hen I saw I had received an automated phone message from McMath secondary on Tuesday morning, I assumed my daughter had been late for school — again.

But as I listened, it quickly became clear “late” was the least of our worries.

“McMath students are currently remaining in their first period classrooms in response to a concerning message that was posted recently. All students and staff are safe and the RCMP are on site following district protocol,” said the caller.

The day before, McMath parents were told of “unsettling statements” made on the school’s website. Those statements, in fact, were threats of a mass school shooting, but the police determined that, while outrageous, they were not a serious threat.

The next morning, however, there was yet another threat posted, and this time the “hold and secure” protocol (a kind of lockdown light) kicked in.

I have to admit, the 15-second message hadn’t even finished before I was asking one of our reporters to head down for a photo and another to post what we knew online.

Of course, as a parent, I was concerned, but not overly. Reading between the lines, it seemed the police didn’t think there was, or would be, an active shooter. In fact, it wasn’t a “lockdown,” rather a code yellow “hold and secure,” precisely because there didn’t appear to be an imminent threat.

What did get my heart pounding was when, a couple of minutes later, someone messaged the Richmond News Facebook page with the threat that had been posted on the school’s website that morning. We decided not to post or print it, but we did note the threat singled out the LGBTQ and Jewish communities.

It’s a tricky balance: we don’t want to fuel the fire and embolden those with racist, antiSemitic and homophobic attitudes, nor do we want to sweep things under the carpet and fail to acknowledge the very real fact these groups are frequently targets of hate crimes.

The police said the threats were “unspecific,” as they didn’t want to create undue anxiety for those groups or make others think they’re immune. Understandable, but now the crisis is over, where do we go from here?

When news came that the police had arrested a youth, my first reaction was, “Oh, that poor family.” Who knows why a kid would do something like this (if that’s the case), but this isn’t the time to abandon them.

McMath is a community. As a parent, it’s been my community for seven years now.

Now’s the time to show what we’re made of.

It’s time to go out of our way to show all families — LGBTQ, Jewish and those struggling with kids who cross the line — we’re in this together.

Down to earth talk about ‘real farming’

Dear Editor, Now that we have a tree-hugging, socialist provincial government in power, perhaps they or someone else can tell me how to make a decent living off one-third of an acre of land — growing a legal crop, that is.

My lot is one of the many half-acre lots dotted around Richmond. I have a 1960’s home, which leaves one-third of an acre to “farm.”

There are plenty of academic farmers and “experts” who will assure the public that we must save all these tiny agricultural lots for our “food security.”

I built and operated a small nursery on my one-third acre here in Richmond for seven years, and I can tell you that one-third of an acre of land in 2017 is not a farm.

Certainly, a small number of dedicated people make a living this way. They may have a few lettuce and veggies, but they do not contribute to food security, and they do not produce a reliable and substantial annual income.

If we are going to discuss the ALR and agriculture in this province, we need to clarify just what a farm is. A farm is not half an acre of land with a house on an urban main road surrounded by other houses, golf courses, driving ranges, religious schools, temples, wineries and whatever other exceptions are granted in the ALR.

Dear Editor, I was all set to attend the Pioneer Luncheon.

Then, Mayor Malcolm Brodie and friends voted for the farm castles, so I lost my appetite.

I might have lost my lunch had I gone and been unable to avoid looking at them.

A farm has to produce a yield substantial enough to make it a viable business. Recently, terms such as “food security” “agricultural land” and “farmers” have been misused and abused in any discussion along with “megahomes” and “foreign investors.”

There is plenty of misinformation out there.

Richmond has a large number of half-acre lots that qualified as farms more than 70 years ago after the Second World War. It seemed like a good idea at the time. In today’s economy, they do not qualify as farms.

Anyone who can make a sufficient annual income for a family from one-third of an acre is welcome to come and do it on my property.

You will put in a ton of physical labour and capital for precious little return. A real farm has to be large enough to support machinery, labour, weather uncertainty and many other variables.

One-third of an acre will not do this — I have tried it. Today, like it or not, these halfacre lots are large residential lots.

Of course, if you disagree, you can always grab a shovel and your boots, get over here, and farm it.

Before we all get self-righteous, warm and fuzzy about “agriculture,” let’s be clear what exactly we are talking about.

Taxes out of control Dear Editor, We have just received our 2017 Richmond property tax notice and the $5,260.77 amount payable (after the senior’s grant) is an increase of 39 per cent more than last year’s $3,784.77 amount.

We have lived in the same Richmond home for 31 years and have been senior citizens on fixed income for the past four years.

This increase is unconscionable and simply just not fair.

Also, the deferring of the property taxes, is just increasing our personal debt

and simply underwriting deferred revenue to the government that they will account as a guaranteed future asset by a lien on our property.

This type of government debt management and spending is out of control and not sustainable.

Adjustments have to made otherwise there could be a tax revolt.

A 39 per cent increase is just not reasonable, and we are not the only ones affected by this city tax grab.

What about China’s Seniors?

A fascinating story published by Bloomberg News earlier this week shares some interesting facts about China’s growing Seniors population. China now has 222 million people over the age of 60, and its Seniors population is one of the main reasons for the shift in China’s economy away from exports and toward consumption.

Seniors are already driving China’s travel and housing industries, and transforming its health-care industry. It is estimated that, in the coming 25 years, fully one-third of its gross domestic product will consist of goods and services focused on Seniors.

Companies are now developing various products geared toward Seniors, including “smart care” products, some of which will track Seniors’ health. One example mentioned is “Nestle Yiyang Fuel for brain senior milk powder,” which apparently helps Seniors “refuel their brains and start a new smart life.”

In the coming years, China’s Seniors population will doubtless give rise to additional new products and services, and will have a global influence. I expect that lawyers in China are doing more and more Wills and Estate planning as well! Watch out for more stories in the coming years.

rental business. According to the Vancouver Sun on May 19, 2017, they have been using overnight accommodation websites to illegally rent out furnished apartments, without the required hotel licence, since at least 2013 in their building at 1022 Seymour St. in Downtown Vancouver.

The City of Vancouver fined them $24,000 just for the last, six-month period since that is the time limit for such fines under the law.

Onni agreed to stop the short-term rentals in that building. Now, they would like to move the operation to Steveston.

Dear Editor, Onni has again submitted a re-zoning application for the vacant ground level space in its six Imperial Landing buildings on the Steveston waterfront.

The application includes its previous request for commercial retail and restaurant uses in the four, western buildings. However, it has changed the requested uses in the two, eastern buildings to allow short-term rental accommodation, much like a motel with room doors opening to the outside.

The current zoning restricts rental housing to the upper levels of the buildings to ensure that activities of benefit to the local community are provided on the ground level. Allowing short-term rentals, the most lucrative type of housing, on the ground level is of no benefit to the local community which already has too many such accommodations.

Onni keeps coming up with new schemes to get something for nothing. What doesn’t change is its refusal to pay adequate compensation to the city for the requested re-zoning.

When Onni bought the property, it paid industrial land prices since it was zoned for industrial activities. Had that land been zoned for prime, commercial activities, it would have paid millions more. Onni keeps making totally inadequate compensation offers to the city for the millions of dollars increase in land value that the re-zoning would overnight drop in its lap. The longer Onni waits to make a fair compensation offer, the more the land value increases and the more rental revenue it loses.

M

arcus Ribi had a chuckle when he heard it was Bike to Work Week in B.C. this week.

Since the sun started to shine this spring, the 22-year-old has been cycling to work in Vancouver from his townhouse on Francis Road at the dyke.

Ribi, who lives with his mom in the complex, is a sheet metal apprentice and wanted to save some money on gas and make less of a footprint on the environment by hopping on his bike a few times a week.

Trouble is, he came home last Friday to discover a courtesy warning ticket from the City of Richmond on the windshield of his Kia, which he has to park on Francis due to his three-bedroom townhouse having only one parking spot, used by his mom.

According to the ticket, which quotes Bylaw 5870, you can’t park in front of a residence for more than three hours, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. unless you’re a resident or owner of the premises you’re parking in front of.

“I started cycling to work last summer, at least two or three times, and I parked on the same street, on Francis, just before the dyke,” Ribi told the Richmond News.

“Some of the townhouses in here have two spots, some, like ours, just have one. The detached houses in the area that I’ve parked in front of, have at least double garages, with some parallel parking.

“The people who live in the big houses shouldn’t have the right to park in the street if I can’t. They don’t own the street parking.

“I guess it’s ironic, given that it’s Bike to Work Week and I’m trying to do my best for the environment and cut costs. They should be encouraging people to cycle to work, not giving them tickets.”

In an email to the Richmond News, city spokesperson Ted Townsend said the city is simply responding to complaints received from residents about several vehicles in the area parking in front of people’s houses for up to a week without moving.

Townsend said a bylaw officer attended the 3100 block of Francis Road on three days last week, leaving a number of warning tickets on different vehicles and issuing one parking fine for someone exceeding the 72-hour bylaw.

The fine is $50, but is reduced to $35 for early payment within 28 days.

Parking time limits, added Townsend, are “designed to encourage turnover of parking spots to ensure there is sufficient capacity to address day-to-day needs as they fluctuate throughout the day and to discourage people See Streets page 7

Asked what other solutions he has to consider, Ribi doesn’t think there are any, short of getting rid of his car, which he said isn’t an option living in west Richmond.

“I use my car in the evenings and on weekends. Living in Richmond, it’s very inconvenient if you don’t have a car, especially out here on the dyke,” he added.

“Maybe there should be a decal for people living in the same block or something?

“I leave about 6:30 a.m. for work, so my mom had to jockey my car into our sole parking spot today (Tuesday) and then she goes to work in her car and takes mine back out onto the street later. It’s not really a solution, is it?”

Bike to Work Week (BTWW) began in Greater Victoria in 1995 with a core group of commuter cyclists, about 500, committed to raising the profile of commuter cycling.

In 2016, more than 52 regions/communities across B.C. participated with 36,9987 cyclists saving an approximate $86,048 in gas that week.

Canada 150 blooming in the city Seniors Week

R

ichmond City Hall’s plaza will bloom with colour in June and early July with a unique celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation.

“Our Home and Native Bloom,” as it’s being called, will feature more than 4,500 native flowering plants in an “inspiring, pop-up floral design composed of plant species native to Richmond and British Columbia,” according to the city.

“This will be a spectacular celebration of Canada’s unique, natural abundance,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“As the Child of the Fraser, our island community is renowned for its rich and fertile environment, so what better way to show what makes Richmond and Canada distinct.”

The floral design will depict a “Fluvial Fan” with floral “islands” that symbolically represent Richmond’s 17 islands and the landforms that have been shaped over time by the Fraser River.

The design was commissioned from landscape architecture students at the University of British Columbia, including Nicole Alden, Patrick Beech, Genevieve Depelteau, John

The large floral display will compliment a program of free, lunchtime musical performances, educational talks and family-oriented art activities from June 7 to July 6 at the plaza.

Engaging, fun and inspiring activities that mark the national celebrations will be offered city-wide throughout the week.

“Richmond seniors are vital contributors to the rich cultural and social fabric of our community” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“The wide variety of activities and events offered through Seniors Week are essential to promoting healthy and active aging while fostering a caring, connected and engaged community.”

Seniors province-wide are once again being publicly acknowledged for their vibrancy and the pivotal role they play in society during BC Seniors Week June 5 to 11.

To celebrate locally, the city and its partners are offering more than 20 free or low-cost events, activities and programs over the seven days.

The week-long celebrations kick off on Monday, June 5 at 10 a.m. at Gateway Theatre with the opening ceremony featuring performances from notable Canadians and local performers; including musician/storyteller Rick Scott and comedian Mavis Pickett.

Other activities to enjoy throughout the week include a Japanese Tea Ceremony, Portraits of City Centre, Map Quest Travels, Seniors Lunch with a Canadian themed sing-a-long, Oh Canada! A Musical Celebration, Memory Lane and the Over 90s Tea and Celebration.

Wrap up the week on Sunday, June 11 with buckwheat pancakes at the “Canadian Breakfast, Eh” or learn about an important piece of Canadian history at The Journey of a Black Loyalist Family to Rural Nova Scotia.

Police: McMath is safe City getting its first community health hub R Alan Campbell

ichmond will finally get its first-ever community health centre, after a deal was struck to rent space in a renovated City Centre building.

As Richmond is one of the few Lower Mainland communities without a CHC (community health centre), the move sent a ripple of excitement through the local healthcare community, which is acutely aware of the need for such a facility.

The centre will be based in 27,000-square-feet of space in a refurbished, three-storey building on the corner of Alderbridge Way and Lansdowne Road and is expected to open sometime late in 2018, after Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) signed a lease agreement last week.

When fitted out, it will complement the new home of the Richmond Adult and Older Adult Mental Health Teams and the Anne Vogel Clinic, both of which are set to open on June 6. (The Anne Vogel Clinic provides assessment/treatment and primary care for people dealing with opiate dependence.)

However, given the restricted space, it’s unlikely Richmond’s CHC will be in a position to deliver as wide a range of healthcare services that other such facilities offer across the region.

And although it’s early days in terms of determining exactly what services will be provided in the centre, Richmond’s chief medical health officer, Dr. Meena Dawar, anticipates the focus to be on the city’s increasing seniors population.

“We’re only at step one, but it is very exciting. We know in Richmond that the seniors population is growing very fast, so we would likely want to look at strengthening services for that group,” Dawar told the Richmond News.

“In general, however, community health centres tend to provide a solution for the community it is in. Some of the centres in Vancouver, for example, have very different nuances.

“I foresee this centre in Richmond having a focus on seniors and people with chronic health conditions.

“We would have to first figure out what kind of services make sense in

there. And we need to hire a project lead.”

VCH Richmond said it received dedicated project funding and approval of $16 million — plus operating costs — for the new CHC, although the extra costs, say VCH, are largely transferable via the shifting of services from one location to another.

Other community health centres in the region host primary care and are often a one-stop shop for health providers, including social workers, physios, OTs (occupational therapists), home and community care workers.

The building in Richmond, however, doesn’t have the capacity to provide all of that.

“The need for this CHC is well documented and is especially important as we continue to shift services from acute to community,” said Jennifer MacKenzie, chief operating officer, VCH Richmond.

“As the fourth-largest community in B.C. with one of the fastest-growing senior’s populations, our new CHC will sit as the cornerstone of this healthy, thriving community.”

The new CHC, added MacKenzie, will increase VCH Richmond’s ability to bring complimentary programs and services together under one roof.

Although many services will remain at VCH Richmond’s headquarters at 8100 Granville Avenue, the new CHC will provide a second service hub; allowing Richmond to develop community-based services, with the hope of taking some pressure off the likes of hospitals, doctors’ offices and medical clinics.

According to VCH, the services at the new CHC will also focus on the care required by vulnerable populations.

“Launching Richmond’s first CHC is an incredible opportunity for us to work together, to re-imagine how acute and community work together, and to apply innovative solutions wherever and whenever we can for the benefit of our patients and clients,” MacKenzie added.

VCH Richmond is currently recruiting for a CHC project lead and project

team. Next steps in the planning process include envisioning what community programs and services will be located in the new CHC; development of the Clinical Services Plan and development of a functional program.

ichmond RCMP has declared McMath secondary ‘safe,’ with a second youth taking responsibility for Tuesday’s drama.

The Richmond News understands that around 250 students failed to show for school Wednesday after being placed, the day before, in a five-hour, “hold and secure” protocol, with students and teachers barred from leaving their classrooms.

A threat of a mass shooting was posted online Monday, followed by a more specific threat on Tuesday, directed towards the school’s LGBTQ and Jewish communities.

The drama ended peacefully at 2:30 p.m.

Tuesday, with a male youth arrested.

However, a second youth, who police say has taken responsibility, is now being

questioned.

And after being made aware of a flood of students failing to show for school and monitoring misinformation on social media, police are saying it’s safe to return to McMath.

“We realize...that much misinformation has been circulating,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang. “...information posted on social media is not always reflective of all the facts and can be very misleading...The police have a number of resources that are not available to the public to assist us in our investigation.

“We have identified an additional (second) youth who has taken responsibility for his role in this matter. Our investigators are confident that the school is safe.”

hotographs can tell a story.

And when a skilled photographer is behind the lens, those stories can vividly come to life and transcend the technical challenge of clicking a shutter button when light conditions are optimum.

That’s what Richmond’s Don MacGregor has been doing professionally for nearly 50 years, and recently he was awarded the Yousuf Karsh Lifetime Achievement Award that recognizes photographic excellence in the ranks of the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC).

“The story-telling part of taking a photo is really critical,” said MacGregor, who began working at 16, shooting for a Vancouver studio.

“It’s what I enjoy the most.

But it’s one of the hardest aspects for the public to understand.”

MacGregor said that with the vast amount of technology surrounding the process of taking photos today — in terms of the latest and greatest equipment — the aspect of capturing and presenting an image that has a depth to its meaning is often overlooked.

“How good you are at Photoshop or how many megapixels your camera can shoot does not automatically make for good photographs,” said MacGregor, who has called Richmond home for 35 years. “It’s not about the equipment and the notion

that if you have great gear you must be a professional.

“That’s one thing the industry is really struggling with — trying to educate the public that technology is not the be all and end all.”

As an example, MacGregor said that legendary writer Ernest Hemingway wrote his stories using what would be, today, considered humble equipment — a manual typewriter or even written by hand.

“Ernest Hemingway was an amazing writer — his books will live on forever.

And yet, he probably used an old, Remmington typewriter or maybe even just a notepad and plunked away writing his books,” MacGregor said. “Today, we use technology that is light years ahead of that, yet we don’t consider ourselves authors of those kinds of great books.

“It takes a lot more than good technology to take a good photograph or write a good novel.”

It also takes experience to hone your craft, something MacGregor began compiling while attending Magee secondary in Vancouver where he was introduced to the photography through a school-based camera club.

“A friend of mine — he was the nerd of the entire school — got me involved in the camera club. And I began shooting weddings for a studio in Vancouver when I was still in high school and See Pixel page 11

From page 10 didn’t even have my driver’s licence,” he said. “My grandmother, a little, old, whitehaired lady, used to drive me to the weddings. And I used to tell her, ‘Grandma, park around the corner. Don’t let anybody see.

“But it all worked out well.

And that was 47 years ago.

So, I have been behind a camera for a very long time,” MacGregor said, adding he feels humbled to receive the Karsh award, which is named after the legendary Canadian portrait photographer.

MacGregor said at the root of his work is his ability to fully convey a story through his images, something he said has been a constant in his work and is becoming more the norm as technical ability, he feels, is not always at the forefront for a growing number of photographers.

“Approximately 15 years ago, the Professional Photographers of America, the largest association in the world, had a membership of about 10,000 people, 90 per cent of which was male,” MacGregor said. “Today, they have 30,000 members and

70 per cent are women.”

That huge swing has made a significant impact in the types of photographs being taken, he said.

“Basically, it’s soccer moms, bored housewives — people who think photography is fun. And they are doing something that is very good. They are bringing a lot of emotion into photographs.

“The not so good part is they have no interest or skills in the technical side of good photography. They just want to take pretty pictures. But when it comes to the storytelling part that is huge.”

MacGregor said he discusses at length with his clients what emotional symbols can be incorporated into his photographs. Sometimes, it’s the family’s dream home. On one occasion it was a backyard fire pit where one family regularly gathered around and spent time together.

“That was such an important place for them, where they all did a lot of growing up. And now the children in the family were growing up and ready to go their separate ways and this was an important moment in time for them to capture,” MacGregor said.

haran Gill, 70, a retired teacher, came to Richmond as a one-year-old in 1948, when her dad took to raising and racing horses at Lansdowne Racetrack.

“The racetrack was in our backyard,” said Gill, who grew up on a five-acre lot on Lansdowne Road, but later moved to Steveston with her husband in 1981.

She attended four elementary schools, including the old Bridgeport school. She went to Cambie junior secondary and then Richmond

She sees many similarities between now and then, but also big changes.

As a child, the neighbourhood referred to itself as the “League of Nations.”

“There were so many families from so many parts of the world — Japanese, Dutch, German, Scottish, Irish. We were just kids growing up.

We didn’t have hyphenated names. We weren’t Indo-Canadian, Japanese-Canadian.

We were just Canadians,” said Gill of an era prior to a

multiculturalism policy.

“People were friendly, it was a smaller community.

People knew each other.

There wasn’t much to do.

“I miss the simplicity and small town feel. But I recognize that’s progress. I just wish (the city) had a bit more control. I don’t like the farmland disappearing. I don’t like the huge houses . . . I don’t want the world to change that much,” she said.

At the luncheon, she praised city organizers and met many old friends.

Forever welcomed on Lulu K

imiyo and Toshio Murao were born in Steveston in 1926 and 1920, respectively.

They married in Japan, in 1947, but moved back to the village six years later, to raise six children.

While they don’t speak much English, daughter Kay Higo explained that they still very much enjoy being a part of the community.

“They go with the flow. My dad is pretty easy going.”

Toshio was active with the kendo club and Japanese language schools.

Toshio, who was a fisherman for nearly 50 years, still loves to play gateball behind the Buddhist church on Garry Street.

He still loves hanging out with young people, said Higo.

“I think he thinks he’s young,” she laughed.

“Mom is a bit more serious.”

Kimiyo raised the kids at home while Toshio fished.

She was also an active member in the community, volunteering at community centres and the church. With

a pioneer work ethic, Kimiyo also worked in community gardens and canneries.

The Muraos’ contributions to Richmond nearly never came to fruition. After being interned during the Second World War, Toshio was so upset, he threw his Canadian citizenship papers on the ground before leaving for Japan (feeling unwelcomed to stay). Higo said a police officer picked them up and handed them back to him.

“He told my dad, ‘you may need this one day.’”

He built 400 homes!

itts Sakai, 83, reckons he built 400 homes in Richmond during his career as a homebuilder.

“We built a lot of custom design homes, ones that lawyers and business people came to buy,” explained Sakai of the 1960s housing boom when farms were paved over.

In 1956 he founded his firm Fraserview Construction.

“At that time houses were coming up like mushrooms,” said Sakai.

Decades ago house construction cost $10 per square foot. Now it’s north of several hundred dollars. And some of his homes are being demolished now.

That’s OK, said Sakai.

“It’s hard to stop progress,” he said.

Sakai said Richmond has always been a friendly and peaceful place to live: “In 1949 my mother and father never locked their house.”

“But fishing was seasonal.

So, I learned carpentry,” said Sakai, a father-of-four.

A visit to 'The Old Country' SHELLEYCIVKIN Retirement for Beginners

W

here, you might ask, is The Old Country?

Winnipeg, of course! Most of my family is from there, and since I have the excuse of attending a wedding in Winnipeg, I’m going to seize the opportunity to do a bit of sleuthing into my family history.

While my grandparents were originally from the Czarist Russia, they all immigrated to Winnipeg at the turn of the 1900s. The north end of Winnipeg was filled with folks from Eastern Europe, struggling to assimilate into Canadian culture.

My dad’s parents arrived with barely two nickels to rub together. While they were both highly educated (an unusual thing, especially for Eastern European women of that time), my grandfather was forced to open a barber shop to support his family.

Not that this stopped him from talking philosophy and politics with his customers while giving haircuts….and those haircuts could go on for a long time.

His was The Old Reliable Barber Shop, proprietor Solomon Civkin. No one called him by his first name, though. Not even his wife. He was simply Civkin to everyone.

My grandmother, Celia, eschewed housework and cooking, in favour of helping her children with their homework. According to my father, it was his mother who really deserved the medical degree, since she would stay up till all hours of the night studying

with him for his medical exams.

Tragedy stuck their family when the oldest son, Alex, died at age 12 from pneumonia.

My grandmother, distraught, felt that since she was meant to have four children and she’d lost one, she should have another. So, that’s what she did, much later in life. Enter Naomi, the baby, who, at around age 17, got a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music in New York. She became a famous concert pianist.

According to stories about my dad’s family, his parents sacrificed everything to ensure that their children had every opportunity life could offer.

In preparation for this trip, I did some research and found the gravesites of my grandparents on both sides, as well as some of their children who died young. It sounds macabre spending time visiting cemeteries, but I’m feeling an emotional pull.

Since I didn’t know many of them during their lifetimes, at least I can “visit” them now. It might help me piece together the stories I’ve been hearing about them since childhood.

All this is by way of saying that I was too self-absorbed and immature to realize the importance of family history until recently.

And now it’s too late to get that information firsthand. If you’re so inclined, do yourself a favour and get to know your elders before they pass on.

Trust me, those relationships are priceless.

Teachers making SPACE to LEARN

Richmond School District teacher consultant Marie Thom and Grauer elementary principal Andrew Ferguson display a new way of organizing classrooms, to suit the newly-implemented curriculum. Long gone are the days of rows of desks.

If you took a time machine back to 1948 and stepped inside Grauer elementary school, what would you find? Your answer may be a lot of chalk and school desks and chairs.

Now, consider how those desks and chairs may have been arranged. It’s likely you’ll picture orderly rows upon rows of desks, however well-designed for an illicit network of note passing.

Then consider where you would picture the teacher. Either behind their desk or in front of the chalkboard, spouting orders and direction.

Fast-forward nearly seven decades and enter the “pop-up” classroom of teacher consultants Janice Novakowski and Marie Thom.

In this classroom, sometimes referred to as a studio, the chairs are stacked in the corner, almost a distant memory.

And there are no individual desks. And learning tools, toys and books are spread out in “stations.”

It’s a new classroom model designed to foster the school district’s new teaching curriculum, which is in full-gear this year.

“There’s lots of room for creativity, for problem-solving, for thinking outside the box. So we’re really looking at our redesigned curriculum and asking, how can we show teachers what our new curriculum can look like in a new classroom setting?” explained Thom.

This specific classroom has been set up with a focus on mathematics where students can roam. The open-ended design has materials that can be shared by all grades. The consultants host sessions for teachers; run demo lessons with students, for teachers to observe; bring parent groups in to learn about the new ideas being explored; and host other consultants from other districts.

The “pop-up” classroom is at Grauer because principal Andrew Ferguson had the extra space. Otherwise, Thom and Novakowski would have had to continue their “travelling roadshow,” packing up materials from school to school, explained Ferguson.

“We now have the opportunity to have our students come in and test drive a few of their activities,” said Ferguson.

“What I’m seeing as a principal is a trickle out effect where the classrooms across the hall or up the stairs are now starting to be somewhat similar to what’s happening here.

Teachers are clearing out some space, bringing down the volume of visual distractions, they’re wanting storage with easy access.”

“Children learn in multiple ways and we’re providing multiple opportunities and entry points for them,” said Thom, who stresses a “full body experience.”

The key is to allow students to explore subjects in a way that’s conducive to their learning appetite. Furthermore,

Nor is it something Homma elementary teacher Claire Haddock would normally think to do herself.

Students were particularly excited to use a saw.

Most students built chairs, while others built the likes of tables or shelves.

“I liked the saw part because the cutting was really fun. I have never used a saw before the maker project,” said Emily.

This was the first time an elementary class used tools supplied by district staff, via McMath secondary’s woodwork shop, to work on a project.

“I felt strong using a saw. I liked the power tools, too. I was very careful with them. I never used any tools before,” said Sam.

Haddock developed the lesson during a professional development day dubbed Maker Day. “I wanted the kids to do something that’s really hands on, and do something they may not have had the opportunity to do in school before. I thought if they used tools, it might spark an interest later on, say if

Amber Fort: Formidable and ostentatious Allan Lynch

T

he Rajasthan region of India was ruled for more than 1,000 years by the Rajputs, warrior kings who carved out dozens of small fiefdoms and defended them with fortified palaces. One of the most impressive to visit, inside and out, is the Amber Fort, 12 kilometres north of Jaipur.

The heavily fortified palace is strung along a rocky ridge that has one lowland approach. Running out from it, up the hillsides and across hilltops are walls, like small versions of China’s Great Wall. The Amber Fort seems pretty much impenetrable. If someone did lay siege, the Maota Lake at its base would provide a constant water supply.

There has been some form of fort here since the 10th century. The current complex was begun in the 16th century by Rajput Man Singh I. Built around four main courtyards, it is as luxurious once you’re inside as it is forbidding from without. The first courtyard, and largest, is the Jaleb Chowk. This vast space was where merchants set up stalls and military ceremonies were held. Now, it houses the ticket offices, gift shop and museum. Decorated elephants offer rides to the lake below.

The second courtyard contains the Diwan-i-Am, the Hall of Public Audience, a colonnaded pavilion where the rajput would meet his subjects. At the back of

this courtyard is the Ganesh Pole, a gate to the family quarters. Above the Ganesh Pole is a sheltered perch where the royal women, who lived in a type of gilded cage, could watch the events in the first two courtyards.

The third courtyard is smaller and more elaborate. This is where the rajput met with senior officials, nobles and friends in the highly decorated Hall of Private Audience, the Dawn-i-Khaas.

The fourth and final courtyard is the most intimate. Its Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) was the private quarters of the ruler and his queen. Mirrored mosaics and coloured glass embedded in the walls and vaulted ceiling reflect day and candlelight. Opposite is the Sukh Mahal (Pleasure Palace), cooled by water coursing through small channels carved into the marble walls, countering the oppressive heat.

The rajputs spared no expense in building, decoration and ornamentation. After covering themselves in layers of silk, pearls and gems, they favoured silver for a décor theme. In the Amber Fort, an excellent example is off the first courtyard, the Jaleb Chowk: a long set of steps leads to a walled terrace on the outer wall. At one end is the 1135 AD restaurant. Above it is a large dining room now used for VIP events. The walls are covered in panels of silver. The furniture is solid silver: a 10-seat dining room suite, sofa, armchairs, footstools, coffee and side tables, floor-sized hookah, picture frames, sculpture and other orna-

ments. To amplify the glittering impact, rooms are lit by large, crystal chandeliers.

When more than 700 princely states existed in what is now India, ostentation was a way to be noticed. Centuries later at the Amber Fort, the results are still mightily impressive.

■ McRoberts Strikers dropped a hard-fought 24-17 decision to Elgin Park in the Tier 2 Division final at the B.C. Girls Rugby Championships in Abbotsford.

Silver lining finish for Strikers T

he McRoberts Strikers senior girls rugby team capped off an outstanding season with a silver medal finish in the Tier 2 Division at last weekend’s B.C. Championships in Abbotsford.

The Strikers qualified for the 15-a-side tournament by placing second in the Lower Mainland Zone with a 5-1 record, which earned them the No. 3 ranking.

They rolled to a dominating 61-15 opening victory over Smithers, building up a 32-0 halftime lead. Notable performances from centre Leah Barber, lock Isabella McKillop and wing Britney Fagan pushed the girls onto a semi-final matchup with Lower Mainland zone opponents Burnaby North.

That game saw a few key starters sidelined early with injuries — testing the Strikers’ depth on their 29-player roster.

McRoberts easily won the set-piece and possession battles in the first half but could not convert the opportunities into points.

Fullback Paris Chong had several long scampers from misplaced kicks, which allowed McRoberts to gradually wear down the Burnaby defence. Forwards Kira Langer, Anjali Chhibbar and Alex Angeles made several big tackles and were present at nearly every breakdown, getting their hands on the ball and causing all sorts of trouble for the Burnaby halfbacks.

With McRoberts down 15-10 late in the second half, a thunderous tackle from Keelin Laing allowed McRoberts to turn the ball over, and pass it through several sets of hands before centre Moe Yang was able to weave her way through the Burnaby defence and score the tying points.

With momentum now on their side, pressure on both sides of the ball from assistant captain Danielle Robertson and rookie prop Kyra Bates resulted in Burnaby North taking several penalties.

With defenders draped all over her, graduating prop and recent selection to the Canada Under 18 team selection Valerie Wideski scored her third try of the game and sixth try of the tournament to put McRoberts ahead at the final whistle.

The Strikers were headed to their first provincial final in nearly a decade.

They took on the Elgin Park Orcas — a South Surrey school that handed them a 20-0 defeat at last month’s Provincials Sevens Tournament.

The girls gave up an early try and it seemed like another disappointing loss to their Fraser Valley zone opponents was at hand.

But captain Kaitlyn Agda rallied the side with her tremendous running and tackling performance, and the girls came storming back with an outstanding try from Wideski in the corner – knotting the game at 5-5. Elgin managed to score in the dying moments of the opening half to lead 12-5 at the break.

After a spirited halftime discussion, the inspiring play of Angel Lozare and Nini Weng – both recently returned from injuries — gave the Strikers a bit of life, allowing them to draw even after another Wideski try and conversion.

Strong efforts by the McRoberts’ forward pack, which included Jordan Rooyakkers, Sydney Martin-Towers and Hannah Koshno, allowed hook Rainalyne Soloria to steal every single Elgin Park scrum in the second half. Despite the set-piece advantage, the game was a back and forth affair

– a bounce here or there might surely decide the outcome.

As fate would have it, fleet-footed Jessica Wang scooped up a bouncing ball and ran 60 metres for the go-ahead try – giving the Strikers the lead for the first time in the game.

But another come-from-behind win was not in the cards, as the experienced and well-drilled Elgin Park side summoned the strength to score twice in the final 20 minutes, including on the penultimate play of the game to put themselves ahead 24-17. The subsequent kick-off was fielded by Elgin and kicked into touch. The Strikers had come-up just short, losing by only a converted try.

Despite the gut-wrenching loss, coaches Graham Haigh, Jaya Gill and Thalia Puac were proud of the season long effort by the girls, which combined with their seventh-place finish at Provincial Sevens, was one of the more successful seasons in the program’s 14-year history.

McRoberts had not attended the provincial tournament since 2013, but will be in good position for a return run in 2018, losing only four players to graduation.

Junior players Emilee Stewart, Liz Tkachenko, Sally Yang, Holly Burr, Sophie Madeira, Jena Smith, Rachellyne Soloria and Sabrina Shaw attended their first provincial tournament and played well.

Tenacious scrumhalf Elsie Gonzalez was named to the tournament all-star team and several of the McRoberts girls will be playing in the upcoming Provincial Regional Championship tournament in July.
