Steveston outdid itself with the July 1 festivities this year. It was incredible to see so many people out celebrating, decked in red and white.

We’ve been getting a number of comments on the Richmond News Facebook page about the day. The vast majority are positive.

People loved the spirit.

Some said how they liked having the different venues spread throughout “The Village.”

This year, because it was Canada’s 150th, the Salmon Fest ,with its parade and salmon bake, et al, was added to with stages and roving performers throughout Steveston.

There were complaints about parking, or the lack there of. Perhaps organizers needed to do a better job with shuttle buses, but it’s important to keep cars as far back as possible. Steveston just can’t handle that kind of traffic. Besides, the fact the streets are completely overwhelmed by pedestrians is a big part of what makes the event so special.

There was also a comment about the wisdom of trying to make it a two-day event.

“One suggestion — one day is enough.

Stretching the event over two days was a bit much for everyone, including those of us living immediately adjacent to the entertainment venues. Crowds were also thin on Sunday but a lot of human and financial resources went into sustaining the second day. But, all in all, it was a great event.”

In fact, I doubt many even knew there was a second day.

I went for a swim at the Steveston Pool on Sunday. And while it was nice to be serenaded with “In the Midnight Hour” while I did my lengths, there wasn’t more than 20 people in front of the stage.

Speaking of that mainstage, unlike in the past, this year it was in the parking lot on the south side of Moncton. Also new was a beer garden. While the location was great, particularly for a bigger crowd, the beer garden, which could have been mistaken for a dog park, was somewhat lacking. You couldn’t see the band — at all, and there were no chairs.

That said, the bands I heard, Thor (talk about a high school dance flashback) and the Powder Blues Band, were great. And all was forgiven with glorious fireworks.

As I recall walking away from the water’s edge jostling with thousands of other cheerful revelers through the streets, another Facebook post comes to mind, albeit regarding an unrelated story.

“Ubuntu, in Zulu (means), ‘I am because we are.’ We are all more connected than we know.”

And that is a connection really worth celebrating.

Letter is off base Canada Day party not over Dear Editor, Re: “Make your voices heard at meeting,” Letters, July 5.

Unfortunately, misinformation and unfounded allegations have been published in a recent letter regarding city council’s actions on the issue of building massing regulations. Moreover, the old picture attached to that published letter depicts a house governed by a Land Use Contract, a separate issue which has long since been addressed.

The building massing regulations to be considered at the upcoming public hearing on July 17 are specifically those proposed by city staff. Though council’s planning committee had endorsed some amendments to the original staff recommendations, those amendments were reversed at the June 26 council meeting by

For the past two years, council has worked diligently to address various community concerns about house size and related regulations.

We’ve held numerous meetings and heard from hundreds of residents, builders and other stakeholders. There are widely divergent opinions on the appropriate approach for dealing with these issues. Consequently, the city has proposed a number of changes to our regulations to best serve our community.

The most recent set of amendments to building massing regulations, including proposed new rules on setbacks, will go to public hearing on July 17. As always, all are welcome to provide input.

Will the new law save this Will?

The Wills, Estates and Succession Act was proclaimed into force on March 31, 2014. Before this Act, the law of Wills had been settled for centuries, including the strict requirements for signing a Will. For example, there had to be two witnesses in the same room, signing at the same time as the Will Maker, for the Will to be valid.

The law has changed dramatically, focusing now on intention. If a Will does not meet the requirements a Court can in, essence, “cure” it.

Last week, reasons for judgement were released in the case Re Litke Estate, in which the deceased made a Will in her own handwriting, seven years before she died. There were several mistakes in it.

The Court held that there are infinite ways to make a Will, and the facts are very important in each case. Here, the Court found that the document represented a “fixed and final” intention of the deceased. There was no indication the deceased was ill or incapacitated when she wrote the Will, and there was no undue influence or pressure on her to make it.

Funeral arrangements were covered. The assets were fully dealt with in the document. The Court held that the Will was valid.

In my opinion, this case moves the law forward inasmuch as the deceased’s intentions were recognized and followed. However, if you consider how much it must have cost to bring the case to Court, surely it would have been far less expensive to simply make a Will properly!

Gunfire leads to arrest Alan Campbell

A

45-year-old Richmond resident is in custody after a shot was fired in the far eastern point of the city on Wednesday afternoon.

Richmond RCMP responded to a call in the 4000 block of Boundary Road – near Highway 91 at the border with New Westminster – of a possible shot fired just before 5 p.m.

More than 10 Mounties and multiple Lower Mainland Police Dog Service units surrounded the location, where it is understood that an altercation took place between two parties, leading to the discharge of a weapon.

As such, a 45-year old male was treated at the scene for non-gunshot related injuries before being taken into police custody. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Police say the incident is not believed to be gang-related, although the man in custody is known to police.

“The preservation of life and public safety are two of the utmost priorities for our officers,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“Gun calls are one of the most dangerous types of calls that we are confronted with during the course of our duties.

“We are pleased to have resolved this situation with the swift arrest of a suspect and without the loss of life.”

“The investigation is ongoing; we are interviewing witnesses and the employer will be doing its own investigation and reporting on that,” she added of the incident, which happened around 9 a.m.

Initial reports suggest that the worker at Euro Asia Transload – just west of Blundell and No. 8 roads and close to the Fraser River – was struck by a truck, however the cause is still to be confirmed.

No details have been released by authorities on the worker’s age or if he’s a Richmond resident.

Public players rally back at private club

A

large group of recreational players based out of the Minoru Park public tennis courts now officially have a unified voice.

The Minoru Park Tennis Association was formed last month and already has over 100 members. All of them play regularly on the five, city-owned courts that are adjacent to the five, private courts operated by the Richmond Tennis Club.

The “community players” said they needed to rally together this spring when there was a proposal for the Richmond Tennis Club to use two of the city courts for evening lessons.

Rather than one or two residents voicing their concerns, the plan to form an association kicked into high gear.

“When notices were posted that those courts were going to be taken through the summer in prime time, people were angry. We wanted to do the right thing and try to negotiate, but make a point about these being public courts,” said association board member Jon Hunter.

“But now having an association, it represents many names and the city gives you more time, rather just one person showing up and complaining. It is a win-win situation.

“The city knows we are organized under a good purpose and that line of communication will now always be open with them.”

The two courts, instead, will be available to the club during off-peak hours, which are typically weekday mornings.

Board member Gino Suarez explained, “The purpose of this association is to promote and support recreational physical activities and social interaction within a multicultural environment through the sport of tennis.

“We are an inclusive association and welcome people interested in learning and/ or playing tennis from all levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced, including wheelchair tennis.”

It was back in 2012 when Suarez and others lobbied for improved playing conditions at Minoru — beyond the typical asphalt upgrades.

After being presented with a petition with roughly 300 signatures, the city agreed and installed new “Nova” surfacing — putting the venue on par with the best public courts in Metro Vancouver.

Jerry Lowe, another association member, says up to 200 residents regularly play at Minoru throughout the year and often tourists show up during the summer.

“They stay in the various hotels around us and they are recommended to come and play here,” said Lowe. “It’s like different shifts here. There are the early morning people, the afternoon guys then the dinner shift and they are here until 11 p.m. It’s just continuous.”

Suarez adds the association is not trying to take control of the courts — rather help create a social network among the regular players and establish a close relationship with the city.

“It’s a place where people interact, socialize and have fun. The level is very good here in terms of the sociable part.

That’s what we believe when we created this association.

“I think the city was a bit concerned we might try and take some kind of claim to these courts, but we don’t at all. We want to uphold their rules and look out for them as well.”

Tibetan monastery on No. 5 Road’s “Highway to Heaven” is asking for permission to erect religious statues, a produce store and parking on its agricultural land.

The Thrangu Monastery just southeast of the No. 5 and Blundell roads intersection — the first traditional Tibetan monastery in the Pacific Northwest – has been given preliminary approval by the City of Richmond to apply to the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) for a non-farm use on its property.

Like many of the religious institutions on No. 5 Road, the monastery utilizes some of its agriculturally zoned property to grow crops, thus attracting lower property taxes.

The monastery — which sublets a portion of its property to a local farmer to produce fruits, vegetables and flowers — wants to “beautify” the westerly 110 metres of the site with eight, four-metre “stupas,” or statues.

It also wants to build a one-storey building (53.5 square metres) for selling produce grown on the site, and create 54 parking spaces for customers and overflow for monastery events.

City council’s planning committee has given the monastery permission to apply to the ALC for the non-farm uses.

If the ALC gives the green light, the monastery must then apply for rezoning from the City of Richmond.

The Steveston Hotel has been chosen as the site for the City of Richmond’s special Canada 150 mural.

The southern wall of the hotel will be painted by award-winning maritime artist John Horton, who was commissioned by the city earlier this year to also produce a 24x36-inch framed oil painting as part of a $75,000-project to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary.

On Wednesday, city council’s planning committee approved a heritage alteration permit to have the mural, which will replicate the painting, on the protected building.

Horton said previously that his smaller painting, which will be hung outside of city council chambers, will have multicultural and “working river” themes.

The painting will reflect Richmond’s “rich tapestry of cultures, recognizing the original First Nations residents, early European settlers and the immigrants from a multiplicity of cultures that have since made their homes here,” according to a report to city council from public art planner Eric Fiss.

Horton, an official Canadian naval war artist, is considering painting the docking of the SV Titania — a clipper owned by the Hudson’s Bay Company that loaded the first shipment of canned salmon to Europe in 1889 — in Steveston.

The hotel’s owners can alter or remove the mural after five years.

t’s perhaps not what they signed up for and it’s certainly not what they’d envisaged.

But for at least two of Richmond’s four B.C. Liberal MLAs, they’re learning that life in Opposition is going to be markedly different from the one they’d known and expected.

Former journalist and LNG lobbyist Jas Johal, who scraped into the new Richmond-Queensborough seat by just 124 votes, said he’s excited about being part of the “strongest opposition in the history of B.C. politics up, against the weakest government in the history of B.C. politics.”

While Richmond-Steveston veteran John Yap is still wrapping his head around the fact he’s going to be sitting on the opposite side of the legislature for the first time in his 12-year career as an MLA. Both, however, are adamant that the new, governing NDP and Green provincial

alliance is going to have its work cut out.

And they are both acutely aware of the tightrope the new alliance will be walking every day the legislature sits, with a 43-43 MLA split in the legislature meaning the NDP-appointed Speaker of the House possibly being called on to break a tie – a rare occasion in B.C. politics.

“I signed up for public service; of course, you would rather be in government and making decisions,” Johal told the Richmond News. “(The NDP) are going to have to bend the rules, in terms of the Speaker of the House, to get things done.

“With the accord they have signed, it

means they are going to have to politicize the Speaker. We are going to be a very strong opposition.”

Yap, while acknowledging his “first-time experience” in Opposition, said it “will be a change, for sure; but life is full of changes and new opportunities.

“I will still be fighting for Richmond and Steveston; of course, going from a government caucus to an opposition caucus is going to be a transition.

“It all comes down to who shows up for the vote. People have lives, people miss flights, people are sometimes not able to make it to Victoria. A lot of my constituents have been telling me that they don’t think

(an NDP government) will last.

“All (Liberal MLAs) will be trying our very best to be there.”

Premier Christy Clark, in her throne speech prior to the vote of no-confidence and subsequent NDP/Green takeover, incorporated many items from the NDP’s and Green’s election platforms.

Johal and Yap were asked how a BC Liberal Party can then provide a credible Opposition when the aforementioned alliance attempts to turn its platforms into policy.

“There’s going to have to, at some point, be a tax hike along the line,” said Johal.

“They can’t do all these things they promised without getting the money from somewhere. And I hope they don’t fritter away the surplus.

“Our platform was costed. Theirs was not. On daycare, we are coming at it from a different place, and it’s likely the way their program is delivered will be very different.”

Yap said the “devil will be in the details” and “let’s see what the government introduces.”

“What we wanted to introduce were broad-brush proposals, but it’s how you implement that…that’s what we will be looking at.

“Just as when we were in government, the NDP found ways to critique us, we will be looking closely at them.”

As for how long the knife-edge NDP/ Green government might last, Johal said he learned, in his 23 years as a journalist, not to make predictions.

If something goes wrong with a property sale or purchase in an online marketplace, there is no process, no recourse, no one to go to for assistance, Oudil said, summing up: It’s really buyer and seller beware.

She also said that realtors know their communities in-depth and have access to information — zoning, building codes, neighbouring property histories — that people scrolling through websites wouldn’t have.

As far as Muller is concerned, that simply proves her point that buyers and sellers need better access to all property information.

Suuty won’t feature past sold prices in time for its initial launch on Aug. 1, but will provide other features, including the homes’ average price per square foot.

The issue is a contentious one in Ontario, where Canada’s largest real estate board is embroiled in an ongoing battle with the Ottawa Competition Bureau over online access to housing market data, such as past selling prices for properties, and realtor commissions.

Realtors can and do disclose this information to their clients, but the Toronto Real Estate Board is arguing that sharing such data online raises privacy concerns.

Oudil said in her 25 years working as a realtor, the sharing of sold information publicly just hasn’t been done in B.C., but added realtors readily share the information with those interested in a particular property.

Keith Liedtke, a 12-year real estate veteran with Richmond’s Re/Max Westcoast, said if he were selling his home, he’d use a realtor.

“Realtors are licensed, educated, trained

professionals who know their communities…

They love their communities,” Liedtke said.

“There’s pride of profession there.”

He also pointed out that now more than ever, real estate is a worldwide market.

“If you’re listing on websites like Zillow or Craigslist, you’re not on MLS (Multiple Listing Service),” Liedtke said, meaning you’re not going global.

n Information-gathering tool

Muller acknowledges that Suuty isn’t for everyone, emphasizing it’s meant to be another information-gathering tool for consumers.

Suuty junior marketer and Richmond resident Serene Chen said the service is currently completely free to users. The site has no advertising and includes articles for users such as “How to Value Your Home” and “How Can I Prequalify for a Mortgage?”

Suuty may introduce revenue streams in the future, Chen said, such as charging a fee for feature listings, or moving a particular property to the top of the page.

“But for now it’s ‘proof of concept’ to show people it can work,” Chen said.

Muller wants to eventually make the site even more personal.

After all, in the age of online interaction, genuine human contact is what finally landed her the property she now calls home.

he Richmond condo market is rocketing into the hot zone.

Mirroring the trend across the region, the imbalance between supply and demand in the city’s condominium market is creating heated home buyer competition, according to the latest figures from the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV).

This week, the REBGV reported that residential property sales in the region totalled 3,893 in June 2017 – an 11.5-per-cent decrease from the 4,400 sales recorded in June 2016 (which was an all-time record), and a decrease of 10.8 per cent compared to May 2017, when 4,364 homes sold.

“Two distinct markets have emerged this summer,” said Jill Oudil, president of the REBGV. “The detached home market has seen demand ease back to more typical levels, while competition for condominiums is creating multiple offer scenarios and putting upward pressure on prices for that property type.”

In June 2017, the benchmark price for a Richmond condo rose 27.2 per cent compared to this time last year, to $572,600. The benchmark price for a townhouse in the city is now $766,200 – up 8.8 per cent over June 2016.

Single-family detached homes now sit at $1,650,100 – a 2.8-per-cent decline over last year.

“Home buyers have more selection to choose from in the detached market today, while condominium listings are near an all-time low on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS),” Oudil said. “Detached home listings have increased every month this year, while the number of condominiums for sale has decreased each month since February.”

The total number of properties currently listed for sale on MLS in Metro Vancouver is 8,515 a nine-per-cent increase compared to June 2016 (7,812,) and a 4.2-per-cent increase compared to May 2017 (8,168).

For all property types, the sales-to-active listings ratio for June 2017 is 45.7 per cent. By property type, the ratio is 24.5 per cent for detached homes, 62 per cent for townhomes, and 93.2 per cent for condominiums.

And that’s putting pressure on condo prices.

“Market conditions will vary today depending on area and property type,” Oudil said.

The MLS Home Price Index composite benchmark price for all residential properties in Metro Vancouver is currently $998,700.

This represents a 7.9-per-cent increase over June 2016.

Sales of detached properties in June 2017 reached 1,320, a decrease of 15.5 per cent from the 1,562 detached sales recorded in June 2016. The benchmark price for detached properties is $1,587,900. This represents a 1.4-per-cent increase from June

2016.

Sales of apartment properties reached 1,905 in June 2017, a decrease of 9.6 per cent compared to the 2,108 sales in June 2016.

Last month’s sales were 14.5 per cent above the 10-year June sales average.

The REBGV reports on residential property sales in the region, which includes Richmond, Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, the Tri-Cities, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, South Delta, Whistler, Sunshine Coast, Squamish, and West and North Vancouver.

These are just three of a series of 10 interactive photographic scenes currently on display inside Richmond’s Aberdeen Centre.

The Visual Impossible exhibit is based on the traditional Trompe-l’oeil (French for “deceive the eyes”) technique that brings images to life in three dimensions.

The concept is popular throughout Asia, said Aberdeen Centre’s director of promotion

and public relations Joey Kwan.

The panels, located in the Central Atrium, were created by Hong Kong artist Samuel Tseng and will be on display until Sept. 4.

On Thursday, U.S. tourist Scott Aalgaard took pictures of his daughter Sara, 10, as she enjoyed the artwork. “They’re great,” he said.

Shoppers can collect a set of coasters featuring the original artwork, with a different one given away each week all summer.

ou are only five hours away by car from exploring one of Canada’s most scenic wine regions and one that has more wineries per kilometre than any other: Osoyoos and Oliver.

In other words, you should go there and explore the 39 wineries awaiting your arrival.

A convenient and fabulous spot to stay for your wine visit is the Watermark Resort in Osoyoos.

Overlooking Osoyoos Lake and the vineyards and wineries on the eastern shore, this resort has everything you could want in a deluxe getaway, including a pool with a water slide and hot tub, a fitness gym, a full service spa, barbecues, and a gourmet patio restaurant.

From the Watermark, it’s a fiveminute drive to one of my favourite wineries, Moon Curser.

The Tolley family changed the name of the winery to celebrate American gold miners who smuggled their B.C. nuggets south of the border except on nights when the moon illuminated their illegal activities.

Two of my Moon Curser favourites are the white Rhone blend, Afraid of the Dark ($19.04) and the red Bordeaux blend, Border Vines ($23.39).

But I confess I like almost all of their selections.

Travelling to nearby Oliver, I enjoyed another family winery, Stoneboat owned and operated by the Martiniuk family.

Named after the sledge or boat used by vineyard owners to haul huge rocks from their vineyards, Stoneboat specializes in Pinots.

Their Pinot Noir ($23.90), Pinot Gris ($18.90), and Pinotage ($24.90) are delicious examples.

The Stoned ($21,90), a blend of Pinot and Pinotage has nothing to do with drugs.

Instead it celebrates the rocky terrain that adds minerality and terroir to their wines.

And the Stoneboat bubbly, Piano Brut ($24.90) is extremely popular for adding sparkle to special and just ordinary occasions.

Heading south along the Golden Mile is C.C. Jentsch Cellars on Highway 97.

I was impressed with their Viognier ($22.90) and their red Bordeaux blend, The Chase ($19.90) and was wowed by their rich and delicious Small Lots Chardonnay ($35.90).

Just north of Oliver, we headed west into the hills where Covert Farms is located.

George Covert began farming there in 1959 and his family planted their

first vinifera grapes in 2006.

I really enjoyed two whites, their Pinot Blanc ($19.12) and their Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon ($19.12).

Both are fruit driven with refreshing crisp acidity. Covert Farms is also known for their reds and one I was really fond of was the MDC ($20.66) a luscious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Syrah.

Expect lots of blackberry and blueberry fruit and enjoy it with a grilled rack of lamb.

It’s a great outdoor setting for a picnic and is the gateway to the Bluff Trail climbing McIntyre Bluff, the most prominent landmark in the south Okanagan.

The tasting room is in a rustic log cabin and after you sample you can sit out on the patio and enjoy a glass of their organic wine with cheese and charcuterie from the farm.

In addition to sampling and buying wine, you can also purchase their organic fruit and vegetables as well as take a one-hour farm tour and wine/food pairing for $49.

re you baffled, or even annoyed, by the liquid pooling on top of your yogurt?

Some people suggest stirring it back into the yogurt.

Others suggest pouring it down the drain. I suggest pouring it into a container and saving it — but only (and this is important) if you’ve got plain yogurt, without added ingredients, such as fruit, vanilla, coffee, pectin or sugar.

The liquid that you pour off will become a key ingredient for a food that you may have bought at the supermarket, but which you never dreamed you could make yourself at home — a soft cheese similar to Italian ricotta (traditionally used in Italian cooking in lasagna, stuffed pasta such as ravioli, and also pastries).

The liquid on your yogurt is whey, from the Old English hwæg. When whey is a byproduct of cheese-making, it’s known as sweet whey; when it results from the production of yogurt, it’s known as acid or sour whey.

Italian ricotta is made from sweet whey, which forms fine curds when brought almost to the boiling point.

In Tuscany, the two most common kinds of ricotta derive from cheeses made with the milk of sheep or cows. Cows can provide milk year round, but sheep only during the 80 to 100 days after lambing, which takes place in winter or early spring.

Sheep’s ricotta is rich (about 24 per cent fat) and has a slightly nutty n Home-made ricotta flavour.

The ricotta that you can make at home using the acid whey formed by your plain (and preferably organic) yogurt results from a slightly different process, although the end product is as delicious as any ricotta I ever ate when I lived in Florence.

If you search on the web you’ll find various recipes for making ricotta, but none are as simple as the one I use.

The ingredients are whey from plain, preferably organic, yogurt, best if at least two per cent, and (organic) milk, at least two per cent. The proportions are one part whey to four parts milk. I use 250 ml whey to one litre milk, which makes about one cup of ricotta.

Pour whey and milk into a saucepan and stir well to mix the two. Turn the heat to low and use a candy thermometer to check the temperature. Do not stir the mixture again.

When the temperature is about 150 degrees Fahrenheit, you’ll see curds starting to form. Heat until the temperature reaches 180-190 degrees Fahrenheit. Take the saucepan off the stove and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.

In the meantime place a sieve, lined with cheese cloth, over a small bowl. Use a mesh ladle to scoop out the curds and place them in the sieve. Let the liquid drain off until the ricotta is as moist or dry as you like it.

Slip the finished ricotta into a container and close with a lid. It’ll keep in the fridge for about one week — unless, like me, you eat it immediately.

ith as many as 17 veterans potentially returning, next week’s main training camp and tryout process for the Richmond Sockeyes may appear to be nothing more than a formality.

Not so fast, says new head coach Steve Robinson who is determined to get the storied junior hockey franchise back to serious championship contention.

Richmond has not gone beyond the opening round of the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs the past two seasons and have been eliminated by the Grandview Steelers for three consecutive years. The Sockeyes are guaranteed to be playing next April as host of the Cyclone Taylor Cup but want the provincial showcase event to be part of a deep postseason run.

“Nobody wants to be the guys going into the tournament that have had three weeks off,” laughed Robinson “The big thing now is to reunite that (winning) culture. The one thing that has happened the last couple of years, for whatever reason, the team has got more defensively positioned and become very deliberate.

persona of trying not to lose rather than trying to win.”

Robinson has set the stage for a very competitive camp which starts Monday at the Richmond Ice Centre.

Forty players advanced from the club’s recent prospects camp.

They will be joined by 10 others who received direct invites to the main sessions.

There will be two separate prac-

tice sessions each night to accommodate the 50 players. About 10 veterans will be removed from Friday’s camp finale that will simulate 4-on-4 and 3-on-3 overtime periods.

Robinson and assistants Mike Ball, Jordan Andrews and Brett Reusch will then trim their roster down to around 30 players. They all will tackle the Grouse Grind on Saturday before being invited

back to the pre-season camp in mid-August.

The Sockeyes have already seen enough to offer player cards to forwards Logan Bromhead and Allan Gekham, along with defensemen EJ Shaw and Callum MacDonald.

Local product Kyle Ahlfied was acquired from Port Moody and also was signed.

“When you include the veter-

ans as well and potentially three guys returning from junior ‘A,’ I’m already at plus 23 players,” said Robinson. “But the reality is the composition of the team the last three years wasn’t great. As much as they are all good guys and everyone gets along with each other, I have been brought in to win games. The question is of all those veteran depth guys, how much bump do I get compared to the hungrier younger guys? That’s where the juggling action comes in trying to find the right composition.

“The great thing about me being new is nobody is pencilled in to inclusion or the doghouse that perhaps they were before. Everybody gets a clean slate and that can work for you or against you.

It’s up to them.”

Thanks to his impressive long run guiding Seafair rep teams, including the Midget AAA program, Robinson has had former standout players, still eligible for junior, asking about roster spots.

He also is reunited with goalie Troy Latrace who is going to make the time from his full UBC course load to play for Robinson in his final year in junior. That could fill a potential big void in the crease with last year’s standout Marek Pipes signed by Yorkton of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

With 7:37 remaining, Dylan Nazareth fired a shot on goal. The rebound was corralled by Cristiano Sebellin and he maneuvered his way around the goalie and fired home a backhander.

This completed what the coaches felt was a fairy tale season.

“Having coached this sport for six years I am always pleased when I have a group of players and parents that are awesome and this group was one of them,” said co-coach Gio Sebellin.

“Beyond being respectful of each other and their coaches, they were also respectful of other teams, coaches, and officials. The atmosphere in

the locker room was great before and after games with the kids being kids laughing and bantering amongst each other.

“Watching them grow through the season both skill wise and social wise is rewarding. Also, several of these players remember missing gold four years ago in the same arena by one goal so for them it was extra special.”

The team also includes: Damien Biddlecombe, Nathan Brown, Matthew Chan, Mathew Guzmicky, Evynn Johal, Spencer Manhas, Nathan Selley, Shane Skworoda, Ryan Smith, Maccoy Humphrey, Owen Schroter, Nate Schroter, and Ethan Tang.

Rounding out the coaching staff are: Nicholas Sebellin, John Smith and Dave Humphrey.

This Pee Wee team from the Richmond/South Delta Minor Ball Hockey Association went undefeated during the regular season and through the city playoffs. The remarkable run continued at last weekend’s Provincial Ball Hockey Championships.

The Vipers opened round-robin play with a 3-2 win over Ridge Meadows, then doubled Valley 4-2. A 2-1 triumph against Metro sent them to the semi-finals where Richmond secured a spot in the gold medal game with a 4-2 victory over Surrey.

he 2001 Richmond Islanders capped off a great Canada Day Weekend by capturing bronze at the Lower Mainland Tournament in North Delta.

The girls rep “B” fastpitch team, led by coaches Greg Dee and Eric Gee, went 3-1 in round-robin play — outscoring their opponents 3510 in the process to secure the top seed for the playoffs.

The Islanders played the Coquitlam Classics in the semi-finals in what proved to be a terrific pitching matchup.

Richmond’s Megan Saez Co worked seven strong innings, striking out six batters and allowing no earned runs.

The Classics pitcher held the potent Islanders bats at bay, with the exception of the their first two batters

— Pruistin Ramadhan and Jessica Gee, who went a combined 5-6 at the plate.

Unfortunately, the game was decided in the last inning in which the Classics scored the only runs in a 2-0 victory.

In the bronze medal game, the Islanders faced the South Delta Invaders in another closely-contested match.

The Invaders grabbed an early 4-1 lead after two innings, however, in the bottom of the third, the Islanders tied it as Kate Dee led off the inning with a walk and a stolen base, before being driven home on a single by Ramadhan. Asha Pannu followed with a double, setting the stage for a two-run single from Katy Morris.

The Invaders took the lead again with a run in the top of the fourth but the Islanders

quickly answered back with some great situational hitting.

Tjammie Ko led off with a walk and a stolen base.

Gabby McCormick then advanced Ko to third on a sacrifice fly and Saez Co laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring her home.

In the bottom of the fifth, Dee led off with a single and stolen base, followed by Gee moving her to third on a grounder. Jessica Ryan then singled home Dee to give the Islanders their first lead.

The Invaders threatened to tie the game in the last inning with two runners in scoring position and only one out. However, Saez Co got a strike out and induced a routine grounder to preserve the 6-5 victory and secure the bronze medal.

It marked the fourth time in five years the Islanders have medaled in North Delta, with two golds, one silver and a bronze.

This achievement was truly a team effort but there were highlighted by some great performances.

Gee caught five of six games and led the team with a batting average of .730.

She also scored seven runs and had three RBIs. Ramadhan batted .530 and led the way with eight RBIs, two triples and two doubles; Morris, while pitching 5-1/3 scoreless innings, batted .500 with seven RBIs, one home run, one triple and a double.

Pannu batted .470 with five RBIs, two doubles and one triple; and Saez Co, who pitched in five of the six games, allowed only 10 earned runs while striking out 22.

The Islanders roster also features: Hannah Collins, Lila Crawford and Samantha Williams. Assistants Jeff Collins and Robertson Saez Co round out the coaching staff.

NOMURA, Richard Tadashi August, 1952 - June, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Tadashi Nomura. He passed away peacefully at home in Ladner with his wife and children by his side. Richard faced his illness with courage and strength, inspiring us with his appreciation for life and acceptance of his fate.

Forever loved and missed by his wife Debbie, daughter Melissa (Allan), son Jordy (Jacquie) and grandchildren Takara, Khyden, Liam, and Aria - born the day after his passing - Richard was predeceased by his mother Tsutae, father Toshikazu, brother Yutaka, and brother Hiroshi. He will be lovingly missed by his brother John (Brigit), sister Nancy (Johnny), sister-in-law Nancy D., sisterin-law Lynn, bother-in-law George (Gloria), his many nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Richard was born and raised in Steveston and followed his father and brothers’ footsteps as a commercial salmon gillnetter on the Prime Time III, a boat he built. He loved fishing, was a spokesman for the commercial fleet and proud to take his daughter and son out as deckhands.

After the downturn in the fishing industry he first worked weaving crab traps and then bought a landscaping company. Over time, he joined his love of golf and gardening by working on the grounds crew at Greenacres and later working as the landscaper at Mylora. Always, family was his number one love and he fully embraced his latest role as “Grampa”.

The family would like to thank Dr. Christian Kollmannsberger and his team at the BC Cancer Agency and Dr. David Kason and the many doctors and nurses who cared for Richard at VGH and Delta Hospital.

There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.
