s far as election coverage goes, I think we’ve outdone ourselves — at least in terms of quantity. But don’t expect any campaign stories in today’s paper.

We typically refrain from writing anything political in the last issue before an election.

The worry is we could get something wrong (not like that’s ever happened) and we won’t be able to correct it prior to people going to the polls.

OK, that may be assuming a slightly inflated sense of our influence, still...

That said, it’s hard to quit cold turkey. So, let me tell you about my crazy, busy week moderating candidate meetings three evenings in a row.

It was great.

There’s much I love about my job, but for an extrovert I spend way too much time holed up in my office.

It was inspiring to be out among people who are invested in the community, who show up, listen to and challenge the candidates in a bid to ensure they make an informed decision.

I also take my hat off to the candidates.

It’s no small thing to put your name forward, knock on doors, shake innumerable hands and be informed on a host of issues — not to mention, take heat for what you or your party has done, or proposes to do.

I realize the majority of eligible voters probably don’t even know who the candidates are in their ridings. Many vote for the party, or perhaps the leader; given our electoral system, I understand why. But that doesn’t excuse anyone from simply opting out. And I don’t just mean opting out of voting, but opting out of taking some degree of responsibility for the community we’re creating.

We’re in this together, as noted by my favourite philosopher, Dr. Seuss. In Horton Hears a Who, a very small shirker fails to do his part, putting all of Whoville in peril.

What I love about Dr. Seuss is he gets that no idea is too big for the smallest of readers.

Speaking of which, yesterday, I received an email about the Student Vote campaign. With 180,000 elementary and secondary students participating, this will be the largest Student Vote campaign the province has ever held.

Every school in Richmond will be involved.

“The Student Vote program ... enables teachers to bring democracy alive in the classroom, and empowers students to experience the voting process firsthand and practise the habits of active and engaged citizenship,” says the press release.

As a mother of teenagers, I know not every kid will be lining up at their pretend polling station eager to cast their vote, but some will.

And, at least, let’s start the practice.

Forming habits of “active and engaged citizenship” is the eating vegetables of our democracy’s health.

DIVIDENDS AND CPP BENEFITS WHY IT MAKES SENSE TO DO SOME PLANNING

Recent articles in the Globe & Mail as well as the Financial Post reveal some anomalies in our financial system. Last week, the Globe reported of two persons, both of whom were entitled to the maximum CPP ($1,114 per month) at age 65.

One retired at 65 and deferred applying for his pension to age 70. The other decided to continue working and he contributed to the CPP until he stopped at age 70 and then applied for his CPP. Under present rules, BOTH receive the same monthly CPP benefit!

On another front, the Financial Post reported in April that some Canadians have managed to retire early and live off only dividend income. If there are no other sources of income, it appears Canadians can receive up to $51,474 in annual dividend income tax free.

That rule suggests such persons should defer their Canada Pension until age 70, to take advantage of the tax free status.

But, in the bigger picture, some good accounting advice is essential, to conclude such plans.

Though the Federal Government changed our CPP last year, this story suggests further work and research on the CPP will be important for us all.

LETTERSto the Editor KPU’s ACCESS programs inaccessible for some

Dear Editor, Richmond KPU (Kwantlen Polytechnic University), like their other campuses in Langley and Surrey, offer some unique ACCESS programs for people with disabilities.

These programs are specially designed to support and prepare individuals in their quest for meaningful employment or volunteer opportunities within their community.

However, I was dismayed to learn that in order for an adult with a disability (18 years and older) to even be accepted into the program, they must be able to use public transit to and from the campus and a possible work site, with no support.

On the KPU website, they describe this expectation for the students with disabilities as follows: “...the ability to navigate community and campus safely and independently...”

The fact that this highly specialized ACCESS program (designed for “...adults with a permanent disability or a combination of learning difficulties that hinder scholastic success...”) screens student applications based on such an unreasonable expectation, strikes me as completely absurd.

For many prospective students, this means that the ACCESS program is, in reality, inaccessible.

Over the past few years, many families of children and adults with disabilities have shared their frustration regarding this criteria with the program’s administration.

It’s been noted that, for some, transit independence is an “end goal” that may hopefully be achieved over time, after lots of practice, and explicit teaching. (Incidentally, transit training is no longer taught in life skills programs at high schools in Richmond).

For other parents, they find that while their child with a disability has the capacity to work, travelling by transit works best when there is someone to accompany them.

While their child may have mastered taking the bus, they have been victimized (wallet stolen, bullied, and/or misunderstood) and have decided that this form of transportation is not a good fit for their child.

Denying people with disabilities access to employment programs because they are not transit independent is unfair and discriminatory. It is a sad irony that the program, whose intent is to include and support and encourage, has inadvertently created a barrier to success.

The reason for this entrance requirement was recently explained to me by KPU Access Program staff as follows.”...if the student was placed at a job experience at an off-site workplace, and the workplace had to unexpectedly close early, then that learner would need to get home on their own. A parent could not be called, because they probably wouldn’t be able to stop work to go and pick them up...”

I was very surprised to hear this rationale, and wondered how many times a workplace has to close suddenly and under what dire circumstances this might happen. Perhaps this was an emergency, in which case, I assume, emergency protocols would take place.

The justification provided by KPU is not only unreasonable but appears discriminatory, as it applies only to people with a disability.

I have polled many people, who admittedly have never really stopped to consider how this expectation for transit independence among a vulnerable population is discriminatory, but after some reflection, they have agreed that this is not acceptable and this can be viewed in the context of a human rights violation.

If democracy is in play, the councillors will take one of two approaches.

They may vote based on the wishes of the majority of Richmond residents. Or, they may vote on what they judge to be in the best interests of the community.

Either way, the vote would support effective restrictions (without loopholes) in order to maximize the preservation of farmland. We know from a planning committee survey and from council meetings that most people in Richmond want sensible

restrictions on the size of homes, as elsewhere in the Lower Mainland. And we know that the best interests of the community require rich farmland to be preserved for food security.

Of course, councillors may reject democracy and vote in favor of the special interests of landowner investors, speculators, and developers. Dollar signs and naked self-interest may cloud their judgement.

Here’s hoping that democracy wins out.

Richmond Night Market Traffic Advisory Weekends from May 12 to October 29, 2017

During the summer operation of the Richmond Night Market, located at 8351 River Road (directly west of River Rock Casino Resort), traffic on No. 3 Road may be heavier than normal. Evening travel delays may occur in the area.

his weekend, at Garry Point Park, just beneath the Japanese tall ship Kaiwo Maru, you may spot a little rescue boat — that of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue.

And that’s because Station 10 leader Aaron Harnden and his rescue crew are posted on the dock to remind visitors of how to be safe around the water — especially along the fast-moving, unforgiving Fraser River, which claims a number of lives annually.

RCMSAR has teamed up with Mustang Survival and is loaning children lifejackets at the tall ship event, as they enter the dock and climb aboard the ship.

“Families are encouraged to bring their own (lifejackets) down to the docks of the Kaiwo Maru, to keep everyone safe. As well, our vessel, the BR Hastings, will be available for viewing dockside during the Kaiwo Maru Canada 150 weekend,” said Harnden.

As many Richmond residents head down to the river’s shore Harnden is hoping to keep those memories fresh as the summer lake swimming and river boating season approaches.

Another big event on May 20, dubbed

Ready, Set, Wear It!, will raise more awareness as the crew will be joined by safe-boating partners from around the Fraser River to help break a world record in simultaneous lifejacket inflation and wearing.

Representatives from the City of Richmond, and other local organizations will don and inflate lifejackets to raise awareness of boating safety and the importance of wearing lifejackets when on and around the water.

Ready, Set, Wear it! is part of international Lifejacket World Record Day. The public is invited to join the event, and photo bomb it while wearing their own lifejackets.

“Lifejackets save lives, and we’re pleased to be holding this awareness event in Richmond for the first time. Lifejackets today are hightech, comfortable, and stylish, and there’s no reason not to wear them when you’re in a boat or on the dock. We’re especially concerned that children wear lifejackets at all times when around the water,” stated Harnden.

The Ready, Set, Wear It! photo bomb event (May 20, Garry Point Park, at 10:30 a.m.) will take place during national Safe Boating Awareness Week May 20-26.

Furthermore, RCMSAR has recently installed a lifejacket loan station at the No. 2 Road boat launch and is planning to install two other lifejacket stations in the near future, said Harnden.

ichmond’s sewer system has taken a beating over the years, with troublesome grease from home kitchens clogging and jamming pipes that lead to Richmond’s two water treatment plants.

But equally problematic are the “unflushables,” items that do not disintegrate in water and clog the drains.

And so, Metro Vancouver’s regional government, which oversees sewage treatment, is beginning a public campaign to draw awareness to the problem, which costs Metro Vancouver about $100,000 each year.

cNair secondary school’s senior marketing students pinned down one of their school’s “hipster” teachers, Sean Corcoran, and buzzed his head for cancer research Tuesday afternoon.

The stunt was part of a fundraising event planned by their marketing teacher Randy Sangha, who explained students were able to apply their classroom skills to a more real-life setting.

“Marketing and business is generally about making a profit, but I also feel that it’s important to give back, and this is one way the class at McNair does so,” said Sangha.

This was the third year in a row the students have organized an event to raise

money for the Canadian Cancer Society.

In total, they’ve raised about $3,000, said Sangha.

“Cancer is something that touches us all.

It’s good to give back to the community,” he said.

Aside from a good life lesson, students learn about aspects of non-profit groups, event planning and presentation skills.

A bit of hype and hoopla accompanied the head shave, as about 200 students packed the school foyer to watch barber Mo Raoof, from Alen’s Golden Scissors in Steveston, buzz Corcoran. Last year, principal Jason Leslie took to the chair for the cause.

Rebate offered for efficient washers

f you’re in the market for a new washer, now’s the time to purchase as the City of Richmond is, again, offering an incentive to homeowners to replace their old, water effecient washer.

In a joint initiative with BC Hydro, residents can receive a rebate of $100 or $200 by switching to a qualifying new, high efficiency ENERGY STAR® model, Clothes washers are one of the highest water consumers, second only to toilets, in a typical home. They use approximately 13 per cent of indoor household water. Switching to a high-efficiency clothes washer can save up to 64,000 litres of water and 256 kWh of electricity per year.

From now until June 15, those eligible for a City/Hydro rebate must order, purchase (either paid in full or with the first portion paid) and install a pre-qualified clothes washer within a home located in Richmond (lifetime maximum of one rebate per dwelling). Qualifying ENERGY STAR® clothes washers can be found online at PowerSmart.ca/Appliances.

A completed rebate application must be submitted to BC Hydro, along with a photocopy of purchase invoices/receipts within 60 days from the purchase date. BC Hydro will issue a cheque for the total rebate amount of $100 or $200, depending on the energy and water consumption rates of the new clothes washer.

Old clothes washers must be taken out of circulation and disposed of appropriately. Instead of disposing old clothes washers at the land fill, they can be recycled at the Richmond Recycling Depot located at 5555 Lynas Lane. Alternatively, residents who receive Blue Box collection may use the Large Item Pick-up Program, which provides curb side collection service for up to four large household items per year. M

ost people — including patients and healthcare providers — may think of healthcare as what doctors, nurses and other allied health professionals do for you.

Although it is our role to partner with you, giving you the support, knowledge and resources to make informed decisions and achieve your personal health goals, I believe the bulk of your healthcare is self-care: what you do for yourself — when we’re not watching.

The four foundations of healthy self-care are (1) healthy eating (or consumption) — what you put into your body, including alcohol, drugs and tobacco; (2) healthy physical activity, (3) emotional wellbeing and (4) healthy relationships. Think of your self-care as what you eat, what you do, how you feel and how you relate.

Regular physical activity is so essential to health that doctors will be walking the talk during the week of May 10 — the World Health Organization’s Move for Health Day. The Doctors of BC is supporting doctors for the annual Walk With Your Doc events in communities across the province. Physicians are volunteering their time to walk and talk with their patients and other members of the community of any age.

The message is simple: physical activity is important to your health, and walking is one form of activity that most of us can do.

Over recent years, more doctors are literally writing prescriptions for exercise, and there’s

even a global organization called Exercise is Medicine. A typical dose is 30 minutes of moderate exercise (such as walking) in single or divided doses five days a week. Of course, every prescription has to be tailored to individual preferences and conditions.

The key message is that regular exercise can be as potent as pills in preventing disease, maintaining your health, managing chronic conditions and extending your life.

But some of my patients would rather pop a pill than start exercise to lower their blood pressures.

Yet you don’t have to wear running tights, cycling shorts or a swimsuit, and you don’t have to go to the gym. The variety and range of healthy physical activity is broader than formal exercise alone.

To many, exercise is a dirty word. They associate it with work, pain and the school gym classes of their childhoods.

You can reap the benefits of physical activity doing many of your regular household chores: mowing the lawn, doing the laundry, gardening, raking, mopping, sweeping and vacuuming.

All these activities get your feet moving and use big muscle groups. Watch out for marathon sessions of chores. Mowing the long grass for the first time in the spring, raking and composting can be a grueling triathlon.

To avoid injuries warm up, stretch and pace yourself. Break up big jobs into smaller ones.

Take breaks and stay well hydrated.

Walk whenever you can — up and down the stairs, around the block, to visit your neighbours, to run errands and get to the park. Dance to your favourite music.

Festival fun ahead on both land and water

T

here’s plenty to do, on both land and water, starting Friday during the Ships to Shore King of the Sea festival in Steveston.

For music lovers, there’s free, headline concerts by Alan Doyle and the Beautiful Gypsies (Saturday) and Dear Rouge (Friday), plus other live music and performances throughout the day Friday to Sunday.

A collection of 10 carnival rides, including a Ferris wheel will provide an aerial view of the 361-foot-long,Kaiwo Maru, which is docked at Garry Point Park.

A maritime-themed Kids Cove children’s area will feature live entrainment and hand’s-on activities. Plus, roving performers, including a special appearance by Dora the Explorer and Diego, will entertain. And if you’re hungry, there will be food trucks to cater to all tastes.

And there is a fireworks display Saturday night at Garry Point Park.

But the centrepiece of the three-day festival is the Kaiwo Maru. And one of the don’t-miss highlights of the Japanese tallship’s visit to Richmond is the ceremonial sale drill, which will be held Saturday from 2 - 3:30 p.m.

That’s when the 200-person crew aboard

the “King of the Sea” will climb high into the ship’s four masts, that top out at over 180-feet high, then carefully inch out onto the thin wooden spars of each mast to unfurl nearly 30,000-square-metres of sail, with ceremonial flair.

Free public boarding of the Kaiwo Maru will be offered during the Ships to Shore King of the Sea Festival on Friday and Saturday.

Advance passes are already fully booked. A limited number of boarding passes will be available on site for Friday and Saturday on a first-come-first served basis starting at 8:45 a.m. from the ship information tent.

Boarding passes will be limited to six per household. A standby line will also be available. As an alternative to boarding the ship, dockside and other viewing opportunities are available.

You can also enter a contest for a trip to Japan.

Ships to Shore King of the Sea runs Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

hen Alan Doyle said he is looking forward to coming out to Richmond to perform as the musical headliner at the Ships to Shore King of the Sea — a free, family festival in Steveston — on Saturday evening, there’s an undeniably authentic air to his tone over the telephone.

“I love being by the water,” said Doyle, frontman for Newfoundland’s Great Big Sea who is bringing his own band (Alan Doyle and The Beautiful Gypsies) to the main stage at Garry Point Park. “It’s really my favourite thing because I get lost in landlocked places since I grew up on the ocean.

How Mother’s Day began T

he tradition of Mother’s Day in North America dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honour her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia.

Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning.

As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even try-

ing to have it removed from the calendar.

Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

f the recent run of dreary weather this spring has failed to tell you that summer is on the way, the calendar sure will.

It’s early May and time when parents start to come to grips with planning what their children will do to enjoy the warm, school-free days ahead.

One of the local organizations getting plenty of enquiries about that at this time of year is Richmond Youth Service Agency (RYSA), which runs a pair of camps through the summer months at Blundell and Cook elementary schools called the Connections Kids Club.

Together, they provide a costeffective and true, mostly Richmondbased, experience for youngsters from K to Grade 7, said Jane Reed, RYSA’s coordinator of youth programs.

“I’ve had a big bunch of calls already,” said Reed, adding there are just 24 spaces available at Cook and 20 at Blundell, so parents need to decide soon because spots tend to fill up quickly.

or the second straight summer, NBA stars are hosting basketball camps at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

Last August, the Oval and the Richmondbased DRIVE Academy welcomed Zach LaVine — the 22-year-old Renton, WA native who recently wrapped up his third season with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The twotime NBA Slam Dunk champion hosted a one day, three-hour camp, which quickly sold out.

LaVine has announced he will be returning to Richmond this summer and an exact date is expected to be finalized soon.

Meanwhile, the Kelly Olynyk NBA Skills Clinic will be coming to the Oval for the first time in July.

The former B.C. high school basketball star and Boston Celtics member will be hosting a two-day session on July 29-30. He will joined

by Danny Green of the San Antonio Spurs.

Olynyk moved from Toronto to Kamloops when he was in Grade 7 and enjoyed an outstanding high school career with South Kamloops — leading the Titans to a third place finish at provincials in his Grade 12 year.

The seven-footer received a scholarship to Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA where he earned First Team All-American honours in his junior season. He was drafted 13th overall by the Dallas Mavericks then imme-

diately traded to the Celtics where he has played the past four seasons.

The 26-year-old is currently averaging nine points as the Celtics own a 2-0 series lead over Washington in the second round of the NBA playoffs.

Green is in his eighth NBA season, including the past seven with San Antonio. The former University of North Carolina star is averaging seven points per game. The Spurs are also still involved in the NBA playoffs, taking on the Houston Rockets.

Throughout the two-day clinic, Olynyk and Green, along with the rest of the coaching staff, will place campers in small groups.

They will be put through a number of drills focused on improving their basketball skills level in ball-handling, shooting, passing and defence.

The camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is open to boys and girls ages eight to 17. The cost is $199 (US) and includes a Nike Kelly Olynyk T-shirt, a camp photo with Olynyk and Green, along with an autographed item. A

mother-daughter pair of authors will be in Richmond Saturday for a book signing session that carries with it a special, combined purpose.

In her book The Autistic Author and the Animator, Vancouver mom Janet Walmsley has written about her daughter’s – 23-yearold Jenny Story – journey through autism that has required commitment and courage. And Story’s book, Dysomia, a fantasy fiction novel about a young woman out to prove herself, serves as a triumph of that battle with autism and is the first installment in a trilogy for the young writer and animator.

Separately, the stories may not be connected, but together they intertwine to provide an overview of one family’s experience and determination to overcome.

“My first commitment was to my daughter and always thinking positively and full speed ahead, never looking back or listening to a doctor saying, she will never talk, never do well in school, never be where her peers are, as each year goes by,” said Walmsley when asked what motivated her to write the book.

“I promised Jenny that would never happen. And I wanted to share that commitment with other autistic children and parents.”

She added that too many families have slipped through the cracks in the health system, believing there is no hope for an autistic child.

“In shining a positive light on Jenny’s life journey, I could show that one with autism can lead a good life and push through barriers and obstacles and live their dreams and attain

their goals,” Walmsley said.

“Autism is not a death sentence, but a rich, fulfilled life sentence, so to speak. I promised to shed the stigma that still surrounds autism and enlighten people that autistic individuals are a huge asset in both the work force and society.”

She said her daughter is living proof of that and her successes can provide inspiration for them.

Story was diagnosed with low-functioning autism at the age of three. She graduated from high school in Vernon, BC with honours and enrolled at Vancouver Film School for Animation where she became a 2D classical and 3D digital character design animator. She recently finished working on a film for Super Channel with her animation and another one is in the works.

The road to Story’s productive and successful life today came with some significant challenges, said Walmsley.

First of all, Story’s diagnosis took a toll on Walmsley’s marriage and her spouse left the relationship.

“I saw Jenny go through bullying in school, awkwardness with socialization and she worked extra hard with her studies, too,” Walmsley said. “I watched this girl truck through the trenches, climb up the mountainside, reach the peak and then jump up on the clouds and fly high above them.

“So many people say that she has so many triumphs — which she richly deserves. And she wants other autistic individuals to have this, too.”

When Walmsley decided to write about her experience with her daughter, Story was fearful, at first. But if it resulted in helping one family or even an individual, the exercise would have been worthwhile, Walmsley said.

two books were published at the same time. Walmsley said the stories needed to be presented alongside each other.

“When people see Jenny and I together and I talk about her story and then there she is beside me, with her best-selling fantasy fiction book, talking to people about it and being a professional 2D and 3D animator, as well, they are in happy tears and blown away,”

Walmsley said. “We have people saying it has changed their lives.”

he sixth annual Safety and Secure Living Fair will be held this Saturday from noon to 4:30 p.m. at Aberdeen Centre.

‘Big dreams’ fuel bevy of businesses PHILIPRAPHAEL

A Richmond-based company plans to start construction this summer on an $85-million plant in Entwistle, Alberta – about 100 km west of Edmonton - that will produce wood pellets as a greener form of fuel. Pinnacle Renewable Energy Inc. intends to build the facility near the CN Rail line outside Entwistle. It will be the first plant the firm has put up in Alberta and is expected to employ about 70 people when it starts operating next spring. The highheat, low-ash pellets are typically burned for home, institutional or industrial heating; used for animal bedding; or turned into fuel for electricity generation — one of Pinnacle’s biggest clients is Britain’s largest single-site coal power plant, which brings them in to cut its greenhouse gas emissions. The pellets are made from compressed wood waste often treated as garbage.

“It’s the first organic program in Canada and I got my certificate last year,” Shang said, adding he intends to have a total of six hives, which will also provide blueberry honey that will be sold through the winery.

While it’s yet another business under his care, Shang said his motivation to keep bees came primarily from his interest in helping support the population of pollinators, which is under threat.

“I learned about pollinators and their decline through my landscaping business and thought that since I had the blueberry-growing property, I should try and do something to help the environment,” he said. “And next year, when I have some experience with beekeeping, I can maybe rent them out to help people pollinate their plants.”

A property adjacent to the winery site will also house Shang’s venture into teaching horticulture, which will be delivered in Mandarin.

“We will have room for about 10 to 15 people who are interested in landscaping and gardening. I am also creating some core programs, such as turf management, blueberry farming, bee-keeping and landscaping solutions,” Shang said, adding he’s keen to help others get into the landscaping business.

“We have so much opportunity here. There’s enough for people to share.”

So, where does Shang’s drive come from overseeing so many endeavours?

“I have big dreams, ever since I was young,” he said. “For example, I don’t want to be a landscaper for my entire life. It’s just one part. I also want to share my knowledge — teach people the right way to do things — and help protect the environment.”

Air Canada announced this week the introduction of a seasonal, four-times weekly service between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Melbourne Airport (MEL), marking the first ever direct, non-stop flight from Canada to this Australian city. The YVR-MEL route will be operated on an Air Canada Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft with seat capacity for 298 passengers, and will run from Dec. 1 to Feb. 4, 2018.

“This is another exciting first for YVR – direct service to Melbourne! With almost zero knowledge in plants and the landscaping trade, Shang went to night school in Vancouver where he studied horticulture.

Nearly 12 years later, after building up his business and landscaping clientele, Shang is studying how to make blueberry wine.

With the assistance of an investor/friend in China, the winery was established on 10 acres of land that belonged to Bob Fisher, a longtime Richmond blueberry grower. A portion of the property fronting No. 6 Road will house the 6,000-square-foot winery, while the remainder is dedicated to growing organic blueberries, which will be turned into wine.

The majority will be exported to China where it is a much sought after product because of its high antioxidant properties.

“Richmond’s soils are perfect for blueberry growing and we have a market already established in China,” Shang said, adding that plans are to open for business this summer and the first bottles exported in winter.

Cost so far to set up the operation has been $2 million for the winery building and equipment, plus $3.5 million for the land, which was bought two years ago.

Air Canada to fly direct 'down under'

f you ever wanted to credit someone for coming up with the old saying, “there’s not enough hours in the day,” you may want to bestow the responsibility on Frank Shang.

That’s because the 37-year-old entrepreneur has managed to build his love of plants and trees into a thriving landscaping business and now he is busy setting up a Richmondbased winery, bee-keeping business and a horticulture club.

The multiple ventures has helped earn the native of Harbin, China a spot as a finalist in RBC’s Top-25 Canadian Immigrant Awards.

“I work all day managing the landscaping business and now the winery and bees. And when I get home, it’s time for family. But when they go to sleep, that’s when I start my other job and that’s studying up on my winery operation course,” Shang told the News during a visit to Sun Way Winery which is in the midst of construction on a southern portion of No. 6 Road.

It’s not been an overnight success for Shang, who came to Canada in 2001 with his family and later started MRD Landscaping Inc., a business that earned him the Richmond Chamber of Commerce’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2016.

A business student in China, he toiled at a number of labouring jobs in the Lower Mainland where he learned to operate heavy machinery and forklifts before joining a landscaping firm that presented him with an opportunity to start his own operation in 2006.

“I come from northeastern China where it’s very cold and not many plants — Harbin is near Russia,” Shang said with a laugh. “And when I came to Vancouver, I saw trees and all kinds of plants everywhere and thought this would be a good place for a landscaping business.”

he U13 Air Attack Black girls’ volleyball team capped a terrific season with a bronze medal performance at the U13 Provincial Club Championships in Abbotsford.

The Richmond-based club earned a spot on the podium by rallying for a three-set victory (18-25, 25-16, 15-8) over Abbotsford’s Elevate-Ward to conclude a thrilling weekend. The girls were coming off a gusty semi-final loss to the Ducks Bill and head coach Kristy Alblas wondered how much gas her team had left in the tank after dropping the opening set.

“We gave all our energy into the Ducks match previously. The girls had long and late nights of play and I was afraid we were just tired,” said the former Air Attack and Cambie standout. “The girls turned it around and were able to win the second set quite easily. Once the third set started, the girls knew they were going to win. They put in every effort they had. You could see it in everyone’s eyes.

“As soon as we had won the match, the girls ran onto the court and cheered loudly. Third place!

They were so excited.”

The journey to Abbotsford started with twice weekly practices and regular scrimmages a third night with Air Attack’s U13 Gold team — guided by Tanya Kippan.

The Blacks entered five tournaments and enjoyed success each time — finishing first or second in their pools.

It was then off to the Lower Mainland Regional Championships where the girls continued to roll and took home top honours.

“We were coming together and playing as a team which is quite unique for this age level,” continued Alblas. “The week before provincials, we played in another tournament and a few people commented on how well the team was able to move to the ball and communicate with each other. That’s always nice

Air Attack Black headed to Abbotsford with plenty of momentum but dropped a tough three-set decision to BCO Black to open pool play. They rebounded to win the rest of the games and finished second in their group. That set the stage for a key playoff win over Thunder White (25-19, 25-16) to advance to the quarter-finals.

The locals would produce another three set victory — this time rallying to get past the RMVC Royals (1325, 27-25, 15-10). The comeback thriller earned a semi-final encounter with the Ducks — the tournament’s No. 1 seed. Air Attack put up a terrific battle, losing a pair of close games (22-25, 23-25).

“Usually after a tough match in the semis teams would be upset for the loss. Not this team,” said Alblas.

“They were excited and so proud of themselves and for good reason.

They played better than I have ever seen them play. The other team was strong, hit hard, and had a fast paced game. Our girls were able to keep up and fight back stronger than we ever have. It was a close match and you can’t be upset for playing the best you ever had. It was just amazing volleyball.”

Following the bronze medal victory, team captain Elizabeth Lee was named Air Attack’s Most Inspirational Player.

It’s very bright future for her and the rest of the team.

Great run for Richmond F.C. ends with overtime loss Mark Booth

memorable 12-month journey concluded in heartbreak for Richmond F.C. The premier women’s soccer team saw its bid to repeat as Provincial “A” Cup champions end with a 2-1 quarter-final overtime loss to Surrey United last Sunday in Cloverdale.

The entertaining match was a battle of Metro Women’s Soccer League heavyweights with Surrey losing just once in the regular season (13-0-1), while Richmond posted a 10-2-2 record.

The hosts took a 1-0 lead into the second half when Richmond elevated its game and dominated much of the next 45 minutes.

Oregon State Unversity grad Jenna Richardson notched the equalizer when she neatly curled a shot inside the near post from about 17-yards out.

The visitors had chances to take the lead but the rivals headed to 30 minutes of extra time.

Surrey regrouped after the break and took advantage of a defensive breakdown to take the lead. Richmond’s chance to answer back suffered a blow when Jaclyn Dunnett was issued a direct red card for a dangerous kick. Still, the girls generated three excel-

LOST STUIVER, Hendrik Bernard Henk’s journey began in Lonneker, the Netherlands, on March 30, 1931. It took him to Australia and later to his preferred country, Canada where he and his late wife, Janet, raised their family on the West Coast. There, while working for Pony Express he continued his education, which led him to work for 23 years as a computer programmer for BC Packers until they closed. Retirement was not fulfilling; he found employment with Adesa, where he not only had great enjoyment in his work, but also created a special bond with the people with whom he worked. Henk will be remembered for his humour, his curiosity, his resourcefulness, his love of teaching, his search for harmony and peace, and his willingness to be helpful, caring and kind to those around him. He dealt with his cancer directly and lived throughout with optimistic peace.

He will be missed by his wife Rosa, his children, siblings, nieces and nephews in the Netherlands, Rosa’s siblings and spouses with their families, as well as supportive and kind friends and neighbours.

His journey ended on April 28, 2017. Appreciation and thankfulness to all who enriched his life.

Service to be held on Saturday, May 6th, at noon, at First Lutheran Church, 5745 Wales Street, Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice, or consider doing a random act of kindness.
