ll summer long I’ve been talking to my fourfoot-high Roma tomato plant on my townhouse balcony, sweet-talking the green fruit into turning red.

Three tomatoes have fallen for it. And with us now entering the last throes of summer, I’ll settle for an orange first date at this rate.

By the way, I’m laying the blame for the late harvest at the feet of a record-breaking wet spring, rather than the wet blanket provided by my horticultural chat-up lines.

So it was kind of ironic, in my little world at least, that I noticed during my daily exercise walk from our office on Ackroyd Road to Lansdowne Centre that the giant red balls – remnants of a forgotten giant called Target – had turned bright green overnight.

Was Lansdowne ripening in reverse, I joked to myself. (No one else laughed, of course) The upper sections of the walls on the southeast corner of the centre had also turned green.

As it turns out, it’s not the shopping centre management trying to forever erase the memory of the massive flop that was U.S.-based Target’s Canadian venture.

No, it is, in fact, potentially the dawning of a new era at Lansdowne in the shape of the popular Asian supermarket chain T & T, which will exorcise the ghost of Target with an opening next summer.

Personally, I’m not a fan of Asian cuisine (I know, I work in Richmond etc. etc.), so the move hardly has me punching the air.

I’d much prefer they resurrected horse racing — not seen at Lansdowne since 1960 — at the centre, given how much I miss the sport from my native U.K. (Vancouver’s Hastings Park, although sweet, doesn’t really hit the mark).

However, with the odds of a return to Lansdowne for horse racing about as good as Donald Trump winning a lifetime contribution title at the World Media Awards, I guess I’ll have to settle for fresh river fish and Wei Long (spicy snack) at T & T. My insignificant and petty preferences aside, it is great to hear of a big name moving back into Lansdowne, especially considering the centre — in its current form — will only be there for another decade or so, with major redevelopment on the horizon.

As much as I enjoy my daily power-walk around and through the centre, it is slightly depressing to see a large section of it lying empty every day for more than two years (now I know how Steveston residents must feel, a la Onni/Imperial Landing).

And, if I’m really honest, the buzz that Aberdeen Centre and Richmond Centre enjoy is conspicuous by its absence at Lansdowne and I’ve no doubt T & T will inject some much-needed electricity into the site.

Here’s hoping, for the sake of Lansdowne, it doesn’t turn out to be another sweet deal that turns sour.

Richmond needs more culinary diversity Dear Editor, As much as I greatly appreciate and enjoy the diversity of dining options that are situated in and around Steveston, I have to admit that after living in downtown Vancouver for 35 years, there are food experiences that I miss very much.

I miss being able to get a good hot dog from the street vendor outside the Vancouver Art Gallery or at the Kits Beach and English Bay concession stands.

I miss the matzo-ball soup and mile-high pastrami sandwiches from my favourite Jewish restaurant, the bagels from Siegal’s Bagel Shop, the delicious Humbow from the B.C. Royal Cafe in China-

town, and the wide selection of take-away dishes at the deli counters at Max’s Deli on Oak Street and at various Choices grocery stores.

Most of all, I miss the small ramen bars that are such an integral part of the downtown dining scene in Vancouver.

All of these represent eating experiences that are missing from life in or near Steveston, and perhaps for most of Richmond, and I think it is extremely unfortunate that they are.

Perhaps the influx of younger people and families into the Steveston area will encourage some entrepreneurs to open a Max’s-style deli with authentic pastramion-rye sandwiches with

huge pickles, a bagel shop where you can watch the fresh bagels being cooked on the premises, or, at the top of my wish-list, a small urban-style ramen bar where the menu is appropriately limited and the noodles and broth are lovingly cooked.

In the meantime, I have to make my way downtown to enjoy any of the above mentioned food experiences.

A little more diversity in eating options in the Steveston area would keep me closer to home and make me a much happier gourmand.

Simply put: Our diversity needs more diversity.

Dear Editor, I see many positive and negative comments published about the fast-paced development that has happened and is still happening in Richmond.

Having travelled to many countries around the globe, when I come back home, I am thankful for all the facilities and development we enjoy in our beautiful city.

Housing issues linked Dear Editor, People in the Lower Mainland must be getting tired of reading about the housing affordability crisis and the attack on farmland from mega-homes, speculation and many other non-farm activities.

The two issues are linked. They are the result of a growing and changing population in this part of B.C. I live on Blundell Road in East Richmond.

The couple of blocks that make up my neighborhood have seen numerous small farm lots of 0.5 to 1.5 of an acre taken up with very large homes. Usually there are at least two or three per year. This year there are eight large homes under construction.

Most of these small AG1-designated lots have never been farmed and now, with large homes on them, they never will be. If these homes last 30 or more years, will they then be demolished and a hobby farm will suddenly appear?

Small farm lots in the Agricultural Land Reserve are a complete fiction. The Agricultural Land Commission does not require lots of less than two acres to be farmed. So

why are they in the reserve?

There will always be small-scale farming on small lots. However, the data shows that farming on less than two acres is more a passion and hobby than farming.

My two children cannot hope to enter the housing market in this part of B.C. They are among hundreds, if not thousands of young people who would like to remain where they grew up and own a place of their own.

This is how cities and communities are supposed to develop, with each generation surpassing the previous one and further developing local culture.

The eight homes currently under construction on my part of Blundell Road will house eight families.

If I had my way, the small fictional and agriculturally useless lots that are all over Richmond and Surrey would be taken out of the ALR, rezoned for multi-family only and on my street, 32 to 36 families would have a place to live at an affordable price.

I agree with the letter from R. Lewis regarding the flourishing black market selling of food products in Richmond. I did contact Vancouver Coastal Health and was told by a manager this type of selling was “buyer beware” and was nothing they would pursue. Management seems out of touch and have forgotten their mandate of protecting the public.

he Corporation of Delta has released a five-minute video in its ongoing push to sway the province’s new decision makers not to kill the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project.

According to the municipality, the animated whiteboard video, released last week and available on Delta’s website, will “bring the facts to light” and “explains why we, as a region, need a bridge.”

The City of Richmond, conversely, is vehemently opposed to the bridge proposal and is pushing for an alternative.

Delta has been pushing the hashtag #WeNeedaBridge since the B.C. Liberals lost power to the Green-backed New Democrats in May’s provincial election.

Municipal officials have been trying to get a meeting with Green Leader Andrew Weaver, who has stated he’s not in favour of a bridge, noting twinning the existing tunnel seems like the best option.

Having compiled a large volume of third party reports that support a replacement of the tunnel, Delta officials have also been trying to meet with Premier John Horgan.

mayor Lois Jackson was part of a delegation that met with Transportation Minister Claire Trevena, a session Jackson described as productive.

On Monday, Jackson and CAO George Harvie met with Green Party deputy leader Adam Olsen, the MLA for Saanich-North and the Islands, who invited Delta officials to discuss the project.

Last week, Delta council endorsed a staff report urging the provincial government to extend the contract process so it has the opportunity to review all the information before making a decision on the 10-lane, $3.5-billion bridge.

Delta is also asking the province to address immediate safety concerns regarding the aging tunnel, including the electrical systems, deteriorating concrete, ventilation and the need for a better warning system for over-height vehicles following numerous instances of damage to the tunnel’s fire sprinkler system.

The City of Richmond is pitching twinning the existing tunnel with either a four-lane or two-lane underwater crossing.

In a letter this month, Richmond mayor Malcolm Brodie acknowledged it “is imperative that the on-going congestion around the tunnel be addressed in a timely manner.”

ave you noticed the giant, red balls and walls turning green outside Lansdowne Centre this week?

It’s more than a paint job, it’s a very large sign of things to come at Richmond’s oldest, existing shopping centre.

Opening next summer — and filling the south-east anchor spot vacated by the Target flop in April 2015 — will be the city’s third and newest T & T Supermarket.

The deal to bring in T & T, which specializes in Asian produce, as Lansdowne’s latest anchor has been in the works for more than a year and is a huge boost to the centre, according to the mall’s marketing manager Bronwyn Bailey.

T & T — which has 23 stores nationwide, including at Richmond’s Yaohan Center and Hollybridge Way — will occupy the 74,000-square-foot, first floor of the former Target and Zellers store.

“The deal was a long time in coming, so it’s great to see it finally happening,” Bailey told the Richmond News on Wednesday.

“We’re really excited about this, as the unit has been vacant since April 2015. It’s going to be a big breath of fresh air for the mall for the rest of its life (10 years).

“Until then, T & T is going to be huge for the centre.”

though it’s understood the early phases will be built around the existing mall.

Bailey added that the second floor of the unit in question is still vacant, saying that “nothing is certain yet; it will depend, perhaps, on who would like to fit in (with T & T).”

What is almost certain from the T & T move is a major spike in customer traffic at the centre.

“The boost in traffic is going to be incredible for everyone; we expect it might attract other tenants,” said Bailey, adding that although the centre does have a relatively high occupancy rate, there are a few smaller units available.

orkSafeBC says it will begin a new educational campaign to better ensure home contractors are properly disposing of asbestos at construction sites.

The measures come after a rash of asbestos-related stop-work orders and are aimed at all contractors — however, the matter may be of particular interest to Richmond residents in single-family homes who are living next to a home demolition site.

“The regulatory consequences of contractors not identifying asbestos properly, not removing it safely and not following safe work procedures include stop-work orders and fines. This year to date, WorkSafeBC has issued more asbestos-related stop-work orders and fines than in all of 2016 — resulting in lost hours, blown deadlines and cancelled projects,” noted WorkSafeBC in a media advisory last week.

WorkSafeBC said that in homes built before 1990, asbestos — a toxic substance — can potentially be found in more than 3,000 building materials.

“Asbestos can be released into the air when these building materials are drilled, sawed, sanded or broken up during a renovation or demolition,” noted the provincial regulatory organization.

If asbestos isn’t properly contained, con-

taminated particles can billow into neighbouring properties. And Richmond has some of the smallest setbacks between houses.

According to the May/June WorkSafeBC Magazine, several Richmond firms have been penalized for unsafe practices in recent months in single-family homes.

Last November, 3D Environmental Group Ltd. was charged just over $37,000 for two separate, high-risk asbestos abatement violations.

In one incident, the company took asbestos out of a single-family home and didn’t wet the contaminated materials; nor did it contain the site.

In January, B King Construction was fined $2,500 for having its workers not wear protective asbestos gear at a single-family home construction site.

Also in January, Seattle Environmental Consulting Ltd. was fined $20,000 after workers were observed throwing away asbestos-contaminated materials without proper containment protocols. Material billowed from the site into the air, noted WorkSafeBC. From 2013 to 2015, the company was reported to have been fined almost $280,000 for other incidents.

Repeated exposure to asbestos can have dire consequences for workers, noted WorkSafeBC. “If workers breathe in enough asbestos, their lungs can be permanently damaged or result in death.”

Tax fears for mall Graeme Wood

A

small strip mall adjacent to the Capstan Village area is facing an extraordinary property tax hike that threatens the viability of several mom-and-pop shops and restaurants, according to its property manager.

“They’re ready to lynch me because I never saw this coming,” explained Dave Jackson of the sentiments reverberating throughout the small mall he manages at the southeast corner of Garden City Road and Capstan Way. The mall’s owner was handed an $18,556 tax hike over last year — a 26-per-cent increase — from $69,719 to $88,275.

The extra bill will need to be divided amongst the six establishments, which includes four restaurants and an insurance agency.

Jackson explained that, in his 40 years in property management, he’s never seen “common expenses,” which include property taxes, increase more than the base rent in such a drastic manner.

“It used to be that common expenses in commercial properties were 25 to 30 per cent of base rent. Now the common expenses are in excess of 100 per cent of the base rent,” said Jackson.

Jackson questions where all the money is going at city hall.

“They’ve got all this revenue. I don’t know what they’re doing with it,” said Jackson.

In a reply to his queries, City of Rich-

mond’s revenue manager Ivy Wong explained that the property’s taxes shot up so dramatically because taxes are based on BC Assessment’s valuation and for 2017, the property was valued 47 per cent more than in 2016 (from $5.1 million to $7.5 million).

Wrote Wong to Jackson, via email: “When a property increase in assessment value [is] in line with the average increase for the City, the property should see a minimal increase in property taxes.

“When a property has an assessed value significantly greater than the average, there will be a corresponding larger than average tax increase. This is what happened in 2017, where the average increase in assessment value for class 06 (commercial) properties in the City was 19.65 per cent.”

Jackson said he foresees problems with tenant viability.

“Everyone’s stuck with this. I’ve got little tenants here and had to hand them a bill for $2,500 to $3,000, or whatever,” said Jackson.

In other properties he manages across the Lower Mainland, he’s seen the same thing.

“A Mac’s convenience store in Surrey we look after, they tell me they just have to pull out because they can only charge so much for a coffee. Their common expenses are so high,” said Jackson.

He said he wasn’t sure why BC Assessment valued the property so high. It is nearby to new developments, however it is also across the street from an empty field and is next to a residential zone.

Telling tales... the traditional way Artist brings ‘Stories on Wheels’ to Richmond Daisy Xiong

“K

nock, knock, knock, Kamishibai, Kamishibai! Stories on Wheels is about to begin!”

This is the opening line Lenard Stanga uses every time.

Stanga is an artist of Kamishibai, a traditional storytelling art originating from Japan.

Kamishibai means “paper drama” in Japanese, but Stanga gave it an English-language name: “Stories on Wheels.”

And he will tell stories “on wheels” at the upcoming Richmond World Festival (see story, page 12).

“Japanese storytellers would ride their bikes, from town to town, or from street corners to street corners, then set up their bicycles and tell stories,” said Stanga. “They used picture cards to tell stories, 10 to 15 cards for a story, each story is about 10 minutes long. They would gather a crowd and sell candies from the back of the bike.”

A bike, a wooden box and a stack of picture cards are everything Stanga needs for his show.

“There are techniques in this storytelling. Sometimes you pull the cards very quickly, sometimes only show half of the next picture, or suddenly raise your voice to raise tensions,” Stanga explained.

He said this type of storytelling was suddenly no longer popular in the 1950s in Japan, as kids could watch television inside. But Stanga has brought it to life in B.C. by performing for the public at events.

“It has been very popular, not only among children, but parents, too,” he said. “Adults don’t hear many stories nowa-

days and they often find it comforting.”

He also noted that this traditional way of storytelling can exercise people’s imagination because it’s what they rely on to follow the stories.

Stanga believes telling stories in person creates a magic that digital technologies cannot replace.

“We can always entertain ourselves by movies and mass media, but something is missing when you don’t share things in a live experience.

“When I perform, I can really feel the magic, the connections to the audience. It feels like we share something special.”

“We invested a lot of money in the ambiance this time,” said Bob Singh, owner of Ginger Indian Cuisine. “It’s going to be a combination of Western Interior with authentic Indian food.”

Redefining what fusion can mean in the restaurant business, Bob and his wife Mandeep focused on creating a western fine-dining feel, something that is not very common with restaurants that serve traditional Indian food.

With twice the amount of seats than the first location, this second incarnation of Ginger Indian Cuisine will become, Bob said, “the biggest and first fine-dining Indian restaurant in Richmond.”

The menu will remain the same, barring a few special new items. As is with the first location, the restaurant will continue to be dedicated to making dishes that do not use any artificial dyes and food colours. Rather, Bob said, “we use only the ingredients’ natural food colour.”

What will be different about this location?

Aside from doubling in size, the second Ginger Indian Cuisine will have a newly built lounge area, “so if somebody wants to have a couple of drinks and watch a game,” Bob said, “they can do so in that half of the restaurant.”

In a little more than a week, youth will say hello to a new school year. And while for many it’s an exciting time, the change in routine can give some kids back-to-school jitters.

Meeting new teachers, worrying about where to sit at lunch and wondering if they have classes with friends are common sources of anxiety for students of all ages – all the way from pre-school to high school.

“Children and youth can build up a lot of stress and anxiety about having to get back into a routine and what to expect when the new school year begins,” said Dr. Susan Baer, a psychiatrist in the Mood and Anxiety Disorders clinic at B.C. Children’s Hospital.

F

or a second year in a row, all commercial fishing of the Fraser River’s sockeye salmon has been closed by the Fraser River Panel, the regulatory body that assesses annual salmon runs.

Only 1.7 million sockeye are expected to return to the Fraser this year, which is just over a third of the 4.4 million that were expected at the start of the year.

This year’s estimate follows last year’s historic, 120-year-low run of only 853,000 sockeye and is lower than the

1.9 million fish in 2009 that prompted the Cohen Commission to investigate declining salmon stocks in the Pacific.

The closure should put a premium price on salmon for consumers, according to local fisherman Gus Jacobson.

“Because there’s so few fish, the costs will go sky high,” said Jacobson, a gillnetter for the past 56 years.

“The fishermen get a cut then the public gets hosed on top. There’s demand and no supply.

“My son (a fisherman) has 400 customers but he can’t produce because there’s no fish. People are crying for fish.”

A sockeye may cost upwards of $30

now. Some are available from small fishery openings on Vancouver Island and as far north as Alaska.

By comparison n Fisherman Gus Jacobson Richmondites could buy $5-10 fish in 2014 when 19 million fish came back to the river during the peak of the species’ four-year life cycle.

The panel reported lower than average water discharge in the river (23 per cent less) and higher than normal temperatures (0.9 degrees Celsius above the 20 degrees average) in the Fraser River.

Both factors are not good indicators for salmon survival upstream.

To date, First Nations have only been allowed to catch about 11,100 sockeye for food, social and ceremonial purposes.

Meanwhile, test fisheries show pink salmon are returning to Johnstone Strait at half the rate.

The panel hasn’t updated its in-season forecast, but the pre-season prediction was about 8.7 million fish.

“That’s the big boogeyman in the closet,” said retired fish biologist and community activist Otto Langer.

“I just don’t think fish have much of a chance if temperatures keep increasing in the Fraser.

“A salmon is a cold water fish. They have to have time in the ocean but now they swim more to find colder water . . . That’s a lot of stress on the fish,” said Langer.

Research from University of B.C. is reported to show river temperatures rising as much as four degrees Celsius over the next 80 years. This will increase mortality rates and perpetuate diseases.

Meanwhile, river runoff, also important to survival, will decline with fewer glaciers.

Global warming is “the number one thing affecting salmon populations,” said Aaron Hill, executive director of Watershed Watch Salmon Society.

n Habitat loss

Langer has grave concerns over the continued effort by Port of Vancouver to industrialize the banks of the Fraser River Estuary. The planned Roberts Bank Terminal II, for instance, is undergoing a review by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

While the port claims it cleans up sites along the estuary and restores others, Langer contends overall fish habitat is being lost.

Meanwhile, dredging and sea level rise are eroding Sturgeon Bank, an important home for juvenile salmon.

Langer and Fin Donnelly – the federal NDP Fisheries critic and Port Moody-Coquitlam MP - note a prohibition against the “harmful alteration, disruption or destruction of fish habitat,” informally called the HADD prohibition, was removed from law in 2012 by the federal government. This has meant fewer federal environmental reviews for industrial projects on habitat sites.

Overfishing has become such a concern that resident orcas are reported to be starving for Chinook salmon in the Salish Sea. “It’s a huge one for many salmon populations. There’s a lot of by-catch of salmon stocks. It ties into monitoring and enforcement because fishermen are asked to release by-catch but there’s no one around to monitor. There’s a lot of room for improve-

ment in how we fish for salmon,” said Hill.

Langer also said it is a primary concern.

“You have to look at diminished runs and have to ask, should there be any fishery?

Eventually the best we may have is a boutique fishery and recreation fishery and indigenous fishery,” said Langer.

Simon Fraser University biologist Michael Price published research this month showing the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is falling behind on monitoring salmon-bearing streams.

“Monitoring efforts have steadily declined since the mid-‘80s,” said Price.

“In order to assess biological health, the fundamental data is from returning spawners. What are their trends over time?” asked Price.

“There’s inadequate visits to spawning streams to determine [salmon] health,” said Price.

Langer said Department of Fisheries and Oceans has been “gutted” in the past 15 years. This year, the federal Liberal government promised to reverse this trend with its $1.5 billion Ocean Protections Plan.

Steveston fishermen are very vocal about their opposition to open net fish farming.

“Everyone’s been complaining but it doesn’t seem to do any good,” said fisherman Gus Jacobson.

he eighth-annual Steveston Dragon Boat Festival kicks off this Saturday with an estimated 2,000 athletes from 72 teams competing in the water.

And with about 15,000 spectators expected to line the shores of the Fraser River, this year’s festival will likely be bigger and better than ever.

“It will be a big party for everyone,” said Ann Phelps, general manager of the festival. “We have various high-quality performances all day long, hot food available on the site and other activities. People are going to have a great time.”

Phelps said all programs are designed to promote diversity and inclusiveness while also paying homage to the ancient activity of dragon boating, which has its roots in Chinese culture.

Apart from local teams, there will also be teams coming from Washington State, Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.

Phelps told the Richmond News the races this year are going to be competitive, as some of the nation’s best paddlers will be going head to head.

“We have nine paddlers from the junior team of the Canadian National Dragon Boat team to join us this year,” she said. “They just came back from France. Some will paddle in the game; some will join us as volunteers.”

There is a large range of paddlers competing in different categories. In addition to elite teams, some paddlers will participate in the event for the first time, such as a team composed of paddlers from vulnerable groups.

“It’s a team made up of refugees, low-income immigrant youth, high-risk youth from Surrey and participants in Kid Safe from Vancouver,” said Alexis Gall, senior manager at Dragon Boat BC.

He noted that it is the first time this team has participated in the festival.

“The members are from the Philippines, India, Eritrea, Venezuela, China, Ethiopia, El Salvador, Vietnam and Iraq.”

In all, 72 teams will compete in 80 races between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Each one lasts one-and-a-half to three minutes, according to Phelps.

Non-athletes who want to try dragon boat paddling can also get involved, as there will be two dragon boats with 20 seats each for the audience to try out.

“They are always very popular, so come early to sign up,” said Phelps.

There will also be dragon boat building projects and heritage boats on the shore to showcase the process behind the tradition.

The festival takes place at an open site at Steveston Village, between the Britannia Heritage Shipyards (at Westwater Drive and Railway Avenue) and Imperial Landing.

He said DFO should allow seals to be killed by fisherman as is done in the U.S. With an abundant population, public outcry is misplaced, he said.

“I can say that I’m very excited next for the remodel and renovation that my restaurant is about to undergo,”notes restaurant manager Jason Cebuliak.

merican Gods by Neil Gaiman was first published in 2001. I can’t believe it has taken me this long to hear about it and read it. My only defence is that in 2001, I still didn’t speak or read English.

American Gods is a brilliant book, with magnificent characters and amazing descriptions. I strongly recommend mend you listen to the tenth-anniversary edition audiobook of it.

It is a full-cast audiobook, meaning that each character is read by a different actor, which adds even more texture and depth to the storytelling.

The book follows the story off Shadow Moon. Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow has done his time and is days awayy from his release when he gets the devastating news that Laura, his na beloved wife, has been killed in car accident along with Shadow’s best friend.

With his life in pieces and nothing left to lose, Shadow accepts an offer from the mysterious Mr. Wednesday.

Mr. Wednesday says that he is nothing more than a common and ordinary con man in need of a driver and some muscle – but there is nothing either common or ordinary about Mr. Wednesday.

The job he offers Shadow will lead him into the midst of a supernatural gathering of gods, old and new, trying to survive in America.

There is a storm coming, a war of epic proportions, and Shadow finds himself in the middle of it with no escape.

On the surface, this book is a fantasy, rich in detail and intriguing charac characters, but scratch that surface yo will find a book filled with and you metap metaphor and complex ideas and symb symbols.

It is well known in B.C. now that children (adopted or biological) and spouses (married or “marriage-like” for at least 2 years) of a deceased person are legally eligible to seek a variation of the deceased person’s Will. There are today in my opinion more of these cases being litigated than ever before. There are several reasons, including the tremendous increases in the value of B.C. real estate over the years. Any person who owns real estate, especially in the lower mainland, no longer has a “small” Estate. Depending how that Estate is distributed in the deceased’s Will, the eligible persons now have a larger Estate (than would have been the case say 30 years ago) to dispute. If they feel that their portion of the Estate is too small or if they are disinherited, they are seemingly more likely to seek a variation.

Memories of English Bay come flooding in NADINEJONES A Senior’s Moment

W

hen Richmond teenagers take the Canada Line and the bus to swim at English Bay, little do they know how the place has changed since I was a teen in l940.

There were two lifeguards on the alert – one was called “Shadow” and all the girls were madly in love with him. His real name was Bill Economy (now deceased).

The big raft with the slide, Big Bertha by name, was towed around from Coal Harbour every summer.

There was a small aquarium, above the beach access changing rooms, owned by Ivar, of “Ivar’s Acres of Clams” fame in Seattle.

Across from Beach Avenue — between Davie Street and Beach Avenue — on Denman Street, was a den of iniquity (according to my mother, who forbid me to find out) named Alec the Greek’s, a hangout for guys.

We innocent young girls all thought it was most likely illicit gambling that was going on.

It was intriguing but “nice” girls didn’t enter to find out.

Every Sunday, an older man brought, on a very long leash, his pet Kinkajou, which was brown and looked like a long-legged weasel.

It climbed a telephone pole and then went out onto the high wires above our heads and was very deft at crisscrossing the wires to our amazement and worry that it would fall.

In the little fenced triangle park bordered

by Beach Avenue, Denman Street and Morton Avenue, fishermen appeared at daybreak looking for dew worms as bait. The worms were huge, fat and eight inches or more in length.

I lived on Morton Avenue which now boasts the “Dine in the Sky” advertisement on the roof of the Sylvia Hotel. The street was named for John Morton, who, with two men named William Hailstone and Samuel Brighouse, were known as the Three Greenhorn Englishmen.

Morton was the first white man to walk from English Bay to Coal Harbour. One day, he met a local Indian carrying a lump of coal and in sign and body language, asked him where he got it.

He was interested because his father in England was a potter and Morton knew

where there was coal, there was clay.

The Indian signalled for Morton to follow him. They set out in a dugout canoe from what is now Coal Harbour, passed Siwash Rock and on to Third Beach where indeed Morton found clay.

The tide had turned and they couldn’t return the same way, so paddled around Second Beach to English Bay and Morton followed the Indian back to Coal Harbour on a path which is now Denman Street.

Thus, he became the first white man to enjoy that route.

Morton lived in a small shack right next to what is now the Marine Building. Hailstone seems to have faded into history but Brighouse, the third of the Three Greenhorn Englishmen, is well known in Richmond with at least a former racetrack and Canada Line terminal named in his honour.

There are many stories about the Three Greenhorn Englishmen in Vancouver’s interesting history and I’m sure that someone in 2060 will be writing about how things have changed at English Bay since they were a teenager.

Food firm helps parents pack school lunch

At that time, although she loved cooking, as a mother of two, Lechner found herself too busy to cook every day.

So she made family meals in advance, packed them and put them in the freezer.

“I thought if I found it difficult to cook every day, other parents must feel the same. So I came up with the idea to start Batch Food.”

Lechner received a business permit from the city, a health permit from health authorities and started Batch Food in Richmond. All the staff working there, she said, are required to have a B.C. Food Safe Certificate.

She said her company was named as such because, when it first started, “it was all in batches.”

The first item she sold was a “batch” of spaghetti sauce. Then the different types of food she offered increased to four and now there are more than 60 varieties.

“My food is nothing fancy, but (it’s) comfort food that families will eat every day. Regular food is what people like.”

One of her customers, Richmond resident and mom-of-two Jen Sibley, said she and her husband work full-time and don’t have enough hours in the day to prepare proper meals.

They have been using Lechner’s service for six years and said it has improved their fam-

“My son was a baby at that time and I was going back to work,” Sibley told the Richmond News.

“I had no time to cook, so I was looking for supplements of family meals delivered to home.

“Then I found Batch food, and I couldn’t have made it through that time without it. It feels like home-cooked food, less processed than food in the restaurants. It has saved us so much time and money and helps us eat healthily.

“We would have just eaten out all the time.

And because we didn’t have time to cook, we wasted so much food in the fridge till it expired.”

The price is, admittedly, a bit more expensive than cooking at home, but cheaper than eating out. A veggie and dip box, for example, costs $5, and a large, ground turkey chilli bowl, that serves up to four people, is $15.

When Lechner is not making food, she’s usually out grocery shopping.

“I go shopping every week and select the ingredients. I love the shopping, every time is different. Sometimes I can find something really great at a local food market and I will get very excited,” she said.

Now she and her team make and deliver 80 to 100 orders every week.

From blank wall to artistic masterpiece Public invited to watch mural – inspired by John Horton – transform Steveston Hotel

The painting depicts the historic docking of the Hudson’s Bay Company sailing ship, S.V. Titania, at Steveston’s Britannia Cannery wharf in September 1889.

Large steam tugboats were used to tow the Titania up the Fraser River to New Westminster and later to the canneries in Steveston.

This was the first time a Europe-bound vessel transported cases of canned Fraser River salmon.

The original Arrival of the S.V. Titania, a 3’ x 4’ painting by maritime painter John M. Horton, is currently on display at Richmond City Hall.

The piece was commissioned by the City of Richmond to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation.

T

o know the game is to love the game.

That’s the simple message from a Lower Mainland golf legend who is still doing his part at the age of 72 to ensure kids are learning to play and compete the right way.

Harry White has co-chaired the Junior Linkster Tour of Canada for the past 17 years but his time overseeing competitive golf for youngsters goes beyond five decades.

When Richmond native and former LPGA Tour regular Jennifer Wyatt was inducted into the B.C. Golf Hall of Fame two years ago, she credited one of White’s Junior Linkster events back in 1980 at Mylora for igniting her passion to play tournament golf.

White’s approach hasn’t changed over the years but the sport has, much to his chagrin.

“It’s actually quite annoying golf isn’t as successful as he should be,” said White during a break from teaching lessons through his Aim and Fire Golf Learning Academy at Savage Creek.

“The biggest thing for me, when I started golf, the people who were involved were all public course people. They were part of the Vancouver and District Interclub Golf Committee — the real pioneers

of golf in British Columbia.

“When you joined (public courses like) Fraserview, McCleery or Langara, you had to learn the course etiquette and rules or else you didn’t play.

That’s the way it used to be. For the last 20 years, there has been such an influx of people (into the industry) that really don’t know the game.”

That’s why White makes sure every player that participates in his Junior Linkster and Little Masters Golf events are given a simplified rule book which they need to thoroughly understand, along with their parents, before even teeing off.

White is also a stickler on pace of play — another part of the game he emphasis to his students and tour members.

He says it’s a problem at the PGA Tour level and it trickles all the way down to the recreational player.

White still marvels at watching Moe Norman play the former Canadian Tour B.C. Open at Marine Drive back in 1963. He earned the nickname “Pipeline Moe” for being one of the game’s greatest ball strikers. To this day, White’s teaching theory is based on Norman’s quick and fluid swing.

“It took about four seconds and the ball was gone. Straight as an arrow. No pork chops, just bacon strips,” smiled White. “That’s my standard and I haven’t seen anybody come close to that since.

“To me, the pace of play is what is killing golf.

I coached UBC for a couple of stints and the rounds were taking five to six hours to play.

College golf was often 36 holes in one day back then. I quit. I just couldn’t handle it anymore.

“It is so unnecessary and so counter productive.

I know how the game can be played by watching Moe and he shot three 59s including the last one when he was 63-years old.”

The 2017 Junior Linkster of Canada schedule is winding down with stops in Mission, Delta Burnaby and Coquitlam in September. The tour takes advantage of what White describes as the “some of the best public par 3 courses in the world” for its younger players.

“These are four-to-six year-old kids who literally run to every tee because they are having so much fun,” added White. “It needs to be taught to be playable and enjoyable. Not so technical.”

Keeping the game affordable has also been a priority to White. Members of the non-profit tour pay as little as $35 for 18 hole tournaments. His golf academy also offers reasonable rates.

“Harry has been doing this for 51 years and all for the right reasons,” quipped Joe Wang, who helps White manage the Junior Linkster Tour. “He wants kids to have fun and learn the game the right way.”

Courtney Vorster has gone where few girls hockey players from B.C. have gone before, never mind Richmond. The 17-year-old defenceman was selected to Hockey Canada’s U18 national team for the second straight summer following a week long camp in Calgary. Courtney was also named an alternate captain for a three-game series against the United States that concluded on Sunday in Lake Placid, NY. Richmond golfer finishes sixth at U.S. Kids World Championships Mark Booth

For the second straight year, Daniel Xu has produced a top 10 finish at the renowned U.S. Kids World Golf Championships in Pinehurst, NC. Competing in the 11-year-old division, Xu fired rounds of 72-72-75 at the Talamore Golf Club to finish at plus-3 and tied sixth in a field of 157 players.

The result was good enough for Xu to earn an exemption into the 2018 event when he will compete for the final time as a 12-yearold. In his debut in 2016, he finished eighth in the 10-year-old tournament.

The 12th annual event is hosted by the U.S. Kids Golf Foundation and held at the Pinehurst Golf Resort. In total, this year’s tournament featured over 1,500 players from 50 countries competing in boys and girls divisions.

“The event is really cool, especially the Parade of Nations when you see the flags from all the different countries being respresented,” said Xu’s coach Nathan Leonhardt. “It’s pretty special.”

It was last summer at the Richmond Country Club when Leonhardt was asked if he would be interested in coaching Xu. Back problems had forced the 32-year-old professional to step away from the course after a number of seasons on PGA Tour Canada, as well as PGA Tour China. That came after an impressive collegiate career that included captaining the men’s golf team at Johnson and Wales University in Florida.

He has enjoyed his time working with Xu and has since begun the process of becoming a CPGA teaching professional.

“With my competitive career, I think have more to offer than just being a teacher,” continued Leonhardt. “I certainly know what to expect and how to prepare yourself for these kinds of tournament.”

Xu concluded his busy summer at this week’s B.C. Bantam Boys Championships where he finished a respectable tie for 19th in the 14 and under tournament.

“The best thing about Daniel is his length off the tee,” said Leonhardt. “It’s his greatest advantage and once he finds ways to improve his short game he will be even better. His future is promising.”

Olympic Oval hosting John Dumont 3-on-3 Classic Mark Booth

he basketball community will come together Saturday at the Richmond Olympic Oval to celebrate the life of a husband, father, teammate, coach and friend who touched the lives of so many.

The second annual John Dumont 3-on-3 Classic will once again see a full schedule of teams playing in a wide range of divisions — from adult to youth.

A busy day on the courts and in the Oval courtyard, for a beer garden and barbecue, will be followed by an after party at Ceil’s. All of the event’s proceeds will go to a trust fund established for his family — wife Trixie and sons Jack, Hunter

and Cole.

With construction making Vancouver College unavailable it was initially thought this year’s tournament would have to be put on hold. Instead, it has shifted to the Oval thanks to the efforts of Richmond’s own Pasha Bains who operates his DRIVE Academy at the venue.

“With the construction going on, we didn’t think we could go ahead with it until Pasha used his relationship with the Oval. It’s really only been the last month or so that it has all come together and again the response has been impressive,” said Jeff Joseph, one of the event’s organizers and Dumont’s brother-in-law. “It looks like it will be at the Oval again next year as well before we can return (to Van-

couver College).”

John’s wife Trixie Cruz-Dumont enjoyed an outstanding high school career at Richmond High, helping the Colts win a pair of provincial titles before moving onto play for UBC. Now their sons are making a name for themselves in the high school ranks.

Jack Cruz-Dumont helped the Fighting Irish win the Lower Mainland AAAA title last spring and will be one of the top Grade 12 players in the province this coming season.

His younger brothers Hunter and Cole will be entering Grades 10 and 8 respectively.

The Dumont Classic gets underway at 10 a.m. with youth division games and concludes with the adult division final at 4 p.m.

Lacrosse standouts back east at nationals A pair of Richmond lacrosse standouts are back east trying to win national championships.

Nick Jensen is closing out his junior career at his second straight Minto Cup championship. The B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League champion Coquitlam Adanacs entered last night’s game down 2-0 to Six Nations in a best-of-five final being played in Brampton.

The defender scored in Coquitlam’s 12-7 game one loss on Tuesday. Six Nations then took game two 9-4 on Wednesday.

Jensen was dealt to the Adanacs by the Delta Islanders at the league trade deadline in early July. Last

season, he helped the Islanders win their first-ever league title by scoring in double overtime in the deciding game against Coquitlam.

Meanwhile, Dan McDermott leaves today for the President’s Cup senior “B” national championships in Six Nations.

The defender and assistant captain helped the Ladner Pioneers win their first provincial title in 10 years with a five-game series win over Royal City.

The Pioneers begin an eight game round-robin schedule on Sunday against Saskatoon. The tournament concludes with the medal games on Sept. 3.
