o, about this “sharing” economy... I’m trying to wrap my head around it.

I love the idea of exchanging resources. If you have a lawn mower and my yard’s turning into the Serengeti, (as in tall grass of), I’m all for a little app to help us work something out.

This way of doing business could go a long way in helping us reduce the amount of stuff we need and make better use of the stuff we have — be it a car or a lawn mower.

I also love the grassroots nature of direct interactions. We’ve allowed a lot of bureaucracy to develop in our consumer society. Think of what’s involved for every individual on your street or in your complex to buy a, say, power drill, given how often most of us use one.

And, if you do go out and buy one, where do you keep it? I have bikes spilling into the backyard as it is.

Last Friday, we published a feature about a woman who started a website that connects buyers and sellers in the real estate market, essentially cutting out the real estate agent.

She said it’s a way to, among other things, undercut the hoarding of information (the past purchase price of a property) only available to realtors. She argues there’s no reason such data shouldn’t be available to the public.

In today’s paper, we have a story about an Uber-style ride service operating in town.

Again, if someone has a car and extra time, why shouldn’t they download an app that connects them with someone who needs a lift? A little money on the side probably doesn’t hurt either.

But here’s the rub.

For sure, professions can be territorial and set up licences and impose barriers just to protect their turf — realtors certainly aren’t the only ones guilty of that. However, those licences and regulations can also protect us.

I actually bought my home without a realtor, and I don’t know that I actually saved money.

Some good advice might have helped me.

And frankly, I like knowing that the stranger whose car I’m climbing into has had a criminal record check, and their vehicle has been inspected and is properly insured.

Moreover, I don’t like the idea of helping to undercut peoples’ ability to make a living. If I’m saving money because we’re using our resources more efficiently, or because we’re streamlining systems, or because I have access to more information, that’s great.

But if my savings are the result of people working for next to nothing, while making it impossible for others to make a living, I’m less enthused.

There’s no doubt, apps and other technologies are shaking the foundations of how we do business — nothing wrong with that.

But with any shake-up, there’s going to be fallout. It’s worth considering who gets what share of the sharing economy.

Dear Editor, Re: “Real Estate 2.0,” July 7.

I read with interest the article regarding Suuty.com. I have long wondered why realtors feel they are entitled to such a large portion of anyone’s biggest private investment – their home.

With respect to comments in the article pertaining to the “value of a licensed professional realtor,” I am confused. Years ago, my husband and I purchased our first home in Richmond. We were given the listing by the selling realtor, stating that the house was insulated.

When we renovated and opened up some outside walls, we found this was not the case. The issue ended in court and we lost the case, even though we had it “in writing.” The realtor assumed no responsibility, because we did not personally question whether the house was indeed insulated...

so much for “errors and omissions insurance and adhering to a code of ethics.”

Then, about 10 years ago, a friend purchased a house in Richmond, again through a realtor, which was “inspected” and fees were paid to both “professionals” (realtor and house inspector).

When my friend moved in, she realized she had rats in the attic. The inspector admitted to seeing rat feces in the attic, but did not report this to her, as “that was not what he was inspecting for.”

Neither the realtor nor the inspector were found legally responsible. Very ethical, I’d say. Where was the errors and omissions insurance on this one?

Kudos to Marilouise Muller and best wishes for a successful with her online “Uber of real estate.”

In response to the people who wrote in disputing my taste in vacation spots, I have this to say: I stand corrected. Some great things about Winnipeg

Dear Editor, I hang out my laundry to dry and years ago, I had to wipe the clothesline only once, after the winter.

Now, I wipe every time and the rag is always filthy, no matter what the season. So I did an experiment.

Two years ago, I hung a thick, white flannel cloth on the clothesline and never took it down.

Today, it is grey and almost totally consumed by holes and tears.

If the pollution and dirt in the air do this to a thick textile, imagine what they do to our bodies and the environment.

The case of Nicholson Estate v. Johnston (reasons released last week) is about relationships and property ownership. The deceased husband’s Estate, by its Executor (his wife), claimed for an interest in a property that the wife thought was owned partly by her husband. In fact, the owner was the Estate of the deceased husband’s business partner.

The partner and the deceased husband had a romantic relationship years before the husband married his wife. From 1982 to 1996, the partner ran a company in the Northwest Territories, and moved it in 1996 to Courtenay. The property purchased was in Courtenay. The business partner, over the years, had paid for most of its purchase and maintenance.

But it was clear that the deceased husband and his surviving wife did a lot of work over time to improve it.

The Court found that ownership of the property and the business was an extension of the personal relationship between the husband and business partner (though the husband then married the surviving spouse). The spouse was awarded a one-third interest in the property.

This case was about two years-long relationships. The surviving spouse was either naïve or willfully blind (the Court said). Presumably she could have asserted an interest in the property while all parties were alive, but I am guessing it may have been too difficult for her.

Child survives 5-storey fall Alan Campbell

A

young child escaped with her life after plummeting five floors from an apartment building in central Richmond.

The girl, thought to be four or five years old, fell more than 60 feet from a seventh-floor balcony on Wednesday afternoon onto a gravel-covered canopy on the second floor.

Incredibly, after the horrific plunge – at the 12-storey Panorama Place complex on Granville Avenue close to Gilbert Road – the girl sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

However, the second-floor resident who called 911 and kept the girl calm until emergency services arrived, was told by paramedics how they discovered that the child was home alone.

“I was about to leave my apartment when I heard this very loud sound,” said Anna Larichev.

“I thought something big had fallen over in the apartment and started looking around. I couldn’t see anything.

“But then I happened to look outside and there was this little

girl lying face down on the canopy outside. She wasn’t moving at first. But after a few seconds, she started to roll over.”

Larichev called 911 and then went out onto her own balcony, adjacent to the canopy, to tell the girl to stay where she was.

“I could maybe have reached her with a ladder, but the operator told me not to risk getting hurt or to move the girl in case she had injuries,” she added,

noting the incident happened about 2:40 p.m.

“I don’t know what would have happened if I wasn’t at home.

She was trying to crawl, but wasn’t really crying that much.

It was amazing. All I could hear her saying was ‘police’ and ‘help.’

“I was worried she was going to crawl off the canopy onto the ground.”

Paramedics told Larichev they

suspected the girl had broken ankles and arms.

“There was a paper airplane on the canopy, so I assume she threw that over and was trying to get to it.”

The BC Ambulance Service wouldn’t give out any information, as per its policy for “routine” incidents.

A spokesperson for Richmond Fire-Rescue (RFR), which was first to attend, said it responded to an incident on Granville Avenue where a young child fell from the seventh floor onto a canopy one floor above ground level.

“The child was alert and able to communicate with our teams on arrival, however sustained serious injuries to the lower extremities, along with the potential of internal injuries.”

Richmond RCMP confirmed it was called in by RFR after receiving information about injuries to a young child.

A spokesperson for Richmond RCMP told The News how the girl “miraculously” sustained only non-life threatening injuries.

The News understands that the B.C. government’s Ministry of Children and Family Development is now investigating.

House massing public hearing

A

nother big turn-out is expected Monday night at Richmond City Hall for a decision on proposed changes to massing regulations on single-family homes.

Recommendations emanating from a city council planning committee last month, regarding minimum rear yard setbacks, lengths of walls and projection of garages, angered a number of residents, who voiced their disapproval at a subsequent city council meeting.

As such, several of the items in question were rolled back to the original city staff recommendations, namely rear yard setbacks, which are now being proposed at a minimum of 25 per cent of the lot depth.

However, one of the residents who has been fighting to curtail the impact of large, single-family homes in Richmond, John ter Borg, said people should still go to Monday’s public hearing.

“I think this is still a great opportunity for people to speak their minds; that’s what a public hearing is for,” ter Borg said.

“It’s still very important for people to make their voices heard... this is never a done deal.

The public hearing takes place Monday, July 17 at 7 p.m. at Richmond City Hall.

A

new society has taken root in Steveston which promises to include business owners, property owners and residents alike.

The Steveston Village Voice Society (SVVS) was formally registered recently by a couple of local businessmen and a resident to primarily organize events and, as the name suggests, lend a voice to all concerned.

One of its founders, Davood Khatami – who owns and operates Davood’s Bistro on No. 1 Road and Moncton Street – said he decided to form SVVS after co-hosting the inaugural OktoberfeSteveston event last fall.

Khatami said, as much as he enjoyed putting events like that together, he would love more shoulders leaning on the wheel and wants to mobilize the ample support he feels is out there in the Steveston community.

“It gives another voice to the village; we can function better as a society, more efficiently, as opposed to it always being Davood,” said Khatami.

“This gives us a bigger voice to approach organizations, such as the city. It gives it more credibility.”

The society, said Khatami, has three directors right now – himself, Dominique Jarry, who owns Sugar Art, and local resident Paul Pedersen – with hopes of garnering more support when a sign-up sheet comes out during the summer.

“I’ve been talking to many people and they love the idea; I hope to get them involved very soon,” he said.

“There is no membership fee but people can donate, if they wish. We won’t be knocking on people’s doors for membership fees.

“Our primary function will be to organize events in the village. We will likely get together every month or few months. It totally depends on what we want to organize.”

Another Steveston local who is keen to sign up for the society is Nadine Jarry - daughter of SVVS director Dominique Jarry - who has called the village home for 20 years.

“It’s nice to know that, if something’s going on, you can at least have a say in it and be informed; whether it’s a big event or any new bylaws in the village,” said Nadine.

“I do get affected by things happening here, even though I don’t own a business.

“I think it’s a great platform or avenue for people to get involved in the village and its events, as it’s for business owners, employees, property owners and residents. Anyone that has a stake in Steveston, really.”

Acknowledging that Steveston Community Association might tick many of the engagement boxes she, as a resident, may have, Nadine said she doesn’t think you “have to have one thing over the other.”

“I think it’s great to have options to connect with people in the village.

“What I like about this is that it’s very eventfocused and brings together people of all backgrounds in Steveston.”

Aware that some may view the society’s birth being in conflict with Steveston Merchants Association’s (SMA) ongoing bid to form a business improvement association (BIA), Khatami said he has absolutely nothing against the SMA. “I’m not here to fight anybody or go against the SMA. I want the village to work together.

“We don’t stand against the SMA, but we don’t want a BIA here, it’s as simple as that.

Steveston doesn’t need beautification or a BIA, it’s the city’s job to put up flowers.”

The formation of a Steveston BIA would impose a mandatory levy on local businesses, which would be collected by the City of Richmond, on behalf of the BIA. The move to form a BIA in Steveston has been in the works for many years, but it has been far from smooth sailing, with many businesses in the village opposed to its creation, citing the added expense.

More outreach by the SMA is now taking place in the village and a statement released to The News by the consultant conducting the outreach, Michelle Barile, told of “misinformation about BIAs” being circulated by some local businesses.

“The ultimate goal is to connect and provide accurate information. There has been valuable dialogue and interest in receiving information about the BIA opportunity,” Barile said.

The next open house is on July 27 at the Japanese Building at Steveston Museum from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“We will provide a proposal to business and property owners, and the city, about what a BIA costs, how it operates, proposed budget options and projects,” added Barile. “We aim to complete our outreach this fall.”

Last year, as part of the BIA bid, the SMA formed the Steveston Business Development Alliance (SBDA) and unsuccessfully asked the City of Richmond to chip in $30,000 towards a $42,000 community outreach study, in order to determine support for a BIA. ichmond RCMP are investigating a suspicious fire at one of the city’s prized heritage sites.

Just before 11 p.m. on Sunday, police were called in to help Richmond FireRescue, which was dealing with a fire at Branscombe House on Railway Avenue near Steveston Highway.

According to emergency services, as well as a small fire burning at the house – a recently restored Edwardian style home – firefighters had to douse flames in a vehicle

parked outside. Realizing that the fires may have been set deliberately, Richmond Mounties and an officer from Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Services flooded the area searching for a possible suspect.

According to police, a male wearing dark clothing was reportedly seen in the area.

However, after extensive patrols, a suspect was not found.

The fire, say police, is being treated as suspicious and an investigation is ongoing, alongside Richmond Fire-Rescue.

Those unlicensed companies are not able to do that.”

Chen said rigorous selection and training processes are in place for all the company’s drivers, but the driver who picked up the Richmond News reporter told a different story.

“It’s very easy to become a driver,” he said, “I was referred by a friend and didn’t attend any interview or training.”

Chen admitted that while Udi Kuaiche is able to find out information about a driver’s history, the company is not mandating criminal record checks.

“During the interview, we mostly examine the driver’s attitude, driving skills and familiarity of the roads here,” Chen said.

Udi Kuaiche drivers make about $1.6 per kilometre, although the rate varies according to the region, the time of the ride and the vehicle type. The company will take around 15 per cent of that.

In B.C., the average taxi rate is about $3.32 per kilometre.

Kang said cab drivers have to pay for overhead and to lease their licence plates; however, they keep all the money they make on a trip, so their per-kilometre pay will also vary. Kang also added, all drivers are guaranteed a minimum monthly salary from the company they work for.

Meanwhile, at Udi Kuaiche, the cost of

getting caught is considerably higher than a slap on the wrist.

Drivers without a passenger transportation licence who are caught picking up or riding with a passenger can be fined upwards of $1,150, according to the B.C. Ministry of Transportation.

In a statement to the Richmond News, the ministry wrote, “The ministry is aware there are some companies connecting passengers with drivers of unlicensed vehicles for hire in the Lower Mainland. An investigation into this matter is underway and given this investigation, further details about the companies or the drivers can’t be provided.”

However, the spokesperson confirmed that to date, ministry staff has issued five violation tickets to drivers.

While safety concerns are mounting over unregulated ride-sharing services, companies such as Udi Kuaiche are still high in demand.

“Our company is developing very fast. We have had about a 30-per-cent increase every month since it was launched (in March) and now there are over 300 registered drivers. A lot of our customers are in Richmond,” said Chen.

Racoon Go, another Chinese language ride-sharing service created by a Simon Fraser University student, has also been operating since last year.

The provincial NDP, set to form government with the Green party, said it will bring ride-sharing to B.C. as early as May 2018.

Blueberry bounty just beginning Short season in store after a wicked winter, but Richmond growers are ready to kick off the harvest Paula Carlson Contributor

or longtime farmer Humraj Kallu, blueberries are not just a business. They’re a part of the city’s heritage.

“Richmond has been specializing in berries since the beginning,” Kallu said, noting the city has grown up around farms.

Kind of like him.

Kallu’s parents have operated CanWest Farms on at 13051 Blundell Road since the 1970s. Prior to that, they tilled a patch of land on No. 7 Road.

As a kid, long before farm gate sales became commonplace, Kallu remembers cars pulling into the home’s driveway throughout the blueberry season and frequent knocks on the door from people wanting to purchase some of the family’s harvest.

“I pretended to be asleep a few times,” Kallu chuckles while walking through a crop of Elliott blues.

There’s no time for that now. The youngest of five children and the only boy, Kallu has taken over the day-to-day farm operations from his parents. Today, CanWest has grown into an international player, exporting blueberries to Japan.

An on-site farmer’s market caters to those in search of berries, along with other fresh fruits and produce grown by local farmers. For those wanting to get their hands dirty, CanWest offers a U-pick option as well. (Check canwestfarms.com for the latest events and family-friendly activities at the farm).

This year, the blueberry bounty is just beginning. A short season is in store due to the prolonged winter and wet spring, Kallu said.

What’s more, the crops were clobbered by a windstorm a couple of weeks ago when the plants were still in the flowering stages.

“It interrupted the pollination process,” said Kallu of the storm.

the blossoms right off and in some cases, broke the whole berry and branch off.”

Last year was the “other end of the spectrum,” with early picking starting around June 12.

Nevertheless, the fun is in full swing at CanWest Farms, which is hosting a blueberry season kickoff party on Saturday, July 15, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to freshpicked produce, food trucks and live entertainment will be on-site, as well as a kids’ zone with face painting and a petting zoo.

For those who like their fruit in a glass, they can walk across the street to sample the wares at the Canada Berries winery (12791 Blundell Road).

For even more of a buzz with your berries, pay a visit to another longtime blueberry farmer, Bob Fisher. The former proprietor of Fishers Blueberry Farm on No.

6 Road has shifted his focus – to bees.

“Oh, they’re fantastic, really,” said Fisher of the insects.

After a lifetime in the fields, Fisher sold his 10-acre blueberry farm near Blundell Road last year. He’s still in the berry business – expecting to harvest about 20,000-30,000 pounds of blueberries on property he’s leasing now near SilverCity Riverport – but his passion has shifted to pollinators.

As the owner of Westcoast Bee Supply, Fisher imports bees from New Zealand, transporting them in airplanes filled with dry ice to keep the heat-generating bees cool, and sells the offspring to other beekeepers. He’s also a proponent of apitherapy – using bee products such as honey, pollen, royal jelly, and even venom from live stings – to soothe and treat ailments such as arthritis or Lyme disease.

As for blueberries, Fisher said his small crop seems bountiful this season.

“I was out in the field today, and (the berries) look really nice.”

New festival to laud Richmond’s diversity

he new Richmond Arts and Cultural Festival kicks off at Lansdowne Centre on July 29, with multicultural art and performances that celebrate Canada and its ethnic diversity.

“We launched this festival to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday and the diversity of the culture of immigration in Richmond,” said Linda Li, president of Richmond Chinese Community Society (RCCS).

The festival will showcase artists with different backgrounds and introduce traditional performances from different cultures, said Li. “Performances will include the Lion Dance, Gu Zen musical performance, Korean traditional drum play, entertaining Japanese Taiko, classical Indian dance and Chinese magical face-mask performances given by artists from China.”

And 40 booths from organizations such as the Chinese Canadian Military Museum Society and Vancouver Hanfu Culture Society will be inside the mall.

“We believe art to be a crucial aspect of our lives, as it speaks for our soul,” said Li. “It crosses all boundaries and speaks one language.”

I

t’s been nine months since my mom passed away. Sometimes it’s hard to remember what she was like before she got dementia.

It’s ironic that my most vivid memories of her are of her last few days, when she declined so rapidly and there was only life leaking out of her. And enormous sadness. I try to put those memories aside and remember the good stuff.

Like how mom would patiently sing me to sleep with Brahms lullaby when I was little (a little insomniac).

And the way she would make up games for my sister Linda and me, to encourage us to eat our French toast at lunch, which she’d cut up into bite-size squares to make it more fun to eat.

And of course, we had the prettiest mom on the block – she always looked so elegant and beautifully dressed.

I remember too, how she put together a handwritten notebook of all her best recipes before we went away to university in Ottawa, hoping against hope that we’d actually cook.

There were lots of other happy memories, too. Unfortunately, these somehow get eclipsed by her years of dementia, which were so fraught and unpredictable.

It’s too bad parents don’t come equipped with a “How-To Manual for Having Kids.”

Most just learn on the job. It’s also unfortunate that kids don’t come with a “How-To Manual for Having Parents.” We also just learn on the job.

I’m not sure whose job is harder. It may be instinctual for some, but most of us just fumble along and do the best we can. Imperfection is ultimately the norm. One thing is for sure: Parenting is not for sissies.

That being said, this is what I want to remember about my mom: that she loved us deeply in her own way, even if it wasn’t always easy for her to show it. No matter the anger or disrespect I showed her in my growing-up years (of which I’m not proud), she continued to love me. In that regard, her memory was short, but kind.

As Honore de Balzac said, “The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.”

True that.

For those of you out there who are lucky enough to still have your mothers, I just want to echo what writer Rachel Wolchin said: “Call your Mother.

Tell her you love her.

Remember, you’re the only person who knows what her heart sounds like from the inside.”

Dolphin classic tips off at South Arm

I

t has taken no time at all for the Dolphin Park Classic to feel right at home at its new venue.

The 32nd edition of the popular 4-on-4 basketball tournament tips off on the weekend for the second straight year on the outdoor courts of the South Arm Community Centre. The Williams Road venue is a short distance from where it all started, until the event simply became too big for the tiny neighbourhood park.

After a good run at the Thompson Community Centre, organizers looked to bring the Classic closer to its original roots. South Arm happened to be where tourney founders Bira Bindra, Bruce Watson, Tony Wong Hen and Taj Johal often met up decades earlier.

The two high-quality courts built in 2011 made the decision easy.

It’s been smooth transition thanks to the efforts of South Arm Community Centre area coordinator Steve Mahon and others.

“It’s very exciting to be here again and we can’t say enough about the support we have got from Steve and the entire staff,” said Watson. “It was such a smooth transition last year and just a sense of belonging that this was the right place for us to be. We had feedback from a lot of people telling us the exact same thing.”

Watson has been busy the last few weeks finalizing the tournament entries. When action gets underway Friday night, there will be 11 teams competing in the men’s division and five more in the women’s division.

AthElite will be back to defend their title and it’s a good bet longtime Dolphin standout and now team organizer Aman Heran will make sure the champs will be a formidable force again. Their biggest competition is expected to come from the usual suspects, including the X-Falcons. After a one-year hiatus, they return with some of Richmond’s best talent in the past decade, including Elliot Mason, Vijay Dhillon and Brody Greig.

Dolphin regulars Running Rebels (Steve Lee) and AIA (Marek Klassen) will also be in the title hunt. There will also be excellent university representation with longtime UBC head coach Kevin Hansen entering a team, the same with Thompson Rivers coach Scott Clark.

“There are active players who have been coming here the last five to seven years and we call that a ‘Dolphin generation.’ Everyone likes to play here and there definitely a loyalty factor to it,” added Watson.

The entire 2017 line-up of teams includes: Men’s Division: XFalcons, Running Rebels, RNG, G2, Young Guns, AIA, AthElite, UBC, TRU, Blue Club Basketball and CBC. Women’s Division: Chaos, Original Grandmas, TOKO, Underdog Queen’s, UFV. The women’s final tips off 5 p.m.

hat country is going to get in the way of the Team India machine?

That will be one of the storylines heading into this weekend’s 38th annual Nations Cup at Hugh Boyd Park. The three-day tournament determines cultural and ethnic bragging rights on the soccer pitch and it’s an event Metro Vancouver’s South Asian community has certainly embraced in recent years.

With easily the biggest group of supporters behind them, India has been a major force in the Open Division and beyond.

They were looking for their third Open title in four years in 2016 when upstart Italy spoiled a

big party with a 3-2 overtime win. In total, India reached four of the six age division finals.

This time around, India looks to be part of the “group of death” in Open play that also features traditional powerhouses Germany and Ireland, along with Saudi Arabia.

Other Open Division groupings include: Group A: Italy, Japan, England, Fiji. Group B: Canada, Africa, Iran, Serbia. Group D: Scotland, China, Portugal, Croatia.

Five other titles will be on the line in the Women’s Open, Men’s Over 30, Men’s Over 38, Men’s Over 45 and Men’s Over 52 divisions.

Championship Sunday includes the women’s final at 3 p.m. and the Open title tilt going at 6 p.m. Both will take place on the Boyd Oval.

There will be a wide assortment of food trucks and the ever-popular beer garden.
