suspect our front page feature on birth tourism will have many up in arms.

The idea that a pregnant woman can fly into YVR and give birth at Richmond Hospital for the sole purpose of getting her newborn a Canadian passport has many incensed.

It feels like an affront to our immigration system.

It’s also patently unfair that just because your parents are wealthy enough to spend $30,000 to jump the immigration queue, you can then move to Canada at age 18, should you so decide.

But what I suspect shocks many is the fact this is apparently legal, at least not illegal.

While it is definitely a back-door entry — a thriving baby house industry, complete with support services, travel arrangements and a bustling maternity ward at Richmond Hospital, was not envisioned when Canada decreed anyone born here would be granted citizenship — it appears there is almost no legislation, not to mention resources, dedicated to stopping it.

In fact, it was when local activist Kerry Starchuk tried to put an end to the practice by starting a petition that it really took off, because what she exposed was the fact there are no regulations.

So now, we have our two federal MPs (the ones responsible for legislation to deal with this) falling over themselves telling us what an outrage this is; “You have guys...looking at our generosity and abusing it,” is how MP Joe Peschisolido put it.

MP Alice Wong goes further, calling for a fundament change to our Citizenship Act to no longer grant automatic citizenship to anyone born here.

I can’t say I agree with either.

Actually, leave it to me and we wouldn’t have borders in the first place.

OK, maybe I listened too much to John Lennon in my formative years, but “imagine if there were no countries,” as he once famously sang.

“Nothing to kill or die for,” — not to mention no headache at the Peace Arch crossing.

Moreover, no one has control over where they’re born, so to be granted rights on the basis of that seems a bit arbitrary.

But, of course, John and I are not running the world, and clearly others are determined to protect these lines in the sand. So the least we could do is make it as fair as possible. What we have now is the worst of both worlds.

Hundreds of people are coming in because it’s not exactly illegal but is viewed as “unacceptable,” so it operates in the shadows. The fact all the doctors and consultants in question take “cash only” is a flaming red flag — can you say tax avoidance?

As well, the status quo is straining our nurses and maternity wards, nor can any of this be in the best interest of baby and mom.

If we’re not willing to loosen up our immigration system to the point where people don’t feel the need to do this, then we need to impose clear regulations that ensure our health care sytem is fairly compensated, everyone’s paying their share of taxes and people are well taken care of.

But, even if we do, it’s still a shame we’re granting citizenship based on money, not merit.

Dear Editor, The federal government has embarked on a “tax fairness” program to tax minimum wage workers for employees discounts that many enjoy while working in food services and the retail industry.

This comes on the heels of going after small business “tax cheats” who, legitimately, use the existing tax laws to minimize the tax amounts that they do pay.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of residents right here in Richmond pay zero or very little tax.

They do so easily by not reporting their offshore income that they are required to report.

The tipping point has been reached where a smaller and smaller percentage

of the population are paying for services that a larger and larger percentage are not paying.

Richmond has very high poverty rates according to CRA data.

This, of course, is bogus.

The reason for this situation, which predates our current government, is that it is “hard” to collect such taxes.

The CRA does not do “hard.”

Ottawa is desperate for more tax revenue. We do not need more taxes on existing tax-paying citizens.

I suggest there are, annually, tens of millions of dollars of taxes to collect if only the CRA did “hard.”

I am all for tax fairness.

When to take your CPP – the hard numbers?

The outstanding columnist, Rob Carrick, in the Globe & Mail a couple weeks ago examined what you receive from the CPP depending when you start it.

If you go with the majority, and start at 65, your maximum CPP benefit is $1,114 (this year) and if you live to age 80, you will have received $200,520. Had you started at age 60 (with a maximum benefit of $713 this year) and lived to 80, you will have received only $171,120.

Starting the CPP at age 70 brings you a maximum benefit of $1,582 and at age 80 you will have received $189,840. The magic age seems to be 82 because at that age, whether you had started at age 65 or 70, your total payout received is the same.

In my opinion, if you do need the money, take the CPP at whatever age you want, after age 60. If you are still working, and your health allows you to continue, I recommend waiting to at least 65 because the difference ($400) in monthly benefits is significant.

Remember also two things. First, CPP benefits are taxable and second, with each passing month after age 60, the CPP benefit rises, until age 70.

Pressure applied to MP Dear Editor, Re: “Port’s mandate is a crock, says MP,” News, Oct. 6.

The recent thoughts of MP Joe Peschisolido on the ongoing issues surrounding unchecked port expansion require a tad more investigation before being blindly accepted as truth.

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is but one of the interested parties in this recent push to expand along the Fraser estuary.

The shipping community also has the BC Chamber of Shipping, which has become an agency that works with Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Port Authority on port security pass matters. It is, in fact, a shipping industry agency that has, in recent years, become dominated at the board level by mostly Asian shipping conglomerate representatives.

This is the agency that gave us Steven Brown (of Kinder Morgan cheerleader fame) and has also, in the recent past, donated to the campaign of Marc Garneau (current Minister of Transportation) when he was seeking the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada.

The Chamber of Shipping is actively lobbying the federal government on all items related to port expansion and growth.

I’ve also written MP Peschisolido on the ongoing issue of open net pen salmon farming and it’s undeniable contribution to the demise

of Fraser river salmon stocks. The letter I received back was very supportive of the fish farming industry and offered no real thoughts on wild salmon preservation.

One can only suppose the wild fish workers have not donated enough to the Liberals to be heard or listened to?

The federal Liberals have accepted financial support from many aquaculture entities, many shipping entities and once checked against the recent epiphany of Peschisolido does not pass any real smell test.

I suspect our MP was pressured into the thoughts he expresses in your recent article; I also suspect he is just angling for another election win in a mounting sea of discontent among many B.C. residents over many items the Liberals are now finally being held to account for.

In the honour of recently departed wild fish advocate Rafe Mair, please explain how after accepting financial support from many of the entities that threaten wild salmon, how Peschisolido can now suddenly have an 11th hour epiphany on the industrialization of the Fraser foreshore?

I suspect a groundswell of public opinion has much to do with this recent change in tact.

Singh could change game Dear Editor, Jagmeet Singh’s election as leader of the federal NDP is a game-changer in Canadian politics.

Being the first member of a minority community in Canada to lead a major political party is a commendable accomplishment for the young man from Brampton, Ontario.

In a sense, Singh has broken the glass ceiling for many others, especially the youth. He is a smart, calm, enthusiastic and articulate young man. Singh’s cool and calm response to a heckler in his hometown seemed to have been a turning point in his campaign.

His message of “love and

courage” has caught on, especially with the youth.

As Davina Bhandar, an adjunct professor at SFU, has stated, Singh’s election should enable and empower him to navigate the debates about issues of racism and religious intolerance in an effective manner.

When eye issues ended Horace’s car travels, he impressed all with his ability to briskly walk and bus to keep his schedule of activities from Richmond Centre to the Golden Coin and home to Golden Mews. Horace was one of a kind – a special fellow who lived fully for 96 years. I will miss seeing Horace on his forays around Richmond and particularly at each and every Remembrance Day Ceremony where he personified the dignity of service and duty. We are honoured that Horace chose Canada as his home. The care he received from his friends and neighbours in Richmond make me proud of our community.

I wish to pay tribute to a bond of friendship which has endured over the life course; the connection between Horace Excell and Don Taylor. Horace was born in 1921 and passed away on Sept. 18, 2017. Born in Maidstone, Kent, England he proudly and bravely served in the British Royal Navy from 1939 to 1945. Always independent and ambitious, Horace immigrated to Canada in 1960. In the 1990’s he supported children’s lacrosse, soccer and hockey teams while being adored by players and parents alike. Horace always worked hard and retired at the age of 65 as custodian of Richmond’s Woodward Elementary School. It was there that Don Taylor was a school administrator and I was a teacher.

Don is a wonderful human being and he continued to watch over Horace, each year celebrating with a birthday dinner and numerous sporting events.

he body found in Garden City Park in the early hours of Tuesday has been named as 30-year-old Ibrahim Amjad Ibrahim, of Surrey.

Police say Ibrahim, who was a known associate of gangs, died from gunshot wounds.

The Internet of Things, often referred to as “IoT” is simply defined as the interconnection through the Internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data.

A panel discussion reflecting on the impact of the IoT included Jason Krause, a senior vice president at Sierra Wireless, Christopher Chong, president and CEO at SST Wireless and Clint Undseth, vice president of Innovation at Stuart Olson.

Panel moderator Pam Ferguson, who has led IoT divisions for major telecommunications companies, opened

the discussion and noted that IoT is a “disruptive” technology that is impacting virtually all industries.

Krause - whose Sierra Wireless is a world-leading IoT integrator, headquartered in Richmond - touched on IoT’s impact on changing business models and how it is transforming customer experiences in sectors ranging from automotive, retail, security and major industry.

While Chong highlighted the biggest impact of adopting IoT technology is collecting, measuring and analyzing data to drive better and faster business decisions.

Also speaking at the event was Scotiabank senior vice president and chief economist Jean Francois Perrault, who provided an overview of current national and international economic trends, on the heels of the bank’s release of its quarterly economic outlook.

Here are five wines from McWatters’ winery to enjoy this autumn. Your “Time” starts now: Time 2016 Viognier, $22.99: It’s a delicious example of this exotic fragrant grape. Expect a mandarin orange and tropical fruit bouquet, with flavours of nectarine, pineapple, orange and vanilla. The Viognier has a full body thanks to its high alcohol level. Enjoy with chicken paprika and peaches or duck breasts with honey and ginger.

Time 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, $22.99: Unlike many SB’s, this is barrel fermented. Along with a gentle nutty character, the oak adds a creamy mouth feel. But the wood is well balanced with the lemon, pineapple, and mango elements and the bright lime finish. Pair with mushroom and goat cheese bruschetta or a Caesar salad.

Time 2016 Riesling, $22.99: Like most Rieslings, this example is almost colourless in the glass. Despite its lack of colour, it has a gorgeous fresh tree fruit and citrus aroma.

And there’s plenty of golden delicious apple and lemon zest flavour with the acidity and minerality that Alsatian Rieslings are famous for. I loved the dry finish that persists. Serve with Choucroute, the smoked pork chop, sausages, sauerkraut and apple casserole of Alsace.

Time 2014 Chardonnay, $25: Grown on the Black Sage Bench in the South Okanagan, this is Time’s biggest white in terms of body, bouquet, and flavour. Chards enjoy a deep yellow colour and that hints at the depth of character it displays.

On the nose there’s a wonderful balance of oak and fruit. On the palate there is a rich honeyed apple, butterscotch, toasted nut taste, reminiscent of a white burgundy.

Serve this sophisticated and vibrant Chardonnay with a crab, jicama, and mango salad with lemon-curry dressing.

Time 2016 Syrah Rosé, $22.99: If you think rosés are wimpy wines, taste this flavourful one and you’ll change your mind! Marvel at the gorgeous salmon colour, feel the great mouth feel, and enjoy the tropical fruit and strawberry and raspberry personality and its extended finish.

Pair with eggplant tomato and spinach pizza, bacon potato salad with soft-boiled eggs, or salmon with dill pesto.

ichmond is Canada’s epicentre for a booming, unregulated birth tourism industry emerging from China.

Wealthy Chinese nationals are showing up at local doctor offices, cash in hand, with the intent of giving birth to obtain Canadian citizenship for their newborn babies.

“They are here for that Canadian passport,” said Xi An, the founder of the Vancouver Post-natal Care Association and the owner of the Richmond-based Icy Consulting firm, which helps provide services for women giving birth, including maternity care, arranging appointments and filing various paperwork.

hospital helped birth, on average, 18 new Canadians per year from non-resident mothers. Nationality isn’t routinely tracked but a tabulation by hospital officials in 2016 showed Chinese nationals accounting for 98 per cent of such births.

Ironically, An attributes this year’s growth to media coverage of a federal petition against birth tourism launched in Richmond last year by community activist Kerry Starchuk.

“Before (birth tourism) was underground, people didn’t know the government’s attitude and only a small group of them were willing to take the risk.

“But after the media’s exposure of the issue, people realized . . . the government seems to be OK with it,” said An. She noted there is a large demand for live-in, post-natal caregivers, who do not fall under any regulatory framework in Canada.

Caregivers are paid from between $7,000 to $12,000 per month to take care of the mother and baby during the 1-2 months after birth. Online advertisements in Chinese show these caregivers provide services such as cooking, but also offer care that falls under what a registered doula or nurse would do, such as lactation assistance.

Some women use baby houses while others go on a “DIY trip,” by renting an apartment locally while giving birth here, said An. “They usually have friends or family here, who helped them book a two-bedroom apartment in advance.”

Agencies such as An’s also help mothersto-be book doctor appointments, hospital rooms and car services, as well as apply for birth certificates and passports for the baby.

Private homes, or baby houses, are also popping up in Richmond. The News understands one operates on the entire floor of a new residential tower in Oval Village.

Others are detached homes. Some don’t have business licenses. Those that do, can operate as tour agencies; and because they provide accommodation for more than a month, they don’t fall under short-term rental regulations.

The News tried to contact several baby house operators, but all either refused to comment or told the News that they were not available.

This month an undercover reporter visited a baby house in West Richmond — a detached house with five rooms. Each room had a bathroom and a crib, and costs $20,000, with meals, over three months.

moms come here alone since their husband has to work in China. Most husbands can only visit for about 10 days when the baby is born.

The operator also helps the parents arrange doctor visits, usually with Chinesespeaking doctors who are in partnership with the baby houses. Doctor visits cost about $120 each, and are cash only.

One doctor routinely mentioned online is Dr. Brenda Tan, who did not respond to News inquiries.

Online comments indicate Tan is very busy with cash customers who are treated “like VIP.” Citizenship appears to be the number one reason for these clients.

“The parents do it so that when their baby is 18, he or she will have one more option, to choose to be a Canadian or Chinese,” explained An. She added that the Canadian baby will get a longterm visiting visa to return to China and apply for See Nurses page 15

The Liberal-led Canadian government and official opposition Conservatives both agree birth tourism is not acceptable. However, they disagree on what action should be taken.

“I think it is a problem. The question is, what is the scope of the problem?” said Liberal Steveston-Richmond East MP Joe Peschisolido. “You could be seeing the development of a pipeline bringing folks in, and if that’s the case then it’s a huge issue.

“You’re getting an organized international effort to abuse the system and subvert the integrity of the immigration system.

“You have guys looking at loopholes, looking at our generosity and abusing it,” he added.

Peschisolido said the government is monitoring the situation. He said one solution could be better enforcement at the border and also education, by way of sending other countries a message.

“It’s not a friendly message. It’s actually an educational one. Don’t do it, we’ll stop it and there will be consequences,” he said.

Richmond Centre Conservative MP Alice Wong backed Starchuk’s petition to end jus soli (place of birth) citizenship rights. It was dismissed by the Liberals last year.

Canada and the United States are the only developed countries that offer automatic, nostrings-attached citizenship from birth.

“This is a growing problem that will only get bigger if we don’t do anything about it,” said Starchuk.

Such a change to the Citizenship Act would be applied across the country and end a right Peschisolido finds virtuous.

“If you’re born here, you’re Canadian; that is a good thing. We have to be careful in fixing the problem,” he said.

But Wong said enforcement is difficult and, to date, the Liberals haven’t found a solution to what she calls a “totally unacceptable” industry that is impacting local neighbourhoods.

“The best thing is to go with the root of the problem. This has become a big moneymaking industry that does no good to society.

It’s unfair and it abuses the system,” said Wong.

“We have to go to the [other] route. The best way is to make it just like Hong Kong or Australia . . . You have to prove at least one parent is a permanent resident or a Canadian so the baby gets citizenship,” said Wong.

n Birth visits all but formally legal

Richmond-based immigration consultant Ken Wong sees the loophole as a threat to the immigration system’s integrity.

“Yes, I think it dabbles into violating the integrity of citizenship privileges,” said Wong.

“These kids won’t contribute to Canada.

They’re a passport owner but will spend their life elsewhere,” said Wong.

He noted that once a baby is born at Richmond Hospital, that baby is a Canadian. As such, if there are costly health complications the baby would have the right to be treated under the publicly-funded Medical Services Plan.

He describes birth tourism as a process that is grey in nature, with few clear lines of interpretation.

“There is not a section in immigration law that says birth tourism is illegal,” said Wong.

CBSA spokesperson Robin Barcham confirmed to the News “there is no specific reference in the [Immigration and Refugee Protection Act] legislation regarding women who are pregnant, therefore pregnancy in itself is not a reason for inadmissibility.”

However, Wong said Canadian officials can deny a visa by reasoning that the woman m not be may a to return able to China due to h health considera ations.

Instead, they state they are tourists, but it just so happens that they’re a few months away from giving birth and have booked a baby house or apartment. Such misrepresentation is illegal, according to Barcham.

“Several factors are used in determining admissibility into Canada, including: misrepresentation, health or financial reasons,” said Barcham.

But, in such cases, proving a woman has come to Canada for the exclusive purpose of giving birth to obtain citizenship is difficult, said Wong, adding “there’s no way, in my opinion, that CBSA can enforce it.”

He said CBSA could theoretically raid baby houses and obtain booking records.

“This could be low on the list of priorities. I do think there’s a difference between drug trafficking and this,” said Wong.

He noted the practice of having a baby in Canada is likely for the child only, however it is possible that the child can eventually sponsor the parents’ citizenship process when he or she turns 19. That said, the child would need to establish a Canadian income that could support the parents. Or conversely, said Wong, the family could have lots of money.

n Nurses speak out

The News has spoken to several workers at Richmond Hospital who are dismayed by what is occurring inside the maternity ward from a health care perspective. No one would speak publicly for fear of disciplinary action.

he public is now invited to vote for their favourite street banner designs that could beautify the city in 2018.

The City of Richmond’s 25th annual Street Banner Contest, which closed on Oct. 1, received almost 200 submissions this year.

A community volunteer judging panel selected 20 designs as semi-finalists Wednesday night. The public can view the semi-finalists on the City of Richmond’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/CityofRichmondBC) and vote by “liking” their favourite designs before Oct. 20.

Designs will also be available at City Hall for viewing, and voting can take place by emailing ParksPrograms@Richmond.ca with your top 10 favourite entryies.

Up to 10 finalists will be chosen and more than 1,000 street banners will be produced featuring those winning images.

“They will be installed on street light poles to enhance the city’s spirit and beautify the downtown core and gateways from March 2018 to Feb. 2019,” the city said.

Banner contest winners will be officially announced at a special unveiling ceremony at a City Council meeting in early 2018.

Teen dancers head to the Worlds

wo Richmond girls have made it onto Team Canada for the largest and most prestigious of all dance competitions — The World Dance Championships, being held in Germany next month.

Marlowe Zimmerman, 15, and Naya Sedivy, 16, both Richmond Academy of Dance students, were among 50 of the best young dancers from Western Canada to earn a spot on “Team Canada ShowDance West,” led by esteemed choreographer and former world champion dancer Danielle Gard’s national director, Bonnie Dyer.

Canada has been quite successful in all dance disciplines at the World Championships, mainly due to the high standard of training that local studios offer, said Dyer.

“It is also great to see the best of the best in Canada that come from various studios all working together as one team with one goal… and that is to represent Canada.”

The Canadian team’s repeated success is even more impressive considering Canada doesn’t provide any financial assistance to the dancers, as opposed to most European countries, with Team Canada raising its own funds to train and attend the championships Nov. 20 to 25.

The team ranges in age from seven to 19 and have been training for 11 weeks to represent Canada.

Not only was it the night before Simchat Torah — a holiday that celebrates the end of a year’s worth of reading the Torah Scroll and the start of reading it again — the Chabad of Richmond was in possession of a very significant artefact saved from one of the most traumatic events in modern Jewish history.

At the heart of Thursday’s festivities at Grauer elementary, with Holocaust survivors among the guests, was no ordinary Torah Scroll — it was one that survived Kristallnacht (Crystal Night) or “Night of the Broken Glass,” as it’s known in English.

I

t never gets old for Steve Robinson.

The longtime Seafair Minor Hockey head coach was back in the winner’s circle at the association’s 15th annual Rep Icebreaker Tournament — this time leading the Bantam A1s to a perfect record over the four-day event, including a thrilling 3-2 shootout win over Langley in Monday’s final.

A year ago, Robinson guided the Bantam A2s to Icebreaker gold and came ever-so-close to leading the Midget A1s to their fifth consecutive title. This time, he has reduced his Seafair bench duties for good reason after being named head coach of the Richmond Sockeyes last spring.

Overseeing a junior hockey team is more than enough on any coach’s plate but not for Robinson.

He has been been able to continue his commitment to Seafair after being convinced to take on the association’s top team of 13-and-14-year-olds.

He has a veteran group that includes a number of players he worked with last season in A2. The Islanders rolled through round-robin play with wins over Cloverdale (8-2), Kamloops (3-1) and the Victoria Racquet Club (4-3), before blanking Everett 5-0 in Monday morning’s semi-final.

Langley also went undefeated, setting the stage for an intriguing gold medal game between two teams destined for the top tier of Pacific Coast

Amateur regular season play.

“It lived up to its billing honestly. I thought we played great in the first, lost our way a little bit in the second by turning over the puck a lot and (goalie) Dylan (Tsang) played great,” said Robinson.

“I told the guys in the third to just play one solid period. It wasn’t perfect, but it never is. You just need to make plays.”

With the score tied at 1-1 the Islanders staved off penalty trouble before Langley finally solved Tsang.

However, the hosts would answer not long after on a goal by Ethan Riesterer. Both teams had good chances to end the drama in regulation and the four-on-four five-minute overtime period.

Seafair took control of the shootout from the outset when Tsang turned away the first Langley attempt and Riesterer scored. Tsang then made another save, setting the stage for Jaden Uy’s clinching goal.

“It’s a good start to the year. Working with 13-and-14-year-olds, I always tell my Sockeye guys these kids are young, hungry and focused.

The exact opposite of you,” chuckled Robinson.

“They always get a laugh out of it.

“I run a lot of the same stuff I do there and these kids don’t question me on anything. They just do exactly what I say. It gives me more energy for what I enjoy doing and they are right into it which is fun.”

Robinson is making sure his team is good and battle tested.

The Islanders ave already played exhibition games against the Delta Hockey Academy and St. George’s Bantam prep teams. The latter is coached by former Seafair Hockey Director Yogi Svejkovsky.

Upcoming tournaments include the Victoria Racquet Club and Burnaby Minor’s Pat Quinn Classic over the holidays.

Seafair’s other title came in Pee Wee Tier One where the Islanders capped an unbeaten record with a 9-2 win over Richmond Minor.

It could be one of the final chapters in the longtime rivalry with a highly-anticipated vote to merge the two local associations slated for later this month.

Seafair got past the Vancouver Thunderbirds 4-1 in the semi-finals and produced earlier wins over North Delta (10-0), North Vancouver (7-0) and the Thunderbirds (5-2). Richmond Minor locked up a spot in the final with a 6-5 win against Juan de Fuca, avenging an earlier one goal loss to the Island squad.

Seafair teams settled for silver in the Atom Tier One and Tier Two Divisions. The A1s were doubled 4-2 by Cloverdale in what was their only loss of the weekend. The A2s dropped a 5-1 decision to Sannich.

Other Division winners included: Vancouver Thunderbirds (Midget Tier One), Seattle (Midget Tier Two). Yellowknife (Bantam Tier Two) and Langley (Pee Wee Tier Two).

Trojans finally back at home with key game against Whalers

ugh Boyd Trojans are finally be back in action on their home field for a pair of pivotal Western AA Conference games against Vancouver Island teams, starting this afternoon against the Ballenas Whalers.

The Trojans take on the Parksville school at 5 p.m., then welcome Nanaimo’s John Barsby Bulldogs a week later in their final regular season home game.

Both contests will go a long way to determining Boyd’s positioning for next month’s provincial playoffs.

The Trojans opened conference play last week with a hard-fought 25-14 loss to the No. 1 ranked Windsor Dukes. It was another encouraging result for a team that had played three straight road games and actu-

ally enjoyed a 14-13 second half lead before its North Vancouver opponent rallied.

Grade 10 quarterback Byron Ruvalcaba fired touchdown passes to Zach Jackson and Isaiah Daniels from 45 and eight yards out respectively.

The difference proved to be Dukes quarterback Ryan Baker connecting with Julien Perri for a trio of majors.

The Whalers come to Richmond having caused the Trojans plenty of trouble on their home field in recent years. They handed Boyd a 42-12 quarter-final loss back in the 2014 playoffs then halted their perfect season a year ago with a wild 68-42 victory.

Ballenas is coming off a 21-13 loss to Barsby last week.

Richmond golfers shine down south

ichmond’s Chris Crisologo won his first tournament of the season to lead the Simon Fraser University men’s golf team to third place at the Concordia University Invitational in Oregon this week.

Crisologo fired a final round 67 to climb from 12th at the start the day to grab medalist honours. The three-time NCAA All-American was second at the Western Washington Invitational two weeks ago after placing third in the first event of the year to open his senior season.

Crisologo had 11 birdies in the tournament, shooting rounds of 74, 72 and 67, to finish even par 213. He was three strokes better than Isaac Hall of Concordia.

Meanwhile, University of Colorado freshman Alisha Lau was close to home as she continued an impressive start to her collegiate career.

The Burnett Secondary graduate and one-time Quilchena junior fired rounds of 76-78-74 to help the Buffaloes finish second behind host University of Washington at Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, held at the renowned Sahalee Country Club.

The Buffaloes set new school scoring record in a win at the Coeur D’Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational in Idaho the previous week. Lau recorded rounds of 77-68-72.

Colorado finished with an 18-under total to top 17 other schools.
