I

n just over a week, many of us will be heading to the polls to vote in the provincial election — but almost as many of us won’t be.

In the last provincial election, voter turnout in B.C. was about 52 per cent, and even lower in Richmond.

We’re bombarded with messages to vote.

The notion of mandatory voting has even been bandied about. But I think a better solution lies in wait; one that the voting public may need time to digest.

I’m talking about a “declined vote” option, or a vote for “none of the above.”

This measure has been accepted — in some form — in other parts of Canada, and the world, and is essential to the draconian mandatory voting proposal. Democracy Watch argues, in the absence of a declined vote option, mandatory voting is a violation of a person’s right to refuse endorsing a candidate.

As it stands, we’re led to believe eligible voters who don’t vote, don’t care.

I disagree. Nearly all of us care about politics in one form or another. It’s simply expressed differently. For many who do not vote, they aren’t able to express themselves effectively in the present system. They may not like their options or may feel that the system is such that regardless of who gets in, nothing would really change.

By declining your vote, you’re saying, “I am an engaged citizen; I just don’t accept these choices.”

I contend a declined vote option can better gauge what portion of non-voters is dissatisfied or simply apathetic. Perhaps a write-in reason could further inform us.

Last election, only about one in five eligible voters chose Teresa Wat. Hers was the lowest riding for voter turnout in B.C. (43 per cent).

Immigration patterns may have played a role here, which is important to note; declined voting only really comes into play when you can rest assured citizens are aware of the electoral process.

Declined voting will not, and should not, alter election outcomes. It’s merely an indicator that can help delegitimize propagandistic claims of minority-elected officials.

In Manitoba, a voter can write “I decline” on a ballot. In 2016, about 4,000 voters (or one per cent of voters) did so, up from 440 in 2011. Here in B.C. there is no such option.

In Nevada, the “none of these candidates” has a designated tick box (much better).

The U.S. presidential declined vote soared from 5,770 votes (0.57 per cent) in 2012 to 28,863 (2.56 per cent) in 2016.

The numbers are still low, but probably because the option isn’t well known; after all, no one’s curb-side with “None of the Above” signs — although one Ontario candidate recently registered with the name “ZNone of the Above” to protest Ontario’s lack of declined vote option!

Dear Editor, I penned this letter in my head while waiting to get through the Massey Tunnel yesterday. I was, once again, going the wrong direction at rush hour. This time it was a short wait — only 45 minutes.

On Friday afternoons, sometimes it’s taken me 80-90 minutes to clear the tunnel.

That’s time stolen from me that I could have spent with my three, young children!

This tunnel is such an inadequate, outdated and irrelevant solution to our 21st century traffic problem. To think that the needs of thousands of people can be accommodated by a tunnel designed and built in the 1950’s is ludicrous. With 30 per cent of tunnel traffic either starting or ending in Richmond, why aren’t Richmond residents more vocal in their support for a bridge?

between these issues and the bridge plan, there is plenty of available information that clearly demonstrates the connection. Larger vessels and a deeper (sustainable) dredged channel are certainly part of the planning between involved parties.

This will adversely affect the estuary and affordable, useable farmland.

The region’s population will grow by about one million people by 2040 and transportation improvements, including public transit, are needed to meet the challenges. It’s important to note, that neither the Metro Vancouver Regional Growth Strategy nor the Mayor’s Council support this bridge plan because it’s inconsistent with the regional growth strategies that have been carefully developed.

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, the plan for a freeway through Vancouver was contentious and, eventually, it was shelved and the freeway was stopped. There wasn’t unanimity at the time and only through a historical lens can that decision be confirmed as visionary. The George Massey Tunnel replacement is another watershed moment. It is not too late for reconsideration and to change plans.

Courage and changing your mind are not mutually exclusive. It’s immensely reasonable to question whether we require a $4.5 billion, 3,000 metre bridge to cross the 200 metre wide Fraser River. It is not too late, for the government of B.C. to demonstrate leadership by listening and reconsidering options. It is fair to ask if this is a bridge too much?

Inability to feed ourselves a self-fulfilling prophecy Dear Editor, Earlier this week, Richmond City Council voted in favour of home sizes that are more than double the maximum size recommended by the Agricultural Land Commission and more than triple the size of permitted in Richmond’s urban areas.

The ALC states that residential homes on ALR lands should not exceed the sizing of homes on adjacent urban areas in order to limit speculation, preserve farmland, and keep farmland “affordable.”

By not following ALC recommendations for bylaws means that Richmond council is creating its own rules and blatantly defying the ALC’s premise and purpose. It means that council is not only creating a draw for investors to buy up ALR lands, but it is, indeed, creating an unequal society with unequal rules. Councillors are creating even more hostility in our city as they pit urban vs. rural (or

those living on ALR lands), culture against culture, and creating a twotiered system where money talks.

Is this surprising? No. But does this go against the ALC? Does it go against official community plans? Does it fly in the face of sustainability? Yes. As the Port of Vancouver assures us that we can’t feed ourselves and must ship food from China, as the government takes more land out of production with a massive bridge and as we let speculators buy up precious ALR lands and build monster homes, no, we won’t be able to feed ourselves.

Sustainability in Richmond is becoming a joke, where money talks every time. Even more disappointing is a provincial government that doesn’t actually work to preserve farmland and our shared future.

Just the facts, please Dear Editor, During this election campaign, the political advertising is slick.

I decided long ago that I should base decisions on facts, not cartoon ads or demonic pachyderms.

I recently have joined the ranks of the disabled, we all do eventually. Due to recent surgery, I have had to rely on the healthcare system and HandyDART. It was essential for me to look at how each party focused on the lives of seniors and disabled people.

Having done so, I made some interesting observations.

Whereas in their party platform documents, each major party promises some form of improve-

ment in health care, only the NDP mentions HandyDART. The Liberal platform focused much interest in the sale of alcohol, mentioning wine and beer more than six times. Uber and ride sharing also warranted a major section in the Liberal document where HandyDART is left in the cold.

If elected, Liberals who supported a nine-year freeze in funding for HandyDART will be happily taking Uber to their wine and cheese parties while the growing seniors and disabled communities will be homebound.

t came as no surprise that conflicting opinions and questionable claims regarding the George Massey Tunnel replacement bridge peppered a debate among Richmond’s provincial election candidates Wednesday evening at Gateway Theatre.

Non-Liberal candidates took the incumbents to task on the planned $3.5 billion, 10-lane bridge.

“This bridge has nothing to do with transit and everything to do with LNG and coal ships,” said Aman Singh of the NDP, in reply to his Richmond-Queensborough counterpart, LNG lobbyist and Liberal Jas Johal, who said the bridge will benefit a growing population and the economy.

deeper dredging will facilitate industrialization of the river, he noted.

Richmond’s South Centre candidates then kicked off as Liberal Linda Reid, B.C.’s longest-serving MLA, gestured to the audience that the government has a business case for the bridge “this high.”

NDP counterpart, and popular city councillor Chak Au weighed in, scoffing, at the fact the business case was presented years after a decision was made, following a widelycriticized public consultation process.

When Reid said the seismically unsafe Richmond Hospital now has a business plan and then pledged to have a new acute care tower under construction before the next election, Au said the Liberals displayed “neg-

ligence” in delaying it for so long.

Again, he turned to the bridge.

“When the government wants to do something they don’t need a business plan. The bridge is an example,” said Au, who promised a faster track for the hospital tower.

The Liberals made several attempts to argue the bridge is safer than proposals to keep the existing tunnel and/or twin it.

Arguments ensued on where one would rather be situated during a major earthquake — on the bridge or in a tunnel.

NDP candidate Kelly Greene suggested a bridge is unsafe on soft soils. Liberal Teresa Wat countered, no tunnels are built in earthquake zones.

From page 6 Non-Liberal candidates pointed out that in 2009, the Liberals’ former Minister of Transportation declared, that retrofitting the Massey Tunnel would safely expand its life by 50 years. And, any new tunnel can easily be engineered, as noted in government reports.

On Tuesday, however, Reid said a new tunnel “likely” wouldn’t pass an environmental assessment, later stating it would be invasive on the riverbed.

To explain why the Liberals have expedited the bridge project, but have stalled on upgrading the Richmond Hospital, Wolfe quipped: “Hospital patients don’t donate to the BC Liberals,” alluding to port-related corporate donors.

When asked about controversial campaign donations, only the Liberals said they would not commit to banning corporate and union donations.

Reid also noted there are limits on local campaign spending.

Opposition parties have argued that generous donations from the real estate industry to the BC Liberals explain why the government has allowed speculation, and the resulting affordable housing crisis, to grow.

Greene said, her NDP party would close loopholes to reduce speculation, which she says has led to an “erosion of neighbourhoods.”

Meanwhile, Wat made clear her continued pledge, as Minister of International Trade, to continue to diversify B.C.’s trading partners in the era of President Trump tariff wars.

She was asked to rationalize how her government failed on its promise to deliver a booming LNG industry.

She said markets go up and down and B.C. should still be prepared to go to market when prices rise.

Greene repeated a popular NDP slogan, calling the LNG

prosperity fund a “fantasy fund.” Her party intends to spend this $500 million piggy bank on social programs, in addition to raising corporate taxes and highincome taxes.

Liberal John Yap pounced on Greene’s party, calling it out for not being up front about how it intends to eliminate MSP fees, as stated.

“They’re going to raise your taxes,” said Yap. While NDP candidates avoided specific costing, Greene pointed to higher fees for MSP, ICBC and BC Hydro, which she said effectively act as taxes.

Johal noted that the government has had five straight balanced operating budgets.

However, Green Roy Sakata mocked the notion, stating Crown corporations, buoyed by rising (regressive) user fees, provide dividends to the government’s bottom line, allowing it to balance said budgets.

The 2017 Lulu Award in the category of Public and Institutional Building urban design goes to Quintet — City Centre Community Centre and Trinity Western University, developed by UEM Sunrise (Canada) Development Ltd., designed by W.T. Leung Architects Inc. and landscape designed by

Durante Kreuk Ltd. The four-storey building accommodates community centre and university space and is part of a larger highrise residential and commercial mixed-use project. The design integrates the interior spaces with the street and the vertical visual connection with upper level open space.

The 2017 Lulu Award in the category of Public and Institutional Open Space urban design is awarded to Terra Nova Play Experience. Designed by Hapa Collaborative and Lynne Werker Architect, the play equipment is unique; individual elements interact with their context. The design showcases the agricultural past in the city and allows kids to connect to nature in the city.

“The fact is, in 2014, they promised there would be a rebuilding of Gilmore school. What happened? Nothing. This is a government of denial and arrogance,” said Au. Liberal John Yap pledged a capital works project office to fast-track 24 school upgrades.

And, “we’re looking forward to restoration of class sizes,” said Yap, citing a Supreme Court of Canada ruling, which concluded the government had underfunded schools for 15 years, via unconstitutional legislation.

Food banks were also discussed.

One question noted there has been a 33 per cent increase in the use of food banks since 2008. Candidates were asked what they would do to reduce reliance on food banks.

Green candidate Michael Wolfe said the region needs to move toward sustainable, local agriculture.

Liberal Linda Reid agreed. She said food banks can benefit from local growers, citing community farms along No. 5 Road backlands.

Reid and Johal noted the government had recently spent $10 million in new funding for food banks, to help with refrigeration costs.

Many point to the fact welfare rates have been frozen for 10 years.

Johal said a strong economy is needed to increase social spending.

The Liberals “don’t have any problem spending billions of dollars on a bridge. They can find that easy, but they can’t find money for HandyDART,” noted Richmond-Steveston BC NDP candidate Kelly Greene Liberal Jas Johal countered, stating the bridge will provide economic benefits by moving goods and people. In turn, the government will be better positioned to provide more social services.

This was a theme repeated throughout the evening: Whereas Teresa Wat repeated that her government is focused on the economy, including getting disabled people jobs, the NDP and Greens were quick to point out just how much social service spending had waned under the BC Liberals.

One question noted, despite a recent raise in disability assistance rates there has only been “a net increase of $78 for (people with disabilities) in over a decade and no increase specifically in the shelter portion of $375.”

Wat replied, “We want to help people on disability, so they can get a good paying job.”

The NDP has pledged to increase the rate by another $100 — still short of the minimum $1,200 being asked for by advocacy groups.

Another commonly-cited theme emerged: Charges that the BC Liberals are only increasing social spending in the run-up to an election and the increases only counter what has been taken away or not provided for, to begin with.

Such was the argument by the NDP’s Chak Au on school funding and seismic upgrades for schools.

he Sharing Farm is celebrating successfully growing 500 lbs. of greens in the middle of the worst winter for years.

This is thanks to the generous support of Vancity, who funded the purchase of a brand new 70-foot greenhouse last year.

It was quite an amazing experience, when the snow lay thickly on the ground, to be able to come into the greenhouse and harvest fresh kale, arugula, ruby streaks and mustard greens.

A big part of the success was due to raising the beds by building up the soil inside by one to two feet. During the winter most of our land is completely saturated and greens couldn’t grow in such conditions, as their roots would drown.

Knowing this we built our beds high and the greens were safe and sound in their elevated position.

The cold was not a problem. The solar gain was enough to keep the inside temperature at a reasonable level without additional heating and although there was some wilting when the door was accidently left open during the first snowfall (rookie error from the new ED, ahem!) the greens resurged remarkably once the nasty breezes were cut out.

The cold also had the added benefit of killing off the aphid population!

The icy blast also made the kale sweeter; almost reminiscent of fresh peas.

Some members of the cabbage family, particularly kale and brussels sprouts, produce sugars as a reaction to the frost, which we can confirm is absolutely delicious!

The greenhouse can now be used every year to grow winter greens and can also be used in the summer to grow tomatoes, sweet peppers, eggplants and more.

We are so grateful to Vancity for giving us the opportunity to expand our produc-

tion and donate even more to our neighbours in need.

We’d also like to thank Lafarge, who donated the concrete for the footings. It’s wonderful to see local companies come together to build something great for the whole community.

In the first volunteer session of the year we were able to harvest 300 lbs. of fresh, nutritious greens to donate to the Food Bank.

It was a great start to 2017 and we’re looking forward to plenty more donations to follow.

Hospital to help fund animal care RAPS hopes more independence will mean more animal sanctuaries PHILIPRAPHAEL Staff Reporter

T

he Richmond Animal Protection Society (RAPS) announced Tuesday (April 25) a significant shift in the organization’s direction that has the potential to get a lot of tails wagging in delight.

According to RAPS’ CEO and executive director, Eyal Lichtmann, the organization is on its way to a self-sufficient and hopefully financially independent future with plans to open its own veterinary hospital that will not only look after animals under RAPS’ care, but provide a service for paying customers.

“This is huge,” Lichtmann said when the News visited the No. 5 Road shelter this week. “We have re-strategized the entire operation over the last year.”

Part of what he, and others in the organization, have come up with was a way to significantly cut medical costs that were weighing RAPS down, while encouraging increased community and corporate involvement that has charted the way ahead for a new medical facility for pets and their owners from around the region.

Those plans have also prompted a new name – Regional Animal Protection Society – to better reflect RAPS’ scope of assistance.

The name is subject to approval by the organization’s board of directors in the coming weeks.

“We will always be Richmond,” Lichtmann said. “We are Richmond. Our home is in Richmond. We see ourselves as a Richmond legacy because we started out as Richmond’s homeless cats and transformed into the Richmond Animal Protection Society.”

located locally at a previously vacant, 7,000-square-foot, second floor space at the Richmond Auto Mall. Plans are to renovate the site and have it operational, and generating revenue, by the end of this year.

Lichtmann, who joined RAPS just over a year ago, said the organization was spending about $250,000 annually on medical care. While that was provided by local vets at a discount, it still represented a hefty cost – one Lichtmann wanted to pare down.

“It was too much,” he said, adding that now, the bill has been cut in half by encouraging the vets to become board members, donate their services and allow RAPS to purchase medications through them at cost, rather than retail prices.

“And we want to reduce that remaining medical cost to zero,” Lichtmann said.

While that sounds like a tall order, Lichtmann said the model to help achieve it was

already out there.

“I asked, why don’t we run a social enterprise, like the SPCA in Vancouver, where they have their own clinic which uses the excess capacity after all their animals are cared for and open it to the public,” he said.

“They make quite a bit of money as an animal hospital. So, why shouldn’t we do the same – take the resources that were being spent before and open up our own clinic, hire our own vets, and whatever extra we have, offer it to the paying public. And when they come, they know that the money they spend will go directly back to the animals at RAPS for their care and the opening up of sanctuaries.”

The sanctuaries portion of RAPS’ revamp is a unique aspect that speaks directly to the organization’s no-kill policy, Lichtmann said.

To be a true, no-kill agency takes plenty of effort to handle the number of animals the shelter receives annually, Lichtmann said.

And that means an effective pet adoption program and foster homes – RAPS has about 120 volunteer homes locally where animals can be better socialized and pre-

pared for adoption.

Another “release valve” to funnel animals through and prevent the shelter from being overwhelmed is the creation of sanctuaries.

“We already have Canada’s only cat sanctuary that, right now, has 400 to 500 cats from all over the province who have been deemed unadoptable,” Lichtmann said. “It’s a magical place.

“And we want to expand that model and have the resources to open a dog sanctuary in Richmond.”

But RAPS is not stopping there, if the organization manages to establish a haven for dogs, a sanctuary for rabbits would be next.

“Sanctuaries are a very important part of the model,” he said.

But key to making all of that a reality is the establishment and success of the animal hospital, which, Lichtmann stressed, is not being funded by any public money and will not be reliant on RAPS retaining the City of Richmond’s contract for providing animal welfare services – something RAPS is currently in negotiations for.

“We want to run this as a social enterprise,” Lichtmann said. “That’s the ability for a charity to run a business that allows it to be financially independent.

“What that means is you’re not going to donors and holding fundraisers for operational needs all the time,” he added. “But you are going to donors for support to enhance what you’re doing.”

Lichtmann estimated the auto mall will be the hospital’s home for around six years, after which the city’s new animal shelter should be built, in service and able house the operation.

Funding for the $2 million needed to renovate the auto mall building, which once housed a Bank of Nova Scotia’s financing operation, is being raised through a capital campaign RAPS kicked off this week.

If all goes well, Lichtmann

said RAPS’ hospital will be able to confidently offer the kind of extended treatment that helped save the life of Isabelle, a pit-bull who suffered severe burns in a trailer fire just before last Christmas.

“I can’t tell you how many communications from the public we received to put Isabelle down because the cost was too great to treat her,” Lichtmann said, adding that so far it has taken tens of thousands of dollars to get her back to health.

“But no-kill is our mandate and just because she got caught in a fire doesn’t mean we should euthanize her.

But her solitary case presented a big financial hit to RAPS at the time.

“Were we worried about where we’d get the money to pay the bills? Absolutely,” Lichtmann said. “We ended up doing a campaign in the community that people responded to really well and we were able to cover the costs. But we took on the responsibility before we knew we’d raise the money.”

Today, Isabelle is in a new home and is healthy again.

“Hers is an extreme case, but that’s our no-kill ethos,” Lichtmann said.

It’s those types of successes that is helping draw more support for RAPS from the community, including the corporate world.

“We went through a lot of changes and heartache in the past year. And a lot of people stepped up to the plate in the organization to take on more responsibility.

Now, we have the organizational culture that can be the envy or any other organization,” Lichtmann said.

“Everyone is working towards how we do things better and more efficiently,” he added. “And because of that, our (animal) health

rates are up. Our adoptions are up. Staff time away is way down. People love getting up in the morning and coming to work now.

“It’s such a great organizational culture. It’s taken a year to get there. But it’s absolutely wonderful that now you see more successes and more people wanting to get on that bandwagon.”

One of them has been Applewood Nissan, which has not only donated the space for the animal hospital, but provided a new van for the shelter’s use.

“The Applewood group and its principals of the company are very driven by various charities,” said Kevin Kennedy, Applewood Auto Group’s general manager of fleet lease and special community projects.

“They are very generous and recognize the importance of what RAPS does.”

One look during a tour of the RAPS shelter convinced Kennedy to take the matter up with Applewood’s brass and there was no hesitation in approving an arrangement to provide assistance.

While there has been some public recognition of the dealership’s involvement, through a small amount of business steered their way, Kennedy said the decision to get involved with RAPS was never predicated on that.

“Car dealers, in general, are very generous people,” he said. “And Applewood is no exception to that.

“But this is also a good thing for the auto mall, in general. This vet clinic is going to draw thousands and thousands of patients.

And in the car business, the adage is that you sell more cars when you put more bums in seats. So that has the potential to be a big part of what the vet clinic brings. And I am certain it will be a going concern for many years.”

He already runs the print company Greener Print, which subscribes to environmentally sustainable practices. And now he has branched out, driven in part by his love of automobiles, to offer a service that rents highpriced, hybrid and electric-powered luxury cars.

Located on the eastern end of Westminster Highway, EV Rentals was officially opened on Earth Day (April 22), but the sight of three, high-performance, upmarket, super luxury vehicles parked side-by-side in front of a stand of electric charging stations has, for weeks prior, already caused quite a stir.

Sea Island-based Helijet International has extended its existing helicopter air service contracts with six of B.C.’s world-renowned fishing resort lodge clients located on the Haida Gwaii Islands and Bella Bella, along the Central-West coast of British Columbia. Lau headed to Colorado on a full-ride Mark Booth

S

he partnered up with former San Diego State University standout Christine Wong at her first-ever Junior Opening Day at the Quilchena Golf and Country Club. Now, Alisha Lau is about to embark on her own collegiate career south of the border.

The Grade 12 student at Burnett Secondary School has earned a full-ride scholarship to the University of Colorado. The lucrative deal reflects her status as one of the top junior age talents in the country and her rather rapid ascend into an elite player.

Lau was only nine when she played alongside Wong on that spring afternoon. She influenced her enough to eventually drop competitive dance and focus only on golf.

“Christina was just finishing high school at the time or going to college. She told me I should start playing Junior Linkster events and that’s how it all started, smiled Lau. “Christine has always been there

since I was young and her sister (Stephanie) too.

“But it wasn’t until I was 13 that I began to take it more serious. I got Rob (Houlding) as my coach and moved up to bigger tournament events. Older girls were telling me I had good potential and I just started getting better and better.

Lots of people have said my learning curve has been quite quick.”

By the time she was 15, Lau had earned a spot on the national junior team and university programs were paying plenty of attention.

About a year later, schools were allowed to approach her under the strict NCAA recruiting guidelines. She already had at least one offer on the table when Colorado entered the picture. The Buffaloes coaching staff happens to include Canadian Golf Hall of Famer and Vancouver native Brent Franklin who had earlier scouted Lau. “I was definitely interested in Colorado but wasn’t too sure where I was on their list,” she recalled. “I was kind of being pushed by these other schools that I was interested in and was teeter-tottering a bit.

me to come (for an unofficial) visit but I had a couple of other things going on and couldn’t go. She

called me back later and said they wanted to offer me a full-ride scholarship. I was on the plane

the next morning and missed my socials test. I didn’t even have a chance to tell my teacher where I was. It was a little bit of a jumble for a couple of days but definitely exciting.”

At the time, Lau could only make a verbal commitment then proceeded to have an impressive competitive summer. She was fourth at the Canadian Juniors in Nova Scotia and sixth at the B.C. Women’s Amateur. She also qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur in New Jersey.

Lau made an official visit to the Boulder campus last October and signed her National Letter of Intent a few weeks later.

“Alisha was a highly-recruited player and we are very excited that she choose CU,” said Kelly. “She has a lot of high level tournament experience and has very sound fundamentals that will blossom with more experience at the collegiate level. She is a dedicated student and athlete who will represent our program and CU in a first rate manor.”

From page 20 Lau also got a taste of campus life at a large Pac-12 school during her visit and went to a Buffaloes football game at Folsom Field with over 40,000 fans in attendance.

“The football team had gone from worst to first in the Pac 12 South and they were calling it ‘the rise is real.’ It was pretty big just walking down to the stadium, seeing the marching band and all the school spirit. It’s quite dynamic and quite different than back here but a very exciting thing too,” she said.

The collegiate golf season is split into fall and spring schedules. It means Lau will have to take a different approach to her usual summer tournament schedule. She currently is practising regularly under Houlding at his training centre in East Richmond.

Ideally, her game will be peaking when she heads to Boulder in mid-August.

“I’m definitely going to be playing some local events to build myself up for the major tournaments in the summer. It’s usually a pretty crazy six weeks where I’m going all over the place. This time I have to be more careful and not overplay before I go to school with the season starting in September,” she explained.

Lau describes her game as being “wellrounded” with her mid to short irons being her strength. She is also consistently in the fairway off the tee and it’s typically her putter that determines just how good her round will be.

“I like the diversity of different shots and how creative you can get,” she added. “I have played volleyball and softball at school, as well as other sports, but you can’t sub

out in golf. It’s a four to five hour-grind that offers so many different things in one.

“As much as you are playing against competitors, it’s really me against the course. I’m trying to go out there and play my best to give myself the best opportunities.”

She has enrolled in Colorado’s College of Arts and Sciences for now. She is considering business school or another program that is equivalent to kinesiology back home.

Well, as our population has grown and the demand for land continues to rise, backyards have become a luxury.

With the densification happening in areas such as Vancouver and Richmond, backyards are quickly being replaced (if the house is not sold to a developer looking to build a condominium project) with carriage or laneway homes.

How important are relationships – let me count the ways!

eflecting on their rich history and pouring energy into the vital grassroots level to ensure the future remains bright. It’s a juggling act Richmond City Baseball (RCBA) continues to impressively negotiate.

For the fourth consecutive season, the 54-yearold association has enjoyed a growth in registration numbers with over 550 players hitting the diamonds. With Richmond’s shrinking school enrolment numbers, that is no easy feat. The RCBA has managed to pull it off thanks to an attractive all-round program that has something for players of all ages and levels. It also has reached out to its neighbouring sports organizations — a gesture that might have seemed unusual a few years ago.

Rather than a “every man for himself” mentality, a number of the city’s sports groups are working with each other, including a monthly meeting among respective presidents.

“Richmond is growing population wise but not necessarily kids,” said RCBA president John Braaten. “We have got to the point where we have to share kids now. We are working with both hockey associations, Richmond F.C. and Richmond Lacrosse where we are sharing our

schedules. There is communication now which is exciting.

“For grassroots or house players, after baseball is done, we want them to go play hockey or soccer in the winter.”

What has to be most encouraging for Braaten and his executive is over 70 percent of RCBA’s registration is kids 11 and under. The Mosquito age group (10-and-11-year-olds) has grown from 96 to 120 players. At the next youngest age, Tadpole is overcapacity with 13 teams.

Now it’s up to the association to try and retain those numbers and kids work their way through the programs.

It’s why adjustments have been made by B.C. Minor Baseball to make the game more enjoyable, including the return of pitching machines at the Tadpole level and reducing the number of players in the field from nine to six with no outfielders.

“It’s to give the kids more chances and more reps,” explained Braaten. “That way you don’t have ‘Johnny’ standing in the field for two hours doing nothing and he doesn’t like baseball anymore. You can also see the increase in talent at the Mosquito level from it.

“We are retaining kids now. At the 13U level we have also gained an extra team over last year and we are almost back up to four teams at Bantam

as well. If it keeps going, it helps our (oldest) midget program. We have to make sure that is loaded now that we have (a top tier) College Prep team too.”

A steady downpour couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm three weekends ago when the RCBA hosted its Opening Day celebration at Palmer Field — the four diamond complex, complete with a clubhouse and concession — that is now being operated by the association.

Braaten estimates over 400 players attended to not only celebrate the start of the season but pay tribute to the past too. Former executive members, who were influential in building Richmond City Baseball, were honoured, as were past championship teams, dating all the way back to 1965. New recognition signs will be installed on backstops at Gibbons, Blundell and Brighouse.

“We took some time going through the B.C. Minor Baseball yearbooks,” said Braaten in coming up with the champions honour roll list, that also includes teams from the old West and South Richmond Associatons, along with the Richmond Budgies.

The Palmer complex will also be adjusted to host a couple of major B.C. Minor tournaments — the 13U AA John Main (May 25-28) and the 11U A provincial championships (Aug. 3-6). Blundell will host the 15U AAA provincials, July 27-30.

It was historic win for the Canadian men’s rugby team at the Singapore Sevens and it was Nathan Hirayama leading the way.

The 29-year-old had an outstanding tournament as Canada captured its first-ever cup title by defeating the United States in the championship game. Hirayama also produced a hat trick of tries in a big quarter-final victory over New Zealand. He was named player-of-the-game in the final and was selected to tournament Dream Team as well. Canada will look for more success as the HSBC Seven Series concludes with stops in Paris and London next month. The Richmond News is proud to recognize Nathan as Athlete of the Month for April.

Trio of Richmond teams off to Coastal Cup finals A

trio of Richmond youth soccer teams have advanced to the Coastal Cup Championships in Aldergrove.

The B.C. Soccer showcase event is in its 54th year and features boys and girls age group finals at the “A” and “B” levels.

All finalists have also secured berths in this summer’s Provincial Cup championships in early July.

Richmond F.C.’s U18 Metro team continued its outstanding season with a dominating 4-1 win over Surrey Pegasus on Sunday at Hugh Boyd.

Fullback Sean Minato broke a 1-1 deadlock when he headed home Jovan Dhillon’s corner kick in the dying seconds of the opening half. Dhillon scored a pair himself, including a second half penalty.

Richmond had already locked up a Provincial Cup berth after winning the Metro Selects League regular season title with an unbeaten 14-0-4 record. The boys will face Burnaby Lakers in the U18A championship game.

The rivals were the clear top two teams over the course of the season.

Meanwhile, the Richmond Girls Soccer Association has two teams moving onto the Coastal Cup finals.

U16 Richmond F.C. has continued its impressive run at the Metro Selects level by advancing to the cup final for the second straight year after a thrilling 4-3 win over the Fraser Valley Selects. The girls are scoring plenty of goals in the post-season, earlier defeating Port Moody 4-1 in quarter-final play.

The locals also put together a solid regular season, finishing with a 13-6-2 league record.

They will face the Upper Island Tide in the cup final.

A terrific inaugural season for the U13 Galaxy at the rep level continued with a 1-0 road win over the North Shore Interceptors. The Galaxy have had plenty of drama during their cup run, producing earlier penalty kick wins over Langley and Coquitlam Metro Ford. They will face Vancouver Island champions Bays United in the U13B Cup final.

The Coastal Cup finals are slated for May 6-7 at the Aldergrove Athletic Park.

The Galaxy will be in South Surrey for their Provincial “B” Cup tournament in July, while both Richmond Metro teams will be at Newton Athletic Park for the Provincial “A” Cup championships.

A new local youth cycling team is about to take flight.

The Richmond Flyers will be holding an information night on Thursday, May 4 (6:15 p.m.) at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The team is open to youth ages 10-to-18 and no experience is necessary. The Flyers will be headed by Erich Harvey — a national certified coach who has worked with provincial champions.

“I have seen clubs in Vancouver built and the numbers have been high. It hasn’t been captured here yet and I thought let’s do something,” said Harvey.

A summer road season, from May to August, will feature two weekly sessions and cost $200. There will also be a two month cyclocross season in the fall for for $50.

Hand cycling — a Paralympic discipline —

is free of charge.

“We will start on the road but you don’t necessarily need a road bike. I actually recommend a cycle cross bike,” continued Harvey.

“We will do cycle cross in the fall and it is probably the most fun for the kids. It’s in the fields and it’s about getting muddy and challenging yourself. There is mountain bike as well for those who were interested.”

Eventually, Harvey would like to see the team entering competitions, including the provincial championships and B.C. Super Week. However, he wants his riders to come away with much more than medals and trophies.

“We will be going over route planning, safety and education,” he added. “They will be learning life long bike skills that will keep people safe. There is also the physical fitness aspect and building friendships.”
