So, after years of stamping its feet, waving its arms around and being snubbed at BC Liberal government photo opps, Richmond city council finally got its way with the suspension of the Massey Tunnel Replacement Project.

Mayor Brodie et al will no doubt have been waking up with a wry smile today after the new “GreeNDP” government on Wednesday halted all preparatory work on the $3.5 billion project and announced there will be an independent, technical review of the controversial crossing.

But before we all sit back in our armchairs and puff our cigars in the direction of Delta mayor Lois Jackson, let us not forget that something dramatic still needs to change.

I don’t think anyone, including our city council, is under any illusion that the existing tunnel can cope with the current or future forecasted flow of traffic.

Having commuted through said tube in and out of Richmond for the last nine years, I know firsthand the pain inflicted if a car so much as gets a flat anywhere near the Fraser River crossings. The entire grid falls to pieces.

A twin of the current tunnel seems to be the option preferred by most who protested vehemently against the construction of a massive, 10-lane toll bridge connecting Delta and Richmond.

Proponents of a second tunnel claim that option, although almost as expensive as the bridge, would be less intrusive on surrounding farmland and, indeed, the sensitive Fraser River estuary itself.

But, no matter what is eventually decided (hopefully by the spring), I firmly believe, as Mayor Brodie has indicated, that we’re simply setting ourselves up for another major traffic headache, in the shape of the rickety, four-lane Oak Street Bridge.

If the plan at the Massey crossing is to ease congestion and facilitate the flow of more traffic on Highway 99, then it’s common sense that more traffic is going to want to cross the Oak Street Bridge. No? A government-led study, during the much-maligned “consultation” phase of the now-suspended project, claimed the majority of traffic flowing north through the tunnel exits the highway in Richmond.

Some people had a problem with that assertion, including myself, who witnesses every morning large volumes of traffic continuing north on the 99 towards the Oak Street Bridge.

So, whatever happens at the Massey Tunnel, they really need to start factoring in the cost of a new crossing at the Oak Street Bridge as well, otherwise it’ll be déjà vu all over again (sic).

And unless they figure out a way to change people’s commuting habits and get more cars off the road — via light rail, for example — we will keep running into these major roadblocks time and time again, for generations to come.

Footnote: Given the conspiracy theory that the Port of Vancouver was actually the driving force behind the tunnel replacement project — so as to facilitate deeper dredging and bigger tankers up the river — it’ll be interesting to see what role the port plays over the next few months…

Dear Editor, Re: “Someone could die here: Pedestrian,” News, Sept. 6.

The story struck a chord with me. I agree wholeheartedly that something has to be done to ensure the safety of pedestrians at crosswalks all over Richmond before more people do die.

For some time now, my wife and I have witnessed so many dangerous situations at crosswalks.

Some crosswalks have yellow blinking lights when a button is pressed, others do not.

In either case, we have seen reckless drivers ignore or fail to see pedestrians who have already started crossing the street.

We have seen other drivers try to zip around cars who have already stopped for pedes-

trians. I recall a near tragic incident several months ago at a crosswalk on No. 3 Road.

I was driving on the outside (curb) lane approaching a crosswalk. I stopped when I saw an elderly woman with a dog waiting to cross.

The woman waved at me and started to cross. Her eyes were on her dog in front of her. When they were right in front of my car, I noticed in my side mirror that a car in the next (outside) lane was approaching fast and it didn’t look like it was going to stop.

I leaned on my horn and the pedestrian, startled, stopped.

The car screeched to a stop, and I yelled “What the hell are you doing?!” to the young male driver. I was shaken by the fact that I could have witnessed a deadly accident.

I believe that serious accidents can be avoided if all crosswalks had lights that turn red when pressed.

The ones that simply blink yellow are ineffective. They are either not seen because of their location at each end of the crosswalk, or they are ignored by drivers. There also needs to be stricter enforcement and stiffer penalties for irresponsible drivers who ignore the lights at crosswalks.

I hope the city will take note of the dangers at our crosswalks and take appropriate action before someone else does get killed at one.

Women’s estate planning in the New York Times

A couple of weeks ago, after seeing the story in Forbes magazine, I wrote about the unique circumstances of women over the age of 50 when it comes to estate planning. This past Sunday, a headline in the New York Times read, “Over 50, and Facing Financial Fears.” It’s clear to me, then, that this issue must be an important one in the U.S., and should also be in Canada.

One of the women profiled, at age 55, had to take over her husband’s business after he died (age 58) at a New Years’ Eve party. She knew nothing about the business, or her late husband’s Will. A friend of hers, who ran a public-relations firm, disclosed several similar horror stories from women across the U.S.

The first point is that women tend to live longer than men. They should therefore do some planning, which includes knowing their spouse’s Will and what assets they have (which is especially important in a subsequent relationship).

Kindness of a stranger Dear Editor, A heartfelt thank you to the complete stranger who rescued me and my road bike, Monday Aug. 28.

During a long ride in Vancouver I ended up with a flat tire, and unable to change the tube.

I then began the uncomfortable walk home to Steveston.

On Russ Baker Way, after trudging along for at least an hour, “Ken” pulled off the road, and offered me a lift.

Before I could tell him I didn’t want to put him out of his way, he explained he was a

fellow Richmondite and, just the day before, had completed the two-day Ride to Conquer Cancer, with a combined total for the event raising more than $8 million.

Being surrounded by 2,000 passionate cyclists, and aware of all types of issues that can happen on long rides, he said he had to stop and offer help. Thank you, Ken! I am so grateful and continuously amazed at the generosity and kindness of the cycling community.

Road test rudeness Dear Editor, Re: “Road to drivers’ licence a bumpy one,” Driving Miss Daisy column, Sept. 1.

I read with interest your article about trying to pass your driver’s test. My son passed after his second try, but the examiner found the opposite problem with my son; he thought he was too cautious.

I almost filed a complaint about this examiner, as after the test he did not walk back into the office with my son, but left him outside on his own rolling up the car windows.

He came into the mall muttering “he’s lucky he passed, he’s a terrible driver,” which he also conveyed to my son.

Apparently, the problem was he was too slow turning right or left, waiting to make sure he wouldn’t get hit.

The examiner couldn’t fail him, as he did

nothing wrong; he was just being more cautious than the examiner thought was “normal.”

The main problem I had with this examiner was his attitude. Can you imagine the lack of confidence he was instilling in my son by saying he was a terrible driver to his face?

Yes, this was his last appointment on a Friday afternoon, but that is really no defence for what he said to a young new driver.

I have been a passenger in my son’s car and I have never feared for my life.

I shake my head when I see all the kids driving around the city like maniacs. I often wonder how they passed their driving test.

To Daisy Xiong: I hope you take the lessons you’ve learned and try again.

ichmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie said Wednesday he was pleased to hear the provincial government has put the brakes on construction of a 10-lane bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel.

“The current government appears to be listening to our concerns that we’ve been expressing over and over for the last four to five years,” said Brodie.

On Wednesday, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claire Trevena said the NDP government will instead be proceeding with an independent, technical review of the Highway 99 crossing.

“We’re trying to get the social licence from the Metro Vancouver communities,” said Trevena, noting all but one regional mayor (Delta) opposed the bridge largely on grounds that it ran contrary to regional mass transit plans.

“We got the sense there was not a thorough business case, a thorough look at all the options,” she told media.

The Ministry of Transportation said the review will include input from mayors — an election promise by the NDP — and “will fo-

cus on what level of improvement is needed in the context of regional and provincial planning, growth and vision, as well as which option would be best for the corridor, be it the proposed 10-lane bridge, a smaller bridge or tunnel.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry will cancel existing groundwork being conducted on Highway 99, which has already tallied $66 million.

However, the Ministry noted work completed to date, including groundwork to widen the highway north and south of the tunnel, is expected to be utilized regardless of which option is ultimately chosen.

Brodie said he wants the Ministry to consider a twinned tunnel (eight lanes), which is estimated to cost nearly as much as the $3.5

billion mega bridge, but still leaves hundreds of millions of dollars for public transportation.

Considering cost is no longer a significant difference between a twinned tunnel and bridge, Brodie said the remaining advantages of a twinned tunnel are that it would continue to be an impediment to future port development/dredging up the Fraser River by restricting deep haul ships and that there is no visual impact to the community.

Furthermore, a scaled back eight-lane crossing would not leave such an imposing interchange at Steveston Highway nor would it eat into a public park nearby.

Both proposals do still leave a bottleneck at the Oak Street Bridge and they do not include immediate light rail plans.

Furthermore, loss of farmland and urban sprawl — a concern of many Richmond councillors — on either side of the Fraser would be exacerbated by either option, conceded Brodie.

It is unclear if Trevena plans to be more forceful and forthcoming than her Liberal predecessor with light rail plans along the corridor.

Coun. Ken Johnston was one of two councillors to originally vote at council in favour of the bridge, but said on Wednesday he welcomed the review, unlike Coun. Alexa Loo. Former Liberal MLA Johnston, however, is concerned about the timeline and further delays and also said the initial consultation process was flawed.

He said light rail is a “more sensible solution” over the next 10-20 years and “should have been addressed initially.”

Meanwhile, Rieghardt van Enter, the B.C. Regional Director for the Progressive Contractors Association of Canada, expressed “disappointment” that the project was cancelled.

“Most companies in the procurement process have been on this for several years,” he said, noting upwards of 2,000 jobs are now delayed.

Trevena hopes the review will be complete by next spring. But then further planning must be done, she noted.

Trevena said two final bidding contractors will be paid up to $2 million to help offset their expenses to date.

Gang hangouts targeted by RCMP Alan Campbell

ichmond RCMP officers from the Organized Crime Unit claim they will be partnering with general duty Mounties to conduct proactive gang patrols throughout the city.

The patrols, say police, will be focussed on potential areas being frequented in Richmond by gang members.

The initiative is aimed at deterring gangs from using Richmond as a “hangout” or “place to do business.”

As part of the initiative, Richmond RCMP said it will be conducting outreach at locations where the suspected gangsters may be frequenting.

Part of the outreach will include partnering with businesses to assist in deterring gang members and their associates from using Richmond establishments.

“We recognize that no municipality, including Richmond, is immune from the impact of gangs and organized crime,” said Supt. Will Ng. “As such, we are implementing measures that actively target those individuals associated to these gangs.

“These gang members and their associates show zero regard for the safety of our good citizens.

“As police, our first priority is public safety.

To assist in protecting the citizens of Richmond, we will be targeting the local hangouts of gang members and their associates.”

While injuries to innocent bystanders are, say police, a rare occurrence in Richmond, the RCMP recognizes the potential risk gang members and their associates pose to the public when disputes erupt.

As such, the initiative has been put in place by the RCMP as a “proactive, preventative measure aimed at increasing overall public safety and disrupting the day-to-day movements of gang members and their associates.”

ity councillors have agreed to spend $50,000 to study the possibility of running the historic Steveston Interurban Tram from its barn on Moncton Street and No. 1 Road to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.

City planners will now investigate the feasibility of the tram running on one of two routes to the cannery: either along No.1 Road to Bayview Street, or more directly along Moncton Street.

The study will include a business case analysis, transportation and engineering analysis of the scope and costs to retrofit the tram to be operational, and the capital and operating costs required for the tram itself.

It’s not the first time the city has considered running the tram through Steveston.

Between 2002 and 2005, city council mulled several route options in the village and costs were estimated.

A tram route from Britannia Shipyards to Moncton and No. 1 Road was estimated from $1.9 million to $2 million in 2004, and $2.9 million from the London Farm area to Britannia Shipyards.

The new study will also investigate traffic control, alteration of the roadways to permit laying of track, cost

of laying the track, safety features of crossings and provision of stations.

In 2005, city council passed a resolution “that Council abandon any tram routing options in Steveston.”

Today, the tram is being restored and is on display in Steveston Park as a historical artefact in the city’s collection.

Bought in 1913, Tram 1220 was transferred to the Steveston Interurban Restoration Society from the Royal BC Museum in 1993.

A

new policy encouraging the use of English language on all regulated signage has been tentatively approved by city councillors.

As part of the sign permit process, city staff have been consulting with business owners to encourage the inclusion of at least 50 per cent English on all signs since October 2014.

The approval of the new policy at Tuesday’s city council’s general purposes committee simply puts in writing the work already being carried out by staff.

According to the new policy, “the city will take a proactive educational approach to encourage the inclusion of wording that is at least 50 per cent in the English language in all types of signage regulated by the City of Richmond.

“The city supports the intercultural vision to be ‘the most welcoming, inclusive and harmonious community in the country,” noted a city staff report presented to committee.

Although there has never been a bylaw requirement or written policy related to the use of language on signage, the education approach has led to 100 per cent compliance for business signage in Richmond, according to the report.

In the first half of 2017, the city received 306 sign complaints, compared to 178 for the whole of 2016 and 110 throughout 2015.

The largest increase in complaints has been related to real estate signs and signs on city property, according to staff.

However, while continuing to receive inquiries and complaints related to signs, “the types of inquiries are changing from predominately language-related to ‘nuisance’ related,” stated the report.

Sign permit applications in the city have been increasing since 2015. Historically, the city receives about 300 sign permit applications per year.

In 2016, a total of 468 applications were received. In the first half of this year, 325 have been received.

In June, city council came close to mandating 50 per cent English on all regulated business signs in Richmond.

However, after several hours of heated debate, the majority of councillors, not for the first time, backed off the controversial move.

Council is expected to approve the policy at its next meeting on Monday at city hall.

Driving levy nears as tolls eliminated Graeme Wood

ichmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie believes the recent elimination of bridge tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges will soon nudge the region into a mobility pricing system, whereby drivers are charged based on how much they use the roads.

“I agree with the concept of mobility pricing. It’s far more fair than bridge tolling,” said Brodie.

According to TransLink, which set up the Mobility Pricing Independent

Commission this summer, mobility pricing uses a suite of fees — such as transit fares, tolls, fuel taxes, road use charges and related fees for moving people and goods (car sharing) — to curtail traffic, particularly single-occupant vehicle traffic.

Brodie said only using bridge tolls will not work for Richmond residents as they are locked in on an island.

He also said residents on the North Shore and in Delta will also likely oppose that avenue. Instead, Brodie foresees charges such as a per-kilometre fee and/ or rush hour premium fees.

The commission will put forth recommendations to the Metro Vancouver Mayors’ Council (which oversees TransLink’s board of directors) by next spring.

“Some concepts will be straight forward; some will be highly contentious,” added Brodie.

“The whole issue is going to be very complicated, but it can and will be done.”

The commission claims to be engaging the public in the process.

I guess you could say I was a tad emotional.”

Veteran farmer Bill Zylmans admitted faltering for a few seconds when he received news that the City of Richmond is going to honour his late father, William (AKA Wim), and his family by naming a new street after him.

“All of his history sort of flashed across my mind and I wondered, what would he have thought?” said Zylmans, while standing on a dirt road out the back of his W & A Farms on Westminster Highway near No. 8 Road.

“If he drove up and saw a road named after him, he would have been like ‘What am I? Where did this come from? Really? Am I that important?

“That’s not what he was in this for though.

He was passionate, committed, he wanted to make a difference.

“Suffice to say, we’re tickled pink.”

Adriana said her father was very active in many local and regional farming associations and had “a very strong work ethic; he always wanted others to become good contributors to society.”

As well as the upcoming road-naming, Wim Zylmans’ name has been living on since 2005 in the shape of a farming scholarship, which is administered through the Vancouver Foundation.

It is not hard to see that we have many trees under drought stress right now.

Dry soil conditions can significantly reduce the life span of your valuable landscape trees.

We all know how expensive and difficult it is to replace your trees. You need to pay special attention during these hot, dry days of summer.

Some indications of a serious problem with your trees may be signs of wilting leaves, loss of needles, yellowing of leaves, premature autumn colour, early leaf drop and sappy spots on branches.

Most of a tree’s roots are within the top 12 inches of soil. Trees need slow, deep

watering every five to seven days during drought periods. Remember, a tree’s root zone may extend well beyond the tree canopy.

A great way to water is to put a sprinkler under the tree. Place a coffee can close by and run the sprinkler slowly until two inches of water has been collected.

The best time to water is in the morning. Be sure to follow your watering restrictions.

A couple of inches of organic mulch, such as wood chips, will help retain moisture.

Make sure to water well before adding the mulch.

During severe drought, limit pruning and fertilizing.

Keep an eye on the trees on boulevards in your neighbourhood. Now that you know the signs of stress, take time to give these thirsty trees a drink at least once a week.

Contact your local arborist to assist you with any serious problems you may have with your trees.

City's breast milk tops B.C.

ichmond’s Milk Bank Depot has been the most successful one in all of Vancouver Coastal Health’s (VCH) milk bank network in B.C. after one year of operation.

Launched in August 2016, the depot has received a total of 283.5 kilograms of milk – the equivalent of 71 four-litre milk jugs – from mom donors, according to BC Women’s Provincial Milk Bank.

This marks the highest donation rate of any of the five collection VCH depots located in Vancouver, Squamish and on the North Shore.

“Richmond moms are very generous,” said Frances Jones, coordinator of BC Women’s Provincial Milk Bank.

“The workers in the Richmond depot have done a very good job letting mothers know the importance of the donation,” Jones added.

She said 50 per cent of the milk collected in Richmond — at 8100 Granville Avenue — will be delivered to Richmond Hospital and the rest will be distributed to the babies most in need at neonatal intensive care units across B.C. Health officials believe a combination of factors contribute to the high donation rate of breast milk in Richmond.

ing environment, but donors are also pre-screened, so our reception staff can receive the milk in an easy, smooth transfer,” said Gail Morrow, public health nurse at the Richmond Early Years Program. “(And) we are supporting the moms who donate by replacing their milk collection bags (so they don’t have that additional expense),” said Richmond public health dietitian Anne Swann.

Swann added that the depot did a big promotion last fall, sending out posters

to all the doctors and midwives offices, and also to pharmacies that rent breast pumps.

Workers also provide information to moms through home visits and parent groups to increase awareness of the need for donated breast milk.

Jones said the demand for donated human milk continuously exceeds supply, and they are always looking for healthy mothers who have more breast milk than they need for their own baby to help others.

This year’s goal is to attract over 2,400 walkers and raise at least $460,000 in B.C. iding a bike in Richmond is a “piece of cake” now for long-time Richmond resident Noah Silvera.

“I always cycled around Richmond. I always cycle commuted to work and school. It’s flat, it’s easy,” chuckled Silvera, a 21-yearold software engineering student at University of Victoria.

No doubt, after a twomonth, pan-Canadian cycling trip with girlfriend Saskia Kowallik that saw the two climb a combined 52,520 metres of elevation — equivalent to six Mount Everests.

The July 1 to Sept. 1 trip can be viewed online, at Silvera’s blog (Canada-BikeTrip-Noah-Silvera.Blogspot. ca) where he shares photos and detailed, daily GPS tracking of the trip from the smartphone app Straba.

Silvera, who attended St. Joseph the Worker in his elementary school days, said he and Kowallik decided to cycle across Canada on a whim, as they had two months off.

B.C. I had never seen the Rockies,” said Silvera.

He had done two shorter trips on Vancouver Island before. The couple was assisted along the way by Kowallik’s father, who followed them by car and set up camping spots ahead of their eight-hour cycling days that spanned roughly 140-240 kilometres per day (no weight on their ultra-light bikes).

Silvera said the hardest part of the trip was crossing the Prairies.

“Everyone talks about the physical part of cycling, but

once your legs are moving you forget about your body,” he explained.

“It’s the mental part that’s tough. The Prairies had no mental stimulation. And when the wind comes at you it doesn’t change.”

Highlights included being invited to a family home by strangers to celebrate a French cultural festival in New Brunswick and the “amazing” Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland.

Silvera praised Richmond and Vancouver’s growing cycling network but had less to say about Ontario’s offerings.

“If you teach kids to start looking at the world like that from a young age, you are giving them a real advantage in the future, even if they don’t become an entrepreneur. Taking initiative, finding solutions to problems and learning from your mistakes are crucial to success in any career.”

After looking at the school system, Wood saw how the rapidly changing economy influences what is being taught – and what should be taught – in school. Driven to ensure that the future generations, like those of her daughters aged seven and nine, would be well equipped to enter the workforce by nurturing skills that are associated with entrepreneurship early in life.

A

geism is defined as “prejudice or discrimination on the basis of a person’s age.”

While ageism could also refer to a particular age group such as Millennials, or teens, we typically associate it with the elderly. And elderly, believe it or not, is defined as “being past middle age.” The nerve!

It started the first time someone called me ma’am. I had to turn around to see who they were talking to.

Then I thought, “oh-oh, this is how it starts.” No one has yet to give me their seat on the bus though, unless I’m wearing my enormous knee brace.

When I’m in a restaurant full of younger people, guess who gets the best service? The prettiest, youngest woman.

Is it because she’s beautifully fresh-faced?

Or wearing a skimpy, revealing top? Or because she smiles sweetly at the male server?

Yes. Yes. And yes.

To be clear, she doesn’t even have to smile at the server. When we take my gorgeous, 25-year-old niece out for dinner, we ALWAYS get better service. Case closed.

Sitting alone at a restaurant, however, I am virtually invisible.

I get offered the crappiest seat in the house (by the bathroom or kitchen), and service is usually sluggish. It’s kind of ironic when you think about it.

Because we “elderly” usually have bigger

incomes than a twenty-something, and often tip better. Don’t servers get it?

Actually, the female servers are savvier than the males, especially when I’m with my husband, Harvey.

The assumption is that he’s the one with the money. It almost never fails – the female servers playfully touch Harvey’s shoulder or arm, and give him their brightest smile, in the hope of a bigger tip. Which they usually get.

He likes the female attention, and who can blame him? You can bet he’s not going to yell “sexual harassment!”

If a handsome male server touched my arm or shoulder as he was about to present me with the bill, I too, might be inclined to leave a bigger tip. But that never happens. Why? Because I’m invisible.

Also, because there’s more likelihood a woman would interpret that as sexual harassment.

I also notice how some younger people make a point of talking louder and slower to me, as though, at age 61, I’m both deaf and stupid.

I try not to let it get to me, but it’s hard. Especially having once been young and pretty myself. Believe me, I’m painfully aware that those days are long gone.

So, what’s the best approach to dealing with ageism and invisibility? Humour.

Next time someone overlooks you, just say: “I can’t stand all this attention. Could you please dial it down?”

Works every time.

Colour your streets 25th annual banner contest includes public vote

he annual City of Richmond Street Banner Contest has officially kicked off and the city is now accepting entries.

For the 25th year in a row, artists of all ages and abilities are encouraged to share their vision through a range of artistic mediums.

Contest submissions should reflect one of the following six themes: • Parks and Nature • Active Living • Community Pride • City Centre • Transportation • Arts, Culture and Heritage Submissions (Richmond.ca/Banners) will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 29 at 5 p.m.

Up to 10 winning designs will be chosen this fall and the designs will be turned into 1,000 street banners.

The banners will be installed throughout Richmond’s downtown core, on walking paths and on main gateways leading in and out of the city. The banners will be displayed for one year beginning in February 2018.

New this year, a community volunteer judging panel will select up to 20 designs as semi-finalists and the final judging will come down to a public vote.

All semi-finalist designs will be posted on the city’s Facebook page and website for public voting and the community will be invited to “like” their favourite design.

The city will grant final approval.

Chosen winners will be given a $300 prize.

Italy meets Japan II ERICHANSON Sips Happen

L

ast column, I described the first courses of a wine banquet sponsored by the producers of Prosecco and Valpolicella.

To prove that Italian wines can deliver “outside the box,” the wines were paired with Japanese fusion dishes prepared by chef Oshitaka Miyamoto of Vancouver’s Miku Restaurant.

Our fourth course was Aburi beef carpaccio with AAA sterling silver short rib, baby greens and a garlic jalapeno ponzu.

While carpaccio is Italian, at Miku they add a Japanese element by searing it with the blowtorch used in preparing Aburi sushi. And they accompany it with a ponzu sauce, which is soy, rice vinegar, and yuzu sauce. They kick it up a notch with garlic and jalapeno.

To go with the carpaccio, two 2012 Valpolicellas Superiores were uncorked. Valpolicella is a light, tangy, fruity red wine with aromas of wild berries, dark fruits, and the sour cherry note common in northern Italian reds.

Slightly chilled, they marry well with spicy dishes, especially in summer.

Next, we enjoyed a couple of 2013 Ripassos, an excellent match with the Fraser Valley pork chop and an Asian black vinegar reduction with mushrooms, packed with umami.

Ripassos are made from the same blend of grapes as Valpolicellas, but the grapes are aged in barrels with the lees of premium Amarones. The result is a red that is darker, heavier, and more complex that has the stuff-

ing to go with more flavourful meats.

The final main dish was an AAA sterling silver prime rib, cooked for five hours sous-vide with brown butter wasabi sauce, Miku’s version of horseradish. With such bold savoury flavours, a 2013 and a 2006 Amarone were called into action.

Amarone is one of those wines that turns grapes into raisins and then gold. Although it’s made from the same type of grapes as Valpolicella, the grapes are from older vines and are left on the vines longer resulting in more flavour. Furthermore, the grapes are dried on straw mats for months until they lose half the water content and become raisins.

The raisins are pressed and fermented in casks producing a concentrated red wine.

Expect bold aromas of cherry liqueur, black fig, cinnamon and plum sauce along with hints of green peppercorn, and chocolate.

On the palate, Amarone wines often have medium-plus acidity balanced with high alcohol and flavours of black cherry, brown sugar and chocolate.

As a result of the effort and expense to produce Amarone, prices usually start at $50 and often top $100. And the best vintages can often age and improve over 20 years.

For the finishing touch, we sipped two elegant Prosecco Valdobbiadene drys with vanilla panacotta, accompanied by fruit, and chocolate coconut ice cream. The Proseccos are actually sweet, yet crisp enough to temper the richness of the dessert. An exquisite finale for the ‘Italy meets Japanese fusion.’

She’s a capable maid and cook, and she opens up Emily’s world. Emily often spends her time in the kitchen baking with Ada and observes with awe as Ada falls in love with an attractive young Irishman, Daniel Byrne.

Told in alternating chapters from the perspective of Emily and Ada, Miss Emily surprised me in its ability to pull me in despite its bland cover.

The descriptions of 19th century Amherst, Massachusetts, and Ada’s reflections on Dublin and the Irish countryside evoke the period beautifully.

But the story begins to shift as Ada catches the attention of the gruff Patrick Crohan, a colleague of Daniel’s.

As love between Daniel and Ada grows, Patrick’s behaviour becomes progressively more sinister, foreshadowing a horrifying crime as suspense builds.

Miss Emily is a story of friendship and courage, and is almost entirely about women: their passions and their fears.

And although Emily Dickinson’s poetry is held in high regard, her world is surprisingly small. Reclusive and private, 36-year-old Emily is reluctant to leave her home.

Emily is close to her family: her mother, father and sister Vinnie, whom she still lives with, and her brother Austin who lives next door. Austin’s wife, Sue, is Emily’s best friend (although Emily’s feelings for Sue run far deeper than friendship).

Emily’s entire world is close at hand and she likes it that way.

Howling suspicions keep pages turning HELENVARGA The Book Club

old through the perspective of 14-yearold Linda/Madeline, The History of Wolves by Emily Fridlund is an incredible novel filled with emotion, power and depth exploring Linda’s coming of age in a remote community.

Linda lives in a shack on the edge of a lake in northern Minnesota. The shack is what remains of a commune where Linda spent most of her childhood, until relations among the members became strained and the commune dissolved. Linda and her parents live off the land, away from town, and Linda is often left to her own devices, her parents not asking where she goes or what she gets up to.

Linda is alone, she attends the local school and we learn a bit about her school life, which does not include any close friendships. Her tales of school revolve around her teachers, particularly one teacher who encourages Linda beyond her comfort zone, but disappears later as he is

accused of child pornography.

The greatest focus is Linda’s relationship with the new neighbours across the lake, a young couple with a small child. The father, Leo, is often away and the mother, Patra, hires Linda to watch over her young son, Paul. Linda really enjoys the time spent with this family and loves teaching Paul about nature. However, from the start we get the feeling Paul is not a typical toddler.

The relationship Linda has with Patra’s family is interwoven with stories of her life at school and at home, and show her as an outsider in each, wanting to belong. It is this need to belong that perhaps allows Linda to be unaware of the tragedy happening to Paul. The reader is as unsure as Linda as nothing is told to us outright.

The dreamy, magic realism writing structure gives the story a surreal feel, but at the same time the characters and action compel you to keep reading to see what happens next.

I really enjoyed this story and found it a quick read as I needed to keep reading to find out if my suspicions were correct.

I

t’s been long overlooked as a tourism destination, but Panama City is one of Central America’s most exquisite gems.

With its mixture of ancient history, indigenous culture and tropical jungle, the city’s attractions are diverse and fascinating.

Give yourself at least two days to absorb the thrum of Latin American magic, feel the pulse of the jungle and walk the historic corridors of Casco Viejo. There’s a good chance you’ll be longing for more.

The Panama Canal is the city’s top attraction and the country’s main source of wealth, generating in excess of $2 billion a year.

To understand the relevance and history of this engineering marvel, head to the Miraflores Locks Visitors Center.

Here you’ll learn how the French began work on the project in 1882 and threw up their hands in despair within a few short years, by which time they’d lost 22,000 to malaria and yellow fever.

The US built the canal between 1903 and 1914, reaping the financial benefits for 85 years until control was handed to Panama in 1999. Today, 14,000 ships from 160 countries use this oceanic route, making Panama City the main logistics hub for the continent and the wealthiest city in Central America.

As each one passes through, a whopping

197 million litres of fresh water is released into the ocean.

For one of the best views of the canal, head to Soberania National Park, an hour from the city and home to the Gamboa Rainforest.

We boarded an air tram that lifted us soundlessly into the still, upper canopies of the jungle.

Shaded by the leafy trunks of ancient trees, we passed cone-shaped nests of Aztec ants attached to tree trunks, watched as blue morphin butterflies flitted by and heard the ghostly yowl of howler monkeys.

From the peak of an aerial viewing tower, the 80-kilometre canal spread before us, massive freighters making their eight-hour journey across its passage.

Later, we boarded a boat tour of the Gatun Lake, zooming into some of its narrow channels to watch tamarind monkeys dance between the branches and perfectly camouflaged sloths hang nonchalantly in the trees.

This tropical reserve is super accessible, rich in wildlife and delivers a close-up glimpse at Panama’s resplendent natural wealth.

The Embera Quera, one of Panama’s indigenous groups, is a cultural world away from the smog and traffic of the city’s thoroughfares.

To meet them, we drove a short distance from the city and boarded a dugout canoe on the banks of the Gatun River.

We ventured 25 minutes upstream to the village, which is home to 24 families. They

fish tilapia from the river, grow mango, papaya and plantains in the fertile orange soil and supplement their livelihood with visits by curious travelers.

One of the community’s shamans, Alipio Ajeto, walked us through the jungle, pointing out an indigenous version of Viagra and natural remedies for diabetes and diarrhea.

Beneath the thatch-roofed communal hut we ate a lunch of tilapia and fried plantain, entertained by the antics of Tony, the Embera Quera’s pet toucan.

There’s a stark transition between the new, well-heeled Panama, with its tall, contemporary hotels, casinos and expansive malls, and the old. In Casco Viejo, the old city, we peeked inside Iglesia de San Jose to marvel at a massive altar flaked with gold that stretches

25 feet high. It’s the only thing that was saved in 1671 when the English pirate Henry Morgan ransacked and destroyed the city, burning it to the ground and making off with the loot.

Local legend has it that a Jesuit priest painted the altar black to disguise it, and then told Morgan the original altar had been stolen by a different pirate. Today, supplicants still pray at the altar, four centuries after it was built.

wenty-three-year-old Tara Bosch has built up a candy empire within a single year. Her goal? To offer a healthy alternative to traditional sugar-filled candy.

Next month, the Millennial entrepreneur will sit alongside the president and CEO of Life Labs, Sue Paish, and the COO of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Rachel Lewis at the Women in Leadership 2.0 conference hosted by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

As it did last year, the chamber is bringing three successful female entrepreneurs to Richmond to discuss women in leadership roles.

Bosch’s SmartSweets gummy bears, which are made of plant-based, soluble fibre instead of sugar or artificial sweeteners, are now sold in more than 900 stores across North America, generating more than $1 million in revenue.

“I’m super excited to be part of the panel,” Bosch said to the Richmond News. “(Not least) for the women aspect. I also thought it was so cool that they organized the large event for youths to attend…(exposing) them to entrepreneurship and acting on their ideas at a young age,” said Bosch.

She hopes to share the “powerful why” with the audience that helped her start the business and supported her when things were tough.

The idea of the company came after a “why” was asked by Bosch during a conversation with her grandmother.

Her grandmother told her that she regret-

ted having so much sugar over the years because of how it impacted her health and made her feel bad.

“To me, it was very shocking because candy is something we enjoyed together through the years. So I went to a store shelf to find something that naturally addressed sugar,” Bosch recalled.

“I was more shocked to find that not only did such a product not exist, but the fact of how much sugar was being used in candy products.”

Soon she decided that she wanted to begin her own quest to innovate an alternative type of confectionary sugar It’s like doing an that people could feel good about and MBA every day enjoy.

Having no – Tara Bosch background in science or business, Bosch spent a lot of time that summer researching, calling ingredient companies to ask questions and testing a formula in her kitchen, until the idea turned into reality.

“Really just Googling; it’s a matter of taking the time to do the digging (on the Internet),” said Bosch.

Starting a business at such a young age, Bosch had to face challenges that may have seemed overwhelming for a regular 23-yearold.

“It’s like doing an MBA every day,” laughed Bosch, who dropped out of University of B.C. after deciding to operate the business full-time.

One time, she drove to her first retailer hoping to bring them on board, but was so

nervous she felt like throwing up.

On another occasion, a manufacturing partner fell through, forcing Bosch and her team to find investment and other partners in a very short time.

“I think challenges and hurdles are blessings. In that moment you can’t tell why it’s happening, trusting the fact that it goes where you need to go,” said Bosch.

“If you don’t quit, ultimately you will get where you want to go.”

Bosch said she has met people who didn’t take her seriously because of her age.

“I actually think the naivety is a huge blessing when you are surrounding yourself with people who do have the experience; there is a beautiful marriage between (the two of you) and different perspectives that are super complimentary to each other,” she adds.

Now her team is initializing a social media campaign called KickSugar and aims to form a SmartSweets community online.

“I think there is no better time than…right now with social media to be able to reach so many people in such a short amount of time,” said Bosch.

“And it’s pretty amazing how powerful it is when there is an emotional cause tied to the product; when people use social media platforms to share how the product impacts their lives.”

etro Vancouver home sales surged in August as condo and townhome transactions saw increased competition, the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) announced Sept. 5.

Sales in the month were 19.6 per cent higher than the 10-year average for August. A total of 3,043 properties changed hands – a 22.3 per cent increase compared with the 2,489 sales one year ago. This is also up 2.8 per cent compared with July.

“First-time homebuyers have led a surge this summer in demand in our condominium and townhome markets,” said REBGV president Jill Oudil.

“Homes priced between $350,000 and $750,000 have been subject to intense competition and multiple offers across the region.”

In Richmond, the average apartment now sells for $594,100. Prices have soared 26.4 per cent in the past year.

Regionally, sales increased for all property types in the month, as did the benchmark home price. The number of detached unit sales increased 26 per cent year-over-year, and the benchmark price increased a more modest 2.2 per cent, reaching $1,615,100. This is up 0.2 per cent compared with July.

Apartment sales grew 20.1 per cent to a total of 1,613 sales, while the benchmark price grew 19.5 per cent to $626,800. Compared with July, prices were up 1.7 per cent.

A total of 529 townhomes were sold in the month – an increase of 22.7 per cent compared with August 2016. The benchmark price increased 12.8 per cent year-over-year and 1.9 per cent compared with July, reaching $778,300.

Oudil said detached home prices are not experiencing as much upward pressure as competition isn’t as intense as in the markets for attached properties.

Richmond home prices sell for an average of $1,676,000, almost the same as last year.

“Detached homes have entered a balanced market,” she said. “This means there’s less upward pressure on prices and that buyers have more selection to choose from and more time to make their decisions.”

A

remarkable coaching era is winding down at Hugh Boyd Secondary School.

After over 80 years of combined volunteer work, Bill and Bruce Haddow are getting set to say goodbye to the Trojans football program.

Bill is in his final year of teaching at Boyd.

He plans on doing some TOC work closer to his White Rock home next year and spend more time with his steadily growing craft brew business — White Rock Beach Beer. He has been coaching football for the past 42 years.

Bruce also teaches at Boyd and the lifelong Richmond resident is set to retire in December 2018. This will be his 40th season involved in the gridiron game.

Their tireless work has ensured the high school football tradition lives on in their hometown despite the city’s immense change in demographics the past 25 years.

While programs at Richmond, Steveston and Palmer eventually had to fold, the Trojans pressed on as the Haddows adapted to the ever-changing environment.

The school no longer has a junior team.

Instead, a deal was reached with the Richmond Raiders community program a year ago. Kids will play there up until Grade 10 then are encouraged to continue their careers

Currently, player numbers are down at the high school and community levels in many regions across the province for a variety of reasons, with concussion awareness being among them.

“Word has to get out there that it is way way different now,” said Bruce. “We rarely have contact in practice. It’s just about skill development and fundamentals. We are not banging the crap out of these kids. You can’t with numbers like this. “(This program) has got to keep going and that is my concern. Our numbers actually look pretty good compared a lot of other ‘AA’ size teams. Ten to 15 years ago, schools couldn’t wait to start a football program.

As for on the field, the Trojans are coming off a season that saw them reach the provincial semi-finals before falling to Vernon at B.C. Place last November. A number of key players have graduated but that doesn’t mean Boyd won’t be very competitive again.

They have some excellent weapons in the skill positions including senior running back Reace Mok, receiver Shakur Lopez and

speedster Zach Jackson. Getting them the ball will be promising Grade 10 quarterback Byron Ruvalcaba.

The defence will get a huge lift with the return of Ryan Jensen. The senior linebacker missed the entire 2016 season while his dad (McMath’s Rod Jensen) did a teacher exchange in Australia. The younger Jensen will have the attention of university scouts.

“He is going to play inside linebacker for us and it’s been a while since we have had an athlete with this kind of size that is aggressive, big and edgy,” said Bill. “He is going to take care of business for us and that’s good for our defence. He is also a great kid.

“On offence we definitely want to move the ball around a bit with some really talented kids. We don’t have a lot of depth but that’s common these days. There needs to be some luck involved too and that’s staying healthy.

As far as savouring his final season, Bill says there will be times that he will step back and soak in the environment that has been a huge part of his life.

“Now, I’m going to get all teary eyed,” Bill laughed. “There will be some extra moments in practice where I’m just going to watch it all go down.

“I can definitely seeing myself staying involved and being a part-time position coach a couple of days a week closer to home. But it won’t be here.”

Wheelchair rugby standout now coaching provincial team

an Chan is once again a prominent member of B.C.’s wheelchair rugby program except this time as a coach.

The 40-year-old Richmond native is teaming up with fellow Paralympian Trevor Hirschfield to oversee the provincial team.

Chan has won three Paralympic medals and four World Championship medals, and has been on the national team for nearly two decades. He was the subject of the OMNI documentary ‘Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop.’
