have to second Zina Pinkhafik when she says it’s “a very sad day,” referring to the closure of her Seafair medical walk-in clinic.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve been there for my family’s various calamities. When the dog bites (my daughter’s face and her eyes puff up), when the bee stings (and my son has a nasty allergic reaction), to paraphrase My Favourite Things, Seafair was where we went.

We have a family doctor, but a visit with her next week sometime does me little good when Little Miss has turned into a screaming banshee thanks to an ear infection.

We could race to emergency, but we would wait forever to be seen — and rightly so.

Even if my nerves are shot, and we’re rattling everyone else’s in the waiting area, my little banshee is not about to die, so we stay at the back of the line. Besides, a highly-trained, ER doctor, capable of cracking chests and stitching arteries is, shall we say, overkill when all we need are some antibiotics.

The owners of the Seafair clinic say they have to close because of a shortage of doctors. According to the Walk-In Clinics of BC Association, Seafair is one among a number of walk-in clinics throughout the province that have closed recently due to a doctor shortage and what they call an excess of “red tape.”

In particular, the association complains that the province has limited to 50 the number of patients for which a clinic doctor will be fully compensated. Fifty visits in a 7.5 hour day averages out to about nine minutes per visit.

Actually, that doesn’t sound unreasonable to me. What does boggle my mind, however, is the fact we’re missing this link in our health care services. Walk-in clinics are a critical part of the overall system, so how else to deal with the doctor shortage?

The association argues we need to train more and better compensate doctors. Perhaps, but I’d say we also need to think bigger.

I recently received an email from the BC Community Health Centre Association. (It’s election time so they’re looking for funding.)

Community Health Centres (CHC) provide walk-in health services, using a team of nurse practitioners, social workers — as well as doctors. It’s an integrated approach that aims to provide the right person for the job, so you don’t have ER doctors treating ear infections, or even a regular doctor treating addiction when a social worker might do it better for less. What’s important is they’re open when you need them.

There are about 10 CHCs throughout the Lower Mainland, but none in Richmond. I’m not sure why we’ve been left off the list, but with one less walk-in clinic to attend to our dog bites and bee stings, perhaps we should book an appointment to at least start the conversation.

Should you sell your shares in the catering companies?

The latest statistics are out on marriage and cohabitation, from the retirement Magazine Good Times. Bottom line? Marriage is losing its popularity (so much for “Saying Yes to the Dress”).

But, the cohabiters are older.

Assuming the statistics are about the same for Americans and Canadians, here goes: i) ii) iii) iv) v) vi)

The number of cohabiters over 50 is up 75% since 2007; Of all cohabiters, one-quarter are over 50; Most of the “older” cohabiters (61%) have been married before; 13% of the older cohabiters are widowed; Divorce rates among seniors have doubled since the 1990’s; Marriage rates are lower in all age groups.

All this is not exactly breaking news. However, among the implications is that planning (financial, retirement and Estate) for these couples is more complex, especially if they have children from prior relationships. Breakups are potentially more complex as well. Start planning as early as you can, and in the meantime, Happy Easter to all!

A warm thank you to the honest folks Dear Editor, I am writing to express my gratitude to whoever it was at Lansdowne Centre’s food court who found my purse, which had been left on a chair uncared for, and handed it over to mall security.

My thanks also goes to the young police officer who went out of his way to deliver my purse to my home.

While I regret leaving my purse there after having a quick lunch in the mall, I am

greatly moved by the realization that there are so many kind-hearted people in our community.

In fact, this is not the first time I’ve gotten back something that I had left unintentionally in a public place in Richmond.

It was interesting reading the article on Dong Pan, leader of the “Parents Care Group” and independent candidate for Richmond North Centre who says, “We need to have free speech; we can`t have the thought police running Canada.”

Mr. Pan makes the same mistake many make with regard to free speech: they think it only applies to them.

Damn the bridge, but Housing strategy is failing don’t dam the river Dear Editor, Now that the writ has been dropped, how about the government drop a few more things.

How about the Fraser River Bridge and that jungle of an interchange project, that few in Richmond want (including Richmond’s mayor and most on council).

Let’s just twin, if not triple, the existing tunnel and not have an ugly edifice that will only benefit off-shore tanker traffic.

But it seems our local MLAs aren’t listening to the community at large.

Let’s not increase tanker traffic on the West Coast altogether and not increase the chance of humongous spills, leaks and other accidents along this fragile coast and in Burrard Inlet.

Any accidents could and would cause

widespread environmental damage; the Exxon Valdez proved that.

Again, where are our MLAs to represent us and our wishes?

I say damn the Fraser River Bridge.

While we’re at it, let’s also drop the Site C Dam project and keep the Peace River area, its community and the irreplaceable farmland that it is. We don’t need the dam, but it seems no one in government is listening.

It’s time for a change and a government that will listen to and represent the province and the people within it, first and foremost. This is your province, not theirs.

Dear Editor, This week, I attended a Richmond Board of Education budget meeting and the news wasn’t good — $10.5 million shortfall.

Not because the board has been overspending — in fact, it has been cutting costs wherever it can — but because enrolment is steadily and rapidly declining.

The reason for this is obvious. Richmond is not doing nearly enough to secure affordable housing. There are new developments going up all around us, yet only a handful of them contain affordable, rental housing.

Why aren’t all new developments required to contain affordable housing? Surely, this would help keep families in the city and boost our school district enrolment.

Currently, the city requires that developments of more than 80 units contain five per cent Low End Market Rentals (LEMR).

This 80-unit threshold, however, is much too high.

It seems developments around most

schools outside of the city centre are likely to contain less than 80 units and, therefore, are not required to provide LEMR. This means that the lovely townhouses that surround our emptying schools, selling for upwards of $1.5 million dollars, are not going to house families but to house speculators’ investments. Why isn't that number lower?

Why not a LEMR in 20 units? 30 units? 40 units? The city should be demanding this change.

We need to make our city accessible to everyone, from students, young families, and working class individuals, to seniors.

We can have a vital and growing city where our schools flourish, where families can stay together, and we retain the people who work within the city but can’t afford to live in the city. As such, I am calling on our city’s mayor and councillors to take decisive and immediate action to increase rental stock in the city.

he new, $80 million complex on Granville Avenue will be named the Minoru Centre for Active Living and is expected to be completed by the spring of 2018.

The new name for the multipurpose complex, which is still under construction in Minoru Park, was officially endorsed by Richmond city council on Monday evening.

“This new facility will be at the heart of our community and will become a major destination for residents and visitors,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“It represents a significant increase in services for aquatics users, seniors and others in order to meet the needs of our evolving community.”

The facility will include an aquatic centre, seniors centre and other recreation and sports amenities.

It will replace the aging and outdated Minoru Aquatic Centre and Minoru Place Activity Centre, as well as the former Minoru Pavilion.

The use of ‘Minoru’ in the name, according to the city, retains a connection to all of the facilities that are being replaced and, of course, its location within Minoru Park.

Other names considered by city staff and council were “Richmond Centre for Active Living” and Centennial Centre for Active Living.”

The former of the other two options was discouraged by staff due to the possibility of it being confused with the nearby Richmond Centre shopping mall.

While the latter, although recognizing Richmond’s original Centennial Outdoor Pool built in 1958, only focused on the swimming element of the new building.

The new facility’s aquatic centre will feature: • Two 25-metre swimming pools (one eight-lane tank and one six-lane tank) with accessible features and varying depths and temperatures, allowing for greater usability and flexibility in programming;

Mayors ‘pleased’ with NDP’s commitment to transit plan Graeme Wood

T

he politics of transportation are heating up following Tuesday’s provincial election writ, and Richmond is in the crossfire.

Metro Vancouver’s Mayors’ Council wrote Thursday that it was “pleased” that the BC NDP includes a full commitment to the 10year transportation plan crafted by the mayors and regional planners.

“Today’s announcement suggests the BC NDP is prepared to make the investments and work in partnership with the Mayors’ Council to move forward with the full, comprehensive region-wide transportation strategy that’s needed to reduce congestion on our roads and overcrowding on our transit system,” stated New Westminster mayor Jonathan Cote. That plan does not include remedying the George Massey Tunnel crossing. The NDP has stated it will reassess the bridge plan, if elected.

If the mayors’ plan is approved it will mean the Canada Line will get more trains, with more frequent departures. Richmond will also get a B-line bus to Metrotown. More frequent bus service has already been implemented under Phase 1, according to Translink.

But the mayors stated they are also asking for clarification on bridge tolling.

This week, both major parties surprised the public, with the BC Liberals promising to

cap bridge tolls on the Golden Ears and Port Mann bridge to $500 per commuter, annually, and the NDP proposing to eliminate tolls altogether.

The BC Liberals’ plan will cost $30 million (plus additional costs for the Massey Tunnel replacement bridge), whereas the NDP’s plan would cost about $200 million.

It remains to be seen how the region could implement road pricing or a flat toll across all bridges, which fall under several different jurisdictions.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie was unavailable for comment.

Meanwhile, support for the Massey Tunnel replacement bridge is split, according to a poll conducted by Mainstreet Research “When it comes to replacing the George Massey Bridge, Greater Vancouver residents are split. 31% support a 10-lane toll bridge while 29% support the position of local mayors: a smaller, less expensive bridge with expanded public transit. 12% would like to see something else while another 28% are undecided on the matter,” said Mainstreet’s president Quito Maggi.

Green Party candidate for RichmondQueensborough Michael Wolfe said his party is opposed to the Liberal plan to build the bridge, a project that has already begun with some minor work along Highway 99.

Wolfe said the tunnel should be kept for environmental considerations.

he only thing matching the sweet smell of fresh sawdust rising up from the workshop floor was the thick stench of more than a century of history swirling in the air.

Surrounded on all sides by maritime ghosts of a forgotten past and finely-tuned tools of the present, you can almost reach out and touch the passion and obsession that fills the main shed at the Britannia Shipyard.

At the back of the Steveston building, supported on wooden stilts, is the early 1900s tugboat, the MV Burnaby, which used to tow the fishing fleet out to the mouth of the Fraser and is now nearing the end of a painstaking, 18-year restoration project by its love-struck owner.

Nearer the front lies a 100-year-old First Nations war racing canoe, being pieced together, inch-by-inch, on site, by shipwright Eric Fisher for the Britannia Heritage Shipyard Society’s Canada 150 project.

Slye said the war canoe, although still a work in progress, may be ready in time for the Maritime Festival in August.

The MV Burnaby, however — which was based in Steveston in its day — will still very much be deep in its restoration phase.

“It has a fabulous history,” said Slye.

“It would tow the entire fishing fleet of row boats out from Steveston to the mouth of the river during the likes of the salmon run and then tow them back in. It was a huge effort for them to row all the way out there.

“People will be able to come in here during the festival and see up close the work being done to restore it.

“We’re trying to recreate a little of what Steveston was. And this boat is probably the largest boat that has been built here since the 1940s.

“We want to get back to building larger boats and larger crafts and restoring our history. Boats like the MV Burnaby will help us with that process.” n The City of Richmond has agreed to bolster, to the tune of $118,000, the wooden boat element of the Maritime Festival.

At a city council meeting last week, Coun. Harold Steves said he was “extremely disappointed in the wooden boat part (of the festival) last year.

“Most of it was Port Metro Vancouver and a whole lot of groups that had nothing to do with wooden boats.”

City staff told Steves that the city will, this year, take over a whole section of the site and the Britannia Heritage Shipyard Society will play a lead role.

“Are we going to have something different than people walking around on stilts? asked Steves. “People wandering around on stilts in a costume is not my idea of a festival.”

Don’t short change kids’ education: Ho

t’s an ongoing struggle.

How do you get your kid to ration his allowance responsibly? How can you convince your teen to not spend her entire paycheque at the mall in one hour? When will your young adult son stop dipping into Bank of Mom and Dad? Financial literacy and common sense get little attention in schools, said banker and school trustee Jonathan Ho, who made the matter one of his key priorities when elected in 2014, after seeing far too many young people walk into his branch with little to no wherewithal about their finances.

“I found a lot of young customers are very poor in financial literacy. They’re financially illiterate. Some aren’t aware that if they make a minimum payment, they still accumulate interest. Some customers are not aware they have a credit file and they screw it up. This takes a while to fix,” explained Ho. “I ask them if they’ve learned anything in school (regarding finances); they say, no,” said Ho, who recently helped wrap up a financial literacy event Monday, as part of a series of events this month related

to common sense saving and spending.

On Wednesday, which is Talk With Our Kids About Money Day, at 6:30 p.m. at Hugh Boyd secondary, a final public event will take place with popular guest speaker Paul Lermitte, a family business specialist educated at the UBC Sauder School of Business, who authored Allowances, Dollars and Sense.

Ho said there continues to be a gap in the education system that is leaving graduating students in the dark when it comes to simple things such as paying bills, saving money, and understanding basic concepts such compound interest and credit ratings.

Special events and district participation in financial literacy campaigns should help teachers raise more awareness in the classroom.

“We encourage teachers to do money-related projects,” said Ho. Meanwhile, parents especially are to play an important role.

“If you get a pet, talk to your kids about the costs of having one,” said Ho. “Over time they can accumulate basic knowledge, so in the future I don’t ... meet those (financially illiterate) customers.” said Ho.

$300 million dyke plan forges ahead

s far as the actual dykes go, building and strengthening them is fairly straight forward for the City of Richmond’s head engineer John Irving.

“Considering everything we face on a yearly basis, this isn’t much of a challenge.

We have a well-defined perimeter dyke; it’s actually a lot more challenging for, say, Vancouver where they have low lying areas on a flood plain where there is no dyke,” he explained.

Irving’s job becomes a bit more complicated when he factors in considerations such as development, recreation and the environment, in addressing how the city will raise its dykes, over the next 80 years, to accommodate an estimated one-metre rise in sea level.

Late last year, city council approved a city-commissioned report (Dike Master Plan Phase 2) that looks at the long-term plan for the West Dyke Trail and its connecting route near Mitchell Island at No. 6 Road.

The city has a long-term plan to open the river’s edge to the public. As such, recreational opportunities are a key consideration.

Cue Coun. Alexa Loo who wants to see, when the time comes, the West Dyke Trail paved, in order to eventually have a circuitous commuter cycling route on Lulu Island.

“We talk about getting people out of cars; well this is a real opportunity to do that,” said

Loo. Irving estimated costs of paving the trail from Steveston to Terra Nova to be similar to the Railway Greenway — $2-3 million — a small add-on to an otherwise $300 million, multi-decade project (2012 dollars).

Some of that $300 million will come from the average $10-12 million the city expends on dyke upgrades and maintenance annually, including improving pump stations. The city recieves matching provincial grants, when available.

Laying blacktop on the trail has some considerations, noted Irving, such as the fact some residents prefer the natural gravel trail.

As well, Irving would ideally keep the dyke accessible to any unforeseen improvements.

Dykes will need to be raised to 4.7 metres with the potential to raise them further to 5.5

Richmond is sinking about one millimetre each year, but a flood protection bylaw calls for new buildings to be raised several feet metres, depending on observed sea level rise measurements and future climate change models.

“With my engineer hat on, we’d have a nice dyke with nothing on it. But we have community needs,” he said.

Further east is where a number of those needs are coming into play.

The city, which has consulted with Dutch engineers and planners, is establishing what it dubs as “superdykes.”

The best existing example of a superdyke is at the Richmond Olympic Oval, where land has been raised to nudge up against the old dyke. This superdyke will soon continue along an adjacent new condo development, and within a decade a new waterfront park will be raised, from the Dinsmore Bridge to Cambie Road. Further developments to the north will lengthen the superdyke.

This wider dyke provides more stability in the event of a mega thrust earthquake, which is a commonly shared concern among residents.

Irving is confident the dykes will prevail.

“Maybe the worse that happens is it settles a foot or two,” in which case emergency repairs can be done, said Irving.

“The dykes are essentially a big pile of earth.”

Flirting with Mother Nature is a bit more complicated along the western shores.

At Terra Nova, the city is considering cutting off Terra Nova Rural Park with a secondary dyke. This new dyke would cut across the land, leaving the marsh, lagoon and playground exposed to periodic flooding.

Key to protecting homes in West Richmond is, of course, the West Dyke Trail. And a key protective measure of this portion of the city’s dyke is Sturgeon Bank.

Here, the city, provincial government and Port of Vancouver will be collaborating to study placing sea berms off the foreshore to prevent erosion. There is no timeline and nothing is definitive.

What is definitive is that Sturgeon Bank is eroding largely because not enough river silt is reaching the marsh, due to Steveston Jetty blocking sediment deposits. Furthermore, as sea levels rise, more water is washing through the environmentally sensitive marsh.

Placing artificial berms off the shores will dissipate waves and mitigate erosion.

With the marsh in place, the dyke would not be exposed to large, crashing waves and storm surges.

Meanwhile, in Steveston, the city is likely to opt for a sea gate at Steveston Island.

Irving said this plan is likely 40 years down the road, give or take a decade.

“In that time frame a whole lot of things could happen. We might go in the low range of sea rise, or maybe its risen more; in that case we would have to accelerate the plan,” said Irving.

The city is presently conducting a study of Shady Island to see if it’s fit to become a long dyke that will close off Steveston Vil-

lage and Britannia Heritage Shipyard.

It’s also forging ahead with a new “heritage flood wall” at Britannia.

One may notice the site is increasingly besieged with king tide floods, as it is outside the dyke system (Westwater Drive).

You can call it “heritage flooding,” quipped Irving.

“By design we’ve built (Britannia) to the look and feel of what it was. Back in the day, the buildings were interactive with the river and would flood,” said Irving.

Nevertheless, the new wooden wall should prevent flooding of the bunkhouse, boathouse and Murakami House.

Kwantlen PR students light up for Kettle Society P

ublic relations students from Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) Richmond campus have shed some light on the darkness of mental illness.

Illuminate the Night, a charity gala hosted by KPU, raised $14,098 for the Kettle Society, a charity dedicated to supporting people with mental illness.

“It meant a lot to be able to see something from start to finish that was able to help people and give back to the community,” said Erin Clubine, a fourth-year PR student at the Richmond campus.

Currently, the society provides services for more than 5,000 people through 26 different programs.

It has a mental health drop-in, a transition house for women, and more than 400 units of supportive housing.

“It’s really great that the Kettle has so many useful programs to help people,” said Jaime Ruck, one of the PR students who helped organize the gala.

ow that I’m retiring from teaching at UBC, I am keen on discovering “pensioner wines.” These have to be inexpensive and they have to be better than “just okay.” Life’s too short to drink plain plonk!

As a result, today I am reviewing four bargain South African wines, all labeled Two Oceans. We’re off to the tip of South Africa, where two oceans collide and produce ideal grape-growing conditions in the Western Cape.

The Atlantic Ocean which flows along the west coast of Africa is fed by currents from Antarctica. And the Indian Ocean which flows along Africa’s east coast, is fed by the tropics.

Consequently the grapes soak up the summer heat and ripen their flavours, and the cool ocean breezes preserve the aromas and the zesty acidity, to make the wines refreshing.

So what do they taste like for $9.99 each? The Two Oceans Pinot Grigio was my favourite white, with its exotic nose with mango and pineapple and a refreshing lemon grass flavour, with tropical fruit flavours and a lingering finish.

Serve with baked Arctic Char, red potatoes, mushrooms, and pancetta with capers and lemon zest. Or drink with garlic/lemon chicken kebabs, with cucumber and herb sauce.

The Two Oceans 2016 Sauvignon Blanc has a fruitier personality compared with New Zealand SB’s that can often be very herbal, with grass, green bean, and asparagus flavours.

I enjoyed the Sauvignon Blanc’s gooseberry, guava, and pineapple character with just a hint of herbaceousness.

Compared with the dry Pinot Grigio, which is good as a sipper or with food, the SB was very dry and enjoy it with food.

Pair it with linguine with clams in a white sauce, or mussels in white wine with garlic baguette Of the two reds, I really enjoyed the Two Ocean’s 2015 Shiraz. There is a wonderful bouquet of berry, cola, along with a whiff of wood smoke to add an outdoorsy character. Like most shirazes, it has smooth tannins and velvety blueberry and blackberry flavours coat your tongue.

Serve the Shiraz with South Africa’s signature dish, curried lamb bobotie with raisins, mango chutney and marmalade, plus yellow rice with turmeric and cinnamon.

Our final red, the Two Oceans 2015 Cabernet-Merlot is a drier less fruity wine with good tannins and notes of blackcurrant, plums, spice and vanilla. I would suggest making a pot of braised short ribs, simmered with at least a cup of the cab-merlot along with beef stock. And save a glass of the wine to savour with the ribs.

You might also pair it with pork chops puttanesca, with tomatoes, black olives, and the cab-merlot in the dish and in your wine glass. As they say in South Africa, “Lekker!”

For those who have an invisible disability, part of the struggle to seek employment can include the decision whether or not to disclose their condition to a prospective employer.

“If they do or don’t, what will that mean for them because at some point something will occur, whether they are struck with extra fatigue or have pain in their joints. Will there be some understanding as to what they’re facing on a given day?” Gaudry asked.

Richmond’s Corvus Energy has been awarded a long-term contract to provide service and maintenance to Scandlines hybrid ferry fleet which serves routes in Denmark, Sweden and Germany.

The 10-year contract is for the entire Scandlines hybrid ferry fleet. The comprehensive contract includes both traditional service and maintenance of the fleets’ energy storage systems, plus Corvus’ remote condition-based monitoring service called Watchman. On Feb. 5, Scandlines put its two, newest Corvus powered hybrid ferries, the M/V Berlin and M/V Copenhagen, into regular service on their Rostock-Gedser route between Denmark and Germany.

Along with the decreased environmental impact, the fuel consumption of the vessels has been reduced to almost one third per crossing per car compared to the previous ferries used on the same route.

Blue Jays take flight

“A lot of people were, and still are, skeptical. It was a longshot, it was a grind, but we got there.

“And on Sunday, they had a great introduction to the sport. You may have heard of such a thing as winning ugly? Well, this was losing sweetly. They were so excited about Sunday.”

The Richmond Blue Jays plan came to fruition, said Sangara, “much sooner than we thought it would.”

“But the South Van Little League (SVLL), which has been around for 61 years, have really taken us under their umbrella.

“They invited us to their opening ceremony last week and I really can’t say enough about them; they’ve been incredible.

“They’ve also made sure that all our games are at King George on the weekends. For many of these kids and their families, playing in a team sport, or in any sport, is a totally new thing and the league didn’t want them having to travel to Tsawwassen on a Wednesday night and wanted to keep the costs down, which is a factor for many of these families.”

The inclement spring abated, and the sun peeked out, just in time last weekend to allow the birth of a new sporting name in Richmond.

Stepping proudly out into the diamond for the first time, against the SVLL Pirates, was a very special team of young kids from east Cambie — the Richmond Blue Jays.

The majority of them, for various reasons, rarely played sport, let alone take part in a bona fide, league, baseball game.

“They cheered very loudly for their first hit,” said Serj Sangara, who, along with several other community members, helped make the kids’ dream come true.

“In fact, they cheered for their first base.

They cheered loud for their first run. They cheered for their first out. Everything was a first.

“It was amazing. It was a special day.”

“We have some nine and 10-year-olds and some 11 and 12-year-olds; we’re playing in the major division, which is for 11s and 12s.

“But if we were to get more players, we could put a team in each division.”

Sangara also hailed the support from the local business community for helping the Jays realize their dream.

“Pacific Coastal Airlines donated a golf cart, so we could drag the in-field; with just rakes, it was going to be tough,” he said.

“Home Depot gave us dolly’s to move the portable pitching mound; the BallYard at Sport Central has donated indoor space time for when it’s raining, like today, and Richmond Girls Softball Association gave us their container for storage.

“The community really has come together for this. It’s incredible.”

As for the highly successful, free Just Play Ball program, which attracted more than 100 children last year from the neighbourhood, Sangara said the Dugout team is starting it up early, due to the number of requests received.

“This coming Wednesday we’re starting it.

So many people have been asking about it and we could also get those extra players we need to make two teams instead of one,” he added.

And given that so many parents are willing to pitch in (no pun intended), but many have a limited knowledge of the sport, the club is putting together a Monday night program, just for the adults, to give them a little instruction on taking up some coaching roles.

“This is primarily for the parents. They all have advice for their children when it comes to the sport, so we want to ensure that they’re giving their kids the right advice,” Sangara said.

“So, on Mondays, we’re going to have some kind of instruction for them; we’re still working out what that looks like.”

he Railway Greenway in Richmond has had a positive effect with regards to cycling.

Family rides. I’ve seen an increase of families riding on the Greenway, and it’s a great sight: The little kids riding out in front with their helmets on, maybe even elbow pads, just in case, and the parents following behind, keeping watch and… not wearing helmets?

Before I go any further, I think a little information about me is needed, so you can understand my experience with what I want to talk about.

I’ve ridden 59,000 km in the last three years, with half of that being in Richmond. I volunteer to teach Grade 6 and 7 students cycling skills and safety, and I’m a father.

I’ve woken up early, ridden to Pemberton to have lunch, and then ridden right back home to have dinner.

I see a lot of Richmond, all the surrounding cities, and the people riding in them.

Of those 59,000 km, my helmet truly saved me one time. Here’s the kicker: I was less than 1 km from home, the road was empty, and I wasn’t even peddling. I was shifting my weight since my rear was a little sore after a long ride and my left peddle broke.

Me and my bike nose-dived to the left, and

faster than you can say “pavement” my head hit the road hard enough to awaken an old concussion injury and crack my helmet from one side to the other.

I was able to walk away from it, but I can honestly say that was the least likely five seconds of riding I’ve ever done that I’d expect to crash.

Oval to host elite volleyball C

anada’s women’s volleyball team will be hoping for some home court advantages during the FIVB World Grand Prix — one of the premier international tournaments for women’s volleyball — taking place at the Richmond Oval this summer.

The Oval, the team’s new, B.C.-based home, will host six matches — July 21 – 23 among four teams in the tournament’s Group 2 that includes Canada, Germany, Peru and Czech Republic.

This will likely be the only chance for Canadians to see this calibre of women’s volleyball on home soil, as the tournament’s format will change and be re-branded in 2018.

It’s also the first year for the women’s team in its new BC-based home at the Richmond Olympic Oval and with a new coaching staff.
