e’re into the thick of it now.

Candidates for the provincial election are out in force, knocking on doors, staging photo ops and flooding the airwaves with campaign slogans.

In today’s paper, you’ll see our contribution to the rhetoric. We’ve put together a 12-page section that profiles the local candidates and looks at a variety of provincial issues and how they play out in Richmond.

Reporter Graeme Wood even tagged along with a few of the candidates as they went door-knocking to hear what constituents had to say about everything, from the 15 per cent foreign owners tax to wait times at Richmond Hospital.

Next week, three all-candidate meetings are planned in Richmond: See page 13 for details.

The hope is that, with all this exposure you, the Richmond resident, will get a chance to size up the parties, their policies and the individuals who hope to enact them.

Some may groan at all this coverage and view elections as one, long ad campaign full of vote-catching promises and strategic positioning. And if you’re only looking at the “horse race” element of a campaign, there is some truth to that. But elections are also about issues and independent organizations mobilizing to get their ideas in front of the public.

In this election, we’ve seen some great examples of that: a coalition of affordable housing advocates released a comprehensive 10-year plan to address housing affordability; child care advocates have articulated the economic, as well as child welfare, argument for $10/day daycare; B.C.’s Community Health Centres Association has a plan to deal with doctor shortages and hospital wait times; the taxpayers federation in B.C. has ideas on how the province can reduce debt.

These are perennial points of debate that go well beyond a four-week election campaign.

But timing’s everything; it’s no coincidence these initiatives are being launched now when the public and our potential representatives are looking for a way forward.

And this is the part I find hard to be cynical about. When these organizations and their 10-year plans get coverage, the rest of us get exposure to new ideas and potentially better ways of doing things. I find this incredibly encouraging, because the focus is on solutions put forward by some people who have been toiling in their given sector, often for years.

Yes, elections are about winning and losing and sure there’s a lot of tired rhetoric, but we’d do well to keep our ears open to the surrounding conversations.

Voting is part of the process, but elections are also about taking stock and imagining new possibilities. We’re neglecting our responsibility when we do anything less.

YOU MEAN THE TORIES HAD IT RIGHT? In his final term in office, Prime Minister Harper and his Government acted to raise the age of eligibility for the CPP (and OAS) to 67, over a period of years.

When the Liberals were elected in late 2015, one of the first steps Prime Minister Trudeau took was to restore the old eligibility rules. So we’re back to 65 and so forth.

Well, over the Easter Holiday, the CD Howe Institute released a report calling for a raise in the age of eligibility, first to 66, over the next decade. The report then suggests to raise the age to 67 by about 2048.

In the report, one reason given for this rise in age is to “nudge seniors to stay in the workforce a little longer”.

Certainly it suggests that the next generation is either short of people or short of skills, or both (not to mention anything about jobs being snapped up by Robots). But the primary worry I expect is that with about 5,000 baby boomers retiring per week now, we have arrived at the point where there are not enough younger workers to support everyone receiving pensions!

I now wonder whether our Federal Government in the coming years will give us (older people) some tax incentives to stay on the job!

Dear Editor, And so it begins. It’s that time when politicians, local and provincial, spend ridiculous amounts of money to try and convince us (and themselves) that somehow they want to help make our society better, instead of just making their own lives better.

If there’s one thing that Donald Trump taught us (now there’s an oxymoron, literally) it’s that many people are so jaded by the whole political farce that they will choose a farcical leader to lead.

Christy Clark does not have the best interest of her constituents at heart; she never did. The problem is, can we be sure that any candidate actually does?

Politics tends to attract people who say all the right things for some form of personal gain, that is dressed up as altruism.

Too often, the individuals who would make the best leaders in our society, do not want the title.

The people who are really keeping the world together are the ones who have to choose between Candidate A, B, and what’s behind Door #3.

What's with all the U-turns?

Dear Editor, It has come to my attention that too many drivers are making U-turns on the streets of Richmond.

I have done some research and also talked to the RCMP and confirmed that current B.C. traffic rules do not permit any U-turn on the road unless it is clearly marked.

I have seen people making all kinds of U-turns on the streets daily and even in places where clearly there is a no U-turn sign posted.

Some of those turns were really risky and could have caused accidents.

To be fair, I think a lot of drivers, regard-

less of being new or experienced, are not even aware of the no U-turn traffic rule in British Colombia.

Might it be due to the shortage of traffic police or are they are assigned with more important duties.

I seldom see such violators being warned or caught.

Is there a way that Richmond News or the Richmond RCMP can provide some education or communication to the public and also start to enforce the penalty on the violators?

Dear Editor, Re: “New facility named ‘Minoru Centre for Active Living,’” News, April 14.

How did anyone come up with an overblown name such as Minoru Centre for Active Living?

Isn’t it obvious that a facility devoted to aquatics, seniors’ activities, recreation and sports is designed to encourage ‘active living’?

Simplicity, please.

Why not just call it Minoru Centre?

Or better still, put it to a public contest like the one held years ago for the No. 2 Road Bridge, a name suggested by a member of the public and chosen in an open vote by residents.

Medical system is ailing

Dear Editor, Re: “Doctor crisis closes clinic,” News, April 12.

Reading of losing another place of medical care here in Richmond is indeed worrisome.

I am sure some of the reason for this has to do with the paper mill. Young doctors don’t want to be tied to, or have the expense of paper files, so they won’t put themselves in that position.

I think you will see a replacement clinic open not too long after this one closes, thus a fresh start on electronic files, and no expensive conversion to digital.

That being said, I am, in fact, wanting to present my personal gripes about the overall system.

First, without a doubt, we must get rid of the Liberal government in this province.

They are supposed to be looking after our medical and hospital health needs. Along with their task of looking after education and transportation, their job is very defined.

They like to get involved in things our provincial government has no say in, or spend billions of dollars on bridges, inventing ways for good friends with their Public-Private Partnership agreements to profit incredibly. For example, we were told it would be 2013 before we could have three-car trains on the Canada Line.

Due to the PPP agreement, nothing has changed, even though ridership is well past best projections.

Schools! Teachers had to go to court to get our government to spend our money

Dear Editor, As National Volunteer Week approaches, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the many volunteers from our community who help to make life better for the hundreds of neglected, injured and homeless animals cared for every year at the BC SPCA Richmond Branch. From cat cuddling to small animal socialization, from assisting with fundraising events to helping with administrative tasks, the SPCA could not exist without the amazing, dedicated and compassionate volunteers who work alongside our staff to create a better life for our community’s most vulnerable animals.

Thank you to each and every volunteer who has made a life-saving difference to the animals in our care.

Now, full circle — health care. I have been waiting 17 months for a hip replacement. My ability to walk, work, play, or socialize has disappeared. I would love to sleep more than two hours, or watch a movie without yelping in pain from adjusting my posture slightly. What happens when you walk in a manner that accommodates a problem like that? You need the other hip replaced and probably the knee. What a ridiculous amount of wasted money and time wasted.

I blame our provincial Liberals first and foremost. They of the years of broken promise. But what about our surgeons?

They “tsk tsk” the provincial process, but the only solution they offer is privatization, which translates into dollars.

Dear surgeon, when is the last time you stood up in public and said in a loud voice “my patient comes first”? Administer care to the best of your ability, to do no harm and so on. When is the last time you or your office reached out to a patient to see how they were doing, reassess their needs, do your best to be your best?

I came in as a young 64-year-old man, now I am an old, 68-year-old.

We are the ones that formulate change with our singular vote, Each and every member of the Liberal majority has been complicit by either qualification or silence on what has been criminal too many times in the past.

So, they should all be fired.

Library friends say thank you The Friends of the Richmond Library held our Spring Sale over the weekend of March 25 and 26.

All proceeds of our sales benefit the Richmond Public Library and our members spend countless hours throughout the year gathering, sorting, pricing and packing books and putting on the spring and fall sale.

We want to especially thank Thompson Community Centre for providing such an excellent venue for our sale.

We also want to acknowledge Save on Foods at Terra Nova for their donation of the food and refreshments that fuel our volunteers over the weekend and to thank the student volunteers who assist us throughout the sale.

Money talks in call over farmhouse size Dear Editor, Re: “City proposes ALR house limits,” News, April 19.

This week, Richmond’s planning committee voted in favour of home sizes that are more than double the maximum size recommended by the Agricultural Land Commission, and over triple the maximum size of a home in Richmond’s urban areas.

The ALC states that residential homes on ALR lands should not exceed the sizing of homes on adjacent urban areas in order to limit speculation, preserve farmland, and keep farmland “affordable.”

By not following ALC recommendations for bylaws, means that Richmond council are creating their own rules, and blatantly defying the ALC’s premise and purpose. It means that they are not only creating a draw for investors to buy up ALR lands, but they are indeed creating an unequal society with unequal rules. They are creating even more hostility in our city as they pit urban vs. rural (or those living on ALR lands), culture against culture, and creating a two-tiered system where money talks.

Is this surprising? No. But does this go against the ALC? Does it go against official community plans? Does it fly in the face of sustainability? Yes. As the Port of Vancouver assures us that we can’t feed ourselves and must ship food from China, as the government takes more land out of production with a massive bridge, and as we let speculators buy up precious ALR lands and build monster homes — no, we won’t be able to feed ourselves.

Sustainability in Richmond is becoming a joke, where money talks every time. But even more disappointing is a provincial government that doesn’t actually work to preserve farmland and our shared future.

f they claim their voices weren’t heard during the process, they certainly made up for it at city council Wednesday night.

Such was the surge on city hall from Richmond’s farming community, that the planning committee meeting had to slide downstairs, to city council chambers, to accommodate around 120 people.

Most of them had converged on city HQ to protest a city staff recommendation to restrict the size of residences on Richmond farmland to 5,382 square-feet — a move prompted by city council earlier this year to stem the proliferation of mega homes on farmland.

And many of them seized the opportunity to vocalize their disgust, plea with council and, through Richmond Farmers Institute (RFI) president Todd May, express disbelief at how city staff had informed the farming community not to take part in a community-wide survey on the issue.

What it all added up to was a near, five-hour long meeting, ending with what the majority of the planning committee — including Mayor Malcolm Brodie — deem a “compromise.”

After much discussion among city councillors — including an unsuccessful motion from Coun. Bill McNulty to refer the matter back to staff for more consideration — Brodie successfully tabled an amendment for house size limits to be doubled to 1,000 square metres (10,764 square feet) if the land it’s being built on is at least half an acre in size.

Anything less than half an acre would be subject to the original staff recommendation of 500 square metres (5,382 square feet).

“It’s a balancing act,” Brodie told the Richmond News.

“There are those that want to minimize (the house sizes) and those that want no regulations at all.”

Brodie said he made the motion to resolve the issue, even though council placed a moratorium on such development applications last month.

Other farmers told of how they are continuing the work of their parents and grandparents and don’t want the ability to pass on their heritage to their own children hampered by a restriction on house sizes.

Not everyone backed the farmers, though.

Michelle Li said all the city needs to do is follow the current ALC guidelines and “stop pitting cultures against each other.”

Adding that she, too, wishes she could build a larger home on her urban lot to accommodate her family, but she can’t.

City staff’s recommendation that an accessory, residential building on the property be limited to 753 square feet was approved.

Last month, a near unanimous Richmond city council placed a moratorium on building permit applications for houses on protected farmland, following a recent flood of such applications to build large houses on the ALR. In January, when council began a public consultation process on restricting home sizes on farmland, Couns. Carol Day and Harold Steves called for a moratorium, fearing a rush of development. Since then, there has, indeed, been a deluge, with the average size of application at almost 13,000 square-feet; one proponent asked for 32,660 square-feet.

Until now, Richmond was one of the few Metro Vancouver municipalities not to have any kind of effective restriction.

hree women have each been sentenced to 18 months behind bars for their parts in a large-scale, Richmond-based immigration scam that has already sent their former employer to prison for seven years.

Jin “Fanny” Ma, Ming Kun “Makkie” Wu and Wen “Vivian” Jiang, all of Richmond, were sentenced after previously pleading guilty to several charges, including representing on immigration matters without authority, passport offences, misrepresentation, forgery and tax evasion.

As well as the jail term, each of the accused - all of whom worked for previously imprisoned Xu “Sunny” Wang at New Can Consultants Ltd. and Wellong International Investments Ltd - were fined: Ma: $96,000; Wu: $50,000; and Jiang: $74,000.

The sentencing, at Vancouver Provincial Court on Tuesday, was the result of a lengthy investigation into the activities of Wang’s two, unlicensed immigration consulting businesses offering services across Metro Vancouver.

According to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the investigation was the single, largest of its kind for immigration fraud in B.C.’s history.

From 2006 to 2013, more than 1,600 of New Can’s clients collectively paid approximately $10 million for fraudulent services — including creating the fictitious appearance of Canadian residency, forging documents and falsifying Chinese passports to help clients obtain permanent residency — the precursor to citizenship.

The CBSA’s Inland Enforcement Section has reviewed the list of clients, and is actively pursuing investigations on any

person found to have misrepresented themselves through fraud or deceit in order to obtain or maintain their permanent resident status in Canada.

In May 2015, new laws granted IRCC new powers to revoke citizenship. Prior to this, a judge was required. After just 15 people had their citizenship revoked in 2014, 131 met the same fate in 2015. To June of this year, 104 cases were successfully processed, according to IRCC. Wang’s clients were described by a federal prosecutor as “well-to-do” foreign nationals, willing to pay for fraud to get into Canada.

Wang’s activities were initially uncovered by immigration officials who found inconsistencies in his clients’ home addresses.

Last October, Wang was also found guilty of tax evasion after collecting about $10 million from his clients and not declaring his income (while collecting lowincome benefits).

Former TV reporter aims to personally connect with voters in new riding

n her book Christy Clark: Behind the Smile, author and former BC Liberal MLA Judy Tyabji recounts how former acclaimed Global BC reporter Jas Johal compared the two leaders in the 2013 provincial election.

As a reporter, Johal pondered who, between Premier Clark and then NDP leader Adrian Dix, would constituents want to have a beer with? Then answered his own question with “The answer is clear . . .

Dix was “too uptight,” explained Johal, who left his job at Global to become an LNG lobbyist and is now a BC Liberal candidate in the farm-laden RichmondQueensborough riding. The riding is effectively the former East Richmond riding, with the addition of a few NDP-leaning New Westminster residents, who comprise about 15 per cent of the riding’s population.

Door-knocking around Tait elementary, it’s understandable why Tyabji tapped on Johal to argue that “the personal touch can play a big role in helping voters connect with leaders.”

When asked about policies and ideologies, Johal frequently returns to how his experience as a foreign correspondent shaped his world view, leading him to believe that Clark’s government is on the right path.

“I’ve seen the worst in societies” and “I’ve seen extremes, left and right,” he

said.

Johal described his upbringing in an immigrant family as a great example of the available opportunities in this province.

That personal touch, and world experience, is his strength, he said. And it’s an element that should prove valuable, as a non-Richmond resident vying to become MLA in a riding that had comfortably chosen fellow Liberal Linda Reid for the past 26 years.

“As a journalist, you’re used to meeting people of all walks of life . . . and meeting people who disagree with you. And that’s OK; I welcome that; I’m comfortable with that,” said Johal.

Clearly.

While about four in 10 households indicated support for the Liberals, one man was having none of Johal’s platform, digging into the Liberals’ record on affordability for the middle-class.

Johal encouraged the man to disconnect his door chain and stated the Liberals have a “strong economy” and low taxes. But the man pointed to rising costs such as MSP, BC Hydro and gasoline.

“But you know we have the fifth lowest hydro costs in North America, right?” asked Johal, one of three South Asian candidates in a riding with a large Southeast Asian and South Asian population.

Eventually, the two parted amicably, as Johal’s Cantonese-speaking campaign assistant jotted down the man’s convictions in her custom, mobile voter list app.

“There’s always going to be people who say, ‘We want more,’” he said.

But, “I’m a centrist; I’m a pragmatist.

“You’ve got to get things done in this world,” said Johal, who repeats that government requires balance, and social services will follow from a strong economy.

In reply to critics who note that despite a strong economy, there has been an increase in wealth disparity, Johal said, “It’s not perfect, and we can have that debate.”

Regarding key local issues, Johal stands by his party’s platform: the Liberals had “guts” to implement the popular foreign

homebuyers’ tax, but any more regulatory measures would imperil the housing market; the George Massey Tunnel replacement bridge and highway expansion is necessary, despite opposition from the majority of the region’s mayors; and export-oriented farming is the best way to go, although diversifying crops for local consumption is a discussion that can be had.

After all, Johal noted, local food security is an issue that’s being tackled all around the world, reportedly.

“More choice is good for democracy,” said Marciniw, 46, an NDP supporter in early adulthood, when he helped unionize the casino he worked at. Only after studying political science and becoming motivated by Green leader Andrew Weaver’s climate change message did he make the switch, eventually joining the B.C. Green’s policy committee.

The seven-year Richmond resident frequently jogs up and down Azure, a neighbourhood, like so many, transitioning with mega homes, older residents and new Chinese immigrants.

At a new, tree-lined home, two Chinese permanent residents who wanted to vote said they were generally content, although they agreed if there was one issue that required fixing, it would be hospital services.

“The waits there are too long,” said a well-spoken woman.

The man suggested implementing private-pay health services, but cautioned he wouldn’t want an abusive for-profit system, such as China’s.

Marciniw is not supportive of a private pay system.

“Tommy Douglas is one of my heroes.

(Public healthcare) is an issue that is dear to me,” Marciniw said.

In a riding that had the lowest voter turnout in the last election (38.9 per cent as Richmond Centre), language barriers existed for Marciniw at about one in five homes.

At the first door, BC Green Party candidate Ryan Marciniw knocked on, along Azure Road in the Richmond North Centre riding, he was hit with strong opinion.

“I don’t trust her,” said a Chinese-Canadian realtor, of Premier Christy Clark.

Evidently, it was the problematic way in which the BC Liberals introduced, last August, the foreign homebuyers’ tax (disrupting a number of pre-existing transactions) that irked the man.

Marciniw seized the opportunity on the complex issue.

“Do you think this was a purely political move, considering the market was cooling months in advance?”

“Yes, it was,” said the realtor, who subsequently voiced concerns about the BC NDP running a viable economy and the Greens not being large enough to make a difference.

Marciniw assuaged those concerns.

“We’re growing,” he said.

Marciniw didn’t exactly offer up the fact the Greens will double the foreign buyers’ tax; instead, he directed the realtor, and apparent free-agent voter, to the Green’s website.

I

t almost seems Utopian: Clean air; little traffic; low crime rates; tree-lined streets; beautiful bike rides along an estuary, looking at distant, snow-capped mountains; flowers blooming; a glistening, historic fishing community; and, of course, a seemingly endless rise in one’s home equity.

Who wouldn’t love living in the riding of Richmond-Steveston? Why would anyone upset this apple cart?

I ask BC NDP candidate Kelly Greene, while knocking on doors in this predominantly single-family home riding, with her highly organized volunteer team, replete with voter ID lists and orange umbrellas.

This is, after all, hardly a battleground riding given its historic Liberal pedigree. Or is it?

Greene’s word-du-jour is “affordability.”

“Home equity is a double-edged sword,” said Greene, 37, a homeowner herself, whose plot of dirt has benefitted financially by a number of BC Liberal, federal and municipal policies and regulations — or lack thereof — in the real estate market.

Greene strips away the riding’s shiny attire.

She points to the emptying of children in neighbourhoods, forcing an underfunded school district to close schools.

“Are you aware, your child’s schools are facing a $10.5 million shortfall this year and programs will be cut?” she asks one resident, with children.

Liberals for failing to seismically upgrade the numerous schools in the riding, and adequately fund education.

Greene is also appealing to the rising tide of empty-nesters, who, while on the outside appear to be benefitting from the status quo, have several concerns — namely the fact their now adult children are having to move to distant communities or out of province, to raise their grandchildren. Or, they’re forced into inadequate housing as speculative forces — driven by what Greene says is poor government management of the real estate industry — create an empty-home syndrome and population decline across West Richmond.

And yet, many want, and need to maintain, home equity.

So, Greene walks a tightrope when confronted in a Seafair neighbourhood by a 40-something woman, with children, who “is at the brink” in meeting her bills (higher MSP fees, Hydro charges, ICBC rates) and yet concerned the recent foreign homebuyers’ tax has “messed everything up.”

The woman speaks to how there are no more children in the neighbourhood she bought into five years ago for $800,000.

“I’m banking on home equity,” she said.

“People can’t just move away,” and going into debt with a reverse mortgage or property tax deferrals isn’t palatable, said Greene The NDP is proposing new measures to cool down the housing market, namely with an annual “absentee speculators’ property tax” and money laundering task force.

Greene told the woman the NDP is tackling affordability as a “global response.”

uncommitted voter telling Greene there’s no need for another bike lane.

“Something’s gotta change,” she said.

Across the street, her neighbour begins barking about a bunch of nearby, three-level homes being built. Granted the issue is largely municipal (“I get this a lot,” said Greene), Greene noted it’s symptomatic of a red-hot real estate market, that is clearly a hot topic in Richmond-Steveston considering the effect it is having on the community at large.

Greene maintains a positive demeanour at the doors, with little mention of her opposition, but rather what the NDP intends to do.

“We’re going to accelerate fixing the schools,” she said (no definitive timeline).

“We’re freezing Hydro rates, ending MSP,” by raising corporate and high-income taxes and taxing speculators.

Nevertheless, few give Greene a definitive thumbs up. Rather, as the polls indicate, there appears to be a large contingent of engaged free agents (about 1/5).

If Greene convinces them social and community issues trump the Liberals’ broader economic goals of free trade and economic diversity, this one-pony contest could become a hurdle race.

hen it comes to deciding who has the economic plan that best fits and deserves a check mark on the ballot, the three major parties certainly have a wide-ranging number of focuses.

n Greens see future in green tech

As might be expected, the BC Green Party sees the future economy with an emphasis on environmentally-friendly, high-tech businesses. And Richmond would be an ideal location for many of them to put down roots, given the community’s cosmopolitan nature that would allow it to draw talent from other parts of the country and beyond, said Michael Wolfe, a local teacher who is running in the new riding of Richmond Queensborough.

Among them could be the likes of car-maker and energy storage firm Tesla, Wolfe said.

“We have such diversity, we need a hub here to harness the emerging opportunities.

Money to help finance that particular endeavour could come from funds diverted from pricey capital projects, such as the Massey tunnel replacement bridge, which is not supported by the Green Party.

“To pull some of that money back would allow for that rapid change to greener businesses,” Wolfe said.

He also suggested that, on a more provincial basis, BC Hydro’s mandate could be re-defined to include not just hydro-electric power generation and transmission lines, but energy projects that embrace new technologies, such as energy storage.

“What we need here is the leadership for a direction shift,” Wolfe said.

Incumbent MLA Teresa Wat, who ran in the riding of Richmond Centre in 2013 and is looking to win in the re-jigged Richmond North Centre riding, took a more global stance on how her party would handle the economy.

Wat, who served the last four years as B.C.’s Minister of International Trade, and Minister Responsible for the Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism, said her party’s economic platform addresses the concerns of her constituents by focusing on assisting small businesses. Part of that is helping them make the leap into Asian markets.

“Many small businesses, and there are so many in my riding, will only expand to the U.S. because it shares the same language and culture,” she said. “Not many are comfortable exporting to Asia. But now that the U.S. is in a protectionist mode and the economy in the Asia-Pacific region is rising, there are so many opportunities there.”

Providing a pathway are B.C.’s trade and investment offices, which are located in priority markets dotted around the globe, particularly in Asia. There are four offices in China, one in Japan, South Korea and three in India.

“We find that the south east Asian market should not be overlooked because it is the fifth-largest economy in the world and they have a large middle class and young population, which creates a lot of opportunity for our small and medium-sized companies,” Wat said.

Singh, who has been running a small law firm for the past 18 years, said he understands well the responsibilities of providing employment and meeting expenses as a small business owner. He also knows the value of small businesses in the overall economic picture.

“Medium and small businesses are the drivers of the economy in many ways,” he said, adding the NDP plans on giving that segment a lift by reducing the small business tax by half a per cent.

“We will also be creating a small business task force that will help places like Richmond, which has a host of small businesses – from the restaurants and small shops to manufacturers. It will advise the government on how to strengthen that sector and add more jobs.

“Small business is the backbone of the economy in B.C. and that really speaks to Richmond.”

One of the more prominent parts in the NDP’s platform is the promise of affordable child care, something Singh said would have a positive effect on the economy if introduced.

“When you have families that don’t have to worry about the affordability of childcare, you create more productive citizens in society,” Singh said. “And what I am hearing when I talk to people is that, in the last 16 years under the BC Liberals, life has become increasingly harder.”

The NDP fared best in Voting Area 1, otherwise known as west Burkeville, winning it with 62/171 cast ballots (of 311 eligible voters). Notably, Burkeville, comprises two areas by Douglas Crescent, with Wat winning the east side.

Voting Area 1 is also the area where Michael Wolfe’s Green Party picked up its most votes. Only 27 per cent of voters marked down Wat’s name in this area. Still, the Greens only beat Wat by one vote. Burkeville is one of the city’s more Caucasian neighbourhoods, with small singlefamily homes.

Ryan Marciniw (Green) Ryan Marciniw moved to B.C. 23 years ago, from Winnipeg. He soon met his life partner, Winnie, shortly after moving to Vancouver, and they have been together ever since.

The couple rescued their dog Macy May from the mean streets of Taiwan about five years ago, and plan to rescue more dogs after they find a larger home. Marciniw has a BA in political science from UBC and attended Langara College his first two years. He is currently working for Yellow Pages in the billing and finance department and has volunteered for the BC Green Party since December 2014 as the assistant chair of policy and research committee, conducting online forums, developing member-driven policy and researching and writing about policy.

He has volunteered on his strata corporation as treasurer.

Marciniw has studied the issues that face B.C. and has a good understanding of the policies and positions the government needs to follow to help guide the transition from a resource economy to a sustainable, clean energy economy.

Question: If you were premier for a day, what two pieces of legislation would you enact?

The two pieces of legislation I would enact as premier would be for electoral finance reform and to change the electoral system to a form of proportional representation.

Dong Pan (Independent) Dong Pan is currently a product manager at SAP Vancouver, the largest software company in Metro Vancouver and one of the world’s leading providers of business software.

He joined SAP in 2004, and has worked in multiple roles and various countries in the world since then.

Pan was a former engineer at Microsoft prior to his career at SAP and holds both a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

Dong actively participates in the local community with a special focus in economy and public education, and he recently presented a petition at the Richmond Board of Education with 6,000 signatures.

Question: If you were premier for a day, what two pieces of legislation would you enact?: I would enact a knowledge-based economy strategy act, to transform B.C.’s economy from natural resource-based economy to a knowledge-based economy, focusing on high value-added, clean high-tech industries, producing well-paid jobs for all British Columbians.

Secondly, I would enact an education reform act to admit to B.C.’s public education failure, and to fundamentally reform our public education system.

Richmond Steveston Richmond Steveston Population: 55,539 (2014) Size: 30 Km2 Detached homes: 10,305 (2011) English spoken at home: 32,855 Elections BC district office: 604-6642043 Liberal MLA John Yap’s bread and butter was Voting Area 117, the streets surrounding Westwind elementary, where he garnered 118/214 cast ballots (of 357 eligible voters). This area includes an adult-only townhouse complex and singlefamily homes. Between 2011 and 2016 its population fell by three per cent.

The NDP fared best in far west portion of Steveston Village. Voting Area 101 includes the apartments and co-ops west of Seventh Avenue. Scott Stewart fetched 86/168 cast ballots (of 332 eligible voters), compared to Yap’s 42.

Jerome Dickey of the Green Party had the most votes in Voting Area 71, along Springfield Drive, where there are two large townhouse and apartment complexes with relatively low property assessments, next to Manoah Steves elementary.

Teresa Wat (Liberal incumbent) Teresa Wat is proud to have served the past four years as the MLA for Richmond Centre, and honoured to run for again in Richmond North Centre.

She grew up in Hong Kong and immigrated to Canada in 1989. Wat holds a Masters of Arts in Communications and applied that in her career as a public servant in government, and later in various forms of media from television to radio to print.

Before she ran for office, Wat was president and CEO of Mainstream Broadcasting Corporation (CHMB) AM1320.

She entered public life in 2013, shortly after her husband passed away.

She had always talked about giving back to a province and country that had been so good to them, but never knew their time together would be so short.

“It was up to me, so I ran for office with our grown daughter cheering me on,” she said. “It’s been the greatest privilege of my life to serve the people of Richmond.”

I think we have a pretty good premier now!

I want to work with our premier and team to grow our economy, so we can keep making important investments in things like school seismic upgrades and additional long-term care spaces for seniors.

Kelly Greene (NDP) Kelly Greene was born in Richmond and has lived here for 27 years. She and her husband are raising three children and they enjoy Steveston’s welcoming and diverse community.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from UBC. She has worked for top tier accounting and banking companies, as well as led a team at a local Steveston business.

Greene has also been a public education advocate and has helped spearhead parent and community actions to protest devastating cuts to public education funding, which is a crucial investment in British Columbia’s future social and economic wellbeing.

Question: If you were premier for a day, what two pieces of legislation would you enact?

I would enact legislation that bans corporate, union, and non–B.C. origin donations, and cap the maximum allowable personal donation. Our representatives should be representing the interests of British Columbians, not the interests of large donors. I would also enact legislation to create $10/day childcare.

Available and affordable childcare is shown to have a positive effect on GDP, as well as generating positive revenue to the province. Further it relieves the crushing burden of childcare costs for young families, and also grandparents who are trying to help in any way they can.

Election 2017 Richmond-Queensborough Jas Johal (Liberal) Jas Johal was most recently the director of communications at the BC LNG Alliance. Formed in 2014, the alliance is the voice of British Columbia›s liquefied natural gas export industry.

Prior to joining the alliance he was a senior journalist at Global Television. He has spent more than two decades extensively traveling B.C. covering news and current affairs, focusing on a wide range of issues ranging from politics, business, transportation, health, and organized crime.

He has also served as Global Television’s Asia bureau chief based in Beijing, China and previously in New Delhi, India.

He has reported extensively on Asia’s rise, focussing on economic and foreign policy, energy, food, and water security, as well as labour and human rights.

Question: What two pieces of legislation would you enact if you were premier for a day?

I believe how society guides and cares for their children impacts our future, and making sure we take care of citizens who have built this great province remain a priority. I would enact a seniors charter and a separate childrens charter. Both policies would provide a framework for guiding government to better decisions related to seniors and children.

Kay Hale (Conservative) Kay Hale has lived in Richmond for more than 30 years. She grew up in Hong Kong in humble surroundings. Her father was a British military officer who served in the Second World War. Her husband is a retired mechanical engineer who served in the Korean War Together, they have two daughters and four grandchildren.

Hale is multilingual. She speaks English, Cantonese, Hindi and Punjabi. Her 28-plus years of business experience includes international management consultancy in Hong Kong, U.K. and Canada.

She is now a licensed realtor in B.C. Hale said she finds solace in volunteering and extending a helping hand to any cause.

Supporting food banks throughout the year, Hale said it is a good way to bring communities together and build morale.

During growing season she grows a full vegetable garden in her own backyard and is an active member and vice president of the Richmond Garden Club.

Her favourite reading material is History of Earth from its Formation to the Present Day, and Astronomy in its Natural Science.

Besides supporting the local food bank, Hale enjoys spending time with little children and teaching them about the stars and planets beyond and to seeing their faces light up with wonder when pointing out the International Space Station passing overhead.

Aman Singh (NDP) Aman Singh was born in India, raised in Hong Kong and educated at University of California — Berkeley and at the University of Victoria. He has a deep understanding of the diversity, issues and needs of people in Richmond-Queensborough.

Singh has made it a priority to donate time to people and organizations close to his heart and volunteered with Indigenous groups, national and international non-governmental organizations. He is a member and director of several non-profit societies.

Singh has been involved in civil rights activism for many years and is a civil rights lawyer who has focused on societal and political issues since 1999.

Question: If you were premier for a day, what two pieces of legislation would you enact?

I would enact the legislation the BC NDP has tabled to reform election financing, specifically banning union and corporate donations. I would also enact the childcare legislation that the NDP has proposed. Affordable and safe child care is a social necessity and it is the government’s function to provide the necessary support that allow for working parents to maximize their economic potential.

Michael Wolfe (Green) Michael was born and raised in East Richmond.

At 35-years-old, he is the fourth generation of his family to live, work, and play in the community.

As a lifelong learner, Wolfe, a public school teacher, graduated with honors from Cambie secondary school, then studied at Langara College and UBC to complete biology and education degrees. He is now completing his Masters in Education for Sustainability.

Wolfe has been heavily involved in local politics for the last decade and has run as a candidate and has made more than 60 presentations to city council on various issues, such as agricultural land use, health promotion and closing loopholes to assist with enforcing bylaws.

Wolfe is an active director on three local volunteer boards: Richmond Health Advisory Committee, Richmond Nature Park Society, and Garden City Conservation Society.

Question: If you were premier for a day, what two pieces of legislation would you enact?

I would enact legislation for: 1) campaign finance reform to eliminate corporate and union donations; and 2) protect children by securing universal, safe, and affordable child care.

Doug Perry and the Green Party had their best showing in Voting Area 91, southwest of No. 4 and Francis roads, and predominantly defined by the older multi-family complex Glenacres Village.

Here, the Greens took 22/159 cast ballots (of 373 eligible voters). Still, Reid defeated Sihota 78-49.

Note: In New Westminster’s Queensborough, which has an estimated population of 8,000, the NDP won 11/15 voting areas in 2013. In Queensborough, NDP MLA Judy Darcy garnered 1,185 of 2,433 votes, or 48.7 per cent of the popular vote.

Richmond Steveston Ray Sakata (Green) Roy Sakata was born in 1942 in Bridge River, B.C. in a Second World War Canadian Japanese internment camp.

He is a retired school administrator in the Richmond School District and at the Gitsegukla Gitskan First Nation Elementary School. He is a widower and has two adult children and two grandchildren.

Sakata earned a bachelor of education from UBC in 1967 and Masters of Arts (education administration) in 1977.

Public service volunteering has been an integral part of Sakata’s professional/community life. In B.C.’s Who’s Who Directory List he is recognized with achieving B.C, Heritage designation for Scotch Pond Fisherman dock and facilities. He is also a charter member of Britannia Heritage Shipyard Society. Sakata has served as a member of the board of directors of the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Center. He also continues his active involvement with the Rotary Club of Ladner ( 23 years) and volunteers at the Steveston Buddhist Temple.

Question: What two pieces of legislation would you enact if you were premier for a day?

I would enact a new model for caring for our chronically ill in which community-based clinics, of five home visitation doctors and two registered nurses with office staff, will be established as a pilot project for one year. Secondly, I would establish a B.C.-funded, Katimavik-like program to employ college and university youth to provide structured home visitation for elders in care facilities. The youth teams will work under the direction of communitybased care professionals to provide respite for family caregivers.

John Yap (Liberal - incumbent) John Yap was born into a close-knit family. His mom was a homemaker and his dad was a doctor. When he was 16, Yap’s emigrated from Singapore to Burnaby. He attended community college, then university, and graduated with a MBA from UBC. He worked as a credit intern with Royal Bank and then as a credit officer with TD Bank.

Yap’s venture into politics grew out of an ever-growing desire to volunteer in his community, beginning with involvement in the Rotary Club and Gilmore Gardens seniors housing.

He joined then-MLA Geoff Plant’s riding association and when Plant stepped down from government, he encouraged Yap to run to replace him in Richmond-Steveston.

During the past 10 years, Yap said he has enjoyed helping people in Richmond, resolving constituents’ problems, giving back to community groups who provide services to children, families and seniors. Question: If you were premier for a day, what two pieces of legislation would you enact?

Building on the BC Liberal government’s efforts, I would enact more legislation aimed at helping our children and seniors access affordable housing. And while it wouldn’t be enacting legislation, I would ensure our new hospital expansion would happen, and that seismically safe schools for our kids continues to be a priority.

Chak Au (NDP) Chak Au has been working for the Richmond community since he immigrated to Canada in 1988.

He currently serves the City of Richmond as a councillor. Prior to his election, he served Richmond as a school trustee for 12 years. As an elected representative, Au has established a track record of saying what he means and meaning what he says. A proud accomplishment is opening dialog to ensure English language is included on signage in Richmond.

For more than 20 years, he has been working as a family and child counsellor in Richmond for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority and understands the problems families have.

Establish a new cultural harmony act, which will give tools for municipalities to improve the relationship between multicultural communities.

Amend the B.C. Election Act to eliminate the influence of groups outside British Columbia to corrupt our elections.

Richmond South Centre Linda Reid (Liberal - incumbent) As B.C.’s longest-serving MLA, Linda Reid has built her reputation in the B.C. Legislature on her professional background in education, administration and community service. She is a well-respected and effective communicator, with an open-door policy and a genuine interest in those around her.

She has served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, one of the top three leadership positions in the province, since 2013 and as Deputy Speaker from 2009 to 2013. Prior to that, her ministerial responsibilities for early childhood development and childcare provided Reid the opportunity to bring her solid professional credentials to these critical areas of public policy.

Throughout her public service, Reid has worked to build a network of advisors comprised of people she serves outside the political process, whose counsel and wisdom guide her decisions and participation in policy development.

Question: If you were premier for a day, what two pieces of legislation would you enact?

Create a B.C. centre of excellence in technological innovation for disability and a second piece for enforcement/inducement so that all new construction is wheelchair-accessible.

It is the most densely populated Richmond riding and the second smallest in all of B.C., at seven square kilometres (Only Vancouver-False Creek is smaller). As noted by

Greg Powell (Green) Greg Powell is a community organizer and advocate on several issues including climate justice, Indigenous rights, active transportation, food security and poverty elimination. He has a background in engineering from the University of Waterloo and worked in the environmental nonprofit sector for several years before studying theology at the University of Toronto and then becoming a minister.

Powell worked for several years at the Pembina Institute, where he led an initiative to engage Alberta citizens on climate justice and renewable energy. He is a proud and dedicated father of two little ones; any time not in the office or on the campaign trail is spent with them.

Back-country skiing, marathon running, trail running, triathlon training, and contemplative practices are important ways for Powell to stay mentally healthy and balanced.

I would enact basic income to eliminate poverty. And I would enact climate legislation proposed by the B.C. Greens.

CBC, while the riding is new, polling stations within its boundaries supported the B.C. Liberals by 53.2 per cent to the NDP’s 23.6 per cent in the 2013 provincial election.

arly and Jeff Watts, both born and raised in Richmond, are on the move.

By every definition, they fit into what the Vancouver Board of Trade recently described as the “missing middle” in Vancouver’s affordable housing crisis — middle-income earners who don’t qualify for subsidized housing but don’t have enough money to buy adequate family-friendly housing, which is also “missing” in the region.

Karly is a childcare worker, Jeff a chiropractor. Their squirt, Rowan, is six months old. They’re being shunted from their long-term rental house as their landlord, a personal friend, now requires the home.

Enter an intense six-month house hunt for these undecided voters.

“It turned out when we started looking to buy, we could not afford anywhere near what we need — we needed at

minimum a townhome to accommodate our growing family — but couldn’t find anything in Richmond, so we started to look elsewhere; Cloverdale; Langley.

“It turned out all the open houses we were going to were full of young families like us, from Vancouver from Richmond being pushed out that way. It was super intimidating,” said Karly.

What followed was a string of bidding wars for roughly five-year-old townhouses in the range of 1,100-1,500 square feet.

“Gone were the days of negotiations. Our realtor was at a loss,” she explained.

One townhouse had 11 offers.

Eventually they ended up paying tens of thousands of dollars over the asking price for a two-bedroom townhouse in Cloverdale and used the provincial government’s first-time homebuyers’ loan, the BC HOME Partnership program (interest free for the first five years), for half of their down payment.

While generally pleased with their new place, it is “not ideal,” said Karly and they’ll likely need to move again within

five years.

The couple initially looked at rental options but there were none.

“We’d be more worried if we had to rent. A place like this is probably $2,200 or more. That’s more than a mortgage,” said Jeff.

Karly also didn’t like the volatility of renting in this market.

“It’s not stable,” she said.

Another big problem Karly identified was the fact that the bids were coming in without subjects to inspection.

“People are allowed to buy without an inspection. I hope that’s something that changes. It’s worrisome,” said Karly.

Now that they are newly minted homeowners, they’re asked by the Richmond News how a government should address housing: Should it enact regulations to cool demand or should the free market generally prevail?

Karly leans toward more regulations while Jeff is only certain of one thing: more supply needs to be built, considering the few options that were available.

s executive director for Chimo Community Services, Diane Sugars has seen a steady increase in families and seniors, in particular, falling into homelessness and volatile housing situations over the past four years.

“People are experiencing financial difficulty related to housing. They’re spending the majority of income on rent.

More seniors are at risk. These are things we haven’t seen before,” said Sugars.

Simply put, rents are skyrocketing, and there’s few places to rent, said Sugars, whose non-profit group specializes in family and personal crisis services, but over the past few years reports dealing more and more with housing as a specific cause of such crisis.

The breakdown of the extended family is also occurring. Increasingly, young adults are having children and pushing their senior parents out the door, as they’re un-

able to support them, said Sugars.

Another consequence of Richmond’s affordable housing crisis is young, singlemoms being forced into precarious housing situations.

She said a lack of government support to find subsidized housing for women is resulting in more situations where the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development is making inquiries to remove the women’s children from their custody.

Meanwhile, Metro Vancouver’s homeless population has grown 30 per cent over the past three years, according to a recent count by the regional government. The proportion of seniors grew from 18 to 23 per cent.

“It’s not just government we need to look to for answers. The entire community needs to step up. We need basement suites, lane houses; developers need to step up,” said Sugars.

hether it’s urgent care, community care or just a little love and attention, a trio of hopefuls in the May 9 provincial election all agree that Richmond’s healthcare sector needs some minor surgery, at the very least.

The long-awaited, new tower at Richmond Hospital, walk-in clinics closing due to doctor shortages and the need for community health centres in the city were all top of mind for key members of the three principal parties.

The Green Party’s Richmond-Queensborough candidate, Michael Wolfe — a school teacher by day — is adamant the focus needs to shift to promoting healthy lifestyles in our youth, as well as building de-centralized, community-based primary care hubs to take the pressure off emergency rooms.

For the BC NDP’s Richmond South-Centre hopeful, city councillor Chak Au, investing in post-secondary education — in a bid to produce more doctors — and erecting “urgent care centres” to offer a one-stop shop, “team-based” approach are a priority.

And for the BC Liberals’ Richmond North-Centre runner, incumbent Teresa Wat, continuing to push forward the concept and business plans for the hospital’s new, north tower is at the forefront of her health agenda.

Asked by the News what needs to be done to improve healthcare in Richmond, Wolfe said the focus needs to stretch beyond the four-year cycle for government.

“We would create two, new ministries; one for health prevention, disease and active lifestyles. And one for mental health and education strategies that focus on youth,” he said.

“All of this feeds into early childhood education. That’s the foundation that leads to healthy lifestyles.”

And after a conversation last week with Richmond’s chief medical health officer, Meena Dawar, Wolfe insisted the shift in health focus can relate directly to his native city. “(Dawar) said the things that make Richmond stand out (in the Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) region) were lifestyle diseases,” he said.

“Our mental health rating, for example, was at 42 per cent (of people who rated their mental health as excellent). That was a very low rating across the (VCH) region. “Our low activity and having the lowest fruit and veggie intake in the region at 21 per cent, all takes me back to lifestyle.”

De-centralizing primary care centres and building community-based ones in places such as Steveston and Hamilton — as has happened in other B.C. communities — is another longterm solution for Richmond, according to Wolfe.

“We could have physicians, nurse practitioners and mental health professionals all in the one place. This would help relieve the pressure on hospitals.”

None of it comes cheap, however, and Wolfe said cancelling major projects, such as the Massey Tunnel replacement and the Site C Dam, would provide an initial burst of $10 billion in funding.

Taking a swipe at the incumbent BC Liberal MLAs, Wolfe said they’ve dragged their feet for 12 years on the building of a new, north tower at Richmond Hospital.

n Urgent care centres needed, says NDP

Coun. Chak Au, a Richmond-based social worker in VCH’s Family and Child Counselling Department, said he’s acutely aware of the shortage of doctors in the province and locally, where, as recently as two weeks ago, a walk-in clinic in Seafair had to close for that very reason.

“In 2013, the Liberals said that they would fix the problem; but here we are in 2017, and we still have the same problem,” said Au, who said he’s also felt first-hand “healthcare underfunding” with the loss of a full-time therapist in his department in the last few years.

“But we can’t solve the problem overnight. We need to train more doctors for this; we have to invest more in post-secondary education.”

Au’s party leader, John Horgan, revealed earlier this week that the BC NDP, if elected, would build urgent care centres, with a “team-based approach to healthcare” where patients with urgent, but non, life-threatening issues can see a doctor, nurse-practitioner, pharmacist or other health professional.

Au said that Richmond would be in the market for one of these new centres, should he and his party get elected.

Funding for such centres, he said, would likely come from more taxation of the province’s top two per cent of earners.

But the BC NDP has also stated that urgent care and community health centres will ultimately save significant health care dollars by keeping people out of hospitals.

As for the saga that is the hospital tower, Au said he doesn’t blame the BC Liberals’ Wat and, in fact, sympathizes with her, as she was only elected four years ago.

“We knew about it in 2005 and in 2011, it was again deemed unsafe. The provincial government has done nothing in those years,” he said.

“And in 2014, 2016 and in March of this year, Richmond city council has formally asked (our MLAs) to make this a priority.”

n Hospital tower a priority, Liberal told

Talking of the tower, Wat said getting it built was almost exclusively the healthcare topic of conversation while meeting her constituents this campaign.

“They support me, but they say I have to do something about the hospital,” she said. “I’ve been telling them that we have committed $3 million to move the business plan forward (for the new tower).”

The Richmond Hospital Foundation said it’s willing to raise $40 million of the estimated $283 million needed for a new tower. It presently has $25 million.

However, asked why it has taken 12 years for the government to raise $3 million for a business plan, Wat pointed to the fact she was only elected -Develop community healthin 2013. care centres “Since I became the MLA, - Create a ministry for I realized that we had to do primary care and another for something about the hospimental health and youth tal. In October 2014, I got

Health Minister Terry Lake to come over and see the hospital, and in June of 2016, we committed $1 million for the tower’s concept plan,” said Wat, adding that “every single region” has hospitals needing replacement.

“I’m working on this day and night to make it happen. It is very much a priority for me.”

Wat, however, couldn’t guarantee that shovels would be in the ground for the new tower before the next election in 2021.

“I’m not a medical expert and it would depend on how long it takes for the business plan to be confirmed and then everything else can get going.”

As for the shortage of doctors in Richmond forcing the closure of a walk-in clinic, Wat pointed to a “dramatic increase” in the city’s population.

“But we more than doubled the number of medical school spaces (from 128 to 288) between 2002 and 2011 and we have made a commitment to have 400 doctors graduating annually by 2025…by continuing to increase the spaces at medical schools.”

Wat couldn’t speak to where the funding for the extra spaces was going to come from.

In terms of the BC NDP’s pledge to construct urgent care centres, Wat said it sounded like a nice idea but “they have not said anything to back it up; there is no extra money for all this extra stuff. They just throw it out there and don’t really have a plan.”

just read a wonderful memoir called The Bridge Ladies by Betsy Lerner. It’s a Jewish version of The Joy Luck Club, except the four older women in this book meet weekly to play bridge.

What’s slightly unnerving is the painfully disjointed way Lerner connects with her mother. I say that because it resembles my own strained relationship with my late mother.

Except that Lerner had the opportunity to peel back the layers of her mother’s neuroses, anxieties and fears while her mom was still alive. Over time, Lerner unravels the truth about her mother’s life, and decodes the tangled emotions that held her mother at bay.

The difference is, I watched as my mother slipped away from me slowly, tugged inexorably by the steel grip of dementia. So many unanswered questions. So many missed opportunities to sort out our differences and come to a détente. Not that I ever expected us to magically understand one other. But I never even got up to bat.

Lerner steals words right out of my mouth when she writes: “Was I ever going to be good enough?” How often have I felt that sadness seep into my bones; that feeling of inadequacy. No matter how hard I tried, how accomplished I became, it was never quite good enough. I used to joke that if I wanted to feel bad about myself, I’d go spend an hour with my mother. Not so funny anymore.

Lerner’s mother Roz, was part of a weekly bridge group for decades, and when Lerner

took on the challenge of interviewing each of the bridge ladies (and some of the daughters) she hears things that resonate deeply.

It seems that other daughters had the same difficulties relating to their mothers as Lerner did. When she asks one bridge daughter what she wishes from her mother if she could ask for just one thing, the daughter replies: “Could you accept me for who I am?”

Roz’s generation of women prided themselves on privacy and toughing it out alone.

Emotions were a no-fly zone. Families tamped down their pain and disappointment and put on a brave face; one that Lerner was determined to strip away.

My family was the opposite. Emotions were on display 24/7 at home. From the outside looking in, our life was perfection: a well-educated mother, a doctor father, two daughters, live-in help, and a beautiful home. From the inside looking out, a whole other story; the issues bubbling just below the surface.

My mother never opened up to me, nor I to her. It was always my father who was privy to the details of my adolescent crushes, or my careless antics as a young adult. My mother and I held no common ground.

Had I the chance to know my mother in a more open, honest way, it would have softened my heart. But I was too busy fighting her on every front. Even at the start of my mother’s dementia, I still fought her, misguided in the belief that she really wasn’t all that sick. That it was just manipulation.

All this begs the question: Does the truth set us free? Or does it complicate life even more? I may never know.

Wildcats team to beat again T

he new boss of the McMath Wildcats wants nothing more than to see his team at last make a breakthrough at the provincial championships. He also grasps what girls high school soccer is really all about.

“Having an opportunity to play with your school mates and kids you have grown up with is really important,” said Paul Pedersen. “I think it’s a really cool experience, especially when you go to a (Grade) 8-12 school. Going into the season, I decided we were going to take the best players no matter how old they were and just give them the experience.”

Pedersen has taken over the program after helping out Stephen Burns who back focussing only on his duties at South Delta Secondary now that his daughter Ali has graduated.

The Steveston resident is also an assistant coach at UBC who certainly has his finger on the pulse of youth soccer in Metro Vancouver and beyond.

The Wildcats have been a perennial provincial contender but snake-bitten recently when it comes time for the provincial “AAA” championships. They haven’t dropped a game in regulation time over the last three seasons but have lost penalty shootout tiebreakers that have denied them semi-final berths.

This time, Pedersen has a very young squad with Georgia Booker being the lone Grade 12 in the starting 11, but loads of potential.

His whopping 23-player roster features players from a variety of levels — ranging from B.C. Premier to Division One. Some also thrive in other sports including Martha Melaku (basketball) and Emillie Sherritt (softball). It’s what makes high school soccer unique.

“We were going to have a second team but it just didn’t work out,” he continued. “The key for us is just all getting together and playing some challenging games. As always, this is a good group of kids who love to play football — an attacking style and getting behind people.”

It’s full speed ahead towards the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo for Evan Dunfee.

The 26-year-old Richmond race walker got the news he wanted to hear Friday when the International Association of Athletics Federations voted to keep the 50 km race as part of its program at least until the 2020 Games.

Dunfee was fourth over that distance in Rio last summer thanks to a courageous national record performance. Last month, he tasted his first-ever IAAF Race Walking Challenge race victory in

He was among the leading voices in the international race walking community that pleaded with the IAAF to continue with the distance. The event’s lack of popularity and gender equality issues were among the concerns brought forward by the International Olympic Committee. There is no women’s 50km race.

Pacific International Cup underway at RCC A

unique event that recognizes the grassroots of one of Canada’s favourites winter pastimes is underway at the Richmond Curling Club.

The 18th annual Pacific International Cup features men’s and women’s rinks playing daily draws — leading up to Sunday’s championship games — first for International and B.C. bragging rights at 10:30 a.m., then the winners coming together at 1:30 p.m. to determine the overall cup champions.

The host club has representation in both the men’s and women’s divisions in the B.C. competition.

The Rob Dennis foursome is up against

rinks from Langley, Vancouver, Vernon, Comox Valley, Kimberley and Williams Lake.

Kim Dennis’ crew is taking on teams from Cloverdale, Cowichan, Golden Ears, Comox Valley, Creston, Kamloops and Marpole.

Once again the international division features entries from throughout the U.S. and abroad. The women’s side includes Arizona, California, Nevada, Washington, Minnesota, Oregon, Yukon and Australia. The men’s side features even more international flavour with New Zealand and Alaska joining Arizona, California, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Australia and the Yukon.

It was back in 1998 when a group of curl-

ers came up with the idea of launching a competition for club champions.

The Pacific Club Challenge was born and initially was limited only to men’s club champions from within the Pacific Coast Curling Association (PCCA).

It later became the B.C. Club Challenge and eventually included similar playdowns on Vancouver Island and in the Interior. In 2005, a women’s division was added too.

With strong support from Curl BC, there are now regional events to qualify for Richmond. divisions each year. The B.C. division winners also represent their province at the Travelers National Curling Club Championships.

It was 17 years ago when the PCCA launched the international division, providing another unique competition for the Club Challenge winners.

The PIC women’s division was added in 2004 and international interest and representation continued to grow.

Round-robin action continues Friday with draws at 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Three more draws follow Saturday (8 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.), followed by any potential tiebreakers. The semifinals take place at 8 a.m. Sunday morning, featuring the second and third place finishers from each of the four divisions.

Sockeyes to host Cyclone Taylor Cup

T

he Richmond Sockeyes have been awarded the 2018 Cyclone Taylor Cup. The four-team provincial showcase tournament features winners of the Pacific Junior, Vancouver Island and Kootenay International Junior Leagues, along with the host club. The winner will represent B.C. at the Keystone Cup Western Canadian Junior “B” Championships.

The Cyclone Taylor Cup typically rotates between the three B.C. Leagues. This year’s event was hosted two weekends ago by the Creston Valley Thunder and was won by KIJHL rival Beaver Valley Nitehawks. The last time the Sockeyes hosted the tournament was back in 2009 when they defeated the

Nelson Maple Leafs in the gold medal game.

Sockeyes president and co-owner Doug Paterson praised the City of Richmond and the club’s close working relationship for being able to secure Minoru Arena.

The league also announced it has expanded to 11 teams next season with the addition of the Langley Trappers.

The club will play out of the George Preston Recreational Centre and be affiliated with the BCHL’s Langley Rivermen.

According to Paterson, who also serves as the PJHL chair, there is a good chance a 12th team could be added with Cloverdale and White Rock being the leading candidates.

It is with great sadness that the family of Peter John Smith announces his passing after a brief illness, on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at the age of 83 years.

Peter will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Norma (Janet) and his four sons, Colin, Douglas, James, and Robert.
