ednesday’s paper hadn’t even landed on doorsteps before my inbox was flooded.

More than a few people had strong opinions about a couple of stories we had already posted online.

First was the story about a “luxury car condo,” a plan to build a facility where luxury car owners can park their Lamborghinis and Ferraris. Along with parking space, the two-storey condos will include kitchen, bar, games room, starting at $600,000.

Many of our readers were incensed that, in a municipality where there’s a dearth of affordable housing and the vacancy rate is below one per cent, anyone would have the audacity to build condos just for luxury cars.

Others noted the facility would be built on industrial land, so wouldn’t house people anyway and it’s not up to a private real estate investment and development company to provide affordable housing, if it doesn’t want to. If it wants to house iguanas-only, that’s up to them, provided it adheres to zoning and development regulations, which it appears this car condo does.

All I can say is what we build says much about who we are and what we value. Some days that makes me prouder than others.

The other story that had our wires buzzing was about a group of businesses protesting the fact the Salvation Army intends to open a homeless shelter in their area. The group would probably get only limited sympathy save for the fact one of those businesses is a private gymnastics facility that caters to kids and is open until 7 p.m.

To drive the point home, the owner fashioned a poster that has happy, playful children doing gymnastics on one side and ominous-looking men shooting heroin and smoking crack on the other. His point is that the two should not be side by side.

The business owners have gone out of their way to say they support housing the homeless, just not here. The city and Salvation Army have gone out of their way to assure everyone that the shelter will be well monitored and there’s no need to fear.

The feedback on our Facebook page was overwhelmingly in support of the homeless shelter. Many readers note that it’s the lack of affordable housing (building too many car condos) that has created the crises in the first place. Others noted that being homeless doesn’t mean you’re a criminal, and where’s our empathy?

However, one person said he wouldn’t take his kids to a facility if there’s a homeless shelter next door.

“My kid’s safety would trump everything.”

Okay, but I’d argue we’re all a lot safer when people are housed. Besides, I’m confident the Salvation Army will run a tight ship that won’t impact area businesses. One person on Facebook noted she’s lived next door the Salvation Army’s current shelter on Shell Road, and it’s been a great neighbour.

But, most importantly, it’s just the right thing to do for the homeless and our kids.

Giving someone an opportunity to get off the street is invaluable — as is exposing our young people to the realities of life and fostering a sense of gratitude and compassion.

Councillors Carol Day and Harold Steves, and Justin Fung of Housing Action for Local Taxpayers are correct in their critical analyses of the situation, particularly as they relate to the fact that we do not just see a disparity in levels of wealth and influence in this community but also in both basic values and concerns about how such disparities will eventually affect the character of our community.

Homeless people? Parents forced to raise families in rented 600 sq. ft. apartments (if they can find one)?

Not to worry — that poor Bugatti will soon have a very large, safe, and warm place to live. Comforting to know that our society has its priorities in correct order, isn’t it?

Dear Editor, Re: “Developer eyes luxury condos...for cars,” News, Sept. 20.

I guess if the super wealthy need boathouses for their yachts and hangers for their private aircraft, it stands to reason that they would also want places to house their luxury cars.

The new Hungerford Properties Trove development in Richmond will evidently provide what luxury car owners seem to desperately need, and why shouldn’t they be accommodated? After all, in a community where the growing disparity between the haves and the-have-nots is clearly evident in every neighbourhood and hard-working families are having an increasingly hard time finding, never mind affording, decent housing, we must ensure that every Lamborghini, Bugatti,

Dear Editor, Re: “Mayor Brodie applauds cancellation of George Massey Tunnel replacement bridge,” News, Sept. 6 Well, there goes any quick resolution to our tunnel problems. We’re now going to study alternatives that have been studied to death. I don’t recall Richmond electing any NDP candidates.

I don’t care whether it’s a bridge or a tunnel, just that we get it quickly. But that’s not going to happen with contracts and bids cancelled.

Likely, the Pattullo replacement will take priority, and any start on construction to alleviate the tunnel headache will await a future election.

What is it about Ireland?

The large insurance and investment company Royal London Ireland reported earlier this week that more than 70% of people of Ireland have no Will (in Canada, by comparison, the figure is roughly 50%).

The company spokesperson, Mr. Joe Charles, said: “As a nation, it would appear that we are not great at planning for the future. Pensions, wills – anything that seems to be particularly long-term in nature – is, based on our research, often avoided and ignored by a large portion of Ireland’s population. This is understandable; however, the absence of estate planning in families can often be the source of confusion and anxiety for those left behind.”

Mr. Charles’ remarks are familiar. In my view, the figure of 70% is surprising in a Western, democratic country. But it takes time for a population to become familiar with this kind of planning, and so perhaps further education is needed there.

Chinese I know don’t like Chinese-only signs either Dear Editor, I am Chinese and have been living in Richmond for more than 25 years now.

Every Chinese-Canadian I know/talked to does not think Chinese-only signs are appropriate.

There is the saying that “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. This is Canada; let’s do it the Canadian way, although the law allows the freedom of speech.

Also, for the fact that our children are educated here and most of the time their primary spoken language is English. If you go to the park/school playground, you will find 99 per cent of the Asian-Canadian kids there communicate to each other exclusive-

ly in English. And they are going to grow up that way — English only. And that’s exactly what happened to my two children too.

No matter how hard I encourage them to study/speak Chinese, they are reluctant to do so. So the primary language I use with them is English.

The reality is most of these Chinese Canadian kids are going to grow up not being able to read those Chinese signs. I and my family and friends support the signage bylaws.

Let’s do it, not just for the harmony of the city, but also for the future generations.

Quebec car insurance 10 times less than ICBC Dear Editor, I just came back from Montreal spending time with my folks. I always knew that the auto insurance premium rates are lower in Quebec than in B.C. However, I never realized it was that much lower.

Comparing the auto third party (or basic) insurance, I paid $1,043 for a year in B.C. versus my brother in Montreal, who paid $106.

Excuse me?

Myself and my brother are driving a vehicle of the same class and age, and our driving records and experience are almost the same.

Why is he only paying 10 per cent of what I paid? Yet, ICBC just reported $500 million in financial losses and, as a result, announced a 6.4 per cent rate hike effective Nov. 1, 2017.

Someone has got to stop the madness.

Something is just so not right.

The truth is, in Quebec, the auto insurance

is a competitive commercial business. And as such must be efficiently run to be profitable and survive. Whereas ICBC, a Crown monopoly, can get as much money as it needs (such as government debt) or wants (such as CEO bonuses) from all British Columbians.

I believe transportation is an essential need of the people. It can’t and shouldn’t be used as a cash grab. All British Columbians should have the freedom to choose their auto insurance needs. If we do nothing, one can expect premium rates to go up year over year, as ICBC does not know how, or see the need, to run its business effectively.

Driving in B.C. will soon become unaffordable for many families. I encourage all readers to write David Eby MLA to demand him to call for a B.C. referandum to decide on dismantling/privatizing ICBC. ased on newly-released income data from the 2016 Census, high poverty rates continue to plague Richmond thanks to suspiciously low reported levels of income.

“Good grief,” exclaimed urban planner and director of Simon Fraser University City Program Andy Yan, when he viewed region-wide data that showed Richmond at the bottom.

Richmond’s poverty rate (living with low after-tax income based on average household needs) is 22.4 per cent, while Metro Vancouver is at 16.5 per cent and Canada’s rate is 14.2 per cent. Its child poverty rate is 25.6 per cent, higher than any other metropolitan area (not including specific cities) in Canada.

Not to dismiss very real poverty that exists in Richmond, Yan said the figures are likely skewed due to underreporting of income.

While reported incomes in Richmond have grown above the regional, provincial and national rates over the past decade, according to the 2016 Census, they still remain well below average across all accounts, leaving many, once again, scratching their heads, considering the city’s wildly absurd housing prices.

Richmond’s median total household income is $65,241, whereas the region’s is $72,662. Canada’s household income sits at $70,336. Since 2005, Richmond’s household income has risen 15.9 per cent, from $56,285. The regional growth rate was 12.2 per cent while across Canada, incomes increased 10.8 per cent.

When asked about the performance of the city’s local economy, Coun. Derek Dang, who sits on council’s economic advisory board, said he believes it to be strong.

“No, I don’t believe the economy is bad.

We definitely have successful businesses,” concluded Dang.

But, “I’m not sure [income] reporting on the Census accurately displays what we’re doing,” said Dang, who hypothesized whether well-paying businesses outgrow the city or if the city has too many low-paying service jobs, such as at the airport.

And so, “Maybe, in the back of my mind, maybe people aren’t declaring their income,” he said.

It’s a hypothesis floated recently by real estate analyst Richard Wozny, of Site Economics, who told the Vancouver Sun last week the census data highlights “inappropriate reporting of family incomes,” leaving one to wonder if “Canada has become a freeloader society.”

Speaking to the Richmond News last month, Wozny outlined in his report Low Incomes and High House Prices in Metro Vancouver how Richmond’s incomes are entirely out of touch with housing costs.

“Richmond and Vancouver now have amongst the highest income-to-house price ratios in the world and such an anomaly should trigger a closer look at factors that underlie this disparity.

“It is important to note that a ratio of five is considered overpriced and our region is over 20. Burnaby is 23, Richmond is 28 and neither is dominated by renters or seniors,” wrote Wozny, adding that all cities have relatively the same ratio of emptynester, pensioning boomers — a factor that See Brodie page 7

Yan described the income reporting in Richmond as “weird.”

“For the most part, you see [low incomes] in the Downtown Eastside. But then you also see what’s happening in Burnaby and Coquitlam . . . And then comes Richmond.

It really is that section on No. 3 Road, that’s just weird,” said Yan. Yan suggests the combination of poorlypaying jobs and the influx of foreign money is, in part, a culprit of the income-housing price disconnect.

Noting residents must declare global income, Yan said underreported incomes is the likely reason Richmond is so low.

Yan said growth in residential real estate is disconnected from income growth. Low interest rates (“cheap money”) play a role but they’re found across the country where there is no disconnect.

“How much of it is poor paying jobs vs this issue of underreported incomes?” asked Yan. Local factors such as wealth immigration and land constraints should be part of the conversation.

“It’s more a series of multiple compounding factors,” he said.

That said, “When it comes to university grads who are between [age] 25-64, Metro Vancouver incomes are the lowest and yet our housing costs are some of the highest.

It says something to populations that have access to global wealth,” said Yan. Richmond and Vancouver’s Point Grey have the highest rates of investor-class immigrants, according to a UBC study. It also has the fewest Syrian refugees per capita in B.C. (four out of 1,938 B.C.-settled Syrians settled in Richmond, to September 2016). Federal data shows after 10 years, the former will pay less income tax than the latter.

When asked why Richmond’s reported incomes are so low and whether it is reflective of a poor local economy, Mayor Malcolm Brodie chalked the figures up to Richmond having lots of co-op and social housing (largely built in the 1970s and ‘80s). Like Dang, he contended the economy is strong.

In 2015, Richmond reported a record $1 billion in development permits. In the Thompson neighbourhood, where median reported incomes in some census tracts (small areas) are even below the city’s median, new houses are being routinely being sold for over $3 million and some are sold for over $6 million. The city will soon be home to luxury car condos in east Richmond.

Tax dodger wants house back A

Hong Kong woman has filed a civil claim against her ex-boyfriend, demanding he be removed from the title of a single-family home after she allegedly used him to buy the property to dodge a 15 per cent tax on residential properties for non-residents.

According to a notice of civil claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court on Monday, Jen-

former long-time Richmond resident and teacher, who is presently sifting through rubble in the streets of Mexico City following a devastating earthquake Tuesday, has a message to B.C.’s past and present governments tasked to seismically upgrade 25 Richmond elementary schools that are at high risk of failure from a similar event.

“Get on it,” said Chester Rutkowski, 35, an English teacher and academic consultant based in Mexico City.

“When I was in elementary school (William Bridge) 25 years ago, I remember teachers warning and preparing us for ‘the big one’ that was to hit within the next 50-100 years. And what has been done since then?”

Tuesday’s quake “was more up and down and also left and right. Where I was, it felt less intense except the first 10 or so seconds, which were sense-numbing . . . For 30 or more minutes

afterwards, the ground felt unstable, quite similar to the feeling of vertigo I’ve experienced,” he said.

The experience stresses the need for proper emergency planning and leadership in workplaces and schools. He said while he remained calm inside his school, others didn’t.

“We had just had a drill where everything was orderly. In our room at work, we all stood by the walls in ‘safe zones.’ But when the real one hit, everyone lost their shit and ran for the stairs (we were on the third floor),” said Rutkowski.

“I went to help bring water and medicine in and move rubble out,” said Rutkowski.

“You cannot imagine the feeling unless you experience it. All the [things] I’ve seen on TV have been irrelevant until now . . . It was extremely sobering. My mentality, or worldview, has changed and the same for almost all my housemates . . . The full scope of it all didn’t hit me until I was helping clear rubble from a collapsed home,” he added.

Accused of killing wife, man stands trial again Alan Campbell

A

lmost a year to the day that his first trial kicked off, a Richmond man once more stands accused of the second-degree murder of his wife on their wedding anniversary.

A second trial for James Jian Hua Wu started this week, after the original, six-week trial concluded in November of 2016 with a hung jury, unable to reach a verdict after 13 days of deliberation.

The process was thought to be one of the longest jury deliberations in the history of the B.C. judicial system.

On May 4, 2014, the body of Wu’s wife, Jin Jenna Cheng, was found with multiple stab wounds in the hallway outside the Granville Avenue apartment unit where she lived with her husband.

Wu was found next to her body at the complex, which is close to the intersection of Granville Avenue and Gilbert Road. He was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder.

He is now standing trial at the B.C. Supreme Court for the second time in front of a new jury.

At last year’s trial, it was alleged that Wu had used a cleaver to inflict injuries to the neck and head area of his wife.

The Crown’s theory at the time was that

it was a case of extreme domestic violence during a difficult and frustrating period in their marriage.

The court heard previously that, after police arrived, they found the accused and the victim lying on the floor outside their seventhfloor apartment suite in the 7000-block of Granville Avenue. The victim had been stabbed multiple times.

The defence called several expert witnesses who testified that at the time of the offence, Wu’s mental functioning was impaired and he was in the middle of a “dissociative” episode.

After the first trial ended, Dan McLaughlin, a spokesman for B.C.’s criminal justice branch, said the jury deliberations in the case “may very well be” the longest ever in the province.

“Unfortunately, we don’t track those types of statistics so I can’t officially confirm,” he said in an email.

The longest previous case is believed to be the Greeks gang murder trial, wherein the jury took 12 days before finding five men guilty of various offences in connection with three homicides. That verdict came in November 2012.

A jury in the trial of Yuan Xi William Tang, of Richmond, who was accused in the slaying of his wife, Lianjie Guo, went 11 days before finding Tang guilty of second-degree murder.

That verdict was reached in November 2015.

hirty years ago, one of Richmond’s most famous sons, Rick Hansen, completed an incredible journey — his now renowned and celebrated Man in Motion World Tour.

Hansen, a world-class wheelchair marathoner and Paralympic medalist, spent 26 months traversing 40,000 kilometres in his wheelchair across 34 countries on four continents.

In the process, Hansen and his small crew raised $26 million for research into spinal cord injury and, in the last three decades, has improved the lives of people with disabilities around the world through his Rick Hansen Foundation.

To mark the auspicious anniversary of his world tour, Hansen and author Jake MacDonald have released a book, Rick Hansen’s Man In Motion World Tour: 30 Years Later — A Celebration of Courage, Strength, and the Power of Community.

Written by MacDonald, with a foreword by Hansen, proceeds from the book will go to the Rick Hansen Foundation.

hat unites the different communities of Metro Vancouver nowadays? Language?

No. Congestion? Yes. The congested state of our roads can literally tie us together, from south to north, east to west. But when I was a little girl, congested (from the Latin “congere,” heap up) described a head or chest cold.

Road congestion was unimaginable when my mother and I arrived from Germany in October, 1956. My father (who’d arrived in May) picked us up at the train station downtown in Vancouver and brought us to our new home in Burkeville on Sea Island. There were then two bridges from Vancouver to Richmond over the North Arm of the river, the Fraser Street Bridge and the Marpole Bridge. Before we got our own car, a VW beetle, we often walked from Burkeville to South Vancouver over the wooden Marpole Bridge. Up river, we saw the Oak Street Bridge under construction. To those of us who knew only the humble but serviceable wooden bridges, it looked futuristic.

The Oak Street Bridge opened in the summer of 1957. It was the first toll bridge and the first modern bridge I ever crossed. The toll (applied until 1959) was 25 cents, the same amount it cost to see a movie, so in those days, 25 cents wasn’t exactly peanuts.

My father bought multiple-trip tickets. I still see them in my mind’s eye — pink and about the size of a pre-computer library due-date card. A tollbooth attendant clipped the ticket

each time we crossed the bridge. As a child I thought the word toll was funny because in German, there’s a word with the same spelling that means crazy. The toll we paid on the bridge is an Old English word for tax.

It comes, like the German “Zoll” (customs, tax), from the Latin “telonium,” toll house, which derives from the Greek “telos” (duty, tax, expense).

Abolishing tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges was one of our new NDP provincial government’s campaign promises.

The NDP has also halted the previous government’s project for a $3.5 billion ten-lane bridge to replace the four-lane Massey Tunnel between Delta and Richmond. The monster bridge was supposed to ease traffic congestion, but all it would have done is shove the congestion further north along Highway 99 to the older and smaller bridges (such as the Oak Street Bridge) between Richmond and Vancouver.

Will traffic congestion go away if we build more roads and bigger bridges? Evidently not. If the ancient philosopher Aristotle were rambling through Metro Vancouver today, he’d change his tune from “Nature abhors a vacuum” to “Traffic abhors a vacuum.” Build for increased traffic, and traffic will increase until congestion is reached again.

Our dire traffic malaise needs a decongestant. One cure would be to stop putting more cars on the road and start developing rapid transit systems connecting all of Metro Vancouver. Let’s put congestion back in the nose, where we know how to handle it with hankies and spray.

A day for our seniors

Welcome Back all Minor Hockey and Adult Hockey Teams for the 2017-2018 Winter Hockey Season!!

S

eniors Day celebrations kick off in Richmond next Friday, Sept. 29 with a “Positive Aging Campaign,” two art exhibits and a breakfast social.

The celebration – being hosted by the City of Richmond and its community partners – also includes a photo campaign, showcasing positive images of adults 55 and over living in Richmond.

This year’s campaign focuses on the talents, contributions and participation of seniors and highlights those who continue to be active in the community.

The photo campaign will be displayed at Minoru Place Activity Centre and Richmond community centres for one week starting Sunday, Oct. 1.

The public is also invited to attend two free art exhibits celebrating seniors in the community: Portraits of City Centre at City Centre Community Centre (C4) and Memories of Place at Minoru Place Activity Centre.

Portraits of City Centre features photographic images of seniors in the community and celebrates their stories and individual histories. The collection will be on display throughout the month of October.

Memories of Place features video recollections from Richmond pioneers collected at the Canada 150 Pioneer Luncheon held in the spring of this year; a photography exhibit capturing seniors from Minoru Place Activity Centre celebrating the history and stories of the centre; and an exhibit from the Minoru Seniors Society’s Chinese Calligraphy Group exploring the concept of place.

Experts said WeChat/Ali Pay’s entry to Canada does not only make it more convenient for businesses and Chinese consumers, but will also have an impact on the wider economy.

“The promised 1.5 per cent service fee and zero currency exchange charge are very competitive,” said Werner Antweiler, director of Sauder School of Business Prediction Markets.

“This will put pressure on the conventional credit-card based payment services in North America, which are way too expensive and a bit antiquated.”

He adds that the service fee of Visa and other credit cards can go as high as three to five per cent.

“Obviously it (WeChat/Ali Pay) will start in those communities with strong relations to China.

“But if merchants start promoting these services and roll in some of the base of Visa, MasterCard and other providers, they will have to figure out a way to make their services cheaper,” said Antweiler.

He explained that the business model of WeChat/Ali Pay is based on ancillary services instead of commissions, which allows them to keep the fee low.

Antweiler adds the fact that WeChat/Ali Pay is connected to the debit card instead of credit card can help “get people to only buy things they can afford rather than buying it with the credit debt that many consumers face today.

“Mobile payment is the trend and competitions in this area are always welcome. I will be very interested to see how the new payments will catch on.”

Increasingly, stores and services in Richmond have notices saying: “Welcome to use ‘WeChat Pay’ and/or ‘Ali Pay’” – two mobile payment systems that are prevalent in China, respectively associated with WeChat (a popular chatting app) and Alibaba (a Chinese online retail giant).

Consumers can now pay for products in select Richmond stores with their Chinese money from a WeChat/Ali wallet linked to their Chinese bank account, via a simple scan of their phone.

After one to three days, stores will receive the payment in their Canadian bank accounts converted into Canadian money by real-time Chinese Yuan currency rates. This all happens through local tech companies such as Motion Pay and IOT Pay. “It has been very popular,” said Dennis Li, president of Richmond-based Universal Learning Institute, who started accepting WeChat Pay earlier this month.

“Students don’t need to pay for currency exchange or the fee to transfer money overseas through the bank. It has saved so much money and work, “For us, it’s faster, more convenient, and we still receive payment in Canadian dollars.”

Li said the whole payment process can take less than one minute and payers will receive a paper receipt as well as an e-receipt.

For every transaction, the merchant needs to pay the tech company a service fee of 1.5 per cent, which Li thinks is reasonable.

“We have to pay a service fee for purchases with a credit card anyway, at the same or a higher rate.”

Ottawa-based Motion Pay now has more than 600 partner merchants across Canada, almost half of which are in B.C., including some big names like Birks and Tom Lee Music, according to the company’s CEO Riven Zhang.

“I went to China for a business trip in 2015 and found so many stores accepting mobile payment,” said Zhang.

“People didn’t carry wallets but paid by their phone instead — it was so awesome.

I thought it was a good idea to bring to Canada.”

After reaching agreements with Tencent

Lansdowne Centre was once again faced with an all too familiar sign of the times Tuesday after another big-box retailer announced it is facing financial difficulties.

Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. and Canada, leaving the Richmond store’s future up in the air.

However, the retail toy giant said it intends to keep its stores open and running the business “as usual.” Meanwhile, Lansdowne Centre’s marketing manager Bronwyn Bailey told the Richmond News the mall has not had any communication with Toys R Us following the announcement.

Melanie Teed-Murch, president of Toys R Us and Babies R Us Canada, said in a news release that the company will be “restructuring” its finances while proceeding under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, which is analogous to America’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

The Associated Press reported the company has $5 billion of debt. Toys R Us stated Tuesday that it has received a commitment for over $3 billion in debtor-inpossession (“DIP”) financing from various lenders.

Teed-Murch insisted all gift cards, warranties and returns and customer loyalty programs, including the baby registry “will continue to be honoured as normal.”

The company said it is forging ahead with new, in-store experiences, such as: interactive stations for kids; mobile pay; free, in-store pick up within one hour; and expanded ship-from-store options.

Such measures are thought by financial analysts to be in response to Toys R Us competing with online shopping meccas such as Amazon and EBay. There are 82 Toys R Us stores in Canada, with one in Langley recently opening in July.

Should Toys R Us eventually close shop at Lansdowne, it would be added to a growing list of big retailers who have, over the years, failed to keep a foot in Richmond. The mall has a large empty space where Future Shop used to be and its southeast wing is vacant until T & T Supermarket moves into the bottom floor next summer. The 64,000-squarefoot top floor remains vacant but Bailey said the mall is looking at lease options.

The space was formerly a Target, which quickly flopped in April 2015 after a year of operating. Prior to Target was a Zellers and before that the once-iconic Eaton’s.

The 50-acre Lansdowne Centre site is slated for huge residential and commercial development over the next few years, although it’s understood the early phases will be built around the existing mall.

hree business leaders from the B.C. farming, real estate and retail industries shared their insights regarding business in Richmond at a special Richmond Chamber of Commerce event on Wednesday.

Rick Ilich, founder and president of Townline Group of Companies, Peter Dhillon, chairman of Ocean Spray Cranberries Ltd. and Darrell Jones, president of Overwaitea Food Group, were joined by more than 240 attendees at Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel to talk about issues such as housing affordability, the agricultural land reserve and business education.

The event was moderated by Coun. Alexa Loo, who posed questions about everything from ethics and goals to challenges and visions for the future, at the panel-style luncheon.

A question about concerns regarding housing affordability, she directed at developer Ilich.

“I don’t have a solution,” he said, although he added there should be planning policies in place that would allow more smaller homes to be built.

“There is not enough supply for a big demand, and people are living in smaller and smaller homes.

He also argued that not everyone is going to be able to afford to live in Richmond.

“But I don’t buy it when people say ‘my family is here, so I have to live here.’ Economics is economics.

“Some people have to move to other places because that’s where they can afford, which is not necessarily a bad thing.”

The three leaders agreed that the most important quality for a successful entrepreneur is integrity, while also emphasizing the necessity of giving back to the wider community.

“My core value is that my ‘house’ needs to be in order,” said Ilich.

“We need to keep our province in good shape, make sure youths are going in the right direction and that seniors live

with dignity.”

Jones agreed business need to put the community first.

“To differentiate us from big players like Walmart, we need to be closely connected to local businesses and to create local fun and excitement for consumers.”

Dhillon, whose company oversees hundreds of acres of farmland in Richmond, would like the City of Richmond to conduct an updated agriculture land review (ALR).

“The review has remained the same since 1972, but the land is now completely different, which doesn’t make any sense,” said Dhillon.

“Farming is changing and new technologies are now much more advanced. A review and adult discussions need to happen. It irritates me when non-farmers use ALR for political uses.”

Jones said he’s thrilled by the passion young entrepreneurs show and encourages more to start their own small businesses.

“Small businesses are the life blood and back-bone of society,” said Jones.

“And it’s very rewarding.”

He hopes more young people will have a chance to learn about economics and business, no matter what direction they go in the future.

“Everyone should know how business works because it will

help you with everything you do,” added Jones.

For those who also strive to be successful entrepreneurs, Jones advised them to “be honest, work hard and never give up.”

“And always have a plan B,” added Ilich.

Dhillon believes the key to success is to follow your passion.

“Do what you like to do. Life is not long,” he said.

“If you ask ‘who would you love to become in your next life’ and the answer is not yourself, you need to make a change.”

he Richmond Adult Soccer Association has kicked off what promises to be a even more competitive season with potentially fewer disruptions thanks to some new wrinkles.

Metro Vancouver’s coldest winter in 30 years wreaked havoc with the popular all-city senior circuit — forcing teams to sit idle for an extended period in January following the usual holiday break.

“It was our worst year ever and very frustrating to deal with,” recalled RASA president Steve Valenzuela. “We are certainly doing what we can to avoid it again.”

The league has tweaked its schedule by playing until mid-December — an additional week from previous years. “We’re hoping that extra week will give us some more room at the back end (of the season) if we need,” Valenzuela explained.

The 49-year-old Don Taylor League Cup competition — named after the long serving president — also will have a different look.

Instead of a random draw to determine all match-ups, the RASA has adapted the FA Cup format that will see qualifying rounds featuring Masters and Second Division teams. First Division clubs will now begin play in the Round of 16.

“It’s our biggest competition and the draw has always been done out of a hat. Ideally, we want it to be progressively more competitive and avoid some of those real mismatches we have seen in the earlier rounds. It’s going to be good for all teams,” continued Valenzuela.

Through two weeks of play, including the association’s annual opening kickoff at South Arm Park last weekend, West Coast FC, All Blacks and Rain City sit atop the First Division table with 2-0-0 records. All Blacks’ results include a 1-0 win over two-time defending champion AC Richmond on Sunday in an early season showdown of the top two clubs from a year ago.

Newly-promoted Club Ireland Celtic are 0-2 but did hang tough with Rain City in its opener.

Meanwhile, Pacific Dragon is hoping its relegation to the Second Division this season will be a brief one. They are 2-0-0 out of the gate including a 3-2 victory over the Hammerheads last weekend.

The league has welcomed two new clubs into the division — United FC and Tarzanspor.

Midget Rush features Richmond talent T here will be a distinctive local flavour to the Fraser Valley Rush this season.

The B.C. Female Midget AAA Hockey League team announced Richmond Ravens products Katie Chan, Jaden Cherry, Jamie Grinder and Janey Wilson have been named to the roster for the 2017-18 season.

Wilson returns to the Rush after compiling seven points including three goals during the 2016-17 campaign. Chan, Cherry and Grinder have all made the jump from the Richmond Bantam “A” Ravens.

Chan is stepping up to Midget a year ahead of schedule after a dominant season with the Ravens. She managed four points, including three goals, in two call-up games

with the Rush a year ago and is shortlisted for the provincial U18 team.

Grinder was also used an affiliate player by the Rush and managed a goal in a pair of games. Cherry compiled five points for the Ravens at last spring’s provincials.

The Rush not only compete in the province’s top Midget rep league but also will travel across the country to be tested. Their tournament schedule includes stops in Calgary, Saskatchewan and Toronto.

The team is coached by Delaney Collins while longtime Richmond coach Al Wozney serves as general manager and an assistant coach. Shannon Butler and Joey Ali round out the coaching staff.

Free junior clinic coming to Mayfair Lakes

he Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is hosting a free Ford Go Golf Clinic as part of its Ford Fall Series Oct. 7-8 at Mayfair Lakes in Richmond.

The 90-minute session will be overseen by CPGA Professionals is presented by Cam Clark Ford, and is for kids ages 6-12. No experience is necessary and golf clubs will
