I

got a fit of the giggles the other day, and not because I was smoking pot — but it was pot related.

I was reading the numerous Facebook posts (and we’re talking a record number) we received on the subject following last Friday’s feature.

More than a few folks were having a good time (in a Reefer Madness kinda way) with civic leaders who fretted out loud about “pot parties” and the general mayhem and debauchery that could follow the legalization of marijuana — which is set to happen by next summer.

One person wrote, “Sure, I’ve seen pot smoked at a party but not an actual ‘pot party.’ I imagine it would be people with a large assortment of fine foreign and local munchies watching and discussing how you have to have a very keen intellect to actually get Rick and Morty. The most violent thing happening was the heated argument over pizza toppings and a cup was knocked off the table.” ...you get the idea.

One person did warn of the dangers to children, but he was quickly countered with a series of wink-wink, nudge-nudge comments that attested to the fact it’s easier for kids to score a joint than get alcohol — because of regulation.

But joking aside, we can’t deny there are legitimate concerns regarding smoking marijuana. Bob Marley died of cancer at age 36. Granted, it was melanoma, not lung cancer. Still, the smoking couldn’t have helped.

And we all have a story of someone we knew who smoked pot and then went on to harder drugs or simply became hopelessly addicted to weed.

But argument-by-anecdote, the old “I had a friend and he ....” or “I’ve smoked lots of pot and I’ve never ...” is a bad way to form public policy. We can find examples on all sides of the issue, and reiterating them only polarizes the debate; you’re either hip to the blaze or going to hell in a hand basket.

As with most things, it’s complicated.

And because it’s complicated, it’s even more important that we look at the body of research and listen to the experts who have studied the data to guide us in the right direction. And from what I can surmise, that direction is legalization.

Health experts, particularly those who work in the area of addiction, are vastly in support of it, as are many law enforcement authorities.

While we can fret about individual cases — and I get that, it’s not just an anecdote if it’s one of my kids — we need to think big picture. Besides, how’s that war on drugs going for us, anyway?

The key is going to be in regulation. And by the looks of it, our city council is all over that. Although, I have to agree with our many letter writers who note Richmond has more smokin’ problems than the odd “pot party.” In fact, it seems a bit suspect that a council that consistently points to “loopholes” or a lack of enforcement resources to explain flagrant violations of bylaws, is suddenly so keen to flex its law-and-order muscle on this issue.

Regardless, we have the best chance of creating a healthy, safe environment by developing evidencebased policies — not by pandering to fear and prejudice. And that goes for both sides.

Recycling works, really Dear Editor: Re: “Wrap up your scraps:, Letters, Oct. 20 and “Let’s go green, without the flies,” Letters, Sept 12.

There are huge benefits to wrapping or bagging food scraps before discarding them.

Clarification

The proposed changes to bus routes reported in the Oct. 25 edition of the Richmond News (“TransLink eyes new bus routes”) were first presented to the public last May and have since been subject to extensive public consultation. Based on that consultation, TransLink says a revised plan will be presented to the public in November.

The bags can be folded over and held closed with a clip until ready for disposal.

Council should research pot Dear Editor: Re: “This Bud’s for you?” Feature, Oct. 20; “City council sticks by antipot position,” News, Oct. 25.

With respect to your recent articles about marijuana legalization, I have both an opinion and a offer to Mayor Brodie and Richmond city councillors.

I am definitely in agreement with Richmond News letter writers of Oct. 25 who expressed dismay at council’s recent unanimous decision to oppose cannabis legalization.

Marijuana as a gateway drug has been thoroughly debunked in a number of studies, although by their logic we should certainly

include alcoholic beverages that are far more dangerous substances when consumed to excess.

After reading your newspaper’s most recent story on our elected officials wanting to ban the sale and production of cannabis in Richmond, I was left wondering what they’ve been smoking if they believe pot is anywhere near as destructive as booze and that Vancouver has pot shops every “few steps” as Coun. Derek Dang suggests?

It is beyond all reason how banning the retail sale of cannabis from Richmond and maintaining its prohibition somehow makes us all safer, especially considering all the other serious issues facing our Lulu

Island community.

In light of the opioid epidemic, I simply can’t understand why they wouldn’t be more open minded in terms of trying something new, versus preaching a “just say no” message and engaging in fear mongering reminiscent of reefer madness from a century ago.

By all means continue to research cannabis and its short and longterm effects along with how its medicinal properties might help alleviate a long list of health problems, from chronic pain to mental illness, before you resort to emotional scare tactics and the status quo.

Legal haze won't make sky fall Dear Editor, First of all, your pot survey presents itself with a negative question. It should simply ask if you think marijuana should be sold in dispensaries in Richmond.

The “near you” part of the question makes it sound threatening.

Who wants any store “near them.” Stores belong in commercial areas, not next door.

I am not surprized that Richmond City Council is against legalization.

We have a large proportion of voters who are resistant to change.

Marijuana is not a gateway drug any more than alcohol.

In fact, marijuana has many medicinal uses. Other jurisdictions have legalized and life goes on with little change, except that the police can focus on real crime, rather than interfering with people’s harmless personal lives.

It is sad that our “representatives” are in a lather over pot when Richmond is faced with many

problems. Pandering to the uptight seems to be more important, at least for re-election.

Legalization will be a positive, not a negative. If adults are allowed to purchase marijuana legally at reasonable prices or grow their own, then the crime element will melt away.

Our streets will be safer, the sky will not fall and the police and city council can then focus on the real problems our city faces.

City's cannabis stance should be applauded Dear Editor: Re: “This Bud’s for you?” Feature, Oct. 20; “City council sticks by anti-pot position,” News, Oct. 25.

I take exception to the notion that because there are various vices in Richmond, which incidentally I detest, that marijuana should be accepted as well.

By this logic, if a person develops diabetes, he or she might as well get cancer too.

I applaud and support Mayor Malcolm Brodie and Richmond City Council, in particular Coun. Chak Au and Coun. Bill McNulty, for their courageous stance in defending Richmond as a safe, drug-free, family-friendly city.

Your efforts will no doubt be remembered by concerned voters come election time.

City staff giving us the bump Dear Editor, Re: “Speed humps on way for River Road,” News and Letters, September and October.

I feel like I have been violated. My life is going to get a whole lot bumpier now.

Every time I leave my driveway I will have to go over five speed humps if I am going east and if I choose to go west, it will be at least 21 — that is just one way and then I will have to go over them all again when I return home.

There is no alternate way to get off River Road.

The City of Richmond sent out a survey to area residents regarding speed humps.

Sixty per cent were against them while 40 per cent wanted them.

I thought the majority rules. The city decided to ignore the majority, so why did they even send the survey out?

I question if city staff would want to go over at least 42 speed humps every day of their life just to get off their street.

A smarter way to bank is coming to the neighbourhood!

n To combat speeding, the City of Richmond is planning to install 21 more speed humps on the eastern most section of River Road.

I have lived on River Road for 40 years. I have seen a lot of accidents and they are almost always caused by the driver.

They are either drunk, speeding or fall asleep at the wheel. I have driven for 48 years without any accidents and now I will be paying the price for someone else’s recklessness.

Our tax money is being spent on this.

I realize a cyclist was killed on River Road last year and it was just down the road from my house.

I do not believe speed humps would have made a difference as the driver had just rounded the corner from Westminster Highway and would not have been able to get up to speed before he hit the cyclist.

Furthermore, living here all these years I have seen many cyclists riding three or four across rather than single file.

They know they should ride single file but choose not to do this, so I question whether they will obey single file signage that the city plans to put up.

I also question how the speed humps will affect the snow-clearing in the winter on River Road?

ichmond Mounties are warning the public to beware of fraudsters suspected of selling fake, winning lottery tickets in

the city.

The RCMP has released photos of suspects believed to be involved in the scheme, which played out last month in the area of Richmond Centre shopping mall.

According to police, on Sept. 26, the victim was allegedly approached by a male suspect, who stated he needed help in claiming the winnings from a lottery ticket.

The suspect allegedly told the victim that he could not claim the winnings as he was an illegal immigrant.

The suspect then showed the victim a lottery ticket — which turned out to be fake by depicting the winning lottery numbers for a previous draw — and offered to sell the ticket to the victim.

A second male suspect then approached, pretending not to know the first suspect and offered to help.

The two suspects then allegedly convinced the victim to purchase the fake lottery ticket and assisted the victim in withdrawing the money from the bank to complete the sale.

The first male suspect was described as approximately 50 years old, with

short white hair and spoke poor English.

The second male suspect was also around 50 years old, with short black hair, but spoke English well. The two suspects were believed to be working with a woman (also pictured).

“The Richmond RCMP appreciates any information the public can provide about these suspects,” said Cpl. Marco Sallinen of Richmond RCMP Economic Crimes Unit.

“We feel the suspects may have committed similar frauds in the past.

Please be cautious if anyone ever attempts to offer or sell you something of great value for a seemingly incredible deal.

“When possible, have the item independently examined or tested, and consider involving legal counsel to complete the transaction.”

niversity of B.C. law professor Erez Aloni says the “only thing sure” about the City of Richmond’s newly-stamped short-term rental bylaw is that “they are very unclear.”

Aloni recently published a statement on UBC.ca outlining some of the pros and cons of regulations surrounding the accommodation sharing economy.

Regarding parts of Richmond’s bylaw, he noted that “the proposal is confusing.

There is a lack of clarity,” he said.

For one, Richmond claims one must “reside” in the home, be it a condo or house, to offer a short-term rental.

Here, it’s unclear if one may take an extended vacation and rent the home while absent or if one must physically be in the home.

Aloni considers it reasonable to allow people to rent their homes on an infrequent basis, especially while absent for a short period.

“It’s a good thing when they maximize their excess capacity,” said Aloni, explaining that some of the nuisances a short-term rental can bring (noise, a disturbed neighbourhood vibe, parking

problems) can be balanced against some of the pros they bring, such as allowing a tourist to see the city in a different way and providing extra money to a homeowner.

But when a bedroom is rented out 365 days a year, this ventures into commercial activity and regulations should be firm and clear.

“As soon as it becomes daily and you have new faces in the hallway every day, that becomes something that is a nuisance that has negative externalities,” he

said. Other jurisdictions in North America are attempting to cap the number of days a home can be used as a short-term rental.

There are no such attempts in Richmond, noted Aloni.

“Beyond that, I also find enforcement lacking,” in Richmond, he said.

For instance, Richmond is not requiring online hosting platforms (such as Airbnb, the biggest of them all) to post a licence number for each rental unit (doing so could prevent duplicate postings, among other loopholes).

“I don’t see how they will enforce it without registration,” he said.

“Vancouver is going through a process where they have to register. You have to cooperate with Airbnb.”

houses to act as bed and breakfasts but with a 500-metre buffer between each unit, thus limiting their numbers.

Beyond that, an owner of a house, townhouse or condo may rent to up to two people, on a short-term basis, under the “boarding and lodging” rules that were established decades ago to accommodate the likes of billets.

Aloni said Richmond’s requirement that a short-term rental be a principal residence is important.

“I think it’s reasonable because it provides some supervision of the regular resident over the renters,” said Aloni.

“One of the fears is if someone doesn’t live there, strangers will constantly arrive, be loud, use shared neighbourhood resources in an unfair way (parking).

“I don’t think you can have serious efficient regulation without” posting registration numbers online.

For its part, the city claims to be looking at this option but has not decided one way or another.

Aloni also said the municipality will need to work with other levels of government to implement tax policies.

To date, they are non-existent.

“I shouldn’t be able to rent for the whole year and not pay hotel tax, all the while not helping the housing shortage,” he said.

ould at least $14 million in donations for a new hospital tower be revoked from the Richmond community?

That’s the question the Richmond News posed to the Richmond Hospital Foundation after MLA Teresa Wat told Health Minister Adrian Dix in a committee meeting last week that more than half of the donations made to the foundation for a new acute care tower have been given on the condition that construction begins in 2020.

“It’s probably not a discussion we want to get into,” said Jon Hicke, the foundation’s spokesperson. “We remain hopeful, it’s just not something we feel comfortable talking about at this point.”

To date, the foundation has raised about $27 million, of which more than half is tied to shovels in the ground by 2020, confirmed Hicke.

When asked why this was made known now and not before the May 9 election, when B.C.’s two major political parties were vying for votes in Richmond with the hospital as a major sticking point, Hicke said “we were waiting for a provincial government commitment.”

The condition may present a hurdle to the project since Vancouver Coastal Health

and the foundation agreed $40 million in donations would go toward what is expected to be a $283 million project.

Over the course of the 15-year BC Liberal rein, hospital infrastructure projects have increasingly depended on the private sector or regional support.

And even an expedited timeline in Richmond could cut things close.

Liberal Wat said in April the government had expedited the concept plan this year in order to potentially commence the business plan this fall. The business plan could take up to 18 months, said Wat at the time.

If that’s the case, a business plan would conclude well into 2019 at the earliest, thus putting a very tight timeline on a 2020 construction start date.

Dix told Wat that, based on the Liberal track record, his NDP government would deliver a faster hospital than what the Liberals would have. But no fixed dates have been announced.

Dix cited a stalled hospital project in Dawson Creek as an example. According to the Dawson Creek Mirror, the mayor of Dawson Creek said in January Liberals had “left voters with the impression the expansion would be complete by 2017.”

To date, construction has yet to begin.

Regardless, Wat noted, Dix has not specified a timeline for Richmond Hospital in his four months on the job.

hortly before the Richmond News published a story about George Gens’ pumpkin patch being looted by thieves driving luxury cars, the farmer took his tractor over to nearby Thomas Kidd elementary school, to donate pumpkins for each student.

Kidd principal took to Twitter Wednesday to post a photo of Gens in the act.

“After what I read in the paper, what’s been happening to him and his fields, I thought I would share it,” said Kathy Pantaleo.

“I went to him a couple of weeks ago saying I wanted to do a school-wide pumpkin carving. I asked if I could buy some pumpkins. He said, ‘No, no, no, no, no, no, no charge.’ I said, seriously, I’ll pay $2 a pumpkin. He insisted otherwise,” said Pantaleo.

And so, Gens got on his tractor and

crossed Steveston Highway with about 160 small pumpkins, carried on a large pallet, for each student. This week, he dropped off even more to make sure everyone had one for the special day.

“He’s just such a nice man. He’s very humble and he doesn’t want recognition,” said Pantaleo.

The News was unable to reach Gens on Thursday.

Gens told the News last week he had to take the unprecedented step of fencing off his pumpkin patch after people began stealing them at night and even at times during the day.

Richmond residents were shocked to learn many of the thieves were driving luxury cars.

Gens has had theft concerns before. Last year, he declined to be interviewed by the News after people repeatedly filled their trunks with his cabbages.

A new Acute Care Tower is our community’s top priority Last week I wrote about the groundswell of community support in Richmond as individuals, business groups, community and seniors organizations made submissions to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services urging the Provincial Government to fund a new Acute Care Tower in Richmond in the 2018 budget so construction can begin by 2020.

I want to share another letter, this time from someone on the frontline of care day in and day out at Richmond Hospital.

Dr. David Li is the program head of the Richmond Hospital Hospitalist program. Along with his team of 18 hospitalist physicians, they are responsible for providing care for up to 130 acute care in-patients daily at Richmond Hospital. Dr. Li has been working at Richmond Hospital for the past 11 years and knows firsthand all too well the urgent need for a new Acute Care Tower at Richmond Hospital. Here is his passionate plea: “Over the past 11 years, I have seen a tremendous growth in the population of Richmond and as a result of that, increased demand on our hospital inpatient service. This level of growth put a significant strain on an aging facility. Our hospital is operating at constant over-capacity and every year during the flu season, we can have up to 30 inpatients waiting for a hospital bed in the emergency department sometimes lasting up to five days.

“It’s no wonder we could never meet the target of inpatient admissions transferred from the Emergency

Department as set out by the Ministry of Health. We simply do not have the inpatient beds to accommodate the surge and the ongoing service demand from our population growth. I know the staff here at Richmond Hospital are doing the best they can to maintain patient flow but after years of over-capacity, it is evident that all of the staff here are showing signs of burn-out.

“It is well known the original North Tower of the Richmond Hospital is considered structurally unsafe to withstand the next earthquake.

Not only are there three units of inpatients located on the North tower but our physician and staff offices are also located on the North tower. We are only half-joking when we say that we are risking our lives by coming to work every day. On a daily basis, there are many surgeries that take place in the operating rooms located on the main floor of the original North Tower. I have been in the operating room at night time during an emergency surgery wondering if the entire building is going to collapse on us. This becomes especially poignant when we hear there are earthquake tremors in other parts of B.C. Are we not putting the lives of the Richmond Hospital patient and staff at risk by further delaying a project that should have been up and running years ago? Who is going to explain to the families of the people lost to a collapsed hospital tower that the losses of their lives are totally avoidable? This is truly a case of lives at stake!

“I ask you to please make a new Acute Care Tower in Richmond a top priority for the sake of the community of Richmond and the staff working at Richmond Hospital.”

Please write to the Premier, the Minister of Health as well as your local MLA to ensure a new Acute Care Tower is funded for Richmond.

group made up of police, ICBC transit officers and volunteers hopped on the Canada Line and buses on people’s way home from work Tuesday to educate them about pedestrian safety.

They were part of this year’s Pedestrian Awareness Campaign for fall and winter, when most pedestrian-related crashes usually happen.

“In the past, we tried to educate people at transit stations, but the message would be lost as many were in a hurry to catch the next train or bus,” said Dennis Hwang, media liaison officer at Richmond RCMP. “This year, we hope to secure a ‘captive’ audience.”

More than 20 officers and volunteers got on a bus or train from Brighouse station, talking to people about road safety, handing out safety reflectors and manuals in English and Chinese.

Some officers helped people put the reflectors on their jackets. Smiles were on passengers’ faces when they received the gifts.

“This (reflector) is very helpful, I got one for my daughter too,” said a passenger.

“Halloween is coming and the road can be very dark at night. The officers are so nice to do this. I really appreciate it.”

There were also officers and volunteers handing out information at stations, and police keeping an eye out for violations at intersections by both pedestrians and drivers.

“Historically, the fall months are the most dangerous times for pedestrian collisions, and Richmond has had its share of serious injuries and fatalities,” said Hwang.

He said around 43 per cent of all crashes that injure pedestrians happen between October and January, as visibility and conditions get worse.

An average of 59 pedestrians are killed and 2,500 injured in B.C. every year.

“Distracted driving and a failure to yield the right-of-way are the top contributing factors for drivers getting into a crash that injures or kills a pedestrian in B.C.,” said Hwang.

s more reports surface surrounding the depth of money laundering allegations at River Rock Casino and Resort in Richmond, the facility’s owner is claiming it has always abided by the law.

Great Canadian Gaming Corporation claims it has “a culture of integrity and transparency.

“Great Canadian follows all procedures required by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) and our other crown partners and regulatory bodies across all of the jurisdictions in which we operate,” stated the casino operator, via a news release Monday.

“Contrary to suggestions in certain media reports, to our knowledge our company is not under investigation in any jurisdiction.

Our employees followed all procedures required of them by BCLC and we do not believe our company’s actions would give cause to initiate any investigation,” it added.

Those media reports stem from the Vancouver Sun revealing an RCMP investigation into money laundering concerns at River Rock. The reports show police on the trail of an underground banking network that funnels local drug money to “whale gamblers” from Macau, China, who are intent on evading capital controls out of that country. The Sun revealed most high rollers are linked to real estate investment in B.C. The Sun’s investigation followed the

release of an independent review on gaming in B.C. that revealed serious concerns inside the River Rock, including floor employees allegedly not following, or understanding, anti-money laundering best practices.

In one month (July 2015), the casino accepted $13.5 million in $20 bills alone, noted the review.

Pertaining to the irregular cash transactions, BCLC said it will await instruction from Gaming Policy Enforcement Branch (GPEB), the provincial regulator, and the Ministry of Finance as to how it may reform in the wake of such revelations.

Great Canadian said it is and always has been on board with following regulations.

“We regularly go beyond our regulatory obligations and proactively undertake investigative work ourselves, providing that information to BCLC. At River Rock Casino Resort, our security and compliance teams work closely with highly-trained BCLC investigators who work onsite full time, to help them conduct their investigations,” noted Great Canadian.

The Sun reported discrepancies in how the whale gamblers are cashing out their money. Some receive cheques, others are said to be able to exchange their $20 bills for $100 ones.

But, claims Great Canadian: “Players at River Rock, and any casino in B.C., can only receive a cheque for ‘verified winnings’ – that is, amounts they have legitimately won through play. The cheque amount does not include the initial cash buy-in which is only returned to the player in cash.”

ne shot could save your life when it comes to the flu, says Richmond’s chief medical health officer.

“For healthy people, having the flu means a few days of feeling miserable, but for young children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, it can lead to a severe illness involving a hospital stay, or even death,” said Meena Dawar, Vancouver Coastal Health’s (VCH) medical health officer.

“The flu shot is the best way to not only protect yourself, but also the higher-risk people around you.”

For Ann Mackie, a retired family therapist, the reason she gets her flu shot every year is…all of the above.

From her weekly bridge game friends, to her four young grandkids, she wants to protect everyone.

“I get the flu shot every year because, as a 76-year-old, I believe it might save my life,” said Mackie.

“And it’s really important to me that I don’t bring the flu to those close to me. I understand that this could be a particularly nasty flu bug this year.”

Every year across Canada, approximately 3,500 people die from complications due to the flu and pneumonia, and the majority are seniors. Currently, flu activity is at expected levels across B.C. for this time of year, and is

mostly the A(H3N2) flu strain.

While there was a severe flu season last year, experts say it’s too early to predict how severe this winter’s flu season will be.

Flu shots are recommended for everyone and are free in B.C. for pregnant women, all children aged from six months to five years, people 65 years and older, Aboriginal people, and those with chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems.

The vaccine is also free for anyone who lives or works with a person who is at higher risk of problems from the flu.

Children aged two to 17 years of age will have two options: The standard vaccine by needle (flu shot) or FluMist, the nasal spray vaccine. Both vaccines are effective and parents and caregivers can choose which vaccine to offer their child.

To protect patients in health care facilities, all B.C. health authorities require that doctors, staff, students and volunteers get immunized or wear a mask during the flu season.

People planning to visit loved ones in a health care facility or who will take family members to appointments are also eligible for a free flu shot.

To further protect patients, unvaccinated visitors to VCH facilities are asked to wear a mask, beginning Dec. 1. Masks will be available at nursing stations and/or outpatient reception desks.

f he answers his door on Halloween night, he’ll smile and give you some candy — but he won’t be dressed up.

Which is ironic, considering what Ray Page has hidden away behind the closed doors of his townhouse on General Currie Road in central Richmond.

Every year for Halloween for the last 18 years Page has indulged his passion for costume-making and has made at least one elaborate outfit for himself, his wife and his two sons, who’re now 24 and 17.

But most of the ones he’s made for himself are more macabre than Mickey Mouse, and he doesn’t want to mentally scar any trick-or-treaters that ring his bell.

“I remember one time I scared my wife, Blessie,” laughed Page, 56, who has lost count of the number of costumes he’s made over the years.

“She was new to the country, and to Halloween, and I wore one of my masks.

She nearly passed out.”

Page said he will, however, dress up for his job at Canada Post’s sorting office at YVR, although he’s not sure what to wear this year.

“I maybe will wear the Knight King, not many people will have that,” added Page, referring to one of the characters from the hit TV series Game of Thrones that is fuelling his costume-making desires right now.

n Dress-making mom inspires

Page’s passion dates back to his native Philippines, where his professional dressmaking mom used to make clothes for him, his nine brothers and one sister, the

latter of whom lives nearby in Richmond, the rest mainly still in his home country.

Given how many kids she had to dress, it’s not surprising that, at some point, Page — who was the youngest of the flock — picked up his own sewing skills and went to work on his own garb.

“I’ve always sewed. It comes from my mom,” smiled Page, who immigrated to Canada with his parents when he was 22.

“She was making wedding gowns when she was 13, I guess I got some of her skills. In all those pieces of fabric she had left over, I used to make my own pants, as a teenager. It was the ’70s, so I made flares.

“So I guess I’ve been doing this on and off for 43 years; it depends when some things inspire me, like The Game of Thrones.”

n Horrific fascination

Page’s first creation was the rather disturbing character Pinhead, from the movie Hellraiser. Since then, he’s been fascinated by the more horrific characters and costumes.

But it didn’t stop him — during the years of his kids growing up — from expertly fashioning Spider Man, The Hulk, Power Rangers, Buzz Lightyear et al to make sure his little ones were the envy of the neighbourhood.

“For me, it’s a form of art. I didn’t have Halloween in the Philippines when I was growing up. I came here and found out all about it,” he said.

“I wanted my family to participate and I wanted my kids to have a good costume.

Every year, I would make them a costume and I would make one for myself also.

Not surprisingly, Page gets asked all the time to make costumes for people and people are always asking to borrow his amazing creations.

“I’ve never given them out,” he said. “I don’t like to give them out, they wouldn’t fit

Given that his boys are now grown up, Page has long since donated the kids’ costumes to a local animal charity store.

But that has not stopped him sewing away and also making the most out of very modest materials, sometimes from unusual

sources.

“I use lots of recycled materials. I got leather from a sofa at a recycling place, I used my old curtains and I also made the throne (from Game of Thrones) out of cardboard from the sorting office,” said Page.

“The throne took about a month, off and on. I worked on it in the garage every day. The leather costume took about three

whole days, in total.”

As for the scraps of spare time he has left — around this time of the year especially — Page does indulge in one or two other creative habits.

“I do love some photography, and like tattoos. It’s all art,” he said.

“My wife likes it. She supports me; she’s OK with all of this…I think.”

national, online survey has found that most Canadians believe that specific types of Halloween costumes are deemed “inappropriate” for both kids and adults.

Across the country, more than three in five Canadians (63 per cent) — according to the Insights West survey — believe a costume for children that represents an ethnic stereotype is “inappropriate,” and slightly more than half feel the same way about a costume that changes the colour of the child’s skin.

Almost half of Canadians — 1,001 people were surveyed — think costumes where the child carries toy or replica weapons or that

refer to a culture that is not the child’s own are “inappropriate,” while more than a third believe a costume that represents a social stereotype is also inappropriate.

When asked about the same five types of costumes being used by adults, Canadians reacted in the same way to representing ethnic stereotypes (63 per cent find it inappropriate); changing the colour of the adult’s skin (51 per cent); referring to a culture that is not the adult’s own (48 per cent); and carrying toy or replica weapons (47 per cent). About a third find fault with adults wearing a costume that represents social stereotypes.

hen Caroline Chiu moved with her family from Hong Kong to Richmond 14 years ago, she noticed that many popular Chinese vegetables she used to have in Hong Kong were not easy to find here.

So when the 28-year-old Richmondite built her half-acre farm — Riverside Farm at 13840 Gilbert Rd, she had one goal in mind: to introduce organic Chinese greens to the Canadian public.

“I feel very privileged to be exposed to two different cultures,” said Chiu.

“I think it’s beautiful to bridge that gap, to introduce more ethnic Chinese greens to farmers’ markets which are still dominated by Western food.”

Chiu was employed as an agricultural researcher for Kwantlen Polytechnic University

n Chiu sold her vegetables through a CSA program, in which members pay before the season to receive assorted vegetables for four months.

(KPU) in 2013 after receiving her master’s degree in food and resource economics from UBC. During that time, she became interested in KPU’s farming program and got enrolled as a student in 2015.

“At first, I only joined the farming program to better understand agriculture and advance my career,” said Chiu.

“Then I couldn’t stop. I have learned farming, now I want to do farming...I found myself really enjoying it.”

She and a friend leased 22,000 sq. ft. of farmland from KPU, which leases land to farm graduates at an affordable rate.

Chiu grows more than 20 types of organic vegetables, including various Chinese greens such as bok choy, gai lan, yu choy, choi sum and pettus — vegetables an Asian family would have on a daily basis.

“I’m not gonna lie, working in the field is very tiring and stressful, mentally and physically,” said Chiu.

She said things change so fast in farming, and a couple of hours of strong wind can break the greenhouse and damage the plants.

“But it’s very fulfilling at the same time, especially when my vegetables change someone’s eating habits, when they share their food with other people, or when they come back to me to buy again,” Chiu said.

She enjoys introducing Chinese greens to people who have never tried them before, and introducing Chinese customers to other vegetables they have never seen.

She noted that although Asian vegetables are sold in many supermarkets in Richmond, organic Asian greens are still rare.

“I had some Chinese customers coming to me, although they didn’t buy a lot, they wanted to know more about organic food,” said Chiu.

“I would explain the benefits of organic veggies and why they are more expensive than

the ones in the supermarket. It’s such a valuable experience to educate them about this.”

Chiu managed to sell all her vegetables this year through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), a program in which members pay up front at the beginning of the season to receive a $20 box of assorted vegetables every week, for about four months.

“We like that model because our income is guaranteed. It’s a good way to support us farmers,” said Chiu.

“It’s also a lifestyle choice for customers because they are forced to try different vegetables, and have to get creative with their cooking with the veggies they received,” she added.

Chiu grew up in a family where no one worked in agriculture. Her being a farmer was never something her parents expected.

“I live in a typical Chinese family. My parents want me to be a professional, like a doctor, but I don’t want to do that,” Chiu said.

“They think, ‘you have a master’s degree, why are you farming? It’s a lot of hard work and you don’t make much money.’ That’s really odd to them,” she laughed.

But the organic veggies she grows are changing her family’s attitude towards her job.

“They realised how much tastier the food is when I brought home the veggies from my farm, and they have started to appreciate local organic vegetables.”

Now Chiu is working as the manager for the KPU farming program as well as running her own farm. She hopes her experience will encourage more young people in Richmond to get involved in local agriculture.

“The local organic food movement is still pretty slow in Richmond. Farmers’ markets are going to take time to build,” said Chiu.

“I think each region, city or country should have the ability to grow their own food. It makes us more resilient to international change as food is a basic necessity.”

A special car displayed in Aberdeen Centre has caught many people’s eyes.

The secret to the car’s design is in its name – The SOLO. It has two front wheels but one back wheel, with room for one person only.

The display is owned by ElectraMeccanica Vehicles Corp, an ambitious Vancouver-based electronic car company that wants to start a revolution in the car industry.

“The vehicle is non-polluting, very economical to operate and people will have a heck of a good time driving it too,” said the company’s COO Henry Reisner.

“We believe The SOLO will become the commuter vehicle of choice for the masses.”

The SOLO’s design took into consideration that approximately 80 per cent of people commute to and from work alone in their personal vehicle.

It is only 3.04 metres long and 1.21 metres tall, with a small trunk at the back.

Charging the battery from zero to full takes three hours at a 220-volt charging station.

The car can go at a top speed of 130 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h within eight seconds.

“The vehicle is not intended to replace the family car, but to supplement the driving experience getting commuters where they need to go at minimal expense and harm to the environment,” said spokesperson Jeff Holland.

Currently being handmade only in its plant in New Westminster, the car is sold for $19,888.

The company said it has received 120,000 reservations worldwide and will start manufacturing the cars next year.

eated at the front of Rosewood Manor’s enthusiastic choir were Mae Corbett and Eleanor Tucker, who were buzzing on sparkling apple cider to celebrate their home’s 35th anniversary.

“It’s such a wonderful place, I love it,” said Tucker, with a grin as she held Corbett’s hand with delight while clinking their glasses together.

The choir had gathered Wednesday afternoon for a special party that was to highlight the intermediate/complex residential care facility’s foundation fundraising, as well as Rosewood’s important contributions to the community.

“Over the years, the Rosewood Manor has been the standard for this kind of facility,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie at the event.

Rosewood is managed by the Richmond Intermediate Care Society, under the regulatory auspices of Vancouver Costal Health.

Administrator Deborah Goegan spoke to an audience of dignitaries, volunteers, workers, residents and family members about the continual need to raise money for facility upgrades.

When Rosewood opened in 1982 it was more a retirement home than a care home, explained Goegan. Over time, it has evolved into taking care of seniors who are nearer to the ends of their lives. Now, the average age of a resident is 87.

“We celebrate many 100th birthdays,” said Goegan.

Part of the shift is aging at home policies being undertaken by the health authority and urban planners.

“Some residents lived here for 16-17 years. We know now they could have been living at home, with support,” said Goegan Natalie McCarthy, director of Residential Care and Mental Health and Addiction Services, said Rosewood’s wellness outreach program has made a difference in the lives of countless Richmond residents and their families. She also noted the changes in types of care.

“Since those early days, Richmond’s population has doubled and the community reflects a vibrant, culturally diverse demographic unlike anywhere else in Canada,” said McCarthy. “Additionally we have the fastest growing population of individuals over the age of 75, in the province. These changes result in an increasing need for healthcare services.”

Just over 10 years ago, Goegan said Rosewood added a special care unit, which continues to evolve.

“Through this dramatic shift we have had to change our facility to care for these residents,” said Goegan.

This means donations are always sought.

to mid-nineties, may stay six months to three years,” explained Goegan. “It’s made us look at our building and to redesign everything, to meet those care needs by trying to open up doorways, making it a homelike environment, building our special care unit to care for them in a quiet atmosphere where they are not having anxiety or agitation.”

A recent round of fundraising has been dubbed ‘Let the Sun Shine,’ as it aims to fund window replacements and upgrades.

Over the years, Rosewood has added solariums, created interactive gardening,

rebuilt its dining room and done a number of technical upgrades such as sprinkler systems and plumbing.

Goegan noted as residents have aged, there’s been a greater need to rebuild the rooms to better tend to patients suffering from dementia. For instance, smaller individualized rooms are best for sundowning patients, who suffer from bouts of anxiety and disorientation in the late afternoon.

Goegan thanked the society’s many volunteers and contributors, among them Dr. Gary Koss, who has been the residence’s medical advisor since its opening.

A belated tribute to a complicated mom oon it will be my mother’s first Yahrtzeit, the anniversary of her passing, and I’m honouring her by writing a tribute in her memory.

At her core, my mother, Estelle, was a beautiful, educated woman. In her twenties, she worked as a medical social worker in Montreal. She got married just shy of 27, and from that moment on, was a full-time mom. She made hot lunches for my sister and me every day; entertained for her and dad’s friends, and kept a lovely home. It hits me now that we never considered that work. Shame on us.

My mom was a complicated woman. Without comparing her to my father, let me just say that my relationship with her was complex. Until she started suffering from dementia.

As I write the word “suffering” I wonder how aware she

during the last ten years.

Our relationship became closer as mom’s dementia got worse. Being her primary caregiver (outside of her care facility attendants) wasn’t easy, but it was my sole way of connecting with her. I had lost too many years to selfishness. In hindsight, I think I might have unwittingly had a compassion bypass during my 20s, 30s and 40s.

Capacity for love didn’t come easily to either of us. And now the guilt niggles at me. But in the end, a mother is always a mother. And my sadness is a cloak around my heart.

Visiting mom’s grave recently, I had a long talk with her. I asked forgiveness for all the mean things I said and did in the past. I told her that I hope she’s in heaven now, happy, healthy and maybe even in love with dad again. At the very moment I said “in love with dad,” a truck passed by and blasted its horn. I’m not sure whether that was my mom or my dad saying, “Don’t push your luck, kiddo!”

But I know for certain it was one of them.

A

new adult day centre was opened in Steveston Tuesday, offering services to seniors experiencing physical or cognitive challenges.

“It’s like a child day care centre, but for seniors,” said Eileen Lao, public affairs manager for S.U.C.C.E.S.S. The S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Jackson Lam Adult Day Centre, colocated at the Austin Harris Residence at 5411 Moncton Street, was made possible after a $300,000 donation was received from Ping Mah as well as the Lam family.

The centre provides space for up to 25 seniors to connect and socialize from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

“Seniors tend to be less mobile. Some are isolated because they are unable to go outside to meet with people,” said Lao. “They can be dropped off at the centre by their families or carers in the morning, meet with others of a similar age, take part in activities, be taken care of by staff, and then get picked up in the afternoon.”

Activities include exercises, baking classes, arts and crafts, games and singalongs.

The centre also organizes field trips, monitors attendees’ health and provides lunch with both Western and Chinese food on the menu.

To be eligible, people first need to get an assessment and referral from health authorities. Some may be only allowed to enter the centre a few days a week due to high demand, according to Lao. “These types of centres are still a new thing, but have been very popular. We already have a long line up for this new centre,” she said.

Health(VCH), costs members $9 a day and includes lunch and snacks.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is seeking more donations to make sure the centre will run in the long term.

“My family and I are really thrilled with the official opening of the centre, as a lot of seniors and their families can benefit from the services and support of this program,” said Mah, daughter of Jackson Lam.

This is the second adult day centre to open in Richmond. The other is the Richmond Kinsmen ADC, located at 100 - 6100 Bowling Green Road, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and has 94 members.

VCH plans to create a total of 25 new adult day program spaces in Richmond in partnership with S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Austin Harris Residence is located at the site of the old Austin Harris elementary school, near Westwind.

Everybody’s talkin’ ’bout the new sound; funny but it’s still rock ’n’ roll (or is it ‘Estate planning’?) to me!

Bill Joel is in the news again. The 68-year-old singer/musician, who is the thirdhighest selling artist in the U.S. (he has sold more records than Madonna and Michael Jackson) is now, with his wife, expecting another child. The result, of course, is a story or two about Estate planning for the elderly.

I have my doubts that Billy Joel, who still performs regularly, needs much more than a well prepared Will. Perhaps he has already done Estate planning.

However, given that life expectancy in the U.S. is around 82 for men and 84 for women, and is lower for musical artists (Tom Petty recently died at 66 and David Bowie, who died earlier this year, was only 69), it would not hurt for him to at least consider some planning for his children.

The winery is best known for its two signature blends: Alibi, a Bordeaux blended white and Nota Bene, a Bordeaux-style red.

My favourite Black Hills white is the barrel-fermented 2015 Chardonnay ($35.87).

I loved its toasted nut and vanilla bouquet and the complex flavour of oak and apple fruit with hints of freshly baked bread and butter on the finish.

“At that point we are only down seven, our offence was making plays and we were moving the football,” said Bill. “That was the turning point right there and took the wind out of our sails. “(Barsby) certainly had more noticeable athletic talent than they

have had in the past so they can throw the ball. We weren’t unhappy about that at all because we like our pass defence a lot. But they hadn’t really run the ball well this year so that was a bit of a surprise. They have a couple of big backs and big linemen too so there weren’t many gaps for us to shoot through.”

The loss dropped Boyd’s record to 1-2 in conference play and sets up a battle for third place in the Western “AA” Conference tonight

at the Burnaby Lakes West Sports Complex against the Argyle Pipers.

The North Vancouver school (2-1) produced a 21-14 road win over Ballenas (0-3) last week. The Trojans will then close out their regular season a week later against winless Holy Cross.

“They like to throw the football which, again, is a good match-up for us. But they have some athletes that we definitely will have to pay attention too,” added Bill.

It’s been one special month in Tyler Horstmann’s up-and-coming hockey career. After learning he had earned a roster spot on B.C. Hockey’s U16 team, the 15-year-old forward signed with the Western Hockey League’s Edmonton Oil Kings. Tyler and his B.C. teammates were then off to Calgary for the WHL Cup top prospects tournament.

After a slow start, B.C. produced a pair of wins to reach the final, they edged Alberta in overtime to win the event for the first time in five years. Tyler was among B.C.’s top scorers with five points in as many games. He will now resume his season in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League with the Greater Vancouver Canadians. t was back to business as usual this week after one of the most memorable days in the history of the Hugh Boyd Trojans football program.

Alumni, colleagues, friends and family were on hand for Bill and Bruce Haddow’s final home game as they wind down their remarkable coaching careers that extend over four decades. The brothers were honoured last Friday and the alumni hosted an after party at The Buck and Ear Bar and Grill in Steveston.

Among the well-wishes was CFL Hall of Famer and fellow Richmond High alumni Jim Mills, along with B.C. Football Hall of Fame inductee Matt Phillips who had a huge role in the development of high school football in Richmond. He helped launch programs at Steveston, Cambie and London.

Phillips coached the Haddows when they played for the junior team at Cambie. Now 84 and battling cancer, he has remained in touch with them over the years and took in the entire game from the west end zone. He has also been a regular visitor at Bill’s other passion— his White Rock Beach Beer Company’s tasting room.

“He coached me at Cambie in Grades 9-10 back in the early 1970s and he was already a legend back then,” laughed Bill. “He is still super sharp and loves talking Xs and Os. He was a major influence on how we ended up here.”

So was their coach at Richmond High — the late Archie Skemp who was part of the 2017 induction class for the B.C. Football Hall of Fame and ran the powerhouse Richmond Raiders junior program in the 1980s.

On the field, the Barsby Bulldogs prevented a perfect day for Boyd Football with a 34-13 victory.

The Trojans scored on their opening possession as running back Reace Mok capped off an impressive march, but the Nanaimo school took over thanks to a balanced attack and a physical defence.

Richmond-Seafair Hockey merger vote now underway Mark Booth

A

historic vote is now underway to potentially merge the city’s two largest minor hockey associations.

Richmond Minor and Seafair Minor cohosted one final extraordinary meeting on Wednesday night to begin the process of winding down each society and starting a new association. Members have already had two nights to cast their ballots and voting continues on Saturday and Sunday afternoon at the Richmond Ice Centre.

Expiring professional contracts provided a window of opportunity to bring forward the merger possibility once again as both associations deal with minor hockey’s ever-changing competitive landscape that now includes school academies and future regional rep leagues run by B.C. Hockey.

It would also eliminate the long rivalry which, at times, has spilled over into schools and even resulted in incidents of bullying.

Informal talks began in the spring of 2016 and a merger committee was formed last fall, paving the way for this week’s vote.

A new board of directors (five from each association) was also created to begin the work required to launch the new association in time for the 2018-19 season. In total, 17 volunteers from both groups have poured in long hours to reach this point.

In his 21st season serving on the Seafair executive, president Nigel Shackles wasn’t sure if he would ever see the day where the merger process would get this far.

“I don’t think people understand (how big this night is),” smiled Shackles. “It’s wonderful because it takes a lot of work to get to this point but ultimately it’s the decision of the members and that’s all I ever wanted.

“It’s their hockey (in their city) and if they want one association, we are giving them that opportunity. If they don’t want it then we are giving them that as well. All the information is front of them about the challenges but if we don’t merge it just means we meet those challenges in a different way. It’s up to them.”

Over 100 members from both associations were on hand Wednesday at StevestonLondon Secondary School. If there has been any animosity at past meetings, none was evident on this night. Instead, there seemed to be momentum behind the proposal.

Shackles talked about the history and pride of both organizations and how the new association would not favour either in

any way when it comes to a logo, nickname and colour schemes. Rather they would reflect a new era for minor hockey in Richmond. However, he hinted a hyphenated name might be the leading candidate — the very same route the school went where the meeting was taking place.

Richmond Minor president Carolyn Hart pointed out how the merged association would be 18 percent larger than any other in Pacific Coast Amateur with over 1,200 players. Only Kamloops would be bigger in B.C. However, she also warned there would be added costs with more paid staff required to run such a large association.

Richmond Minor and Seafair also receive a combined $200,000 annually in Community Gaming Grants. That number could be reduced as much as half as just one applicant, meaning a loss of about $80 per player and ultimately higher registration fees.

“I think full disclosure is very important,” said Hart. “I don’t want to be walking down the hallway at the Richmond Ice Centre one day and someone says ‘you didn’t tell me about that.’ That’s why for me, it’s what you see (or hear) is what you are going to get. I don’t want it to be any different.”

The added costs could be compensated by bringing more sponsors on board. That was brought up by a parent who pointed out how some local businesses have been hesitant to support one association and not the other in fear of upsetting their customers.

Richmond Minor and Seafair are in good shape financially and are committed to contribute at least $30,000 each to the new association.

Now, it’s just a matter of getting members to vote and both presidents want to see a healthy turnout. Voting at the RIC makes it convenient as possible for parents already watching their kids play.

“It’s impossible to pick a night to do this so we wanted to meet (members) where they already are,” said Hart.

“I really want more than 50 percent (of our members) voting. I want this vote to be a true reflection of where their association is going,” added Shackles. “People that wanted it to happen five years ago are definitely voting. The people that don’t want it to happen at all are definitely voting too. Those camps cancel each other out. It’s reaching the middle ground which is the bigger group of people.

“I think most people sense it’s a good idea. Now it’s whether they come out to vote.”

BROOKS, John (Jack), Ellis July 29, 1928 - October 6, 2017 Jack Brooks passed away peacefully at the age of 89 at Windermere Care Centre in Vancouver. Jack survived his wife Kem (Kathleen), who passed away eighteen months previously at the age of 90.

At the age of 17, Jack attended St. Margaret’s Sea Training in Hubbard’s Nova Scotia. He quickly excelled and reached the rank of Top Captain. Jack hoped of becoming a Merchant Marine Officer and serving in the war effort however, being 1945 and the war ending, Jack never saw service.

Returning home he worked several jobs in order to put himself through UBC. Jack worked on the tugs in local waters around New Westminster then later he became a surveyor for CNN Railway in Northern BC. Jack earned his P. Eng. accreditation in 1956 and became a proud member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC. Jack started his engineering career working briefly for the City of Vancouver Engineering Department before pursuing an opportunity with the growing Municipality (City) of Richmond.

Jack received numerous promotions after joining the Municipality’s Engineering Department in 1956 where he became the Municipal Engineer then ultimately he became the Municipal Administrator in the 1970s, until his retirement in 1988. In his retirement he volunteered for 12 years with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Richmond branch. This work brought him great satisfaction and fulfillment as his youngest son Michael (1962-2012), struggled with schizophrenia.

Jack is survived by his two remaining sons Richard (Lana), Tony (Sylvia) and grandson Tim, all who have the fondest memories of a man that provided his heart and caring soul to his community and family. The family would like to thank the staff at Windermere for caring for Jack over the past few years.
