I

don’t even know where to begin with this.

It’s heartbreak on top of heartbreak. I don’t want to add to it, but I feel a need to say something, if only to satisfy the callers asking us to write about what happened recently at McMath secondary.

So, here goes...

Last Thursday, a Grade 12 girl at the school died.

She was a bright, well-loved student who was active in her community — a member of Rotary Interact Club, passionate about ending homelessness and intent on starting a club to support the Richmond Animal Protection Society.

Her passing was a profound shock.

Teachers were given a prepared statement to read to their classrooms during the last block of the day.

Some couldn’t get through it without breaking down.

Many students left their classes sobbing. Everyone was encouraged to seek counselling, which the school provided, if they felt the need.

School was barely out for the day before the first bouquet was placed at the McMath sign in front of the school. By Friday, that one bouquet had grown into a powerful memorial with notes, stuffies, candles and a forest of flowers. It was a spontaneous and heartfelt coming together of kids in mourning.

That night, about 50 to 60 students were there, supporting each other in their grief. Even Saturday night, when I went by, there were still kids gathered.

Monday morning, however, it was quite another story. The memorial had been dismantled, flowers and candles were tossed in a dumpster and there was a note from school staff, saying the memorial had been moved inside.

It looked like an incredibly callous show of disrespect. People were enraged, hence the calls for a news story. But there’s another side to this.

I spoke to the principal yesterday. It was yet another heart-wrenching conversation, with us both tearing up more than once. Yes, she had had the memorial moved inside — because it was forecasted to rain. She had told some of the students, thinking the word would get out, so others wouldn’t be surprised, but that didn’t happen. And she was as sickened as anyone to learn some of the flowers had been thrown out. That was never intended.

With a profound sense of regret that her intention to preserve the memorial had, in fact, added to the pain for some, on Tuesday morning she went out and bought as many red roses as she could find and offered them to students to either put back at the sign outside or in front of the indoor memorial.

For some, the damage was done; others didn’t know about the principal’s gesture. On the outside memorial, someone has posted a sign reading, “Our grief will NOT be silenced.”

What a tough time, so much sadness, guilt and regret. Mistakes were made, but we can learn. The outdoor memorial has been restored and will remain there until the Celebration of Life on Oct. 7. And the indoor one provides a place to reflect and write notes that will be placed in a scrapbook for the family.

Indeed, grief should never be silenced, meanwhile there’s no peace without forgiveness. Now’s the time for both so we can move forward and celebrate the short life of a beautiful girl.

Quebec insurance less, at what cost?

Dear Editor, Re: “Quebec car insurance 10 times less than ICBC,” Letters, Sept. 22; “Bring on on-fault,” Letters, Sept. 13 Sure it costs less to insure a vehicle in Quebec and there is a reason for that. It is called “no-fault” insurance.

In B.C., we have some of, if not the, richest tort rules in the country. That means you can sue for all your losses.

Pain and suffering, lost income and any other imaginable harm your lawyer can come up with for which they take on average 33 to 40 per cent of the award.

In Quebec, you don’t have to sue, but the most you can receive if you are grievously injured is $242,000 in 2017.

Here in B.C., two to three times a week, ICBC is paying out $2,000,000 to $3,000,000 awards for grievous bodily injury.

Where does Mr. Lam think that money comes from?

FYI, Mr. Lam, in Quebec if a driver has the misfortune of getting injured in more than one accident, then the SAAQ goes to great lengths to delay or even deny compensations.

Unless one has had the misfortunes of having had an accident, the biases and

callous treatment that accident victims receive remains unknown. Word is, they make ICBC look like nuns.

Mr. Lam wants to “stop the madness.”

What I want to know is when it is his child who is lying in a hospital bed paralyzed from the neck down, is he going to be the first one to step up and say how happy he is that he saved $500 a year on his auto insurance and that the no fault “non-benefit” his child will receive is eminently fair?

There are no easy answers.

We need better education on and enforcement of our rules of the road.

There are things that can be done to bring more cost certainty.

But we also need to think long and hard before we start giving up our rights for the savings that come from no fault insurance.

Everyone of us is only a moment away from being hit by a distracted driver.

My dad always told me nothing in life is free and you get what you pay for. So we can either pay the price up front or pay the piper at the end.

Neither is necessarily palatable but it is our reality.

We all need a home

Dear Editor, Re: “Businesses protest shelter,” News, Sept. 20.

I feel that if we are ever to eliminate the stigma surrounding homelessness, it needs to start here and now. When business owners complain about (unproven) negative impacts of being situated next door to a homeless shelter, they’re part of the problem, not any solution.

Homeless people are just that…people.

They’re not monsters or boogie men/ women. They aren’t criminals and, if/when people do turn to crime, it’s often because

Shame on Wayland Sports’ owner, Ying Wang, for implying that those who need the Salvation Army shelter are automatically a danger to childrren.

Mr. Wang is only a small ripple effecting error away from being in similar circumstances. “The homeless,” as a group, include former business owners and others formerly well-to-do.

Keep in mind, Mr. Wang, the saying, “There, but for the grace of God, go I.” Try gratitude instead of arrogance, sir!

they’ve hit rock bottom. But underneath all the pain and suffering, they’re still people, who, with a bit of intervention, can turn things around. They need help, not to be shunned and viewed as ogres. It perpetuates the cycle they’re in to do so, and that benefits no one in the community.

They have fallen on hard times, many due to illness and other factors that are out of their control. As we experience more and more of a divide between the rich and poor, many of us are just one pay cheque away from possibly becoming homeless.

Children’s safety is more threatened when homeless people DON’T have shelter and resources to rely on. Disconnection from the community is more of a threat than having someone receive hope next door.

If we truly want our children safe, we have to find a way to integrate people back into the community, not sweep them out of sight. Homelessness is a very real and everincreasing issue. We should be applauding the expansion of services for the homeless.

We do children a disservice by deflecting them from the problem rather than actually supporting solutions.

We need to rid ourselves of statements that includes “these kinds of people.” We’re in this together, the wealthy and those in need of shelter alike. Let’s allow everyone dignity and a place to call home, shall we?

It’s the first step in helping them to become productive members of our society, which benefits everyone (including the kids next door).

Good Samaritans abound Dear Editor, Yesterday evening my 25-year-old daughter telephoned just before supper.

She said her tire had blown and she was stuck at the corner of Francis and Gilbert — could I come and help her?

I rushed over, and when I arrived I found a large food service truck parked in front of my daughter’s car and the young driver helping my daughter get the spare tire out.

They were searching for the lug-nut key when my daughter thanked him

and said her father was now here to help her.

By the time I was parked, he had left. I would be the first to admit that I am not very mechanical, but we were able to get the car jacked up and the lug-nuts off, but for some reason the tire would not pull off.

It seemed to be solidly stuck to the axel.

I was ready to call a tow truck, when a man and his wife just walking by stopped to ask us how we were doing. The man gave the tire a couple of kicks and then was able to

pry the tire off by reaching below the car from inside where the tire was lodged.

“Sometimes they just stick,” he said.

We were then able to put on the spare tire and get on our way.

I am so grateful to the help we received from total strangers in our ordeal.

What a wonderful community we live in!

Tipping etiquette debated Dear Editor, I would like to raise an issue regarding tipping for restaurant service — especially for delivery.

There seems to be some confusion among restaurant workers regarding what tipping is for and how it is applied.

I had food delivered recently that included a $4 delivery charge. The receipt had a space for a tip to be added.

There was nothing else to pay more money for. I paid for delivery, the delivery was made; transaction complete.

I actually can’t believe myself for paying the extra amount out of guilt, but that’s my issue.

The issue with the service is that tipping is expected.

Another issue that is present in the industry is owners or managers keeping tips, or pooling tips for the whole staff. I don’t support these policies, especially “stealing” tips from employees. So I prefer to give my money to restaurants that “allow” their staff to keep their own tips and give drivers cash directly.

Tipping is for exemplary service. It is not customary. Whoever started that belief didn’t understand tipping either.

Tips are not guaranteed. They are determined by the customer, based on the service received.

Tips have nothing to do with “my job only pays minimum wage and I have three kids and a mortgage.” That’s your issue to solve.

Get a better job, insist that the industry pay better (which they should), or how about this very easy solution: be amazing when providing service! I don’t have a problem with 1215 per cent if I see smiles and enthusiasm, my glass is kept full of water, the order is correct, my food is hot and cooked properly and, if not, copious apologies and the problem solved with graciousness.

I have worked in the restaurant industry myself, so I know how hard it is. It’s scandalous that servers and drivers aren’t paid a good basic wage, not just minimum or less. How much money a food industry person makes is, unfortunately, determined by tips generated, but there is huge potential there if one performs their job well. I almost always tip, even when it’s not warranted, but what I resent is being pressured, coerced, and expected to tip “because it’s customary” or I just “should.”

Something to think about if you run a restaurant; regardless of how good your food is, you may be losing customers if you are pressuring people for tips. It’s much easier and more ethical to be friendly and attentive, and encourage your staff to be as well.

uestion for Richmond thieves: When do you know the bike you’ve stolen is a bait bike, planted by police?

Answer: About 10 minutes after the theft, when you’re arrested.

Last Thursday, Sept. 21, officers from the Richmond RCMP Property Crime Unit (PCU) deployed a bait bike — similar to bait cars — in the downtown corridor of Richmond at about 6:50 p.m.

A mere 10 minutes later, in the 6300 block of No. 3 Road, those same officers made an arrest.

Darren Belcourt, 33, of no fixed address, has now been charged with theft under $5,000. He is, according to police, a prolific offender and well-known to the RCMP. “Any tool is only as good as its effectiveness and results. In this case, with respect to bike thieves, our bait bike program is off to a fantastic start,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

A

man has been arresting after allegedly stealing luggage from the domestic arrivals carousel at YVR. During the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 26, officers from Richmond RCMP’s YVR detachment arrested a suspect in the International Terminal Building.

The 46-year old man, from Vancouver, is alleged to have stolen luggage

from the domestic arrival carousels throughout the month of September.

He is well-known to police.

“We are strongly committed to the safety and security of all persons and property at YVR,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“In the past several weeks, we responded to calls for service from travellers in the domestic arrivals area reporting lost luggage.

“Through our investigation, it was determined that the luggage was stolen from carousels before their

respective owners could retrieve them — the most recent instance occurring on Sunday, Sept. 24. A possible suspect was identified in these thefts.

“A male fitting the description of the suspect was observed by YVR security staff on Sept. 26 and was quickly arrested.”

Police recommend that all travellers attend the baggage claims carousels immediately upon arrival and to report any suspicious activity to the RCMP.

former top Mountie and expert in international money laundering is set to pore over gambling practices at the River Rock Casino and Resort and other Lower Mainland casinos, according to Attorney General David Eby. Lawyer and former deputy commissioner of the RCMP and Corrections Canada Peter German, who is currently president of the International Centre for Criminal Justice Reform at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, will conduct an independent assessment of British Columbia’s anti-money-laundering policies and practices in the gambling industry.

German’s appointment quickly follows the release of a report by accounting firm MNP LLP that pokes holes in anti-money laundering regulations at B.C. Lottery Corporation (BCLC).

“We’re going to make sure the gaming policies and procedures that protect the interests of British Columbians are in place and are being followed,” said Eby in a news release. “There are concerns about money laundering that have been growing for years — our government is taking action to deal with them quickly

and thoroughly.”

Eby said casinos, including River Rock, as well as BCLC are on board with the review and any subsequent recommendations.

“As part of the review, German will meet with government’s Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch, the BC Lottery Corporation, the Joint Illegal Gaming Investigation Team within British Columbia’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, casino service providers, and employee organizations at any identified facilities, as well as with any other parties who may assist,” stated the government.

Meanwhile, the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC), whose federal government mandate is to facilitate the detection, prevention and deterrence of money laundering and terrorist financing activities, announced it is “currently reviewing the (MNP) report, on which it was not consulted, to determine whether any action on its part is appropriate.”

It’s unclear what the impact of MNP not consulting FINTRAC is on the accounting firm’s report.

“FINTRAC cannot comment on its compliance enforcement actions related to any specific reporting entity,” stated a FINTRAC spokesperson.

A

rare outbreak of a tropical, invasive plant in drainage canals and ponds, managed by a residential strata in Steveston, is threatening Richmond’s environmentally sensitive Sturgeon Bank.

Michael Krygier, strata council president at Mariner’s Village, says Brazilian elodea has overtaken the strata’s landscaped waterway between the townhouses and West Dyke.

And it has officials and concerned residents scrambling to find a solution, which could prove costly.

“It’s become stagnant and, as a result, we’ve had mosquitos, more than we’ve ever had before, and we’ve lost some wildlife (geese, ducks and beavers) that used to exist here.

And the odour has been aggravating some owners,” said Krygier, adding the waterway serves as an aesthetic feature for residents and dyke patrons alike.

“It is a beautiful place to look at,” he said.

Because the canal and ponds drain into the Bank, via a City of Richmond pumping station, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development is assessing the outbreak, which arose in the summer of 2015.

The Bank is home to baby salmon and numerous other species that depend on native plants.

Krygier believes the problem began when someone emptied an aquarium in the pond. Then, during the 2015 drought, city officials investigated the outbreak, as the waterway is largely city property, and realized the strata was pumping fresh water into the pond to maintain its level. The city then installed a water meter and the strata realized it would cost about $110,000 to supply the waterway annually, so Krygier shut off the taps.

Over time, the elodea, a stringy, perennial spread.

According to the Ministry, elodea prefers slow-moving freshwater bodies, with low light, however a spokesperson said officials haven’t determined an exact fix for this specific waterway.

Because the strata turned off the taps, the water levels have dropped about six inches, and there’s been no apparent pumping into the Bank, nor reports of elodea on the other side of the dyke. But heavy winter rains could cause an overflow.

the waterway, to maintain a certain level, and then add circulating fountains.

“Once we hit the level, we can stop the water,” said Roberts.

Krygier said the strata would consider purchasing the fountains for up to $30,000.

“We’re willing to work with the city. It’s a matter of removing (the elodea) first,” said Krygier.

The Ministry said it has already spent $29,000, plus staff time, for a trial run of suction dredging that proved unsuccessful this summer.

That treated portion of the waterway was only a small fraction of the entire waterway. The Ministry said hand removal is cost prohibitive and herbicide options are limited, as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans is overseeing removal proposals because the Bank is tidal waters.

Meanwhile the city is lending its environmental staff to the solution and Krygier said the city has proposed to dispose of the elodea.

But, said city spokesperson Ted Townsend, the Ministry is ultimately the lead on removal.

When asked if the city has any duty to maintain the pond with fresh water, Coun. Carol Day said it does not. She said she personally had to come to terms whether or not to continue supplying her backyard fish pond when her house was metered. She said the city ought to help contain the outbreak by putting up a temporary drainage barrier to the Bank. After the elodea is removed, she said it will be up to the strata to decide if it wants to proceed with a freshwater supply.

Day noted the planned dredging of the much smaller Minoru Park ponds could cost $1 million.

The Ministry said it hasn’t decided what to do yet at Mariner’s Village.

that is in front of a neighbouring apartment complex, whose strata does not supply freshwater. And so, that portion is overrun with tall grasses and bushes.

Roberts and Krygier said in order for the strata to make a decision on the future of the pond they’re hoping for a speedy removal by officials after two years of apparent planning.

“Under the different levels of bureaucracy, we’re stuck until we can get to some resolution to this issue,” said Krygier.

“The Ministy themselves said they didn’t realize how much work it was going to be and they ran out of money. Ever since we’ve been sitting here with this and we can’t run fresh water into it,” said Roberts.

new addition to the City of Richmond’s website is uncovering the stories behind the names of nearly 500 local landmarks.

Residents can now explore and discover the people and history behind the names of local roads, bridges, islands and other places in Richmond through the new Name Origins Online Database Archives at Richmond.ca/Archives/places. For more than 20 years, Friends of the Richmond

Archives volunteers and City of Richmond Archives staff have dedicated countless hours researching the name origins of streets, areas, and landmarks in Richmond.

Most of the name entries in the database are accompanied by a Google map showing the location.

Research into Richmond’s fallen servicemen is included in the database, as well as in the “We Will Remember Them” website launched earlier this year.

A

covered skatepark could be built in Richmond in the future, depending on the needs of the local community.

The possibility of a shelter-covered park came out as part of a “Skateboarding Facilities” report presented last week to city council’s parks and recreation committee.

“An updated skateboard facility…could meet community needs and will be considered as part of future park planning processes,” said Mary Fenwick, manager of the City of Richmond’s parks programs, in her report.

“Prior to advancing any work on this project, a full assessment of the community need for a skatepark and a full design consultation process would be undertaken.”

Fenwick said city staff would continue to monitor the situation with the local skateboarding community and will frequently assess the capacity at each of Richmond’s three current skateparks – River Road, Thompson and Garden City.

The report detailed how the River Road skatepark is suffering from some “weathering” issues as a result of exposure to the elements, such as settlement of surfaces.

An assessment of the park by a skatepark design and construction firm in the spring highlighted a number of maintenance issues, which are being considered by city staff.

However, a preliminary estimate to install an all-weather shelter and lighting over the park was coming in at up to $940,000. The cost, according to the report, was too prohibitive for the city.

The two other parks, according to the report, are in good shape, with the Thompson Youth Park, in particular, still offering a “skateboarding experience that is unique in the region.”

young homeless couple in their early 20s are attracting attention in the neighborhood near Cooney and Saba roads after moving into the area last month.

“It’s getting cold and rainy, I’m a bit concerned about their health,” Shenwei Wang, a resident living in a building nearby, told the Richmond News.

“If some unexpected tragedy happened to these homeless youths, it would be a pity.”

The young couple dress well and look bizarrely out of place in their “home,” which is comprised of stacked suitcases, open umbrellas and a sheet of green plastic, tucked into a corner of a vacant building lot near Brighouse Station. “(The ‘home’) is waterproof, skunkproof, and the dragon doll scares raccoons away,” joked the young man, who did not want to give his name for fear he would be identified by family members or friends.

“Many people say I don’t look homeless; it’s true, I’m not supposed to be,” he said.

“I keep my head down when people walk by…I feel embarrassed.”

He told the News he and his partner have both been living on the street for almost a year since his parents kicked him out of the family home.

Since being on the street, the pair have been looking for a new abode, but have found nothing they could afford.

The gman said he’s working as an oncall laundry person, while his girlfriend is unemployed.

and BC Housing announced that the Salvation Army is to receive an expanded facility on 12040 Horseshoe Way next year, after the lease of its current shelter runs out.

The new shelter will have 36 beds for both men and women, and people with disabilities.

“We have a development plan for each individual who comes to the shelter, to help them go back to regular rental housing within six months, in an ideal situation,” said Lowell.

At the same time, the city is updating its affordable housing strategy, which includes new policies to build more affordable housing for people who are most at risk in terms of being homeless, according to Townsend.

“At the end of the day, the demand is outstripping the supply,” said Townsend.

“Addressing homelessness and affordable housing does not have a simple solution, it’s not something the city, by itself, can resolve.

“Running shelters is very expensive. We need to work with community partners, and need funding from the provincial and federal government,” Townsend added.

According to the city’s Emergency Services and Transitional Housing report released in 2015, it costs $1,932 per month for a sheltered bed.

Despite the neighbour’s concerns and more severe weather, it is unclear when the young homeless couple will be able to put a roof over their heads.

Lowell recommended the homeless individuals contact The Salvation Army to talk about their situation and needs.

“We’ll see what we can do now, if we can’t provide a bed.”

A new Homelessness Needs Strategy of the city may be updated in 2018.

t was only days after celebrating his first wedding anniversary that 24-year-old bornand-bred Richmondite Chris Ekren embarked on a fateful hunting trip near Squamish that would take his life in a freak car accident.

It was a trip that also involved a harrowing tale of survival and one that left his family and many friends in disbelief.

“He would have been an amazing father,” said Chris’ dad, Chad Ekren, while speaking to the Richmond News about two weeks after the Sept. 15 accident.

In his short time, Chris touched many lives.

He graduated from Richmond Christian School and played minor hockey for both local organizations, Richmond and Seafair, while growing up near Palmer secondary. He played guitar in his band Faint Echo, which was connected to his church community, and was an up-and-coming tradesman, having started his own framing company Forefront Framing in Ladner, where he recently moved into a condo with his wife, and one and only love, Marie Skerl, a local photographer.

Looking at a photo of the two, put on the coffee table by Rose Mary, Chris’ mom, Chad pondered a lost future with the children his son was planning to have.

And he attempted to rationalize what happened while holding back tears several times.

He finds an ounce of solace that Chris, a “level-headed” and “generous” man, had grown up, lamenting that the weekly Seattle Seahawks games they watched together were “great memories,” but were fewer and fewer as the seasons passed.

That’s because, as Chad explained, “When your children grow up . . . you grieve when they want to spend more time with friends, you grieve when they move out, but, you’re elated when they marry. You know they are to become one with their spouse.”

Chad doesn’t seek one explanation for what happened, although the obvious one, to an outsider, is that Chris wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

“They were on a dirt road; you’re hunting, you want to get in and out of your car,” he said.

19-year-old Liam Dennison, were on the hunt for game on a forestry road north of Squamish when, at dusk, the shoulder gave out, sending Chris’ truck, driven by Dennison, tumbling down a 150-foot cliff.

It was a freak accident. Speed and alcohol were not a factor.

“It was just dark, on a dangerous road, too close to the edge and the truck went down.”

Chris died on impact. Liam suffered serious injuries, including seven broken ribs, a punctured lung and a torn-up knee. Unable to crawl out of the wreckage, Liam slept in the truck overnight and pulled himself up to the road in the morning. He was miraculously found by a forestry worker at noon.

“Our family is prepared to walk with him through this process,” said Chad.

On Sunday, those who knew Chris are welcome to attend a memorial at South Delta Baptist Church at 1 p.m.

esley Snipes has done a lot of things in his life.

Most famously an action film star, he’s also a martial artist excelling in hapkido and karate. He has also earned an honorary doctorate, hence “Dr. Wesley Snipes” as he’s put in his author’s blurb.

Now, he has put all his experience together for a new venture: author.

Talon of God, co-written with another first-time author Ray Norman, is the story of Lauryn, a newly graduated ER doctor, and her efforts to rid Chicago of a dangerous new street drug that turns its users into evil murderous monsters.

Literally, they grow to enormous size, claws sprout from their fingers, and their skin shrivels and turns blue. Lauryn, her detective ex-boyfriend, and a mysterious sword-wielding stranger named Talon attempt to unravel the plot by a local drug kingpin and his corrupt supporters to save Chicago from the forces of evil.

Talon of God sets itself as a story about faith in God, though it does mention in passing that faith in any god (or gods) is all the same: humanity’s spirituality is key to “saving” themselves.

However, in the context of this book it’s all window dressing. It’s really just a pure action story with very clear lines drawn between good and evil.

Yet, despite the grand premise, it’s an oddly small, self-contained story.

Chicago is a city of millions of people, but only eight characters do anything at all.

If you’ve ever seen an ’80s action movie, Talon of God is a perfect example of what they might look like in novel form.

Like those movies, it isn’t concerned about motivation or resolution. It’s all about getting from one set piece to another.

Evil characters are evil simply because they want to be; there’s no deep back story.

The story’s pace comes at the cost of getting to know the characters, particularly the title character, Talon.

Who is he? Why did he come to save Lauryn? Why does he carry a sword in the middle of Chicago? We don’t get many clear answers to these questions.

If you are a fan of this kind of movie, go for it. Otherwise, it’s probably not worth your time. Check out Kevin Hearne or Jim Butcher for urban world-in-crisis fantasy instead.

ichmond residents hoping to learn Japanese got an important boost to their community resources last week after the Steveston Japanese Language School donated 100 new books to Richmond Public Library.

The Japanese books, valued at over $1,000, will be held at the Steveston branch.

“To ensure the students and other children in the community have access to books that can stimulate their interest and ability in reading the Japanese language, the (school) offered to make a donation to the library,” said chief librarian Susan Walters.

School principal Tomoko Suzuki ordered the books directly from Japan.

“There’s a lot of Japanese history in Steveston. These books will help people enjoy and appreciate and understand Japanese culture,” said Suzuki.

Walters noted the library has about 500

Japanese books in circulation.

Of Richmond’s 198,309 residents, 2,150 claim Japanese as their mother tongue in the city, whereas 1,095 speak the language most at home, according to the 2016 Census.

Richmond comprises about 10 per cent of B.C.’s Japanese-speaking population (21,350). Females account for those speakers, over males, by a two-to-one ratio.

The school operates out of the Steveston Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. While established in its present form in 1960, the Japanese community has had a long-standing history of education since the village’s inception. At the turn of the 20th century, the Japanese community was segregated and Japanese fishing families built their own school and hospital (although it was open to all). The Steveston Historical Society notes: “The Japanese Language School educated young children, with an increasing emphasis on English. Eventually the full BC curriculum was adopted and Japanese classes were taught after school.”

Before the Act came into force (in March 2014), the rules with respect to Wills were generally fairly narrow, though well understood.

ower Mainland school districts will receive $500,000 from the Industry Training Authority (ITA) to support the Youth Work in Trades Programs for the 2017-18 school year.

This funding will be used across the region to support youth apprentices in their communities.

Youth Work in Trades is a dual credit program that provides an opportunity for B.C. students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 to begin their apprenticeship journey.

The funds support school districts in connecting students with local employers to attain practical experience.

Students will earn a pay cheque while gaining credit toward their high school diploma and the work-based training portion of their trades apprenticeship.

An apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job and classroom training and typically takes four years to complete.

“By continuing to invest in the ITA Youth in Trades programs, we are supporting the future builders of our strong, sustainable and innovative economy,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training.

“Our government will continue to take a people-focused approach to build a better B.C. for all British Columbians,” she added.

The result has been slower economic grow and rising labour costs.

“More and more members have come to us and said they can’t find enough employees, there just are not enough applicants,” said Rob Akimow, chair of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and sales director at Richmond News.

“The News is also looking for sales people but resumes are few and far between,” he added.

Companies such as the Ashton Service Group are always under-staffed because new talent is hard to find, said the company’s founder Brian Williams.

“Our human resource situation is stretched and it is halting our business growth,” said Williams.

“We are maintaining the scale of the company, but we’re not growing because we can’t find enough talent.”

A lack of employees has also hit the restaurant sector in Richmond.

According to the B.C. Asian Restaurant Cafe Owners Association, there is a shortage of more than 500 employees in their members’ restaurants, many of which are located in Richmond.

“Some restaurant owners have to work themselves because they can’t find employees,” said Sunny Ho, vice president of the association, in an interview with the News last month.

The high cost of living in Richmond and the lack of transportation support for employees are key factors contributing to the shortage, according to Akimow.

“The high price of housing in Richmond is driving people away, and it’s hard to persuade someone living in Langley to come and work in Richmond, if they can find a job locally.”

He added, many companies offer highpaying jobs in trades and sales, but still fail to attract enough candidates.

“And the transportation system is focused on the Richmond downtown area, making it hard for young people who don’t have cars to commute to workplaces outside of downtown on a daily basis.”

RCCS TD Mid-Autumn Festival: Sunday, Oct. 1: From 12:30 p.m. at Lansdowne Centre, the Richmond Chinese Community Society (RCCS) is hosting its annual Mid-Autumn Festival, featuring multicultural performances such as a lion dance, martial arts, Chinese opera, folk dances, as well as Chinese calligraphy and game booths. Several community organizations will also be hosting exhibition booths. The festival is Thanksgiving for Chinese people. The opening ceremony will be at 12:30 p.m., with performances lasting until around 4 p.m. There will be 500 free moon cakes (sponsored by Lansdowne Centre) and colourful lanterns (sponsored

by TD) to take home.

slightly rainy day last Sunday sent out the last Steveston Farmers and Artisans’ Market of 2017 with a splash.

Despite the soggy surroundings the market was booming with local people, eager to get their hands on fresh produce while they still had the chance.

Meanwhile, the live band lifted our spirits with their sunny songs.

The market is over but that doesn’t mean that the fresh produce is gone. It’s harvest time and we have a bounty of beautiful vegetables coming out of the ground.

Beets, squashes, carrots, onions, garlic and potatoes are all here in abundance. Among the squashes is the prized Delicada Squash.

This little beauty has a thin rind that is actually edible — taking away a lot of the pain of preparing squash. Combine this with its sweet flavour and you have a winter squash lover’s dream.

Thanks to our amazing volunteers we also have a huge variety of products made from produce grown on our farm. A dedicated team of young farmers have provided us with a delicious assortment of pickled goodies including garlic scapes, carrots, beans and beets.

Our Tuesday and Thursday volunteers have made the best dried herb mixes I have ever tasted. The flavour is really strong and makes everything from roasted meat to spaghetti sauce taste amazing. They have also

made a variety of non-edible products such as bath salts scented with Rosemary and Lavender, and lip balms made with beeswax from our sustainably kept bee apiary.

Speaking of bees, we also have lots of incredible raw honey. Unlike most store bought honey, we don’t process it, meaning that it retains all its health benefits and flavour.

It’s multi floral, coming from nectar all over the farm. We also take great care of our bees — we believe in sustainable bee keeping and protecting pollinators so we will never extract if it could be harmful to our winged friends.

Finally, we still have some garlic left!

Whether you want it for eating fresh or to plant for your own garlic crop next year, we can help you. Varieties include Musica, Red Russian and Italian Softneck.

New look Canadians return to Oval Mark Booth

S

uccess isn’t measured just in wins when it comes to the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. Roster turnover is a big part of it too.

The fact the Greater Vancouver Canadians feature just three returning players reflects on their deep run last spring. The regional rep team came within a game of winning their first-ever provincial title. The majority has moved on to the junior ranks including six in the Western Hockey League.

“There is no such thing as a re-building year in this league,” said head coach Phil Alalouf. “We are not a junior league where you have three or four years to take a run at it again. It’s all about develop-

ment. You pick 20 players who are keen to get to the next level and do it all over again.”

The new-look Canadians opened the regular season with a pair of road wins over the South Island Royals and return home as part of the league’s Showcase Weekend at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The action-packed schedule features Greater Vancouver taking on the Kootenay Ice at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday and again on Sunday (10 a.m.).

The Canadians leaned heavily on their top end players a year ago for their post-season run.

The trio of elite WHL prospects Sasha Mutala, Scott Atkinson and Henry Rybinski was the most productive line in the league. Chris Douglas was another top end sniper who left the team in January for Red Deer.

Alalouf doesn’t have the same impact players at

his disposal but suggests this year’s team will have much better balance. That was evident during the weekend sweep on the Island where eight different players scored goals in 5-0 and 5-3 victories.

“This team has a stronger core. There isn’t that big gap like we had last year and you can see it in our dressing room,” continued Alalouf. “They know they all need to battle for one another. There is no one sitting there who doesn’t feel they are a big part of this team.”

The Canadians feature seven Richmond players on their roster, including 15-year-old blueliners Noah Boroditsky, Hayden Hurst, Vincent Thrum and Hayden Tuba. Rounding out the local contingent are Edmonton Oil Kings prospect Tyler Horstmann, along with Van Lupien and Brendon Jorssen.

Richmond pair helps B.C. win medals at Field Lacrosse Nationals ichmond players helped B.C. teams bring home medals from the 2017 Canadian Field Lacrosse Championships, held earlier this month in Saskatoon.

Matthias Campbell was a member of the goldmedal winning U15 B.C. team that captured the

Alumni Cup with a thrilling 10-8 overtime win over Ontario in the championship game.

B.C.’s attack scored a tournament-high 80 goals in five games, helping them pull away in extra time to win gold and put an end to Ontario’s run of three straight titles at the U15 age group.

Meanwhile, Sewanee Baker was a member of B.C.’s silver medal team in the U18 division.

Ontario captured its third straight First Nations Trophy with a hard-fought 17-13 win.

Baker was recognized for his strong tournament by being named to the U18 all-star game.

ARJAN BHULLAR

It was a historic month for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Arjan Bhullar. The 31-year-old Richmond native became the first Sikh and South Asian fighter to step into the UFC Octagon when he defeated Brazil’s Luis Henrique during UFC 215 in Edmonton. With hundreds of family and friends among the near capacity crowd at Rogers Place, Arjan took control of the fight with a dominating second round to remain undefeated in his Mixed Martial Arts career. He grew up as a successful amateur wrestler, highlighted by a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, before launching his MMA career. He is expected to step back into the UFC Octagon and continue his rise in the heavyweight division later this year. The News is proud to recognize Arjan as athlete of the month for September.

Top Taekwondo athletes in Richmond for provincials

Karate tourney taking place at Olympic Oval

ver 900 athletes from 22 countries will be at the Richmond Olympic Oval this weekend for the 7th Karate-do Goju-kai Global Championships.

The event represents the largest international karate event being hosted in Canada before the sport’s long awaited and first-ever appearance in the Olympic Games in 2020.

The Karate-do Goju-kai Global Championships are held on a different continent on a quadrennial basis. The previous tourney was hosted

by India in 2013.

Events include Kumite, Kata, Team Kumite and Para-Karate.

■ It was an action-packed weekend at the Richmond Olympic Oval for the 2017 ITF Taekwondo Provincial Championships that saw athletes compete in a variety of categories.

TF Taekwondo practitioners from throughout B.C. converged on the Richmond Olympic Oval last weekend for the 2017 Provincial Championships.

This year’s event was hosted by Darius Andaya, a 5th degree International Instructor and Chief Instructor of DSA Taekwondo, based in Burnaby.

Students from all ages and all level of skills vied for gold in various events such as Sparring, Patterns, Power and Specialty Breaking. Among the weekend’s highlights was the introduction of the Special Needs Division– designated for Taekwondo students with physical and/or mental disabilities.

This division was championed by Andaya to promote a fair playing field for athletes limited by their conditions.

It was a very successful competition by all accounts, judging by the praises received after the tournament.

Andaya thanked all the sponsors ViaSport, Bushido and Richmond Hosting, and most especially all the umpires, officials and other volunteers who provided their services for the competition.

“These people came to the tournament expecting nothing in return yet provided everything they could for the sport we all love,” he said.

Devils host Kamloops Saturday to open SCWHL regular season T

he Richmond Devils will be relying on a more balanced attack when they open the South Coast Women’s Hockey League regular season on Saturday night at the Richmond Ice Centre.

The Devils are coming off an impressive 2016-17 campaign that saw them win their first-ever league title then place third at the provincial championships.

They were led by Lindsay Dipietro who topped the senior “A” circuit in scoring with 37 points in 20 games. The former Wayne State University standout is among a group of

players who have joined the Fraser Valley Jets this season where she is playing for her summer ball hockey coach.

Meanwhile, impressive rookie Yvonne Mikulcik, who was second in team scoring, has put her career on hold to attend school in Alberta. It means the Devils will be leaning on several players to carry the scoring load under head coach Tony Cheema.

So far, it’s been business as usual with an unbeaten preseason that included three wins in four games.
