was at the Richmond Arts Awards on Tuesday night to present the Arts Education Award.

In my little spiel before opening the envelope, I talked about the category’s three nominees: Mr. Tony, an insanely popular art teacher who works magic with kids; Shelley Long, an elementary teacher whose passion for dance has created a particularly poignant connection with an autistic boy; Melanie Devoy, who runs a school art program, bringing kids into the Richmond Arts Gallery and taking the gallery back to their classrooms through resources and curriculum ideas.

It occurred to me that each one of these individuals, in just this single category, has impacted my life in one way or another.

Mr. Tony actually taught my daughter at one of his summer art camps, inspiring her to take risks and trust herself.

Long built an inclusive world for a boy with autism, a condition that has touched my family. Loved ones of these kids are eternally grateful to those precious teachers who find a way to let them shine.

And Devoy I met a couple of years ago at an art show opening. Her enthusiasm and strategies to ensure the gallery not be seen as some elite enclave has drawn me back there.

Guest speaker Christopher Gaze, artistic director of Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival, illustrated the same point about how art impacts us all, albeit far more eloquently.

“If you’re confused and say ‘that’s Greek to me,’ you’re quoting Shakespeare. If you recall your ‘salad days,’ you’re quoting Shakespeare. If you’ve ‘played fast and loose,’ been ‘tongue tied’ or ‘hoodwinked,’ you’re quoting Shakespeare.”

The point being, not only has Shakespeare informed our language, but art imbues every aspect of our lives, enriching them in, often, unexpected ways.

This concept is not a hard sell at an arts awards event. However, at the soiree following, I talked to a young man who has initiated an art project at Aberdeen Square, described as “a new wave of experimental creativity.”

He’s thrilled with the opportunity to do this work, but he makes no money from it and is not sure how long he can continue.

The winner of the Youth Arts Award, Anna Toth, is a remarkable musician with a heartstopping voice. And while music is her first love, last year at about this time, she decided to apply to law school because, as she told me, she couldn’t continue to perform original, award-winning work only to be handed a Starbucks card at the end of the evening.

The arts awards is a fantastic opportunity to highlight some great work.

But, if we just laud the arts without actually supporting those who create it, we’ll be ignoring the advice of that guy who once said; “To thine own self be true.”

Voters set council term limits Term limits, yes Dear Editor, Re: “Term limit for council?” Letters, May 12.

I’d like to suggest to the letter writer that there are limits in place, as decided upon by voters, who ultimately have a say in how long someone spends on council. Using your right to vote seems fair enough? But everyone gets to do so, and so that’s how it’s determined.

If some stay on over time, it’s because some others have put them there... even if it’s not your choice, that’s done in fairness to all. Removing members based on someone not supporting them seems a bad direction to go in. The majority decides, not individuals who didn’t see things go their way.

There are reasons they remain in place, because many feel they’ve done a great job and trust them to continue to do so. Members of longevity bring experience, history and knowledge that can be shared and ultimately provide a balance to newcomers. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke.

Everyone who is granted the opportunity to vote gets to decide who is/is not part of council. That is a fair way to ensure that representation for all voices is in place. Setting time limits to plow through members doesn’t seem necessary or fair. It seems short sighted (literally).

Now, more than ever, we need to ensure that those in place do have

different ideas that are shared. As we see our city changing, those “old” ideas represent values and history that many of us hold near and dear as part of our culture. There isn’t a “best before” expiry date on that.

It’s ridiculous to argue that ideas can’t be changed and that newer council members are somehow helplessly “stuck.”

Hogwash.

They aren’t cut out for a job as a leader with that mentality. Defeatist attitudes that convey that somehow someone else is responsible for their success or failure. They have been granted an opportunity to convince others of why their ideas are good ones and, if the “old” ideas remain firmly in place and difficult to change, it’s for a reason. It simply signifies that they are thought to be the best ones, that’s all. If you fill council with like minds and one vision, it probably won’t suit everyone.

So, instead, you fill council with a diverse group...new and old, to ensure a balance is met.

If longstanding members are problematic to some, I’d challenge why that is. It’s their issue, not one of a system that’s served us well and covers all the bases. You don’t get rid of members so some have a clear path through.

It shouldn’t be that we rely on moving some out of the way to allow others to accomplish their goals. Working

together and compromising so that all ideas become a shared vision is vitally important. And that is supported by having old and new ideas at the table.

Some are extremely vocal lately, as they strive to change the face of our city. It’s how they make a living.

But there is something that they are missing that’s important to the rest of us — quality of living is also at stake here.

The longevity of some councillors brings piece of mind to those of us. For we know they continue to fight, hard, to preserve and protect our vision as we’ve known it, for it is being threatened.

I couldn’t agree more with most of Mel Goodwin’s letter in the Richmond News.

I say most because I don’t agree with the age limit of 70. Being a 70-year-old myself, I do not subscribe to the idea that all 70-yearolds would be incapable of doing a good job as a city council member. Some of us have more ingenuity and creativity, not to mention common sense, than many 40-year-olds, or younger.

I do agree, however, with a consecutive term limit. Two or three terms, consecutively, should be

Mr. Goodwin asked for support on this issue. He has mine, but how do we move forward with this? A referendum?

Council isn’t likely to volunteer to vote in such a constraint upon themselves without serious encouragement, to put it as kindly as possible.

The Four Corners rule and the Armchair rule (for Will interpretation)

The issue of interpretation of a Will arises often, and there are rules for how to interpret an ambiguous Will. In March, reasons were released in the case Kenoras v. Smith, in which the deceased had children from one marriage and children from a second marriage.

The Will’s language was unclear as to the distribution of the Estate to (all) the children. But the Court was decisive about the Will, stating that the deceased really wanted to ensure each of her children received an equal portion of the Estate. The Court carefully considered case authority relating to Will interpretation and, in my view, stated that one starts interpreting a Will by looking at the document itself (the “four corners” rule).

If that does not clarify what the Will Maker wanted to accomplish in their Will, we can then look to outside evidence (the “armchair” rule). Of course it is not always simple. It is, however, a virtue for a Will drafter to have good writing skills!

Resist the urge Limit home sizes to pave paradise Dear Editor, Re: “Paving way to pandemonium?” Letters, May 10.

Thank you to long-time resident Mary Gurney for her excellent letter against paving the west dyke.

This is an idea whose time has not come and should never come.

I am a long-time resident and use the west dyke daily. It is currently one of the jewels of Richmond and should not be destined to become a freeway for cyclists, skateboarders and rollerbladers.

It is peaceful, most of the time, and yet can be very busy with young families. Children learning to ride their bikes, groups of moms pushing baby buggies, seniors with walking sticks, dogs on long leashes wandering from side to side.

There is nature all around and beautiful scenery for the eye.

Occasionally, a motorized bike will zoom by. (not allowed, but it happens).

There are cyclists who appear to be racing they are travelling so fast. Many cyclists fail to ring a bike bell or give a verbal warning.

I have seen near misses several times. Paving the gravel path will only increase the number of cyclists flying along, at even higher speeds. The commuter cycling route already exists along Railway Avenue (the Greenway) and it is not overcrowded.

Alexa Loo, city councillors and Mr. John Irving, Richmond’s chief engineer, need to get out on the west dyke more often and they would see any idea of paving it should be reconsidered.

Save the rural and more natural feel of the gravel path for future generations.

Dear mayor and council, I feel so exasperated by the negative changes to Richmond your council has overseen since I moved here in 1985. The destruction of the wonderful neighbourhoods we had is ongoing with mainly off-shore investors parking their money in real estate and greedy realtors and developers making a fortune in flipping property.

Many of us chose to live in Richmond because of the mixed age and type of housing in neighbourhoods surrounding an elementary school. This will soon be a feature of the past as families cannot afford to buy the houses and there is less and less rental stock available.

Now, the builders, realtors and off-shore investors have turned their avaricious intentions to Richmond’s agricultural land. Please do not allow more mini-hotels of more than 10,000-square-feet to be built on our precious, agricultural land.

I cannot believe anyone really thinks they are being built for the extended families of farmers! If this bylaw is passed, it will be another dark day in the continuing destruction of our community.

While I am trying to get you to look at what is happening to Richmond, I would like to also comment on the incredible lack of foresight and planning around developments, such as the one at Fantasy Gardens Lands. Traffic is already grid-locked for much of the day at the No. 5 Road and Steveston Highway intersection. What on Earth will it be like when the latest eight-storey apartment block is completed? And as for the difficulties of driving around the Oval and the apartments being built there, well, it is laughable if it was not so sad.

Once again, I beg you to think about what sort of negative effects your pro-development at any cost policies are having on Richmond.

Please act in a reasonable manner and keep the size of “houses” on agricultural land within the recommended limits of the provincial guidelines for the ALR. Mary Phillips Richmond

Protect our farmland The house across from me was bulldozed the other day to build a house almost 10,000-square-feet in size.

They took out all the trees.

All day I’ve been watching the birds come looking for their nests.

The landowner, the developer, and the city and council that allowed this to happen are all murders.

The baby birds have just hatched and their parents were powerless to protect them. I’ve seen them come with food in their beaks and fly around confused.

They are running around on the ground looking for their families.

Why were they allowed to take out trees during nesting season?

As for the size of the house, does the family that owns this land need a house just under 10,000-square-feet? Absolutely

not.

They have no interest in farming the land; they’re building a barn for stables and horses. This gives them farm status and lower taxes, and with all the trees cut down everyone who drives by will see their wealth. This is farmland and it is ours to protect, like the birds who were trying to protect their young.

Council needs to wake up and realize they are being taken advantage of by people with money and, possibly, power. Get some backbone and stop the development of large houses as other municipalities have.

fter months of consultation and four, marathon public meetings in as many weeks, the City of Richmond has finally set the limit on house sizes on agricultural land at 10,764 square-feet.

However, unlike Monday night’s six-hour, packed public hearing — which ended at 1 a.m. the next day — Wednesday’s continuation of the same culminated with veteran councillor and farmer Harold Steves walking out of the meeting in protest.

Steves’ premature exit — the first time he’s felt it necessary to do such a thing in 30 years — produced the 7-1 vote in favour of the new house size limitations, with Coun.

Carol Day the only dissenting voice left.

Both Steves and Day had wanted the limit — which applies if the agricultural land the home is being built on is at least half an acre — lowered to around half that size, with the option to rezone for bigger if the applicant could justify it for farming or cultural reasons.

Speaking to the Richmond News via email on Thursday morning, Steves, who was at a Metro Vancouver utilities meeting, said that, before walking out Wednesday night, he produced for the audience a string of examples where luxurious homes were being built on

farmland in Richmond.

“I gave an example of a recreational property with a 12,000-square-foot house, 24-seat theatre, possible swimming pool, tennis court, cabana, and driving range, taking up the entire property. That will likely be the norm,” he said.

“I told council that the increase in the recreational housing threat to farmland is due to the lack of foreign buyers’ tax, low farm taxes, reduced education taxes and ease of exemption from property transfer tax by occupying the premises in some way for a year.

“This permits about 1,000 parcels of farmland that have not had new houses built yet, to eventually become recreational properties, with tenant farmers on the remaining land...if there happens to be any.”

About 20 of the 50 plus speakers who attended the first public hearing turned out again on Wednesday to voice their approval and disapproval of the city’s move, which was predicated by a flood of applications for ostentatious homes on farmland, some more 30,000-square-feet.

Any applications for buildings on less than half an acre would be subject to a 500-square-metre limit (5,382 square feet), which was city staff’s original recommendation for all lot sizes and is in line with the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture’s guidelines.

Also among the changes are criteria for rezoning above the new limits, which include cultural and intergenerational reasons for a bigger house size, although a need to accommodate more farm workers — coupled with an acceptable farm plan — would need to be demonstrated.

As with previous meetings, opinions expressed to council were heated and were, with very few exceptions, sharply divided; one half begging city council to adhere to ministry guidelines on house sizes to “protect” farmland erosion, while the other cautioned against curtailing farmers’ flexibility and limiting their ability to house extended

families.

Speaking after Wednesday night’s decision, Mayor Malcolm Brodie, while acknowledging that opinion on the controversial subject was divided, said the new limit is “a maximum, not a mandatory number.

“There are reasons why some people in the farming community want bigger houses.”

The figure reached, he said, is quite a “dramatic” reduction from what is happening now, prior to the new bylaws coming in.

“There are many houses in the 18,000-square-feet range and higher and there are people who would like the house sizes to go even larger,” he told the News.

“We had to come up with a reasonable maximum that will allow people (farmers) to achieve their goals,” adding it will be reviewd in six months.

Brodie admitted there is a “third category” out there who “want majestic estates.”

The new rules will take such parties out of the equation, “to a certain extent,” he added.

The bylaw setting out criteria for people to apply for a home bigger than the new limits is an attempt, said Brodie, to “give some structure to the situation.”

Day insisted, “We should be starting at 5,000-square-feet and then the ‘real’ farmers can justify the need for the 10,000.

“We’ve threatened farmland in Richmond and B.C. with this new standard. We’re now the leaders in the wrong way.”

TransLink not considering English on ads GRAEMEWOOD

ommunity activist Kerry Starchuk, who has already led a campaign against a rise in foreign-language business signs in Richmond, is now asking TransLink to consider English and/or French as a mandatory requirement on bus and transit station ads.

Starchuk contends that, much like business signs that have no English, TransLink ads create a sense of exclusion in the community.

“This form of advertising alienates and creates angst amongst local residents, newcomers and visitors who cannot understand what is being advertised,” argued Starchuk in front of TransLink’s board of directors on March 30.

Starchuk said the “exclusionary” ads fragment the community. Furthermore, she argues the increased prevalence of them is leading to a change in the “linguistic ambience” of Richmond, from where Canada’s official languages were the norm to one where French and English are eroding, and ethnic groups appear to be segregated.

Because of Richmond’s high rate of immigrants from China, the vast majority of the ads of concern are in Chinese. As such, buses and Canada Line stations often appear with Chineseonly ads.

Starchuk recommended TransLink

She said this will allow more people to understand what is being communicated.

It also reinforces TransLink’s commitment to the B.C. government’s policy to use English on government communications.

Marketing manager Angela Otto n Kerry Starchuk told Starchuk, via a letter, that TransLink cannot regulate language on ads. TransLink’s position is predicated on a 2009 court decision that ruled limiting freedom of expression violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The case arose when TransLink attempted to regulate politically-charged advocacy ads (unrelated to language).

TransLink’s argument is similar to that the City of Richmond made when it declined to regulate signage on private businesses — which Starchuk has campaigned on since 2012.

However, the city is of the opinion that it can regulate language in ads that appear on its own (publicly-owned) properties. In this case, it signed a new contract with Pattison Outdoor advertisers, in 2016, which stipulates English

should be on all ads, alongside any chosen foreign language.

TransLink is also a public body and all the ads it endorses, via its own service providers, are also on publiclyowned properties.

It begs the question why the city felt it possible to regulate language on its property and TransLink still considers this not possible.

“As it is our property, we are able to establish the standards we desire for those bus shelters,” explained city spokesperson Ted Townsend.

Meanwhile, Otto only alluded to Richmond’s bylaw situation and didn’t address Richmond’s ad contract.

Similarly, a TransLink spokesperson repeated to the News that regulating language on its ads is a Charter matter.

As such, there are no plans to consider altering policy.

However, there is no proof even a municipal bylaw to regulate language would be against the Charter, considering a few jurisdictions in Canada have their own, unchallenged language bylaws for signage.

If challenged in court, the city would need to demonstrate that mandatory English translations are a reasonable limit that can be demonstrably justified, per Section 1 of the Charter. Justification may include proving foreign language signs are a threat to community harmony, which is exactly what n Chinese-only ads, including services, business opportunities Starchuck and her supporters contend. and even jobs, are increasingly prevalent on TransLink property.

Water bans softened Port in court over coal Alan Campbell

he City of Richmond is softening up watering restrictions this summer to allow for residents to protect their lawns against the ravages of the European chafer beetle.

In recognition that the seasons are becoming more varied and unpredictable, the city has loosened the window during which a water use restriction permit can be issued in the event of someone using the biological “nematode” control method.

Instead of restricting said permit from July 15 to August 15, people can now apply for the permit for a period of 21 days, anytime Stage 1 and 2 water restrictions are in place.

The nematode application — which complies with the City of Richmond’s pesticide use bylaw — encourages a type of roundworm in the lawn, which are parasitic to the chafer beetles.

However, to find the beetle grubs, the nematodes require a moist lawn throughout the treatment to be effective, hence the adjustment to the watering restrictions.

City staff’s recommendation to replace the former nematode application timeframe (July 15 to August 15) with the 21-day window was approved unanimously by city council’s public works and transportation committee on Wednesday.

The move, according to a city staff report, brings Richmond into line with Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby and Delta.

Answering a question from Coun. Linda McPhail, city staff said that around 50 water

restriction permits were issued last year.

Staff also told committee chair Coun. Chak Au that people applying for the new permit would have to provide proof of purchase of the nematode application from a nursery.

Coun. Harold Steves, meanwhile, told the committee to brace for an exceptionally hot summer.

“The last time we had a winter like that was in ‘97/’98 and the roads at our ranch were cut off, due to the rains,” said Steves, also a lifelong farmer.

“We then ended up with the driest summer ever. So we need to be prepared.”

Last summer, the city came down hard on water wasters during a record-setting heatwave — to the tune of $208,200 in fines.

On the back of 50 written warnings, a total of 407 violation tickets at $500 each were issued, mostly in August, by city bylaw officers during Stage 3, which banned lawn sprinkling of any kind.

Earlier in the summer, eight warnings and 15 tickets at $200 each were handed out during Stage 2 (sprinkling once a week allowed) and 12 warnings and 17 tickets at $100 each during Stage 1 (three days a week, mornings only). More than 1,300 investigations were carried out during the season and the city’s hard-hitting approach during the more severe hot weather could rake in more than $200,000 in fines, depending on how many of the offenders pay up.

This year, despite a cool and damp spring, Metro Vancouver started to enforce its annual lawn watering regulations in Richmond and across the region this week and will run until Oct 15.

court case is now underway that involves several environmental groups challenging a decision by Port of Vancouver to permit at least 80 round trips of Panamax-size, coalcarrying vessels along the Fraser River, to Surrey Fraser Docks in Surrey.

The crux of the groups’ argument is that the port did not adequately consider the public interest and was biased in its decision to issue a permit for the facility, considering it benefits financially as a leaseholder.

Ecojustice, Communities and Coal and Voters Taking Action on Climate Change (VTACC) contend decision-making authority on environmental assessments ought to be at arms-length of the port and not done by the port itself, which is presently the case.

“The Port was required by law to consider this project proposal fairly. As our clients intend to prove to the Court, when the Port broke the rule against bias, it broke the law.

Plain and simple,” said Karen Campbell, Ecojustic lawyer, via a news release.

Kevn Washbrook, director of VTACC, said the port is in a conflict of interest in issuing the permit.

“There is a concern there that the port has a direct interest to approve the projects that it’s meant to be permitting. So, we’re worried the port isn’t able to balance out its public regulator role vs. its landowner role,” Washbrook told the News.

Among some of the claims is that the port executives received bonus compensa-

tion should the project go ahead. As well, the groups have learned that the port was informing the coal lobby of their actions, via Freedom of Information documents.

The port declined to comment, stating the matter is before a judicial review, which should conclude today (May 19).

The port is a federal entity and under changes to the Canadina Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) in 2012, has been given broader authority to approve projects with its own environmental assessments, noted Washbrook.

“There has to be a firewall” between the port and the CEAA, he said.

“We should be concerned the public regulators are making decisions without considering the public interest,” added Washbrook.

Among the concerns is the fact the permit never considered climate change as an environmental factor.

Noted the groups: “The Fraser Surrey Docks coal project would see up to four million tonnes of thermal coal carried by open-car rail from Wyoming’s Powder River Basin through Vancouver’s Lower Mainland each year, ultimately bound for export to foreign markets. If approved, this project could pump nearly seven million tonnes of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere each year.”

“Scientific studies have shown that coal is one of the dirtiest fossil fuels in the world.

It can lead to serious human health effects and puts our already fragile climate in further peril,” said Washbrook, noting Richmondites should be concerned about increased tanker traffic, least to mention the further industrialization of the Fraser River estuary.

Heather Joosten-Fair, one of the directors at the academy situated on River Road, told the News the night will, in part, feature a collection of performances by some of the academy’s former students who are Richmond residents.

“We have this wonderful array of guests coming,” Joosten-Fair said.

Among the grads will be: Heather Ogden, a principle soloist with the National Ballet of Canada; Alexei Geronimo, a member of the Bad Boys of Dance; Tara Williamson of Ballet BC and Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal; and Nicole Caron who performs with Alberta Ballet.

They will be joined by some current academy students.

Driving home the point Crash survivor makes deep impact on young Richmond drivers ALANCAMPBELL Staff Reporter

hey’ve heard it all before.

“Don’t drink and drive.” “Wear your seatbelt.” “Put your phone away when behind the wheel.” Etc. etc.

For many in the 500-strong crowd of Grade 11 and 12 McMath secondary students, however, there was something markedly different about Wednesday.

This time, the person dishing out the unsolicited advice to the teenagers — many of whom were learner and novice drivers — was more than qualified to lecture and had the scars to prove it.

John Westhaver was the sole survivor of a horrific traffic accident 23 years ago in a small community in New Brunswick.

Westhaver was an 18-year-old passenger that fateful day, just a couple of months before he and the two other Grade 12 occupants were due to graduate from high school.

He suffered severe burns in the crash,

consuming alcohol and jumping into cars as passengers.

But it was a more acute vision of losing friends in such a tragic scenario that shook the conscience of Grade 12 student Chris.

“If you knew their parents and had to go and see them afterwards; you made it, but your friends didn’t,” Chris told the Richmond News, after listening to Westhaver.

“I thought about what it would feel like, going up to my friend’s parents and speaking to them. I would know how my parents might feel.”

Fellow Grade 12 student Michelle Murry added that it “would be devastating to be a part of that and be the only one walking away; you get to live your life, but they don’t.”

Chris, as with his classmates, felt the difference between second-hand accounts of the dangers of driving and seeing and hearing it first-hand, from those still living the nightmare.

“Hearing it (first-hand) was really important; rather than someone talking about it from someone else’s point of view,” said

which was caused by the speed of the 17-year-old, sober, driver, who died. Westhaver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

One of the two others who lost their lives was Westhaver’s best friend.

He, in part, blames himself for drinking alcohol and, therefore, not being aware enough to tell the younger driver to slow down.

During his presentation — he is contracted

by ICBC to give talks to schools on request — Westhaver, now 41, told the students what it was like to wake up from a coma, as a burn survivor, and then find out three of his friends have been killed.

It was only then that, according to some of the McMath students, the attention of Wednesday’s audience was genuinely arrested.

“I knew it was going to be about drunk driving and road safety, but that was all. It showed how real it actually is and how it could happen.”

Erica Liu, also an N-plate driver, agreed that many among the large crowd in the McMath gym hall “weren’t super engaged” at the beginning.

“But when he got into the details of how he got injured and how his friends didn’t survive the accident…it changed,” she said. “He told us the brutal details.”

Haley Aitken, who only got her novice licence in March, said she would never have considered drinking and driving, even before Wednesday’s presentation.

“But what I also thought of was eating (while driving) and anything that’s dangerous really,” she added.

Even though she’s been getting behind the wheel since last June, Michelle said the talk woke her up to the responsibilities of a passenger, especially while accompanying an inexperienced driver.

ow that the Victoria Day long weekend is on our doorstep, warm and sunny weather should be guaranteed.

And here are four, tasty wines that are delicious out in the garden, on the patio, or while you are grilling on the barbecue.

As the days get longer and the garden is bursting with growth, it seems just right to sip wines that are light, fresh, and are either floral or fruity. The Lamberti 2015 Pinot Grigio ($13.49) from Italy’s Trentino and Veneto is a refreshing choice.

I enjoyed its bouquet of pear with a splash of nuts, and its apple, honey, and lemon grass flavours. The dry Lamberti would be great to have with grilled spot prawns in a garlic butter sauce with lemon zest, tarragon, and a splash of Pernod and cream.

Another white to savour this long weekend would be Red Rooster 2016 Pinot Blanc ($15.99) from the Okanagan’s Naramata Bench. This is a fruit salad in a glass with a cornucopia of aromas and flavours of apple, pear, and bananas. It’s refreshing, tasty, and slightly off dry so it’s a perfect aperitif. Enjoy with barbecued chicken, an appropriate choice for a Red Rooster white wine.

My favourite white is d’Arenberg 2015 The Hermit Crab ($18.49). This blend of Viognier and Marsanne from South Australia’s McLaren Vale is made in the Rhone style. There’s a beautiful nose with fruit and vanilla to entice you to enjoy the rich flavour of honeysuckle, lime, mango, and peach. I was impressed with the big, smooth mouth-feel, the sweetness on the mid-palate, the calcium minerality, and the overall balance ending with a dry lingering finish.

McLaren Vale is one of the top wine regions of South Australia, just a short drive from Adelaide, the capital. And the fact that this vintage of the Hermit Crab won a Gold Medal at the prestigious New Zealand Wine Show means you probably will enjoy it just like I did.

With a name like Hermit Crab, the obvious dish to have with this white is steamed Dungeness crab with garlic butter or Chinese style with chili sauce, garlic, and ginger. Available at Seafair and Ironwood LDB and Liberty Wine Merchant Stores, the nearest being in Ladner.

Finally, a red wine for red meat grilled on the barbie. It’s the Norton Barrel Select 2015 Malbec ($14.29). Produced in the famous Mendoza Valley of Argentina, Malbec is this South American country’s most popular red.

With half of the juice aged in French oak for a year, you expect the cigar box and pencil shaving bouquet that complements the blackberry and blueberry fruit aroma. Malbecs are like Shirazes in that they have dark red colour but they also have easy-to-like smooth tannins. The flavour has the black and blue fruit with nuances of eucalyptus, licorice, smoke, and spice to add complexity.

Why not do what the gauchos do on the Argentine pampas? Grill some juicy rib eye or T-bone steaks over a wood fired grill! Who knows, you might even do the tango to celebrate the season of outdoor living!

One significant inducement for employers to take action is the amount mental illnesses are affecting their bottom lines.

According to HeretoHelp, a project of the BC Partners for Mental Health and Addictions Information, the economic price tag of mental illness in the workplace is skyrocketing. Its website states that a recent report puts the price at $51 billion, an annual figure that includes medical costs, costs from lost productivity due to long-term and short-term disability, and costs to quality of life.

HeretoHelp also claims that mental illnesses have surpassed heart disease as the fastestgrowing, costliest disabilities in the country.

“Nearly half of the sick days workers take are because of mental illnesses like depression,” the website states. “When mental illness accompanies another disability such as a physical disability, the length of time off from work increases two to three times. For example, a worker who takes one month off work for a back injury may end up being away for two to three months if the back pain is accompanied by depression.”

And when statistics from the Canadian Mental Health Association indicate that 20 per cent of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime, the issue has the potential to have widespread impact.

But early intervention can help, states HeretoHelp. And that’s where proactive employers can play a role that not only helps their employees, but the overall financial picture of their business.

“For example, when workers get early access to treatment, companies can save $5,000 to $10,000 per worker each year,” states HeretoHelp. “They save in the cost of prescription drugs, sick leave and average wage replacement. Workers who are diagnosed with depression and who take the prescribed medication save employers an average of 11 absentee days per year.”

• Courtesy phone charging outlets with USB ports located at tables and bars throughout the restaurant.

Other new changes will be a specially designated team room, which can accommodate private parties and sports teams or can function as an extension of the main restaurant. No word on where in the Lower Mainland any new Boston Pizza restaurants with those new features will be located.

Packaging firm expands Richmond’s Great Little Box Company (GLBC) announced last week it has acquired three, new packaging production machines that will allow it to expand and enhance its offering of packaging products, including corrugated boxes, custom displays, labels, folding cartons, rigid boxes, flexible packaging, shipping and moving supplies and more. “We are thrilled to add these specialized machines to our already flourishing lineup of packaging production machinery,” said company president Brad Tindall in a press release.“We continue to invest in the highest-quality equipment to expand our capabilities and provide a seamless integration of additional services to our clients.” The first of these acquisitions is GLBC’s first Digital Label Printing press, the HP Indigo WS6800. HP is the industry leader for digital labels; this acquisition allows GLBC to conduct all digital production in-house.

he future just might be now for the McMath Wildcats.

The Steveston school continued its reign as Vancouver and District girls ‘AAA’ soccer champions with a well-earned 1-0 win over the Kitsilano Blue Demons on Tuesday at Minoru Park. The feat was hardly a given since the Blue Demons sit at No. 4 in the provincial rankings while the honourable mention Wildcats have just one Grade 12 in their starting 11.

Yet, they played beyond their years with a tactical and fearless performance that certainly bodes well at the provincial championships two weeks from now in Burnaby.

Their youth was showcased in the game’s only goal midway through the opening half as Grade 10 midfielder Dakota Chan’s superb through ball was run down by tireless Grade 9 striker Kayla Nimchuk.

Her cross from the left side was neatly re-directed by Grade 11 Lauren Dickson.

The Wildcats had other chances to pad their lead but also were very sound defensively— anchored by senior captain Georgia Booker at centre back. Goalkeepers Samantha Trueman and Ashley Pye shared the shutout.

“I don’t think a lot of people expected this team to win V&Ds again,” smiled coach Paul Pedersen.

“Kits are a strong side and we are very young. But I think these girls have the belief and know how to win.

“They can play different types of football too. It can be very pretty and it can be ugly too, if that’s what it takes to get it done. I am a very proud coach and proud of this group. I would like to say its hard work but with these guys it’s not.

They make my life very easy.”

denied semi-final berths on penalty shootout tiebreakers the past three seasons. This young group won’t have the same expectations and perhaps are even naive enough to the pressure to deliver a breakthrough performance.

The 16-team event will feature a whopping seven schools from the highly-competitive Fraser Valley zone. North Shore and Vancouver Island representation are always

strong and Kelowna is expected to be competitive too. McMath is wellpositioned to be a major force for the next two years at least but why not start now.

“For our team to have two strong (V&D playoff) games against Lord Byng and Kits sure helps. Finishing first checks off one our goals this season. Now we will see if we can get out of our group at provincials. It should be a fun little ride and we will

see how it goes,” added Pedersen.

Corner kicks….

McRoberts Strikers fell just one win short of their bid to advance to the provincial “AA” championships.

The Strikers dropped a 2-0 decision to York House on Wednesday at Hugh Boyd in a battle for the final Vancouver/Richmond berth. A day earlier, they fell 3-0 to Notre Dame.

The McNair Marlins earlier lost 4-0 to Little Flower Academy.

onnaught’s own Wesley Chiu was among the winners at the B.C. Yukon Section Annual Awards Banquet in Burnaby.

Chiu received the Male Youth Promise Award thanks to an outstanding 201617 competitive season — highlighted by a silver medal performance at the Skate Canada Challenge in Pierrefonds, QC back in December.

Competing for the very first time at the event in the Pre-Novice Division, the Grade 6 Richmond Christian student pulled off a superb long program to jump into a podium position. Chiu was sitting ninth out of 42 competitors heading into his final skate. He was among the youngest skaters in the division.

“Because they skate in reserve order,

we didn’t know exactly how well he had done,” said his coach Keegan Murphy, at the time. “We just sat there and watched him move up the standings, one by one, after the skaters in front of him had finished.”

It was the best result for a Connaught Skating in Pre-Novice Men’s since Mitchell Gordon won the event back in 2010.

Earlier, Chiu won gold at the B.C./Yukon Championships which earned him the opportunity to represent his province back east. He is now busy preparing for his 2017-18 season that will see him move up to the Novice Men’s Division. He finished first at that level in the short and long program skates at last month’s 2017 Super Series Vancouver Island Skate in Parksville.

Richmond well-represented at high performance camps

ichmond was well-represented at B.C. Hockey’s 2017 Male U15 Provincial Cup in Penticton.

The four-day event featured 160 of the top players in the province divided into eight teams for a jamboreestyle format. The participants were also put through Western Hockey League Combine Testing.

Local players participating included Seafair Minor Hockey’s Jacob Bonkowski (Team B.C. Maroon), Jaden Uy (Team B.C. Maroon), Josh Wessell (Team B.C. Maroon), Ethan Riesterer (Team B.C. Blue), Dominic Main (Team B.C. Green), Michael Abgrall (Team B.C. Green), Ty Sedivy (Team

Shawnigan Lake for B.C. Hockey’s U18 Female Invitational Camp.

The local contingent includes blueliner Kate Reilly, who made the B.C. U18 team a year ago and played for Shattuck St. Mary’s Hockey Academy in Minnesota this past season.

She will be joined by Hannah Green (defenceman), Katie Chan (forward), Jenna Ehling (goaltender), Jennifer Andrash (forward), Karina Lannard (forward), Nicole Soong (forward) and Janey Wilson (forward).

Chan is the lone 2003born player invited to the camp that will feature over 100 prospects divided into six teams.

■ The Richmond 2004B Islanders came away with a hard-earned second place finish in the Silver Pool at the U14 Spring Sizzle Tournament in Kelowna. Seeded in a pool with three older teams, the younger and more exuberant Islanders battled their way to a 1-2 record. In the playoff round, due to some stellar defence and consistent hitting, the Islanders beat South Delta ’04 and Thunder ’03 to meet the host Kelowna team in the final. The game was close for three innings but the older Heat team prevailed in the end and the younger Islanders came away with a hard-fought silver medal.

Rapid swimmers secure spots in Western Canada Games

ichmond Rapids are headed to the 2017 Canada Summer Games thanks to strong performances at Westerns and Team B.C. Trials.

Amanda McCallum, Ethan Chan, and Matthew Crawford performed well enough to be part of the B.C. contingent heading to Winnipeg in August. This quadrennial event represents the best up-and-coming age

group athletes in Canada.

McCallum was selected for the backstroke and individual medley events, while Chan will swim mid-distance freestyle races. Crawford will compete in the backstroke. Both McCallum and Chan will also swim for B.C.’s freestyle relay teams.

Six other athletes also represented the Rapids at Westerns — Samuel Pei, Eric Tong,

Mathew Meuleman, Devin Meng, Christina Tan, and Ryan Murray. Of the nine nine athletes, seven qualified for ‘A’ or ‘B’ finals. McCallum reached the podium on the first and last days of competition, with a bronze each in the 200 freestyle and 200 IM events.

At Canadian World Trials, Alex Ball’s 50 freestyle performance qualified him to compete for B.C. at next month’s Arena Pro Swim

Series in Santa Clara. The event is one of several major professional-level meets held in the US, with A-finals almost always containing multiple Olympic and World Championship finalists and medalists.

These Rapid swimmers now also prepare for the Junior and Senior National championships — on the road to Canada Games in August and Pan Pacific Trials next spring.

MCNABB, Kenneth William Dearie August 29, 1932 - May 6, 2017 Ken passed away peacefully on May 6, 2017 at the age of 84. He will be dearly missed by his wife Bev of 61 years; daughter Debra Frass (Charles); and grandchildren Stephanie and Michael. Predeceased by his siblings Jean (Ron), Charles (Lorna), Lawrence and John. Survived by his sisters-in-law Doreen and Mary-Lou Fedora (Peter); and nieces and nephews.

Ken worked for 49 years for formerly Lipsett’s, then Wheelabrator and most recently Barrday as branch manager. He was a dedicated and hard worker. He was active in the Masons and enjoyed golf, fishing, playing poker with his buddies, and trips to Hawaii with his family. A heartfelt thanks to St. Paul’s Cardiac ICU and Dr. Tony Main, and the Palliative Ward for all their support and loving care.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the University Golf Club, 5185 University Boulevard, Vancouver, BC on Sunday, June 4th at 1:00 pm in the Salon Reception Hall. Donations to St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation or to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
