t was at the Richmond Arts Awards held last month where I first met Shelley John, whose story is featured on page 13.

I was presenting the Arts Education Award and she was one of the nominees. More importantly, we happened to be sitting next to one another. (Note to reader: Careful whom you sit beside; you may end up on the front page of the paper.)

At the end of the ceremony, we talked about the awards, but the conversation wandered off into kids, parenting and babysitters, all mundane stuff — at first.

I’m not sure exactly how it happened, but suddenly the small talk took a turn and we were into invitro fertilization (IVF), single parenting and what constitutes a family.

John had tried the conventional route to meet a man and have a child, but it wasn’t happening and time was running out.

At 42, she decided to try IVF, using donated sperm and eggs. The fertilized egg was then implanted into her womb, and she carried the child to term.

The result is a beautiful baby boy named Kazuki.

What defines family for John is a child (whom she’s not biologically related to), grandparents, friends and caregivers.

The Grade 6/7 teacher even explained to her students that “Ms. John is having a different type of family.”

As John said: “I’m a single mom, but I’m not raising this child alone.”

One of my favourite authors is Barbara Kingsolver. A theme that runs through many of her novels is how families are created. She challenges the conventional model of mom, dad and 2.5 kids.

Kingsolver’s “families” are often thrown together out of circumstance, need and an inate desire to care for one another. They’re rarely biological, but they are a powerful network of support.

In The Bean Tree People, one of her early novels, a young woman suddenly finds herself with an abused child; the two start on a journey where they find family in the most unusual places — including a used tire store.

The title of the book is also not insignificant. The bean tree, also known as the wisteria vine, has a symbiotic relationship with bugs called rhizobia, which move up and down its roots transfering nutrients.

Kingsolver’s point is that the bean tree, like people, can thrive in harsh environments but only with a network of support. And that support can come in many and varied ways.

When it comes to family, it’s not that biology doesn’t matter, it’s just that love, loyalty and taking care of one another matter a whole lot more.

Our CPP has an appeals tribunal

It is unclear how many people are aware of the Canada Pension Plan system for applying for certain remedies, such as disability benefits.

Many Canadians are injured every year, and without other insurance coverage, they can apply for CPP disability benefits. In 2016, the average monthly CPP disability benefit was $933.82. If the application (made to Service Canada) is successful, the wait for benefits is about four months. If not, ask for a reconsideration.

If that does not bring the desired result, a person can appeal to the Social Security Tribunal. The process is less formal than Civil Litigation.

Last week, the Globe & Mail published an article describing how, in the last year, about half of all Canadians who were denied CPP disability benefits were successfully appealing them. That is cause for concern, and some are saying that the adjudication process is flawed.

Earlier this year, a widow (whose 38-year-old husband died from an aggressive cancer) applied for CPP survivor benefits and was denied, because she was under 35 when he died, and she did not have children. She now has to wait 30 years to get the survivor benefits. She has no insurance and no work benefits of her late husband to draw on. She is challenging the rule.

Canadians should be aware of this aspect of our CPP, and should be prepared to use all avenues to pursue remedies.

Get advice if you need, but don’t give up because of a single denial of a benefits application.

Go talk to your strata Dear Editor, Re: “Ticketed during Bike to Work week,” News, June 2, 2017.

My family resides in the 3100 block of Francis Road and, like many of our neighbours, we have been frustrated with the parking situation on our street.

Although our row of detached houses have double garages, we do not have any space for visitor parking – be it for a friend, family member, gardener, electrician, etc.

The parking situation outside our front steps has been a terrible nuisance whenever we need the parking space, particularly when our visitors are elderly, have small children, or need to carry heavy equipment.

Given that the parking space is directly in front of our residences, it is unacceptable for those visiting our homes to have to park a block down the street simply because those from the townhouses behind us do not want to use their own visitor parking stalls.

The bylaw clearly states that one cannot park in front of someone else’s residence for more than three hours between 8 a.m.-6 p.m., supporting the idea that because these parking spaces are in front of our residences, we should have first priority in their use.

Dear Editor, Re: “Residents angered over spaces,” Letters, News, June 7, 2017.

In regards to Mr. Dennison’s response letter to the issue of parking on Francis Road: If it was Mr. Dennison’s intention to help improve the current parking situation he and his neighbours are facing, I would suggest opening a direct dialogue with his neighbours rather than attacking them in such a negative tone in a public forum.

While I respect the right to free speech and making your opinion known, having such a letter published in the Richmond News only casts Mr. Dennison and his neighbours in a very negative light. Using language such as ‘you violators’ immediately creates unneeded tension and Mr. Dennison very clearly wants to make it an ‘us against them’ situation.

While I don’t know anyone living in this neighborhood personally, the tone in this letter certainly makes it seem like a very unfriendly and hostile place to live.

As mentioned in the article, such time limits are to prevent people from utilizing these spaces for their own personal conveniences, which is precisely what people such as Mr. Ribi have been doing.

Additionally, he mentions in the article that there is “no shortage of street parking around [the house] during the day, with the streets remaining practically empty.”

By looking just from our windows, we can confirm that this is not the case.

Although the number of parked cars obviously varies, as the day progresses and particularly on the weekends, our street is congested from end to end with parked cars. Some of these cars do not move for days and remain parked directly in front of our doors.

Although we commend Mr. Ribi’s attempts to contribute to the environment, performing a good deed does not excuse the inconvenience one’s actions brings on others.

This is an issue that the townhouse strata members need to discuss and resolve on their own by properly utilizing the visitor parking stalls that they have available.

It is ironic that in the same sentence Mr. Dennison accuses Mr. Ribi of ‘crying a river,’ he expects to elicit sympathy because his gardener cannot find a spot to park.

With all of the negativity in this world, the hostile hypocrisy of Mr. Dennison’s letter does absolutely no good. I wish a fair and speedy resolution to the situation, but it seems to me this will not be possible if it is to be approached in such a negative manner as this.

Time to un-muzzle MLAs Dear Editor, Re: “Who do MLAs really serve?” News, May 26, 2017.

Letter writer, Ken McLennan is absolutely correct, under the current voting system, MLAs speak for their parties more than for their voters. Electoral reform holds the promise to change that, but only with the ranked ballot in multi-seat districts, formally known as STV. That is the system recommended by the Citizens Assembly in 2005.

They did so primarily to give MLAs an incentive to speak for their voters.

Soon, British Columbians may have another opportunity for electoral reform through a referendum. There is one big problem: the STV system will not find acceptance in rural ridings. For electoral re-

form to succeed it requires a mixed system — ranked ballot in multi-seat districts for urban areas and ranked ballot in single-seat districts for rural areas.

Such a mixed system suits B.C.’s unique representational challenge, namely few people, unevenly spread over vast geography.

The ranked ballot with a mixture of seats per district was used in both Manitoba and Alberta from the early 1920s to mid-1950s and for the 1951 and 1952 B.C. elections.

Its discontinuance was at the hands of politicians. The voters had no say. If we do have a say, let’s make sure to select a system that rewards MLAs for representing their voters more than their parties.

Good on McNulty for change Dear Editor, Re: “Mind your sign language,” News, June 7, 2017.

Congratulations and thank you Coun. Bill McNulty for addressing the elephant in city hall.

It takes courage to refuse to continue drinking the Kool-Aid. McNulty moved an amnedment along with the support of four other councillors in spite of ongoing and chilling legal threats, which, by the way, failed to deter their conscience. The mayor and three other councillors seem to be still sitting on the fence and in the paralyzing grip of political correctness.

What a ridiculous arrguement to have

been having for so long. It is this kind of issue that calls into question the effectiveness and worth of multiculturalism. Ask yourself, is this right? The French-speaking people of Quebec concerns were heard and implemented. Is there a difference here? What are we really afraid of? If this brings a court challenge then we all should welcome it to help move us forward with clarification and perspective. Clearly, it does not promote community harmony to continue as is.

Richmond is rapidly becoming a mono culture without English. Its time we acknowledged that truth and move forward.

Media changing Dear Editor, As I normally do from time to time on a Sunday morning, I visit the gas station

to get gas and the Sunday Province newspaper.

To my surprise, I could buy gas but not a newspaper in English — only C Chinese newspapers are now available at the No. 3 aand Williams Road Petro C Canada station.

The last time I looked, Richmond was still in C Canada. Something is w wrong here. Am I out of step w with the times?

Muslim group against sharing washrooms GRAEMEWOOD

A

group of Muslim parents is calling on the Board of Education to ensure no transgender or gender non-conforming students end up in the same washrooms as their hijabwearing daughters.

Khalid Fatih spoke on behalf of a group of parents calling itself Muslim Parents of Richmond at Monday night’s board meeting.

“For some of our daughters and women in our Muslim community, wearing a hijab is the core culture and a strict religious practice.

Our daughters have been observing this for modesty and privacy, and they do not feel safe changing their clothes in the presence of biological males, since they remove their hijab only in the presence of other females,” stated Fatih in his petition to the board.

Fatih argued such a right is protected under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

“We demand segregated washrooms, change rooms and field trip accommodation for biological males and females use be clearly written in details in the Code of Conduct and strictly implemented to ensure safety for all school students. Our daughters must not only be safe but feel physically, emotionally, and morally safe when they use washrooms, change rooms and field trip accommodation,” stated Fatih.

While the school district’s Code of Conduct is presently being updated to include mention of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI), chair Debbie Tablotney understood Fatih to be speaking more specifically to a separate SOGI policy, to be drafted this fall, to raise understanding of the issue.

She noted the policy does not promote any

particular identity but serves to inform teachers, staff, students and parents about the special circumstances of different identities.

“The ultimate goal is to help our students who identify in different ways to feel safe,” said Tablotney.

She said the board received the Muslim group’s demands as feedback and told Fatih that anyone can share more thoughts with the policy committee.

“Myself, I’m always willing to listen to concerns. That creates good policy when you incorporate thoughts and concerns of all parties. And in bringing their concerns forward they might learn things that maybe they didn’t know,” said Tablotney.

She said the district is carefully considering how to ensure there are washrooms that are safe for anyone who may not feel comfortable in typical boys or girls ones.

Any new school, said Tablotney, will likely feature separate or single-stall facilities.

Meanwhile, staff will have to make do in older schools on a case-by-case basis considering it would be too expensive to upgrade washrooms in every one of them.

“Anyone uncomfortable can be supplied with a single-stall washroom, where they would feel safe. It’s being done already to find a safe space to change,” said Tablotney.

The board’s implementation of a SOGI policy is actually well behind the vast majority of other B.C. districts.

Last February, a group of parents called Parents Care told the board it opposed the policy. Parents claimed the policy is unfair to other minority groups and that homosexuality is a choice.

Trustees Jonathan Ho and Alice Wong voted against forming a SOGI policy while the Richmond District Parents Association supports it.

Fentanyl crises hits home Illicit drug overdose death rate triples in Richmond Graeme Wood

T

he rate of illicit drug overdose deaths in Richmond has tripled in the first four months of 2017, over last year — the largest spike of any “health service delivery area” in the province, according to the BC Coroners Service.

“We were quite concerned of the rise last year. Now we’re way past that baseline,” said Richmond’s medical health officer Meena Dawar, of the public health emergency that is now on pace to kill close to 1,500 British Columbians this year, which would be a 50 per cent increase over the recordsetting death toll in 2016.

Granted, Richmond’s death rate has been historically low and the sharp spike is more likely to yield a larger fluctuation. Regardless, Dawar said there is serious concern among health professionals, police and other public officials that Richmond has witnessed 12 deaths in 2017, up to April 30, when it saw just 11 in all of 2016. For perspective, between 2007 and 2015 there were 25 total deaths.

Dawar is now calling on the City of Richmond, Richmond School District, Richmond RCMP and other community groups to meet with her staff at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) to once again discuss the community ac-

tion plan that was drawn up last fall.

Fuelling the deaths is drugs laced with fentanyl, which is being smuggled into the region from overseas locations such as China.

“The [drug] market is so swamped with toxic material,” said Dawar.

Dawar said VCH has increased its addiction services so that there is no waiting list to access Transitions, an assessment, treatment and referral clinic for addictions. Meanwhile, the Drug and Alcohol Resource Team at Richmond Hospital is now working seven days a week, instead of five.

“If an individual comes in, they can be bridged to care immediately.

Before, often people get lost before an appointment,” explained Dawar.

Richmond Hospital, Transitions (8100 Granville Avenue) and the Anne Vogel Clinic (8160 Cook Road) are offering free take-home naloxone kits and any help, upon request, said Dawar.

The drug naloxone is a rapid treatment for opioid overdoses.

According to the coroner, there appears to be no signs of the epidemic slowing since 2012, when there were 269 illicit drug overdose deaths in B.C. Dawar said she could never have imagined a situation such as this.

She noted during the mid-1990s a health emergency was declared in

Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, when provincial death tolls were about 300 per year.

She said harm reduction strategies, such as safe-injection sites stabilized and slightly lowered deaths up to 2010.

Along with law enforcement measures and education, Dawar maintains that harm reduction strategies are working. The main problem now is the introduction of the powerful opioid fentanyl and even more powerful carfentanyl.

Noted the coroner: “Illicit fentanyl– detected deaths appear to account for the increase in illicit drug overdose deaths since 2012 as the number of illicit drug overdose deaths excluding fentanyl -detected has remained relatively stable since 2011 (average of 305 deaths per year).”

Dawar has no specific data on who is dying in Richmond, but provincial data shows victims are mostly male (83 per cent) and between the ages of 30-59 (72 per cent). Most deaths (54 per cent) occurred in private residences.

“It is of great concern that despite the harm-reduction measures now in place and the public-safety messages issued, many people are still using illicit drugs in private residences where help is not readily available,” said chief coroner Lisa Lapointe, via a news statement on May 31.

B.C.-wide bust targets Richmond Alan Campbell

A

high-level RCMP investigation into cocaine trafficking came to a climax in Richmond and has led to four suspects being charged.

The 14-month probe by the RCMP’s North District Federal Serious and Organized Crime Unit (ND-FSOC) resulted in a raid at a Richmond home last June and the arrest of local man Tijinder Singh Sidhu, 46, who now faces multiple drug traffic charges.

Also allegedly found at the residence was approximately one kilogram of cocaine, two vehicles and cash.

The raid was the result of an investigation into trafficking in Prince George and Chilliwack that began in April of 2015.

The warrants carried out by Mounties in Chilliwack saw the seizure of approximately one kilogram of cocaine, a large amount of cash and a vehicle.

In Prince George, police recovered a cache of firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, body armour, a cocaine press and cash.

Nearly a year later, four people, including Sidhu, have now been charged in connection with the drug busts.

Ravneet Singh Basi, 44, of Kamloops, Fabian Fraser Cuthbert, 45, of Prince George, and Katherine Pearl Cuthbert, 73, of Prince George, were charged along with Sidhu.

During the investigation, RCMP’s ND-FSOC worked in partnership with Prince George RCMP, Chilliwack RCMP, Richmond RCMP, Delta Police, Kamloops RCMP, Surrey RCMP, Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit and other federal support units.

“This was a very successful enforcement action taken against this group responsible for supplying cocaine to Northern B.C. which will have a significant impact,” said RCMP ND-FSOC Staff Sgt. Glen Breckon.

Deeper dredging not necessary: Port Graeme Wood

ort of Vancouver says there are no plans to deepen the Fraser River, to accommodate larger vessels, “within the foreseeable future,” following a recently-completed analysis of port development options.

The port said in a news release late last month that dredging to deeper depths “would be extremely costly” and require extensive environmental study and consultation.

“The river, as it is now and using existing terminals and port lands, can meet trade demand for decades to come,” stated the port.

The new assessment contrasts with past statements by port officials, including in 2014 when Surrey Fraser Docks expressed interest in deepening the main channel from 11.5 metres to 13.5 metres in depth.

The port’s president and CEO, Robin Silvester, wrote to the Ministry of Transportation in April 2013 stating the current depth of the George Massey Tunnel limits the maximum channel depth of the river.

“The tunnel deters new investment to expand,” stated Silvester.

But with the new analysis, the port now states that even as commercial ships are increasing in size, “there are limitations to the Fraser River that restrict its ability to accommodate larger ships including height, depth and width restrictions.”

“We have determined that with more intensive use of the port’s existing terminals

and further development of the port authority’s existing industrial lands along the water, the Fraser River will be well positioned to accommodate Canada’s growing trade without deepening the channel,” said Peter Xotta, vice president, planning and operations at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

Deeper dredging has been a controversial issue over the past five years. Environmental experts note it can imperil flood protection measures, such as dykes, and destroy freshwater access for farms. Critics of the planned George Massey Tunnel replacement bridge claim the port played a key role in deciding to remove the tunnel, in order to eventually dredge deeper.

The port stated on May 25 that regardless of dredging needs, or lack thereof, it is supportive of the bridge.

The port also released a backgrounder of its analysis in which it stated the port was consulted by the government on the crossing to ensure any structures do not impede current or future shipping.

But the port also reiterated that the new bridge, if built, will nevertheless limit the height of ships passing underneath and the width of the river naturally restricts the length of ships, as well.

Vessel numbers along the Fraser River are forecast to increase from about 620 in 2008 to about 750 by 2026, stated the port.

If all goes according to present plans, those increases will include new jet fuel, thermal coal and LNG shipments.

“village-scale” Save-On Foods is coming to Steveston, according to Platform Properties’ principal Kyle Shury, whose company plans to lease 20,000 square-feet of retail space to the popular grocer, thus transforming the area’s shopping options.

There was strong interest from grocers to establish themselves as the anchor tenant at The Roderick, a new 75,000-square-foot development that is to replace the now-demolished Rod’s Lumber Supplies on Third Avenue, between Moncton and Chatham streets.

Save-On will be on the ground floor along Chatham Street, said Shury, who will fill the Moncton side with three other retail shops.

There will be 50 parking spaces built below, and 32 relatively large condos (1,3002,600 square feet with rooftop terraces) on the second and third floors.

Julie Dickson, director of public affairs for Save-On Foods of the Overwaitea Food Group, said while there are no exact details as to what the store will look like, she expects a full complement of services at the small-scale grocery store, such as a bakery, deli and meat department.

“We will be creative with space, but there will be a full complement,” she said.

This will be Overwaitea’s fourth location in Richmond. By comparison, the Save-On at Terra Nova is about 35,000 square feet.

Shury said construction is expected to finish in early 2019. He said Platform Prop-

erties is still waiting for a building permit but all other hurdles have been cleared.

Dickson said her company has been interested in moving into Steveston for some time.

“I think anytime the neighbourhood and demographics supports this offering, and if we can help with the community’s growth, we’re interested in doing that,” said Dickson.

She said the store will be tailored to the wants and needs of local residents, much like their other stores in B.C. “We figure out locally what items of interest the customers may have. Managers have latitude in stocking shelves,” explained Dickson.

The store could employ at least 100 people, she said.

The store will provide an alternative to the

family owned and operated Su family-owned Super Grocer, which has been a staple for decades in Steveston. The new store also exerts pressure on other grocers who may be contemplating moving into the village, such as at Imperial Landing where that developer, Onni Group, and the City of Richmond continue to negotiate rezoning of empty buildings presently zoned for maritime use.

Shury is to open a sales centre at Steveston Real Estate this month for the condos. He expects boomers looking to downsize from detached homes to be a primary customer.

“We’ve seen a strong interest from people selling their single-family homes as they age. There aren’t many homes in Steveston. We’ve seen a flight of those people out to Tsawwassen and White Rock,” said Shury.

ore rubber may soon be hitting the road in Richmond’s taxi industry, after a city council committee approved the use of 14 more cabs.

Richmond Cabs Ltd (RCL) has successfully applied to the city to introduce 10 more conventional taxis and four “accessible” taxis, boosting their fleet to 112, the majority of which serve YVR. In its submission to the city, RCL – which already had the go-ahead from the provincial Passenger Transportation Board (PTB) – said it needed more cabs to maintain its 10-minute service promise and also to combat the imminent threat of ride-sharing operation Uber.

To allow the additions to take place, the city had to amend the business licence bylaw to increase the maximum amount of taxis in Richmond to 172.

In approving the application on Monday at city council’s general purposes committee, Coun. Carol Day said that she firmly believed in “opening this up,” as the “service isn’t good” in Richmond.

A report by the PTB also indicated that demand for RCL taxis has grown by 10 per cent for regular cabs and 25 per cent for accessible cabs, due, in part, to the opening of the McArthurGlen shopping mall.

As well as being one of the primary service providers at YVR, RCL has the exclusive contracts for the Sheraton, Marriott and Hilton hotels in Richmond.

Home dream comes true for family-of-5 Alan Campbell

tanding on a small patch of sand in the middle of a building site, James Rai is wearing a smile as wide as the Fraser River.

“This is going to be my room,” beamed 24-year-old James, while marking his “territory” in the south-west corner of the plot on Ash Street near Blundell Road, where his family’s dream will soon become reality.

In about a year’s time, the Rai family — Sharon and Jeff, along with their children, James, Caleb, 17, and Ruth, 15 — hopes to have moved into their very own 1,180-squarefoot, three-bedroom newbuild, complete with wheelchair access.

It’s thanks to the work of charity Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver, with an assist from the B.C. government, which sold at a discount the 25,000-square-foot site in 2013 in order for six, affordable homes to be built.

The transfer allowed six families, including the Rais, to become first-time homeowners through the Habitat for Humanity program, which provides safe and affordable housing.

Families invest 500 hours of labour (called sweat equity) into the building of the home in lieu of a down payment and are financed with affordable, no-interest mortgages.

It’s an opportunity that, three years ago, wouldn’t have entered the imagination of mom-of-three Sharon Rai, who, along with other family members, cares for teenage son

The fact that the family is currently living in a three-bedroom basement suite and have left 11, mostly bad, landlords behind them in 17 years of living in B.C. makes their next move even sweeter.

“We are all very excited. It’s our home. No landlord and we can stay here for as long as we want with no one being rude to us all the time,” said Sharon, a clerical supervisor with the BC Cancer Agency, while attending Habitat’s construction launch this week.

“Caleb is very shy, but I can see that he is very excited also. This is a hand-up for us, not a hand-out. Nobody has given us this opportunity. I was willing to pay, but we can’t get a mortgage.

“All we need to do is put in 500 hours of voluntary work on the building of the house.

My husband wants to do this, he’s ready to start straight away.

“This is a dream come true. I’m pretty emotional right now about it all.”

couple of years ago, Caleb, said his mom, was in hospital with pneumonia. “We almost lost him and, after that, we started to get more help. He’s doing OK, but there is no cure,” Sharon explained, describing how Caleb has a hospital-type bed in his room; which he shares with big brother James.

That help, said Sharon, was kicked off after an emotional visit to the office of Richmond MLA Linda Reid.

“Caleb had come out of hospital and we had to move again. I was crying in Linda’s office and asking for help; I didn’t know what else to do,” she said.

“She directed me to apply to Habitat for Humanity in 2014 and we’ve been waiting for this moment ever since.”

Caleb, who attends Cambie secondary with Ruth, was diagnosed at four-years-old and has been in a wheelchair since he was eight.

His condition, said his mom, has got progres-

sively worse since, and a nurse comes in weekdays and overnight to help the family.

The vast majority of the rented accommodations the Rais have stayed in over the years have been bereft of proper wheelchair access, so moving into a custom-built house will be “incredible” said Sharon.

As well as Reid, Dennis Coutts, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver, attended this week’s launch, along with Mayor Malcolm Brodie and members of city council.

Wee dog Donut ready for a new home Alan Campbell

T

he little dog found last week locked inside a suitcase and dumped in a ditch could be on his way to a new home.

More than a week after a dogwalker found the toy poodle alive inside the luggage near Walmart, Donut has been cleared for adoption, as no one has come forward to claim him.

There was concern Donut would have to spend several weeks or months languishing at the Richmond Animal Protection

Society (RAPS) shelter on No. 5 Road until the BC SPCA investigated the cruel abandonment.

But with the case apparently going cold and Donut, according to RAPS’ CEO Eyal Lichtmann being the “friendliest dog in the world,” the animal charity had no hesitation in putting him up for adoption.

“We don’t want him to be sitting in here for weeks and months,” Lichtmann told the Richmond News on Wednesday.

“By our policy, once a dog has been here for seven days, it becomes the ownership of RAPS and we can put it up for adoption.

“He’s such a nice dog but, understandably, he doesn’t like being in a cage or in a shelter; we want him to get adopted as soon as possible.

“We’re going to start looking through the applications right now; we have a few on file and plenty of interest on social media.”

There had been talk of Donut’s rescuer, Graeme Barrett, taking the loveable pet into his home, but he already has dogs and his strata will only allow two.

Barrett was commended for saving Donut’s life, after hearing weird noises coming from the un-

dergrowth near Walmart at May and Alexandra roads, while he walked his dogs in the baking hot Sunday afternoon of May 28.

Unable to open the case at the scene, Barrett gently wheeled the container back to his house nearby, before opening it in his garage with the help of the Richmond RCMP. Loving the life of lone parenthood

aiting for the phone to ring, Shelley John knew deep down this was probably her last throw of the dice.

At 42, she had been there and got the T-shirt for all the conventional routes to motherhood that life presents.

Long-term relationships, blind dates, online dating - you name it, John, an elementary school teacher, had given the mating wheel a good spin.

Adoption, as she discovered, was a complete non-starter as a single woman.

In her early 40s, and after two rounds of costly, artificial insemination with donated sperm failing to cast nature’s magic spell, there was only one path left to tread.

“All that was really left was donor eggs and sperm; my eggs were just getting too old,” chuckled the now 44-year-old John, a Grade 6/7 teacher at Cook elementary.

“I kind of knew in my head that this was it, not least because it’s very expensive. IVF (in vitro fertilization) was $7,000 each time (the rest was paid by her medical plan). Buying donor eggs (online from the U.S.) was $10,000 for six.

“I’m not sure what I would have done if it didn’t work this time; but I couldn’t keep throwing money at it.

“I’d sort of prepared myself, mentally, that, if it didn’t work this time, it was OK; I love my life and it’s OK not to have a child.”

W

hen the phone did eventually ring, John finally got the news she’d been dreaming of for years. She was pregnant.

“It was more a sense of relief than being happy,” said John from her townhouse in central Richmond.

“I got a phone call from the clinic. I knew they were phoning, but didn’t know what they would be telling me.

“Before the call, I was trying to be positive, but this had happened twice before, so I was prepared for the worst, although still hopeful.

“When it sunk in, I reminded myself that I still had to be cautious, as it was very early.

“I told my parents and, of course, they were happy for me. This was going to be their first grandchild. This might be their only grandchild, although my brother, who is 37, could still shock us on the relationship front.”

A few weeks shy of nine months later — the birth was a little premature — bouncing baby boy Kazuki was born, weighing five pounds and nine ounces.

Explaining Kazuki’s diverse “roots,” John said the sperm donor was Chinese and the egg donor was Filipino.

Before making the purchase online, John said she got to know all about the donors’ medical and family history, as well as information about maternal and paternal lines, as far back as grandparents.

“I found out about the egg donor’s hobbies and there was a photo of her as well. No name, though.”

The eggs, she said, were shipped to the fertility clinic in Burnaby where the procedure took place.

Sperm banks in Canada are almost exclusively “populated” from the U.S., where men providing the sperm get paid. In Canada, no money is allowed to change hands for such a “transaction.”

John, herself, was born to a Canadian father of Chinese ethnicity and a Canadian mother of Japanese ethnicity. It was from her mother’s Japanese roots that she named her now very healthy 10-month-old son.

Asked why she didn’t try to purchase sperm and eggs to match her parents’ ethnicities, John said she tried, but getting her hands on Japanese donors was next to impossible.

“There simply wasn’t any Japanese donors out there,” she said.

“There wasn’t even that many Asian donors, so there were very few choices in that respect. It was the U.S., so most were African American or Caucasian.

“But people say (Kazuki) does look like me.

“My parents (who are in their 70s) come over every day; they are over the moon and are so supportive. It’s now that I realize I need them more than anything.”

A

lthough she made a decision to become a single mom long before conception, she told the News that it certainly wasn’t through a lack of trying.

“I wasn’t thinking about this when I was 36 and kind of thought it might happen the ‘normal’ way,” she said.

“Even my doctor, back in my 30s, would say that I ‘needed to get on it now.’ But I still didn’t feel ready; I was still in the ‘research’ phase and I wasn’t ready to give up on ‘Mr. Right.’

“I was in a relationship for a while, but that ended and I realized I couldn’t hang around too much longer (if I wanted to have a family).

“I did try to date a few while I was going through the early stages of the process, but I was wary of guys not being interested while I was going through this.

“I was set up on a blind date one time, but I told my friend to make sure she told the guy my situation.

“I had a great date and, at the end, I told him that I was surprised that he was OK with me going through the (fertility) process. He was like ‘what?’

“He knew that I had planned to use donors, but thought I had changed my mind.”

A second, similar date, added John, was “OK with it at first.”

“But he then decided he wanted to have his own kids, which is totally understandable.

“The same thing happened when I went to online dating sites; they all wanted their own

kids, which, again, is totally fine.

“But I don’t think guys really get the age barrier thing for women. And by that point, nothing was going to change my mind (about getting pregnant through donors).”

A

sked what kind of reaction she tends to get from people when they learn about the choices she made to start a family, John said it has all been positive.

“Everyone has been great. Most of them know what I’ve been through to get here and are very supportive,” she said, noting there were times, when she couldn’t get pregnant, that she got quite depressed.

“I even told the students (when I got pregnant). They were shocked at first and some thought it was an April fool.

“But the librarian at the school has some great books about modern families and I just explained that Ms. John is having a different

type of family.

“However, it was amazing how much they knew about gay couples having a baby and surrogate donors.

“I was surprised, given that most people in this community are of Chinese ethnicity, which tends to be quite conservative.”

Acknowledging that some people, mostly men, might question the fact that she’s “opted out” of having a male physically involved in the conception and upbringing of Kazuki, John said she’s certainly not aware of any resentment.

“I’ve never heard a negative reaction; maybe they’re keeping it to themselves, who know?” she said.

“People are generally quite surprised, but I’ve not heard anything weird.

“And it’s not like I hadn’t tried the conventional route!”

A

vintage car restoration legend is making his return to Richmond for the Sockeye Run Car Show this Sunday.

Harry Robertson, a longtime Richmond resident, who retired to Vernon eight years ago, is bringing one of his rare 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruisers to the car show.

Robertson is fascinated with the big Mercurys of the 1950s, especially the 1957 Mercury and Monarch series called the “Big M,” when the Ford Motor Co. sponsored the popular Ed Sullivan Show.

Robertson’s interest has spanned the spectrum of lovingly restoring Mercurys (he has owned 50 over the years, and presently owns two) to driving them in demolition derbies at Callister Park in the 1960s, when you had to have the biggest, strongest car of all!

After the photo-shoot for the calendar, Robertson turned his attention to getting that car ready for its debut at the annual Vancouver Motorsport Show at the Pacific Coliseum.

Ironically, the Coliseum is located directly across the street from Callister Park, the scene of 48 demolition events over five years, from 1966 through 1970.

Another recognition for Harry’s automotive workmanship came his way when the Ford Motor Com-

pany celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2003.

They wanted 100 cars and a car from every year.

There was a car from 1903 and for every year of production since that came to Dearborn Michigan.

Harry brought his beautiful Monarch to represent 1957. Only 185 Turnpike Cruisers were built in Canada and only six are known to exist today.

took over after that and is still chairperson for this year, the 27th annual event.

On June 1, Robertson was nominated to be inducted into the Greater Vancouver Motorsport Pioneers Society. The ceremony will be Sept. 23 at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. There’s more information on the Pioneer website, GVMPS.org.

Confidence boost for businessman Derrick.

When a Hearing Specialist told Derrick Highet he had a hearing problem the businessman’s first reaction was actually one of relief.

and creativity that surrounds food production in that community.

Attendees will also have a chance to see what a working farm looks like in modern times through farm tours conducted by our knowledgeable staff.

We’re envisioning a warm sunny evening surrounded by the gorgeous flowers, fruits and vegetables growing on the farm and the equally warm smiles of our neighbours.

Grants connect neighbours

lock parties, cultural celebrations, and storytelling circles are just some examples of nearly three dozen community projects taking place in Richmond this summer, all of them funded by the Neighbourhood Small Grants (NSG) program, according to volunteer organizer Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), In partnership with the Vancouver Foundation, the NSG program gives Richmond residents an opportunity to apply for small grants, up to $500. With the funding, residents can

carry out small community projects, with the goal of creating stronger connections between neighbours.

“Since 2014, when we first partnered with the Vancouver Foundation to bring NSG to Richmond, the program has grown considerably,” said Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of RCRG. “More people are applying for grants, and the applicants are increasingly diverse. As such, we’re seeing projects that not only connect neighbours, but also bring Richmond’s cultural communities

In 2017, a total of 31 NSG grants were awarded to Richmondites, together valued at $14,970. In addition, the program awarded four Canada 150 grants, valued at $1,800, to projects that will help mark the country’s 150th birthday.

“The total number of grants and the overall value are both new records,” said Gavsie. “It’s very encouraging, because it shows the inclusive spirit of our community. Neighbours want to get to know each other, and build relationships.”

S

ometimes in life it’s the chance encounters, the passing fancy or unintended circumstances that end up making the most significant impact.

For longtime Richmond doctor Peter Quelch, his decision to attend a then, lesser-known medical conference 31 years ago — essentially to fill some time while visiting family in his hometown of Montreal — helped bring palliative care to scores of patients in Richmond over the years.

“The only conference going at the time was on care for the terminally ill,” said Quelch, who retires at the end of July after serving as a GP in Richmond for 44 years. “Palliative care started in Britain during the late 1960s and came to Canada in the 1970s. So, it was still relatively new. And I went to the conference expecting it to be a little bit depressing, probably not too interesting because it was about dying people.

“And at that time I didn’t have much expertise in pain management and how to use opioids properly.”

But Quelch was in for a shock.

“It blew me away,” he said. “That conference was the exact opposite of what I expected. It was the best conference I ever went to. It was exciting and even uplifting because I met so many great people who had such enthusiasm for palliative care, since it was a new discipline.”

He came away inspired and returned to Richmond where he found others in the local health field who were interested in providing that type of care locally.

From 1992 to 2004 he was the director of palliative care for Richmond Hospital and established the palliative care unit.

“With the help of a lot of good people, over the next few years, we began providing services,” Quelch said.

It was a far cry from kind of medicine he began practicing in the early 1970s when he, his wife, Janet, and then

“We drove across Canada and our intention was to come to B.C. for a year just for a sense of adventure,” he said. “And, of course, like most people, we fell in love with the place and have been here ever since.”

After a short stint in North Vancouver, Quelch started his general practice at No. 1 and Francis roads in 1973 with one partner.

“I tried to get a job at Lion’s Gate Hospital and they basically told me to get lost,” he said. “In those days it was the opposite of what we have now, which is a shortage of doctors — there were too many GPs and not enough openings.”

Back then, it was also hard to rent an apartment if you had a young child, added Quelch. “You could get one if you had a dog, but harder if you had a child. So, the only place we could find an apartment was Richmond.”

He took over the practice of a retiring doctor here and since then has been a mainstay locally.

“When I first came, Richmond Hospital had been open for about five or six years and it had one administrator who had one secretary and that was about it, apart from about eight to 10 specialists,” said Quelch, who was feted at a surprise retirement gathering at the end of May. “But it was mostly run by GPs who manned the ER until the full-time ER doctors arrived in the 1980s.”

Not too long afterwards, palliative care locally started to take shape. At the start, the bulk of patients were those suffering with terminal cancers and incurable neurological diseases.

“Now, the whole definition of palliative care has broadened,” Quelch said. “We listen to what the patient’s values and wishes are and have a team approach, helping with the care and interacting with the family.

“It’s not just the physical aspects but the physical, spiritual, emotional and psychological ones we treat.”

Along the way, Quelch’s efforts, and those of his peers, helped establish the Rotary Hospice House on No. 4 Road.

Last year, the 10-room, facility celebrated a decade of service in an area of medicine that doesn’t always get the recognition others do. Part of that is due to the subject of end of life care that can make some feel uneasy.

“A lot of people say to me, ‘Don’t you find it depressing, upsetting and feeling burned out?’” Quelch said. “But if you have a patient who has lung cancer, is short of breath and experiencing a lot of pain and you can control the majority of their symptoms and make them comfortable to the point they can focus on living their life rather than focusing on their pain, you get great feedback from that.

“There’s a big reward for a doctor to see their patient being more comfortable.”

Four firms feel the love for employees

om Orange, president of Fuggles and Warlock brewery, will have to wait for reprieve from the red tape he faces to freely sell his product across provincial borders.

Provincial leaders met in April and signed a new Canada Free Trade Agreement, however, it ignored lifting barriers on inter-provincial alcohol exports and imports.

As he waits, he will continue to look to the East. And why not? The company’s sales in Taiwan, South Korea and Japan are increasing exponentially. This, as the company navigates trying to enter the Ontario market through that province’s liquor control board.

“Ontario is a big deal for us,” said Orange.

“But there are significant costs attached to going to Ontario,” he added.

And Quebec? Forget about it, said Orange.

“There are lots of regulations that make it difficult to get into that market and so we decided to push into Ontario and stop there for now,” said Orange.

The problem is that many provinces own lucrative monopolies on controlling the distribution of alcohol. Only Alberta is relatively free of regulations.

“The tricky part is each province has a different model. You’ve got provincial liquor markups and each province is different. So, we have to adjust prices in each market,” explained Orange.

Calgary Conservative MP John Barlow noted, following the trade deal, that the Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act continues to restrict “the ability for producers to sell outside their own province unless they are granted permission by a liquor board of another province.”

So, getting that permission in each province has been a task for Fuggles and Warlock.

Meanwhile, the B.C. and Asian markets are ripe for the taking as craft beer popularity explodes here, and there.

“Month over month we see an increase in sales in B.C.” said Orange.

In B.C., Orange has stopped counting how many private liquor stores Fuggles and Warlock can be found in — it’s in the hundreds. Same goes for the number of pubs and restaurants where you’ll find at least one of the company’s five core beers: Pixel Pils (pilsner), Bean Me Up (stout), Personas West Coast Common (ale), The Last Strawberry Wit (lager made with Fraser Valley strawberries) and Destinay IPA (pale ale).

“We’re always reviving our selection and thinking what could join our core lineup. Our number one priority is to keep the quality high,” said Orange.

Meanwhile, in the taproom, there are extended opening hours (11 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday; 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Sunday to Wednesday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Thursday) and seasonal sour beers and other creations, not in the core lineup.

“The rate of sale is good,” said Orange, who was a beer importer/exporter in the Asian market prior to opening Fuggles and Warlock in late 2015.

“I knew what made these guys (Asians) tick,” said Orange.

Aside from the company’s offerings, one of the things that has made Fuggles and Warlock so popular in corner stores in Seoul is the branding and labelling, which features galactic and anime superhero designs by beer sommelier Dan “Fuggles” Colyer.

It looks good and tastes good, noted Orange; in Seoul, its Destiny IPA has routinely held the top spot at one of the premiere bottle shops for best IPA, as decided on by the customers.

“The creative team was excited to work with us. They thought they could have a lot of fun.

They’re not marketing widgets,” said Orange.

But keeping to its core values, Orange said the biggest thing the company is working on is a taster’s experience. That’s where the experimental and seasonal beers come in.

t began with a 16-day tour of Great Britain and concluded on B.C. high school rugby’s biggest stage playing for a provincial medal. What a remarkable journey the last three months have been for the McMath Wildcats senior boys rugby team.

The Wildcats concluded their breakthrough campaign with a 29-7 loss to the Collingwood Cavaliers Saturday in the Tier One “AA” bronze medal game at the B.C. Secondary Schools Rugby Union Championships in Abbotsford. A year earlier, the Steveston school was making its provincial debut at the tier II level. The growth over the past 12 months has been tremendous with only traditional private school programs getting in their way.

The fourth seeded Wildcats opened the championships with a 24-20 quarter-final win over No. 5 Robert Bateman. They battled hard in a 28-0 semi-final defeat to No. 1 ranked and eventual

champion St. Michael’s University, before closing out the tournament against Collingwood. It marked the third time the teams had met in a month, including the Lower Mainland “AA” final two weeks earlier.

“Literally for the past two months, we have not played a school out of the top five in the province,” said Wildcats head coach Mike Charlton.

“That’s what I congratulated the boys on postgame. That’s what happens when you reach a certain level of rugby. There’s not a team alive that would not want the opportunities we have had.

“They have played at a major stadium in England, the Brockton Oval, Centennial Oval, Swangard and now here at the provincials. They have had an incredible experience this year.”

This season was five years in the making.

Charlton brought these players up through the junior ranks where the Wildcats also enjoyed plenty of success. Thanks to a terrific parent group, the trip to the United Kingdom was organized. The quality of play and instruction helped springboard the McMath program to the next

level.

“It’s been an incredible bunch of guys to coach for the past five years and an incredible parent group too,” continued Charlton. “They have been an absolute pleasure to coach and I am going to miss these guys.

“We were the No. 1 public school in the province. It was only the three private schools that beat us.”

The Wildcats are losing a number of key Grade 12s to graduation including Jordan Roberts who was named to the Commissioner’s 15 Team, while Spencer Norman (lock) and Seth Wong Hen (wing) were recognized as two of the best in the province at their positions this season. Still, with the returning talent and juniors on the way up, they should be well-positioned to make a third straight trip to provincials.

“The great news is seven players are maintained for next year. Our tight five will still be here. The goal will be to qualify as a top seed for the Tier II championships and I think we can be competitive at that level,” added Charlton.

Another record for Rogers in high school finale

amryn Rogers closed out her high school career in style as part of a big weekend for Richmiond student athletes.

The Grade 12 McMath standout swept the senior girls hammer throw and shot events for the second straight year to earn the Top Female Athlete Award at the B.C. High School Championships, held at McLeod Stadium in Langley.

The Cal-Berkley bound thrower broke her own record in Friday’s hammer event with a

winning toss of 60.49 metres.

The next day her opening attempt of 13.65 metres was enough to hold off Sullivan Heights’ Dolly Gabri (13.49) to capture the shot put event and cement her status as one of the top performing athletes in the rich history of the championships.

Rogers highlighted a big three-days for McMath with several outstanding performances, especially at the junior boys level where the Steveston school nearly captured

overall team honours.

Rogers’ Kajaks teammate Carson Bradley captured the 200 and 400 metres event and also was a member of the silver medal winning 4x100 relay team.

McMath’s Selin Tasdemir captured the Grade 8 girls 800 metres, while Claire Bomsa earned bronze in the 400 event. The Wildcats Grade 8 girls 4x100 relay team captured silver.

Other notable achievements in senior girls

included Steveston-London rugby standout Valerie Wideski showcasing her athleticism to finish second in the discus event, while McNair sprinter Georgia Lam won silver in the 100 metres and was fourth in the 200.

In senior boys, Steveston-London’s Amisi Merveilles was third in the triple jump. Burnett’s Eric Che also won bronze in the long jump. Teammate Hiroki Sato was second and third respectively in the junior boys 200 and 100 metre events.

Islanders sizzle in Okanagan to win Kelowna tourney

ichmond 2003B Islanders girls fastpitch team has repeated as champions at the Kelowna U14B Spring Sizzle.

The Islanders headed to the Okanagan as one of the favourites, having won the tournament a year ago as a first-year team. They produced a trio of convincing wins over Clovedale ’04 Fury (15-4), South Surrey ’04 Thunder (8-2) and host Kelowna Heat (8-3) to place first in their division.

MISH, Stanley Albin April 20, 1925 – June 2, 2017 With much love and sadness we announce the passing of Stan at the age of 92 years. Stan was born in Penzance, and raised in the Summerberry and Qu’Appelle areas of Saskatchewan. At 18 years of age Stan volunteered with the Canadian Army serving as a Signalman during the WW II campaign that liberated Holland. Stan continued to serve with the Canadian Army through the end of WW II. Stan met and married the love of his life, Betty Morden in 1947 and moved to Richmond, B.C. where they raised their family. Stan and Betty moved to West Kelowna, B.C. in September of 2014.

In 1949 Stan began a 32-year career with Canada Post retiring at age 55. Stan enjoyed his work and the fellowship of his co-workers. Stan enjoyed a variety of sports, he was an avid golfer while enjoying curling and skiing.

Stan is predeceased by Betty, his wife of 68 years.

Stan is also predeceased by his sisters Irene Martin, Mildred Grant and, brothers Sam, Walt and Ed Mish. Stan is survived by his daughters, Donna (Bill) Shumborski of Kelowna, B.C. and Karel (Gordy) Miller of Richmond, B.C. and, his grandchildren, Rielly and Brett Miller of Richmond, B.C. Family was most important to Stan, he was very proud and always supportive of his daughters and grandchildren.

Stan will always be remembered for his good nature, his positive attitude and his good sense of humour.

Our family is deeply grateful to the staff of the Brookhaven Care Centre, West Kelowna, B.C. for their care and support of Stan since September of 2014.

Please treasure your memories of Stan and forget him not.

Peacefully, with his family at his side, Ken slipped away for his last long ride.

Survived by loving wife of 53 years, Margaret, son Ken (Dee), daughter Cheryl (Dennis), grandsons Michael and Maxwell, sisters Gwen (Moe) and Doreen (Richard), nephews Lee and Daniel, niece Lani, extended family member Leonard (Nifty), and faithful dog Nika.

Predeceased by parents Herbert and Alma, brothers Herbert Jr. and Clare.

Born in Vancouver, raised in Richmond, Ken settled his family in Ladner in 1971. He spent his lifetime working on the water as a well respected Towboat and Fishing boat Master.

A devoted family man, Ken loved motorcycling, fishing, hunting and was an avid gardener.

He wouldn’t suffer fools. If you were privileged with close friendship, it knew no bounds.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
