hat a night.

Granted, Richmond appears to have done what most of us predicted it would — elect four Liberal MLAs to the legislature.

And, yes, polls anticipated a relatively close race in the Richmond-Queensborough riding — which it was.

Still, the fact that it was still too close to call at 11 p.m. with only a few polls outstanding, was a shocker. Moreover, those couple hundred votes either way could have swung the entire province from a Liberal minority government to a dead heat.

I was at the gathering for Liberal Jas Johal earlier in the evening, when it looked like he had it in the bag for Richmond-Queensborough. But by the time I was home pecking away at my lap top, I was contemplating calling him for some different quotes.

As we know, Johal did come through in the end. And although absentee ballots have yet to be counted, at this point Richmond has delivered yet another Liberal sweep.

But while it’s likely to be the same old, same old, in terms of wins, there are also some differences.

Richmond saw the biggest NDP increase in the province. In the Richmond-Steveston riding, NDP candidate Kelly Greene, running against Liberal incumbent John Yap narrowed the gap by 16 percentage points over 2013.

That, in itself, is astonishing, but when you add her votes to those of the Green Party candidate’s, they come out with a majority at 50.2 per cent, compared to Yap’s 47.7.

I don’t want to take away from the Liberals’ win. They deserve to be congratulated, but clearly there is some discontent in the air.

And that fact was not lost on Yap. I was also at his campaign office, and while he was clearly pleased with his win, he was far from boastful. Despite a reminder of B.C.’s “strong economic growth,” he was quick to note many of his constituents are feeling the pinch of unaffordability.

“That was something we heard very loud and clear,” said Yap. There was the same “we heard you” tone to Premier Christy Clark’s speech. The question is how this will translate into governance.

If we do indeed end up with a Liberal minority, I would agree with Clark, we have an opportunity to do politics differently.

Minority governments can be a bit like a bad marriage, full of bickering and bitter compromises, that breaks down in the end anyway. But being forced to work across the aisle could also cut against the toxic, politics of polarization that seems to be on the rise.

Call me Pollyanna with my “why can’t we all just get along” attitude, but it’s not an entirely stupid question. In fact, it’s one we’ll have to answer if the Green Party leader stands by his “non-negotiable” bid for electoral reform.

Dear Editor, During the boisterous city meetings on the issue of house size on farmland, one kind of voice has been silent.

There was no Association of Farmland lessees lobbying to keep mansions from being built on farmland.

This is an important group because, due to the high cost of farmland (fuelled by speculation), many farmers cannot afford to buy land to farm. Some manage to lease.

Farmers such as that are at the whim of the farmland owner. The owner may not want any animals.

Or, they may not like the smell of ma-

nure being spread. Or, the dust from farm equipment may conflict with their poolside activities.

Because of their vulnerability, it may not be prudent for these lessees to speak out.

A fitting limit on the landowners’ house sizes will not end that sort of problem, but it will be a start that is overdue.

Please keep it in mind when you consider whether to be involved.

The public hearing is on May 15.

Term limits for council?

Dear Editor, I moved into Richmond in 1952 after marrying my wife, who was raised in Richmond.

I bought a house from a contractor who financed the total amount, since you were unable to get a mortgage unless you were a veteran, and then only if it was acreage.

Since then, I have seen many great things happen in Richmond.

I have met and worked with many of the city council members during the years and they have done a great job.

Unfortunately, they often get stuck with decisions that were made in the past and are unwilling to make changes and unwilling to deviate as if they are stuck in the

mud.

I have been on many committees and board member and president of several community organizations, most of them had a term limit of eight years and an age limit of 70 years.

I think and would like to get some support to put some term limit on all of the Richmond council members, similar to the above.

Give it some thought. New council members often bring new ideas and enthusiasm.

Let’s make it happen.

Support food security for all Dear Editor, Richmond Food Security Society is working to inspire a robust Richmond food system through education, advocacy, and community building initiatives.

As such we support strong regulations to limit the size of homes and the farm home plate on Richmond’s ALR, and ensure farmland is used to produce food.

The City of Richmond recently endorsed the Richmond Food Charter, which was created through years of public engagement with hundreds of Richmond residents and community organizations. The Charter says that as a community we will use policy and regulations to strengthen the city’s food security, work with all members of our community to ensure a food secure future, and preserve

and strengthen land resources that support food production.

The bylaw amendments currently under consideration go against our city’s commitment to food security. It will allow homes to be built on agricultural land that are more than twice as large as Ministry of Agriculture guidelines for Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) land. This will weaken Richmond’s agricultural land base, contribute to increasing land costs, and set a precedent for neighboring communities to allow more residential development on agricultural lands.

Is an unsigned Will enforceable?

The Wills Estates and Succession Act has now been in force in B.C. for more than three years. In my opinion, the most important (and maybe the most controversial) change is that the Court now has authority to rectify an improperly made document. (The authority is in Section 58 of the Act.) Last week, reasons were handed down in the case Horton v. Bruce, in which the B.C. Supreme Court was asked to consider whether an unwitnessed Will could be rectified. Consider that, four years ago, there would have been no chance. For hundreds of years, Wills had to comply with legal requirements to be valid. That requirement has been relaxed, which is very significant.

In this case, the deceased made a Will in 1993, and another in 2011. The 2011 Will is a draft that was not witnessed. The original 1993 Will could not be found.

For various reasons, the Plaintiff ultimately only wanted an Order that the 2011 Wills revocation clause (the clause that revoked the 1993 Will) be rectified. The Plaintiff was not looking to rectify the entire 2011 Will. The Court has such authority, and found that the deceased did intend to revoke her 1993 Will.

The few cases in this area that have been decided in the last couple of years seem to be pointing in a fascinating direction. What is emerging is that any document a person may make, whether a Will, writing on a piece of paper and so forth, could now have legal force.

NDP may be happy they lost Dear Editor, So yet another vitriolic B.C. election is over, and the NDP, despite coming so close, appear to have fallen short yet again.

Despite the fact that Premier Christy Clark (a person, who, in my opinion, is totally devoid of empathy, has no morals or ethics, has been totally corrupted by big money and is on loose terms with the truth and facts) appears to have, subject to recounts and absentee votes, secured, at minimum, a minority mandate, the NDP may be better off coming up a bit short.

Take the economy.

B.C. has led the country for the last two years in economic growth. During the election, Clark was claiming that the Conference Board of Canada indicated that B.C. would also lead the country in economic growth, at 2.4 per cent, in 2017. This statistic was also quoted by the Vancouver Sun in their endorsement of Clark the day before the election. However, both The Sun and Clark (again showing her loose association with the truth) failed to acknowledge that the Board had revised their growth prediction for B.C. to 1.9 per cent (fourth in the country). It should be noted that the current budget is predicated on growth of 2.3 per cent.

The reduced growth projection for 2017, and subsequent years, will result in less government revenue and reduced (if any) job growth.

This, of course, will mean a deficit budget or reduced expenditure (with the Liberals this means cuts to the most vulnerable in society).

Under Clark, both ICBC and B.C. Hydro have been reduced to financial basket cases. Both are losing massive amounts of money.

It has been speculated that ICBC rates could increase as much as 42 per cent over the next few years.

B.C. Hydro may be even in worse shape, given that Moody’s Investments Services is considering down grading its credit rating.

Under the Liberals, Hydro has created deferral accounts that now total almost $6 billion, by far the most of any North American utility.

This money eventually needs to be repaid.

The deferral accounts give the allusion that Hydro is making a profit and thus need to pay a ‘dividend’ to the government. The fact is Hydro does not make a profit and has to borrow money (from the government) to pay the government a ‘dividend’.

The NDP’s election promise to freeze Hydro rates for a year may make good politics but is incredibly bad policy. The bills eventually

have to be paid.

A day of reckoning is coming for both ICBC and B.C. Hydro. The result will be massive cost increases to British Columbians regardless of who is in power.

Liberals love mega projects.

The Vancouver Convention Center, B.C. Place Renovation, South Fraser Perimeter Road, North West Transmission Line, Port Mann Bridge Replacement and the Evergreen Line Extension are all, among other projects, initiated by the B.C. Liberals that have one thing in common; they were all delivered late and massively over budget. The same situation applies to almost every IT project initiated by the Liberals.

Why should we believe that Site C (and the Massey Bridge) will be any different?

If the NDP was in government when the bills come due, they would be tarred with the fallout (after all they are still vilified by the Liberals for alleged sins committed in a previous century) and would spend another 20 years in the political wilderness.

The NDP is best letting the Liberals take the heat for the mess they created.

Ride into sunset, Trump Dear Editor, When other countries in the world were in conflict it eventually resulted in wars.

I’ve always been grateful that Canada and the United States had such a positive and respectful relationship. The Peace Arch at the border bears this out.

From my earlier memories, it was evident our countries were friends and neighbours who had respect for each other and provided support when there were problems. Past presidents,

including Barak Oboma, were examples of this.

Now, we have arrogant, aggressive President Donald Trump, who is doing his best to destroy the friendship and relationship between our countries.

It is my hope that all Canadians who have friends or relatives in the USA, will persuade them to reject Trump and encourage him to ride off into the sunset and fade into oblivion.

hould Richmond council (A) kowtow to ALR speculators or (B) do their job? A, or B? If you chose B, please ask council to respect our farmland and the citizens they swore to serve at Monday’s public hearing.

“We have to protect our farmland,” is the mantra of our entry-level farmers. And they’re right. If council heeds those words, all will be well.

The alternative is to cater to speculators who’ve trained council to jump for them.

Note: I’ll use the general word “speculators” to include money launderers, opportunists, farmland investors, etc.

Speculators hoard farmland as a commodity to store, build and flaunt their wealth.

That can easily conflict with the ALR as a collective reserve that stores agricultural value for the long-term benefit of British Columbians.

The Richmond farming establishment, who inherited much of their land, do care about farming. It’s lucky for them when farmland prices shoot up, but it’s sad when they lobby for non-farm mansions on ALR land to keep those prices high.

Then there’s the global “corrupt elite,” which buys expensive properties here with stolen wealth. I bet that’s contributed to the frenzy of mega-mansions planned for Richmond farmland: 25 are more than 12,000-square-feet in the first quarter of

2017, almost equaling the previous seven years.

So, how can we protect our farmland? By doing the obvious. There’s a proven solution, roughly what Delta does. A staff report explains the approach, but it seems some council members missed it or didn’t grasp it.

The essence: Limit farmland house size enough to divert construction of non-farm residences from the ALR to residential areas.

(And include a simple approval process so farmers can exceed the limit—for example, for a large extended family of farmers.)

Site Economics consultant Richard Wozny calculated the optimal farmhouse size limit for Richmond. Staff then expressed it as an option: a limit of 3,650-square-feet, plus garage. Simply making that option a bylaw would greatly reduce the problem.

Coun. Harold Steves and staff favoured a provincial limit that’s a bit higher, but it seems best to fine-tune for Richmond needs.

Shockingly, Mayor Malcolm Brodie jumped to a limit of almost 10,800-square-feet (but half of that for lots under 0.2 hectares). Only Coun. Steves and Coun. Carol Day voted against it.

Other than lopping a tier of megamansions, the mayor surrendered to the speculators, ignoring massive public input, staff expertise and Ministry of Agriculture guidelines.

RCMP continues search for missing mother R

CMP in Burnaby said a search continues along the banks of the Fraser River in Richmond for a 36-year-old woman who went missing with two other members of her family on Sunday.

Sgt. Derek Thibodeau said they are searching for the body of Yu Ling Zhang.

Police said the woman’s four-year old son, Garrick, was found inside the family’s vehicle when it was pulled from the river, while the body of her husband, Ming Dong

Xu, was found nearby.

The three were last seen leaving their Burnaby home Sunday afternoon in the family’s silver, 2006 Honda Accord.

Thibodeau said foul play is not suspected, but an investigation, including a mechanical inspection of the vehicle, is continuing.

He said Xu worked on Mitchell Island and was familiar with the industrial area where the vehicle was found, which may be why the family had travelled there.

Veteran receives overdue praise for defending Alaska PHILIPRAPHAEL Staff Reporter

H

arold Cross still remembers the chill of the frigid Alaskan weather.

It’s been 75 years, but he recalled the experience as if it was yesterday, emphasizing how the conditions were the biggest enemy during a little-known, Second World War battle he was involved with, that is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

The 96-year-old Richmond resident and veteran — who is the inspiration behind naming the restaurant at the local Sheraton Hotel (Harold’s Bistro & Bar) — was just a young aircraft frame mechanic serving in the RCAF when he was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. The mission of 111 Squadron that he belonged to was to discourage further encroachment by Japanese forces that had occupied the two easternmost islands in the 14-island archipelago that stretches into the Northern Pacific Ocean.

“It was mostly political. There was really no way the Japanese could have launched an attack on America from there, because, for one thing they didn’t have secure supply lines, like we did. And without that, they must have been in a pretty desperate state,” Cross said, sitting down for lunch at his regular table at Harold’s. “So, us being there was a way of telling the Japanese that they couldn’t come any further, not that they could, anyway.”

Cross’ squadron, one of seven Canadian

groups sent to Alaska, was meant to bolster U.S. forces after the Japanese attacked Dutch Harbour on Amaknak Island on June 3, 1942.

This June 3 will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Aleutian Campaign. And since Cross is the sole survivor from his squadron, he recently received a citation and medallion from the governor of Alaska.

Cross said he was grateful his group was being recognized for the role they played.

While they didn’t face a large amount of direct contact with Japanese during the 18 months or so stationed in Alaska, a good number of the sorties flown by pilots in the P-40 Kittyhawk fighters, Cross and the rest of the ground support crews worked on, were steeped in danger, mainly because of the severe weather conditions.

“When the Bearing Sea’s cold current meets the warm Pacific, there’s instant fog.

And it’s right down to the ground,” Cross said, adding that is what claimed lives even before some of his squadron members got into proper action.

It came with the decision to fly seven of the Kittyhawk fighters and their support staff, packed into a DC3 cargo plane, to Umnaq Island.

“We made it in the DC3, but we had to scrape five of the fighters off the top of the mountains along the way,” he said. “Four ran smack into the mountainsides because of the poor visibility. One other, we never did find.

He probably flew until he ran out of gas and went down in the sea.”

Conditions on the ground were not much better in a makeshift camp.

Cross’ squadron was inadequately supplied and only had their relatively lightweight, RCAF uniforms and no other heavy, cold weather gear. So, they borrowed overcoats from their American colleagues, making them an oddlooking crew with mismatched clothing.

“But we always wore our own hats,” Cross said with a laugh and a smile.

Strangely, there is no official, Canadian record of the Aleutian Campaign, Cross added.

“When we left, the Americans wanted to give us a medal for foreign service,” he said.

“And the Canadian government actually considered it for overseas combat service. But ultimately, they said no.

“It was a strange situation.”

Cross has been invited to attend the commemoration in Alaska, but has decided against making the journey that, today, would take a number of hours by commercial airliner from Seattle.

“In my day, that took us three full days from Pat (Patricia) Bay Airport near Victoria,” he said. “So, I’ve been there and done that.

“It’s also against my religion — I never go back,” he quipped.

T

here will be no stay of execution for the Minoru Aquatic and Older Adult centres once the shiny, new Minoru Centre for Acting Living opens later this year.

In December last year, city staff were making plans to demolish the 57-year-old structure, before city council’s parks and recreation committee asked them to take one last look at re-purposing the building for other uses.

However, after closer examination by staff, it seems that the $3 million cost of levelling the entire area was much more palatable than the estimated $27 million it would take to bring the crumbling centres up to current building standards.

As such, city council agreed this week to follow a staff recommendation to go ahead with the original plan to flatten the site and, possibly, incorporate it as green space into the bigger Minoru Park Vision Plan, which, itself, is still being constructed.

The pool at the aquatic centre and the adjacent Minoru Place (for seniors) will become obsolete when the new $80 million complex, featuring two, 25-metre pools and a seniors’ centre, is completed in late 2017 across the parking lot, at the former site of the Minoru Pavilion.

The new facility will also feature new change rooms for outdoor athletes.

Before coming to the latest decision, city staff examined the facility’s current condition, the possible types of reuse and the capital funding implications of re-purposing.

In doing so, it was discovered, once more,

that extensive replacement of building envelopes, floors and roofs would result in onerous costs, adding up, in part, to the estimated $27 million figure.

Staff also reviewed the possibility of partial demolition of the aquatic centre, but this was dismissed as “cutting in half” the building’s linked mechanical and electrical systems would not be feasible.

Demolition of the buildings is scheduled for May of 2018.

n Farmland public hearing

Richmond’s city council chambers is expected to be packed to the rafters once more on Monday evening, May 15, when a public hearing takes place into the city’s move to restrict house sizes on farmland.

Two recent city hall meetings — and some last year — drew large crowds of local residents and farmers, the former largely unhappy with city council veering away from a staff recommendation to curtail square footage of such homes to 5,382-square-feet, while the latter were, in part, content when city council agreed to double the limit to 10,764-square-feet.

Contentions were also expressed about the setbacks from the road, the size of secondary buildings on the land and the fact landowners may be able to apply for an exemption from the proposed limit for cultural and operational reasons.

City council, which placed a moratorium on farmland house applications until the current matter is resolved, was compelled to bring in tighter restrictions after a plethora of recent requests to build so-called “mega homes” on such land, with potential farmland loss and misuse among the common fears.

lmost 20 years ago, John Scott was browsing a Richmond Carvers Society demonstration when the gaze of his wife, Beryl, arrested on a beautiful, wooden carousel horse.

“She said ‘that’s very nice, why don’t you go along and make me one,’” said Scott.

Two decades later, and from the kitchen of the couple’s comfy General Currie Road condo, Beryl shouted through to the living room that “she’s still waiting” for said horse.

Still, she has a menagerie of weird and wonderful, wooden objects and creatures, lovingly carved by her husband on display and “cluttering” every shelf space available.

Feathers, owls (Scott’s favourite, one of which took four months to make), love spoons, fish, bowls and orcas feature heavily in the couple’s living room.

While carving out a smile at his wife’s protestations, Scott, a retired mortgage broker, picked up one of his dearly beloved creations — an old fashioned boot the size of a baby’s foot.

“This was my first. It took me about three months to make; I can now make one in about eight hours,” said Scott, who had no carpentry or carving experience before joining the society that day.

“They are all over the place in here; I do get told off quite a lot. We have too many, so I’m told. ‘We’ give them away now... to my children and to charity.”

Scott, who is currently the society’s treasurer, said of his passion that he’s “no good at golf” and enjoys the relaxation the hobby affords.

“It’s also very stress-relieving and a very friendly club to belong to,” he added.

One of Scott’s comrades in carving — recently retired pilot and society secretary Dave Price — fell into the hobby by accident, similar to Scott, after stumbling over a society demo seven years ago at the Steveston Farmers’ Market.

“I can’t hang a picture straight and can just about mount a book shelf, but it will likely be squint, as well,” Price said of his

previous skill set with wooden objects.

“The thing I enjoy about carving is there is a tremendous amount of mental effort required, you’ve got to think things through and, of course, when you don’t think it through, that’s when you make a mistake. But it’s a ‘redesign opportunity.’

“We sit around and talk BS and learn from each other.

There are experts there, as well as beginners, and they will always take time to teach you a new technique.”

Price said he doesn’t spend half as much time as Scott on carving, playing lots of tennis, cycling and volunteering for a local cancer charity instead.

And, by his own admission, he’s not nearly as accomplished as Scott. So much so, that Price’s wife gently advises that his creations “aren’t quite up to standard yet” to be on display and are better served decorating the garage.

“I only do about three projects a year, it’s a hobby, but it doesn’t take over my life or anything,” added Price, who’s made fish, a couple of mammals and a few mythical castles for his grandkids.

ichmondites chose to stick to the BC Liberals in all four of the city’s provincial ridings Tuesday evening.

However, the final count in RichmondQueensborough may help determine which party holds the balance of power in what is presently a minority Liberal government, following the historic 41st provincial election.

The newly-carved riding that incorporates most of east Richmond and parts of New Westminster witnessed a nail-biting, neck and neck race between the Liberals’ rookie candidate, former TV reporter and LNG lobbyist Jas Johal and the BC NDP’s fellow newcomer, and criminal lawyer, Aman Singh.

When the dust settled, Johal had 7,525 votes and was in the lead by 263 votes, with Singh fetching 7,262 votes, with absentee votes still to be counted.

Johal’s seat counts as one of 43 the Liberals have secured in the election. Meanwhile the NDP got 41 seats and the BC Green Party received a record-setting three seats that could thrust them into a “kingmaker”

With the riding of Courtenay-Comox secured by the NDP by only nine votes and three other ridings, including RichmondQueensborough, separated by only a few hundred votes, it will likely take the final count by Elections BC on May 24 to determine the winners.

If the status quo remains, the Greens could form government with the Liberals or NDP. In the meantime, Lt. Gov. Judith Guichon has asked Liberal leader Christy Clark to remain the Premier.

After the dust had settled, the NDP’s Singh told the News that his narrow loss and the NDP’s gain provincially “re-enforced the idea that people wanted change.” “(In Richmond) we increased the amount of NDP vote dramatically with a campaign targeted at regular people,” said Singh.

“It could have gone either way on the night.”

Of the narrow margin of defeat, Singh said there are no immediate plans for a re-count (0.2 per cent of a difference is required judicially before a re-count is considered).

In the same Richmond-Queensborough riding, local teacher and Green Party hopeful, Michael Wolfe — who garnered around 12.8 per cent of the popular vote — thanked all his supporters.

“Your vote was an honour to receive and has been a vote for a vision of the future that is worth fighting for,” he said by email.

In the re-worked North Centre riding, Wat cruised to her second term as MLA with 53 per cent of the vote, compared to nearest challenger, the NDP’s Lyren Chiu, with 33 per cent.

He said people wanted a “strong economy,” but he also heard a lot about housing costs.

His nearest challenger, Greene — who narrowed a 23 percentage point gap between the Liberals and NDP from last election to just nine points this time around (making it the riding’s most competitive race since 1991) — said important social issues she raised on the campaign trail will be harder for Yap to ignore.

“Tonight hurts, but while we did not win my seat we have brought issues which are vital, to all of our residents front and centre — affordability, health care, the environment, education, mental health, child care, economy, corruption; to name a few. And we will continue to shine a light where the darkness doesn’t want us to look,” she told supporters at the local NDP headquarters in City Centre.

The mom of three young children cofounded Richmond Schools Stand United, a grassroots group dedicated to increasing education funding and seismically upgrading unsafe schools.

“We will compel them to act,” said Greene.

Of her incredible seventh straight victory at the polls — a record for a female MLA — Reid said: “To create a little bit of history in the moment just warms my heart.

“I’m hoping the seventh win sustains. But this was a glorious campaign.

“No one ever does this work alone. I had a tremendously gifted campaign team. We got out every possible vote, shook every possible hand there was to shake. And I am absolutely delighted with the outcome.”

With the two parties running neck and neck on the provincial scene throughout the latter stages of the night, Reid said she was hopeful that Christy Clark would continue to serve as premier.

“That leadership and stability needs to continue.”

This was the first election since 1991 (her

NDP

first election) that Reid fell below 50 per cent in the popular vote.

NDP gets record turnout

Meanwhile, Au said that, with himself, Greene and Singh all reaching about 40 per cent of the popular vote, his party had breached Richmond.

In 2013, the NDP took 26.6 per cent of the vote while this election it took 38.2 per cent. No other municipality saw greater gains by the NDP, whose overall vote was 39.9 per cent.

“I think this is a victory . . . even though we did not achieve what we wanted at the end, and I think Richmond is never the same as before.”

Au, who will remain on city council, said his political future is uncertain. He said it was too early to digest what had happened (after expecting to win) but didn’t rule out another campaign in four years.

Notably, Au pledged, in 2014, to only run in two more civic elections.

He said it was difficult to face negative attack ads throughout the campaign; after the writ had dropped, he was the continued target of anonymous leaflets that attacked his character and denigrated homosexuals and drug addicts.

Au said he overcame the negativity partway through the election, in part thanks to his faith, he said.

He said he doesn’t foresee any change in how he’ll approach dealing with Liberal MLAs, as a city councillor, now that he has taken to the opposition.

Richmond North Centre

Of her smooth victory, Wat said her reelection was testament to how hard she had worked in her constituency, even though the boundaries were shifted and the riding was renamed as Richmond North Centre.

“I have to express my gratitude to all my constituents for their trust in democracy,” she said.

“The voters have spoken loud and clear and I am going to listen to each and every one, including those who did not vote for me.”

She added she wants to be part of a government that can provide a strong and better future for all British Columbians.

She also listed the construction of the north tower at Richmond Hospital as her main goal over the next four years.

“I will do my best to push that forward, to finalize it,” she said.

Green ‘kingmakers’ or Liberal majority?

Not to be forgotten is the role of the Green Party in Richmond. In Richmond-Steveston, Roy Sakata set a record for most votes ever by a Green Party candidate in Richmond, with 2,614 ballots, good for 13 per cent of the popular vote.

Meanwhile, Wolfe received 2,311 votes — his best showing in a provincial election.

Many NDP supporters argued the Greens would split the vote on the left wing, giving power to the BC Liberals.

In Richmond the Liberals got 47.7 per cent of the popular vote, while provincewide they received 40.9 per cent, which was still good for tops among parties — a point made by Clark at her post-midnight speech.

“We won the popular vote and we’ve won the most seats,” said Clark.

“It’s my intention to lead British Columbia’s government,” Clark told supporters.

All the leaders spoke with cautious optimism.

“They want us to work across party lines,” added Clark, who said the Liberals must be humbled by the results.

NDP leader John Horgan chose to highlight the fact 60 per cent of people didn’t vote for Clark.

“A majority of British Columbians voted for a new government and I think that’s what they deserve,” said Horgan.

Green leader Andrew Weaver indicated he’s willing to work with both parties.

Weaver may well get to choose who to form government with, should the Liberals not receive a majority of seats.

Notably, in the last election, absentee

votes accounted for nine per cent of the total vote.

The Greens were thrust into the spotlight by fetching just over 300,000 votes, more than double what they got in 2013 and good for 16.7 per cent of the popular vote.

Weaver said his “number one priority is removing the influence of big money in politics.”

Horgan also alluded to campaign finance reform.

“British Columbians voted to get big money out of politics,” said Horgan.

Weaver said little to TV reporters after midnight but did indicate his desire to move to a clean energy economy.

“LNG is not happening,” said Weaver.

“It wasn’t going to happen then, it won’t happen now . . . Let’s move on to a new economy.”

As for what a coalition government means for Richmond, Coun. Harold Steves, of the NDP, said the Liberal-planned Massey Tunnel replacement bridge could be scrapped.

“As long as the NDP and Greens have 44 (seats), we have a chance to stop Site C and the Massey bridge,” said the environmentalist.

However, many at the Richmond NDP headquarters were calling Weaver the “kingmaker” and expressed concern he would side with the Liberals to form a government.

Nevertheless, Wolfe has stated the Greens are adamantly opposed to the bridge.

This election, there were 64,383 votes cast whereas in 2013, 64,188 Richmond residents cast a ballot. This indicates voter turnout was down, considering population growth. Elections BC has not released a final count on total registered voters.

I

f they didn’t know anything about politics in B.C. before, they certainly do now.

The ELL (English Language Learners) class at Palmer secondary got a crash course in the province’s electoral process after it volunteered to run the school’s Student Vote.

The “vote” was a mock election, which took place in 1,092 B.C. schools, representing all 87 electoral districts in the province, where 170,238 ballots were cast, based on the actual candidates running.

Most, if not all, of the class — which consists of Grade 8s to 12s — are recent immigrants to Canada, making the learning curve for the students even steeper when it came to familiarizing themselves with the likes of political party platforms and agendas.

Two class members, Joe Zhau, Grade 10, and Orly Agoncillo, Grade 11, for example, both knew next to nothing about Christy Clark, John Horgan and Andrew Weaver et. al before they jumped knee-deep into the swamp that was this week’s B.C. election.

“It was a great experience for us, as we are not 18 yet and can’t vote. And it helps us learn,” said Joe, a recent immigrant from China.

Orly, meanwhile, moved to Canada from the Philippines less than a year ago and his only knowledge of elections was tagging along to a polling station with his parents in his native country.

“We had about a month to learn about the history of the election and find out about the parties and their leaders, it was quite interesting,” he added.

Ahead of Palmer’s Student Vote, Joe, Orly and the rest of the ELL class advertised the “election,” prepared the ballot boxes and information sheets about the parties, before hosting a “polling station” in their classroom the day before the election, culminating with counting the votes.

And the result? NDP: 124; Liberals: 58; Greens: 36; spoiled: 12.

All 218 students who were asked to take part voted — with five who weren’t invited also making their mark, resulting in a turnout of more than 100 per cent (rest of Richmond take note).

In the Student Vote provincially, which

has been running since 2003 2003, the NDP formed government with 60 seats, the Green Party formed the official opposition with 14, while the Liberals won only 12 seats. One independent candidate was elected.

But what did Joe and Orly think of the actual result which, at the moment, has the BC Liberals holding a super slim minority government over the BC NDP? “Kids and adults seem to think differently; students are thinking about education and adults are thinking more about taxes,” was Joe’s analysis.

Neither Joe nor Orly stayed up to the

early hours to watch the n neck-and-neck race unfold. Both had to get up early in the morning for class, which was good news for their ELL teacher, June Sanders, who spoke of the “straight-up student engagement,” as being one of the primary benefits of her class running the vote.

“From an ELL perspective, some of them are coming from a place where they believe the government is corrupt; so they’re learning the idea of a free and fair election and that people have a choice,” said Sanders.

“There is a culturalization process and the younger the voter intervention, the more likely they are to vote as an adult.”

Sanders also said the whole process was a “good bonding experience, for them and us.”

As for the students, Joe and Orly feel they’re now better equipped to make decisions for themselves when it comes to the real vote when they’re old enough.

Walking tours bring history to life

T

ravel back in time to the year 1917 and witness life in Richmond’s early days. When you join the Steveston Walking Tour Vignettes this summer, you will feel like you are walking in the footsteps of the past.

“This program will celebrate Richmond’s unique heritage and provide an immersive experience for visitors to engage with Steveston’s history,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

These guided walking tours wander through the streets of historic Steveston, leaving from the Steveston Museum and Visitor Centre (3811 Moncton Street) at 4:30 p.m. on Fridays and 1 p.m. on

Saturdays in June and July.

Along the way, Hugh McRoberts secondary drama students perform five short plays about living and working in Steveston. Drama teacher Judyann McCarthy said she is excited about this opportunity for her students. The walks are about 60 minutes long and will cover about 1 km.

“I have enjoyed working with this dedicated group of student actors on a project that takes us out of the classroom and into the world; watching them apply their skills and abilities in a whole new world — old Steveston,” McCarthy said.

“It has been a lot of fun explaining words like skedaddle, and that people used to eat wild greens, and that our little city has always had a rich cultural diversity.”

Tickets are $7. Children under 12 are free when accompanied by a paying adult (maximum two children per adult). Book in advance, as spaces are limited. or casual cyclists, there’s some good riding to be had in Richmond.

I’d like to list some of the best I’ve found over the years, and hopefully there’s something new here for you to try.

Keep in mind that most of these routes are shared with pedestrians, and because of that I strongly recommend having a bell on your bike to help let people know you’re coming.

• Away from it all: The jetty at Iona beach. Located on the north side of the airport, Iona beach is a great place for a relaxed ride alone or with friends. Riding out on the jetty and back is going to give you a 6-km ride of cool breeze and watching the planes land at YVR. If you take your bikes out in your car, make sure to spend some time on foot around the beaches, it’s worth it.

• Back road maze: Crabapple Ridge. This is actually an on-road trail that extends from Chatham Street in Steveston and goes all the way to the river in Terra Nova. It’s mostly side roads with many connecting pathways.

It can get a little confusing as you need to pay attention to the signs telling you which way to turn, but they are well marked, and also have directions painted on the ground. People who like an adventure or even a little challenge will have fun here.

• Gravel wide open: If you want to get from Steveston to Terra Nova in a much simpler fashion and away from any traffic, then the West Dyke gravel trail that goes from Garry Point Park to the Oval and beyond is for you. Cows, turtles, coyotes and more to be seen here.

Even though this pathway is quite wide, its popularity means it can get quite congested in the evening, so make sure you have a bell!

• In the shade: The Shell Road Trail. This packed dirt trail starts at Woodward Landing at the dyke close to No. 5 Road. A nice, shady ride which then takes you down a stretch of Shell Road before tucking away under the cover of trees until you reach Alderbridge.

There isn’t much to see beyond this point, so heading back the way you came is your best bet.

• Riding with children: Many of the school parks have fun pathways great for parents and young ones. Some favourites include South Arm Park, Blundell School, Garden City School and King George Park. These pathways are long and give lots of visibility, as well as close proximity to playgrounds.

These paved pathways tend to be narrow, so again, make sure you and your children have a bell.

There’s lots more out there, so explore and have fun!

tephen Cipes, founder of Summerhill Estate Winery, has a bubbly wine personality and passionately preaches about the virtues of growing grapes and making wine organically.

Another of his passions is making excellent organic sparkling wine.

Cipes and his winemaker, Eric von Krosigk, have been enthusiastic about making premium sparkling wine since they founded Summerhill in 1991.

“Both Eric and I had the same vision, which is to make the Okanagan famous for sparkling wine because of the intense flavours in our grapes that we can keep through the fermentation in the bottle. So, we set out to replant in grape varieties from France and brought them over to the pristine Okanagan Valley and grew them organically,” says Cipes.

“One of the factors is that you can detect flaws in sparkling wine .It’s the single-most awardmore easily than in table wine. And this ed wine in Canada. It’s has been our ‘claim never not won a gold medal to fame’ because our sparkling wines have since it was introduced in won the top awards 1992. around the world, including Best Sparkling – Stephen Cipes Wine in the World, in London, England,” Cipes proudly boasts.

I asked Cipes why the Okanagan is such a perfect location to produce sparkling wine.

“We have the early morning sun and the late evening sun and we have the most northern desert or semi-desert viticultural region in the world,” he explains. “This is very important because if the grapes get too much water they get fat and tasteless and watery and they don’t retain their flavour.

“If we growers can keep the water off in this semi-desert viticulture region, we can have very small, highly flavourful grapes that can hold their flavour through the second fermentation and that’s very key,” Cipes adds.

Although Cipes produces a variety of white and red sparkling wines, the flagship wine is Cipes Brut.

“It’s the single-most awarded wine in Canada. It’s never not won a gold medal since it was introduced in 1992.

That’s 25 years of gold medals, each and every year.”

Originally, Cipes Brut ($25.49) was mainly a Riesling base, but nowadays it’s a blend of Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Blanc.

Cipes describes it as “refreshing, crisp and light, and it has a lot of effervescence or mousse as we like to call it.”

I enjoyed its fresh apple and lemon fruit and the crisp dry finish. It’s an Okanagan orchard that sparkles in the glass. Cipes Brut would be a perfect choice for celebrating Mother’s Day. Cipes is quick to mention how versatile his flagship bubbly is.

“It goes with everything. If you want a wine to open a party, wow! With hors d’oeuvres, to have with spaghetti, wow! To have with a hotdog, whatever.”

If you want even more variety, Stephen Cipes and his team have produced several other sparkling wines.

The Cipes Brut Rosé ($30.48) is made from 100 per cent Pinot Noir with limited time on the skins, while the Cipes Blanc de Noirs ($39.10) has no skin contact, so a lighter style white sparkling wine is produced.

And if you want even a lighter style, there is the Cipes Blanc de Blanc ($46) made from 100 per cent Chardonnay.

ichmond Public Library is pleased to offer a series of programs to promote Adult Summer Reading during June, July and August.

This summer, adult readers can participate in a Reading Challenge, enjoy long walks and book talks with the new Walking Book Club and join for an exclusive, author talk.

The Adult Summer Reading Challenge will n Simon Choabegin June 7 and runs Johnston until Aug. 31. Participants can register in-person or online and d they can pick up their challenge ge cards at any Richmond Public Library branch.

At the end of the summer, readers can turn in their completed cards for the chance to win amazing prizes. The Challenge kicks off on June 7 from 7 - 8 p.m. with library staff presenting their favourite books of the season and offering book recommendations.

On June 17, July 15 and Aug. 19, the library will be offering will be a new adult book club, the Walking Book Club.

Each session a different book will be discussed while walking around different parks within the City of Richmond. Registration is required.

Participants can pick up a copy at the front desk of the Brighouse Branch as early as four weeks before the meeting.

On June 20 from 7 - 8 p.m. at the Brighouse (Main) Branch, Simon Choa-Johnston will speak about the background of the opium trade, the route his ancestors took and how they became involved in the trade, as well as women’s issues of the time.

This presentation will be followed by a Q&A and discussion on subjects such as history versus fiction, the morality of opium trade, the custom of wealthy men having multiple wives and how that affects their offspring.

Choa-Johnston is the author of The House of Wives, an historical novel inspired by the lives of the author’s grandfather who was a 19th century Jewish opium merchant.

Richmond F.C. proved to be the road warriors en route to being crowned B.C. Soccer’s Coastal “A” Cup champions.

The Metro Selects League girls side capped off a marvellous month with a 3-2 win in penalty kicks over the Upper Vancouver Island Tide last Saturday in Aldergrove. The girls’ run to the title did not include one game on home turf. They produced away victories over Vancouver (2-1), Port Moody (4-1) and the Fraser Valley Selects (4-3) in extra time.

The team has been a model of consistency — reaching the cup final a year ago, only to lose to the Delta Coastal Selects.

This campaign started with a tournament win in Chilliwack and Richmond went on to finish second in regular season play to Coquitlam Metro Ford.

“Last year, the goal was to get to the provincials and that was quite the accomplishment for us,” said Richmond F.C. coach Sean Lawson. “This time, the girls set out to be Coastal and Provincial Cup champions. There is a lot of parity in our league and we had a tough draw. We’re really proud of them.”

Richmond took some of the suspense out of the penalty kicks by scoring on all four of its attempts, while Upper Island missed the net and was saved on another.

A fifth Richmond shot wasn’t even required.

Lawson was quick to praise Richmond Girls Soccer technical and development coach Brent Branker who has been working with many of the girls from a young age.

Sandhu also praised fellow coaches Indy Dulay and Greg Dunham, along with the efforts of manager Bob Minato.

Special mention was given to former Richmond FC head coach Roberto Sciascia in his role developing the boys through their youth soccer careers.

2000B Islanders thrive on Cat’s weekend

R

ichmond Girls Softball Association’s 2000B Islanders and 1999B Islanders rep teams cohosted the Second Annual U18 Cat Wheatley Memorial Tournament last weekend at London Park.

The event was created in memory of Catherine Wheatley — a longtime RGSA player and coach — who passed away in April of last year from injuries sustained in a car accident. She was just 22.

The 2000B Islanders were determined to make the tournament a special one.

“Cat was not only an amazing softball player but when she finished playing ball she joined our team as an assistant coach and provided countless hours with pitching advice and mentoring our young girls,” recalled Islanders head coach Troy Cooke. “She was also known to love the colour pink.”

The team wore pink socks, belts and arm bands in in her memory.

■ 2000B Richmond Islanders played in the memory of their former assistant coach and reached the final of the Second Annual U18 Cat Wheatley Tournament.

Wheatley’s sister Emily also served as an honorary coach — helping the girls with warm-up and cheering from the bench.

“This was very inspirational and truly lifted the spirits of the girls,” continued Harris. “We ran a 50/50

draw to raise money for the Cat Wheatley scholarship fund during the tournament and the support was incredible. It was a very special weekend.”

The team wanted to represent well for Cat and did just that.

The Islanders overcame a very difficult draw to reach the championship game in the 11-team event before falling to a very strong Kelowna Heat side.

They did it with stellar pitching, strong back catching, key defen-

sive infield plays, spectacular outfield catches and explosive hitting, including a couple home runs over the fence.

“Emily handed out the medals during the closing ceremony and it started to hit us that the tournament was over but the memory of Cat will always continue,” added Cooke.

“The girls accomplished a very big task, being one of the host teams, representing the Wheatley family so strongly and coming up big when it counted.”

The Islanders roster includes: Ayden Foort, Capri Horstmann, Ellen Yam, Emily Wooder, Harper Gibson, Jessica Porter, Josie Cooke, Morgan Glover, Riley Yodogawa, Shannelle Gutenberg and Sheetal Reddy, along with callups from the 2002B team — Tayler Chislett-Lefor and Jamie Corbett.

Rounding out the coaching staff are Scott Porter and Tat Ikeda.

t has been a launching pad for many competitive careers including the Kajaks Track and Field Club’s very own head coach.

Garrett Collier was a 10-year-old attending Diefenbaker Elementary when he entered the B.C. Elementary Schools Track and Field Championships for the very first time.

“It’s actually how I got involved with the Kajaks, as well as my mom and dad,” recalled Collier, whose late father Richard would go on to become a legendary throws coach for the club. “I started off as a sprinter but at some some point I got a little bigger and sprinting became farther out of reach so I ended up throwing.”

Collier would become one of the top throwers in the country and earned a scholarship to University of California Berkeley before launching a successful coaching career. Now he oversees the B.C. Elementary Schools meet which has become a major fundraiser and the opportunity to showcase the sport.

The 49th edition takes place May 26-28 at Minoru Park.

“Each year, it’s anywhere between 1,200 and 1,300 participants. We really try to instill that volunteer spirit in our parents, coaches and athletes. We got it down to a science now where we are able to run it pretty smoothly,” Collier continued.

The meet is open to students in Grades 4-7. There is a wide variety of running, throwing and jumping events. New to the schedule this year is a multi-age 4x100 relay. There will also be two special races to

commemorate Richmond’s 150 celebration: a 100-yard dash and a one mile race that will feature some of the top middle distance runners in the country.

“We are going to make it into a showcase where some elite milers will be coming out.

The kids will be able to see some Olympians competing. It will be a great event,” added Collier.

Registration for the championships is ongoing and individual entries are encouraged, along with teams.

There will be a $3 fee to register with B.C. Athletics then kids can enter as many events they want at the cost of $10 per individual event or $15 for a relay team, prior to the May 19 deadline. Late registrations are an additional $5. To register visit www.kajaks.ca/events/the-bcec.
