o, what’s your take on this?

Two guys walked into an office. (This is sounding like the start of a bad joke). They were in the throes of a debate.

To settle a point, one asked me the pressing question, “What’s a reasonable amount to spend on a birthday party?” Looking at the other, he added, “don’t say anything.”

Well, I thought, dinner with family would be a couple hundred dollars, maybe add some friends, it could be $500-$1,000.

I supposed if someone went all out and rented a room, it could be a few, maybe even $5,000.

“Tell her what you’re spending,” urged Guy One. “$25,000,” replied Guy Two. I’ll let you catch your breath.

Yes, you read that correctly: $25,000 — on a birthday party.

There will be a live band, free bar and a sea of canapes for 200 people. Did I mention the Great Gatsby-esque fountains and fake statues?

After much “OMG, you’re insane!” came a discussion about money and who has the right to spend what.

Point One: It’s his money, he earned it; he can spend it however he wants.

Point Two: Actually, no, money is socially generated. No single person earns money on their own. It requires a network of support.

Point Three: Regardless whose money it is, whatever happened to balloons and a cake?

Party Boy argued he needn’t feel guilty for his lavish spending because he’s doing a great thing by employing a number of small businesses to make the event happen.

True enough. The more money one earns the more one can contribute to economic activity. Ironically, this same person is against raising the minimum wage.

His other point is that he works hard and has a skill set that is well rewarded.

Again, true enough. If he’s able to spend more than the annual income for a fulltime, minimum wage worker (that would be $21,000) on a birthday party he, indeed, is being well rewarded — but there’s the rub.

I don’t believe everyone should be paid the same, but the discrepancies we sometimes see can make my head spin.

On Wednesday night, I was at McMath’s graduation ceremony where I heard two remarkable students give the valedictory speech. What stood out was not their accomplishments, but their recognition of all who helped them realize those accomplishments.

An individual’s grit and talent counts for a lot. But, as those bright lights of our future said, it takes a community.

This really isn’t about how one celebrates their birthday. It’s about how we, as a society, recognize people’s value — financially. We may agree it takes a community, but the type of party one can throw seems to says otherwise.

History needs helping hand Exploitation fuels capitalism Dear Editor, For several years, my mother has volunteered to maintain the beautiful garden outside the Richmond Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop on Chatham Street.

Inside the bright red doors, the shop is run by more than 100 volunteers, who work to raise money for health services in Richmond.

Recently, I learned of the thrift shop’s entry into a contest run by the National Trust of Canada to, hopefully, fund some much needed repairs.

Though I am in support of this contest, it fills me with some sadness and frustration that an important part of Steveston heritage needs to turn to online crowdfunding to be restored.

The shop was originally a church built in 1894 and has been a fixture of Steveston ever since. At a time when Richmond is profiting from mass development and real estate expansion, it is shameful that a historic building in our community

Fipe Wong mentioned that she is unable to contribute to society with the amount of work she does to earn money.

She’s not alone.

The need to make money just to survive has become so overwhelming for many their ability to contribute to society is hindered.

However, low wages may still exist to ensure such hindrance. If people were given higher wages that allowed them the time to contribute to society, people might choose not to work as much, and thus

The fact that exhausted employees are working double jobs due to low base wages to make ends meet is a prime example of how capitalists continue to exploit peoples’ labour.

Blended families: to speak or not to speak

A thoughtful article in The Globe & Mail last week discussed some important concerns about Estate planning in blended families.

The 2012 Census found that 12.6% of Canadian families were blended (I expect it is higher now). The writer considered the children and whether to involve them in planning. The feeling was to at least speak with them.

In my opinion, parents can either make their plan and tell their children after, or ask their views during their planning. It probably depends on the assets they have and the relationships they have with their children.

The writer also seemed to say that children should be treated fairly but not necessarily equally. While I agree with that general view, it will be different for every family, and has to be discussed carefully.

The article also examined distributions and tax issues. Assets such as RRSPs are probably best passed on to spouses, because that can be done tax-free, while other assets such as a cottage could be passed to children.

The writer also stated that a talk with their chosen Executor is useful. While that is true, the main question in a blended family should be whom to appoint. Appointing one or more of the children (some of whom are not biological children) may not always be appropriate.

One law for Mayor ill-informed What really produces the wealthy? on need for bridge the bottlenecks?

Dear Editor, Re: “Alleged gaming racket busted in Richmond.” News, June 16.

It is understandable and extremely commendable for the government to intervene when illegal money laundering and kidnappings occur.

However, according to many critical criminological theories, the law enforcement acts on behalf of the bourgeoisie. There are many casinos within British Columbia that are sanctioned by the government and pay a certain amount of tax to keep running.

Thus, “gaming houses,” which are essentially casinos that do not generate income for the government or capitalist production, are considered illegal.

That is to say, those that are able to make a living for themselves, will always be enslaved by corporate production.

For example, sales representatives or factory producers will never earn the value of the product itself; instead the top one per cent will earn most of the revenue.

It is exemplary for the government to stop illegal activities that are “inherently” deviant, such as kidnapping, but it is unwise to exploit the masses for the few that hold the means for production.

Let’s recall there once was a term known as the “commons.”

Dear Editor, It appears that Mayor Malcolm Brodie is ill-informed about traffic exiting the George Massey Tunnel on the north side.

According to a provincial government comment about a year ago, the majority of the traffic exiting the Tunnel is headed to Richmond and much of that which is not, exits Highway 99 and travels eastward to the Knight Street Bridge and into Vancouver.

Brodie’s idea that a bridge will move the current tunnel congestion north to the Oak Street Bridge is more fiction than fact.

It is unclear from Brodie’s rantings why a bridge would suddenly cause congestion that already exists with the George Massey Tunnel. Moreover, what has the height of a proposed, BC Hydro line crossing have to do with vehicle traffic?

Additionally, Brodie’s comment about the bedrock being deep seems to be a red herring if the problem is, as he insists it is, the vehicle traffic.

As for twinning the existing tunnel, why, when more than one government report suggests that its life is limited. The comments from some that the George Massey Tunnel has upwards of 40 years of life remaining might well be true, but there have been comments from others who state that the tunnel is on its last legs and needs replacing.

The “selfie” that Brodie spouts is more about himself than seeing the big picture that is the flow of much-needed vehicular traffic into and out of the Lower Mainland and not only those who reside south of the Fraser River — a rather lot of traffic enters Canada at the USA/Canada border as do thousands of American tourists.

Those dollars that they provide generate employment for many, including Richmondites.

Dear Editor, “Why replace the Massey tunnel when it just moves the problem to the Oak Street Bridge?”

This is a common battle cry of those (including your mayor) who are ignorant of a very real problem and who don’t pass through the tunnel on a daily basis.

For a moment, let’s follow your ill-informed logic, shall we?

If the total traffic north-bound through the tunnel is not the bottleneck and is, in fact, holding traffic back just enough so that the Oak Street Bridge does not get lined up, then how come traffic is lined up coming south in the afternoon?

Think about it. You say improving the tunnel crossing will only move the problem to the Oak Street Bridge, but what about those coming from west and east on Steveston highway looking to go south?

How about those coming from the Knight Street Bridge, Westminster Highway (west and east), Highway 91, Sea Island Way, and the airport going to Seattle?

Yes, we never hear about that

side of things, do we?

Why? I’ll tell you why, because it does not support your narrative that improving the tunnel is a waste of time, money, and effort.

Here is another question for you: If one of the reasons for the lineups are just that there are too many commuters, then why is it that some of the worst times to travel the tunnel is 10 a.m. (north) and 2 p.m. (south)?

Don’t tell me there are a lot of people working from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (If so, I want one of those jobs.)

The reality is that there are many different destinations after you pass through the tunnel, north or south, and many roads to get you to your destination once the crossing is made.

Every one of those feeder routes leads to or from the tunnel; that’s why it is called a bottleneck.

I’m not saying a new bridge is the answer, but at least it’s one solution to a very real problem.

wo people were taken to hospital after being exposed to an unknown substance at Canada Post’s sorting facility in Richmond.

Just after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Richmond Fire-Rescue responded to a call from the facility on Sea Island, next to Vancouver International Airport.

According to fire-rescue, a package was discovered broken and a powder had spilled out, causing the pair of workers to have breathing problems and elevated heart rates.

They were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure, according to a statement from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

A further 12 people were being observed at the scene, but none were showing symptoms. A partial evacuation of the building was undertaken.

The substance in question was determined to not be a bio hazard, nor a narcotic.

Six fire vehicles and 21 firefighters were on scene, including a full hazardous materials deployment.

Two CBSA officers found the package “during the normal course of their duties,” according to a Canada Border Services a CBSA spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Although Richmond RCMP and B.C. Ambulance also responded, CBSA took the lead on the incident as the spill was in the international area of the Canada Post facility.

YVR, Musqueam sign ground-breaking deal Airport will share profits, create jobs and scholarships for band ALANCAMPBELL Staff Reporter

A

ground-breaking deal was signed Wednesday morning between the Vancouver Airport Authority (VAA) and the Musqueam Indian Band.

Under the terms of the 30-year agreement, which was sealed in a hangar at YVR’s south terminal, the VAA will: fund 10 scholarships per year at $10,000 each for Musqueam members to attend recognized educational institutions or training programs; provide apprenticeships and new employment positions within the VAA and create a revenue-sharing arrangement between YVR and Musqueam to the tune of one per cent of the airport’s annual revenue going to the band.

In terms of the financial benefits, based on 2016 figures, the revenue given to the Musqueam would be approximately $5 million, to be funded through YVR’s non-aeronautical revenue, as opposed to the Airport Improvement Fee. As for the environment, YVR said it will “work with Musqueam to identify areas in and around Sea Island for restoration and enhancement, in accordance with a recent study.”

Before Musqueam’s Chief Wayne Sparrow signed the deal with the airport’s president and CEO, Craig Richmond, Sparrow’s sister and former band chief, Wendy Grant-John, gave an emotional speech.

“This agreement is a significant and historic

event for all British Columbians,” Grant-John said.

“This is not so much about us, but for those who went before us. Chief Johnny addressed the Royal Commission in 1913 and he delivered three paragraphs that are right at the heart of every Musqueam.

“He said, ‘All the game and fish has disap-

peared; it is the white man who came to this country and destroyed our game and our fish…this is the grievance I bring to the commission today.’

“When I read those words, I knew we had a new beginning here…This is at the end of two years of negotiations and it’s one of the most emotional days I’ve ever had.”

Sparrow said the main point of the agreement was “friendship,” adding that he has had to reassure doubting members in his Musqueam community about the deal. “…but I believe the words of the (VAA) board and of Craig’s (Richmond) staff.”

Richmond, talking of “deepening ties” with the band, said VAA, as a non-profit organization, re-invests “all the proceeds back into the community and we want to share that success with the Musqueam.”

The deal is officially named “The Musqueam Indian Band - YVR Airport Sustainability & Friendship Agreement.”

“This agreement provides Musqueam with important education and employment opportunities at YVR, a voice in future development, environmental enhancements and restoration and financial support that will allow our people to continue to grow our economic foundation and re-invest in our community,” added Sparrow.

Richmond said that the move was an “exciting way forward with our friends” that’s “not only good for our business — it is the right way for YVR to move forward in the community we serve.”

t’s official. RAPS – Richmond’s animal shelter – has changed its name and is now called the “Regional” Animal Protection Society.

British Columbia’s Registrar of Companies this week approved a change of name for the old Richmond Animal Protection Society.

“The change represents the reality that we serve animals from far beyond the City of Richmond, many of whom come to us because of our no-kill commitment,” said Eyal Lichtmann, CEO of the now Regional Animal Protection Society (RAPS).

The change of name coincides with the launch of a capital campaign to complete construction of the RAPS Regional Animal Hospital, as reported in the Richmond News in the spring.

The hospital, anticipated to open by the end of 2017, will eliminate RAPS’ external veterinary expenses and, according to the organization, “create revenue to support all

the programs RAPS operates to save and improve the lives of animals.”

“This is the final component of a revolutionary ‘RAPS Model’ of no-kill animal care,” says Fearn Edmonds, president of RAPS. “We are creating a sustainable model of community-supported, social enterprise no-kill animal care.”

Once fully operationalized here, the RAPS Model – which includes sheltering, animal sanctuaries, fostering, spaying and neutering and social enterprise – will be “codified and shared,” added Lichtmann, with other no-kill animal care agencies across Canada and internationally, potentially “saving the lives of…millions of animals.”

“This is an entirely new approach to animal welfare,” he said.

“One that is the right thing to do – economically and ethically.”

Wednesday better for Board R

ichmond’s Board of Education has voted in favour of moving public meetings from Monday to Wednesday, starting this September.

Meetings will also move to every second and fourth Wednesday of each month, instead of the first and third.

Trustee Ken Hamaguchi suggested the move is designed to allow trustees more time to read through their agenda packages, which are only handed to them on Friday afternoon.

It also brings more consistency to the schedule as there are often holidays on

a Monday. There will aslo be fewer conflicts with committee meetings, noted Hamaguchi.

Trustees Jonathan Ho and Alice Wong voted against the change. Hamaguchi was joined by trustees Sandra Nixon, Eric Yung, Debbie Tablotney and Donna Sargent in favour of the change.

The change also means board meetings will not conflict with City of Richmond public hearings.

The board meets at 7 p.m. each meeting.

Childcare spaces scarce as classrooms fill up Graeme Wood

ne step forward, two steps back. Why is childcare so difficult?”

No, that’s not exactly how one of children’s entertainer Charlotte Diamond’s latest songs goes. That’s how Richmond resident Cathy Sichewski describes the “childcare crisis” in the city, and particularly in Steveston, where her daughter attends Homma elementary.

There, a YMCA before and afterschool program is being forced to move to nearby Byng elementary this September, and in the process lose eight of its 36 licensed spaces.

The program is one of five based out of an elementary school that needs to be moved, as more classroom space is required to fulfill smaller class size requirements, stemming from a Supreme Court of Canada ruling last November that stipulated the provincial government has illegally increased classroom size since 2002.

The other four programs affected are at Currie, Errington, Tomsett and Wowk schools.

Sichewski said she understood that all the children at Homma have been taken care of, thanks to nearby Generations Day Care tak-

ing in a handful more students, to meet their capacity. Meanwhile, the 28 remaining kids will attend Byng.

Still, the situation is not ideal, said Sichewski, as kids will need to be bussed to and from Homma, and Byng could soon meet capacity issues, as well.

Sichewski said parents felt broadsided by the news in May. It was only this week that parents learned the new spaces at Byng were available.

On June 5, a Richmond School District memo noted Tomsett’s program had yet to find a space.

Meanwhile, the other four were works in progress. Errington’s program, for example, may be moved to Sea Island elementary.

Sichewski said the City of Richmond ought to step in and provide more childcare spaces at Steveston Community Centre. She said she was pleased to hear Coun. Alexa Loo listen to her concerns.

Loo is city council’s representative on the childcare advisory board and liaison to the district. She is also the only council member with school-age children.

“Everyone understands the needs and concern,” said Loo. By and large, she noted the city acts as a facilitator for childcare spaces in each neighbourhood.

“Our community centre programs

are not to take the place of people’s businesses. The role of the city is not to be in the business of running every business in town. It’s in place to pick up the slack if there’s a need,” said Loo. Help is on the way in Steveston, with the development of a 37-child daycare space on No. 2 Road, built

by Polygon at Kingsley Estates. The $3.3 million facility, paid for by developer fees, will be run by the city.

The city also procures a childcare fee from all new developments. The money goes in a pot to build future spaces.

But the city has also come under criticism for squeezing out commercial and industrial spaces zoned for childcare in Steveston, in return for lucrative residential homes, hampering the opportunities for the private sector.

“This is a huge impact to the community and considering the city is putting high-density housing in the area, they are not doing enough to put in childcare,” said Sichewski.

Loo said parents should be vocal at their local community associations to express the need for childcare.

“Looking forward, we are building a new community centre and we’re going through a needs assessment,” said Loo.

W

hen the congregation met for one of the first times under the new roof of the freshly built St. Joseph the Worker Catholic church back in 1967, the mood was a little tense.

“The entire group only filled up the first three pews and they were incensed that Fr. Agnellus (Pickelle, the first Franciscan Friar to serve the parish) had built such a massive church that they’d never be able to fill,” said Fr. David Poirier, who currently presides over the Williams Road church that celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. “Today, we fill the place five times every weekend.”

The church was actually dedicated in a ceremony on April 30, 1967. But due to a myriad of activities on the church calendar during the Easter period this year, the decision was made to hold the 50th anniversary celebrations in June.

Poirier said the congregation currently consists of 2,800 or so families which make up about 11,000 people. That’s a far cry from the day when Fr. Agnellus decided it was time to consider moving from the original site in Steveston.

But to where?

According to a pamphlet outlining the history of the church that was produced for the 50th anniversary, Fr. Agnellus asked the municipality of Richmond where the largest population growth was expected.

From that, it was decided that a church should be located somewhere around Williams Road, between No. 2 Road and the West Dyke. After all, in 1960 the population of that portion of Richmond was 8,429 and was forecast to rise to 18,116 by 1970 — 1975.

So, in 1961, the parish purchased 14.4 acres of farmland along Williams Road for $28,000 and rented it out to create an income stream until construction began.

In 1964, the original plans for the church called for a bell tower, a convent located to

the rear of the church and a rectory. Estimated cost was $200,000.

With a mere 131 or so active families in the parish at that time, fundraising was a daunting task. Plus, the location was then considered to be in the middle of nowhere.

But a pledge campaign, started in early 1965, helped eventually raise enough to retire the cost of the land. Then the work started to get the actual church building constructed, with costs estimated at a larger than original estimate of just over $240,000.

With annual pledges starting to wane, a fiveacre parcel of land at the rear of the property was sold to help with construction costs. And in 1966, work started on the building that some mistook, during the early construction phase, as an ice rink or collapsed barn.

The first mass was on Palm Sunday (March 19, 1967).

Since then, the parish has grown to include a rectory that was built beside the church in 1977. And the adjacent, K-Grade 7 school has been in operation for 29 years. Enrolment there is now 226 students.

The 50th anniversary celebrations kick off Friday (June 23) with a strawberry tea for the original parishioners.

“There are still a few left,” Poirier joked.

“Plus, we included some of the older parishioners who were instrumental in establishing the church.”

On Saturday evening, the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Vancouver, Michael Miller, will be on hand for an anniversary mass at 5 p.m., which will be followed by an anniversary dinner.

And on Sunday there will be a parish picnic on the St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Elementary School grounds.

Asked what he felt has been the reason for the parish’s enduring character, Poirier said much of it has to do with the commitment of its parishioners.

“Plus, there’s been a sell-off of Richmond’s farmland and the resulting development of neighbourhoods around the church,” Poirier added. “Even now, there are new housing starts every time you turn around.”

he’s known as the “Angel of Whiteside elementary” — and for good reason.

Everyone at the multi-cultural South Arm school knows Charlotte Cheung as the lady who helps and, despite not being employed at Whiteside, is apparently as much of a fixture as the teachers themselves.

According to the school’s parents, Cheung, who has a son in Grade 6, devotes most of her free time to not just volunteering at Whiteside, but goes out of her way to make people smile and surprise them on a daily basis.

And, after making it into the final 10 of the Roots Canada competition, she will find out this weekend if she’s won a $10,000 donation to the charity of her choice.

“It’s an honour and, yes, I was very surprised; I’m not looking for something in return when I do these things. They must think I’m nice, I guess,” laughed Cheung, when asked why she thought she was nominated.

Cheung said that being an immigrant — she was a high school teacher in Hong Kong before coming to Canada in 1999 — she realizes how difficult it can be coming to a new country and learning a new language, compelling her to step in and help students and their family members at Whiteside.

“People inspire me and I always want to help them as much as I can,” she said.

“I think I’m a really good observer and I see what people need. I also love to surprise people.”

According to Cheung’s nominator, she doesn’t just talk about how to be kind and inclusive, but demonstrates it daily.

“Charlotte is there to translate for the Cantonese-speaking grandmothers who don’t understand the new rules. Parking lot too busy? She’s out there, reminding what needs to be done. No. 3 Road McDonald’s marks 50 years In 1967, Richmond location became first McDonald’s outside United States GRAEMEWOOD Staff Reporter

he iconic — and now historic — golden arches on No. 3 Road, just south of city hall, are once again beckoning hungry Richmondites to come visit the first McDonald’s restaurant established outside of the United States.

On Wednesday, during a VIP event, franchise owner Joe Guzzo re-opened the restaurant’s fourth re-build on the site, which initially opened over 50 years ago, on June 1, 1967.

On Friday, the restaurant planned to open to the public, offering 67 cent hamburgers.

Decked out in vintage McDonald’s attire, including a white paper chef hat, Guzzo thanked family, friends and colleagues for the opportunity to stay on No. 3 Road.

“This is one massive piece of land that, probably, investors might not make a restaurant. As you can see there are towers nearby and we had options in keeping with how the land might be used,” noted Guzzo of the prime location that is actually zoned for highly sought-after, medium-density residential.

vice-president for Western Canada, in particular, for keeping the site a restaurant.

“She said this was the first McDonald’s site; we have to find a way to keep this restaurant,” noted Guzzo.

To commemorate the day, Hansen was handed a plaque with newly-discovered tiles from the original 1967 building.

During excavation of the site earlier this year, explained Guzzo, construction workers discovered the red and white tiles in a pile, buried beneath the ground.

“For me it’s a little gold mine. I thought wow, red and white tiles, these were really symbolic of the building,” said Guzzo.

Some of the tiles are placed next to the No. 3 Road sidewalk, beneath a new, commemorative plaque.

Guzzo described his 42-year career at McDonald’s as one dedicated to people.

“What a ride it’s been. Good thing I didn’t listen to my family,” quipped Guzzo. “I’ve got nine brothers and sisters and a lot of times they’d say, ‘why are you working at this place? Go do something else!’ Most of them are in construction, so they’ve done very well, but that wasn’t for me. It was all about the people and that’s the one thing I like about McDonald’s; it’s the people.”

He also thanked city council for ensuring the sleek, refurbished golden arches were declared a historic artifact that should be preserved.

On behalf of Mayor Malcolm Brodie, Coun. Bill McNulty accepted a plaque and Hamburglar necktie from Guzzo. The two joined Ronald McDonald and the real Hamburglar for a ribbon cutting.

The restaurant’s revered history at this location will be displayed in the lobby, on a large screen — next to the digital order takers — that will scroll through historic photos of the site and Richmond.

The site was once home to an intricate outdoor playground that has always stoked many memories among longtime Richmondites. The new restaurant will have a smaller, indoor play area.

While the building will seat fewer people than the old one, there will be a double drive-thru and ample greenspace for new trees and shrubs surrounding an outdoor picnic area. Better kitchen exhaust and noise-cancellation technology should provide relief to condo owners to the north of the site.

At the opening, Richmond North Centre MLA Teresa Wat, the Minister of Multiculturalism, said the restaurant was an example of an American cultural contribution to Richmond’s landscape.

McDonald’s Canada has about 1,400 restaurants in Canada, six of which are in Richmond.

McDonald’s Corporation has about 37,000 locations worldwide and pulls in about $25 billion in gross revenue annually, according to its most recent financial report. It is also one of the largest land owners in the world, as franchisees typically lease from the company.

According to a 2015 Business Insider report, McDonald’s serves more than five billion burgers a year, requiring 25 million cows. Getting back to the farm

Sleep Country Canada’s customers, including those picking out their mattresses online, will be better served after the opening June 13 of the company’s new distribution centre in east Richmond.

According to the firm, the 70,000-squarefoot facility on Nelson Road, which is a consolidation of two distribution centres into one centralized location that almost doubles capacity. That will provide space for regional growth and allow, “continued focus on growing areas such as lifestyle bases, platform bases, accessories in addition to our mattress business and newly launched eCommerce business,” said Sieg Will, senior vice president of operations. “Our entire Vancouver team is excited about their new home and their ability to service our customers even better.”

know where their feed is coming from. Is it local, or is it coming from the U.S. Essentially, we’d like to see as small an environmental footprint as possible when it comes to raising the meat.”

In terms of ethical farm practices, Staatman said that for beef, Meatme.ca prefers cattle wrangled by horses to keep anxiety levels in check.

“We also want to work with farmers that use local abattoirs to lessen the amount of time animals spend in transit, which can be stressful on them,” he said.

“And personally, I think that people really are what they eat,” Staatman added. “Eating healthy is a really important thing. And looking at what is presented in conventional stores, it’s not ideal.

“I found that we have these healthy, ethical sources nearby. But people had this disconnect about buying from local farms because it is too much work. That’s why they go back to the factory farms and their products that are found in the supermarket.”

In terms of pricing, Staatman said Meatme.ca is slightly less expensive than the higher end products offered in grocery stores.

“We provide a better quality product for a price which is competitive,” he said, adding customers buy shares in an animal which sets a minimum order size.

Overall, Meatme.ca hopes to keep small farming operations relevant by hooking them up with an alternate stream of

“Because if those farms can’t grow, or even sustain themselves, we may lose them altogether and have big corporations buy them for other types of farming,” Staatman said.

Keen on the aspect of re-establishing a connection between consumers and farmers is longtime farmer Bill Zylmans, who raises his own, small number of Black Angus cattle on his east Richmond property and sells the meat from his farm store.

Currently, he is not one of the suppliers to Meatme.ca which is so far limiting its list of suppliers as it begins to slowly grow a roster of clients.

“Once upon a time, everyone had a farming background or connected to a family farm,” Zylmans said. “It’s only in the last three or four generations that people are not raised on farms and they buy their eggs and meat at a grocery store.

“We’ve lost that connection and this seems like a way of re-connecting those dots.”

Agri-tourism is attempting to help bridge that divide, Zylmans said.

“Farmers are opening up their properties to let the public see who they are, market their products and put the public’s mind at ease that we’re doing the right things,” Zylmans said. “And for the most part, everyone is trying to do things properly. We have a lot of rules and regulations around food and livestock already that don’t allow for mishandling and abuse of animals.”

New LED lighting for YVR’s airside activities is proving to be a bright idea. The new lighting system by Musco Lighting significantly reduces YVR’s power consumption, expands lighting coverage and increases safety for pilots, air traffic controllers and ground crews. It also marks the first time an airport in North America is using an adaptive dimming system based upon gate usage. The LED lighting was retrofitted onto YVR’s existing structures, gives a more uniform distribution and features patented glare control technology so that high-quality light is applied only where needed and darkness is preserved where light is not intended. This improves operational efficiency by eliminating glare. The new apron lighting is adaptive based on gate usage, meaning that lighting levels will increase and decrease based on the gate schedule in order to save power when not in use. It is expected to save 715,000 kilowatt hours per year, which is the equivalent of powering 72 residential households per year.

Vancouver start-up company is using digital age connectivity to get consumers back in touch with where some of their food comes from.

Meatme.ca, which started to include Richmond customers in its service this month, has its customers buy into sharing orders of beef, chicken and lamb that has not only been raised without the use of hormones and antibiotics, but in a humane manner, as well.

The service is the brainchild of entrepreneur Victor Staatman, who co-founded Meatme.ca after he moved to the Lower Mainland two years ago from the Netherlands and found it was quite a chore to source meat providers who ticked all of the boxes he valued.

“I was looking to order some ethically raised beef from local farms and thought I’d go to a website and just order it,” he said.

“And I couldn’t find a proper source. So, I started asking around and finally got in contact with a farmer up north and managed to place an order, essentially by emailing him.”

What Staatman was told to do was meet the farmer in a parking lot in North Vancouver on a pre-arranged day where he would deliver the meat to him and a group of other clients.

“I met him, handed over my paper cheque and thought to myself that while some people might be OK doing this, it would n Meatme.ca co-founder be better for the Victor Straatmann whole community and the environment to source someone more local and make the entire process more convenient,” Staatman said.

That’s how Meatme.ca was started and is now billed as the Tinder for meat in its ability to make connections with buyers and suppliers.

But establishing that convenience factor is only part of the equation, Staatman said “For us, it’s also about the quality of life for the animals and their feed. We like to

ike the old joke goes, I spent a year in Winnipeg last weekend.

Winnipeggers, please forgive me…but it’s not exactly a thrilling city. The point of the visit was a wedding, which was beautiful. We also went to see where my parents and grandparents lived in the 1920s.

It’s crazy to think my dad’s parents raised four kids in a tiny house above their barber shop. Not surprisingly, the property is empty now and sports a big “To Lease or Buy” sign.

Out of curiosity, I texted the realtor to see what the property is selling for. At first, he didn’t respond. When I texted again, I mentioned I was visiting from Vancouver and I guess his eyes went ka-ching, ka-ching, knowing how pricey B.C. real estate is.

He immediately responded — $269,000.

It’s hilarious, since the average house price in that North End Winnipeg neighborhood hovers around $120K. Can you imagine?

It was kind of depressing to see the North End still looking…well… Depression era.

There were a few areas that had been maintained or were new, but overall, it looked like nothing had been built or renovated since my father was born there in 1916.

Visiting our old relatives (ranging in age

from 90 to 95) we tried to gather as much family history as we could. The most riveting stories were about the Depression, when it wasn’t unusual for struggling families to farm their kids out to other relatives, when they were too poor to feed them.

We also heard how three matrons in our family took 12 kids out to one cabin at Winnipeg Beach for the summer, while the fathers worked in town. Keep in mind there were no indoor toilets or washing machines.

According to the relatives, the kids had a blast. The mothers, not so much.

The best story we heard was about a young cousin who had to share a bed with his cousin (my dad) up at the lake. The cousin happened to be a bed-wetter, and peed all over my dad.

Note: the bed-wetter later went on to become a Rhodes Scholar (not a urologist).

While not exactly a thriving metropolis, Winnipeg does have some great delicatessens and bakeries, of which we visited many.

On one particular day, I had nothing but a 13-layer mocha torte for lunch. Not the whole torte…just one piece.

Seven pounds later, my husband Harvey and I arrived home. Fat and happy.

Did I mention that it was only a five-day trip?

Let the dieting begin. For real.

Delicatessens aside, Winnipeg might just be my favourite place to leave.

Sea journey one of revelations Blast off at Brighouse library’s Launchpad Book Review

M

ichael Ondaatje’s The Cat’s Table recounts the journey of a fictional 11-year-old Michael on a ship from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) to England in the 1950s.

The journey itself is a coming of age. Michael is being shipped from a free-spirited barefoot life in his native homeland to a life of formal education in England.

Along the way, he meets Cassius and Ramadhin, both boys traveling alone, and their adventurous spirits drive them to explore every aspect of their ship and its passengers.

Aboard the Oronsay, Michael is assigned to Table 76 which quickly becomes known as the Cat’s Table — it’s the least privileged table and is situated the greatest distance from the Captain’s Table.

While many first class guests dine with the captain, the Cat’s Table is host to an eclectic array of odds and ends.

Along with Cassius and Ramadhin, the Cat’s Table introduces Michael to Mr. Mazzapa, a musician with a checkered past who has “hit the skids,” Miss Lasqueti, a quiet woman who may have secret government connections in the U.K., and Mr. Daniels, a man growing a bountiful garden full of riches and poisons in the hold of the ship.

Other passengers reveal themselves along the

way.

Asuntha is a needy, deaf girl who seems to attract mothering types. There is also the prisoner, who is brought out in chains to walk the deck in the late evening.

The three boys, on their own for the first time, are thrilled by their freedom and make the most of it. They hide in lifeboats to eavesdrop on romantic entanglements and passionate disputes. They sneak onto the deck at night to observe the prisoner and his evening constitutional. They race along the deck and throw deck chairs into the pool.

Michael is even tricked into helping another passenger rob the first class cabins.

But there is more to the boys than hi-jinks. Ramadhin is quiet and careful — a product of his weak heart. Cassius is loud and boisterous. And Michael is somewhere in between. But all three form a bond that they can’t forget.

The narrative becomes progressively serious as some of the quirky passengers reveal a dark side. As Michael grows older, he must integrate these matters into his consciousness.

Did things really happen this way? Or are they the exaggerations of an 11-year-old? As Michael makes the physical journey to a more serious world, he makes an emotional journey, as well.

t was a result that has been three years in the making and the Vancouver Pacific Wave Synchronized Swim Club’s Junior team is far from done.

A group of nine dedicated girls culminated their competitive season with a fifth place finish at last month’s Canadian Open Championships in Toronto. It was the highest placement ever in a team event on the national stage for the the Watermania-based program and provided further gratification for the massive commitment made by the athletes and coaches.

You have to go beyond the final standings and scores to get a better idea what Pacific Wave is up against each year.

While the club is doing an outstanding job of providing an elite synchro program in Metro Vancouver, its main competition at the national level comes from sportspecific regional training centres that has the luxury of hand-picking athletes from

There are so many things we have to do to help get us there. It was a super proud moment for me.”

The goal going into the competitive season was to actually be top three at nationals. That will now be the objective next year and Kalin says improving the team’s

routine score from 75.100 to 80.000 would get them there.

The girls will continue the same level of dedication that was taken to another level this season. Even the coaches went above and beyond.

Kalin was pregnant through the months of training and, with the help of her sister, took her three-week-old son with her to nationals. She didn’t want to miss it.

Radocaj helps Canada earn silver at U16 FIBA Americas

Not a bad way to start your summer if you happen to be Victor Radocaj.

The Richmond basketball standout returned home in the early hours of Wednesday morning from Formosa, Argentina where Canada finished second to the United States after falling 111-60 in the championship game.

The Canadians reached the final after earlier wins over Argentina (75-61), Paraguay (79-71), Venezuela (80-43) and Puerto Rico (81-66) in the semi-finals. No team was within 40 points of the powerhouse Americans.

“Obviously a disappointing ending, but overall I’m really proud of the group.

For them to qualify for the worlds and get a silver medal is still a great accomplishment and we look forward to next year,” said Canadian head coach Craig Beaucamp.

Radocaj, a 6-foot-7 forward, was the lone B.C. player named to the 12-player Canadian roster that was finalized after an extensive selection process in Toronto. The Grade 9 McMath Secondary student still has another year of eligibility with the U16 program.

He came through the Richmond Youth Basketball League (RYBL) before moving onto the Richmond Olympic Oval-based DRIVE Academy. Last summer, he played for Basketball B.C.’s U15 provincial team.

■ Richmond 2006B Islanders girls fastpitch team made its tournament debut in Fleetwood with a solid fourth place finish. It had been a slow start for the team’s first year together as two earlier tournaments were cancelled due to rain. Even though it was pouring rain during this weekend, it didn’t stop the girls’ enthusiasm and perseverance. The team includes: Stephanie Sofikitis, Kiyomi Tien, Makaela Parker, Ulani Cyr, Takara Orange, Aika Wang, Kristin Law, Madelyn Wong, Vanessa Chan, Bella DeShaye, Rebecca Wosk, Laurel and Forgeron.
