At 91 years of age, she is not only an adept administrator for the group, but a talented performer who generously shares her love of music and singing with others. few weeks back, the B.C. early childhood educators (BCECE) association held its annual conference in Richmond.

Because I’m not great about checking my calendar before saying “yes,” I agreed to moderate one of the panel discussions before realizing it was right in the middle of the election. I probably would have declined had I known, but thankfully I didn’t — here’s to disorganization.

The panel topic was “Pathways to Professionalism: Believe, Be Hopeful, Be Bold.”

The first and very valid question is what the heck do I know about professionalizing the early childhood education sector? The answer — precious little.

However, as a working mom, who’s tried every daycare, preschool and after-school arrangement imaginable, I do have some opinions on the subject. I also have a stake in the matter — as we all do.

How we raise our kids and what childcare options we provide parents is fundamental to the kind of society we are or aim to be.

So, what exactly does it mean to “professionalize” the early childhood education sector?

While a lot was discussed, the key theme that ran throughout was that of standardization — or a lack thereof — in both education and compensation.

Currently, some early childcare workers have bachelor degrees or even master’s in the field, while others don’t have a high school diploma.

One panelist talked about the challenge of implementing the latest concepts regarding brain development, while working alongside someone with no awareness and even less interest in understanding those concepts.

Daycare was an issue in the election. All parties talked about creating more spaces for kids and more options for parents. But there was a fundamental divide on how to make that happen; the NDP and Greens support a public system, the Liberals a private one.

It seems to me we’ve been going the private route, for some time now and the results have been massive wait lists, huge financial burdens on those who can least afford it and frighteningly unprofessional care.

The election may be over, but the campaign to establish a $10/day daycare plan is just getting going. It would provide a clear and consistent framework for childcare in B.C. Few of us would question the importance of a public education system for students KGrade 12. I’m not sure why we’re having such a hard time wrapping our minds around such a system from birth to age 12.

We can only give kids a fair chance in life if we also give them equal access to quality care; education and fair compensation for those providers are essential to that.

As one panelist said, “it’s not just about kissing boo boos and giving hugs.”

Once a sea lion or seal is spotted, it draws a lot of attention from the public, many of whom are seeing such animals for the first time in the wild. The chance to get up close and friendly by offering a food token is very tempting.

In the case of a sea lion, its head is like the tip of an iceberg. As was clearly demonstrated in the recent incident, the sea lion can move very quickly in spite of its size.

Signage as a warning and control is not enough as it is easily ignored and many foreign visitors may not understand the language used. The authorities responsible should have officers on duty who can enforce the rules and regulations, particularly when it comes to the behaviour of the fishermen using the docks.

Dear Editor, The recent incident at the Steveston fish docks was set off by a number of factors which have been largely ignored by the authorities responsible for enforcing the rules and regulations that apply to activities on the docks.

The presence of wildlife in the air (sea gulls in particular) and in the water (sea lions, seals, etc) are directly linked to the fishermen who use the docks as their marketplace. Fishermen routinely dump fish waste into the water next to their boats when they are cleaning their display trays.

It is not uncommon to see dead fish floating alongside fishing boats. All of this attracts the sea lions and seals that follow the fishing boats to the docks to share in a feeding frenzy.

The fish docks can be very busy places and visitors are very curious with all that is

Who do MLAs Farmhouse size Reverse farm call really serve? compromise?

Try capitulation Dear Editor, I understand elected City of Richmond officials, representing city residents, oppose the Massey Tunnel Replacement Project.

I understand Metro Vancouver elected officials oppose it, with the exception of Delta representatives.

Meanwhile, the three re-elected Liberal MLAs, representing Richmond, support the bridge project, despite community concerns and wishes.

The position of the newly elected MLA is unknown.

Do the Richmond MLAs have a fiduciary duty of care to represent their constituents’ wishes or the wishes of the port authority?

Do proponents of the bridge rely on fake news (cost, future ship’s draft, coal shipments, etc.)?

Unlike the Port Mann and Alex Fraser bridges, it will not be necessary to shut down a tunnel for ice/snow bombs.

The current status does not demonstrate cause for trusting elected provincial representatives.

Dear Editor, Re: “Farmhouse saga ends with ‘compromise,’” News, May 19.

Alan Campbell’s report on efforts to limit the size of homes in the Agricultural Land Reserve indicates the final vote was described by the mayor as a compromise?

Maybe city council doesn’t understand the difference between the meaning of compromise and capitulation.

This whole exercise was an insult to the city staff, who put forward a well-reasoned solution and the wishes of the majority (70-plus per cent) of residents who took time to express their views.

Why bother?

Owners wishing to build mansions in the agricultural zones are not farmers and the people living in these homes are not doing any farmwork!

The closest they would come to having family “work” the farm is putting them in charge of a “pick your own” stand.

One of these times, city council needs to show some real statesmanship and vote for what is best for Richmond, rather than play politics.

Dear Editor, The ongoing “mega home on farmland” debate has often obscured the main objective of the bylaws proposed in the initial city staff report on the problem — to preserve as much farmland as possible for the farmers of tomorrow, so that it isn’t built upon or contaminated, thereby taking it out of production forever.

The staff report showed how this objective could best be met by limiting farmland house size to 5,382-square-feet and ensuring that the setback from the road does not unduly encroach on farmland.

Instead, council voted to approximately double house size limits and increase the setbacks.

When speaking to council, the farmers of today are wearing two very different hats. They are both farmers and landowners.

Several of them were honest enough to say that their prime concern is keeping farmland prices high to provide for their retirement when they eventually sell or to provide a large inheritance for their children or to serve as collateral in obtaining large loans from a bank.

An understandable sentiment shared with many other landowners, but it has nothing to do with farming.

While the councillors spoke of “supporting our farmers” and minimizing any impediments to their farming, these dramatic increases in house sizes have nothing to do with facilitating farming and will only result in more prime farmland being taken out of production forever.

We need to reverse city council’s decision to ignore the staff report and increase farmland house sizes and setbacks.

ichmond’s new farmland bylaws put a limit on the largest mega-mansions, but they still batter our endangered ALR farmland.

That’s because council, obeying the farmland-owner lobby, set a farmland house-size limit that’s two to four times what it should be under the Ministry of Agriculture guidelines.

Their so-called “compromise” obliterates the ministry’s aims, such as minimizing any loss of ALR farmland to non-farmer residential use. If the Serengeti National Park compromised its 2,700 endangered elephants council-style, they’d end up shot.

If you’re pro-elephant or pro-farmland, it’s a less than pretty picture. As Richmond’s ALR legacy gets tossed aside, what can we still do?

Celebrate! Celebrate that councillors Harold Steves and Carol Day did everything in their power to educate their colleagues. Celebrate that Harold, 80 years young, worked all night to prepare his final case for ALR values and shared it with vigor at the public hearing.

Celebrate the 700 citizens who took part in early consultation. Celebrate that 300 citizens then got involved to put council in a position to not torpedo the ALR. Celebrate how citizens mastered the issue to simplify all aspects for council members who have difficulty with reading or finding time for it.

For example, John Roston used graphics to

unmask the fallacy that people with the occupation of farmer should always be treated like farmers. Roston would say that a farmer who is also a surgeon should be treated like a surgeon when removing appendixes and like a farmer when milking cows.

In other words, bylaws should not coddle farmers in their land-investor role, especially when they demand a sky-high house-size limit to inflate the selling price of their land.

Despite Roston’s input, the council members who fawn on landed farmer-investors clung to an imagined duty to assure their wealth. So, we have a bylaw that allows huge farmland houses up to 1,000-square-metres, as specified by the head farmer-investor.

Skewed council thinking has persisted, even though the farmer-investors revealed their perspective early on. One even said, “The elephant in the room is land value,” but some on council wouldn’t heed it if it sat on them.

In contrast, Richmond could have progressed toward protecting our battered farmland and the fragile status of newer lessee farmers — with livelihoods at the lessors’ whims. They are the future that an oblivious council squashes.

We’ve needed to mourn, but let’s get back to celebrating our citizens who made success possible (even though it got blocked). Let’s renew our focus, energy and resolve, and let’s keep up the thoughtfulness.

The trick is to start. Please take a moment to be one in spirit with our farmland lessees, voiceless but vital.

Without a personal insurance plan that features reasonable premiums and low deductibles, you may be on the hook for the damages that your leaker dishwasher causes to adjacent units, says Lo. “It’s important to check the strata bylaws and records. It can be a headache, but it’s worth it,” adds Lo. A typical plan to insure possessions while providing liability coverage and a small deductible in a stratified unit will cost about $30 per month.

Of course, many older adults are deciding to downsize even further, to seniors living facilities.

If that’s the case for you or a loved one, Lo notes insurance is still needed, in much the same fashion as insurance for your condo or apartment.

Additionally it’s important to insure expensive devices such as hearing aids, which can easily pop out and be lost.

Personal possessions of all sorts can be covered under a homeowner or renter’s insurance plan, notes Lo.

As opposed to a telephone call to a big bank, Lo says stepping into a Ben Jones office provides for face-to-face interaction that can allow the agent to glean more information in order to provide the best policy.

In many instances, landlords are requiring renters to buy insurance before a lease agreement is signed.

Stopping by Ben Jones will ensure you’re protected from disasters, however big or small.

“This protects both parties,” says Lo. So, if you’ve either kept your home and are renting it out, or you’ve added a secondary suite, be sure to get the necessary coverage and review it on a regular basis.

n An inclement spring storm certainly put the wind up Richmond on Tuesday, with 70 to 80 km/hr gusts recorded at YVR. n apparent gap in communication has been exposed between the BC Ambulance Service and Richmond Fire-Rescue after a collapsed and bleeding man waited 25 minutes for an ambulance.

While the man in question is OK after the Steveston incident and 25 minutes might not seem long in a non-life threatening situation, some people — including the Good Samaritan who called 9-1-1 and the local firefighters union — are shaking their heads at the fact available crew members at a nearby firehall were not tasked to respond.

The concerned 9-1-1 caller (who asked not to be named) told the Richmond News how he said “ambulance” when asked by the dispatcher what service he needed and then described to a second person how the man in distress — on Bayview Street on Saturday, May 13 — had collapsed, had some kind of seizure and was bleeding from his head.

The man who called 9-1-1 was surprised, and concerned, to learn the information he gave didn’t merit a “first responder” type situation.

“Whether the dispatcher didn’t understand the severity of the situation or there was a hiccup in the system, I don’t know?” he said.

“He came out of the fit or seizure he was having, while I was still on the phone. He had blood on his head.

“I later heard, through a friend, that the firefighters were sitting at their station nearby; they didn’t get the call. I don’t know who’s to blame.”

When told that the BCEHS didn’t give Richmond Fire-Rescue the shout

to respond that night, based on the city’s “response plan,” Tim Wilkinson, Richmond’s deputy fire chief, was also surprised, given that he was heavily involved in creating the plan.

“There are about 1,700 different call types; the system is very complex, to be fair to BCEHS,” Wilkinson told the News.

“There’s only one category we wouldn’t respond to; “omega” level, which is at the lowest end (when you would call BC NurseLine).”

Meanwhile, Corey Parker, president of the local firefighters union (IAFF Local 1286), said this kind of situation is “happening more and more.”

“In this instance, there was a firehall just a few minutes away that could have helped; I’ve checked and they did not have a call at that time.

“We’re not saying we can do (a paramedic’s job), but there needs to be attention on BC Ambulance.”

“At the end of the day, it’s about the service levels to the citizens of Richmond...I find it absolutely incredible that we had our members sitting five minutes away, when this man was lying in the street.”

BCEHS spokesperson Preet Grewal added that, based on the information received, the incident was deemed as non-life-threatening.

“We do need to prioritize life-threatening calls...that sometimes leaves non-life threatening patients waiting.”

ith the final count for the provincial election complete and showing no party with a majority, separate negotiations between BC Green Party leader Andrew Weaver and the two major political parties — the BC Liberals and BC NDP — are set to begin in earnest.

Premier Christy Clark said in a statement to media on Wednesday that it is her responsibility to move forward and form government.

But Weaver said, “The premier has a responsibility to ensure that she gains the confidence of the house to form government,” he said.

“So, I would suggest that that was a bit premature, because we have not tested the confidence of the house yet; but negotiations are ongoing and that may happen, or it may not happen, depending on the negotiations that we have.”

Weaver has given no indication which party he might support in a minority government.

Electoral reform to include proportional representation and banning big money from political campaigns are among his priorities.

The Greens have three of the 87 seats in Victoria but got nearly 17 per cent of the popular vote.

Should Clark not be able to form a government, she could ask Lt. Gov. Judith Guichon to call another election. Political scientist David Moscrop believes this would be politically unwise for and that Guichon would likely give the NDP and Greens the opportunity to strike a deal to govern.

Should Clark’s Liberals find themselves on the outs, it means Richmond would have four backbenchers, a far cry from last term when Linda Reid was Speaker of the House and Teresa Wat was in charge of two ministries.

In Richmond North Centre, incumbent Wat, who served last term as Minister of International Trade and Minister Responsible for the Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism, was the only winner to receive more than 50 per cent of the popular vote. She received 52.5 per cent of the votes. The riding had an estimated voter turnout of 45.6 per cent, well below the provincial average of about 60 per cent and expected to be among the lowest in the province.

In Richmond-Queensborough, the final tally showed rookie Liberal Jas Johal winning by 134 votes over Aman Singh of the BC NDP. It was the city’s most closely contested riding, with a 41.4 per cent to 40.8 per cent difference.

In Richmond-Steveston, voter turnout is estimated at 61.6 per cent, above the provincial average. There, incumbent John Yap secured his fourth term with 47.6 per cent of the popular vote, his worse showing of those four elections since 2005.

Meanwhile, incumbent Reid won with 48.9 per cent of the popular vote in Richmond South Centre, against Coun. Chak Au. It was the first time since 1991 that support for the long-time MLA dipped below 50 per cent.

Support for the Green Party in Richmond ranged from 10.5 per cent to 13.1 per cent.

Family gets death threats Keith Fraser

A

young Richmond girl was spirited away to Vancouver Island for protection after her gangster father and the family received death threats from two contract killers well known to police, according to a family law court ruling.

The girl, four years old at the time, was accompanied by her grandmother and was hidden away with a succession of friends and relatives until the threat had been investigated by police and child protection services officials.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Robin Baird said that what caught his attention was the readiness with which the dad, a “self-proclaimed” gangster who is only identified by his initials in the judge’s ruling, accepted the threats to be genuine and the immediacy and urgency of his fear.

“The Vancouver police gang squad considered the threats to be highly credible and I think they were right,” said the judge.

“For a number of harrowing weeks, in other words, the respondent’s dangerous lifestyle and violent associations created a fugitive of his own daughter.”

The recounting of the dramatic tale took up a good deal of time at the family law trial, which dealt with issues of child maintenance payments and suitable guardianship and parenting arrangements after the dad, 50, and mom, 32, had separated from one another.

The judge noted that the dad’s initial re-

action to the crisis in the summer of 2015 was highly revealing in that after the mom reported the situation to police, he asked, “Do you want to get me killed?”

“He declined to take advice from the Vancouver gang squad, saying, ‘You look at these things as police officers; I look at them as a gangster.’”

Although the dad opposed help when his child’s life was under a “present and credible threat of murder” and thought of himself first, the mom came up short as well, said the judge.

“She was offered police protection and advice, but turned it down in a huff when detectives started asking her pointed questions about her own affairs that she didn’t want to answer.”

Fortunately, no harm came to the family and no further threats were received.

About two months later, child protection workers re-evaluated the case and decided there were no continuing security concerns and Vancouver police decided to close their file, according to the ruling.

The judge concluded that the threats likely had to do with the gambling addiction of the dad, a Chinese man who for years has been subject to a deportation order back to China that Canadian authorities haven’t been able to enforce because Chinese authorities don’t want him either.

The contract killers with whom the dad had been friendly with for years had, it seemed, turned on him because he owed them money, said Baird.

The threat was abated when the dad apparently paid off his debt.

Canadian intelligence officials (CSIS) and whistleblowers have reportedly raised similar concerns.

Huang said foreign money pouring into real estate is another attempt to “buy influence.”

However, Huang is seeing signs of progress.

“We have seen the number of people supporting us grow and grow. . . As long as they see a voice in the Chinese community, this will give them confidence to speak out.”

And yet local politicians who speak out against China’s human rights and anti-democratic values are still few and far between, with Chiu being an exception, said Sung.

In fact, one incident, last October, where Richmond-Steveston MP Joe Peschisolido wore a Communist red scarf and helped raise China’s flag at Vancouver City Hall while standing next to Consulate General Liu Fei, represents, at the least, an error in judgement and at most, a calculated political move to side with pro-China forces. Chiu believes the latter, while Peschisolido said it was the former.

Peschisolido told the News he agrees with Lam’s premise that human rights and economic ties are not mutually exclusive.

“As our relationship becomes more stable and interrelated, you can have a more frank discussion,” he said.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie has also attended several pro Communist China events, including with Liu, explaining that he is there on behalf of Chinese immigrants who live in Richmond.

Notably, Huang and Chiu both believe Liu overstepped boundaries when she criticized the new provincial foreign home buyers’ tax — another signal of China’s emboldened hand.

Although, Peschisolido noted Canada is a free country and Liu “has her views,” that were met with strong reaction.

Regarding the tax, Huang was asked why it was implemented if he believes politicians are too beholden to Chinese influence. He said the BC Liberals were pressured to change only by an outraged public that was impossible to ignore.

“No government is willing to do things unless they are pushed,” concurred Sung.

Mainland Chinese immigrants may become reclusive after being “challenged by a new culture,” said Chiu. Additionally, they are not accustomed to democracy, be it voting or criticizing the government (unlike the Hong Kong and Taiwan diasporas).

And yet others, who may be less sympathetic to the motherland, fear retribution by the state if they speak out.

“I hear concerns that whatever they say here can be reported or monitored (by the Chinese government) and it hurts their business back home. Now, whether that’s true or not...,” said Chiu.

This silence sparks concern for Chiu that powerful, undemocratic influences will continue to alter the local political culture, as well as the business community.

“As China becomes more confident, it will assert the way it does business,” he argued, noting cases such as the recent alleged extrajudicial jailing of Canadian John Chang, owner of Lulu Island Winery, is a sign of things to come.

Chiu said, “the only light at the end of the tunnel” he sees, is if new Chinese-Canadians speak out. As well, he is an advocate of the Canadian government engaging diplomatically with China on human rights.

But Sung is concerned a powerful complex has developed between pro-China forces, the real estate industry and local politicians keen on promoting a healthy economy, however flawed as it may be.

Sung argues because the local and provincial economy has become so dependent on real estate (transfer taxes, construction jobs), politicians are becoming beholden to this foreign influence. Political donations from the pro-China lobby serve to further silence criticism of the Chinese government and prop up its soft power.

“Some of them don’t even live here and they have influence on our public policy. You think that’s fair? I firmly believe that’s not fair. And that’s not justice. That’s not a Canadian society I want to see,” argued Sung.

“Why would Canada allow dirty money to come in, without questioning the source of it? And also allow those people that have shown those kinds of behaviours in the past, once they enter Canada, to allow them to shed their past and say, ‘Hey we forget about the past, we start a new life again.’ That’s not an ideal situation. The worse situation is those people still maintain their ties in China and still undertake those sort of prejudices, without us knowing, and then squeeze out day to day, hard-working tax-paying Canadian citizens,” argued Sung.

“If we don’t speak out against those practices, they will become the norm because they think there is no negative consequence if I take this route. It’s a slippery slope,” she said.

Lam said what is occurring here and around the world is the “the export of a corrupted culture.”

Activist Louis Huang, of Surrey, who works in Richmond, protested a pro-Mao event last September in Richmond.

“It’s a matter of fact that the Chinese government violates human rights. It’s a long history. And this issue is getting worse in the last few years,” explained Huang.

He believes China is sending “agents” to Canada to meddle in local politics and the Chinese community in Richmond.

“In our Chinese community, everyone knows this. They are close friends to the Consulate General. There is tons of money being spent to influence local politicians,” said Huang.

“This is a threat to Canada and a threat to our community, our culture and our institutions,” said Huang.

Big Canadian 150 party n Juno Award winners Wintersleep will headline the Richmond Canada Day in Steveston main stage on July 1.

he City of Richmond is hosting the “ultimate birthday party” in celebration of Canada’s 150th year of Confederation.

The brand new Richmond Canada Day in Steveston will feature a free, full-day street party throughout Steveston Village along side the much-beloved Steveston Salmon Festival.

A headline performance by Juno Award-winners Wintersleep and fireworks over the Fraser River will cap off the celebrations.

“There’s no better time to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary than on our nation’s birthday,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“This year our Canada Day celebrations will be Richmond’s biggest yet with the new street festival, great musical acts, expanded programming for the Steveston Salmon Festival and, of course, fireworks over the Fraser River.”

Highlighting the day is the Steveston Salmon Festival, known as Canada’s biggest little birthday party, the festival is famous for its salmon barbecue where more than 1,200 pounds of wild salmon filets are grilled over open fire pits.

A Canada Day Parade through historic Steveston village kicks off the festival and this year’s Salmon Festival also features Canadian blues rockers Tom Lavin and the Legendary Powder Blues, a food truck festival, a Carnival Zone featuring attractions for all ages and a midway.

Elsewhere in the village, there will be diverse entertainment on six stages, including Main Stage performances

by Wintersleep, Vancouver’s own blues duo Harpoonist & the Axe Murderer and up-and-comer dream-pop band, Youngblood.

In addition to the live music filling the streets, guests will be invited to explore the village with activities from the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic site down to Imperial Landing and extending to Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site.

The Riverside Village at Imperial Landing and Britannia Shipyards will feature a mix of more than a dozen historic and notable ships available for free boarding from June 30 through July 2.

hen Heather Joosten-Fair and Annette Jakubowski first met in Richmond in the summer of 1987, the two women shared a dream: both wanted to open their own dance school and to teach dancing.

Thirty years later, that dream is as strong as ever, and together with their partner, Jozef Jakubowski and a faculty of 35 teachers, they’ve made a deep impression on the lives of many Richmond dancers.

But back in ’87, the two were just getting started.

Jakubowski had grown up in Victoria, BC, learned classical ballet and performed with the Stuttgart Ballet in Germany from 1977 to 1982.

When she returned to B.C. she taught at various schools in Vancouver, but yearned to open her own academy of dance.

Joosten-Fair was a dance instructor at the Peggy White Dance Theatre in Richmond, and had been taking jazz, lyrical and tap classes with its owner, Peggy White, from the age of two.

By age 11, she was teaching and choreographing dance for other students and knew teaching dance was her destiny.

White, meanwhile, was ready to retire — but not to see her dance school disintegrate. With an eye on the future, she introduced Joosten-Fair to Jakubowski, and the two women hit it off immediately.

“It was two separate worlds that interested us, — jazz and ballet — but we shared the goals of wanting to nurture and bring up the next generation of dancers,” Jakubowski said.

The three partners purchased – Annette Jakubowski the school, which had 80 students at the time and was located at 8700 Alexandra Road.

They renamed it the Richmond Academy of Dance and got to work teaching their students to dance.

As they gathered momentum over the years, they noticed a diversity of artistic skills was crucial if their professional-level dancers were to pursue careers in the arts. Gradually, Joosten-Fair and Jakubowski increased the disciplines offered at the academy.

Today, they offer musical theatre, acting, vocal classes, contemporary dance, modern, lyrical, anatomy (a class in which dancers learn about anatomy and injury prevention through movement), pilates, tap, hip hop, contemporary ballet, classical ballet and jazz.

“Sometimes, our students come in wanting to study ballet or jazz and we discover they have an amazing voice, or that they are talented at choreography,” Joosten-Fair said.

“Now, all under one roof, there are possibilities to search out individual strength and passion and we can help them achieve their dreams.”

Today, the Richmond Academy of Dance has 550 students in various divisions. And its four practice rooms on River road are filled with the graceful movements of dancers all day long. A quarter of the students are serious dancers interested in pursuing careers in the arts.

And 47 of the students are boys, the majority of them in hip hop and tap classes.

“We get such joy out of seeing students’ progress, and we get more and more excited about what else we can bring to the academy,” Joosten-Fair said.

“Our underlying respect for each other has deepened over the years,” added Jakubowski.

“It’s such hard work to seriously train young dancers.

Yes, it’s rewarding because there’s so much joy, but it’s also incredibly hard work, and that has brought us closer together.”

Both women are proud of the reputation their academy has developed.

“We’re renowned for teaching students not just dance, but how to work hard, and what it means to do your best,” Jakubowski said.

“That takes us years — you can’t just push a button to get it, you have to apply yourself.

In Canadian Estate and Tax law, the different assets Canadians tend to own get varying tax (and other legal) treatment.

For example, money invested in an RRSP gets you a tax credit and on death, the RRSP can be passed on to a spouse without a tax consequence. No such luck with a rental property you may own.

But this kind of knowledge is important to have because it can help in your planning. It is also an essential part of Will preparation. There is no point in dealing with a TFSA in your Will if you have already named your adult child as the designated beneficiary.

I

’ve been wanting to revisit the issue of some of Richmond’s most dangerous areas for road cyclists.

It’s been six months since I brought this to the attention of city hall and, today, something happened that compelled me to do this now.

I was riding my bike west down Westminster Highway on the right hand side between No. 8 and No. 6 roads when a truck pulled up along side of me.

When I looked over, the passenger window went down and the driver of the truck said, “There’s a bike path on the other side of the road.”

Since I was riding at 40 km/h, this wasn’t the best time to chat, but I told him that city hall is aware of the safety issues with that path. I’ve had too many close calls there so I’m good here. I told him I appreciated his concern, he waved and drove off.

In the Nov. 18, 2016 edition of the Richmond News, my open letter to city hall was printed and I listed the pathway along Westminster Highway as one of the five, most dangerous places in Richmond for road cyclists to ride.

It included driveways with tall hedges butting up right against the pathway, so cars coming out need to edge out into the middle of the pathway to even see if there is a bike coming.

Also, as the path is shared with pedestrians and others — is it wise to have road cyclists who ride at considerable speed on that path?

No, it’s not. I ride this stretch almost every day and I’ll say now what I said then: “This stretch of road is wide enough to support cycling shoulders with just a little effort as these lanes are wider than Gilbert Road, where cyclists are encouraged to ride.

So, what about the worst offender on the list of dangerous places?

The railroad tracks at Westminster Highway, just by No. 9 Road. Six months. Nothing.

Ted Townsend, speaking on behalf of city hall in the Nov 18, 2016 Richmond News, said that the city was waiting for CN to upgrade their crossing.

Still to this day, cyclists and pedestrians must cross a small, bumpy piece of blacktop with vehicles, mostly 18-wheelers. What’s the speed limit there?

Well, there is a sign posted not 20 feet from that crossing, telling all traffic the limit is 60 km/h.

Could the city not put up signs on the road leading to the choke point telling traffic that people and bikes have to cross with them and to slow down or yield at that crossing?

I bet if I was in charge of a piece of land in Richmond and it was unsafe to vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians the city would pay me a visit telling me to fix that area.

Could I put it off for six months, knowing that every day, I am endangering the lives of people on that land?

I don’t think city hall would allow that. So then why can city council and Mayor Brodie get away with endangering peoples’ lives every day at that location?

City hall needs stop waiting for CN and step up before another cyclist is injured or killed in Richmond.

It’s a simple theory that goes a long way to explain the success of the Richmond Field Hockey Club.

The 47-year-old non-profit organization has produced plenty of talent since its inception and this season is no different.

Six players were recently named to Field Hockey B.C.’s U15 provincial team program. That’s an impressive number given the size of RFHC compared to some of its neighbouring clubs.

Many alumni have gone to play at the university level on both sides of the border as scholarship athletes. Some have even had the opportunity to play for their country.

Helping to enhance players’ potential is Stellar Jay’s — a development program that initially was introduced by legendary coach and club builder Lance Carey years ago. It is offered in addition to regular team practices and games.

“Lance was huge in kids going through that long term development and we thought we needed to keep that name. It is a program dedicated to him without him kind of knowing,” smiled club president Kathleen Wong.

For the past five weeks, players have been coming to Minoru Park on Thursday nights for sessions led by Canadian Field Hockey Hall of Famer Nick Sandhu and his daughter Poonam — a one-time national team player. Former RFHC standout and University of Maryland grad Kathryn Masson also provides goalkeeper training while RFHC coaches are encouraged to participate.

It’s an ideal way for Sandhu to get his message across to everyone.

“I’m always interested in developing the game and doing it the right way. I’ve been coaching for years now at every level,” said Nick, who is also involved in the field hockey equipment business through his AK Pro West Sports store. “This is a good club to begin with and a lot of good players have come out of it. What we are trying to do is bring a different voice and a different way of doing things.”

“Having the same consistent message going out there is better for the club. That’s why we wanted the coaches involved.”

Sandhu stresses the technical side of the game.

If players understand that, their confidence and ability will grow. Most importantly, they will want to keep playing.

“If they learn it the right way from step one, then it becomes easier to play. It’s the little things, as simple as how they are holding the stick,” he ex-

plained. “That is something I always notice and it makes a difference in how you can stop the ball.

If you make the right changes, then the rest will just take care of itself.”

Sandhu’s philosphy compliments the club’s objective and that’s getting players skill level up to a certain level before they even take to a full field for game action.

“Most parents just want to come out and watch their kid play in a game with goals being scored,” laughed Wong. “Field hockey is such a skilled thing and some kids will be in our program for three or four years before they even play in games. The parents will finally see that once they hit U11 or U12 and and then understand their kid has got it. It’s such a skill thing.”

RFHC is also gearing up to host the B.C. Field Hockey U13 Club Festival June 3-4 at Minoru.

The event will also include a boys division — a component the club would love to offer again.

Richmond had a reputation of being among the top boys programs in the province, producing such players as current national junior men’s coach Indy Sehmbi.

“Its the first time the championships is running the boys and girls tournaments together and we’re excited because it maybe creates awareness to boys who might be playing other sports,” added Wong.

The recognition continues to pour in for Leah Lum’s outstanding junior season with the University of Connecticut women’s hockey team. The Richmond native was the Huskies’ leading scorer with 29 points on 18 goals and 11 assists, earning team MVP honours.

For her career, she now has 32 goals and 61 points. The sports management major was also was named the national winner in the sport of women’s ice hockey as an Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education. This past week, she was named one of UConn’s assistant captains for the coming 2017-18 season. The Richmond News is proud to recognize Leah as athlete of the month for May.

ichmond City Chuckers defied the odds just to reach the semi-finals of their own Victoria Day Tournament but they weren’t going to slow down an Alberta juggernaut.

The Chuckers’ bid to capture the 15U AAA 10-team event ended Monday morning with a semi-final loss to the Okotoks Dawgs. The academy team, from the Calgary suburb, then capped a perfect weekend at Blundell Park by steamrolling WestCoast 9-0 in the championship game.

Richmond entered Sunday’s final day of round-robin competition with a 1-2 record and needed a win and much more to keep its title hopes alive. An impressive 5-0 triumph over another Calgary area team also helped their run differential cause, while WestCoast provided a huge assist with wins over Chilliwack and Parkland — vaulting the Chuckers into second place.

“Starting yesterday, we probably had 100-1 odds of getting into the semi-finals but that’s sometimes how baseball goes,” smiled head coach Shawn Hetherington. “It was awesome just to get there, then against a team like Okotoks, we pretty much knew we had to be perfect. To commit a few early errors made it almost impossible to come back. They have a lot of big boys who swing well right through the line-up and they pitch well too. We knew we had to play our best to hang with them.”

The Chuckers’ closed out the tournament with an 8-4 loss to the Delta Tigers in what was a rematch of last year’s championship game. Still, Hetherington had his eye on the bigger picture too which was a weekend full

of excellent opponents and building towards the B.C. Minor provincial championships in late July which Richmond happens to be hosting.

“We have been on a growing path since the start go the season and moving in the right direction,” continued Hetherington whose team owns a 10-3-1 league record.

“We have a good mix here — older guys who can lead the team and younger guys who are developing.

“We have the advantage of hosting the provincials so our approach can be more about development than cut throat having to win every game to make sure you get in there. We keep reminding them to keep that focus and get to our best at the end of the season.”

Hetherington’s arrival is part of a new chapter for the highly-regarded Richmond City Baseball program after an impressive long tenure by Alex and Ryan Klenman. Alex remains with the team in an administrative role while the coaching reigns have been handed over to Hetherington and his staff that includes Jack Thompson and Steve Hepburn.

Hetherington was a standout pitcher for the UBC Thunderbirds who went on to play for the Calgary Vipers of the North American League before taking his career to Europe and Australia. He returned home to complete his Masters of Kinesiology at UBC and also teamed up with Thompson to launch 5 Tool Baseball.

“Jack and I started a training company because we knew what we had to offer,” added Hetherington. “We started working with a bunch of these guys and got approached with this opportunity. It’s a good group of kids and we love coaching the game.”
