A

part of me wants to groan when I think about more stories debating house sizes on agricultural land. I suspect a few councillors may feel the same.

The issue has plagued local leaders for literally decades now.

What’s most distressing is the feeling that we’re going around in circles. It’s like one of those relationships where you might not have a lot of fights, but you keep having the same one — over and over.

The problem is the two parties are coming from fundamentally different world views.

While everyone, at least those who show up at council meetings, publicly profess to support farmers and farmland, there seems an untenable divide on how to do that. I suspect the reason is because there is also a contingent that doesn’t actually believe farming, on any serious scale, is feasible in Richmond.

As one developer said, “that horse has already bolted.”

We may have had some prime farmland at one point, but the relatively small plots now sprinkled around just aren’t enough to grow anything that could sustain an economically viable industry.

Add to that, the intense pressures on real estate in the middle of a metropolis, and the best we can hope for are some pretty berry plots that create a rustic, farming feel. It means accepting that a “farmer’s” primary income is from their land, not what grows on it.

While I might not agree with the opinion, it’s somewhat refreshing to hear past BC Liberal Minister of Agriculture Norm Letnick call it as I believe many see it: This land may be agriculturally fertile but it’s too rich to leave to farming. If you want to grow veggies, head out of town where land is cheaper.

No one on council says that, but their decisions have put us on that tract and Jian He’s, who aims to promote “farm tourism,” is a perfect example.

Because council was convinced by some farmers that they needed massive, multi-bedroom homes to house their extended family members who help run the farm, Jian He’s 12-bedroom mansion (which has doubled in value since he bought it in 2015 for $4 million) is not uncommon. The trouble is he doesn’t have an extended family keen to tend his blueberries, so he wants to rent out more rooms.

Meanwhile, he says he’s trying to make his farm viable, but blueberries are not profitable and given the cost of hiring pickers, most of his berries rot or go to the birds. He only harvests enough to qualify for the tax breaks afforded to farmers. Now he’s promoting the notion of farm tourism. Which, given his situation, makes sense — but clearly this is not serious farming It’s hard to believe no one saw this coming. Well, obviously many did, hence the interminable debate.

I don’t believe we should be giving up on farming as viable a industry, but if others do, it would be nice if they’d come out and say so.

I would add that, while growing veggies may not make you rich now, they could be the gold bar of a climate changed world.

You can’t eat a marble staircase.

Dear Editor, Re: “Au launches anticannabis crusade,” News, Oct. 20.

I want Coun. Chak Au to leave Prohibition era thinking back then where it belongs.

There is literally zero evidence that marijuana causes any negative ills for society.

Yes, illegalization of cannabis has led to untold negative issues, but look to Portugal for a destroyed society?

Bzzt! Just ain’t so! They’ve legalized all recreational drugs yet are still a vibrant society. They treat addictions as a health issue rather than a criminal one.

In all the millennia of history of cannabis use, the antis can’t find even one death attributed to the supposed poisons in marijuana.

Look no further than last week to find deaths directly linked to tobacco or alcohol use (both legal; I’ve not heard Au rail against either).

Do we truly want the American anti-cannabis culture in Canada, Mr. Au;

where a minor indiscretion of using a relaxing substance can lead to 20 plus years in prison, with no job prospects for life?

Should you have been treated like that for having a single alcoholic drink?

What makes your choice of recreational drug special?

Cigarettes contain multiple cancer-causing agents.

Marijuana has been proven to be an effective cure for several cancers.

Let’s compare two people: 1. Don has a long hard week at work. Friday night he comes home, puts his feet up, indulges in some cannabis. Oops, he indulged more than expected, and fell asleep, giving his body the best opportunity to rest and recuperate from a long tough week.

2. Donny has a long hard week at work. Friday night he comes home, puts his feet up, and indulges in some alcohol. Oops, he indulged more than expected, and got angry, beat up his spouse and kids, then angrily took off in his car, drunk, and killed a family of

six who were heading to the airport to pick up Nana.

You all know these scenarios to be realistic.

I write this plea to request all three levels of government fully legalizes and accepts cannabis. I am a nonindulger who has done his research, so as to discard any indefensible knee-jerk thinking on my part.

Legalize now, without reservation and reap the limitless benefits of a cheap and effective therapeutic drug, of drastically reduced policing (prison) costs, of calmer and happier citizens, and of an end to spurious anti-cannabis rhetoric.

The Court of Appeal on Joint Bank accounts

Our Court of Appeal last week released reasons for judgment in the case known as Kyle Estate v. Kyle.

The deceased (father) died in 2012. One of his 4 sons was named Executor in his Will.

One of the assets the deceased had was a joint bank account, set up in 2011, with his Executor son.

That son used the funds, likely under the assumption that he had joint status and so could use the money as his own, when his father died. Another child challenged the joint status.

At the Trial, the Court ordered the funds actually belonged to the Estate, not the son. The son appealed. The Court of Appeal denied the son’s appeal. The Court held that the evidence at Trial did not overcome the legal presumption that the funds go back to the father’s Estate on death. The son could not establish that the father intended a gift of the funds (though the father had signed banking documents).

Parents commonly add children to their bank accounts as joint account holders. It would help families if parents discussed their plans and wishes with an advisor before taking such a step. Consider, for example, the legal costs of bringing a case such as this up to the Court of Appeal!

Why kill River Road? Halloween scare Dear Editor, Re: Changes to River Road.

I have been following with great interest the recent comments regarding the elimination/ diversion of River Road.

I recall being a member of the Richmond Arenas Community Association and being an audience to a presentation of the construction of what is now the Richmond Olympic Oval.

I recall wondering, and then asking the presenter, what would happen to River Road.

The presenter nonchalantly replied that River Road was no more, and that existing traffic would be rerouted.

I remember proposing at the time that it

would be in the interest of west Richmond residents to do a cut and cover tunnel to ensure the traffic flow that thousands of Richmondites have used every day since my family moved to Richmond in the early sixties was maintained.

Unfortunately, this proposal was met with scorn by the city representative at the time.

I, too, think it is time the city stepped up and presented a rationalization of why the city thought it was appropriate to inconvenience so many of its constituents.

Dear Editor, I would like to add my voice to those who lament the ruin of River Road.

It used to be a quick practical route I would take to go westward to Terra Nova Mall on No.1 Road. Now, it’s chopped up to a ridiculous and awkward roundabout.

This was done for the Olympic facility which could have been better placed without breaking up River Road.

Now there is further development which will prevent it from ever being restored to its original course.

Every time I have to circumnavigate this road, I curse the fools at City Hall who probably don’t even know how dumb that decision was!

too much for us Dear Editor, In the Halloween evening, me and several friends were taking our kids trick-or-treating along Jack Bell Drive in Richmond.

At around 7:30 p.m, there was a group of teenagers setting off fireworks on the street.

Instead of shooting those fireworks skyward, they were shooting at each other.

The explosions and the bright lights scared our kids, and some of them started crying.

The gang then decided to follow us to the intersection of Jack Bell and Harrison, and one of my friends even heard them saying “follow the kids.”

Feeling threatened, she called the police and this was when the gang scattered away.

The police did not come after all because, according to them, this was not an emergency and we needed to call the nonemergency number.

Frustrated, all of us decided to go home and what was supposed to be

a fun night turned out to be a scary and unpleasant evening because of a group of irresponsible teenagers.

I think the city and/or the police should really enforce the regulation of fireworks, and don’t treat it as an non-emergency incident because nobody got hurt or killed — yet.

It was very fortunate that this time nobody was injured by this kind of reckless behaviour.

or anyone who knew Brad Dean, Sunday is going to be an emotional day.

It will be almost a year to the day since 33-year-old avid cyclist Dean was killed after his group collided head-on with a car on the eastern-most section of River Road during a Sunday morning training ride.

Two other cyclists in the six-strong Gastown Cycling Club group, most of whom were from Vancouver, sustained serious injuries in the crash and are still recovering.

On Sunday, the group — along with the Just Giver 4 PD Cycling Club (of which Dean was also a member) — will host its inaugural Ride to Remember, in honour of their injured and fallen friends and fellow riders.

Hundreds of cyclists are expected to turn out at Second Beach in Stanley Park at 10 a.m. for the event.

Among them will be John White, who was one of the cyclists seriously injured next to Dean in last year’s fateful bike ride.

“I’m absolutely going to be taking part on Sunday,” said White, director of the Gastown club, who’s still on the road to recovery after only getting back in the saddle a couple of months ago.

“We’re anticipating a few hundred, depending on the weather; there was about 500 for Brad’s memorial ride last year after the accident.

“It’s not just about Brad, though. It’s an event that allows us to remember everyone whot has been lost or injured while cycling.”

Charges have yet to be laid against the driver of the Lexus that hit Dean’s group who, according to police, were travelling eastbound in single-file at the time.

White said he didn’t want to speak about any potential charges, preferring to focus on this Sunday and to “remember Brad; who was a close friend.

“It will be an emotional day for everyone,” he added.

Asked by the Richmond News if any charges have been laid against the driver, a spokesperson for Richmond RCMP said on Thursday that police have completed the investigation and a report is now being “reviewed by Crown Counsel to determine if any charges will be laid.”

The News reported at the time how the driver, a 19-year-old male from Burnaby, remained at the scene and cooperated with police. He did not sustain any injuries.

The eastern-most section of River Road, close to where it meets Westminster Highway, has been the scene of multiple crashes and fatalities in recent years.

Since the fatal crash last November, the City of Richmond has sought to make that section safer by installing more signage and will soon lay down 20 more speed humps in a bid to slow down traffic.

New research conducted by Metro Vancouver shows the main reason for not composting food waste is the “ick factor,” as well as convenience and lack of information.

“Food waste accounts for about 30 per cent of our garbage and when we put it in the landfill; this creates methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change,” added Brodie.

etro Vancouver regional district will target multi-family residents in its latest “Hey, food isn’t garbage” campaign.

Despite available green bins in most of the region’s apartment and townhouse complexes, too many food scraps are still ending up in the trash.

The campaign, which launched Wednesday, continues to use characters such as a talking watermelon, partially-eaten bagel and cracked egg to tout its message and reach out to multi-family residents.

Although 90 per cent of multi-family units in Metro Vancouver now have a collection system in place to separate food scraps, new numbers show many of their residents aren’t using them.

“Metro Vancouver residents living in apartments and townhouses know composting is the right thing to do, but there are still barriers that keep them from using the green bins in their complexes,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, who is also chair of Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste Committee.

“We’re hoping that by making simple changes to their food scraps routine residents can help us keep waste out of the landfill.”

.C.’s transportation minister is defending a decision to directly award a $350,000 taxpayer-paid consulting contract, saying it would have taken too long to put the work to the public in a normal bidding process.

Claire Trevena said an open competition for the contract to review transportation solutions at the Massey tunnel crossing would have meant work couldn’t begin until January.

“We wanted to make sure we could move on this as soon as possible,” Trevena said Thursday. “If we’d done a B.C. Bid process, going open, it would have taken several months to put together the passage, put it out to B.C., let different organizations come and individuals come, bid on it and then go through this.”

Trevena announced Wednesday her government had hired Stan Cowdell, president of Westmar Project Advisors, to examine whether the aging Massey tunnel is seismically safe and if it should be twinned or replaced by a bridge. The review will cost up to $1 million, with Cowdell’s contract worth $350,000 with an additional $650,000 available to hire specialists in engineering, seismology and bridge and tunnel design where required.

Trevena in September cancelled the previous government’s plan for a 10-lane bridge to

replace the tunnel, on the South Arm of the Fraser River between Delta and Richmond, saying she’d launch a review of alternatives.

On Tuesday, she faced questions from the opposition for having no terms of reference on the review two months later, and no one appointed to do the work.

On Wednesday, she abruptly announced Cowdell’s appointment and his terms.

Liberal critic Ian Paton called the project “rushed, very political and redundant” because the previous government had completed several studies of tunnel replacement options. “It’s been reviewed to death as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

Paton said he disliked Trevena awarding the contract directly, but doesn’t have an issue with who received it. “I think we’d like to see it go out to a (public tender). But I’ve heard from (a fellow MLA) that he thought the (recipient) was a pretty upstanding company.”

Trevena argued her ministry did its due diligence before selecting Cowdell.

“The ministry canvassed widely — talking with the Ministry of Finance, Association of Consulting Engineers, and various others — put together a list of more than two dozen companies and individuals who could do this job, and then went through to make sure we got a good significant number who hadn’t had involvement with the Massey project before, and came up with Cowdell.”

School mural soars into students' view

on Manning is a fairly upbeat person, who already arrives every day with a spring in his step to do his job as principal at Kingswood elementary.

So when he says the spectacular new, 68feet by 12-feet local wildlife mural fronting his school inspires him when he drives in, one wonders if his staff have a daily job peeling him off the ceiling.

Manning, his staff and students officially unveiled last Friday the stunning depiction of life on the west dyke for a bald eagle, which was chosen last year as the new mascot for the school close to Williams and No. 5 roads.

Resplendent with Canada and snow geese, blue herons, coyotes and even an airplane taking off from YVR, the mural was the fruit of a three-week labour of love and a year’s worth of planning by Maple Ridge artist Jason Craft.

“I love coming to this place every day and, looking at this mural every day I drive in makes me love it even more,” grinned Manning.

“As soon as I turn into the school, all my thoughts from home leave me. It’s a great way to start the day.

“I wanted to make a statement (with the new mascot) and make it so the kids are proud of their school. Changing the mascot is sometimes tricky, especially for the older kids, who were used to being the Cougars, so I really wanted all the kids to buy in.”

Before designing the mural, Craft was told that the school wanted an animal that was indigenous to Richmond.

“Last December, I went out onto the west dyke with about 15 kids,” he said.

“We observed all the different animals out there, coyotes, snow geese and, of course, eagles. We took notes of what we saw.

“I worked with the students’ mural committee and then came up with a couple of different designs, with lots of input from the students.”

Craft was also responsible for some of the incredible eagle-themed artwork that now adorns the school’s gym hall.

The News reported in the spring how Kingswood alumni Atheana Picha designed the school’s new logo, complete with an Aboriginal, Coast Salish theme.

group of activists known for, literally, taking dirt to Richmond City Hall, to have politicians clean up their act, are back behind the tractor.

Richmond FarmWatch is hoping the winds of political change will bring better fortune to their cause — eliminating mega mansions and speculation on the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR).

Last May, seven city councillors decided to allow for homes twice the size of Ministry of Agriculture guidelines. Although they agreed to review that decision in six months.

Couns. Carol Day and Harold Steves, who are also members of FarmWatch, are expected to table that review for the purposes of debate and a new vote in the coming weeks.

But Gillanders has little faith in council, considering May’s vote and FarmWatch’s last battle — imploring council to beef up its antidumping enforcement — has seen mixed results at best.

So, members — who range from smallscale farmers, food security advocates and environmentalists — have gone directly to Minister of Agriculture Lana Popham of the new NDP government.

Popham told the Richmond News she, unlike the past BC Liberal government, will consider legislating house size restrictions on farmland as part of her mandate to revive the ALR. “A lot of that will be looking at this specific issue; we’re looking at it for sure,” said Popham, who is concerned Richmond farmland is being used as a speculative land bank with mega mansions being used as tools to drive up land value close to $1 million per acre ($50,000 is considered a viable price).

“It’s made sure in some areas, such as Richmond, that we’ve guaranteed new farmers cannot afford to own,” said Popham.

In May, Richmond council reigned in a nearly lawless situation that led to an average house size of 12,583-square-feet on the ALR in 2015. At the request of many ALR landowners and farmers, including the Richmond Farmers Institute, council voted 7-2 to double the ministry standard (and city staff recommendation) of 5,382-square-feet under a new bylaw.

What’s at stake is two-fold, according to FarmWatch member and south Richmond farmer Miles Smart, who owns a five-acre farm growing specialty vegetables.

“A, you’re paving over large chunks of good, usable farmland — some of the best in the world. Take into consideration farmland is being paved over all around the world. The other concern of mine is by enabling people to basically build castles, it raises the value of the land quite astronomically,” explained Smart.

An independent report to council by Site Economics indicated about a 4,200-squarefoot maximum would keep land values in balance with farmland use.

Speculation is ruining farmers’ ability to function in Richmond, said Smart, who has “chased away several real estate agents in just the past few months.”

ALR landowners “will make far more money selling their land than selling their crops,” said Smart.

As a result, as a newcomer “it’s next to impossible to farm in this city unless you’re leasing land. And when you’re leasing land the rug can be pulled out at any time. It doesn’t make sense to invest in infrastructure and equipment,” explained Smart.

Adding to the burden, commodity prices have generally not kept up with other expenses.

To that end, all farmers agree other measures need to be taken to ensure farming is once again viable in Richmond.

Smart said east Richmond requires better drainage for vegetable farming. While other farmers have asked for government assistance, Smart is of the belief it ought to be the farmers doing the investment.

But, to date, many ALR owners in Richmond have chosen to plant blueberries, which are relatively cheap to grow and are marginally profitable.

“I see Chinese farmers planting (more profitable) Chinese greens because of improvements they’ve made,” he said.

While blueberry prices falter, they still provide enough income to give ALR landowners property and school tax credits. Metro Vancouver has suggested the amount of income generated from farming be raised in order to qualify for a farm tax incentive. The hopes is that speculators would then be less prone to sit on land.

Popham said she’d review the matter as “we need to make sure the tax incentives ensure production.”

Small farm plots are good start-ups for new farmers, as are incubator farms from land trusts, she added.

But, “the biggest barrier is the cost of land.

So we’re starting talk of incentives for leasing,” said Popham.

Another mechanism to rid Richmond of

ALR speculation has taken hold — a ban on foreign ownership, proposed by the BC Green Party.

But it has its detractors.

Gillanders said FarmWatch supports it but, “a foreign owner is no more speculative than a local investor.

Foreign owners do lease land to make it farmable but there’s “a sense” of a waiting game “so they can move in and develop it,” she said.

Real estate economist Tom Davidoff said it’s more than a feeling.

“Of course people will speculate, because they don’t believe the ALR is forever. There is a ton of land and people need homes here.”

As long as people keep moving here, it will be either single-family home neighbourhoods or farmland, he said.

Richmond-Queensborough MLA Jas Johal told the News foreign ownership can be beneficial, such as in the Interior.

“We want to protect farmland . . . at same time private investment is important,” said Johal.

Past BC Liberal Minister of Agriculture Norm Letnick agrees.

He said a provincial ban on foreign ownership could negatively impact pro-ductivity, particularly outside the Lower Mainland.

B&B in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) in Richmond has reignited the debate around the use of ALR, but the farm owner said the B&B is legal and allows him to subsidize the low profits in the blueberry industry.

Activist group Richmond FarmWatch posted one of Happy Farm B&B’s ads on social media last month and commented “We need help.”

The ad states: “Live in a luxurious manor villa, enjoy the idyllic scenery of the city… this large blueberry farm allows you to enjoy the fun of picking.”

Farm owner Jian He told the Richmond News that the three rooms, all of which have farm views, in his 12-bedroom house have been granted permits by the city. But he would like to rent out almost all of the rooms.

“It helps me to earn some income off-season and provides accommodation for those who need it. Otherwise the rooms would sit empty. I think it’s a good business model,” said He. He bought this farm along No. 6 Road for just under $4 million in 2015, after retiring from his cabinet-making business in Richmond. It includes a five-acre blueberry field and a 9,000 square-foot house.

“The cupboard business requires a lot of energy and I was getting old. I thought farming was something I would enjoy doing, it keeps me busy, and it’s a good investment,” said He. Today, his land’s value has almost doubled, but profit from the blueberry farm is next to nothing, He said.

“I have a lot of blueberries, but I can’t find workers to pick them. That’s the problem.”

In the harvest season, all the blueberry farms need workers, creating a labour shortage.

“Picking blueberries requires skills and endurance, not everyone can do it. You can pick for one or two hours, but it will be very boring after that and can drive you crazy,” said He. “When I happened to find a worker, I would

Now, He is experimenting with more ways of making profits from his farm. He has raised 16 chickens, and just bought a new tractor to develop the land near his house into an orchard. He is also making jams and wines with the blueberries he didn’t sell.

“Some people only see me saving a couple of thousand dollars on my property tax, but they don’t see me pruning and picking blueberries for hours and hours in the sun.

“And who is paying for that?”

While other provinces have similar bans, B.C. doesn’t need them because it has the ALR. Furthermore, without providing specific data, Letnick said foreign ownership of farms is low in B.C. But raising the tax incentive threshold is a good start, he noted.

He added that Richmond farmland borders a city and it’s only natural the land will be more valuable.

“If someone wants to farm in areas that have high prices, they may need to look at options such as leases . . . or move north,” said Letnick.

Disagreeing with Letnick is Kent Mullinix, director, Institute for Sustainable Food Systems at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

“We absolutely need to preclude foreign ownership of all agricultural land,” said Mullinix.

“We also need to eliminate speculative forces, foreign or domestic,” meaning a limit on house sizes, he added.

Mullinix is calling for a full review of the ALR. “We need to identify the land that is farmable regardless of size and make sure it remains farmable. Then we need to identify lost parcels,” said Mullinix.

Of course, the solutions are not easy and a bigger picture is at work for the local food advocate and critic of neo-liberal economics ad transnational trade in food.

“We want the cheapest food possible, grown around the word regardless of environmental costs, regardless of ethical costs, regardless climate change costs. And in the process we’ve marginalized agriculture, and put most North American farmers in an unfortunate predicament in that the greatest value of their business is their land.

“They don’t make much money producing food, so their money is in their land and ability to cash out. That’s their retirement. ichmond resident Kelly Hudson likes to make cupcakes, a lot of them.

She is not doing this for herself, but to help people and animals in her community.

On the weekends, Hudson often has special guests — people with developmental disabilities — visiting her to make cupcakes together.

“I was introduced to Kudoz, a platform where people provide opportunities for those with developmental disabilities, to engage in the community and communicate with others.

“I like baking and talking, and thought it would be nice to share my cupcake experience with others.”

Hudson would spend one and a half hours with her visitors, decorating cupcakes and chatting. In the end, the guests will take six cupcakes home.

“The girl who came last Sunday really likes kitty cats, so we made kitty cat cupcakes,” she recalled.

Some guests don’t like to talk, or are not interested in decorating cupcakes. In those cases Hudson would decorate the cupcakes for them and “try to create some conversation along the way.”

“I haven’t dealt with many people that have developmental disabilities before. This has opened up my eyes to a different area of life that I haven’t been exposed to.”

“I really enjoy it, and I truly hope they will learn something from this experience.”

Hudson started helping the community with her cupcakes three years ago, when she became a volunteer of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)’s “Cupcakes to the Rescue” campaign.

“I received an email from SPCA for the ‘Cupcakes’

fundraising two years ago,” said Hudson, who works as a mortgage broker.

“I’m interested in helping animals and I like to make cupcakes, so it’s ideal for me to do both of them.”

“Then I got into it in a very big way, making hundreds and hundreds of cupcakes,” she laughed.

She soon became the top fundraiser of the program in Canada, making 400 cupcakes last year and 700 this year, in chocolate and lemon flavour. A dozen cupcakes can raise about $50.

She makes all the cupcakes at home and stores them in her freezer— sometimes in her neighbours’ since hers gets full quickly. “ I sent out emails to people I know and asked them ‘do you want cupcakes? I will make them for you.’ They would come to my house to pick up the cupcakes and drop off a donation for the charity.”

“I feel good about giving back to my community.”

This is where the Richmond Christmas Fund comes in, to help ensure that everyone can share in the holiday spirit.

The fund, which is run by Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), assists low-income individuals and families, providing them with grocery vouchers, so they can enjoy a festive meal with loved ones.

Children, meanwhile, receive toys, books, and sports equipment, while teenagers are given gift cards.

“2017 marks the 85th anniversary of the Christmas Fund,” said Ed Gavsie, president

and CEO of RCRG. “The program has been part of the community since the 1930s, which is pretty incredible. It shows that Richmond has a long history of supporting our neighbours in need.”

This year, fund registration will be held at the Richmond Caring Place on four Saturdays, beginning Nov. 25 until Dec. 16.

To receive help, an individual must bring picture ID, CareCards for all family members being registered, proof of Richmond residency, and an original document showing they’re enrolled in an approved government income assistance program.

W

hen Bill Chao was cleaning the lobby of a McDonald’s in south Vancouver 35 years ago, he never imagined managing one of the iconic fast-food restaurants, let alone owning and operating four of them in Richmond.

Chao was only 20-years-old at the time and was studying computer science at Simon Fraser University, with a view to be working with the aforementioned technology.

But there was one magic ingredient that Chao hadn’t accounted for while working parttime for McDonald’s — people.

And when he came to the first career crossroad in his life, Chao took a chance and threw his apron into the famous burger joint’s management program, much to the chagrin of his parents.

“I was really enjoying working with people and I wasn’t really having much luck getting a job in the computer field,” said Chao, who celebrated his 55th birthday this week with a Halloween party for his staff at his Alderbridge Way, Ironwood, Blundell Centre and now Walmart franchises, the latter of which opened last weekend.

“My manager, Mick, said to me (at the time) that I should enter into the management program. I was still crew at that time. I figured, I didn’t have anything else going on, so why not.

“I thought to myself, I’ll go through this for a couple of years and maybe get some experi-

However, the moment he embarked on the management program, Chao said it’s clear looking back that there was never any doubt where his future lay.

“I definitely found my niche; I was quickly getting some recognition and promotion in the company, and away I went,” said Chao, who now calls Richmond home.

“I went through the various management ranks from about 1986 to 1998. I managed No. 3 Road and Granville Avenue from 1990 to ’95. In total, I spent about seven years as a manager in different Richmond locations.

“I got promoted to a regional supervisor in 1998 and was there for four years. Then I moved to the national head office in Toronto from 2002 to 2006, where I worked in operations and menus.”

Chao spent a couple of years in Saskatoon, looking after the corporate side of things for the company before his first big jump into the world of ownership.

“In 2008, I became the operator (franchisee) of three locations on the Sunshine Coast; at Gibsons, Sechelt and Powell River,” he said.

“But, in 2014, I had a chance to come back to the Lower Mainland, so I sold the Sunshine Coast restaurants and bought three in Richmond.”

Given that he’s now been working for one of the world’s most famous fast-food chains for most of his life, it’s no surprise that Chao has witnessed and experienced many changes in the industry.

But, when asked to point out the single, biggest change, like any good boss, Chao recognizes what his staff bring to the table.

“I think it would be how much my people deal with today, versus when I started out,” he said.

“It never ceases to amaze me the ability of my staff to make all these things on the menu.”

Amid the vast sea of change, Chao also has a keen eye for the constants in his world of operating a small chain of McDonald’s.

“The value. That can’t change. No matter what changes are made on the menu, we still must provide value for money, good service and, above all, cleanliness. Those things have never changed in my 35 years.”

And his secret to longevity in an increasingly challenging and competitive market?

“I found out very quickly that working with people every day has tremendous rewards,” said Chao.

“For some people, that’s not obvious at the beginning, but it was for me. And I realized that I must treat people the way I would like to be treated. That has served me well.

“It wasn’t the career I was looking for, but I loved working with people. You certainly have to be a people-person to succeed at this.”

In case you were wondering, Chao didn’t dress up as a burger for this week’s party, he went as a cat.

A

breakthrough season has Ryan Reid in Mexico next week representing Canada at the prestigous QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup. The 53rd annual event showcases the top amateur 10-pin bowlers in the world and features nothing but national champions from as many as 90 countries. After coming close on one previous occasion, Reid earned his way to Mexico with a dominating performance at the national championships in Winnipeg, back in July.

The 37-year-old Richmond resident led the tournament by 300 pins which gave him the advantage of having to be beaten twice in the final. He lost the first game to a Quebec bowler then won the second by striking twice in the 10th frame.

Bowling has been a huge part of Reid’s life.

His parents managed a number of bowling centres throughout Metro Vancouver. His mom Miriam was a former national team member who competed for Canada in the very same tournament back in 1978 in Columbia.

Reid and his sister Erin began to play at an early age and dominated at the youth level, winning several Canadian titles and following in their mom’s footsteps as national team members.

Ryan continued to enjoy success at the men’s level but nothing like this season thanks to a new level of commitment and even being involved in the business again.

He manages Lucky 9 Lanes at Riverport which re-opened last November.

“I went to nationals the year before and finished fifth or sixth. I was going through a rough time.

My dad had just passed away and I wasn’t really into it,” he recalled. “Soon after, I made a goal to go back again since my dad was from Winnipeg and we still have family there.

“It was nice. I put a lot of work into this year and all the hard work paid off. I probably bowled more this past summer than most of my life. I lost a bunch of weight, was practising more and was back in the business too. It was like the perfect storm that came together.”

Reid actually came close to representing Canada at the Bowling World Cup before. He finished second to Manitoba’s Michael Schmidt back in 2010. Schmidt went on to win his second world title. Now Reid will try to win Canada’s fifth ever men’s championship.

There will be 24 games of qualifying held over four days. The tournament field will then be cutdown to 24, followed by eight more games. Eight

will advance to the next round, setting the stage for the final four moving on to the televised finals. “(The past three months) has given me time to reflect and compete in quite a few tournaments down in the Seattle and Portland areas,” added Reid.

Approval to merge Richmond Minor and Seafair sets the stage for minor hockey’s new era in the city, starting next season. A board of directors (five from each association) was already formed to begin laying the foundation of the organization.

Now, their work load increases immensely, leading up to the launching of registration for the 2018-19 season in the spring.

The board features some familiar names, including current Richmond Minor and Seafair presidents Carolyn Hart and Nigel Shackles, as well as some who volunteered on the merger committee for the past 13 months.

The directors have made it clear the new association will not only bring together the best from Richmond Minor and Seafair but from elsewhere too, yet always conscious of keeping the sport as affordable as possible.

“It really has become a sport for the high-end player with money. That’s

not what a public minor hockey association strives to be,” said board member Trevor Northrup. “We have to evolve so that we present families with a viable public option to compete at the highest levels. We are going to be doing that. The community will be coming first.”

Northrup and Shawn Hill served on the merger committee before joining the new board too. Both expect the number of volunteers contributing to Richmond-Seafair will quickly escalate.

“It will be 10 for voting on whatever the issue is but when we need to, we will dial in people with more expertise in certain areas and have their input,” said Hill. “We will form a committee and might have one or two (original directors) to lead it. It just will make it easier to get more people involved in things like that. It also will help create a better understanding on how some decisions were reached and easier to support them.”

The new association will feature over 1,200 players, making it the largest in Metro Vancouver and second to only Kamloops in the province. Size will mean nothing unless Richmond-Seafair has the programs and the leaders in place to compliment it.

“One of the mantras of our merger committee right from the beginning

was to make sure we are not just bringing the associations together because it sounds a like good idea.

We are bringing it together because we want to utilize the talents of the people available to create the best association in this province,” said Shackles. “Not just by wins and losses, although those are fun, but the way we look after our members. Our kids, the safety, the time and money we invest in referee development. We want to go and steal the best ideas from everywhere and create the best program in the entire province right here in the city.”

There won’t be a huge season end sale on the current Richmond Minor and Seafair jerseys. The new logo and colour schemes are still being discussed. It might be some time before all the teams are wearing them.

“The plan for next year is to utilize the jerseys we already have. We will need special permission from Pacific Coast Amateur to do so but we can’t see it being a problem, added Shackles. “There are so many questions and we don’t want to spend money we don’t have. We have to be careful.

“Whatever the association is in year one it will be something different in year two, three, four, five. We will not be trying to hit a home run in year one.”
