I

f there is one thing people like to gripe about, it’s taxes: taxes are too high; the system’s inefficient; bureaucrats are overpaid; projects are ill-conceived. ... and on it goes.

However, most of us also understand that if we want roads to drive on, garbage picked up, kids educated and the sick tended, everyone has to chip in.

It would be nice to be able to direct where our taxes go, the way we can choose our charities, but the system doesn’t work that way, nor should it.

So we grumble, pay our bill, and get on with living what is, let’s admit, a pretty good life here in Canada — thanks, in large part, to the fact we pay our taxes.

Except when we don’t.

We may complain about political pet projects, but for better or for worse, that’s how our democracy works. Once people are elected, they get to make decisions about how to spend the money they collect from us. What’s not part of the bargain is freeloaders. People who are earning good money but not paying their share.

Our front page story is about yet another appbased business, this time selling food — everything from dumplings to donuts. As with any of these unregulated businesses, there is a large “buyer beware” element. Scoring a bag of dumplings with no labelling from the back of a stranger’s car is enough to make some queasy, even if it is at half the price.

But food safety may not be the biggest concern.

All of these online businesses depend heavily on customer reviews. No one would stay in business long if their customers were getting food poisoning.

What is problematic is the “cash only.”

Clearly, no one’s paying taxes. Moreover, no one seems to be doing anything about it.

The Vancouver Coastal Health Authority says it doesn’t inspect operations that don’t have business licences (which the operators we talked to admitted they don’t). The city said all businesses require a licence, but bylaw officers only follow up if someone complains, which it appears no one is doing.

So, what, we just leave it at that?

It could be argued that it costs more than it’s worth to track down these self-described “small” operators. And, indeed, when we hear stories about the super wealthy sheltering billions of dollars in Panamanian tax havens, it seems a bit ridiculous to chase down some Joe driving around with dumplings in the back of his car. But some of these businesses may be bigger than we think.

A new study from McGill University looking into Airbnbs found the quaint notion of folks renting out their home when they’re away for the weekend is, for the most part, not the reality. Rather, the bulk of revenue earned through Airbnb goes to large operators with multiple listings.

But regardless of size, when it comes to taxes, there’s a principle to consider. If I feel like a chump for paying my taxes while others don’t, the integrity of the system unravels. Granted, enforcement is pricey, but a loss of confidence in our system costs more. And, if one of those tasty dumplings does turn your stomach, who you gonna call? A doctor? The hospital?

Good luck with that if no one pays their taxes.

Snail mail taxes senior

Tractor cash could have been better spent

Dear Editor, In late July, I received a letter from the City of Richmond saying I hadn’t paid my taxes and a healthy fine was attached to my assessment.

I had used the community mailbox at Blundell Centre to mail in my taxes and form a few days before the dewadline. The city never received it. I didn’t find out until Aug. 2 when it was cashed. It was lost somewhere at Richmond City Hall, the post office, or who knows where.

One of the drivers who pick up mail there said it is picked up every day, so what happened to it?

It is bad enough as a senior to not get any grant for the first time because they conveniently jumped our assessment just before the taxes came out.

Now I have to pay a five-per-cent fine on the assessment amount.

I have shown the city a copy of the cheque and form that was in the envelope, but they would not honour it.

The post office only indicated they appreciated hearing from me, but not to expect a response.

The letter was not tracked as I now realize it should have been, but I usually just drop any letter in the mailbox and expect it to get to its destination in reasonable time. I don’t expect it to take a month within the city.

Now that I know my letter did get to city hall a month later and has been cashed, who should pay the fine?

Somehow I don’t feel it should be me.

Does everyone get their letters tracked before dropping them in the mail?

Dear Editor, Re: “Shiny new tractor brings independence,” Column, The News, Aug. 2.

Did the city really spent about $50,000 on a huge tractor for work on a 3/4acre lot?

I was a volunteer a few years ago on The Sharing Farm.

What for and when will the tractor be used? Threequarters of the money spent could have bought an amazing amount of food for the food bank over many years. The rest could have paid for an outside contractor. Who made the decision on this purchase, I wonder?

Why wait until 2022 to deal with gridlock?

Dear Editor, Better managing our resources is key to reducing the traffic gridlock at the Massey Tunnel. Before we consider building a $4-billion mega-bridge, let’s find creative ideas that better utilize our existing infrastructure.

Coast Mountain Bus Company is testing Double Decker buses in October to see if they are feasible for the express commuter routes.These buses will run from Surrey to the Brighouse station and have much higher capacity than regular buses. It will be exciting to see how this pilot project works out.

Other creative ideas that we could be considering are banning trucks during rush hour and opening the ports 24 /7. This could result in 30-per-cent more capacity at rush hour. Recently I counted 44 trucks lined up southbound at the Massey Tunnel when only one lane was open. This slows down commuter traffic and creates terrible backlogs.

Reducing traffic gridlock could also be achieved if trucks would be assigned alternative days to use the tunnel, such as odd days or even days. This could potentially cut the truck traffic in half. Incentives for trucks travelling at night could also benefit the truckers with increased profits and reduce daytime traffic as well.

We should go back to the previous minis-

ter of transportation Kevin Falcon’s original plan to buy 100 new buses. This would attract more transit users and would result in less single-occupancy vehicles. Millions were spent on the express bus lanes, but they are under-utilized to this day.

It is time to work harder to put more people in cars and have less single-occupancy cars. “Ride Share” is under-utlilized, but that could change if we put more resources into supporting that program.

Another option could be building passenger stops instead of bus stops, where a driver could pick up additional passengers to get through the tunnel on an adhoc basis, dropping them off at other bus stops or other convenient locations.

The Massey Tunnel was built in two years and the technology exists today to build a submerged tunnel in sections and quickly construct a twinned tunnel, so why wait until 2022 for a mega-bridge when better options are here today?

Whether it is double-decker buses, reduced truck traffic, fewer singleoccupancy vehicles, or more buses, let’s get creative and work together to make everyone’s commute quicker and more enjoyable.

Last week, in a publication called Mortgage Broker News, it was stated that vacation property in B.C. is becoming far more popular. Properties on Okanagan Lake and on the Gulf Islands are particularly popular, not only as “summer homes” but as places to live in year round.

For example, young families are choosing to live in these locations rather than in a city, for various reasons. If you are looking to purchase a recreational property, there are no limitations and they can be “principal residences” for tax purposes (subject as usual to the size of the property, presently 1.2 acres).

But do some planning. First, if you plan on say, doing some farming, which is popular among some people, make sure it does not affect your principal residence designation, given it is possible you will be earning income from it.

Also, do the title planning. If you are a couple, you may or may not want to be registered on title as Joint Tenants (you may want to be Tenants in Common, especially if you are a couple in a subsequent relationship).

Signs with two or more languages would forge better connections Dear Editor, Perhaps it would help us clarify some of the issues that are at play in the debate over Chinese-only signage if we looked at the situation through the eyes of anthropologists – the people who arguably understand the workings of societies and cultures better than anyone else.

For example: Renowned anthropologist Edward T. Hall offers that cultures are a complex of related or interrelating systems, and language or languages are among the systems that are used to foster or reinforce the culture’s core identity and meaning – the key terms here being related and interrelated.

If there are a diversity of systems (different languages), it is to the culture’s benefit to ensure that each, in some way and to some degree, is “reflected” in the others – one of the undergirding principles, it could be argued, of an integrated multicultural society such as ours.

Simply put: Signage that carries two or more commonly used languages (Chinese and English and/or French) fosters and encourages greater relationships between and integration of diverse parts of the general culture, but Chinese-only signage does not.

When Chinese and English are set beside each other, they, by way of offering common

information, are thereby “reflected” in each other, and this is a core issue for those of us who view Chinese-only signage as a contradiction of the principles outlined in Canada’s official policy for building a multi-cultural society.

Hall would argue that if there is no “reflection” there will be no relationship, and if there is no relationship, there will be no integration.

The Institute for Sustainable Food Systems (ISFS) at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) in Richmond has developed

a searchable, online database of municipal food system policies in B.C. It’s hoped the new database will help local governments and any other interested stakeholders easily cross-reference existing policies on everything from urban farm business licences to

agricultural zoning.

Shooting victim ‘targeted,’ known to police: RCMP ALANCAMPBELL Staff Reporter

T

he 44-year-old victim of Tuesday morning’s shooting is known to police and the incident appears to have been targeted, according to Richmond RCMP. Patrol officers, responding to several calls of shots being fired, arrived at the scene on Waterton Drive – near No. 3 Road and Steveston Highway – within minutes and located a male suffering from gunshot wounds inside a residence in the relatively quiet family neighbourhood.

The victim, a man, was taken to hospital for treatment and, as of Wednesday morning, was in stable condition.

He is known to Richmond RCMP and the “shooting appears to be targeted,” said police.

“The victim has no known ties to gangs or organized crime.The exact motive for the shooting remains unknown at this time,” said RCMP. “Based on information gathered through our investigation, it appears the shooting was targeted,” said acting Cpl. Adriana Peralta.

“We want to reassure the public that this was not a random act and that the risk to their personal safety is low.”

According to witnesses, a black hatchbackstyle sedan was seen speeding away from the area. The vehicle’s connection to the shooting remains under investigation.

The Richmond News earlier reported how the tree-lined street in south Richmond was turned into a crime scene Tuesday morning (Aug. 7) after the incident. Richmond RCMP cordoned off the area around a detached home on Waterton Drive at Malahat Avenue — close to No. 3 Road and Steveston Highway.

The shooting took place in the 7800 block of Waterton Drive shortly before 6 a.m.

A resident, who didn’t want to give her name, told the News she heard some kind of noise early in the morning, but “didn’t think more about it” until police taped off the street.

Others told media they spotted police activity at the home several times over the last year.

Mounties swoop in after armed robbery Alan Campbell

A

rapid response from Richmond RCMP has led to two suspects being arrested following an armed robbery at a convenience store.

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Thursday, the RCMP received a call about a robbery at a store on the corner of No. 4 and Williams roads, understood to be the Mac’s store.

According to the store employee, a male had allegedly entered the shop brandishing a box-cutter and demanded money.

The employee complied with the demand and the suspect was then reported to have exited the store, before escaping in a waiting vehicle.

Once the vehicle drove away, the store employee called police.

The employee was able to provide a detailed description of both the vehicle and alleged suspects and, based on this information, patrol officers from numerous Richmond units, as well as officers from the Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU), flooded the area.

Within minutes, a patrol officer located the alleged suspect vehicle and observed one of the suspects running out of the area. This male was quickly apprehended and taken into custody by the sharp-eyed officer. The second suspect remained in the vehicle and departed the area, but was

arrested shortly afterward by officers from the IRSU. The store employee was not injured during the course of the incident.

“Despite reporting having just been robbed, the store employee was able to remain calm and provide detailed information to our call takers,” said acting Cpl. Adriana Peralta.

“This information was vital and directly resulted in the quick apprehension of both alleged suspects”.

Richmond RCMP is seeking witnesses who may have observed the events leading up to the robbery.

The BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) has initiated an inquiry into BC Hydro’s Site C project, as directed by the Provincial Government in Order-in-Council (OIC) 244 on August 2, 2017.

Unlicensed food market grows Popular website and app driving people to buy products in parking lots DAISYXIONG Staff Reporter

A

n underground food market is quietly growing in Richmond, where people sell and buy food, cooked or raw, from other individuals on the street or at a parking lot.

Two types of models have recently hit the food-sharing scene.

One called “group buy” allows a group of people to access factory-made or imported food sold by individuals; another one called “private kitchens” allows people to purchase food that is cooked at home.

Food-sharing website Weee! and Wechat, a popular Chinese messaging app, have become the major platforms for this black market.

Some in the community are pleased with the convenience that such food sharing apps offer.

However, authorities warn that those unlicensed food services are illegal and put food safety at risk.

“I can find food products or services that I don’t get from the supermarket or restaurant. I know a lot of friends using those services too,” said Dorothy Yue, who has been purchasing food from Richmond sellers using these platforms on a regular basis.

An undercover Richmond News reporter joined a Wechat group called “Affordable Seafood” with 120 group members from Richmond.

The owner of the group updates food sale information every week, including information on a large range of food (up to 30 different kinds), like seafood, dumplings, dry goods, desserts, milk powder, etc.

Group members place the order on social media, then the seller goes to his source to get the food with the exact number of orders, and delivers it to the consumers, collecting tax-free cash.

One pound of mantis shrimp is sold at $22 and 50 pork dumplings at $24.

You can also order unusual things such as 235 grams of “sea dog” (a type of seal) penis, which some consider nutritious, for $290.

A Richmond News reporter ordered a bag of frozen dumplings and met with a man who call himself “David” in a parking lot at Lansdowne Centre on a Wednesday afternoon.

David told the Richmond News that he has been in this “business” for a year and has had hundreds of active customers

“But the ‘business’ is more competitive now because more people are doing this (selling food on Wechat).”

He said that with “special connections” to some local factories, he can get food sold outside of the supermarket for competitive prices, “for example, the dumplings I’m selling are usually only for restaurants.”

Some sellers provide food that’s claimed to be “freshly imported directly from abroad” in social media groups they started.

The frozen dumplings are packed in a plastic bag with no name tags, ingredients, expiry date, factory name, or a receipt.

“I can guarantee the quality. If anything goes wrong, call me,” he said.

When asked about business permits and tax, David said “I don’t make much money, just helping out.”

Along with grocery and seafood shopping, “private kitchens” are also popular on Wechat. This works by people cooking food at home and then selling their fare on social media. Desserts, fried dishes, soups, hot pot and seafood are often delivered to homes.

Colin was a chef at a Richmond-based “private kitchen” specializing in desserts from 2015 to earlier this year. At first he had opened a restaurant but this was closed after five months and so he turned it into a “private kitchen.”

His home recipe made his “business” one of the most popular private dessert “kitchens” in Richmond. Customers had to order it in advance, according to Colin.

He told our reporter that he used to have about 1,600 active customers and sold 15 to 20 homemade desserts per day.

“Compared to a restaurant, ‘private kitchens’ are more flexible for the operators, the cost is lower, and it is quicker to get started,” said Colin.

Many operators like the fact that they can pause their business for a few months to go abroad. Colin put his business on hold after he started full-time work.

Some private kitchen operators were formerly professional restaurant chefs. Yiren Wang is a friend of a chef who started a “private kitchen” in January, with many customers from Richmond.

Wang said her friend was a professional chef and used to work in a restaurant. “He likes the freedom coming from no regulations and complicated inspection procedures, and he makes much more money now than in the restaurant, especially without paying the tax.”

Unregulated food services have alarmed authorities because they put consumers at risk.

“Anyone requires a business licence if they are operating in Richmond, in terms of offering delivery or using a Richmond location for manufacturing, distribution or office space,” said city spokesperson Ted Townsend in an email to Richmond News.

Vancouver Coastal Health said they are aware of the black food market in Richmond, and that the biggest challenge is food safety.

“If you purchase food from an individual rather than a business, you have no idea where they get their food from, how the food is handled and processed, where the food is stored, and what’s happening in their kitchen,” said Anna D’Angelo, senior media relations officer at Vancouver Coastal Health.

However, despite the food safety risks, food share businesses are nearly impossible to track down and inspect, which creates a grey area for them.

Vancouver Coastal Health said that they will investigate malpractice after receiving, but “no one is responsible for inspecting unlicensed business.”

The Food Inspection Agency also said that they are only inspecting conditions of commercial food businesses.

Wang, however, said that the food sharing services are selfregulated.

“Because it’s not made public, word of mouth is everything the business is based on, so you have to provide food with good quality.”

But Colin admitted that there are operators whose food safety situation is concerning. He also noted that for inexperienced chefs, operating a food business, “does come with challenges like food storage, freshness maintenance, transportation time, etc.”

“The CRA has 35 underground economy specialized audit teams across the country with advanced training in identifying unreported and under-reported income,” noted the email.

Regardless, business appears to be booming.

Although, if given the choice, Colin said if licences for “private kitchens” were available, he would consider applying.

But that’s unlikely to happen.

Operators would first need to get a business permit from the city, and then install a second kitchen at home and meet all the criteria of Vancouver Coastal Health, which includes being subjected to an annual inspection.

“There are many limiting elements while considering issuing work permits for home-run restaurants, like the traffic it may create for the neighbourhood, the noise level, etc.,” said Townsend.

Therefore, it seems these kinds of food-sharing services will remain in the shadows of Richmond for the foreseeable future.

n a bid to break down stereotypes, teams of Richmond seniors are going to be presenting anti-ageism workshops to university students.

The new project, led by Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), seeks to dispel some of the negativity surrounding old age, by giving seniors a stronger voice.

Funded in part by the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, the project is called “Fighting Ageism Through Education and Volunteerism.”

The education component will happen on university campuses, where teams of senior volunteers — who are also developing the content — will present six workshops to the students in the fall.

“Seniors represent a growing proportion of Richmond’s population, but their opportunities to contribute are often limited, due to a false narrative that they’re frail or out of touch,” said Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of RCRG. “The older adults volunteering for this project are smart, knowledgeable and engaged in community life. They, themselves, offer proof that the negative stereotypes aren’t true.”

The federal government’s Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Jean-Yves Duclos, said the program “helps

enlighten university students about the vital and active role seniors play in Canadian society.”

In addition to educating youth about the adverse impact of ageism, the project will give them a chance to interact with seniors on a regular basis — as volunteers.

The idea is that, by volunteering to help seniors, students will gain real life experience with older adults, which will further break down negative stereotypes.

“Students will be able to assist seniors as volunteer drivers, friendly visitors, grocery shoppers, and more,” added Gavsie.

“This project, overall, is a wonderful opportunity to fight ageism, strengthen ties between youth and seniors, and encourage volunteerism.”

Things have undoubtedly changed since Rose Lane and her Richmond Secondary class of ’57 graduated 60 years ago.

But the memories still burn bright in her head and, most likely, that of her 109 fellow surviving graduates, many of whom will turn out next week to mark six decades since successfully completing high school.

“There might be a few of them still out there who haven’t heard about next week or have forgotten. They can still get in touch and come along.”

ore than 300 children and teenagers gathered at the Olympic Oval on Aug. 6 to create artworks for the fifth-annual Youth World Cup Live Painting Competition.

The competition was hosted by the Richmond-based Canada Youth Arts Development Foundation with the support of UNICEF, to promote the creativity of youth and an awareness of children suffering from global poverty.

“There is no border in art. We hope the competition to be a platform for the youths from different culture and regions that have a love for art to communicate with each other,” said Ariel Lang, spokesperson for the foundation.

More than 20,000 young painters, aged four to 25 worldwide, took part in the competition by submitting their paintings to the Richmond committee.

More than 300 contestants from nine countries appeared at the Olympic Oval to draw a painting on the spot within three-and-a-half hours, on the theme of Friendship, Environmental Protection, or Dreams.

Overall, $24,082 was raised through the event for UNICEF to build over 90 “schools in a box.”

These boxes contain all essentials for a teacher to provide education for up to 40 students in emergency situations.

Site preparation for a $350-million, 170-acre industrial development in Richmond – said to be the largest industrial park to be built in Metro Vancouver – has begun, but construction won’t start on its one-million-square-foot Phase 1 until the first tenants have signed on.

“We aren’t building on speculation,” confirmed Tom Land, CEO and president of Montrose Properties Ltd., of its Richmond Industrial Centre (RIC), though he concedes it wouldn’t be much of a gamble in one of Canada’s biggest and tightest industrial zones.

Richmond has 37.3 million square feet of industrial real estate, the most of any Metro Vancouver municipality, but only 2.1 per cent of it is vacant, according to Colliers International.

Richmond biotechnology firm is helping the Netherlands in its fight against HIV by recently launching the company’s advanced HIV home test kit there.

Biolytical Laboratories, at 13351 Commerce Parkway in north east Richmond, is a world leader in HIV testing. The company’s INSTI HIV test was licensed by Health Canada in 2005; to date, 14 million tests have been shipped to 59 countries across the world.

This INSTI HIV self-test kit launched in the Netherlands allows users to test HIV with one drop of blood and to get the result instantly with a greater than 99 per cent accuracy rate. People there can purchase the

ing products require a 15 to 20 minutes wait after the test is conducted for a result to be produced. And it takes several days or weeks in the case of laboratory tests.

“Every time we demonstrate INSTI, people are amazed at how quickly they can get the result. A big problem is the anxiety while waiting,” said Veslemes.

She adds that some people conduct the test in the washroom, in the kitchen, in their car, or somewhere they can’t stay for very long. Being able to get the result on the spot greatly increases the convenience of the test.

“It also makes it more efficient for health care professionals to test more people.

They can test one person after the other without waiting.”

Biolytical Laboratories hopes that their test kit can reach as many people in the world as possible. “People get tested, then they can get treated if needed,” said Veslemes. HIV is now highly treatable and those with the virus often go on to live a long and healthy life.

The biggest barrier to expanding the availability of the kits is red tape. “Many years ago there were controversies around DIY pregnancy tests. There were questions like if we should give women and families the right to be the first one to know they are pregnant.

“We have found very similar questions come up with HIV self-testing. What will happen if people find themselves to be positive? Some countries are more conservative and are waiting for other countries to be the first.”

Veslemes said the company is working on making INSTI HIV test available and accessible to more people in the world. She hopes that one day HIV self-testing will be ubiquitous. “HIV testing is the foundation of the fight against the disease.”

170-acre development to be one of largest in Metro Vancouver history Aside from the Richmond Industrial Centre (RIC), more than three million square feet of competing space is either proposed or under construction in Richmond. Much of it is speculative, but none of the 20 other projects are on the scale of Montrose’s first industrial play.

“It is certainly ambitious,” Land, said of Richmond, but he noted there are several factors in its favour.

First, Montrose has owned the site for 35 years through its Ecowaste Industries Ltd. subsidiary in an area where raw industrial land can cost $1 million an acre.

Second, it has partnered with Omicron, one of the largest and most respected industrial developers in Western Canada.

“Our partners share our vision of a long-horizon investment,” Land said. “We are in a very comfortable space.”

RIC will be a build-to-suit development, where each of its 12 buildings will be custom-finished for tenants.

Phase 1 will have two 500,000-sq.-ft. buildings, and Land expects them to be claimed as logistics warehouses, likely for the retail sector, and probably by single tenants.

he Hogler Family in Richmond has the magic touch! They’re a fourth-generation farm family whose Richmond Country Farms Market, Country Meadows Golf Course and Grille Restaurant are known for delivering excellent quality at old-fashioned prices.

And now the Hogler clan has added another jewel to the crown. They’ve branched out even more and hopped on the wine wagon with their Country Vines Winery. They’re situated on the east side of Country Farm, where Lucas Hogler, son of owner Harry, is the vineyard manager and winemaker.

It’s the only winery in Richmond that makes estate wines produced from grapes grown on the family’s Richmond vineyards off Steveston Highway, just east of Highway 99.

I recently sat down with Country Vines’ knowledgeable and passionate wine consultant, Eric Urquhart, and tasted the estate wines. Urquhart told me the vineyards behind the farmer’s market are 50 per cent pinot gris and 50 per cent Schonberger. This year will be the fourth vintage using their grapes.

My favourite is the 2016 Country Vines Pinot Gris ($16.99).

“The pinot gris came in perfectly ripe, almost a red grape, yielding a very ripe, rich version with a peachy rose colour, really ripe apricot honey and a little red fruit wandering through there,” said Urquhart.

“Because of the way we made it, it actually has weight. This is not thin pinot gris.”

Urquhart says, “The pinot gris will go with

any number of seafood dishes, the lovely spot prawns available here are wonderful. It goes really well with soft cheeses like brie and Camembert. You can have it with a little boccocini mozzarella salad.”

There is another 100 per cent, varietal pinot gris, the 2015 Back Forty ($15.99).

Back Forty is an old farming term, referring to the 40 acres at the back of a property, in this case, where the vineyard is.

“There is a small lot production of pure pinot gris put into second-use, lightly toasted barrels. It provided a little bit of butterscotch and a little weight in the background and it tastes like a very nice pinot grigio, not big flavours, but really pleasant with a nice finish.”

The other estate whites are blends which include Schonberger.

“The production we get here is so intensely floral and tropical that it probably would be too intense for people, but it makes an amazing wine to blend with, especially in the 2016 Back Forty White and the Sipping Pretty ($17.99). The 2016 version of Sipping Pretty has 40 per cent Schonberger and then we blend in our stainless Chardonnay, and some Riesling and some Gewurztraminer and a bit of Viognier. It’s an awful tasty Heinz 57,” Urquhart boasts.

At the close of my interview, Urquhart gave one more reason to visit. “We have a patio... and we sell wines by the glass or we will sell you a bottle of wine and you can share with friends and you can bring your own picnic.”

When a Hearing Specialist told Derrick Highet he had a hearing problem the businessman’s first reaction was actually one of relief.

MVP lacrosse season for “free agent” Ng Mark Booth

eagan Ng proved be quite the “free agent” pick-up for the Coquitlam Adanacs this season.

The soon-to-be Grade 8 student at McMath Secondary grew up playing on top boys box lacrosse teams in the Richmond Roadrunners organization. Once Ng reached Bantam age, her parents felt it was the right time to cross over and play girls.

That was easier said than done.

The Roadrunners now have girls teams at the Novice and Pee Wee levels but nothing beyond that yet. The Lower Mainland Lacrosse Commission initially assigned Ng to a team in Delta. However, with a limited roster of just nine players, including seven first-years, it quickly became apparent Ng’s skill set required her to play at the Bantam “A” level.

There were just five teams participating in the top tier in the Lower Mainland this past season and all were at least an hour away from her Steveston home. The Adanacs ended up winning what proved to be the Ng “lottery.”

“We didn’t get to choose where she got to play. It was more like a lucky draw,” explained her dad Greg. “It’s the same for all girls that don’t have a team to play for in their home association. It was tough for us getting her to practices and games. I had to get my parents to help or whomever was around, even to leave work early sometimes.”

Coquitlam finished with a 9-6-1 league record then thrived at last month’s provincial championships — winning gold thanks to a big 4-2 upset of unbeaten Ridge Meadows in the gold medal game.

The heavy pre-tournament favourite had gone 16-0-0 in league play and coasted into the final, including an earlier 6-1 win over the Adanacs.

Ng played a large part in the championship run, earning the tournament’s most valuable player award.

“We had great teamwork all season and really believed in ourselves in the final,” said Teagan. “We got the early lead on them and that was the big thing. They hadn’t been in that situation all season.”

Her lacrosse season didn’t end there. A couple of weeks later she was off to Halifax as a member of Team B.C. that competed at the Bantam Female National Lacrosse Championships.

Ontario and B.C. finished first and second respectively in round-robin play to advance to the gold medal game. It would be their third meeting of the tournament, having split a pair of 4-2 games.

Ng opened the scoring just 54 seconds in but it would be B.C.’s only lead of the game.

Ontario responded with three unanswered goals to close out the opening period and went on to win 5-3.

Ng used her excellent speed to lead B.C. in tournament scoring with 10 goals and five assists. It wasn’t what the provincial team coaching staff would have expected three months earlier when she showed up for tryouts.

“She was small and skinny compared to the other girls, especially as one of the few first-year Bantams. Then they saw her play and realized this was what it is all about,” said Greg.

Teagan has been asked to play field lacrosse this fall but is putting that version of the sport on hold for now. Instead, her focus will be on continuing to play Metro level soccer for her dad’s team. She is also looking forward to her first-year of high school sports at McMath, including basketball and track.

As far as box lacrosse goes, there is no certainty Ng will return to Coquitlam for her second season at the Bantam level.

Again, it will be up to the league to decide where she plays with parity certainly being a factor. The Ngs know of some players who have played for four different associations in as many years.

“Who knows. Someone might get a provincial MVP thrown on their team,” laughed Greg.

Roadrunners win USBOXLA Nationals in California

R

ichmond Roadrunners Novice Advanced lacrosse team capped an outstanding season in grand style by capturing gold at the USBOXLA Nationals in San Jose, California last weekend.

Competing in the A1 Division, the Roadrunners defeated Mad Dog Lacrosse 6-5 in the championship game. The outcome came right down to the wire after the Mad Dogs pulled within a goal in the final minute of play.

Richmond produced earlier wins over four other American teams — The Denver Elite, The California All Stars, The Marin Wolves and Team Superstar Connecticut.

They went 3-0-1 in round-robin play to earn the number two playoff seed.

Richmond then got past Delta (7-0) and Ridge Meadows (2-1) in the playoffs before falling to a powerhouse squad from Orangeville, ON. The success at the highest level for this age group is something Richmond Lacrosse hasn’t seen for sometime. The team has played together for the past two seasons and many of them have been in the box lacrosse program since they were four.

Half the roster also plays field lacrosse and the other half plays ice hockey in the fall and winter.

“These are just good all around atheltes,” explained Sherwin Quilay, a member of the team’s coaching staff. “We practice four to five days a week and spend a lot of time conditioning.

“The parents are a very tight knit group that have come together because of the boys. We thank all of them who were able to attend this special trip.”

The team includes: Josh Mantle, Ryan Kump, Chayton Basanti, Ryan Lin, Cohen Koldenhof, Caleb Jang, Kristopher Fournier, Jamie Hikida, Colby Quilay, Kaleb Insley, Koji Okuyama, Owen Carnahan, Kaden Ng, and Jack Wallace.

Dan Wallace and Jason Jang round out the coaching staff. Audrey Jang was the team manager.

’05 Islanders capture silver at provincial championships

R

ichmond 2005 Islanders wrapped up an outstanding season with a silver medal finish at Softball B.C.’s U12B Provincial Championships in Maple Ridge.

The Islanders went undefeated in roundrobin play — producing wins over Kelowna Heat, Ridge Meadows Rage ’05, Central Vancouver Island Rage and South Surrey White Rock Thunder ’05 to earn the number two seed for the playoff round.

The girls faced Thunder ’05 in the opening playoff game and won convincingly 13-5.

It was a much tighter affair against the Coquitlam ’05 Classics with plenty of excellent defence by both teams. The international tiebreaker rule was needed and Richmond squeezed out an exciting 4-3 victory.

That set the stage for a showdown with unbeaten and top seed Langley Xtreme — considered by many as the favourites heading into the tournament.

Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, the Islanders’ bats came to life to take a 4-2 lead. Langley responded to tie the game in its half of the inning and eventually jumped ahead in a 6-5 win to lock up a spot in the gold medal game.

Richmond squared off with Coquitlam again and came through with a dominating 8-1 victory to advance to the final.

The Islanders continued the momentum in the championship game, jumping to an early 3-0 lead. The Xtreme answered with four of their own and later added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth en route to a 7-4 victory.

The Islanders battled from the start, worked hard and never gave up but just couldn’t come up with enough to close the gap.

This second-year team has much to be proud of. The girls showed remarkable improvement during the regular season, securing gold medal tournament wins and playing hard to win the District playdowns.

It was an impressive journey topped off by a well-earned provincial silver medal.

The team includes: Aliyah Chase, Scotia Chow, Marley Goodhew, Caitlin Kippan, Lindsay Lim, Manisha Mann, Abby Mischke, Rylee Sagert, Paige Sever, Izabel Taylor, Madison Wong and Caeli Yamanaka.

The coaches are Michelle Akizuki, Kelly Sagert, Emily Yee, Laura Booth and Alex Lowe.

Blaze complete perfect Summer League run

he Delta Blaze have completed a perfect regular season run in Richmond Adult Soccer Association’s Summer League First Division play.

The Blaze edged the Vancouver Greencaps 1-0 for their 12th consecutive win — marking the first time in league history a team has won every match.

They now move on to face the Rinos Originals in the semi-finals of the Danny Burns Challenge Cup, while Binger’s Army takes on Rinos Tigers in the other matchup.

Brad Caldwell produced the match’s only goal 30 minutes in when he sent a volley over the Greencaps’ goalkeeper.
