o ICBC is planning to raise the insurance rates for habitual offenders — i.e. immature, inattentive, selfish drivers.

For a full 2.5 seconds after the radio announcement, I was thrilled and muttered “well, it is about frickin’ t…” Wait. Rewind. What?

You mean, they aren’t already hammering drivers who are costing the corporation and, more importantly, all of us, tens of millions of dollars every year?

I checked my ears to make sure nothing was blocking the path to my brain. Nope, nothing there.

Looking at my dog in the rear view mirror, I asked Hershey why she thinks ICBC doesn’t have two cents to rub together and forecast exorbitant rate hikes.

Hershey didn’t have much to say, gesturing, instead, with her wet nose towards the aforementioned motorists in the left-hand lane on Westminster Highway driving about six feet behind each other.

ICBC has finally cottoned on to the region’s horrible road habits and are trying to “encourage” people to drive without their brain in park.

But what is with drivers in Canada, no, I mean B.C.; no, I mean the Lower Mainland, that they think they can react to anything at all unexpected at that close a distance?

The brainless practice isn’t peculiar to adolescent teenagers, male, female or ethnicities. It’s everyone!

And don’t get me started on the order of play when it comes to changing lanes.

In my native U.K., we were taught MSM (mirror, signal, manoeuvre). Around here, they do it in reverse, with astonishing frequency.

I read the other day someone — let’s call him Dave — on a local social media community page saying he had caused “just four” fender benders.

Really? Is it a round of applause you seek?

In the U.K. — yes, I’ve lived here for 10 years now and shouldn’t be making such references, but come on… — the insurance companies wouldn’t be touching Dave with a 10-foot pole (longer than Dave’s braking distance). Dave would be off the road until he could prove he’s not that Dave anymore.

It’s really quite simple. Hammer the Dave drivers of the world so much that they are petrified to be the cause of anything.

If he doesn’t change. Get him off the road. Problem solved. Next please.

Dear Editor, The letter in the June 23 edition

by Bob Orrick, from Delta, regarding the need for a bridge to replace the Massey Tunnel is one person’s opinion (and extremely territorial).

I was born in 1927 and recall the difficult times our family had in crossing the Fraser and know of the details of early pioneers crossing the river in a row boat.

Later, there was a small ferry that carried 35 cars and many times we were lined up from Steveston Highway to the river waiting for the ferries.

It was with a great sense of relief that the Massey Tunnel opened in 1969.

The Massey Tunnel was a wonderful addition to improving traffic south of the Fraser.

In my opinion, it would be a great help to twin the tunnel.

The improvements I have observed in my lifetime, 1927 to the present day, are tremendous and I hope these improvements continue.

It is my hope that Mr. Orrick and Delta Mayor Lois Jackson will find that there are other citizen opinions that are relevant.

This tunnel has served us well and it is my opinion that to twin the tunnel would be a great decision, rather than build a bridge.

Also, I feel that even with a new crossing, the congestion that occurs at the tunnel would cause line-ups at the other end, entering Vancouver.

At the north end of Richmond, there were two quaint bridges to go into Vancouver; one bridge leading from Richmond to Sea Island and the other crossing from Sea Island to Hudson Street in Vancouver.

There were frequent bridge closures when barges would bump into the bridges and make them inoperable.

Our politicians must stand and fight Dear Editor, Re: “‘Worst attack’ on farmland since ’73,” News, Aug. 23.

In my future vision, the farmed soils in Richmond will be our strength and source of pride, as they give rise to food for all.

As arable farmlands erode, so too, does our timeframe to act.

But how can we, when we have three levels of government all pointing fingers at each other and being lousy excuses for representatives of the public good?

Thankfully, the B.C. Greens’ leader/MLA Andrew Weaver has recently advocated for a means of food security protection from speculators: banning foreign buyers from parcels of farmland larger than a certain size (e.g. five acres).

The single biggest issue for new farmers is access to affordable farmland.

Richmond has become the “Wild West” for speculators, as they devour what remains, depreciating the availability and quality of the land.

They have succeeded in securing their investments, inflating prices in the process, while lobbyists work to rezone agricultural areas for residential and industrial use.

With only five per cent of B.C. in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), we cannot afford to be apathetic, as applications to build over 40,000-square-foot “homes” are immediate threats.

What would my great-grandchildren think?

This is happening on our watch!

Where have all our Richmond politicians gone?

MPs Joe Peschisolido and Alice Wong could be champions by winning the fight to remove the power to annex ALR from Port of Vancouver.

MLAs Jas Johal, Linda Reid, Teresa Wat and John Yap could try to act as supportive opposition and work with Weaver’s upcoming motions in the legislature, along with the wide, sweeping changes that will be brought forward by the Minister of Agriculture Lana Popham.

And then we have mayor and councillors in Richmond. From listening to their comments and reviewing their voting histories, only Carol Day and Harold Steves seem to understand the long-term consequences of our (in)action.

Supporting Day’s and Steves’ efforts to rein in sizes and quantity of mega-mansions and to prohibit non-ALR uses is a nobrainer.

If not, then I’d gladly replace one of the council members after the next election in October 2018.

Just follow the money to see who funds their campaigns and ultimately seems to benefit from their decisions.

T

he father of a Grade 6 boy from Spul’u’Kwuks elementary, who has been crippled by a rare bacterial infection, is taking his fight to change school notification policies to the B.C. Ministry of Health.

Sam Chen, whose son John was hospitalized in March with flesh-eating disease caused by invasive group A streptococcos, is asking Minister of Health Adrian Dix to amend the policy of notification to school classmates and their parents when a student is stricken by the serious, and often fatal, infection.

“We are calling for immediate change of the notification policy, to notify parents of the class immediately when one case of invasive strep A-bacterial infection is confirmed, so that other students can have the letter of notification and seek the treatment when one of the symptoms” appears, notes the Change. org petition, available for any concerned British Columbian to sign.

In March, John was diagnosed with flesheating disease. Chen later learned that another classmate had the same invasive strep A bacterial infection a week before.

There were also unconfirmed rumours, according to Chen, that cases of non-invasive strep A infections (such as strep throat) were in the class around this time.

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) policies do not mandate notification letters to parents if

one student contracts flesh-eating disease.

In John’s case, the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) noted this was the first time it had observed an apparent transmission in a school. Prior to this, school transmissions were never considered and informing parents of one case is thought to cause unnecessary worry and panic, according to VCH officials.

Strep A is a common bacteria that leads to common illnesses. It is rare when it turns invasive and attacks muscles and tendons, as is the case with John.

But cases are on the rise in B.C. Dr. Monika Naus, of the BCCDC, told the Richmond News that 2016 had the most cases of invasive strep A (303) since recordkeeping began in 1997 and that 2017 is on pace to set a new record.

“There’s no harm to have the notification system in place if there’s one invasive strep A case confirmed; notifying the parents to be alert, there’s no harm in it,” said Chen.

“Without the letter, it’s difficult for doctors and hospitals to have a prompt and correct diagnosis.”

Had a letter been sent out, Chen said a general practitioner likely wouldn’t have prescribed - as what did happen to John Advil and bed rest for what was a fast-moving, lethal infection with symptoms such as fever, body soreness, fatigue and sore throat.

Richmond school trustee Sandra Nixon has said she supports a policy amendment.

to stand and has lost significant amounts of muscles in several limbs.

Chen said he still has questions about what happened at Spul’u’kwuks in March and wonders if health officials would have sent their own children to school if they knew there was one case of invasive strep A and two apparent cases of non-invasive strep A. VCH told the News non-invasive cases are not reportable to the BCCDC. The Chen family of four has no secondary

family to care for them, after immigrating to Canada from China.

After months sitting bedside at the hospital, Chen must soon return to work at a hotel. A GoFundMe.com fundraiser aims to help the family with income loss, renting a one-level home, leasing a wheelchair van, and money for possible treatment in the U.S. (artificial muscles).

The Ministry of Health didn’t respond to the News by the time of going to print.

A notarized letter of consent from a guardian who is not living in the lower mainland and not present at registration time, with a copy of his/her passport. *We reserve the right to request additional documents if required.

3. An English Language Assessment appointment will be scheduled, if necessary, once registration is complete. The student placement process is as follows: 1. Place student at the catchment (neighbourhood) school. 2. If there is no space at the catchment school, the District will place the student at a nearby school.

Italian sips and sushi W

hat do you serve when you want to showcase premium Italian wines? You’d expect to be in a fine Italian restaurant starting with an antipasto and then moving on to a pasta with seafood or osso buco.

But if you’re Giulia Pussini, of Prosecco Superiore, and Olga Bussinello, of Valpolicella wines, you choose Miku, the Japanese restaurant at Canada Place in Vancouver.

Then you invite chef Yoshitaka Miyamoto to create seven contemporary Japanese dishes to demonstrate how versatile 16 different Italian wines can be.

The reception wines and those that were served with the seafood courses were Prosecco Valdobbiadene Superiore DOCG, the premium version of Prosecco DOC. Both are white sparkling wines produced from Glera grapes by the efficient and cheaper tank method, which translates into a friendly price for the consumer.

While Prosseco DOC’s basic version is produced in 556 villages in the Veneto and Fruili regions of northern Italy, Prosecco Superiore is made in only 15 special villages in the hilly region of Veneto. Because these vineyards are so steep, the grapes can only be picked by hand, ensuring a more premium product.

Two Prosecco Superiore Bruts, the driest style, were served as the reception wines at the Miku dinner. Bruts are excellent as predinner drinks because they are festive and their dryness and acidity activate your salivary

glands, preparing you for the feast to come.

Two other Bruts were paired with the first course of three types of aburi or seared sashimi: maguro (bluefin tuna), salmon and hamachi (yellowtail). This was followed by sockeye salmon oshi and prawn (ebi) oshi.

Oshi is an ancient type of sushi from Osaka.

Alternating layers of sushi rice, condiments and seafood are pressed in a small wooden box.

The delicate flavours of sashimi and sushi were not overwhelmed by the Prosecco Superiore, as the wine possesses a delicate aroma and flavour. And sparkling wines are excellent to cleanse the palate, which is helpful when you’ve just eaten raw fish along with ginger and various sauces.

The third course was pan-seared Hokkaido scallop, flown in from Japan’s northern-most island.

Accompanied by navel orange, watercress, and a putanesca with yuzu, (the sour citrus from Japan), the scallops were served with a couple of Extra Dry Prosecco Superiores.

Despite the label, this style of Proscecco Superiore is slightly sweeter than the Brut.

The extra sugar emphasized the wine’s apple and pear aromatics and balances the acid found in the scallop dish.

Join me next time for a review of the delicious fusion main courses and dessert I enjoyed with the Valpolicella reds and the Prosecco Superiores when Italy teamed up with Japan at Miku Waterfront Restaurant.

very classroom in Richmond should have a teacher come Tuesday, said Richmond Board of Education Chair Debbie Tablotney this week.

“We expect to be ready to go,” said the head trustee on Wednesday, as districts around B.C. continue to fill teacher vacancies in the wake of a restored collective agreement between the B.C government and teachers that will see fewer students in each classroom and more resource teachers.

But the Richmond School District is still expected to face shortages for substitute teachers this upcoming semester, as recruitment of teachers in Richmond, and across the province, reaches a critical juncture due to unaffordable living standards and low wages, according to the teachers’ union.

In Richmond, the district needed to hire 310 new, fulltime teachers this year. The district asked for about $30 million from the B.C. Liberal-dubbed provincial “Classroom Enhancement Fund,” which stems from a Supreme Court of Canada order last November to restore smaller classroom sizes.

Up until a new NDP government, backed by the B.C. Green Party, was confirmed and sworn in, the district had yet to receive full compensation to hire teachers, meaning the hiring process was delayed. n Debbie Tablotney As late as early July, the district was about $6 million shy of funding its new hires.

Adding to the new vacancies is the problem that B.C. remains a non-competitive place for teachers to work, according to B.C. Teachers’ Federation President Glen Hansman, who described the teacher-on-call situation in Surrey as a “gong show.”

Hansman said the high cost of housing and relatively low wages, particularly for new teachers, is compounding the vacancy problems.

“The word is out that we’re more or less the worse paid teachers in the country,” said Hansman.

This is despite a new contract signed in 2014 that will expire in 2019.

contract amendments, to bring teachers to B.C. Hansman suggested things such as student loan forgiveness, moving allowances and housing subsidies; as well, the union has pitched to the government to increase starting wages.

For any new teacher coming to Richmond, housing costs will eat into about half of their take-home salary. In rent alone, an older one-bedroom apartment, if available, will start at around $1,100 per month. Newer condos, if not listed on short-term rental sites, advertise for in excess of around $1,500 per month.

In Burkeville, a 400-square-foot laneway “shed” is presently advertised online for $1,000 per month.

“When you have an expensive place to live and don’t have a competitive salary, that makes it difficult,” said Baverstock.

ichmond residents can tour the globe in their own backyard this weekend.

The third annual Richmond World Festival kicks off Friday afternoon, where a mix of international cultures will be displayed through high-profile music, dance, food, sports and traditions.

More than 75 performances, over 80 exhibitors and about 50 food trucks will come together at nine stages to create a truly global journey for each attendee, according to City of Richmond spokesperson Ted Townsend.

“Come take an adventure and learn about other cultures; it’s a good opportunity to celebrate our city’s diversity,” said Townsend.

Townsend told the Richmond News that what sets the World Festival apart is the large number of professional artists participating across both traditional and contemporary shows.

“A lot of multicultural festivals really rely on amateur, community-based performers and

tend to be very traditional,” he said.

“We have a lot of that, but we also have many professional artists and contemporary modern performers. Many of them do current performances with traditional culture integrated.”

The international headliner of this year’s festival is South Korea’s famous K-Pop star Verbal Jint, who is set to wow the audience Friday night.

“He will add to the international flavour of the festival, which is indeed a ‘world’ festival,” said Townsend.

Most of the performers are local artists who trace their roots to First Nations, Asia, Africa, South and Central America and Europe.

There will also be well-known artists from across the country, such as the rockers Tokyo Police Club and electronic band Dragonette.

“The variety of entertainment activities people will see at the festival is really huge,” added Townsend.

Performances will include traditional ones such as Toque Flamenco (Latino), Khac Chi (Vietnamese), as well as South Korean drumming, and Indigenous dancing. There will also be modern art forms containing cutting-edge technologies at the Digital Carnival.

Townsend said it is hard to say how many different cultures will be represented at the festival, because some performances are a fusion of various cultures, such as the one

given by Cantonese opera performer Son of James.

“He has a lot of background in Chinese opera, and grew up under the influence of modern rock music, so now he plays a mixture of rock and soul that blends with traditional Asian sound,” said Townsend.

Children can also enjoy themselves by watching a puppet show or joining entertainer Chris Hamilton on the “Kids World Stage.”

“A lot of families like to come in the day time to enjoy it. In the evening the focus tends to move towards to the main stage, where musical headlines, more high-profile, well-known performances, tend to bring the younger audience,” said Townsend.

Alongside the various performances will be a large selection of food offered at the festival, including the global “FEASTival” of flavours courtesy of more than 50 food trucks.

There will also be culinary stages on the site, where celebrity chefs will give demonstrations.

At the same time, more than 80 exhibitors from various community centres and cultural organizations will add more colour to the event.

Bee Camp takes flight Trio shows ‘power of love’ in Fringe show SARAHDREWERY

he Sharing Farm and Terra Nova Nature School (TNNS) have just partnered in pioneering Richmond’s first children’s Bee Camp.

The Sharing Farm contributed our bee hives and our master beekeeper Leslie Williams and TNNS brought their experience as educators to create a camp for nine- to 12-year-olds, which was really something special.

When Emily Vera, of TNNS, first pitched me her idea earlier in the year, her enthusiasm and passion for bees made the concept impossible to resist. Luckily, the Community Foundation of Richmond and the Sage Foundation both agreed, and provided us the funding to purchase much-needed equipment to be used at the camp.

This included child-sized bee suits, a solar wax melter, candle-making materials and an observation hive. These excellent resources, combined with our program planning, will support future beekeeping programs for children of all ages.

Registration for Bee Camp filled up in a matter of hours, demonstrating a keen interest. Children learned about many aspects of honeybees, including the differences between workers, drones and queens; how to identify different stages of development (eggs, larvae, pupae); bee senses (how they see, hear and

smell); and the processes of swarms and mating. They also worked on bee-related crafts such as making candles out of beeswax (filtered using our new solar wax melter) and painting the hives bright colours so bees can find them more easily.

The unanimous highlight of the camp for the children was going into the hives every day, especially when they had the opportunity to hold a drone and feed him honey.

“It was fantastic to see the children become more comfortable around the bees as time went by,” Williams said. “I don’t wear gloves when I’m bee-keeping and by the end of the week, some of the children chose to take theirs off as well.”

Another highlight of the week was eating the freshly extracted honey. There was honey lemonade, honey popsicles, honey salad dressing, honeycomb and just plain honey.

The children also learned about native pollinators, not just honey bees, and went out spotting pollinators around the farm. They painted bumblebee boxes, which will be placed around the farm to increase bumblebee nesting habitat.

When I spoke to the children on the last day of camp, a large wasp landed quite close to one of the little girls. I asked her if she was scared of wasps and she replied, “A little, but they are good pollinators too!”

Bee camp has done its job.

hree Richmond artists will produce and perform in musical Cry-Baby in the upcoming Vancouver Fringe Festival.

Erika Babins, producer and choreographer of the show, said she is excited to have the Broadway musical performed in Canada the first time.

“It’s a story about a boy and a girl falling in love in the 1950s, how they combat their expectations, define each other and be true to themselves, and realize the power of love,” said Babins, a McRoberts secondary grad.

Based on John Waters’ comedy movie of the same name in 1990, the Broadway musical has won various awards and nominations.

Now Babins is bringing Cry-Baby to the stages in Vancouver for the first time.

“The music is amazing.

It’s original music from Broadway but sounds like music from the 1950s,” said Babins. “And our singers are killing it.”

Sixteen young actors will perform in the show, including Richmond actors and Burnett secondary grads Stephanie Wong and Daren Dyhengco.

Studying ballet from age three, Babins’ real musical journey started at age 10, when she got involved in the music department at McRoberts.

“Then I started receiving training at Gateway Theatre Academy and Burke Academy of Dance, and have continued since then,” she says.

The Richmond trio’s first show starts Sept. 7. Tickets are $14 (plus a one-time $5 Fringe membership fee).

The Richmond News’ latest recruit, reporter Daisy Xiong, is trying to pass her driving test in Richmond. She has bravely agreed to share her experiences, good and bad, with our readers over the next few (let’s hope less than a few) weeks until she passes.

I

failed my road test for the third time last week. Was I surprised? Not really.

One mistake can be fatal (in terms of passing the test) and I’ve learned this the hard way during my past three months learning to drive.

My mom decided she no longer needed her car and offered it to me. Bussing around in Richmond, especially under deadlines, can be trying, so I decided to accept her offer.

First, though, I had to pass my driving test.

My initial test was on June 27 at the ICBC location in Lansdowne, after more than 20 hours of training.

I felt confident, but as the saying goes, ignorance is bliss.

Deadly weekend ahead

I left the parking lot and entered a complicated crossroad – it’s a choke point along the route.

Here, there are no traffic lights and cars need to pass along the road to the left and merge into the road on the right.

I saw a car approaching, but thought that it was still distant, so I pressed on the gas and crossed the street.

“That was too close!” my examiner exclaimed.

Making him fear for his life was definitely not a good sign.

I continued to drive and tried to merge onto the right road, until the examiner slammed the safety brake down (the test car has a safety brake pedal in the passenger seat).

“There are cars coming from behind!” he wailed. I thought I saw him shudder from the corner of my eye.

I made a few other mistakes and the first test had been a disaster.

I hired a new instructor, who turned out to be awesome, and spent another 10 hours practising almost everything. After one month, I had my second road test, this time in Burnaby.

It went really well, until at one road, I needed to merge to the right before my lane ended. I sped up, trying to merge into the cars queued on my right-hand side.

But the car behind me didn’t let me in and closed the gap.

s British Columbians ramp up to enjoy the final weekend of summer holidays, drivers are being reminded that as many as 2,000 crashes could happen this long weekend.

According to ICBC, about six people are killed and 520 more

are injured every Labour Day long weekend.

Drivers should expect more volume on highways and roads, with motorists taking their final summer road trips. ICBC warns drivers to watch for drowsy drivers and to look out for symptoms of fatigue in themselves.

One month after that, I took my third test — at ICBC in Richmond again. This time I was ready to embrace my success and come home with a temporary driver’s licence.

I started the car, moved slowly out of the parking lot, entered the main road, and all looked good. I saw a car coming, but judged it was at a safe distance, or that it might slow down, so I rushed to enter the road.

The examiner slammed the safety break. Failed. Again.

My instructor summarized: only 20 per cent is skill; 80 per cent is attitude; don’t rush; be patient.

Honestly, I don’t mind strict road tests. They do consume time and money, but they ensure the safety of people in cars and pedestrians crossing the road.

I have seen so many drivers crossing solid lines, changing lanes without signalling, forcing people to let them enter, speeding... all practices that would make them fail a road test.

If everyone drives in the same way they do to pass a driving test, the roads would be much safer.

For me, now it’s time to go back to public transit and my Razor Scooter.

Officials say drivers need to stay focused on the road and watch for children, especially in or around school zones. Police and Speed Watch volunteers will be monitoring drivers’ speeds in school zones in Richmond and across B.C. to help students get a safe start to the school year.

A

fter rallying back and forth for a while, the ball fell towards my right hand. This was a good chance.

I waved my paddle back quickly, then hit, watching the ball draw a beautiful arc before bouncing on the table and landing on the floor. I heard cheers erupt in the previously silent room.

I had scored one point against the Canadian Paralympian table tennis champion – the peak of my table tennis “career” to date.

However, my glory ended right there. I was soon crushed

by Canadian Paralympic athlete Chim-Hing (Stephanie) Chan, who came fourth in the 2016 Rio Paralympics and was a gold medal winner at the 2015 Parapan American Games.

Standing almost still, Chan returned my shots from any corner of the table, waving them back with apparent ease.

The balls she was now hitting were simply too fast and were flying past me.

I managed to get on the end of some softer balls, but they bounced into oblivion as soon as my paddle touched them.

“It’s a rotating ball,” she explained with a smile.

I felt humbled. Soon I joined the audience who had seemingly enjoyed our brief encounter on the table, although most cheered for Chan.

The room at the Richmond Centre for Disability (RCD) was full of laughter, cheer and applause last Thursday around

noon during Chan’s special visit to the charity’s weekly table tennis program.

During her appearance, she played table tennis with RCD members and seniors and showed them how to play.

“It doesn’t matter if you are a senior or have a disability, you can still do exercise,” said Chan to the members.

This Richmondite has proven that with her own experience. Although acquiring her disability at age four, Chan didn’t begin playing table tennis until the age of 44, when she decided to take up ping pong to keep active.

She then won a gold, two silver and one bronze medal at three Parapan Ams from 2007 to 2015.

Taking part in the Rio Paralympics at the age of 59, Chan was one of the most senior athletes in the Canadian team. She hopes her experience can inspire more seniors and people with disabilities to participate in the sport and get active.

“I’m very happy to be here,” she told the Richmond News.

“For some people with disabilities, they are restricted to doing sports with their upper body, thus table tennis can be a very good exercise for them,” added Chan.

Ella Huang, RCD’s executive director, said she was very impressed watching Chan play.

“It’s so inspiring for our members to watch this, so we all have hope (to do sports),” Huang said.

She hopes more people with disabilities and seniors will join RCD’s free table tennis exercise, taking place between 12 and 2 p.m. every Thursday.

Prada and Armani vie for your cultural soul High-end fashion brands move into the broader arts landscape John Masters

n preparation for the World Fair Milan hosted in 2015, the city spruced up existing galleries and museums and opened some new ones.

Among the additions were a couple backed by names that may come as a surprise: Prada and Armani.

In Milan, Italy’s fashion capital, high-end brands such as Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace compete in shops on the streets that make up the Golden Rectangle, as well as in the magnificent 1867 glass-and-iron arcade the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. But now the country’s largest and second-largest luxurygoods houses have gone a step further, vying not just for your euro, but for your artistic soul. This seems, in fact, the coming thing: high-end fashion brands extending the name by moving into the broader arts landscape.

In Paris in 2014, for example, LVMH opened the Fondation Louis Vuitton, designed by Frank Gehry and dedicated to showing contemporary works. It will be joined in 2019 by the Pinault Collection, named for François Pinault, whose company owns Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen.

In Milan, Prada and Armani both opened their exhibition spaces in 2015. Fondazione Prada is harder to reach (a 10-minute walk from the Lodi Metro station, along a street that has a railway culvert on the right and not much interesting on the left), in what used to be a distillery.

Designed by Dutch “starchitect” Rem Koolhaas, it’s a compound of several buildings, some low-slung and aluminum-

Fondazione Prada is undeniably a serious commitment to c cutting-edge architecture and art, and is by no means a crass c commercial venture. There’s nary a Prada product on display.

Quite the opposite is the case at Armani Silos, in what was o once a Nestlé granary. Easier to reach (five minutes from the Porta Genova Metro station, on the tree-lined, rather Parisian V Bergognone), it was designed by Giorgio Armani himself: a Via s soothing, symmetrical temple of high ceilings and no windows.

Three of its four storeys are a museum of Armani designs, w a plaque next to each mannequin providing the date the with c costume was created. More than 600 examples of men’s and w women’s clothes, spanning 40 years, are on show.

The ground floor of Silos has temporary exhibitions, such a American photographer Larry Fink’s essays on 1950s beat as c culture and present-day Hollywood partying.

It’s interesting work, and because it’s in black-and-white, it f perfectly into the cool grey cement and minimalist lines of fits t building, but it isn’t the slap upside the head the Prada the s stuff is. Fondazione Prada is messier, more pretentious, and harder to navigate.

Both come with cafés. Prada’s was designed by American f director Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel) with film a 1960s’ retro look: Formica tables, pinball machines and a j jukebox.

Armani extends Silo’s cerebral coolness with a polished e espresso machine behind the bar in a room of perfect balance.

asmin Bhullar has practised yoga for 20 years and taught it for a decade. She’s 25 years old.

If you do the math, yes, she was just the tender age of five when she first experienced the ancient discipline.

Now the Richmond girl is opening her own yoga studio – something she was always eager to do – and hopes to revolutionize yoga practice by making it fun, mobile and open to children as young as Kindergarten age.

“I have been practising yoga with my mom (who is a yoga teacher) since I was five,” said Bhullar. “Yoga has been huge in my life… I can say yoga makes me who I am. I hope to share the benefits with more people.”

She recently launched her yoga studio, Laughing Buddha, and held a free pop-up class at Minoru Park last Saturday.

However, Laughing Buddha doesn’t have an address or a set schedule – it’s a “mobile” studio that can move, following participants throughout Metro Vancouver.

“Through my years of practising and teaching yoga, I noticed that many people don’t go to yoga class because it never fits their schedule,” added Bhullar, the younger sister of Richmond’s former Olympic wrestler turned MMA fighter Arjan.

“They’d much rather do things that fit around their own agenda. So my studio will

not set schedules or locations for students - I bring the class to you.”

Bhullar explained that classes will be arranged upon the students’ request, at a time and location that’s convenient for them.

It can take place in a public park, at someone’s backyard, at their homes or in a community centre.

Bhullar, who has a full-time job on the side with a flexible schedule, said the convenience will not be added to the price.

A $13 drop-in fee for classes of more than six and $80 per hour for a whole class of five students or less.

And launching a mobile yoga studio is the first step in achieving Bhullar’s bigger goal to bring her class to school children.

Starting practising from a very young age, Bhullar said she enjoyed the experience when she was a kid.

“I’m always on the go, and my friends wonder how I have so much energy,” said Bhullar.

“Because I have practised yoga and meditation for so long, I learned how to be a relaxed and calm person. People often think yoga is an adult thing, but it can help children, too. It can help them handle pressures and ease anxieties.”

Bhullar has taught yoga as part of a martial arts program and thinks teaching yoga to children “is the most rewarding experience ever.”

“I incorporate games into yoga moves in my class. For example, I tell a story of a lion in the jungle, then we do lion pose, lion

breathe, but they are actually yoga moves.

Kids love it.”

Bhullar recalls a time when a parent, at one of the martial art/yoga classes, came to her and asked what she taught her kid in the class.

“The student went home and started teaching her parents yoga and meditation, and they have practised it ever since,” she recalls.

“That brought me to tears.”

Bhullar is now approaching Richmond schools, hoping one day to bring yoga mats into the classroom to teach the little students during lesson time or at lunch breaks.

Breaking stereotypes associated with yoga is another focus for Bhullar, especially if, in her mind, it presents a barrier for people.

“When people talk about yoga, they often think about the serious environment and those high technical moves. But they are not really what yoga is all about,” she said.

Bhullar, however, said she doesn’t plan her classes or label the moves, but, instead, flows with her clients’ abilities.

“I observe how my students react, what they are capable of, then decide what to teach next.”

Creating a fun vibe and making students smile is also an important part of Bhullar’s class.

“Everyone should feel comfortable and happy during a yoga class,” said Bhullar. “Yoga is not anything but moving and breathing.”

Fencer taking aim at 2020 in Toyko Mark Booth

As one of Canada’s top fencers, Shaul Gordon treasures his time at home.

It’s a chance to catch up with family and friends — even provide a lesson or two for his younger sister Tamar back at the club that has meant so much to his career.

“She is competing in her first North American Cup in November and we are all excited for her,” he smiled.

Gordon has since returned to Montreal where the 23-year-old Richmond native is entering his second-year of law school at Laval University and continuing a journey that he hopes will take him to the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Toyko.

The move back east was necessary to train with fellow members of the national sabre team at the Institut National du Sport du Quebec — the province’s version of the Olympic Oval — which happens to be just a 10-minute train ride from Laval.

In fact, Gordon is currently the only athlete from B.C. on the national team in any of the sport’s three disciplines that also features epee and foil.

His busy summer schedule included helping Canada win silver in the team event at the Pan Am Championships that happened to take place in Montreal. He was also eighth in the individual competition.

Gordon was then off to Germany for the World Fencing Championships for the fifth conShaul Gordon secutive year.

The opportunity to compete in Montreal and in front of a hometown crowd was similar to what he encountered two years earlier when he was also a member of Canada’s silver medal winning sabre team at the Pan American Games in Toronto. For an unheralded sport, at least in North America, it’s moments like that you savour.

lievable, Gordon reflected. “People from all around the city came out to watch and cheered us on. It’s something we don’t experience that often in our sport. It was more of the same in Montreal and it really does make a difference.”

Gordon’s passion for fencing might just be in his blood.

The sport is very popular in Europe and he happened to live in Italy until he was 10.

There was even a fencing tradition on his mom’s side of the family.

Gordon took it up when he was seven and it soon was his favourite over the other sports his parents urged him to try. However, he would hit a potential crossroad three years later when his family moved to Canada.

“At the time, we weren’t even sure if there were any fencing clubs or if I even could keep doing it,” Gordon recalled.

Fortunately, the Gordons settled in Richmond which also happened to be home of the Dynamo Fencing Club.

national team coach Victor Gantsevich and was on his way to becoming one of the top up-and-coming fencers in the country.

Even then, it took plenty of travelling to ensure his progress, often driving to Seattle for weekend competitions. He spent his entire Grade 10 year in Montreal where he improved his French and trained with other top fencers in the sabre discipline to secure his national team status.

Once Gordon graduated from Richmond Secondary, he applied at several U.S. schools with a reputation for their fencing programs and was accepted into Penn State University.

He enjoyed an All-American freshman season for the Nittany Lions then took his career three hours away — this time at Penn University where he eventually earned a degree in political science. He also continued to thrive in the NCAA environment, as a perennial First Team Ivy League member.

“Penn State was arguably the best or second best fencing school in the U.S. but I

chose to (transfer) to Penn for the academics,” explained Gordon. “The NCAA experience was great. The fall semester was pretty relaxed and there were a lot of competitions in the winter, usually every other weekend.

“The beauty of the NCAA systems is it’s so supportive — the school and the fencing program. They make it very accommodating for you so are in a good position to balance both.”

Sometime in the fall of 2019, Gordon will have earned his law degree at McGill. That will free up his time for one final push at qualifying for the 2020 Olympics.

“That’s the goal,” he added. “At one time I had a legitimate shot at making the Rio (Olympics) but I was preparing for graduation from Penn. “We now have three years and things are looking good for us now. We are all young and healthy.

“This year was an up and down one for me but I was also working on a few things.

(Three years before the next Olympics) is the time to be doing that.”

Olympics crowned Sportstown Cup champions R

ichmond Adult Soccer Association’s Summer League concluded at King George Park last week with Richmond Olympics FC repeating as Division Two Cup champions after a 4-0 win over Metropolitan.

The Olympics took control of the match early in the first half on a goal by Tim Sowerby. That was followed shortly by a run from midfield straight down down the centre and Mike Revell put

Richmond up 2-0 at the half.

Metropolitan struggled with injuries in the final 45 minutes and could not find the back of the Olympics’ net.

The outcome was inevitable when Trevor Tyrer scored the Olympics’ third goal in the 70th minute. Mike Miller would later round out the scoring.

The Olympics are one of a number of teams in the history of the RASA Summer League to repeat cup cham-

pions. They relinquished the old Pumphouse Trophy that had been in place since 1986 for the new Sportstown Soccer Shop Cup — thanks to store owner Craig Burnham.

No team has done it three consecutive times in either division. Next year, the Olympics and Danny Burns Challenge Cup First Division winners Rino’s Tigers both will have a shot at history.

It’s the first time in recent memory that four separate teams won titles.

The Tigers captured the Danny Burns Cup a week earlier by spoiling the Blaze’s perfect season with a 6-3 victory thanks to a monster performance by Dylan Dailly.

The Tigers struck in the opening minute when Milan Ghandesha blasted a low shot past Delta’s keeper.

The Blaze seemed stunned by the early goal and, in the 20th minute, Dailly had Tigers up 2-0.

The regular season champs were not playing their usual game and the Tigers’ attack looked daunting.

Fortunately for Delta, goalkeeper Alex Kelsey was in

brilliant form and made some outstanding saves to keep his team in the game. With only a few minutes to go to halftime, Matteo Serka sent a header past the Tigers’ keeper to make it 2-1.

In the second half, the Tigers continued their attacking form and were soon up by two again when Dailly scored on a breakaway. Delta came back and Geoff Salt, winner of this year’s Golden Boot Award as

top scorer in Division One, closed the gap to 3-2.

But the Tigers kept coming and another breakaway saw Kelsey make a brilliant save only to see the rebound go to Dailly. Kelsey brought him down resulting in a penalty.

Dailly completed his hat trick and the lead was 4-2.

Salt would score from a penalty as well but Dailly added two more goals to give him five on the evening and seal the victory.
