I

t wasn’t a particularly pleasant experience talking to Ron Mahy last week about the death of his daughter Christy. He was terse, angry and easily annoyed.

But that’s okay. After all, Mahy is still grieving. And the situation he finds himself in is akin to suffering a raw, open wound while someone repeatedly pokes a pointed stick into it, over and over again.

He’s not alone. Walking in solidarity with him is a legion of people hurt by all manner of crimes, negligence and calamitous accidents, sentenced to stew in the slow-simmering cauldron of the justice system.

Three years ago, on July 30, 2014, Christy – who was 36 – was on her way home to Burkeville when she stopped her bicycle at the junction of Russ Baker Way and the Dinsmore Bridge on Sea Island.

She was waiting for the lights to change when she was hit and killed by an SUV bearing an “N” sticker.

To the layperson, it would seem to be an uncomplicated, if tragic, event.

One vehicle. One driver. One victim. By Mahy’s account, more than a dozen witnesses.

But as we stand today, three years of reports, reconstructions and reviews have snaked their way through various official departments while the end of a young woman’s life remains a question mark.

For 64-year-old Mahy, the wait has taken its toll.

“I’m rundown, beat up, worn out and f---in’ fed up,” he says.

To be sure, those on the front lines tasked with unravelling this most grievous of harms – the police, investigators and prosecutors – do their best in a bogged-down structure that is both bursting at the seams and sorely in need of more resources.

But here’s the rub. Mahy’s experience is not just one of indefinite outcomes. It’s one of indifference.

It’s a request for an update that goes unanswered.

Rote responses. Transfers to voicemail.

When Richmond RCMP was asked if it could issue a statement addressing the Mahy family and their distress over what they perceive to be a lack of progress in their case, the answer was: “No.” It’s not unlike the situations people find themselves in after a divorce, cancer diagnosis, or suicide of someone dear. Silenced by awkwardness, or worse, apathy, those outside the hurting clam up.

The silence is stinging. The rebuke, though not intended, ruinous.

Brandie Mol, who lived with Christy for four years as a roommate prior to the crash, struggles with the void.

“An apology could do so much,” Mol says. “Even if it’s not an apology, some acknowledgement.”

She’s right, of course. “I’m sorry” doesn’t need to delineate blame. (I’m sorry for your loss… I’m sorry this happened to your family… I’m sorry this is taking so long).

Part of Ron Mahy is stuck in those terrible moments that changed everything near the Dinsmore Bridge three years ago.

Closure, if it ever comes, will take time.

If it can’t be quick, it should at least be compassionate.

Dear Editor, Last weekend I was reminded of just how delicate our estuaries and marsh ecosystems are here in Steveston and how important it is for the community to feel connected to them and take care of them.

Being an avid kayaker I have developed a strong connection to the marshlands and waterways around Richmond, Ladner and the West Coast. I care deeply about these ecosystems, and I am concerned and feel a need as a community member to speak out and request your assistance.

On Sunday evening as we picnicked with many other families at Garry Point, we were disturbed by two Sea-doos racing up and down the shoreline and doing donuts in front of the beaches.

The Sea-Doos raced in and out of Steveston Channel and the marsh off Garry Point where there are estuaries with bird nesting areas as well as other marine life.

This is not the first time I have seen SeaDoos in the marsh areas. I am an avid kayaker and have experienced their speed and noise in the Steveston and Ladner marshes many times, and have seen their tracks left in the marsh mud at low tide. It is sad that the operators of these vehicles seem to have no respect for the ecosystem or the nesting areas and no awareness of the impact that their Sea-Doos have on the ecosystem as well as the public who seek the peacefulness and tranquility of this beautiful area.

There is plenty of open ocean for the seadoos to race and enjoy themselves. I think you would all agree that the estuaries and marshes are not the place for them. I would like to request that the council implement a by-law that prohibits Sea-Doos and other recreational motorized boats from entering these vulnerable ecosystems.

Condos leave us homeless Settlement big;

Dear Editor, One hundred and forty families in central Richmond will have to move soon as our rental building is being torn down for condos — condos that we cannot afford to buy.

Condos are so hot now that buyers are putting in offers sometimes $50,000 dollars over asking and without subjects. The loans the government is willing to lend first-time buyers only make the housing market more unaffordable. A 20-year-old two-bedroom apartment lists at almost half a million dollars.

I thought as a teacher I had a good job, but I can’t afford a home in Vancouver. The B.C. economy does not allow the average person

to legally make enough money to buy an apartment. Notice, I didn’t say house. Those rarities are for investors or the lucky children of people who bought years ago.

There is a problem here. The high-rise condos that will replace my apartment building will not densify the neighbourhood because most of them will sit empty.

The property speculators who are building these new buildings believe renting devalues them.

When our buildings are torn down, there will be 140 families looking for accommodation. The vacancy rate is under one per cent in Richmond! Waiting lists for most co-ops are closed.

have to move farther afield. But now there’s another problem. The Liberals’ 15 per cent tax did not extend to outlying areas. So now homes in Maple Ridge and Chilliwack have gone up by 12 per cent from last year. Are we supposed to move to another province?

A lot of young people who were raised in B.C. have moved away because of unaffordable housing. If the government cannot do something as simple and necessary as providing affordable housing — we’re not asking them to solve climate change here — then we really need to ask ourselves if they’re competent enough to manage the province.

Some people may think that since they own their house, none of this applies to them.

Well, sorry, it does.

I have friends who own houses and say they can’t move because the prices are too expensive to move up the property ladder.

Their children have moved and they see their grandkids once or twice a year. No one wins, except for the property speculators who’ve turned what used to be affordable homes into lottery tickets.

so was abuse Dear Editor, With regards to the $10.5 million Omar Khadr settlement, the more one investigates the reasons for the settlement, the more they stink.

The government breached international treaties, human rights obligations, and the rule of law.

A “confession” was extracted by torture of a legal child during 10 years in a prison built outside the reach of U.S. law (that is why Guantanamo Bay is on Cuba) by a military court with military rules for a “crime” created retroactively.

The “murder” of a foreign invading soldier by an “unprivileged belligerent” (huh!) arose in a wartime battle. There is even doubt that Khadr threw the grenade.

Never in war history has such a charge been laid.

Khadr was deprived of access to proper legal counsel and Canadian Consular assistance (with the complicity of the Canadian Conservatives).

In such circumstances of torture, most would confess to anything.

This was a classic “kangaroo court”! Calling him a “convicted”

murderer or terrorist is breathtakingly cynical.

Now the Conservative Party “leadern A young Omar Khadr ship” is groveling before the Americans, decrying a damage settlement, due in large part to their complicity in abuses. Why is that?

Sure the settlement is big, but it is for 10 years of Canadian government sanctioned abuse and torture. The courts would probably have awarded much more, if the trial had continued.

How many of us would expose ourselves to that abuse in exchange for that amount of money – probably none.

Fair-minded civilized people should be outraged at the government’s (primarily those same Conservatives) complicity in these abuses!

Missing man sought R

ichmond RCMP is seeking the public’s help in locating a missing Richmond resident.

Stephen Yuk Feng Cheng was last seen in Burnaby near Metrotown on July 12.

Cheng, 34, weighs 91 kgs, has brown eyes and black hair. He may be driving a brown 2014 Mercedes E350 sedan.

Cpl. Dennis Hwang of the Richmond RCMP said “it is highly unusual for Stephen

to be out of touch from family and friends for such an extended period of time.”

Police are asking Cheng to, “please make contact with someone to tell them you are safe.”

Anyone with information as to Cheng’s whereabouts is urged to contact local police.

Herbicide risk low: Prof

esidents need not be overly worried about a herbicide that is currently being used in Richmond to tackle the invasive Japanese Knotweed, according to Karen Bartlett, professor of UBC’s School of Population and Public Health Earlier this week a Burkville resident raised concerns about the application of the herbicide in front of her home where her organic garden sits.

“The discussion of the relation between Glyphosate and cancer has been going on for a long time. The number of cases is still very low so we don’t have a sure conclusion yet,” said Bartlett.

Last March, Glyphosate was added to California’s Proposition 65 list of chemicals

known to cause cancer, according to the California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA).

Despite that, Bartlett argues that the risk to residents is minimal if handled correctly.

“This herbicide is broken down by sunlight and doesn’t last very long, and you can tell if the vegetables are contaminated because they would die soon.”

The city also stressed that the herbicide was only applied to a small area, was applied using a hand pump – so it would not have travelled more than 1.5 metres – and was kept more than one metre away from any waterline.

Father 'fed up' with lack of closure Third annual ride remembers Christy

on Mahy is sitting on the curb outside a grocery store on the Sunshine Coast, angry and struggling to find the right words.

He’s pulled his Harley Davidson over to answer his phone and the questions that have begun to surface regularly at this time of the year.

Three years ago, this Sunday, his daughter Christy Mahy, 36 at the time, lost her life in Richmond while waiting to cross the road at an intersection on Sea Island.

She was on her way home to Burkeville after running some errands on the afternoon of July 30, 2014, and had stopped her bicycle at the junction of Russ Baker Way and the Dinsmore Bridge. As she was waiting for the lights to change, a Pontiac Aztek SUV bearing a novice driver “N” sticker slammed into her.

Christy died shortly afterwards in hospital.

“How am I?” asks Mahy, his voice growing gruff on the line.

“I’m going to be 65 soon. I work 80 to 100 hours a week. I’m rundown, beat up, worn out and f---in’ fed up.”

It’s difficult for him to share memories of his eldest daughter, a big sister to sibling Joni.

His wife Sheree, the girls’ mom, died of breast cancer in 2005 and the family was temporarily fractured in the aftermath.

Mahy moved to Halfmoon Bay near Sechelt. Joni shifted closer to SFU in Burnaby, where she was studying. Only Christy stayed in Richmond, in Burkeville, just five minutes from where the collision would claim her life in 2014.

“I’m not going to talk about what (Christy) was like,” Mahy barks into the phone, his voice trailing off with the threat of tears. “I’m sitting on the side of the road here… I know this kind of stuff sells newspapers, but no.”

Nearly three years on, his grief remains raw, his daughter’s file remains open. No one has been identified as being responsible for the incident. No charges have been laid.

“There were 14 signed eyewitnesses and one driver,” Mahy says. “I mean, come on.”

In 2015, Mahy was told a “person of interest” had returned to the United Kingdom.

Last week, when contacted by the Richmond News, RCMP Cpl. Dennis Hwang said the Richmond detachment has finished its investigation in the case. He declined to say whether

or not the RCMP is recommending charges, and if they are, what those charges would be.

“We have forwarded our investigative package to Crown Counsel,” Hwang said in an emailed response.

In B.C., Crown counsel — prosecutors who operate independently of the government, police and victims — decides whether to proceed with Criminal Code, Motor Vehicle Act, or other related charges.

Dan McLaughlin, communications counsel for the BC Prosecution Service of the Ministry of the Attorney General, said the assessment process in the Mahy case is still underway.

“The BC Prosecution Service makes every effort to conclude the charge assessment process in a timely fashion,” said McLaughlin. “The complexity of the investigation and the legal issues, the volume of the resulting evidence and further investigations undertaken by the enforcement agency are all factors that will impact on the time it takes to complete a charge assessment.”

McLaughlin also said it wouldn’t be appropriate to discuss the specific circumstances of the Mahy file while the assessment is ongoing. He couldn’t say how much longer the assessment would take.

“We are unable to commit to a time frame within which the process will be complete,” McLaughlin said.

Brandie Mol, a family friend who lived with Christy as a roommate for four years prior to the fatal crash, said the turnout, which is expected to be the same this year, speaks to Christy’s character.

“She had a way of making everybody feel so special,” Mol said. “She was everybody’s favourite ‘Auntie Christy,’ she was always babysitting kids… it was just a gift she had. She made you feel better about everything.”

Mol said some sort of acknowledgement of what went wrong three years ago would go a long way to helping those impacted

by Christy’s death begin to heal.

“It might as well have been a ghost that killed her,” Mol said.

In the meantime, Mahy rides on, filling his days with work and stretches of highway on his Harley.

Recently, there’s been a glimmer of light… a visit with his eight-month-old grandson Espen, who came to see him with his mom Joni, Christy’s little sister, who is now 37.

He’s quite the little man, Mahy says of Espen, who has a Norwegian name in honour of Mahy’s late wife.

The little boy’s a cutie, Mahy agrees, and he never sits still.

“Oh my gosh…” he says into the phone, and the tears that come sound like happy ones.

ith a bright lime-green wall as a backdrop and an encouraging artist at your back, anything is possible in the Media Lab at the Richmond Cultural Centre.

A self-taught artist, Jackson has explored a variety of themes in her work, including inequality, discrimination and human suffering. She has worked with diverse groups, from Syrian refugees in Canada, to street kids in Brazil. 'My son will be in a wheelchair,' dad says

Health authorities review school notification policy as invasive strep A rises in B.C. GRAEMEWOOD Staff Reporter

he apparent transmission of invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) disease at Spul-uKwuks elementary in March has prompted health authorities to review whether students should be notified immediately if a classmate falls ill with the rare infection.

“The first step is we need to be notified if there’s just one case of invasive strep A case confirmed,” said Sam Chen, whose son John, a Grade 5 Spul-u-Kwuks student, remains in hospital after iGAS caused flesh eating disease (necrotizing fasciitis), resulting in immense loss of muscle mass.

“My son will be in a wheelchair, well, we don’t know how long,” said a somber Chen, who continues to fundraise to ease the family’s financial burden for what lies ahead.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) suspects John contracted the bacteria at school, although it’s uncertain exactly how it happened, said Chen.

This would be the first known school transmission in B.C. Meanwhile, provincial health authorities are simultaneously seeking answers to a steady rise of iGAS in B.C. A week before John was admitted to hospital, another student contracted iGAS and was hospitalized with other complications (streptococcal bacteria is fairly common, but when it

becomes invasive in blood, muscles and tissues, it can cause various serious conditions).

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) did not send out notices to parents until John became ill. That’s because transmission at a B.C. school had never happened before.

Chen thinks if an initial notice had been sent out, he would have considered John’s fever, sore throat and body pains to be an emergency. Instead, he took John to a medical clinic and a doctor prescribed ibuprofen and bed rest. Two days later John was being rushed into surgery at B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Medical Health Officer Dr. Althea Hayden said VCH will review its notification policy.

“We would have no reason to think elementary classmates would be at increased risk of developing a case of invasive group A strep,” said Hayden.

After John’s case was reported, VCH dispatched notices to the school and issued antibiotics to classmates, treating it as an outbreak, said Hayden.

Normally, notices and antibiotics are only issued to people in close contact, such as parents or, in the case of daycares, childcare workers and toddlers.

Prior to John’s case, VCH drew the line at school, because there was never such a case.

Now, VCH will review that line. But Hayden noted health authorities must still balance the risks and benefits of notifying members of the public. Risks include unwarranted worry and panic, patient confidentiality and, importantly,

the risks of needlessly taking preventative antibiotics. She stressed that not notifying schools after one case was “not a workloadbased decision” and VCH already has one of the most comprehensive notification policies in the developed world.

“A severe disease like this in children is quite unusual,” said Hayden, who said medical staff close to John are heartbroken.

Also heartbroken is Trustee Sandra Nixon, who, given the new realities, now favours notification to schools after one case.

“It may still be uncommon for Strep A to be spread among classmates; however in my opinion, we need to err on the side of caution as even one case is one too many. So I agree VCH should be looking into a change to the

protocols, and in particular, to the communication protocols, including immediate notification for parents when the first case is diagnosed in the school,” said Nixon, the Richmond Board of Education’s liaison with VCH. Dr. Monika Naus of the BCCDC told the Richmond News that 2016 had the most cases of iGAS (303) since record keeping began in 1997 and that 2017 is on pace to set a new record.

Naus said good hygiene is the best preventative measure.

Resistance to assistance: sound familiar?

As our population ages, the incidence of Dementia seems to be rising. It touches thousands of families across Canada, and all of our governments struggle to meet the rising demand for services needed to help people who are afflicted.

Our health care system in B.C. encourages such people to remain at home as long as possible, but in such situations, often there is not enough care available. In addition, today’s seniors tend to be stubborn and unwilling to accept care, preferring to be independent.

While it is understandable, it is usually difficult for their children and other caregivers to handle on a day-to-day basis. But perhaps the major problem in this scenario is that seniors can become vulnerable, further increasing the concern and stress on their families.

“If we wait for all 35 million Canadians to understand the difference and ask for the change, or wait for all the countries to agree on the fishing method, it would be too late,” said Ricketts. “We want to be in this business for another 50 to 100 years so we need to protect our resources. We don’t want the collapse of the Newfoundland cod fishery to be repeated.”

In 1992, the Newfoundland Grand Banks cod fishery collapsed after years of overfishing and incompetent fisheries management, which put 40,000 people out of work.

Ricketts said consumers can also drive the change by choosing canned tuna with labels such as FAD-free, pole and line, freeschool swimming caught and circle hook caught.

“The decision you make to choose responsibly caught tuna changes the way fishing is done around the world,” said Ricketts.

“Sustainability is not something you arrive at; it’s a journey.”

Ocean Brands started the transition to more sustainability a decade ago by selling tuna that was caught through a method called “pole and line,” which means one man catches one fish at a time using a fishing rod.

“It’s the most sustainable fishing, but it doesn’t allow us to provide responsibly caught fish with a price affordable for all Canadians,” said Ricketts.

The company then introduced fish sourced by methods such as “free swimming catching” and “circle hook catching,” which are considered responsible methods that are more affordable.

Greenpeace has preferences for pole and line, free swimming (FAD-free) and “circle hook” fishing methods.

“Free swimming” reduces the bycatch rate down to less than one per cent. And the company pays fishermen three to five cents more per can than how much they would make by catching fish with FAD. “Those new methods enable us to provide FAD-free fish on a large scale and eventually eliminate any FAD-caught tuna from our supplies,” said Ricketts.

Richmond firm is leading Canada’s tuna market towards a more sustainable approach to ocean ecosystems by providing tuna caught using fair practices.

Ocean Brands, located at 600 Lysander Lane, holds the second-largest market share of tuna business in Canada. Its tuna is mostly caught in the west central Pacific Ocean, processed in Thailand and sold in Canadian markets.

Earlier this month, Greenpeace ranked the company fourth place on its Canned Tuna Sustainability Ranking, in recognition of its effort to push real change on the water.

Since October 2016, the Richmond-based brand has been providing tuna caught only in ways considered responsible to ocean species by Greenpeace, according to Ian Ricketts, vice-president of Ocean Brands.

“It was one of the biggest milestones for our company. We now provide the widest range of FAD-free tuna in Canada, and we are very proud of that,” said Ricketts.

(FAD stands for a fishing method called Fish Aggregating Devices).

Sarah King, senior ocean strategist at Greenpeace Canada, said “we are very happy to see big players like Ocean Brands really pushing the market in the right direction and driving the change of the industry towards sustainability.”

Ocean Brands has changed to become greener over time. Launched in 1983 in Richmond, the company was like most other fishing firms at that time, using FAD, which is still dominant in the tuna industry today.

FAD uses man-made objects to attract fish to make them easy to catch. However, the device also attracts other species like turtles, sharks and baby fish, and is defined as a destructive fishing method to the ocean system and fish stocks by Greenpeace Canada.

The bycatch rate can be as high as 10 per cent, and the sharks and turtles caught are often thrown back to the ocean dead, according to Ricketts.

Many major fishing brands and supermarkets in Australia and Europe have made commitments to ban FAD-caught fish on the market.

“Canada is actually behind,” said Ricketts. “We are happy to lead the change.

ne of the longest running tournaments in Metro Vancouver concludes with championship Sunday at the Richmond Tennis Club.

The 55th annual Richmond Open has brought roughly 300 entries to the Minoru Park facility for numerous draws that began a week ago. The women’s Open Division final is slated for 12:30 p.m. and the Men’s Open championship match follows at 2 p.m. Both are best-of-three sets.

“The tournament is sanctioned by Tennis B.C. and is part of their Summer Series that also includes Burnaby, Coquitlam, Delta and Stanley Park,” explained RTC president Kim Jensen. “We used to always be the first tournament of the season in May but they changed it this year. We are hoping to go back to the original date as there would be even more entries.”

While the event is administered by Tennis B.C., including seeding and scheduling, it takes a considerable effort by about 50 club volunteers to pull it off.

“The nitty gritty part is done by Tennis B.C., we look after things like concession, monitoring courts to ensure the schedule is going smoothly and also working at the tournament desk where players check in before their matches,” continued Jensen, who is typically putting in 12 hour days himself. “My job as much as anything is to round up the people that are required to make this a professional-looking tournament.”

Entering play Thursday, the top seeds in the men and women’s Open draws — Justin Guay and Juliet Jian Wen Zhang — were through to quarter-final and semi-final play respectively.

Guay, 24, is a McRoberts graduate who played collegiately at the University of Portland. He also happens to be an assistant professional at the RTC.

City staff decided to only designate one court for evening public lessons. The RTC and the Minoru Tennis Association are expected to meet with the city this fall to discuss next year’s court availability.

Richmond athletes off to Winnipeg for Summer Games dozen Richmond athletes will be part of the Team B.C. contingent heading to Winnipeg this week for the Canada Summer Games.

The 2017 Canada Summer Games marks the multi-sport competition’s 50th anniversary and coincides with Canada’s 150th birthday. Special celebrations in Winnipeg will mark the importance of the Games to the country.

Team B.C. features 354 athletes, 52 coaches and technical support staff. Competition will take place in 16 sports against teams from Canada’s 13 provinces and territories.

The Richmond contingent features: Athletes — Balraj Zimich (athletics), Kirsten Abo (basketball), Alisha Lau (golf), Jalen Donaldson (soccer,) Jordan Britten-Young (softball), Sierra Sherritt (softball), Joseph Rybicki (softball), Ethan Chan (swimming), Matthew Crawford (swimming), Amanda McCallum (swimming), Jiaxin Gong (tennis), Zixiao Zhao (volleyball).

They will be joined by: Coaches — Carrie Watts (basketball), Kevin Black (sailing); Managers — Christine Wong (golf), Travis McClellan (volleyball); Technical Support — Wesley Ochitwa (Road

Cycling).

Lau, who will soon be headed to the University of Colorado for her freshman season on a full-ride scholarship, secured her trip to Winnipeg by winning the recent B.C. Junior Girls Championship.

Donaldson will be a member of the B.C. women’s soccer team that captured gold at the last Games. Her teammate — Emma Regan — has been named the Opening Ceremony Flag Bearer.

Team B.C. finished third behind Ontario and Quebec at the 2013 Games with 122 medals and is expected to be a top performer once again.

ALISHA LAU

It’s been a sizzling summer so far for golf standout Alisha Lau. The recent JN Burnett Secondary graduate turned in a dominant performance at the B.C Junior Girls Championship in Kelowna, cruising to a decisive 10-shot victory. Alisha set the early tone with a course record 5-under 67 in the opening round. Soon after, she was named to Team B.C. for the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg. First, she will be heading to Ontario next week for the Canadian Junior Girls Championship. Alisha earned a full-ride scholarship at the University of Colorado where she begins her freshman year this fall. The News is proud to recognize Alisha as athlete of the month for July.

Multi-sport standout taking his lacrosse career to SFU this fall “We are all SFU.” That is the slogan and catch phrase for Simon Fraser University. For Jordan Roberts, one of McMath’s finest graduating athletes, it is a true statement.

Roberts has accepted an offer and scholarship to attend the Burnaby Mountain campus this fall thanks to his exceptional talent as a lacrosse player, his stellar academic record, and his solid character as a young man.

Canada’s official national summer sport has been a true passion for Roberts since he was four-years-old as a member of the Richmond Lacrosse Association.

Since that time, he has been key to winning a vast amount of field and box lacrosse tournaments, several A2 provincial medals, including the coveted gold at the 2015 field provincials.

Due to his talent, Roberts took his skills to the Burnaby Mountain Selects program where his play was noted by

several universities. This past season, he also suited up for the Delta Footmen at the A1 field lacrosse level and helped the team earn league championship honours.

Complimented by his solid academic achievements, Roberts received offers to continue his lacrosse career at Bishops, Trent, McGill and SFU. His final decision went with the Clan, while working toward his criminology or education degree.

Roberts also made a major impact on the athletic program during his five years at McMath, being part of the school’s rugby, volleyball, basketball, cross-country, swimming and track teams.

Rugby became his next next bestloved sport and he was a big part of the program for five seasons playing under McMath vice-principal Mike Charlton. Roberts established himself as one of the top centres in the province, generating interest from club teams around the Lower Mainland.

He earned several “Man of the Match” awards and had dominating performances on attack and defence during the school’s 16-day United Kingdom tour last spring.

Roberts concluded his high school career being named a Commissioner’s 15 selection at provincials, capping the Wildcats best season ever with a fourth place finish — tops among any public school in the province at the “AA” tier one level.

He was honoured at the school’s recognition evening as the 2016-17 winner of the Alex Campbell Cup. It is presented to a top all-around student-athlete, one with exceptional academic results, fine athletic abilities, true sportsmanship characteristics, and to a person who gives back to his school and community in volunteerism and service.

One of McMath’s and Richmond’s finest, SFU is fortunate to gain this top candidate for their academic and athletic programs.

■ After being a major force on the rugby field for the McMath Wildcats this past season, Jordan Roberts will be focusing on lacrosse as he heads to Simon Fraser University in September.

Perfect run earns Blaze RASA Summer League Division One title It’s been a regular season of perfection for the Delta Blaze en route to being crowned champions of the First Division in the Richmond Adult Soccer Association’s Summer League.

The Blaze clinched top honours with three weeks to spare thanks to an outstanding 9-0-0 run.

Led by coaches Marcus Brougham and Geoff Salt, commitment from all players has

been a vital part of their successive wins this season. The Blaze have consistently fielded a large squad to ensure they maintain their strong attacking form. That has resulted in a league-leading 34 goals, while surrendering just 10.

Their most recent result was a 4-1 victory over 2016 league champion Rinos Tigers.

Brad Caldwell scored twice, while Ryan Rogers and Bryce Connors added singles.

Meanwhile, it’s been a much-tighter race in the RASA Second Division with the United Nations (7-2-3) just two points clear of the All Blacks (6-2-4) and three ahead of Bombastic (6-3-3). Even the Strikers (5-3-4) and Metropolitan (5-5-2) have been in the title hunt.

United Nations’ results include a 4-0 win over Bombastic thanks to a pair of goals from Fraser Kirkland and singles by Matt Legge and Austin Gibbs. That was followed by a 3-0 triumph over the Richmond FC Olympics.

Other recent action saw the All Blacks hold off the Strikers 2-1 behind the terrific goalkeeping of Peter Procter.

Nan Yang and Zac Bowman gave the All Blacks a 2-0 second half lead before Bryan Archibald made things interesting with 15 minutes remaining. Only some key saves by Procter prevent the equalizer.

League play in both divisions concludes this week with the RASA Challenge Cup slated for August.

“Betty Boop” spent her time making sure everyone around her was enjoying a laugh, a smile and a kind word. Hers was a life well lived, built on a foundation of compassion and kindness. It was important to Mom that every stranger she met become a lifelong friend. She never met a baby that didn’t need a kiss or a puppy that didn’t need to be petted.

Mom embraced life to its absolute fullest. She enjoyed golfing, swimming, playing bridge and Rummikub, volunteering for the Heart and Stroke foundation and acting as an informal ambassador for the Steveston Starbucks. She also enjoyed her daily walks with the Lansdowne Center Mall walking club, spending time with her friends at the Richmond Center coffee club and the occasional glass of wine or Dubbonet.

She was absolutely devoted to her late husband Harvey and her 5 children, Shauna (Ron), Randy (Micheline), Kerri (Al), Mark (Beverley) and Margaret (Keith). Her greatest joy was time spent with her 10 grandchildren as well as her 10 great-grandchildren.

She made a point to let them know they were always loved and cared for.

Although there are too many people to name, Betty would have wanted to thank all the friends and acquaintances she met along life’s journey. She was especially appreciative of all the wonderful people she met during her 5 years residency at the Maple Residences in Steveston as those were wonderful years for her. Mom grew up an only child, however, she always felt a special kinship with Alannah and Bob Jacques; as well as her niece Susan; and nephews Kent and Adam and was always deeply grateful for their time together.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke foundation at www.heartandstroke.bc.ca As her last remaining wish was to make it to her 90th birthday, a celebration of her life will be postponed until October 21st, 2017.
