphy. “We think we can come away with a couple of medals this weekend but ultimately you just want every kid to do their personal best.”

McMath cracks top 10 at provincial cross-country championships A top 10 finish in the junior girls team standings for the McMath Wildcats highlighted a strong contingent of Richmond athletes competing at last weekend’s B.C. Secondary Schools Cross-Country Championships at Jericho Beach.

The Wildcats placed ninth among the 29 entries — led by Selin Tasdemir coming 16th overall in a field of 249 runners. She covered the 4.6 km course in 19:56.

Her teammates’ results included: Ashley Maedel (20th, 20:03), Elizabeth Kennedy (72nd, 21:41), Olivia Northrup (21:51) and Sophie James (22:21).

McRoberts’ Kezia Kawamura was 76th (20:29) and Hugh Boyd’s Janelle Tuazon-Cabido was 146th (21:44).

In the junior boys race, StevestonLondon’s Evan De Souza was 22nd among 271 entries. He completed the 5 km course in 18:24. Richmond

High’s An You was 151st (20:30) while a trio of MacNeill runners competed — Everett Ho (20:48), Josh Cahal (21:01) and Miguel Salvador (21:44).

In the senior boys division, Richmond Christian’s Josh Woolgar was 31st thanks to a clocking of 24:59 over the 6.9 km course. McRoberts Ryan Heroux also turned in an impressive showing — finishing 51st (25:51) among 233 entries.

McMath’s Hope Chan led the local contingent in the 4.6 km senior girls race, placing 129th with a time of 21:34. She was followed by Richmond Christian’s Charity Field in 137th place (21:42). The Wildcat contingent also included Morgan Flynn (159th, 22:11), Dakota Chan (176th, 22:37), Erica Siefert-Anderson (182, 22:44) and Danielle Cosco (207, 23:28). The race featured 242 participants.

Richmond Romp attracts 51 teams

I

t will be a field lacrosse invasion in Richmond this weekend.

The Richmond Roadrunners’ eighth annual Richmond Romp will feature a record 51 teams — making it the largest field lacrosse tournament in B.C. Action gets underway Friday night and continues through to the finals on Monday with all three turf fields at Minoru Park, as well as Richmond High being utilized. The event originally began as an eight-team jamboree back in 2008 with two divisions and has grown since.

Age groups of play include: U11 (Tiers 1 and 2), U13 (Tiers 1 and 2), U15 (Tiers 1 and 2) and U18.

The host Roadrunners will have two teams in action. The U18s play at 9 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday.

There will also be a U11 team competing in Tier 2 with games at 6 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. Saturday and 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Three Richmond players are also part of a Langley team in the U13 Tier 1 Division.

Helping make the tournament of this magnitude possible is support from other field user groups in the city that reschedule their games to other venues.

LAMBERT, Francis (Frank) Lloyd July 22, 1930 - October 20, 2017 It is with much sadness and love we say goodbye to our beloved father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather Frank Lambert, who passed away on October 20, 2017 at the age of 87 years. He is lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Joan of 60 years; daughters, Gayle (Richard) and Judy (John); grandchildren, Alissa (Adrian), Christopher; and great-granddaughter Siena. His family in Scotland, sister Morag (Alex) and family; sister-in-law Ella (predeceased by his brother Charlie) and family. Cousin Sally (Chuck) Hazelton; and sister-in-law Dot Hughes and family.

Frank was a loyal member and brother to the Richmond Masonic Lodge 142 for 46 years and Worshipful Master in 1979. He immigrated to Canada from Greenock, Scotland in 1955 where he met Joan (nee Hughes) in Powell River, B.C; married in Winnipeg on October 3, 1957, and Frank became a Canadian citizen in 1969. Working as a carpenter, he joined the Richmond School Board in 1961, where he became the Director of the Building Society and coordinated the building of McNeely Elementary School in Richmond in 1991. Frank retired in 1991.

Our family wish to express our sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff at Exquisicare Manor for their caring, kindness and support given during these last few months.

An honest man here lies at rest, As e’er God with His image blest: The friend of man, the friend of truth; The friend of age, and guide of youth: Few hearts like his, with virtue warm’d, Few heads with knowledge so inform’d: If there’s another world, he lives in bliss; If there’s none, he made the best of this.
