t’s the New Year — according to the Jewish calendar. Rosh Hashanah (Sept. 20) marks a turning of the calendar to 5778.

While it’s still 2017 in my world, I have to concur, it makes sense to start a new year in September.

Fall seems like a good time to reset the clock, sign up for courses and make resolutions.

I’ve just returned from three weeks of vacation and, as is usually the case after time away from my regular routine, I come back with new goals and a fresh perspective — it lasts about a week.

This trip involved body surfing in Lake Huron (it’s amazing how big those waves get) touring the parliament buildings in Ottawa, celebrating my nephew’s beautiful wedding in Toronto and even taking in a University of Michigan football game. I have to pause on this one as it’s quite the phenomenon. We’re talking attendance of 111,000. Just for perspective, the average attendance for a BC Lions game is 20,000.

Even the NFL’s Detroit Lions only get about 60,000 — Go Blue.

But among all the wonderful sights and sounds we took in, perhaps the most surprising was Detroit.

Before we went, people seriously questioned our judgement. “Don’t get shot,” was a common refrain.

In fact, these days the biggest tourist attraction in the Motor City is “poverty porn.” People cruise (in locked cars) down economically decimated streets to gawk at the carnage. And, indeed, there is carnage, not just in the rough areas of town. Large, stately, brick homes stand with busted windows and blackened doors. It looks like a fire had gutted the inside as people had simply walked away from the homes they could no longer afford.

But the surprising part of Detroit was discovering a gem in the heart of town in the form of the Detroit Institute of Art, (DIA). It’s a vast art gallery and in it are the angry and inspiring murals by Diego Rivera, the Mexican artist and ardent socialist of the 1930s.

He had been commissioned to paint the Ford plant that defined Detroit at the time; he did so with intensity, humour and a passion for social justice.

Also at the DIA was a powerful, special exhibit, “The Art of Rebellion: Black Art of the Civil Rights Movement.”

We toured the DIA just after visiting the Motown Museum and Hitsville USA, the little house where Berry Gordy started Motown Records, a label that didn’t just pump out hits but celebrate the spirit of a community that had long been repressed. (Fun fact: Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech was first delivered in Detroit and recorded by Motown Records.)

Granted, Detroit faces some massive challenges, but as Michael Sachs of the Bayit synagogue says, as we move into the new year, let’s talk about what works. We make more of what we focus on.

Rabbi Adam Rubin, of Beth Tikvah Congregation, notes this is a time of spiritual “account-taking” and an opportunity to “return to our best selves.”

If a tourist can find gems in Detroit, surely we can find gems in ourselves and each other. Here’s to a New Year’s resolution to keep focused on the gems.

attention given to negative items rather than positive and we need to change this. We must, as a community, focus our attention on the future years and the community we wish for our children.

You might be wondering how we can do this?

Well, the answer is simple: everyone in the community makes a personal commitment to themselves to encourage good.

Talk to your children about the right things to do (and not to do), but most of all, lead by example. We can learn a lot from each other, so being open to

dialogue, even if it is in opposition to your view and as long as it does not promote hatred, is a key to any community...not just ours.

Donations breed apathy Dear Editor, How do we get more people tuned in to provincial politics? One option: party finance reform. It is not exciting, but hear me out.

Tightening political party financing will help erode a steeping political apathy in British Columbia, first by strengthening the voters’ trust in the political process, and second, by shifting incentives of the political parties to spend less time raising money.

British Columbia’s last 20 years of provincial elections have never surpassed a 60 per cent voter turnout; corporate and union donations are helping fuel this apathy.

For when a voter sees large corporate and union donations pouring into political parties, trust in the political process is eroded. “Big money” denigrates the confidence of the voter who might otherwise be engaged with their representative. The political process becomes viewed as tainted and therefore turns voters off from making their vote. When people feel that their votes and their voices cannot compete with large sums of money, something is wrong.

It is not illogical that political parties, as the governing NDP have done, continue to collect

funds until the taps turn off. The incentive that lies in front of them pushes for pay-toplay events like $500-a-head-dinners. Their operations are setup around the current unlimited donation system.

However, the public must demand a more principled system. We must continue to demand legislation that sets limits on contributions to political parties and political riding associations from individuals, as well as ban donations from unions and corporations.

The public must be adamant that our representatives craft new legislation to shift incentives more towards meeting the needs of constituents rather than focusing time and energy courting those select few with the financial capacity to spend “big money.”

A fairer system is a choice available to our province. The success of a political party should be driven by the quality of their platforms and their responsiveness to voters’ interests, not the size of their war chest.

When money competes with voters’ interests for the attention of our lawmakers, we all lose.

Are your children ‘yours’?

There are several ways a couple can have children, beyond the traditional way. They can adopt a child, they can arrange a surrogate birth, and they can arrange an in-vitro procedure. I am sure that, in the coming years, more procedures will exist.

In an article published this week by a CIBC publication, the incisive writer (Ms. Judith Saxe) writes that, in 2015 in the U.S., almost 73,000 infants were born using reproductive technology. One of the many questions arising from all this is how it affects Estate Planning.

One issue is, of course: are the infants connected to the couple (who are the parents) by blood?

Our Family Law Act, in part three, covers parentage. I expect that in future, as more cases are judicially considered, issues of parentage will become more clear.

For now, however, a couple with children born in such ways will want to take extra care to ensure that their “children” are fully covered in their Estate Planning. Parents may consider using Trusts, or other direct ways to provide for them. The law in Wills Variation in this area continues to evolve.

Politicians represent us Dear Editor, Re: “Brodie should support tunnel commuters,” Letters, Sept. 13.

Keith Munro’s ongoing advocacy for a new bridge continuously fails to provide any meaningful data about why a bridge is such a good idea.

To merely parrot public polls that favour a 10lane bridge that serves a relatively small population (when other options are well-researched) is meaningless and only reinforces the fact that much of the public is ill-informed on the subject and generally selfinterested.

Of course they want a new bridge, whatever the cost and whatever the ecological impact.

That the public is ignorant and prone to knee-jerk

responses is natural. That is why there are politicians who we elect, who (hopefully) inform themselves of the issues beyond echoing public opinion and steer policy and decision-making in the direction of greatest good for the greatest number of people, plants and animals.

The facts put forward by bridge opponents are generally well-researched, coming from many expert and deeply informed points of view, from academics to geologists to independent engineers to professional ecologist to transportation experts.

I applaud our mayor and council for their position of putting the breaks on the reckless plans enacted by the previous provincial government with its lack of

research and concern for the greater good.

The growing absence of (and minimizing of) English on signs has created a feeling of exclusion in many residents of Richmond.

The previous intercultural harmony in this community has been abandoned with the collusion of city hall.

Well, Mr. Brodie, congrats on doing your part for stopping the replacement of the tunnel.

A play to stop play

Seniors perform drama aimed at curbing addiction to gambling Cookie cutter exercise and nutrition plans don’t work for most people. This is something personal trainer Gary Dhillon knows from experience.

Dhillon, owner of U Rise Personal Training in Richmond, developed his own fitness routine through studying and research before opening his studio. He was also certified as a personal trainer by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Now, he and his employees work to create a personalized plan for each client.

“Everything’s done based on that individual, so there’s no generic plan, there’s no 12-week program, those don’t even exist,” he explains. “We create the program for you based on your goals, age, lifestyle, and availability.”

The trainers at U Rise focus on listening to their clients and helping them ease into their routine without straining or injuring themselves.

“You have to start at your own pace. You just can’t dive in. You really need to ease into all of this stuff – then increase difficulty,” he says. “They can’t just jump into this one day and go do a two-hour workout. They won’t be able to move the next day, they’re going to be so sore, and they’re going to hurt themselves.”

The other major focus is food, even over exercise, according to Dhillon.

“You can work out seven days a week, it doesn’t

matter. The food is the most important part,” he says, adding if a client is only going to stick with one thing, he’d rather they follow their food plan than come to the studio three times a week.

It’s best that clients incorporate healthy eating into their lifestyle, Dhillon says, instead of going the diet route, which isn’t sustainable.

Dhillon and his staff warn their clients against under-eating, since cutting too many calories can badly affect their metabolism.

Calorie cutting is when a person is eating healthy but not eating enough throughout the day. For example, only eating one or two meals a day.

“Even though they’re eating healthy, they’re actually gaining weight,” Dhillon explains.

Whatever challenges clients face in meeting their goals, Dhillon and his team work with them to overcome them in a private, welcoming setting at the studio.

“People feel really comfortable here because there’s no one watching them, no one judging them,” Dhillon says. “This is about them. Everything is made for them, designed for them.”

very Friday afternoon, retired Richmond resident Theresa Chan goes to the City Centre Community Centre to practise drama.

For the past five years, this has been her weekly routine.

However, Chan is not a professional actor, and neither are her 17 colleagues, who’re also retired.

They’re volunteers, here to perform in plays that address one theme and one theme only: Gambling.

“We came up with the idea five years ago to deliver meaningful messages to the public, especially seniors, through drama,” said Phyllis Chan, community engagement provider and Chinese specialist at the B.C. Responsible & Problem Gambling Program

“We found that seniors often have a shorter attention span, so traditional methods like lectures are not very effective on them,” she said.

The program then developed a few story lines, recruited a group of senior volunteer “actors,” including a former movie actor from Hong Kong, and started “touring” in Richmond and other areas in B.C. “It’s really popular, and the audiences love it,” Chan said. “We now perform at least once a week.

“The volunteers enjoy it, too. Most of them had no experience on the stage but are now pros and very confident in performing.”

Two scripts are being performed by the group right now; one is called “Problem Gambler in Wonderland” and another one is “Believe it or not.”

ince moving recently to Richmond from the United States, my wife Judith and I have noticed the famous Canadian habit of apologizing.

Indeed, a friend of mine who was born and raised in Vancouver advised me (facetiously…I think) before moving: “Just begin each conversation with an apology, and you’ll be fine.”

Given the time of year on the Jewish calendar, I’ve been thinking quite a bit about seeking forgiveness.

As we prepare for the holiest period of the year, the Ten Days of Awe, beginning with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and culminating with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, many Jews are engaged in a process of intensive introspection and spiritual “account-taking.”

This is a period in which we seek forgiveness from those we’ve hurt, strive to change those aspects of ourselves that cause pain to others, and pray to God to help us in the process of teshuvah, a Hebrew word meaning “repentance” but perhaps best understood as a return to our best selves, to restored relationships with others, and to God. At the center of this process is the apology. Some apologies are easy, such as the non-apology apology (beloved by politicians and famous athletes): “I’m sorry if anyone was offended.”

At the next level is the “sorry about that” one might say after accidentally bumping into a stranger in a crowded airport, a wellmeaning effort at basic politeness more than genuine expression of remorse.

The most authentic and heartfelt form of apology is the one uttered to a par-

ent, spouse, friend, or daughter/son for a lifetime of emotional wounds, for a pattern of behavior that rears its ugly head despite our best intentions.

It is grounded in a profound sense of regret, and in some cases requires a great deal of effort, even courage, to express.

Do we have the capacity for healing and forgiveness?

As difficult as it is, the Jewish tradition insists that finding a way to forgive those who have hurt us is within our grasp.

The Talmud teaches: “All who are willing to overlook [other’s insult], that person’s sins are overlooked.”

The great French medieval sage Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki adds that one who gives another the benefit of the doubt “brings peace to them both.

By saying ‘he meant well’ or ‘she did not mean to injure me,’ there is peace between them.”

Note that these teachings do not mention that an apology must precede forgiveness.

Instead, we are urged to find the capacity to let the hurt feelings that have accumulated over the past year go before any apology is forthcoming.

We must prepare the soil before mercy and compassion can grow and flourish.

May this season of repentance bring us closer to a time when God “will turn the hearts of parents to their children, and the hearts of children to their parents…”

(Malachi 4:6). L’shanah tovah u-metukah – warm wishes for a sweet new year of forgiveness and renewal!

$1M invested in clean tech facility Daisy Xiong

A

new, cutting-edge facility to test carbon capture and conversion technologies has opened in Richmond.

Joe Peschisolido, MP for Steveston – Richmond East, announced a $950,000 federal investment for the Carbon Capture and Conversion Institute (CCCI) Thursday morning.

“This is part of the federal government’s funding to fight climate change and to transition into a sustainable, clean-tech economy,” said Peschisolido from the facility on Mitchell Island.

This grant came after the B.C. government contributed $100,000 to the facility in January through its Innovative Clean Energy Fund.

Goran Vlajnic, executive director of CCCI, said he is thrilled for the support from governments to fight carbon dioxide, which takes up 46 per cent of emissions in B.C. “The idea and focus is to develop technologies that capture the carbon dioxide from different industrial sources like cement, in

a more energy-efficient and cost-effective way,” said Vlajnic.

While there are currently technologies available for capturing carbon, they are cost prohibitive, in part because of large energy requirements.

“We are also testing technologies to store the collected carbon dioxide or convert it into something valuable, like chemicals or pesticides,” said Vlajnic.

He adds that some creative technology can even turn the emissions into toothpaste or mattress foam.

“Climate change is real, we need to fight that, but we need to do it in the way that maintains the economy and our quality of life,” said Vlajnic.

He noted that technological development will take years. But, if it’s successful, the technologies will be applied universally in the industry and benefit the whole of society.

The federal government announced $200 million over four years to fight climate change and to transition towards a sustainable clean-tech economy in its 2017 budget.

Public asked to help find teen T

he Richmond RCMP is seeking the public’s assistance in locating 17-yearold Linhai Yu, who was last seen on Sept. 11.

Yu is described as an Asian male, 5’11” and approximately 175 lbs. He was last seen wearing a black hoody with stripes, black pants and black ankle-high boots. Yu wears glasses.

Since his disappearance, Richmond RCMP have pursued a number of investigative avenues in an effort to locate him. Unfortunately, he remains missing.

City Board Proposed Airport Zoning Regulations The Vancouver International Airport 2027 Master Plan includes a proposed new third (South) runway. While the proposed runway may not be constructed for quite some time, the Vancouver Airport Authority has notified the City of Richmond that the Vancouver Airport Authority has made an application to Transport Canada to adopt new Airport Zoning Regulations to protect the airspace for the potential future runway, which would include changes to permitted building heights and result in future noise impacts during operation. The Vancouver Airport Authority made its application on its own without any prior public consultation and without addressing any of the concerns expressed by the City.

Richmond City Council is opposed to the application as currently proposed by the Vancouver Airport Authority. City Council is committed to protecting the needs and interests of our community and ensuring that the public is adequately consulted about any changes to the Airport Zoning Regulations that may impact property within the City and create noise and safety issues.

A

fundraising campaign called “Start Me Up” will be launched this weekend to help more Richmond students access free breakfast at school.

From Sept. 15 to 17, two COBS bakery stores in Richmond will donate one dollar for each loaf sold to the Breakfast Club of Canada, a non-profit organization serving thousands of children breakfast.

“One in five children in Canada go to school on an empty stomach each day,” said Ryan Baker, programs coordinator and analyst at Breakfast Club of Canada.

“We hope this campaign will push more people to know that (child hunger) is a national problem and there are kids going to school hungry.”

Currently, more than 50 students at four Richmond outreach schools are enjoying a free, daily breakfast funded by the club.

“We have staff preparing

food like muffin, scrambled eggs, fruits to students every morning,” said Ruth Quirk, a youth worker at Horizons School.

“Students have better temperament when they have a full stomach. It’s also a good time for them to socialize and form a family atmosphere.”

Two more similar Richmond schools, with a total of 125 students, are currently on the waiting list of the breakfast program, according to Baker.

The two bakeries aim to raise at least $2,000 this year, which gives 10 students breakfast for a year.

One thousand dollars has already been received through in-store donations.

“We tell our customers one dollar can give a child breakfast for a day, $5 for a week and $20 for a month,” said Michael Wong, manager of Richmond Centre COBS Bread.

The two branches also give bread to Cook and General Currie elementaries for student breakfasts.

eighbourhoods once designed to raise families may soon lay in waste as Richmond’s school-age children continue to shift to the city’s centre and the outer suburbs of the Lower Mainland and beyond.

Following a regional analysis of elementary school children enrolled in the public education system, urban planner and director of Simon Fraser University’s City Program Andy Yan says residents and public officials should be concerned about a paradigm shift in the city’s livability.

“Wow, what is happening to Richmond?” was the first thing that came to mind, he said, when he saw Richmond had lost 401 such students — a 3.5 per cent decline — over the past five years. Vancouver was the only other school district that saw a decline (0.4 per cent) while the likes of Langley and Surrey saw big boosts, at 10.9 and eight per cent. Overall, the region’s elementary school population grew by 4.4 per cent.

Yan suggests the city, particularly in the west and south neighbourhoods, is losing (or has lost) its status as a family-friendly place.

This is antithetical to the built form of neighbourhoods, he said.

“The suburbs were where you go to breed.

You have a family of kids and that’s the lifecycle. That’s the traditional view of urban growth,” said Yan. When farmland was subdivided in the ‘60s, Richmond was built for families, he noted.

“The public elementary school was to be one of the keystones in neighbourhoods.

Municipalities have taken that as a planning principle — the importance of having an elementary school you can walk to,” he said.

Yan notes other demographics are at play, such as couples not having as many children as they used to and incomes stagnating.

But Yan points his finger squarely at one major underlying factor: the cost of housing.

terms of residential units. You need to support those residential units,” said Yan. Two new, central elementary schools are required and nearby schools require expansions. Meanwhile, the district has put a school closure process, for schools outside the centre, on the back burner.

Sargent and McPhail both suggest looking at new housing options such as coach houses, secondary suites and developing arterial roads for multi-family units.

“I think we’ll always have single-family neighbourhoods. That would be my hope,” said McPhail.

But she acknowledges solutions such as small lot subdivisions (turning one home into two or three narrow ones) are not likely to solve anything under the present market conditions.

“A few years ago, we looked at small houses on Moncton (Street). At the time, we were thinking they’d sell for $800,000 to 900,000. Now they’re selling for $1.5 million.

It’s frightening when you see that,” she said.

Like so many other boomers, McPhail, Sargent and Hamaguchi are empty nesters with adult children.

Yan said empty nesters are one factor that is making family-friendly housing unavailable. Another factor is speculation, and in Richmond there are just over 4,000 empty housing units.

Yan’s past data analyses have shown the region’s housing has become highly sought after by global speculators, particularly from China. On a per capita basis, Richmond is the region’s primary target for foreign money entering housing and shutting out local income earners hoping to enter the market.

Yan says building family-friendly housing is necessary but he also suggests housing demand needs to be addressed if Richmond iis going to curb its livability problems.

“How do you influence global capital?”

“Who you are trying to house and who you aare trying to nurture?”

“Who are you building for?”

“What happens when many of these units aare up for speculation?”

Yan suggests the time is nigh to implement public policy that commits to family-oriented housing.

McPhail said the city is looking at incentives to build rental housing and also increase the number of two- and three-bedroom units.

“What we try to do is tailor our stores for the community we are in. We don’t want to build cookie-cutter stores,” said Jones.

Pitcairn said he hopes to learn more about the Overwaitea model.

Jones’ company plans to open a small Saveon-Foods in Steveston in about two years time.

“What I can tell you is we’ll do our best to match the folks in the Steveston community,” said Jones.

Increasingly, Steveston is seeing more and more condos and townhouses built to accommodate growth.

Illich is a major player in the B.C. development world and he got his start in Richmond, as his father Milan Illich was a key homebuilder for Richmond’s growing subdivisions decades ago. The Illiches were also the driving development force behind the city’s last true subdivision, Terra Nova.

In Richmond, the City Centre is densifying thanks to builders such as Townline. Illich said his goal is to maintain a livable environment for new residents.

“I feel strongly about providing value in amenities and making sure we do the best possible job in providing livable spaces as opposed to just a box with no foresight,” said Illich.

Illich said failures are often easier to reflect on.

“I’d say my best attribute is facing my failures,” said Illich.

Richmond and Delta area employers expect a hopeful hiring climate for the fourth quarter of 2017, according to the latest ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey.

“Survey data reveals that 17 per cent of employers plan to hire for the upcoming quarter (October to December), while three per cent anticipate cutbacks,” stated Richard Plumb of Manpower’s Vancouver office. Another 73 per cent of employers plan to maintain their current staffing levels in the upcoming quarter, while the remaining seven per cent are unsure of their hiring intentions.

Lemonade stand raises $15,000

osting a lemonade stand for just two hours in the pouring rain in the middle of rural Richmond is hardly a recipe for a successful business venture.

Suffice to say, Kelly and Kyle May were stunned, to say the least, when they realized Saturday’s event – in honour of their four-year-old daughter Morgan – had raised more than $15,000 and still counting for BC Children’s Hospital.

The family was ably assisted by a small army of family members and friends who “staffed” Morgan’s Lemonade Stand to collect funds for the hospital, which is caring for Morgan during her fight against leukemia.

And they all sported “Unicorn Squad” T-shirts; a nod to when Morgan was in hospital and she, by chance, received an unusual number of unicorn-themed cards and presents.

“We wanted to teach our children about giving back and show BC Children’s Hospital how much we appreciate them.

We also wanted to come together as a community,” said mom-of-three Kelly May of the event which was held at the May family’s Fowl Farmer, near their home at No. 7 and Cambie roads.

“BC Children’s is the most amazing hospital in the world.

We’ve raised more than $15,000 already and we’re still waiting on some pledges to come in.”

How did they get so much from a two-hour lemonade stand?

“Eh, I think there were a few company cheques in the pot,” laughed May. “I think there were a lot of people out there that wanted to help us but just didn’t know how to.”

Morgan was diagnosed with leukemia just after her fourth birthday in April and is now in the fifth month of a two-yearlong chemotherapy treatment.

“Right now, she’s entering the really hard phase and is starting to get frail and lose her hair,” said her mom, adding that Morgan will keep attending her Noah’s Ark pre-school class for another week before taking a break until at least January.

“Between now and January will be a tough time for her.

She’s about as aware of (the leukemia) as a four-year-old can be I guess. She knows she has cancer and it’s more than the common cold.”

T

he hockey world can be small even at the elite level. Just ask Troy Stecher.

It was back in the spring of 2009 when Stecher first met Travis Green.

He had just wrapped up a successful season with the Richmond Blues and two months later was selected in the seventh round of the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft by the Portland Winterhawks.

Green had recently joined the Portland staff as an assistant GM and coach after a long pro career that included 16 years in the NHL. The encounter proved to be brief as Stecher opted to go a different path and signed with the B.C. Hockey League’s Penticton Vees.

Now fast forward to last October when Stetcher enjoyed an impressive first training camp with the Vancouver Canucks and was assigned to their American Hockey League farm team in Utica that happened to be coached by Green.

The stint lasted just four games before Stetcher was re-called to the Canucks where he went on to play 71 games. Green was eventually rewarded for his work too when the Canucks made him their 19th head coach in club history back in April.

Now the pair are reunited this week at Rogers Arena where the Canucks opened their main training camp.

“I’ve known him for a while now but never got to play for him very long,” said Stecher. “He is a really dedicated coach who is super focused and hungry to win. The other side is he was a (NHL) player too. He gets it. He knows what you are going through. He knows the schedule and the outside distractions. I think he is someone who is going to be able to relate to us really well.”

Although the Canucks limped to a 30-43-9 record last season which resulted in a coaching change, Stecher’s play was considered one of the few bright spots.

It didn’t take him long to become a fan favourite, establishing himself at the Young Stars Classic Tournament in Penticton, then continuing the momentum at the Canucks’ main camp.

He headed to Utica for what figured to be a year of seasoning but two weeks later was back in Vancouver where he established himself as a mainstay on the blueline. He finished his rookie campaign with 24 points including three goals.

Stecher returns for his sophomore NHL season with more confidence but is taking nothing for granted at

the same time.

“It’s kind of a different scenario this year but at the end of the day it’s the same mindset,” he said. “I need to make sure I deserve to be here and prove to a lot of people that I put in my time this summer. I haven’t got complacent. I’m still trying to improve and be a solution to this team and help us win.” Stecher says his off-season workouts have better prepared him for the grind of an 82game schedule.

He had never played more than 43 in a season during his time in North Dakota. Yet, it wasn’t about adding weight to his 5-foot-10 frame as quickness is such a big part of his game. His skating sessions included the familiar surroundings of the

Richmond Ice Centre under Derek Popke.

“Coming from college we didn’t play as many games so last year that definitely was an adjustment later on in the season just feeling fatigued,” he added.

“For me it wasn’t about getting bigger. I think speed and quickness are two of my strengths and I didn’t want to take away from that.

Definitely wanted to get stronger but didn’t want to add too much mass.

I had to find that balance. It was a good summer. I had a lot of good people in place who were leading me in the right direction.”

The Canucks open their preseason schedule Saturday when the Edmonton Oilers visit Rogers Arena.

late rally fell just short for the Hugh Boyd Trojans as they kicked off the 2017 B.C. High School Football season with a 15-13 loss to the visiting Handsworth Royals.

On an ideal late summer night at Boyd Field, the Royals relied on a productive passing game to build up a 15-0 lead. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter when the Trojans made things interesting.

Senior tailback Reace Mok scored on a short run for his team’s first major of the season. The Boyd defence then came up

with a big turnover for another touchdown as a blitzing Tomo Takeuchi stripped the ball from Handsworth quarterback Tate Williams.

The senior linebacker raced 40-yards to the end zone.

The match-up was between schools that play at the AAA (Handsworth) and AA (Boyd) levels.

The Trojans will conclude their pre-season schedule with a pair of games in their own tier including a tilt in Abbotsford this afternoon against Robert Bateman.

6. It is fun! This is some of the best parts of the kids’ days, Wood said. Seeing a project through from start to finish instill a sense of accomplishment, but most importantly the learning should be fun.

Jordan and Burns will hit the pitch in Caps charity match A

couple of well-known Richmond soccer standouts will be participating in Saturday’s Whitecaps FC Charity Alumni Match at B.C. Place Stadium.

Jason Jordan and Stephen Burns are among the former Vancouver Whitecaps/86ers named to participate in the game.

As part of this year’s Legends andStars theme, alumni from all eras of the club’s 40-plus year history will be joined by a number of special celebrity guests, including Colin O’Donoghue (Captain Hook/Once Upon A Time) and KJ Apa (Archie Andrews/Riverdale). All proceeds from the match go to B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Jordan starred for the 86ers/Whitecaps during their days in the First Division of the United Soccer Leagues. The Richmond F.C. product is the club’s third all-time leading scorer with 74 goals in 207 games. The 39-year-old is currently technical director for Fusion F.C. of the B.C. Premier Soccer League.

Burns played professionally for the 86ers and Winnipeg Fury after graduating from UBC. The longtime teacher at South Delta Secondary School in Tsawwassen has been coaching soccer in his hometown for years at the youth, senior and high school levels. Recent stints include Richmond F.C. of the Metro Women’s Soccer League premier division and the McMath Wildcats senior girls team. He is also an assistant coach with the Langara Falcons women’s team.

Other former Whitecaps/86ers slated to participate include Jay DeMerit, Paul Dolan, John Catliff and Robert Earnshaw.

The game kicks off at 1:45 p.m. ahead of Vancouver’s MLS match against the Columbus Crew (4 p.m.). To purchase a $5 ticket for the alumni match, fans must also have a ticket for the MLS game. Tickets for both matches can be purchased through Ticketmaster.
